Sun soaked English Festival could be repeated phil dennett News Editor
Horsham ‘s first English Festival could be become an annual event, say supporters. Thousands were entertained over two days with a combination of traditional English dance, music, classic vehicles, traditional food, drink and entertainments. Afterwards Dick Streeter, who was heavily involved in both days, said: “It was great to see the ideas we had worked on all come to fruition. Of course, the weather certainly helped us, it was really ‘steaming’ hot at times but with the right support from Horsham District Council, I feel we have set
It was great to see the ideas we had worked on all come to fruition. the foundations for a great new annual event for the town and I am proud to have been part of it.” Samaritans event organiser Caroline Thomas was delighted with the Sunday saying, “I am very grateful to all of the volunteers, businesses and Horsham District Council which together helped us relaunch our annual Horsham Folk Club Day as the Horsham English Festival Sunday. Given its success I think the event has some real
traction and I’m looking forward to reviewing what we did and what might be possible next year.” Saturday’s Broadwood Day of Dance fill the town with a riot of colour, movement and sound as more Morris dancers than you could shake a stick at performed. This year more than 25 dancing ‘sides’ were represented, together with Saturday’s Carfax Local Produce and Craft market plus the new feature of a display of Morris Minor cars on the Forum. Sunday’s Horsham Folk Club concert in aid of Crawley and Horsham Samaritans was extended with displays of classic cars from Arun Motors, the latest Jaguars from Harwoods and classic bikes from Dresda supported by over 20 privately owned classic British bikes including Nortons, Triumphs, Vincents and BSAs. King Henry Eighth and his Tudor court and the Loxwood Joust brought more fun and more than a smattering of history to proceedings given weight by the evocative Traction engine farming contractor display from Horsham Traction Company. Elsewhere in the Carfax, Hepworth’s brewery, Help the Aged’s Tea Marquee and the Horsham Rotary LINC bake stall vied for taste buds attention with hot street food from Garlic Wood Farm and Pig in a Jacket and the Pitcairn shell fish stall. For children there were Busy Days face painting, a tea cups fun fair ride and traditional games including a coconut shy and the walking balloons stall in Swan Walk Shopping Centre.

When an artist went to war War artist Gordon Rushmer has an exhibition at Horsham Museum for the rest of this month. And art fans got an insight into his work last week. Gordon gave two talks at the Museum and Art Gallery, on Thursday and Saturday. when he detailed his experiences and paintings in a free talk. Gordon’s work has been exhibited by Tate Britain London and The Imperial War Museum, and purchased by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Royal Archive, the House of Lords and National Library Wales, as well as other national and international art galleries and museums that have acquired his work. Also noted for his depiction of calm as well as conflict, Gordon, who lives near Billingshurst, is a renowned landscape painter, often of tranquil scenes in contrast to his visits to war hot spots such as Bosnia and Afghanistan . Gordon’s exhibition, called A Wealden Artist Goes to War, runs at the museum until May 28. Pictured are Gordon and one of his works, a painting of St Botolph’s Church in the former Saxon parish of Botolphs in West Sussex.
Peter says thanks for life saved
A popular football commentator whose life was saved by Horsham first-aiders has helped present a defibrillator to the club where he suffered a heart attack. Peter Brackley is best-known for being the voice of Channel 4’s Italian football coverage in the 1990s and providing the in-game commentary for the Pro Evolution Soccer computer game series. Voted as one of 50 best-loved sports commentators in the UK, he has also worked with BBC, ITV and Sky. A life-long Brighton and Hove Albion fan, Mr Brackley was appearing at a fundraising event at the Holbrook Club in Horsham for the football club’s charity, Albion in the Community, when he suffered a heart attack. volunteer from Horsham Community First Responders treated him before he was taken to hospital by ambulance. A defibrillator fetched from a nearby row of shops was used to treat Mr Brackley on the night and he made a full recovery.
But I certainly owe them a huge debt of gratitude for what they did to rescue me in my hour of need North West Sussex Seagulls, a Horsham-based Brighton supporters club, had hosted the night for the Albion group and was able to donate about £400 raised during the evening for the machine , while Albion In The Community gave £2,000 from its “Community Shield “ fund in recognition of the work of the First Responders.

After making a recovery Mr Brackley returned to the Holbrook Club to present the venue with the new defibrillator. Mr Brackley, from East Preston, said: “It is, of course, only through the expertise and dedication of the extra-ordinary people who rushed to my aid that I am still alive to tell the tale. “I have virtually no recollection of my episode ,which perhaps is just as well, but am totally aware now of how their prompt and so well-drilled response kept me on the planet. “As with the hospital team who took over later that night at the Royal Sussex, I know they don’t ask for thanks, their reward is knowing what they have achieved in helping save lives. “But I certainly owe them a huge debt of gratitude for what they did to rescue me in my hour of need. “They all do amazing work, and long may it continue.”

School team meets challenge of change Staff and students have helped a school win a careers accolade for the sixth year running. The Investors in Careers award was achieved again by The Weald School at Billingshurst. The Award is a quality standard for the management of careers education and guidance in schools and further education colleges. It is now the most widely used quality award of its kind, recognized nationally across the country. The school says that the use of an inde-
pendent external assessor gives the award special credence. The schools also says its staff members have worked hard to embrace changes by coming up with innovative ideas to support all their students in their choice of future career options. An assessor visited the school to see how much of an impact some of those changes had made. Pictured from left Jayne Durham business manager, Sarah Wilson careers manager and Kate Smith teacher.

Choir in town on Saturday
Photo by Izzy Lewis, The Weald School
A choir that started 11 years ago performs on Saturday in Horsham. Cantatrice Ladies Choir began in Steyning and in Horsham as two sister choirs. Horsham Choir has 40 women and Steyning has more than 100 members. They say they can have a big impact when they perform together, as they sometimes do. Members sing a variety of different styles and genres of music from choral and religious to pop and musicals and some film music too. They also sing in different languages and have also included

African walking songs and gospel songs. Zoe Peate is musical director, and the group says it likes to welcome new members, who can try a free taster session at one of its rehearsals. In addition to singing there are usually summer and Christmas socials at the home of members and sometimes also a social dinner at a restaurant in the Horsham area. The group said: “Singing is extremely good for you. It is good for your health, for your general wellbeing and it makes you happy. You meet lots of new people and make new friends too.”
“If an adrenaline rush is your kind of thing, performing will give you that rush and exhilaration. “Applause is almost like a drug and gives you quite a ‘high’ to go home with after your performance.” The next concert is on May 14 in St Mary’s Church, The Causeway, Horsham, at 7pm. Tickets are £8.00 each and can be obtained from Ragdolls in The Bishopric or on the door. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays in The Salvation Army Hall, Booth Way from 1.15 to 2.45pm. The choirs are pictured at functions.

