Singing youngsters at Upper Beeding got well ahead of last weekend’s official 90th birthday celebrations for the Queen. The sang “Happy Birthday” in her honour as part of a joint celebration of The Towers school’s feast day, Corpus Christi and the Queen’s 90th birthday. Having also enjoyed a picnic

lunch together the school retired to the field for the afternoon’s fun. From nursery to GCSE pupils everyone spent the afternoon negotiating inflatables provided by the Parent Teacher Association. Energy levels were maintained by frequent ice cream and birthday cake stops.

Christ’s Band bowls them over for Queen’s Mall party

Youngsters had the thrills of a lifetime as their school band played at The Mall in London for the Queen’s 90th birthday party. After a damp start the sun came out when the Christ’s Hospital Band marched past The Queen on Sunday. With themes based around each decade of The Queen’s sovereignty, Christ’s Hospital was the only school to provide musical accompaniment for the nation’s largest street party. Senior Drum Major Jed Davies saluted the royal box as the band marched past as part of the 90s celebrations to an ar-

rangement of Spice Girls’ Wannabe. There were also cheers from the crowd along The Mall when the Drum Major tossed the mace high into the air. Guy Perricone, treasurer of Christ’s Hospital said: “Even the rain could not dampen my pride when I watched the band march down The Mall in the parade twice, once in the pouring rain, and once, mercifully, in the dry. They were resplendent and absolutely magnificent. Everybody I was with said the same, and those who are not familiar with the school immediately

wanted to know who these brilliant children were. As ever, they were wonderful and were undoubtedly one of the highlights of what was a very special day indeed.” The weekend was the highlight of the School year for the Band as they had another major engagement on the Saturday when the musicians also performed on the pitch at Lord’s, the official home of cricket, during the interval of the third day of the test match against Sri Lanka. Pictured are the band at The Mall and at Lord’s. Lords picture by Matt Bright.

Reception drop off and pick up from 8.30 to 5.30 week days, earlier by appointment

A judge found herself being judged as the South of England Show adopted sheep as its 2016 theme. Anne Lambert from Rusper is a regular judge of Southdown Sheep contests, but at Ardingly she had her own immaculate Southdowns under scrutiny from others for attributes such as fine, dense wool, large and bright eyes and alertness. Delighted Anne, who was taking on much some bigger farms, emerged with a clutch of rosettes including a first for a fine pair of Southdown ewe lambs as well as a second, two thirds and some other awards. Broadfield Womens Institute emerged with broad smiles winning a first in the WI contests for its attractive “alfresco” class exhibit, which judges described as “a vibrant bunch” and picking up a second place for its exhibit in the class for fresh plant material in a bucket. Roffey Greenfields took a second with its fantasy flowers entry of knitted flowers. From Cowfold the Camelia Botnar Foundation’s imaginative and practical sofa with overhead

bunk made by Jordan Ros, 19, so impressed visitors to the Young Craftsmen centre competition that one bought it for £650. A delicate dress by Millais School pupil Georgia Pescud, 15, attracted many admirers. One disappointment for flower fans was the withdrawal this year of the popular and highly attractive floral art competition because of the expense of creating and staging the elaborate exhibits. The bustling show coincided with the official 90th birthday of the Queen, and there were small tributes to her in the flower tent and the Young Farmers contests, including a winning entry in a childrens’ class by Bolnore Primary. Although farming took pride of place, with farmers and handlers vying for coveted prizes in hundreds of livestock classes, there were plenty of other attractions over the three days in the main and outer rings. Entertainments included the White Helmets motorcycle team and a new attraction, the accoustic stage.

Proceeds will go to HomeStart CHAMS , which is the charity partner for Gauntlet Games in Handcross, on August 6. Aneliese Whittaker, events and community fund raiser at Home-Start said: “This is a great opportunity to volunteer in a really fun way. “We are looking for local people interested in volunteering to be a Gladiator for the day. It’s also an important event for us, raising much needed funds for our work, and the help of volunteers is crucial.” The charity reaches hunGladiator action

dreds of local children each year through its support of families struggling with issues such as isolation, neglect, illness, bereavement and disability. It works throughout Horsham, Mid Sussex and Crawley and in the last year supported 436 children in 175 families. Having fun

