Highlights of the Great Daffodil Appeal in the area include people getting together to collect at Tesco, Sainsburys and the town centre, giving more than 70 hours of volunteering. Kate Holdsworth, Community Fundraiser for West Sussex said: “I would like to say a great big thank you to everyone in Horsham for being so generous and kind, by either donating or by being one of our amazing volunteers.”

Young people seeking rented homes will be offered more than 200 on a new private estate near Horsham. Every one of the 227 homes on the latest phase of building at Kilnwood Vale off the A264 will be a private rental property. But before the latest stage of its approval this week people living nearby claimed it would bring trouble to the rest of the estate, which will eventually have about 2500 homes when it is finished. The all-rental homes are part of a move in a relatively new idea to solve the acute shortage of rented properties for young people who are in good jobs but find the excessive cost of buying a home beyond them. Before Horsham district councillors backed the scheme they read a report detailing concerns in more than 30 letters from people living near the proposed site, which is known as phase 2.1B of the Kil-

But the report from planning officers to the North Development Control committee also said: “It is not considered that the development would be likely to have any significant impact on crime and disorder.” And it said of the private rental

scheme: “‘Many of the District’s younger residents could be termed reasonably prosperous, mobile, valuable to the economy but unable to afford full scale house purchase and earning too much to qualify for social housing.”. The report added: “As there is a demand for market level rented properties within the District the Strategic Housing Manager welcomes the proposed development and it is considered that the proposal would assist in meeting a local need for housing, as required by Policy 16 of the Horsham District Planning Framework.” Councillors on the Development Control North committee agreed on Tuesday evening that the scheme by Crest Nicholson should be delegated for approval to the council’s development manager subject to securing a legal agreement and appropriate conditions with the company. The rental estate will have 104 one-bedroom flats or maisonettes, another 104 two –bedroom flats, eight three-bedroom flats, seven three-bedroom terraced houses and four four-bedroom terrace houses, with a communal club house and ball court.

People of Horsham have big hearts, say charity organisers. Marie Curie Nurses in Horsham say they want to want to thank everyone involved in making the 2016 Great Daffodil Appeal a great success. The month long appeal in March saw volunteers out in force to encourage people to make a donation and wear the charity’s daffodil pin to help support people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones. It raised £3, 943.

A Pulborough man living with Type 2 Diabetes is urging people to check their risk of getting it by going online and using Diabetes UK’s Know Your Risk tool. Yesterday was a global awareness day, World Health Day, which this year adopted the theme ‘Beat Diabetes’,. Dennis Chapman turned his shock diagnosis into something positive by supporting the charity and is now its West Sussex Downs Diabetes UK Local Group West Sussex chairman. But he says he wishes such early diagnosis was available then and urges men in particular to take advantage of the technology available. Mr Chapman said: “I am wondering if your readers are aware that although men are at greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes they are less likely than women to check their risk? “I wish I had been able to go online and check mine. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 14 years ago and recognise what a shock to the system this can be. “Recent findings from Diabetes

UK revealed men to be 38% less likely to check their risk of Type 2 than women, so while I recommend everyone does this, I am especially to urge all Sussex men to go online and check their risk. “Diabetes UK estimates there are 7,000 people in West Sussex who have Type 2 but don’t know it. But diagnosis can make all the difference as it means people can start learning about their condition and how to manage it well, giving them the best chance to live a long healthy life and avoid complications. “The most important risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes is being overweight or obese. This is something people can do something about by maintaining a healthy weight through eating a healthy diet and taking regular exercise. “Other risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are ethnicity and family history if you have a parent, child, brother or sister who has diabetes.” Diabetes UK’s Know Your Risk online tool has now been used over one million times. It takes people through seven quick questions and takes less than three minutes to complete. The charity says if anyone does find out her or she is at moderate or high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes they should speak to their GP.Meanwhile 6ft 9ins Royal Engineer from West Sussex has won a volunteering award from the charity for fund raising for diabetes sufferes. Fred Green, 29, was inspired to tackle running challenges to raise more than £1,000 by his wife Phoebe, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at four, and by family members who have type 2.

Barrier hits lorry at level crossing

Train passengers were delayed after a delivery lorry was struck by a barrier on a level crossing. An investigation is under way into how the accident at Lower Station Road, Billingshurst happened. By-standers saw the lorry stop on the crossing, apparently waiting for a space to park outside a nearby store. With part of the lorry still on the crossing the barrier came down on the rear of the truck, causing some damage but not injuring anyone. Passengers had to use replacement buses for several hours while the site was cleared and preliminary investigations carried out at the spot. A spokesman for Network Rail said: “The type of crossing at Billingshurst is a relatively new type of crossing that uses obstacle detection equipment to ensure the safety of people who use it. These crossings are connected to the signalling system and will not allow trains to proceed if anything is wrong. “The crossing at Billingshurst is triggered automatically by an approaching train, in the same way that other automatic crossings are, and the lights flash and the barri-

ers lower. “Clearly, most people pay attention to the lights and the warning siren and they stop before the barriers come down. When the barriers are lowered, then an obstacle detection sensor does a sweep of the crossing to see if it is clear. “If it is not clear, or the barriers are not all the way down, the signals stay red and trains stop. That was why there were delays on the railway on the day of the incident as nothing could run until the crossing was clear. “The obstacle detection adds a layer of safety as it does not rely on CCTV but still allows for crossings to operate quickly and reduce the impact on road and rail traffic.” Services between Horsham and Barnham were not restored to normal until later in the day. Officers from British Transport Police and Sussex Police and engineers from Network Rail were called to deal with the incident. A spokesman for British Transport Police told the Post the driver of the lorry had been interviewed at the scene and investigations were continuing.

