Callum takes national award phil dennett News Editor
A 17-year-old from Horsham has won a national award for the way he uses music to combat severe depression. For Callum Leech music is more than just something in the background. It has helped him cope with anxiety, depression and crowds as he finds life more difficult than many young people. Now Callum he has been awarded the O2 Fan Clef Award at the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef awards ceremony in London. Presented on the blue carpet surrounded by outstanding talent across the industry, including Lionel Richie, Massive Attack and Jess Glynne, Callum was recognised as being a fan whose life has been changed for the better through music. Music therapists from Nordoff Robbins selected Callum from hundreds of entries as a result of the profound impact music has had on helping his struggles with anxiety, depression and crowds.
Callum said: “It was amazing to receive the O2 Fan Clef award on the blue carpet surrounded by some of the most famous names in music! Music is very much my passion and it has really helped me through some of my darkest times. Earlier this year I lost my father but the lyrics and music from artists like Troye Sivan and Jack Garrett helped me to cope. I also used to struggle with depression and anxiety, especially in big crowds. But after seeing how friendly everyone was at my first gig, they really feel like home to me now.” Paul Shulver, head of music sponsorship at 02 said: “We recognise that music can have a profound effect on people’s lives. Callum’s experience demonstrates how music can be used to overcome adversity and form part of the healing process. We were touched by his story.” Since 1976 the O2 Silver Clef Awards scheme has raised nearly £9million for Nordoff Robbins and has been sponsored by O2 for the past 10 years. It has honoured some of the greatest names in music including U2, the Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Photo by Jim Holden Visitors set a new world record when they helped build a giant straw table at a popular garden. They used about 150 bales of straw from a nearby farm for the picnic table at Wakehurst gardens, near Ardingly. The structure has been confirmed as a world record by the Guinness World Records. Wakehurst director Tony Sweeney said: “We are delighted to give new meaning to ‘a picnic in the countryside’. We created this experience to corral the senses and lift the spirit, in a shared spirit of community around food, family and conversation. It was also about re-connecting people to landscape and the environment, and learning something new about plants and biodiversity. The Guinness World Record is almost literally the icing on the cake, and we are proud and grateful to everyone who came to make the event so successful with us.” The table, which can seat about 200 people, will remain throughout the summer for al fresco dining
and meetings with friends. Anyone who would like to join in one of the ‘Picnic in the Paddock’ gatherings in August, to experience the table, please visit: www.kew.org/ visit-wakehurst/whats-on/picnicpaddock-family-event The table, which measured 105.4m in length, consisted of a mixture of large round bales, acting as parasol holders and square bales as well as smaller bales which were used for seating. Surveyor David Buckley, from Martin,Lacey, Buckley, took the measurements and the attempt was independently adjudicated by local professionals Emma Oliver, John Mabey and the Revd Mark Betson, with photographic evidence. The table, which can seat around 200 people at any one time, was constructed in time for visitors to the opening of Wakehurst’s Coronation Meadow and the Wild Food Festival but will remain throughout the summer for al fresco dining and meetings with friends.
The beach was the theme when nearly 400 women and girls walked through the night for charity. They took part in the St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk in Horsham Park in aid of the Crawley-based hospice. Coloured jellyfish, palm trees and deckchairs surrounding the marquee, a warm up by international fitness presenter and fitness model Jo Cooper and a photo booth were all part of the atmosphere. Walkers were also spurred on by inspiring speeches from St Catherine’s night nurses and walker Lisa Jarvis who took part in memory of her mum. They took on seven or 13 miles, and for the most ambitious, a 20 mile walking route. Each year St Catherine’s needs to raise £6 million in voluntary donations to provide their free care to local people facing a
terminal illness, and their families and friends. Sponsorship raised from the Midnight Walk will go a long way towards reaching that total with the walk likely to raise about £80,000 for the hospice. Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said: “Seeing so many women ditch their beauty sleep to walk throughout the night was truly inspiring. Each and every one of them did us proud and we RE so grateful for their support. Their amazing efforts will make a real difference to all those we care for and I would also like to thank the 100 brilliant volunteers who gave up their sleep to help cheer our walkers on.” This year’s walk was sponsored by Assurity Consulting, who also provided the photo booth whilst some staff took part in the walk. Pictured are scenes from the walk.

