Quick action saves life of popular Peter Phil Dennett News Editor
First aiders who saved the life of a former football commentator have earned Holbrook Club in Horsham an award from Brighton and Hove Albion FC. Lifelong Albion fan Peter Brackley owes his life to their speedy action after he collapsed with a heart attack at the club. Horsham Community First Responders went to his aid and fortunately a community defibrillator installed at a nearby parade of shops was available. Now the club will be installing a defibrillator of its own, costing about £2,000, after two donations from Albion In The Community in recognition of the help given. The Albion has awarded the First Responders £2,000 from its Community Shield fund in gratitude for its outstanding work. It has also given the entire takings of the event Mr Brackley was hosting, about £400, to the North West Sussex Seagulls. The life-or-death incident came in a week when it was announced defibrillators will be installed at West Sussex fire stations for pub-

lic use. Experts say the machines give someone an 80 per cent better chance of surviving a heart attack. Mr Brackley, popular for football commentary on radio and television in the 1990s, has recovered well in hospital. After his collapse staff member Jonny Fairhall, who was taught CPR emergency chest compression by the Responders, joined someone from the audience performing CPR. The nearby community defibrillator was fetched and First Responders helped give Mr Brackley vital minutes recovery time while paramedics were awaited. Mr Brackley had been about ten minutes into a fund-raising chat session under the Albion in the Community scheme run by promotion-chasing Championship club Brighton and Hove Albion, of which he is a keen supporter, and the North West Sussex Seagulls. The event last Wednesday evening was immediately abandoned. Holbrook Club manager Matt Russell told the Post: “Defibrillators are vital bits of kit, and the more of this equipment there is the better, because they are the difference between life and death. Most of our staff here are first aid trained. There is a defibrillator up the road but this is a very good donation for us, because we can have one on the premises.”
Mr Brackley, from Lindfield, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and is making a good recovery. Gary Townsend, Chief Operating Officer of Albion in the Community, said: “Will be donating the money raised from the event to help purchase a defibrillator for Holbrook. “Each year AITC/BHAFC receive money from the FA Community Shield to distribute to a local charity and for 2015/16 we have chosen to donate £2000 to Horsham First Responders due to the role they played with Peter. He is recovering well and his family are pleased with how he is doing.” In a move to save more lives defibrillators will be installed across West Sussex in a partnership between West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service. The wall-mounted defibrillators are being fitted outside fire stations where they can be reached at any time by members of the public in the event of someone suffering a heart attack in the area. The first two defibrillators, which have been supplied by South East Coast Ambulance Service, are already in place at Fire Stations in Petworth and Midhurst with 10 others set to be installed at stations around the county over the coming months.

A
Horsham student is set to follow in the footsteps of jazz greats like Gene Kruper and Buddy Rich. Drummer Harry Ling, 17, has won a place in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy Ensemble, one of the training ensembles run by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra which has been providing opportunities for young jazz musicians for 50 years. The ensemble specialises in giving young musicians a firm grounding in jazz essentials: swing, groove, chart-reading and improvisation and crucial experience at playing live gigs. Harry said: “I am really excited about this opportunity to play at such a high level.” A music student studying both music and music technology for A level, Harry’s love of music has been nurtured since joining Christ’s Hospital school at the age of 11, playing drums and percussion.
As well as travelling to London every Saturday morning to the ensemble, Harry also rehearses and performs with the school’s symphony orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble and he is senior drummer with the school’s band, which has played at the Lord Mayor’s Show and at Lord’s. Harry’s mother Marcelle said: “Since joining the academy it has been great to see how readily Harry adapts to different jazz genres in performances, but it is clear that this has been nurtured through his excellent tutelage and the ambitious concerts staged at Christ’s Hospital. It has been a joy to attend all the events since Harry joined the Big Band, so we are rather sad that the next one will be his last, but now we can look forward to his performances with the orchestra in his future music studies.” Harry joins two other students who travel to London each Saturday to further their music studies, Tom Walker and Jeremy Chan who both attend the Junior Royal Academy.
Jose offers self-defence Council gives the go classes for women ahead for County tax rise Women are being offered self-defence instruction in Horsham. The town’s Nam Pai Chuan group will be hosting a women’s self defence class, ran by instructor Jose Manuel, with over 11 years martial arts and self defence experience. The session is for girls and women over 12 years old at Forest School gym, Horsham, on March 5 from 2-4.30pm and cost £10. Jose, pictured, said: “Over the last year or two there have been a few attacks on women in Hor-
sham so I wanted to run an event for women in the area. I'm a kung fu instructor and have done them before a few years ago.” Last week the Post reported how schoolgirl Juliet Knapton, 15, from Lower Beeding, wanted to see self-defence awareness taught at schools after being concerned about attacks in the Horsham area. Jose says that at his sessions people can learn about building awareness and avoidance tactics to avoid confrontational situations. They also offer communication and distraction techniques during verbal confrontation, practical techniques to apply during a physical confrontation, defence against physical attacks with or without a weapon and also what you should do after a confrontation To book call Jose on 07979195714 or message Facebook page www. facebook. com/Hors h a m ShaolinK u n g Fu-NamP a i Chuan
Residents will be forking out 3.95 per cent more in West Sussex council tax from April after the rise was approved by full council at Chichester last week. They also face a rise of 1.2 per cent in Horsham council tax, which was due for formal confirmation at the time The District Post went to press this week. The combined effect of both increases will be to add about £50 a year to the average council tax bill, once a 1.98 per cent in Sussex Police tax and parish precepts are added. The Government pledged an extra £6.2million to West Sussex after protests from councillors about cuts in funding from central government. But the council decided to use the money to prop up services rather than reduce the council tax increase. pledged to the county from the Government. It has warned that despite the extra money savings will still have to be made because in 2016-17 it will have a shortfall of £44 million while facing increasing demand for services. A Horsham district council tax rise of an average of £1.63 a year was up for approval by full council on February 24. The council tax increase includes the two per cent charge announced by Chancellor George Osborne in November 2015 to help councils meet the needs of an increasingly ageing
population. The remaining gap in funding will be bridged by £18.6m of savings planned for next year and over £11m of savings already delivered in previous years.
The Government pledged an extra £6.2 millions to West Sussex Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “The council tax increase has not been put forward lightly. The government has signalled a change in approach to council tax. Instead of encouraging freezes, they are actively encouraging increases by building these into the funding allocation. “However, despite budgeting for a steep cut in funding from Government, the settlement we received was worse than expected. “We raised our concerns about the settlement at a meeting with the Local Government Minister, Marcus Jones and with our local MPs. We were pleased to receive a small amount of temporary funding for 2016/17 and 2017/18. “However, we still find ourselves faced with an extremely tight budget and need to address the funding gap over the medium term.”