Blindfold walk helps sightless war vets On the trail

A charity for blind veterans will be more than £3000 better off because of a special walk by young people. Cadets from Christ’s Hospital school, Horsham, completed a 26-mile sponsored walk while blindfolded to raise money for Blind Veterans UK. The charity helps those who have served in the armed forces to recover their independence after sight loss. A squad of 78 members of the School’s Combined Cadet Force, tackled the gruelling course from the school across the South Downs to the charity’s base on the coast at Brighton. The cadets took it in turns to walk different sections of the walk blindfolded while guided by their friends. Year 13 pupil Elliot Riley organ-

Cllr Tricia Youtan was presented with a new defibrillator from Horsham Community First Responders at the Junior Citizen Week event which was organised by the council in the Drill Hall in Horsham. The council originally incorrectly reported that it had presented the machine, as reported in the Post, and has asked us to correct the misunderstanding. The council, working in partnership with various community partners as part of the Horsham HEARTsafe initiative, is currently facilitating work to improve cardiac arrest survival rates across Horsham district by increasing awareness of heart disease and fund raising to establish more defibrillators. The responders recently made local media headlines when prompt action helped save the life of football commentator Peter Brackley when he collapsed in Horsham.

ised the challenge and he said: “I am so proud of all the cadets for putting in so much effort to raise money and get to the end of the walk. It is great that we were able to raise such a large sum for a local charity doing such valuable work. Completing the walk blindfolded gave us a very limited idea of what it might be like to lose your eye sight.” Major Mark Aggrey, who is the force’s Contingent Commander at the school, said: “Service to others is an important value that the cadet force tries to develop in young people. Events like this help the cadets understand the importance of helping others and the sacrifices soldiers, sailors and airmen make in service to the country.” Blind Veterans UK was founded

in 1915 and the charity’s initial purpose was to help and support soldiers blinded in World War I. But the organisation has gone on to support more than 35,000 blind veterans and their families, spanning World War II to recent conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan. For more than a century, the charity has been providing vital free training, rehabilitation, equipment and emotional support to blind and vision-impaired veterans no matter when they served or how they lost their sight. Sue 39, will have to overcome a confessed strong fear of heights as she and Dave, 47, abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth on May 28 to support Cancer Research UK. It will be their latest fundraiser for the charity, the pair having raised more than £10,000 with previous challenges. Sue, from Billingshurst, said: ‘‘We want to continue to raise money from Cancer Research UK as it is a cause very close to our hearts, as we know it is for many people. “Over the last couple of years we have raised, thanks to great local support, more than £10,000 for Cancer Research UK. We have experienced cancer and the devastating affect it has on families. We decided to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower to raise money for a vital cause, whilst challenging myself to confront my terrible fear of heights’’. Sue and Dave are hoping to raise a further £2,500 for life-saving research to help more men, women and children in West Sussex and across the UK survive the disease. Local people can sponsor their fundraising efforts at http://www. justgiving.com/ suelutman.

We can’t thank Sue and Dave enough for their continued and truly generous support, and want to wish them the very best on the day.” “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer. However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our research.” For further information about Cancer Research UK’s work or to find out how to support the charity, please call 0300 123 1022 or visit cruk.org.

Another gift of life in Horsham First-aid volunteers now have a life-saving machine at the Drill Hall in Horsham. The Horsham Community Responders played a big part in saving the life of retired football commentator Peter Brackley when he collapsed at a recent event in the town. Now the chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Tricia Youtan, has presented a new defibrillator to the group during the Junior Citizen Week organised by the council in the hall. The council, working in partnership with various community partners, is currently facilitating work to improve cardiac arrest survival rates across Horsham district by increasing awareness of heart disease and fund raising to establish more defibrillators across the district. During the week about 1,100 chil-

dren attended from 34 different primary schools across Horsham district in the hall at Denne Road, Horsham. The event featured a broad range of short interactive sessions to teach children aged nine to ten key life skills and the importance of being good citizens in the community. Some of the skills taught at the event included what actions to take in an emergency, how to minimise risk of injury, how to limit the transfer of illness or infection, tips on healthy eating, sustainable transport and an introduction to the legal system. Chil-

dren were taught by community organisations including Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Safer Roads, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Neighbourhood Watch and the council. They presented about 15 different scenarios in the form of interactive exercises, film presentations, sports activities and even how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cllr Youtan said: “I was delighted to attend this amazing event and to experience first- hand just how engaged the children were in all the great interactive activities which will stand them in good stead for the future. “My thanks go out to the many community organisations who have given up their time to make this event such a success. “I was particularly pleased to present the new defibrillator and hear how the children were being taught about resuscitation skills. Throughout the day they were all learning such key life skills.”

Two pupils from Horsham’s Holbrook Primary school received the surprise of a free family train trip. Southern’s Community Investment and CSR Manager, Andy Harrowell, and Sussex Community Rail Partnership’s Education Officer, Angie Lowen, dropped in to present them with a voucher for a family train trip. The voucher recognised the outstanding leaflets Claudia and Emilia had produced, which promoted rail travel. The school requested that the surnames of the youngsters should not be published. Last term the school had a GoLearn presentation from Angie, which focused on safe and independent rail travel. The session came at an ideal time for the class as they were starting to look at the

history of Horsham, including the importance of the railway to the development of the area. To follow on from the session, Angie challenged the group to design leaflets to cover all the points she had spoken to them about. Andy, who judged the leaflets with Angie, said: “The children produced some wonderfully colorful and imaginative leaflets. They had clearly paid attention to everything Angie discussed with them and had thought about the key points when producing their work. It was a very difficult to pick between all of them. “The work by Claudia and Emilia stood out especially as they covered all the points, made rail travel sound really attractive and featured some wonderful drawings. I hope they both enjoy a day out

with their families – they really do deserve it. I’d also like to thank Digital Lead, Elliott in the class for taking a wonderful picture of the presentation.” The Go-Learn materials are jointly delivered to schools and young people by Southern and SCRP through safety events, visiting schools, as well as station visits. Emilia and Claudia are pictured with their leaflets and vouchers, flanked by Southern’s Andy Harrowell and Sussex CRP’s Angie Lowen.