Police blitz targets airport and jet drunks Drunks ruining holidays for people with their bad behaviour at Gatwick Airport and on planes are being targeted by police. The rowdy holiday-makers who drink far too much alcohol are being warned to know their limits or face up to two years in jail. They will also be told they cannot take their intended flight. They include people on stag and hen parties before weddings who let their drinking get out of control. The move is a reaction to incidents of being drunk and disorderly, making threats to kill, assault, public order, interfering with cabin crew and being drunk on board an aircraft. Earlier this year A flight to the Caribbean was delayed at Gatwick for several hours after a group of drunken passengers was abusive to staff. Sussex Police has been working closely with the airport , its pubs and bars, and airlines for several years to reduce and control the is-
sue of drunkenness on flights. Now, for the second successive year, the force will increase patrols as part of Operation Disrupt, a campaign committed to specifically target problematic groups and individuals during the summer months. Sergeant Darren Taylor, of the Gatwick Airport Policing Team, said: “We deal with disruptive passengers all year round, but we recognise the problem tends to peak in the summer months – often when there are a lot of stag and hen parties – and that’s why we run a specific operation at this time of year. “Working with the airlines, we’re able to target a number of long and short haul routes where we feel there may be issues. We’ll also be increasing patrols around the airside and around licensed premises to ensure people are aware of the rules and their responsibilities. “The bottom line is if people are drunk and disorderly, they will be
refused carriage. It’s as simple as that.” Any individual convicted of being drunk on board an aircraft faces a maximum sentence of up to two years’ imprisonment or a heavy fine. A total of 208 flights were covered as part of the operation in the summer of 2015. Of these, 118 incidents of disruption were reported, while officers also responded to further reports of problematic passengers on other routes. Sgt Taylor added: “We’ll be keeping an eye on people from the point they check in to the point they board an aircraft” Operation Disrupt runs from 1 June to 30 September.

Kids café serve up success Pupils with posters
A café run by children proved a hit at Billingshurst. It was judged the best moneymaker at Billingshurst Primary School’s Spring Fair, which youngsters turned into a showcase for budding entrepreneurs. This year, enterprising pupils raised more than £1,700 at the event by setting up a marketplace of stalls and games.
With each class responsible for developing and running a stall, some healthy competition between year groups ensured the afternoon was the most successful to date. Pupils from Year 6 took the most amount of money at their café followed closely by the children in early years with their lucky cups. The children also helped to promote the event with a poster
competition sponsored by Fowlers Estate Agents, in Billingshurst High Street. Students were invited to design a poster and a record 120 pupils took part. Acting as judge for the fifth consecutive year, Keith Hutchinson from Fowlers Estate Agents had the difficult task of choosing the winning entries from each Key Stage. The overall winners were William Silvester from reception and Lily Smith from Key Stage 1. Their winning designs were displayed in the Estate Agent’s window on the High Street, with hundreds of other entries decorating the gates of the school. Helen Williamson, head teacher at Billingshurst Primary School said: “Thanks to the resourcefulness of our pupils the Spring Fair is one of our fundraising highlights. This event depends on the collaboration of pupils across all year groups, and as a result they feel a great sense of pride when the day proves such a success.” Keith Hutchinson, manager at Fowlers Estate Agents said:“Each year we look forward to taking part in Billingshurst Primary School’s Spring Fair and each year the pupils never fail to impress with the quality of their art-work and ideas. We are proud to be involved in an event which encourages an entrepreneurial spirit.”

Students help the next generation Student teams from a Horsham college gave up an evening to help pupils from schools outside the area to make informed choices about further education. Events were held at Collyer’s college and Central Sussex College’s Haywards Heath campus, which has been earmarked for closure. Collyer’s student Owain McLoughlin, who previously attended Oakmeeds School in Burgess Hill, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to speak to pupils and parents to give them the full flavour of Collyer’s life from a student perspective.” Gemma Lester, who previously attended the Priory School in Dorking, was keen to Giving advice

Good sports have better facilities
Sport players have new facilities to hone their skills in. Collyer’s college in Horsham has opened its new sports centre, with Principal Sally Bromley cutting the ribbon. The sports centre now includes a viewing area to the sports hall, significantly increased storage space for specialist equipment, as well as improved disability access and a high specification changing area. The project has been funded by the college , Horsham District Council, Sport England and West Sussex County Council. VIP guests who have helped make the project a success attended the ceremony. These included Lindsey Butterfield from West

Head of Collyer’s Sport Academy John Burroughs acted as master of ceremonies. Sally Bromley said: “We are extremely grateful to the organisations that have helped fund this work and everyone here celebrating with us today. Without their vision and support for the project we would not have been able to build this excellent facility. It is particularly pleasing that this is a facility that is to be shared with the local community and is accessible to sport enthusiasts with a

He said: “It will act as a mutual resource that supports not only those coming in to participate, but also the student leaders in the college, as they are able to interact and improve their own coaching abilities simultaneously”. detector is activated. These specialist alarms can save lives, alerting people to a fire in their home
It is vital that people who are deaf or hard of hearing ensure they have the right smoke alarm ... even if they remove their hearing aid at night. Where appropriate, the service can also fit radio-linked smoke
alarms connected to 24-hour operator-monitored centre, which is automatically alerted should the smoke alarm go off ensuring that a 999 call is placed to the fire service. Last year up to March 2016 the service fitted 235 of the pillow pad detectors and over 3,500 radiolinked smoke detectors during Home Safety Visits. Community Fire Safety Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Jackie Boyle, said: “It is vital that people who are deaf or hard of hearing ensure they have the right smoke alarm technology in their home to protect them and that they test them regularly, to make sure they work. “A specialist alarm system provides valuable time to escape from a house blaze. Without it, lives could be lost. “Anyone in doubt about the alarm they need can contact our Community Safety team. You may be eligible for a free Home Safety Visit where we can advise you on planning an escape route, positioning alarms and, of course, ensure that the correct working smoke alarm is fitted. Simply call us on 0845 872 9719 or visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/fire.” British Standard BS5446-3:2005 specifies smoke alarm kits for deaf and hard of hearing people. Products made to this standard give deaf people assurance of quality smoke alarms designed to meet their needs.

remains to build confidence in victims to come forward and speak to us, which is why I am encouraged by these increases. “These also follow a large increase last year of 34%. We have worked very hard, both internally and externally to raise awareness of what constitutes hate crime and how people can report it to us.” “I am confident that the positive work we have done in relation to increasing awareness, especially through our Hate Crime Ambassador initiative, the publicising of successful cases and our online engagement activities have been a significant factor in the increased levels of recorded hate crime. “If you have been a victim of or have witnessed a hate crime, I would urge you to call us on 101 or 999 if it is an emergency. Disabled people suffered a 75 per cent increase in hate attacks in the past year in Sussex, latest figures reveal. Overall recorded hate crime rose by 28 per cent in West and East Sussex. But verbal attacks against disabled people soared by 74.5 per cent from 106 to 185, despite widespread efforts over the past few years to educate people about disability and the high profile given to sport for the disabled. But despite the large increase Sussex Police say the overall figures are encouraging because they indicate more people feel they can report incidents. During April 2015 to March 2016, the total number of recorded hate crimes rose from 1352 in 2014/15 to 1728* in 2015/16, an increase of 28%. The number of non-crime hate incidents (those reported but not pursued as crimes) also rose during the same period, from 447 in 2014/15 to 502* in 2015/16, an increase of 12% Assistant Chief Constable Laurence Taylor, who has responsibility for local policing across Sussex, said: “We know that hate crimes and incidents in Sussex and across the country are under reported - our goal

