A24 death stabbing could have been avoided, say family phil dennett News Editor
The family of a man stabbed savagely to death on the A24 by a paranoid schizophrenic believe he might never have crossed paths with his killer if mental health experts had done their jobs better. The NHS trust involved admitted this week failures in its care of severely mentally ill Matthew Daley. The 35-year-old stabbed retired solicitor Don Lock 39 times after a minor, low-speed crash between their vehicles. Horrified witnesses described it as a frenzied attack. Daley is now awaiting sentence on July 8 after a jury at Lewes Crown Court found him guilty on Monday of the manslaughter of 79-year-old Mr Lock. After the trial Colm Donaghy, chief executive of the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, admitted failings in the care of Daley, while also indicating it was uncertain whether or not they would have led to the tragedy. Mr Donaghy said in a statement seen by millions of television viewers: “We didn’t give Matthew the right care. What I can’t say is that that would have had an impact on the outcome.” But Mr Lock’s grieving fam-
ily insisted if Daley’s treatment had been different he would not have killed Mr Lock, who had only just been given the all-clear from cancer. Referring to the Trust’s role, Mr Lock’s son Andrew said in a statement after the conclusion of the court hearing: “It is clearly clear that dad would still be here today if they had done their job properly. Nothing we say or do now will bring dad back to us. “But we will continue the spirit that dad carried with him Mr Lock was attacked soon after leaving his cycling club meeting at Washington at about 8.40pm on July 16 last year, driving home to Worthing in his Toyota Auris, following Daley in his Ford Fusion. Outside Rogers Farm on the A24 at Findon, Daley braked and Mr Lock collided with the back of his car at about 20mph.The crash was a minor bump causing only slight damage to each car. Both men got out of their cars but Daley was armed with a knife and stabbed Mr Lock to death. Next day at Hill Barn Golf Course Daley was arrested. He had with him a rucksack containing the knife. During his interview he told detectives where he had parked his car at the stables and where he had hidden his wellington boots in Pot Lane and his underpants in Water

Killer Matthew Daley Lane. Daley was charged with murder and his trial at Lewes Crown Court started on May 3. Daley, of St Elmo Road, Worthing, admitted killing Mr Lock but claimed it was in self-defence and there was evidence about his mental state during the trial. The jury heard Daley had suffered with mental health problems for many years and although he believed he

saw Mr Lock looking angry in his car this was part of his delusion. Witnesses describe Mr Lock as being very calm and Daley carrying out a frenzied attack. Mr Lock died at the scene from his injuries. Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz, who led the investigation for Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “This is a tragic case for all those involved. “I would I’d like a pay tribute to

Steyning minerals dropsession on Monday Residents can attend a public exhibition in Steyning on Monday about West Sussex’s draft Joint Minerals Local Plan. Ham Farm near Steyning is one of the proposed sites and this has raised concern among some residents. West Sussex County Council has organised the public drop-in session at the Steyning Centre, Coombe Court, Fletcher’s Croft, Steyning on May 23. The exhibition will run from 3-8pm. Residents can ask questions and raise concerns face to face with county council officers during the session. The draft plan sets out a vision for how minerals will be produced, supplied and transported in West Sussex until 2033. West Sussex County Council and the South Downs National Park Authority prepared the plan together. Under the proposals, two sites have been allocated to help meet the need for minerals in West Sussex. These are Ham Farm, near Steyning, which has soft sand, and an extension to West Hoathly Brickworks, West Hoathly, which has brick clay. Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert has written to West Sussex County Council to ask them to extend the consultation period beyond 17 June to give the local community time to
prepare an informed response to proposals. Residents in Steyning have raised concerns about the inclusion of Ham Farm in the draft Plan for the quarrying of soft sand. Ham Farm and West Hoathly brickworks are the only two sites that now remain in the Plan, after consideration of almost 50 sites at the start of the process. The MP advised in his letter to the council that a number of residents in Steyning have written to him with concerns that they do not have enough time to be able to consider the detail for the inclusion of Ham Farm. The draft Plan runs to 143 pages, and there are further supporting documents that give a deeper level of detail to explain the site selections. West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for Highways and Transport John O’Brien, said: “We want to make sure we understand the potential impact of our proposals on the local community.“That’s why we’ve organised this drop-in event – so the public can come along and talk to officers.“Please join us and meet our officers. We want to listen and also to explain the plan in greater detail.” The public consultation about the draft plan is due to run until June 17.

Aiming high as record is set Student speakers Megan Longdon and Molly Moss
Students and parents set a record attendance at sessions about higher education. A total of 481 attended two information evenings at Collyer’s college in Horsham that emphasised the importance of preparation and research when choosing where to study next. There were presentations by expert guest speakers from Brighton, Chichester and Sussex universities. Current 2nd year Collyer’s students Megan Longdon and Molly Moss, who have been through the UCAS application and interview process in preparation for starting their degrees in September, also contributed. Megan said: “It was a great opportunity to help the first year students through the process”. Senior Tutor Ian McAlister said: “This was one of many events helping students to navigate the important question of what to do after Collyer’s. As the majority of our students will progress to Higher Education after complet-
ing their studies at Collyer’s, it was extremely relevant.” Having just returned from college trips to the convention at the University of Surrey, and the Oxbridge Conference at Epsom Downs Race Course, many students and parents were keen to understand how applying to university works. Fay Lofty from Brighton University spoke about presenting competitive personal statements, while Charlene Alloway and Fran Taylor from Chichester University explained the nuances of personal finance, budget planning and government loans and grants. Rachel Smyrk, from The University of Sussex gave an insight in student university life. Collyer’s Vice Principal Steve Nicholls said: “I’m delighted that we enjoyed a record attendance of nearly 500 for these presentations and I’m positive that it will help our students as they plan their UCAS applications later in the summer term.”