BBH group asks residents for demands

Broadbridge Heath is growing and The Parish Council, Village Centre Management Committee and Action in Rural Sussex are joining forces to extend the Village Centre building to meet the growing demands. The group is sending out a questionnaire to all residents of Broadbridge Heath this week as part of its strategy to find out exactly what these demands are. Colin Edwards (Chairman, Village Centre Management Committee) explained how the group is gathering information on future needs. “We have held a workshop inviting all our present and some possible future users to find out what facilities and amenities the future building should offer them. We are now sending out questionnaires to all residents of the village so that everyone has a chance to make suggestions.” Jonathan England (Vice Chairman, Broadbridge Heath

Parish Council) described how The Village Centre building will be upgraded. “Countryside Properties will pay £450,000 to Horsham District Council (HDC) for “improvements to community facilities” as part of the agreement around the largest recent development. Action in Rural Sussex will help us look for further funding if more money is required to deliver the growing demands and to form a business plan to make sure that our enhanced building will generate enough income to be sustainable. Once HDC has agreed with our plans it will release the funds to us so we can employ architects and builders to upgrade the building.” We value the opinion of our residents so urge them to complete and return the questionnaire – either on paper or online at www.broadbridgeheath. uk – before April 18th.

New book adds up to unusual history Pupils with Clifford Jones

Photo by Toby Phillips A former pupil has delved into 400-year-old records to write a book on an unusual school in Horsham backed by great historical figures like Samuel Pepys. In 1673 Charles II founded The Royal Mathematical School at Christ’s Hospital and pupils were taught mathematics and navigation, in preparation for entry into the Royal Navy. These pupils were distinguishable by a specially designed silver badge which they proudly wore on their bluecoat. Today pupils can still enter the school through the Royal Mathematical Foundation and three current pupils have the privilege of wearing the Royal Mathematical badge. A former Christ’s Hospital pupil, Clifford Jones, has researched the captivating history of the Royal Mathematical School and produced a book using records dating back 400 years and material never published before. His book, ‘The Sea and the Sky’, reveals detailed descriptions of the significant contributions made

My dad worked on submarines and I am immensely proud of my family link with the Royal Navy and exploration. Archie Dawe, Year 13 pupil at Christ’s Hospital, who wears one of the Royal Mathematical School badges along with two other pupils, recently met Clifford in the museum at Christ’s Hospital. Clifford showed the pupils a silver pocket watch and an Elementary of Navigation workbook, which histori-

cally was given to each Royal Mathematical pupil before they set sail. Archie said: “My dad worked on submarines and I am immensely proud of my family link with the Royal Navy. I am equally proud that this connection is still recognised by Christ’s Hospital. I am studying A level Maths in the Royal Mathematical School at Christ’s Hospital and it has been so interesting to discover more about its unique history from Clifford and his fascinating and well documented book.” Clifford Jones has also written three of the seven booklets in the Christ’s Hospital Heritage Series, which are full of detail about the School since its Foundation in 1552. ‘The Sea and the Sky’ can be purchased by sending a cheque made payable to Christ’s Hospital, postal address: The Counting House (Museum), Christ’s Hospital, Horsham, West Sussex RH13 0YP. Airport staff pledge to help hospice School head’s sweet dream of lollipop career Louise chats to pupils

Airport staff will be raising money for a hospice. Gatwick Airport workers chose St Catherines Hospice as the charity that will benefit from Gatwick’s charitable support for the next two years. Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive of St Catherine’s Hospice said, “On behalf of St Catherine’s, I’d like to thank everyone at Gatwick who voted for the hospice as its local charity partner. Each year we care for more than 2,000 people from

across East Surrey and Mid Sussex as they face a terminal illness and this partnership will make a real difference to our patients and those close to them. Without the support of businesses like Gatwick, St Catherine’s wouldn’t be able to provide the high quality end of life care we are renowned for. We’re really thrilled to be working with Gatwick Airport and look forward to a successful partnership over the next two years.”

This is the second time that St Catherine’s has had the privilege of being Gatwick’s Charity of the Year. Between 2011 and 2013, staff and passengers raised over £66,000 to support the work of the hospice and Gatwick staff have also taken part in St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival and volunteering days at local hospice shops. To find out more about how you can offer individual or corporate support to St Catherine’s please visit: www.stch.org

A head teacher revealed that she might have been showing pupils across the road rather than how to make the most of their lives if she had pursued a childhood ambition. During a question and answer session headmistress of Farlington School, Horsham, Louise Higson was asked what she wanted to be as

a youngster when she grew up. She responded: “When I was five, I wanted to be a lollipop lady. The lollipop lady at my school always had sweets in her pocket. By the time I was 15, I wanted to join the army. At 25 if I hadn’t gone into teaching I would have liked to have pursued a career in ophthalmology. I think ultimately though teaching was my true vocation.” Asked what her favourite subject was Louise answered with Spocklike logic : “Mathematics .I had an inspirational teacher and I loved the fact that ultimately your answer is either right or wrong. It is logical and precise.” Perhaps unsurprisingly her favourite teacher was a maths wizard. Louise said: “Mr Riley taught me Maths and Further Maths at A Level. He was quite eccentric. I remember him taking us out in his car to demonstrate the forces present during circular motion. We must have driven round a roundabout 20 times.” Fitness and food are among her interests, including walking, skiing and gym. She said: “I love cooking and have taken a course at the Prue Leith Cookery School, learnt knife skills and been taught how to gut and fillet fish. “I love to travel. After working in Italy I spent three months backpacking around Australia. Now I prefer not to rough it and have enjoyed a fantastic trips to Italy and the United States recently.”