Firefighters want residents who are deaf or hard of hearing to make sure they have the right smoke alarms in their home. More than 900,000 people in the UK are severely or profoundly deaf and would be unable to hear an ordinary smoke alarm at night. Students quiz police officer Students asked the questions when a Detective Inspector called. They were making inquiries into the world of policing at a session at Collyer’s college in Horsham. Mark Eyre was detained for a while answering a wide variety of queries. Having served 35 years in Sussex Police, Mark spoke to tudents about his varied career. He also explained the various entry requirements, what the job is like on a day-to-day basis and the likely situations an officer would encounter as a member of the police force. Mark also talked about what career opportunities are available within the force. Mr Eyre told the students: “Thank you for the opportunity to engage with such enthusiastic students. It was great to be able to discuss areas of interest and share information on policing, and to encourage others to embark

on an exciting and rewarding career path.” Lucy Hargreaves, from the college’s progression directorate, who organised the Session, said: “Our students enjoyed the event and were interested in listening to what a career in the police force could offer. Mark was excellent.” Collyer’s assistant Principal, Melanie Russell said:: “Massive thanks to Mark for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to our students.” Senior Tutor Ian McAlister said: “Record numbers of students have taken part in progression events run by the college over the course of this year, which is fantastic. This informative event is yet another to add to the success story.” Picture 1 shows: Detective Chief Inspector Mark Eyre with Collyer’s students after his Q&A session (picture by Lucy Hargreaves).
Drivers name A272 and A264 roads among best Drivers in a survey say two roads in Horsham district are among the best in Sussex. The A23 has been declared as the best road to drive on through Sussex, closely followed by the A272 and the A264, both near Horsham. The results stem from a survey carried out by family run Skoda dealership Station Garage in Horsham, which questioned hundreds of South East based residents about their favourite drive, taking into consideration the scenery, road surface, traffic and speed limits. With 32% of those questioned championing the A23 from London to Brighton, closely followed by 23% preferring the A272 from Horsham to Winchester and just 9% voting for the A264 through Five Oaks, the garage says the survey
offered an interesting insight into drivers’ top three preferences in the county. Other roads in the region fared reasonably evenly, with 6-7% of respondents voting for the A21, A24, A29, A259, and A281. Trailing behind with just 3% of votes was the A27 which spans Whiteparish in Wiltshire to Pevensey on the East Sussex coastline. James Thorpe, dealer principal at Station Garage in Broadbridge Heath, commented: “As a family run dealership proud to be situated in Sussex, we were intrigued to find out what drivers in the South East thought our best roads were. We only moved our dealership’s premises into the county a few years ago but the difference in roads, drivers’
road etiquette and general environs is actually quite distinctive. “I think we can sometimes forget how lucky we are to be surrounded by such stunning scenery and, although there are always going to be issues with road surfaces and unexpected maintenance, the roads throughout our county offer some of the best drives in the UK.”

No public disclosure of flight paths until after consultation
Sir Roy McNulty with Cagne members and Bill Sorrell The Chairman of Gatwick, Sir Roy McNulty, has confirmed to CAGNE that the ‘mapping’ of the proposed flight path routes in the Arrivals Review will not be disclosed to the public until after the Arrivals Review public consultation closes. Arrivals Review team member, Graham Lake, confirmed this at the Gatwick Arrivals Review community meeting last week. Established in 2013, CAGNE represents communities east and west of Gatwick and fights for ‘fair and equitable distribution’ of aircraft noise on departures and arrivals. Other important facts from the meeting: The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) confirmed that there is nothing in the Arrivals Review to stop arriving flights joining the final approach to continue to be placed in narrow ‘swathes’, as they are now. CAA also confirmed that this would enable more airline slots for Gatwick.
NATS (that owns and operates air traffic control) confirmed that those communities that suffer arrivals above 4,000ft might not see any change either, as Government policy above that height is ‘concentration and to save CO2’, NOT ‘noise’. Gatwick intends to work with NATS to decide upon the arrival routing without reference to affected communities. In response to the findings, Chair of CAGNE, Sally Pavey, said, “Expecting communities to agree to undisclosed flight paths is asking them to trust Gatwick. Sadly, due to Gatwick’s past performance, we do not trust them to be ‘fair and equitable’ with the distribution of arrivals”. She added, “Residents were assured that if ‘concentration’ on departures had adverse effects on communities, flights would go back to how we use to know them - randomly distributed. However, after many organisation have requested
a reversal, ‘concentration’ remains unchanged and those on the ground are inflicted with unacceptable levels of aircraft noise”. Mrs. Pavey continued, “Gatwick is expecting us to agree to a blank sheet of paper as the CAA has confirmed that the placing of arrivals could remain narrowed on the final approach, and neither will the CAA detail the frequency of the number of flights per route. We could well end up with permanent ‘concentration’, (PBN), on arrivals as this is described as ‘aspirational’ in the Arrivals Review as a long-term target.” Gatwick Airport staged another Arrival Review public event on 27th April, 2016) offering speakers from the review team, Gatwick, the Civil Aviation Authority, NATS and EasyJet. Mr. Graham Lake, a member of the review team, hosted and gave an introduction to the timetable of the review. Also discussed at the meeting was the highly intrusive ‘whine’ made by the engines of A320 aircraft. CAGNE has worked with EasyJet on this problem but learned that while a large proportion of the airline’s fleet at Gatwick has been modified to reduce noise, completion of the work on all the fleet will fall outside of the 2017 deadline set by the Arrivals Review. CAGNE asked if a fine had been set for those airlines that do not comply, but learned this had yet to be set. EasyJet aircraft make up 47% of all the A320s that operate in and out of Gatwick. This type of aircraft represents 60% of all Gatwick flights. In the meeting, questions were asked as to why the Arrivals Review had not tackled night flights, as they are a major problem with sleep deprivation; and why Gatwick effectively encouraged night flights by charging little, if anything, for night landings. Responding, Gatwick’s Mr. Charles Kirwan-Taylor,
surprised the meeting by saying, “But we do charge for night landings.’ CAGNE can reveal that in the Gatwick ‘Conditions of Runways use 2016/2017 Final Schedule’, it states that there are no charges for landings from 00.00-04.59 hours. See attached scan. An additional major concern for CAGNE is that Mr. Lake said that the mapping of arrival routes would not be disclosed until after the end of the Arrivals Review public consultation period. This was confirmed by the Chairman of Gatwick Airport Limited on Thursday, thus it will only be NATS and Gatwick that have any say over how the mapping of flight paths is set for arrivals. CAGNE also asked the CAA to confirm that the Arrivals Review recommendation to move the ‘join’ (where arriving aircraft meet the final approach to the runway) to 8 miles out from the runway (from its current 10 miles) would be adopted, and if dispersal on routes would be implemented, or would flights remain in concentrated ‘swathes’ (the width of the flight path). The CAA confirmed that there is nothing in the Arrivals Review to change the narrow placing of arrivals onto the final approach by air traffic control. This will mean that those that already suffer ‘concentration’ of departures would then also suffer arrivals. Sally Pavey, Chair of CAGNE, who was present at both meetings said: “We are being asked to trust Gatwick but with the leader of the review confirming at the CAGNE AGM that departures had been ignored. Is it reasonable to expect us to agree to a blank sheet of paper on which NATS and Gatwick can draw flight path with impunity? And will they actually give us a fair and equitable distribution of aircraft for all on arrivals and
departures?” Much was asked about the formation of the Noise Management Board as Gatwick presented it as an original idea. However, Heathrow set up a group some time ago with many more community groups represented than Gatwick proposes, thus allowing more community voices to be heard. “Gatwick seems to have set out to split councils and community groups that suffer the impact of aircraft noise, by only allowing two representatives from each”, Mrs. Pavey said. “There are, however, many representatives from aviation and from those that stand to benefit from aviation growth such as Gatwick, the airlines, the CAA, NATS and the Department for Transport”. Furthermore, she said that the community groups may not be nominated by individual members of the public but must be nominated by councils or other organizations. “It is totally un-representational to have only two community groups on the board, when there are so many community groups from different areas and with different, legitimate, concerns, be they arrivals or departures, in the east or in the west. This is certainly not ’fair and equitable’”, Mrs. Pavey said. Mrs. Pavey added that many residents had also pinned their hopes for quieter skies on CDA (Continuous Descent Approaches) but NATS disappointed them by explaining that it is up to aircraft pilots to decide at what height they start Continuous Descent Approaches, although it could be set at 7,000ft. NATS confirmed that it only relies upon posters and leaflets to educate pilots and it is not always the same pilots who fly into Gatwick, so they are unable to guarantee CDA approaches.
Concepts for Changes to the Heart of Broadbridge Heath to Go on Show Proposals for changes to the heart of Broadbridge Heath are to be shown to the public next week as the major part of the Parish Council’s Annual Parish Meeting. “Broadbridge Heath has undergone major development over the last few years and we want to give all the residents a chance to see and comment on what is being
A new Neighbourhood Centre will be built by the end of 2017 and, with the through traffic being moved to the new East-West Link Road proposed to enhance the public spaces and buildings to support this development”, said Viv Edwards, Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Chairman. “A new Neighbourhood Centre will be built by the end of 2017 and, with the through traffic being moved to the new East-West Link Road, there may be an opportunity to remove the leylandi hedges and
open up and landscape the land between the Neighbourhood Centre and Village Centre buildings. The Village Centre building itself will be enhanced and traffic calming will be put in place in the old part of the village to deter through-traffic from rat running. We would like to show our residents what might happen and give them the opportunity to discuss the proposals with the providers and give their feedback.” West Sussex County Council will show drawings of the traffic calming around Billingshurst and Old Guildford Roads which is due to be built by the end of this year, Horsham District Council will display some early concepts for the new landscaping, Action in Rural Sussex will show the results of the questionnaire that asked what the community would like for the improvements to the Village Centre building and there will be early designs for the art installations that will be in front of the Neighbourhood Centre and distributed around the south of the village. The meeting on Monday 16th May will start at 7:30pm at The Village Centre, Wickhurst Lane. Entrance is free and refreshments will be provided.

