Dodgy drivers caught on school crossing camera phil dennett News Editor

School crossing patrollers at blackspots will get body cameras to record thoughtless drivers, if a pilot scheme proves successful. “Lollipop man” Len Howard is trying out the equipment after suffering from motorists driving past him without stopping, endangering pupils and parents about to cross the road. He has also experienced drivers winding windows down to shout abuse at him. West Sussex County Council has now joined with Camelsdale Primary School, near Billingshurst and Sussex Police to trial a body camera outside the school gates. Len wears the body camera, christened by the school as ‘Len’s Lens’, across his chest. Attached by the lapels of his coat, it can capture audio and video of motorists driving dangerously or being abusive. Temporary signs are up outside the school to warn offending motorists they are now on camera. Head teacher Sarah Palmer said: “We were concerned about the safety of our children and parents. “We have done a number of ini-

tiatives over many years and we are 01306 627555 now lucky enough to have Len, our proshop@gattonmanor.co.uk | www.gattonmanor.co.uk School Crossing Patrol officer, who stands on a busy road by a junction on the brow of a hill. “There have been a few instances when drivers have driven through without stopping when he is about to take children across the road. “We heard about the body cameras and felt it was an idea worth investigating.” The camera records every shift a School Crossing Patrol works. Sweet music as Horsham firm helps capture Chelsea Show medal Shiry plays

Celebrating colours Photo by Shuvaseeh Das Thousands of garden fans have seen a Horsham firm’s work win a silver medal at the Chelsea Flower show. Living Landscapes, led by director Tecwyn Evans, built The Pro Corda Garden, called A Suffolk Retreat, at the world-famous show and Royal Horticultural Society judges awarded the exhibit a silver medal. London-born international violist Shiry Rashkovsky, whose parents were top violinists, played in the garden with one of Pro Corda’s students, entertaining passers-by who included husband and wife actors

Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton. The exhibit was described as an uplifting artisan garden with music at its heart. It was designed by Frederic Whyte in partnership with the national music and education charity Pro Corda. The Queen was among the VIP visitors to the show. Living Landscapes worked with designer Frederic Whyte to build the garden using traditional landscaping skills, weaving together the works of a handpicked selection of Suffolk’s finest artisans. Remembering Florence in 21st century

Nurses at Horsham and Crawley celebrated the birth of the woman who set the first professional standards on the ward. They joined colleagues across the world to mark the birthday of Florence Nightingale in 1820. Nurses Day celebrates the work of nurses who make a difference to

patient safety, patient experience and the clinical effectiveness of the care that patients receive in a variety of settings, hospitals, general practice and patients’ homes. Chief Nurse and Head of Quality at Crawley and Horsham and Mid Sussex clinical commissioning groups Julia Layzell said: “A big

thank you to every one of our nurses across Sussex for the continuous improvements that enable our local population to receive a high standard of compassionate care. “Nursing is at the heart of patient care across all aspects of the NHS and the clinical commissioning groups are no exception. We are currently working within challenging times for health service delivery, and nurses working within the clinical commissioning groups clinical commissioning groups can play a significant role in influencing how and where care is delivered. “The voice of the nurse is crucial in influencing safe, effective and patient lead care and we, as nurses are experts in knowing what our patients need. This will ensure and advance the success of the profession and therefore the benefit to future patient care.” Pictured are (left to right) L-R Amy Ellison, Infection Control Nurse Lead; Julia Layzell ,Chief Nurse-Head of Quality; Samantha Farr, Clinical Quality Manager and Sue Moody, Clinical Quality Manager.

Sunday is Race for Life in Horsham Sunday is Race for Life day for hundreds of charity fund raisers in Horsham Park. Many have had June 5 in their diary for months as they have trained to raise money for Cancer Research UK. And this year organisers are hoping their generosity will smash the £100,000 barrier. The non-competitive run starts at 11am and entry is £14.99 for women over 16, while girls aged six to 15 and boys under 12 pay £10. Children under six go free and do not have to register. One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now

than ever before. Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s. The Race for Life supporters across the nation raise millions of pounds every year nationally to help beat cancer sooner by funding life-saving research. Last year 1,300 women took part in Race for Life in Horsham and raised £90,000. This year organisers say they would would like to see 1,500 women and girls stride out to help raise a target of £100,000. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across Sussex.

Horshams Drill Hall-a community gem News Martin Read - Reporter

Horsham is extraordinarily fortunate to have the Drill Hall in Denne Road, host venue to many interesting community activities. The Drill Hall was built for the local Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1927 and after the Territorial Army moved out, Horsham District Council became custodians and landlords of the building. The hall has always been used for a wide range of social activities – in the 1930s the Hollywood Circus put on a show featuring 40 artists and, incredibly, 1500 people attended an Empire Day celebration, clearly well before today’s health and safety considerations. And, photographs in the building show a very popular old time hunt ball, and an equally packed dinner for staff of a local company. There were much enjoyed dances, too, taking advantage of the sprung wooden floor. More recently the battle of the bands attracted a 500