And the biggest challenge facing schools? Louise said: “One of the challenges is the change to the examination systems , especially introducing new GCSE and A Levels at the same time. Perhaps a more logical approach of one following from the other might have been better. Not all the new specifications are available yet , difficult to plan. The mixture of numbers and grades at GCSE will probably cause confusion until all subjects move to the numbers “

Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Plan CALL FOR DEVELOPMENT SITES

Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Forum is preparing a Neighbourhood Development Plan, under the provisions of the Localism Act 2012. As part of its work in assessing future development opportunities, the Forum is calling on landowners, developers, residents, businesses, local interest groups and agents with an interest in Horsham Town Centre to propose sites or areas within the neighbourhood plan area of Horsham Forest, Denne and Trafalgar Neighbourhood Councils for development. This process will not decide whether or not a site is allocated for development by the neighbourhood plan as not all sites will be necessary or acceptable. However it will enable the orum to ensure that all potential development opportunities are considered. The site suggestions received will be used to guide and inform the preparation of site allocations in the Neighbourhood Plan. If you would like sites to be considered we would like to hear from you. The sites need not be in your ownership. Please send the following details to Horsham Blueprint by 30th April 2016. Imagine Horsham in 2030 A reminder that Imagine Horsham will be taking place in Swan Walk on 8th – 10th April, in one of the units near to the Swan Mosaic. We will be presenting a selection of comments and ideas that we have received from everyone across the community. These will form the foundation for our Plan, so we need to know which ideas and comments are supported. In addition, ScreenSocial will be running on-line polls about some of the key ideas and these will be displayed on screens around the town centre. We will be joined by Hack Horsham who will be providing Minecraft. There will be 20-30

minute slots available throughout the three days. We are very keen to have ideas from children - apart from anything else they can be very perceptive about the world and how they would like to fix it! For smaller children – and those who prefer paper to screen - there will be a place to draw. We are delighted to confirm that we have been awarded technical support from AECOM for site assessment. This work will be commencing in mid-April. We are issuing a Call for Sites and anyone wishing to have a site considered is requested to contact us by the end of April.

We are currently preparing surveys for residents and businesses with more detailed questions and these will be available online later in the month.

Funny, heart-breaking and human, The Best Thing is the latest touring production from Vamos Theatre, the UK’s leading full mask theatre company. Set in the 1960s, the show tells the story of seventeen year old Susan, growing up during the changing times of the decade. A bitter sweet story of mistaken morals and broken hearts, 45s and beehives, the production looks at what the sexual revolution really meant for young people living through it. Humorous and poignant, The show features 1960s music and design, and is a chance to see the highest quality full mask theatre. Award-winning Vamos Theatre has been praised by the BBC and The Stage as one of the UK’s major exponents of full mask, an innovative and unique style of theatre; it has no speech,

and the story is told visually, supported by design, music, and lighting. In Vamos’s hands it’s one of the most engaging, human, and personal theatre experiences around. The company, based in Worcester, tours nationally and internationally every year, and aims to showcase and popularise this fascinating theatre genre. Unusually, for a theatre production, its visual style also makes it completely accessible to deaf and partially deaf audiences, without the need for signer or captions. The production is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and by Worcestershire County Council Suitability: Age 12+. Performance: April 13. For booking information, please contact The Capitol Box Office.

Daniel Taylor is breathtaking.” Dave Jennings, British Theatre Guide “You would be a fool to miss this gem of a show! My face ached for hours afterwards.

Daniel Taylor is a massive talent and his portrayal of the big TC is outstanding.” Josie Gilbert, Liverpool-Public Review

PETs POST

Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Kittens are a long term commitment Kai and Turnip

abbi moon RSPCA

Bringing a kitten home is exciting, but it’s a long-term commitment. Some cats will live into their twenties, although most live around 14 years. Cats need lots of time and attention so the decision to get a new feline family member should never be taken lightly. Consider adopting a kitten before buying when you see them for sale or for free. If you adopt a kitten from a reputable rehoming charity you can be sure that they’re ready

to go to a new home and are happy and healthy. Rescue cats should come wormed, vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. If you want a purebred choose a breeder carefully and be sure their cats are well looked after. Make sure you see the kitten where they were bred before committing yourself. Take time to find out about the health problems associated with different breeds before deciding. There is no such thing as a nonallergenic breed of cat, so if you are allergic to cats, getting a particular breed won’t necessarily help. Wherever your kitten comes from, they should be sociable and bright-eyed with no visible health

problems. A kitten shouldn’t be taken away from their mother until they are eight or nine weeks old. Prepare your home by providing lots of space for your kitten to play as well as a resting place and hiding places. Purchase toys, a scratching post, cat litter trays and places to climb. Place litter trays somewhere quiet and accessible. It’s a good idea to take a blanket from the kitten’s first home for familiarity and comfort. Good rescue centres will allow you to take your own towel or blanket when you first visit which can help the kitten get used to the smell of your house and is something you can bring home with them for familiarity.

Eight to twelve weeks old is an important time for your kitten, what they learn and experience now will shape future behaviour. Socialise your kitten positively to experiences by gradually introducing them to their cat carrier, grooming, picking-up, handling and having their ears, eyes and other body parts checked. Reward good behaviour whilst ignoring bad behaviour - there’s no point shouting at your kitten as they won’t understand and may become scared of you instead. Kittens around eight weeks need about four small meals a day which is why many rescue centres will look for a home where someone is

around to feed the kitten and play

with them during this important developmental time. Feed them the same kitten food as they had previously and keep the same routine with small, regular meals to avoid tummy upsets. By around six months, two meals a day are usually fine, so if you work consider an older kitten. Continue to spend lots of time playing with your kitten every day, mental stimulation is important so play games like hiding their food. Remember, growing and learning is tiring so let your kitten rest regularly.