GATWICK EXPANSION: THE FACTS ABOUT HORSHAM GATWICK DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW
Gatwick plans to increase the number of flights to and from the airport from 270,000 to 560,000. And night flight departures between 11pm and 7am would nearly double with many flying directly over our villages. That’s an airport bigger than Heathrow right next door to your home. MAKE NO MISTAKE – expansion at Gatwick really could happen. Recent polling of Londoners showed that 43% back expanding Gatwick over 36% for Heathrow. Gatwick thinks it will happen - they’ve spent millions on advertising. The Government has pledged to end this debate once and for all by making a decision this summer. If Gatwick is allowed to expand, Horsham will be exposed to constant aircraft noise, with no quiet time for our villages and others during westerly operations. And Gatwick won’t compensate you for this. Despite the massive new detrimental impacts – including a fall in house prices – Horsham is outside their arbitrary compensation area. Your family will be worse off and Gatwick will not give you a penny. So that’s major new noise disruption and impacts on your quality of life, with nothing in return. Not to mention that our villages will suffer from increased road traffic, congestion and poor air quality.
DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE A NEIGHBOUR TO AN AIRPORT BIGGER THAN HEATHROW?

Young stars could repeat title success Team celebrates
DRIVING PRICES DOWN
CAR AND VAN SERVICING, REPAIRS AND MOTs Nightingale Road, Horsham Young table tennis players could repeat a national title they won for the first time. Tanbridge House School captured the Under -13s National School Team Table Tennis Championships, making them the best school team in the country in that age group. Because of their age, some of the players will be able to compete again in next year’s under-13 contest. Team organisers say this is a fantastic achievement for Horsham Spinners Table Tennis Club members Charlie Graham-Adams, Zach Hodges and Ollie Michell, as well as Horsham Table Tennis Club member, Jacob Evans. Last year representing Southwater Junior Academy, Graham-Adams, Hodges and Michell along with Sheel Malde, also from Horsham Spinners, won
the U11s event and this year stepping up to the under-13 age group, they have won another title. The club says Will Michell, Ollie’s brother, did a great job of coaching the team on the day. Spinners coach Rory Scott said ‘This is an incredible result, as three of the boys are still in the under-13 event next year and they won the under-11 event last year.” The first round of the finals, held in Hinckley, Leicestershire, was a comprehensive 7-1 win over St. Mary’s College, Hull, whereas the second match was a thrilling 5-3 victory over Longfield Academy from Darlington. Final opponents London Academy had won against Hull and drawn with Darlington, so a draw was needed by Tanbridge in the last round in order to take the national title.
It was a real nailbiter and came down to the last singles, with London leading 4-3. Ollie Michell stepped up to beat Shikhar Pandey 3-0 to get a draw in the match and overall victory. It was a real team effort, but Graham-Adams and Michell stood out, as they both won five out of six matches and both lost their one match by the smallest of margins.
Charlie said: “It feels brilliant to win. I think we won because of our team chemistry and the support we had from each other was brilliant as well.”

