Tax rise goes ahead despite £6.2 million boost 19.02.2016 Contents News

A 3.95 per cent increase in West Sussex council tax will not be lowered by an extra £6.2 million pledged to the county from the Government. The Tory-led Government pledged extra money after the Tory-run county council protested at the severity of funding cuts that will add about £50 in total on average to council tax bills in the Horsham district. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, welcomed the additional funding but said the strain on services remained and the

tax rise would go forward. Cllr Goldsmith said: “We lobbied Government and they have listened to us and we are pleased as this money goes some way to help us better manage the funding reductions this year and next. But this is only temporary relief and big savings still need to be made and they won’t go away because of this extra money. “In 2016/17 we are facing a shortfall of £44.2 million and will still need to make £18.6 million of savings in addition to the £162 million

of savings we have already made since 2010. We are also faced with growing demands for our services and ever shrinking resources. “So we continue on a cautious and responsible approach to take forward our proposed 3.95 per cent increase to council tax to full council on February 19. This will enable us to continue to protect critical frontline services that are so important to those in need.” A Horsham district council tax rise of 1.2 per cent is up for approval by

full council on February 24. That would mean residents in Horsham district paying a combined total of about £47 a year extra for district and county taxes, made up of an average county increase of £45.90 and a district increases of £1.63 on average. On top of that there will be average increase of £2.79 a year, 1.98 per cent, in Sussex Police tax, known as precept, and any parish or town council precept depending where you live.

There was a serious purpose to a concert by young musicians. The Steyning Grammar School Year 11 A Level Music students were performing to family and friends as part of their Music Practitioners exam. This year a group called the ‘Foreigners’ featuring Maria Perez, Emrick Seymour, Aiyanna SkaddingHunt and Bethany Clark started the evening’s entertainment with some gentle numbers, finishing with a moving rendition of ‘Grand Piano’. Students Becky Rogers, Daisy Fitton, Toby Shotter, Callum Davies, Grace Hart Coombes and Charlotte Bibby performed as part of the group ‘The Rubics’ playing some big numbers like ‘Latch’ by artist Sam Smith, ‘Can’t help falling in love’ an Elvis Presley hit and ‘Wildest Dreams’ by Taylor Swift. Olivia Gillam and Chloe Kimber sang some beautiful songs; ‘Emilou’, ‘Lunar’, ‘Flume’ and ‘Homesick’. Ben Waring on lead vocals with fellow students Shannon Dixon, Archie Lees, Daniel Everett and Cameron

Murphie performed ‘Annie’, ‘Crazy Little thing called love’ and some hits from recent films ‘Let it go’ from Frozen and ‘Skyfall’ from the latest James Bond movie. The evening closed with Emily Hickox, Harriet Long, Cameron Parr, Anthony Anderson and Jack Pullen performing a rocky number ‘How you remind me’, ‘Bloodstream’ an Ed Sheeran number and finished with a funky performance of blues inspired song ‘Black horse and cherry tree’. Jon Reeves, Steyning Grammar School, Learning Leader for music said: “For the first time the audience was able to share observations electronically with the students about their performances. This has given students lots to digest. “ This event coincided with the Henfield Youth Charity Concert where fifteen Steyning Grammar School students from Year 11 and the Sixth Form performed seven acts and raised £750 in support of one of the eight refugee families who have recently arrived in West Sussex. Pictured are musicians in action.

A youngster shocked by attacks on young women wants to see self defence taught in schools. Juliet Knapton, 15, who attends Millais School, Horsham, hopes eventually to see classes in all secondary schools. Some schools do stage occasional lessons but Juliet wants them to be a regular feature. But she insists lessons would teach non-violence and would intended for purely defensive purposes. Juliet, from Lower Beeding, who stressed the views were her own and not that of her school, said: “I want to advocate our campaign to all secondary schools but as I am attending an all girls school it felt more relevant to start with girls. “My idea for this campaign was from watching the news about a horrific attack on a young girl which strongly affected me. “Therefore I looked into the likelihood of being attacked or a victim of physical abuse. I was shocked by the statistics as at least 35% of women worldwide will be affected, meaning 525 girls at Millais School could potentially be victims and I want to try and stop this. “If I could get this campaign established I would like it to roll out to

all secondary schools and my recommendation is that it is included as part of the timetable.” There have been attacks in Horsham Park in the past that have been investigated by Sussex Police. Juliet said: “Although Horsham is a very safe place to live, self-defence lessons will be a way of preparing us for our future. “The plan would be that the lessons would include an educational element of self awareness and avoidance of dangers, as well as the selfdefence component. I would stress that the purpose of the lessons would be entirely defensive, as I hate violence of any kind. “Another positive aspect would be improving fitness as it would encourage all teenagers to be involved who may not normally be actively participating in sport.” Farlington School, Horsham, recently staged a self defence session. Sara Whittaker, director of PE and Games at Farlington, said: “These lessons are practical and important for the girls. It is all part of our wider aim to build the girls’ confidence whether it is on the hockey pitch or learning something, which hopefully they may never have to use, such as how to defend oneself.”

