Staff praised as raiders hit John Lewis store

Access point used byraiders

Staff at John Lewis At Home store in Horsham were praised for keeping it open after night raiders smashed their way in. Electronic equipment worth thousands of pounds was stolen and severe damage caused as the raiders broke a large window and climbed through the open gap. They cut security leads on laptops, tablets and other electronic equipment. The gang of three was spotted leaving only a few minutes after

breaking in but got away despite a helicopter search. The raid happened a few hours after the store shut on Monday evening and the store faced a race against time to get open in time for Tuesday morning. Manager Nigel Davis told the District Post early on Tuesday morning: “We are completely open to trade. There is no disruption whatsoever, thanks to our partners (staff) who came in to clean up. We have got quite a lot of partners living nearby, and they all came in to help. That’s one of the good things about John Lewis, the team spirit.” It appears that the raiders targeted specific kinds of goods in the

store, which also sells furniture, soft furnishings and other home items. Mr Davis said: “They took audio equipment, computers, tablets, electronic devices. I think they were easy to shift. “It is a horrible thing to be broken into. But the important thing is that no-one was hurt, as long as everyone is safe.” The store is next to the Waitrose supermarket, which employs night workers. Mr Davis said: “There were Waitrose staff in at the time, but they are two separate buildings.” Mr Davis said he could not comment on rumours that losses from

the raid might be about £10,000. He said: “We are not sure of the value of what was taken at this stage, it could easily be £10,000, we don’t know. There was considerable damage. They smashed one of the front windows to gain access. And there was damage to fixtures because we secure all our products. They are locked to cabinets.” John Lewis ‘At Home’ opened last summer and sells furniture, furnishing accessories, homeware, home and electrical technology, nursery and travel goods and well as providing other services. Despite the shock and disappointment of the raid Mr Davis, its first manager, said: “We opened on

June 18th last year and we have had a phenomenal year, really good.” Sussex Police said: “Police were called to the store in Albion Way at 10.53pm after a large pane of glass at the front of the building had been smashed to gain access. Once inside, the raiders broke into a glass cabinet to remove the electronic equipment and also raided a number of tills, making off with a small amount of cash. Less than five minutes after breaking in, three men were seen running from the building carrying what appeared to be duffel bags. A police helicopter was called in to assist the search for the men, but they were not located.”

Crooks warning over Blue Badges Students learn about life at Oxbridge Website crooks are ripping off disabled people by selling them useless blue parking badges. West Sussex County Council issues the badges and is warning residents not to apply for them through what it calls copycat websites. The council says the copycat websites appear to offer an easy way of applying for or renewing a Blue Badge but instead charge more than necessary and have no authority to issue the badges. Residents who use these sites will still have to submit their applications to West Sussex County Council and pay the genuine £10 fee to cover the application. Complaints have been received by West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards team from el-

derly and vulnerable residents who have unnecessarily paid excessive amounts for a blue badge. Richard Sargeant, Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “We advise anyone applying or renewing a Blue Badge to use the Council’s or the Government’s official website. “Using a copycat website may result in your data being sold on to third parties. To ensure that you and your data is safe, always use an official ‘.gov.uk’ website.” IAnyone with concerns about copycat websites may contact Trading Standards via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506 or use the online reporting form at www.westsussex. gov.uk/tsreport. For more information search ‘Blue Badge’ onwww.westsussex. gov.uk.

New move to protect youngsters

Taxi drivers and accommodation staff across Horsham district are being asked to help in the latest phase of an awareness campaign aimed at combating child sexual exploitation. Since January this year Sussex Police, with the support of the Local Children Safeguarding Boards has been delivering a West and East Sussex wide Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Campaign. The first two phases targeted the public, parents, carers and children as well as professionals whose job means they come into contact with children on a regular basis. Phase three was launched on Monday and focuses on raising the awareness of the exploitation amongst taxi drivers and those who manage and work in hotels and bed

and breakfast businesses in West and East Sussex, including Horsham district. The latest move comes at a time when an NSPCC survey revealed shocking figures about another threat to young people, the level of exposure to indecent images. Sussex Police say workers are in a unique position to help spot the signs of sexual exploitation. Taxis are often used to transport boy and girls between accommodation, with hotels and bed and breakfast establishments often used as locations to meet, groom and abuse children. Detective Superintendent Jason Tingley, Head of Public Protection for Sussex Police, said, “Taxi drivers and those who work in hotels and b and bs are able to spot preda-

tory behaviour and vulnerability. In order for them to be able to help, it is important that people in both occupations are offered guidance and training to know what the warning signs and how to report that information.” The campaign coincides with the recent release of NSPPC figures that 50% of children surveyed have seen pornographic and violent material on social media sites, apps and games. About 12,000 have been spoken to since 2011 about abuse and how to keep themselves safe. Amanda Rocca, (pictured) NSPCC schools service area coordinator in Sussex, said: “It’s shocking that 50 per cent of school children surveyed by the NSPCC have seen pornographic and violent material on social media sites, apps and games. The question is how many parents are aware of the fact? How many realise their children could be log-

ging on and seeing inappropriate pictures at sites such as Sickipedia? Worryingly, the research has shown that children were more likely than their parents to report seeing harmful content.”

Young players from Horsham Rugby Club honed their skills with professionals as they visited 10time English champions Leicester Tigers. They picked up a few tips at the “Matchday” Coaching Clinic at Welford Road before a big match. The team worked with Tigers coaches in a specialised training session to develop their individual and team skills, as well as taking tips and techniques with them to work on during the rest of the season. The players also got to quiz a Leicester Tigers first-team player about playing professional rugby for the biggest club in the country and their hopes for the season. They then soaked up the match day atmosphere at Welford Road and watched the professionals put those techniques into practice. They even managed to follow in the players’ footsteps by having a team photo taken on the famous turf at half-time in front of a 22,000-strong home crowd.