Magnificent seven earn bonus from café crowd
The Tree Surgery Experts
One turned into a magnificent seven when Kate Coppock slept out rough for charity. Caring Kate is a mentor for the YMCA DownsLink Group’s and also works with residents to improve their cooking skills. When she joined the YMCA Sleep Easy Sleepout for the charity she invited friends from the Partridge Green area to either sponsor her or join her, and six stepped up. The event, held in three town including Horsham, raised a total of £20,100 which will be used to support YMCA projects in Horsham Brighton and Guildford. Now the effort has attracted a
bonus for the YMCA. The friends are regular customers of the Partridge Green Village Café, which meets once a month in the village’s Methodist Church and is run by volunteers from St Michael’s Church and the Weald Community Church in Cowfold. Customers raised £150 towards the YMCA sleepout funds. Café committee member Rowena Murray said: “The cafe provides a place for all ages to meet and where anyone can afford to come. We ask for donations so people can give as much or as little as they like. All profits are given away and
to date we have given over £2000 to a range of local organisations. “We have come to know Kate and her friends through the cafe and were in awe of their decision to sleep rough on a cold night. This donation is in recognition of their dedication and because the cause is such a great one. “ Kate said: “I couldn’t have been more surprised when so many said they would sleep out too. “ Pictured are from left to right: Rowena Murray, Pip Evan-Cook, Claire Phillips, Sarah Dack, Kate Coppock, Jo Beck, Amanda Holmes-Palmer and June Fitton.

Horsham’s Neil Boniface wins the 10k race again Running Martin Read - Sports Reporter In perfect conditions Horsham’s Neil Boniface led home a strong field in Horsham’s 10km race, starting and finishing at Horsham Rugby Club. Third time winner Neil completed in 34 minutes four seconds, saying: “Not my fastest time - I’m a bit tired after running in the 5 km County Championship at Hove yesterday! But I always like to do this race, its local.” Sue Fry of Hailsham was the fastest lady in 38.50, telling the District Post: “My fourth run here, I won it for the ladies two
years ago. It was so hot last year but today there was a refreshing breeze.” The outstanding multi-terrain course has two laps, mainly on quiet open roads, including country lanes and a woodland bridleway stretch. Ahead of the main event there was a 1200 metre run around the rugby pitch for under 16 year olds, won by Nathan Buckeridge (13) one of the contingent from Haywards Heath Harriers, setting the standard for mum Katherine, about to run in her third Horsham 10K. The first girl in the junior race was 12 year old Isobel Russell, also from Haywards Heath who said: “I
did it last year – it’s not too bad!” Paul Aylett, Race Director again,

bourne. This year for the first time we had to disappoint latecomers. We’ve got over 100 people here organising – about 70 marshals and a large group from Horsham Lions dealing with administration.” John Parish of the Lions added: “I hate turning people away but 500 runners is our limit. We had 23 spaces left on the day but they all went in 15 minutes, it’s such a popular event.” The on course marshals were backed up with counterparts at the rugby ground, like Ian Wilcox who ran the all important water station. Every runner received a race memento, with prizes awarded in the various categories, and all were chip-timed. For the first time there were balloon carrying pacemakers for those looking to run in a specific time. Emma Catlow - whose husband Mike was marshalling this year, taking a breather from running - has already completed
several half marathons this season and is in training for Iron Man events, explaining: “My balloon displays number 55 so any competitor wanting to finish in 55 minutes can just follow me!” Emma smiled her way round the course shepherding her followers to the finish in almost exactly the designated time, confirming: “I love this race – it’s so friendly!” Race profits are donated to Horsham Joggers and Horsham Lions Club nominated charities. Fun runners included two brothers from Horsham Football club – Doctor Neil Clarke and Dave Clarke both achieved PBs, Neil saying: “I’ve been running for a couple of years and I’m getting quicker!” while Dave, proudly wearing his HFC shirt, summed up: “Neil got me running – the last two hills were a bit tough, but this is a lovely event!”

Henfield’s planning set for 2030 A plan backed by villagers will help control development in Henfield for the next 14 years. Horsham District Council has made the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan part of the district’s future development Plan. It sets out guidance for future developments in determining planning applications around the village until 2030. The adoption follows a local referendum last month when 1533 residents, 36.39% of the population, turned out to vote in what was only the second referendum of its kind held in Horsham district. At Henfield 94.5% voted in favour of adopting it. Preparation for the Henfield plan started three years ago, and included extensive consultation with people who live in, work in and visit the village. Groups of local residents were established to review and agree which issues should be addressed by the Neighbourhood Plan. There have been focus groups, community surveys and ‘open days’ to gather the fullest view of local community concerns, wishes
and needs from the Plan. The Henfield Neighbourhood Plan states: “ The Plan seeks to preserve and improve the vibrant village centre as well as the rural nature of the Parish: its fields, hedges and woods; the glorious views to the South Downs from our many Parish footpaths and bridleways; and the wildlife we are so fortunate to be able to see and enjoy. But the Plan is also positive about the future and reflects how you think we need to attract younger families into the Parish and to give older residents opportunities to remain living locally by downsizing. The Plan therefore proposes small developments spread throughout the Parish, primarily of modest-sized houses. We believe that the Plan addresses all of the key issues expected to face Henfield in the next 20 years.” Ray Osgood, Chairman of the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, said that he and his colleagues were delighted that so many of the residents of Henfield and Small Dole felt able to support the Plan at referendum.

