Isobel has a way with words Great value golf, open for all. That’s the Rookwood mantra A young student impressed VIPs with her speech at her school’s awards ceremony. The honour fell to head pupil Isobel Pelling, official school title Senior Grecian, when dignitaries from the City of London visited Christ’s Hospital school at Horsham for its speech day. The school welcomed Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman the Lord Mountevans and the Mayoral party who joined more than 800 guests for the annual ceremonial occasion. Alderman the Lord Mountevans presented prizes and awards to senior pupils, recognising academic achievement, leadership, international relations, outward bound activities and creative writing. He also gave a response to Isobel’s oration. Earlier in the day visitors had to

dodge the showers as they watched the March Past by the School’s 880 pupils to the accompaniment of the band. Head Master John Franklin said: “At the Prize Giving ceremony in the afternoon, the highlight was the oration given by the Senior Grecian Isobel Pelling and the response of The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor to Isobel’s speech.” The Lady Mayoress was presented with a posy of flowers. The day finished with a buffet lunch and an opportunity for visitors to see the Year 13 ‘Grecians’ Art Exhibition. When Christ’s Hospital was founded in 1552, it was the Lord Mayor of the day, Sir Richard Dobbs, who gathered a committee of thirty to raise money following Edward VI’s move to establish Christ’s Hospital in London to house, feed and educate

Rookwood Golf Course has been part of the beautiful Horsham landscape for many years, with its mature 18 hole golf course just 5 minutes from town and next to Warnham Nature Reserve. Better still, it’s open to everyone to enjoy. District Post readers may have driven parallel to the course regularly, along the A24, yet been unaware of its presence due to the way it blends subtly into the surrounding Sussex countryside. This beautiful little gem of a Golf Course is open access golf for all ages and abilities, with a mix of gently undulating parkland and mature woodland, the par 72 course measures 6,200 yards. Strategically positioned bunkers and a number of large lakes creates a course that presents an enjoyable challenge to both experienced player and novice alike. With value being close to our hearts, we are delighted to introduce our Green Fee Summer Special, featuring a round of golf for just £15.00 per person*. During July and August you can enjoy 18 holes of golf with the convenience of being close to home yet experiencing a mature course.

Can’t wait until July? Rookwood is also home to one of the fastest growing new sports – FootGolf. You’ve shot people in paint-balling, raced people in karting and hit back-to-back strikes in ten-pin bowling. But if you’re looking for something a bit different to try with the family or friends we have the entertaining solution! You don’t have to be a golfer or a footballer to enjoy it, there are no stuffy dress-codes, all we ask is that you do wear clothing! You don’t even need special golf shoes – just a sturdy pair of trainers will do fine. Then you’re all set to get kicking! Once you’ve finished your round, we invite you to pop into the 17th century Warnham Barn, with it’s spectacular oak beams and high ceilings, tastefully restored to provide a Lounge Bar full of character and charm. The perfect place to soak up some sunshine, enjoy a refreshing drink and have a bite to eat. Post readers asked to help trace lost war hero Robert’s grave

Robert’s glider crashed

Post readers are being invited to help a relative trace details of a soldier killed in a glider crash at the battle of Arnhem. Royal Army Service Corps driver Robert Claude Bondy was the husband of Ivey Elizabeth Bondy, of Billinghurst, and the son of Charles and Florence Bondy. Robert died at 35 on 17 September 1944 as thousands of Allied troops perished in the courageous but disastrous Operation Market Garden in Holland. He is buried in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands. Robert was born in London and in 1911 he had eight brothers and sisters, named Henry, Pauline, Joseph, Edward, Edna, Percy, Charles and George. According to the Roll of Honour published by the Society of Friends of the Airborne Museum Robert was killed when the glider he was in crashed north west of Wolfheze. It is thought local Dutch people buried him nearby, until the war memorial was

completed after the war ended. His name is mentioned at the war memorial in the village of Billingshurst. Philip Reinders, from the Netherlands, who has no picture of Robert, said: “I am trying to trace relative and next of kin of the Robert, a soldier who was killed in Holland in September 1944, during the so called Battle of Arnhem. I wonder if any Post readers might be able to help me out with this.” The battle was fought between British and Polish troops and the Germans from September 17-26 in 1944, using hundreds of airborne troops. The glider pilots required great skill and courage and it was a credit to them that more gliders did not crash. The battle, a daring but highly dangerous mission, ended in failure for the Allied troops, with about 3,000 being killed and about 7,000 being captured. The battle was fought in and around the Dutch towns of Arnhem, Oosterbeek, Wolfheze and

Driel. Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery aimed a single push of troops north over the branches of the Lower Rhine River. Airborne troops such as Robert were dropped in the Netherlands to secure key bridges and towns along the advance. In the north, the British 1st Airborne Division, supported by men of the Glider Pilot Regiment and the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade, landed at Arnhem to secure bridges across the Nederrijn. Optimistically predicting easy progress and a vital quick link-up with the airborne forces instead the ground troops landed too far from objectives and were pinned down by unexpectedly strong resistance from crack Panzer Divisions of the Germany army. The Allies were unable to advance further and the battle was lost despite the immense courage of the Allied troops. Award for caring Sarah A Sussex Police mental health liaison officer was recognised in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours. Sarah Gates has been awarded an OBE for services to those suffering from mental ill health. Sarah has worked for the force for ten years and been at the forefront in delivering programmes such as placing nurses to work in police custody, street triage, provision of places of safety and the review of the Mental Health Codes of Practice. Chief Superintendent Diane Roskilly was one of the officers who nominated her and said: “Sarah has worked tirelessly to improve the experience of people who come into contact with the police or criminal justice system and are suffering with mental health. “Through her sheer determination, drive and interpersonal skills, she has driven a cultural change, improving how we and our partners work together. “Nothing is ever too much for Sarah and through her positive approach she has made a real difference to people’s lives. It is a privilege and joy to work with her.”

Chief Constable Giles York said: “All the force will support this recognition for an individual who has gone above and beyond to make the experiences for those suffering mental health crises significantly better. Huge congratulations to Sarah Gates, OBE.” On hearing that she had been awarded the OBE, Sarah, who works at Crawley, said that she felt stunned: “I had absolutely no idea I had been nominated so I was utterly shocked when I received a letter from the Cabinet Office informing me of the honour. I am completely overwhelmed and totally delighted. “Receiving this honour means everything to me, but it also means that we can be proud of what we have achieved in Sussex Police and how far we have come in terms of partnership. “I am proud to work with colleagues who also support the mental health agenda and who I hold in the highest esteem. For them to want to nominate me and think I’m doing an ok job means even more to me. I am truly grateful to them all.”

Elephant jewellery could Mr Wildlife the nightingale lover bows out lead to trail for burglar Mr Wildlife Mike Russell

An elephant-themed necklace could lead police to a burglar who struck at a home in the countryside. Police have appealed to dealers or collectors to recall if anything of doubtful origin has been offered to them after the theft at Church Lane, Twineham. They are also hoping that people living, visiting or working in the area might recall hearing a burglar alarm or have noticed something suspicious that afternoon. A householder had gone out leaving the property secure, but before she returned later the same day an intruder broke in, made an untidy search and stole three jewellery boxes and their contents. An alarm was triggered shortly before 4pm but was switched off by a well-meaning neighbour who noticed nothing unusual on going into the house. There is a suspicion the thief may have hidden elsewhere inside the premises. Detective Constable Jon Stadius, of the Bognor Regis Priority Crime Team, has been investigating the incident, which happened on May 26. Police last

week issued an appeal for information and DC Stadius said: “ I’m aware time has passed since the burglary occurred, but it may just be that someone recalls something that may help us fit a key piece into the jigsaw. “I’d certainly urge anyone who may have information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.” The driver of a black or dark blue Volkswagen Golf car, driven by a man and seen in Twineham Lane at the time may, for instance, be able to assist. And any dealers or collectors recently offered jewellery of dubious provenance are also asked to get in touch. Among the items stolen was a distinctive ivory necklace bearing small carved elephants, placed one on top of the other, and with a tear drop pendant, also depicting an elephant. Anyone with information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn. police.ukor phone 101, quoting serial 1497 of 26/05. Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).

