Supporters of promotion-chasing Brighton and Hove Albion have given a boost to young footballers at Broadbridge Heath. The Horsham-based Brighton and Hove Albion supporters group North West Sussex Seagulls has donated £350 to Broadbridge Heath Junior Football Club Under-10’s football team. The team’s manager, Paul Francis, thanked them for what he called their fantastic donation, which paid for some desperately needed hooded training tops for all of the team’s young players. The Seagulls group secretary Mike Wilson said that they were delighted to be able to offer sponsorship and financial support to local youth
football as part of their commitment to help fund local sports clubs and other charitable good causes. The group has given several thousand pounds to various clubs and organisations since being formed in 2011. It has 350 members and takes about 160 Albion fans to every home game at the Amex Community Stadium on three coaches from across the north west of the county. Pictured are Mike Wilson and Ian Morris from North West Sussex Seagulls (right) presenting a cheque to the Broadbridge Heath Under 10’s team along with manager Paul Francis and coaches (left).
A giant permanently-fixed Ferris wheel is planned for Horsham’s Carfax – as revealed by hitherto secret documents seen exclusively by the District Post. John Rimmer, spokesman for the wheel project says: “This fabulously exciting initiative is designed to really put Horsham on the global leisure map and is the central part of the town’s SEP (Strategic Entertainment Plan). When the major North Horsham development is completed there will be many more residents and we need to ensure that enhanced amusement infrastructure is ready for the enjoyment of the new arrivals. Under the dynamic SEP the Horsham Wheel, with its giant swinging gondolas and other inspiring innovations will enable Horsham to lead the British entertainment industry towards the middle of the 21st
century. The 200 metre height of the wheel will dwarf most similar attractions around the world and give customers an unrivalled and uninterrupted view across both the stunning new housing schemes surrounding the town and our beautiful countryside.” However, the District Post understands that while the zip wire project providing an exhilarating ride from the mast above the Horsham Wheel to the top of the spire of the former St Marks church will go ahead, the proposed roller skating alley down the middle of the Causeway has been shelved. Controversially, though, the major entertainment development will proceed in Horsham Park – featuring the Death Dive, Tsunami Surge and Flying Fury. But, the impact will be mitigated by creating the necessary 2000 car park spaces beneath the Park. Planning Officer April Prime was unavailable for comment when we went to press.

Students and staff acknowledged the contribution of a well-loved friend of their school when £2million art classrooms were named after him. Graham Baird is a highly popular chairman of governors at Collyer’s college in Horsham and took an active part and keen interest in its development. Mr Baird’s contribution was acknowledged when Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham, opened the Graham Baird Building. Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “Graham Baird’s involvement with the governing body at Collyer’s is legendary. First appointed as a governor in March 1986 by the Local Education Authority, he became a Foundation Governor, appointed by the Trustees of the Collyer Endowment, in 1994. “Graham’s illustrious career as governor has led him to be chair of Finance and General Purposes, Nominations, Premises, Appeals, Vice Chair of Trustees and of course Chair of the Governing Body. “He leads quietly, always seeing himself as part of the wider team. He respects the role of other governors, the Principal, SMT members, the wider staff and has an understanding of the challenges facing the College. “ She told Mr Baird: “ We owe you a great deal Graham for your support with successive building projects and a small reward will be the formal opening of a building dedicated to your name.” Mr Baird said: “It is a great honour and a privilege to have a building named after you, especially as it is following in the footsteps of such
The man who runs charity services for older people in Horsham district got from behind his desk to raise funds . Age UK Horsham District’s “Hubs and Clubs” administrator Neil Wannell ran the Surrey Half Marathon, one of more than 4,500 runners, who took part in all manner of costumes and charity colours. Neil, who raised several hundred pounds, says: “As a charity Age UK Horsham District helps to combat loneliness and isolation for those in their later years. The people who use our services say that we are an indispensable part of their weekly or daily routine, if they didn’t have our Lavinia House Club, for example, to visit they would
feel very isolated and alone. “I’ve been running now for about three years it has been really good for me and is helping me to lose the Christmas weight from five years ago, just another three stone to go. Now I feel it’s time to give something back to the charity that has given me so much. “I joined the charity two years ago as a volunteer and grew very fond of the members and have made some great friends, I was lucky enough to be offered the administrative position the Lavinia House Club and have never looked back. “I have learnt so much over my time here and really appreciate what they do for the over 50’s, so when a fundraising opportunity arose I jumped at the chance.” Janice Leeming, Chief Executive Officer of Age UK Horsham District, said: “Neil is such a star for choosing to support Age UK Horsham District through his half marathon challenge. All his training paid off and he is delighted that he completed the run in 3 hours and 6 seconds. Fundraisers such as Neil are vital to us to keep our free services running across Horsham District, and we thank him for what he has collected in sponsorship so far.” Neil pictured taking a breather.