The book has been given an award for the best local history title submitted to CILIP, the UK’s Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Largely compiled by volunteers, the book was the culmination of an extensive two-year Heritage Lottery funded project led by West Sussex County Council’s Library Service in partnership with West Sussex Record Office. The book won the CILIP Alan Ball Local History Award and was published in August 2014 by the History Press, in association with West Sussex County Council. Terry Bracher, chairman of CILIP’s Local Studies Group, said: “The judges were unanimous in their praise for the book, especially the quality and breadth of research, the topics it covered and the fact that it was created with the input
of so many volunteers. Congratulations to you all.” Professor Gary Sheffield, a leading Great War academic and author, said: “This book is a significant piece in the mosaic which, when combined with the various other local histories, will give us a more balanced understanding of the British experience of the First World War. Great War Britain - West Sussex is a fine achievement and could stand as a model for collaborative local histories of this type. I congratulate everyone involved in it, and commend it warmly to a wide readership.” Much of the initial research work was undertaken by 150 volunteers who listed over 10,000 events from local newspapers and created over 100 case studies of servicemen and Home Front topics. A team of authors produced chapters on: Agriculture and Food, Billeting & Military Installations, Churches, Home Front, Hospitals & Convalescent Homes, Invasion Counter Measures, Local Economy and Morale, Mobilisation & Recruitment, Those Left Behind & Those Who Returned, Royal Sussex Regiment, War Me-
morials & Peace, and Women. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “It was wonderful to see the project come to fruition with this book. It is a genuine community project, which has drawn on the wealth of information brought to light by a committed team of volunteers and the specialist expertise of a dozen authors. We are proud in West Sussex to play our part in acknowledging the debt we owe to the generation of 1914-18.” A few remaining copies of the book are available to order through all public libraries in West Sussex and at West Sussex Record Office in Chichester at £10, saving £5 on the recommended retail price of £14.99. Terry Bracher (left) of the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals is pictured presenting the award to Martin Hayes, the county council’s Local Studies Librarian. Also pictured are two reminders of the years of the First World War, from Roffey and The Carfax at Horsham. Carfax poster courtesy of Horsham Museum.

Revamp brings the “Wow!” factor The ribbon cutting
Villagers have a new-look Post Office after its re-opening by an MP. Nick Herbert, who represents Arundel and South Downs, cut the ribbon to open the modernised Post Office and improved convenience store in West Chiltington, which has a population of about 3,500. Mr Herbert joined the community celebration to mark the completion of a modernisation project to improve the Nisa convenience store and its Post Office counter. The Post Office says shop owner Vim Odera has made a substantial
personal investment into the shop alongside a grant from the Post Office Community Fund to make the improvements. West Sussex County Council Chairman Pat Arculus, Horsham District Councillor for West Chiltington John Blackall and West Chiltington Parish Council Chairman Marshall Monks joined the MP at the event. The Post Office is now classed as a Community Post Office, and the grant Mr Odera received for improvements was part of a £20 million national investment pro-

gramme made available to 3,000 branches. Mrs Odera, who is in charge of the Post Office, said: “We definitely have the wow factor now. Customers have said that the Post Office and shop look really good. The shop is more spacious and the building is better designed. The community are pleased that they have retained a Post Office.” Nick Herbert said: “I could see from the number of people coming to the shop and post office what a valuable and popular local service it provides.” Students bridged a gap in their knowledge with some inventive creations. The Year 7 girls at Farlington School in Horsham proudly displayed the results of their bridgebuilding challenge. This project fitted into the topic on “Forces” they have been studying. The teachers gave the girls some different bridge types to think about and discussed various functions, such as crossing a deep valley or a wide, shallow river, carrying heavy traffic or pedestrians. The girls were asked to research at least two different types of bridge before designing and constructing their own. Their bridge had to cross a 30cm span and could be entered into one of three categories; creative design, construction design or strength. The school said pupils were very enthusiastic and worked hard on both the research element and the actual construction, gaining a real sense of achievement from the project. The final designs were very varied with examples of truss, rope, suspension and arch bridges. Many girls chose to construct their bridges out of wood, but more unusual materials included granite, bamboo and papier-mâché. Some of the girls are pictured with their creations.

The missed 43 officially recognised by Horsham Hedgehog Awareness Week Southwater Parish Council took part in Hedgehog Awareness Week this month. Using materials from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) staff made a display in the main foyer of Beeson House and had provided colouring sheets and information for children. Staff were delighted when a hedgehog moved in and, by all accounts, was a model visitor. Organisers were pleased with the attention the display received, and that they now are aware of some thriving hedgehog families in the parish. However, Southwater Parish Council is concerned that hedgehog numbers, in the area, are falling. Earlier this year, in its Parish News letter, Southwater Service men and women from Horsham who gave their lives for their country have been officially recognised during a two-part ceremony in the town. Horsham District Council’s Vice Chairman Cllr Christian Mitchell led a short wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the Carfax to mark the anniversary of VE Day and also officially recognise the plaque of names of Horsham servicemen and women from World War Two which had been missing from the memorial. As part of Armistice Day remembrance commemorations last November there was a special unveiling of 43 names of Horsham servicemen and women who lost their lives in World War Two. The act of unveiling the plaque
in November 2015, in the 70thanniversary of the end of World War Two, was the culmination of over 20 years dedicated research by local historian Gary Cooper. In 1945 the town decided not to add names to the War Memorial, but to have a simple metal plaque saying: “Also in memory of those who gave their lives in Second World War 1939-1945”. The reason for this is still uncertain. In 1992 a list of those servicemen and women who died in World War Two was drawn up and a new stone plaque was added to the memorial wall, which forms a backdrop to the stone obelisk. After more diligent research undertaken by Gary Cooper, the further missing 43 names were added and a new plaque added to the wall. The VE
Day service was an opportunity to pay official recognition. The council and Royal British Legion said they were delighted to be able to recognise their sacrifice. Pictured at the wreathlaying ceremony are Cllr Mitchell and Horsham Royal British Legions’s President Dianne Loates beside the newly installed names. Also present were local historian Gary Cooper, his proof reader Jean McMahon and Horsham Royal British Legion’s Vice Chairman Geoff Carter.
Parish Council publicised the rate of decline in the national hedgehog population. Supporting Hedgehog Awareness Week, and informing residents of how they can help our hedgehogs, is one more way that the council sought to help stop the decline. The Parish Council will be using strimmer stickers from the BHPS on its gardening equipment and will be reminding staff to check before they strim anywhere on Parish land. The Parish Council has also recently planted additional wildlife trees, provided by the Woodland Trust on its land. With so much woodland and hedging, it is hoped that, with the support of their residents, they can work to ensure that hedgehogs have a safe home in Southwater.