strong audience. The main hall is used for conferences, election hustings, awards ceremonies, church, political and campaign meetings, social dances and rehearsals, charity and disability events, community shows, concerts, dance competitions, Sussex Artists’ exhibitions, Guides, Scouts and club functions, beer festivals and a wealth of other activities including Microbiz jobs and skills fairs and wellbeing, environmental and safety courses and seminars. Wedding, christening, family and retirement parties also greatly appreciate the spacious, well appointed, licensed venue. While Tuesday’s ballroom and Latin classes and Wednesday’s social dance evenings and Sussex Model Club gatherings are regular mainstays, along with monthly modern jive sessions, there is much more to be discovered and enjoyed. The substantial Drill Hall building contains a variety of smaller meeting rooms suitable for office use and a surprisingly varied list of activities, including English and French lessons and evening classes, tutor Alison Moore saying: “It’s a brilliant venue with plenty of room – one of the best facilities I’ve taught in for a long time.” There is also an artist studio and a bespoke re-

cording studio for the local weekly talking newspaper for those with sight impairment. The iconic, versatile Drill Hall has a few wrinkles, only to be expected in a character-filled but stately vintage lady, but the district’s residents are indeed lucky to be able to benefit from the town’s outstanding community venue. www.drillhall.eu

ter Horticultural Society said: “For some years now we’ve held a small Rose and Sweet Pea Show on a Wednesday evening. By joining forces, both villages can enjoy anevent worthy of the two headline blooms plus many more diverse classes too. Slinfold are hosts for this year, Southwater will hold the show in 2017.” For details and schedules, contact Southwater Horticultural Society at southwaterhs@ yahoo.com .

Jon Dean, Chairman of Roundabout Talking News, tells the District Post: “We’re part of the 500 strong national network of talking newspapers and made our first tape in December 1978 –when I joined the Charity. Originally we operated from Forest School, where the tapes were produced in one of the boys’ classrooms. We’ve gradually developed since then and now have our own dedicated recording studio in Horsham’s Drill Hall. Our Secretary Howard Brake is another long standing member and we have a team of around 50 volunteers, selecting the

news stories to be featured each week, along with general interest items to be featured in the magazine section. We then produce the digital recordings, converting them onto memory sticks, assembling them for despatch (by Royal Mail, without charge) and subsequently sorting out the pre-paid wallets returned by listeners.” The alternating teams work on a rota basis and are supported by sound technicians and computer engineers. Some “outside broadcast” interviews are also recorded. Around 135 listeners benefit from the service – including a former local resident now living in Scotland, keen to keep in touch with local news. Listeners are issued with a small, easy to use box (which also functions as a radio) on which to play the memory sticks sent to them every week. When the sticks have been listened to they are put back into the wallet and the label

is then reversed to enable despatch back free post to the service. Horsham resident 80 year old Barbara Cave says: “I’ve been enjoying the Talking News bulletins for three or four years now and look forward to them arriving each week. They keep me up to date with what is happening. I particularly enjoy the items on travel and books in the magazine section and am especially fond of the seasonal poems!” Jon Dean adds: “If you, or someone you know, is registered blind or partially sighted, we would be happy to provide a free weekly recording of Roundabout Talking News, together with a speaker system if required.” Roundabout Talking News is a registered charity, funded by street collections, donations and grants. www.roundabouttalkingnews.co.uk – jon.jj.dean@gmail.com - 01403 266924

Pupils dressed in denim to help a dementia charity. The children and staff of Billingshurst Primary School were invited to come to school dressed in as much denim as possible and donate to an important cause. The day raised £468.14. Organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, the nationwide initiative ‘Denim for Dementia’ was part of Dementia Awareness Week which aimed to offer support, raise awareness and fund future research. With an estimated 850,000 people in the UK living with some form of dementia, the chances are many of us know someone either suffering from, or caring for loved ones with, dementia. Faced with such statistics, encouraging communities to talk about dementia is more important than ever. In March Billingshurst Primary School was the first school to become part of the Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance, designed to inspire communities to be dementia friendly and promote the role of the Alzheimer’s Society in offering information and support. At the time more than 600 pupils committed to being Dementia Friends. The first challenge, to dress in denim, was embraced enthusiastically by all pupils, with some interesting denim-on-denim fashion combinations. Head teacher Helen Williamson said: “This initiative is an important community-wide effort to encourage a greater understanding of the challenges of living with dementia, which is a message we are keen to promote within the school. By openly talking about dementia children have the opportunity to ask questions which in turn promotes empathy, and incites action to help wherever possible. I have been very impressed with the way in which our pupils have addressed this issue and taken part in the fundraising.” If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend or helping create more communities that are dementia friendly, go towww.dementiafriends.org.uk to find your nearest information session or to volunteer as a Dementia Friends Champion.

Henry’s classic view of old Horsham revived

An important book on the history of Horsham has been revived by friends of Horsham Museum. Published in 1911, Henry Burstow’s Reminiscences of Horsham was a child of the Edwardian era. It transformed our idea of Horsham and became a classic of working men’s autobiographical writing. It was originally written written with quill pen or steal nib, dipped in ink and printed by hand set type on thick rough paper. Now friends of Horsham Museum using the latest digital technology and laser printing have created a new version of the masterpiece for sale. Henry Burstow’s Reminiscences of Horsham has been re-imagined for today’s readers, to re-awaken our understanding of Horsham in the age of Queen Victoria. Burstow’s reminiscences is packed full of stories and incidents from a man who lived life on the street. Through his fantastic memory it captures characters and events of the everyday that affected the vast majority of Horsham folk, not just those who wrote diaries. It tells life of an incredibly bright cobbler, a man who 100 years on would have had the opportunities to have had a different life, but used his talents to become a great folk singer, raconteur and church bell ringer who loved the ideas of numbers and patterns. The new edition of his Reminis-