Bravo! Horsham shows “Italiano” style despite storm
Horsham turned on “splendida” Italian style as a splash of Continental colour brightened the Easter weekend despite capricious weather. Shoppers at Piazza Italia enjoyed the best conditions on a sunny Good Friday. But there was good support overall despite changeable weather on Saturday and Monday when a mixture of hail, showers, bursts of sun and gusting wind arrived. This included a brief but disruptive Storm Katie that forced a modified show on Easter Monday. Pride of place in the showcase of food, drink, and attractive vehicles was taken by displays of distinctive and colourful cars throughout the three-day showcase of the best of Italian produce. Names like Maserati and Alfa Romeo were on display as well as stunning and sleek scooters. Good Friday brought the elegance of 70 classic Ferraris, including a Ferrari 250SWB worth just under £7 million. As a bonus 250 Ducati Owners Club Italian motorbikes thundered through the Carfax on the way to their own parking area in the Bishopric. Saturday saw 30 plus supercars, courtesy of The Children’s Trust’s Supercar event supporters, and about 40 Minis, organised by the Italian Job.com, create exciting features with the Italian and local produce markets trading strongly despite sometimes miserable conditions. The forecast high winds and rain led the organisers to relocate many of the outside activities into Easter Pop-Up units in Swan Walk to ensure entertainment went ahead. Storm related problems dealt with by the event team on Monday included a temporary closure of
West Street while a dangerous scaffold was made safe, cordons put under sections of wind damaged artwork in East Street, preventing
The enormous crowds who attended with their support and enthusiasm proved why Horsham is regarded as one of the best places to live in the UK display use, and groups of display cars being led in via Guildford Road as Worthing Road had been blocked by a fallen tree.

Three children’s charities, Chestnut Tree House, The Children’s Trust and Winston’s Wish were supported by businesses and drivers over the weekend and in particular by new event partners, the Sporting Bears whose car owners provided ‘Dream Rides’ on Good Friday and Easter Monday, alone raising more than £1700. Throughout the weekend, the event’s entertainers produced some wonderful performances under their ‘Ten of the Best’ billing. Tricia Youtan, chairman of Horsham District Council said: “What a fantastic event Horsham District Council and its partners put on. The enormous crowds who attended with their support and enthusiasm proved why Horsham is regarded as one of the best places to live in the UK.”

Helping little Emily Dame Vera’s charity has a ball lead a better life Entertainers
Emily Milner
Supporters are raising money to help a youngster living with a tough start in life. Nicola and Carl Milner from Horsham are raising funds for the charity Just4Children to help daughter Emily, who has cerebral palsy, in order to give her the brightest and easiest future possible. Emily was born in March
2012 at 29 weeks weighing only 2lb. An early ultrasound and subsequent MRI confirmed that she had significant brain damage known as PVL. Cerebral palsy was suspected but it was not until October 2012 it was confirmed that Emily did indeed have cerebral palsy. Nicola said: “Emily amazes us every day. She can talk for England, sit up independently for short periods and can fourpoint kneel. She uses a manual wheelchair and this gives her independence. “Emily attends a special school twice a week and mainstream nursery for another two giving her the best of both worlds. “We have recently been told that it is unlikely Emily will ever walk independently and we need to focus on adapting our home as our local council refuse to help. “Our first job is making our garden and driveway accessible for Emily’s wheelchair. Emily also desperately needs specialist equipment and extra therapies.” Donations may be made through http://just4children.org/children-helped-2016/hope-foremily/

Christopher Biggins with Cat Bristow
Supporters of Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity at Billingshurst raised £15,331 for the charity at its Spring Ball. Actor Christopher Biggins joined the entertainers at the Felbridge Hotel and Spa in East Grinstead. Catherine Bristow, the charity’s Events Fundraiser said: “It was simply an amazing night, the gumption and enthusiasm of our guests was phenomenal. I am truly humbled by the support we have received and the generosity of our guests. The moment Andrew
Maxwell, parent of Henry who attends the school, shared his story on stage you could hear a pin drop. It was truly emotional and inspiring and once he had finished his speech there was not one person sitting in their seat. The standing ovation really said it all.” The charity said it would like to thank its sponsors including, Toytota Motorline Horsham, Spofforths, Penningtons Manches, Business Pulse, Richard and Lynn Harvey, Gordon and Penny Moss, International Diplomatic Supplies
Ltd, Lpg Photography, Gill Pike Florists, Vivien of Holloway and the many other companies and supporters who kindly donated their time, skills and prizes. Entertainers included Christopher Biggins, Mickie Driver, the Swingtime Sweethearts, Katherine Samuelson, Band Fever and DJ Alex Ansell. Anyone interested in next year’s event may contact the charity at Catherine.bristow@dvlcc.org.uk or call 01403 780444. Pictures by LPG photography.

New firefighters graduate into service Six formers win award for school
Families in Horsham and the rest of West Sussex have new firefighters to help protect them. Six retained, or part-time, firefighters have been allocated to stations after their intensive train-
ing course. Among those who attended a graduation ceremony at East Preston fire station was Jake CareyMatthews, from Henfield. Pictured left to right are Lee

Warning over forced change to academies Pupils will gain nothing from schools being forced to become academies, says a union official. Maggi Ferncombe, UNISON Regional Secretary for the South East said: “Government proposals to force all schools to become Academies, outside of Local Authority Control, will not improve teaching and learning”, “The government constantly claims that changing schools to academy status, will automatically make them better. But many schools judged outstanding by Ofsted have seen standards decline since becoming academies, including 25% of those inspected in 2015. “This is nothing more than flawed Tory Party ideology, which
will see all schools taken out of the control of democratically elected Local Authorities. “Forcing 15,000 schools out of Local Authority control is neither guaranteed to improve teaching
The government constantly claims that changing schools to academy status, will automatically make them better. and learning standards, nor ensure better financial management.” Commenting on the Chancel-
lor’s proposal to extend the school day, Maggi said: ““Many schools already extend their day by providing breakfast, after school and homework clubs. These clubs are now at risk of being removed due to financial pressures on schools, which are a direct result of government cuts to school budgets. “This announcement is likely to mean yet more work for school staff, who already work long hours, and will do nothing to improve morale or standards”
Farlington School in Horsham has been given an award by the website Best-schools.co.uk. The crystal award was given to Farlington as it appeared in the website’s Top 20 All Girls Boarding Schools for A Levels.
Louise Higson, Farlington Headmistress, said: “We are delighted to receive this award. Our girls in the Sixth Form work exceptionally hard and it is rewarding for this to be recognised by an external organisation.”

