Cocaine driver caught driving son to school

A Horsham mother was caught driving her son to school while under the influence of cocaine. Her case has been publicised by police to highlight the dangers of drugs, on the first anniversary of

the new drug-driving law. Between March 2015 and February 29, officers made a total of 295 drug-driving related arrests in Sussex. The vast majority of these, 222, were for driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit. Kelly Keating was arrested after the Alfa Romeo she was driving narrowly avoided colliding with other vehicles, including a police

car, on the A23 at Pyecombe. Police say Keating, who was driving her nine-year-old son to school, was also witnessed by an officer swerving between lanes and careering into a grass bank, causing a tyre to burst, before turning sharply into Pyecombe service station. A drug wipe was carried out and the 44-year-old, of Kennedy Road in Horsham, tested positive for cocaine.

serious or even a fatal collision. “But there’s also a knock-on effect - a conviction is likely to increase the cost of your car insurance, you could lose your job and you could have difficulty travelling to other countries. Above all, drugdriving is not a risk worth taking. “We have a duty and a commitment to keep the roads in Sussex safe, and as such we take a zero tolerance approach to drug-driving. Anyone caught committing the offence will be dealt with accordingly.” Under the new law, it is an offence to drive while over the prescribed limit of illegal drugs. But motorists are also liable to criminal proceedings if they are caught driving while over the prescribed limit of legal drugs. Any individual convicted of drugdriving faces a minimum 12-month disqualification, an unlimited fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record. In addition, information about a drug-driving conviction will remain on your licence for 11 years. The penalty for causing death by dangerous driving under the influence of drugs is up to 14 years in prison. Later she pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates Court to driving with 57mg of benzoylecgonine per litre of blood in her system. The legal limit is 50mg. She was disqualified from driving for 30 months, and ordered to pay a £150 criminal courts charge, a £110 fine, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. In March 2015 the Government approved prescribed limits for a number of legal and illegal drugs for which motorists can be tested against. This makes it a criminal offence to drive if you have certain controlled drugs above a specific limit in your blood. Since February last year, police have also had a new tool at their disposal to crackdown on drugdrivers. The roadside Drug Wipe testing kit, as used on Keating, takes a swab from the motorist and can detect cocaine or cannabis use within 10 minutes. Officers, working in connection with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, are now reminding drivers of the dangers associated with drug-driving and the impact of such actions. Sergeant Phil Badman, of the Surrey and Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “The consequences of drug-driving can be lethal. Substances - both legal and illegal - can seriously impair your ability to drive, which could cause a

Anger over shortage of new services A resident says councils have failed to ensure vital services are provided to serve families in new homes. Alex Ross says the situation means that the Broadbridge Heath and Wickhurst Green developments now risk what he calls “negative impacts” on the local community. According to Mr Ross Freedom of Information inquiries and a review of the plan on housing have revealed that none of the key “infrastructure” developments promised have yet to be delivered, despite hundred s of homes being built. He points out that Horsham District Council’s “Masterplan” for development stated that it would have a “negative impact” on the local area if the additional services and infrastructure were not delivered. Mr Ross, from Braodbridge Heath, says local residents are now urging the Local Government Ombudsman and Horsham Council to look into the development to determine why the promises in the Masterplan have not been delivered. He points out that the 2008 Mas-

terplan committed the council and developers to building a new school, a GP surgery, a new village centre, a fire station, new leisure facilities, shuttle bus routes and to create an “exemplar development

None of the services promised have been delivered and the houses have nothing that makes them stand out as sustainable. for sustainable building.” He said: “None has been delivered and most remain unfunded.” The Land West of Horsham Plan outlined the need for additional primary school provision if housebuilding was to go ahead. But West Sussex County Council has now confirmed it has no budget with which to build the new Shelley School. He says the existing primary school in Broadbridge Heath has no spare

places in any year group, meaning there is no local primary provision for families moving into Wickhurst Green. As a result, local children in Broadbridge Heath will now have to travel into Horsham or as far as Rudgwick school.* They include this breakdown by Mr Ross. The plan promises: A new neighbourhood centre and community facilities to include parish office and shops. None have been built. A new fire station constructed east of the A24. West Sussex confirms there are no such plans or funding. A medical centre for a five doctor practice. No plans or funding exist at this time. Significant financial contributions to be sought from the development towards the enhancement of stategic sports and leisure facilities. There is no direct contribution being made to the leisure centre. A development which is exemplar in terms of the use of sustainable construction techniques and renewable and low carbon energy supply. None of the homes was constructed with re-

newable energy, waste-water recycling or highly sustainable/ recycled materials Mr Ross said: “This was a controversial development, with up to 1000 houses on green field sites. The council worked hard to present a persuade residents that it would be an exemplar development, with no negative impact on the local area. “The opposite is true. None of the services promised have been delivered and the houses have nothing that makes them stand out as sustainable. The failure to deliver the promised school, GP surgery, public transport and community facilities means the area now has thousands of new residents, with no additional services. “ “It raises serious questions about the council’s ability to manage such a project and there should be an investigation to determine whether the failure to deliver the services was down to incompetence, or if the public was misled in the marketing of this development.” See page three for council responses.

Alex loses his fight with cancer

The late Alex Cloke

The man who played a key role in setting up Horsham Y Centre has died. Alex Cloke passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with cancer. He was at home with his family. Alex, 79, whose home town was Horsham, was an engineer and designer by profession but in 1983 he responded to an advertisement entitled ‘Wanted - Christian Businessman’. He joined the YMCA as head of the commercial division of the National Council, with responsibility for its hotels, outdoor residential centres, the development of hostels and the running of

Thief sought after Steyning cars stolen Police are investigating after cars were stolen from outside homes in Steyning and Goring-by-Sea on the same night. They believe the same person might be responsible for both thefts. A house in The Strand, Goringby-Sea, was broken into sometime between 9pm on February 21 and 5am on February 22, while the owners were asleep upstairs. Car keys were taken from the kitchen and a blue 2-door Audi S3 with distinctive chrome roof rails was stolen from the driveway. Police are linking this to the theft of a black VW Golf Estate from outside an address in Coxham Lane, Steyning between 3pm on February 21 and 11am on Monday February 22. Priority Crime Team Investigator Tom Carpenter said: “Both vehicles are yet to be recovered and it is possible they may have been parked or abandoned locally. “We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen these vehicles or anything suspicious during these times in the Steyning and Goring areas”. Anyone with information can email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting reference 90 of 22/02. its work with the armed forces in Germany and Cyprus. After five years at National Council and London Central he was appointed Chief Executive of Guildford YMCA. His first task was to oversee the completion and opening of a new supported housing project in Guildford. His aim was to create a home with hotel standards and to give the young people of Guildford a secure environment as a stepping-stone to independence. Having retired, Alex had not finished with the YMCA, and subsequently helped design and build another supported housing project

in his home town of Horsham. Horsham Y Centre, now part of YMCA DownsLink Group, opened in 2005. Alex was born on July 19 1936. He was a devoted husband to wife Pat, a loving father to Libby and Sandra and had three grandchildren Paul, Harry and Ed. Peter McMahon, Trustee of YMCA DownsLink Group said, “Alex was the inspiration that enabled Horsham YMCA to obtain sufficient funds from both Local government and the Housing Corporation and also raise a variety of donations from the local church community to assist in financing the venture. Horsham Y Centre has since gone from strength to strength.” YMCA DownsLink Group is a registered charity working across Sussex and Surrey providing a range of services to children, young people and families with a particular focus on the needs of young people who find themselves on the fringes of society and need support. The charity’s work covers a wide range of areas including accommodation, general advice, sexual exploitation, mental health, housing advice, young offenders, youth clubs, childcare, counselling, mentoring, alternative education and apprenticeships. Each year the charity supports over 10,000 people operating from centres in Brighton & Hove, Guildford, Horsham, Crawley, Lewes and Worthing. To find out more, please visit www.ymcadlg.org