cences is designed to enhance his work, to allow the stories he tells to stand out with appropriate images. The 1911 edition was published by the Free Christian Church, the 2016 has been published by one of the Church’s offspring, The Horsham Museum Society . The 1911 edition was created with the intention of giving Burstow a pension; this edition will help to raise funds for Horsham Museum. However the significant changes between 1911 and2016 editions are over 80 new illustrations, the addition of William Albery’s notes (Burstow’s first editor)from a unique copy

fought referendum and my team of volunteers did me proud”. Daniel Crouch, one of the key figures on the ‘Leave’ side, said: “I’m delighted with the packed turnout at the debates and was proud to put forward ideas about British Sovereignty.” One of the key aims of the referendum was to educate students, many of whom will be eligible to vote on June 23, on both sets of arguments. Omer Selcuk, of the ‘Leave’ campaign dramatically intervened on the last day speaking on a soapbox in the canteen to try and persuade students, to ‘vote leave’.

He said: “Despite many hardships and struggles, we stood strong and put forward an argument for a truly free Britain.” Student Scarlett Eddie, of the ‘Remain’ campaign said: “Everyone has worked so hard on this campaign and it’s been such an enjoyable and memorable experience. I’m thrilled by the result and the turnout, and I hope this gives out a strong message that young people are very much invested in politics and their futures.” Scenes from the vote are pictured.

Ladies Night returns to Station Garage

Station Garage in Horsham is delighted to announce that, due to popular demand, they will once again be hosting their Ladies Night car maintenance event on June 16. The family run Skoda dealership, based on Billingshurst Road in Broadbridge Heath, has held a number of successful events for local drivers over the past few years, including workshops for young drivers and the elderly, yet Ladies Night has proved the most popular with Sussex residents. The evening event, which runs from 6pm to 8pm, provides women with a unique opportunity to learn basic car mechanics, such as how to change a tyre, check oil and water levels or jump start a vehicle, all in a safe and secure environ-

ment. Station Garage’s friendly and supportive mechanics are on hand, throughout the evening, to offer step by step instructions and answer any car related queries from attendees. According to government statistics, the number of registered female car owners has increased by 72% since 1995 and women now account for about 40% of registered car keepers within the UK. However, it is still widely thought that female drivers are less confident than their male counterparts, when it comes to car maintenance, with many opting to contact roadside assistance rather than getting hands on with their vehicles. James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage, commented: “Our Ladies Night event is a great op-

portunity for local women to come and learn essential car maintenance skills in a relaxed environment. Feedback from previous attendees has clearly shown us that some ladies, although interested in learning basic mechanics, have never invested the time to learn them, for fear of being judged. After attending our event however, they were delighted with their new found knowledge.” The Ladies Night workshop at Station Garage is free to attend, but spaces are limited and those interested in taking part are encouraged to email: events@stationgarage. skoda.co.uk ASAP, to register their attendance and avoid disappointment.

Chamber confident about composition

The Billingshurst Chamber of Trade believes it covers a wide spectrum of business after the election of its executive committee. After the annual meeting the group’s re-elected chairman Martin Spurrier said: “With two new members joining our Excom from the banking and printing industries, they join others from web site design, accounting, baking, chiropractic, photography, telecoms, training and public relations”. He said that having representa-

tives from many different market sectors on the committee further strengthened the Chamber’s ability to speak for the Billingshurst and district business community. Mr Spurrier said: “Our main function is creating platforms and opportunities for our members to generate local business. This is what we call ‘the extra dimension’, and is our overarching strategy. But we also play a strategic role in the wellbeing of Billingshurst as a community. The village’s longterm prosperity is our vision.”The

Billingshurst Chamber was formed nearly 20 years ago and was formally constituted in 2010. It has about 70 member firms that employ about 600 people. The meeting was held at Whispers Tea Rooms in the centre of the village. Sussex Country Show to celebrate silver jubilee This year’s Sussex Country Show, which is being held in the beautiful grounds of Parham Park on June 18 and 19, is celebrating its silver jubilee. As the county’s largest countryside-themed outdoor event, Sussex Country Show is on track to welcome more than 32,000 visitors again this year. The show boasts a comprehensive itinerary for readers of The District Post, including the all-new Clay Shooting Festival, Fieldsports Arena, a fun pigeon plucking contest for children, nail-biting Chudleys Gundog Championship and havea-go airgun ranges. There’s something for all dog lovers – everything from fun have-a-go events for the family pooch, to competitive working dog tests for trained gundogs. The schedule also includes a novelty pet dog show, terrier racing, simulated coursing, as well as gundog demonstrations, scurries and a clinic in the arena. than 200 exhibition stands, picnic areas, a crammed Main Arena schedule, children’s entertainment, food festival, Spitfire aerobatic display, craft and antiques fairs and live folk music. The 22nd annual British & UK National Stickmaking Competition is set to visit

the show. Run by The British Stickmaker’s Guild, the hotly contested competition attracts all manner of sticks, from traditional thumb sticks to intri-

