A24 Driver jailed for worst dangerous driving in Sussex phil dennett News Editor

A motorcyclist who exceeded 100 miles an hour on the A24 near Horsham and then narrowly avoided colliding with pedestrians and other vehicles during a high speed pursuit has started a jail sentence. Police describe the behaviour of Gavin Collett as the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving they have ever seen in Sussex. Collett, 32, was driving so fast when first spotted on the A24 southbound between Broadbridge Heath and Findon that the National Police Air Service helicopter was called in to track his movements. A court heard he carried out a series of dangerous manoeuvres at various locations, including builtup parts of Worthing and Brighton on March 10 this year. On several occasions he went straight through red lights while pedestrians were crossing, mounted pavements, travelled in the face

of oncoming traffic and overtook vehicles with little room to do so. Police reported that throughout the pursuit he consistently travelled at excessive speed and contravened numerous traffic laws across the county. At Lewes Crown Court, Collett, unemployed, of Bramber Road,

We have reviewed the footage and this is without doubt the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving we have ever seen in Sussex. Broadwater, was sentenced to a total of two years in prison; 18 months for dangerous driving and three months for each of two counts of failing to stop after a road traffic collision. He received no separate penalty for charges of driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance. He was also disqualified from

Nightingale Road, Horsham

driving for three years and must remain on licence for at least 12 months on release from prison. He admitted the offences at an earlier hearing. His two-year prison sentence includes time already spent in custody from his arrest on March 13 .PC Ben Henwood, of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, who led the investigation, said: “Collett’s sentence is fully deserved, and it represents the massively aggravated nature of his behaviour over an extended period of time. While this is a good result from a policing point of view, the best result is the fact that no one was injured on that day, and we’re extremely thankful for that. “We have reviewed the footage and this is without doubt the most outrageous incident of dangerous driving we have ever seen in Sussex. “Throughout his journey, Collett showed a blatant disregard for anyone else’s safety and it’s a miracle no one else was hurt. Collett eventually handed himself in to police in Hampshire three days after the incident.

Youngsters entertained grandparents with a day of festivities including a street party and a chance to wear homemade red, white and blue hats. After the grandparents had been royally entertained at a ‘street party’ on the lawn outside the New Courtyard Hall, pupils and relatives from Farlington School at Horsham enjoyed the PTA Summer Fair organised in conjunction with Cranleigh Golf and Country Club. Inflatables, sumo wrestling and garden games were enjoyed in the summer sunshine. Farlington Prep Headmistress Frances Mwale, said: “We have been asking the children what it means to be British. Answers range from thoughts of British foods such as tea, jam on toast, roast beef and cabbage, to Wimbledon, fairness and safety, speaking English and be-

Aviva Life and Pensions UK Limited have submitted their planning application, after the public consultation during March when Swan Walk’s plans for the redevelopment of the western end of the centre were showcased over two days. Subject to approval, as previously announced, the works on the ground are scheduled to commence on site in early 2018. What a great role model to have.” Nicholas Hughes, General Manager, at Cranleigh Golf and Country Club said “We were delighted to be invited to support the PTA Summer Fair at Farlington School. It was lovely to see so many local residents in attendance with their children. One lucky Farlington parent walked away with a free year’s worth of membership at the club.” Pictured are scenes from the event.

Southwater man caught in Gatwick conspiracy

Gatwick Airport workers who plotted to steal millions of pounds worth of goods from their em-

ard Beaumont, 60, a HGV driver, of Edinburgh Close, Southwater, and Stewart Morris, 54, a driver, of Southwark Close, Crawley, who were both convicted of conspiracy to steal but acquitted of money laundering. They were each sentenced to 24 months in prison, but in their cases the sentence was suspended for two years. They were ordered to carry out 180 hours of community work. Masses of cigarettes, perfumes, alcohol and electrical goods with a combined value of £2,432,665 were stolen between 1 January and 1 August 2013. The large-scale conspiracy was carried out by employees who loaded planes with items belonging to a catering company which supplies airlines at the airport. Following a thorough investigation by Sussex Police, the 15 individuals were all arrested in a pre-planned day of action on 9 July 2013. The arrests were made at addresses across the South East with the support of resources in Sussex, Surrey and Kent. More than

ployer have been jailed for a total of almost 35 years. Those involved included Rich-

80 officers were involved in the operation. At Lewes Crown Court the following were jailed after being convicted of conspiracy to steal and money laundering: - Keith Gosling, 58, a factory worker, of Ashurst Way, East Preston (28 months); - Durrell Corbin, 49, a painter, of Home Close, Brixham, Devon (36 months); - Cezary Kosobudski, 52, a factory worker, of Cabourne Road, Grimsby, South Humberside (28 months); - William Webber, 61, an assembler, of Salisbury Road, Crawley (28 months); - Peter Simmonds, 51, a telecommunications employee, of Montgomery Drive, Bognor Regis (28 months); - Pietro Bernone, 29, a driver, of Oakapple Close, Crawley (32 months); - Mindaugas Baranauskas, 36, unemployed, of Denchers Plat, Crawley (43 months); - George Messenger, 57, an

airline employee, of Hobbs Industrial Estate, Lingfield, Surrey (24 months); - Alan Hunt, 58, a HGV driver, of Titmus Drive, Crawley (24 months); - Christopher Allen, 55, unemployed, of Lansdowne Way, Angmering (28 months); - William Ayling, 62, a driver, of Mayo Road, Brighton (28 months); - Karamjeet Singh, 54, unemployed, of Richmond Road, Gillingham, Kent (48 months). Viktorija Gudonyte, 33, a sales assistant, of Lavington Close, Crawley, was convicted of theft and sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. Police said that the case first came to light when, in February 2013, Gate Gourmet was made aware of what appeared to be a large stock discrepancy of dutiable goods at Gatwick Airport. After an internal investigation identified a large-scale theft by a number of employees, the company approached Sussex Police for assistance.

