Horsham mum staging EU vote anti-hate picnic phil dennett

News Editor

A Horsham mother is staging a peace picnic this weekend after being disgusted by abuse attacks linked to the vote to quit the EC. Nationally there have been several incidents of hate abuse against people because of the historic referendum decision to quit the European Union and one alleged incident at Southwater is being investigated. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has expressed her concern about the attacks. Now Jemma Warren, 27, has organised a United Horsham Picnic for The People on Sunday at the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park. Jemma is putting aside her own personal cancer battle against Hodgkin Lymphoma, for which she is receiving chemotherapy, to organise the antihate picnic on July 10 at noon. Jemma, who lives at Greenfinch Way, Horsham, with

partner Nicholas Sheridan and children Joel, 5, and Erin, eight months, said: “I am hoping people will make signs and carry placards. It’s not a protest. It’s a message. “Just because we don’t witness a lot of abuse here it

Just because we don’t witness a lot of abuse here it doesn’t mean we can’t speak up against it doesn’t mean we can’t speak up against it. Now is the time to show our feelings. You can stand back or you can take action and I think it is time to take action. There has to be a stand against hatred, not just locally but nationally. The past few days have been emotional and there has been a lot of mud slinging nationally. At the latest count about 150 people have said they are coming to the picnic.”

Nightingale FOOTGOLF SUMMER Road, HorshamSPECIAL!

Katy Bourne said: “It deeply saddens me that, since the EU referendum, reports of hate crime appear to have increased nationally. “Like many, I have no time for bigotry and believe that no one should be singled out and victimised because of their race, faith, sexuality, gender or disability. “Although I welcome the news that Sussex Police has not seen an increase in reports of hate crime locally, I do know that many minority groups have not always had the same trust in the police and this often leads to a reluctance to report. As PCC, I am determined to improve this for everyone in Sussex which is why I fully support any initiative that tackles hate crime, a key priority in my Police Crime Plan”. Meanwhile Jemma looks forward to completing her last two chemotherapy sessions, having been given the “allclear”. She said: “It is curable, which is good. I am officially in remission. I am actually cancer free, but I have to complete the course.”

Drunks and other troublemakers face bans when councillors decide in September about a plan to combat antisocial behaviour across the district. The relatively recent problem of “parkour|” obstacle challenges in towns is among those being tackled. Councillors were due to debate the issue last week, but the level of public response has been so great that a decision by Horsham District Council has been delayed until September 7. A council spokeswoman said: “Due to the substantial number of comments we received as a result of the public consultation on the Public Spaces Protection Order we need longer to do a full analysis of the comments and therefore this will now be discussed at the Full Council meeting on Wednesday September 7 and not on Wednesday June 29 as previously stated.” The council wants to introduce a Public Spaces Protection Order to prohibit certain antisocial activities within Horsham district which it considers are detrimental to the local community. A public consultation took place from May 16 to June 13 on the council’s web site where residents were requested to have their say on the proposals in advance of a recommendation going to full council. Trouble-makers who would be tackled by the order would be people involved in six key categories they are •Anti-social consumption of alcohol in public spaces across the district;

•Parkour or free-running in Horsham town centre which can cause substantial damage to property; •Anti-social use of vehicles across the district where individuals meet in public places, play loud music, race and cause harassment to residents and other road users; •Anti-social use of horse drawn vehicles across the district; racing and time trials which block dual carriageways presenting significant danger to other road users; •Dog fouling across the district on any land open to the air to which the public has access; •Control of dogs across the district; there are currently no restrictions to control dogs within Horsham district creating incidents where livestock are attacked. A condition will be included in the Order whereby the dog owner must put their dog on a lead if asked to do so by a relevant person in a public space. Parkour is based on a training discipline where people go from one point to another using vaults, jumps, climbs and other means, and it has become popular in towns. By seeking to introduce a Public Space Order, the council is using its powers under Section 59 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to prohibit certain anti-social behaviours throughout Horsham district. The orders give councils and police additional powers and greater flexibility to tackle anti-social behaviour in defined geographical areas.

Life saver Stuart wins recognition Sgt McConachie receives award

A police officer who helped save a man’s life in an incident at Henfield is among people recognised for their contribution for policing in West Sussex. Sergeant Stuart McConachie went from his Horsham base to a reported assault in Henfield in April last year. He found a man in his mid-20s with a serious injury to his arm and immediately gave first aid. A qualified public order medic, he was able to apply a tourniquet and his actions both before and after the paramedics arrived helped save the man’s life. On his Divisional Commendation, Sgt McConachie said: “It’s very humbling to be recognised in this way. “I’m proud to have been nominated but just pleased that I was able to help. I think I’ve made my family proud too, which is nice.” Sgt McConachie, now serving in Chichester, was among police officers, staff, special constables, volunteers and members of the local community from across West Sussex have all been recognised for their outstanding contribution in an awards ceremony at Arundel castle. Presentations were awarded by the High Sheriff of West Sussex

Mark Spofforth and temporary Deputy Chief Constable Robin Smith. Officers recognised also included PC Amanda Phipps who received a Divisional Commendation for her quick thinking and actions which helped save a two-week-old baby. Last August, a car was seen driving erratically in Crawley and was pulled over by PC Phipps and her colleague. Inside were a couple desperately seeking medical attention for their newborn child who had stopped breathing. PC Phipps administered CPR in the back seat while the family was taken to Crawley Hospital. The baby started breathing again en route and made a full recovery in East Surrey Hospital three days later. Amanda said: “When I initially saw the baby I was very concerned that such a young child wasn’t breathing. I have two young children myself and it was a bit close to home. “I thought I needed to do something and instinct just kicked in so I started carrying out rescues. When the baby made a noise and subsequently moved I thought that was a good sign but continued with the breaths until we got to the hospital.

Prestigious ‘Pink’ day raises £6,000 Slinfold Golf & Country Club’s ‘Flag Ship’ golf day, the Brenda Jackson Charity Cup - ‘Pink Day’ was once again a resounding success. The sixth annual Pink Day saw 100 enthusiastic golfers, resplendent in pink, competing for the coveted Charity Cup. The receptionists, bar staff, helpers, even the hard working green keepers, entered into the spirit of the day, wearing various shades of pink - from shirts and skirts, to trousers and hats - a sea of pink all around. Pink fairy cakes and flags on the greens, all helped to set the scene for the Texas scramble competition. As always for Pink Day, the golf course was beautifully presented with exquisite fairways and greens. The only negative, and beyond the organisers’ control, the British weather - the wind picked up and the rain swept in. A couple of groups stayed dry (the eventual winners and the second placed team); the remaining twenty-three teams, thankfully, only endured a couple of holes in the deluge. Spirits far from dampened, the ‘Pink’ player gathered in the Mess bar for the traditional auction and prize presentations. There were thirteen auction

lots, ranging from 4 VIP tickets for ‘Proms in the Park’ and ‘BBC Live in Hyde Park’ to 4 balls at prestigious Cowdray Park and Foxhills. Steered by the skilful auctioneering of Freddy Lane, the auction alone raised £1,410. As ever, everyone was a winner on this memorable day, no more so than the two worthy chari-