Shoppers’ hopes after firms take over Piries Place
Shoppers could see improvements made to Piries Place in Horsham town centre after two companies bought it. Developers Reef Estates confirmed that it had bought the site with construction and property consultants Arcus but there was no immediate news of any developments. Both firms are based in London. Residents regularly using the town centre have been wondering what might happen to the area after Waitrose moved to another site in the town last year, robbing it of a flagship store. The price for the purchase has not been disclosed and the firm says intends to release details of any proposals for the development at a later date. Will Rohleder, in charge of the

Many people are now reverting back to traditional crafts, both as a way of making a living, as a second top up income, or just as ‘hobbyists’. Whichever category they come into there is usually a great passion involved, those involved are more than happy to chat about how and why they started, and you can often find where stones, wood and other materials are sourced from, with much of it being local to Sussex. Amberley’s wood craftsmen all source their wood locally. The stick maker will collect his shanks (the stick part) from hedges or by befriending his local farmer, the bodgers wood being Ash, comes from Slindon, the woodturners will collect from friends, local arborist’s, and frequently from old buildings that are being renovated. Much of what is bought from the crafts people will generally outlive commercially produced items and often become passed down heirlooms. Bodgers now Woodturners Bodgers in the Buckinghamshire
area were known for their turned chair parts, whereas the Sussex Bodgers produced more stool legs for milking stools as dairy farming played a large part in the local landscape. Many were farm produced locally, along with wooden bowls, all using green wood (wood that has just been cut down). This has now been taken to a new level with electric lathes producing finer ware (usually using seasoned wood) and into the artistic category- Both Bodgers and Woodturners are resident craftsmen Besom brooms Traditional Birch or Heather twigs made into a head and attached to a handle usually hazelResident craftsman Walking stick maker Every farmer and shepherd would craft one from local hedgerows- Resident craftsman Jewellery Originally stones were threaded onto gut or vine and worn around the neck- Sussex has a long beach where stones were collectedSpinning & Knitting
Using the abundance of Southdown sheep fleeces after spinning into wool it was knitted into jumpers or woven- Cottage industry Bricks Wealden clay much sought after for high strength engineering bricks. Dew ponds were formed where clay was dug and made and fired into bricks, quite often you will find a dew pond very close to a brick bridge, saving transportSmithing The art of forming metal into useable items by heating and the hammering into shape. Every village and hamlet had one, horse shoes, fire pokers, spades and forks, farm equipment. The better ones made edge tools, billhooks, scythes, hooksLace One of the oldest forms of garment enhancement, collars and bodice’s on dresses, wedding dresses, doilies for covering water jugs, dressing table items. The bobbins are mostly turned wood now with ivory and bone being used in the past, some were whittled
with knives- Cottage industry Quilting Originally small pieces of fabric were sewn together mostly old clothes, made into bed coverings. Cottage industry Pottery Goes back almost to the beginning, rough shaped wet clay pots formed and baked- Resident tradesman Sussex was one of the predominant makers of ‘billhooks’ by local village smiths, also known as ‘edge tools’ because it was rich in hedges. This tool was predominately used in Hedge laying, the cutting of sturdy growth 95% through and bending down to form dense low hedge that was stock proof. Anything will be cut and intertwined to form this type hedge. Today although still practiced the petrol hedge cutter for domestic hedges and the tractor mounted type for farm work have replaced this cutting tool. The billhook was also the fundamental tool used in the cutting process in Coppicing. Using mainly Hazel, growth from 3 to 7 years old was cut back and turned into pea branches and runner bean sticks. Other uses were for hurdles, gates and light fences. The chainsaw is now usually used for the cutting process. Tree work was manually done with axes and 2 handled saws made by the local blacksmith and bodgers. This work is now done by chainsaws and rotovators have replaced spades and forks which were also made by these local craftsmen. All the above will be displayed at the Amberley \traditional crafts weekend by the sponsor ‘Seymour and Lisle Ltd’. Most of these crafts were in abundance all over Sussex, with local pockets of specific crafts where the need for it arose. Many of these crafts are now making resurgence after being featured on television programmes.
Oldest Surviving Member of Dads Army Coming to The Capitol
The oldest surviving member of the classic series, Dad’s Army, recently trod London’s red carpet at the premiere of the recent feature film, in which he reprises his original role of the vicar.
The originators of the series, David Croft and Jimmy Perry, chose Frank Williams to create the role of the wonderfully eccentric vicar who was always slightly tetchy, as he tried to come to terms with the
elderly platoon’s invasion of his beloved church hall. “It’s been simply wonderful to be part of something so special,” said Frank, “Although I have spent many years in various film and
television roles, being part of Dads Army is hard to beat.” Now, Frank is to reveal some of the secrets behind one of the most popular TV & Film successes of all time, in his latest stage presentation, More Tea Vicar? Presented by author and entertainer, Chris Gidney, who has spent 30 years in the entertainment profession and written 28 showbiz biographies (including Frank’s), the show is coming to The Capitol Horsham on May 15 at 2.30pm. Chris commented: “Everybody loves Dad’s Army. Even after forty years, the series continues to pull huge viewing figures, becoming one of the all-time classic ‘greats’. “It also bridges the age gap like no other. People of all ages love the live show, because it’s very interactive. We often have young children in the audience who are bigger fans than their parents. We invite the audience to be part of it and they can ask questions. Frank is a master at describing the most hilarious off-screen stories about the TV series and films.” Though a huge success, Dads
Army is only a small part of Frank’s career. As he embarks on an entertaining journey down memory lane, he re-lives some of the fascinating and comical highlights of a film, stage and television career, spanning over 50 years: “I’m looking forward to talking about the strange and remarkable things that the audience never see, like the time we were filming an episode of Dad’s Army and nearly got flattened by a runaway steam train, or when I watched myself on live TV being operated on, in Emergency Ward 10, in the comfort of my own home.” Whilst still best known as the vicar from Dad’s Army, Frank has worked with many of the ‘greats’, including Tommy Cooper, Harry Worth, Dick Emery and Morecambe & Wise, and has appeared in over 30 feature films, including 3 with Norman Wisdom. His numerous other television series credits count some of the early days of TV, including The Army Game, All Gas & Gaiters, Monty Python’s Flying Circus and You Rang M`Lord?

The Fureys come to Horsham
Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com
THE FUREYS Saturday 14 May 7.30pm
Legends of Irish music and song, The Fureys, will be performing at The Capitol, Horsham on May 14 at 7.30pm. The Fureys, now in their 38th year on the road, have been sharing their musical talent a long time even longer if they take into consideration that George, Davey and their late brother Paul, were playing as the Buskers, and Eddie was playing with Finbar, for many years prior to the formation of the Fureys & Davey Arthur – but they’re still able to perform a super show. Renowned for their hit songs “I Will Love You’, “When You Were Sweet 16”, “The Green Fields of France”,”The Old Man”,”Red Rose Café”, “From Clare to Here” “Her Father Didn’t Like Me Anyway”, “Leaving Nancy”, “Steal Away” and many more, The Fureys make a
welcome return to The Capitol. The band was formed in 1978 by accident. George, Paul and Davey were playing in Denmark, with their own band called the Buskers, and Eddie and Finbar, while touring in Germany, were involved in a road accident. When George and Paul got news of the accident, they immediately travelled to Germany to be with their brothers. They then decided that they should all be playing together and this was the start of The Fureys. Inevitably, changes have occurred over the years. Their brother Paul died suddenly in June 2002 and Finbar left the band in December 1996, however George and Eddie have continued to delight audiences on their tours and have just released a new CD “The Times They Are A Changing”.
The oldest of the brothers, Eddie, left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival, where he met and shared accommodation in Edinburgh with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell, now all famous in their own right. In 1969 he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, throughout the USA and Canada. Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics) has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on guitar when they met up in the North East of England, while Dave was still a teenager. Join them for a fantastic evening of heartwarming songs which will stir up tears and laughter, sadness and joy