Councils respond to housing claims Councils have responded to complaints over the way housing developments at Broadbridge Heath have been handled (see page 2 story). Answering claims that the facilities provided did not meet with plans a West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “We would like to reassure residents that options for a new school on the Broadbridge Heath development are still being explored and we are also working with the headteacher at Shelley Primary School in relation to the area’s growing population. “This includes the potential for increasing the school’s current Published Admission Number and meeting with the Department for Education to discuss the possibility of an academy. We will continue to work with the local residents and authorities to ensure there are sufficient school places available for children in the area. “A separate decision was made regarding the relocation of the fire station. This is not a decision made lightly and unfortunately relocating to the new Broadbridge Heath development site did not fulfil some of the essential criteria required for a new fire station. This includes the need for suitable access for our Fire Service vehicles and the need to maintain our excellent ‘on call’ operational staff.” A Horsham District Council spokesperson said: “Around half of the homes allocated for development on the west of Horsham have been built or are under construction, all of which meet the national sustainable construction require-

ments. These homes have been provided alongside new roads, play areas, open space and improvements to public footpaths and bridleway. The remainder of the homes will be built together with more open space, allotments, a BMX track and a community hall and play pitches on land south of Hills Farm Lane. A new neighbourhood centre in Broadbridge Heath is planned and expected to be built in 2017. It will include a mini-supermarket, four small shop units, a nursery and a dedicated Parish Council Office. The council added that in addition, residents old and new will benefit from the recently agreed a £12.3m investment by Horsham District Council for the replacement of Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre.” It said provision was also made in the plans for the neighbourhood centre for a GP’s surgery. However, the Clinical Commissioning Group has confirmed that it has not got the funding at present to provide a new doctors surgery in this location, but is looking at how it can best meet the primary health care needs for the whole town. The council said that as part of the development, land owned by West Sussex County Council was identified as a site for a new fire station and access has been provided from the new junction on the A24. In addition, the developers are required to provide land for a new primary school. The district said that responsibility for progressing these two aspects of the masterplan rests with West Sussex County Council.

Link to two Horsham attacks A robbery and an attempted robbery in Horsham might be linked, detectives believe. Soon after 4pm on Monday of last week a 53-year-old man from Billingshurst was sitting on a bench near the skate park, which is located at the end of an alley running between the fire station and Horsham Hospital from Hurst Road. He was confronted by a man armed with what was described as “some sort of baton” who demanded that he hand over his watch and threatened to harm him. The attacker kicked his victim but caused no injury and then ran off, first in the direction of the pond in Horsham Park but then towards the railway station. At 4.30pm a 17-year-old student had her bag stolen after being confronted by a man in the alley near the fire station. She was pushed into a hedge and a handbag containing cash, college work and personal possessions was grabbed by her attacker. He then ran off via Hurst Road in the direction of the railway station. A train that was due to leave was

delayed while a search was made for the suspect, but he was not found. Detective Constable Adam Tidy said: “Both these incidents occurred in a busy area in daylight, and so there is a good chance that other people may have seen what occurred or noticed the suspect running away. “We believe the incidents are linked and may have been perpetrated by the same suspect, a man of Middle Eastern appearance, in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a dark coloured hooded anorak and jogging bottoms and with a camouflagepatterned bandana over his face. “One victim also described him as being 5’11”, slim, with short black curly hair and carrying a bright yellow bag.” Anyone with information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn. police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 962 of 29/02 (attempted robbery) or 971 of 29/02 (robbery) Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 ( www.crimestoppersuk.org).

Bear on chair wins kids hearts Children in Horsham district were among youngsters in West Sussex who chose their picture book of the year. Ross Collins wrote ‘There’s A Bear On My Chair’which won West Sussex Children’s Picture Book Award: Picture Books To Shout About 2015/16. The lively, humorous story about a mouse and a bear learning to share a chair captured the imagination of children in 32 primary schools across West Sussex. There was a shortlist of four titles to choose from, but the twist in the tail from the extremely grumpy mouse had the pupils on the edge of their seats. David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries, said: “Reading for enjoyment is key to

developing literacy and life skills for the future. “Our school pupils have had great fun sharing and talking about the books on the shortlist.” The announcement comes on World Book Day, a designated day which celebrates authors, illustrators, books and reading in general. Mr Barling added: “The Schools Library Service has worked in partnership with Public Libraries to encourage children to borrow more stories that they can share with their families. “Our libraries continue to play a vital role across each community in West Sussex.” To find out more about libraries visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/libraries. Nearly £2000 is a lot of money for a haircut, but friends of Arabella Mason were happy to pay it. The pals at Farlington School in Horsham were among supporters who paid Arabella to have her cherished locks lopped for charity. Their donations meant Arabella, seven, raised over £1850 for the charity Little Princess Trust by pledging to donate her hair. The trust makes wigs for children with cancer and other illnesses. The charity, which was set up in 2006, has given away more than 4,000 free wigs. Each wig costs the charity £350 to make, so Arabella’s efforts will make a significant difference to a number of children. The haircut took place in Farling-

Children across the district bring books to life Young readers in Horsham district took their favourite characters off the page and into their classroom to celebrate World Book Day. The children transformed themselves into pirates, space commanders, adventurers, animals, and nursery rhyme favourites at schools and playgroups as part of the UNESCO global celebration of books and reading, marked in more than 100 countries all over the world. Now in its 19th year the day promotes the appreciation of reading by children, which helps their education and broadens their horizons. Many schools, including those nurseries and secondary schools that were specially registered to

participate, were sent packs of book tokens and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs containing ideas and activities. Busy parents spend hours making costumes for the youngsters to show off before their pals, including some that were dazzlingly colourful and others that were stunningly inventive. Others paid for costumes, while a few who left it to the last minute still managed to deliver the goods by adapting whatever was too hand. All in all it was day for day when thousands of children brought their books heroes and heroines to life and found that words were fun.