Steve Colt, coach at Horsham, who accompanied the team, said: “It was absolutely fantastic, the kids have loved it. “We worked on tackling at the coaching clinic and it was great because the coaches just asked us what we wanted to work on and

improve on. “We also had a brilliant question-and-answer session with Jack Roberts who was really responsive. He is a youngish lad so the kids could easily relate to him.” caption the youngsters at Welford Road

Youngsters get into action for charity Felix and Zoe grow wings 6th Horsham Beavers finish

Charity walk efforts have led to the 6th Horsham (Methodist) Scouts and Larrikin Explorers presenting a cheque for £1100 to the charity Action for Children. The money came from a fundraiser event organised by the group’s Scout Leader Paul Banyard. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers set out from their meeting place in Horsham heading for targets along the Downslink to Shoreham. Leaders and some parents supported, either walking with the younger members or manning

check-points. The two Explorer teams reached Shoreham within their allotted time. Paul said: “We wanted to hold an event that all sections could feel part of and be challenged by and that would contribute to their badge work”. It was decided to run a hike starting from their meeting place at the Wesley Hall and head towards Shoreham. Beavers were given the target of reaching Southwater, Cubs aimed for Partridge Green and Scouts and

Explorers headed as far as they could given the daylight available. The London Road Methodist Church held a coffee morning to send the hikers on their way, some of the cakes having been made by the Cubs and Scouts. The weather which was mainly dry though very cold. Even the youngest Beavers walked the 5 miles to Southwater Country Park. The Cubs pressed on to Partridge Green, some 9 miles in a fast time of three hours. The Scouts continued on to Bramber Castle and the Explorers completed the 25 miles reaching Shoreham just before dark. The total raised was split between the Scouts and the target charity Action for Children. For more information about 6th Horsham Scout Group or the Larrikin Explorer Unit go to http:// www.6thhorsham.org/ Ruth Dean, Community Partnership Fundraiser of Action for Children, said: “We are so grateful to the 6th Horsham Methodist Scouts, Beavers, Cubs and Explorers for taking on this walking challenge. It was great to be able to come and talk to them about the children and young people we work with and the difference their fundraising would make. They should all be very proud of their achievement and the fantastic amount they raised”. Photographs by David Casey.

Felix and Zoe

Cadets Felix Roughton and Zoe Vallinga have won their cadet “wings” after completing their first solo parachute jumps. The duo from Christ’s Hospital school at Horsham school jumped from 3,500 feet at the British Army’s parachute training centre at Netheravon. The static line jumps followed an intensive course organised by the School’s Combined Cadet Force at the army’s home of parachuting in the Wiltshire plains. Instruction covered all eventualities including steering, safe

landings and how to cut away their chutes and deploy their reserves in an emergency.

Major Mark Aggrey, Contingent Commander at Christ’s Hospital, said: “Opportunities like this are what the cadets is all about: young people taking on the unfamiliar and scary and finding out they can do it. Nothing quite compares to the adrenaline rush of your first solo jump! Zoe and Felix loved the experience. We are very grateful to Netheravon for their incredible training.”

Make tracks for donation station

Shoppers can help a charity cancer with a scheme launched in Horsham yesterday. They are being invited to drop unwanted goods into a special donation point in the town centre under a scheme backed by Swan Walk shopping centre.

Organisers hope the donations will help beat the £20,000 worth of goods given in 2015 to raise money for Cancer Research U.K Gill Buchanan, centre manager, said: “Swan Walk’s loyal customers have raised more than £120,000 for Cancer Research UK over recent

years. “After we raised more than £20,000 in 2015 we are hoping to add at least this much again this year. All customers need to do is to pick up a bag, fill it at home and pop it back when they are next in Horsham” “Our customers can collect a bag from the pick-up point on the mosaic, outside Superdrug, fill it up at home and pop it back to the drop off point when they are next shopping in Horsham. Cancer Research UK says it will be delighted to receive good quality clothes, shoes, accessories, books, homewares, DVD’s and CD’s. All donations will be used in the first instance to stock the two Cancer Research UK stores in Horsham’s East Street and West Street. Each bag can be worth up to £30.00 to the charity and donators can also sign up for Gift Aid. Victoria Godfrey, manager at the Cancer Research UK’s East Street store, who has worked with the centre every year to deliver this event, said: “We’ve had tremendous support from the people of Horsham and everyone at Swan Walk in the past and we are looking forward to the 2016 challenge.”

Hard study adds up to maths success The happy group

Photo by Chloe Powell Students have enjoyed an outstanding showing at the UK Maths Challenge. A competition aimed at 16-19 year olds studying Mathematics at AS and A Level, it tests the nation’s brightest young mathematicians. Maths teacher James Waller, who co-ordinated the entry for Collyer’s college, Horsham,, said: “I’m absolutely delighted with our results! The challenge is highly competitive and prestigious, but it is also a fun way of stretching and challenge our students.” Collyer’s students won gold, silver and bronze awards and many also qualified for the follow-on ‘Senior Kangaroo’ round, with Yunqiao Cao, Sanmay Kanumakala

and Hennes Vermeer achieving highly sought after ‘Merits’. Yunqiao Cao said: “The challenge has really helped us to develop a further interest in maths.” Hennes Vermeer added: “I enjoy the problem solving elements and the competition was a nice break from the regular maths we study in class.” Students were awarded with certificates during a presentation ceremony hosted by Collyer’s Vice Principal, Steve Nicholls. The presentation took place at Collyer’s Duckering Hall. Megan Longdon, who previously attended Millais school, Horsham, was thrilled: “I’m really glad that we’ve done so well representing the college

on the national stage. I’ve had a fantastic first year at Collyer’s and I can’t wait to get stuck in to revision workshops in preparation for the AS exams.”Lily Overton, who came to Collyer’s from Tanbridge House School , Horsham, said: “The challenge was obviously very tough and I particularly enjoyed the logical aspects. Our teachers worked hard with us to prepare so well, so big thanks to them.” Collyer’s Vice Principal Steve Nicholls said: “Congratulations to everyone involved. “These talented students and their teachers have put in an incredible amount of effort to be successful in the UK Maths.”