Jo Cox murder a sombre reminder

A verbal abuse attack on a young child at Southwater is being linked with the Referendum held last Thursday. Sussex Police said: “ Since the Referendum vote on 23 June we have so far had one report of hate crime linked to the Referendum. This was a case of racially aggravated threatening behaviour. It took place in Southwater Country Park near Horsham shortly after 4.45pm on Saturday 25 June in which an eleven-year old girl was reported to have been the subject of verbal racist abuse by one of a group of teenage boys. “Enquiries are ongoing and there have been no arrests at this stage. “We always advise anyone who has been the victim of hate crime to report it to us, either via 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101, or online via our website www. sussex.police.uk “

Sussex Mark Spofforth and the chairman of West Sussex County Council county Cllr Pat Arculus attended the service. Commenting on the service, Cllr Christian Mitchell said: “This very special celebration service marks the beginning of the Civic Year and the closing of St. Mary’s Flower Festival. The Flower Festival this year celebrated the theme ‘Let all the World!’ and the church looked absolutely beautiful.” Pictured are from left President of St. John Ambulance, Sussex Mrs. Caroline Lucas, Vice Chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Roger Clarke, Cllr Arculus; Cllr Mitchell, Mark Spofforth and Jeremy Quin, Horsham MP.

Social media car fraudster jailed A fraudster who tried to sell cars he did not have while leading a life of luxury and showing off his lavish cars has been jailed for a total of five years. James Fyfe, from Stane Street, Slinfold, near Horsham, used social media to lure customers, but was caught when a customer complained to police. Fyfe pleaded guilty to fraud for trying to sell high value cars he did not have. Police investigations revealed the 26-year-old advertised a Porsche GD3 Rs for sale on a website called Piston Heads and a woman in Thailand agreed to pay a deposit of £88,000 for three cars. The cars never arrived and the woman reported it to police. Fyfe was arrested on February 9 on suspicion of fraud and then arrested for further offences which had come to light and charged. A Ferrari was offered for sale for £85,000 and another £31,000 deposit paid for a left hand drive vehicle. Two personalised number plates were also purchased one for £22,000 and another for £10,500, both bought through social media accounts. Fyfe was already convicted in 2014 for other fraud offences for selling non-existent goods on eBay and was further charged with seven

breaches of his serious crime prevention order and an offence of money laundering. Fyfe was sentenced at Chichester Crown Court to four years imprisonment for frauds totalling £231,000. He also received 12 months each for the six breaches of a serious crime prevention order to be served concurrently alongside the main sentence. He also activated a one-year suspended sentence given to him in May 2015 for

previous fraud offences. In total he was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Detective Constable Sara Liau said: “Fyfe claimed he ran a company called Prestige Lifestyle, which boasts an impressive Facebook page, and people would contact him about his cars and he would offer to sell them high-end often limited edition cars. “He duped everyone he was involved with that he was leading a lavish lifestyle. However it was all a lie, nothing Fyfe posted online was real. “Fyfe has committed all the offences under the guise of his bogus company called Prestige Lifestyle Supercars, registering it and producing merchandise to give the impression of it being legitimate. “He used social media to promote the company and spent the money he got from committing fraud to live a luxurious lifestyle hiring luxury supercars, buying high value designer clothes and treating friends and family to meals out and hotel stays. All this continued the impression of him being a successful businessman. “He also appeared in an article in the Daily Mail in December 2015, pretending to be the owner of a Lambourgini that crashed and used it to promote his fake company.”

Survivor Steve Lewis A Horsham bowel cancer survivor is urging fellow residents to complete screening tests after early diagnosis saved his life. This year is the tenth anniversary of the NHS screening. As part of the programme test kits are posted automatically to all UK residents registered with a GP once they reach the age of 60. When Steve Lewis from Southwater, near Horsham, turned 60 last year, he says his life was as near to perfect as possible. Then he received the invitation to take part in the screening programme. A couple of weeks later and with a bit of a nudge from his wife he

completed the samples and sent them off. The tests were abnormal and within weeks he discovered he had bowel cancer. Steve had surgery to remove the affected part of the bowel and was fitted with a temporary stoma bag. He was told that the cancer has been caught at an early stage and indications were that the surgery had removed it. There was no need for chemotherapy or radiotherapy and Steve is readjusting to life back to where it was before surgery. He said: “I don’t know who posted my invitation, what I do know is it saved my life. “I hadn’t had a single symptom, so when the screening test came through the door I never thought it would show anything. “The test couldn’t be more quick and simple to do. “While it may sound a bit embarrassing or unpleasant, it’s so important to put aside a few minutes to do the test even if you feel fit and healthy, because the test can detect cancer at an early stage before any symptoms are visible. Completing and returning your kit as quickly as possible is crucial as any delay could be lifethreatening.” The current FOB screening test will be replaced over the next two years with the new Faecal Immunochemical Test which is easier to use and more accurate.