A man known as Mr Wildlife is retiring after more than 30 years with the Henfield-based Sussex Wildlife Trust. The charity describes Mike Russell as one of its most charismatic and loved members of staff. He joined the Sussex Wildlife Trust

in 1985 as warden and lived with his wife, Pauline and two sons, Liam and Niall at Woods Mill nature reserve, the house has since been converted into offices for staff working for the registered charity, the largest nature conservation organisation in Sussex.

Mike, who retires at the end of this month, has countless memories of ‘special’ wildlife moments. But says his life is inextricably linked to the nightingale, a migrant that flies 3,000 miles each year from West Africa to the South of England to find a mate and breed before making the perilous return journey. The charity says Mike’s Evening with Nightingales events are legendary and sell out every year. During the past 31 years Mike has worked as nature reserve warden, led the Trust’s Education team and developed their People and Wildlife department. He has organised and led thousands of nature based events from 4 am dawn choruses to late night excursions onto heathland reserves to introduce people to the haunting sights and sounds of the nightjar. Mike, from Henfield said: “Over the past few years I have returned to perhaps what I enjoy most, organising our adult education programmes and particularly teaching. I find it rewarding to be able to show and inspire people about the wonderful landscapes and wildlife to be found in Sussex. “Retirement beckons and although I will continue to lead some courses at Woods Mill nature reserve at Henfield and throughout Sussex in the future, I will undoubtedly miss my day to day involvement with the Sussex Wildlife Trust which has been such a huge part of my life.’

Commuter using social media in train protest A rail traveller is using a social media site to log problems caused by the long-running guards’ dispute on Southern trains. With talks on the dispute at arbitration service ACAS seeming to be deadlocked Russell Parker, a self employed City worker wants to draw the wider community in by inviting them to comment on the hashtag #todayImissed on Twitter at peak times. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union has been hoping to resolve the dispute in meetings with Govia Thameslink Railway. They disagree over the role of conductors on trains, but meanwhile passengers have been suffering from disruption to services. The union says its three key points of complaints are the removal of conductors from trains and safety. The train bosses say there will be as many staff on trains as there are at present, but they will be employed as what is called “on-board supervisors”. Another strike was staged on Tuesday, disrupting travel plans for thousands of travellers, including those on the Dorking-Horsham

line. Russsell said: “We are aiming to engage the wider community and get action taken given the detriment to the lives of residents of the region. We think that rather than going down the line of venting or an-

cebook discussion group for those with an interest. Naturally we’ll seek to consolidate the strength of existing campaigns.” Frustrated Horsham resident Stephen Brown has asked Horsham MP Jeremy Quin to help resolve the issue. He said: “During an enforced wait at Three Bridges station due to “staff shortages” I spoke to a member of staff at the station about the situation and he confirmed that Southern had stopped overtime for both drivers and guards. “Unfortunately, as we both know, there are not enough staff in normal circumstances for a full service to run without overtime. Therefore this situation is a direct and forseeable result of the policy of the Southern Rail management. They need to be tackled on the point directly and publicly, especially as station staff are being subjected to a lot of abuse about something over which they have no control and for which they are not responsible for by angry travellers who are not fully aware of the situation.”

Youngsters spell out stark crime message The stark realities of crime are described first-hand by young people convicted of crimes in West Sussex in a new series of video blogs, known as vlogs. One youngster said: “I had never seen my dad cry until that day and that will scar me for the rest of my life.” The animated vlogs have been made to help young people understand why they have got into trouble, what needs to change so they do not get into trouble again and help them to put things right with those affected by crime. The vlogs were produced by the young peoples’ blog, Your Space and the County Council’s Youth Offending Service, which works with young people aged 10-17 to prevent and reduce youth crime. The current vlogs look at: • First offence • What is it like to get arrested? • Being in a jail cell, in court and getting sentenced • What is reparation? In one of the vlogs, a young person describes the tedious experience of being in a police cell before

an intimidating experience of being questioned by the police and finally appearing in court. He said: “Being in court, that’s the hardest thing - they were asking all these questions. You would think you had already been

through enough emotional up and down but when your family is in the court with you and you then look over your shoulder to see how your parents are reacting… I’ll be honest, I would have rather been dead than go through that again. “I had never seen my dad cry until that day and that will scar me for the rest of my life. I felt bad because I had to put my parents through that. That day I have to say is one of the most hectic days of my life.” The vlogs provide first-hand information about what it was like

facing up to the consequences of a crime. Stephen Hillier, Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “By bravely talking about what happened to them and how they felt, these young offenders are playing a vital role in the future of West Sussex by offering their time to prevent others from making the same mistakes. “I hope that young people will

watch these vlogs and consider the paths that they take. They show remorse and regret for their crimes which hopefully will make others think twice.” The youth offending vlog series will continue with more vlogs being added in the future. To view the vlogs visit www. yourspacewestsussex.me/portfolio/youth-offending-service, or to contact the Youth Offending Team email youthoffendingteam@ westsussex.gov.uk.

Warning about teething bracelets Cheap ‘teething bracelets’ made of amber pose a serious risk to babies and toddlers warn Trading Standards experts. The amber products are being sold as necklaces, bracelets and anklets, often with claims of calming and soothing teething children. West Sussex Trading Standards officers tested a teething bracelet and found the items were a choking hazard, the elastic on all the items broke easily and the individual amber beads also pose a choking hazard. Peter Aston, Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “Through our testing we found that these items could be a real choking hazard because they could potentially be caught in a child’s throat. “We are in the process of approaching the main internet retail-

ers to remove these items from sale as they are incredibly unsafe for young children.” Two sellers in West Sussex are being investigated for their supply. Both have now stopped selling the products.

If you need to calm or sooth a teething child please seek the advice of your GP David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Parents and guardians must not leave their child unattended with

an amber product, regardless of whether it is a bracelet, necklace or an anklet, as they are potentially very dangerous. “If you need to calm or sooth a teething child please seek the advice of your GP or health visitor.” The warning comes during ‘Child Safety Week’, organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust. The theme of Child Safety Week this year is ‘turn off technology’, focusing on what children may be doing while parents are distracted by their smartphones. If you find any of these products available in the county that are aimed at or are only able to be worn by children, let Trading Standards know via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506 or online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport.

Residents asked: “Did bus stop closures work?” Residents are being asked if bus stop closures on busy main roads have worked. Temporary bus stop suspensions have been running on the A24, A264 and A259.Residents can comment on whether the changes have been good or bad via an online consultation. The deadline to take part is July 6. In April West Sussex County Council temporarily suspended all stops on the A24 between Findon and Horsham and the A264 between Horsham and Crawley where buses were forced to stop on the inside lane. Two stops on the A259 that operated in a similar way were also temporarily suspended. A safety review found that given today’s traffic conditions, these bus stops were a road safety risk. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport John O’Brien said: “We need to know the views of passengers and local communities so we can understand the impact of suspending these bus stops.“The results will be used to determine what, if any, measures should be considered to resolve any issues or concerns the survey identifies.“If you are affected by these changes, please take part.” You can take part in the survey here.