Forest School pupil finds Great, Great Crime cash helps gardeners Grandfather’s grave during Battlefield 35 year 8 boys from The Forest School along with 4 teachers spent two days in Ypres, Belgium and The Somme in France. The tour was part of their studies about the First World War. Forest School states that it is important that history enables pupils to make links with the past. Trips like the one in January, to Ypres, provide a great opportunity for the boys to connect with those young men from Horsham, who gave their lives for this country, enabling pupils to see the relevance of those years and of what those young men did. During the trip, the group sought out one of the pupils’ Great, Great Grandfather, who died in the Somme Offensive 100 years ago this year. Harrison Konieczny’s Great, Great Grandfather was called David Brooker. He was a 45 year old gunner from Horsham in the Royal Field Artillery. He died on August 9,1916, during the Battle of the Somme. His grave was discovered at the small Ovilliers Military Cemetery on the Somme. It seems that he, along with two of his comrades, were killed together, after being spotted by German observations,

and specifically targeted because they were manning the machine guns. The three soldiers have been laid to rest together. Harrison and the rest of the group paid a visit to his grave and Harrison left a cross with an inscription on, to remember his Great, Great Grandfather. Mrs Konieczny was very pleased that Harrison got to visit his Great, Great Grandfather and commented: “Harrison had a fantastic time and has come back with many stories which he has already passed on to friends and family. It’s been lovely to see him so engaged with history, especially the links to his family. Taking him to see the grave of one his Great Great Grandads was very kind and we now have photos in the family that havwe not been seen before.” A representative of the school also commented: “Making visits like this, helps the boys feel the significance of the First World War and all the sites we visited, over the two days, really helped them understand this conflict, its implications and consequences, not only for Horsham, but for Britain and the wider world.”

Horsham Police has given £150 to Ellens Green and Rudgwick Gardening Association for a gazebo to be used at its summer show and other events. Association chairman Michael Clarke said: “The association was formed in 1945 and has more than 200 members in Rudgwick and Ellens Green, and some wider afield. We hold three shows a year and our summer show is particularly popular. The purchase of some large gazebos will help us to keep hire costs down.”

The donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund made up of money received by the police from property confiscated by order of the court and then sold. Police Community Support Officer Tracy Field said: “I am really pleased that we have been able to donate to such a popular community organisation. The annual shows held by the association are popular village events that help bring local people together and have fun.”

Calico and Cake coming soon

Autumn- Causeway, Gaynor

Meadow, Jean Hartley

An unusual exhibition featuring cake-eating craft workers is coming to Horsham Museum. The Museum said: “Delightful, delicious, mouth-watering cake… most of us enjoy a scrumptious slice with a cup of steaming tea. But, for ten local, creative ladies, they don’t just have their cake and eat it: they can also ‘sew a cake’! “Local textile group ‘Calico and Cake’ will be showing its wonderful and diverse work in a craft exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum that is running from March 11 to May 7. “The group ‘Calico and Cake’, so named due to its long tradition in eating cake whenever members meet, has been crafting unique pieces of work for nine years. “Inspired from a variety of sources, such as sketches, photographs, and of course, cake, the group use an eclectic mix of multi-

media techniques to produce some unusual and stunning two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork; for instance, be astonished by the subtle and intricate stitchwork which crafts the stormy beach in ‘Boat Wreck’ and be wowed by the startling colours in ‘Poppy’. “Their work is both experimental and innovative. To produce their inspirational textured images, textiles are selected of differing types and thicknesses, and various paints and dyes embellish their designs. “The ladies use a variety of creative techniques, such as layering and burning fabrics together, the final images enhanced by stitching with machine and hand embroidery. Each craftswoman works in her own unique style, and they take it in turns to supply the muchcoveted inspiration at the heart of the group - that is, cake – it seems like they have it all sewn up!

“Though the ladies at ‘Calico and Cake’ have individual qualifications in art and textiles, they have no formal tutor at their meetings. Instead they prefer to share their ideas in friendly, cake-inspired fortnightly meetings. A number of them have already exhibited their stunning work at galleries in East Grinstead, Chichester and Horsham. “In the spirit of their meetings, they will also be serving their celebrated cake on Saturday March 12 and Saturday April 2, between 10am and noon. And, do keep an eye out for their ‘sewn cakes’ in the museum shop window.” Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10-5, admission free. The Museum will be open on Good Friday and Easter Monday but closed on other public holidays.

Make sure you have enough Easter medication Doctors are calling for people to check their medication before Easter and make sure they have enough repeat prescriptions to last over the bank holiday weekend. The call is being made to relieve pressure on out- of- hours doctors dealing with emergencies. This year Easter is from Good Friday March 26 to Easter Monday March 28 and practices will not reopen until March 29. Over Christmas 2015 there was a 66 per cent increase in repeat prescription re-

quests compared to Christmas 2014. Latest figures continue to show that one in four calls to the urgent GP out of hours service on a Saturday is due to people running out of routine medication, and this Easter the local NHS wants to make sure that the service is available for those that urgently need it. Because of the bank holiday weekend there will be a four day period when GP practices will be unavailable, and so people are being warned to check their medications and make sure they have enough to last over this time. People who do have enough medication are being urged to think ahead and contact their GP practice or local pharmacy to order more. Dr Mark Reynolds, Medical Director for the out of hours GP service, IC24, said: “Out of hours doctors are available for people who need urgent medical help and treatment; the service is not designed for more routine problems like repeat prescrip-

tions. “At the moment, the NHS 111 phone lines are busy at the weekend with people who need repeat prescriptions, with hundreds of people calling for medicines that they have run out of. “We want to do all we can to make sure that the right teams are available when you really need NHS help, and we can make sure you get the support you need.” “As we approach a four day period when your normal GP practice will not be available, we want to make sure that NHS services are available for people who need help, and you don’t have to wait any longer than necessary if you are trying to get an appointment with an out of hours doctor. “With this in mind, if you do need regular medicines please plan ahead and think about your repeat prescriptions this week. “If you don’t have enough, please speak to your GP practice or local pharmacist and make sure you can get what you need.” If you do need help or advice over Easter you can get free, expert, quick information from your local pharmacies. New brief for next council chairman Barrister Christian Mitchell has a new brief after being confirmed as the next chairman of Horsham District Council. He will perform the role for the civic year 2016-17 after being chosen at a full meeting of the district council. Cllr Mitchell, who has served as vice-chairman of Horsham District Council since May 2015, is set to take over from current chairman Tricia Youtan in May, taking up the council’s top ceremonial role. Mr Mitchell is deputy chairman, political, of Horsham Conservative Association and is a district councillor for Holbrook West. He has represented Holbrook West, the area where he grew up, since he was elected in 2003. £10,000 target at Horsham’s Piazza Italia Easter Children with all kinds of needs will benefit from Easter’s Horsham Piazza Italia weekend. To mark the 10th anniversary each of the three days will be a fund-raiser for a different children’s charity. Arvin wins prize taking out fear Dentist Arvin Mirzadeh knows the drill when it comes to impressing customers. They liked his approach so much they successfully nominated him for a customer service award. Now Arvin, practice principal and dental surgeon of Pulborough’s Vitality surgery, is the third winner of the Sussex Service Stars Awards. Arvin was nominated for the award by his client Penny Wilson. Penny had previously been very nervous about visiting the dentist, often cancelling at the last minute due to her phobia. She found Arvin to be especially good with nervous patients and was reassured that the practice offers sedation if required. Penny said: “I chose to nominate

Arvin at Vitality as before I became a patient of his I’d always been terrified of going to the dentist. I first visited Vitality when I discovered they offered sedation which I felt I needed just to get me through the sheer terror! However, after a few visits, Arvin made me feel so comfortable and at ease that I no longer needed the sedation. He always takes the time to listen and explain procedures thoroughly, and has the patience of a saint!” Arvin said: “I couldn’t believe it when I was told I’d won this competition. I’m really happy to have helped Penny so much with her nerves at the dentist and always make my patients a priority, whatever their needs. I’d like to thank

Penny for her kind words and Evonprint for the lovely hamper. Sussex based print, design and marketing specialist Evonprint runs the contest. The firm’s managing director Steve Rowland said: “Congratulations to Arvin, who is clearly a deserving winner and thank you to Penny for making time to nominate him. We believe that excellent customer service in all types of businesses is extremely important. It’s very easy to judge poor service but those who strive to go the extra mile can often be overlooked which is why we enjoy rewarding those in the local community who deserve recognition.”