cately carved handle sticks. Held at 42 shows around the country, including all seven Countryman Fairs shows, each competition can attract up to 200 entries. There are 14 main classes for the more experienced stickmaker, and a further four novice classes for newbies. Entry is just 50p per stick, and medals and points are awarded for first, second and third prize. The national champion is determined by the stickmaker with the most points and announced at the British Stickmaker’s Guild AGM in October. There will be two

spectacular aerobatic Spitfire demonstrations each day. Subject to cloud cover, the 7-minute display will see a 1944 mark 9 Spitfire perform numerous daredevil manoeuvres, including victory rolls, barrel rolls, half Cubans, wingovers, derry wingovers and numerous fly passes, close to the crowd. Plus, there’s a chance to win a 30-minute flight, in a Spitfire TR9, over the English Channel. The once-in-a-lifetime prize, which is worth £2,750, will

be drawn in September, at the Midland Game Fair in Shropshire. For details on how to enter, please check the Sussex Country Show website. Run by award-winning event organiser, Countryman Fairs, the much-loved two-day event is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. CEO, Ian Harford, commented: “Every summer, British families are spoilt for choice when it comes to keeping the kids entertained. There are hundreds of country shows on offer each weekend. However, the quality of Sussex Country Show’s attractions and itinerary, speaks for itself – the event has stood the test of time and goes from strength to strength each year, as more and more people visit.” Advance tickets are available from £12 per day. Tickets bought on the day, cost £15 each. Accompanied children (aged 15 and under) can enter the show free of charge. For more information on the show, visit: www.sussexcountryshow.co.uk.

The World’s greatest big band swings into Crawley

The Glenn Miller Orchestra, led by Ray McVay and with guest stars Swing Time Jivers, will be appearing at the The Hawth, Crawley on June 12 at 3pm. Back in the late ‘30s-early ‘40s, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra packed the dance halls in the States. The band enjoyed a string of hits, like In the Mood and Tuxedo Junction, as well as Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Pennsylvania 65000, American Patrol and many others - songs and melodies that have stood the test of time. World War II brought the Miller magic to the UK. While British men were bemoaning the influx of G.I.s - “overpaid, oversexed and overhere” - they acknowledged that at least the Americans brought some great music with them. In the U.S, at the outbreak of war, Miller had initially formed a large marching band that was to be the core of a network of service orchestras. His attempts at modernizing military music were met with some

resistance from traditional-minded career officers. And, if occasionally, a little boogie-woogie shuffle crept into the marching step of the band members, it was to the delight of the fans and the ire of the officers! However, Miller was then given permission to form his 50-piece Army Air Force Band and take it to England in the summer of 1944. The band’s musical style and showmanship immediately endeared them to UK audiences, playing some 80-odd concerts around the country and performing some 40 radio broadcasts - all during the remainder of the year! On December 15, 1944, Glenn boarded a single engine C-64 Norseman aircraft to travel to Paris, France, where he was to make arrangements for a Christmas broadcast. Tragically, the plane never reached France and was never found. Summarizing Miller’s military career, General Jimmy Doolittle, brigadier general, major general and lieutenant general in the United States Army Air Forces, said: “Next to a letter from home, that organization was the greatest morale builder in the European Theater of Operations.” As far as UK music-lovers were concerned, a special relationship had been forged between them and Glenn Miller and his music - a bond that continues to this day. The current UK band was put together in 1988 by legendary musical entertainer Ray McVay, in conjunction with Glenn Miller Productions in New York. McVay, previously best known as musical director for the original Come Dancing series on BBC, approached the offices of the Glenn Miller estate, 28 years ago, seeking an arrangement to operate a Glenn Miller Orchestra in the UK Since then, over the last quarter of a century, this great orchestra has built itself into something of an institution, as it tours venues in the

country, as well as satisfying a demand for Miller’s music in Europe, Asia and South America. The Orchestra maintains the exact line up on stage devised by Glenn, consisting of the leader, five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and three rhythm, plus a male and female vocalist. The show features the sublime voices of Colin Anthony and Catherine Sykes, as well as the glorious harmonies of the Moonlight Serenaders. The band’s library comprises more than 200 scores, many of them from the original library, which includes terrific arrangements from both the civilian and Army Air Force orchestras. Songs, made famous by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong, are all featured in a show which also pays tribute to other big band leaders of the era, like Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. The current orchestra leader, Ray McVay, brings over 50 years of musical entertainment experience to the job of putting smiles on the faces of today’s audiences. The musicians are young and energetic and, it seems, constantly on the move. And if the music isn’t enough for you, McVay is bringing along an exciting dance troupe. The ‘Swing Time Jivers’ are a newly formed Authentic Jazz Dance Company, specializing in dance styles from the 1920s - 1960’s, which includes charleston, swing, lindy hop and tap dance - to name a few! Their exciting and athletic moves leaves audiences breathless! To relive the music and songs of an era that gave birth to rock’n’roll, or even experience it for the first time, come along to The Hawth this June. Tickets: £21 (Discounts: £19.50) can be purchased from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

PETs POST Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Rabbit Awareness Week begins 18th June abbi moon RSPCA