Jail sentences for train fraudsters Confiscated cash used to help out life savers

The presentation of the money

Martins and Phillips captured on CCTV footage that was used as part of the case

Phil Dennett News Editor

Two rail passengers from Pulborough who falsely claimed delay compensation for trips they did not take have been given jail sentences. They will also have to do community work and repay a combined total of more than £6,000 to Southern Railways. Steven Martins, 49, and Nicole Phillips, 42, researched delayed trains online then submitted claims for delays, despite never travelling on the services. Both pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation after an investigation found fraudulent claims totalling thousands of pounds. Martins was given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, ordered to pay Southern Rail compensation of £3,500 and will have to undertake 180 hours unpaid work. Phillips was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for 12 months. She was ordered to repay £2,600 and was also given 120 hours unpaid work. Both were also ordered to pay £85 costs. PC Michael Stephenson of British Transport Police said: “This was a carefully-organised and deliberate scam designed to defraud thousands of pounds from the railway industry. Phillips and Martins researched services that qualified for delay compensation on the internet. “They managed to arouse suspicion after submitting an unusually large number of claims. CCTV was produced that clearly showed they had already made their journeys into London for work and hadn’t been anywhere near the delayed services at the time. “This was an operation designed to defraud the railway of thousands of pounds set aside for passengers who

have been genuinely inconvenienced by delays and disruption. Ultimately it is the travelling public who lose out through increases in fares to cover the cost of bogus claims like these. “We hope this sends a clear message to anyone thinking of abusing the claims system in future.” Stella Morris, Head of Security and Revenue Protection Strategy for Southern Railway, said: "We welcome genuine claims for delays to

journeys of 30 minutes or more. However, this case demonstrates that if you abuse a scheme to compensate rail passengers who are delayed, it will be treated as serious fraud and prosecuted. “Govia Thameslink Railway worked hard with British Transport Police to uncover this fraud and will continue to highlight to them those cases where we believe that fraudulent claims are being made."

Money from property confiscated from thieves by courts and then sold is put into what is known as the Police Property Act Fund for community use. The Storrington Area Response Team is the latest to benefit from a donation by Sussex Police from the fund. It will be used to help the volunteer group buy new equipment. Police Community Support Officer Carol Boniface presented a cheque from the fund for £500. The response team is a group of

volunteers who are trained to deliver life saving treatment and can be alerted to go to the scene when a 999 call is received by the ambulance service, along with an ambulance crew. The team’s leader Nikki Turner said: "I'd like to thank Sussex Police for their contribution. We hope to put the money towards buying a new defibrillator." Young chef equal to professionals say judges after cruising to the finals

Young chef Phoebe Reeves

Young chef Phoebe Reeves is heading for a London final because of her talent. Phoebe, 14, from Tanbridge House School, Horsham, was a winner in a field of eight at the London Regional Final of Springboard’s Future Chef 2016 Competition at Lambeth College. Her big moment will come on March 14 in the National Final at Westminster Kingsway College in London. Phoebe said: “I was apprehensive before the event, but increased in confidence as I went along. I feel very proud to have got through to the national final and I’m very excited, if a bit nervous.” In recent months these dedicated young chefs have already outshone

Spitfire the highlight for big show A showcase for the countryside staged at one of the district’s most historic houses is celebrating its silver jubilee this year with a Spitfire display. The Sussex Country Show will be held in the grounds of Parham Park at the hamlet of Cootham, near Storrington, on June 18 and 19. To mark the 25th anniversary organisers are arranging two aerial Spitfire demonstrations. Run by Derbyshire-based Countryman Fairs, the two-day event attracts almost 30,000 visitors each year. The first show was held in 1992 and this is the 13th year in a row it has been held at Parham Park, an Elizabethan House in

Cootham that dates to 1540. Chief Executive Officer Ian Harford commented: “Every summer British families are spoilt for choice when it comes to keeping the kids entertained. There are hundreds of country shows on offer each weekend. However, the quality of Sussex Country Show’s attractions and itinerary speaks for itself – the event has stood the test of time and goes from strength to strength each year as more and more people visit.” Attractions at the family-orientated show include gundog handling, clay shooting, archery, fishing, falconry and ferreting. There are more than 200 exhibi-

tion stands, picnic areas, a Main Arena schedule, children's entertainment, food festival, craft and antiques fairs and live music. The best value ticket is an advance two-day adult pass, which costs £24. Full price tickets at £15 will be available at the entrance each day of the show. Accompanied children aged 15 and under can attend the show free of charge. For more information, visit www.sussexcountryshow.co.uk.

more than 450 of their peers in earlier rounds. At the regional final they showcased their cooking, budgeting and time management skills. Phoebe’ winning menu was rump of lamb with red wine and thyme jus and parsnip puree and heritage carrots, followed by a desert of ‘deconstructed’ apple crumble served with a raspberry sorbet. Springboard’s FutureChef is a nationwide culinary initiative in more than 550 schools. Its main goal is to assist young people aged 12-16 to learn the vital life skills of cooking and understanding nutrition, as well as providing invaluable insight into and inspiration for building a career within the hospitality industry.

The talented hopefuls had already succeeded in two previous rounds of competition as they cooked for a place in this year’s final at Lambeth. Judges David Girard of the Dorchester Collection, Phil Dyer and Daniel Rampart of Gather and Gather, and Mikhail Lumanov of Lambeth College, all commented that Phoebe impressed with her complete focus and highly organised, calm approach to working in such a pressured environment. At the same time, she displayed a real understanding of the techniques required to produce great food. The judges said: “We’ve worked with professionals who would have been delighted to have produced the results Phoebe did and she really stood out today.”

