Jobs shock as Beales store closes phil dennett
News Editor
About 80 people have their jobs at risk as Beales department store in Horsham faces closure. The company confirmed to the District Post this week that the store will shut in July, ten years after it came to the town. The store employs 31 Beales workers, but there are about 50 others not on the company’s payroll working on concessions within the store. Beales opened at The Forum at the old Allders store at Lower Tanbridge Way in September 2006. A statement from the company said: “The landlord of the Beales store in Horsham has given notice to terminate the lease. The lease ends in July 2016. Beales is disappointed, as it would have liked to have continued trading there. “This matter is separate to CVA (company voluntary arrangement) negotiations. Beales employs 31 staff in its Horsham branch and is currently considering options to re-locate some of these staff to View at View at
other Beales stores, as part of our normal company policy.” Beales had already entered into what is known in the accountancy and business world as a “company voluntary arrangement” (CVA) and had been trying to agree reduced rents for nearly half of its 35 shops to help offset running costs.
The landlord of the Beales store in Horsham has given notice to terminate the lease. The loss of Beales mirrors the decline of top-class large department stores in Sussex towns. Burgess Hill lost its large Victorian Hoadleys stores at Junction Road many years ago, Haywards Heath lost its top-class Hiltons store in South Road, and Brighton lost the renowned Hanningtons store in North Street. None has ever been replaced with a similar store and in more recent years stores have also faced fierce competition from people turning to internet shopping
as well as rising rents and other overheads. Over the years Beales has sold a huge range of goods under one roof including services such as bath shop, bedding, Café Nova, china, glass, cookshop cosmetics and fragrance, decorative accessories, electrical, fashion accessories, furniture, occasional gifts, housewares, womens fashions, shoes, lingerie, nightwear, swimwear, luggage, menswear, stationery and toys. The opening of the Horsham store ten years ago was relatively recent in the firm’s history. Beales empire began in 1881 when John Beale opened what was then called the Fancy Fair and Oriental House in Bournemouth, considered to be the firm’s flagship store in later years. It is believed to have been the first store chain to have a “real life” Father Christmas, in 1885. The opening of the Horsham store much later was seen as a jobs boost and also the addition of a prestige store name to a town that already had a reputation for one of the most attractive town centres in Sussex. Now the town must wait to see how long it takes to fill such a large and prominent building while the staff try to settle their futures..

Bridie is star after transformation Bridie the Irish Setter is one of the lucky stars of alternative dog show Ruffs. Her story of rising from hell-hole misery to contentment in Horsham is one of those highlighted in the best transformation class. Hundreds of pet owners entered and thousands of votes were cast been cast in the RSPCA’s contest. Ruffs celebrates the country’s dogs for their health and happiness unlike conventional dog shows which look at their appearance and breed standard. The Best Transformation category was launched to celebrate the heart-warming and astounding transformations of dogs that had been the victims of the most cruel and callous treatment, but have been rescued and had their lives turned around. Bridie was rescued by the RSPCA from what it described as “some of the worst conditions ever seen”. She was found in a shed in Bradford with 11 other Irish Setters kept in small, filthy cages, with no bedding or even access to water. The dogs were dehydrated and underweight, and were cruelly left to suffer with untreated injuries and infections. Bridie, now aged four, was terrified of the outside world. It took
over a year of love, training, and tender loving care from animal centre staff, but Bridie eventually transformed into an affec-
tionate and happy dog. Julia Wrathall adopted Bridie who now lives in Horsham, West Sussex, and enjoys being taken to Julia’s workplace every day. At home, she’s bouncy, energetic, affectionate and sometimes quite mischievous. Julia said: “Her wonderfully positive nature has shone through, despite the horrors of her former life. “This incredible transformation is huge testament to her willingness to grab hold of her ‘second chance’ with both paws. She is so inspiring, and it is almost impossible to feel ‘down’ in her presence. I feel really privileged to have her in my life.” Dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, cross-breeds and backgrounds were free to enter one of three categories of Happiest Hound, Perfectly Imperfect, and Best Bridie Transformation.

Bellissimo! Convoy leads to Easter Piazza Italia Sunshine brought a dazzling touch of Italy on wheels to towns and villages across Horsham district. A colourful cavalcade of more than 20 classic and modern cars and motorcycles brought an early curtain-raiser for the Easter weekend’s Piazza Italia attraction in Horsham’s town’s centre. Crowds at Billingshurst, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning and Henfield admired the convoy after it left Horsham on Sunday morning. The gleaming sight was all part of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Piazza Italia event, with Horsham District Council joining with community partners to take the festival on tour around the whole of Horsham district this year. Each of the participating market towns gave the drivers and riders their own special greeting as the cars and bikes stopped for about half an hour. They lingered longer in Steyning, which became a minioutpost of Italy. Large crowds waiving Italian flags lined the High Street and the car park awaiting the motorcade, which was heralded by the mighty roar of powerful engines belonging to the likes of Fer-
raris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis. The drivers were welcomed with packed lunches, donated by local eateries, Baloo’s, Cobblestone Tea House, Rhubarb Café and The Sussex Produce Café. The colours of mighty machines, including red, lime green, yellow and orange, sparkled in the sunshine. At the BusyDays Face Painting the Italian flag was a popular request. To support the event, Baloo’s, Steyning Bookshop and The Artisan Bakehouse made special Italian themed offers. A sad farewell was made at 2 p.m. when the Rally moved on, driving through Bramber, Upper Beeding & Small Dole on their way to their next port of call. The whole occasion was organised by Steyning & District Community Partnership with the district council.Horsham Unlimited – Town Centre Business Partnership, Marks & Spencer Horsham and Carmela Restaurant & Deli in Horsham Town Centre along with The Sussex Produce Company, Baloos Bistro, The Rhubarb Café and Cobblestone Walk all in Steyning sponsored the tour. Companies are being invited to have a clean-up in support of poor communities abroad. The firm Bags of Support, based in Partridge Green, is calling on companies across West Sussex to ask staff to clean out their closets and hold a one- off unwanted clothes, shoes and handbag collection in the workplace. Bags of Support will provide plastic bags for each participating company who will receive 50p per kilo of clothes collected. The money raised can be donated any charity of their choice or pledge to support the Nkuringo
Foundation in Uganda, currently supported by Bags of Support. The Nkuringo Foundation has been overjoyed to receive donations towards a capital project of building a school room and of second hand school uniforms from Bags of Support. This enables local children to get an education and have the best chance of a bright and fulfilling future in a challenging environment. To take part in this initiative please call 01403 710498 and for more information log on to www. bagsofsupport.co.uk Karrie Mellor, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Bags of Sup-
port said: “We are really looking forward to working with companies in the local area to benefit the environment, both by reducing landfill of unwanted clothing and to help raise funds for charity. It’s so simple and easy to arrange and staff have reported such a feel good factor of decluttering and helping those in need. It is a sad fact that approximately 8 tonnes of reusable clothes currently end up in landfill in the UK and we are working across the local area to prevent some of this waste happening.