Historic success for Christ’s Hospital students Celebrating
Taxi driver might have collapsed before crash A taxi driver killed in a crash might have collapsed at the wheel just before the impact with a lorry. Peter Etherington, 68, of Capricorn Close, Crawley, died after his Citroen C4 car collided with a Volvo tipper truck in Compton Lane at the junction with Heron Way.
Pupils, staff and parents at Christ’s Hospital at Horsham are celebrating after pupils received the school’s best International Baccalaureate examination results in its history. Two students secured places at Oxbridge and four will read Medicine. More than 25% of the 39 pupils entered gained 40 or more points out of a possible 45, with more than 54% of the pupils gained 38 or more points, the equivalent of at least four A* at A level. Emma
Toms achieved 44 points and Benji Yokyong Zoega 43. Emma Toms will study Classics at Cambridge and Benji Yokyong Zoega has secured his place at York. Head Master John Franklin said: “We are delighted with our International Baccalaureate results this year, which are the best the school has had since it first introduced the programme in 2013, alongside A levels. The average point score was 36.6 out of 45. All of our IB students will be exceptionally well prepared for university following the

Naomi’s a winner Technology brings sighted and non sighted together in music
Winner Naomi Wollett, six
Robert and Jonathan
Little Naomi Wollett has every right to be pleased with herself. The six-year-old pupil of Trafalgar Community Infant School in Horsham won a green waste poster competition with her eye-catching entry. More than 100 children aged 4-11 entered the competition staged by the West Sussexbased Woodhorn Group. Pupils from the county were invited to create a poster showing how peat free compost helps the garden in order to raise awareness of the importance of recycling green waste. The other two winning entries from their age group were Bebe Duncan, eight, from Camelsdale Primary School in Haslemere and Arron Kille, nine, from
Thorney Island Primary School. Each will receive a mini gardening set as well as a tour of The Woodhorn Group’s organic dairy farm for their class. Their schools will receive all support and materials needed to create a raised bed or vegetable patch for students to enjoy. John Pitts, managing director of The Woodhorn Group said: “We are delighted to have received so many wonderful poster designs. We’ve really enjoyed seeing all the imaginative entries and hope that our competition has helped raise awareness of green waste recycling. We are now looking forward to showing the schools round our organic dairy farm and seeing the garden bed projects come to life.”

Robert Mayfield This story really starts in 1994 when I met James at a birthday party where I was entertaining. James was 8yrs old at the time. He was blind and, usually, he would go into another room because music upset him, but on this occasion he stood by me throughout, taking part in everything, even down to singing over the microphone! The hostess said she saw James ‘flower’ during the party, and I gave him an ocarina before I left. Sometime later, I got a phone call from James, asking me to teach him the ocarina,
and things have been progressing from then on. Since we first met, James has gathered together about 30 musical instruments. He loves music and, in particular, the ocarina, which is a form of whistle and comes in various sizes and tunings. Then some months ago, the Blue Flash Music Trust received an email from the Ocarina Workshop telling us that the RNIB had published a braille book of ocarina music, which turned out to be an exact copy of the book James uses. On buying the book I realised that the braille book was of no use to the sighted person, as it was like
looking at a landscape covered with snow. The need for the Tablet Ocarina Project was identified; the aim of it being to create a common ground so that the sighted and the non-sighted musician can ‘read’ the music together. Things moved forward quite quickly on coming across the HackHorsham display in Swan Walk shopping mall in November. By linking up pieces of fruit to a computer, a simple tune could be played. It was clear that the tablature, set out in the original ocarina book, could become a ‘live’ keyboard, something the Trust had, in part, already created, where the non-sighted person could feel the dots as bumps and know which note to play. A prototype was made using plastic and a bit of cardboard. When tried out, James was able to read the music and play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The keyboard could become live, but the plastic bumps needed to become metal ones in order to conduct electricity. A new version was placed before James, who was able to recognise it as Twinkle, just by feeling the shapes made by the brads, far more easily. One of the differences between the first prototype and the second is that the dots have been placed closer together, so that James can read the note with just one finger. This led to the creation of a keyboard, where wires are sandwiched underneath. At a HackHorsham event in April, with the help of 12 year old Jonathan, the keyboard was found to work through a Raspberry Pi, and speaker, so that the note D (seen as four dots in the ocarina book and formed with four metal brads on the keyboard) gave the note D. The significance of this achievement was even more apparent during a recent session with James. We could now work together on a particular section of music and we could both ‘read’ the brads and James could pick up his ocarina and play that phrase of music. What a step forward this was, particularly when, at that time, the keyboard had not even been attached to a computer! With the loan of a Raspberry Pi, and working with Jonathan of HackHorsham, the keyboard has been found to work.