Last August, I wrote about how my family were considering getting rabbits as our family pet. After weeks of preparation and building their housing, we finally took the plunge in May, bringing home Sweetcorn and Squash from the RSPCA Guildford and District branch. Sweetcorn (our female) and Squash (our male) have settled in really well. They are very inquisitive, love running up and down their burrow pipe and are definitely keeping us on our toes. We’re taking it slowly and letting them get used to us, so we haven’t been able to check their nails and teeth yet. Rabbit Awareness Week begins on 18th June and we’ll be hopping along with Sweetcorn and Squash to Arthur Lodge veterinary practice in Horsham, one of nearly 500 veterinary practices around the country that is offering free health checks to raise awareness of the

health issues facing rabbits. There are nearly a million rabbits kept as pets in the UK and they are the fourth most popular pet. Sadly though, they are one of the most misunderstood pets, which was why Rabbit Awareness Week started 10 years to help educate rabbit owners about rabbits’ needs. This year’s Rabbit Awareness Week is focussing on companionship. A PDSA report in 2015 found that over 57% of rabbits live alone. As a social species, rabbits need the company of other rabbits; these single bunnies needs a buddy! The best combination is a neutered male and a neutered female. If you have a bunny and you need to get a friend for them, speak to a rescue organisation as they will be able to help you choose a suitable friend and give you lots of advice and support on introducing the bunnies. Introductions needs to be done carefully and gradually otherwise the rabbits may not actually like each other and there’s nothing worse than living with someone you don’t like! As well as veterinary practices offering free health checks, many

retailers will be running fun activities to spread the word about how to get the most out of pet rabbits by keeping them happy and healthy. The RSPCA Horsham shop, on East

Street, will be giving advice on rabbit issues and running some creative rabbit-themed activities to keep the little ones amused. So why not pop in between 18th and 26th

June to see what they are up to. You can find out more about Rabbit Awareness Week at www. rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk

The Danger of Hairballs A large clump of ingested hair can block a cat’s intestinal tract and pose a deadly threat. Here’s how to prevent them. Every so often, your otherwise fastidious cat will do an alarming and somewhat disgusting thing. She’ll awake from a peaceful nap, rise up on her paws, retch convulsively for a moment or two, and spit up what may appear at first glance to be a damp clump. What the animal has disgorged — in the middle of your kitchen floor or, worse yet, in the middle of your prized Persian rug — is a trichobezoar, a wad of undigested hair that is commonly referred to as a hairball. Despite the term, disgorged hairballs are not usually round. They are often slender and cylindrical, shaped more like a cigar or sausage than a ball. Regurgitated hairballs are variable in size; though usually about an inch long, they can be as long as five inches and an inch thick. The colour is mainly that of the cat’s coat, darkened by the colour of the animal’s food and various gastric secretions, such as green bile. The ejected matter will typically have an unpleasant but tolerable smell. Hairballs are the unsavoury by-product of a normal habit. As your cat grooms it swallows a lot of loose hair. This happens because the tiny backward-slanted projections that roughen the surface of their tongue propel the hair down their throat and into their stomach. Unfortunately the main component of hair — a tough, insoluble protein substance called keratin — is indigestible. While most of the swallowed hair eventually passes through the animal’s digestive

tract and gets excreted intact in the faeces, some of it remains in the stomach and gradually accumulates into a damp clump — the hairball. It’s not uncommon for a cat to regurgitate a hairball once every week or two. Aside from inconvenience to the owner, this is nothing to worry about. However, the wad of matted hair can pose a serious health threat it if grows too large to pass through the narrow sphincters leading either from the oesophagus to the stomach or from the stomach to the intestinal tract. A cat that is lethargic, refuses to eat for more than a day or two or has had repeated episodes of unproductive retching or true vomiting should be examined by a vet without delay as it is possible that the frequent hacking has nothing at all to do with hairballs. It may instead be a sign of another gastrointestinal problem or of a respiratory ailment, such as asthma, in which case emergency treatment may be necessary. Diagnosis of intestinal blockage is based on physical examination, blood tests, X-rays, perhaps ultrasound, and a history of the animal’s pattern of hairball regurgitation. If a blockage is detected, surgery may be required in order to remove the hairball. More often, however, therapy will centre on protecting the intestines through several days of clinical care that includes the use of a laxative to move the hairball through the digestive tract. Although laxatives may be effective in enabling passage of a stubborn hairball owners should never give their cats a laxative without the approval and supervision of a vet.

Rightsizers - a new breed of buyers?

David Wilson Homes, which is building new homes across Sussex including at Hurstpierpoint and Storrington, says typical downsizers looking for a smaller home for their retirement have been replaced by rightsizers - a new breed of buyers who put space, location and a new lease of life at the top of their priority list. Based on this new sector emerging, David Wilson Homes has come up with some typical rightsizers and identified key buyers in this new sector. The fun lover This is the most common rightsizer. These people want their ideal lifestyle and that means space to entertain and room for visitors to stay overnight – but none of the maintenance associated with their existing older home. These people regard a move as the start of their second youth, living in a great location suited to their lives and aspirations. The DIY-free buyer For years these buyers have spent valuable weekends and holidays renovating and decorating their homes and looking after gardens. They have put up with builders creating a better layout and have spent thousands on repairs. This is now behind them and in a new home they have no decorating, the house is their perfect layout and the appliances are all brand new. The wise fox This new breed of buyer makes considered purchases and is keen to spend money wisely. They know that new homes are more energy efficient and cheaper to run. They want to spend their money on having a good time rather than heating an old house, replacing worn out appliances and paying for costly repairs. The traditional downsizer The traditional downsizer has not totally disappeared. But they have become more discerning and want a quality new home, space for their valued possessions and a sought-after location in a new community.