Matt Cardle ‘Intimate & Live’ Tour 2016 Multi-Platinum selling winner of The X Factor, West End star and master singer/songwriter embarks on extensive UK tour this summer June 2016 sees winner of The X Factor and Brit Award nominee, Matt Cardle, launch his sensational UK-wide tour: ‘Intimate & Live’. Matt Cardle adds an extra dimension to the term ‘household name’. As the resounding winner of The X Factor’s highest rating series, his breathtaking fouroctave vocal range stunned millions of people in homes across the UK. Having since sold over 2 million records in the UK and seen all three of his albums reach the top 10, Matt could easily have been content with the achievements of a lifetime. But since his spectacular introduction to the UK charts in 2010, he has tirelessly sought out new and impressive avenues through which to exercise his vocal and song-writing talent. In addition to his acclaimed output as a solo artist, Matt has also shown a keen intuition for collaboration: from his top 10 hit ‘Loving You’ with pop royalty
Melanie C, to his more recent live performances with double MOBO award winning Saxophonist YolanDa Brown. Perhaps the most unique among his recent achievements is his 2015 award for ‘Best West End Debut’, won for his showstopping stage perfor-
mance alongside Beverly Knight, in the acclaimed West End production, Memphis. As this impressive inventory suggests, one of the key factors of Matt’s enduring appeal is his remarkable versatility, and the ‘Intimate & Live’ Tour has been specially devised to showcase this rare musical and creative dexterity. The clue to the tour’s character is in its name. With these 16 dates, Matt will give audiences an intimate and exclusive insight into the various aspects and inspirations of his musical life. A powerful performer who commanded a crowd of 2 billion in Bali, back in 2013, on this tour Matt will sing for closer, cosier crowds, but with no less passion and intensity. Alongside hits from his previous albums and some personally selected covers, Matt will also be previewing some of the outstanding new material from his forthcoming studio album, ‘Higher Power’ for the first time. Matt will be appearing at The Capitol Theatre on the 19th June.

Own and live in a piece of true English history…
Nestled at the foot of the South Downs National Park, The Great Barn was originally built to serve the bishops of Chichester who made a home in the neighbouring Amberley Castle when it fell into Crown ownership after the Reformation. ‘Built in two phases in the seventeenth century, the barn consisted of nine bays with two cart entrances and an aisle to the south. Further additions in the nineteenth century included pigpens and calf sheds and reflected the prosperity of the tenant farmer when under the control of the Arundel Estate. Inside the north end of the barn is a well (long since capped), which was in use up to the 1930s to pump water to the castle.
Basil Strudwick, the last farmer, remembers with affection the old Sussex waggons creaking in from the harvest fields laden with corn sheaves. The waggons would draw into the great barn, where the sheaves were offloaded and stored until threshing time, when the threshing machine would be manoeuvred into the porch.’ Source: West Sussex Barns and Farm Buildings (Dovecote Press 2002) Believed to be one of the largest barn conversions of its kind, the property was lovingly restored by its current owner over a 14 month period. Now fully restored the property offers extremely generous and versatile accommodation. You enter this stunning property via a spacious entrance/
dining hall. There are three bedrooms located at the end of the barn, all with en-suite facilities and a family bathroom. You have plenty of living space with a games room, study and generous sitting room with large open fireplace. This sitting room enjoys simply stunning views over the Amberley Wildbrooks nature reserve. For entertaining, leading off from the dining hall there is an incredibly spacious kitchen/breakfast room with a vaulted ceiling and doors leading to the garden. To the first floor are three substantial double bedrooms offering various views over the glorious countryside and the Castle. Each of the bedrooms has its own en-suite facilities and are accessed via two glorious gal-
leried landings. The property is approached via a shared driveway used by neighbouring properties including the famous Amberley Castle, which has been used by Royalty, politicians and celebrities during its vast and varied history, and is a beautiful local historic landmark. Within the grounds of the barn there is plenty of parking and a timber framed double car port with garage and built in store room. Directly adjacent to the castle there are two converted cart sheds providing additional guest or potentially holiday cottage accommodation as two separate dwellings, each with a sitting room, bathroom and double bedroom. The grounds are landscaped with large areas of lawn, a patio seating area next to the feature walled garden and stunning panoramic views over the South Downs, the Castle and nature reserve. An opportunity to acquire one of the largest barn conversions within Sussex is a real once-ina-lifetime opportunity. Steeped in local history, the property commands fantastic views of not only the castle but also the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park and Amberley Wildbrooks nature reserve. This really is rural living at its finest and with this in mind, early inspection of this highly desirable property in such a spectacular and unique location is thoroughly recommended. Call Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents Storrington office on 01903 742354 or email enquiries@ guyleonard.co.uk for full details & to book your viewing.

Hawks girls shine in National Finals India Belfield, Ellie Hutchinson & Millie Lee-Clayton
Youth Basketball Dave Clayton - Horsham Hawks Millie Lea-Clayton (Tanbridge House), Ellie Hutchinson and India Belfield (both Millais) who play for the U16 Sevenoaks Suns are officially National Champions. After finishing second in the Southern Conference to Bristol the top four teams from the Northern and Southern Conferences compete against each other in a seeded knock out competition for the National Title. The Suns began with a quarter final home draw against Stockport which they won 64-37 before setting up a semi-final against the Northern Conference Champions in Lancashire. In a hard
fought game it was the Suns who secured a narrow 41-38 victory setting up a finals date and a chance to compete for the National Championship. The finals were held in Manchester where the Suns faced the Southern Conference champions Bristol for the third time this season with the series tied at one win apiece. In a packed Amaechi Basketball Centre it was Bristol who took the first lead edging ahead 5-4 before the Suns began to take control of the game to lead 13-8 after one quarter. The Suns continued to build on their advantage outscoring Bristol by 9 points in the second quarter, extending their lead to 32-
18 at the half. A 16-12 Bristol run in the third quarter began to eat into the Suns lead before a strong finish sealed the victory and U16 Girls National Championship for the Suns, 60-42. As well as winning the National title, Millie Lea-Clayton was named finals MVP with a game high 18 points. The U18 Sevenoaks Suns also reached the National Final with a convincing 72-50 semi-final victory over Sheffield to face Peckham Pride. Both U18 games featured four Horsham Hawks with LeaClayton and Hutchinson playing up an age category joining Danni Lozzi and Haylee Miller (both Collyers). The Suns commanded much of the game but it was Peckham who clawed back a seven point deficit late in the game to send the contest into overtime. In a nail biting finish Peckham just edged out the Suns 48-46 to take the U18 crown. All five Hawks girls playing in this year’s National Finals began playing basketball at a local level for the Horsham Hawks while in primary school. Horsham Hawks Representative Graham O’Dell commented, “It is wonderful to see so many Hawks players competing at the highest level at the National Finals and is testament to all of the hard work, dedication and passion for the sport they have shown over the years. As a club we are very proud of them.”