Car bumpers make modern art Firewalkers raise funds Pupils at the Tate Modern
Art from car bumpers and wool gave students an eye-opening introduction to modern art. Pupils from Farlington School’s Prep 4 visited Tate Modern in
London to find out more about the subject. They were surprised to find such a huge variety of paintings and sculptures on display.
BREAKING NEWS CLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS
They report that there were some weird and wonderful exhibits to study and the sculpture ‘Behold’ by Sheela Gowda was quite unexpected. The girls said they could not believe that she created art from car bumpers and wool. The pupils discussed the artists’ use of colour, line and shape, and compared the work of different artists such as Richter, Rothko and Metzger. They also made insightful comments about how colours can create different moods. It was fascinating to look at the work of famous artists such as Picasso and Mondrian, and to think about how the girls could create artwork in a similar style. The school said: “It was a really enjoyable trip and the girls came away feeling more confident about their own artwork.”
for young children Camera shy fund raisers
Fund raisers took a walk with a difference to raise more than £9,000 to help vulnerable young children. Family support charity HomeStart says after totting up the sums that it is delighted at the success of their ‘Fire Walk’ held at Horsham Rugby Club to raise funds for the work of supporting vulnerable young children and their families. Last year Home-Start helped hundreds of local children, with its team of trained volunteers offering support in the family home. Home-Start Fundraising Manager Jacquie Thomas said: “We want to make sure we can continue helping local families in the future. Backing from our local community for events like this is vital for us to meet the increasing demand for our service. We are so grateful to
everyone involved in the Fire Walk - the 39 brave walkers, their sponsors and the team of community volunteers who ran activities on the night. They all made it a great success.”The ‘Fire Walk’ is just one of the challenge activities that the charity is organising in 2016, as it asks local people to get involved and give their support. Jacqui said: “We are particularly excited about Gauntlet Games that’s coming up in August – it’s a fun obstacle course which people can join without needing to train and we’re aiming to get a big team together, as we’re the charity partner for the Games.”Anyone interested in supporting Home-Start may find out about all their fundraising events at www.homestartchams.org.uk/events/, or call them on 01293 416327.

Young brothers get Olympic boost Shaggy dog story of
Two Horsham sailing brothers have been boosted in their quest to ultimately join Britain’s Olympic classes sailing elite. Leon Stein, 15, and his brother Robin, 11, have received Royal Yachting Association South East Youth Training Fund Performance bursaries. They are given in recognition of their achievements and potential, and to help fund their ongoing participation in events and training activities to develop their talent. The brothers continue to prove their potential in the two-person
RS Feva class and Topper oneperson class respectively. Both are junior classes that sailing’s national governing body, the Royal Yachting Association, supports on the pathway to Olympic Classes sailing. Last year they were both selected to represent the West Sussex Schools and Youth Sailing Association at the National School Sailing Association National Youth Regatta at Rutland, Robin in the Topper and Leon in the RS Feva XD. They both also took part in the West Sussex association’s schools
regatta at Felpham in September, helping their club, Crawley Mariners, finish second team overall. The boys were familiar faces at many regional Topper class Open Coaching events and open meetings too. With the 2016 season getting underway next month, the bursaries provide the perfect kickstart. Diana Thompson, Principal at Crawley Mariners dinghy sailing club said: “Both boys can be relied upon to give a good impression for our club and the Topper association whenever they attend events. “Leon has been helping at Saturday Clubs, introducing some older Topper sailors to try Fevas while Robin helps newer Topper sailors, assisting with their rigging and getting them afloat. The boys’ perseverance and temperament make them excellent role models for younger sailors. The whole family is very committed to the club, with both parents also undertaking a number of invaluable volunteer roles to support our activities.” The boys are pictured at sailing sessions. They received their awards from the Royal Yachting Association South East Secretary Tony Row. For more information about opportunities at Crawley Mariners YC visit www.cmyc.co.uk or to discover how to get into sailing across the South East visit www.rya.org.uk.

Herbert canine star
The UK’s best-loved shaggy dog helped raise money for very ill children and mark a 110th trading anniversary in a village. Herbert made new fans in Billingshurst High Street, when he posed for photographs with local children and helped raise money for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. The occasion was the fifth anniversary of the current owners of Austens Home-
hardware, and the fifth firm of ironmongers to have occupied the same High Street premises consecutively since 1906. Herbert is the newest in a line of seven Old English Sheepdogs, commonly known as ‘Dulux dogs’ because of long association in the minds of fans with the paint advertisement, that have become family icons in Britain since 1961. More than 60 local children starred in pictures with Herbert and his attractive long coat at the weekend and their mums and dads made donations to Chestnut Tree House Children’s House, which Austens matched. Dean Phillips, retail support manager at Austens, said :“We are continuing a century-long family ironmonger tradition in the village, and it was great to see dozens of children with Herbert helping raise money for other children who are not so fortunate. We were thrilled to have our Billingshurst High Street neighbour, Chestnut Tree House, as partners”.
Items should be clean, dry and loose;
not tied up in plastic bags!