April deadline for kids action plan Tighter supervision of the way help for children is provided in West Sussex is one improvement suggested as an April Government deadline nears. The role of managers carefully overseeing casework assessments, plans and reviews is one of the items listed for the West Sussex Children and Young People’s Services Select Committee. It comes after an Ofsted inspection that judged that the county’s services needed improvement. The inspection found that despite children’s services needing to improve in some areas, progress is being made across the overall service and children are safe and secure. West Sussex County Council is

one of 45 councils who received this rating across the country. Only 17 councils have been judged to be ‘good’ and the remaining 19 were graded as ‘inadequate’. The review includes • Addressing the high number of care leavers who are not in employment, education or training • Discontinuing the use of bed and breakfast accommodation for care leavers • Strengthen the quality of child protection decision-making • Managers carefully overseeing casework assessments, plans and reviews An action plan needs to be submitted to the Secretary of State by April 17.

Patients benefit from pooled resources New push on recycling Residents of Horsham district are being encouraged to recycle more in a new push. Horsham district’s current recycling rate for 2015 is about 45%, one of the highest in West Sussex. But Horsham District Council says it is keen to improve on this with a new campaign to encourage residents to recycle more items and to improve the quality of their recycling. Throughout March residents are urged to look out for a leaflet which will be sent by the council to every household, outlining what can and cannot be recycled. Cabinet Member for Waste, Recycling and Cleansing Cllr Roy Cornell said: “I would like to thank the residents of Horsham for their great achievement in recycling 45% of their waste prod-

Patients living with musculoskeletal conditions have improved facilities at Horsham Hospital’s hydrotherapy pool after its refurbishment. The work has taken several months and patients are now being booked in when the facility is needed. The pool is run as a vital part of services provided by what is known as the Sussex Musculoskeletal Partnership. The hydrotherapy reception area, changing rooms and washrooms have already undergone refurbishment and some other minor improvements will take place in the coming months. The new Sussex Musculoskeletal Partnership patient and office space at Horsham Hospital is on target to be ready and open by June

2016. An open day is planned for patients in the summer where staff will provide information about how patients can self-manage some of the most common musculoskeletal conditions, such as lower back pain. The partnership is made up of Brighton and Hove Integrated Care Service , The Horder Centre, Sussex Community NHS Trust and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. All organisations in the Partnership are NHS trusts, not for profit social enterprises or charities. The partnership is the local NHS organisation responsible for treating patients with bone, joint and muscular problems including rheumatism, arthritis and chronic pain. The service aims to improve the quality of care for patients with

musculoskeletal conditions. This is the second year of a five year programme of transformation change led by the partnership. In order for the service to deliver this change, it is necessary for them to have more space to bring in a whole team of health professionals which will include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, osteopaths, occupational therapists, psychologists and podiatrists, and to do all this in an environment which provides a better experience for patients.

ucts. There has also been an 85% reduction in recyclable materials being sent to landfill due to contamination. You can now recycle more items than ever before, with the introduction to the scheme in April last year of pots, tubs, trays and blister packs. With Easter just a few weeks away it’s important to remember that Easter egg packaging can now be recycled. But I would encourage you to improve the quality of your recycling by remembering to rinse items well to remove food and liquid leftovers – keeping recycling Clean, Dry and Loose is key.” Residents are also being encouraged to recycle items from all rooms around the house, not just those used in the kitchen.

He then spent four weeks in the summer holidays assisting Dr Savina and her group, researching Cryogels and their use in water purification. Once he had completed his four weeks of working in a cutting edge research lab, Hans wrote a technical report on his findings and presented a poster of his research at a symposium at the University of Brighton. Pets Corner donates £6,000 to help launch new children’s charity

A new charity, which has been set up to help fund home adaptations for disabled children, has recently launched with the help of a £6,000 donation from ethical

pet retailer, Pets Corner, with a further pledge from the company to donate £5,000 per year. Sullivan’s Heroes is the result of months of work by Richard Smith

– a long term supplier for Pets Corner - and his wife Fiona. During the process of adapting their own property for their disabled son, Sullivan, they discovered there was little in the way of financial assistance for families and their disabled children, who required the necessary adjustments to live comfortably and safely in their homes. Tragically, after the family raised 90% of the costs through various fundraising initiatives, which inspired them to set up the charity, Sullivan passed away in January 2015, shortly before the work on their home was completed. Since then, it has been his parents’ mission to build brighter futures for other families in their son’s memory, through the vital fundraising work of Sullivan’s Heroes. Commenting on the donation from Pets Corner, Richard Smith said: “It has taken us over 18 months to get through, over and around all the hurdles in order

to get Sullivan’s Heroes off the ground. We are absolutely delighted that we have now been able to realise this incredibly important resource in our son’s memory for families who, like us, have nowhere

I am delighted that Pets Corner is able to contribute towards the work Sullivan’s Heroes is doing ahelp make a difference.... to turn. We would like to thank Pets Corner for their generous donation, which will go towards helping families in the future. “We don’t have the skills to save lives, but we certainly have the ability to change lives and that is

what we are setting out to do, just like the many people who have helped us as parents and Sullivan throughout his life.” Managing Director at Pets Corner Dean Richmond added: “It is particularly poignant that Sullivan was the son of one of our friends, and long term suppliers, Richard. I have worked with Richard for a number of years and I have seen first-hand the effort and determination he and his wife Fiona have put in to the charity, not only fundraising to make things better for their own family, but for the lives of others. “I am delighted that Pets Corner is able to contribute towards the work Sullivan’s Heroes is doing and to help make a difference to families in a similar position across the UK.” The £6,000 donated by Pets Corner will help provide ongoing financial grants for disabled children and their families.

Each class is adapted to suit those attending, taking your needs, feelings and preferences into careful consideration. Our classes are a combination of Hatha, Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga that creates an ideal yoga class that suits modern lifestyle: •Hatha Yoga helps to restore mind and body through asanas (postures, physical exercises), pranayama (controlled breathing), meditation and relaxation. •Vinyasa Flow Yoga is athletic in nature, it means ‘to move with the breath.’ •Yin Yoga complements the two above. While muscular (yang) and dynamic styles of yoga emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contraction of muscles, Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. One hour morning and evening classes evolve through the following sequence: •Opening and warming sequence - breath awareness, building heat. •Standing and dynamic sequence - strength building, work to maximum heat and intensity. •Floor sequence and cool down - deep stretches, counter poses, inversions, relaxation and meditation. Yoga Sessions: •Monday 9:30am - 10:30am •Thursday 6:00pm - 7:00pm Yoga Prices: •£6 per session •£30 for six week course No experience is required. A Hat-trick of awards for GTR at National Rail Business awards Local companies