Brave Donald proud to be at Armed Forces Sunday The help given to soldiers, sailors and airmen who serve our country was remembered during Horsham Royal British Legion’s Armed Forces Sunday. Five hours of activities in and around the town’s Carfax put the spotlight on the work done to support them. One of the veterans attending the event, Donald Wilfred Puttock, who was born in 1926, had only recently been awarded the Legion D’Honneur by France, recognising his bravery 71 years after the end of World War II. Owners of military vehicles gave a glimpse of the sights to be seen at this weekend’s Capel Military Show, and there were events including a band parade, ceremony, displays by armed forces charities, an appearance by Gatwick Aviation Museum. The ‘Revivals’ group performed musical entertainment on the bandstand. The Surrey and Sussex Drum and Bugle Corp led a parade of Royal British Legion Standards, veterans and cadets into the Carfax before performing in front of the War Memorial. The Royal British Legion organised the event, supported by Horsham District Council, to highlight the role and work of the Royal British Legion and other forces charities and local cadet forces. Capel’s Military Show is being

held this Saturday and Sunday. Capel show organiser Phil Harris said: “I was delighted we were able to contribute such a great range of vehicles to Royal British Legion’s Sunday event and hope to see many of the visitors at our own event at Capel this weekend.” Nigel Caplin, Chairman of Royal British Legion said:“I think the public enjoyed the event on Sunday and I am especially grateful to Phil Harris and his Capel Show team and the Surrey and Sussex Drum and Bugle Corps which were truly impressive. I hope that those who visited left with a greater appreciation of our role in the community beyond being seen around the time of Remembrance.” Pictured are scenes from Armed Forces Sunday. I very much forward to seeing it grow in future years.”

The King’s Shilling at Cedar Court Care Home To commemorate the bravery and loyalty to King George V and the allies shown by the Canadian Corps during World War 1, the staff and residents of Cedar Court Care Home invited Lieutenant-Colonel Simon Rushen, Chief of Staff, from the High Commission of Canada, London, to join them on June 21 to pay their respects. LCol Rushen was joined by Al Cunningham, President of the Canadian Veterans Association (UK), as well as members of the Royal British Legion Cranleigh and Deputy Mayor of Waverley, Councillor Simon Inchbald. Over 20 Children from Cranleigh School, were marched through the

gardens of Cedar Court by Corporal Dixon and trainees from 25th Training Regiment, Deepcut. The children were in fine voice, singing songs to mark the occasion. The residents always appreciate the interaction with local children and with the sun shining, enjoyed a memorable afternoon. Many of the Cedar Court staff were dressed in military attire and one of the highlights of the afternoon was the re-enactment of the King’s Shilling. In past times to ‘take the King’s shilling’ was to agree to serve as a sailor or soldier in the Royal Navy or the British Army. The recruits handed out

the shillings to the children, who enjoyed the activity, and were then marched through the garden once more. LCol Rushen, said: “I was warmly welcomed by the residents of Cedar Court and honoured to be in the company of these elders. The ceremony truly celebrated the achievement of the Canadian Soldiers who fought during WW1 and the spirit of the occasion was reinforced by the superb singing of the children.” For more information about Cedar Court Care Home, please call: 01483 275 191 or visit: www.cedarcourtcarehome.co.uk

Cranleigh show date move proves a good choice Moving to a June date proved a good move for a traditional farming show. Good crowds supported the Cranleigh Show as it celebrated its 70th anniversary and maintained one of England’s best-loved rural traditions, the agricultural show. Reflecting on the event show chairman Will Elliott said: “It was a good show. We had particularly strong sheep entries and the horse show was very well supported. We had a good crowd, it was lovely to see the display of farming machinery since the war and we were pleased with the decision to move to a June date.” He said it was fantastic to see so many of the younger generation, from a three- year- old with a lamb to two teenagers showing their home-bred bulls, already bitten by the bug of livestock showing, learning how to present their animals in immaculate condition and control them in the ring. Pyrotechnic aerobatics in the main arena saw motorcyclists from Moto-Stunts International hurling themselves through a wall of fire. And in complete contrast, the Concours d’Elegance turned the arena into a serene and colourful pageant of historically clad sidesaddle riders. Stealing the show, and the Championship, was 11 year

old Kate Hewson from Kingston wearing Balmoral tartan and riding the impeccably behaved Dartmoor pony New Oak Jester. She had only been learning side-saddle technique since October but her riding was flawless and she was in perfect confident control surrounded by much bigger horses. The highlight of the show was the livestock parade, demonstrating the wonderful loyalty of farmers as it is a terrific commitment of time, form filling, money and energy to bring animals to the show ring. Pictured are scenes from the show.

Celebrating a special birthday Party mood

Residents at Care South’s Sussexdown care home in Storrington welcomed guests for a special occasion. Carol Cleveland, Thia McIntyre and Conservative MP Nick Herbert, as well as friends and family joined residents, staff and the Friends of Sussexdown committee to celebrate the official birthday The Queen. The Friends of Sussexdown and the activities department, which raises money to provide entertainment for residents and staff at the home, organised an afternoon tea party. Entertainment included the 1440 Shoreham Squadron ATC band and Anabel Mather, 16, who

sang a number of solo pieces for the residents and guests. Local magician Peter Wentworth kept residents and invited guests entertained with his magic tricks and guests were also treated to a delicious spread of homemade cakes and traditional British party food. The raffle raised £400 and will go towards the home’s Quality of Life Fund, enabling the staff to plan a varied programme of activities and events for the home’s residents. Staff at Sussexdown also lined up special guest appearances and welcomed to the home Carol Cleveland, who some will remember from Monty Python. Carol

opened the event, welcoming invited guests and residents to the party. The home also had the pleasure of hosting Thia McIntyre, who is famous for her role as one of Les Dawson’s dancers. Carol and Thia judged the fancy dress competition and announced the winner of the fancy dress as Pat Lawrence. Pat is a volunteer at Sussexdown care home and visits the home weekly to play bingo with the residents; Pat won in her pink Charleston dress. The home welcomed members of the Royal British Legion and Less We Forget Association to the event.