Sleep out raises £13,000 for homeless
The Horsham group Fifteen people slept rough for one night at Horsham and helped raise more than £13,000 for disadvantaged people. A group of brave souls spent one night sleeping out as part of YMCA DownsLink Group’s Sleep Easy fundraising event. The charity held three sleepouts on the same night in Horsham, Brighton and Hove and Guildford, with a total of sixty people sleeping out across all three locations. So far, the sleepers have raised over £13,000 for the group’s work with homeless and disadvantaged young people.

English breakfast for all the sleepers in the morning. The YMCA said that giving up creature comforts for just one night was hardly a true taste of homelessness. Although it was cold and uncomfortable refreshments and facilities were laid on, and the volunteer ‘rough sleepers’ were in a safe environment. And there was the knowledge that the next night would be spent in a warm bed. But it said as the sleepers settled down in their cardboard boxes and the temperature started to drop the realisation that so many people do this night after night was really eye opening. After the event one of the participants said: “I can’t imagine how it must feel not to know where you will be sleeping every night. I think these people are very brave and need to be given a chance to get back on their feet”. The money raised from the Horsham Sleep Easy will go to YMCA DownsLink Group’s Positive Placements Project that matches volunteer mentors from the local community with young people living in charity’s supported housing projects to help them gain employment. Sussex artist on display at Horsham Museum
A leading Sussex watercolour artist who became an official war artist has his work on display at Horsham Museum until May. Gordon Rushmer’s work has been exhibited by Tate Britain London and The Imperial War Museum, and purchased by HM Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Royal Archive, the House of Lords, National Library Wales, and others. Now visitors to Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery have a rare opportunity to acquire new work by one of this country’s leading watercolourists,
work that reflects both his life as a resident of the Weald and life as an official war artist in Bosnia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. The exhibition A Wealden Artist Goes to War, which opens on Good Friday, explores through the most delicate of artistic mediums, the watercolour, the military conflict that has dominated the world stage for the last 20 years as well as providing a reflection on everyday Wealden life by someone who has experienced that. It is supported by Toovey’s Fine Art Valuers and
Auctioneers . Gordon’s war experiences began when he was asked by asked by elite Dutch forces to paint their war activities in Bosnia. For the next 15 years he wore military gear, trained with the professionals and captured the intensity and boredom of military life. Gordon said: “It was an unforgettable experience working alongside British and Dutch elite forces with survival being the number one priority. It provided the opportunity to capture different situations through the eyes of the people on the frontline. I was not there to present a sanitised, public relations version of what was happening.” One painting “The King’s Palace, Kabul” won the Rowland Hilder Award from the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in London. Gordon said: ““After working in such difficult, dangerous and intense conditions, it was a relief to return to the more pastoral side of my work. I was able to get back to my roots with a fresh intensity at the start of another era in my professional life.” Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10-5, admission free. The Museum will be open on Good Friday, when the exhibition starts, and Easter Monday but closed on other public holidays. Some of the works are pictured.

Passers-by may hold clues to watches theft Two of stolen watches
Greenfield sites not best Focusing on brownfield sites is the quickest way to solve Sussex’s housing shortage according to new research. Director of the Council for the Protection of Rural England Sussex Kia Trainor says the report proves that brownfield is best and is calling on local councils to only allow building on green fields as a last resort. Much of the new housing ain and around Horsham and villages in the district has been on fields rather than brownfield, or previously developed, sites. The research by analysts Glenigan was commissioned by the group to compare the speed of construction on both greenfield and
brownfield sites across England. The results showed that brownfield developments were completed on average six months faster than greenfield ones. Kia said: “This new research challenges the widely held view that developing brownfield sites is too slow to be profitable. “These sites can be quicker to develop and are also often well located in terms of access to services and infrastructure. “At CPRE Sussex we believe that local councils should be encouraging development in brownfield sites before greenfield sites in the beautiful Sussex countryside, and that the government should be doing more to support this through
changes to the National Planning Policy Framework and other mechanisms.”Kia points out that in February the Housing and Planning Minister Brandon Lewis stated that ‘The framework…makes it clear that local authorities should prioritise suitable brownfield land wherever practicable.’ She said: “ However, despite this reassurance CPRE says this policy is not working. “Last Year CPRE Sussex highlighted the difficulties experienced by local councils who had granted thousands of planning permissions but were unable to speed the process us due to the behaviour of developers who are keen to develop Greenfield sites.”
People using a busy road may hold clues to a burglary in which six designer watches were stolen. Police are appealing for witnesses after the theft in Crawley Road, Horsham. And they think people walking or driving at the spot might remember seeing something unusual. A three bedroom house was broken into between 8.15am and 5.05pm on March 15. A rear patio door was smashed to gain entry before six designer watches and two bracelets were