Helping the next generation Brave Sarah inspires
10,000 steps challenge
Students at the session
Students gave up their evening to advise younger people about education choices. Collyer’s college students helped the next generation of Tanbridge House School students, also from Horsham, with their options. The Collyer’s students who attended the event were Rosalyn Bradshaw, Rosie Carruthers, Callum Hopkins, Jenny InglisTaylor, Megan Longdon, Molly Moss and Ella Rowbotham. Molly said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to speak to pupils at the school to give them the full flavour of Collyer’s life from a student perspective. Earlier in the year. Megan
and I were lucky enough to host an assembly at Millais, which was also great experience.” Callum Hopkins said: “I remember speaking to Collyer’s students and teachers as a Tanbridge House pupil at this Options Evening event a few years ago, so it’s great to be back helping the next generation come through! I’m hoping we’ll see them again at our Open Evening at Collyer’s on July 7!” The Collyer’s students are studying subjects right across the broad range of academic and vocational subjects and levels offered at Collyer’s and each share a passion to help the next generation to understand the road into further educa-
tion at the Sixth Form college. Rosie Carruthers said: “Tanbridge House is a fantastic school and this was my opportunity to give something back. It has also been a great chance for me to develop new skills.” Tanbridge House Deputy Head Mark Sheridan said: “The aim of the evening is to help our pupils make informed options. Many thanks to these Collyer’s students for taking time-out to help our pupils make these important choices.” Collyer’s Assistant Principal Melanie Russell said: “These Collyer’s students are stars. It’s as simple as that!”
These boots are made for walking for Teresa Stonestreet as she takes 10,000 steps in memory of a brave girl. Teresa, from Horsham, says she is ‘walking all over cancer’ this month to raise money for Cancer Research UK. She has set herself a target of £1000 and will be walking 10,000 steps everyday throughout this month, the equivalent of 150 miles. During her lunch break and after classes, she is walking around the grounds of Farlington School, Horsham, where she is a teaching assistant, to ensure she reaches her daily target. Teresa says has been motivated to support this charity after the loss a year ago of her great-niece Sarah Watkin, who died of cancer at the age of seven. Teresa said: “Sarah was such an inspiration to all those who came into contact with her. She smiled throughout her treatment, which was long and gruelling to say the least. My niece Leah and her husband Mark, a Geography
teacher, have been very much in the public eye in their home country of Canada and have raised awareness for students at schools to be swabbed for stem cell match throughout Canada. There have been lots of fundraising and awareness events, not least last weekend when there was a “Skate for Sarah” event in Toronto. They have and continue to be an absolute inspiration, as was Sarah. Personally, I felt so helpless as the distance meant that there was little we could do physically to help so this challenge is one small thing that I can do to raise money in her memory. “It is a lovely time of year to get outside to walk after the winter months. I work in beautiful countryside which makes my walks very enjoyable and at weekends I go to the beach. I’m over halfway to reaching my target, so feel confident I will exceed £1000 for this worthwhile cause.” If you would like to support Teresa in her fundraising, please visit her JustGiving page - https://www. justgiving.com/Teresa-Stonestreet.

School pupils held a special tea at their school. And they took a little inspiration from a painter for their gifts. It was all a “thank you” to their mothers as part of Mother’s Day celebration by the girls from Farlington School’s Reception and Prep 1 classes. The Prep 1 girls gave cards inspired by the artist Kandinsky, who they are currently studying in art, as well as an ‘I love you to pieces’
jigsaw gift, an embroidered felt brooch and paper tulips decorated with a special photo. Wassily Kandinsky, son of a tea merchant, was a pioneer of abstract art. He was born in Moscow in 1866 and died in France in 1944. As a child he loved colour and quickly developed a love for art. For the party the children baked cheese straws, fairy cakes and made chocolate fridge cake. The mums watching the girls perform a special Mother’s Day song in the
New Courtyard Hall. In reception the girls sent out personalised invitations, decorated the table and plates, made paper potted plants using their mother’s favourite colours, created named place mats and chocolate cornflake cakes. The guests were greeted at the entrance and taken to their seat where they were entertained with a song and a poem. Scenes from the tea and Kandinsky are pictured.
Police claim good response to service People using a new help service for some crimes appear to welcome it, say police. A team at what is called the “Resolution Centre” reassures people who need to talk to someone about an incident that is worrying them but does not carry a threat or risk of harm and is not an emergency. If it is considered the caller needs more urgent attention than thought the incident is referred elsewhere. Among reactions reported by the police are “It’s such a good service ““My issue was dealt with really well and they made me feel re-
assured” and “It’s been brilliant”. They had been contacted by phone or online, with no need to wait for an appointment, to discuss and resolve their issue. Inspector Paul William who heads a team of 40 officers and staff in the Resolution Centre said: “We aim to contact the caller within 24 to 48 hours of the initial call and resolve the incident at the earliest opportunity without a need to deploy an officer.
“Available 8am to 10pm seven days a week, we deal with issues where there is a low threat or risk of harm and where the incident is not an emergency.” Assistant Chief Constable Robin Smith said: “Previously we sent officers to many incidents and very large proportion of these could be resolved without deploying a unit at all. “Our aim is for the Resolution Centre, which is now fully staffed, to manage 41, 000 incidents a year, reducing the number of deployments of frontline staff. However there will be incidents which cannot be resolved using the resources of the Resolution Centre. If this occurs we will endeavour to send the incident to the most appropriate team to deal with. “We are continuously evaluating the service we provide and are pleased with the feedback we are getting - ‘really thorough’ and ‘supportive’ is just what I like to hear.” To learn more about how the Resolution Centre works go tohttps://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=_QPqg1qM6Dc