Cadets walking on air after special treat
Air Cadets from Horsham enjoyed a special visit the newly-opened Gatwick Aviation Museum. The group took the opportunity to have a private tour of the large selection of aircraft on display, with volunteers guiding and educating the cadets as they walked around. The planes included a Harrier GR3 and Hunter T7. The evening ended with a tour of the well-preserved Avro Shackleton, in which Cadets could sit in the various positions of the flight, including the flight deck. Gatwick Aviation Museum recently reopened after being rebuilt and is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week. Museum Trustee John Tickner said: “We are here to inspire children into a future in aviation,

We have a lot of cadets that are really keen in a career in aviation and the night was a great information evening for them. My thanks go to Gatwick Aviation Museum and their staff for making the evening possible” Anyone aged 13-18 interested in joining the cadets or potential adult volunteers can contact them on 1015@aircadets.org.uk
Storrington Doctor brings relief to 100’s A surgeon from Storrington flew thousands of miles to help ease the pain of hundreds of patients. Suzie Venn travelled with colleagues to introduce a new treatment to Zambia. Urethroplasty is plastic surgery to repair an injury or defect in male urethras and had not been performed before in Zambia. Many men suffer from a stricture, which is an abnormal narrowing of the tube that carries urine out of the body from the bladder. Spending a week at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Mrs Venn and the team taught local surgeons urethroplasty techniques. Mrs Venn said: “The workshop started on Sunday with a visit to the ward to discuss 22 patients with urethral strictures. “The week in theatre started slowly, but we introduced the techniques to the three lead urologists, who it had been decided we would concentrate on training, during the visit.” “The week brought home the reality of the main problems
facing our colleagues, although the country is relatively stable and the team are motivated there are issues affecting the hospital including basic amenities and electrical and water supply failure. All in all, the visit was a success and we have formed strong relationships with the Lusakan Urologists.’ Mrs Venn is a urological surgeon for Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation Trust and the Nuffield Hospital Chichester, and went as part of a UROLINK team, supported by a grant from the Urology Foundation. UROLINK says it will continue to support the urologists in Zambia with remote support for multidisciplinary specialist meetings, a theatre audit and a further trip planned in March 2017. UROLINK, set up by the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) in 1990, is an acronym derived from ‘Urology Overseas Links.’ Mrs Venn said she would like to thank the Nuffield Health Hospital in Chichester for supporting the trip with stricture theatre kit for the team.

Silver Storrington going for gold 2015 charm
The second clean-up for a gold challenge for Storrington in Bloom 2016 is on the way. The first session, for the Queen’s Birthday, was done with lots of local support and enthusiasm and organisers are hoping for a similar reaction to the next one on July 3. The main competition entry is in the Town Centre category of the Britain in Bloom Competition. Last year Storrington was awarded a silver gilt and the group says this year’s aim is to repeat or better that. Judging will be on July 7 and with the help of sponsors, volunteers,
residents and businesses organisers believe success can be achieved.
Here’s to a lovely warm summer with plenty of flowers, fun and laughter for everyone As well as the main entry, there will be a number of local competitions to be judged in late July and August. The theme this year will be
“Bright and beautiful”. Categories include a children’s wheelbarrow competition, allotment, business window and business external area. Entry forms for the residential categories of front garden and community area can be collected from Joanna’s Boutique Tearoom, High Street or from The Village Florist, West Street or from the Storrington in Bloom website storringtoninbloom.co.uk The plants for the main competition are being purchased from The Village Nurseries, West Chiltington, where everything is grown on site. They made up the baskets which were hung on the lampposts last weekend by a volunteer team including officers from the local Fire Station. Planting of the village centre flower beds will be done towards the end of this month, again with more plants from the Village Nursery and the planters will be prepared by local organisation Greenfingers. A spokesperson said: “It is a real team effort from our village. The children of Rydon School are playing an important part at this very moment by designing and painting flags to be hung in the village for the whole of July. It will be a very pretty sight. Yet again volunteer helpers with ladders will be coming to the rescue by hanging the flags. “Here’s to a lovely warm summer with plenty of flowers, fun and laughter for everyone.”
Exhibition highlights stunning ceramics creations
Visitors to an exhibition at Horsham Museum are seeing how talent can transform sticky, soggy, slippery clods of clay into works of art. Some of this region’s greatest living ceramicists create stunning, stylish and sensual examples. At Horsham Museum and Art Gallery’s new temporary craft exhibition Transforming Light and Shadow: Showcasing 21st Century Ceramics, visitors can enjoy how, with the skilled use of design and manipulation of clay and colour, four regional ceramicists have created works that both play with and use elements of light and shadow.
The exhibition runs until July 15. Atkinson-Jones Ceramics, whose work is held by the greatest design museum in the world, The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, uses the magical effects of chemistry to transform dull oxides into iridescent lustres that reflect back amazing colours virtually impossible to achieve through other means. In contrast, John Evans has mastered the ancient pottery skills of Japan to create shadow-like decoration that provides ghostly forms and soft lines to unglazed pots. The exhibition also displays work by Deborah Timperley, who uses textiles to transform clay into
elaborate pure white wall plaques. The detailed folds of the textile and the weft and weave of the cloth create intricate shadows that dance across the white bone china. Her work is complimented by the light work of Ray Mallaney who, instead of converting a vase or pot into a lamp stand, has created perfect light shows with his porcelain lamp stands. Visitors are able to buy works, thanks to an Arts Council inspired scheme, Own Art, offering an interest-free loan for 10 months. Pictured are a work by Ray Mallaney and Smoky Ladies by John Evans.