Memories power Vietnam charity walkers Trailblazers will have memories at their shoulders as they begin the first overseas challenge for St Catherine’s Hospice. The team of 15 will head for the Vietnam trek after completing their final training for the Crawley-based hospice. Taking up the challenge of hiking through beautiful countryside in Northern Vietnam, the team hopes to raise £50,000. The hospice says that for every day they walk, they’ll be paying for five hours of community care, allowing a patient to be looked after in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their own home. Some will have personal memories of relatives or friends driving them on. Gerry Baker is walking in memory of his wife, Teresa, who was cared for by St Catherine’s. Gerry, who already volunteers for St Catherine’s as a gardener and street collector, said: “My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer some 12 years ago and regularly visited the Lymphoedema nurse at St Catherine’s. Unfortunately after a long period of remission, she was diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago. In her Training in Snowdon final few
months, this spread throughout her bones and brain and she received palliative care from the hospice. In early January 2015, she became an Inpatient at St Catherine’s where she passed away on 30 January. I want to give back to the hospice after all of the unbelievable love and care given to my wife, as well as our family and friends.” To support the Hanoi Hikers in their challenge, please visit their team’s Justgiving page at: https://www.justgiving.com/HanoiHikers/ or for more information about how you can take part in a St Catherine’s challenge event please visit: www.stch.org.uk or call Hannah Cooke in the Events Team on 01293 447355. Michaela Clements from Horsham is one of St Catherine’s Event Fundraisers and has been instrumental in organising the trip. She said:
“I’ve never visited Vietnam before and I’m looking forward to supporting the Hanoi Hikers to have the best trip ever! Last year, I took on the London2Brighton 100km walk, so I’m definitely up for the challenge.” Also In the team is Heather Doughton-Pearce, who works in St Catherine’s HR team and has been busy fundraising for her trip. She said: “All the funds are going to make such a difference when they reach the hospice. When I’m knee deep in the jungle with leeches in my trousers and 200 mosquito bites, having not showered for days, I’ll be smiling, thinking about what an honour it is to be able to help such a fantastic cause.” The team is Michaela Clements from Horsham, Gerry Baker Crawley, Tori Bailey Crawley, Jane Bond-Roberts , Crawley, Verity Keys Salfords Kelly Doughton Crawley, Linda Parker Balcombe, Janet Mayhew Crawley, Kieran O’Sullivan , East Grinstead, Naomi Southcombe Hassocks, Philip Goerlach East Grinstead, Heather Doughton-Pearce Copthorne, Sharon Anderson Crawley, Janice Sullivan Crawley, and Nancy Conway Hassocks.

Southwater Woodland Walk bags a share of a £11.5 million carrier bag fund. The Southwater Woodland Walk (promoted by Southwater Parish Council) have bagged £10,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. The supermarket teamed up with Groundworks to launch its Bags of Help imitative, which saw grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects. Eight million shoppers voted in stores up and down the country and now that the results have been announced, work can begin on bringing the project to life. The Southwater Woodland Walk will use land in and around Pondfarm Gill in Southwater, maintaining the rugged character of this land, whilst adding additional signposts, finger mazes, information boards and magnifying-glass stations. Southwater Parish Council wants to both promote and protect this wonderful resource, and provide an informing, engaging and safe place for all who use it. A spokesperson for the parish council said: “We were so pleased that our pitch made it through to the public vote and so proud that we were ultimately awarded £10,000 of funding for this project. We believe that residents, and the wider community, will benefit from the improvements we hope to make and we look forward to starting work soon.” Caroline Silke, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has
been a fantastic success. We have been overwhelmed by the response of our customers and the feedback has been brilliant. We can’t wait to see the money being put to use, bringing these projects to life. Nominations for the next round of the initiative will open in April, and we look forward to helping a further round of groups and projects bag their share of the bag charge fund.” A token vote system ran in store during February and March, with customers choosing which group they most wanted to recieve the top award, using a token given to them at the check-out. Tesco estimated that around eight million votes were cast in stores across the UK. Groundwork’s national chief executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “We have been delighted to have been involved in the Bags of Help project. It has been wonderful to follow the projects through the application process to the final announcement. This is money which will go directly back into the communities, up and down the country, creating places to meet people, be active, play or simply relax. This initiative is really putting something back into the local environment, transforming greenspaces and helping the community at a grass-roots level.” Nominations and applications for the next round of Bags of Help funding will open on April 18. As well as applying direct, suggestions for projects can also be nominated by people living locally.

Slippers at the ready, but don’t get too comfy- be prepared for a toe tapping musical comedy full of romance, as HAODS (Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society) presents ‘The Pajama Game’ at The Capitol this April. The Pajama Game is a timeless musical made famous by the 50’s film adaptation starring Doris Day. Set in the Sleep Tite Pajama factory, it tells the story of a workplace romance put to the test. Macho factory Superintendent Sid Sorokin (Daniel Chandler) has fallen head over heels with feisty union rep Babe Williams (Rachel Farrant) but when the workers are refused a seven-and-a-half-cent an hour raise, Babe and Sid are stuck at opposing ends of the conflict. Supported by a host of entertaining characters, including flirtatious secretary Gladys (Beth Landskroner), her jealous long suffering ob-
sessive compulsive boyfriend Hines (Martin Bracewell) and mother hen of Sleep-Tite, Mabel (Amy Blaskett). This light hearted musical is bursting with energy. With classic numbers, including ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’, ‘I’m Not At All In Love’ and ‘7 ½ Cents’, the show is packed with catchy tunes and big dance numbers. There’s certainly no time for forty winks. Director Yvonne Chadwell, says: “As we move into spring and the sun is shining, we are on the final lap towards our production of Pajama Game. Bringing life to the lovely libretto and score is easythere is so much to work with; ‘Once a Year Day’ and ‘Steam Heat’ are two of the big chorus numbers, however the principals also have challenges with ‘There Once was a Man’, ‘Her is’ and ‘I Would Trust Her’. The whole cast are working hard to shine for their audiences!
As a director, I am justly proud of the whole team, both on and off stage, and with Musical Director, Brian Steel, and the cast, we hope to do justice to this lovely show in just a few weeks’ time.” The Pajama Game is on at The Capitol, Horsham from April 19 23, every evening at 7:30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm. To get your tickets, please contact the Capitol Box Office on 01403 750 220 or from www.thecapitolhorsham. com - and feel free to come in your pajamas!
HAODS have been entertaining Horsham for over 60 years with most recent productions including ‘White Christmas’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Sweeney Todd’. For more information on HAODS visit www. haods.co.uk, or on Facebook and Twitter @HAODSHorsham.