Volunteers who give thousands of hours of unpaid work each year enjoyed a “thank you” party from Age UK Horsham District. They were entertained and dined as part of the country-wide Big Celebration” during Volunteers Week. A team of 115 people currently volunteers for Age UK Horsham District. Age UK Horsham District invited them to their Lavinia House premises for a fun, informal afternoon that included live jazz performed by Peter Godfrey’s Jazz Quartet. Jane Strong, Home Service Man-

ager for Age UK Horsham District said: “Without our volunteers we couldn’t run the extensive range of services we currently provide. Almost immediately after joining Age UK Horsham District last year I became aware of the fantastic work that our volunteers do such as helping at clubs, visiting older people in their homes, helping with our Home from Hospital service, administrative functions and fundraising events across the District. The Board of Trustees is also all volunteers who give their time for the charity.”

Jane added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who helped us make this event possible by donating prizes for our special thank you raffle and those who donated theirservices for free, including Special Creations by Jane, Waterstone’s Horsham, Carmela’s Restaurant Horsham, Wimblehurst Chocolates Horsham, Samuel Parker Horsham , John Lewis at Home Horsham, Beauty Secrets Horsham, La Source Horsham, NonStop Party Shop Horsham, and The Balloon Company, Oslo.”

Summer blitz on drink and drugs drivers under way Drink and drugs drivers face a summer blitz from police. Surrey and Sussex Police are running their seasonal campaign until July 10. Operation Dragonfly is a yearround strategy, run in conjunction with Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, which targets offenders in a bid to prevent collisions and save lives on the roads across the two counties. As part of the summer campaign officers are carrying out dedicated patrols to identify motorists who break the law and risk the lives of themselves and others’. Police made 170 arrests in Sussex as part of the operation in June 2015; 148 on suspicion of drink-driving and 22 on suspicion of drug-driving. This is compared to 143 the previous summer. Sergeant Phil Badman, of the Surrey and Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “As part of this operation, we will be increasing patrols and carrying out routine checks on motorists in a

bid to detect and deter drink and drug-drivers. “However, it’s important to note that while we will have officers dedicated to targeting offend-

a year-round operation and if you are caught, you will face the consequences ers throughout the summer, it is a year-round operation and if you are caught, you will face the consequences. “A lot of people like to have a drink when the sun is out, whether they are on holiday, having a barbecue or relaxing with friends. And while we encourage everyone to enjoy themselves and have fun in the sun, we also want them to act responsibly.

To be consistent with previous operations, Surrey and Sussex Police are continuing to identify anyone charged with drink or drug-driving. People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. They can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org). Horsham in Bloom award boosts Beaver gardening Beaver scouts will be eating their home-grown carrots, peas and potatoes next month, after help from parents, local businesses and a bit of sun and rain. Their planting started with a £100 grant from Horsham in Bloom, and then Worth Scaffolding Company donated boards for the planters, which the parents then helped to build. Caroline McCurrach, Kestrel and 2nd Horsham Michigan Beaver Scout leader, said: “This has become a real community project that we hope

will inspire the children and their families to ‘grow their own’ even if on a very small scale. Thanks to everyone who got stuck in and to Horsham in Bloom for the grant!” Sue Brundish, Chair of Horsham in Bloom, said: “We’re delighted to support this enterprising project. It means the children can learn the skills and thrills of planting and maintaining their crops. And I’m sure that the most exciting and rewarding part will be harvesting and tasting the produce”

70 years of putting focus on farming

This Sunday’s Cranleigh show celebrates its 70th anniversary in style. From horse teams, mass dairy cows and the first little grey called Fergie, the show has charted all the changes in farming since the end of the Second World War. After the first ploughing match in 1946, the first combined show and ploughing match took place at Knowle Park on October 4, 1947, and the event was all about farming – no motorcycle stuntmen in those days, not even riding horse classes. There were huge numbers of dairy cattle, Jerseys, Ayrshires and Short Horn, no Friesians then, and competitions for rick building, thatching and root crops. Dogs and a flower show were soon to make an appearance too. All the trade stands, then known as side-shows, were farm related

such as corn merchants, auctioneers, buildings, machinery and chemicals salesmen, and woodland crafts. Classes were extended to pigs in 1948, sheep in about 1954 and horse classes in 1956. John Plumber, a retired dairy farmer, has only missed one show, because of illness, since 1947. But two shows had to be cancelled due to an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 1952 and flooding in 1974. John said: ““In the early days there were lots of pre-war tractors and lots of horse ploughing. And I remember as a boy seeing the first Massey Ferguson tractor which had hydraulic links heralding a new age of agricultural technology. “There were many cattle – by the time I was actively involved in the show we had hundreds of entries, nearly all dairy.” Show records reveal a peak in