New film for blockbuster writer Matt

A

film script writer from Dragons Green who turned a book footnote into a blockbuster film is awaiting a start on a new film after narrowly missing out on a BAFTA award. Matt Charman, who was raised at the West Sussex hamlet near Billingshurst and went to Forest Boys School in Horsham, had been nominated for best original screen play for Bridge of Spies but was pipped at the post in last weekend’s awards. It was his first original film script. He told BBC Radio 4 of his latest venture: “I have written a movie

about the Boston Marathon bombings a few years ago, which is another true story, and I have spent a lot of time in Boston researching that. “It shoots in April and it’s called Patriot’s Day.” Matt, who now lives in London, said of the awards ceremony: “I am delighted to

have been nominated. And to be sitting where we were amongst all the action was amazing.” He said of the origins of the smash hit Bridge of Spies, which has also been nominated for best original script in the Oscars: “I found it as a footnote in a book and grew it through research and New York Times archives and all that stuff.” Bridge of Spies won a BAFTA for Mark Rylance for best supporting actor.

End of expensive Prom dress nightmare Parents can buy or sell second-hand Proms dresses in a fund-raiser for a Horsham school. After the success of its Everything Prom Fashion shows, the Parent Teacher Association of Millais School is launching an opportunity to buy and sell Prom dresses and accessories on March 12 to meet what it says is a growing need for alternatives to full price items. Ruth Dean of the Association explains: ‘As parents ourselves we have become aware of the considerable cost of Prom dresses and their accessories and we wanted to offer the girls and their parents the opportunity to shop for a ‘pre-loved’ prom dress or accessories in a convenient way. “We see many dresses advertised online or in the classified section

LIGHTING UP YOUR DAY

of newspapers but this doesn’t allow the buyer to easily see or feel the dress and compare it to anything else. “We are encouraging previous students and other Horsham residents to bring their own Prom dress along for the day and allow us to sell it on their behalf.’ The Preloved Prom Sale will enable potential buyers to view and try the dresses and purchase it that day. If a dress is sold the seller will receive the majority of the sale price with a donation of 15% going to towards the fundraising for Millais PTA. Ruth said: ‘”We hope that this will not only help some of the current students purchase their prom essentials at a more affordable price but also to give those interested in selling

their dresses and accessories access to a captive audience.” The sale itself will be held at the school from 12.30 – 3pm. Anyone interested in selling their Prom dress should contact Millais PTA for a sellers pack on 07780 676879 or emailprelovedproms a l e s @ gmail. com

Staff turn challenge into opportunity Staff who found a good use for unwanted office equipment instead of dumping it are shortlisted for an award. The workers at Horsham District Council avoided sending it to landfill and instead managed to sell a lot of it, with help from local charities. The disposal headache came when the council moved from its old premises to a new shared office space with West Sussex County Council in 2104. The project succeeded in disposing of a large amount of unwanted office contents without it having to go to landfill, greatly minimising the cost of disposal of the items. The council says that benefits were also delivered to the local community and voluntary sectors. Local charity Horsham Matters and

not-for-profit organisation Educare Recycle UK, were engaged in the sale, carriage and delivery of equipment with any profits made being shared. Many local not for profit organisations also benefitted from free furniture and surplus stationery. As a result the district council’s Commissioning and Performance and Sustainability teams have been shortlisted as finalists in the National Government Opportunities Excellence in Public Procurement Awards 2016/17. The Horsham based teams have been nominated in the category of Sustainability/Corporate Social Responsibility for their innovative commissioning approach to disposal. District council leader Ray Dawe

said: “I am delighted that our Commissioning and Procurement and Sustainability teams have been shortlisted for such a prestigious national award. “The disposal of the contents of our old buildings presented us with both a challenge and an opportunity. “Horsham District Council is one of the first authorities in the UK to have adopted this innovative approach to disposal which maximised income at the same time as creating a sustainable solution which benefitted the local economy and environment. Our thanks go to our voluntary sector partners who were instrumental in helping us achieve this project.” The awards ceremony will take place at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester on March 8.

A flippin’ frosty fiesta of fun at Hors Another brilliant year of intense rivalry and fun in glorious sunshine marked the 8th Horsham Pancake Races on Tuesday, once again providing a superb opening to the town’s annual event calendar. A baker’s dozen of crazy mascots created mayhem led by Horsham FC’s Howie the Hornet who succeeded in winning the mascots race by defeating such magnificent creatures as Nando’s Chicken and Horsham Council’s Ringo the Dragon in the process. In addition,twenty-four teams of excited, gaudily dressed racers sped their way across the Carfax race track. The event was organised as usual by the Horsham Rotary Club, with support from main sponsor Ringway, who supplied the arena barriers and signs, Sainsbury’s, who supplied the pancakes, sugar and lemon juice, compere TV’s Dave Benson Phillips with musical support from Andrew Lake and the HDC Event Team. Thirteen giant mascots competed in the hotly contested Egg & Spoon Races, with Barney the Bear just pipping Alice in a rerun final to win the Ringway Mascot Cup. Runners get new 10k race Parham House to appear on TV