The stops and services affected are: A24 between Findon and Washington: Worthing Crematorium (northbound), North End/Worthing Crematorium (southbound), North End (northbound), North Farm (northbound) North Farm (southbound), Windlesham House School (northbound) A24 between Washington and Buckbarn: Washington Roundabout (northbound), Washington Roundabout (southbound), Rock Road (northbound), Spring Gardens (southbound), Old Barn Nursery (northbound)A264 between Horsham and Crawley: The Cherry Tree (eastbound), Park Road (eastbound), Holmbush Farm (eastbound)A259 Merston: Kings Head Green Lane (northbound)A259 Ferring: Langbury Lane (eastbound) Other bus stops on the A24, A264 and A259, where buses are able to pull over into lay-bys or slip roads have not been affected and continue to operate as normal. In addition, Stagecoach’s No.1 route that previously started at Findon will serve the ‘flyover’ at Highden Bridge from June 26. This is to partly replace the suspended stops on the A24 at North Farm and is for travel towards Findon and Worthing only.

Poster warning over traffic danger Pupils at Heron Way Primary School in Horsham are hoping a new series of posters they created will improve safety on the roads around their school. And they say they need a safe crossing point to be provided. The signs are based around a new school travel pledge agreed upon by staff, pupils and parents. Head Teacher James Crump hopes the posters will encourage drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to make road safety a top priority. Mr Crump said: “The school is increasing in size over the next few years and with more pupils comes more traffic. The children have come up with some brilliant designs that we hope will remind everyone who comes to the school that safety of the children in the surrounding roads is of paramount importance. We hope more people will park away from the school to reduce the traffic, but what we really need are safe routes for our children to walk to school and to that end we are in dialogue with West Sussex County Council about putting a pedestrian crossing on St Leonards Road”. Chair of the Heron Way PTA Claire Tyler, who helped organise the competition said: “What we really need is a safe crossing point on St Leonards or Comptons Road. Lots of parents end up driving to school because there are no safe routes to walk or scoot. With the increase in housing throughout

Showing off posters

Horsham the traffic on this road will only get worse. It’s incredible that there are four schools that straddle this road, ourselves, Millias, Forest and the QEII school, with pupils crossing both

ways in the morning and evening but not one single pedestrian crossing. We have been in contact with the local council and are awaiting news of their initial assessment”.

Putting the fun into maths

Maths can add up to enjoyment, pupils at a Horsham school discovered. Farlington Prep School pupils spent a Maths Day solving puzzles and taking part in activities to show that maths is not just sums. The theme for the day was ‘Squares’ and Nursery children used brightly coloured squares to design pictures whilst reception girls looked at symmetry and pattern. Year 1 took a look at Mondrian and his mathemati-

cal approach to art and Year 2 worked on Chinese tangram puzzles. Structures from squares was the challenge for Year 3 and some tall towers were built in their classroom. Year 4 investigated square numbers and Year 5 solved Sudoku puzzles and played human noughts and crosses. Year 6 found out how many squares are on a chessboard – not 64 as some might think. The school says that whole day was a huge success and the

NHS film shot in Horsham wins award An NHS campaign film shot in Horsham featuring comedian Dom Joly has won a national award for its impact across the country. The ‘not QUITE an emergency’ campaign, designed to promote awareness of the free 24-hour NHS 111 helpline, won the communications category at the ‘Oscars of the Healthcare Industry’ - the Health Service Journal Value Awards in Manchester. The campaign saw the local NHS clinical commissioning groups team up to use ‘pranking’ for the first time to share a serious message with a millennial, under 35, audience. It has since been adopted by more than 30 hospitals, ambulance services and NHS clinical commissioning groups across the country. It has also generated media coverage with an audience reach of 40 million people, including the broadcast of Dom Joly interviews in 15 radio and TV regions, and over 140,000 views on social media. Shot in Horsham, Crawley and Brighton, the campaign film shows a heavily disguised Dom Joly blighted by various minor ailments that he refuses to accept aren’t worthy of being a medical emergency. Hidden cameras capture him seeking support from unsuspecting

children were really enthusiastic about it all, showing that maths at Farlington is not all about tests and number crunching. Sara Povey, Deputy Head of Prep School, who organised the day, said: “At Farlington we believe that Maths is a wonderfully rich subject. Success is all to do with having the confidence to ‘have a go’ and we used our activities to enthuse our pupils and show them that Maths is challenging, but very enjoyable, too.”

members of the public, before pretend paramedics arrive on the scene and NHS staff dressed as giant blue 1s appear walking about in the background. The HSJ Value Awards Judging panel said: “The HSJ Value Awards judges were unanimous in their decision to award the ‘not QUITE an emergency’ campaign winner of this year’s Value in Communications category. The campaign was a stunning achievement, provided huge value for the NHS, is innovative, hugely creative and shows big things can be done on a modest budget.” Dr Minesh Patel, Clinical Chair of Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG said: “We are proud and delighted that this innovative film has picked up an award. The serious message behind it is that patients with minor conditions have a real choice about their care. The NHS 111 helpline can refer people on to alternative services including Minor Injuries Units at Horsham Hospital and Queen Victoria Hospital, the Urgent Treatment Centre at Crawley Hospital, as well as pharmacies and out-of-hours GP services.” To watch the two minute video, search ‘Crawley CCG’ on YouTube or key in this direct link into your browser: bit.ly/1Qi3jxC.

Letter gives insight to the birth of gothic horror Disgusted of Geneva – unique Horsham letter tells of Byron’s arrival that gave birth to gothic horror Housed in Horsham Museum is a unique letter written on 6 June 1816, which describes the disgust that an English gentleman had of finding Byron and his friends, the poet Shelley and his teenage girlfriend Mary, arriving in Geneva. It was after a dinner party held by Byron in June 200 years ago that Mary would dream the creation of Dr Frankenstein and his monster, and Byron’s Doctor, Polidori, would create the vampire genre. As a result, 1816 is known as ‘the year horror was born’. This amazing letter was bought some 18 years ago by the Friends of Horsham Museum from top London book dealers Jarndyce, as part of the Museums internationally renowned Shelley collection.

Lara’s kettle is a winner

Student Lara Smith’s modern kettle for older people is the judges’ cup of tea. Her modern, stylish and inclusive creation won this year’s ‘Designing for the Future Competition’ at Collyer’s college in Horsham. Designing for the Future, run by Horsham based The Future Perfect Company, encourages student designers to think about the challenges affecting our ageing population – and to create innovative and attractive designs which allow older people to continue to live meaningful, enjoyable, active and independent lives. A-level student Lara designed the “Metamo Kettle” for people with stability issues, featuring a tipping function and a special pouring mechanism. The Designing for the Future judges were impressed with the multisensory and inclusive design. Joint second prize went to Collyer’s Guy Mannion and Jacob Hamilton. Guy designed a toothbrush designed for people with arthritis while Jacob created a beautiful docking station with phone charging and storage function. Aston Beagle, Holly Silvester, Andrew Gardner were Highly Commended. Their designs included a universal prosthetic foot, multi tool for kitchen and bathroom and an ac-

cessory for keys. The winners receive cash prizes and all the entrants will be invited to join the Designing for the Future network which supports and promotes alumni from the project. Kate Sharp, Faculty Head for Arts and Communication at Collyer’s said: “I think this year saw the best entries yet – all were highly marketable products and all were 100% fit for purpose. The final design proposals and prototypes were highly desirable items that would appeal to a much wider audience than just the target groups. I was really impressed that the aesthetic qualities in each design made for truly inclusive products. “The presentations the students gave at each design stage and to the final judging panel were impressive, not only with the quality of their work, but also their assured confidence. This real world experience is a fantastic opportunity for our learners and I look forward to next year’s competition.” Judges included Philippa Aldrich and Molly Aldrich-Wincer from The Future PerfectCompany and Marie Harris from Beta Futures. Philippa Aldrich, founder of The Future Perfect Company, conceived the Designing for the Future Competition seven years ago as a response to thelack of attractive, innovative

