Key votes coming on council tax rise Phil Dennett News Editor
Council tax payers in Horsham district will fork out about £50 extra a year for services after being hit by another increase that has fuelled a Tory versus Tory protest. Residents will pay nearly 4 per cent more in West Sussex County Council tax from April if a county cabinet recommendation is approved by full council on February 19. That comes after Horsham District councillors recently recommended a rise of 1.2 per cent in the district council tax, to be approved by full council on February 24. If both are given the nod, as expected, it would mean residents in Horsham district paying a total of about £47 a year extra for district and county taxes. This is made up of an average county increase of £45.90 and a district increases of £1.63 on average. On top of the county and district taxes there will be average increase of £2.79 a year (1.98 per cent) in Sussex Police tax, known as precept, and any parish or town council

Horsham and West Sussex Councils, both Conservativerun, have said a large reduction in grant from the Conservative Government, as part of continuing austerity measures, has forced their hand ures, has forced their hand. MPs have been told about the concern of councillors over the grant cuts. Horsham has pointed out a 62.3 per cent drop over four years, while West Sussex says the bigger than
expected grants cut and increased demand for services has produced a £44.2 million “black hole” in the budget. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet is proposing a council tax increase of 3.95 per cent, with budget for 2016/17 set at £529million. The county council says its aim is to safeguard critical frontline services and protecting the most vulnerable. The council tax increase includes the two per cent charge announced by Chancellor George Osborne in November 2015 to help councils meet the demands of supporting an increasingly ageing population. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said the council had raised concerns about the settlement with local MPs and Government. Louise said: “It is with a heavy heart that we present this budget and propose this increase after six years of a council tax freeze. I hope residents will understand that this proposal is not being made lightly. “We are one of the councils worst hit by this funding settlement from Government. That combined with increasing pressure on our resources means we have to propose this increase.”

Unsung hero Bob Phillips has at last won recognition for his service to his community. The first thing he did was to share it with his devoted wife. Bob received the prestigious Certificate of Achievement by the Lord Lieutenant and the Chairman of West Sussex County Council for the outstanding contribution he has made in Shipley area, where he lives. With typical modesty Bob said: ““It was a complete shock to find out that I had been nominated for the award, let alone to have won. I love the local area so I’ve always been, and will continue to be, keen to work with the community, both young and old, to ensure it stays as amazing as it is. I would like to say thank you to my wife Josie, who has always helped with everything I’ve been committed too. She is also extremely active in the local community so I share this award with her.” Pat Arculus, chairman of West Sussex County Council, presented Bob with the certificate in front of his proud family and friends. Born in Peckham in 1936, Bob was evacuated to Shipley in 1939 as war broke out, with one of his sisters and two brothers. After attending Shipley Church of England School until 1951, Bob remained in the area and studied wood-
work in Billingshurst. He then trained as a gardener on a local estate, where, except for a small break to complete his national service, he remained until he retired in 1995. But it is Bob’s dedication and commitment to a number of organisations in the area that earned him the thoroughly deserved award. Having joined the 1st Shipley Scouts as a Cub in 1944, Bob has remained devoted to the group ever since and was one of the first in the troop to receive the Queen’s Scouts Award in the early 1950s. As well as becoming a troop leader in 1958, Bob has dedicated his free time to the group by taking on many other duties, including driving the minibus to collect and drop off children for meetings, maintaining the land surrounding the Scout hut at the base at Dragons Green, arranging the restoration of several village ponds and wells and organising the annual Christmas carol singing group who visit local residents to raise money to help support 1st Shipley Scouts. In addition, Bob was a member of Shipley Parish Council from 1972 to 2015 acting as chairman for four of those years and has been a governor at Shipley C of E School and a committee member at Weald School, Billingshurst. He became a church sidesman at
the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Shipley in 1984 and became the vicepresident and coach at Shipley Football Club in the 1960s and 1970s. Bob is also an active member of the Shipley History Society and organises talks and walks of local historical sites. Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Councillor, nominated Bob to receive the Certificate of Achievement. She said: “One of Bob’s greatest attributes is his modesty and willingness to help
anyone. He has always been one of the first to volunteer for any projects in the parish and there is not much he does not know about it or its history. Bob has always been supported by his wife Josie. “He is a very kind and generous person and deserves recognition for the contribution he has made to the Shipley and Coolham community over the years.” Bob is pictured receiving the award.

Teacher Justine Kirabo Drivers caught in police blitz banned strengthens school links
A visiting teacher will help strengthen links between a school and its counterpart in Uganda. Justine Kirabo from Namilyango College, a rural Boys Government School in Uganda, has been spending two weeks at The Weald school in Billingshurst. Justine’s visit is part of the school’s International Links pro-
gramme that aims to broaden the horizons of students and staff through developing links with schools in a number of countries worldwide. This partnership programme sees students and staff in both schools work collaboratively on activities that are specifically designed to nurture effective student leadership opportunities. Throughout her stay Justine has been based in the English Department and shadowing students in a variety of different departments to share best practice, exchange ideas and resources and continue to build links between the two schools. She has also been developing some of the main and most popular partnership projects. Luke Trotter, International Links Co-ordinator said: “‘Our Ugandan partnership is a great way for us to provide students with opportunities to break down perceptions on both fronts. Students experience lifestyles which are both different to our own and very similar as well, which is equally important. We’re really excited about our next trip out to Namilyango College in October with a small group of Year 11 students.” Justine is pictured with students.

Tale of horror and hope moves pupils The Active Kids campaign returns to Sainsbury’s A Holocaust survivor moved students and staff with her story of Nazi persecution through concentration camps. Poland-born Hannah Lewis lost most of her family after it was forcibly marched in 1943 to Adampol labour camp, though upon liberation she was briefly re-united with her father. The aim of the talk to students of Collyers’s college, Horsham, was to ensure that this tragic period of history is remembered and used as a lesson to the inhumanity and persecution of the present. Hannah was born in Włodawa, Poland. Włodawa was a small market town on the river Bug on the border of Ukraine. She was the only child of a prosperous and happy family, who fell victim to the despatch of Włodawa’s Jewish population to nearby Sobibór extermination camp and various labour camps. Hannah and her family were rounded up and forcibly marched in 1943 to Adampol, a labour camp. Over time most of her family disappeared. The pupils heard that towards the end of the war, Hannah fell very ill and rather than move her, as her father wanted, Hannah’s mother stayed put, which led to her own death at the hands of the German police. Hannah’s father, a partisan, survived the war and was briefly reunited with Hannah after Adampol was liberated. She later moved to London, where she lived with a great aunt and uncle until she married. in 1961. Since then, she has revisited Poland on several occasions, to reunite with the people who helped her and her family
and to see the places of her childhood. At the end of Hannah’s talk, the college’s two Holocaust Trust ambassadors, Charlotte Homshaw and Sam Winser, thanked Hannah on behalf of the college. Charlotte and Sam have recently worked with the Holocaust Trust in their Lessons from Auschwitz project, and, having visited Auschwitz, are now involved in the promotion of
student awareness of the horrors of persecution and genocide, now and in the past. Sally Bromley, Collyer’s Principal, said: “It was an honour for us to welcome Hannah Lewis to our college and we are incredibly grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust and Ann Mutluer for co-ordinating the visit.” Hannah is pictured chatting to students. The Active Kids campaign is back at Sainsbury’s at Horsham. And youngsters from Northolmes Junior School helped celebrate its return in lively fashion. Customers can collect vouchers until May 3 to help registered schools, groups and clubs across Horsham get sports and cooking equipment and experiences. The scheme is supported by double Paralympic gold medal-winner Ellie Simmonds, world record breaking sprinter Jonnie Peacock, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and England women’s football player, Lucy Bronze. The four ambassadors are committed to encouraging children to eat well, move well and live well. Customers receive one voucher for every £10 they spend in supermarkets and one voucher for every £5 they spend in convenience stores. Active Kids Ambassador, Ellie Simmonds, said: “Eating a balanced diet is just as important as exercising. I love experimenting with food and it’s great to see that Active Kids is encouraging this as part of the scheme.” Richard Lasham, deputy store manager at Sainsbury’s in Horsham, said: “The Active Kids scheme is a
brilliant way for our colleagues to support schools, groups and clubs in our local area. We love visiting local organisations and seeing the benefits the equipment and experiences have brought to the children and we were very happy to have Northolmes Junior School visit the store to help celebrate the 2016 launch.” For more information please visit: https://activekids.sainsburys.co.uk/ parents-community/paralympicchallenge. Roadshows demonstrate how to keep fuel bills down Roadshows are being staged in February to advise people on keeping fuel bills down. The energy saving community ses-
sions form part of the Warm Homes project and will be held at a number of venues across the district. The sessions include Henfield Library February 2, 12.30 – 4.30pm; Billingshurst Library February 8, 12.30 – 4.30pm; Well Being Road Show, Henfield Medical Group February 12, 9.30 – 12.30, and Pulborough Hub, Pulborough Library February 22, 10am – 12pm. For the full listing, including details of events in Sullington and Horsham please visit the Warmer Homes pages at www.horsham.gov.uk Horsham District Council, working with Groundwork South, an independent environment and economy organisation, is running the roadshows to offer free and impartial advice to residents on how to keep energy bills as low as possible, whilst keeping homes warm enough. Groundworks South is offering advice on accessing the Warm Homes Discount, which equates to £140 credit on electricity accounts. They will provide advice on grant schemes for insulation and replacement boilers, and give guidance on switching energy suppliers. The average home could save around £250 per year by simply switching energy provider or moving tariff. Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “We know the cost of energy bills is one of the biggest outgoings for our residents and that this can be a major worry. “Through the Warm Homes project, we hope to improve the lives of as many residents as possible within local communities who are struggling with their fuel bills and ensure they can stay warm and healthy in their homes this winter.”