Fans of 10 kilometre runs will have an extra challenge at this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon charity fund-raiser. A new 10 kilometre run, about six miles, is being added to the usual half marathon run of just over 13 miles. Organisers say they hope the addition of the shorter distance will bring in more runners. Both races will be on September 25, with the Half Marathon starting at 10am and the 10km race at 10.20am. The new 10km race will start at the same place as the Half Marathon and the finish will be beside the Green in Sandhill Road. The 10km race which will be open to anyone over the age of 16 and like the Half Marathon will take place on closed roads and will follow part of the Half Marathon route. There will be an additional section of the 10km route that will take place in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. There will be the usual medals and prizes for the 10km race and the entrance fee will be £15 for affili-

ated runners and £17 for unaffiliated. Race director Vernon Jennings said: “This has been a very big decision for the Barns Green Half Marathon committee and one that required a lot of research and discussion. “There are now many more races taking place around the country each year and it is getting increasingly hard to attract new runners to our event. What our research showed was that there are a lot of runners looking to take part in well organised official races such as ours but who don’t want to take on the 13-mile challenge and test of a Half Marathon. “For many runners 10km is a much more appealing and achievable distance. Overall our objective is to maintain the entry levels and traditional high standards of our Half Marathon while establishing a totally new race”. Last year’s event raised more than £10,000 for local charities. Visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website barnsgreen-half.org.uk for details.

Television fans can see the beautiful Parham House and Gardens near Storrington feature in a new television programme. Alan Titchmarsh hosts the programme Masterpiece which is currently being shown at 3pm on Mondays on ITV. Parham is home to rare and precious collections of paintings, furniture, needlework and antiquities, and hosts six episodes of eager contestants who go head to head in a battle of the collectibles. But will their love of antiques be enough to take home the cash prize? The brand new series, which was the brainchild of Alan himself, sees teams comprised of antique and history fans go head to head in a series of challenges. From valuing antiques to deciphering the age of a collectible, the contestants must use their amateur antique skills to secure their position in the ‘Masterpiece Gallery’. Once they enter the ‘Masterpiece Gallery’, each team must work out which of the three objects on display is the true ‘Masterpiece’, an item so exquisite or rare that it is worth £10,000 or more and add it to their collection. The team that has successfully collected the most ‘Masterpieces’ wins a one thousand pound prize. Host Alan said: “This is the first time I have come up with an idea for a game show so I’m really chuffed and excited. It plays to everyone's curiosity as to the value of all kinds

Alan Titchmarsh on location of collectibles and beautiful things, from classic cars to film memorabilia, posters and toys to works of art and antiques. And the series is filmed in some of our finest stately homes, so the scenery is pretty handsome, too. It's been great fun to make and I think it's fun to watch as well, with the viewers playing along to see if they can spot the Masterpieces, which are not always as obvious as

they might seem.” Parham House and Gardens is open from March 27 –September 30 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. Masterpiece With Alan Titchmarsh is a Spun Gold TV production for ITV. Nick Bullen and Matt Young are the Executive Producers on Masterpiece With Alan Titchmarsh and Sue Allison is the Series Producer.

Sleeping rough for charity Musical youngsters are ready to rock

People are being invited to sleep out for a night in Horsham to help the town’s disadvantaged youngsters. The “Sleep Easy “ will be held on March 18 at Gorings Mead football ground and is organised by the YMCA DownsLink Group. The charity says the aim of the Sleep Easy event is simple; give up your warm bed for one night and help young homeless people get back on their feet. It promises it will not be warm or comfortable but says the Sleep Easy Sleepouts have raised thousands of pounds for YMCAs nationally and this is an opportunity to do something remarkable for the community. The charity said that although Horsham is a prosperous place there are many local young people who, for a range of reasons, find themselves with nowhere to call home.

Last year YMCA DownsLink Group housed over 550 young people who would otherwise have been homeless. The charity works hard to help these young people rebuild their lives, but funding is a constant challenge. The Sleep Easy event can raise significant funds to help. Pete Brayne, a Sleep Easy veteran said: “A single night outside cannot compare with being homeless, but lying awake under the stars at 2am is surprisingly impactful. If you have never done this before I strongly recommend giving it a go. You only live once and you will help raise thousands of pounds in support of the YMCA’s fantastic work with homeless young people.” People can find out more and sign up to take part by visiting www.ymcadlg. org/sleep-easy-2016 and completing the entry form.

Musicians from three Horsham schools will be taking part in the 2016 Rock Challenge tour next month. Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, Millais School and Tanbridge House School will compete in a field of 16 East and West Sussex schools over two nights at The Hawth in Crawley. Queen Elizabeth and Millais perform on March 3 and Tanbridge play on the next night. More than 1000 musicians will take part, taking the opportunity to perform live on a professional stage whilst encouraging an adrenalin-based high that can be experienced through performing rather than using tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. Teams as small as 20, or as large as 135 students, will have up to eight minutes to perform their chosen theme to an audience of family, friends, VIPs, sponsors and a panel of industry professionals. Every aspect of the performance will have been devised, designed and created by the students and we will see a variety of themes from the tackling of current social issues to the retelling of real-life events or fictional pieces. Senior event manager Samantha Eastwood said: “Every year we are amazed by the amount of time and effort that schools put into creating their Rock Challenge and J Rock performances. “Schools learn the importance of team work and perseverance as their many hours or hard work pay off in spectacular performances. “This experience is the highlight of so many young people’s school careers

and creates lasting memories for years to come.” Involving more than 330 schools across the country this year’s UK Rock Challenge® and J Rock™ tour run by the Be Your Best Foundation is expected to reach 20,000 young people between the ages of seven and 18 and about 40,000 audience members. Dog warning during lambing season Local students debate EU Dog owners have been asked to take great care to keep their pets under control as the lambing season approaches. Each year there are reports of attacks on sheep, which are painful and sometimes fatal for sheep and distressing for sheep farmers. An RSPCA spokeswoman said: “With the traditional lambing season approaching and reports of dog attacks on sheep increasing, the National Sheep Association and RSPCA have teamed up to urge dog owners to take extra care.” One Sussex sheep owner spoke of her experiences in an attempt to persuade people to take extra caution. She said: “Our first dog attack was in mid-December, during the night. A dog got into a field of inlamb ewes, which resulted in six being killed at the time. It was the aftermath which really impacted us though, our scanning percentage was down 20% on the previous year to only 160%” “We suffered our second attack in January this year, a dog got into a field of ewe lambs and one was pinned down and attacked. Again it was the aftermath which caused the real damage, after we discovered that only 40 out of 100 were actually in-lamb. I really don’t think people understand the impact a dog can have by simply chasing ewes in a field. The damage might not be physically on