Well done Sheltie Savannah RSPCA offers Staffie owners help to Sleek Sheltie Savannah is the pride of her owner after taking a top prize. The fleet-footed and agile fouryear-old ran in the Medium Team Final at Crufts with Chantal Karyta and won. The Winning pair

meet new microchipping regulations From April 6, it will be a legal requirement to have all dogs microchipped under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015. Any dog, over the age of eight weeks, will be legally required to be microchipped and must also be registered to an approved database. As part of the new law, it will also be a requirement for keepers, and breeders of dogs, to keep their registered details up-to-date. RSPCA Sussex North branch, which covers the Crawley, Horsham and Haywards Heath area, is offering low-cost chipping and neutering for Staffordshire Bull Terriers and their crosses. How to spot a Urinary Obstruction in your Dog The first sign of a urinary obstruction is straining to urinate. This may look like constipation because the dog will hunch over while it is urinating. Because of the abnormal passage of urine, the stream or flow of urine will be interrupted and may appear cloudy and if any urine is seen, it may appear dark or blood tinged. The pain involved causes many dogs to cry out and they will stop eating and become depressed. Vomiting may also occur. If the dog does not receive urgent medi-

cal treatment, renal failure may develop, which can be life threatening and can occur within three days of symptoms. There are several known risk factors for a urinary tract obstruction including urinary tract stones, urinary disease (particularly common in female dogs), and prostate disease (in male dogs). The accumulation of minerals in the urinary tract can also cause the formation of an obstruction (crystals or stones). In addition, tumours and scar tissue can also lead to an obstruction. The

Dalmatian is a breed particularly susceptible to urinary crystals or stones. Acute kidney failure results from the increased pressure in the renal system and the inability to eliminate urea and other waste products usually eliminated in urine. This results in increased waste products and potassium in the bloodstream. Initial baseline blood levels are important to determine the appropriate fluids and other treatment that may become necessary. As the treatment progresses,

additional blood samples can be taken to determine changes in the dog’s condition. Additional blood analysis and imaging, including X-rays or ultrasound may be helpful to determine the cause of the obstruction or other contributing diseases or illnesses. The obstruction must be relieved as soon as possible. Sedation and sometimes anaesthesia is necessary. Depending on the severity of the obstruction, several methods may be used by the vet to remove the obstruction -- urethral massage and using fluid to push the obstruction out of the urethra and into the bladder are two examples. Once the obstruction is removed or pushed back into the bladder, a urinary catheter is sometimes left in place and is maintained for at least 24 hours, depending on the cause of the obstruction. Surgery is often necessary to remove the stones from the bladder.

Intravenous fluids are usually administered to rehydrate the dog and normalise the electrolyte levels. Because of the pressure build up and the inability to eliminate urine and its components, the entire renal system is affected and kidney damage can occur. In most cases, this damage is repaired with adequate fluid and electrolyte administration. Medications to treat the pain may also be necessary. It is important to monitor the flow of urine to ensure that there are no visible signs of complication. Some causes of urethral obstruction can be treated and eliminated, others cannot. Therefore, carefully monitoring the pet is very important. Dietary changes may be necessary to prevent crystals, stones or other potential causes of the obstruction. Ensuring your dog is able to urinate frequently can also help.

Adders make an appearance as the weather warms up An adder was seen by Arun Veterinary Group Director Matt Gittings on the RSPB reserve at the end of February. This is a particularly early time of the year to spot an adder - but as the weather warms up, they will be emerging from hibernation. Adders are the only venomous snake in the UK, and they are most active during the summer. What happens if I think my dog has been bitten by an Adder? Most importantly, DO NOT PANIC! Your dog is highly likely to make a full recovery if treated promptly and correctly. It is important, where possible, to reduce

the movement of your dog following a bite; ideally try carrying your dog or walking quietly back to your vehicle, as excessive movement and circulation can serve to spread the toxins. Adder bites result in local swelling that is often dark coloured and can become severe. You may see two small puncture wounds in the centre of the swelling. Bites most commonly occur on a dog’s legs or face. Your dog will show signs of pain and may appear nervous. Other signs include pale gums, bruising, salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, restlessness, drowsiness and lethargy.

Eventually animals may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions. Bites on or around the face can lead to swelling of the muzzle and result in breathing difficulties which in itself can be fatal. Swift treatment will often lead a full recovery. At Arun Veterinary Group we stock anti-venom which can be used to bind the enzymes within the venom thereby rendering them inactive and reducing the severity of the damage. Pain relief and intravenous fluid therapy are also

important parts of the treatment protocol. What do I do if my dog has been bitten? Ring us immediately to let us know what has happened and your estimated time of arrival at the surgery. Telephoning ahead is especially important during out of hours as it enables us to be sure that we have a veterinary surgeon and nurse on site to attend to your dog and prepare treatment before you arrive. What happens if I am bitten?

No one has died from an adder bite in Britain for over 20 years. With prompt and effective treatment, the worst effects are nausea and drowsiness, followed by severe swelling and bruising in the area of the bite. Most people who are bitten were handling the snake at the time. Treat adders with respect and leave them alone - they are naturally very shy creatures and will seek to move away from people and animals, only biting if they feel threatened.

Thakeham village to gain new sports facilities within new housing development

Chris Coates MD Oakford Homes A community hub featuring new sports pitches, a village hall, pre-school and local shop will be developed by joint venture partners, Abingworth Homes and Oakford Homes, alongside their latest collection of homes in the village of Thakeham. Construction of the 38 four and five-bedroomed family homes is already underway at ‘Abingworth Meadows’ just off Dukes Hill.

“The scheme will be our third in West Sussex and has an attractive selection of house styles which have been designed specifically for this rural setting,” said Chris Coates, managing director of Oakford Homes. “With the range of new amenities, ‘Abingworth Meadows’ will also help to create a new village focal point with something for all ages in the community and an

emphasis on outdoor sport which is particularly relevant in this Olympic year.” Within the scheme, ‘Abingworth Meadows’ will incorporate a new village hall, a pre-school facility, two football pitches, a cricket with sports pavilion, and a new local shop. In addition to the 38 detached family houses, there will be 20 two and three bedroom homes

for shared equity, to be offered to buyers with local connections, initially to those who work at the recently-upgraded local mushroom factory which employs some 450 people. Overall ‘Abingworth Meadows’ first completions are anticipated later this year. All enquiries for the new homes should be directed to Oakford Homes at www.oakfordhomes.co.uk.