Riding for a Horsham-based charity is just divine for Davina McCall. Dedicated Davina hosted the Big Sussex Bike Ride for Action Medical Research for the sixth time and it is expected to raise about £30,000 when all the sums are finalised. Skating legend Jayne Torvill was among 450 cyclists of all abilities raising much-needed funds for sick and disabled babies and children. Davina said after riding the 68mile champion route: “I always

love doing this ride, it’s such a fun, friendly day out but it’s also in aid of a fantastic cause which I grew up with so it’s very close to my heart. “If you didn’t join us this year, I think you should sign up straight away for 2017! It’s great to have something to train for to keep you fit and also you’re helping to fund research into some rare and debilitating conditions.” For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has helped pioneer treatments and ways to prevent disease that have benefited millions of people in the UK and across the world. Research it has funded has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths. Action Medical Research is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. This year Action Medical Research opened up the ride to supporters of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, as it celebrates working in partnership with the charity to jointly fund over £2m of research. Paula Ray, Action Medical Research’s Community Fundraising Manager for the region, said: “Everyone who took part had a great day from the moment they were waved off by Davina at the start and we’re on our way to raising at least £30,000 to help develop more new treatments and cures for sick babies and children.”

Jenny and Pam’s dream raises £1million 20 years on Award group

Horsham District on losing side as “exit” supporters win Euro vote. Horsham found itself on the losing side as the “exit” supporters won the historic Euro referendum. Residents across the district voted 51.5 per cent to remain in the European Union, against 48.5 to exit. But nationally the exit voters won a clear victory. At Horsham the “stairs” polled 43,785 against 41,303 for the “leavers”. But, as in many areas, the margin of votes was not big enough to compensate for heavy defeats elsewhere, with the “exit” supporters polling more votes nationally. Neighbouring Mid Sussex followed the same path in the vote on Thursday of last week, with

Two women who played a big part in a cancer charity group raising more than £1 million have been recognised for their outstanding work. Jenny Kern and Pam Goldsmith were in a group of five determined and caring women who set up the Billingshurst Macmillan group 20 years ago and over the years raised the impressive total. At the annual Sussex Macmillan Volunteer Rally at Cowdray Park they celebrated being short listed for the Douglas Macmillan Appeal

award for their devotion. Both received a certificate and wine for this nomination and also the acknowledgement for the years of service for starting the Billingshurst group and steering it to the huge contribution given each year to the Midhurst Cancer Support Service. There are now 18 active committee members and Jenny and Pam are both standing down from their positions of Chair and Treasurer respectively but will still be involved in the making

of cakes and jams which are sold at all Macmillan events within West Sussex and the Billingshurst area. The charity says they will be missed. The success story does not end there. Each year MacMillan makes an award to the most successful committees in the country. The Billingshurst committee came out on top for the London and South East area, which the charity says is their reward for commitment and hard work, resulting from a small beginning 20 ago.

the “remainders” winning with 53.1 per cent against the “leavers” 46.9, polling 43,785 and 41, 303 respectively. During the campaign the Prime Minister David Cameron visited Horsham to boost the “remain” turnout, but in the end nationally not enough “remainders” turned out to win the historic vote. Nationally 17, 410, 742 people voted to “exit” and 16, 141, 241, voted to “remain”, 51.9 per cent and 48.1 per cent nationally. Now the long administrative process of leaving the European Union is under way. Caption news editor Phil Dennett casts his vote

Endangered dog breed gets huge PR boost Endangered dog breed gets huge PR boost as 126 Sussex spaniels descend on Sussex Country Show for new record In a bid to raise awareness, the Sussex Spaniel Association (SSA) set a new record for a mass gathering of the endangered dog breed at last weekend’s Sussex Country Show, which was held at Parham Park. The remarkable gathering took place in the Main Arena, where an official photo was taken, which will now be submitted to the Guinness Book of Records. Back in 2010, 73 Sussex spaniels from all over the UK gathered at the event, but the SSA smashed that record this year. SSA Vice President, Sheila Appleby, explains: “It was a unique event to see all 126 Sussex spaniels in one place,

with their golden liver coats and wagging tails – something none of us ever imagined would happen. I had thought we might be able to get 100 together, but far more turned up on the day than expected, and this was a lovely surprise for us. “This achievement helps to raise awareness of this ‘forgotten’ breed, which we wouldn’t want to see die out. The dogs took it all in their stride, they are dogs of confidence and character. I was so proud of everyone as they all marched into the Main Arena, there were so many of them, they just kept coming...a truly amazing experience to behold.” For more information, visit www.sussexcountryshow. co.uk or www.sussexspaniels.org. uk.

A job in care is so much more than a pay packet

We at Caremark (Pulborough) are proud of the bespoke home care service we provide but we know that without our wonderful care workers there would be no Caremark. We know that finding the right care staff for our clients is crucial. Some people are natural carers and some are completely new to it but we find that with good training and support, ordinary people can be turned into extraordinary care workers! But don’t take our word for it, care worker Mary said how she felt like she was making a real difference: “It was really nice to know that I could phone my Supervisor at any time and get help and support if I needed it. I never felt alone. “I really liked the fact too that

praise from our clients was passed on to us. It makes you feel that you are really doing something worthwhile!”

It was really nice to know that I could phone my Supervisor at any time and get help and support if I needed it. I never felt alone. Recruiting the right people is crucial and so it is important that we attract and retain the very best

Caring, as a profession, offers both men and women an opportunity to embark on a career which can bring extraordinary rewards and lead to further studies and qualifications in social care. For others, the chance to increase their skills and learn new ones is all important. Whatever your dreams, caring is a special job and so much more than just a pay packet. Being able to care for people of all ages and abilities and support them to lead safer, fuller lives, at home where they want to me brings a sense of fulfillment and purpose, not always found in other occupations. Birds in distress keep Tarnya busy Snakes alive! RSPCA Montage of helped creatures

Nature lover Tarnya Knight has been helping birds who have had a tough start in life. In her role as wildlife rescuer Tarnya, from Horsham-based international wildlife charity the Born Free Foundation, has been busy taking care of a wide range of baby birds.