‘S’ is for secret as MP Campaign super group wins Quin sits spelling test best costume at pancake race
Horsham MP Jeremy Quin sat a spelling test when he visited Billingshurst Primary School to congratulate pupils and staff on an impressive improvement. Mr Quin met head teacher Helen Williamson, staff, governors and children to congratulate them on one of the fastest school “turnarounds” Ofsted has seen. Billingshurst moved up in only 20 months from “Requires Improvement”to “Good”, only just missing an “Outstanding” rating. The Horsham MP was given a tour of the school by the house captains, and talked to teachers and pupils. He also learned first-hand how rigorous testing now is in core subjects by joining Year 6 pupils for a spelling test. The results have not been revealed. Mr Quin updated Miss Williamson on recent developments of the fair school funding campaign of which Jeremy is very much at the forefront, working alongside other West Sus-
sex MP’s and local heads teachers. He said: ““Billingshurst Primary is a very happy school with good leadership. It was a pleasure to hear such a good news story about their performance. Turning around a school is not easy but Billingshurst has done a terrific job.” Miss Williamson said: ‘It was a pleasure to welcome Jeremy to our school and to show him what a happy and successful school we are. I was particularly impressed that he willingly sat a Year 6 spelling test however the results are a state secret. “It was very helpful to hear an update on the ‘Worth Less?’ campaign and to be able to share the concerns we have for our school with him. The children certainly enjoyed meeting their Member of Parliament.” Mr Quin regularly visits schools, charities, businesses and community groups in the Horsham constituency, please let him know if you would like Jeremy to visit you by emailing him at jeremy.quin.mp@parliament.uk.
A flying pancake did not stop the The Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions campaign group winning in the Horsham Rotary Club Pancake Race in the Carfax, Horsham. The unexpected spill and landing at the end of the team’s heat meant it was out, but it won the best costume trophy with Super Girl outfits that featured ‘No Second Runway’ motifs instead of the ‘S’. The group raised money for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity in Billingshurst, and said it was appropriate because that would be one of the schools that would be affected by new flight paths off a new runway at Gatwick should they be approved. Super girls Sally Pavey, Sharon Gardner, Lucy Donovan and Kristine Webb with mascot Leah are pictured. Last week the Post featured other pictures from the pancake race.
Extra police patrols to combat gangs Young drug users in Horsham are among groups being tackled by extra police patrols. Police in Horsham have stepped up patrols in the town centre to tackle drugs misuse, theft and antisocial behaviour involving groups of youths. Officers are targeting areas where youths are known to gather and Sussex Police say they will take robust action against offenders. Some have been seen smoking cannabis, a Class B controlled drug, and police are particularly keen to address this issue.
Officers are being supported by local councils, anti-social behaviour case workers and youth workers. PC James Munden, of the Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Large groups of youths can be intimidating and there has recently been evidence that they have been linked to criminal damage, shoplifting and drug abuse. "It is important that parents and guardians know the whereabouts of their children and are aware of the negative impact that large groups roaming the streets can have on the local community."
Free school plan to ease classroom pressure Families on an estate that is listed for an award might have a noncouncil school for children. It follows a decision that it would be too expensive to move the current nearby council-run Shelley Primary School at Broadbridge Heath. Instead discussions will be held about starting what is known as a “Free School”, paid for from central taxes but not run by West Sussex County Council. The Wickhurst Green estate turned 138 acres of farm land into 963 homes, adding pressure for more school places in the area. A site had been earmarked at the estate development for the potential moving and expansion of nearby Shelley Primary School. The estate is one of seven projects in West Sussex shortlisted for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors South East Awards for the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments. The Project of the Year will be announced on May 12 in Brighton. Broadbridge Heath Parish Council said in a statement it had only very recently been made aware that the plan to relocate Shelley School to a site on the new development to the south of the village is unlikely to go
ahead in the foreseeable future. It said: “If this is the case, the Parish Council are bitterly disappointed that yet again the village has been let down. Broadbridge Heath will double in size in the next few years, yet it seems that key facilities that
It is no wonder that the Parish Council and local residents feel that they have been misled and cheated. were stipulated in the West of Horsham Masterplan, namely a new primary school and a GP surgery, will not be delivered. It is no wonder that the Parish Council and local residents feel that they have been misled and cheated.” “We have asked West Sussex County Council for a statement to clarify the situation and to confirm that the education of children in the village, both now and in the future, will not be adversely affected in anyway. It is unacceptable that our young people may have to travel to other areas for education when the expectation has always been that there would be provision right here
in our own village.” A county council spokesman told the Post: “We are currently working with the head teacher at Shelley Primary School in relation to the area’s growing population. It is important that we explore all options available to us in order to meet the local demand for school places. This includes the potential for increasing the school’s current published admission number.“There are also plans to meet with the Department for Education to discuss the possibility of a Free School for the Broadbridge Heath development. This would provide an opportunity to look at access to a different funding stream. Financial implications will be discussed with the Department as part of last year’s commitment made by the government to build 500 new free schools nationwide.“Previous plans to relocate Shelley Primary School were investigated by the county council but the costs were prohibitive. We will continue to work with the local residents and authorities to ensure there are sufficient school places available for children in the area.”Free schools may be run by parents, teachers, community groups, charities, businesses, universities, faith groups and independent schools.
Anyone with concerns about children and drugs can contact the West Susex Young Persons' Substance Misuse Service on 0300 303 8677, option 1, or 07779 339954. They can also email wsypsms@cri.org.uk. Students take a look at China
S
tudents got a glimpse of capitalism in a communist country when they visited China. The 50 politics and history students from Collyer’s college in Horsham took a week’s study trip to unique historical sites and stunning countryside, and experienced a capitalist economy within a communist regime. Subject leader for politics George Lear said: “We were all struck by how quickly Beijing seemed to be changing before our eyes and also by the tensions between economic freedom and political restrictions.” Politics students, studying the development of Communism, were particularly interested in visiting Tiananmen Square and Chairman Mao's mausoleum, where they witnessed first-hand the continuing devotion of some Chinese people to Mao in highly charged scenes. Historians, who study modern Chinese history as part of their A Level course, visited many sites such as the Forbidden City and the National Museum of China in an attempt to gain greater understanding of the transition from millennium old empire to communism. The Great Wall of China was a particular highlight and students tackled the strenuous gradients with vigour, many reaching the highest point near Beijing after an hour long trek. Mr Lear said: “The students responded to the different cultures impressively and very much enjoyed experiencing a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and a tour of the Hutongs of Beijing, to see how Beijingers traditionally lived. The students have thoroughly enjoyed their visit and learned so much. It was a superb experience for all of us.”
Police seek bike owner Police investigating the suspected theft of a motorcycle in West Chiltington are seeking its owner. On February 11 the small black wheeled 50cc air cooled off road 'pit bike with no number plate was seen being pushed along a footpath in the village. Police are appealing to anyone in the West Chiltington, Storrington and Pulborough areas who have had a black motorcycle stolen from them in the last few months to get in touch. They are asking people to also check garages or outbuildings where they might have stored one to see if it is missing. A 19-year-old man from West Chiltington was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police constable and after being interviewed he was bailed until March 4 while enquiries continue. Anyone having any information please contact the police via 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 650 of 11/02. People can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www. crimestoppers-org.uk).