Jobs club has re-started in Billingshurst A service to help people find jobs re-started this week. The Billingshurst Work Information and Support Hub, called WISH, restarted on Wednesday in Billingshurst Library. Facilitated by Horsham District Counci, managed by Billingshurst Community Partnership and funded by Think Family and Horsham Job Centre Plus, the WISH Job Club has helped more than 30 people from Billingshurst and surrounding areas to find work since it was launched in June 2015. It is a free job club to help unemployed people gain vital employability skills and knowledge that employers are seeking. The club aims to provide friendly and practical advice on how to overcome concerns about finding work and will provide the opportunity to meet fellow job hunters
in a relaxed atmosphere. WISH provides a series of weekly sessions based locally,
helping people with CV writing, applying for jobs and how to create a good impression at job interviews. The Job Club is available to those
who are long term unemployed, returning to work after a career break or have recently been made redundant. The club is another employment project organised and provided by Horsham District Council and is operated in partnership with Billingshurst Community Partnership and Horsham Job Centre Plus. It receives a small amount of funding from the Department of Work and Pensions and the Think Family initiative also fund some of the running costs for this initiative. Charity climbers hit their peaks
A team of adventurers raised more than £5,000 for charity after successfully completing the tough National Three Peaks Challenge. To do so they conquered the three highest summits in England, Scotland and Wales during one weekend. The group, called Team Retribution, included Peter Sutton and Graham Walker from PMW Communications in Billingshurst, Peter’s sons Luke and Christopher and their friend Tommi Hammond. The team was lead by outdoor adventure expert Richard Betts from Sussex based Pied a Terre Adventures and was supported by team cook Tracie Carter, also from PMW Communications, and driver Gary Bishop. With a combined height of 3,407 metres and an estimated walking distance of 27 miles, the National Three Peaks Challenge is one of the toughest tests of stamina and endurance climbers will undertake in the UK and requires participants to climb the peaks of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis con-
secutively. Peter Sutton said: “It was an amazing adventure, which has created some incredible memories for all of us. The team was absolutely oustanding approaching each new summit with unwavering force and positivity. A huge congratulations to all of them for a job extremely well done. “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported the team and helped to raise such a phenomenal amount for charity with special thanks to our key sponsors at PAV i.t. services, Chandlers Building Supplies, The Belfry Centre, Airforce, RGB Building Supplies and Perrys Chartered Accountants for their incredible generosity.” The money raised will be split between the charities Born Free, Sport Relief, Dementia UK, Chestnut Tree House and the Kent Cancer Trust. West Sussex company travels to Texas A Horsham company, who specialises in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is one of 9 UK businesses representing the country’s health and life science industry in Texas this week. G&N Medical (G&N), offers products that prevent DVT and cardiothoracic devices. The company is a market leader amongst NHS England and private hospitals for anti-embolism stockings. G&N will form part of a delegation consisting of innovative medical technology companies. It is the first time a health delegation of this kind has visited the state and is the first trip of an 18-month programme. Organised by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FOC), its trade investment body (UKTI) and the UK’s medical technology industry body, the Association of British Healthcare Industries (ABHI), the select delegation of medical technology pioneers will travel to Austin, San Antonio and Houston. After eight months of planning with medical centres, university hospitals and the United States Armed Forces, the British visitors will meet with Texan hospitals and life sciences organisations. The objective of the visit is to foster new rela-
tionships, to develop and adopt cutting-edge medical technologies in the state. For Texan-based companies, it provides an important opportunity to learn about and engage with the UK’s health system and understand how the market works. Tim Lewis of G&N, said: “We have been working with a collection of hospitals in Dallas for the past six months to introduce our anti-embolism stockings to the US market and we welcomed the chance to open up new markets in the other main cities in Texas. It is recognised that the UK has a world-leading reputation in life sciences. Its £18bn ($26.3) medical technology sector employs over 88,000 people and has changed millions of lives across the globe. Peter Ellingworth, ABHI’s Chief Executive Officer, added: “We are very excited to be strengthening relationships for the medical technology sector between the UK and the state of Texas. G&N are a privately owned medical device company established in the UK in 1974. In 2015, they opened their first US office in New Jersey and are now committed to growing their presence in the largest healthcare market in the world.

Little Monkeys Day Nursery under new ownership
Specialist business property adviser, Christie and Co, is delighted to announce the sale of Little Monkeys Day Nursery in Horsham. The nursery has been acquired by Cranbrook Day Nurseries, a new entrant to the market, which is looking to use this impressive nursery as a platform for further growth. Little Monkeys is a high-profile and renowned childcare setting which boasts an ideal location, right in the centre of the bustling market town, yet within walking distance of Horsham’s beautiful park. The nursery was sold, unusually, on both a freehold and leasehold
basis, with different parts of the building falling under different categories. The property has been extended and converted to create the ideal environment for a first class 100+ place childcare setting. Nick Brown, Director at Christie and Co, who brokered the sale, commented: “This was a unique opportunity which was offered to a highly confidential target list of well financed buyers, which resulted in multiple bids being made from corporate operators, regional operators and new entrants to the market. The competitive tension between interested parties enabled us to achieve a price which the, now former, owner was exceptionally happy with.”