In one incident a pair of beautiful tawny owlets was spotted next to a fallen tree in West Chiltington. The owlets were taken to the Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue in Surrey, for rearing and rehabilitation. Like all wild animals in the UK, birds can be injured by cars and machinery, caught in fencing and

rubbish, poisoned by pesticides, and even deliberately attacked. However, in spring and early summer, when fledglings leave the nest, they can often be found sitting on the ground or hopping about. Tarnya, who works alongside a number of local wildlife sanctuaries in her role as Programmes Support Coordinator at Born Free, said: “Unless fledglings are in immediate danger or injured, it is often best to leave them be. On the other hand displaced nestlings, which are birds that have not yet fledged or left the nest, will need to be taken into care. If you are concerned please always contact your local wildlife rescue for advice before you intervene.” In April Tarnya was contacted to assist with four tiny starlings, whose nest had been disturbed by garden maintenance. Thankfully they have all survived and have been released. Other rescued birds which have been brought in to receive specialist care this spring have included collared doves, robins, blackbirds, swifts, crows jackdaws and a tiny Moorhen chick, who still needs to ‘grow into’ his feet! Samson makes school history with study award A pupil who created a little piece of history for his Horsham school is heading to London to pick up a medal after achieving a gold in the British Biology Olympiad. Year 13 student Samson Charles, 17, will be attending an awards ceremony with other medal winners at the Royal Institution next Thursday. The award has placed Samson in the top 6.6% of the 7200 students who took part nationally. Samson, who has won the academic prize for Biology for the past two years at Christ’s Hospital and is the school’s first gold winner in the contest. He said: “I have always enjoyed and been fascinated by Biology, and try to learn as much as I can

Dragon boats racers sought from local firms More dragon boat racers from local firms are sought to help a hospice raise funds. Plenty of companies are already signed up for the St Catherine’s Hospice Chinese Dragon Festival on September 4 from 10am to 4pm at Tilgate Park, Crawley. But the hospice says there is still time for local businesses to sign up for one of the hospice’s busiest and biggest fundraisers. Hundreds of people watch and cheer teams as they race 40ft traditional Chinese Dragon Boats. After previously watching the festival, Lisa Hammer from Winters Electrical in Three Bridges encouraged her work colleagues to enter a team last year. She said:

“I’d always enjoyed the day but actually participating was a thrill on another level. We had an office vote for a team name and fancy dress theme and everyone got involved in fundraising including our clients who were more than happy to be asked. We couldn’t believe how easy and fun raising our sponsorship was and we were thrilled to raise more than £2,500.” Last year a new record for fastest finishing time in thirteen years of Dragon Boat races was created by Virgin Active. As well as being a fantastic chance for businesses to support their local hospice, the Dragon Boat

I have always enjoyed and been fascinated by Biology, and try to learn as much as I can about it hard, and being the first person from Christ’s Hospital to achieve this felt great. Knowing that I’d got the prize was a brilliant affirmation that all of my hard

work in Biology has paid off, and I am now totally sure that this is a subject that I want to continue studying when I leave school.” Currently studying A level Biology, Chemistry and Archaeology at Christ’s Hospital, Samson hopes to go to the university of Bath to study Biochemistry in the autumn. The British Biology Olympiad is a national competition for A level and IB pupils run by the Royal Society of Biology. Pupils from Christ’s Hospital were put forward for the competition, winning one silver and eight bronze medals, while 14 other pupils were either commended or highly commended.

Women tackle car maintenance brilliantly

Women learned car maintenance skills in a session at Broadbridge Heath. All ten of them emerged with flying colours from a “Ladies Night” car maintenance course at family-run Skoda dealership Station Garage. The evening event was the seventh run at the garage. Throughout the evening the women were provided with an opportunity to learn basic car mechanics such as how to change a tyre or monitor pounds per square inch tyre pressure, check oil and water levels or jump start a vehicle, all in a safe and secure environment. Challenges included identifying dashboard warning signals and knowing when to either take

immediate action or seek mechanical help at a later stage using a red, amber and green system, as well as detecting key elements under the bonnet such as a car’s radiator and coolant input and oil dipstick. At the end of the evening, the women were invited to put their new-found knowledge to the test in a tyre-changing competition. All ten completed the challenge without hesitation, which the garage said was a great effort considering none of them knew how to change a tyre just a few hours before. Sara Bailey, who attended the course, said: “The Ladies night held at Station Garage was a brilliant evening, very informative and we all put at ease and were never made to feel like we were asking silly questions. It was a really helpful

event and this weekend I will be putting my new -found knowledge to the test” During the course of the evening all the women were treated to drinks and nibbles and given the opportunity to pose as many car related questions they liked to Station Garage’s Master Technician Paul Westbrook and Technician Stuart Miller who between them have more than 30 years of experience in the motoring industry. James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage, said:“Women now account for about 40% of registered car keepers within the UK1 yet statistics suggest that female drivers feel less confident than their male counterparts about car maintenance, with many opting to contact roadside assistance rather than getting hands on with their vehicles. “We have been delighted with the success of our Ladies Night events with this last one proving just as popular with local women. Everyone that participated seemed to really enjoy themselves and walked away a lot more confident with their new-found car knowledge.” The next Ladies Night workshop at Station Garage will be on September 15. The event is free to attend but spaces are limited and those interested in taking part are encouraged to email events@ stationgarage.skoda.co.uk ASAP to register their attendance and avoid disappointment.