Shoppers get lift in revamp
Shopper will get new lifts in Horsham town centre. They will be installed this year in the Forum and Piries Place car parks. The installation programme was due to start today, February 29, in the Forum car park and in the Piries Place car park on 1 August 1 . Horsham District Council says the work in each car park should take about six months, resulting in all the work being completed by October 2016. The replacement programme, which is fully funded by the council, will cost about £325,000 and the council says it will improve facilities in both car parks by providing more reliable lifts with vandal resistant finishes. The work will replace one lift at

Any queries regarding the installation of the lifts should be directed to the council’s Property and Facilities team by emailing:property@ horsham.gov.uk. Put a spring into charity’s step to help out people like Henry Dancers and diners will raise money for children like well-loved Henry Maxwell with a Spring ball. The three-year-old, who lives with quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, showed improvement after being helped by the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s charity centre near Billingshurst, where he attends. The charity’s big fund-raiser, the annual Spring Ball, is taking place on March 19 at the four star Felbridge Hotel and Spa in East Grinstead. Guests will enjoy a drinks reception, a three course meal, live entertainment and dancing. All the money raised will go directly to the charity that supports babies and children under 5 with Cerebral Palsy and other motor learning difficulties. Henry’s parents Andrew and Emma Maxwell were at first shocked to hear his diagnosis, especially as his twin sister Sophie had no problems. He was six weeks old before being allowed home, with a cocktail of medication, and later he was diagnosed with his current condition. Emma said: “We were thrown into a world that left us bewildered, scared and unsure what to expect or even what to do to help our little boy. We discovered the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity and they arranged for us to come to meet them. That first meeting gave us lots of hope for the

future as we watched the staff play with Henry during his assessment and fortunately there was a place for Henry to start the following month. “We really cannot thank the team at the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity enough for their support and advice to help us to help Henry reach his full potential.”Guests will enjoy a drinks reception followed by a deli-

Future Choices fair draws 600 people Youngsters have more food for thought after The Weald School, Billingshurst, held its 22nd Future Choices Fair. Considered the flagship event in its rolling careers programme, the session attracted more than 600 people. The Fair was open to students across all year groups. The evening is designed to help students to make informed decisions about their future choices, whether they are considering apprenticeships, further or higher education or employment. Throughout the evening, students talked with business professionals, gaining first hand insight into entry routes, experience required to break into particular industries along with employability skills and raising awareness of the number of career opportunities available in the world of work. With a record breaking 55 exhibi-

First time exhibitor and former student James Tucker from Microsoft said: “It was a fantastic experience to be back at the Weald after leaving almost four years ago. I can remember visiting the Careers Fair myself numerous times and not having a clue what I wanted to do, so it was brilliant to talk to the students and show them just how many options are open to them. It was great to hear from individuals ranging from Year 7 all the way to Year 12 who were excited about the opportunities available, and offer the advice which I wanted to hear when I was in their shoes”. Fire walkers set for a challenge
Ready for firewalk Fire walkers will raise money for vulnerable young children and their families in Horsham. Family support charity HomeStart Arun is offering what it calls a rare opportunity to take part in a ‘Fire Walk,’ at its fundraising event being held at Horsham Rugby Club on March 11. The ‘Fire Walk’ is a new challenge activity the charity is organising this year, and it is asking local people to get involved and show their support. Home-Start Manager Bridget Richardson said: “I’m not the bravest person, but this caught my imagination. It’s a great chance to do
something completely out of my comfort zone. “I’m looking for people who, like me, are looking to challenge themselves by undertaking something new and different. Not only will they get the satisfaction of beating the fear, but raise some much needed funds for us to continue our work with vulnerable children and families. Family and friends can cheer from the sidelines to give encouragement and keep spirits high. There will be food and drink available to keep everyone going.” Last year Home-Start Arun helped 233 local children, with their

team of trained volunteers offering support in the family home. Bridget said: “We are passionate about our work and want to make sure we can continue helping local families in the future. The Big Lottery Fund has given us great financial support over the last 3 years, but we need to replace its support, so backing from our local community is vital. If you would like to secure your place on the Fire Walk, or are interested in finding out about other Home-Start fundraising challenges, please call them on 01903 889707, or visit http://www.homestartarun.org.uk.

Life in the workhouse
History fans can hear about the Shipley workhouse at a talk in Southwater. It will be held on March 7 at 7.30pm at Beeson House, Lintot Square. Non-members will be welcome at £3 entry. Gordon and Pippa Reay, who have lived in the former workhouse for nearly 30 years, will be giving a talk on “A History of Shipley Workhouse and its place in the Poor Law system” for the Southwater Local History group, having given the talk to Shipley History Group last year. Their presentation will include scanned photographs, maps, old documents and newspaper cuttings. In the 18th and 19th centuries, poorhouses or workhouses were set up on a parish basis.
A report of 1777 recorded parish workhouses in operation in the Horsham Borough in Ifield, accommodating 20 inmates, Itchingfield four, Beeding 14, Rusper 40, Shipley 26, Slynfold 13, Warnham 20, and West Grinstead 30. At this time, it is believed the Shipley parish workhouse might have been at Renches Farmhouse, near Dragon’s Green. By the early 19th century, the workhouse was being operated from a building on the west side of Pound Lane, Shipley and said to be capable of housing up to 80 paupers. The building still exists, now known as 28 and 29 Whitehart Cottages, with the former workhouse master’s cottage close by. There does not appear to have been a separate workhouse for Southwater.
Poverty and the treatment of it has been an issue throughout the ages and Gordon and Pippa will give a brief summary of the key changes in the Poor Law of England from Medieval times. They will also explain the shocking changes in the 1830s which directly affected the destitute in this area and they say listeners will be grateful that they live in these times of the welfare state. The audience will also hear tales of the Shipley workhouse rules, civil unrest, forced separation of families, children in appalling conditions and the heart-wrenching experience of one local family forced to resort to the workhouse. The location at Pound lane is shown on the 1875 map below.