Thieves steal quad bike, Panto crowds amaze charity in record run in Henfield burglary
Burglars stole a valuable quad bike, cash and jewellery from a Henfield house. Police have appealed for help in tracing the thieves. Between 2.30pm- 4pm on January 29 burglars entered the rear garden of an end-of-terrace property in Staples Barn, a road in Henfield. They forced entry to the back of the house and stole a white Quadzilla Buzz 50cc quad bike valued at about £1000 from the utility room, as well as cash and jewellery
items. Detective Constable Chris Meryfield-Day, of Sussex Police, said:"If you were in and around Staples Barn that afternoon and saw anything suspicious, or if you hear of this distinctive bike being offered for sale, please contact us via 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 1235 of 29/01. Crowds at a record-breaking Horsham panto raised what charity bosses are calling an “amazing” amount to help their work. Audiences dropped £7,587.13 into buckets during the run of Beauty and the Beast at the town’s Capitol. The money will help Horsham and Crawley Samaritans in its work. Sue Jago, Director of Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley, said: “We’re immensely grateful to The Capitol pantomime cast and their generous patrons for this collection. “As a local branch we are responsible for raising all the money needed to stay open and whilst it is possible to obtain grants for specific projects, it is much more difficult to find the funds needed to keep our core service running. “This amazing sum of money will go a long way towards supporting our callers this year.” Nick Mowat, general manager of The Capitol said: “A huge thank you to all who came to see our record breaking Beauty and The Beast.” “On behalf of Horsham District Council, The Capitol and the Beauty and The Beast Company, I was delighted to present this cheque to such a vital organisation. The work that the charity does is invaluable and to be in a position where, thanks to our audience’s kindness we are able to help provide such a significant level of support is immensely gratifying and
humbling.”Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley has been supporting the local community from its Centre in Denne Road for 41 years and, with the national organisation of 200 other branches, provide a round the clock listening service to support those experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those that may lead to suicide. Its mission is to reduce the number of deaths by suicide. Every year the Horsham & Crawley branch takes more than 14,000 calls, welcomes
about 130 personal visitors to the branch and answers more than a thousand emails and texts. Samaritans can be contacted on: 116 123, a free to call number from landlines, mobiles and phone boxes. Bon Jovi a hit with pupils Help make Horsham fit for a Queen
R
Livin’ on a Prayer paid off for young singers at a school. They used the 1986 Bon Jovi hit from the album Slippery When Wet to win The Church Street Choir Competition. Other songs featured in the contest at Steyning Grammar Upper School included The Duran Duran hit Rio and the Queen hit Radio Gaga. The contest gets its name from the school’s Church street site and is performed at school’s main drama hall. The tutor group 7CMK, with the support of its tutor science teacher Charlotte Kendrick, was chosen as this year’s winners with its rendition of ‘Livin on a Prayer’. Jo Clear, Assistant Headteacher at Church Street, said: “This was a wonderful community event where over 300 students get to perform on a stage and in front of a large audience,
along with lights and a fantastic live band. How often does that happen?” Music teacher Dave Berliner conducted and the choirs were supported by Jon Reeves, Learning Leader for Music and students giving musical accompaniment. Nick Wergan said: “It takes grit and zest to sing confidently in front of your peers, and we saw these learning characteristics in abundance. The students gave each other great support and we are proud to be a ‘singing’ school.” The annual competition, which this year had a film theme, involved all year seven and eight students who compete as a choir in their tutor groups, with only the top choirs selected to compete in the final. The winning choir is pictured holding the cup, along with pictures of another group in action.
esidents and businesses are being invited to a clean-up day for Horsham next month. The litter blitz is part of the national ‘Clean for The Queen’ campaign in the run up to The Queen's birthday on April 21. Horsham’s big day is March 5 from 10am-noon, and is run by Horsham District Council. The campaign is taking place in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and was recently launched with a clean-up session in London. Clean-ups are taking place across the country in January, February and March, and the biggest of all collectively nationally will be from March 4-6, with Horsham’s timed for March 5. The aim is to inspire a million people to attempt the biggest clean-up in history and enjoy a few hours together litter-picking to make the places where we live more beautiful. The council says: “Perhaps your business has heard about this and wants to get involved? Encouraging some of your staff to organise litter picking for an hour or so might be a public way of showing that you care about your local environment whilst gaining some valuable public relations as part of this national campaign. “Horsham District Council is supporting this campaign, over and
above the cleaning that we already put in place around Horsham town centre. We would like to hear about any plans or clean up events your business may be thinking of organising for this campaign so that we can help support and promote your event.” The council says that anyone wishing to organise their own activity can run them up to March 6. It said: “We can provide equipment to help you in your work - whether it is bin bags, high vis jackets or pick up sticks. But hurry – our resources are limited and they are only available on a first come, first served basis so please let us know as soon as possible. “The aim of this campaign is the hope that these activities will leave a legacy, that they will encourage more people to reduce their litter habit, and to help us all to live more sustainably - and your
involvement may gain you extra credit by association. We have created a dedicated web pageabout what is taking place across the district which we will then promote through the media and social media channels.” Please let the council know via Sarah Hogben Email: sarah. hogben@horsham.gov.uk. telephone: 01403 215242 if you would like to join the litter pick or send me details of your own chosen clean up event as soon as possible. Details needed are location, start and finish time, activity description and any extra notes, Contact details. You can also add your details to the Clean for The Queen website. Please register at www.cleanforthequeen.co.uk where you’ll find advice and tips about how to join a group or to promote your own litter picking activity.

Help kids wiggle to support charity Holiday activities on offer
Children in Horsham district can join in “Giant Wiggles” for charity. Leading charity Action for Children and “The World of Eric Carle” are encouraging children’s centres, nurseries and groups for under-fives in West Sussex to host a ‘Giant Wiggle’ during the week of March 21-27 to celebrate the UK’s best-selling children’s book, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar.’ The sponsored event will bring together under-fives to form a giant caterpillar conga line and take part in creative storytelling, arts, crafts, nature trails and healthy eating, which are all aspects of the much-loved children’s book. Action for Children’s Ruth Sorby said: “We want to celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ by en-
couraging children to get active and have fun. “The money raised by your Giant Wiggle will help us to support disadvantaged children, young people and families in the heart of communities in the South East, and across the UK.” More than 85,000 children and families have taken part in the Giant Wiggle since 2014, raising more than £150,000 for Action for Children. Youngsters are being offered half term and Easter activities by Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team. The council says there is something for every youngster as the programme involves excursions, sports, arts and outdoor pursuits to cater for different ages and both genders. Minibus excursions will involve ventures out to Blacklands Farm, a multi-purpose activity centre near East Grinstead to get to grips with a number of the challenges that the outdoor education centre has on offer and a trip to Guildford Spectrum leisure complex will offer opportunities to go ice skating and swimming. There will be more of the ever popular sport and arts camps at Forest Recreation Centre and Collyer’s Sixth Form College that provide a range of exciting activities including a street dance afternoon which is new for the February half-term . Nick Scott, the council’s outdoor pursuits specialist, will be running more adventure days, both at Stan-
ford Camp, Pease Pottage and Holmbush Farm, off the A264. These will include archery sessions, mountain bike rides and cycling camps. Additionally Calum Callan, a professional golfer, will be running various junior golf opportunities at Cottesmore Golf Club. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: "Health and wellbeing are core to the vision of Horsham as a great place to live. Part of that vision are the many opportunities offered in the district to participate in sport and healthy activities. It is especially important during school holidays. “So this half-term and Easter I think it is great that Horsham District Council Sports Development team are offering such an exciting and diverse programme of activities. Concern over flight changes Pupils take time out for Smita Warren Campaigners watching developments at Gatwick say Horsham and nearby areas could be affected by flight changes. CAGNE says proposals to bring easterly arrivals at 3,000 ft will add to the issue of what it calls a “constant stream of departing aircraft to the west.” The group pledged to take the matter up with Gatwick Airport, before the proposed implementation of changes from March. CAGNE says the areas likely to be affected are Barnes Green, Southwater Warnham, Kingsfold, Winterfold, Rowhook, Slinfold, and potentially Horsham.
In a statement CAGNE chairman Sally Pavey said: “Gatwick arrival team did not provide residents with any mapping to how this change would affect them prior to the issuing of this report; these residents being the ones that already suffer departures at 3,000ft and are now expect to receive a constant stream of arrivals at a similar height.” “CAGNE will now take this matter up with the Chairman of Gatwick Airport as we feel that these residents suffer enough and will be vindicated in being very angry at this arrival proposal especially as it is proposed that the review proposals should be implemented by March this year.