Another winning week for Pulborough Bowls Club

Pulborough have continued their good start

Bowls Jane Gray- Pulborough BC Pulborough started the week at home to Norfolk BC (Littlehampton), in the Brookes Motors League. After a 4 point haul against Chichester in the last round, hopes were high for a good result. 2 triples played in the league and 1 friendly. Skip, John Brown, with lead, July Day and number 2, Chris Etherington, had a close game that finished 15/13 to Pulborough. Alan Jordan, Jane Gray and Melvin Green had a tougher game, being one step behind Norfolk, pulling it back to 7 shots a piece by end 8. A 5 on end 10 set the scene for the second half, with the Pulborough players persistently scoring 2’s and 3’s to finish on an Impressive 24/13 scoreline to steal top rink and

Pulborough finished the day with the full 6 league points. The week finished in the sunshine against Fittleworth, in the first of 2 friendlies for 2016. Marc Lancaster and team struggled to keep pace with their opposition through the first half of the game, but suddenly they found form, scoring a 5 on end 15, to pull ahead and win 17/13. Captain, Paul Day, with lead, George Lewis and number 2, Alan Jordan, scored heavily in the early stages of their game to be 10/5 ahead by end 10. Unmatched by their opposition, they finished 16/13 in front. Top rink for the day went to John Brown, Jane Gray and Mick Ayling, after being stuck on 6 points for 6 ends, they went on to win the next 9 ends, throwing in a 6 for good measure, to finish on 28/10 and give a final score to Pulborough of 61/36.

Hat-trick of wins for Horsham Park Bowls David Spurr - Horsham Park BC

Bowls Keith Barraclough - Billingshurst BC

Billingshurst had three players taking part in county competitions. In the Champion of Champions 1st round, Barry Gilbert played Ken Staton from The Drive BC (Hove) at home. Play was fairly evenly matched until Barry was unfortunate enough to drop a 4. From then on he was playing “catch-up” and eventually lost 21-13. Alan Readshaw and Ray Neal, playing at home in the 1st round of the county pairs, came up against

Jamie Dunk and John Mc Murran from Shoreham BC. The home pair took a slender lead early on, only to see the visitors catch up. On the 20th end the visitors dropped a 2 to give the home pair a 14-12 advantage. Pressing for at least a count of 2 on the final end to force an extra end the Shoreham duo could only score one, thus giving Alan and Ray a well-earned victory. In the next round the Billingshurst pair will be playing away at either Henfield or Horsham. St Francis 74 – 58 Billingshurst Billingshurst visited St Francis and found themselves 13 adrift at

the break. Billingshurst managed to arrest their decline on the back 9 but were unable to stop the hosts running out winners by 16 shots. Top rink for Billingshurst went Brian Richards, Ray Neal and Alan Knight (+12). Ray Sutton, Betty Weller & Alan Readshaw lost 12-18 Tessa Richards, Barry Gilbert & John Bennett lost 12-24 June Bennett, John Lucas & Geoff Weller lost 12-22 Brian Richards, Ray Neal & Alan Knight won 22-10.

Horsham Park Ladies 54 – 40 Horsham Ladies Horsham Park Ladies enjoyed a good home win against local rivals Horsham Ladies by 54 - 40. Park’s top rink, skipped by Angela Spurr with Norma Covey and Beryl Noble, won by 12 shots, 20 shots to 8. Park’s other winning rink was skipped by Captain Bryony Wood who had a close game throughout but managed to take the final 2 shots, winning by 22 shots to 19. Park’s only losing rink was also one shot up going into the last end but this time went down 2 shots and ended up losing by 1. Horsham Park BC 78 – 72 Downsman BC Horsham Park only won 2 of the 5 rinks against Downsman Bowls Club, but still managed to win overall by 6 shots. Park’s top rink went to David James with Sylvia English and

John Howberry-Gale who contributed most to the overall score by dominating the game from the start and winning by 13 shots, 22 to 9. Harry Smith skipped Park’s other winning rink, 14 shots to 11. Park’s three losing rinks all had close games but lost by 2, 3 and 5 shots respectively. Palmer crashes out early at Monaco Grand Prix Jolyon Palmer before crashing at a wet Monaco GP

Formula One Dave Smith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer and his Renault Sport Formula One Team had a disappointing time at the iconic Monaco Grand Prix. Both Palmer and his teammate Kevin Magnussen failed to finish the race with Southwater’s Palmer crashing out early in the very wet conditions after skidding on the slippery surface of a zebra crossing on the famous road circuit.