Cottesmore continues to support St Catherine’s Hospice Cottesmore Veterans Golf Society contested the Jim Richardson Memorial Trophy which is a competition started by Jim Richardson 30 years ago, following the death of his wife. Jim proposed the introduction of a St.Catherine’s Hospice Charity Fixture, an annual fund-raising event with a contributory entry fee. Following his own death in 1988, the trophy was given its present name. All proceeds are donated to the Hospice. The competition is a St Andrews Greensome stableford pairs format,
Busy Joggers in the medals A very busy time of late for Horsham Joggers with some fantastic results started with the Sussex Marathon weekend, a series of 3 races totalling the full marathon distance. Harry Wilcox, Tom Walmesley, Carol Anne Davies Jones, Paul Yokom, Ali Gormely, James Munden, Steve Keary, Ian Wilcox, Neil Jennings, Gemma Berrill and Claire Burrows all completed the 3 races with Carol Anne, Gemma and Ali scooping the 1st ladies team prize. Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC A trio of games this week saw Pulborough Bowls Club on good early form with the first fixture being a friendly against the Worthing Grasshoppers. 5 triples played in chilly conditions and the top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Ivan Salmon, with lead, Joyce Woods and number 2, Malcolm Gray, 17/12. The Grasshoppers took a close victory, 88/74 after 18 ends. In hot weekend sun Pulborough hosted Billingshurst in a local
Derby and by half way Pulborough were 12 shots down. After tea the scores began to reverse, Paul Day, with number 1, Mike Richards and number 2, Mark Lancaster, fought back from 4/14 down, to finish 21/17 and take joint top rink with Alan Jordan, Adey Stratton and Clare Stevens on 20/14. The final result was 85/74 to Pulborough. Henfield hosted Pulborough under continuing blue skies where 4 rinks played 21 ends of quality bowls, with Pulborough just having the edge at halftime. The results were split, with both teams win-
ning 2 rinks each. Captain, Paul Day and team, were ahead from the second end, after scoring a 5 to take them 4 shots in front of their opposition, finishing 21/15. Skip, John Brown, with lead, Melvin Green, number 2 Joyce Woods and number 3, Clare Stevens, took top rink for Pulborough after only allowing their opponents to score on 8/21 ends, keeping them in single figures until end 16, when they allowed just 2 more points, taking their final score to 24/10. The overall score was a second win to Pulborough, 77/62.

Sport Horsham Ladies give East Grinstead a scare Horsham’s rising star Georgina Humphreys
Louisa Denman scored in Horsham’s narrow defeat
Photo by Nick Evans Saturday May 7 – Sussex Knockout Cup Final East Grinstead 3 - 2 Horsham Ladies Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter At the end of a great season for Horsham Hockey Club the ladies were shaded in the Sussex Cup Final, but gave an excellent account of themselves, pressing and worrying higher league East Grinstead right to dying seconds of the match. Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “East Grinstead led 2-0 at half time and then scored again but the girls kept
battling and in the last ten minutes we earned five short corners before Shiv Isaacs scored in open play from an aerial reverse stick strike. Then Louisa Denman netted a deflection from their keeper and we had a chance to equalise in the last seconds from another short corner but didn’t quite pull it off.” Club Chairman Nick Evans added: “To come back from three down against east Grinstead was a major achievement and we definitely finished the stronger of the two teams, despite being out of training. We just ran out of time to draw level, but it was great to see some of the youngsters playing and doing so well - Georgina Humphreys,
Jemma Murphy and Rebecca Williams. With these girls plus the Malzer twins and others coming through, the future certainly looks bright for our ladies’ team. The men have had an outstanding season, which is the result of a lot of hard work and commitment by Dom Male, Duncan Howarth and the whole squad. Next year will be tough, of that there is no doubt, but they will now have a well earned rest and come back in August ready to face the challenge. I am confident that they will compete well at the highest level our men’s 1s will ever have played and I am excited by the prospect, especially with the junior sides also doing well.”
Roffey clinch nail-biter in season’s opener Billingshurst humbled Saturday May 7 - Sussex Premier League Cuckfield 143 All Out (57.2 overs) Roffey 144-7 (45.1 overs) Roffey won by 3 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In a hard fought low scoring game Cuckfield were on the ropes, but they recovered to post a tricky challenge on a demanding wicket, posing Roffey serious difficulty before victory was achieved. George Fleming picked up the all important wicket of 24 year old Aussie Jordan Silk, who has a total of 70 first class and top one day games under his belt. From 49-1 Cuckfield staggered to 98-7 until an eighth wicket stand took them to semi-respectability. Roffey used just three bowlers Luke Barnard
taking two wickets on his comeback and Leigh Harrison one, but, once again it was George Fleming who grabbed the bowling honours with 7-69 off 28.2 consecutive overs. In reply four of the first five batsmen made double figures but Roffey slumped from 103-3 to 120-7, Norman Wisdom’s grandson Greg snatching three cheap wickets. But in a tense, jittery finish Dan Smith and George Fleming saw Roffey across the line for a prized 30 point win. A relieved Fleming said: “That was a tough one to win! The wicket was difficult, crusty on top and it was doing everything – but our long batting line up got us through in the end.” Tomorrow (Saturday) in their first home league fixture of the season Roffey welcome Hastings, who thrashed newly promoted Worthing last week.

Junior Football Round Up Chesworth Rovers 1 - 1 Cranleigh Youth (Cranleigh Youth won 3-1 on penalties) The under15 Horsham and District Youth Football League title was decided on penalties after Chesworth Rovers and Cranleigh Youth fought out their third 1-1 draw of the, with Cranleigh eventually emerging victorious. Chesworth had the better of the goalless first half but couldn’t convert their pressure into a goal, while Cranleigh were fast and dangerous on the break. The Surrey side came out stronger after the break and after 10 minutes into the second period their top scorer Lucas Watkins fired past Matt Eades in the Chesworth goal. With nine minutes left a corner dropped nicely into the six-yard box for Archie Talbot to swipe in the equaliser. Both teams had chances to grab a late winner, but, with no extra time, the result and the title hinged on a penalty shoot-out. Cranleigh scored their first three spotkicks and Chesworth could only net one of four and so Cranleigh were crowned champions for the first time; a cruel end to a season for the previously unbeaten Rovers. Lewes Bridge View U13 Girls 1 – 8 Horsham Sparrows U13 Girls Horsham Sparrows Girls secured a comfortable away win, running out 8-1 winners. Four goals for Jess N, a brace from Isabelle V and one each for Ash
B & Holly S capped a dominant display. The team will be aiming for a top three finish as they head into their final game against Mile Oak. Eastbourne Borough U14 Girls 2 – 2 Horsham Sparrows U14 Girls Sparrows gained a wellearned point in their final game of the season despite missing a few players. Eastbourne took the lead half-way through the first half and a second goal followed shortly after but Sparrows got back into the game when Charley scored after a period of pressure and they pressed for the equalizer which came 2 minutes into the second half through an Ella T penalty. Captain Emily won girl of the game. Invitational Cup Horsham Sparrows FC and Horsham YMCA teamed up to host the inaugural Invitational Cup at Gorings Mead. There were 9 games played in all with teams from Horsham Sparrows, Ashington Cougars, Roffey Robins, Heron Olympic, Greenway and Southwater completing for 3 cups, one per age group for U14s, U15s and U16s. The cup day was designed to provide a unique experience for the players and provide all the excitement of playing on a good quality pitch in front of a large crowd. All the games were played in an excellent spirit and Horsham Sparrows ran out winners of the U14 and U16 cups with Heron Olympic taking the honours for the U15s.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Bexhill won the toss and recovered from early setbacks to post a very demanding early season total that proved far too difficult for Billingshurst to overtake. The visitors were indebted to a 197 run stand between wicket keeper Luke Youngs (119) and 84 from Callum Guest, enabling a declaration giving them four extra overs to bowl out Billingshurst. Former skipper Ben Williams was the most successful bowler with two wickets. Billingshurst put on an opening stand of 40 and reached 99-2, but although six batsmen made double figures nobody managed to stay long enough to mount a serious challenge or stave off defeat, Sam Roberts running through the lower order with 5-13 in double quick time. Ben Williams told the District Post: “Our Chairman Jim Burroughs has worked really hard on the wicket and it played very well but our batting line up is a bit depleted at the moment. We’ve got players due to come back and we’re all hoping that Danny (Dhanushka Mitipoaarchchi), our star Sri Lankan all rounder, will be able to resolve the current impasse over his visa and rejoin us soon.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Hurst visit Worthing, who were annihilated by Hastings & St Leonards Priory last Saturday.