Children offered free play places Kallikids staff
Children can enjoy free activities in Horsham under a sponsorship scheme. Youngsters of all ages and from all walks of life are being invited to apply for a place with the 2016 KalliKids Sponsored Child initiative. There are nine places available in Horsham, in activities ranging from outdoor learning and swimming to martial arts. The groups offering sponsorship places in Horsham this year are Kung Fu School, Talking Tots, The Sussex Swim School, Woods for
Learning and Vocademy. If successful, the youngsters will get to take part in one of the activities free for a whole year. More than 160 youngsters in total will be sponsored across the UK. Sussex-based Julie Pullin, former British number one tennis player, is ambassador this year. She said: “All children deserve the opportunity, regardless of circumstance, economic or social status, to learn new skills. I have joined the KalliKids Sponsored Child initiative, as together, we want to give as many
youngsters as possible more opportunities. “Trying new skills while you are young is vital. These skills help build both physical and social confidence as youngsters move into adulthood.” KalliKids is an online resource for quality–checking children’s activities and services across the UK. The scheme offers all children an equal opportunity to take part in a quality checked activity, free of charge for a period of one year. Since it launched two years ago, more than 120 youngsters have benefitted. The founder of KalliKids, Karen Bach, said: “Inspiring young people to take part in new activities is pivotal to everything we do. Not only does it further their skills but it also helps nurture their confidence and social skills. “I would encourage families to take a look at the sponsorships on offer. It doesn’t cost anything to look. It doesn’t cost anything to apply. And if successful it doesn’t cost anything to take part.” To find out more information about #ThisKidCan or to apply for a place visit www.kallikids.com/ en/KalliKids/sponsor-my-child/ sponsored-child-2016-/ Last year Kallikids won the OUstanding Entrepreneur 2015 title in the Best Businesses Awards.

Footpath under threat from rain Volunteers are in a race against time to stop a footpath being washed away because of too much heavy rain. Members of the Storrington Conservation Society face a big task at Fryern Dell to reverse the erosion of the river bank just below the waterfall. A spokesman said: “Following persistent heavy rains, the need is urgent in order to avoid the footpath being washed away. The work will begin on April 2 when the work party meets at 10.00am. Volunteers in wellies will be welcome as usual. On March 5 the well supported work party cleared a fallen tree further upstream, and established protection on a short length of eroded bank, useful experience for the major task.” Barry Evans, of Southern Water, gave a talk to the group at one of its regular Tea and Talk sessions
at the village hall. He showed an informative video on water use, and then spoke with great knowledge and helpful figures about how demand is increasing on what is a limited resource. He stressed the need to avoid wastage, and mentioned that water meters help awareness of our usage and reduction of bills. As Southern Water also deals with waste water, he pointed among other things to the problems caused when fat is put down the drain. ‘Please don’t’ was the message. The Thursday afternoon work party meets at the West Street Garden on April 21 at 2.00pm, with tools provided and helpers are welcome. For details contact Mick Denness on 01903 745971, or look on our website www.storringtonconservation.org.uk/. Pictured are volunteers at work.

Modest Sue praises team at farewell A modest Samaritan paid tribute to her team as she handed over the reins. Director of Horsham and Crawley Samaritans Sue Jago said farewell and welcomed Roger Dugdale to the role. Sue gave a presentation on branch activities during her three year stint placing particular emphasis on her priority project which was to raise awareness of the Samaritans in the local community. She described how this had had many beneficial knock-on effects leading to strengthened partnerships with other community organisations as well as an increased interest in volunteering and supporting the branch with donations. Sue said: “Our callers are at the heart of everything we do. Our service is more relevant than ever before; many of our callers are struggling with uncertain futures
and relationship problems as well as isolation and loneliness. It has been a privilege to serve the branch and local community and I know that Samaritans has provided and will continue to provide a vital life line to anybody who needs us in times of distress.” Sue paid tribute to other members and said: “I could not have done any of this without my brilliant team of deputy directors and my thanks go to them for all their hard work, enthusiasm and willingness to dig in and help with all sorts of tasks, some serious and some light hearted but all aimed at providing a better service for our callers.” Roger Dugdale steps into the Director’s job with the benefit of more than 20 years as a listening volunteer and previous experience as the Caller Support lead. He said:
“I’m proud to be taking on the directorship and very grateful that the branch is in such good shape, largely owing to the tremendous job Sue and her team have done over the past three years. “Like many organisations, we are struggling to find enough volunteers and that will be my priority in the immediate future. I am looking forward to working with our current volunteers and am delighted that I have a strong team of Deputy Directors to support me.“ Chairman Paul Sherar paid a warm tribute to Sue and presented her with restaurant tokens and a bouquet of flowers. Also in attendance was Samaritans regional director Ross Gill who presented Sue with a thank you gift on behalf of the South East branch directors.
School takes 14 awards for circus theme Taking a risk won students from a Horsham school 14 awards in the 2016 Sussex Police Rock Challenge. The pupils from Tanbridge also took third place overall, behind winners Cavendish and runner-up Brighton and Hove High School. Judges said the Tandbridge highly acrobatic piece Secrets Behind the Circus had risky lifts and was performed with a vivacious energy that kept the audience on their toes. The judges said with vibrant set colours and distinctive costumes Tanbridge House vividly
showed the contrast of the wildly exhilarated audience to the cruelty to the animals. The Tanbridge awards for excellence were: student leadership Be Your Best Foundation, video performance Visions Unlimited, Lighting T-Mec, Entertainment Anti-Bullying Works, set design and function Ansvar Insurance, drama Pauline Quirke Academy, stage use West Sussex County Council Think Family, performance skill Pauline Quirke Academy, choreography Sussex Police, stage crew Be Your Best Foundation, visual