Record attendance at ‘Not Going to Uni’ evening A record 170 students and parents attended the Collyer’s college ‘Not Going to Uni’evening in Horsham. They were treated to a live ‘Question Time’ style session, hosted by Collyer’s senior tutor Ian McAlister, outlining the postcollege world of work and training. Although the majority of Collyer’s students progress to university and higher education, a number of them are considering other things, including starting work. Mr McAlister, who runs the col-

Saying Hi to High Places
Children from Kingslea School experienced a rare treat this week, as they were invited to be the first to take on the High Places aerial adventure challenge, at Pavilions In The Park. The children from year 5 took on the courses: Ropes, Swings and Climbing things, at the opening ceremony on Monday. High Places offers a range of challenges and adventures, including low and high ropes obstacle courses, a climbing wall and the fan descender jump from a 10 metre platform, at the top of the tower. In addition to the public elements of the course, there are team building challenges for school and corporate groups, including the totem, crate stack and gladiator challenges, plus the exciting leap of faith jump.
With various packages on offer, prices start from just £10 and go up with levels of bravery and adventurousness! The course is open daily, with a variety of start times available each day and extended opening hours in the Summer months. The High Places course has been installed by Places for People Leisure, who manage The Pavilions In The Park in partnership with Horsham District Council. Tim Bolton, Contract Manager for PFP Leisure said: “The High Places scheme is a great addition to Pavilions In The Park, offering a great way to keep the kids active and entertained and offering an activity for the whole family to enjoy together. Our outdoor learning packages also offer great value to local schools, groups and companies right on their door-

A major part of that vision, is offering opportunities to take part in new leisure activities. I am delighted that this amazing new activity is now available in the district. My thanks go to Places for People, who were instrumental in bringing this facility to life. I would urge as many of you as possible to come along and give it a try.” High Places is now open to the public and you can be one of the first to experience this exciting new adventure. Pilot project to challenge MOTD’s Pearce urges “be different” domestic abuse behaviour People who cruelly blight lives with domestic abuse in West Sussex are to be challenged about their behaviour in a national pilot project. The three-year project aims to reduce the number of victims by using specialists to examine why people attack partners physically and verbally and trying to get them to change their ways. More than half the attackers in West Sussex have alcohol, substance misuse, or mental health issues. Nationally two women a week die as a result of domestic homicide and 100,000 people a year are at high risk of being murdered or seriously harmed every year. “The Drive” project aims to reduce the number of child and adult victims of domestic abuse by developing what experts call a ‘whole system response’ that influences perpetrators to change their behaviour. Research carried out by SafeLives, a national charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse and one of three organisations behind the scheme, found 38% of perpetrators in West Sussex had alcohol or substance misuse issues and 15% had mental health issues. The team will target around 100 perpetrators a year for three years,
working for up to 10 months with each person referred to the service. Case Workers will act as a single point of contact for perpetrators and will be responsible for driving positive behaviour change. They will also work closely with Independent Domestic Violence Advisers to ensure the safety of victims who, as part of the project, will receive extended support. Domestic abuse victim Rachel Williams said: “The perpetrator is the problem. Why is it that the victim is the one who has to move and seek refuge, when the perpetrator carries on as normal? If we don’t deal with them - then they just move onto the next victim. We have to at least try and change mindsets.” Katy Bourne, Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, said: “By addressing perpetrators’ behaviour this programme will target the root cause of domestic abuse and, crucially, improve outcomes for victims and children. There is currently no specialist intervention for those who continually abuse. Therefore, it is vital that we improve the response to perpetrators to reduce the number of victims currently experiencing domestic abuse, limit the harm to children and prevent further victimisation.”
Jonathan with students The man whose voice brings to life football matches for millions proved a hit with a much smaller audience. Match of the Day commentator Jonathan Pearce told Central Sussex College students about his life in football. The popular football figure, who is known for his animated commentary, gave what the college described as an inspiring talk using the late David Bowie , of whom he is a fan, as an example of how young people can take control of their futures and work hard to achieve their goals.
Jonathan, who during his radio and television career has commentated on World Cups, European Championships and the Women’s World Cup, and hundreds of league games, had some words of advice for the students. He said that they needed to ‘be different, be creative and get your facts right’ if they are to make it in sport. He spoke to the students about the many career opportunities in sport, from journalism to analysis, emphasising that although they may have to consider different paths, carving out a career in the industry is a very real possibility.
Suitably impressed with Jonathan’s extensive experience in football, the students were also fascinated to hear about the time he spent working alongside his close friend the late Bobby Moore and were amused by the story of a disastrous interview with footballing legend Pelè. To conclude his talk, Jonathan, from Hassocks, encouraged the students to launch their careers by being ‘confident, prepared and willing to ask questions’. He was delighted to speak to students after the session and gave some valuable advice about ways into professional sports coaching and working abroad.

Mer-men and Manchurians Neil Arnold Sussex Folklore
In my last article I spoke about how in 1926 a wombat was shot dead in Sussex, and so I’d like to concentrate on a few more peculiar cases involving the natural – or in this case, the unnatural world. Believe it or not but in the year 1187 it was claimed that a ‘merman’ was frequenting waters around Sussex. I’ve spoken before about Sussex mermaid legends but in this case it was said that a creature “resembling a man but unable to speak” was caught “on the Sussex coast” and “kept as prisoner by the governor of the district for six months.” Nobody seems to know what happened to the creature, some stories claim it died in Sussex whilst others believe it escaped from its confine and escaped into the foaming waters. Of course, there are no other details available to tell us if this was indeed a real mer-creature, which of course seems unlikely or maybe it had been a freak of nature just like the poor creature mentioned in the Sussex Agricultural Express of March 3 1916. The animal was described as an “extraordinary Falmer freak” and resembling a “pig with an elephant’s head.” The article in question; although brief; provided a very dark photograph of the said creature; adding that ‘the freak only lived for three days’ but in spite of the sensational headline was, rather sadly, a deformed pig with a misshapen head that seemed to suggest some sort of trunk and large ears. Over the years, strange archaeological digs have unearthed some peculiar remnants around Sussex, one of the most fascinating being the enormous bird-like print discovered in 1862 at Hastings. The Belfast Morning News at the time reported that the “foot of a gigantic bird” had been found in a slab of stone at Sussex. According to the report it “has three toes, each of which is about nine inches long in the tread, with a claw at the end, of perhaps two inches in length”. The print had been left by a monster bird
which would have been twelve-feet in height. Of course, such an impression comes from a time we can only read about when other giants walked the earth but in 1923 Sussex was visited by its own modern monster bird. According to the Hastings Observer a mysterious large bird had been shot near Fairlight by a chap named T. Wilkinson. The bird had first been witnessed by Mr Wilkinson two months previous to June 1923 when he was farming at Shear Barn Farm. At first he thought he was observing a very large heron but upon closer observation realised it was not marked as so; and it seemed to often disturb the smaller birds in the vicinity. The mysterious bird would then flee the area, only to return a few days later and even frightened the cattle grazing in the nearby fields. “It had enormous wings” reported Mr. Wilkinson, “…and stood as high as a man and I was afraid it might attack some of my young calves.”
today’s climate there are just under three-thousand of these birds left in the wild. What is clear however is that such a bird must have become lost on its migratory route; seemingly comfortable with being at Fairlight. The newspaper article commented that ‘If the bird has not escaped from captivity it is believed to be the first specimen of its kind to be seen flying about wild in this country.’ However, some confusion arose when it was discovered that a Damoiselle crane had escaped from captivity at London’s Kew Gardens and it was most likely that the bird shot by Mr. Wilkinson was in fact this individual. “If this should be the case…” the story ended, “Mr. Wilkinson states he is perfectly willing to hand the stuffed bird over to gardens authorities.”
The animal was described as an ‘extraordinary Falmer freak’ and resembling ‘a pig with an elephant’s head’ Mr. Wilkinson always had trouble getting close to the beast but finally, in early June 1923 he managed to hide behind a cow; and get within shooting distance of the bird. He commented, “The moment it saw me it took to the wing but my shot broke its legs and a wing and it fell. I went up to it but it suddenly shot its neck out and pecked me on the lip.” Sadly, the bird was put to death and stuffed – it had a white body, black tail feathers and a dark grey head and was identified as a Manchurian crane; more commonly known as a Red-crowned crane and Japanese crane; a bird which features in Japanese and Chinese mythology as a symbol of longevity and immortality. A shame of course that such a specimen was killed especially when one considers that in