Horsham School of Dance comes to The Capitol Horsham School of Dance are to present a brand new ballet, based on the classic children’s adventure story, ‘The Lion, The witch and The Wardrobe’. Dance teacher, Annie Dunkley, said: “I wanted to create something that would make the most of our talented students’ abilities. “Many of them are chosen to perform in the Pantomimes each year, at Horsham, Crawley and Dorking, and this year we are celebrating the success of one student in particular, Georgia Howlett, who has gained a place at one of the world’s top vocational ballet schools, Central School of Ballet in London”. Georgia, who currently attends Millais School, will play The Witch in the production, alongside a colourful cast of characters involving the school’s 90 or so pupils. As well as RAD ballet, the school is proud of it’s success in ISTD tap and modern classes. The

Interview with The Executioner As with most things mediaeval, crime and punishment were a grim affair. Murderers were given the same trials as apple thieves and both usually met the same grizzly end. Mediaeval life was a terrifying one. But nothing brings that reality to light, more than the gruesome and frightening apparition that is the Executioner. Dressed in all black, wielding an axe or scythe, this fearsome arbiter of the law was once all that stood between the good folk of the realm and the gallows. Gilbert Savage the Executioner is resplendent in black, and is always equipped with his ‘heading axe’, block, ropes, knives, and the other ‘tools’ of his gruesome trade. During these turbulent times in our nation’s history the nature of crime and punishment included hanging, mutilation, and decapitation! The ‘Executioner’, that very necessary public ‘functionary’ would, at the direction of Court and Crown, brand, flog, hang, disembowel, behead and mutilate offenders, from the low born to the very highest in the land; for their ‘crimes’ – crimes against property, crimes against individuals, and crimes against the very Crown itself, ……….all in the pursuit of justice!

How did you get into being an executioner? The executioner is not a popular person. I would have been drawn from the lower level of society, with the skills of a butcher!

What is the strangest service you have had to provide? The strangest service?.......all the things I do are ‘strange’......I flogg, brand, burn, behead, disembowel .....as is required by the law.......I offer the full range of services!!!

Do you have to be brave to be an executioner? No, you don’t need to be brave, just have a strong stomach and the ability to totally disregard the sufferings of others......and their pleas.

Where do you buy the tools of your trade? All my tools are made by local blacksmiths.

How long does it to take to train as an executioner? There is no formal training......I would have seen lots of executions. And may gave served a form of apprenticeship with a form experienced executioner but really, you learn on the job.

What did you practice on? Practice!......on people!!!.......I could have honed by axe stroke on vegetables.......cutting through a cabbage feels and sounds like a neck!!!

What does the phrase ‘to be kissed by the Devil’ mean? To be branded on the face as a thief, for stealing

What does it mean if you are ‘earmarked’? You would have your ear nailed to the pillory

second act of the show will include an exciting array of dances, showcasing students’ talent in modern, musical theatre, tap and contemporary dance. Organisers promise there will be something for everyone! The show, entitled ‘Rhythm of Dance’, will be performed on July 8 and 9, at the Capitol Theatre, and tickets can be obtained from the Capitol Box Office.

Horsham’s QM Studios hits the right note Music Martin Read - Entertainment Budding and established musicians in the district are relishing practising and recording at the state of the art QM Studios in Horsham’s Dukes Square The Drill Hall. In 1999 sound engineer Graham Ansell was a co-founder of the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA) which operates to promote live music in the district. Graham was keen for the Alliance to provide a local rehearsal facility and when Horsham District Council (HDC) offered a lease on the vacant building, he used his joinery skills to convert the building, helped by a group of volunteers and Lottery funding. The Drill Hall was built for the local Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1927 and after the Territorial Army moved out, HDC became custodians and landlords of the buildings. Today Mandy Ansell, the late Graham’s wife, manages

the busy studios with Adam Gellibrand, Adam telling us: “The studios are in the former Quartermaster’s stores – hence our name!” Mandy adding: “When we first set up here there was no running water or toilet but from humble beginnings we’ve been able to up-grade the professional facilities to meet the needs of modern musicians.” The studios were opened by Kenny Jones, locally based former drummer with The Who. Three rehearsal rooms are in constant use by local bands, with backline – drum kits, amplifiers and PA systems – permanently installed. Mandy and Adam are justifiably proud of what they provide, in particular the Control Room, equiped with the latest digital recording facilities and a recently completed vocal booth providing greater flexibility for recording projects. Percussion workshops, outreach courses and community therapy sessions – led by Adam and assisted by Kay Whiteley - are among other activities offered at the stu-

dios for local community organisations, including the Richmond Fellowship Mental Health Charity, schools and Scout groups. Adam also runs Boom Tribe, Horsham’s Samba Band with Nick Jenkins. Mandy says: “We keep our hire fees at a reasonable level to encourage participation, promoting live music in the district.” Adam sums up: “We’ve fully refurbished, incorporating wheelchair access and it’s great that we’ve been recognised with accreditation as an approved centre for RSL (Rock School) music exams.” The lively notice board showcases many opportunities for musicians – both playing vacancies and positions sought, confirming that QM Studios is the thriving hub of our district’s many enthusiastic music makers. QM Studios operates as part of the HDLMA which is a not for profit enterprise working in partnership with HDC, supported in particular by Community Development Officer Nick Jenkins. www.qmstudios.co.uk – qmstudios@btinternet.com – 07813 049666