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) won in three categories at the prestigious Rail Business Awards ceremony, held last month, and was highly commended in another. The wins were in the Safety and Security Excellence, Rolling Stock Excellence and Customer Information & Service Excellence categories, with the commendation coming in the Corporate Communications category. Charles Horton, GTR’s CEO, said: “At GTR, we are committed to improving the passenger experience. These awards demonstrate the improvements we have put

in place to make travelling with us safer, as well as increasingly comfortable and accessible for all. There are many great projects and activities underway, to further improve services for customers across our business, and it’s fantastic to see some of the brightest and best of these being recognised by our industry colleagues.” GTR’s wins were in the following categories: Safety and Security Excellence Southern’s Rail Neighbourhood Officer (RNO) team won the Safety and Security Excellence award. This recognises the hard work all of the individuals undertake to help keep

passengers safe when travelling. Since 2009, the RNOs have patrolled over 20,000 trains, written up 2,700 Fare Evasion notices, contributed to 340 arrests and given out 37,075 Anti-Social Behaviour warnings. In the past year, the team has dealt with many issues, including anti-social behaviour and the difficult task of tackling tissue beggars. They have also organised a number of cycle surgeries with the British Transport Police and helped to deliver GTR’s unique GoLearn educational material, which focuses on safe and independent travel, to over 3,000 young people. Rolling Stock Excellence Thameslink’s newest train fleet Class 387/1 Electrostars - scooped the Rolling Stock Excellence award. This was a joint entry between GTR and the Department for Transport and the judges were equally impressed with the outstanding passenger facilities on-board these units, and the speed at which they were introduced. The introduction of the 116 new carriages has significantly improved the passenger experience on the Thameslink Route and added much needed capacity, whilst enabling the release of existing trains to support electrification programmes elsewhere on the rail network. These trains were completed alongside major depot infrastructure and training programmes, and against the backdrop

of two organisations merging. These trains are the blueprint for the new Class 387/2 Gatwick Express trains, the first of which entered service between Victoria and Gatwick on February 29. Customer Information and Service Excellence Southern’s ‘This Is Me’ campaign won the Customer Information and Service Excellence award. This work was introduced following an initial idea from Southern’s Customer Cabinet, a group of passengers and staff who get together to discuss and implement selfgenerated initiatives and customer suggestions. ‘This is Me’ was borne from feedback from passengers with access needs, and led to the creation of a series of posters, leaflets and videos. For Southern staff, this has become part of training and the team brief process. The material was also used to promote the assistance services Southern offers to passengers, with a resulting increase in the number of passengers booking assistance. ‘This is Me’ was also highly commended in the Corporate Communications category. Hassocks station was shortlisted in the Station Excellence category, recognising the new station building, lifts and comm nity run cycle facility.

Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed

– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. Another hugely enjoyable and successful Equinox Spring Beer and Cider festival took place at the Drill Hall in Horsham over the first weekend of March, organised by the North Sussex branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. The event featured all the local brewers and cider makers, plus a number of the new brewers that have opened in recent years, plus some sourced from further afield by our main Festival sponsor, Dark Star and their new pub the Anchor Tap recently opened in East Street in Horsham. Voting for Beer and Cider of the festival was as close as ever, with 45 of the 49 beers getting votes, and lots of great feedback on the high quality of the beers. Light Beer of the festival went to Sixpenny IPA from Dorset, with Long Arm’s Shadow Wolf from Ealing just holding off two great dark beers from last year’s local winner, Kissingate, for Dark Beer of the festival. The organisers are looking forward to their trips to Salisbury and the Ealing Park Tavern to present the awards. We also have a new Cider of the festival, with Village Green’s Sussex Dry from Turners Hill just pip-

ping last year’s winner Wobblegate Pink from Bolney. Our festival charity this year was the Samaritans Horsham and Crawley branch, and we are delighted that donations of money, beer tokens and unwanted glasses raised just over £600. Their presence and support was greatly appreciated. Huge thank you to all the volunteers, musicians and sponsors, and particularly to Gareth of Beer Essentials and Sam at the Malt Shovel for their invaluable support with ticket sales, and to Rob at the Drill Hall for his help over the weekend. If anyone has any comments, or wants to get involved in CAMRA in North Sussex or future festivals, please contact us on camra. equinox@gmail.com. Our branch AGM is on Friday March 11th at the Lamb, Lambs Green from 7.30pm, with a social meeting on April 11th from 7.30pm at the Open Arms, the recently opened micro pub in Railway Approach, East Grinstead. The provisional date for 4th Spring Equinox festival is the first weekend of March 2017. We hope to see you there. Cheers from CAMRA North Sussex branch

‘Amazing’, ‘Incredible’, ‘I can’t believe they are school children’, When are they going on tour?’, Just some of the comments from the audience on the week of February 8-12, at The Forest School. The French revolution took over the Forest school hall, with over 70 pupils involved in the production of ‘Les Miserables’. An incredibly difficult and wonderful score was brought to life by the Forest School band, allowing the performers the opportunity to sing with a live orchestra. The stage was transformed with two large barricades moving into place, having been made by the Forest DT department. And

so the stage was set for the most moving night to ever hit the Forest school stage. Ben Whiteley (16) had the difficult task of ageing through 40 years to create the character of Jean Val Jean and through his outstanding delivery of ‘Bring him Home’ left many members of the audience in tears. The role of Javert was ferociously played by Max Patterson (16) who again amazed the audience with his rendition of ‘Stars’. Other stand out performances came from Lotti Wright (15) as Cossette, Alex Bell (16) as Marius, Ellie Melfi (14) as Eponine, Will Evans (15) as Enjolras, Fleur Brotherton

(16) as Fantine and Joe Crump (12) as Gavroche. The comic relief came from Joe Henderson (14) and Lucy Jallow (15) who had the audience in stitches with their performances as Mr and Mrs Thenardier. They were joined by a cast of 40 with pupils from both Forest and Millais. The entire cast, both principals and chorus, were so committed to their performances, that much of the audience felt that they had been watching a professional show. With over a year of preparation and a standing ovation every night, it is an experience that the cast, band, crew and staff will never, ever forget.

PETs POST

25

Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Have you microchipped your pet yet? abbi moon RSPCA

On 6th April, it becomes a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped and keep their details up to date. Microchipping your pet gives them the best chance of being identified and returned to you if they become lost or stolen. Many pets can be microchipped including cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets and horses. A tiny microchip is quickly and simply inserted under the animal’s skin, or in the neck for horses. This gives the pet their own unique code. The microchip can be scanned and matched to the owner’s contact details, which are kept on a database. Thousands of pets are lost every year and many are never reunited with their owners; microchipping can help to change that. While collars and tags can get caught or removed, microchipping identifies your pet permanently and effectively.

Microchipping is only effective if you keep your details up to date. If you move house or change your telephone number you must make sure that you tell the database you are registered with so that they have your up-to-date contact details. If your dog is microchipped you should have a confirmation letter or email including an ID or reference number as well as a microchip number. If you know which database your pet is registered on, you can check your details are upto-date by logging in online. Or, you can contact the database team over the phone. To find out if your dog is microchipped, or to find out the microchip number, take him along to your local vet and have him scanned. If your dog does have a chip you can search the number online to make sure all the information is up to date If your dog isn’t microchipped and/or registered on an approved database then you could be served with a notice ordering you to microchip your dog. You’ll have 21 days to do so or you may be liable to pay a £500 fine and could face

criminal prosecution. If your contact details change and you don’t update your details on the database, then you could also receive a notice and may be liable to pay a fine of £500. You can arrange for your local vet to microchip your dog, prices will vary however they’ll usually charge around £15. Any dog over the age of eight weeks will be legally required to be microchipped and registered to an approved database by 6 April 2016. It’s up to the breeder to microchip the dog and for each subsequent new owner to ensure the details have been changed and are up-todate. All dog breeders are responsible for ensuring puppies are microchipped before selling them. Puppies must be microchipped by the time they are eight-weeksold. Puppies cannot be sold until they’re eight weeks old. Breeders must also register their details online to be recorded against the microchip for the life of the dog. In these Regulations, a person is considered to be a ‘breeder’ if they are the owner of a dog which gives birth, whether or not they carry on a business as a breeder of dogs.