Youngsters got some expert advice on how to manage their work time from an expert. Smita Warren, a qualified actuary at the Royal Society of Arts, told Collyer’s college students at Horsham how to be generally more effective with ‘work time’ to enable ‘guilt free play time’. Collyer’s student Lauren Hillyard said: “It was a real eye opener to realise how much time I waste. I now have some practical tools to help me use my time more effectively.” Fellow student Sharon Presicci added: “It was useful to focus on achieving the task. rather than allocating a set amount of time, when studying. The ‘Master List’ and tools to help you achieve goals will be really valuable to me.” During the session, students enjoyed a presentation, took part in group management tasks and also had the opportunity to ask Smita questions. Smita said: “All of the Collyer’s students were attentive and en-
thusiastic. “It was great to have the opportunity to chat to some of them afterwards about their studies and career goals, and to offer
them practical advice on achieving them”. Students are pictured at the session.

Keen long distance walkers are being sought to raise money for the Blind Veterans UK charity. They are invited to sign up for a 100 kilometre walk from London to Brighton in 24 hours in July while raising money for a great cause. Blind Veterans UK supports vision-impaired ex-Service men and women and believes no one who has served our country should battle sight loss alone. The money raised from the 100k London to Brighton will enable the charity to support veterans to live independently. Registration for the 100k, which will kick off in Fulham on July 2, is currently open with a registration fee of £62.50 for the 100km until February 26.For those not wanting to walk the full distance there is also a relay option available for teams of four walking 25k each. Teams taking part in the relay have a registration fee of £110. The all-inclusive entrance fee for participants includes lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops, snacks and refreshments along the route and a free event t-shirt. The London to Brighton 100k challenge is Blind Veterans UK’s biggest annual fundraiser and takes participants from a starting point in south west London, along the banks of the Thames, through countryside paths in Surrey, Sussex and the North and South Downs to the charity’s centre in Ovingdean, Brighton.
Victoria Marshall, Fundraising Events Officer at Blind Veterans UK, said: “This is an exciting challenging event which will allow participants to enjoy the sunrise over the South Downs while raising money for charity. Many of the veterans the charity supports are taking part in the 100k themselves. It is a great opportunity to meet them and hear
their inspiring stories. “All you need to do is train hard and turn up on the day in your free event t-shirt. We will provide lunch, dinner and breakfast at three rest stops along with snacks, refreshments and encouragement!” To sign up for the Blind Veterans UK 100k, please visit www.blindveterans.org.uk/100k.

Bill tells incredible story in new book
The story of an Olympic athlete from Cowfold who was one of the finest pilots of the Second World War has been revealed in a new book. Bill Lucas features in Sussex War Heroes, which tells the stories of nine veterans. A promising athlete, Bill had set his sights on a medal in the 5,000m at the 1940 Helsinki Games. But when war was declared the Games were cancelled and he joined Bomber Command. He said: “Hitler denied me the chance of that gold medal, so I decided to bomb him instead.” He soon emerged as a skilled pilot and was sent out on near nightly raids targeting Germany’s best defended cities. Time and time again, he kept his crew safe and navigated his aircraft through the flak and searchlights. He said: “It was frightening but you had to hold your nerve, if you didn’t then you wouldn’t make it home.” Bill was part of some of the most influential raids including the first 1,000 bomber raid on Cologne and the controversial bombing of Dresden. By the end of the war he had flown a daunting 81 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The book by Sussex journalist Ben James tells how, with the war over,
Bill turned his attention back to athletics and began training for the 1948 Olympics in London. He lined up against the world’s best, but given his advancing years, he was past his prime and was beaten by one of the greats, Czechoslovakia’s Emil Zátopek. He said: “The war just crept up on us all and things had to be put to one side. But I can’t complain, I made it through, unlike so many others.” Other Sussex veterans featured in the book include Jack Lyon, who
was part of the Great Escape; Bob Morrell, who spent three years as a Japanese prisoner of war and Shindy Perez, who survived Auschwitz’s gas chambers. Sussex War Heroes, by Ben James, is available at £12.99 in all good bookshops, online (amazon.co.uk) and by calling 01235 465500. Bill is pictured with medals and looking at his flight log of 81 wartime sorties. Also pictured is his flight log of a 1,000 bomber Cologne raid, and the book cover.

Firefighters warn locals Sussex Folklore: Wombat on the loose to “watch what you heat”
F
irefighters in West Sussex are urging microwave users to ‘watch what they heat’ in a bid to drive down the number of cooking-related fires and encourage safer heating habits. In the 12 months to December 31 2015 firefighters across West Sussex have been called to 28 fires involving microwaves,. This is often because recommended heating times have been accidentally exceeded or because the items were not suitable for the microwave. To help raise awareness of the dangers of overheating firefight-
ers have filmed a controlled experiment in which a microwavable pudding was set to heat for 6 minutes rather than the recommended 60 seconds. The clip shows that after only three minutes of heating smoke is beginning to pour from the microwave. Russell Moore, a Crew Manager, who carried out the experiment, said: “Fire crews in West Sussex have been called to microwave fires started by everything from wheat bags to puddings, pies, chips, bread and even a toad in the hole! It sounds comical but not taking care with your microwave cooking can have very serious consequences and put lives at risk. “The experiment demonstrated how quickly your home could become filled with toxic smoke if items are overheated. One common problem is people miscalculating or incorrectly imputing heating times on their microwaves – it’s an easy mistake to make to press one button too many on a digital timer or get seconds confused with minutes. “The best way to reduce the risk of a fire in your microwave is to ensure you follow the recommended heating instructions, double check your timings and keep an eye on what you are cooking.”
In 1926, the coastline of Sussex had a very, very strange visitor. For many years I’ve written articles and books in relation to strange, out of place animals turning up but one story which has always held my fascination concerns the unusual visitation of a marsupial to British shores. During the festive season of 1926 there was much consternation at Beachy Head – a place I’ve written about in previous articles for The District Post. A Mr T.A. Bridger had shot dead an animal measuring over thirty-inches in length, and weighing over forty pounds. Mr Bridger had encountered the odd animal on his Beachy Head farm and shot it; The Daily Mirror newspaper at the time featured a photograph of Mr Bridger with the animal which at the time caused quite a stir as many people tried to fathom its identity. Whatever the animal was there were assumptions that it had somehow escaped from a menagerie; or due to its condition bolted from a ship and somehow made its way ashore. Sadly, its venture was cut short by the gun of Mr Bridger who felt that
Hold it right there!
the creature may have been a danger to his livestock at Bullock Down Farm. An article at the time; which appeared in the Daily Express mentioned how the animal “has short legs… It has large claws as if for digging, four teeth; two in the upper and two in the lower jaw and no tail.” The article also went on to describe how the unusual critter is “covered in silver grey fur and has a pouch like that in which a kangaroo carries its young” and it was this ‘pouch’ which enabled a number of people to identify it. A wombat! Now, Sussex is the last place one would expect to see a wombat – after, all these short-legged, muscular animals are native to Australia and whilst able to survive in numerous habitats from heathlands to forest; are best suited to the southeastern climes of Down Under than Sussex. So many theories came forward to explain the appearance of the creature; but whereas many strange animal cases tend to remain a mystery it appears that this particular puzzle was solved quickly because a few
weeks before a dead baby elephant had washed ashore at Worthing and it seemed very likely – according to some - that the unfortunate wombat was part of the same zoo cargo that was wrecked off the Sussex coast a month or so previous. I don’t know what others animals were aboard that ship; or if they all perished in the waves or by a farmer’s gun but this wouldn’t be the first, or the last time that some non-native animal had turned up in south-east England. Lions, bears, all manner of snakes, primates, wolves, coypu, a kangaroo and even a hyena have turned up around the ancient woods of this historic county but the story of the wombat did not end there. However, with the mystery seemingly solved it would be some time before the actual truth of the story came to light with an article in the Daily Express commenting that the animal had in fact belonged to the estate of one Hayley Moriss of Pippingford Park. The lady in question had been in possession of numerous exotic animals; including the wombat which had already escaped once before but been recaptured and a mate was purchased to keep the female company. The male wombat lived around the estate and would come to the back door of the property and call for food but sadly its new mate didn’t hang around long; having been shot dead some twenty miles away off Beachy Head. One can only wonder just what other exotic animals are living wild in the leafy parts of Sussex…