1957 when there were 515 cattle and a total of 1,435 entries of all kinds. John said: “We had enough interest in the agricultural classes not to need to expand into other Areas. “There were no entertainments as farming was strong enough and the centre piece of the show was the grand parade. There were so many cows it was amazing.” Visit www.cranleighshow.co.uk for entry forms and tickets. Online bookings: Adult £11; Senior (60+) £7; Children 5-16 £1. Under 5s FREE; Day membership of Cranleigh and South East Agricultural Society, entitling you to use of the members marquee and facilities £20. Full price tickets will be available on the day - Adult £14; Senior £10; Child £1. Dogs are welcome on leads. Parking is free. Scenes from past shows are pictured.

Scarecrows at 2016 show A scarecrow contest is a feature of the 2016 Cranleigh Show this Sunday. Its theme is ‘AT THE MOVIES’ and entries should be linked to a film, a film star or a TV character. The competition is open to children, schools, youth groups, families and all budding young farmers. The idea is to use recycled materials wherever possible to make a scarecrow and, if new materials are used, then they should be able to be recycled or reused afterwards. There is no limit to the number of scarecrows anyone can enter. Entry is free and there are prizes. Just let the show know you are entering by going to www. cranleighshow.co.uk. Gates open on to Cranleigh Showground at 8am.

Young people from Collyer’s college in Horsham completed a challenging expedition in the New Forest. The students are completing the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport for Outdoor Activities. Learners are taught about the values of outdoor education and learn the practical skills and rules relating to a range of outdoor activities, including: mountain biking and orienteering alongside units in anatomy and physiology, sports psychology and sports training. James Gordon, Collyer’s Head of Faculty for Business, Sport and Social Sciences said: “We are incredibly proud of these talented students, who have demonstrated so much potential. They adapted quickly and were keen to learn new skills and adapt to the challenge over the two days. I’m delighted that 80% of the group have applied to return to Collyer’s next year to complete Advanced or Level 3 equivalent qualifications.” For the New Forest trip students were asked to plan, then navigate, a 30 kilometre route independently.

It was not just theory when more than 20 local teachers attended a primary schools physical education and sport conference at Pavilions in the Park, Horsham. After presentations the teachers tried the new on-site High Places facility, futsal, which is a variation of football, tennis delivery ideas, cycling ramp challenges, skateboarding and disc golf. Horsham Primary PE and Sport chairman Alexis Conway opened the day and after a review of local inter-school events the audience heard presentations from Lorraine Everard of the Youth Sport Trust about the School Games, Gary Marlow of Marlow Sports about orienteering and Craig Jones of Fit for Sport about assessing fitness impact in schools. Horsham District Council’s

sports development officer, Ian Ford, helped coordinate the event and said: “The day went well and I hope teachers learned a lot and enjoyed themselves in the process. The teachers who attended were fantastic. Across a 6 hour day that involved taking in lots of information and doing a variety of activities there was no evidence of anyone flagging. “It was also interesting to see some hidden talents come to the fore – Leechpool’s Cathy Smith showed herself to be a confident mountain biker, Ben Sykes and Chris Gunn from Holbrook and Greenway schools respectively both being a bit nifty on a skateboard and Abby Vincent from Heron Way being able to belt out a Hollywoodstyle scream at various points on the High Ropes experience.”

Warning about toxic gardens Pollution

A trend for building housing estates without mains sewage will result in toxic gardens, noxious smells and increased rural pollution, warns a Sussex environment group. The county group of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England says a growing number of Sussex developers are seeking to overcome the problem of rural sewage by installing what are known as ‘Packaged Treatment Plants’ which discharge into local ditches and streams. It says the plants have been used for individual rural homes for many years, but there is growing concern that using the same system for larger housing estates could lead to uncontrolled pollution. Computer Scientist, Ian Simmons lives near to a small housing estate using one of the plants in the village of Sayers Common, near Henfield. He says the system fails on average every 18 months with disastrous consequences. Mr Simmons said: “We’ve had one failure already this year. “It pumps out into a stream that emerges at the end of my garden, so when it fails it smells very badly indeed. The stream unfortunately goes milky white with raw sewage and obviously kills all the local wildlife. It is near to our vegetable garden and it makes you think ‘I don’t want those vegetables.’” Director for the Campaign Kia Trainor says pressure to meet housing targets can make the situation worse. He points out using the plants need a permit from the Environment Agency, something he says which was obtained retrospectively in Sayers Common. Mr Simmons has some sobering advice for councils considering the plant option. He said: “Don’t do it. “It’s madness. You will just pollute your local environment because they will fail and you are going to have pollution every time”