Sports Club Roadshow at Broadbridge Heath Sports fans get their own roadshow on Tuesday at Broadbridge Heath. Horsham District Council, working in partnership with Active Sussex, the county’s sports development hub, is coordinating a free ‘Sports Club Roadshow’ which will take place at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre on April 19 from 6pm -8.30pm. This roadshow is one of nine similar roadshows that will be running across the county throughout April and May and forms part of a countywide, Sport England funded ‘Club Matters’ programme of opportunities. The roadshow provides existing sports clubs with training and advice including top tips on how to engage new members, make coaches more skilled, manage volunteers and secure funding. Keynote speaker England cricketer Fred Bridges will also share his experience along with other experts sharing examples of good practice and providing potential solutions to the challenges that sports clubs typically face. There will also be

a case study from a successful local club. Refreshments will be provided. The event will hopefully be a catalyst for many clubs to make positive changes. However it will also be an opportunity for attenders to spend a couple of hours away from their club with a view to providing time to reflect on current operations, a luxury that volunteers do not allow themselves in a busy world. Commenting on the Horsham Sports Roadshow, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “Promoting sport and physical activities for local residents is a key priority for the council. Sports clubs and their many volunteers play a vital role in our communities and this workshop is a great opportunity for those who run clubs, often voluntarily, to get new ideas and inspiration to help them succeed and grow. I would urge as many people as possible to attend if they can.” For further information visit www.activesussex.org or contact Gina Rogers 01273 644185 / grogers@activesussex.org

The babies named after battles phil dennett

News Editor

My own curiosity about my late mother’s unusual middle name has led me to be fascinated by the story of the battle babies. These were children who, usually as a result of a bout of patriotic fervour , were named by their parents after battles that were anything but romantic. In my mother’s case she was christened, in the Derbyshire mining village of Bolsover, Elsie VERDUN Dennett after being born on April 14 1916, 100 years ago yesterday. Students of war will remember that the crucial battle of Verdun in France lasted ten gruelling months in 1916. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history for its length, sheer intensity and the highest amount of slaughter per square yard, often in appalling hand to hand conflict. Strangely, you might have expected Elsie’s parents to name her after a battle in which the English fought. In fact the French and Germans bled each other to death without much help as the Germans made a huge push for victory and the French resisted at an equally huge cost in life as both sides made tactical blunders.

But there was, sadly, plenty of choice for battles in which we did take part for babies to be named after during the murderous 14-18 war. During that period there were 1, 634 babies given battle names, including many girls blessed with what had been considered a masculine name of Verdun. For some reason still unknown Pontypridd in Wales had the most of the towns with 50. During that time 901 babies joined my mother in bearing the name Verdun. But there were dozens named , with the best of motives, after terrible slaughters like Ypres, Mons, Arras, Loos , Somme and even the disastrous Dardanelles campaign. Many were first names, but a lot were used as middle names, as in the case of my mother, who remained enigmatic her whole life about her unusual name. Some of the register entries, made many miles from the bloody conflict, seem extraordinary now. Neuve Chappell, Passchendael and Vimy Ridge among them. Some offspring got to be dubbed more happily hero babies, named after people of huge courage like nurse Edith CAVELL. Many boys got to be called Kitchener (finger pointing on Your Country Needs You posters) and a few were even named Haig. For many it was simply a gesture of solidarity, if not particularly flattering.

The idea of naming babies after conflicts probably began in the Boer War in South Africa, although it is worth mentioning that there was another battle of Verdun in 1792. From South Africa the names Colenso, Dundee and Pretoria found their way to British birth registers, their newly-born and innocent owners having no say whatsoever in the proceedings of course. The end of conflict at least brought some happier names with hundreds of babies being called names like Peace and Victory. One baby born on World War One Armistice Day, when the peace treaty was signed on 28 June 1919, was named Irene , not after a battle but because Irene is the Goddess of Love. Later, once the Royal British Legion used the flower as its symbol, Poppy became very popular. Perhaps the happiest story of the war babies was that of a man described in records simply as Uncle Arthur. Ian ready to tackle new challenge

ian coaching

The new director of rugby at Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham knows all about tackling a new challenge. Ian Davies twice broke his back and twice dislocated a knee in the space of under three years as a teenage player. The serious injuries ended both his hopes of a rugby playing career and a job in the police and he had to look for another career path in life. But his determination to succeed led him to study at Chichester University, staying on as Director of Sport then coaching at Worthing and Haywards Heath and teaching chemistry before joining Championship Cornish Pirates seven years ago. He took them to victory in the

British and Irish Cup and a championship play-off, and will start his new job as Director of Rugby from September 1 at the school where 6ft 6ins England star Joe Launchbury, 25, was educated and captained the school team as well as playing for Horsham and Barns Green. The school says that Ian will be responsible for developing rugby coaching and playing philosophy working with teams, coaches and individuals building on it described as the already high quality coaching within the School’s rugby programme. He is a Level 4 coach and RFU coach educator and has coached England Counties XV, the Barbarians and is currently the Assistant coach for the England Students.

Dave Messenger, Director of Sport at Christ’s Hospital said: “We aim to deliver a rugby programme that allows pupils to strive for excellence in an enjoyable and positive environment. The high quality of coaching is our hallmark and in recent years, this has been mainly down to current Director of Rugby, Andy Turner, RFU Level IV coach who is retiring in June. “I believe that Ian will contribute significantly to the future success of Rugby at Christ’s Hospital.”

Country and Western fans danced the night away to help an air ambulance. They flocked to Kingsfold for a music night in aid of Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. People from as far as Dover and Hayling Island attended the event

which included a live band and line dancing. Organiser David Richards, of the Go Western Group, presented a cheque for £583 to Peter Green, a volunteer for the Redhill-based charity helicopter.