products designed for older people and it has since become atouchstone for debate about ageing and design. The competition is run at Collyer’s and theUniversity of Brighton. Work from the project has been showcased at various public and academicroadshows and conferences including the Age UK national policy conference and the Mobility Roadshow. Pictured are left to right Kate Sharp, Lara Smith, Guy Mannion, Holly Sylvester, Andrew Gardner, Jacob Hamilton, Philippa Aldrich of The Future Perfect Company Aston Beagle and Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley. It gives a fascinating and revealing insight into what Geneva was like for English émigrés and why Byron would rent a villa there. The letter, written by someone who signs himself ‘J.S.’, describes the literary and intellectual colony that had established itself around Lake Geneva, writing amongst other things that ‘There are 3 or 4 Societies, medical, physical, agricultural, etc. where they regularly meet, and to which strangers are admitted with great facility, and treated with great kindness.” However it is the following comment about the questionable nature of Lord Byron and his choice of friends that makes the letter particularly interesting: “Our English Colony thrives apace, and every Country House on this side of the lake is taken. Lord Euston and his friend Mary are here, but our late great Arrival is Lord Byron, with the Actress and another family of very suspicious appearance. How many he has at his disposal out of the whole set I know not, but different houses have been taken for both establishments. “ They very nearly drowned the other day, which may furnish an interesting episode in a poem on Switzerland, or an address to Lake Leman, or a farewell to Geneva. His Lordship was at Pictet’s the other evening, but made no impression. He was insolent and repulsive, and

his countenance is much disliked.” The suspicion that Byron might have enjoyed the favours of his guests is clear, with a strong hint of sexual scandal; yet, for future generations it would not be that which fascinated them, but the creation of the story by Mary of Frankenstein - or the Modern Prometheus. Having grown bored during a rather wet summer, Byron suggested that the guests should come up with ghost stories. Mary had difficulty creating one. To her dismay each day she was asked, until having discussed one evening the nature of life and re-animation, Mary imagined a story that, with her boyfriend/later husband’s help, would in 1818 become Frankenstein - a literary sensation. Amongst the Museum’s collections is the third edition of the story, published in 1831, and is the first edition to include a picture of Frankenstein’s monster without a bolt in his neck. The Museum also holds a first edition of Six Weeks Tour written by Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley, published in 1817, which recounts the tour of Europe completed by the couple in 1814 and includes material written in 1816. It is however the letter - that unique record written by a disgusted Englishman - which brings to life the culture of Geneva, a city which saw the birth of horror.

Sussex residents will get the chance to question the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner at a meeting next month. Questions are now being invited for Katy Bourne and the Sussex Police and Crime Panel before the meeting at 10.30am on July 4 at County Hall in Lewes. The panel comprises councillors from all 15 local authorities across Sussex, plus two independent members, and carries out the role of scrutinising the actions and decisions of the Commissioner. At the annual meeting the panel will scrutinise the Commissioner’s annual report. Members of the public can attend the meeting and ask questions in person or they can be submitted in advance by writing to pcp@ westsussex.gov.uk, or by telephoning 0330 2222538. The time set aside for residents to pose their questions in person is limited to 45 minutes, allocated on a firstcome-first-served basis, so giving advance notice of an intention to attend and participate is advised.

West Sussex County Councillor Brad Watson, the panel chairman, said: “The annual meeting is an excellent chance for members of the public to put their questions in person to the Commissioner. “It helps us if we can have questions in advance as this allows better responses to be prepared and ensures everyone gets the chance to ask their question. “People who want to ask a question but cannot make it to the meeting can still submit a question and it will be asked by the panel chairman, with the answer recorded in the official minutes of the meeting.” A confirmation hearing will be held during the afternoon session, to confirm the Commissioner’s proposed appointment of a new Chief Finance Officer. More details can be found on the panel’s website: www.westsussex. gov.uk/pcp in the “Get Involved” section. The meeting will be webcast live at www.eastsussex.public-i.tv/ core/portal/home

A top trainee welder was described as a “positive role model” when outstanding construction and engineering students were honoured at Central Sussex College’s Construction and Engineering Awards. Among the guests was the newly elected chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Christian Mitchell. Fabrication and welding student Jordan Toogood, 18, was awarded the Faculty of Construction and Engineering Prize for ‘Best Fulltime Learner in Welding and Fabrication Level 2’. His lecturers said: “Throughout this year Jordan has not only had impeccable timekeeping and attendance, but has also worked hard and enthusiastically to develop his skillset. He is always polite and friendly as well as a positive role model for other students. Jordan has excelled impressively this year, and as a result

is one of the first level 2 learners to enter the Skillweld competition. He is thoroughly deserving of this award.”Jordan travels to college from East Grinstead. The presentations took place in the College’s new Advanced Technology Centre at Crawley, which was recently opened Lord David Blunkett. Many of the students honoured will be taught in the centre from September, using state-of-the-art equipment and interactive learning environments which the college says will inspire and encourage team work, innovation and skills development. Catering students prepared drinks and canapés for guests and winners, who included Crawley mayor Cllr Chris Cheshire and chair of Mid Sussex Council Cllr Peter Reed. The Head of Studies at the College, Jeremy Ridley, presented the awards.

Post reader Jordan Cummins sent us this picture of the Roffey area to compare with one we published recently from 100 years ago. Jordan tells us he took the picture to show the same modern spot as the one featured in World War One. The picture featured in a story about the book Great War Britain: West Sussex, Remembering 191418 Great War Britain winning an award. The book was been given an award for the best local history title submitted to CILIP, the UK’s Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Largely compiled by volunteers, the book was the culmination of an extensive two-year Heritage Lottery funded project led by West Sussex County Council’s Library Service in partnership with West Sussex Record Office. The book won the CILIP Alan Ball Local History Award and was published in August 2014 by the History Press, in association with West Sussex County Council. Terry Bracher, chairman of CILIP’s Local Studies Group, said: “The judges were unanimous in their praise for the book, especially the quality and breadth of research, the topics it covered and the fact that it was created with the input of so many volunteers. Congratulations to you all.” The two pictures are shown.

Young bikers learn skills On the road

Young cyclists were put through their paces in a “Bikeability” programme. Under strict supervision they gained the skills and confidence to ride bikes on today’s busy roads. The Farlington School Prep 6 girls undertook a week of training led by the West Sussex County Council Road Safety Team. The training started with bike checks and basic manoeuvres, before moving on to riding on roads in Slinfold.

By the end of the week they were able to start and finish a journey by road including passing parked or slower moving vehicles, make a U-turn, identify and react to hazards in the road, signal intentions to other road users, understand where to ride on the road, use junctions including turning left and right into major and minor roads, decide whether a cycle lane will help a journey and use the Highway Code, particularly when it comes to understanding road signs.

Roffey Griddle pride themselves on sourcing fresh and local ingredients where possible. Lamb chops, pork, liver, rump steak, all come from the New Street Butchers in frequent deliveries. Fruit, vegetables and noodles come from Wing Yip twice a week, and eggs come from Kinswood eggs. Andy said: “Customers can always expect a friendly face and we have Ross working here as the manager who is in almost every day, we serve our food quickly and the coffee’s not too bad either.” A range of traditional desserts are available including knickerbocker glories, ice creams, and belgian waffles. The Roffey Griddle is open from 7am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 3pm on Sundays.