lena Kennedy Foundation receives a bursary of £1500 to help cover the costs of university study, as well as on-going guidance and training from the Foundation. The students have all overcome significant challenges to secure access to higher education. Uniquely, the bursary sponsored by UCAS, the UK’s university admissions service, is open to all students pursuing any subject. At the awards Thomas said: “I feel very proud, and most of all honoured to have been helped by this organisation. As a hard working student from a low income family, the Foundation has opened a lot of doors for me and they have helped shape my future. “There are many people out there like myself who are determined to do well, and the Foundation can turn that into a reality.” Helen Thorne, UCAS’ Director of External Relations was also at the House of Lords to meet Thomas
and to celebrate with all of the students. Helen said: “UCAS is proud to be sponsoring the Helena Kennedy Foundation bursaries again this year. The Foundation’s work in supporting talented students who have faced challenging circumstances aligns directly with our goal to support widening participation. We wish Thomas every success in his future studies.” The Helena Kennedy Foundation was set up in Baroness Kennedy’s name over 15 years ago to take forward the findings of her seminal ‘Learning Works’ report. Speaking at the event, Baroness Kennedy said: “The awards recognise the great personal achievement of people who have faced real hurdles and disadvantage but who have turned to education to change their lives. The bursaries ease their financial burdens and applaud their success.” Thomas is pictured with Helen Thorne.
Braved cold to help lives Volunteers braved a cold day to support efforts to help people who feel suicidal. The Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley said they were delighted to welcome Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham,to their collecting team. The group said that although biting cold kept many people indoors those who did venture out donated a “very generous” £808 to the local branch. Jeremy said how touched he was by the number of people who said they had been helped in the past by contacting Samaritans. New branch director Roger Dugdale said: “We are very grateful to Jeremy for giving up his time to

How clinic can help
Turning back the clock
The Lymphoedema Awareness week was a reminder of how a local hospice can help people with the problem of swelling. The out-patient clinic at St Catherine’s Hospice is open to everyone in the local community, not just those cared for by the hospice. The clinic offers treatment to more than 400 patients with cancer and non cancer related swelling. The majority of patients attending the clinic have developed Lymphoedema following cancer treatment, which has caused fluid to accumulate in their tissue and cause swelling, but some patients have non cancer related swelling. This can be caused by impaired mobility due to neurological conditions or trauma injuries. Clinics are run Monday to Friday at the Malthouse Road site by two specialist Lymphoedema nurses. There is also a monthly outreach clinic in Caterham. Referrals are accepted from GP’s, specialist Nurses and hospital consultants. Swelling can occur anywhere in the body, but is most likely to affect the limbs. As with other care provided by St Catherine’s, treatment is planned on an individual basis. This includes a combination of skin care, exercise, the application of compression garments and Manual Lymphatic Drainage, like hand massages. Initial treatment is aimed at reducing a patient’s swelling which may require
A Billingshurst ironmongery business will turn back the clock on Saturday when it celebrates a milestone. Five different ironmongers have occupied Carlton House at 48-52 High Street, Billingshurst, continuously for more than a century. The latest occupiers celebrate their fifth anniversary and will relocate the front door to its original position of 106 years ago, and raise funds for a local children’s hospice. There will be a visit tomorrow to Billingshurst by a nationally famous celebrity dog. He will pose with local children for photos in aid of Chestnut Tree children’s hospice. David Wagg, Co-owner of Austens Homehardware, the current incumbent said: “We feel very much a part of Billingshurst and its history and are continuing a century-long ironmongery tradition on the site. “That’s why we want to celebrate with local residents and give something back through our neighbour in the High Street, Chestnut Tree House”. Carlton House was built as a private home for the Puttock family in 1866 and converted into shops in 1909. Its first ironmonger was ‘J.H.Field’, who shared the building with ‘R. Crisp’ the hairdresser and ‘Tribe’, the butcher. In the 1920s, a second ironmonger, Wm.C.Pilcher, followed before a third, ‘Higgins’ took all three shops. In 1982 Aus-