After starting from 18th on the grid - with full wet tyres - Palmer aquaplaned into the barriers on the main straight and then suffered the same fate at Sainte Devote on the eighth lap causing considerable damage to his car and cutting short his race. A disappointed Jolyon Palmer said, “The traction was appalling after the safety car and I got caught out. I had wheel spin in fifth gear on the white line that crosses the track. There was nothing I could

Horsham Hawks are County Champions U12 Hawks are County Champions

Youth Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor The U12 Horsham Hawks picked up the inaugural Jake Andrews Trophy with a hard fought 69-68 victory over the Crawley Cagers in the Sussex junior basketball playoff final in Brighton. Horsham’s Matt Campbell opened the scoring with further hoops from Josh Tavolieri, Zach Holden, Miguel Venturini and Henry Butler giving the Hawks a 21-15 lead as the first quarter came to an end. Despite some tough

play from Hawk’s Patrick JfremovKustov, Eshan Wakefield, Oscar Gill and Oliver Ashby, the second quarter saw an emphatic response from Crawley who clawed their way back into the contest to take a 35-26 advantage going into the half time break A huge 31-8 third quarter offensive master class from Horsham that included moments of brilliance from Tavolieri, Venturini and Butler put Horsham back ahead 57-43. Crawley refused to quit and picked up the defensive pressure

in the fourth quarter to go on a massive 23-9 run to tie the game at 66-66 and just sixty seconds to go in the game. A free throw from Campbell put the Hawks ahead by a single point at 67-66 before Crawley took a 68-67 lead on a drive to the basket and 40 seconds remaining. Crawley fouled again and another free throw from Campbell tied the score once more at 68-68 before a further Crawley foul put Tavolieri on the free throw line with 5.4 seconds remaining. Tavolieri calmly made the first shot to put Horsham ahead 69-68 as the end of game buzzer sounded, crowning Horsham County Champions. Miguel Venturini (14 points and 9 assists) was awarded MVP for the Hawks while Head Coach Will Belfield said ‘I am so proud of what the team has achieved today. The tide may have been against us going into that final minute, but it’s exactly at that moment that the finest amongst us step up.’ Scorers: Josh Tavolieri – 30, Miguel Venturini - 14 pts, Matt Campbell – 11, Henry Butler – 11, Zach Holden – 3, Oscar, Eshan, Oliver, Patrick, Rachel, Harry, David, Jasmine.

forward to Canada and putting this weekend behind me. Monaco hasn’t been good to me this year so we need to move on to the next race and look for a better weekend.” The race was won by Britain’s Lewis Hamilton who benefitted

from a poor pit stop from the Red Bull team that hindered second placed Daniel Ricciardo allowing Hamilton to close the gap on his Mercedes team mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg, who finished seventh.

Popular tournament returns to Horsham Monday May 30 – Dr John Dew Memorial U10 Tournament Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter From 9.30am on Monday there was cricket, cricket and even more cricket at Horsham CC, with rounds of five Kwik cricket matches going on simultaneously. Two U10 mixed teams from Horsham competed, together with visiting sides from Ansty, Billingshurst, East Grinstead, Lingfield, Roffey, Rudgwick, Southwater and Steyning, each playing four preliminary games before the semi finals and final. The tournament was established in memory of the late Dr John Dew, founder of Horsham’s junior section in 1959, now such an important element of the club. John Dew was associated with Horsham CC for an extremely lengthy period, notably as Club

Captain, Chairman and then for over 40 years - President. His colts’ coaching structure has produced many first class players at Cricketfield Road. Tournament managers Colin Mitcham and Polly Clark were very busy on the day, Colin telling the District Post: “It’s great to see so many kids demonstrating their passion and enthusiasm for cricket – this is such a good family fun day!” Polly adding: “This is the seventh year of the tournament and is a fitting tribute to John Dew – it’s always wonderful to see cricket being played his way – striving to win, but fairly and with respect for the opposition and team mates.” Lingfield beat Southwater in the final, Horsham CC winning plaudits from parents for the smooth administration of the outstanding event, clearly greatly enjoyed by their children.

Billingshurst miss out in T20 match Saturday May 28 - Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 131-8 (20 0vers) Billingshurst 104 all out (19.2 overs) Brighton & Hove won by 27 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Inclement weather delayed the start at the Nevill Sports Ground, reducing the match to a T20 contest. Brighton elected to bat after winning the toss, but Billingshurst once again dismissed Sussex’s

Philip Salt - Brighton’s captain cheaply. Ben Williams took 3-24, Shane West 2-24 and James Chriss 1-19, boosted by two run outs, no batsman passing Henry Hunt’s 27. But, with the ball turning square a target of 132 was a stiff challenge, Billingshurst wicket keeper Mike Burroughs saying: “We bowled well, especially Ben Williams and Tom Haynes, but we shouldn’t really have let them get so many.” Replying, Billingshurst recovered to 31-1 and then 72-3 but once Burroughs had departed for 40 only Jay Hartard reached double figures. The last six wickets fell for 14 runs

with Chris Mates taking 5-24 as Billingshurst slid to their third Premier League defeat in their four games this season, leaving them determined to resolve their overseas player vacancy shortly, either by re-signing their outstanding Sri Lankan all rounder Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi or by registering a suitable replacement if Danny’s visa rejection persists. Other options to strengthen the team are also under consideration. Tomorrow (Saturday) Billingshurst return home to Jubilee Fields to take on current second placed Cuckfield.

hill’s middle and lower order subsided – with 26 overs unused. Tom Haines told the District Post: “I thought I’d just bat, to see whether I could dig Horsham out of trouble, then when Jofra came in the spinners were on and he just pinged them everywhere!” Skipper James Johnson said: “Tom batted really well and then Jofra was phenomenal – with him coming in at seven I wasn’t unduly worried when we were five down because we had a great batting line up.” The 30 point win puts Horsham on 107, 27 ahead of new runners up Cuckfield. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham welcome Hastings, currently languishing at the foot of the table with just one win from four starts. Meanwhile, former Horsham overseas player Matt Henry, now a New Zealand international, has been pulling up trees for Worcestershire – taking six wickets and scoring an unbeaten 49 in his adopted Photo by Tom Hogsflesh county’s defeat of Leicestershire.