They would like to thank Slinfold G & CC and staff, the hard-working volunteers, those who have made donations and of course the support of the players ties that benefit from Pink Day, Macmillan Nurses, Midhurst and Breast Cancer NOW, who share the proceeds equally. The actual winners of The Brenda Jackson Charity Cup were Clive Wright [7], Jonathan Davies [13], Kevin Crump [8] and Graham Billinghurst [12] with an impressive 57 points! One point behind, and in second place, were Mark

Tuppen, Matthew, Nigel Richards and Chris Neate. Third were Sarah Teversham, Andy Teversham, Jan Jones and Wayne Short, with 58.5. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Mary Benson, Danielle Jones and Sue Scaife, for the ladies, and the men, Kevin Crump, John Jordan and Richard Northcott. Presentations completed, it was time to appreciate just how overwhelming the support had been for Pink Day. With significant donations from the Red Lyon (Slinfold), Chartwell Management Inc., Beverley Young, friends and the ‘Pink’ golfers, Pink Day 2016 raised a staggering £6,000! The annual event has now collected £34,250 over the past six years, and, as previously, 100% of all of this year’s monies went to charity. Organisers, Barbara Wilson and Peter Jackson, announced they “would like thank to Slinfold G & CC and staff, the hard-working volunteers, those who have made donations, and of course the support of the players in continuing to make Pink Day such a successful and enjoyable day! “A date for the calendar - Pink Day next year, Wednesday 28th June 2017, when hopefully we will top £40,000!”

The woman, a 22-year-old woman from Hove, had left the Shepherd and Dog Pub in Fulking at 9.30pm on June 20 and contacted a friend to say she was walking near Devil’s Dyke. When she did not return to her friend’s house as expected, he rang police. Officers attended and found her on Devil’s Dyke Road. She told officers she had been punched in the face and raped

The ceremony was hosted by one of last year’s short listed authors, Matt Whyman, author of ‘The Savages’. The authors who ran workshops during the day and came to the ceremony were Ali Sparkes author of ‘Car-Jacked’ , Sam Hepburn author of ‘If You Were Me’ and Eve Ainsworth. The Blue Peter Book award winning author, Ali ran a workshop for fifty Year 9 and Year 10 students centred on the plot of ‘Car-Jacked’. Sam Hepburn enthralled students in her workshop and during the awards ceremony with her stories about Afghanistan refugees. Year 10 student Leo Ghorishi was Matt’s co-host helped by Millie Finney. Students from each of the year groups read reviews of their favourite books; one of the stand out contributions was by Oliver Loveridge, with a piece of creative writing inspired by Frances Hardinge’s ‘The Lie Tree’. Winners on the day were Year 6 Category, ‘The Imaginary’ by AF Harrold; KS3 Years 7 and 8 Category, ‘7 Days’ by Eve Ainsworth; KS4 Years 9 and 10 , ‘Car-Jacked’ by Ali Sparkes; Sixth Form, Staff and parents Category , ‘The Bees’ by Laline Paull. Former pupil part of college’s triple treat Visitors to Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham have a triple arts treat this month. Until July 22 the three current Artists-in-Residence at the school will have an exhibition of the work they have produced whilst in residency, entitled Three of Something, in the Art School. Amelia Phillips is a Fine Art Printmaker who graduated from Falmouth University in 2014 and is a former pupil of Christ’s Hospital. Upon graduating she has shown her work in both group exhibitions and solo shows throughout the UK. Amelia said: “As an observer and as an artist I have always had a deep interest in the world of decay and deterioration; constantly on the lookout for objects and surfaces that have been transformed and weathered by man and by nature. I think the worn appearance of these things appeals to me and engages me because one gains a sense of time and history; they have a past, discharging unknown stories and an element of surprise. “

Rosanna Catterall is a Sussex based artist, graduating from a BA in Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art in 2012. She won the Midas award and Wilhelmina Barnes-Graham travel to Italy scholarship upon graduating and has exhibited in both the UK and internationally. She was an artist in residence at Tenjinyama studio in Sapporo, Japan and will also take part in the interdisciplinary residency at Hospitalfield, Scotland this summer. Rosanna says her work is grounded in an open enquiry into the nature of practice, preparation, waiting, failure, and non-conclusion. Kit Mead is an artist who has been based in Scotland and England over the past few years. He says his practice articulates the presence of different temporal experiences by exploring the dynamics of uncertainty and transition created in the changing representation of environments and objects along with the collapsing boundaries between the real and the virtual.

Youngsters perform with passion

Students for a digital age get improved facilities Set for a digital age

Passion took centre stage as youngsters put their heart and soul into a touching musical about an orphan girl. Key Stage 3 pupils at the Towers Convent School, Upper Beeding, started in 1903, delivered what the head teacher described as a truly memorable production of the big stage and film hit Annie which was always gripping, at times moving, frequently funny and certainly entertaining throughout. The emotional story tells how the life of an orphan girl is transformed.

find us on facebook horsham.news

School Headmistress Clare Trelfa said: “All pupils worked together with focus and commitment, telling the story together in such a supportive way that the audience was enthralled. The passionate exuberance of the large ensemble , which included every single pupil in Key Stage 3, was breathtaking and their love of the show was infectious. We are indebted to all those Year 10 pupils who were such a support backstage as well as for their fabulous choreography.”

Lord David Blunkett officially opened the facilities in May and they are being fine-tuned for the new term . Story of refusal to be beaten Behind the opening of a restored Victorian glasshouse is a story of refusal to allow one of the few survivors of its type to be lost to future generations. The glasshouse at historic St Mary’s Bramber was originally built in the 1890s by prestigious horticultural engineers John Weeks of Chelsea, employed by the then owners of St Mary’s, The Hon. Gwendoline and Algernon Bourke. Gwendoline was a member of the Sloane-Stanley family, owners of Chelsea Manor and descendants of Sir Hans Sloane of Chelsea Physic Garden fame. The Hon. Algernon Bourke was second son of the Earl of Mayo, Viceroy of India, and his wife, Blanche Wyndham of Petworth House. The couple employed Weeks to construct the walled kitchengarden, pineapple pits, potting sheds, apple store, and five glasshouses. A century later it was thought that the historic Glasshouse, the only survivor out of the five original Victorian glasshouses, was beyond repair and would have to be demolished. Severely damaged in the 1987 storm, much of the timber-framing had collapsed, lime and mortar was crumbling, wet rot had set in to the wooden frame, fungus was rampant, and ivy had run riot right through the back wall.