One month of Bodywise It has now been a month since I first started my fitness regime and I am delighted with the results, not just on paper, but also how I feel in myself. I must admit that I have never found myself able to stick to anything for so long, which is quite embarrassing! I am the typical join a gym, do the induction, buy the new gym wear, park as close as I can to the entrance and go four or five times in January yet pay the whole year! However, this time has been different, and I really do have Mitzi Sanderson, Bodywise owner and personal trainer, to thank. She has supported me throughout my battle to get fit and during any difficult days when I just wanted to eat chocolate and not move. Mitzi got me through this and I felt so much better for it. To be honest, this is probably the time most beginners give up, but I was determined to not let a few sins stop me this time. A very noticeable 13.7 inch loss has made this first month worth while. There is still a long way to go and accepting that is the next challenge. I feel that what lies in store for me now will not be easy. Mitzi is fantastic at challenging me to new exercises and keeps it fresh. Though on occasion we just have to laugh at how my co-ordination is more like an ostrich than an athlete!

Mitzi Sanderson Mitzi said: “Chrissie has come on leaps and bounds, not only in her fitness, but in her confidence and complete wellbeing. “Chrissie is now part of the gym community - she is not nervous to talk to people and exchange stories about how the gym makes her feel. I am very proud of how she has taken on the task. “Her fitness levels have improved greatly, from five minutes on the bike on a low level to running (yes,
running) on the treadmill after only four weeks. It is amazing and she has worked really hard and stuck to her goals. “Her strength and knowledge of exercise is great. Not only has Chrissie’s strength increased, she is now aware of what muscle groups she is working and how she should feel whilst doing the exercises. “The fitness results speak for themselves... I am looking forward to the next eight weeks.”

Help for Knee Pain & Tennis Elbow ‘Chiropractic treatment has changed my life because my general mobility and feeling of well-being has improved. I had experienced increasing pain in my knee for forty years, leading me to believe I would need joint replacement surgery. My treatment at BritChiro has resulted in me being able to walk up and down stairs normally – not taking one step at a time and holding on to the bannister as before. I am not pain free, but the improvement was immediate and continues and my knees feel as they did fifteen or twenty years ago. Initially I consulted BritChiro for a spinal and neck problem, then later for tennis elbow and knee treatment. My experience at BritChiro has been first class. Treatment with both Charlene and Peter has greatly improved my back and knee conditions and completely eradicated the tennis elbow.’ Sheila Humphrey, Retired Civil Servant ,Horsham

And, I’m thrilled to say that our new cake creation service is proving really popular to celebrate the special family occasions that we love to host at Carmela!” Regular customers love the unique friendly and unhurried Carmela atmosphere presented in such an especially attractive medieval building, Rossella saying: “We’ve renovated it from top to toe to provide a touch of Sicily in charismatic, rustic surroundings with an inviting, warm, family quality, and it’s always enjoyable to see our terrace buzzing!” Carmela has a bespoke meeting room, too, which with free Wi-Fi is much appreciated for business meetings. And, in response to public demand Carmela has opened a mouth-watering delicatessen in the Carfax to transport fortunate consumers, in house or to take away, with a sumptuous array of succulent Italian specialities not available elsewhere in the town. Meanwhile, Rossella sums up: “I fell in love with Horsham on my first visit, it’s such a friendly town and it’s a constant pleasure for us to welcome familiar faces – we also look forward to making new friends, for a nice lunch or dinner!” Rare treats await those lucky enough to visit Carmela and its town centre deli - www.carmelas.co.uk – 01403 275375

The 3rd CAMRA Spring Don’t forget Valentine’s Day! Equinox Festival The CAMRA North Sussex Equinox Beer & Cider Festival returns to the Drill Hall in Horsham for the third year, with a slightly earlier date of March 5-6 to avoid clashing with Easter. The main change this year is that there is free admission for the Sunday session, to help us try and drink the event dry by the time we close at 4, and encourage people who only want a pint or two to pop in. There has been huge growth in the number of brewers in recent years, and a number of the new local beers will be available to try. We will also continue to support and showcase all our local brewers and cider-makers, and are delighted to confirm that the current Champion Beer of Britain, Tiny Rebel’s Cwtch, described as a very untraditional Welsh Red ale, will be making it to Horsham from South Wales. For a full beer list, please go to our website www. northsussexcamra.org.uk. The acoustic music scene in Horsham is particularly strong, and was a real feature of the first event. We will again be providing an excellent
line up for the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon sessions. Tickets at £6 for the Saturday 12-4 and 6-10 sessions are still available for the event, from Beer Essentials and the Malt Shovel in Horsham, or contact camra.equinox@gmail.com.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.
How could you forget? Well some people do and if this article prevents a single person from going home to be met by a stony wall of silence, it will have served its purpose. But that means that now you have been reminded there may be a financial consequence – Valentine’s Day is expensive and there are some breath-taking statistics such as: On average men spend £40 on Valentine’s Day whereas women spend on average £24 (surprise you as it may). Jewellery sales peak on 8th February in anticipation of the big day; clearly no last minute purchases at the petrol station! 10% of all marriage proposals take place on Valentine’s Day. The UK as a whole spends £595 million on Valentine’s Day (13% on jewellery, 15% on spa treatments, 17% on a car and 27% on a holiday). In the US the spending will rocket to $18.9 billion from which 58 million pounds of chocolate will be consumed. However, the one statistic that they have overlooked is the percentage shift in work of family lawyers from relationship breakdown to the happier getting together. We do know that the cohabitation rate has gone up and happily the divorce rate is starting to fall. There is no science in this but the work of RB’s Family Department (based in the Carfax) is reflecting this trend by increasingly tailoring their service to meet the demand for Cohabitation and PreNuptial Agreements. This explains why on the eve of Valentine’s weekend the paper is giving space to family lawyers who are also involved with the positive side of relationships. And there is indeed much to be positive about and consideration of this article is not in any sense unromantic. If you think it is then rip this page out and save it until the 15th February when you might like to consider the following:Living Together? 1. There is no such thing as a ‘common law marriage’ in English law. How your assets will be divided upon a subsequent separation is completely arbitrary and coincidental and sometimes may boil down to as little as how the Judge interprets what you intended from your conduct? 2. It is possible that in the event of a subsequent separation one party may inherit 50% of the value of the home in which they live even though they didn’t necessarily make any contribution to purchasing the home. That may apply in the event of death where they may inherit 100% of the property. 3. It is therefore essential that there is a clause regulating what happens in respect of the capital in the event of a breakdown. During the life of the relationship advice needs to be sought on how the mortgage payments are made. 4. If one party is in a position to make additional contributions be it by way of improvements to the property etc. these need to be dealt with in the Agreement. 5. In respect of those items that you purchase together how are these going to be divided? 6. Debt – alas there are very few people without any debt and you may have to give consideration as to how these will be dealt with.
The understanding that you may feel that you have as you are about to embark on the relationship is unlikely to survive the contrary understanding that your partner ultimately thinks you had at the end of a relationship. If however you emerge from Valentine’s weekend with your life mapped out ahead of you with your partner – congratulations. Or Getting Married? A marriage that is built to last will withstand a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. The use of Pre-Nuptial Agreements in the UK has literally ‘rocketed’ in recent years. Madonna had one and saved a fortune. Ashleigh Cole did not and one suspects she wished she had. There a whole host of reasons for a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. In particular if you are wealthier than your partner, earn more, have your own business, already have children from a previous relationship or are proposing to leave your job to raise children or your partner has a higher level of debt. The list is literally endless. However a Pre-Nuptial Agreement may address the following:1. Given that the divorce law carries inherent uncertainty you may wish to ensure that you are not exposed to this at a later date and endeavour to dictate a subsequent settlement. This can lead to a significant saving in legal costs at a later date. 2. There’s evidence that there is a reluctance to marry because of the uncertainty about divorce. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement may remove that un-
certainty and encourage the reluctant bride or groom to ‘take the plunge’. 3. You may wish to agree for provision for any of your children from a previous relationship or any future children that you may have within the marriage. 4. You may wish to preserve previously acquired assets. 5. You may wish to protect a subsequent inheritance. 6. You may just wish to retain some control. All of the foregoing are matters to be considered (ok, not the weight of chocolate consumed in America over Valentine’s Day) but whatever you do have a great weekend and remember; whilst diamonds are forever, legal advice can ensure you keep them! Long established clay shoot to continue Crickmay announce a The well-known Countryman Gun Club believed that 2015 would be their last year of shooting on Knepp Estate and that they were facing closure, after 46 years, if new grounds were not found. In a remarkable development the club is now set to continue, thanks to a new suggestion proposed by Sir Charles Burrell and the Knepp Estate, Shipley, Horsham, West Sussex. The club were saddened when informed, last October, that they would need to seek new grounds on which to shoot; however, a new proposal has been agreed by all which sees the gun club shooting throughout the year, with the exception of July and August. This timetable ensures that disturbance of the vital Wilding projects (taking place on Knepp Estate) will be avoided, and the club can continue to maintain their scoring records, which date back to 1971. The 100 member strong gun club, who have raised thousands of pounds in charitable donations over the years, are very pleased with the new way forward suggested by Knepp Estate Owner, Sir Charles Burrell. “This is the best solution all round, we will avoid the disturbance of important projects in the Wilding area of the Estate with no shooting in July and August but we will have a usual programme at other times. "We will also be able to continue our Open Shoots for fundraising and 'Have a Go' morning for 'beginners'. The Knepp Estate Safari trips through