Fishing fans aim for big charity catch Lions give villagers sight, hearing and health

Fishing fans will be angling to beat a £12,000 target for charity. That was the amount raised in 2015 at Furnace Lakes Fishery, Slinfold, just outside Horsham, for Cancer Research UK by the Catting For Cancer event. This year’s event is being held from June 6-9 and organisers hope that fishing fans will help them beat last year’s cash catch. The event gets its name from the catfish that swim in the lakes at the centre. The charges are £95 each and will

require a minimum of £50 sponsorship. A spokesman for the event said: “We are looking for more people to attend to event as the more people attend the more we raise for our chosen charity. “There will be a grand raffle with prizes including European fishing holidays, local fishing trips any many more prizes. For more information contact For further information please contact Andy Lane on Andylane@cattingforcancer.co.uk

Burglary in Steyning

Two of the stolen items

Thieves stole 27 valuable antiques in a £50,000 haul from a house. Police believe a vehicle must have been used to take away the items from the home in Cripps Lane Steyning and are appealing for information. The stolen items included a large number of silver items from the George III and IV periods, a Regency period bracket clock worth £5500, and a bronze bust of William IV, circa 1830, valued at £3000. The thieves struck between 6.20pm and 9.45pm on March 14, and details were released by police last Thursday. Police say because of the large amount of items taken it is likely that the suspects have used a vehicle. It is also believed that two blue plastic basins, which also disappeared from the house, were used to carry away at least some of the items. Ellie Mannan, Investigating Officer from the West Sussex Priority Crime Team said; “If anyone saw anything suspicious in Steyning that evening, or has any information about this burglary, please contact us by emailing 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101 quoting serial 1503 of 14/03. “You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Poor villagers received small but vital gifts when a woman from Southwater visited them thousands of miles away. In Sri Lanka Horsham Lions Club member Charmini Anthony delivered spectacles, hearing aids and sugar monitors given by the public. The spectacles meant that the villagers were instantly able to read in many cases, whereas before they could not afford spectacles. Charmini first visited a small village called Dhompay. Here the people were very poor and receiving spectacles and monitors will be a great help to them. Charmini said that after giving thanks for the gifts, the villagers went home very happy.

Some had had cataracts. Fortunately with the aid of used spectacle collections, which are co-ordinated by Chichester Lions Club, additional revenue is raised from the sale of gold content in certain spectacle frames. This money is used to promote Lions Sight activities and this has paid for doctors to visit and carry out cataract operations. Collecting boxes are available in Horsham opticians, hospital and some surgeries for depositing used spectacles. These are sorted, graded and sent to countries such as Sri Lanka for use after cataract operations. Next, Charmini visited Negombo Lions and donated sugar moni-

tors, hearing aids and spectacles to them, followed by a visit to Minuwangoda. Lions International President, Dr. Jjittsuhiro Yamada was visiting Sri Lanka at the same time and hearing of the involvement of Horsham Lions helping the poor in Sri Lanka, asked to meet Lion Charmini who was pleased to present him with a Horsham Lions Friendship banner at a reception. Horsham Lions are involved in a wide range of activities and new members are welcome. To Brexit - or not to Brexit? Until recently, the best guess at what Brexit was all about, according to one Billingshurst businessman this week, was a breakfast cereal. Not now. With just weeks before the June 23 referendum, the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce has remodelled a section of its AGM this month into an open ‘Brexit - in or out’ session, with a guest speaker from Sussex University setting out the two sides. Dr Peter Holmes is Reader in Economics at Sussex University’s Department of Economics, and will set the scene at the AGM on April 20 and present the arguments for ‘in’ and ‘out’. Dr Holmes is an expert on European economic integration and has written reports for the European Commission and the World Bank. In early March he led the first of a series of three seminars on Brexit, hosted by the University of Sussex and the Sussex European Institute. Martin Spurrier, Chairman of the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce, said: “Is it any wonder that confusion reigns over this issue, when it is described as ‘an act of economic and political self harm’ by one government leader, and as ‘Baloney’

Black Jug team take on The Welsh 3000’s Ally, Nic and Kelley from The Black Jug are joining Brunning and Price, to attempt a charity hike, ‘The Welsh 3000’s’, on May 17 and 18. The Welsh 3000’s is one of the toughest challenges in the UK, encompassing all 15 peaks in North Wales, over 3000ft, spanning near 30 miles and accumulating a total ascent of more than 14750ft (about the height of Mont Blanc) and to cap it all off, the team is planning to complete this challenge in less than 24hrs. “We are also raising money for our chosen charity, Parkinson’s UK,” says the team, “To aid our fund raising, we

will be holding a charity event on 4th May 2016, which will include a charity raffle. Where we are looking to local businesses, and our suppliers, to donate prizes for us to raffle off. We would be advertising any businesses that kindly donate raffle prizes, before the event and during. If you feel as though you could help us that would

be amazing”.

Anyone who wishes to help are invited to attend the event at The Black Jug on the evening of the draw, to join in the fun and perhaps have a photo or two with the winning customers. Organisers are certain it will be a great night. Last year, as a company, the B&P team successfully completed the 3 peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, and raised some £10,000 for both Prostate Cancer and St. Catherine’s hospice. It would be great to surpass last years total this year.

He’s back, and if you haven’t heard of him, Heres’ Johnny John O’sullivan announces his new show at The Capitol Theatre Horsham ‘Come On My Sofa’

davey pearson Review

Some of you may remember Mr John 0’Sullivan from his Candy Box days. Others may have seen him on an episode of Come Dine with Me or John Bishops show. Some of you may have even seen him milling around the Carfax with his flat cap and comedic glasses; but if you weren’t aware, Mr O’Sullivan is a Horsham Resident, with a talent for making people laugh. When I heard John was return-