About five years ago a visitor to the house, Terry Streamer, who happened to be a builder with his own workshops, decided that the Glasshouse could and should be saved, and would prove an asset to the house, with the potential for plant sales.Organisers say his enthusiasm for the project has been unbounded, giving his muchvalued time in making the sections in his workshop at weekends. Grateful supporters say his prodigious skills were matched only by his physical strength and endurance, his determination to succeed where others would have failed, and the high quality of his workmanship. Using old-type joints as employed by the original manufacturer, the machining of the modern metric timber had to be recalculated to imperial dimensions for any replacements, whilst preserving every piece of the original woodwork and fittings that could be saved. The project could not have succeeded but for generous donations of time, money and materials, with the principal funding donated by The Friends of St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s House and Gardens are open to the public on Thursdays and Sundays, 2pm – 6pm, when the restored Glasshouse can be visited. Further information

Former pupils advised youngsters to be flexible in their career paths as they gave college students an insight into professions. The successful returning “Old Blues”answered questions from year 10 pupils at Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham as they discussed topics such as finance, public affairs, medicine and the arts. The school said that one unifying theme amongst the different career paths explored was that whilst the world of work today presented more opportunities, an ability to be flexible and to adapt to quickly changing situations was essential. Pupils were told to identify what drives and motivates them before choosing their career, with

speakers stressing the importance of choosing a job that is interesting and enjoyable, in addition to paying well. The speakers also touched on the need to differentiate oneself from others in an increasingly competitive job market, pointing out that in our newly globalised world students are no longer competing for jobs on a national level, but also with people from Hong Kong, Mumbai and New York. The importance of building up an impressive CV consisting of more than just academic achievements was stressed; many of the speakers mentioned the appeal of a résumé that illustrated a proactive approach to work by a prospective employee.

Warning over dodgy holiday parking Holidaymakers have been warned to be beware of parking scams after 1,000 vehicles were found unattended in a boggy field. Sussex Police is working with Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council Trading Standards to investigate five companies suspected of operating illegally at the site near Gatwick Airport. The businesses claim to offer secure, reliable and affordable parking for people accessing the airport. Officers are urging drivers to beware of rogue traders and only book with approved parking companies, pending the investigation. Representatives from the police and the councils visited the field, the exact location of which is not being disclosed to protect customers’ vehicles. They found hundreds of keys to the vehicles in the boot of a car

which was left open and unlocked, while several others were covered in mud. Some keys were left in envelopes on the windscreens of the cars they belonged to, in full view of anyone passing by. Sergeant Darren Taylor said: “We visited the site with the district council and trading standards with the aim of exposing and taking firm action against these unscrupulous rogue companies. “I was disgusted but not overly surprised by the condition of the cars, because this appears to be an ongoing issue in the area. Some of the cars were stuck in thick mud and were unable to be towed away; let alone driven away. “But one of the most worrying things we found was an insecure vehicle with the keys to hundreds of others left in full view in the boot. We were on site for about 45 minutes and not a single person was present to challenge us during

that time. There was nothing stopping us from accessing the field and no CCTV cameras anywhere in sight, which is a real concern. “Clearly, what is being advertised by these companies and what is actually happening are two completely different things, and we’d like to make people aware of this. The simplest advice we can give is to look on the Gatwick Airport website for approved parking operators, and not opt for a company just because it is the cheapest. The chances are, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. “From a policing point of view, we will be looking at all the drivers associated with the companies and if there is any evidence of any criminal activity, we will act upon it accordingly.” Consumers can report issues by visiting www.westsussex.gov. uk/tsreport or by calling Citizens Advice on 03454 040506.

In the 19th century it was possible to travel by boat from London to Littlehampton on the south coast of England via Weybridge, Guildford, Pulborough and Arundel. This was just part of a once-extensive system of inland waterways covering England and Wales. The route was via the rivers Wey and Arun, linked between Shalford in Surrey, and Pallingham in Sussex, by the 23-mile Wey and Arun Canal. Although only one part of an extensive system, the Wey and Arun Canal formed a vital link, the only one between the south coast and the Thames, linking London and the busy river Thames with the English Channel - and beyond. The river Wey was made navigable from Weybridge to Guildford in 1653, and extended to Godalming 90 years later. The Arun has existed as a tidal navigation as far inland as Pallingham Quay, near Pulborough, since 1575.

“We all like a bargain when we go shopping, men and women alike, but it seems that back in the day, horses were interested too. “The story goes that a carthorse used to deliver the milk around Horsham, and on its rounds it used to get a treat at Shep’s the newsagents, North Street. If anyone knows anything more about this or a different version, the museum would be very pleased to hear from you. “This photograph is part of a small but fascinating photography exhibition, showing some iconic and occasionally amusing shots of shops in and around Horsham, dating from as early as 1875 right through to 1960.” Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm

Cllr Christian Mitchell, the new chairman of Horsham District Council, visited the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity in Five Oaks, which helps families to maximise potential for underfives with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties. He discussed the link-up with the charity, having chosen it as one of three charities to support during his term of office. Cllr Mitchell was invited to the charity, near Billingshurst, where he spent time observing a group of two to three year olds and their parents enjoying their play, exercises, games and songs. Cllr Mitchell said: “I am delighted to be able to support the vital service of the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity having seen the work they do which is truly inspirational. I met some of the staff today and experienced their passion to, and commitment for, what they do. “I also met some parents and observed them and their children participating in one of the charity’s early intervention sessions and heard how enormously grateful

they are for the service that they are receiving. “I recognise that Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, like so many other small charities, is facing challenges in this difficult economic climate, and during my chairmanship, I will do everything I can for this valuable and unique service.” Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager, who showed Cllr Mitchell the facilities, said: “We are proud and pleased to have been chosen as one of the Horsham District Council Chairman’s charities of the year for the next 12 months. It was a pleasure to meet councillor Mitchell today and to have the opportunity to show off our outstanding service to him. “It is truly wonderful to have this very local recognition and to have such an enthusiastic and genuine supporter in Mr Mitchell. I look forward to working with him to broaden our local business support, particularly as we look towards an exciting new phase of development for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity.”

Public response in Horsham amazing Thieves hit home twice Amazing total

Organisers of the “donation station” in Horsham described the response of the public as amazing. Residents gave goods worth more than £21,000 to the scheme for Cancer Research UK. They handed over 850 bags of good quality clothes, homewares, books, DVD’s and CD’s at Swan Walk Shopping Centre during the 2016 Cancer Research UK Donation Station held in the centre earlier this year. The value of these donations to Cancer Research UK is now said to be £21,250. Customers were invited to col-

lect a bag from the centre, fill it at home and return it when they were next shopping in the town. Gill Buchanan, Swan Walk Centre manager, said the response was amazing and added: “The Donation Station continues to be an important part of our community engagement activities as well as being the ultimate way to recycle. “This year’s result is another great success and over the years we have now raised well in excess of £140,000 for Cancer Research UK. “I cannot thank our customers enough as without their loyal support over the years none of

this would have been possible. I am also, as ever, very grateful to the East Street Cancer Research UK team who do all the hard work collecting and sorting through all the bags.“ “We continue to work closely with Community Award winner Victoria Godfrey and her team and all the donations are used to stock the Horsham Cancer Research UK stores in the first instance. I know that this really local link has resulted in the growing support for what had become an annual event for the whole town”.