New Landlords stamp duty to put the brakes on the rental market Over half of UK letting agents believe the new buy-to-let stamp duty reforms will push up rent costs In February, demand for rental properties grew to an average 37 per letting agent branch – the highest since February 2015, as supply increased marginally ARLA issues February Private Rental Sector (PRS) report The new stamp duty reforms for buy-to-let (BTL) properties, coming into effect on 1st April will increase rent costs for tenants and trigger a decline in the supply of available properties, reveals the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) February Private Rental Sector (PRS) report1. Over half (52 per cent) of letting agents reported an uplift in interest from buyers looking to invest in BTL properties before the stamp duty reforms come into effect – an increase from 47 per cent in January. However, after the deadline, two thirds (63 per cent) predict that supply will fall as landlords are pushed out of the market. Almost six in ten (57 per cent) ARLA members agree rents will be pushed up once the stamp duty reforms have come in to effect, as increased costs for landlords are passed through to tenants. This is especially high in London, where three quarters of letting agents (73 per cent) expect to see this happening.

Demand rose by almost a fifth (19%) in February, with an average 37 prospective tenants registered per member branch. This is the highest level seen since February last year, when an average 40 tenants were registered per branch. Alongside growing demand, the supply of rental properties on letting agents’ books increased to 176 in February, a rise from 172 in January.

Target achieved as Horsham are promoted again Photo by Nick Evans

Horsham’s men’s 1st XI achieved promotion Saturday April 2 – South League Premier Div 2 Purley Walcountians 0 - 4 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham clinched promotion in style with 46 points and a strong win against, previously troublesome opponents, Purley Walcountians at Banstead to go up into the South Premier Division 1 - English hockey’s third level - one step from the National League. Team

Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “Our excellent travelling supporters were treated to a consummate display of competitive hockey. Horsham made their intentions abundantly clear with a brilliant goal in the opening minute, Freddie Campbell bewildering the Purley defence with an airborne supply collected by Jack Dean who bested three tackles and then saw his shot deflected home by John Burroughs. This perfect start was followed by a trademark Matt Hough short corner conversion, giving us a 2

Horsham’s Jack Dean is the division’s highest goal scorer nil cushion at the break.” Andy McIllwraith’s pinpoint second half pass enabled Dean to beat the keeper, confirming his credentials as the league’s leading scorer before Burroughs scored again to seal the emphatic win. Ebullient Captain Duncan Howarth said: “Our promotion is an incredible achievement – we’ve pushed the boundaries, taking the club to its highest level of competition – twice in the last four years. We’ve got a brilliant squad and gone from strength to strength.” Player Coach Dom Male told us: “A

Barclay’s Martin Bonner receiving the S4S Challenge Cup from discus star Jade Lally Youth Sport Dave Smith- Sports Editor During the last 12 months Horsham’s Set4Success Charity, which helps our young sports stars achieve their dream, organised a series of sports challenges amongst local businesses and other organisations. Among those taking part were Spofforths, ATOM, Sony DASD, Barclays Bank, Wakefield Jewellers, Colliers, Horsham District Council, PfP Leisure, Christ’s Hospital Bluecoats, Durrant Removals and Horsham Rotary Club. The sports involved were Snooker, Bowls, Stoolball, Soccer, Table Tennis, and ending with a sports quiz. The series raised over £1200 which will be used to fund some more awards to our sporty youngsters. The overall Competition was won by Barclays Bank Horsham. Barclays also won the Snooker and Quiz, with Horsham Rotary winning the Bowls, Spofforths winning the Table Tennis, Colly-

ers winning Soccer and Bluecoats winning the Stoolball. Most of the teams that participated in the challenges attended the quiz evening and were thrilled to meet Jade Lally and hear about her hopes for Rio in the summer. She is currently the World’s number 5 ranked discus thrower based on 2016 events and has already thrown the qualifying distance. Previous Set4Success award winner Hannah Patchett was also present and talked about her achievements as part of the Great Britain water polo squad. The 2016 Challenges will start shortly and archery, shooting and canoeing will be added to the sports included in a fun competition suitable for all comers. Organisations do not have to participate in every sport - just the ones that they want to. Set4Success secretary, John Le Rossignol, invites any group or business that would like to participate to contact him at horshamrotary@btconnect.com to receive full details. The latest Set4Success award

winners are: Cecily Turner (Water Polo), Alexandra Baker (Basketball), Emily Orman (Football), Alexandra Malzer (Hockey), Reece Besley (Artistic Gymnastics), Zoe Gaudiano (Acrobatic Gymnastics), Verity Bashford (Trampolining), Jamie Brown (Kickboxing) and swimmers Michael Pallister, Rebecca Barber, Daniel Jones, Lily Davis and Freya Fulcher. long season! But I wasn’t worried when we had a few disappointing results because we’ve got goals in many people and it was great to be promoted convincingly with a game in hand!” After running endlessly in every game former captain John Burroughs added: “Six years ago the senior players hatched a development plan: we knew we had the potential. Our men’s section is very strong with eight Saturday sides and we’ve got a motivational youth policy, its fantastic to see great home grown talent coming through and blending so well with the sen-

ior players.” Chairman Nick Evans added: “Richly deserved, the result of a lot of hard work and discipline, both on Saturdays and at training. I’m absolutely delighted for everyone making it happen. We’ve got another new challenge, but I am confident that we’ll compete well.” Al Campbell summed up saying: “We’re already thinking about next season! We could lose one or two to university but we’ll be bringing on our academy players and recruiting fresh blood to make sure we give a good account of ourselves.”

Horsham return to winning ways Horsham produced a good performance against Beckenham

Saturday April 2 - London 2 South East Horsham 37 – 13 Beckenham Rugby Dave Smith- Sports Editor Horsham returned to winning ways and climbed to fifth in the league with an impressive victory over a powerful Beckenham side. Horsham went in front with an early Tom Johnson penalty following a good breakthrough from Johnny Ordidge. On 9 minutes Bell made his customary injection of pace into the line, Nwachukwu rounded his man and finished off the movement with a try in the corner. Tom Johnson couldn’t add the conversion and Horsham led

8-0. Horsham then scored a well worked try which was finished by an off load from Paul Talbot to send Arun Thompson over the line for his thirteenth try of the season which was converted by Tom Johnson. Beckenham then came back into the game when prop Graham Murray scored from a rolling maul followed by a superb Sean Griffiths try. Both conversion attempts were missed but Beckenham were back in the game at 15-10. Horsham then replied when Andy Gray burst onto a Tom Johnson offload to send Jonny Whiting in for a try under the posts. Tom Johnson added the conversion and a further penalty and Horsham went in 25-10 up at half time.