The Friends of New Street Garden held their Summer Family Fun Day last Sunday in New Street Garden. Despite a less than promising start to the day, stallholders braved the wet weather and set up their stalls around the garden. This is the second Fun Day the Friends have organised and the many stalls included two colourful plant stalls, offering a variety of vegetable and cottage garden plants, handmade jewellery and gift tags, cards and wrapping paper, and some quirky wax crayon sets for the children. There was also a stall selling some beautiful vintage pieces and the opportunity to buy second hand books, toys and games. Temptation was on hand with delicious cupcakes, jars of local honey and some intriguing Brazilian truffles. The fun atmosphere was enhanced with live music, which visitors enjoyed while indulging in an ice cream or tea or coffee. It was not possible to have the bouncy castle on site due to the wet weather, but youngsters (and adults) made their own fun with some great footballing skills and

the chance to catch up with friends and neighbours. A representative of New Street Garden said: “A special thank you to the organisers and to everyone who came to sell, buy or just visit this lovely space. “New Street Garden is a pleasant community garden for use by the residents of surrounding streets. It’s a place to sit down for a quiet read; where youngsters can play football and have a good run around in safety; or where local families can hold picnics or children’s parties. Older residents may remember the garden as an untidy piece of open ground. Promising pentathlete in GB talent programme

A student at a Horsham school is bidding for more success with the ambitious Pentathlon GB talent programme. Inspired by winning her first GB vest, Farlington School’s Gabriella Eltham has her sights on more international competition. Sports scholar Gabriella is training to compete in the modern pentathlon of swimming, fencing, riding, running and laser target shooting. Each discipline is held separately, apart from the running and shooting, which are held together in a challenging combined event. Competitors gain modern pentathlon points across each disci-

pline, resulting in a handicapped start for the final competition - the combined event. The winner of the competition is simply the first person to cross the finish line. The Pentathlon GB training programme includes shooting training every week at Medway Park, Kent, athletics at Broadbridge Heath, fencing at Farlington and Crawley, swimming at The Pavilions, Horsham and K2, Crawley. This averages 22 hours a week. At Easter, she travelled with nine other Team GB young pentathletes for a week-long training camp to Portugal. This entailed two swims a day for four hours and two combined sessions of running and shooting. The week

culminated in the team competing at the Portugal National Triathlon in Leiria where she finished 6th. Sara Whittaker, Director of PE and Games at Farlington School, said: “Gabriella is a fantastic athlete with a great attitude and lots of potential. To be selected to train at this national, elite level is a major achievement. “We are very proud of her at Farlington. As a sports and academic Scholar, she is a great role model to the other students. I’m sure she will make the most of this opportunity.” Gabriella is pictured in action aking aim at shooting.

Government £841,000 pot will ease West Sussex potholes Drivers should see a summer of action over potholes, road chiefs have pledged. West Sussex County Council will use £841,000 awarded by the Department of Transport as part of its share of the Government’s Pothole Action Fund. Officers will use the funds to make permanent pothole repairs, and resurface or treat roads to prevent potholes forming in the first place. It is anticipated the fund will repair the equivalent of 15,868 potholes in the next year. The funding is being split into three areas. The first is permanent pothole repairs, with a budget of £350,000. £50,000 of it is to split to be spent equally in Crawley, Mid Sussex, Worthing, Adur, Arun/Horsham and Chichester districts. Other money will pay for two additional maintenance gangs to start work this month of July and repairs to target roads where ‘repeat defects’ form, using data from customer complaints to compile a list. The second part of the funding is £350,000 on resurfacing and treating roads. It will be focused on roads which have been

inspected and is known maintenance is needed. A list of roads is to be confirmed in June or July and work is planned to start in summer or autumn. The third part of funding is £150,000 on repairing the centre joints of A and B class roads. Repairs will be done around the same time as road markings and the B2145 and B2201 Donnington to Selsey route will be prioritised. Work is expected to be completed June or July, subject to weather. The work will complement the County Council’s existing annual road maintenance programme. County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport John O’Brien said: “Repairing and preparing our roads over the summer is a key part of our strategy to protect our roads from pothole damage caused in winter. “This extra investment from the Government strengthens our hand. “We care for almost 2,500 miles of road, so this funding will help us target locations we know are in need of attention that have just missed out before.”