Dramaworks celebrates it’s 7th year Dramaworks shortly celebrates seven years of providing fun drama workshops for the area’s young people and will soon launch an agency for its students, with the help of strong links with casting agencies in London. The part time drama centre in London Road also provides first class teaching drama qualifications from London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, with outstanding results. Many ex students have progressed to studying Drama at university, whilst some were able to secure a place in other subjects at a favoured university, as a result of acquiring UCAS points from their LAMDA exams. A grade 8 exam is worth 65 UCAS points. The unique teaching has attracted interest outside the UK, with two schools in Luxembourg adopting the Dramaworks methods and achieving superb results for students whose first language is not English. Students will present a range of pieces at the Horsham Festival on July 10 at the Capitol, alongside video footage displays of their work. Organisers urge the public to come along and support the Festival. For further information, please visit: www.drama-works. net and to register for classes: admin@drama-works.net .

Random Hall launches it’s Stonehouse Restaurant Review Christine Doyle I’m guessing many of us have driven past the peaceful 16thCentury farmhouse known as Random Hall, located just outside Slinfold Village. Some may have frequented but may I suggest embracing this lovely building and the best way to do this, is to visit the new Stonehouse Restaurant offering a new menu to explore. Since the beginning of the year, Random Hall have been working hard to bring you the new look restaurant re-named ‘The Stonehouse’ now open following a recent refurbishment it offers a ‘brasserie’ style a la carte menu with a daily changing set menu and an exciting new wine list. The new furniture along with the subtle lighting and warm fabrics create a comfortable atmosphere which together with the lounges and log fires will offer old and new customers a chance to enjoy classic dishes at affordable prices. ‘Jon our chef and his team offer a fantastic selection of food throughout the day, with special food events through the year. We also have seasonal menus and boast an interesting wine list. We pride ourselves on coming up with mouth-watering dishes using local and fresh ingredients, so there is

bound to be a dish you will love with the choice we have on our menu as well as the blackboard specials dotted around the dining areas’ Davey and I had been invited by the owner Nigel to dine at the Stonehouse, with an extensive choice I was rather menu struck, with many traditional favorites to choose from I opted for Coq au vin, the classic French chicken casserole with wine, bacon and mushrooms served with garlic mash. I choose this as two dishes never taste the same, each chef will make his own recipe and Jon’s was certainly up there as one of the best I have ever had (with the addition of croutons), the dish was full of flavour, a generous serving of the most succulent chicken and the garlic mash partnered the casserole perfectly. Jon told me he has been cooking to the same recipe for over 20 years and is a firm favorite among regular diners. Davey chose the Lamb Shank slow cooked with red wine and rosemary mash, he gave it full marks too! I will be back for the Calves Liver as Jon said this was another popular choice, he serves this with onion compote & pancetta mash. The Stonehouse menu is very well thought out, Jon’s choices have been put together after

years of experience and some new dishes, such as my selected starter of ‘Thia’ style muscles, in a subtle lychees, coconut and coriander sauce, this was a light dish with a slight twist on the usual way we have muscles served, this was more delicate in taste than the more common white wine & garlic. The restaurant is beautifully laid out and given the warm day we visited we were both really impressed with how comfortable the temperature was, being an old farmhouse the natural stone keeps the rooms cool, I thought I was going to have to opt for lighter dishes so was most pleased it was cool enough to enjoy the more traditional meal and we both had room for pudding. Davey went for the Molton Chocolate Pudding and I had the Crème Brulee, again both puds were delicious. Another very popular menu in the summer months are the Grills served with a choice of butters or sauces, the chilli coriander & lime butter is the one I was attracted too – next time I think. There are plenty of offers which you can take advantage of when you sign up to ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ which is their brand new loyalty scheme, offering 10% off your food, as well as other regular offers and benefits emailed to you.

The Loxwood Joust returns for it’s 5th year

Revealed

Interview with a Mediaeval Witch ‘Nanny Obz’ How did you get into witchcraft? I were born with a natural flair for it, me old Ma told me I entered this World with a wrinkled angry face like a wise old Grandmother. I also arrived with a squint (Handy for seeing into the other realms) She said I were prophesying before the age of three, Seemed natural to learn the Arts soon as I could read. (This is actually all TRUE!!!! lol).

How long have you been a witch for? Well tis 45 year since me birth, so oi suppose THAT long.

What is you most used spell ingredient? That I couldn’t tell ee, some things is best kept to those of us what knows.

What can the runes tell you - can they see into the future / predict the future? Every man and woman knows what’s best for ‘em, I merely helps ‘em to find the truth within themselves by casting the stones.

What is the most interesting challenge you have had as a witch? Because of my long dark hair, pointed chin, warts and slightly crossed eyes, I finds it hard to blend into the crowd on market day, even if I dresses up and pretends to be a LADY, some bogger always knows I is a witch.

Are there any areas of witchcraft that you would avoid?

I tries to avoid the DARK ARTS, curses and what have ‘ee, but sometimes tis difficult, folk often need a little boot up the backside to learn ‘em proper.

How can I tell if you are a real witch and not just tricking me? Well I has a bithmark on my left thigh in the shape of a “W” I could show ‘ee (In private) Folks would say the DEVIL has marked me as his own, but I aint having that.... (Again, all true).

What is your favorite spell? I always likes doing love potions.

Are witch powers passed down generation to generation or can anyone learn them? Well it helps to be born a witch, but with careful study and interest yes, anyone can do it.

What is your favorite spell? I always likes doing love potions.

How many witches are there in mediaeval England? Ooh I couldn’t say...probably at least a few in every Parish.

Legion Brings Back Horsham Armed Forces Sunday Horsham’s Royal British Legion’s ‘Horsham Armed Forces Sunday’ is taking place between 11am and 4pm this Sunday (June 26) in and around the Carfax, Horsham Town Centre. The event, in support of our armed forces and their families, will feature static displays of historic military vehicles (thanks to the organisers of the Capel Military Vehicle show), a band parade at 11am, followed by a ceremony, cadet force demonstrations, displays by armed forces charities, Gatwick Aviation Museum and the ‘Revivals’ providing further musical entertainment on the bandstand from 1pm. The band and parade will start at the end of East Street and march into the Carfax, before performing in front of the War memorial. The Carfax and East Street will be closed to traffic from 7am to 4pm, to facilitate this and the display of military vehicles. The event is being organised by Royal British Legion, with support from Horsham District Council, to highlight the role and work of Royal British Legion and other forces charities and local cadet forces. Nigel Caplin, Chairman of Royal British Legion, said: “I hope the public will enjoy the event on Sunday, which we would like to repeat every year, as part of the Horsham Time Well Spent calendar. As the Legion’s work in the community evolves, it is important for us to raise awareness of our role and not just be seen around the time of Remembrance.” Horsham District Council’s Chairman, Christian Mitchell, wished the event well: “I am sorry I can’t be there in person, but hope many people will enjoy the programme that has been organised and look forward to it becoming an established annual event, under the Royal British Legion’s direction.”

ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE DAY THAT TIME FORGOT Friday 24 June 8pm

SINATRA JUKEBOX Sunday 10 July 7.30pm

Sunjay is one of the UK’s brightest young stars On first hearing him perform, for the first time, you could be forgiven for thinking that singer/ guitarist, Sunjay, is older than his 21 years. With a relaxed and confident manner, vocal style and mastery of his instrument, he walks onto a stage and addresses the audience as though he is sitting down to play music with a group of close friends; a completely natural approach for a young man who picked up the guitar, when he was just 4 years old, and hasn’t put it down since. Sunjay’s style has that natural drift between folk and blues and both camps have recognised his obvious flair. There have been a clutch of award nominations, including winning the Wath Festival Young Performers Award. He also made the final selection for the BBC’s Young Folk Award in 2012, had three nominations at the Exposure Music Awards 2014 and was also recognised by the 2014 British Blues Awards. Drawing from a rich, musical and cultural background it is hardly surprising that Sunjay has quickly become recognised as one of the UK’s rising stars. His performances have

been described as “mature & confident”, while his guitar playing has been hailed as “superb, brilliant, experienced, intricate and faultless”. Nov 2015, welcomed Sunjay’s latest release ‘Black & Blues’. Returning to New Mountain Music Studios with producer Eddy Morton (The Bushbury Mountain Daredevils), ‘Black & Blues’ was recorded in a single day on August 25, 2015. The album, comprised of 10 traditional blues songs, interpreted and arranged by Sunjay, showcasing his powerful vocals and his intricate,

masterful guitar playing. “Black & Blues, is a testimony to the skill and talent of Sunjay, who is without doubt one of the slickest dudes to sit behind a guitar. He sounds cool, plays cool, looks cool so much so you almost expect a little light to come when he opens his guitar case.” Folkall.Blogspot. “For such a young performer, Sunjay shows real confidence, maturity and ease on stage that it seems like he has been doing nothing else all of his life.” – Folk All Magazine On July 16, Sunjay will perform at the Horsham Music Festival, Horsham Folk Club Stage, Amphitheatre (by Paninos) - Entrance Free, Stage opens 9.30am - and on July 17, tickets are available (at the door) for his performance at Horsham Folk Club, The Normandy Centre, Denne Road, Horsham, W. Sussex RH12 1JF - Doors: 7.45pm. Tickets: £8.00 (£5.00 members). “An amazing picker, a must see.” - Terry Reid “He’s a wizard on the guitar!” - Vin Garbutt For more information and the latest tour news, please visit: www. sunjay.tv or visit the official Sunjay Facebook page.

Lidia at Broadbridge Heath, who arranged the event, commented: “The 50+ group at the centre wanted to get involved and do something different. They came up with the idea of the Go Karts, as it’s something they had seen the kids doing, but never got to do themselves and were happy to donate and have a go”. The team raised nearly £300 from their efforts and look forward to taking part again in next year’s race for life events.

Rental market unphased by the prospect of Brexit Whatever the outcome of the EU Referendum, lettings agents do not believe supply, demand, or rental costs will be significantly affected, according to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) May Private Rental Sector (PRS) report1. Two thirds (65 per cent) of ARLA agents expect supply to

stay the same if the UK votes to leave the EU, compared to just a fifth (22 per cent) who predict it will fall as international landlords pull out of the market. A third (31 per cent) see demand decreasing, as relocating to the UK becomes a less attractive prospect, but over half (55 per cent) think it will remain as high as it cur-

rently is. In London, almost half (43 per cent) of agents expect the number of prospective tenants per property to fall in the event of a ‘Brexit’, as international demand weakens. While just over a quarter (19 per cent) of agents expect a Brexit result will cause upward pressure on rent costs, the

majority don’t imagine a massive change for tenants’ rents, should Britain leave the EU. David Cox, managing director of ARLA, comments: “There is no avoiding the EU Referendum at the moment; and whatever the outcome, we are likely to feel the impact of the fallout of this debate in different ways. However, it’s important to put this into perspective and not get carried away in a zeitgeist. As outlined in our recent Brexit Report, the lettings market hosts a large number of non-UK born citizens and any change in migration policy is likely to have an impact down the line, especially in London. However, our monthly report clearly shows the sentiment amongst members is that the immediacy of this effect is likely to be minimal.” Stamp duty reforms – two months on A third (37 per cent) of agents report a fall in supply of buy-to-let (BTL) properties since the stamp duty changes came into effect. This increases significantly in Wales, where 80 per cent of agents saw a dip in supply in May, as well as East Midlands and Yorkshire where half (50 per

There is no avoiding the EU Referendum at the moment; and whatever the outcome, we are likely to feel the impact of the fallout of this debate in different ways. cent) of ARLA agents have seen a decline. Looking forward, nearly half (48 per cent) of agents expect supply will continue to fall as more landlords walk away from the market as a result of the mortgage interest relief changes coming into force next year. Demand and supply Month on month, supply is consistently lower than in 2015. The number of properties managed per branch dropped in May, with agents recording an average 171 properties on their books. Demand also fell marginally last month, as agents registered 33 prospective tenants per branch, compared to 34 in April. David Cox, managing director of ARLA, comments: “The EU Referendum debate in many ways has stalled policy making and following the vote we need to move from political debate to action. We need supply to increase dramatically and quickly to really deal with the housing crisis as this is one of the most pressing problems facing UK society today.”

Horsham Park triumph over Pippbrook Bowls David Spurr - Horsham Park BC Horsham Park 67 – 47 Pippbrook

After days of rain forced games to be cancelled it brightened up for Horsham Park’s friendly home game against Dorking based Pippbrook Bowls Club. Park avenged last year’s defeat, winning on all 4 rinks and by

20 shots, 67 to 47. Park’s top rink went to Skip Harry Smith with Captain David Spurr and Ros Medland who dominated their game from the beginning winning by 19 shots to 6. Park’s other 3 rinks had much closer games which could have gone either way. Skip Bryony Wood came back from being 8 shots to 15 down to eventually win

17 shots to 15 in a remarkable comeback. Skip Ian Holmes was 13 shots to 1 up at tea but Pippbrook came back and closed the gap to eventually lose by only 2 shots, Park 16 to Pippbrook 14. Park’s final winning rink, skipped by Frank Heath, was up and down throughout the game but Park managed to hold on and win by 15 shots to 12.

Pulborough clubs join Hepworth’s for charity fundraiser The Mary How Trust from Pulborough’s charity match

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Members of Pulborough Sports and Social Club were invited to play against Pulborough in a charity fundraiser in aid of Pulborough based Mary How Trust. The match was sponsored by local brewers Hepworth’s that are soon to move to their new site near Pulborough. Despite their lack of experience, the Social Club showed determination and eventually a great deal of skill, to create a fun and competitive atmosphere,

fuelled by plenty of donated Hepworth’s beer. With green fees, donations and a game of “win the bottle of Kracken”, over £200 was raised for Pulborough BC’s chosen charity, The Mary How Trust. Earlier in the week Pulborough won a triple of league matches, the first at home against Goring Manor Hurricanes in the WSBL. 4 rinks played 21 ends, with the majority of play going Pulborough’s way. Of the 3 rink wins by skips Len Adsett, Paul Day and Alan Jordan, top rink went to Alan’s team of Melvin Green, Malcolm Gray and Jeff Davy

after winning all but 5 ends to finish on 28/9, producing another 8 league points to add to Pulborough’s tally. Pulborough’s good form in the Brookes Motors League continued when Crablands visited Pulborough. 2 triples played 18 ends of bowls, with John Brown and team having the closest game 24/12. The Captain’s rink of Jane Gray, Alan Jordan and Paul Day as skip, consistently scored 3’s throughout the game to keep their opposition in single figures and take top rink 26/9. Another 6 league points keeps Pulborough near the top of the table. Pulborough then visited Tarring Priory where 4 rinks played a close game, with only 1 result going Tarring’s way. The 3 remaining rinks found it hard to find their feet before all pulling ahead from around end 8, with skip John Brown, Lead Melvin Green, Number 2 Derek Swaffield and number 3 Chris Etherington snatching top rink 27/12. Another 8 league points sees Pulborough fighting for top spot in Division 2 of the WSBL. The Pulborough triples and fours made it through to the next round of the County competition. Ivan Salmon’s team of Martyn Ralph, Alan Jordan and Jeff Davy saw off tough opposition from Worthing Pavillion, much to the bemusement of the Worthing skip, to finish with an impressive 22/11 score.