Two burglaries that took place at the same cottage are being investigated by police. In each case high value property was stolen from the secluded cottage set in rural surroundings on the Sussex-Surrey border. Thieves first struck between June 3 and 8 taking a painting worth tens of thousands of pounds from its frame. Called “Hope in Prison”, it was painted in 1862 by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898). The second burglary was between June 17 and 20, and saw the theft of more than 40 pieces of silver cutlery and two silver candlesticks. Detective Constable Pippa Hannard, of the West Sussex Priority Crime Team, said: “We’d like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in relation to either burglary or who may have other information relating to the thefts. “We’d also like to speak to anyone who may recall seeing a blue people carrier - possibly a Vauxhall Zafira or similar - in the area on June 11 or 12.” Anyone able to help with information about the thefts, which happened at Linchmere, near Haslemere, is asked to email 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 797 of 08/06 concerning the painting theft and 813 of 20/06 concerning the silverware theft. Let Horsham’s Kitchen Store revitalise your home hub Business Martin Read - Reporter A visit to The Kitchen Store in Horsham’s East Street is an invigorating experience, opening up an inspirational world of creative, colourful designs. A glance through the window gives a flavour of what is on offer, but inside the store really opens up with stunning displays of 15 fully equipped, full-sized working kitchens. The store took over the elegant, architecturally-designed building last November and began trading from their sparkling new premises in March, quickly earning a much deserved local reputation for professionalism. Individuality is the key: customers are encouraged to have a good look round to see what might be achievable in their home, but there is no question of having to accept an off the peg solution. The Kitchen Store appreciate that every space is different and love nothing better than working in close partnership to create a bespoke design entirely suited to the customer’s home. Apart from the ultra modern, innovative range of equipment on display, including hobs, ovens and fridge freezers, the store has on show many examples of materials that can be used for worktops, from granites and woods to a comprehensive range of laminates. There

are a huge variety of cabinets to choose from and dozens of handles and many wall and flooring options, a customer enthusing: “Brilliant, I really can’t think of anything else that we need to do!” Hardly surprising then that The Kitchen Store won the Best Retailer Award at the 2015 Brighton & Hove Business Awards. And, the great thing is that the company supports local businesses, using Lancing’s Paula Rosa and Manhattan’s kitchen furniture, royal warrant appointed. The glazers are based in Horsham and the stone masons in Arundel. The Kitchen Store has additional outstanding showrooms in Hove and Lancing providing, with Horsham, a unique independently owned and run company with their own dedicated teams of designers. The five installers are matched to the customer’s particular interests and requirements. There is a real buzz about The Kitchen Store, Managing Director Alan Margetts telling the District Post: “We’re absolutely delighted to be in such a great location, part of a community with such great spirit – we’ve got a lot of energy and are really excited to be in Horsham!” Horsham Store Manager Mark Davies adds: “I just love being in Horsham, too – it’s a great place to be: our customers are all genuinely interested and are very pleasant,

a joy to work with! Our one to one service makes us stand out and for me there is nothing more satisfying than seeing through a new customer’s project to a successful conclusion.” Mark has been in the kitchen business for 15 years, learning his craft as a designer with a drawing board and continues: “We can produce something stunning to suit every size and style of kitchen and it’s great when a new customer comes in with a consultation wish list. We then work closely together and I round it off by going to see the finished installation to make sure that everything is perfect.” The Kitchen Store are in the quality market, but are competitively priced because they deal direct with manufacturers. FIRA is the UK’s leading furniture testing body and The Kitchen Store are the proud holder of their Gold Award for installation, much sought after in the industry – as is the recent “Investors in Gold” best practice accreditation. There is excellent customer feedback on the company’s website the kitchen is the hub of family life and The Kitchen Store would be delighted to revitalise your home with one of their unbeatable distinctive designs. But, be warned, a visit to The Kitchen Store in Horsham is full of temptation! www.thekitchenstore.co.uk

Music Festival returns to Horsham Sports Club

Revealed

Interview with a Mediaeval Peddler The Peddler was a common merchant and often went from town to town selling whatever goods he had to offer. The items could be anything from novelty items to candles or even tourist-styled souvenirs. Usually the Peddler was an enterprising business person but often stood to make meagre earnings as their profits were subjected to high taxation by the lords and nobles of the communities they did business within. One seldom found a rich Peddler and often it was a means of basic survival.

What is your name and occupation? I am Stephen the Peddler and I peddle my wares to the good folk of the villages hereabouts from my wooden hand cart. I walk many miles a day to earn my bread, it’s a hard life.

What is your aim in this life?

I hope to make enough money to sleep indoors, buy my bread and one day afford a matched pair of leather shoes for the lanes and highways of England are very hard upon my poor feet.

Tell us something about your life that we would not know.

As well as selling what goods I have on my cart, I also take news and the latest songs from London and the ports to villages along my way.

What skills are most important to you?

I must know what my customers want, and know how to drive a hard bargain. This season Flemish lace is very much sought after by the ladies. I must also be a good teller of tales and be able to play a pipe to draw a crowd.

Is your occupation a solitary one?

After a break of three years due to county cricket commitments, Horsham Sports Club hosted their annual Music Festival at the club on June 25. Over 900 people, who braved the early rain, were rewarded by an afternoon and evening of sunshine, and enjoyed a range of well-known hits, from a variety of bands as diverse as the age groups attending the festival. The whole event was masterminded by HSC events manager, Kim Walton, and Committee Member, Mike Manktelow, with Dave Baxter providing all the technical back up, including sound and staging. As ever with club fundraising

Walking from town to town and sleeping wherever I can, I find that the chances for company are slim. It is a lonely life, perhaps because last night I slept under a tree.

What do you eat and drink on a normal day?

Bread and cheese, some oats made into a porridge and perhaps a broth made of vegetables. For drink I have water and small beer.

What is your most prized possession?

My cart, without it I would have no way to transport my goods, and nothing to sleep under at night.

events, a band of willing volunteers worked tirelessly to set up the event and ensure all went smoothly on the day. This year’s line-up included Double Dare, Saviours of Soul, No Jacket Required, Rule the World, with Mainly Madness headlining the event. The atmosphere was fantastic throughout and feedback has been excellent. Next year’s event is already pencilled in for June 24 2017 Hungry and thirsty festival goers found plenty to keep them refreshed, with a range of food stalls offering fish and chips, hog roast, burgers and hot dogs, as well as a well-stocked beer tent. And there were no queues for the loos!