Opening bowlers Archer and David Crowshaw each took two wickets and Haines and Will Beer one apiece, but it was Michael Munday, continuing his early season form who grabbed 4-21 in double quick time, ensuring that Bex-

Horsham recovered from early setbacks to post a demanding total courtesy of two outstanding innings on a slow turner and then bowled out Bexhill to win by a street. With Horsham on 3-2 and then 86-5 their comprehensive victory was difficult to predict – until overseas player Jofra Archer joined Tom Haines at the wicket. With Haines holding secure Archer let loose, the pair putting on 143 together by the time Tom departed for 81. Archer kept bludgeoning, finishing with 128, including 14 fours and 8 sixes from 78 balls, former Horsham Assistant Groundsman Joe Cox taking 5-63. When Bexhill replied they too lost early wickets, Jofra Archer’s 128 runs but on 36-2 there was no helped Horsham to victory hint that Horsham’s win would be so emphatic.

Roffey cruise through to regional final Roffey’s Luke Barnard’s 5-35 killed off Reigate

Photo by John Lines Sunday May 29 - England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship Reigate Priory 180 all out (39.5 overs) Roffey 184-4 (38.2 overs) Roffey won by 6 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter What a difference a day made! Just 24 hours before Roffey had been annihilated in the Sussex Premier League and Reigate Priory, Surrey Championship leaders, had scored 338-4 in 50 overs to win their

fourth league match in as many starts. But, last Sunday Roffey bounced back with a comfortable home win against Reigate in the national Knock Out Cup. The visitors won the toss and set off very positively, reaching 65-1 off ten overs with left hander Richard Oliver batting aggressively. Oliver had made 117 the day before (following previous first class hundreds for Worcestershire - where he opened the batting with England’s Moeen Ali - including a century against Sussex) but

was bowled for 50 by Rohit Jagota. Former Horsham player Ben Shoare chipped in with 35 until Roffey repeated their habit of putting a brake on the opposition and then snaring wickets when they became desperate for runs, confining Reigate to 104-4 at the half way stage of their innings. Dan Smith took 2-9 and Alex Collins and Tom Barnes one each, but Luke Barnard with 5-35 master-minded Reigate’s slide to an inadequate 180 all out. In reply the Fleming brothers provided a solid platform – Josh scoring 46 and George 43 – before a breezy unbeaten 57 from Jagota carried Roffey home with 40 balls to spare. Reigate Capain, slow leftarmer Luke Beaven, who has played for Surrey, took 6-31in Reigate’s last league match but went wicketless this time. Skipper Matt Davies told the District Post: “They got off to a bit of a flyer but our bowlers reined them in, then we chased very competently – I thought we out-played them in all three aspects of the game today.” Rohit added: “The pitch wasn’t easy – it was turning a lot. 225 would have been a killer score but we kept them down to a manageable target and then set up the win.” In the Regional Final on Sunday June 19 Roffey travel to Weybridge CC (currently sixth in the Surrey Championship).

The competition was started by Dan Mulholland in 1983, when the Cottesmore Veterans was formed, and has been played annually as a

Hatchett job sinks Roffey in the gloom Saturday May 28 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 52 All Out (22.0 overs) East Grinstead 56-0 (9.5 overs) East Grinstead won by 10 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In form Roffey suffered their heaviest Premier League defeat after crucially losing the toss and being put in to bat in dismal, damp, bowler-friendly conditions against Lewis Hatchett, the young left-arm fast bowler who had taken five wickets in an innings for Sussex earlier in the month. East Grinstead subsequently batted in sunshine. That said it was a completely one- sided affair with only one winner from the opening over of the match. There was controversy from Hatchett’s very first ball when a declined appeal was reversed after representations from fielders. The incoming batsman was then bowled first ball and another batsman was castled, leaving Roffey condemned at 0-3 just five balls from the start. Rohit Jagota top scored with 23 and Theo Rivers made 19, but

seven batsmen failed to score as Hatchett, (who had opened the batting for East Grinstead last week, scoring 93 not out), bowling with fire and lift from the top end finished with 6-24. Ian Sturmer – also with first class experience - took 4-27, the pair completing the rout unchanged amid vociferous encouragement from their team mates. When East Grinstead replied, Roffey’s normally impeccable fielding deserted them, a regulation outfield catch was shelled in the first over, following which former Sussex player Will Adkin racked up an unbeaten 45, the visitors winning at a canter by ten wickets in just 59 balls before 3.30pm, despite a delayed start. Hatchett told the District Post: “There was unpredictable movement at times and I just exploited that.” Double League Champions Roffey, habitually hard to beat at home, were left shell-shocked - Captain Matt Davies summing up with: “We were just abysmal – there’s nothing else to say!” With no points from this game Roffey slip from second to sixth. Tomorrow (Saturday) they play Preston Nomads at Fulking, where Roffey have a good record.