New phase in campaign against child sexual abuse in Sussex Social media is being used to help youngsters in Sussex avoid becoming victims of sexual exploitation. The key message in the second phase of the Sussex Child Sexual Exploitation awareness campaign is: “Child Sexual Exploitation is never the child’s fault.” The county-wide campaign launched last month with awareness raising for parents, carers and the general public. The campaign is using social media channels, particulary Twitter and Instagram, signposting to videos and web pages, with advice and details on how to contact sources of advice. Facebook adverts are also being used. The campaign also includes adverts in trains funded by the Sus-
to #StopCSE. The second phase of this campaign, launched last week, focuses on children aged 12-18 about what Child Sexual Exploitation could be. Sussex Police and partners want all children regardless of gender, sexual orientation, background or ethnicity to be equipped with the knowledge that should a relationship online or in the real world appear to be not quite what it seems, they know what to do and where to get guidance. More importantly children must feel confident about talking about Child Sexual Exploitation to someone they trust, and get the support that they need. The aim is to encourage children to share these important messages with their friends, siblings and family too.
sex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, and billboards near schools, together with posters in GP surgeries, sexual health clinics and hospital accident and emergency departments as well as in local schools and colleges. Child Sexual Exploitation is child abuse in which the victim is given something (food, money, drugs, alcohol or gifts) in exchange for sexual activity with the abuser. This is a crime that can affect any child; boys or girls, anytime, anywhere, regardless of their social or ethnic background. Sussex Police are working with the independent Local Safeguarding Children Boards to deliver in partnership an understanding of how everyone has a part to play in helping
#nosmokingday
The second phase of the campaign also focuses on professionals whose job means they come into contact with children on a regular basis. By targeting professionals such as teachers, youth-workers and medical staff, the aim is to help to stop the abuse before it happens. The campaign also includes adverts in trains funded by the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, and billboards near schools, together with posters in GP surgeries, sexual health clinics and hospital emergency and accident departments as well as in local schools and colleges. Detective Superintendent Jason Tingley, police lead for the campaign said, “ Child Sexual Exploitation can be seen as a hidden crime. A child

We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

Drew Dewshall
Drew Dewshall
Business Martin Read – Reporter Horsham’s Gobsmack Comics near the bronze of William Pirie with his donkey and cart is a fascinating shop, with nothing like it for miles around. As the name suggests, comics from the Golden Age to the modern era - are a mainstay but Drew Dewshall’s attractively laid out shop has much more on offer. The very wide range of stock includes T shirts, models, figures and the best variety of collectibles, merchandise and toys with Star Wars items proving especially popular. Drew
tells the District Post: “I set up Gobsmack Comics with Kris Hazard and we spent about a year touring the country doing conventions and trading online. In September last year we did a one-month stint in Pop-up Horsham in Swan Walk and that convinced me to open the store in Piries Place.” Although Drew uses world wide distributors and can source, supply and despatch iconic items, he is also delighted to support local writers and artists and works with producers from the district by selling their original colourfully designed range of handmade bags and wallets. The founders of Gobsmack are crea-
tive, too - with artwork from Kris and words by Drew there will soon be the release of their own comic, “Dark Fractures”. The shop is an excellent spot to browse, with beautifully illustrated and lovingly protected pristine original editions of The Eagle from the 1950s quickly grabbing attention. Dan Dare jumps from the pages along with adaptations of literary classics, boys own blogs as well as early editions from Marvel and DC, nestling alongside equally enticing contemporary publications. Drew continues: “Our action figures and merchandise do very well, especially with the launch of big
movies like Star Wars. We will be putting on events throughout the year to help promote the shop and do some fun things for the community. We also buy as well as sell, so if you’re ready to part with some of your collection then let us know – we pay cash!” Drew also sells his products online via www.GobsmackComics. co.uk, where you can also find their entertaining podcasts and, as well as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, there is Gobsmack TV, accessible via YouTube, Drew adding: “The channel features games and films with trailers, clips and teasers – and generally celebrates geek
Introducing the Beauty Loft Bodywise Gym is gearing up for the spring, ….. not sure it has warmed up to spring temperatures yet, however that did not stop Mitzi taking me out side to use the training bars. Another tough workout, although great fun and something different. There are so many levels you can train too, I just about managed the basics…with the use of a chair, although with practice this is a really good apparatus to add to a work out. Having just celebrated her first year at the premises in Warnham, Mitzi has made so many improvements to this quirky building, the layout here is really nice as it has its own areas and you are never over exposed and having the use of the outside is just fantastic. Now resident on the top floor that overlooks the roof tops of Warnham is The Beauty Loft, hair and beauty studio, Nikki and Alison have known Mitzi for many years, their paths had all crossed at a popu-
lar Heath Spa where they had all worked. Alison and Nikki were both really keen to move their business here in Warnham and work as great team again, adding to the portfolio at Bodywise Studios. The Girls invited me up for a treat, and it was so lovely, I finished my work out and first met with Alison in her tranquil room and was spoilt the very popular ‘Dermalogica Age Smart’ facial which fights the signs of ageing, by controlling the biochemical triggers that lead to skin ageing. It was so fantastic I walked out like porcelain. Alison has over 12 years experience as a beauty therapist and after many years working in the high street salons and hotel spa’s she has lots of knowledge ‘being an independent salon enables me to personalise my service to all my clients’ Nikki then welcomed me to her salon, she offers years of experience and was really helpful, She listened to my gripes and consulted me through
what she recommended and what I wanted, she discussed the condition of my hair and what lengths work for me which I found really beneficial. It’s no surprise they are already very popular and word of mouth has got them off to a flying start. You can contact Nikki on 07949877431 or you can book online at www. thehairdresser.info , Alison 07903 860333 www.salon28.uk This week saw Bodywise continue its charity work and Friday was a fantastic atmosphere and rewarding to watch those who push me, pushing themselves for a great cause ‘Our rowathon started at 8am on Friday morning, there were four personal trainers trying to row for 12 hours straight to raise money for ABF The Soldiers Charity. We managed to row 112,000 metres and raise £275 so far, we had a great time and can’t wait for out next challenge…’ Bodywise Gym & Studio, Warnham, tel 01403 271698