How to spot the signs of Cushing’s disease Cushing’s disease (hyperadrenocorticism) is the overproduction of the hormone cortisol by the adrenal glands that are located in the abdomen near the kidneys. Cushing’s disease occurs commonly in dogs, but is rare in cats. Most dogs with Cushing’s disease are about 6 years old or older. Cortisol affects the function of many organs in the body, so the signs of Cushing’s disease may be varied. Some of the more common signs include hair loss, pot-bellied appearance, increased appetite, and increased drinking and urination. Hair loss caused by Cushing’s disease occurs primarily on the body. The skin is not usually itchy as it is with other skin diseases. If you

pick up a fold of skin on a dog with Cushing’s disease, you may notice that the skin is thinner than normal and the pet may have fragile blood vessels and bruise easily. There are two types of Cushing’s disease that are treated differently. The most common form of Cushing’s disease is caused by the overproduction of a hormone by the pituitary gland in the brain that in turn controls the amount of cortisol produced by the adrenal glands. This is called pituitary-dependent Cushing’s. A small percentage of dogs with Cushing’s disease have a tumour of one of the adrenal glands which is called adrenal-dependent Cushing’s. There is no single test to diag-

nose Cushing’s disease. The history, physical exam, and results of initial blood and urine tests often provide a strong suspicion for the presence of Cushing’s disease. The large amount of cortisol in the body suppresses the immune system and allows the pet with Cushing’s disease to get bacterial infections. The most common location for infection is the bladder. Pets with Cushing’s disease may have a silent bladder infection meaning they don’t show signs of having the infection such as straining to urinate and a culture of the urine may be necessary to diagnose the infection. Ultrasound of the abdomen may show enlargement of both

adrenal glands in pets with pituitary-dependent Cushing’s or enlargement of just one of the adrenal glands in pets with an adrenal tumour. The adrenal glands are NOT always seen during an ultrasound exam in pets with Cushing’s. Specific tests for Cushing’s disease are performed to confirm the diagnosis and to determine the type of Cushing’s disease that is present, pituitary-dependent, or adrenaldependent. The treatment of the most common type of Cushing’s disease (pituitary-dependent) is lifelong oral medication. The most common drug used to treat Cushing’s disease is Trilostane Treatment of adrenal depend-

ent Cushing’s disease is by surgical removal of the cancerous adrenal gland. Adrenal gland tumours can spread to other parts of the body in which case all the cancer cannot be removed by surgery. Medical treatment may be given before surgery to reduce hormone levels before surgery. The prognosis for pituitarydependent Cushing’s disease with treatment is usually good. Some signs will disappear quickly and others gradually. Appetite and water consumption usually return to normal in a few weeks where as full return of the fur may take several months.

Bunny spa days at Arun Vets Pulborough Starting this Easter, Arun Veterinary Group would like to announce an exciting new offer at our Pulborough branch - Bunny spa days! These extra special short stays will allow you the peace of mind that your rabbit has had its full “MOT” in readiness for the spring season. The day involves bringing your rabbit to our Pulborough surgery in the morning with collection arranged at a convenient time, safe in the knowledge that they have been fully pampered and prepared for the spring season. For £30, your rabbit will stay with us for half a day, and enjoy: •A full groom •Nail clip

•Tooth check •Incisor trim (if required) •Weight assessment •Rear Guard application At this time of year as the weather is getting warmer the flies start to gather, reproduce and lay eggs in warm, moist environments. They commonly choose moist rabbit fur around a soiled bottom. The hatching maggots can cause horrendous damage to the skin and in serious cases the internal organs often resulting in lengthy hospital stays, long term medication and even in extreme cases, the need for euthanasia. You can help to combat fly strike by ensuring your rabbit is a sensible weight, has a clean and clipped bottom and has had a suit-

able fly killer/repellent applied. It is advisable to check your rabbit’s bottom at least every day – twice daily in the summer. The time it takes for fly eggs to hatch into hungry maggots can be as little as a few hours on a very hot day. We recommend ‘Rear Guard’ which helps to prevent fly strike for up to 10 weeks, and this is applied to your rabbit before they head home after their spa day. This offer will run every Wednesday through March and then every 2nd Wednesday throughout the spring and summer months. If you would like to book your rabbit in for this offer, please call the surgery on 01798 872089 and ask to speak to Becky or Louisa.

Selling your house? Top tips to get the best price – quickly Gill Burn, owner of Sussex based home decorating company Lady Decorators, offers her advice on showing your home in its best possible light to potential owners. First impressions: First impressions really do count, so make sure that the outside of your house is attractively presented. Walk up to it and look closely: is the paintwork peeling or dirty, the garden overgrown — and is that a drainpipe hanging loose? These are all signs to a prospective purchaser that even the basics need attention and it’s not a good start. According to a recent survey carried out by Halifax Home Insurance, neglecting the outside of your property can reduce the value by as much as 5%. Ensuring your home has ‘kerb appeal’ is the easiest way to retain its value. Now for the inside: The same first impression rule applies. A staggering 90%

of buyers don’t have the ability to see past your possessions and clutter - this may result in a no sale. A prospective buyer needs to imagine themselves living in your house and the key is to offer a bright, clean and clutter-free space, while keeping a warm and welcoming vibe. A light and airy feel: Calm, neutral colours and unchipped paint are essential, as are clean floors. Fresh paint in pale colours will enhance the sense of space and make the interior feel light and airy. Check for any outstanding repairs first, for example cracks in the plaster, broken door knobs or cracked tiles which will spoil the finished effect. Replace any worn or stained flooring and think about hanging mirrors in smaller rooms or dark hallways to make the room feel lighter and add an illusion of space. Spring clean: A thorough spring clean will

add to your house’s appeal. It will smell fresh, look cared for and enhance its charm. Gleaming bathrooms and kitchens are especially important for positive impact — and let the light flood in through sparkling clean windows. The final touches:

Some final finishing touches can make all the difference. A vase of fresh flowers or a pretty plant, and a bowl of fruit on the kitchen worktop, are all small touches which bring a home to life, helping to convince buyers that your house is just what they’re looking for.

Osborne takes a win in first round of the season Variety is Joggers’ spice of life Motor Sport Elayne Nunan – Sports Reporter

It was a thrilling start to the season for Sam Osborne at Brands Hatch in the opening round of the Thundersport GB Championship. Osborne was moved up a class this year, competing in the faster Sportsman class within the Elite 600 championship – and he stormed home with a win and a 2nd place. With no real expectations competing in the faster class, Osborne surprised himself by qualifying 2nd on the grid, with a lap time of 59.981 seconds. He was one of only two riders to go under the one minute mark, the other being team mate and fellow Sportsman class rider Charlie Morris. In race one, after a great start off the front row and leading the way, Osborne crashed out along with seven other riders during the race, saving a back end slide but in doing so losing the front end at Surtees.