Lymphoedema impacts on people in different ways; not just physically for five years said: “Lymphoedema impacts on people in different ways; not just physically, it can affect people’s jobs, social lives and body image. We see men and women of all ages. Our youngest patient was 19 and our eldest 93. As you can imagine their needs are very different and we do our best to tailor our care to each individual”. School joins Dementia Friends Blood donors must Children, staff and governors at Billingshurst Primary School have taken a key step towards helping end the stigma surrounding dementia by becoming Dementia Friends. Dementia Friends was launched in February 2013 by the Alzheimer’s Society charity. It aims to help people understand what it might be like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action. Alzheimer’s Society is aiming to have four million Dementia Friends by 2020, to help make England more dementia-friendly and improve the lives of the 680,000 people currently living with the condition in the country. Rachel Underwood, Year 4, was one of the children who took part in a number of exercises aimed at helping participants understand the effect of dementia on people’s everyday lives. She said:“I liked the dressing exercise. We all do it every day but it is really hard to get dressed if you forget how to do up your buttons. We learnt that you have to be more patient with a person who has dementia, it’s like not being rushed when you get dressed for school in the mornings” Joshua Pullen, Year 3, said “This is the second time I have become a Dementia Friend! We learnt about
it at Beavers and made dementia friendly signage that could be used around the village.” Helen Williamson, head teacher, said: “I’m proud that the school
has signed up to be a Dementia Friend; the information the children have been given enables them to show greater empathy for people living with dementia in our community. With a growing number of people living with dementia, it’s more important than ever we all have a better understanding of the condition. From helping someone find the right bus to spreading the word
Rop es, Sw ings and C lim bin g Thi ngs
about dementia, it can help make our local community a better place to live.” Alzheimer’s Society, Tim Wilkins, Service User Involvement Officer for West Sussex, who led the information session, said: “It was a wonderful challenge to try and get over 600 children aged 4-11 to understand about dementia. We have had some lovely examples today from the children about how they would become Dementia Friends from spending more time with granny to asking their parents to become Dementia Friends. Dementia Friends isn’t about creating experts, it’s about helping people understand a little bit more about what it’s like to live with the condition and then turn that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.” Billingshurst Primary School will be the first school to sign up to be part of Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance in its bid to create a dementia friendly community. If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend or helping create more communities that are dementia friendly, go to www.dementiafriends.org.uk to find your nearest information session or to volunteer as a Dementia Friends Champion.
keep appointments Blood donors in the Horsham district are being asked to make sure they keep appoints in the buildup to Easter. Organisers say people are often busy around Easter and the school holidays. So NHS Blood and Transplant is asking blood donors in Horsham with appointments during March to please keep them to help meet patient needs over the holidays 6,000 units of blood are needed by hospitals across England and North Wales every day to treat patients. Blood is used for wide variety of life-saving procedures. This includes helping to save the life of a new mother during or after childbirth or treating patients with blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia and Thalassaemia, which require regular transfusions. Red cells last for only 35 days while the shelf life of platelets, a clotting factor used to help treat patients with leukaemia and cancer, is even shorter at just seven days. Michelle Laserna, Senior Marketing Coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said:“We rely on our loyal donors in Horsham to help us make sure that vital supplies of blood are available for patients
when they need it. If you have an appointment in March, please keep it, especially if your blood group is O- negative or A- negative. If you find you can’t please let us know as soon as possible, so we can make the appointment available to someone else. “We also welcome new donors in the Horsham and surrounding areas. If you’ve never given blood before, now is a good time to start. It’s easy to sign up online and book an appointment.” To donate blood for the first time you need to be aged between 17 and 66. First you need to register, either online atwww. blood.co.uk or by calling the 24 hour donor helpline on 0300 123 2323. Once registered, book an appointment for your nearest blood donor session and then come along and make your first donation. It is also easy for donors to book appointments through mobile apps for Windows, Android and Apple devices. To download the app, search ‘NHSGiveBlood’ in the app store.

Hairy faced beasts and the Sussex Coyote Neil Arnold Sussex Folklore
There are some cases involving escaped animals, and sightings of non-native animals which are just too bizarre to comprehend. Whilst it may not be that unusual for someone to keep an exotic one only needs to pop into a time machine and travel back to 1872 to realise just how strange Sussex has been over the years! In May of 1872 a young girl was playing in her garden at Worthing when suddenly a strange, muscular beast leaped over the garden fence, rushed towards her and bit her on the arm. The animal tore at her clothing; the girl screamed but managed to escape; rushing to her home covered in blood telling her parents of a “large beast with hair on its face” and armed with “two tusks”. The terrified youngster showed her wounds to her alarmed parents – two teeth marks were clearly visible and the young girl was in some distress, but just what type of creature had accosted her? Her state caused great consternation in the village; with many of the locals arming themselves with pitchforks and other weapons and taking to the streets and woods in search of the assailant. However, the many searches for the monster
proved fruitless and in spite of her frightened appearance several locals began to doubt her story; thinking that she had caused harm to herself and made up a monster tale for attention. Two days later however things took another strange turn when it seemed that the monster described by the girl had appeared again; on witness describing the creature as resembling a gorilla and soon the truth of the matter emerged when a reward sign appeared in the village; asking for any information or the capture of an ape which had escaped from a travelling menagerie. I’m unsure as to whether the culprit was ever captured but in 1911 another mystery beast was finding comfort in stalking the poultry farms of Sussex and leaving a trail of gory devastation as half-eaten carcases of victims littered the countryside. Hunts were organised in search of the mystery marauder in the Brighton and Lewes areas but to avail. Months passed by with no sightings of the creature and yet more hen roosts had succumbed to its predatory nature; blood drained from ripped bodies and bones crushed by a killer which was clearly no fox. But in November of 1911 a Southdown famer claimed he had seen the creature as he made his way along the Brighton-Lewes Road and stated quite categorically that it was a coyote – a large canid indigenous to North America, and resembling a grey wolf only
smaller. How such an animal had happened to be in Sussex is what everyone was asking at the time especially after it had visited the poultry farm of a Mr. Gorringe who resided at Chyngton. And so what became of the Sussex coyote? Well, eventually a huntsman tracked the critter down to a small pocket of woodland which was circled by other brave, armed men. According to a press report at the time, ‘Wherever it ran it was belaboured with sticks until it dropped dead’ and yet there were still those in the area of the opinion
that in spite of the coyote being found that ‘an ordinary fox or vixen may have been responsible for all this upsetting of the village life.’ Mind you, in 1934 it was believed that another mystery canid was on the loose in Sussex, this time at Maresfield. It was claimed that nearly five-hundred chickens were slain within the vicinity and all killed within just eight hours; leading people to believe that a real monster was loose. However, the animal which apparently killed the chickens at a rate of one per minute turned out to be a ferret which had
escaped from its cage at a poultry farm. The animal, caked in the blood of its unfortunate victims was shot dead; which; as is often the case with escaped animals usually happens. In 1892 a wolf scare took place in Sussex and panicked locals had every reason to be alarmed because a wolf had indeed been seen after it had escaped from a travelling menagerie. Several sheep fell prey to the savage beast which was eventually slain by gamekeepers of the farm belonging to a Mr. William Harris.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We have been using the Resident and Clive G Hancocks subsequently, The District Post for Director advertising since the launch of the paper. Whilst it is difficult to quantify results, I would say that as a free paper, delivered around the whole Horsham District and picked up from selected places in the area, they are friendly to deal with, professional, very helpful with design and swift to print. Deadline is Wednesday for a Friday print and they have NEVER let us down! We use this paper exclusively. Because it is a free paper and the best known for that around the area, the circulation is getting bigger by the week/month and therefore I would recommend highly as THE advertising vehicle to use.