culture in its entirety!” The business is a labour of love backed by unbeatable enthusiasm and product knowledge and there is nothing that Drew loves more than to source that elusive, special customer requirement, summing up: “Not everything is on our website, so just let us know if there is anything we can obtain for you – we want you to love what we do!” The reviews on Google confirm that customers certainly do relish the unique service provided by Gobsmack Comics in Horsham’s Piries Place. info@gobsmackcomics.co.uk 0800 689 1821.

Top flight duo return to Horsham What do you get if you cross a Lincolnshire-born singer-songwriter with a Scottish-born, Dutchraised singer? Well, if you’re very lucky, what you get is Winter Wilson, who will be making a welcome return to Horsham Folk Club on March 6. Formed from the ashes of 90s folk-rock outfit, Ragtrade, Winter Wilson had been plying their trade, part-time, on the UK acoustic music scene for around twenty years when, in 2012, they decided to give up their “proper jobs” and make music their living. And what a good decision that was! Their reputation has blossomed, with appearances at folk clubs and festivals across the UK, winning many new fans for their own style of “joyous rebellion”. “It’s a phrase used in a review, by a music journalist who’d seen us live,” says Kip Winter, “We like it; it kind of sums us up. We’re known for great songs and harmonies, but there’s always that element of unpredictability - call it comedy if you like, but it’s just the way we are.” Indeed it’s their live performances that really set this pair apart, bringing passion, intelligence, humour and “refreshing undertones of dry rebellion” to every gig. Kip’s voice is simply one of the best in the business, delivering power and emotion in equal measure - described by one promoter as “from melting to belting”. In the
past she has sung everything from jazz to opera, but is at her best and happiest when singing folk and blues. Originating from the Outer Hebrides (though raised in Southern Holland - it’s a long story!), Kip brings a wealth of folk history and stories from the Islands, together with a broader, blues-based approach, to much of the duo’s music. She also plays piano accordion, flute, and occasional guitar. Described by the great John Tams (Sharpe, Warhorse, currently in ITV’s Jericho) as a “magnificent” songwriter, Dave Wilson is now recognised as one of the best on the English acoustic scene, with his songs covered by some of folk’s “greats”. His lyrics are thought provoking, often challenging, but always beautifully crafted. He also has a mellow, relaxed singing style and plays a mean guitar and banjo. Together, the pair’s voices are simply sublime. David Aird, Chairman of Glenfarg Folk Club, stated: “In 30 years of listening to folk music, I have never heard two voices blend so perfectly”. Winter Wilson have definitely been on the up since their last appearance at Horsham in 2013, playing clubs, theatres and festivals across the UK. “Cutting Free”, the duo’s sixth album, received excellent reviews and air play in the UK and beyond, and was selected by the Daily Telegraph as one of its top “10 fine folk albums for Summer 2014”.
This latest tour showcases Winter Wilson’s new album, Ashes & Dust, described by Mike Harding as a “cracking new CD”, with Austerity “one of the strongest songs of the last twelve months”. The tour takes the duo all over the UK, as well as into Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. Dave commented: “Whilst the album isn’t officially released until March 7th, we will have advance copies for sale on the night”. Since becoming fulltime musicians, the couple haveestablished their own cottage indust r y ,
writing songs, recording, designing album co v e r s , posters, tee shirts, websites, promotion, setting up tours and spending most of the
year living in a camper van. Indeed hilarious stories of their travels (and mishaps!) are interspersed with the songs, to provide a great evening’s entertainment. Horsham Folk club meets every Sunday evening at 8pm (doors 7:45) at the Normandy Centre, in Denne Road (RH12 1JF), bringing the best of folk and acoustic music to the town. Entry on the door costs just £6 (or £4 for members

Multi award-winning comedian, adventurer and world record holder, Tim FitzHigham, is coming to The Capitol Studio. He has had lots of bad ideas: He rowed the English Channel in a bathtub! Now, inspired by centuries-old bets, recorded in the betting books of revered gentlemen’s clubs, Tim attempts: pushing a wheelbarrow 25 miles, in a bet with Top Gear’s Richard Hammond (as first attempted by Goliath Shadbolt in 1789); standing on one leg for 12 hours (a bet from the year 1815); cycling from London to Dover before his friend can draw a million dots;
racing a racehorse over 100 yards (Yes, a racehorse); walking backwards for 30 miles and other deathdefying feats. The Gambler sold out at the Edinburgh Festival in 2011, Melbourne International Festival (Australia) in 2012, Adelaide Festival (Australia) in 2013 and the New Zealand International Comedy Festival in 2014, so don’t miss this opportunity to see the show locally ‘Gut Bustingly funny’ ***** The Scotsman ‘FitzHigham utterly immerses himself into the tasks making him a brilliantly compelling, fired up

July set of events set to inspire across the arts spectrum Look forward to an exciting summer, starting July 9-17, when the new Horsham Festival launches its first Horsham Town Centre and area focused celebration of the arts. In its first year, the Horsham Festival will feature a range of events and performances, that present many local artists and performers, and engage audiences right across the arts spectrum, from music and dance, to theatre and visual arts. The phrase ‘something for everyone’ is much over used, but is a fair description of what is hoped will become the Festivals greatest appeal over time. At the core of the festival will be some well-known events, groups and venues, such as the renowned Shipley Arts Festival, Horsham Artist’s Open Studios, the District Council organised ‘Sparks in the Park’ and independent charity ‘Horsham Garden Music Festival’ weekend. Horsham Music Circle, Horsham Folk Club and HAODs also plan events, along with many more less locally well-known groups and individuals, to be announced over the coming months. Horsham Festival has been set
up as a charitable organisation and already has over 20 local arts and events groups involved. It aims to give a focus to Horsham’s already vibrant scene, creating an Arts Festival that, in time, will be regionally recognised. A key objective is to foster local youth
development in the arts, seeking to create a powerful relationship between those that aspire to perform or create
and those that already do. Youth involvement is being integrated in to the Festival’s management from the start, ensuring that the Festival’s future is shaped by a true cross section of tastes and talents from across the community. Given current levels of local community enthusiasm for the arts, Horsham Festival promises to be the new shiny summer star in Horsham’s annual event programme. Festival Chairman, Paul Bellringer said: “Bringing together so many parts of Horsham’s artistic community, is a bold step and one that has tremendous potential. We can’t promise to be able to include everyone in the year one programme, but if there are any performing or creative groups, potential sponsors or venues who aren’t already involved and would like to be, please email us your details at enquiries@horshamfestival. co.uk” Public and performers alike can follow The Festival at www.facebook.com/horshamfestival or visit www.horshamfestival.co.uk and will also be able to subscribe to a google calendar of events, via the web page, in due course.