HSC is gaining a fine reputation for staging good quality live music, with regular band nights at the club throughout the year - the next gig is on September 2, when the ever popular Blunter Brothers return. If music isn’t your thing, then the next big fundraising events are on August 24, when Horsham Cricket Club play a Lashings XI, featuring top ex cricketers from around the world, followed by the annual Fireworks Evening on October 29. More details at: www.horshamsportsclub.com or email: hsc@ horshamsportsclub.com to be added to the HSC event

PETs POST Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Do you know your dog laws? abbi moon RSPCA

Owning and caring for a dog can be great fun and rewarding but it’s important you know about dog laws, in order to protect yourself and your dog You are required by law to care for your animals properly and take reasonable steps to ensure their welfare needs are met. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 owners must provide a suitable environment, a suitable diet, the ability to exhibit normal behaviour, protection from pain suffering, injury and disease and the need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals. There is a Code of Practice to help you meet the Animal Welfare Act 2006, you can find this at www. gov.uk

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that dogs must wear a collar and tag when in public. The tag must have your name and address on your telephone number is helpful too. Without a collar your dog may be treated as a stray. Should your dog go missing, your local authority should be your first point of contact. They have responsibility for strays and may charge you a fee to reclaim your dog. If a dog is not claimed within 7 days the local authority has the right to rehome the dog. Upto-date identification will make it easier for your dog to be reunited with you. The UK Highway Code states that dogs must be suitably restrained when in a vehicle so that they cannot distract you whilst driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. Use a seat belt harness, a dog

guard or crate for restraining your dog in the car. On

some roads, as well as all motorways, it is an offence to have your dog off the lead. To stay within the law and in the interests of your dog’s safety keep your dog on a lead when you are on a road. Laws require you to clean up after your dog. Failure to do so can result in a fine. Don’t be caught out, make sure your pockets are well stocked with poo bags whenever you and your dog are out and about and ensure you dispose of the bag properly. It is a criminal offence (Dangerous Dog Act 1991) to allow your dog to be ‘dangerously out of control’. A ‘dangerously out of control’ dog can be defined as a dog that has injured someone or a dog that a person has grounds to reasonably believe may injure somebody. Something as

simple as your dog chasing, barking at or jumping up at a person could result in an investigation, so ensure your dog is under control at all times. If your dog injures somebody, you could face a prison sentence or a fine. Under the same law it is also a criminal offence if your dog attacks an assistance dog. If you are concerned about your dog’s behaviour, get in touch with an accredited behaviourist. You will be committing an offence if your dog chases, attacks or causes suffering to livestock. A police officer may seize a dog suspected to be worrying livestock and you may be liable to a maximum fine of £1,000. It should be noted that a farmer may be able to shoot any dog worrying livestock if there are no other reasonable means for stopping the dog from doing this. To avoid this, keep your dog on a lead when livestock are around.

A guide to finding a pet-sitter this holiday season Pets Post Katharine Couchman Planning a holiday is an exciting time, but working out who is going to look after your pets while you’re away can be a headache. If neighbours, friends or family members are not an option, a petsitter can be a fantastic alternative, giving you real peace of mind. What are the benefits? A good pet sitter will understand that your pets are an extension of your family and will share your high expectations for their care. They should take the time to get to know your pets, asking lots of questions about feeding, play and cleaning to ensure that life goes on as normal for your animals while you are away. Even small animals can find changes to their routine stressful, which can have implications for behaviour and even digestion, so the fewer changes they can detect the better. Most pet-sitters are experienced pet-owners themselves and many have animal care qualifications. This will give you extra reassurance that they fully understand the needs of your animals, will take their welfare seriously and will know what signs of illness or distress to look out for. Using a pet-sitter not only gives you the peace of mind that your animals are being cared for in the comfort of their own home, you also have the added feeling of security that someone is coming into

your house on a daily basis, which can act as a powerful deterrent to burglars who may be looking out for unattended properties. How much does it cost? Prices can vary widely, but are usually based on a per-animal, per-visit rate, with discounts often available if you have more than one animal. Make sure you establish what the price includes, for example: how often will your pets’ enclosure be cleaned? There may also be charges for mileage if you fall outside of the pet-sitter’s normal range. Is it ok to interview? Absolutely! Chat to a few different pet-sitters on the phone or by email, you’ll soon get an idea of whether they share your values and you’ll instinctively know who is the right person to leave in charge of your furry friends. One very important question to ask is what the pet-sitter will do in the event that your pet is unwell. You should expect that they will treat your pet as their own and this should include a visit to the vet if they have any concerns about your animal’s health. Establish whether the sitter would take your animal to the vet where it is registered, or to a vet or their choosing. Before you go Make sure that all of your pets’ food and bedding is laid out clearly and labelled if necessary. If you think of any last-minute instructions, write them out or email

the pet sitter. You might feel like you’re being pedantic, but they will appreciate the instruction as the last thing a pet sitter wants is an unhappy animal in their care. While you are away You should expect some contact from your pet-sitter while you are away, whether by text, email or social media. Most will give you a daily update if you request it and many will send through photos so you can see how much fun your pets are having without you! Don’t be afraid to ask for more detailed information, particularly if your animals have any health complaints. When you get back Arrange a quick debrief with the per-sitter to see how your animals coped while you were away: did they have a healthy appetite, behave well (or at least normally!) or show any signs of stress? Some sitters will write a report card detailing what your pets have been up to while you have been on holiday. This can make amusing reading and will make you feel close to your pet again, as no doubt you will have missed them. Finding a pet-sitter can take a bit of effort, but the reassurance that comes from finding the right person is definitely worth it. Once you know that your animals will be well cared for, you can relax and enjoy your holiday, knowing that they’ll be healthy, happy and excited to see you when you get home.

Is your cat drinking enough water ?