Then on Sunday Osborne battled it out in race two, getting pipped into 2nd place in his class on the finish line by 0.016 of a second, and finishing eighth overall. In race three, the 24-year-old Billingshurst rider put in a brilliant performance in the 16-lap race and took a well-deserved win in his class, coming 6th overall in the Elite race. Osborne, riding for MSG Racing and Dyno on their Suzuki GSX-R 600, said: ‘Wow, what a weekend! It’s been tough and testing, with crashing out and the weather on Saturday, but I am delighted to get my first win of the season.” Sam starts the season with a new sponsor, Lane Motorsport, a division of FC Lane Electronics, in Slinfold, and is still looking for more sponsors, large or small. For sponsorship details call Sam on 07743 931964 or see his Facebook page Sam Osborne Racing.

Horsham A league champions Chesworth Rovers U12 Dave Smith– Sports Editor U15 Chesworth Rovers 6 - 0 U15 Perrywood Rovers earned a comfortable win against mid-table Perrywood who never gave up against their table-topping opponents. The game was full of determined

midfield and defensive battling but the home team’s strikers ultimately proved too strong for the visitors’ with Michael Murray and Tim Bennett scoring two apiece and Ben Harrison and Ben Peppercorn scored the other goals, although 3 goals in the last 5 minutes was slightly unfair on Perrywood.

Sam Osborne made a good start at Brands U12 Cranleigh Casuals 1 - 2 U12 Chesworth Rovers Chesworth were back on the road in league action keen to secure a win that would make them Horsham A league champions. Toby made the breakthrough in the first half, Lewis sending a pass to Josh who found Toby who fired home from close range. Cranleigh responded before the whistle and on the break levelled the score. The winner came from Finlay who took Josh’s pass and scored to give Chesworth the league title. U14 Ashington Cougars 1 – 2 U14 Horsham Sparrows Ashington took the lead in the first half after a corner. Sparrows stepped up their performance in the second half with Joe scoring twice. first and secured a draw in this tight double header. Sparrows were beaten in the first game after Hurstpierpoint scored following a corner. The second match was a goalless stalemate although Sparrows ‘keeper Nathan saved a last minute penalty. MoM Joel. Under 16s –U16 boys hosted at home on Saturday for the first of a series of double header league games due to the inclement weather that has meant cancellation of matches. U13 Southdown Girls 1 – 3 U13 Horsham Sparrows Girls Sparrows grabbed a first ever win over Southdown. Sparrows started strongly with Ashleigh B & Holly S putting the team 2-0 up by half time. Southdown pulled a goal back near the end but Ashleigh B scored a second to cap a fine 3-1 win. U14 Horsham Sparrows Girls 3 – 1 U14 Cuckfield Girls Sparrows good form continued with a win over Cuckfield. Alice put them 1-0 up after 10 minutes and Charley scored a second. Cuckfield pulled a goal back but Alice headed in her second just before half time. There were no further goals in the second half. GoG Alice.

Lacklustre Horsham crash at lowly Crowborough Bromley exact Horsham’s Giles Barber playing against Crowborough

Saturday March 5 - London 2 South East Crowborough 13 – 10 Horsham Rugby Dave Snith – Sports Editor After the previous weekend’s upbeat performance against league and cup double chasing Tunbridge Wells Horsham were expected

to make light work of relegation threatened Crowborough. However the East Sussex side battled doggedly on their mud caked pitch to earn a victory over the Green & Whites and to improve their chances of staying in the division. From the whistle the hosts defended soundly against early Horsham pressure but could not

prevent Will Bell scoring in the corner; the try going unconverted. Crowborough made their first advance into the Horsham half in the second quarter and as they grew in confidence. Helped by an extra man following Mike Watts’ yellow card they scored a try through Phil Price, converted for a 7-5 lead, which they took into the half time break.

Late drama sees Horsham lose to rivals Town Stand in keeper Ashley Jones can’t stop Eastbourne’s Fifth

Saturday March 5 - SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne United AFC 2 – 0 Horsham YMCA 0 Football Dave Snith – Sports Editor A bumper crowd of over 400 turned up to witness this top of the table clash in which a Horsham victory would have given them an eight point advantage over rivals Eastbourne Town. However a series of twists and turns and some very late drama saw the visitors narrow the gap to two points with a game in hand after

this nine goal thriller. Horsham were given an early reminder of why Eastbourne Town are their main threat this season when after just 3 minutes the visitors took the lead through Matt Darby who ran through uninterrupted to score in the bottom corner. With 17 minutes gone it was all square after a good Evan Archibald run and cross hit Town’s Jack Turner for an own goal. With both sides playing a cagey game it seemed the teams would go in level at the break but in first half stoppage time Kieron Pamment hit a superb dipping volley from 25 yards out that flew past Greg Nessling in

the Town goal to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Six minutes after the restart it was 3-1 as Evan Archibald fired home Alex Duncan’s cross giving ‘keeper Nessling no chance. Then with 20 minutes remaining the usually solid and reliable Gareth Williams had a nightmare when after rushing out he completely missed the ball giving Jason Taylor the simple task of tapping into an empty net. Town nearly levelled minutes later as Horsham struggled to break out of their half and the visitor’s pressure eventually paid off with 8 minutes to go when Kenny Pogue powered a header passed Williams for the equaliser. Things got a whole lot worse for Horsham 5 minutes later when again ‘keeper Williams was culpable after he came to claim a cross but collided with a team mate making him drop the ball at the feet of Willett who tapped in to give his side the lead. Hornets ‘keeper Williams was injured in the incident and had to leave the field being replaced in goal by defender Ashley Jones. The injury took a while to deal with so it was 6 minutes into added time that, in similar fashion to Williams earlier, Town ‘keeper Nessling fumbled badly and the dropped ball trickled over the line off a defenders leg. A draw at this stage would have been welcome by all but it was not to be as in the last minute of the 8 added a Tom Vickers free kick was headed in by an unmarked Jack Turner giving Eastbourne Town all 3 vital points.

Crowborough continued the second half on the front foot, and Chris Yates extended the lead with a penalty. Horsham again found themselves a man down following James Johnson’s unnecessary yellow card but managed to draw level at 10 – 10 with Jonny Whiting’s unconverted try. As the game became increasingly niggly Horsham’s Josh Mills and Crowborough’s Liam Derrick were yellow carded and then with 10 minutes remaining the home side kicked the winning points with a Yates penalty. A chance to equalise with a last minute penalty was rejected in favour of a winning try from the scrum, but the play came to nothing and Crowborough held on for the victory. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker was left frustrated with the performance. He said: “We were well below par. It was as if it was a training game under lights on a Thursday evening. We were going through the motions rather than ramming home our pressure into points.” Pulborough have conceded the cup quarter-final due on March 12, so Horsham’s next fixture is away to third placed Deal & Betteshanger on March19. Horsham Team: W Bell; Watts, J Johnson, Ordidge, Wilson, T Johnson, Mills (Walker); Talbot, Stone, Barber (Fairs); Harcus, Whiting; Tredgett (Clarkson), Thompson, Gray.

revenge over Boro Saturday March 5 – London 3 South East Bromley 38 - 10 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter

In November Boro pulled off a memorable home win against second placed Bromley, but in the return fixture the Kent side won strongly with six tries. But Boro made the early showing down the slope, the nervous hosts taking time to settle – until they made the line and converted against the run of play. Boro, though, responded immediately, Ben Miller scoring in the corner. The kick and subsequent penalty went adrift before Bromley crashed through and maximised and then touched down again to lead 19-5 at the break. Boro pressed early in the second half and were rewarded when flanker Harvey Strudwick got over but they went 26-10 behind when Bromley latched onto a high kick to score a converted try. With the hosts dominating two further tries materialised, one kicked over, Boro suffering their third consecutive defeat and slipped to eighth in the table. As Boro have conceded their cup tie at Horsham tomorrow (Saturday) they return to action on March 19 with a home game against fourth placed Folkestone.