At the start of the second half James Curr added a penalty for Beckenham when Horsham were penalised for not releasing. Horsham however extended the lead further when after a Beckenham clearance was charged down Johnson was first to react, falling on the ball to score, and then convert his own try. As the minutes ticked by, Tom Johnson showed the vision to make a wide pass to send Joe Wilde clear to race in and score from 20 yards to end the scoring and record a good victory for the Green & Whites. Horsham’s attack coach Richard Bell was delighted with the performance of his team. “I am really pleased. We worked hard, kept our shape and played with pace and intensity. Our execution was good scoring five tries with some direct rugby which were all off just one or two phases. We looked a threat all day having gone through months of mud and the dry and firm conditions suit us. We like a fast flowing game but have to adapt to all conditions and need to learn this next year.” Horsham’s next match is away to Dulwich based Old Alleynians on April 16. Horsham Team: Bell; Watts, Ordidge (Price), J Johnson, Nwachukwu (Wilde), T Johnson, Mills; Talbot, Grantham-Hill, Fairs (Barber); Harcus, Whiting; Smith, Thompson, Gray.

Horsham edge nearer as their rivals lose again

Football Dave Smith- Sports Editor Of their five remaining league matches this match against third placed Newhaven looked on paper the most difficult for Horsham; and it turned out to be the tight tense hard fought affair expected. The all important three points however went the Hornets way courtesy of a first half strike from captain Joe Shelley, who had previ-

Joggers out in force at Christ’s Hospital Horsham Joggers at the Reading Half Marathon

Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers This weekend a huge contingent of 37 Horsham Joggers competed in a 300 strong field at the local Mel’s Milers 10k at Christ’s Hospital. The course is a scenic multi terrain taking the downs link to Southwater Park and back, conditions were soft under foot but the sun shone. There were some very impressive performances capped

ously missed a penalty. As Horsham continue to hold their nerve and to get results Hornets title rivals Eastbourne Town continued their poor run - losing again, this time 3-1 to Pagham – leaving Horsham now 3 points clear with a game in hand. An all action opening to the game saw Shelley and Kieron Pamment go close before a great opportunity to settle the nerves with the opening goal was wasted from the penalty spot by Shelley. An interchange between Terry Dodd and Darren Boswell led to the latter being brought down by visiting defender Daniel Murray but

the resulting poorly taken Shelley penalty was saved by ‘keeper Jake Buss, who then recovered to stop Pamment putting in the rebound. Shelley’s character has been a big part of Horsham’s success this season and typically he did not allow the penalty miss to get to him. Instead, just 5 minutes after his miss, he took matters into his own hands and powered through the visitor’s defence before unleashing a low drive beyond the reach of Buss and into the net. Newhaven crafted a chance to equalise just after the half hour but Scott Darnell’s long range effort went narrowly wide and then James

by Pete O’Connell finishing 7th overall in 37.00. In further London and Brighton marathon build ups 12 Joggers completed the Reading Half Marathon led home by Neil Boniface 1.09.24 (15th) with some solid performances and personal bests too. There were also Joggers at the Richmond and Paddock Wood half marathons as well as Chris Yeomans and Simon Perry running the Paris marathon.

Painter’s makeshift Heath team beaten at Worthing Saturday April 2 - SCFL Premier Div. Worthing United 3 - 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith- Sports Editor Faced with a long list of injured and unavailable players Heath Manager Steve Painter was forced to put out an attack minded side due to his shortage of defenders and the weak Heath defence was exploited by the hosts early on. With just 6 minutes played Ben Hall easily got to the goal line and cut the ball back into the path of Craig Nagle who smashed it past Michael Chester from close range. Just over the half hour mark and another defensive error allowed Alfred Gritt a free run one on one against Chester from where he smashed the ball past the stranded Heath ‘keeper. Despite Tiago Andrade going close and Piers McDermott slamming a 30 yard shot against the bar it remained 2-0 at the break. Eight minutes after the restart

Shaw had to push over a dangerous corner before the half finished with another Horsham penalty appeal but the referee waved away the Horsham shouts.

The second period – in terms of entertaining football – was a bit of a non event. Horsham failed to create little up front but their tight defence never really looked like conceding. The energetic Boswell ran himself ragged and at times engineered enough space to worry Buss in the Newhaven goal but the second nerve settling goal never came. The Hornets supporters

Heath were back in the game when a long throw in from McDermott fell to Stuart Chester who hammered the ball through a crowded penalty area for 2-1. Heath now went for the equaliser – coming close through Jake Holmes and even closer when Andrade hit the post – but the elusive goal wouldn’t come. Heath were now well in control and it was therefore a surprise when on a rare attack, Worthing scored again. A Worthing corner was cleared but only out to Gritt who for the second time in the match gave Chester no chance with a thunderous effort that flew into the net. Heath’s afternoon was summed up when the Worthing woodwork was rattled a further two times – Weller and Andrade the unfortunate players – but it was not going to be and Painter’s makeshift side came away from the coast pointless. Heath Team: M.Chester, S.Chester, Robinson (M.Clark 80), Waddingham, D.Robinson, Holmes, Mutungi (Burchell 85), McDermott, Andrade, Weller, Findlay (Legrange 6).

were then given a heart stopping moment in the dying minutes when substitute Ryan Knight had his header cleared off the line by Ashley Jones. The final whistle was greeted with joyous cheers from the Horsham faithful, not only for the victory but for stuttering Eastbourne Town’s defeat at Pagham that has boosted Horsham’s title chances even further. Horsham Team: Shaw, Duncan, Knee, Keehan, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Clark, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell.