Most cats don’t drink enough water. Because cats are so selfsufficient we assume they know what’s best for their health, and many times they do. 1 in 3 cats will experience kidney problems in their lifetimes. Many cat lovers have already had to deal with this issue at one time or another and may already be aware that dehydration worsens kidney disease. Most cat households do not provide sufficient sources of water for they feline friends. The following tips can be used to encourage your cat to drink more water. 1. Place water bowls EVERYWHERE Location, location, location—it

really matters! You’d be amazed to learn how sensitive most cats are to the positioning of a water bowl. Even a little unexpected foot-traffic can be enough to keep your cat from having that next drink. Keep fresh water bowls in multiple spots to maximize your feline’s comfort. 2. Consider feeding your cat wet food We provide free dietary advice with our nurses, but feeding wet food can be a great way to introduce more liquid to your cat. It is always more important that a cat eats, than eats what we want, and it is surprising that not every cat likes wet food, especially as their only diet. So, keep your cat’s preferences in mind and make sure they eat

enough of a new diet to maintain their energy level and weight. 3. Add water or flavour to your cat’s food Consider adding water or a low sodium chicken broth to canned food or get creative and discuss other flavor options with our nurses. You want to find something that’s healthy and appealing to your cat. Remember, each cat is an individual and even the texture of food can make a difference. 4. Add flavour to your cat’s water Consider adding low sodium tuna or clam juice ice cubes to your cat’s water (you may want to use a different tray than you use for your own cubes). The ice will not only keep the water cold longer, but can

add a tasty flavour. Alternatively you can give the cubes to your cat to play with. 5. Use drinking fountains Drinking fountains are not only a fun way to encourage your cat to drink, they can make very appealing additions to your home. 6. Test different bowls Keep in mind that your cat probably doesn’t want to share the dog’s giant bowl. In fact, the only way you’ll know your cat’s preferences is to swap bowls at different times. Better yet, keep several bowls out at all times and see which one drains the fastest. Lastly, consider broadening your definition of “bowl” for example we have know cats who only like to

drink from a clear drinking glass. 7. Encourage your cat’s drinking quirks Many cats will embrace less conventional methods of getting water. Many cats, for example, would rather drink from a leaky tap than an open bowl. If you notice this behaviour, by all means let your cat have a few drips before turning off the tap. Our nurses are on hand to offer advice on all behavioural problems or questions you may have about your cats health. If you notice your cat is drinking more this could be a sign of diabetes or kidney problems. We would always advise a consultation to discuss things further.

Silestone countertops allow for a kitchen that is both stylish and practical, and perfectly compliment the solid maple cupboards finished with Farrow and Ball paint. Bathrooms have been given the same standard of stunning finish. Large, drench-head showers and designer tiles all create

a chic, luxurious look. And with basins, baths and more made by the esteemed Italian manufacturer Porcelanosa, it is clear these homes have been built with beauty, comfort and contemporary living in mind. Just a 10 minute walk to Horsham’s town centre and just one mile from the main train station, this development is ideal for those who want to be close to local amenities. The M23, M25, Gatwick Airport and transport links to London are all easily accessible. Horsham park, country pubs and walks, excellent schools and some of the region’s best restaurants can all be found in the surrounding area. The Gorings is accessible only via Gorings Mead, a small lane

just a mile from Horsham town centre. The immediate area is made up of family-sized homes including detached properties, most of which have their own parking, garages and gardens, as well as some Victorian terrace cottages. With a tree-lined street and a combination of individual homes with their own character, this is one of the most desirable, enjoyable and attractive places to live in the town. Take this opportunity to enquire and be in ahead of the launch. Please visit or contact us to avoid disappointment. All enquiries or to arrange a site visit please call Chesworths Estates on 01403 255420 or visit us at our office: 26 North Street, Horsham RH12 1RQ

The sun finally comes out for Billingshurst Bowls Keith Barraclough - Billingshurst BC Castle Green 64 - 82 Billingshurst In contrast to much of the recent weather a fine sunny afternoon greeted the players for the Billingshurst match at Guildford based, Castle Green. Despite the bright conditions things went somewhat gloomy with the visitors struggling for the first half. Coming out from tea to play the back 9, ‘Hurst scored freely and with the aid of counts of

4, 5, 6, 7 they managed to turn the tea interval deficit of 5 into victory by 18 shots. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Ray Neal, Barry Gilbert & Betty Weller (+20). Ray Neal, Barry Gilbert & Betty Weller won 27-7. Stan Morgan, Anita Colliety & Geoff Weller won 20-15. John Lucas, Marion Clark & Alan Knight lost 18-20. Ray Sutton, John Bennett & Alan Readshaw lost 17-22. In the divisional semi-final of

Billingshurst’s Betty Weller

the County Pairs, John Bennett and Barry Gilbert were drawn away at Hollingbury Park against Carl Blinco and Richard Moses. The home pair soon got into their stride and scored 15 shots before the visitors got on the scoreboard. John and Barry then managed to score a few shots, including a well-earned 5, but could not stop their opponents - both of whom are Badged County players - running out worthy winners 28-11.

Pulborough in a league of their own Horsham Park through in Arundel Ladies won the Pulborough invitational

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC With a packed week of fixtures for Pulborough Bowls Club, the focus was very much on the ladies for Tuesdays Invitation Triples. 9 teams competed for cash prizes and the Triples Shield, kindly donated my Mick Ralph. Amongst

others, teams from Midhurst, Arundel, Storrington and Pulborough played 4 sessions of 5 ends to determine their standings on shot difference. The heavens opened just in time to drench those playing the final session of the day, but Arundel ladies had a far superior lead of 30 shots handing them the victory, followed by Storrington in

second place. Of the 4 men’s WSBL fixtures planned, the first, against Goring Manor Spitfires, was cancelled due to rain, making it a draw and 5 points apiece. Pulborough then visited Storrington for the first of 2 fixtures this season. The 6pm start must have suited the Pulborough players, as the 3 rink wins and overall victory 81/71 will add another 8 points to their league tally. Top rink for the day went to skip, Len Adsett, with lead, Mick Ayling, number 2, Malcolm Gray and number 3, Chris Etherington finishing 24/17. The away fixture against Goring Manor Hurricanes was a closer contest, with just 2 rink wins and overall victory 77/72 netting PBC just 6 points. Top rink for Pulborough went to Captain Paul Day, with Derek Swaffield, Hugh Hubbard and Liam Blunden in support, 25/12. Worthing Pavilion then visited Pulborough with the fixture not going Pulborough’s way with just 1 rink win and only 2 league points. In a friendly against Southwater all the players enjoyed a more relaxed atmosphere and a good dose of sunshine. 3 triples played 18 ends of good quality bowls, with Southwater struggling from the start. Pulborough won on all 3 rinks by quite a margin, finishing 70/28. Ivan Salmon, Pauline Adsett and Alan Jordan claimed top rink 27/8.