Mr Rudd pictured with students

Attacks can ruin lambing show straight away, but the longterm impacts, such as ewes aborting or not getting in lamb at all is made clear with the experiences we’ve had. “I did report both cases to the police, but no action was taken against

the dog owner as the police maintained there was a lack of physical evidence. I think it's so important to try and educate people to the damage they might not realise there dog in capable of inflicting.”

Students were on both sides of the debate when a key supporter of Britain staying in Europe visited them. Roland Rudd, the treasurer of the ‘Britain Stronger in Europe’ campaign told senior students at Christ’s Hospital school at Horsham about the benefits of our European Union membership. His speech came soon after the Prime Minister released the draft deal of his renegotiation of Britain’s European Union membership. The focus of Mr Rudd’s speech was much more on the factual elements of our European Union membership, but he also spoke about many of the advantages of membership. In a raised hand count there was a majority of students present for remaining in the European Union. But afterwards it was clear not everyone agreed with Mr Rudd. They included Roberto Salvia, who wishes Britain to leave the European

Union. He said: “Although Mr Rudd did bring to light the few advantages of Britain remaining in the EU, and did so rather well, I might add, no part of me could ever support our country giving up control over its laws to undemocratic bureaucrats who have no respect for the will and hopes of the people that they claim to represent.” On the other side “stay in” supporter Will Goddard said: “Mr Rudd expressed the case for remaining in the European Union incredibly well for the most part. Only through engaging voters and informing them of the issues at stake in this upcoming referendum will we be able to win and ensure Britain can remain secure at the heart of European and world affairs for the future.” The school said that overall the talk highlighted an incredibly important issue for Britain and succeeded in engaging the pupils.

New police pup on patrol Steven tells pupils story of survival Harper the newest police puppy, might look cute at 12 weeks old but in about a year she will be on the beat in West Sussex. Harper has been introduced as a general purpose dog, designed to track, chase and detain suspects, search for stolen property and missing people, and assist public order units with crowd control. Police dogs and their handlers play a vitally important role in safeguarding the whole of Surrey and Sussex. Together with her crime fighting colleagues, Harper will be used to catch even the most cunning criminals in both counties. Kennel master Emma Coles said: "Harper is still very young and she's certainly keeping her foster family on their toes. But all going to plan, she will be issued to a handler in December, before going on a full training course in January. "General purpose dogs are invaluable in the way officers work to fight crime. They are part of a team, and they support their handlers as much as their handlers support them. Without a police dog, offic-

ers may not be able to find a missing person or track down a wanted criminal." Harper was among a litter of four puppies, all of which will go through the same process as her in a bid to become general purpose police dogs. The task of naming Harper was given to a group of school children who were fortunate enough to be visited by her and Emma Coles. Kerri Martin, of City of London Freemen's School in Ashtead Park, Surrey, explained: "We were looking through Twitter and noticed that one of the police dogs was having puppies, so we asked if we could see one. Much to our surprise, we not only had a visit from Harper, but we were also invited to name her. Harper's three siblings have also been officially named. Hero-Diesel was named after the police dog that lost its life in the Paris terrorist attacks, Hope was named by Surrey Police internally and Hector was named by a woman who offered to provide a substantial donation to charity to name the puppy after her husband.

Young history students were moved by the story of a man who survived a concentration camp when they attended an Amnesty International “workshop”. Steven Frank recounted his childhood wartime experiences under the Nazis in the Netherlands, how his father was tortured and gassed at only 39 at Auschwitz and how he was incarcerated and sent to Terezín, or Theresienstadt, concentration camp. He was only five when the Nazis invaded Holland in 1940, and was a victim of the regime’s persecution of Jews. His mother saved his life and that of his two brothers in the hunger and disease –ridden camp by mixing extra scraps with hot water and all four were freed at the end of the war and later moved to England. The children were among only 93 survivors from 15,000 children at the camp. The students from Farlington School, Horsham, said they found it very humbling and moving to hear his first-hand account. Student Alex Godmon said: “Steven recounted his experience and background on behalf of all the other survivors who can't, as those memories bring back too much grief and suffering to them. He retold every detail as if it were happening at that moment, and his life in Terezín concentration camp was emotionally moving to everyone. It was a memorable afternoon that everyone should have the opportunity to go to.” During the workshop at Chichester Cathedral the girls discussed Human

Steven and family in 1937 Rights and the Declaration of Human Rights with students from other schools in the region. The girls learnt a great deal about our expected rights and charted some of the areas of the world where those rights are being denied. The school’s head of history Daniel

Cronin said: “It was a valuable experience and the girls gained a greater understanding of Amnesty International and its work safeguarding Human Rights throughout the world.” Steven’s full story can be read at http://hmd.org.uk/education/casestudy-steven-frank