Horsham first time buyer hops onto the ladder First time buyer Oli Leslie is settling into his new home in Horsham after joining forces with his family to buy a house at David Wilson Homes’ new development, Wickhurst Green. Oli, 24, his dad Andy and step mum Liz are part of a growing number of families helping their children onto the property ladder while making a smart investment for themselves. New research suggests parents will be involved in 25% of house deals this year and for Oli and his family, the arrangement has proven mutually beneficial. “The most important thing for me was to get Oli on the ladder but if it does make a return for us that’s great,” said Andy, 64. “It would have been difficult for him to get a mortgage having recently left university and being self-employed so I wanted to help him. I know of a lot of parents who are doing similar things to help their children get onto the ladder. As a mum or dad you always want to do everything you can to help your kids get the best start in life.” Andy, who heads up an aviation company, and Liz will retain a stake in the three-bedroom detached property so are likely to see a better return on their investment than they would have if the money was kept in a traditional savings account. Oli said: “I’m really grateful to my dad and Liz for helping me out. We were originally looking at flats but actually we decided a

three bedroom detached house here would be a much better investment for all of us. It’s in a really nice area.” Wickhurst Green features a range of three and four bedroom homes. Set in the village of Broadbridge Heath it benefits from green surroundings while having fantastic commuter links. “It’s really close to the A24 so it’s easy to get to places,” Oli said. “You can’t hear the road though, I’m in a nice little cul de sac and the neighbours are nice.” To find out more about David Wilson Homes at Wickhurst Green visit www.dwh.co.uk or call 0844 5710 385.

Pulborough host county competition Pulborough beat Arundel in the league

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Pulborough Bowls Club began their week on a high, with yet another very convincing win in the West Sussex Bowls League, Division 2, against Arundel. 4 rinks played 21 ends and on home turf, the Pulborough players excelled, with 3 rink wins and a draw. Skip, Len Adsett and team, had a tough time after pulling back a deficit in the first half of the game to be 11 all on end 15, then pull ahead by 3 points, only to drop a 3 on the final end to finish 17/17. Captain Paul Day and team won 9 ends in a row to finish 18/12 ahead

and skip, Alan Jordan, with Fred Bushby, Colin Pardy and Malcolm Gray won, finishing 19 points ahead on 28/9. The accolade of top rink for the game went to John Brown, with lead, Steve Adsett, number 2, Mike Richards and number 3, Chris Etherington, after winning all but 5 ends to finish 25 points ahead of Arundel on 33/8. The final result was 96/46 to Pulborough and another 9 league points, putting them close to the top of the table with games in hand over their closest rivals. 3 days later, the Pulborough team travelled to Littlehampton to face Maltravers on their return fixture, after previously winning 68/43 at

home earlier in the month. Of the 4 triples that played, 3 came back victorious, carrying Pulborough to a narrow 68/62 win. Captain for the day, Mick Ayling, coped with the pressure to lead his team of Mike Richards and George Lewis, to a 10 point win and top rink for the day, 26/16. A narrow defeat at Stedham on Saturday showed that Pulborough can be beaten. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Len Adsett, with lead Kath Ayling and number 2, Steve Adsett, 18/13. The final score was 48/41 to Stedham. Pulborough BC had the honour of hosting the Sussex County Bowls Two Wood Singles Competition. Thankfully the weather stayed dry and after a huge amount of behind the scenes preparation and preening of the green, play started at 9.30am with the first of 4 rounds, leading to the final round at 3pm. The starting 19 players were whittled down to just 2 winners by the end of the day, one of which was our own Pulborough player, John Brown, who will now go on to play in the quarter finals in Lewes on July 12. Pulborough player, Steve Adsett, played in the County Un-badged Singles competition against Mick Campbell from Crablands and is now through to the quarter finals after a tight 21/19 victory, a fantastic achievement in just his second full year of bowling.

Billingshurst pair through in county competition Bowls Keith Barraclough - Billingshurst BC Drawn at home John Bennett and Barry Gilbert played Clive Marchant and Adam Tuffin from Southwick Park in the county pairs. The home pair started cautiously and after the 6th end the scores were level at 6 all. Things then brightened up with the hosts picking up a count of 5 and thereafter managed to keep their noses in front. On end 21, with the score 20-16 in favour of the Billingshurst pair, the hosts restricted their opponents to a count of 3 thus running out worthy winners 20-19. In the next round the Billingshurst pair will play away at Hollingbury Park BC. Haslemere 48 – 54 Billingshurst In the first round of the Holbrook Cup, defending champions Billingshurst were drawn away at Haslemere. Not to be put

off by being up against one of their bogey teams, Billingshurst played purposefully, staying in touch all the way. With one end to go across each of the 3 rinks the visitors found themselves all square. ‘Hurst then won 2 of the final 3 ends across the board to take the match by 6 shots. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Ray Neal, Anita Colliety & Alan Readshaw (+8). In the next round either Stedham or Liphook will be hosting Billingshurst. Stan Morgan, Alan Knight & Betty Weller won 16-15 Marion Clark, Barry Gilbert & John Bennett lost 20-17 Ray Neal, Anita Colliety & Alan Readshaw won 21-13 Billingshurst 49 – 24 Handcross In a match cut short by a hailstorm followed by torrential rain, Billingshurst were leading Handcross 49-24. Leading rink for ‘Hurst at curtailment went to Bill Spence, John Lucas & Anita Colliety (+17).