Kingslea kids revel in their healthy school week Kingslea Primary School’s very active Healthy School Week

School Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last week was Healthy School Week and Horsham’s Kingslea Primary School marked it in style with a wide range of events for every pupil - boys and girls, aged from four to eleven. At sports day, Head Alexis Conway told the District Post: “This is the first time that we’ve involved the whole school, all of the 425 children – it’s the pinnacle of our sporting year!” And, parents participated, too. The activities started off first thing on

Monday morning with a Zumba session for children, mums and dads. Tuesday was sports day with the sports field next to the school in Kings Road swarming with eager kids revelling in running and hurdling relay races, throwing bean bags into hoops, passing footballs down the line – over and under, skipping, ducking through tunnels and flinging Vortex Howlers, with score sheets collated to determine the winning house. Pupil Tom Morley, one of the school’s all round sports stars taking a brief breather said: “The 50 metre sprint is my

the Border League Cup

Bowls David Spurr - Horsham Park BC Horsham Park played Crawley’s Downsman Bowls Club in their second round Border League Cup game. One rink was played at home in the Park and a second rink was played away at Downsman, both starting at exactly the same time. The home team, skipped by Harry Smith with David James, Frank Heath and John Philpot, had a good win by 15 shots, 25 to 10. The away team, skipped by Frank Thomas with Ian Homes, David Spurr and Roger Leicester lost by 6 shots, 13 to 19, which gave Park an overall win by 9 shots, 38 to 29, and a place in the semifinal. Horsham Park had another

successful afternoon when they played away at Shere, winning on all 4 rinks and by 54 shots, 88 to Shere’s 34. Park’s top rink went to Frank Heath with Brenda Thompson and Helen Stepney who dominated their opponents from the start, finally winning by 21 shots, 28 to 7. Harry Smith, with Vic Pratt and Angela Spurr, also had a good game taking shots steadily throughout the afternoon and winning 20 shots to 7. Parks other 2 winning rinks skipped by Ian Holmes and David James won by 11 shots and 9 shots respectively. James’ team had a poor start and were down 5 shots to 7 by the 7th end but were able to come back and dominate the rest of the game taking all but 2 of the last 11 ends and winning 20 shots to 11.

Two dozen Joggers take in the Wadhurst countryside Horsham Joggers relax after the Bewl 15

favourite activity so far but I’m looking forward to the kayaking, paddle boarding and dinghy sailing that Year 5 are going to be doing at Southwater Country Park later in the week. It’s great to be able to do these things with my friends!” Among the army of volunteers helping to marshal the sports day were two fifteen year old girls from Millais School, Laynie Symonds told us: “I help out with football at after school club here on Thursdays and I really enjoy that – and today, too!” While Maggie Carey added: “This is a great opportunity for kids to experience sport and to learn some of the activities that they’ll be doing when they move on to their next school.” There was a timetable of events for the whole week, embracing mini Olympics, beach volley ball, crazy golf, stoolball, cycling safety and competition training – and, for Year One, forest nature events based in the copse surrounding the school field. Parents were included in Athletics Club activities and cricket coaching was provided by Rohit Jagota of Roffey Cricket Club, husband of Kingslea’s Healthy School Week organiser, Sports Coach Natalie Jagota. Natalie said: “We wanted to raise the profile of PE at Kingslea: we’ve entered the school into district primary school tournaments including football, basketball and a variety of other activities but the carousel of events at Tuesday’s sports day was a new venture, with Griffin House carrying off the trophy. The weather was kind and we had very positive feedback from the children and parents. The water sports were especially popular and we’ll definitely be doing it all again!”

Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers Horsham Joggers took on the very challenging Bewl 15 mile race last weekend on a multi terrain course set in the beautiful countryside around Wadhurst in East Sussex that takes in the splendour of Bewl Water. Palmer just out of the points in Austria Joylon Palmer had a much improved race in Austria

Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer and his Renault Sport team experienced a much improved weekend at the Austrian Grand Prix after a run of disappointments in previous races.

Palmer and his team mate Kevin Magnussen qualified just 0.024secs apart with Palmer eighteenth on the grid and Magnussen seventeenth. Magnussen worked his way up to finish in fourteenth place but Palmer managed to take the flag

in twelfth spot, just outside of the points. The positions achieved were despite a mid-race safety car which was less than complimentary to the team’s tyre strategy and with Magnussen getting a five second penalty for blocking a rival. Palmer commented, “I’m quite happy with the race. We just needed that little bit of extra luck and we could have been right there within the points. The car was okay; it felt better than in the last round and this was probably one of my strongest races personally. Had we needed to change to soft tyres when the safety car came out, we might have been able to make a pit stop then get to the end on that set to score points. I’ve been feeling stronger and stronger over the last few races and knowing we could have done well today makes me hopeful for points at the next round at Silverstone.” Palmer will be hoping he can improve further and get into the points in his home Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend (July 9 &10).

Easy Roffey win reduces gap at top of the table Photo by John Lines

George Fleming made the earley breakthrough fro Roffey Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 94 All Out (46.4 overs) Roffey 96-2 (18.2 overs) Roffey won by 8 wickets

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reportet Despite a run of low scores, including twice being bowled out for under 100 in June, Brighton & Hove decided to bat first after winning the toss, but their confidence was misplaced. With black skies skirting the ground Brighton started brightly, putting on 32 for

the first wicket but once George Fleming had dismissed both openers and the number three batsmen, for 16, 18 and 15 Brighton went into terminal decline. The next 6 batsmen contributed just 20 until two in the lower order each made 10, the last wicket stand reaching 23. But, Brighton had no answer to Fleming’s nagging accuracy as he took 5-43 in a marathon 22 over spell in tandem with miserly stints from Rohit Jagota (3-10) and Luke Barnard, 2-12, the pair bowling 17.4 frugal overs, Brighton limping along at under two runs an over. In reply Liam Gibson scored 40 not out and Theo Rivers 42, the non contest mercifully finishing at 4.25 including the tea interval. Roffey Captain Matt Davies said: “This was a very good win for us just when we needed it; our bowlers did really well setting up the game for us. The wicket was doing a bit and we had the right guys for the job.” Liam Gibson added: “I was feeling good with the bat so it was disappointing for me that we weren’t chasing a few more. Seriously, it was great to get a thirty point win!” Roffey remain third, now just nine points behind second placed Cuckfield (192) - whom they play at home tomorrow, Saturday. Horsham are top with 209, but Roffey have a game in hand.

Photo by John Lines Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Quarter Final Preston Nomads 125-8 (20 overs) Horsham 128-5 (16.1 overs) Horsham won by 5 wickets

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reportet A glance at the scores suggests an easy Horsham win – it was

comfortable enough in the end – but only after a brilliant innings from Michael Thornely rescued Horsham from seemingly certain defeat. Nomads elected to bat but at 77-7 a resounding Horsham victory beckoned, until evergreen Antiguan Carl Simon, approaching his 43rd birthday, top-scored with a 19 ball unbeaten 30 to set a modest,

but, on a slow wicket and outfield, possibly tricky 126 run target. Jamie Thornely took 3-22, Jofra Archer 2-24 and Sam Cushing, Michael Munday and Paul Williams (in his second match of the day), one wicket each. Yet, Carl Simon’s work was not done, Horsham crashing to 20-5 as he took a rapid 4-12, including three ducks, in his four over ration. Michael Thornely was stranded at the bowler’s end while the mayhem unfolded, but even greater drama followed. Jamie Thornely (12 not out from 33 balls) joined his brother to provide the perfect foil as Michael set about the support bowling with astonishing ferocity. The despondency of the Horsham camp soon turned to jubilation as Michael took on Nomads single handed with 10 fours and 5 blistering sixes in his 47 ball 98 not out, Horsham winning with 3.5 overs to spare without further loss. Nobody could remember the ball being hit so hard and so often, the first four balls of Tim Moses’s solitary over disappearing 6, 6, 6 and four. Michael told the District Post: “We did well to keep them down to 125 thanks to four skiers being latched onto in the deep, then we lost a cluster of wickets very quickly but we were not under any scoreboard pressure, we only needed to score at a run a ball from the start. It wasn’t an easy wicket to play shots on – it was very slow - but their change bowlers were not as good as ours. It was nipping around on a length but the short stuff was a different story!” In the semi final on Sunday July 24 Horsham have a home tie against Brighton & Hove, opening up the possibility of a clash with Roffey in the final at Hove on Sunday August 21 Meanwhile, Horsham 2s are also through to their cup semi final after dismissing Portslade for 98 in the QF and knocking off the runs with 6.5 overs left, Sam Attfield scoring 45 and Paul Williams 37, both unbeaten.