the highly regarded Wilding area, and the visitors staying in the Glamping site nearby, will not need to worry about us and we respect that.” said Club Chairman David Meadows, adding: “We have also been very fortunate that we may hold four morning Sporting Shoots in the summer, to the west of Knepp, at Saucelands Farm.” Membership of the Countyman Gun Club is inclusive, encompass-
ing ladies, gentlemen and younger members from hamlets and villages across West Sussex. The club offers very low cost shooting, thanks to a dedicated group of shooters who give their time and expertise freely in keeping with the clubs non-profit making policy. If you are interested in finding out more about the Countryman Gun Club, please contact Chairman David Meadows on 01403 741379 or d.meadows377@btinternet.com

JoJo Maman Bébé to open boutique in Horsham
JoJo Maman Bébé, the UK’s leading mother and baby boutique brand, will open a new store in Horsham, at 7 Sterling Buildings, Carfax on Friday February 12. The store will stock the full range of quirky and imaginative baby and children’s collections, a complete maternity collection plus nursery products, gifts and toys. JoJo Maman Bébé’s company ethos is to help regenerate local high streets, rather than open in big retail parks like much of the nursery market competition. Horsham’s thriving town centre is the perfect spot for parents to enjoy visiting this lovely store, complete with facilities such as a baby changing room and customer WC, nursing chair and children’s colouring corner. There is also a gorgeous maternity section where pregnant customers are welcome to take their time trying on the exclusive maternity range and take advan-
tage of free maternity bra fitting. JoJo’s store teams are given indepth training at their head office in Wales and really understand the needs of pregnant women and new parents. There will be lots of exciting opportunities to celebrate the opening of the new shop - JoJo will be offering all customers who make a purchase over the opening weekend a “Pick-a-prize” discount worth 10%, 20% or 50% depending on what is drawn from their lucky dip basket. Loyal local mail order customers of this multi-channel brand have been campaigning for a JoJo store in the area. Finally after searching, JoJo is set to become a destination shop for parents and grandparents from across the area, as well as the place to go for new baby gifts. The good news is already gathering momentum via social networking channels. Laura Tenison,
Founder and MD explains: “Our multi-channel retail strategy also helps other independent businesses in the area, even if they are of a competitive nature. Just before opening, we will email customers within a 30 mile radius and incentivise them to visit the town and our store. They are likely to spend time with neighbouring retailers and cafés as well as our new store, so it’s a win-win situation for all of us.” JoJo was launched 23 years ago as a tiny kitchen-table business with the stock held in a shed belonging to Laura’s parents in Wales. The company has grown organically and now has over 70 stores as well as trade sales to 50 countries. Despite this phenomenal growth, JoJo continues to operate with small company values and places a huge emphasis on great quality, fantastic customer service, environmental sustainability and loyalty to all involved.

National treasures Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick embark on rare UK duo tour Two leading interpreters of English folk traditions - folk guitarist/singer, Carthy, and squeezebox virtuoso/singer, Kirkpatrick - are long-time collaborators in a variety of seminal musical projects; from John’s iconic 1976 Morris tunes album Plain Capers through Steeleye Span to Brass Monkey. John Kirkpatrick’s deep love of music was instilled from birth, and family gatherings always included a hearty sing-song. School choirs, the Church choir, playing recorder and piano ensued, until he joined the Hammersmith Morris Men, in their second week, in 1959. While with the team, he took up the melodeon, then the button accordion, then the anglo concertina, and got hooked on the traditional songs that were accompanied with a post-dancing pint. John has gone on to become one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene, performing solo, in duos, acoustic groups and electric bands, and has established an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso and session musician, as well as a leading interpreter of English folk music. He has been a member of the Albion Country Band, Magic Lantern,
The Richard Thompson Band, Umps and Dumps, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey, Trans-Europe Diatonique and Band of Hope, as well as numerous ceilidh bands. For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best-loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, only 10 of which have been solo. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage, or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed Originals music documentary strand on BBC 2), there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played. He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influ-

enced a generation of artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. In June 1998 Carthy was appointed an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. He was named Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2002, and again in 2005. Don’t miss your chance to see
these two giants of the folk world, perform live. Book now! Performance on February 26 at 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley Tickets, priced £18 (£19.50 on the door), can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth. co.uk.

Play ‘Ireland's Call’ marks centenary Exactly one hundred years since the historic 1916 ‘Easter Rising’, one of the pivotal events in modern Irish history, Ireland’s Call comes to the Hawth in Crawley on March 8 and to the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne, on May 5, as part of a UK tour. Inspired by true events and spanning three decades, this uplifting musical tells the story of one man’s love for his Irish homeland. The story follows the extraordinary journey of the strong-headed Sean Dempsey, who, at the end of World War II, leaves behind his childhood sweetheart Cora and his beloved homeland Ireland, in search of a better life in the Big Apple. Can their love survive the Atlantic Divide? Will Sean be able to resist ‘Ireland’s call’ as he embarks on an adventure full of danger, tragedy and lost love? Only fate will tell… Creative Director Ged Graham believes 2016 is the perfect time to launch the show. He says: “We are really looking forward to bringing the show to stages across the world, starting with some of the UK’s most prestigious venues in 2016, a year set to be a huge celebration of Irish culture to commemorate the centenary of The Easter Rising.” Ged Graham was born in the Liberties in Dublin and remembers moving to the UK when he was nine. He says: “Everyone has been separated from loved ones and their homes at some point in their lives, so this is a story that people can really engage with and relate to, myself included. The audience is drawn in to the story and swept on a journey that is both heartbreaking and heart-

The Anern Trio – three top musicians On February 27, a charity concert will be performed at St.Mark's Church, North Heath Lane, by a group of outstanding string players, in support of Chestnut Tree House, childrens' hospice. The concert opens with the Trio Concertante in D major by Ignaz Pleyel. It serves as an 'hors d'oeuvre' to the 'main course' of Beethoven and Mozart. It is a short piece, very much music of its time, with dramatic harmonies which show the influence of the composer's teacher, Joseph Haydn. Pleyel himself, despite writing 40 symphonies and over 70 chamber works, is little known today as a composer. He is best remembered as a music publisher and most specially a piano maker. His factory provided pianos for Chopin amongst others and he opened a concert hall in Paris, the Salle Pleyel, which still operates to this day. Next on the menu is the Trio in C minor by Beethoven, who composed three string trios Opus 9 and dedicated them to Count Johann Georg von Browne. He was 28 in 1799 when these trios were published in Vienna and they are seen as the forerunners and equal in quality to the early string quartets. Beethoven's fierce passion shows through this work, as do contrasts in rhythm, both of which are features of his later quartet writings. After the interval comes the Divertimento in E flat major K563, by