I enjoyed drama college very much, but unfortunately for me, I became a bit of a trouble maker, so drama school wasn’t an option going forward. ing to the stage, breaking his 5 year sabbatical, I thought a coffee and a chat was needed... He was buying. We met at the Pret a Manger, which John calls something else, but this is a family paper, so we won’t go into that. Instead, we’ll use it to lead into Mr O’Sullivan’s repertoire, which is definitely more of an adult focused act. John describes himself as coming from a loving middle class family. Having moved to our wonderful town in his teens, he attended (sometimes) a drama college in Chichester. From an early age, John realised he enjoyed making people laugh and had a flare for the performing arts: “I enjoyed drama college very much, but

unfortunately for me, I became a bit of a trouble maker, so drama school wasn’t an option going forward.” Instead, John says he: “decided to work for a living and got a job in a nightclub in London.” It was here that he met a few ‘proper’ comedians, who would show him some of the skills needed to make it in the world of comedy.. Looking back, John adds: “they were very funny”. John appeared in a performance called ‘The Stephen Hawking experience’, which he took all the way to Edinburgh, Scotland. He recalls: “they didn’t like us much so we came back” I’ve known John a while and can confirm he has expensive taste: “My two main vices are B & H cigarettes and steak” he concludes. On establishing keeping his expensive lifestyle would need more than the income of a slightly amusing, un-loved by the Scottish, stand up comedian, John decided to get a proper job....at the House of Commons... Well, ‘Anne’s Bar’ at the House of Commons, but it sounded good. Here, he had a most important role to play: Get (and keep) MP’s drunk - a role, you can imagine, that wasn’t too taxing. John was very proficient at

his new found position and was well liked. On the matter, he states: “The MP’s couldn’t understand why I didn’t speak with a common accent, which is the way all the staff seemed to speak. It was like the cellars of Downton Abbey.” He found himself invited to sleepovers with some of the MP’s - sometimes on his own and sometimes with groups. His experiences have been committed to memory to be

used at a later date for a later performance - I’ll keep you posted. Whilst commuting to London, John noticed the small newsagents, at Horsham Station, gradually deteriorate over time. He recalls his sadness over it: “I liked that little shop; It sold me my B & H”. So upset with it’s demise, he bought it and promptly left the commons. Where he got the money from, I don’t know, but I could hazard a guess - wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more. It was here that John’s love of the public grew and he started to develop his comedic talent, using material from the characters he met on a daily basis. The shop became more and more popular, and business was good - so good, that in 2008, John bought the Candy Box newsagents in the Carfax, which led to John being more noticed locally. This, of course, has nothing to do with his risque bill boards, such as, ‘Crawley girl gives birth to pitbull’, ‘Schizopherenic kills her self twice horror’, or the banning of British Airways staff from his shops, on account of their strike one Christmas, which interrupted John’s holidays and subsequently featured on the The News at 10. You get the picture, so I won’t go on... OK, maybe a few more: The paying of park-

ing fines in coppers, served in a bowl of strawberry jelly, or the huge poster, above his shop, of him on the lavatory. It’s clear John’s trouble-maker gene had raised it’s head again, to the delight of many, and he even roped his staff into it - namely the ageing Denise, who accompanied him in all his shenanigans, both on and off the screen (YouTube: Look it up. It’s hilarious). However, whilst his antics weren’t appreciated by everyone, it did allow John to do what he loves and in 2010, he performed on stage at The Capitol Theatre, to a sell out crowd. “I really, really enjoyed every minute of that performance,” says John, “Laughter and full theatres, is what does it for me”. The performance went down so well, a 2nd was booked in the bigger Hawth Theatre in Crawley. I know... they let John into Crawley. Since 2011, John has appeared on tv and compared at live events across the district. He has even been Heston Blumenthal’s body double for 5 commercials. But in the main, John has been relatively quiet over the past 5 years. He explains: “I think it’s time to get back to what I enjoy doing and I’ve even managed to get Denise a day release from the home, to appear with me. Lucky it was a mild winter!” John’s new show ‘Come on my sofa’ can be seen at The Capitol on September 3 and tickets are available at the Capitol Box Office. All proceeds go to St Catherine’s Hospice. If you enjoy a good laugh and happy to be shocked book your ticket today as they have almost sold out, those who are slightly more sensitive might want to give this one photos by Toby Phillips a miss.

This is a break from their previous run of reviews and tells the story of a disparate group of tap dancers who end up performing in a show. Following the success of his play “Stepping Out”, Richard Harris has combined the talents of lyricist, Mary Steward-David, and composer, Denis King, to create a heartwarming, toe-tapping new musical

following the familiar story of the lives, loves and laughs of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap class in a dingy church hall. As the show unfolds, the songs delicately highlight the troubles and personalities of each of the characters. Mavis is the ex-professional

dancer who runs the class. Then there is bubbly Sylvia, nervous Andy, snobby (but well meaning) Vera, confident Maxine, Lynne who is very serious about dancing, anxious Dorothy, larger than life Rose and Geoffrey - the lone widowed male. Accompanying them on the piano, is the lugubrious

Mrs Fraser. Join F.A.M.E as they present “Stepping Out” at The Capitol, April 28-30, with performances every night: 7:45pm and a Saturday matinee: 2:30pm. To book, please contact the Capitol Box Office: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or call 01403 750220

Tap Dance at its stomping best Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com

CREGAN & CO Featuring Jim Cregan Friday 15 April 8pm

Tuesday 26 April 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley A brand new show in the genres of Tap Dogs and Blue Man Group, Tap Factory was created by Vincent Pausanias, to showcase tap dance at its very best. Vincent has been supported by Gilles Guenat (multiple world champion of Tap Dance) and Jérémie Champagne (Finalist of So You Think You Can Dance, France) who have both been involved in the creative process from the beginning. Vincent wanted to create a Tap

show, but he also used his extensive experience, as a director of many different shows, to introduce other disciplines, such as percussion, acrobatics, hip hop and comedy, to make Tap Factory a show like no other. This dynamic work comes to the UK direct from sell out tours in Europe and South America, as part of a World tour, and will be tapping its way onto The Hawth stage on April 26, 7.30pm. This fusion between these amazing artists (the best in their own

fields of discipline) and range of styles, creates a unique show where amazing performances, exciting rhythms and powerful energy join together to create a high octane spectacular. The mood sweeps dramatically from delicate peaceful passages to loud angry industrial aggression and laugh out loud humour. Tap Factory is where ‘Stomp meets Tap Dogs!’ and the rhythm never stops.