Goal-shy YM beaten away at Eastbourne Saturday March 5 - SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne United AFC 2 – 0 Horsham YMCA 0 Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland has conceded that any slim chance of promotion has now disappeared, after his side slipped to their seventh Premier Division defeat of the season with a 2-0 loss away at Eastbourne United AFC on Saturday. YM failed to score for just the fifth time this campaign, as a depleted squad submitted a lacklustre display against their ninth-placed opponents. United were by far the better side in the first half and deservedly entered the break a goal to the good thanks to striker Jamie Bunn’s close range opener just after the half hour mark. The visitors were much improved during the second period, but despite their dominant display, Eastbourne front man Liam Baitup’s effort ten minutes

after the restart was enough to secure his side all three points. YM boss Buckland commented: “I might have known how this afternoon would turn out after how it started. Martin Smith broke down (on the way to the game) and Matt Crane had to pull out a bit before two o’clock because of work. I think the result probably reflects where we are in the league if I’m being honest. Fourth or fifth - languishing somewhere like that. If you’ve got any ambitions of finishing higher than that, then you’ve certainly got to come down here and go home with three points. Any hopes of promotion went today. I need to put my thinking head on in the next few weeks and start thinking now about next season. It’s a question of finishing as high up the league as we can now, and it’s time to start having a little bit of a chop and change and having a look at some players.” YM: Fox, Carden, Gathern, Burgess, Evans, Gedling, Wright, Brown, Donaldson, Johnson, N. Sullivan (Schaaf 64).

Heath victory dents Hornets title challenge Photos by John Lines

Terry Dodd goes through but his shot was blocked

MOM Michael Chester is beaten but Boswell’s shot hits the post

Tuesday March 8 - SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 – 0 Horsham Football Dave Snith – Sports Editor Last Saturday at 3.00pm Horsham were 5 points clear at the top of the league with a chance to extend that lead to 8 points. By 10.00pm on Tuesday evening they had surrendered that lead to sit 1 point behind the new leaders Eastbourne Town with a game more played. Saturdays defeat was damaging, but Tuesday night’s loss to resolute and focused Broadbridge Heath could prove fatal in their quest for the season’s target of the league title. On a wet and cold night Horsham never really got going and found Heath in a determined defensive mood inspired by the outstanding Michael Chester in goal. To cap a dismal night for the Hornets their influential captain Joe Shelley was sent off for venting his frustrations verbally at referee Harris. On the other hand this was a memorable

victory for Heath who will have gained a big confidence boost from this win and they can now concentrate on getting as high up the table as possible, and of course the little matter of a Peter Bentley Cup semi-final. This match was not a classic, the weather, playing surface and local rivalries put paid to that: the first half being a bit of a non-event. The chances were few and far between and those that fell to Horsham, mainly to Evan Archibald, were dealt with by the inspired Michael Chester between the posts. In addition to Chester, Heath’s Adam Wickling had a superb game - twice being called upon in the opening 45 minutes to deny Horsham. At the other end ‘keeper James Shaw, playing in place of the injured Gareth Williams, saw a Martyn Flack header go inches over the bar and was needed to save a Tim Martin effort. Horsham seemed to come out more determined for the second half - maybe manager Di Paola had said a few choice words following the first half non show. An early chance fell to Archibald who curled a shot at Chester, only for the Bears

‘keeper to once again pull of a great stop. From the resulting corner Chester was beaten for once by an effort from Darren Boswell only for the ball to canon off the post. With the ball still in play the Heath ‘keeper picked himself up and made a superb one handed save as the ball was fired goal-wards. Horsham were pressing hard at this stage but the Heath defence and Michael Chester in particular were not going to be beaten. Again Chester saved from Archibald and when it looked like he would concede his defence stood strong; twice his team mates made goal line clearances. It was then against the run of play on 59 minutes when Heath scored the deciding goal. Jake Holmes was played in behind the Horsham defence and despite big appeals for offside the Heath forward slotted the ball confidently past Shaw. Heath now sat deeper and frustrated Horsham further as they played out the match in their own half with 10 players behind the ball. As the minutes ticked away Terry Dodd and Archibald both had chances but a combination of

Excellent Saturday for Horsham’s Men & Ladies Saturday March 5 - South League Premier Div 2 Horsham Men’s 1st 4 - 1 Holcombe South Clubs’ Women’s League Div 1 Horsham Ladies 6 - 0 Staines Hockey Martin Read– Sports Reporter Still both very much in promotion contention Horsham’s senior sides delivered strong home wins, the men dismissing Holcombe’s impressive defensive record and

the ladies demolishing Staines six nil, their biggest league win of the season. John Burroughs gave Horsham men the lead in 14 minutes just before Chas Richardson scored the second. A short corner was saved on the line by a Holcombe defender but Noah Chinn put Horsham three up before the break. A further set piece hit the post early in the second half as Horsham kept pressing, resulting in another cracking short range goal by Richardson. Although Holcombe converted a short corner and brought strong saves from

Horsham keeper Andy Isaacs, the result was never in doubt, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “We looked so good going forward and it was great to see others scoring when Jack Dean doesn’t. Everybody played well – that was a lot easier than it might have been!” Skipper Duncan Howarth added: “It was brilliant to see Chas getting two goals after coming into the first team and we could have scored even more.” Horsham remain third on equal points with runners up Tulse Hill & Dulwich but with a game in hand

A resolute Heath defence kept Horsham out

Michael Chester and poor finishing meant it was going to be a sorry night for the Hornets. Shelley got his marching orders with 6 minutes to go and that was it as a contest. The final whistle ended the match and also possibly Horsham’s dream of being league champions.

If things couldn’t have got any worse for Horsham Eastbourne Town fought back to win 2-3 at Arundel and with Town at home to Worthing on Saturday (March 12) Horsham’s match at Chichester City on the same day is now a must win for the Hornets.

and tomorrow (Saturday) travel to fourth placed Winchester who they beat 5-1 in November. Steph Dent gave the ladies a 1-0 first half lead against Staines before the flood gates opened after the break, goals coming in quick succession - Tiff Male finding the net ahead of CJ White. Then Steph scored again and Tiff rounded off an excellent hat-trick with two quick fire strikes. Beaming Team Manager Jane Denman said: “We played really well in the first half and then got better!” Captain Hannah Simpson told us: “We beat them 5-2 earlier in the season and were delighted to keep a clean sheet this time – it would be fan-

tastic if we could bounce straight back up into the Women’s Conference East.”