PETs POST

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Caring for your horse in the winter
abbi moon RSPCA
The RSPCA, Redwings Horse Sanctuary and World Horse Welfare, carried out a joint operation to remove 44 horses from a property in Sussex at the start of December. The horses had been living wild on the 150 acre property for many years and with three resident stallions, had been breeding excessively in three separate herds. With ample grass and space, there were no welfare concerns for the horses at this time, however, left over the winter months, this could have been a different story. The owner, who was unable to cope with the number of animals, agreed to sign over the vast majority of the horses. The RSPCA co-ordinated the operation over two days, with the invaluable assistance from the Redwings Horse Sanctuary team to round-up and load the horses, and World Horse Welfare taking all 44 horses into their care for rehabilitation and rehoming. This event in RSPCA Sussex North branch’s ‘patch’ made me think of how many other horse owners in our community may be struggling with the increasing pressure of animal ownership dur-

ing what has been a wet and muddy winter. The winter months are a challenge for horses and their owners. Horses and ponies must cope with everything the weather can throw at them, and owners must rise to the challenges of the extra care and attention needed by their fourlegged friends. In winter, the days are short and the nights are long.
A few questions to ask yourself: Does your field have adequate shelter? Does your horse have company? Have you got a good supply of extra feed? Are you registered with an equine veterinary practice? Do you know what your horse’s normal behaviour is like? A few questions to ask yourself: Does your field have adequate shelter? Does your horse have company? Have you got a good supply of extra feed? Are you registered with an equine veterinary practice? Do you know what your horse's normal behaviour is like? A good working routine is all important. Work out how you will manage to care for your horse in winter and make sure you can fit your horse's care package into your day. If you are unable to devote more time to your horse's care during the winter, consider keeping your horse at full livery, where there is adequate winter turnout and a high standard of daily care. Short days add to the complication of winter care. Make your first visit to your horse each day as early in the morning as you can. If there is a problem, you can call for assistance in daylight. If you plan to ride your horse in winter, beware of getting your horse sweated up in the afternoon. Horses can easily catch a chill. Make arrangements with an experienced person to take care of your horse in the event of an emergency, for example if you are ill, delayed or cut off by bad weather. Network amongst local horse owners; you may be able to share horse care with a like-minded friend. Above all, remember that your horse needs you. Your horse has been your friend through the lovely summer months of riding, competitions and carefree days. Be your horse's friend when the weather's cold and your horse needs your help.

Ashington Surgery 01903 254799 Proud to be a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons approved practice
11/06/2015 11:54
Veterinary nurses provide clinical care for animals in many ways, for example before, during and after surgery, taking x-rays, monitoring anaesthesia, performing laboratory tests, advising owners and tending to hospitalised patients. The route to becoming a registered veterinary nurse involves several years of training, either via a diploma (apprenticeship) or a degree. Both of these courses involve being trained and assessed to an agreed set of industry standards both in college and in the workplace. Examinations (including practical exams) must be passed in order to qualify - but currently there is no legal protection for the title, so anyone can call themselves a veterinary nurse even if they have no training or qualifications. In August 2015, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons launched a petition to ask the government to protect the title 'veterinary nurse' to try to prevent the public from being misled and animals' health and welfare from being compromised. The government have responded by explaining that they will not be introducing legislation to criminalise improper use of the title 'veterinary nurse', but the petition will be
open until 14th February so please consider giving us your support! If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in parliament and if not, the more evidence that we have of support for protecting the title the more likely it is that we will be able to achieve this change in the future. The petition can be found at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/106153 In the meantime, never be afraid to ask if the people treating your pets are qualified and registered. Registered veterinary nurses, in addition to being qualified have their own Code of Professional Conduct, they are accountable for their own actions, and declare annually that they have undertaken the required amount of continued professional development - constantly learning and keeping their skills up to date. Here at Arun Veterinary Group, you can rest assured that nine of our nurses are qualified and registered, and the other three are working hard at their studies and aiming to qualify as soon as they can! Please visit our website to find out more about our nursing team! http://www.arunvetgroup.co.uk

Lift up the lip and check your dog’s teeth
Dental disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats, and is entirely preventable. By three years of age, most dogs and cats have evidence of dental disease. Unfortunately, other than bad breath, there are few signs of the disease process visible to the owner, and professional dental treatment often comes too late to prevent extensive disease or to save teeth. Consequently dental disease is usually under-treated, and may cause many problems and can be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age. Dental disease begins when bacteria in the mouth form plaque that sticks to the surface of the teeth. Subsequently, minerals in the saliva harden the plaque into tartar, which is firmly attached to the teeth. Tartar above the gum line is obvious to many owners, but is not of itself the cause of disease. The real problem develops as plaque and tartar spread under the gum line. Bacteria in this ‘sub-gingival’ plaque set in motion a cycle of damage to the supporting tissues around the tooth, eventually leading to loss of the tooth. The initial changes cause white blood cells to move into the the space between the gum or bone and the tooth. These white blood cells destroy the bacterial invaders, but chemicals released by the white blood cells cause damage to the supporting tissues of the tooth. Instead of helping the problem, the patient’s own protective system actually worsens the disease when there is severe build-up of plaque and tartar. Dental disease includes inflam-
mation of the gums and periodontitis (loss of bone and soft tissue around the teeth). There is a wide range in the appearance and severity of periodontal disease, which often cannot be properly evaluated or treated without general anesthesia for veterinary patients. Effects within the mouth include damage to gum tissue and bone around the teeth, fractures of the jaw following weakening of the jaw bone, and bone infection. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and are carried around the body and studies in dogs have shown that dental disease is associated with microscopic changes in the heart, liver, and kidneys. Treatment of dental disease is multi-faceted. If your pet has tartar or large amounts of plaque present, professional dental cleaning is required, including an oral examination, scaling and polishing. Dental radiographs may be required to correctly diagnose and assist in treatment of patients with extensive disease. The patient’s overall health, the cost of specific treatments, and the owner’s willingness to provide home dental care should be taken into account prior to any treatment Home oral care can improve the dental health of the patient; decrease the progression of the disease and the frequency of professional dental cleaning. Implementing home oral care at a young age can help the pet accept life-long oral care. When properly cared for, teeth can remain in a healthy condition, and the risk of associated health complications can be reduced. So lift the lip and check your pet's teeth!

Joggers’ Ryan and Pete Horsham Tri Club excel at Chichester span the generations Athletics
Neil Boniface (71) led the team home while Pete O'Connell (315) is now top of UK rankings
Horsham Tri Club saw an excellent turnout for the 25th Chichester 10k race last weekend. 15 club members took part in perfect sunny but crisp running conditions in what was a final preparation for the upcoming Brighton Half Marathon. The club has split its Brighton Half Marathon entrants into two training groups, those aiming to finish in under 2 hours 15 mins, and those aiming at 1 hour 30 minutes. Many Tri Club runners produced new personal bests with a particular mention to GB age-grouper Paul Blackmore who finished in 37.52 and 15 year old Luke McPherson who raced in his first 10k finishing in an extremely respectable time of 48.24. Anyone interested in learning more about Horsham Tri Club and for information on a month’s free trial look at their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter at @horshamtriclub.