Choirs join forces in Somme tribute Concordia Singers

Two choirs are joining their voices for a tribute to those who fell in one of the bloodiest battles of World War 1. The concert at The Hawth on Saturday at 7.30 pm marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in World War One, in which men from Horsham district were among those from West Sussex fought in the Royal Sussex County regiment in appalling conditions. Concordia Singers and The Weald Choir will present Joseph Haydn’s Mass in Time of War and Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man. The concert also heralds the merger of the two choirs after more than four decades of friendly musical rivalry to form the Phoenix Choir of Crawley. Both choirs have enjoyed great success but the thought of the sound that could be achieved with a single, much bigger, choir of more than 80 voices has now proved irresistible. This will be demonstrated at the concert, which is in two parts War and Peace.

The first half is devoted to Mass in Time of War - one of the most popular of Joseph Haydn’s 14 settings of the Mass – which was written in 1796 at the time Napoleon was threatening Vienna. The guest conductor will be Neil Jenkins. After the interval, Concordia Singers’ musical director Ian Assersohn will conduct the The Armed Man, which is subtitled A Mass for Peace. It was commissioned by the Royal Armouries for the Millennium celebrations and dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis. The choirs will be accompanied by the Festival Sinfonia and professional soloists Lucy Knight (soprano), Janet Shell (alto), Paul Austin Kelly (tenor), and Njabulo Madlala (baritone). Financial support from West Sussex County Council’s Community Initiative Fund and Crawley Arts Council enables the choirs to bring London quality professionals to the people of Crawley at affordable prices. Tickets for the June 18 concert, priced at £16 adult and £8 child,

are available from choir members or through The Hawth Box Office. At the end of the concert there will be a collection in aid of Help for Heroes, the charity which provides direct, practical support for wounded, injured and sick veterans, servicemen and women and their loved ones. Plans are already underway for the Phoenix Choir’s first season. Rehearsals will take place at Holy Trinity School, Buckswood Drive, Gossops Green, RH11 8JE, from 7.45pm to 9.45pm every Thursday starting on 8th September. New members would be made very welcome and anyone interested should call 0779 0863 229 or email newchoir2@talktalk.co.uk. The autumn concert, Haydn’s Creation, which will be sung in English, will take place in November under the baton of the choir’s newly appointed Music Director Sam Hayes.

X Factor star comes to The Capitol Multi-Platinum selling winner of The X Factor, West End star and master singer songwriter Matt Cardle, this weekend, at The Capitol, Horsham This month sees the launch of Matt Cardle’s sensational UK-wide tour: ‘Intimate & Live’. The talented singer songwriter adds an extra dimension to the term ‘household name’. As the resounding winner of The X Factor’s highest rating series, his breathtaking, four octave, vocal range stunned millions of people in homes across the UK. Having since sold over 2 million records in the UK and seen all three of his albums reach the top 10, Matt could easily have been content with the achievements of a lifetime. But since his spectacular introduction to the UK charts in 2010, he has tirelessly sought out new and impressive avenues through which to exercise his vocal and song-writing talent. In addition to his acclaimed output as a solo artist, Matt has shown a keen intuition for collaboration: from his top 10

hit ‘Loving You’ with pop royalty Melanie C, to his more recent live performances with double MOBO award winning Saxophonist YolanDa Brown. Perhaps the most unique among his recent achievements is his 2015 award for ‘Best

won for his showstopping stage performance alongside Beverly Knight in the acclaimed West End production, Memphis. As this impressive inventory suggests, one of the key factors of

Matt’s enduring appeal is

With 16 dates, Matt will give audiences an intimate and exclusive insight into the various aspects and inspirations of his musical life. A powerful performer who commanded a crowd of 2 billion in Bali back in 2013, on this tour Matt will sing for closer, cosier crowds, but with no less passion and intensity. Alongside hits from his previous albums and some personally selected covers, Matt will also be previewing some of the outstanding new material from his forthcoming studio album, ‘Higher Power’ for the first time. Samantha Barks at The Capitol