Horsham Sports Acro gymnasts dominate Sussex Championships The Horsham Sports Acro gymnasts dominated the Sussex Championships

Gymnastics Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham Gymnastics Centre’s Sports Acro squad demonstrated their strength with a very impressive performance at the 2016 Sussex Championships, held at the K2 Crawley last weekend. The Horsham Acro gymnasts totally dominated the competition winning 32 gold medals and 5 silver medals; the silver medals being earned where the Horsham competitors finished runners up to their own team mates. The powerful set of results will further boost the Horsham squad

ahead of this week’s flight to Italy where a number of them will compete in the International Turin Acro Cup and then for the British Championships held at the Echo Arena Liverpool at the end of the month. The Gold Medallists - and therefore Sussex Champions - for Horsham were: FIG Junior Women’s Group – Emily Steere, Zoe Schubert & Natalie O’Hara. FIG Junior Women’s Pair – Aimee Tolhurst & Madeline Kent. FIG 11 – 16 Women’s Group – Myla Kettell, Ella Dronfield & Zoe Gaudiano. FIG 11 – 16 Mixed Pair – Benjamin

Roffey cruise through to the semi final Matt Davies led Roffey into the T20 semi-final

Photo by John Lines Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Quarter Final Roffey 187-6 (20 overs) Hastings & St Leonards Priory 113 All Out (16.5) Roffey won by 74 runs

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Hastings won the toss and put Roffey in to bat, but soon wished they hadn’t when the score reached 92-1 in double quick time. 200 looked likely but two wickets then fell, slowing Roffey down before they recovered to post 187-6, including a five run penalty when the ball hit a helmet parked behind the wicketkeeper. That was a demanding total with the slow pitch inhibiting shot making. Usman Khan top-scored with 40 and Liam Gibson made 39 and left hander

Chris Webb an elegant 37 with handy contributions down the order. Needing to chase at over nine an over it was essential for Hastings to get off to a good start if they were to have any realistic chance of winning. They created a platform with a 32 run first wicket stand but progress was slow and by the time they reached 75-5 the run rate had risen to almost 13 an over. Roffey were fielding well with Rohit Jagota effortlessly pouching a catch in the deep and Captain Matt Davies leading from the front with three catches, a stumping and finalising two run outs. Boundaries dried up leaving Hastings no option other than to take chances, resulting in a further run out at the bowler’s end. Rohit, Leigh Harrison and Luke Barnard each took two wickets and George Fleming the final one as the middle and lower order evaporated leaving 3.1 overs unused. Matt Davies told the District Post: “We batted well for the first 16 overs but then lost our way a bit before Josh (Fleming) and Theo (Rivers) got us up to a very useful score, we were confident that we could defend that - and we did!”. Roffey travel to Middleton for the semi final on Sunday July 24. Middleton were relegated from the Premier League last season but dismissed East Grinstead for 103 in the Quarter Final to win by 69 runs.

Grade 2 Women’s Group – Olivia Barry, Nina Butler Laplace & Naima Hyder. Grade 2 Women’s Pair – India Fielden & Sophie Porter. The five silver medals as runners up to those named above were: FIG 11 – 16 Women’s Group – Georgia Brock, Ella Nelson & Phoebe Rochead (Italy) and Grade 5 Women’s Pair – Macy Lawes & Amelia Edson. Head Acro gymnastics coach at Horsham, Ali Harmer, said to The District Post, “All our gymnasts have put in many hours of work perfecting their routines and their dedication showed in our performance at the Sussex Champion-

ships. We now go into the unknown in Italy where we will compete against many international clubs in what will be a great experience and another step in the squads’ learning curve”. Emily Steere, Zoe Schubert, Natalie O’Hara, Aimee Tolhurst, Madeline Kent, Benjamin Ratciffe, Zoe Gaudiano, Georgia Brock, Ella Nelson and Phoebe Rochead flew out to Turin on Wednesday with their HGC coaches for four days of competition against clubs from Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Poland, Austria, South Africa, Germany, and Uzbekistan.

Horsham stay top despite heavy defeat Sussex Premier League Horsham 111 All Out (27.5 overs) East Grinstead 114-5 (26.4 overs) East Grinstead won by 5 wickets

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Put in to bat on a damp wicket at the Saint Hill Ground Horsham posted an inadequate score, which was overtaken by East Grinstead with plenty of overs and wickets in hand. Horsham reached 41-2 and then 95-5 but wickets then tumbled in a combination of good bowling and fielding and some disappointing shot selection. Leg spinner Bradley Hatchett took four of the last five wickets for three runs, engineering Horsham’s collapse. His brother Lewis was released from the Sussex squad at Hove to take 2-25, Ian Sturmer and Will Adkin sharing the remaining spoils. For Horsham Joe Ludlow, Craig Gallagher, Tom Johnson and Jamie Thornely all made promising starts, but were unable to progress into the thirties and beyond and the other seven batsmen could only amass 11 between them. Horsham were denied the services of

Will Beer, playing a long-awaited four day game for the county but fought hard to reduce the hosts to 51-4 amid rain stoppages. Sam Cushing took the first three wickets and Jofra Archer and Michael Munday chipped in with one apiece, but an unbeaten 60 from Regan Derham and a rare dropped catch enabled East Grinstead to win with limited worries. Former Horsham Captain Craig Gallagher told the District Post: “It was great to have Jofra bowling again following his injury – he delivered real pace on the slow wicket. A target of 150 might have made it interesting but it wasn’t a good day at the office for us!” Horsham remain top – 17 points clear of Cuckfield and 26 ahead of Roffey, who have a game in hand. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit, Brighton & Hove who are currently hovering just above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, there have been two outstanding innings at Cricketfield Road: Sam Attfield opening the batting for the seconds made 158 not out and, for the thirds, Gerard Wiede notched up 171, both innings securing substantial victories.