Tickets priced £24 (discounts: £22) are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and at www.hawth. co.uk.

Slinfold comes in at no 2 for Britain’s most beautiful places to live

From quaint villages to historic hamlets and secluded seaside hideouts, the UK is home to thousands of beautiful places to live - and now the most aesthetically pleasing of all have been named by local property specialist Leaders. Kevin Shaw, national sales director at Leaders, says: “Studies show people with a home in

calm and attractive surroundings are happier than those who live in towns and cities, and in the UK we are blessed to have such a huge selection of beautiful places to live. “If you are thinking of making a fresh start in a new area and would love to live in a picturesque location, why not consider the towns and villages that have

made our top five most beautiful places to live?” 5) Ombersley, Worcestershire Ombersley dates back to the eighth century, when the village was referred to in a charter granted to Saint Egwin of Evesham Abbey. The distinctive style of many of its properties - based on a black and white timber frame - sets it apart from many other villages of a similar era and gives it a picture postcard feel. 4) Blakeney, Norfolk The north Norfolk seaside village of Blakeney offers a slower pace of life and delightful views across uninterrupted marshland and the North Sea. The shingle and sand spit next to the village is as popular with walkers and playful children as it is with rare birds and plants. Away from the picturesque coastline, Blakeney offers quiet streets with flint cottages and traditional tea rooms. 3) Burford, Oxfordshire Burford is considered to be the gateway to the Cotswolds. This beautiful old town is centred on its high street, which slopes gently towards the river. Ancient cottages and shops that still bear a resemblance to Tudor times line the streets. Exploring Burford’s tiny side streets and quota of old

pubs offers further opportunities to experience life from yesteryear. 2) Slinfold, West Sussex Sussex is a county packed with quintessential English villages - and none are more impressive than Slinfold, which lies about four miles west of Horsham. At its centre is a magnificent church, which was rebuilt in 1861 and is based on a classic design with tower and spire. Slinfold also offers a great mix of properties, including sprawling country estates and spacious family homes. 1) Brockenhurst, Hampshire Set in the heart of the New Forest National Park’s heritage area, Brockenhurst is a village with bundles of charm and history. The area is home to wild ponies, deer, donkeys and cows, all of which are known to roam the high street, as well as a number of weirs that join to flow as one through Brockenhurst. Locals have the enchanting forest at their fingertips, a selection of warm and inviting pubs to enjoy and beautiful views in every direction. For advice you can trust on all aspects of the property market, contact your local Leaders branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

Horsham U12 boys are through to their age group Regional Finals Day on April 17. Their Manager Jerry Chinn told the District Post: “They played six matches in the Sussex section of the seven a side tournament and won every game, conceding just a single goal. In the Sussex finals at Hurstpierpoint School they beat Eastbourne in the semi and Chichester in the Final. Although they’re small lads they play well as a unit and have done brilliantly to get through to the Regional Finals, where they’ll be competing against their counterparts from some of the biggest clubs. And the great thing is that five of our players will still be eligible to play again next year!” Horsham Boys U12 squad: Luke Masser, Sam Dexter, Noah Balfour, Drew Jamieson, Hamish Balfour, Fynn Marshall, Harry Mathias and William Plowright Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum three of Horsham’s Vets have been in Canberra representing England in their respective age groups in World Cup Masters Finals. Congratulations to Sue Crake for her gold medal after her England side beat New Zealand – and to Suzy Clapp and Ian Brown for earning silvers in their finals against Australia. The 2015 BRDC F4 Champion Will Palmer gets his 2016 season underway this weekend (April16/17), as the 19-year-old heads to Motorland Aragon in Spain for the opening round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 championship. The Southwater based driver has graduated to racing in Europe this year with the French R-ACE GP team, and will be looking to carry his impressive pre-season

form into the first meeting of the season. Will has featured amongst the top-10 in nearly every official test leading up to this weekend’s opening three races finishing eighth quickest, and fifth fastest rookie, in last week’s Eurocup test at the same circuit. A very talented field of drivers will contest the Eurocup championship this year, with each trying to emulate last year’s champion Jack Aitken to claim the 2016 crown. Alongside Will at R-ACE GP is Belgian Max Defourny, who returns for his second year in Formula Renault

having finished fourth last year in the Northern European Cup, and Frenchman Julien Falchero. Will said: “The final test went quite well overall. The conditions were quite tricky with huge winds throughout the two days but it was good to see we were never too far from the top. Looking ahead to the first race this weekend, my goal will be to have three solid races scoring good points in each to build a strong foundation for the rest of the year.”

Ten-acious Horsham finish season on a massive high Saturday April 9 – South League Premier Div. 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 10 - 2 Woking

Already promoted Horsham gave already relegated Woking a comprehensive thrashing in the last league game of the season. Outgoing Horsham Captain Duncan Howarth told the District Post: “At our team meeting I said I wanted us to finish as the highest scoring team in the league – and that’s exactly what we’ve done, with 79 goals and only champions London Edwardians have conceded fewer. We’re unbeaten this year and have really steamrollered through to Premier Division One!” The game was over almost before it had begun with quick goals from John Burroughs and Matt Hough immediately confirming Horsham’s supremacy, then Joey Humphreys chipped into an open goal and Hough scooped over the keeper before Richard Blakesley gave Horsham a five nil advantage at the break. Soon after the restart Jack Dean and Joey Humphreys found the net until leading league scorer Dean astounded the large crowd by patting in a soaring

pitch long goal kick for his 23rd of the season. Totally against the run of play Woking scored, quipping: “We’re right back in this lads!” They did score again but Cirdec Atkinson promptly netted Horsham’s ninth ahead of Matt Hough’s third, rounding off the stunning 10-2 triumph. Horsham’s highest win of the season could have been even bigger – Joey Humphreys hit the post and a goal was disallowed. Jack Dean said: “I’ll be going to university next season, either Newcastle or Exeter, so it would

Meanwhile Eastbourne, Marlow and Oxford Hawks go down with Woking. Horsham Men’s 1s last appearance of the season will be in the Sussex Cup Final on Sunday April 24 when they play Eastbourne at East Grinstead, the Men’s 2nd XI also featuring on that finals day.