In a new documentary being made with Sussex Flying Club, a former Horsham Collyer’s student will train as a private pilot and be filmed as she progresses through the course. Beth Moran, 20, from Horsham, is to receive training for her Private Pilot Licence (PPL) following a partnership between the Sussex Flying School at Brighton City Airport (at Shoreham) and Sussex based film company, Fact Not Fiction Films. Beth said: “While it’s always something I’ve wanted to try, I never expected that I would learn to fly or that I would even get the chance to. It’s so exciting; I received a trial flight lesson in December as a Christmas gift, took that lesson and absolutely loved it. I’m hoping this film will inspire other people to learn to fly and I’m thrilled to be a part of it”. The new documentary, entitled Learning to Fly, will follow Beth Moran on her journey and will reveal the highs and lows of someone learning a whole new skillset. Tristan Loraine, the documentary director and retired British Airways
Captain said, ‘Flying is a really exciting hobby and can be as real as it gets. There are few things that can compare to the excitement of being a pilot and seeing the world from above. This film will really get inside the head of someone entering the unknown and pushing themselves to learn new skills. Beth will
While it’s always something I’ve wanted to try, I never expected that I would learn to fly or that I would even get the chance to have to deal with new challenges on a daily basis and we will be able to capture what promises to be an exciting journey.’ The course consists of 45 hours of flight training, a minimum requirement set out by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), 9 exams that all demand a 75% pass mark and finally a flying test. All of this
will happen with the Sussex Flying Club, based at Brighton City Airport, which recently featured in the BBC Film ‘The Woman in Gold’ starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds. A spokesperson for Brighton City Airport said, ‘This documentary will be great for showing what goes on at the airport. We have a range of activities here including a leading commercial pilot training school and various businesses but our focus is mainly on business and general aviation. With lots of smaller regional airports closing, we want Brighton City Airport to continue to thrive; we are one of the busiest airports in the UK In terms of movements and we want the airport to remain as an airport, first and foremost’. Beth had her initial Trial lesson in December 2015 and started her training earlier in March this year. There are two types of aircraft generally used by those taking the course, the Cessna 152 and the Piper Warrior. The Cessna is smaller and typically those
learning to fly won’t convert to the Piper until they have obtained their PPL. Beth will be learning in the Piper Warrior. Beth added, ‘The Piper is definitely more powerful but any concerns I had at the start soon disappeared. The instructors are very experienced. I completely trust the aircraft and all its equipment. I would really recommend, to anyone who has considered learning to fly, to have a trial lesson and watch the documentary so they can see if it’s a hobby or career they want to pursue’. The Learning to Fly documentary will be completed later this year and is also being supported by Pooleys Flight Equipment, Garmin, BOSE, Glider FX and Centreline Aviation Medical Services. More information on the film, regular video updates and details on how to learn to fly can be found on the Sussex Flying Club website and social media at: sfc.ac/learning-to-fly/ @BethPilot www.facebook.com/learningtoflyfilm/
Let’s hang on: the music of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Following huge demand after their performance here last year, Let’s Hang On returns to The Capitol with their awardwinning celebration of the legendary Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. It’s easy to frequently name drop the big chart stars of the ‘60s, such as The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys, but as their repertoire proves, The Four Seasons are still held in very high regard, with countless hits and a multitude of songs used in hit films, such as Grease, Dirty Dancing, The Deer Hunter and Jersey Boys. Dino Buttarazzi, Martin Peat, Scott Walker, Jay Harrison and Stephen James (who scales the falsetto heights previously set by Frankie Valli with remarkable ease) truly capture the original
magic of the Four Seasons. The atmosphere created is not only from their music, but also their own unique sound, nostalgic mood, and electric feeling. From the beginning in the early ‘50s, when Frankie first joined the group, the show takes the audience through hits, such as December ’63 (Oh What A Night!), Beggin’, Sherry, Bye Bye Baby, Walk Like A Man, Grease, Rag Doll, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Working My Way Back To You, Big Girls Don’t Cry, and many more, climaxing with a spectacular finale of, of course, Let’s Hang On! Having performed at the Royal Albert Hall for Frankie Valli himself, Let’s Hang On are undoubtedly one of the most authentic touring acts on the circuit and continue to prove they’re in a class of their own.
This award-winning production takes you on a musical journey through the prolific career of one of the most successful bands of all time - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Prepare for an electric atmosphere and don’t be surprised to find yourself on your feet and dancing before the night is over! “An authentic masterpiece” The BBC “These guys are absolutely brilliant” The Paul O Grady Show “You Guys Are Dynamite!” Frankie Valli Performance: May 20 at 7.30pm. VWs are coming to town- win a Campervan break
Entertainment Martin Read - Reporter The vintage VW Show is coming to Horsham on Sunday June 5 – showcasing a rally of classic air-cooled vehicles. There will be a VW cruise driving up from show sponsors VW Heritage in Shoreham on the morning of the show setting off at 8.30am and driving through Henfield and Cowfold.
The surprisingly versatile and spacious campers are terrific fun to drive on leisurely cruise holidays along our country lanes VW Heritage have restored countless Volkswagens and are a renowned source for even the most obscure parts. In addition to the large display of VWs in the Carfax there will be
many more on show in front of the Parkside building in North Street, next to the Black Jug pub. Event organiser Plum Jacobs told the District Post: “This is our first VW show in Horsham and we’re very pleased with the numbers of VWs that have already registered to appear on the day. VW enthusiasts are used to gathering in rural settings and so are absolutely delighted that they’ll have such lovely prime town centre locations for our show. Horsham District Council have given us great support and help with the staging of the event.” Garry Mortimer-Cooke, Horsham’s Town Centre & Events Manager adds: “It will be really great to have the VWs here! Horsham has established itself as
pleasant and successful venue for the growing list of major
events that we host in the town. June 5 is going to be another big day for Horsham – along with the
VW Show we’ll have the first French Market of the year, the Vintage Fair and the Cancer Research Race for Life will be running through the town, so there’ll be something for everybody. The VW Show is a welcome new addition to our calendar of activities and we hope it’ll become an annual event.” Plum and her family are ardent fans of VW Campervans, saying: “We’ve owned them for years, just loving them and our two kids really enjoy them for our holidays!” And, Plum loves sharing her interest by hiring out her stunningly stylish fully reconditioned Campervans with an ever growing community of followers eager to savour the bygone age of flares and flower power. Based in Southwater Plum’s classic retro campers in pastel livery are fully equipped with everything needed – including USB stereo and DVD
players - for up to fours adults and two children and even a well-behaved pooch. The vans are very reliable, but AA coverage is included and expert advice is on hand to ensure that hirers have a really different break, Plum saying: “The surprisingly versatile and spacious campers are terrific fun to drive on leisurely cruise holidays along our country lanes – we’ve got an ideal starting point from which to launch a character-filled holiday with an all too rare taste of freedom! And those attending the show have the opportunity to win a taster two night hire, which could lead to a life-long love affair with Campervans!” On June 5 the iconic vintage VWs from far and wide will be on display from 10.30 until departure at around 15.00. To register a vehicle for inclusion, contact Plum Jacobs – horshamsplumjam@gmail.com - 07766 685862. For further information on Plum’s VW Campervan hire see www. plumcampers.co.uk