New Slinfold captain is over the Rainbow Ladies Golf The customary New Year change of Captains at Slinfold Golf & Country Club has taken place. The traditional welcome to new Lady Captain, Jill Meek, was due to be played early in the year but was delayed because of the bad weather. Finally the weather improved sufficiently for thirty-four ladies to compete in the Lady Captain’s drive in. This year’s Lady Captain Jill has nominated The Rainbow Trust as her charity of the year. Raising money for charity has become an important part of the Lady Captain’s role and Jill plans to put plenty of effort into raising as much money as possible for the Rainbow Trust children’s charity.
Talking about the charity, Jill said: “The Rainbow Trust does incredible work by supporting families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. Support is available for the whole family 24/7, 365 days a year and it is tailored to the needs of the family. I am pleased to have the chance to boost support for the charity’s excellent work”. In keeping with the role of Lady Captain, Jill rounded off the day by presenting well-deserved prizes. In first place was immediate past Lady Captain, Ann Grain, followed by Melanie Wedgbury in second place, Brenda O’Brien in third, Evelyn Rock in fourth, Heather Culshaw in fifth and Lady Captain, Jill Meek in sixth. The two ‘nearest the pin’ prizes
were won by Di Dodds and Anne Ditchfield on the 2nd and 7th holes respectively. Slinfold Lady Captain Jill Meek is supporting the Rainbow Trust

The U13 Horsham Hawks remain top of the Sussex League after a victory over the Haywards Heath Golden Eagles. Horsham’s Antonio Lozzi and Harry Rose opened the scoring but it was the Golden Eagles who seized the early initiative taking an 8-7 lead six minutes into the contest. The Hawks responded with four quick points from Charlotte Willcox and a further eight from Josh Lea-Clayton, including a twenty foot buzzer beater as time expired to give the visitors a 21-10 lead after one quarter. In the second period the Hawks looked to build on their early advantage and went on an impressive 26-3 run underpinned by quick ball movement and exquisite finishing. Two baskets from Rose followed with scores from Oliver Brooker and Miguel Venturini saw Horsham’s advantage grow to nineteen points with six minutes remaining in the half. A spinning ten foot jump shot from Anaya Wakefield followed by strong rebounding and scoring from Josh Tavolieri extended Horsham’s advantage to 47-13 at the break.
U13 Hawks remain top of the league The second half saw a determined Hayward’s Heath team refuse to quit as both teams battled to a 10-10 stalemate over a five minute spell with well executed baskets from Horsham’s Meghan Stevens, Amy Willcox and Lea-Clayton. In the latter part of the period the Hawks refocused and regrouped putting together nine unanswered points to close out the third quarter and extend their lead to 68-24. Once again a resilient Golden Eagles team kept working and went on a 6-4 run of their own to open the
fourth quarter with a number of well taken rebounds and accurate shooting. The Hawks responded by raising their defensive intensity with Lozzi, Venturini and James Lowe stepping up. Late scores from Tavolieri and Fin Bennet sealed an 80-33 Hawks victory. Scorers: Josh Lea-Clayton - 18, Josh Tavolieri - 15, Harry Rose - 10, Antonio Lozzi – 8, Charlotte Willcox – 6, Fin Bennett- 4, Meghan Stevens – 4, Miguel Venturini – 4, Anaya Wakefield – 4, Oliver Brooker – 4, Amy Willcox – 3, James Lowe.

Win puts Horsham Horsham rally with a fighting draw in the driving seat Saturday February 6 – South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Div 1 Reading Ladies 1 - 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter

John Burroughs opened the scoring in Horsham's away win Saturday February 6 – South League Premier Div 2 Tulse Hill & Dulwich 2 - 3 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham have moved up to third with a strong win against the current runners up Tulse Hill & Dulwich. Earlier in the season Horsham suffered a narrow home defeat at the hands of the Londoners but savoured revenge after scoring twice in the opening five minutes, firstly when John Burroughs netted from close quarters after pin point passing from his fellow forwards cut through the hosts defence. Then, immediate pressure from Vice Captain Freddie Campbell earned a short corner converted by Matt Hough. Tulse Hill responded positively but were held at bay despite Horsham’s defence missing both player coach Dom Male – awaiting a consultant’s assessment of his long term hand injury – and stalwart campaigner Dom Cohen. Team Manager
Al Campbell told the District Post: “It was heart warming to see our young back line managing so well, Dan Humphreys and Noah Chinn were especially impressive.” Although Horsham had a 2 nil cushion at the break ferocious attacks resulted in Tulse Hill equalising within a quarter of an hour of the restart before end to end play saw Horsham create close range opportunities between athletic saves by their keeper Andy Isaacs. Sharing the points looked the most likely outcome until former skipper John Burroughs found room to supply hot shot Jack Dean who blasted in his 14th goal of the season. Al Campbell enthused: “We had to win that one – a great result for us, giving us a real promotion opportunity. We’ve got a tough assignment tomorrow (Saturday February 13) with an away trip to barnstorming leaders London Edwardians, but they lost 4-0 last week and we ran them close earlier in the season, so they’re not invincible. We’ve got eight more matches, including a game in hand, and if we keep winning then we’ll go up – it’s as simple as that!”
YM to unveil new away kit Football Tomorrow (Saturday February 13) is a red-letter day for Horsham YMCA FC, as the club launches its new away strip, albeit with a Premier Division fixture at home to Worthing United. The event to unveil the strip has been made possible thanks to the kind cooperation of the Southern Combination Football League and YM’s visitors, Worthing United. The new, all red away kit has been supplied by the YMCA Downslink Group, a registered charity working across Sussex and Surrey to provide a variety of services and projects to the local communities. The shirts feature the YMCA logo, as well as the name of the club’s partner charity, Cancer Research UK. Representatives from YMCA Downslink and Cancer Research will be at Gorings Mead for Saturday’s fixture where they will be made most welcome by the club.
YM President Ron Moulding holding the new away shirt
Horsham bounced back confidently from last week’s mauling at the hands of runaway leaders Surbiton with a highly creditable draw in a fast game in Berkshire. Both sides showed great determination, Horsham fighting back well with a Steph Dent goal after trailing one nil at the break. Elle Blakesley told the District Post: “We gave the win our best shot and it was pleasing to see us coming back so strongly after last week’s disappointment. Our keeper Hannah Simpson was awarded player of the match - she performed well throughout and her spectacular save in the second half enabled us to share the points. The Reading keeper also had a good game, making some good saves to keep her team in the hunt. Overall both sides delivered some very good hockey and the 1-1 draw was probably a fair result. Tomorrow (Saturday February 13) we’ve got Southgate at home – that’s a big game and we’ll certainly be coming out fighting!” Horsham, now fourth - on level points with third placed Barnes - drew 2-2 with Southgate in North London in October. Junior Football round up U12Billingshurst 2 - 3 U12Chesworth Rovers After many weeks rained off, Chesworth Rovers were back on the road for the short trip to Billingshurst. Following on from their league draw at Cranleigh, Chesworth took on local rivals Billingshurst. The first half played in 50mph winds and on heavy ground was a stalemate at 0 - 0. The second half saw the match come alive, Nyle crossed in a curling corner which was met by the rising Toby who with a powerful header put the Claret and Blue’s in the lead. Less than 5 minutes later and after the Chesworth ‘keeper had pulled off a double save, Toby fired in for 0-2. Billingshurst rallied and after what looked a clear foul on Chesworth keeper Leo they scored to narrow the Chesworth lead. Then, Still be-moaning the decision, Chesworth went to sleep at the back and Billingshurst drew level at 2 - 2. With 30 seconds left on the clock, Lewis gathered a clearance in the centre circle and smashed the ball over the ‘keper and into the top corner to secure the 2 - 3 victory that puts them 6 points clear at the top of the A league. U16 Roffey Robins Athletic 2 – 1 U16 Billingshurst Robins started the match in lively fashion and created several early chances, the best of which were
two powerful shots from Jack Roe. Despite their first half superiority Athletic were unable to beat the Billingshurst keeper and the match remained goal-less at the break. Robins’ efforts were rewarded in the second half with Alex Barker scoring twice, the first from a perfectly placed through ball from Nick Cranston, the second from the penalty spot. Billingshurst pulled one back late in the game and thought they had equalised in the dying minutes, but the effort was ruled offside. This result puts Robins in 3rd place with three games in hand over leaders Southwater. U15 Chesworth Rovers 13 – 1 U15 Ashington Cougars Ashington Cougars started with only 10 fit players, reduced to nine for the second half, and deserve great credit for playing the game when others would have forfeited, and for keeping going with great spirit as the goals rained in against them. They were unsurprisingly no match for high-flying Chesworth Rovers who scored in the first minute and rattled in six more before the break, with another half dozen in the second half. Seven players got onto Chesworth’s score sheet, with defenders Alex Bicknell and Connor Jones, Ewan Rennison with a brace, Max McAteer and Harry Bryant complementing hat-tricks from Michael Murray and Tim Bennett. U14 Roffey Robins 2 – 1 U14 Hor-
sham Sparrows On a blustery morning Horsham Sparrows took on Roffey Robins in a local derby. This was a keenly contested game with both sides producing some good football in difficult conditions. Sparrows took the lead when Alex headed home from a corner well delivered by Andrew. Their lead was cancelled out before half time when Roffey also scored from a corner. The second half was evenly balanced with both keepers making good saves. Roffey scored the winner from a long ball forward that was well finished giving Louis in goal no chance. Alex was Man of the Match for a good around performance and scoring Sparrows goal. U16 Albury Eagles 0 - 4 U16 Horsham Sparrows Due to numerous postponements Sparrows U16 boys played their first game of 2016, away to Albury Eagles. Sparrows made a promising start with several attempts on goal; Joel C hit the post, before putting Sparrows 1-0 up from distance after fifteen minutes. David H scored the second goal and then two minutes later added his second and his team’s third following a throw-in. Sparrows went in at half time with the three goal advantage. The second half saw more opportunities for Sparrows to extend their lead, but it wasn’t until the closing minutes of the game that Harry E scored the fourth from an Alex C pass to give Sparrows a good away win. Man of the Match was Charlie S.