Sunday May 8 - England & Wales CB National Club Championship Horsham 263-7 (45 overs) Roffey 268 -5 (42.2 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the previous day at Roffey a match produced 532 runs, which, with the hard, fast outfield, emphasised that a substantial target would be needed.
Horsham won the toss and openers Craig Gallagher, fresh from two undefeated 70s, and Joe Ludlow, also in prime form, rattled up 31 off the first four overs until Rohit Jagota promptly took a wicket. Roffey then clawed things back to 98-2 at the half way stage of Horsham’s innings and although Will Beer (62) and Michael Thornely – who finished on 83 not out – were batting well they never quite managed to cut loose. Four Horsham batsmen posted twenties but, given
the short boundaries either side of the wicket, 263 was a useful but not killer score. Luke Barnard with 3-47, including two Matt Davies’ stumpings, was Roffey’s main wicket-taker, Jagota, George Fleming, and Alex Collins sharing the remaining spoils. Roffey set off positively, opener Theo Rivers going on to top score with 76, but the sizeable crowd needed to know how much of a threat would be posed by Will Beer and Michael Munday. They both necessitated watchfulness and shared four wickets for 58 runs in their 18 overs, Munday being especially frugal, and, although on 184-5 Roffey still had much to do, the other six bowlers used were unable to stem the flow of runs. Jagota (68) and Davies (38) – both undefeated – brought Roffey victory with 16 balls to spare, Davies telling the District Post: “We bowled and chased well. Barney was the pick of our bowlers, bogging them down in mid innings - I felt that Horsham were about 20 short.” Michael Munday added: “We had a defendable score but in the favourable conditions the margin for error was very small. We needed to get Rohit out!” Again, Roffey are the only Sussex team left in the competition and in the next round - on Sunday May 29 - they host Reigate.
now attacking in waves and Horsham were holding on with Mike Watts just preventing Ryan Morlen from increasing his sides lead. Watts relieved the pressure with a long drop out and from this position Andy Gray made a powerful break which was taken on by Kyle Fairs for Johnson to score and convert his own try. Hove came back, and from a line out Sam Whiting scored a good try which was converted by Phil Dugard. Then against the run of play Watts stole the ball and raced 30 yards up the wing to pass to Thompson who run in under the posts for his seventeenth try of the season. Johnson added the extras to level the scores at 12-12; a score that remained until the break. As with the first half Hove started the second period very well and after a short period of pressure Dugard slotted a penalty when Horsham were penalised for wheeling the scrum, and then after a poor clearance kick they spun the ball wide and scored through Luke Torres for a 20 – 12 lead. Horsham then started to unleash the power and depth of their bench to which Hove had no match and Liam Brady with his tackling and Matt Stone with his footballing skills and mobility made an immediate impression. 60th successive game across more than two seasons, made a big tackle and after some good build up play Mills burst through a gap to score which Johnson converted. Soon after the restart Horsham scored what was possibly their try of the season by going the length of the field. Johnson threw out a long pass to Stone on their own try line who gathered a head of steam to take the ball up to the half way line and draw his man perfectly and pass to Declan Nwachukwu who scored a stunning try from 40 yards out. Johnson converted from under the posts and after a fourteen point turnaround in six minutes Horsham lead 26-20 that they saw out to the final whistle. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker reflected after the game, “We were below par and didn’t click so we are happy to get the win. We gave them a head start and they had their tails up, but we became more dominant upfront in the scrums and line outs as the game went on. I am very proud of the guys”. Horsham: Watts; Bell J (Crook), Ordidge (Carvell), Bell W, Nwachukwu; Johnson T, Mills; Talbot, Fisher (Stone), Fairs (Brady); Harcus, Whiting (Clarkson); Smith, Thompson, Gray.
Munday on Saturday bewilders Brighton Saturday May 7 - Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 135 All Out (39.1 overs) Horsham 138-2 (24.2 overs) Horsham won by 8 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Brighton won the toss, quickly passing 60 without loss, but after reaching 101-2 they collapsed to 115-7, enabling Horsham to win at a canter. Joe Ludlow moving the ball from the town end made a crucial break through, bowling Sussex’s Philip Salt after Will Beer (2-31) had removed opener Henry Hunt. Enter Michael Munday, against whom Brighton had not the remotest clue. He took 6-10 off 55 balls, straight deliveries producing LBWs - and googlies, played with cross-bats, rattling the stumps. Jofra Archer picked up the remaining wicket, 23 extras saving Brighton from total ignominy. Craig Gallagher opened Horsham’s batting with Ludlow and they clearly intended to finish the game with the minimum of delay. Ludlow was
run out by a direct hit but that brought no relief to Brighton as Will Beer and Gallagher attacked with gusto. Beer was caught in the deep for 36 with just six runs needed for victory, but, with 8 fours and 6 sixes Gallagher was unbeaten on 76 from 61 balls – his second 70 of the season. The game finished shortly after 5pm, Horsham skipper James Johnson telling the District Post: “I didn’t expect it to be so easy after they got off to such a good start – I knew we had to stay patient and they had no answer to Michael.” Craig Gallagher said: “It was great to have a good work out ahead of our important cup game against Roffey tomorrow.” And, Michael Munday added: “Salt can be devastating but once we’d dismissed him and the other opener they didn’t put up too much of a fight although it wasn’t turning much.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham travel to serial league winners Preston Nomads who opened their Premier League programme with a high scoring defeat at title hopefuls East Grinstead.