Toby is ace on court Sussex Number 1 Toby in action

Junior Tennis A national challenge awaits young tennis star Toby Bloomfield next month. The year eight Steyning Grammar School student is currently ranked ‘Tennis Number 1’ in Sussex in the Under 14 age group. This is a noteworthy achievement since this age group covers boys a year older than he is. Toby’s next big tournament will be the Nationals which take place in Bath in July, which he admits will be a challenge. He said: “I know it will be tough at the Nationals playing boys at

least a year older than me, but I’m hoping for a good draw, and I’m definitely up for it.” He has received County Colours for the last four years, and will be awarded them again this year, after his recent performance leading Sussex at the National County Cup. Toby trains at the Pavilion and Avenue Tennis Club with his coach, Ben Reeve and in the Lawn Tennis Association performance squads there. He also attends regional tennis training camps at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. He has been lucky enough to train alongside the Davis Cup team there and, last time, alongside Johanna Konta and Heather Watson. Toby is having an outstanding season so far. He won a Regional Level LTA tournament in Tunbridge Wells at Easter, in both under-14 singles and doubles. At half-term, he competed in a Regional Level LTA tournament at Seaford, where he not only won the under-14s boys singles, but also the under-16s boys singles, despite this age group being boys at least three years older than him, bringing accolades from the LTA coaches.

The Billingshurst pair made a poor start and was 8 adrift before scoring. Still struggling Billing-

shurst did manage to thwart a Crawley “hot shot” when John B drew shot with the final wood of the end to make the score 18-6. With the visitors 22-9 down after the 14th end the prospects of a Billingshurst win looked as bleak but playing positively with nothing to lose, the visitors then proceeded to gather 16 shots by winning the next 7 ends to run out worthy winners 25-22. In the next round the Billingshurst pair will play at home to Southwick Park BC.

Four girls from Rydon Community College in Storrington took part in the finals of the 4 x 25 metres girls English Schools Swimming Association freestyle relay for primary schools held at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield. The four girls were headed by team captain Zoe Algar, the other team members being Amber Ranson, Jessica Mace and Olivia Round who all swim for Atlantis Swimming Club. The path to Sheffield began at the Pavilions when they won the Sussex county round. This was followed by the South East regional heats where they finished runners up to qualify for the National finals. Rydon’s girls found themselves in the third heat from which they secured third place position with a

time of 59.46 seconds to take them through to the final in 7th position. In front of a packed crowd Amber Ranson completed the first length of the twenty-five metre pool and give Rydon a small lead. She handed over to the team’s captain Zoe Algar who in turn handed to Jessica Mace; both swimmers being involved in many changes in position. For the last length of the race Rydon’s Olivia Round entered the water in 4th but powered home to take first place for West Sussex’s only representative in the finals, Rydon CC. The girls’ individual gold medals were presented by Mrs Tracy Pearson, president of the English Schools’ Swimming Association. They also received the cup, which Rydon is entitled to keep until next year’s championships, and a winners shield to be retained by their school.

Roffey captain Matt Davies said: “Worthing were not keen to play but the umpires ruled the conditions fit and I won the toss and put them in. Then Stuart Whittingham and Leigh Harrison bowled quality spells, swinging the ball and hitting good lengths and we held our chances, but this was so one-sided that it was embarrassing, not the sort of game that we want to be playing in the Premier League really.” Josh Fleming added: “The wicket was damp but it wasn’t dangerous and we were happy to

The relay, which started at Slindon College and finished in the park, was an event run in teams with each member of the team running one of the four very challenging legs, seven Horsham Joggers teams finished in times ranging from 3.58.07 to 4.56.53.

get a win and move ourselves up the table.” At the Manor Sports Ground the reason for Worthing’s reluctance to play immediately became apparent as they staggered from crisis to crisis. Stuart Carter top scored with 14, seven of the other batsmen contributed 12 between them in a miserable 68 balls. Whittingham took 5-31, Harrison 3-31 and Luke Barnard 2-6 before the unbeaten Rohit Jagota (44) and Liam Gibson (29) romped home in 56 deliveries. The maximum 30 point win gets Roffey up to third, 54 points adrift of leaders Horsham but with a game in hand, making Roffey’s visit to Cricketfield Road tomorrow (Saturday) a doublepointer. The always closely fought local derby starts at 11am because of the Music Festival at Horsham Cricket Club.

Sports Development and Places for People sports day a success Junior Sport Dave Snith - Sports Editor Thirty-four sporty children aged 9-11 years from five local primary schools – Kingslea, Shelley, St Mary’s (Pulborough), Holbrook and Southwater Junior Academy enjoyed a gifted and talented day staged at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre by Horsham District Sports Development and the leisure operator, Places for People, working in partnership. The day opened with workshops in basic sports psychology and healthy nutrition before moving into a more strenuous mode with

plyometric and fitness measurement with staff members of the BBHLC fitness team, including national discus ace Jade Lally. Ex-professional footballer Andy Thomson advised children on the thrills of pursuing a career in professional sport but the wisdom of having a backup plan if it doesn’t work out. After a lunchtime sports quiz, won by Charlotte Lewington and Freya Bell from Shelley School with 29 correct answers out of 30, the children undertook the gruelling bleep test to test their cardio-vascular capacity and benefited from more physical training knowledge

from Jade Lally. The day ended with the children working in teams of three to circulate around 12 sporting challenge stations, recording their results as they went. HDSD Sports Development Officer, Ian Ford, commented, “You don’t need to be a sports scientist to know that 34 children will sleep well tonight. Well done to them all for their brilliant exertions, concentration and behaviour.” High demand has meant that another, similar day will be staged in two weeks’ time to ensure that the Horsham area’s tradition of fostering sport stars is given another shot in the arm.

The Roffey Cricket Club’s under 15 team has reached the final of the ECB Knock Out competition after defeating Eastbourne with ease in the semi final. To get to this stage Roffey U15’s beat Barns Green in the first round, West Chiltington in the second round and local rivals Horsham in the third round. Against Eastbourne, Roffey won the toss and put the visitors in. Some very tight bowling and fielding limited Eastbourne to just 14 runs off the first 8 overs. The quality of the fielding was evident as both the opening and number 3 Eastbourne batsmen lost their wickets to run outs; Tom Colbran threw the ball in for the opening batsman to be run out and sharp work in the

field from Sam Henderson allowed Lewis Foster to remove the bails. This was followed by two outstanding catches from Pat Gibbs and Tom Colbran, a fantastic stumping by Callum Jeal, and two batsmen clean bowled by Lewis Foster and Josh Dance limiting Eastbourne to just 66 runs from their 20 overs. In reply Roffey’s openers, Adam Williams and Conor Griffiths, both scored quickly with a six from Conor and 20 off one over from Adam. The two remained unbeaten and overhauled Eastbourne’s meagre total in just 11 overs. Roffey now face Preston Nomads in the regional final at The Blackstone Academy Ground, Woodmancote tonight (Friday 24) from where the winners will represent Sussex and play against Kent in July.