Fabuloso for Spanish students Students at a Horsham college played host to Spanish visitors. The youngsters and staff at Collyer’s welcomed a group of 13 students and two teachers as part of a student exchange programme. The students attend top Spanish school Instituto Cristobal Lozano in Hellin, close to Alicante on the east coast of Spain. The group started its week in the UK with a visit to London where they visited the main historical monuments including Buckingham
This fabulous experience provides a better understanding of customs, history and culture Palace, The Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square. The group also went to Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, Petworth House and the Weald and Southdown Museum, to learn about how English people lived and worked in the past. Maria Carmen Melgarejo, accompanying teacher for the Spanish students, said: “This fabulous ex-
perience provides a better understanding of customs, history and culture, so it is a good way to elaborate a modern European citizenship.” In addition to trips and visits, the students also spent valuable time attending lessons with her English hosts in a variety of subjects and took part in some busy and entertaining classroom workshops, with a particular focus on language and culture. Margarita Mortimer, Head of Spanish at Collyer’s, said: “We are always pleased to welcome our Spanish exchange students because it’s such a good opportunity for them to experience life in England as well as practise their language skills. The Collyer’s students and their families have been very accommodating and visiting Horsham, London, Brighton and the South Downs was a fantastic experience for all of us.” Collyer’s Vice Principal Steve Nicholls said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome our visitors, they are an absolute credit to their school, Hellin and Spain! The exchange is an incredibly important part of learning about language and culture for the Collyer’s and Instituto Cristobal Lozano students and I’m very happy that everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the visit.”

New parking charges at Southwater Country Park Horsham District Council has announced the introduction of parking charges at Southwater Country Park, from 25 July 2016. The new charge has been kept as low as possible so that local people are not deterred from visiting and enjoying the popular facilities at the Park – with a £1.50 daily charge and annual permits available at £30.00. The Country Park has enjoyed an overhaul over the last 18 months, with improvements to car parking, access paths, the popular beach area and the installation of the new and much loved Dinosaur Island adventure play area. Since the new play area opened visitor numbers have almost doubled and the income stream from the new parking charge is needed to help cover maintenance costs for the Park. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen explained the new charge: “We have kept the charge as low as we possibly can. The increasing popularity of the Country Park has meant that the council has needed to invest in more parking, better toilet provision, improved path surfacing and increased staffing. We now staff the Country Park daily to carry out patrol-
ling, litter picking and visitor services. The proceeds from the new parking charge will pay for these additional services. We think that £1.50 for a day out for the family – including the exciting Dinosaur Island – represents very good value.” The Country Park also offers opportunities for water sports, picnics, country walks and cycling on the Downs Link bridleway which runs next to the Park. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at the lake side Country Park Café, with views over the beautiful water sports lake. Charging will be in force every day from 10am – 6pm. A lower charge of 50p per day will be in place over the winter months (October – February inclusive). The council will monitor and enforce all parking restrictions in both the car parking areas within Southwater Country Park and the surrounding roads. To obtain a season ticket please contact the council’s Parking Services team by emailing parking@horsham.gov.uk.. For more information please contact the council’s Parks & Countryside Services team at parks@horsham.gov.uk or call01403 215285. Contact: press@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215571.

Youngsters learn how to speak and listen well Taking a breather
Youngsters got used to the sound of their own voice while considering the views of others at a conference. Training on radio microphones and getting used to their voices in a large venue was all part of the the Sixth Form Conference for 270 year 12 students and a small selection of KS4 students at Steyning Grammar School. Conference chair Nick Wergan, the school’s Headteacher, introduced the panel. It was a diverse group drawn from very different walks of life; Sam Gouldson, a science author), Scarlett deCourcier
, digital forensic investigator and former student of the school, Jacob Berkson, Philosopher at the University of Sussex, and Rev. Andrew Fadoju , a Christian Minister. The event, organised by Mark Warwick, the school’s Religious Education Learning Leader, has been designed to give students the opportunity to consider current affairs, philosophical, ethical, political and religious issues. The first session was very much like the television programme ‘Question Time’ with the chair selecting the best questions from a range previously provided by the stu-
dents, with the aim of stimulating lively debate, which included the referendum that decided that the UK should withdraw from the European Union. The Sixth Form students own version ended with 79% siding with ‘Remain’, and 19% opting for ‘Leave’. Thought-provoking questions included “Did the EU referendum produce the right result” “Should Donald Trump be allowed to visit the UK to open his new golf course?” and “Should we bring back the death penalty in the UK?”