More than a tribute to The Rolling Stones The Counterfeit Stones will be at The Capitol, Horsham on April 7, celebrating their 25th anniversary, this year, with yet another “Sham Rock” experience, 25X5. The band formed in October 1991, and although there have been some personnel changes since then, they’ve played most major countries in the world and been booked by multinationals, British Royalty, and some of the most famous international celebrities. The Counterfeit Stones are more than a tribute to the Rolling Stones, they’re a complete re-enactment. With a healthy smattering of ‘Spinal Tap’ humour, their
performances take on an almost cartoon-like air. Their skillfully mixed cocktail of classic hits, retro costume and humour, continues to intoxicate young and old alike 100% proof that a good shot always hits the target. Even Mick Jagger himself quoted The Counterfeit Stones as being, “The Most famous Stones band in England”. They’ve shared stages with Joe Cocker, Iggy Pop, Blur, ZZ Top, Bryan Ferry and many more. tion is The theatre producessentially a mockumentary of the Rolling
Stones’ colourful history from 1962. The repetoire, instruments and clothes faithfully match those of the originals, and the show has been affectionately described as a masterpiece in ‘fraud rock and hookey nostalgia’. It will take you back if you were there; or make you wish you were, if you weren’t. Why pay a fortune to see originals as ants in a megadome, when, for a fraction of the price, you can smell the sweat of bogus brilliance? “The Most famous Stones band in England” Mick Jagger “Better than the originals” The Guardian

Welsh timber poles keeps those wandering cats from straying
A FORMER helicopter systems engineer has come up with an ingenious system for keeping marauding moggies penned in their own gardens – using wooden poles from a top North Wales timber company. Award-winning Clifford Jones Timber, based in Ruthin, Denbighshire, supply a key component for Sussex-based Katzecure Ltd’s patented containment fencing. The system is based on a series of rotating wooden poles which harmlessly prevent cats climbing out of their owners’ gardens. Since the company was set up back in 2004, it has sold thousands of the systems across the UK and Europe. Founder Andrew Farmer reckons it has saved countless feline lives by stopping them wandering out
onto busy roads or mixing with other cats and picking up potentially fatal diseases. And he’s now planning to make it even more readily available to pet lovers through local installers such as one in Wrexham which is due to go into operation soon. Andrew, 59, originally from Edgmond, near Newport in Shropshire, has a background in electronic engineering and used to design updates for complex radar systems fitted to Sea King helicopters for the UK armed forces. He came up with his Katzecure system about 12 years ago, ironically to stop cats coming into his own garden rather escaping from it. Andrew opted to have the key 75mm diameter wooden poles supplied exclusively by Clifford Jones Timber because of the company’s
high reputation. He said: “They are a good, reliable company and they supply timber from British Forestry Commission land, sourced and manufactured locally which is something I insist on. “All the other parts for the system are also locally sourced, with both the metal brackets for holding the poles and the plastic end caps, which stop prying little paws getting into the mechanism, coming from craftsmen in Worthing, near our base in the Horsham area. “There’s nothing else like the Katzecure system on the market at the moment and I’ve had it patented. “Since we started we’ve supplied literally thousands of the systems all over the UK, from the tip of Cornwall, through places like
Anglesey in Wales and all the way up to Scotland. “We’re also selling it in Europe and I have an official local distributor in Holland. “People can either ask us to come out and install the system for them after we carry out a survey or they can buy the parts from us on a DIY basis. Clifford Jones Timber have 64 staff at Ruthin where, as well as four million round timber fence posts, they produce gates, laminated timber for the construction and outdoor play industries and dried logs and wood briquettes. They use timber from forests all over the UK and also have a second site at Gretna in Scotland where they employ a further ten staff. They send their fence posts as far afield as the Falkland Islands while

other clients for their timber products have included Center Parcs, a luxury treehouse builder, award-winning vineyards and a deck-chair company. Alan Jones, whose father founded the company in 1948, said: “Every piece of timber that comes through these gates is used. There isn’t any wasted and there aren’t many industries that can say that.” Katzecure Ltd currently has a team of six expert installers and Andrew said he was in the process of appointing a local representative based in Wrexham. He added: “The system is tailor-made to the requirements of individual customers and is very effective at providing a safe haven for cats in their own gardens.