After rising to fame as a contestant on BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, in 2008, Samantha Barks has wowed fans and critics alike, with her stunning voice and captivating performances in film, theatre and television. She has since undertaken starring roles in the UK touring productions of Cabaret and Oliver! It was her performance as Éponine in the West End production of Les Misérables, however, that led to her first movie credit, reprising the role in Tom Hooper’s Oscar winning adaptation. Showered with critical acclaim, she was nominated for a prestigious Screen Actors Guild Award and announced as Empire Magazine’s

Best Female Newcomer. Following the completion of parts in upcoming feature films, Bitter Harvest and Christmas Candle, we now see the star return to music. Taking inspiration from her roots in musical theatre, whilst incorporating modern influences, Samantha heads out on her first solo tour, to coincide with the highly anticipated release of

her new album . Performance: June 18, 8pm. Tickets: £22.50 Concessions/Friends £21.50, available online: www.thecapitolhorsham. com or via The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

SAMANTHA BARKS Saturday 18 June 8pm

Escape from the planet of the Day That Time Forgot

They’re back! Well Gavin Robertson is (‘Bond - An Unauthorised Parody’) and so is Kat Hurst (‘Mata Hari- Female Spy’). Together onstage for the first time ever, with another bloke called Simon.

There’s a Professor with a rocket in the cellar, his female ward who screams quite often, and an impoverished lab assistant (the lucky chap!) and together they find themselves on a distant planet,

before escaping to...where exactly!? Think a hotch-potch of silliness, drawing from ‘The 39 Steps’ and ‘Quatermass’, via ‘Journey to the Centre of The Earth’, and ‘The Land that Time Forgot’... danger, dinosaurs and a whole pile of pluck, along with an invisible dog and several sets of ‘jolly hockey sticks’. These award-winning performers combine fast storytelling with bold imagery and jokes a-plenty, as they transport you from stately English home to the steaming jungle and back again, in a frantic, time travelling, outrageous adventure! Join in the adventure at The Capitol, Horsham on 24 June 24 at 8pm Tickets: £16 Concessions/Friends £14, available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

THE BEE GEES STORY: NIGHTS ON BROADWAY Thursday 23 June 7.30pm

‘If you go down to the woods today’ Mischief and magic combine at The Capitol this summer, when award winning local company, HAODS, celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a lively new production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in the main theatre. Shakespeare’s best loved comedy tells the story of four runaway lovers, who find themselves right in the middle of an argument between the King and Queen of the fairies! At the same time, a troupe of, not so professional, actors are trying to rehearse a play in honour King Theseus’ Wedding...and between the groups, struts a mischievous fairy henchman, carrying a love potion capable of making anyone fall in love with the first person they see. What could possibly go wrong?? Featuring original music, bespoke set and costumes, as well as a full cast of adults and juniors, HAODS’ first Shakespeare promises a little midsummer magic for all. Join them in the woods between August 10 and 13, and book today, online: www.thecapitolhorsham. com, or via The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

Southwater Juniors to represent Horsham at Eastbourne Junior Tennis Southwater Junior Academy will be representing Horsham schools in the final of the Road to Eastbourne championship at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park on June 18. A team of 4 boys and 4 girls from Southwater Junior Academy competed in the second stage of the championship at Holbrook Tennis Club against

teams from Plaistow and Kirdford and Holbrook. The three teams competed in several relay races, with each team winning their fair share of the contests. The teams then split up into smaller teams, with half of each team playing in individual matches, and the other half competing in skill challenges. Southwater managed to come out on top in 6 out of 8 of their individual matches, and won the

majority of the skill challenges which saw them crowned as the Horsham Schools Champions for the third year in a row. They now look forward to representing Horsham Schools and going up against the other district champions from all over Sussex when they will be determined to retain their Road to Eastbourne Championship that they won for the first time last year.