Local rider takes Atlantis trio selected for Hickstead victory

National Championships Freya Fulcher, Rebecca Barber and Lily Davis have won through to national finals

Swimming

Three of Atlantis Swimming

Club’s top swimmers have qualified to represent the club at the national swimming champion-

ships in Sheffield at the end of July. Sixteen year old Lily Davis has once again qualified for the GB national swimming championships and will be competing in the 100m breast stroke and the 50m breast stroke for which she is currently ranked seventh in the UK. Lily is no stranger to competing at this level and hopes to be amongst the medal contenders. Freya Fulcher has qualified to represent Atlantis at the Home Nations Championships in the 100m backstroke event. Freya has been perfecting backstroke over the last season under the guidance of her coach Andy Lobley and is now proving a formidable talent. Youngest of the Atlantis trio -13 year old multi talented Rebecca Barber - is making her debut at the Home Nations Championships. She has qualified in the 200m breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. To reach the national finals all three girls have put in many hours of training during numerous early morning and evening sessions and the club wish them luck at the nationals. Other recent notable performances from the younger swimmers at the club were bronze medals for Michael Pallister and Olivia Round Pitman at the South East Regional Championships last month.

David Simpson riding Gotti Van Paemel won the Derby trial

Show jumping Local show jumper David Simpson has won a prestigious show jumping class at the Hickstead Derby equestrian meeting. Riding George Alcock’s 10-yearold grey gelding Gotti Van Paemel the Horsham based rider notched up a win in the Bunn Leisure Derby Trial. Simpson and Gotti proved the only pair to jump clear in both rounds over an imposing 1.60m track to put them into the iconic Hickstead Derby. After going last in the jump off against rivals William Funnell and

Shane Breen, who both incurred faults, Simpson was left to go clear to secure his first big win at Hickstead. Simpson said: “I thought to myself that if the boys went clear then I’d jump a few fences, make sure he’s happy, then pull him up and give him a pat, because I knew I’d come third and then I could save him for the Derby. But as the other two boys had a fence down, I knew I could win it. Simpson eventually finished joint 19th in Sunday’s Derby.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last weekend was frustrating for Sussex Premier League clubs, miserable weather disrupting the programme.

Six matches were scheduled but with only two results – a surprising outcome in the only full length match (at Hastings) where the hosts declared on 183-7 and then bowled out perennial challengers Preston Nomads for just 95. At Horsham the mouth-watering local derby with Roffey was controversially called off after pro-

tracted inspections, following four stoppages and then heavier rain, the umpires deeming the conditions unsafe to continue the match because of a saturated wicket close to the match strip. Unusually cautious Roffey’s innings was closed on 146-6 after 50 overs. The slow, wet outfield was not conducive to fast scoring but Horsham’s strong

Horsham successful at Sussex gymnastic competition Success at the Sussex Invitational for Horsham’s artistic squad

Gymnastics Dave Smith - Sports Editor The Horsham Gymnastic Centre’s women’s artistic squad came away from the Sussex Invitational competition with a haul of medals. A total of 9 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals were taken home as well as a further 8 top 10 positions. In the competition the gymnasts competed for an overall placing within their age group as well as an overall placing as a member of the Sussex County Squad.

The Level 5 Out of Age category saw Lily Garrard place 4th in her age group as well as taking a gold medal as a member of the county squad. Morgan Millar competed exceptionally well winning her age category by over 2 whole marks. In the Level 5 In Age competition Horsham did extremely well with Jess Harmer finishing 10th, Evie Harris-Duff 9th, Elisha Venturini 4th, Tabitha Lees 2nd and Brooke Stocker crowned the winner. In the Out of Age Level 4 Phoebe Light was placed 5th overall within her age band with Poppy Griggs

coming 3rd and Izzy Carr 2nd for their age categories. The combined ages for this level for Sussex saw Phoebe take 8th, Poppy 4th and Izzy 3rd. In the Out of Age Level 3 section Millie Craven was placed 1st within her age category as well as 2nd in the combined Sussex section; missing out on 1st by just 0.15. Lola McNaughton competed very well in her first Level 4 In Age competition taking the gold medal for her age category by over a whole mark as well as taking gold in the Sussex category. In the final round of the day Francesca Clark competed in the Level 2 Out of Age competition picking up a gold medal for both her age category and the Sussex squad section. Honesty South competed in her first Espoir Challenge F.I.G level competition gained valuable experience eventually finishing 4th in the combined section and 3rd in the Sussex squad section. Scarlett Tidy finished in overall 2nd place in this competition by a margin of just 0.1 and also claimed the gold medal for the Sussex squad section. All the Horsham gymnasts involved demonstrated new skills in their routines making it a very positive and successful competition for the squad.

upper order made them favourites had the game continued, clear blue skies after the abandonment escalating the disappointment. Elsewhere, Brighton walloped Worthing by 97 runs in a T20 match, while only 11.4 overs were possible at Billingshurst and 10.3 at Cuckfield. East Grinstead were doubly unlucky - after their wasted

journey to Billingshurst, their own pitch at was waterlogged, causing abandonment of their match against the Sussex Development XI on Sunday. Coming up to the half way stage of the season, with 207 points Horsham remain 45 ahead of Cuckfield with Roffey third on 153, but with a game in hand. Billingshurst prop up the table on 72 points, six behind Worthing and 25 adrift of Brighton & Hove. Who will win the league? With ten games to play Horsham are unquestionably in the driving seat, their invigorated batting line up enabling them to post more substantial totals and they have the leading wicket taker, habitual winner of the league bowling award – Michael Munday - with 30 scalps to date. Nomads (fourth) do not seem to be the force of old and Cuckfield and Roffey currently have considerable ground to make up, although Roffey showed last year that a strong finish can deliver the title. Hopefully the weather will relent, eliminating the lottery factor. Tomorrow (Saturday), with a poor interim forecast, Horsham are due to visit fifth in the table East Grinstead, where Monday’s Sussex 2nd XI game had to be switched to Blackstone because the Saint Hill Road ground was unfit. Roffey entertain Brighton & Hove (ninth), while Billingshurst go to Fulking to take on Preston Nomads.