Horsham Cycling blossoming Horsham Cycling Club continues to grow
Champion’s impressive home winning run finally ends U13 Horsham Hawks 58 – 68 U13 Crawley Cagers Youth Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cycling have had a busy winter with indoor training boosting fitness on gym bikes at Crawley’s K2, interactive Ride Leader training and the increasingly popular programme of Sunday morning rides, starting at 9am in the Carfax. New Chairman John Chaplin tells the District Post: “Last year we celebrated our 10th anniversary and we’re going from strength to strength with a record 245 members. In 2015 we sent off 288 Sunday rides with 2169 riders completing almost 90,000 miles!” And during spring and summer HC will be even busier, with a full schedule of events augmenting the Sunday
rides, including off road cycling and Time Trials (with the Open Competition in June). This year for the first time HC will be running a joint Time Trial with neighbouring clubs from Cranleigh and Dorking and a bid has been submitted to enter two teams in August’s Olympics inspired London-Surrey 100. Before that there will be the spring weekend trip to Winchester when most of the 25 participants will cycle down on the Friday, stay in a local college ahead of a ride on Saturday and return to Horsham on Sunday. In July there will be the annual Down Hill Challenge and the more testing Dunwich Dynamo overnight ride through London out to the Suffolk coast, followed by weekend visits to both the Isle of
Wight and Belgium in September. Meanwhile, the annual post ride lunch will be on June 12 with other social get-togethers arranged at regular intervals. Last year John Chaplin set off once a month criss-crossing the South East with 100 mile forays to castles, palaces and cathedrals, invariably accompanied by other members. This year John plans to head for water – reservoirs, sea, lakes and rivers, summing up: “HC is inclusive, encouraging everyone to get out and enjoy the fresh air whatever their cycling ability and interests.” New members receive a warm welcome and, remarkably, HC have held their sub at the original level - £15. For full details of HC news and activities see www. horshamcycling.co.uk.
After securing the 2015-16 Sussex League title with a game to spare the Horsham Hawks impressive three year home winning streak finally came to an end courtesy of a tall and strong Crawley Cagers side. In thier final league game of the season Horsham set off at a blistering pace taking an early 14-6 advantage to close the first quarter with confident scores from Fin Bennett and Josh Tavolieri. Further baskets from Tavolieri and an acrobatic layup from Antonio Lozzi extended the Horsham advantage to 20-7 early in the second period. The Cagers were quick to respond with a 15-2 run, cutting the Hawks lead to just two points, before a late score from Bennett saw the hosts go up 25-21 at the half. Two quick second half baskets from Horsham’s Harry Rose helped extend the lead to 31-23 before the
Crawley offence went on a 12-1 run to take a four point lead. Bennett responded for Horsham with two quick baskets of his own to tie the game at 37-37. In the final quarter both teams shot accurately including eight straight points from Horsham’s Josh Lea-Clayton and a strong drive from Charlotte Wilcox to keep the Hawks just a single point adrift at 50-49. After narrowly losing to the Hawks earlier this season it was the Cagers who showed tremendous composure to extend their lead and finally bring to an end Horsham’s incredible three year home winning streak. As Sussex League Champions the Horsham Hawks have the number one seed in the playoffs which sees a cup semi-final fixture against Worthing and the opportunity to play for a second piece of silverware this season. Scorers: Fin Bennett – 21, Josh Tavolieri – 14, Josh Lea-Clayton – 11, Antonio Lozzi – 5, Harry Rose – 5, Charlotte Wilcox – 2, Meghan Stevens, Miguel Venturini, Oliver Brooker.

YM tighten grip on top four finish YM’s Sam Schaaf opens the scoring
Harvey Roffe lifts the trophy for M2 Computing
Photo by Clive Turner Saturday March 26 - – SCFL Premier Division Lancing 1 – 2 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter Horsham YMCA’s hopes of securing a top four Premier Division finish were boosted as they moved four points clear of fifthplaced Lancing with a battling 2-1 win at Culver Road. All of the game’s goals came during a lively first forty-five minutes, with YM front men Sam Schaaf and Phil Johnson netting either
side of a twenty-five yard wonder strike from Lancers’ captain Naim Rouane. YM remain two points off third spot Newhaven, but can take confidence from a diligent display as they enter the final five fixtures of the season. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “It was a really gutsy performance and it’s a shame it is five games from the end of the season that we chose to do it. Everything was forced upon us again today. We lost Matt Crane at 11.50am this morning due to a security alert at work, and then we lost Dean Carden after half an hour, with
Gedders (Luke Gedling) also still struggling. We were really down to the bare bones and yet we adapted well. When we lost Dean at the back, we went 3-5-2 and it worked well. I think the result was about right. I wouldn’t say that we were fortunate at all. In fact Schaafy (Sam Schaaf) missed from six yards in the second half and that could have made it 3-1 and an even more convincing score line.” YM Team: Fox, D. Sullivan, Carden (Budge 32), Gathern, Evans, Smith, Wright, Hibbert, Donaldson, Johnson, Schaaf. Unused subs: Gedling.
Harvey Roffe is Winter Series Karting Champion
Junior Karting Harvey Roffe has been crowned the Winter Series Champion at both the Bayford Meadows and Qleisure Kart circuits in the jun-
ior club championships for the age groups 8-13. In what has been an exciting season for Harvey he won first place for Silverstone class at the Bayford Meadow Junior Winter Karting Championships and completed the double at the Qleisure circuit near Brighton. The 11-year old from Warnham has had a dominate run through the winter winning multiple rounds of each championship to walk away with the crowns. Harvey has been racing for just three years and competes at a number of junior kart races across the South East with sponsorship from M2 Computing. Greg Roffe, Director of M2 and father of Harvey, comments “We are thrilled with Harvey’s achievement this season and he’s as pleased as punch with his new trophies. He is looking forward to a bright racing future, which offers fantastic exposure for the M2 Computing brand as his main sponsor.”