Storrington village. Internally, the property is well laid out with French double glazed doors leading from each room onto outside terraced areas. Accommodation comprises: sitting room, dining room, kitchen/breakfast room,

New homes buyers set to benefit from reduced heating bills The energy saving credentials of new homes are under the spotlight this week with buyers of new homes set to benefit most from the latest in technology which is keeping heating bills down. Research by five star housebuilder David Wilson Homes, which is building new homes in Storrington, reveals that 80 per cent of people questioned in a poll thought you could save up to £400 on heating bills with a new home.
In fact you can save up to £1,312 on a new four bedroom detached property compared with an improved Victorian home also with four bedrooms. “People are aware that the building technology and the ability to closely control the temperature of a new home is better than an older property but the savings are far more than most people believe,’’ said David Wilson Homes sales director Lynnette St Quin-
ton. “Even buyers of a three bedroom semi detached home could save as much as £840.” The age of a property is one of the biggest influences on a heating bill even if improvements have been made. New homes are up to 55 per cent more energy efficient than older ones with features such as highly efficient boilers and modern low heat loss cylinders which keep water hotter for longer making a huge difference. “A new home today is better by design – and David Wilson customers have come to expect generous accommodation,” added Lynnette. “However, we now combine this with the new build techniques and new technology to minimise energy bills. You could save hundreds of pounds on fuel
bills compared with older homes and also live a greener lifestyle with lower carbon dioxide emissions.” The improved performance of David Wilson Homes has been made possible by: •Energy efficient boilers – the latest technology to provide heating and hot water •Higher performance double glazing – which is now better than even ten years ago •More insulation – floors, walls and lofts are highly insulated to minimise heat loss To find out how you can save money on energy bills in a new build home and to understand more about how David Wilson Homes help you stay warm, visit http://www.dwh.co.uk/why-buynew/Why-buy-new/

Sport Horsham go second as fiery Jack sinks Marlow Saturday February 20 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 7 - 0 Marlow Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham jumped to second with a clinical dismissal of Marlow, Jack Dean scoring four, taking his seasonal tally to 20, five goals ahead of his nearest league rival. In previous encounters Horsham have found Marlow troublesome but they laid that ghost – with a vengeance. When birthday boy skipper Dun-
can Howarth was fouled after three minutes Dean scored from the spot before polishing off his hat trick mid way through the first half with two of his speciality field goals, putting the outcome beyond doubt given Horsham’s rampant confidence. A second half close quarters Dean deflection was followed by two Cirdec Atkinson goals and a Matt Hough short corner, Horsham running out 7 nil winners. Jubilant Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “This was a fantastic game for players and spectators. Our forwards were superb but

the defence deserved huge praise, too because high scoring Marlow were anaesthetised in mid field and at the back, allowing the forwards free reign. This was a cracking clean sheet team performance!” Tomorrow (Saturday 27) Horsham now just two points behind leaders London Edwardians, both with a game in hand, visit relegation threatened Eastbourne, who were beaten 3-1 at Broadbridge Heath before Christmas. Horsham Ladies are back in action tomorrow with a visit to Woking.

U13 Hawks are Sussex Champions Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor The Horsham Hawks have secured the U13 Sussex League title in style with a convincing victory over the Haywards Heath Golden Eagles. The Hawks started well with Fin Bennett and Antonio Lozzi combining to score the game’s first eight points for an early advantage. Six straight points courtesy of Miguel Venturini in the final two minutes of the opening quarter extended Horsham’s lead to 26-8. With Josh Lea-Clayton forced to leave the game with an injury the Hawks team adapted quickly and contin-
ued to apply pressure on the Eagles. Strong rebounding and ten second quarter points from Josh Tavolieri gave the Hawks a 41-14 lead at halftime. An explosive 32-3 third quarter saw Horsham dominate with quick and unselfish team basketball exploiting gaps in the Eagles defence. The Hawks scored seventeen unanswered points with scores from Meghan Stevens, Amy Willcox, Charlotte Willcox and Venturini while Bennett sank a long range three pointer to make the score 7317. The Eagles fought back with determination in the final quarter
as both teams battled to a 10-10 stalemate before a late 10-2 Hawks surge, including a score from James Lowe gave the Hawks a 93-29 victory to secure the league title. Winning the league gives Horsham the number one seed and home advantage for their upcoming playoff semi-final against Worthing next month and the opportunity to compete for a second piece of silverware in the U13 Sussex Cup. Gault haunts YM with headed Hassocks winner Saturday February 20 - SCFL Premier Div. Hassocks 1 - 0 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA’s unbeaten start to 2016 came to an end with a 1-0 defeat away at in-form Hassocks, as former front man Phil Gault’s first half header proved enough to secure the hosts all three points. Peter Buckland’s side dominated large parts of a competitive encounter, but they found it difficult to break down a dogged Robins’ defence and failed to truly test home goalkeeper Alex Harris. Gault, who scored five goals in twelve games for YM during a three month spell
at Gorings Mead last season, peeled away from his marker and guided James Westlake’s in-swinging corner inside the far post midway through the first half. The visitors had a Dean Wright goal disallowed and a Martin Smith appeal for a penalty waved away after the break, but ultimately they couldn’t find a way past an organised and resolute Hassocks back line. The hosts’ success marked a club record eighth straight win, whilst YM remain fourth in the Premier Division standings following the defeat, but are now twelve points adrift of league leaders Horsham, who have two games in hand. YM manager Buckland commented: “I knew it was going to be a tough game because they were
coming into it off of the back of seven wins. Not seven undefeated, but seven back to back wins. Unequivocally, the best side on the day lost, but we gave away a very cheap goal and that’s what I’m really angry with. If we had defended properly, the worst we would have come away from here with was a 0-0 draw, and that wouldn’t have been so bad. We did deserve something out of the game. I’ve stood in these dugouts for thirty-odd years and sometimes you just know that things aren’t going your way and you’ve got to make it happen.” YM Team: Fox, Carden, Gathern, Burgess, Evans, Hibbert, Dugdale, Gedling, Brown, N. Pulborough suffer rare home defeat Saturday February 20 – London 3 South East Pulborough 0 - 24 Heathfield & Waldron Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter Pulbororough’s undoing at the hands of league leaders Heathfield & Waldron was only their second upset of the season at Freelands, but they accepted that they were well beaten by a stronger side. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “We didn’t play badly but they were a class above, very well drilled and their big heavy pack out-gunned us. We were missing some of our bigger forward
runners, which didn’t help.” The visitors led 14 nil at the break with two converted tries and then crossed the line again twice in the second half without kicking over. Tomorrow (Saturday February 27) in a rearrangement of a postponed game Boro, now 7th, travel to Burgess Hill, second from bottom, Clayton adding: “We’re hoping for a bonus point win there! After that we’ve got a tough run in, our last five games all being against teams currently above us - but there are two home fixtures and Gillingham Anchorians, Park House and Folkestone are only just ahead in the league so we’re aiming for a fifth in the table finish.”