MORE TH>N reveals the cost of running an average home The real cost of running the average-sized UK home[1] has been revealed today by leading home insurers MORE TH>N. Owning a three bedroom home in the UK comes with average annual running costs of almost £20,000[2] (£1,634 per month), with rented three bedroom homes only slightly less expensive at just shy of £19,000[3] per year (£1,576 per month). For a household with two working adults each earning the average yearly salary[4] that
means between 43% (rented) and 45% (owned) of post-tax earnings are being spent purely on household bills and the rent or mortgage. The MORE TH>N Cost of Running a Home Report (CORAH) also found significant variation in the costs of running the same sized homes in 72 towns across the UK[5]. Most stretched are households in the highest region of Greater London where 72% of properties cost more than
£1,827.90 per month which contrasted sharply with only 3% of properties in Northern Ireland – the lowest region. These figures reveal that families today either need the head of household to be earning significantly more than the average salary or for both parents to be working just to make ends meet. In the South East the research looked at five different sized properties in Ashford, Basingstoke, Colchester, Eastbourne, Oxford and Worthing. The research revealed that there are challenges at both ends of the property spectrum. Renters living in one or two bedroom flats across the UK paid more for their accommodation and household bills compared to those who had a mortgage – with just a handful of exceptions from the 720 properties analysed. While for adults earning the national average take home pay of £1,827.90 per month, there is no three or four bedroom houses in any region where the cost of the household bills and rent or mortgage was not almost half of their monthly take home pay. There was no town in the South East where the cost of running a one or two bedroom flat was cheaper for renters compared to owners. Across all the sized properties surveyed in the South East the cost of running a home is more than the national average monthly pay for nearly a third of all households (30%).
Compared to other regions, there is very little housing stock in the South East - that was almost no homes – owned or rented, that cost half the national monthly wage – the exceptions are mortgaged one bedroom flats in Ashford, Colchester and Eastbourne. There are no family sized home that cost less than half the national monthly wage to live in and run - the cheapest options are for a three bed semi at £1,710.89 per month when renting in Colchester, against £1,630.31 for the same mortgaged home in Ashford. Graham Nicholls, Head of Home insurance, MORE TH>N; “Our Cost of Running A Home Report shows just how financially stretched most people are to put a roof over their heads and pay their bills. – spending almost half their income before buying other necessities such as food, commuting, petrol or other insurance such as motor. “It confirms the importance of having insurance in place to protect against unexpected bills. Home insurance cover can offer peace of mind and could help save money and it is worth checking to ensure you have the right cover to meet your personal needs. We would also encourage everyone to keep up the maintenance on their home and not be tempted to cut corners as insurers will not cover damage from wear and tear.”

Convincing hat-trick of wins for Pulborough Pulborough have continued their fine start to the season
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Pulborough’s run of success continued with 3 outstanding results both home and away. Midweek saw Pulborough travel to Worthing to play Beach House
Park over 18 ends. 4 triples played, three of which went Pulborough’s way, with a dominant top rink going to skip, Chris Etherington, with lead, Melvin Green and number 2, George Lewis. The first half was all Pulborough, with a 6 on the third end setting the scene for things to
come! By halfway, their opposition had faded, having scored just 2 points to Pulborough’s 20 and the final score was a convincing 27/7 win to Pulborough. The score overall was a 71/53 victory to PBC. Marine Gardens visited Pulborough hoping to continue their winning streak for 2016, but it wasn’t to be. A strong showing by the Pulborough side produced 3 wins out of 4 triples, with a close contest for top rink between 2 experienced skips. Alan Jordan, with Pauline Adsett as lead and Melvin Green as 2, took a 6 on end 10 to double their opposition’s score, finishing 20 points ahead 29/9. Lens Adsett, Mike Richards and Mick Ayling saved their 6 until the penultimate end to secure a 21 point lead and snatch top rink by just 1 point. The final score was 93/52 to Pulborough. The second away game of the week took Pulborough to Littlehampton to face Norfolk. Ivan Salmon and team looked like an easy top rink until they dropped a 7 on end 15, reducing their lead to just 4 points. 7 points in the last 3 ends left them on 26/15. Skip, Alan Jordan, with lead, Mike Richards and number 2, Clare Stevens, kept their noses ahead from end 7, steadily building their lead to 12 points to snatch top rink for Pulborough. With 3 rink wins, PBC finished on 80/62.
Sparrows day ends a fine season
Sam aims at becoming World Champion Taekwondo Dave Smith - Sports Editor Sam Pulfer, a young Taekwondo exponent from Steyning, will be competing at the Taekwondo World Championships in July at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. Sam has been training in Taekwondo since 1997 and has been part of two national teams as well as running the Gemini martial arts team, who he took to win silver with in a competition in 2010. In addition, Sam has recently begun teaching disabled adults kickboxing in a venture called the Firefly Project. Sam is no stranger to competitions and has competed in a variety of disciplines including point sparring, continuous sparring, musical forms, creative forms, knockdown kumite and, most notably, traditional forms. His competition record is impressive and goes back to June 2000, competing in Belgium, France, Portugal, India and Finland, as well as training in USA, Albania, Romania and also doing charity work in Sri Lanka with the army in 2005. As well as taking his team to martial success, Sam has also been involved in many Oriental festivals in London as well as taking part in charity events such as Horsham Rotary’s Elephantastic 2015. More recently, in October Sam and Gemini competed at a ‘100 rounds of sparring’ in Warwickshire, raising over £1480 for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. At the age of 28 and competing in over 70 competitions to date, Sam is now setting his sights on winning the World Championships and bringing honour to his Gemini team.