Business

The Anchor’s away in Horsham’s East Street Business News Martin Read – Business Reporter Something unusual happened in Horsham last week: bucking the national trend a new pub opened – the Anchor Tap, in East Street, arresting a long list of pub closures in the district. First a licensed house as part of Market Square’s Anchor Hotel at the end of the 1890s, the Tap became The Anchor for local brewers, King and Barnes, before conversion into a soft drinks bar and youth information centre and subsequently a café. The new venture is a major part of the development programme of the Dark Star Brewery at Partridge Green, who also run the Partridge pub there in addition to Brighton’s Evening Star. The opening of the Anchor Tap was welcomed in with a quarter peal at St Mary’s Parish Church by Horsham and Warnham Bell-

ringers, Mike Cattell telling the District Post: “We wanted to celebrate this joyous occasion – when King and Barnes closed some years ago we rang half-muffled, indicating that we were bitterly disappointed!” With 16 beers, cask and keg, from Dark Star and beyond, an extensive wine and spirits list and delicious sea food, the cosy Anchor Tap was certainly going like the clappers, delighted customer Laurie Hockley saying: “It’s fantastic to see an independent brewery come back in to Horsham confirming that there is a real passion for local beer!” James Cutherbertson of Dark Star added: “We want to create a venue for locals - a great place to go to have a drink and a bite to eat, locally owned and operated and using locally produced products. Our next venture will be to refurbish and open the Lockhart Tavern at Haywards Heath.”

Locals celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th year with a trip on the Cathedrals Express This spring, locals will be able to commemorate HM Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th year, when The Cathedrals Express steam train sets out from Horsham. On Thursday, May 5, steam locomotive 6201 Princess Elizabeth, which was named after the young Princess in 1933, will be at the head of the train as it makes its way to Gloucester for a great day trip. ‘Lizzie’, as she is affectionately known, will depart from Horsham at 08:30 and head into London, before making her way north-west, through the rolling hills of The Cotswolds and on to Gloucester. There will be nearly three hours to explore this fabulous city, home to one of the country’s finest medieval cathedrals, made famous in recent years as a setting for the Harry Potter films. In the restored 200-year old historic docks, there are two museums, an antiques market and bustling shopping centre. For fans of Beatrix Potter, there is also a Beatrix Potter Museum and shop. Chairman of Steam Dreams, Marcus Robertson, commented: “We are honoured to be starting our 2016 programme with a series of celebratory trips, using this prestigious and elegant locomotive. Given the very special connection The Queen has to this engine, it seems a very fitting way to mark her 90th Birthday. “Gloucester is a wonderful city to visit and to be able to arrive here, with ‘Lizzie’ at the helm, will be a memorable experience for those onboard.” The trip to Gloucester is part of a series of special celebratory excursions with ‘Lizzie’, to various destinations across the country (see full

itinerary below), as the nation celebrates The Queen’s 90th birthday on 21st April. The locomotive returns to the tracks this spring, following a major three year refurbishment. She last visited Gloucester in July 2012, hauling the Royal Train with Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip on board, as part of the Royal Jubilee Tour.

Tickets for The Cathedrals Express trip to Gloucester on May 5 with Princess Elizabeth are available in four classes, ranging from £109 per person in Premium Standard through to the top class of Pullman Style Dining of £249 per person. Passengers travelling in Pullman Style will enjoy a two course champagne brunch on the outward jour-

ney and a five course dinner on the return, whilst those opting for Premium Standard will be seated at tables of four in open carriages and served with complimentary tea and coffee at their seats. Anyone interested in going on The Cathedrals Express should call the booking office on 01483 209888 or visit www.CathedralsExpress.co.uk.

Escape to the country with Hamptons

Latest research from leading estate agent, Hamptons International, reveals that in the last 12 months, 63,000 Londoners made the decision to buy homes outside of the capital. This represents the largest number of Londoners leaving the capital for eight years. To meet this demand, Hamptons International will be host-

ing a high profile Roadshow in the capital on Saturday, March 12, between 11am and 3pm. The Roadshow will take place simultaneously in the company’s Blackheath, Battersea, Earlsfield, Chiswick and Muswell Hill branches. The Hamptons International Roadshow will provide those living in London with invaluable in-

sight into the places to move outside of the capital and showcase an array of properties available to buy or let in areas of the commuter belt and countryside. The hosting London branches will have property experts from various country locations on hand to offer a comprehensive view of the area as well as providing key information on the top performing schools, commuter times and property values. Marc Goldberg, Head of the Sales at Hamptons International, said: “As the gap between prices in London and the South has grown, so has the temptation for Londoners to cash in on record house prices and move out. Last year, Londoners spent a total of £24 billion on homes outside of London, up from £14 billion in

2014. “Interestingly last year also saw 11,000 more first-time buyers choose to buy their first home outside of the capital, 70 per cent more than in 2014, showing it is not just families looking to leave for more space and better value. “With the expectation of more Londoners looking to leave the capital in 2016 the Roadshow has been designed to provide our clients and potential customers with a one stop shop with marketleading insight into where to buy outside of the capital.” If you would like your property to be included in the Roadshow, or if you’re looking to sell your property in London and move to the country, please contact your local Hamptons International branch on 01403 211 766.