Nervy Hornets take a step nearer the title Saturday March 26 – SCFL Premier Division Horsham 1 – 0 Worthing United Football Dave Smith- Sports Editor An eventful first 5 minutes that saw two wasted chances for the visitors and a Horsham goal gave little indication of the next 85 minutes that turned out to be that of little excitement or skill; the awful weather conditions playing a big part in that. Horsham did dominate the match and it would have been an injustice if the Hornets had not taken all three points but there were some nervy moments for the home supporters as their team unusually miss-fired in front of goal. After United’s Aaron Tugnutt and Owen Callaghan had both blasted their chances well over the crossbar a decent passing move involving Alex Duncan, Kieron Pamment and Terry Dodd saw Darren Boswell played through to beat ‘keeper Evans. The remainder of the half saw Horsham dominate the play and although a few chances came their way there was a lack of cutting edge to the Hornets play leaving Boswell’s early strike separating the teams at half time.
The break did little to improve the play as the second half continued in the same vein; the weather conditions becoming more extreme by the minute. It was in fact not until the 56th minute that any keeper was called into second half action, Boswell’s fierce shot being palmed away by Evans. Worthing had their best chance of the match just on the hour but when faced with just Horsham ‘keeper James Shaw to beat Callaghan somehow fell over and Ashley Jones cleared the danger. Horsham continued to dominate the ball but they also failed to produce a second goal leaving any United attack to lead to nervous groans from the Horsham faithful. It was with some relief therefore when referee Cox sounded the final whistle and the all important three points were safely in the Horsham bag. Those three points became even more important when the news of Eastbourne Town’s 1-0 defeat at lowly Wick & Barnham came through. Although there will be nervous edgy matches to come, and the race is certainly not over, it does seem the tide has turned in the Hornets’ favour. Horsham Team: Shaw, Duncan, Knee, Clark, Jones, Farmer, Storrie, Hunt, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell.

League title is Horsham’s to lose after big derby win Joe Shelley rises above the YM defence to open the scoring
Photo by John Lines Monday March 28 – SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 – 4 Horsham Football Dave Smith- Sports Editor Kicking off with the knowledge that title rivals Eastbourne Town had been held 0-0 by Eastbourne United, Horsham knew that the league’s top spot was there for the taking. With Horsham YM effectively out of the promotion hunt, but still looking for a top four finish, the Hornets took full advantage although the four goal margin was a little flattering. It was not the greatest of matches but the final score - for both sides – was the always going to be the important measure and with it the right to local bragging rights. The opening twenty minutes were very nervy with no real clear cut chances for either team although YM ‘keeper Mark Fox stopped Kieran Pamment early on. At the other end a Dan Sullivan free kick and an effort from Luke Donaldson was the only real up the numbers The atrocious conditions of wind and rain meant that although both sides tried to play constructive football there was little chance of anything other than putting in a shift and hoping for the best. After an uneventful first half and with the strong wind at their backs Heath came out in determined mood and Martin Mutungi powered in a right foot shot from the edge of the penalty area 4 minutes into the
goal threats. The game became increasingly scrappy with many poor passes and bad decision making leaving the game in need of something to put it on track; that came on 22 minutes with the opening goal. After some excellent work from Mark Knee the Horsham man crossed from the goal line for Joe Shelley to head past Fox. The goal seemed to lift YM more than Horsham and they created a few decent chances to equalise before the break. Horsham ‘keeper James Shaw dropped a cross which produced a frantic scramble before the ball was cleared and then Shaw pulled off a good save from Jerome Beccles and again from Donaldson just before the half time whistle. Horsham came out the more purposeful in the second period and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead within 5 minutes. Darren Boswell played in Horsham’s burly front man Terry Dodd who shielded the ball well before turning to fire past Fox into the corner of the net. In a second half that lacked any purposeful passages of play from either side the match was sealed on 64 minutes when Shelley again showed his ability in the air to
head home Mark Knee’s free kick. Five minutes later the convincing victory was completed when some slack defending by YM was punished by Dodd who easily scored his fourteenth goal of the season. Beaten YM manager Buckland commented: “We didn’t do ourselves any justice. We were beaten by the better team on the day, who has been the better team throughout the season. The table doesn’t lie. They’ve put eight goals past us as well, which is a stone wall fact.” So with five matches remaining - two of them against lowly Hailsham Town – the league title is Horsham’s to lose while YM will look again at a ‘nearly’ season and will hope to add a few players, and go again next season. Horsham YMCA Team: Fox, Sullivan (Crane 85) Evans, Gathern, Gunner, Hibbert (Dugdale 65) Wright, Beckles, Schaaf, Johnson (Sullivan 65) Donaldson. Unused subs: Budge, Gedling. Horsham Team: Shaw, Duncan, Knee, Keehan (Smith 88) Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Hunt (Clark 71) Dodd, Pamment, Boswell (Lewis 75). Unused subs: Chadwick, Storrie.
restart that gave ‘keeper Oliver Nicholls no chance. Heath’s second came on the hour mark when Piers McDermott scored from Dean Robinson’s headed flick on, followed shortly afterwards by the third from Tim Martin. Andy Howard was then forced off with a groin strain making way for Grogan before Jake Legrange made it 4-0 three minutes before the end. Hailsham hit a late consola-
tion in the 88th minute through substitute Sheldon Lovett. Heath’s scheduled match against Loxwood on Tuesday night was a victim of the weather with the Leisure Centre pitch being waterlogged. Heath Team: M.Chester, Wicking, J.Robinson, D.Robinson, Howard (Grogan 84), Mcdermott, Weller, Godfrey, Holmes (Legrange 74), Mutingi, Martin.