Aquathlon series off to flying start Cottesmore foursome triumph in County Championships Horsham Tri Club’s aquathlon series started

Junior Golf Dave Smith - Sports Editor Just three days after Josh Greig, Josh Dance and Peter Thomas were pipped for the county 3 man team championships by 1 shot, Benedict Carter joined the three Cottesmore youngsters

for the county foursomes championship, The Parsons Memorial Trophy, and the four of them won by a big 8 stroke margin. In the 36 hole foursomes event it was the two Josh’s that led the way with 39 points with Peter and Benedict close behind with 37points. In the afternoon

Peter and Benedict maintained their consistency with another 37 points while the two Josh’s scored 34 points. This was a great result for the four promising juniors who will be looking to add to the silverware throughout the summer.

Benedict Carter, Josh Grieg, Josh Dnace and Peter Thomas

Triathlon Horsham Tri Club’s annual aquathlon series got off to a great start with competitors taking part in the 200mtr pool swim followed be either a 3.6km or 5km run around Horsham Park. The glorious sunshine made the event even better with some good times recorded by those competing in their first event. For those coming back from last year’s events it

was a good test to see if any improvements had been made. Competitor Gary Tomlinson said “It was a lot of fun and good motivation to go and work on my swimming technique! I’ve booked in for May’s event to see if I can make some progress over the next month”. The next event is on Saturday May 7 and further details can be found at horshamtriclub.co.uk/ events/go-tri-events/

YM suffer second successive heavy home defeat Saturday April 9 - SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 – 4 Eastbourne Town Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter Horsham YMCA slipped to sixth in the Premier Division standings on Saturday, as they suffered a successive 4-0 home defeat at the hands of second-placed Eastbourne Town. Defender Callum Sherriff stabbed the visitors in front from close range midway through the first period, before skipper Wes Tate doubled Town’s advantage from the penalty spot right on the stroke of half time. Jason Taylor made it 3-0 shortly after the restart and Brett Patton then added late gloss to the result when he netted Eastbourne’s fourth, six minutes from the end. Although the score line somewhat flattered the away side, YM’s defensive frailties ensured that their recent poor run of form continued. Peter Buckland’s side have picked up just seven points from an available twenty-one since the start of March, and will drop a further

league spot to seventh if local rivals Loxwood win their game in hand. The YM manager commented: “If you’ve lost 4-0 and you’ve been well and truly beaten, you can often put your hands up, but I feel a little bit cheated. It just seemed that every bit of bad luck today was for us and every bit of good fortune fell for them. They definitely weren’t four goals better than us. It sounds ridiculous to say after a 4-0 defeat, but I felt that we deserved something out of the game. Even at 3-0 down we had three opportunities to bring it level at 3-3. Where we finish makes no difference, but what does matter is that we carry on believing in ourselves and keep a bit of confidence. That does always carry on into the next season and I’ve just said to the players that there wasn’t a great deal wrong today. An outsider looking in will see the 4-0 and think that it’s another game where YM’s season has crashed, but it wasn’t like that at all.” YM Team: Fox, Gathern (Buchanan 90+4), Crane, Gunner, Evans, Hibbert, Dugdale, Beckles (Donaldson 60), Brown, Schaaf, Smith (N. Sullivan 60)

Heath overcome much improved Rangers Saturday April 9 - SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2 - 0 St Francis Rangers Football Andrew Crisp - Football Reporter Back in December St Francis Rangers were given the unenviable title as “The Worse Football Team in England” with a goal difference which stood at minus 111 from 18 league games having conceded a staggering 112 and scored just once. Add the 29 goals they leaked in five cup matches it meant Rangers were shipping almost seven goals per match at a rate of one every 13 minutes and that record was worse than any other club in the top nine tiers of English football. Since then there have been major changes to the team, a new manager and a completely different set of players to the team that played Heath back in November and although they are still bottom they came into this game in good form with just one defeat in five games and that was a narrow 1-0 loss to in-form Chichester City. However it didn’t take Heath long to break the deadlock when Andy Waddingham played a long ball forward over the Rangers

defence allowing Jake Holmes to run onto and place a shot wide of the keeper Elliott Williams for the simplest of goals with just 5 minutes played. The visitors looked dangerous on the break and Rangers Rob Atkinson went on a dazzling forward run into the box beat two defenders before shooting for goal but Stuart Chester had tracked his run and cleared off the line On 30 minutes and against the run of play, Scott Weller received the ball wide on the right, cut inside and hit a left foot shot from distance that swerved in the air beating Williams at the near post and giving Heath a 2-0 half-time lead. Ten minutes into the restart Rangers were forced to replace Williams through injury with an outfield player taking over and Heath immediately tested out the stand-in keeper who did well to save from Tim Martin. Heath dominated the play but despite long spells of possession they rarely threatened after that and held on to comfortably to win their 17th league game of the season. Team: M.Chester, Godfrey, Robinson, Flack, Waddingham, S.Chester, Lyons (McDermott 60), Mutungi (D.Robinson 65), Andrade, Holmes, Weller (Martin 46).