The temperature rises at Pulborough Bowls Club Despite suffering a defeat Pulborough’s good form continues

Billingshurst pair through in county championships Bowls Keith Barraclough - Billingshurst BC

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC The positive results just keep coming for Pulborough Bowls Club; starting when Pulborough hosted the Maltravers team from Littlehampton. 4 triples played 18 ends of quality bowls against tough opposition. Mick Ralph and team were held to a 12 all draw on rink 3, John Brown and team scored consistently to finish 17/13 ahead and Len Adsett’s team managed 17/11, with some heavy scoring in the first 11 ends. Top rink went to skip, Alan Jordan, lead, Pauline Adsett and number 2 Mick Ayling, after winning 12 of the 18 ends to finish on a fantastic

score of 21/7. For the first time this season, Pulborough had a tough game in the WSBL against top team, Worthing Pavillion, with the game not going Pulborough’s way. The final fixture of the week was away against Bognor BC. 4 rinks played the full 21 ends, after the rain cleared to produce a stunning afternoon of bowls. Bognor didn’t have the best of days, with losses on all 4 rinks, despite their best efforts, but this didn’t dampen their spirits and the game was thoroughly enjoyed by both teams. The Pulborough scores were mostly in the 20’s, but a special mention must again go to skip, Alan Jordan, number 1, Melvin Green, number

2, Len Hall and number 3, Mick Ayling, who won 15 ends, with a 7 on end 16, to finish on an astonishing score of 40/7, one of the best this season. The Pulborough pairing of Mark Lancaster and Paul Day are through to the next round of the County pairs, after winning against M.Gardiner and T.Horner from Worthing Pavillion, 22/8, an excellent result. The next week sees league games against Goring Manor Hurricanes and Tarring Priory in the WSBL and Crablands in the BML, alongside friendlies away against Ewhurst and a charity fundraiser against Pulborough Sports and Social Club.

The Billingshurst home rinks of June Bennett, Beryl Barraclough & Geoff Weller lost 16-26 and Roy Staveley, Marion Clark & John Bennett lost 12-15.

Billingshurst away links of John Lucas, Stan Morgan & Alan Readshaw lost 8-21and Ray Neal, Betty Weller & Alan Knight won 17-14. Hockley from Adastra (Hassocks). The home pair struggled until a late count of 6 put them back in the game. With the scores level at 20-20 the host pair took shot on the last end to win by 1. Drawn at home again in the 2nd round of the pairs, John Bennett and Barry Gilbert played L. Finnimore and M. Simmonds from Burgess Hill. The host pair made a steady start but dropped a 4 on end 12. John and Barry caught up to level the game at 17 all going in to the final end. Shot on end 21 went to the home pair to give them another “cliff hanging” win by 1 shot. In the next round the Billingshurst pair will play away at Crawley Town. Alan Readshaw and Ray Neal, playing at Horsham, came up against Neil Potter and partner. ley as Millais are currently the top rounders school in the North/Mid Sussex schools zone. A preliminary round decided which teams went into the A event and which others went into the B side of the day and with so many tight games all credit goes to the young Millais umpires who did a fantastic job throughout the day. The final positions in the A group were: 1st Shelley, 2nd Southwater A, 3rd Southwater B, 4th Leechpool A, 5th Heron Way, 6th Holbrook, 7th Leechpool B and 8th Castlewood. The B group finished: 1st North Heath A, 2nd Billingshurst, 3rd North Heath B, 4th Leechpool C, 5th Greenway A, 6th Northolmes, 7th St Robert Southwell and 8th Greenway B.

Two tons and Munday boost Horsham’s lead Horsham’s Craig Gallgher is having a good season with the bat

Photo by John Lines Saturday June 11 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 291-3 dec (49 overs) Worthing 154 All Out (38.3 overs) Horsham won by 137 runs

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham won the toss, posted a killer score, declared to give themselves extra overs to bowl out Worthing, then Michael Munday delivered another strong win, giving Horsham a 31 point lead at the top of the table over Preston Nomads, whose Sunday game against the Sussex Development XI was abandoned. Horsham’s batting, unpredictable in recent seasons, has been significantly uplifted this term by the return of Michael Thornely and the signing of Joe Ludlow – and the excellent form of both Craig Gallagher and James Johnson. Horsham hit the ground running in the first game of the season, when, in the National Knockout Cup at Sutton, they put up a 207 run opening partnership. At Worthing they were even more productive with 233 for the first wicket, Ludlow scoring 111 and Gallagher 113, each facing 119 balls and hitting 34 fours and a six between them, enabling Horsham to give themselves 61 overs to bowl out the opposition. Jamie Thornely took two early wickets and although five