Horsham foiled again by excellent goal keeping

Photos by John Lines Tuesday April 5 - Peter Bentley Cup Semi-Final Horsham 1 – 2 Newhaven Football Dave Smith- Sports Editor Having played and narrowly won a league match against the determined and tough to beat Newhaven a few days before, Horsham knew exactly what would be required of them to reach the cup final and the chance of a league and cup double. However despite leading through Terry Dodd’s early goal and

dominating for large parts of the game – especially in the second half – Horsham were beaten by two first half Newhaven goals. In a match played at the neutral Hanbury Stadium – home to Haywards Heath FC – Horsham made several changes from the team that played against the same opposition on Saturday including goalkeeper Steve Phillips who replaced the cup tied James Shaw. The game got off to a lively start with both teams going for it. Kieron Pamment had a shot parried in the opening minutes and then at the other end Phillips had to be alert

to save well at his near post. Dodd then headed over before Newhaven ‘keeper Jake Buss dropped Pamment’s harmless looking cross which led to a goalmouth scramble. Then with 11 minutes gone Dodd collected the ball in the area and after some good close control fired past Buss for a deserved early lead. The match continued with Horsham having the better of the play until in the 20th minute when stand in keeper Phillips made a mess of a clearance that went straight to Lee Robinson who took full advantage of the error to equalise. 14 minutes later and the

Wasteful YM punished as Shoreham grab late equaliser Matt crane heading YM’s only goal

Photo by Clive Turner Saturday April 2 - SCFL Premier Div. Shoreham 1 – 1 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter Horsham YMCA were made to rue a plethora of squandered chances on Saturday, as sixteenth-placed Shoreham netted an injury-time leveller to leave manager Peter Buckland bitterly disappointed. After defender Matt Crane head-

ed YM in front just after the quarter mark, the visitors’ dominance against a young and inexperienced Mussels outfit suggested that a convincing win and three points would be a formality. But the away side were wasteful in front of goal and as the number of misspent opportunities increased, Shoreham’s Ieuan Strong swept home a 92ndminute equaliser to share the spoils with their only shot on target. YM boss Buckland commented: “I make that probably one of the

worst performances and lowest moments in what is now my fourth season at the club. I think that is the worst I have ever endured. From the first minute to the last, I hated every second of it. There were too many legends out there that thought they could just stroll through the game. I know the conditions are difficult. But when you’ve got players of the experience that we’ve got and with four one-on-ones when it was 1-0, we should have been out of sight. I’ve been in football long enough to know that something was going to happen towards the end of the game and it did. I’m a little bit at a loss for words. Not for a long time have I seen such domination not turned into goals. But that is football. Just because you’ve got a good side out there against an inexperienced Shoreham team, you’ve got no God given right to win the game. I’ve hardly had to say anything to the players. They are all sat there with their heads hung low. I don’t know if embarrassed is the right word. Maybe it is, embarrassed at their own performance.” YM Team: Fox, Buchanan, Gathern, Crane, Evans, Donaldson, Johnson, Dugdale, Brown, Budge, Schaaf. Unused subs: Gedling, Zydonik.

Hornets were behind. A long cross went unchallenged to the back post from where it was headed back for Olly Davies to tap in with ease. Two poor pieces of defending had given Newhaven what would turn out to be a winning lead. Horsham pressed again for the remainder of the half without reward although Dodd was unfortunate to not have won a penalty. The second half was virtually all one-way traffic with Horsham recording numerous attempts on the Newhaven goal but all to no avail as some resolute defending and superb goalkeeping from the

excellent Buss saw out a goalless second period and a heart wrenching semi final defeat for Horsham. Newhaven will now fancy their chances in the final against either Little Common or Lancing while Horsham can concentrate on securing the 7 points needed from their remaining 4 matches to be crowned champions and to make a quick return to the Ryman League. Horsham Team: Phillips, Storrie (Chadwick) Knee, Keehan, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Arcchibald (Smith) Dodd, Pamment, Boswell (Lewis).

Ever improving Heath a credit to manager Painter Saturday April 2 - SCFL Premier Div. Broadbridge Heath 4 - 0 AFC Uckfield Football Anrew Crisp - Football Reporter Broadbridge Heath welcomed AFC Uckfield to the Leisure Centre on Tuesday night knowing that victory would put the team on 53 points, the most the club has ever achieved in the top division. It didn’t take Steve Painters side long to get into their rhythm with Scott Weller having a pop at goal from distance that went inches wide of the post, Tiago Andrade with a header that went just over the bar and Andrade again with a scissor kick that was cleared off the goal-line. Despite the pressure though it was the visitors who forced the first real save of the match when Dan Barnard got on the end of a right wing cross to power a header goal-wards forcing Michael Chester to save at full length. Deep into first half stoppage time a long Piers McDermott throw was launched towards the Uckfield penalty area where it was met by the head of Andy Waddingham at the near post and his glancing header beat everyone to

give Heath a narrow lead at the break. That lead was soon doubled early in the second period when a Weller free kick was only cleared as far as Jake Holmes who rifled it through a crowded penalty area for 2-0. The third goal soon followed midway through the half when Robinson’s effort from 20 yards was deflected wide to Stuart Chester who took a touch and then hammered a shot into the roof of the net. Heath continued to dominate play and with minutes remaining just as Andrade was about to score from 8 yards he was hauled to the ground and Jake Holmes coolly slotted the resulting penalty kick into the net. An impressive display from Painters side who, in the six years that the Heath manager has been in charge have improved their points tally each year moving from the SCFL Division 3 to mid-table in the Premier Division a tremendous achievement done mainly with local players and limited resources. Heath Team: M.Chester, J.Robinson, Wicking, D.Attwater (Legrange 80), S.Chester, Waddingham, McDermott, D.Robinson (M.Clark 70), Andrade, Holmes, Weller.