Billingshurst thrash the Academy in vital win Sunday June 19 - Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 167 All Out (47.5 overs) Sussex Cricket Board Development XI 84 All Out (30.0 overs) Billingshurst won by 83 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After Billingshurst posted no more than a handy score the Sussex Development XI capitulated to 47-9 before last man Jed O’Brien - batting with number 10 Adam Barton – top scored with 25 to marginally reduce the students’ blushes. The 24 point win, still leaves Billingshurst at the foot of the table but now just six behind Worthing. Umpire Paul Baker paid tribute to Jim Burroughs and the groundstaff, saying: “Considering the appalling weather they’ve had to contend with, the presentation of the ground was excellent – the pitch played remarkably well and was exceptionally dry.” Billingshurst Chairman Jim said: “I was reduced to cutting the grass in pouring rain – it just wouldn’t stop, so it was great to get a game in. Abidene Sakande bowled beautifully for his 5-10, he’s got a

perfect action, so effortless! Ben Williams (3-18) and Dan Doram (2-31) bowled well, too. This was a desperately needed win for us, our first in any format this season, and it has buoyed up the team. We finished bang on time: as soon as we came off the heavens opened! We bowl and field well, especially at home and now need to eliminate silly mistakes and build the batting around the players who keep getting good starts: Tom Haynes, Stuart Barber, Scott Stratton and Mike Burroughs. And we’re hoping that our new overseas Mahesh Rajaratne will be a good acquisition, too. If we can start getting beyond 200 then we’ll have something to bowl at and should be capable of survival in the Premier League.” Earlier Billingshurst had got to 167 courtesy of another 40 from Mike Burroughs, 35 from Dan Doram and double figure contributions from Rajaratne, Scott Stratton and Sakande, Nick Oxley and Jonty Jenner taking three wickets each. It is, though of great concern to the future of Sussex cricket that the Sussex Academy, the supposed training ground for the county’s stars of the future, went without a single win from 10 games last year and, half way through this season’s programme, have only secured one victory. Billingshurst will be targeting weaker sides but have a tough home game on Saturday against aspiring East Grinstead.

Horsham sink Billingshurst with another big win Saturday June 18 - Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 99 All Out (34.4 overs) Horsham 101-1 (22.1 overs) Horsham won by 9 wickets

Horsham’s Michael Munday

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a quick-fire demolition job Horsham increased their lead at the top of the table to a 45 point cushion over Cuckfield. At Cricketfield Road Horsham won the toss and put Billingshurst in. Horsham Captain James Johnson said: “Getting this game on was a huge testament to the skill and dedication of our hardworking groundsman Jamie Morgan with a great deal of assistance from our Chairman Richard Marshall.” Richard added: “On Thursday we had no chance – it was horrendous during the day and then we had more very heavy rain in the evening and night. Fortunately there was some relief on Friday and we just rolled and rolled the wicket to see what happened and on the morning of the match the umpires were happy that it was safe to play.”

Battling Roffey bow out of the National Cup Roffey’s Alex Collins

Sunday June 19 - England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship – Regional Final Weybridge 195-9 (45 overs) Roffey 154 All Out (41.3 overs) Weybridge won by 41 runs Cricket

Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey came off second best in this hard-fought, gritty encounter against a pedigree side who had racked up 341-6 in the previous round to win by 204 runs. In that game county second XI cricketer Ben Curran (brother of Surrey’s Sam and Tom Curran) made 157. Against Roffey the Weybridge line up also included the Winslade brothers, both with first class experience, Francois Vainker, previously on Worcestershire’s books and former Brighton & Hove player Henry Turner, with a minor county background. Why Weybridge are sixth in the Surrey Championship remains unclear, but they had beaten runaway leaders Reigate Priory the day before (when Turner and Vainker each took 4 cheap wickets). So this was a tough ask for Roffey, especially as they were without consistent all-rounder George Fleming, in France to see England playing football the following evening. But, they worried Weybridge after they had won the toss and elected to bat. Leigh Harrison took a wicket in his second over and then Rohit Jagota promptly bowled Curran, leaving Weybridge reeling on 5-2. The outfield was slow and soft with rising ground inside half of the boundary and it was not until the ninth over that the first four was scored (the previous day’s match at Weybridge had been abandoned

soon after the start when players were slipping and sliding). The run rate was slow – 1.7 after 10 overs and still under 3 after 20, but when Rohit (1-26) and Leigh (1-21) had completed their 9 over allocations no further wickets had fallen. Luke Barnard subsequently took 4-36 and occasional bowler Theo Rivers a commendable 2-39 but the others struggled and Roffey’s normally excellent fielding was ragged, great catches by Usman Khan and Alex Collins apart, enabling Weybridge to post a demanding 196 target. Roffey also lost early wickets and started slowly – getting to 26-2 off 10 overs. Weybridge’s bowling had greater depth and the loss of Jagota was a major blow. Matt Davies (33) and Theo Rivers (55) staged a recovery, keeping the run rate manageable but when they were out in quick succession the end followed swiftly, the margin suggesting an easier win for Weybridge than was the case for all but the last few overs, slow left armer Vainker taking 4-29. For the second year running Roffey went further in this cup than any other Sussex side, but disappointed Captain Matt Davies said: “Leigh & Rohit bowled very well but we were a player short. We gave away too many in the field – 175 was par. Our chase never really got going and when Theo and I got out that was the game.” Weybridge go on to play last year’s winners Blackheath (Kent) in the next round.

Billingshurst lost an early wicket but reached 38 before further loss despite the introduction of Michael Munday into the attack after just 9 overs. Sam Cushing, finishing with 3-29, dismissed both openers but Scott Stratton, top-scoring with 28, and Mike Burroughs contributed to promising partnerships, however wickets kept falling and Billingshurst were reduced to a precarious 44-6. Munday took 3-21 in 13 overs,

On Thursday we had no chance – it was horrendous during the day and then we had more very heavy rain in the evening hollowed out the middle order although the wicket was more conducive to seam. Only Awais Malik providing some late resistance as Horsham Rugby Club’s Jonny Whiting ran through the tail to end with 4-43, Billingshurst totalling 99. In reply Craig Gallagher fell to Ben Williams but Joe Ludlow

with 43 and Tom Johnson 30, both undefeated, saw Horsham home, the game finishing at 4.25 despite a leisurely tea interval. Tom Johnson’s run a ball innings included 2 sixes, the second of which brought Horsham victory. Skipper James Johnson told us: “I flipped the coin right today, then Sam bowled well and Jonny never gives us other than 100%. Another good win for us – obviously!” Billingshurst Captain Ben Williams commented: “The wicket was soft and the outfield slow so it wasn’t a fast scoring day, but we just didn’t get anywhere near enough runs – it was as simple as that. But, considering that we had nothing to defend we bowled well enough.” Horsham were pleased to notch up a further 30 points on a day when East Grinstead’s ground was flooded, abandoning their game, and Preston Nomads lost. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham, looking to avenge elimination from the National Knockout Cup by their close neighbours, are at home again in a sterner challenge against Roffey. The game starts at 11am with a Music Festival, food stalls and a beer tent opening during the afternoon.

Poor qualifying session ruins Palmer’s race Joylon Palmer racing at the new Baku City Circuit

Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor After a disappointing day of qualifying last Saturday Jolyon Palmer started Sunday’s 51 lap inaugural race at the Baku City Circuit in Azerbaijan from the 22nd and last place on the grid. His Renault Sport team mate Kevin Magnussen also had a bad day and started one place ahead of Palmer in 21st position. The race itself proved to be more productive for the team with both drivers pushing hard to work through the field with Palmer eventually finishing fifteenth and Magnussen one place ahead in fourteenth. Palmer was forced into making two pit stops after suffering a flat spot

on a tyre. He started on new supersoft tyres before changing to new softs on lap eleven then back to new supersofts on lap 31. Palmer, talking after the race, said, “We showed once again that our race pace is a lot better than our qualifying pace, which I am thankful for. I had a big flat spot on the soft tyres which meant I had to change; up until then the pace was quite strong. The supersofts did well but it was tough to make up the time it takes to pit. That and making a mistake at the start pretty much decided my race. It’s a fun track to drive; it’s just a shame that we didn’t have the car for it today.” Palmer and his team are next in action at the Austrian Grand Prix on the weekend of July 2 & 3.