oil and water levels. Although driving lessons may teach young drivers how to safely and confidently manoeuvre a car, they don’t necessarily offer any insight into how to maintain it. As well as being confident while on the road, drivers also need to ensure they are comfortable performing basic car maintenance, which is why Station Garage’s masterclass is essential to any new driver. James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage, commented:
“Building confidence amongst new drivers is really important to us so, we’re thrilled to be launching these masterclasses. The evening will offer new drivers the opportunity to learn more about how to keep their cars safe on the road. Unfortunately, basic car maintenance isn’t something taught in driving lessons, but the importance of any driver knowing their way around their car, should not be underestimated. Even more than confidence, we want to offer peace of mind
Character Rural Offices With Far Reaching Views
Looking after your staff certainly helps morale and hopefully productivity follows. It’s not always easy but a welcoming work environment is a good starting place. With an idyllic rural setting just a few miles from Horsham, Eastlands Park offices provide well presented, practical office space set over two floors, where character comes as part of the package. Andrew Algar, head of commercial at Henry Adams estate agency, said: “These offices have the character of beams with the practicality of modern lighting and cabling. It’s a very attractive setting being part of a courtyard of residential cottages, equestrian stables and storage buildings and the far reaching views could even inspire staff and reduce stress but whether or not

Annual Riverside Walk Event
Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com
Starring TVs John Lyons
FATHER BROWN THE CURSE OF THE INVISIBLE MAN Thu 24 - Sat 26 March 7.30pm (Sat Matinee 2.30pm)
This year, the annual Riverside Walk Event, organised by Horsham Town Community Partnership, will be on July 16. Covering 13 miles, the circular route encompasses the town, has no difficult gradients and allows access at several points with nearby bus stops, to get you home, if time or energy is in short supply. One of the attractions of this local amenity is that it is possible to complete the walk in small sections, but once a year, individuals and groups are encouraged to join others and enjoy the whole journey in one day. The walk follows several water courses, including the River Arun, and passes some of the older buildings in the town centre, the site of the Motte & Bailey and ancient woodland. On the day, it will also pass through Warnham Nature Reserve, where the lunch stop will take place. Sponsorship of the event has been kindly provided by North Horsham Parish Council and the three Horsham Neighbourhood Councils, Denne, Forest and Trafalgar. Free bus No one should be put off by the length of the Walk, as a free mini bus (on hire from Horsham District Community Transport) will be
making frequent calls to designated stops, to collect anyone who wants to return to the start. Two hundred walkers set off in 2014 and over 150 the following year. This year, it is hoped to achieve even greater numbers, as the Walk is intended to help create awareness of dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society. Individuals and any organisation, are encouraged to take part and raise money for the charity, by sponsorship. However, organisers state that anyone wishing to raise money in the same way, for another cause, may do so. A large team, from the 5th/10th Horsham Scouts, completed the walk last year and have already announced that they will take part again this time. A group of disabled ramblers in rough terrain buggies, led by a special walk leader, also took part in the last two events. Horsham Joggers had great fun completing the 2015 route - ahead of everyone else - and many walkers were pleased to see parts of Horsham they had never seen before. Start Meeting and registration will be at the Rugby Club in Hammerpond Road, where there are toilets and ample car parking spaces. The walk
will be started at 10.00 am and, this year, participants will begin by heading northwards, through Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods, following the route anti-clockwise. The first refreshment stop will be at the Strawberry Fields café at New House Farm. A pause for lunch will be taken at Warnham Nature Reserve where, thanks to the wardens, entrance will be through the (usually locked) Pondtail Road gate. Sandwiches and drinks will be on sale here. The last leg includes walking beside Boldings Brook and the River Arun, before traversing historic Chesworth Farm, with an opportunity to view the newly developed area of wetlands and perhaps make a note to fully explore another day. The Rugby Club will be reached soon after meeting the Horn Brook, and the bar will be open for returning walkers entitled to more refreshment and a sit down. Taking part If you can take part – even if for one section - please register at horshamriversidewalk@gmail.com or call 07780 701184. The organisers would like to see early registration, to help caterers and to ensure there are sufficient stewards. Website: horshamtowncommunitypartnership.btck.co.uk/

At Home Estate and Letting Agency support local school Recently formed local estate agency, At Home Estate and Letting Agency, were delighted to donate their first sale fee to local school Queen Elizabeth II. Launched in 2015, At Home Estates are fast proving a runaway success with property owners, offering a local specialist service, but with an online price tag. With a selling fee of just 0.75%, and professional photography and adverts on the big portals as part of the service, properties are being snapped up quickly, leaving some very happy sellers. Delighted with their success, the At Home team decided to celebrate by donating £999, the whole of their first sale fee, to the local
school. Paul Davies, founder of At Home (and seen here with school Head, Lesley Dyer, Emma Parrott, also from At Home, and pupils Ashley and Sarah), said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to support the local community and this school, in particular. We have close links with the school, so it was a really nice fit for the company. We’re also thrilled with the growing success of At Home Estate and Letting Agency.’ To learn more about the great feedback and service, please call At Home Estate Agents on: 01403 730023 or email: help@homeestates.org.