Away win elevates Roffey Football Club launches the battling Pulborough Danny Lucas Memorial Tournament Saturday February 6 – London 3 South East Cranbrook 10 - 17 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter This elusive away win moves Pulborough up to seventh in the table with a game in hand, just two points behind fifth placed Park House. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “Although we weren’t quite as accurate as I would have liked, this week – unusually – our forwards pack was bigger, giving us dominance up front. The players we’ve brought in have improved our nucleus and it’s great to see newcomers like Byron Clark making a difference straight from debut. We turned things round with a strong performance when we played Park House and our home record is good but this was our first away win since
last season at Hastings. A bonus point win against Uckfield would give us the opportunity for a top half finish, which would be real progress, consolidating our league status.” At Cranbrook Andy Hodgkins scored Boro’s first try from a seven metre push over scrum before Ollie Paige notched up a second, both converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope, who kicked a subsequent penalty. Andy could also have had a second half try but the ball was ruled not to have been grounded. Cranbrook kept pushing but their kicking let them down before they scored a late consolation try. Tomorrow (Saturday February 13) Boro are away again, seeking another double – against bottom club Uckfield - who have lost their last 11 games, scoring 153 points and conceding 424 this season, both statistics being the worst in the league. Boro beat Uckfield 34-10 at home on November 7.

YM`s Dean Wright in action
Following last weekend’s postponement at Littlehampton Town, Horsham YMCA returned to Premier Division action on Saturday with a scrappy 3-0 win away at second bottom East Preston. Despite the seemingly convincing score line, a disjointed YM made hard work of things for large parts of a fragmented affair. Nick Sullivan netted twice before the break and Dave Brown headed home a third ten minutes from the end, before
visitors’ goalkeeper Mark Fox saved a late Alex Wilson penalty to preserve a clean sheet and aid Peter Buckland’s side in maintaining their unbeaten start to 2016. The YM manager commented: “We made hard work of it today. It was a scrappy performance but I knew down here, in the conditions and at this time of year, that it was more about the three points than the display. It wasn’t pretty. I feel sorry for anyone that paid £6 to get in and watch this afternoon, but I don’t think that the result was in doubt. We had one or two close shaves, but we could also have easily been 3-0 up inside the first five minutes if we’d had a bit more composure. That would have taken the pressure off for
the rest of the game, because at 2-0 the result can still be in the balance. When the third goal went in I was mightily relieved. We haven’t played a lot of football recently and you could really see that. I’ve said it time and time again, but we need continuity. When we play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday we are a much better side. When all is said and done, we had to grind out a result today. East Preston were very tenacious. It was more about getting three points on the board than the performance.” Horsham YMCA: Fox, Carden, Crane, Burgess, Evans, Dugdale, Hibbert (Donaldson 72), Gedling, Brown, Wright (Johnson 63), N. Sullivan (Schaaf 63) Unused subs: Gathern, D. Sullivan.

Tuesday February 9 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 – 2 Broadbridge Heath In a highly charged match, that contained some controversial decisions from the officials, Horsham failed to hold onto a two goal half time lead, missing out on heading the league table in the process. After a ten day period without playing Horsham did not match their slick flowing style of recent months and in the end, given the controversy, an away point at a local rival is not a disaster. The Hornets could not have got off to a better start as within three minutes they were ahead when Loxwood ‘keeper Harrison Hilfiker totally misjudged a harmless looking Mark Knee cross allowing the ball to drop into the net. Horsham ‘keeper Gareth Williams was kept on his toes by two decent efforts from firstly Michael Wood’s header and then Matt Simpson’s deflected shot. If Horsham’s first goal was a bit of Tuesday February 9 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 – 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA again failed to get the better of local rivals Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday evening, as they were twice forced to come from behind to draw 2-2 in Premier Division action at Gorings Mead. Visitors’ midfielder Stuart Chester bundled home from close range to break the deadlock after just eight minutes, but YM responded quickly and levelled when Dan Sullivan tapped in a wayward Sam Schaaf strike at the far post midway through the first period. Heath striker Tiago Andrade netted his fourth goal in as many games against YM to restore the away side’s lead shortly before the break, but their advantage was short lived as five minutes after the restart Nick Sullivan coolly converted a low Dan Evans cross at the near post to make it 2-2 and ultimately share the spoils. Since their return to the top flight two seasons ago, the Bears have taken eight out of a possible twelve points from the sides’ four league meetings, leaving YM manager Peter Buckland still searching for that elusive first win over his opposite number Steve Painter. The YM boss commented: “Broadbridge Heath are a good side and they are always up for coming down
Darren Boswell scores Horsham's second a fluke then the second was sheer class. With nineteen minutes gone wide man Darren Boswell collected a clearance at pace and made his way towards the home goal before beating a couple of defenders and then cutting in to fire in from a tight angle. At the other end Olly Moore should have tested Williams but shot weakly wide and Cecil Jee had a goal bound effort blocked by Charlie Farmer. Just before the half time whistle Evan Archibald nearly made it 3-0 but his header was turned
away for a corner. As Horsham had done to them at the start of the first half, Loxwood scored at the start of the second. With three minutes of the restart gone ‘keeper Williams failed to hold a Loxwood free kick and Olly Moore was first to pounce to pull a goal back. The first of referee Carl Smith’s controversial decisions was to follow when the already booked Cecil Jee took out Adam Hunt with a horrendous challenge only for the referee to give him a ticking off instead of a red card; much to the disgust of the Hor-
Loxwood defending from a Horsham corner sham players, bench and support. With eleven players still on the pitch – Jee was substituted immediately after the incident – Loxwood then drew level. The usually reliable Williams again failed to collect the ball, this time from a corner, and the ball was stabbed into the net by Charlie Pitcher. With fifteen minutes remaining both sides went for it, Harry Smith for Horsham and Pitcher for Loxwood both going close. Referee Smith was then again involved in game changing decisions when Archibald had a goal disallowed
for offside and Loxwood were denied a penalty when Pitcher went down in the box following a challenge by Williams and Ash Jones. Then there were loud appeals for a goal when a Horsham effort appeared to cross the line, but again the referee thought differently. Horsham now go to third placed Lancing tomorrow (Saturday February 13) in what is a decisive match at the top of the table. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Hunt, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Lewis, Archibald, Pamment, Boswell.

Stuart Chester putting Heath 1-0 up here and doing well. I beg to wonder what they might achieve if they put as much effort in every game as they do when they play YM. It wasn’t a bad game. At half time I would have said that a draw at the end of the game would probably have been about right, but I think in the second half we really went for it and dominated. I thought the game was going to turn when we got the early goal in the second half. We kept our shape and our discipline and I thought that there were some commendable performances out there from our guys. I think it was destined to end up as a draw and I’m reasonably pleased
with the point. We probably needed all three points, but we won’t know until the last game of the season how valuable that point may prove to be or how invaluable not getting the three points was.” YM Team: Fox, Carden, Burgess, Crane, Evans, Hibbert, Dugdale, Gedling, D. Three first half goals from Broadbridge Heath secured the points against a spirited Hailsham team in an open match with good chances at both ends. In an even start to the game both sides had opportunities to score before Jake Holmes latched on to a Hailsham defensive error and finished with a low shot inside the far post. Heath’s lead was extended by Scott Weller after a lovely through ball by Tom Lyons; Weller calmly rounded the goalkeeper before sliding the ball into an empty net as a defender tried to get back. Hailsham always looked dangerous and had their best spell of the half but found Heath ‘keeper Michael Chester in outstanding form. Instead of getting themselves back in the game Hailsham conceded a third two minutes from half time when after good work by Piers McDermott, Scott Weller floated an excellent left wing cross to the far post where Jake Holmes finished superbly with a right foot volley. On the balance of play the 3-0 half time
lead flattered Heath but their quality finishing made the difference. The second half was much quieter with Heath not really pushing on and Hailsham deservedly pulling a goal back after another outstanding save from Chester was finally poked over the line. In the dying minutes Hol-