Title-chasing Sevenoaks Hawks close in on Sussex League title too strong for Horsham U13 Horsham Hawks 90 - 55 U13 Haywards Heath Eagles Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor With just two fixtures remaining of the season, a convincing victory over second placed Haywards Heath Eagles has given the unbeaten Horsham Hawks league title ambitions a huge boost Eagles opened the scoring first before a 21-6 Hawks response put the hosts in front. Haywards Heath responded with a 9-2 run of their own late in the period before two free throws from Lea-Clayton made it 2515 to the Hawks after one quarter. The Eagles began the second quarter well and narrowed the Horsham advantage to 34-27 with four minutes remaining in the half. The Hawks responded and outscored the visitors 13-2, courtesy of Josh Tavolieri and Fin Bennett, to go into the

The U13 Hawks edge closer to league success half time break 49-31 up. The third quarter was a much tighter affair as the Eagles battled back into the game outscoring the Hawks 12-10, reducing the deficit to 59-43 with ten minutes remaining. An explosive 14-2 Hawks run opened the final period with LeaClayton and Tavolieri adding to their totals while Antonio Lozzi buried a long range three point shot. A mas-

sive 31-12 final quarter from Horsham gave the Hawks a 90-55 victory and the chance to secure the Sussex League title next week away at the Haywards Heath Golden Eagles. On a very boggy pitch Tino Vaihu opened the scoring for the home side with a try and Will Thorpe added a second shortly after as Horsham battled to get out of their own 22. Horsham were facing a strong biting wind but that could not disguise some poor tackling that was again exploited when Matt Bates added a third try following a good dummy. Ollie Shirtcliff then put the game beyond Horsham before half time by scoring Sevenoaks’ fourth try, leaving Horsham trailing 26-0. Horsham played slightly better after the restart without ever looking threatening and any hopes of a miraculous comeback were dashed when

Rob Streather added to the Sevenoaks total with a try following a turnover. Horsham did grab a consolation when Mike Watts collected Tom Johnson’s kick before going over under the posts. Sevenoaks were not finished however and Streather added a fifth try following a run by fly-half Winter to complete the impressive and commanding victory by the Kent side. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said: “It was a bad day at the office. We started slowly conceding four tries in 25 minutes, and thereafter we were playing catch up rugby on a poor pitch against a good team. In the face of aggressive defence from Sevenoaks we didn’t get our patterns going to generate any go forward. In fairness their coach said this was one of their best performances of the season.” Horsham’s next fixture is at home tomorrow (February 20) to Ashford, who presently sit bottom of the table. Horsham Team: W Bell; Watts, J Johnson, Ordidge (Carvell), McCabe, T Johnson, Mills; Brady, Stone, Barber; Harcus, R Tredgett (capt) (Wilson); N Bell (Smith), Thompson, M Tredgett.

Last gasp joy for Pulborough Saturday February 13 – London 3 South East Uckfield 15 - 17 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter Pulborough, with a game in hand, moved up to sixth courtesy of a last minute try and conversion at struggling Uckfield. On their heavy pitch Uckfield came out blazing, posting 15 points in the first 20 minutes but were unable to score again. Boro did not open their account until the second half but kept pushing. Debutant Collyers student Owain McLoughlin scored Boro’s first try before Will Truscott

on a rare appearance got the second, but it was Frazer Oliphant-Hope who secured the win with his late try and, after hitting the post with previous kicks, crucial conversion. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “The ball was so heavy and depletion by a series of injuries meant that we had a number of players out of position and another debutant – Roland Dicks - but our excellent team spirit saw us through.” Tomorrow (Saturday February 20) Boro return home to host table toppers Heathfield and Waldron, Clayton commenting: “A tough game but we hope to be back to full strength and we’ve only been beaten once at home!”

3 Joggers took part in the local 10K with Mal Thornton finishing 9th in 40.01 followed by Nici Eyre 1.00.07 and James Thornton in 1.10.51.

Charlie Farmer heads into the net but his effort was disallowed Saturday February 13 - SCFL Premier Division Lancing 0 – 3 Horsham Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor With both teams having the same amount of points, occupying second and third places in the table and both among the favourites for the title this had all the makings of a tight evenly matched contest. In reality Horsham had the match won by half time with an excellent

performance that left Lancing playing damage limitation almost from the kick off. It took just three minutes for Horsham to take the lead - Kieron Pamment’s free kick was met by Joe Shelley who leapt above the defence to head past Callum Fidler in goal - and from that point on the match result was never in any doubt. With ten minutes gone it was 2-0 to the Hornets when an inviting low cross from Mark Knee was side-footed home by Evan Archibald. Horsham were dominating the play

and looked like they could score with every attack while any rare foray by the home side into the Horsham half was efficiently dealt with by the solid defence. On twenty- two minutes the match was effectively over when, following another freekick by Pamment, Shelley again showed his aerial prowess by out jumping his markers to head past Fidler for a virtual identical goal to his first. Lancing did manage to give ‘keeper Williams something to do, albeit an easy catch from a weak shot, but they never looked a threat and Horsham went in three up. The second half in all honesty was a non event. Horsham had won the match in the first forty-five and Lancing came out with the intention of not getting completely hammered; a recipe for stalemate. There were a few half chances for both sides, and Shelley came close to his hat-trick, but at the final whistle the commanding first half performance from Horsham had secured the points and due to Eastbourne Town’s match postponement, the top spot in the table. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Knee, Hunt, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Lewis, Archibald, Pamment, Boswell. Substitutes: Atkinson, Rowe-Hurst, Burfiend, Storrie, Smith.