John Burroughs equalised against Winchester
Saturday March 12 – South League Premier Div. 2 Winchester 1 - 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter
With London Edwardians four points to the good and heading for promotion as champions, both Horsham, now third on 40 and Winchester fourth on 39, needed to win but they settled for a nerve
Junior Football Round Up Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor U12 East Grinstead 0 - 4 U12 Horsham Sparrows Sparrows completely dominated in what had looked like a tricky fixture away to East Grinstead Inter Meds. The defence were strong and ‘keeper Kane was rarely called into action. The midfield provided quick and accurate passes into the attack allowing Ollie to score twice in each half. MOM was Ollie. U14 Horsham Sparrows 8 – 1 U14 Steyning Sparrows took an early lead through Oliver “B” who netted twice in quick succession. Steyning struck back to make it 2-1 but Sparrows extended their lead to 3-1 before the interval. In the second half Sparrows continued to dominate and scored 5 further unanswered goals to secure the win that lifts them to second place in Division B. Alex scored twice, Andrew and Oliver “S” got one apiece but MoM went to Oliver “B” for a good performance and scoring 4 goals. U15 Copthorne 7 – 1 U15 Horsham Sparrows 10 man Sparrows played unbeaten table toppers Copthorne and despite holding the home team for the first half an hour ended up losing the game to a strong Copthorne outfit. A consolation goal from Jordan and a man of the match performance from goalkeeper Tim contributed to the never say die
attitude shown by the team. U16 Horsham Sparrows 2 – 1 U16 Roffey Robins U16 Horsham Sparrows 2 – 0 U16 Roffey Robins The first 40 minute game of this double header saw Sparrows secure an early lead with a goal from Mark S., followed ten minutes later by his second. Further attempts on goal failed to materialise, and in the closing minutes Roffey responded with a goal from a corner. MoM was Charlie. The second game again saw Sparrows take an early lead, this time Nathan P from a free kick taken by Alex C. Mark S then secured his third goal of the morning from a lobbed through ball. MoM was Harry E. Sparrows U11 Girls Sparrows played in a 10 match friendly tournament in Hassocks against some of the best teams in Sussex including Crawley Town and Mile Oak Wanderers. At the half way stage of the 8 minute games Sparrows had won all 5 matches without conceding a goal. In the next 5 they won 4 and drew 1 to give an overall tournament score of 16-2. Sparrows Women’s Team Sparrows ladies side was decimated by injury and illness but started well in this cup fixture with Georgina B scoring with a left foot shot. Crawley came back strongly with the gale blowing behind them to score 5 before half time The second half saw sparrows fight back with 2 of their own from
jangling draw. Fortunately, second placed Tulse Hill & Dulwich shared the points at Woking so the status quo was maintained. Winchester went ahead with a hotly disputed goal, being reviewed by the league, but the result stands. Horsham keeper Andy Isaacs pulled off some great saves, Horsham negating a barrage of short corners before John Burroughs equalised from a set piece. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell said: “We needed our full squad when skipper Duncan Howarth and Chas Richardson, last week’s scorer of two goals, were sidelined early on. We had the majority of the game and should have won but if we win our last three then we’ll be promoted. We’ve got Oxford Hawks at home tomorrow (Saturday) with the chance of bettering our goal difference.” Horsham Hockey Club are celebrating the promotion of the Men’s 4ths as Champions of Sussex Open Division 3 with three games to spare, 110 goals, including spectacularly big wins, and a goal difference of +88. Al Campbell commented: “The team has an ideal blend of grey hair and young bucks, acting as a conduit into senior hockey while keeping the older members at the club - great confirmation that we’re bucking the trend by growing the membership with strength in depth, giving us a powerful presence in Sussex Hockey.” Lucy and Hannah D, but despite constant pressure and a number of good saves from the home keeper Crawley ran out winners in a feisty hard fought match. U15 Lingfield 0 - 7 U15 Chesworth Rovers Chesworth Rovers put in another impressive effort to beat struggling Lingfield 7-0 with league top-scorer Michael Murray adding five to his tally for the season. The home side held out for 20 minutes until Ewan Rennison nodded in at Horsham Sparrows U11 girls