Worthing batsmen got off to good starts, four getting into the twenties and Josh Wood reaching 32, Munday was again far too difficult to handle ending with 6-54, from 15.3 overs, Worthing swiftly subsiding to a 137 run defeat from the apparent safety of 72-2. Munday’s haul included four LBW’s and an outstanding Jamie Thornely catch. With his league tally increased to 27 scalps the demon leg spinner told the District Post: “It was a big turning wicket, I bowled at the stumps – sometimes a bit quicker - and they played late!” Former captain Craig Gallagher, the leading league run scorer in 2010, said: “I used to open the batting and I’m really enjoying that opportunity again. I’ve got a good bat and am feeling confident. It’s a great experience!” Skipper James Johnson summed up the buoyant mood in the Horsham camp saying: “We’re playing well so we don’t need to worry about any other results at the moment – all we’ve got to do is to keep winning!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham return home to play struggling Billingshurst, keen to avenge two shock defeats at the hands of last year’s newcomers to the league.

Saturday June 11 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 271-5 (58 overs) Bexhill 148 All Out (42.4 overs) Roffey won by 123 runs

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey jump to fourth after returning to winning ways with an impressive defeat of visitors Bexhill. Josh Fleming and Theo Rivers (49) created a useful platform before George Fleming contributed a well-constructed 56. Then Rohit Jagota made a typically forthright 78 not out, containing 8 fours and 5 sixes, plundering flagging bowlers in an unbeaten 114 run sixth wicket partnership with

skipper Matt Davies, whose 50 included 5 fours and 4 sixes, clearing the trees bordering Northolmes School. Roffey benefited from some shoddy ground work and counterproductive tactics of negative bowling and defensive field placings, seven men on the boundary opening up numerous opportunities for ones and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking over. With the wicket dry and turning, around 240 was a par score and Hastings reached 74-1 despite consternation caused when thunderous deliveries from Sussex’s Stuart Whittingham extracting puffs of dust. The turning point came with Jagota’s first ball, which kept low to trap opener Malcolm Johnson (50) leg before. A smart Jagota run out, a Davies stumping and two county class catches from Leigh Harrison whittled Bexhill away – needing points they kept attacking but fell to the wiles of Luke Barnard (4-56) and George Fleming (2-28), the pair regularly beating the bat. Harrison, Whittingham and Jagota shared the remaining spoils. Barnard told the District Post: “They started off reasonably well but once we got rid of Malcolm Johnson it was a different story.” Matt Davies summed up with: “That was a great win – it was about time we put in a good all round performance and hopefully that’ll kick start our season!” This Saturday (tomorrow) Roffey visit Worthing. The seasiders are second from bottom with a single win from their seven matches.

Billingshurst slump to a heavy defeat Saturday June 11 - Sussex Premier League Hastings & St Leonards Priory 300-4 dec (52.4 overs) Billingshurst 131all out (39.4 overs) Hastings won by 169 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer had another disappointing weekend after again failing to finish when his car developed a water leak forcing his retirement on lap 17 of the Canadian Grand Prix. Starting from 16th on the grid Palmer had made a good start

before loss of water pressure meant the team had to retire his car. Palmer’s team mate Kevin Magnussen finished in sixteenth place after starting from the back of the grid. Palmer will be hoping for better luck at this weekend’s inaugural Azerbaijan Grand Prix, held on a new street circuit in the countries capital city of Baku.

After retiring Palmer said, “I was feeling good with the car out there even though it was cold and slippery. I received some contact from Carlos Sainz on the first lap then I was stuck behind one of the Manors early on, but once I was in clean air my pace felt good. I’m happy with the car so I’m looking forward to Baku. Certainly a little bit of luck wouldn’t go amiss too.”

Billingshurst’s trip to Hastings, now seventh, ended in another substantial defeat after the hosts won the toss and declared on reaching 300. Tom Gillespie made 108, Joshua Hahnel 75 and former Sussex signing Elliot Hooper an unbeaten 60. Ben Williams took 2-79 and Andy Barr and Shane West one apiece.

Replying, Captain Stuart Barber top-scored with 38 and Scott Stratton reached 32 but five Billingshurst batsmen were unable to score as 74-3 deteriorated to 114-6, the end coming with 17.2 overs to spare. The productive Jed O’Brien was the destroyer in chief with 5-16, Bradley Payne and Hooper taking two wickets each. On Saturday (tomorrow) Billingshurst - now marooned at the foot of the table 38 points behind relegation threatened Worthing and still seeking a first win - have a tough away assignment against high flying Horsham, whom they beat in both league encounters last year.