Tuesday February 16 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham 2 – 1 Arundel

Terry Dodd scores the opening goal

Terry Dodd watches as his header goes in the top corner Saturday February 13 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3 – 1 Worthing United Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Despite a laboured and frustrating display, Horsham YMCA continued their unbeaten start to 2016 with a 3-1 win over fifteenth placed Worthing United at Gorings Mead last Saturday. Nick Sullivan’s seventh goal in as many games set the home side on their way after just six minutes, but the Mavericks responded almost immediately when defender Aaron Hasan reacted quickest to a Wayne Joseph corner and stabbed home an equaliser ninety seconds later.

YM were consistently poor in the final third and quickly found themselves embroiled in another fragmented affair, but two goals in the closing quarter of an hour from Sam Schaaf and substitute Martin Smith eventually secured all three points. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “We were made to work hard again today. Beaten them we have, but it wasn’t all that convincing if I’m being honest. We seem to be bossing the midfield in games, but it’s just that final ball that’s letting us down. We either dink it too long and it goes out, or players are choosing the wrong option when there are three or four other players around them. It wasn’t a great performance again, but there are mitigating circumstances. As well as me having the flu, Craney (Matt Crane)

Terry Dodd’s enforced three week absence, due to his red card, ended on Tuesday night; and he marked his return with two well taken goals. Dodd’s two goals were enough to give Horsham all three points against a determined and battling Arundel side that came close to leaving with at least a point. After the match manager Dom di Paola said “I’m pleased to get that one out of the way” adding “We were a bit worried about this game, to be honest.” The visitors were quickest out of the blocks and it took only a few minutes for Gareth Williams to be called upon to save a well drilled effort from has had it, Hibbs (Anthony Hibbert) has had it and Browny (Dave Brown) has been on antibiotics. Schaafy’s (Sam Schaaf) knee was playing up and we were without Dan Sullivan (injured) and Phil Johnson (holiday). The last half an hour we were knocking on the door and as agitated as I was, I think the result was always going to come. It wasn’t a vintage performance, but it is three points and we have a bit of a break now. I’m grateful to have a week off with no midweek game because we’d be really struggling with this bug that has gone right through the dressing room.” YM: Fox, Carden, Burgess, Crane (Brown 60), Evans, Hibbert, Dugdale, Gedling, Wright, Schaaf (Smith 78), N. Sullivan (Budge 88). Unused subs: Gathern.

Dave Herbert. Arundel front man Josh Briggs was giving the Hornets makeshift defence problems but at the other end visiting ‘keeper James Fernandes saved well from Dodd and Evan Archibald. The breakthrough came after twenty minutes with an opening goal that was all about Dodd’s powerful running and finishing. After picking the ball up in the centre circle the Horsham striker powered his way through the Arundel defence before unleashing a shot that gave Fernandes no chance. Archibald and Dodd had good efforts saved by Fernandes to prevent the Hornets going further ahead but Arundel were proving a stern test and the lively Josh Biggs forced Williams into action on a number of occasions. As the half closed Horsham went into the break a grateful 1-0 up. Horsham started the second period well, putting the Arundel goal under threat with efforts from Archibald, Kieron Pamment. Joe Shelley and Darren Boswell but Horsham found ‘keeper Fernandes in inspiring form. In a move that made Horsham’s task easier, Arundel substituted Josh

Biggs after 60 minutes for what must have been an injury, and almost immediately Dodd’s recorded his and his team’s second goal. After a great passing move Ryan Storrie crossed into the area where Dodd met the ball with a glancing well placed header to find the top corner. With 73 minutes gone Arundel pulled a goal back when substitute Harry Russell headed home Herbert’s free kick to ensure a very nervous last 20 minutes for the Hornets. Sensing that there was something to be had from the match Arundel pressed forward but despite Rory Biggs missing a sitter, Horsham held out for a vital win. Horsham now go into tomorrow’s (Saturday February 20) home match against the leagues whipping boys, St Francis Rangers, still top but looking over their shoulders at Eastbourne Town who trounced East Preston 10-2 on Tuesday. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Storrie, Hunt, Clark, Farmer, Shelley, Dodd, Archibald, Pamment, Boswell, Substitutes: Atkinson, Smith, RoweHurst, Lewis, Keehan.

Saturday February 13 - South League Premier Div. 2 London Edwardians 1 - 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Saturday February 13 - South Clubs’ Women’s League Div. 1 Horsham Ladies 5 - 3 Southgate Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham’s top two hockey teams secured impressive wins when it really mattered in their push for promotion. The men overturned league leaders London Edwardians at Battersea, Jack Dean putting them ahead after eight minutes after being brought down and making no mistake with a penalty flick. The hosts equalised from a short corner after the break but, despite being reduced to nine men, Horsham responded with some great aggressive play showcasing Dom Male on come-

back before Jack converted again from the spot. Team Manager Al Campbell said: “Having Dom back made a huge difference. We’re third and have lost only one game out of our last 11. Tomorrow (Saturday) we play eighth placed Marlow at home, while Tulse Hill & Dulwich – second - entertain London Edwardians in a crucial top of the table clash.” Ladies’ Team Manager Jane Denman told us: “We played very well as a team – our best performance of the season!” Tiff Male equalised in the second minute, Lydia Allen again restoring parity at the break only for current runners up Southgate to lead again in the second half. But, Elle Blakesley drew Horsham level before Sam Stares and CJ White scored, delivering a well deserved 5-2 win. Horsham ladies – fourth - return on February 27 with a trip to Woking.