Horsham Sparrows award winners
Bluecoats have won Squash league
Junior Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham Sparrows Football Club celebrated another season with their annual fun day and awards ceremony. This year, the club can boast 17 squads who all enjoyed a football packed day at Tanbridge House School which was followed by a presentation ceremony that acknowledged the achievements and successes of the players and their
teams. This included the Under 9s who won the league’s sportsmanship award, the Under 11 girls who were league winners, Under 11 boys who won the plate and the Under 14s who were league runners up. The contribution made by player volunteers was also recognised with awards going to members of the Under 15 boys’ team and the Women’s team who help coach the younger teams at the club. Individual awards were presented
to players from each team and the day presented the ideal opportunity to welcome the youngest players to the club.
Anyone interested in joining Horsham Sparrows the Little Kickers, Under 8s and U9s teams are recruiting players. For girls wanting to get involved in football the club will be running a summer training course in June. Visit www.horshamsparrows to find out more.
Squash Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Bluecoats Sports squash 1st team have completed a very successful season with a 5-0 away win against Chichester which has secured them top spot in Division 2 (west). After losing the first game of the season 5-0 to West Worthing it has been a flawless run
ever since, winning their last 11 matches. The team consists solely of Bluecoat club members which makes finishing league champions all the more exceptional. The team will now almost certainly be promoted to the second tier of Sussex squash next season and will be hoping to match the success of this campaign.

Saturday May 14 - Sussex Premier League Hastings & St Leonards Priory 203 All Out (56.5 overs) Roffey 206-9 (52.0 overs) Roffey won by 1 wicket Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey kept their legion of loyal supporters on tenterhooks but pulled off a nervy, pulsating win in their first home league game with six balls left and the last pair at the crease. Hastings elected to bat and, despite losing an early wicket, created a useful platform, suggesting that from 75-2 they would post a challenging target on Roffey’s high scoring ground. Former Sussex second eleven’s Elliot Hooper with
52 and wicket keeper Jake Woolley (49) put on a 91 run stand but progress was slow, Roffey once again starving the opposition of runs mid innings. George Fleming and Luke Barnard bowled a marathon 41.5 over spell in tandem containing Hastings until they were forced to take risks and pay the penalty, reliable catching resulting in their demise. Barnard took 7-78 and Fleming 2-70, the last six wickets falling for 37 runs. With a fast outfield there was general agreement that 203 was insufficient, especially as Roffey had 53 overs to get the runs. Yet, at 20-3 alarm bells rang before Liam Gibson (45) and Rohit Jagota (49) steadied the ship. However, their departure left Roffey needing a further 75 runs with spinner Jed O’Brien, who finished with 5-56, creating problems.
Wickets continued to ebb away and at 190-9 all four results remained possible, but for the second week running George Fleming produced a telling performance, this time with the bat - his unbeaten 23 in partnership with Barnard securing an edgy victory at 7.20 to resounding cheers. Skipper Matt Davies said: “We made it difficult for ourselves but we’ve got two maximum point wins under our belt, so I’m more than happy with that.” Luke Barnard added: “After we dismissed them relatively cheaply George and I were determined not to lose this game!” Fleming summed up with: “We gave our wickets away a bit too easily but I thought if I could stay in then we should win.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Roffey visit Billingshurst who still await their first win of the season.

relegated, Lewes. Other new additions to the league apart from Horsham and Lewes will be Greenwich Borough (promoted from the Southern League East) and Godalming Town and Cray Wanderers
(transferred in). The full division line up will be: Carshalton Town, Chatham Town, Chipstead, Corinthian– Casuals, Cray Wanderers, Greenwich Borough, Guernsey, Hastings

though Aaron Phillips got 52, wickets tumbled and at 127-7 a Horsham victory was a distinct possibility. Overseas signing Jofra Archer took 2-35, David Crowshaw 1-16 and perpetual tormentor Michael Munday tested Nomads with 4-59, but a 26 run unbroken Cricket eighth wicket partnership saw the Martin Read - Sports Reporter hosts across the line. Heavy loss continues Billingshurst’s woes Saturday May 14 - Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 97 All Out (32.2 overs) Worthing 97-5 (26.2 overs) Worthing won by 5 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst targeted this game for a much needed win against newly promoted Worthing (thrashed by Hastings last week), but with a team depleted by attendance at a team mate’s wedding, could only notch up an inadequate total after electing to bat at the Manor Sports Ground. The 39 run opening stand raised hopes and at 71-2 a challenge might have been mounted but four wickets fell for 10 runs, the middle and lower order hav-
ing no answer to Hampshire’s Mason Crane’s 5 for 10, extras top scoring with 25 as the innings closed on 97. When Worthing responded they soon found themselves on 34-3. James Criss took 3-16 but Josh Wood’s 50 enabled Worthing to win by five wickets with limited further concerns and 50.4 overs still in the bank. Billingshurst remain deprived of the services of their outstanding Sri Lankan all-rounder Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi and are in desperate need of a win after two resounding league defeats and elimination from both the Sussex and National KO cups at the first hurdle. Tomorrow (Saturday) they host reigning champions Roffey, winners of all four of their games across the formats