Bowlers offer open days for beginners Bowls Dave Smith - Sports Editor The lighter evenings are here and the sun is threatening to shine so it is that time of the year when the District’s bowlers come out of hibernation. Many clubs offer pre-season ‘taster’ sessions at open days and recruitment evenings creating a good opportunity for those wanting to give the game of lawn bowls a try. Storrington Bowls Club has open mornings on April 23, April 24, April 30, May 1, May 7, & May 8 starting at 10am; flat soled shoes such as trainers is all that is required. Horsham Park Bowls Club is opening its doors on Saturday April 23 at 11am for an informal ‘roll up’ and again on Sunday April 24 when there will be an informal ‘drive’ at 2.30pm. Newcomers welcome to join either or both of the days. Billingshurst Bowling Club opens for the 2016 season at 2.00pm on Saturday April 23 and then have open evenings on April 29 and then every Tuesday, Thursday & Friday in May from 6.00pm to 7.30pm, where new members and beginners are most welcome.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK At our team meeting I said I wanted us to finish as the highest scoring team in the league – and that’s exactly what we’ve done Duncan Howarth

Safe to say – Horsham are champions Prolific striker Terry Dodd has had a superb season

Photo by John Lines Tuesday April 12 - SCFL Premier Division Hailsham Town 0 - 3 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Put the lard on ice! Horsham are all but Champions and with it comes a return to the Ryman League at the first time of asking. The promotion party will be officially held on Saturday when last night’s hosts turn visitors and the

formality of the Hornets needing another point is secured. The reality is Horsham are already champions as nearest challengers Eastbourne Town would need to win both their remaining matches, and overcome a massive 29 goal difference in doing so, while Horsham lose their two. Horsham made the perfect start to the match when after just 9 minutes of play they took the lead through an Ashley Jones close range header following a nod across

the area from captain Joe Shelley. If Horsham thought that lowly Hailsham Town were going to lie down they were mistaken as the home side battled to get back into the match. This however is a strong well organised Horsham team that know how to defend as well as put the ball away at the other end and the Hornets comfortably took the slender lead into the break. Any worries that the large contingent of travelling support had were dispelled within 3 minutes

Hornets dig out a vital win Kieran Pamment opening the scoring

Photo by John Lines Saturday April 9 - SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne United AFC 0 - 3 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham’s last few matches have hardly been football classics but at this stage of the season, and with so much at stake, it’s about getting the results and Horsham have done that week in week out. The full time score made it look like a walk over for the Hornets but it was far from it with the nervy looking Horsham playing well below the high standard of football that they have produced all season.

Eastbourne United had an early chance that was saved by ‘keeper James Shaw before a long stoppage due to a head injury to United’s Zac Dove earned Kieran Pamment a yellow card for a high boot. When play got going again Joe Shelley just failed to connect twice to corner kicks and that was about it in terms of excitement in a very dull half until it came to first half stoppage time. Pamment broke into the box and with just ‘keeper Callum Christie to beat he shot against the post. Then 30 seconds later, and deep into stoppage time, Pamment made up for his miss by connecting with a long ball at the far post to tap in for a Horsham half time lead. The second half could not pos-

sibly have been as bad as the first, but it had a good attempt. Horsham did start better and had more efforts than their hosts throughout but it was very patchy. The usually sharp Terry Dodd missed a couple of good chances followed by defender Ashley Jones, who headed wide when he should have hit the target. Without really looking in danger all the time the lead was held by the solitary goal Horsham were vulnerable and it was with great relief when with 6 minutes of normal time remaining Pamment scored his and his teams’ second. After collecting Bradley Lewis’ through ball the Hornets forward rounded ‘keeper Christie and slotted the ball into the net. A very flattering third goal from substitute Evan Archibald followed 4 minutes into added time when he was played in by Ryan Storrie and had time to walk the ball into the empty goal. Horsham now have third bottom Hailsham Town between them and a return to the Ryman League. They travel to East Sussex on Tuesday night to play them and then host them at Gorings Mead on Saturday. Horsham Team: Shaw, Duncan, Knee, Keehan, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Lewis, Dodd, Pamment, Boswell. Subs: Archibald, Atkinson, Chadwick, Storrie.

of the restart when once again captain fantastic Shelley won the ball and played Terry Dodd in on goal from where he fired the ball past Town ‘keeper Phil Hawkins. With the match - and with it the title - in the bag, Horsham played some nice football which earned its reward just over the hour mark when front-man Dodd tapped in Evan Archibald’s pin point cross for his 34th goal of what has been a prolific season for the striker. Late drama saw a red card for Kevin

Keehan for reacting badly to a robust challenge but the 10 men were not threatened further and the whistle signalled success for Dom Di Paola and his team, not only in this match but over the entire season. Now for Saturday and to put the icing on the cake, or should it be put the lard in the sandwich! Horsham Team: Shaw, Duncan, Knee, Keehan, Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Lewis, Dodd, Archibald, Boswell. Subs: Storrie, Atkinson, Chadwick, Pamment, Fogden.

Heath’s good form continues in big win against Loxwood Tuesday April 12 - SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 5 - 2 Loxwood Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor In what can be considered a very good season for Heath, despite major injury issues throughout the campaign, the good form continued on Tuesday evening with a big win over local rivals Loxwood. The defeat leaves Loxwood’s hopes of a top four finish looking very unlikely. It was the visitor’s who took the lead however through Ross Swain after 33 minutes and that narrow advantage remained throughout an end to end first period with Swain’s goal separating the sides. The game was then turned on its head in the second half with two quick Heath goals from Tim Martin and Jake Holmes. 7 minutes after the restart Martin struck the equaliser followed 3 minutes later by Holmes’ goal that gave the home side the lead.

Striker Tiago Andrade was next in on the act when he made it 3-1 just after the hour mark. In a second half flushed with goals Holmes then got his second of the night to increase the advantage for Heath even further. A minute after Holmes goal Heath old boy Olly Moore pulled one back for Loxwood but Heath made it 5 - 2 with 3 minutes remaining when Andy Waddingham got himself on the score sheet. So with two difficult games remaining – away to Eastbourne Town tomorrow (Saturday April 16) and away to Shoreham the Saturday after – Heath have amassed a creditable 59 points and a certain mid-table finish. Manager Steve Painter can be proud of his and his sides achievements - accomplished with a lot of home grown talent – and will now be looking ahead to next season and to push on again. Heath Team: M Chester, S Chester, J Robinson, Flack, Attwater,Waddingham, McDermott, Wellar, Martin, Andrade, Holmes, Lyons. Subs: D Robinson, Meach, Clarke.