Nine man YM grateful for Schaaf’s hat-trick Tuesday February 23 - SCFL Premier Div Littlehampton Town 3 – 4 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – Football Reporter Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland hailed a superb Sam Schaaf hat-trick as the striker helped nine-man YM battle to a 4-3 Premier Division win away at
Littlehampton Town on Tuesday evening. Schaaf opened the scoring after just eight minutes, but the hosts levelled through midfielder Dan Kempson shortly after the quarter hour mark. Schaaf doubled his tally for the evening to make it 2-1 midway through the half, before Golds player manager George Gaskin equalised five minutes later. YM captain Ash Dugdale was then shown a straight red card for a two
footed tackle on Dean Janman moments before the break, although the away side still found time to restore their lead through Phil Johnson four minutes into added time at the end of the first period. Buckland’s side were forced to face the final quarter of the game with nine men as Dave Brown was also shown a straight red for a tackle on Gaskin, who picked himself up from the challenge to level the scores once more six minutes later.
But ninety seconds after conceding, YM poked their noses back in front for the final time as a superb solo run from Schaaf saw the striker complete his hat-trick and make it 4-3. Boss Buckland commented: “That makes up for Saturday’s disappointment. The result has livened us up again. It is probably one of my proudest moments in my time as manager at YM to be honest. It is that good a feeling. Fair play to
the lads! How can you grumble at a gutsy performance like that. To a man they were brilliant. It was a fantastic performance all round. It was Sam’s best performance in a YM shirt and I knew it was coming, that’s why I tormented him in the last game and just let him off the leash tonight.” YM Team: Fox, Carden, Gathern, Burgess, Evans, Hibbert, Dugdale (s’off 44) Gedling, Brown (s’off 70) Schaaf (Donaldson 85), Johnson

Football Dave Snith – Sports Editor Given that Horsham came away from the reverse fixture back in September with a 0-11 win and that the two sides now sit at opposite ends of the table – St Francis still with no points and a negative goal difference of 170 - another double figure Horsham tally could have been expected. However since the appointment of former Barnet FC’s Head of Academy Joe Monks as manager a number of youth players have come over from his old club to give Rangers a different looking team to that which has been unceremoniously trounced by all comers so far this season. In contrast to recent matches Horsham started lethargically and failed to get into any meaningful passages of play. A few half chances fell the way of Dodd, Smith, Archibald and Storrie but there was not the cutting edge to the play that has been seen of late. At the other end Rangers had a couple of good opportunities, one needing Charlie Farmer to make a crucial challenge to prevent the visitors taking a most unlikely lead. It was then with some
Evan Archibald scored Horsham’s fourth goal relief that just on the half hour Horsham were awarded a penalty when Archibald was brought down by Rangers ‘keeper Rudwick; earning the visiting stopper a yellow card. Joe Shelley declined the opportunity to do a ‘Lionel Messi’ and instead hammered the ball at full force into the roof of the net. The penalty was all that separated the sides at the break, a situation that would have given Rangers a much needed and rare confidence boost. Sadly for the visitors any hopes

of building on the first half performance and pulling off a major shock was crushed within just five minutes of the restart when referee Philp awarded another penalty after Farmer was hauled to the ground. This time Shelley declined the ‘hammer it home’ tactic and although still not quite in the style Messi he cleverly wrong footed Rudwick and rolled the ball into the net. Despite the recent addition of new blood Rangers still lack quality
and their defensive frailties showed again when on sixty-eight minutes Pamment’s corner went unchallenged through to Farmer at the far post who simply allowed the ball to hit his chest and go in for a three goal lead. The early confidence had now been knocked out of the visitors and they looked a well beaten side when ten minutes later Horsham hit a fourth. Shelley held the ball up in the area before setting up Archibald for a simple shot past Rudwick. There was still time for a
fifth when from another poorly defended corner Dodd back flicked a header into the net. The win, coupled with Eastbourne Town’s surprise 1-0 defeat at Littlehampton, has given Horsham a five point lead at the top of the table; the two-horse title race may just have become a one-horse race. Horsham Team: Williams, Duncan, Storrie, Hunt, Knee, Farmer, Shelley, Archibald, Dodd, Smith, Boswell. Subs: Atkinson, Lewis, Pamment, Keehan, Jones.

rows travelled down to Worthing for a cup game. Sparrows dominated the first half with ‘keeper Ella S having very little to do but the balance of play was not reflected in the score and it remained 0-0 at the break. The second half was a lot tighter with the home team coming more into the game, however the outcome was the same, stalemate at 0-0. The vital breakthrough came with 5 minutes of extra time remaining when Abigail scored her first ever goal for the club to take Sparrows into the semi-finals. U12 Chesworth Rovers 2 - 1 U12 Crawley Utd In what was a vital match for both sides Chesworth’s victory has left them one win away from being
crowned league champions. Substitute ‘keeper Callum Palmer had to be at his very best to keep Crawley at bay from the off as both sides went on the attack. Despite both sides going for the win the score remained goalless at the break. After the restart ‘keeper Callum again pulled of some great saves before finally Josh Hayes gave Chesworth the lead. Following a corner Crawley equalised but with 5 minutes remaining Seb crossed for Fletch who calmly hit the winner. As Crawley battled in vain for another equaliser MoM Callum was called upon once again to pull off some great saves to give Chesworth the 3 points.
Sparrows put in a superb team performance in their first league game since November. Hugh scored the goal of the season with a curler from the lefthand edge of the box before Lower Beeding & Handcross scored direct from a free kick. Sparrows deservedly took the lead early in the second half with a goal from Ollie. Dan put in a great cross to set up Liam for the third. Lower Beeding pulled one back before Ollie finished the scoring to make it 2 – 4 to Sparrows. MoM Liam. U14 Worthing Girls 0 - 1U14 Horsham Sparrows Girls In their first game of 2016 Spar-