Horsham ladies tough out vital win Alexandra Malzer has been selected for England U16 squad
Saturday March 12 –Women’s Hockey League Div. 1 Havant 1- 3 Horsham Ladies Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporterr At Havant both sides had all to play for – Horsham, now third, two points behind current runners up Southgate, gunning for promotion back into the Conference East league and the struggling hosts battling to avoid relegation. Horsham won the day, but not without a real test. Both sides had chances in the closely matched first half but neither found the net, until, after the interval; Havant went ahead from a breakaway. Former Horsham captain Emma Shingles equalised with a tellthe far post from Max McAteer’s superb corner. Murray made it two before the break and in the second half Chesworth moved up a gear to confirm their dominance. Defender Connor Jones moved up to attacking midfield and provided three of Murray’s further strikes with slide-rule passes and Rennison added his second to seal a convincing win. U12 Royal United 13 – 2 U12 Horsham Ambassadors Royal United continued their
ing strike before Tiff Male gave Horsham the lead, then CJ White put the result beyond doubt from a short corner. Horsham’s Elle Blakesley said: “It was a good fight and we worked hard to win. Emma had an excellent game in our great team performance. It was a shame that scores elsewhere didn’t go our way but we’re still very much in contention coming in to our final game tomorrow (Saturday) at home against Oxford University”. Meanwhile, Horsham Hockey Club are delighted to announce that Alexandra Malzer has been called up for the England Under 16 squad with training camps and matches at Lilleshall up to the end of July, international opponents including Holland, Scotland & Ulster, Germany and Belgium. revival with a comprehensive win over fellow relegation rivals Ambassadors. Nervy Horsham back to winning ways at Chichester Photos by John Lines
A Horsham corner hits the crossbar
Evan Archibald tries an overhead attempt Saturday March 12 - SCFL Premier Division Chichester Town 0 - 2 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Although it was a far from convincing performance, Horsham stopped the rot - following defeats in their previous two matches - with a much needed 3 points to remain a point behind leaders Eastbourne Town who beat Worthing United 4-0. The Hornets were made to work hard by a Chichester City side that have little to play for this season as they sit just above mid table. It
took a late second goal from Keiron Pamment to secure the points after Terry Dodd had scored in the first half. City will be kicking themselves however as Josh Clack wildly missed a penalty just 5 minutes before Pamment made the match safe. City’s Jimmy Wild went close with headers in the opening 15 minutes while at the other end Terry Dodd skewed a shot well off target. Dodd however made up for his miss-hit when just over the 20 minute mark he headed a Darren Boswell cross past home ‘keeper Dave Hook to give Horsham the lead. In a match plagued with poor finishing City had two
efforts that Hornets ‘keeper James Shaw watched fly well wide, the first from Josh Clack and then an even less accurate effort from Wild. Shaw did however have a nervy moment just before the half time whistle when after a foul by Adam Hunt the resulting free kick flew across the area and inches past the post when any contact would have seen an equaliser. The second half continued in much the same vein with more erratic finishing and lack of purposeful play and it wasn’t until well over the hour that the first meaningful second half effort tested either ‘keeper. Pamment played Dodd in on goal but City ‘keeper
YM slump to defeat at home to Pagham Saturday March 12 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 – 3 Pagham Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter Horsham YMCA suffered back-toback Premier Division defeats for only the second time this season on Saturday, as in-form visitors Pagham secured all three points with a 3-0 win at Gorings Mead. The hosts were dealt two huge blows right at the end of an otherwise uneventful first half, as impressive Lions’ midfielder Lloyd Rowlatt fired home ninety seconds before the break and Liam Humphrey’s then netted three minutes into added time, as YM manager Peter Buckland was sent to the stands for berating referee Nick Blogg. The home side prodded and probed during a livelier second period, but as they struggled to create the clear cut chances required to find a way back into the fixture, their fate was then sealed five minutes from time as Pagham
substitute George Cody sublimely volleyed into the top corner to make it 3-0. Assistant manager Dean Potter commented: “It was disappointing, but I didn’t think it was a 3-0 score line today. We made two big mistakes in our box for the two goals and the third one is just a great strike into the top corner. “I think that Pagham deserved to win, but I don’t think they deserved to win by three goals. I think the second goal killed us. Going in at 1-0 down, you’re still in it, but 2-0 gives you much more of a challenge. “Pete is a passionate guy and he was frustrated. I don’t like criticising referees, but I thought that he had a bad game today, I really did. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to say that we deserved anything out of the game, because I don’t think we did, but I think the score line is harsh. “We’ve got seven games left and hopefully we can still try and get that third place by winning as many of those seven games as we can.”

Pagham keeper James Binfield catches as YM’s Phil Johnson closes in
Hook pulled off a superb save to deny the Horsham striker. Wild again missed a headed chance and the home side had a penalty shout turned down when Declan Sieden collided with Shaw; the referee waved away the City appeals. Minutes after the unsuccessful penalty shout Chichester was awarded a penalty and with it a way back into the match. Some poor Horsham defending led to an obvious penalty that Clack smashed way over the bar allowing Horsham to keep their slender advantage. Horsham’s luck held again when after Shaw messed up a clearance Charlie Farmer cleared off the line. However with 3 minutes remaining the match
was settled in favour of the visitors when Pamment turned and shot past Hook. On another day, and with better finishing from the opposition, this was a match the nervy looking Horsham could have easily lost. Horsham’s pursuit of Eastbourne Town however was given a boost on Tuesday evening when the league leaders were held at home by Hassocks in a goalless draw, reflecting that the East Sussex side are also feeling the pressure.. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit AFC Uckfield Town while Eastbourne Town host Loxwood. Horsham Team: Shaw, Storrie, Knee, Hunt, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Archibald, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell.
Heath gain revenge over Newhaven Saturday March 12 - SCFL Premier Division Newhaven 1 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Heath reversed the previous three 2-1defeats this season by Newhaven to take all 3 league points. In a fairly even first half with few clear cut chances, Mitchell Hamilton had the first sight of goal for Newhaven in the opening minutes but sliced his left foot shot high and wide of the goal. At the other end a Scott Weller free kick was headed narrowly over the Newhaven bar by Martyn Flack and 15 minutes before the break Weller dribbled the ball around three defenders but then shot straight at the Dockers keeper Jake Buss. The game changed on the hour mark when Newhaven’s Connor Sidwell grabbed Tim Martin’s shirt to prevent the Heath striker going through on goal earning the defender a second yellow card and an early shower. Heath took full
advantage of the extra man and took the lead just minutes after the players departure. Shaun Findlay won the ball in midfield and played it to Tim Martin to cross towards the far post, Jake Holmes hit a right foot shot that Buss did well to save but the ball came back to Holmes who finished from close range. A minute later it was 2-0, Holmes was again the executioner having again been put through by Findlay he hit a left foot shot from 25 yards into the bottom right hand corner. Newhaven pulled a goal back with 5 minutes remaining through the divisions leading scorer Lee Robinson, who showed his class with a clinical finish from close range. Heath should have wrapped up the game in injury time when Jake Legrange beat the offside trap and tried to get round the Newhaven keeper who made a superb save diving bravely at his feet.
Heath Team: M.Chester, Wicking, Robinson, Flack, S.Chester, Waddingham, Martin, Muntungi (Burchell 84), Findlay (Legrange 65), Holmes, Weller.