Scam warning to residents Residents should be aware of scams and recognise the signs of potential fraudsters, says West Sussex Trading Standards department. This is Scams Awareness Month, a national campaign to help stop millions of people fall prey to scammers and this year’s theme is “I’m glad I listened to my gut feeling”. The campaign will be looking at the four key ways scammers target their victims, via the telephone, online, mail and face to face. The campaign encourages people to trust their initial instinct when receiving an unexpected or suspicious communication, to always be scam aware, and to obtain advice before taking any action following a potential scam attempt. Trading Standards officers and Citizens Advice staff will be attending a range of events across the county to provide information on scams and to of-
fer tips to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activity. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “It is so important that we raise awareness of this campaign as fraudsters target the most vulnerable members of society in a wide variety of ways. “Scammers can be very devious and use persuasive ways to trick their victims so it is vitally important residents are aware of how to spot scams, who they can contact to report fraud or for help if they do fall victim.” Anyone concerned about scams can get advice from the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506. To learn more about scams and to report fraud and cyber crime visit www.actionfraud. police.uk. Nick Wergan, head teacher at Steyning Grammar School said: “This was a spectacular display of Steyning Grammar School student talent. I am so proud of them, and thanks are due to our fantastic staff who work so hard to nurture and develop this creativity. “We aim to unlock the true potential of all our students, and this exhibition truly shows this aspiration in action. In a world where creativity has such great value, I am so optimistic for what our students can go on to achieve; their work is ambitious and thought-provoking. This is yet again one of the highlights of our school year.” Some of the work is pictured.

Onyinye tells of her week in the City The court
Christ’s Hospital school student Onyinye Udokporo, who hopes to be a barrister, spent a week in the City. Here is her report: “It was a great privilege to be able to shadow the Town Clerk and Chief Executive Officer of the City of London Corporation. During my time at the Guildhall I was able to see how the City of London is smoothly run. It became clear to me how much hard work goes into keeping the City a safe and friendly work and living space. It was wonderful to work in a space that has such enriching history that has not been lost till this day. What I found most interesting during my time there was being able to see the work the Town Clerk does to improve equality and inclusion in the City and this has motivated me to work hard so that
one day I might be in his position. The experience has given me further insight into what it takes to work in, as well as expanding my knowledge of, local government. All in all, I had a fantastic time. Trip to the Old Bailey I’m sure the workers taking their lunch break in Paternoster Square enjoyed seeing a group of teenagers in a Tudor style uniform. What was most enjoyable for us was being able to see first-hand action in court. It was a thrilling experience, especially because we were sitting very closely to the dock in the press box. It was good to see Barristers in action and for me it affirmed my desire to become a barrister one day. Following our time in Court we had a question and answer session with the Judge which gave us all the op-
portunity to receive advice about our possible future careers in Law. to the Guildhall for the Sherriff Voting Day and Armed Forces Day was a very new experience for me and one that will be in my memory forever. It was brilliant to see all those involved dressed in their various uniforms. It is the one time I can honestly say I did not feel like the odd one out dressed in my Christ’s Hospital ceremonial uniform. I definitely felt a sense of community and everyone was very welcoming. It was interesting to see the different livery companies parade and to hear the very personal speeches from the new Sheriffs. Later in the day the focus became the Armed Forces. Thanks to Christ’s Hospital I was very familiar with the band and the marching and I was moved by the Lord Mayor’s Speech which expressed thanks to the Men and Woman who give up their time for Queen and Country. I would like to express my thanks to all those who made my experiences possible. They have helped me to create memories I will never forget and ones that I know will help shape my future. I have been given the opportunity to meet the most inspirational people and I can only hope that one day I will be able to inspire others in the way that they have inspired me.”

Award boosts research into World War 1 battle A little remembered attack of the First World War that was a bloody curtain raiser to the Somme is to be further researched. Storrington and District Museum received its third Heritage Lottery Fund award in as many years for the work. The money will help the group research the Battle of Boar’s Head which involved local men from Sussex the day before the Battle of
the Somme, a hundred years ago. The group says that little is known of this early morning attack of the June 30 in 1916 which was to divert German attention away from the Battle of the Somme which began the following day. Those involved were from the 12th and 13th (Southdowns) Battalions (11th Battalion was kept in reserve) of the Royal Sussex Regiment, men from the surrounding area and from across east and
west Sussex. Almost 350 men died that morning with many more receiving serious injuries. One of those men was John French who lived on School Hill. A further seven men’s names can be found on local war memorials surrounding Storrington. This is the third award from the Heritage Lottery Fund that the Storrington and District Museum has received. In 2013 the first
award was to research the village school where an annual school reunion takes place each September. The next award in 2014 was for the Roll of Honour which now hangs on the walls outside of the White Horse Hotel in Storrington’s High Street. It first appeared there in 1917. The centenary volunteers hold annual exhibitions and support community projects like “Poppies on the Pond”, where pupils of
Rydon Community College made ceramic poppies for the island on the memorial pond on the Pulborough road, each poppy represents a serviceman on the war memorial. If you would like to be part of this project by helping in research or being part of the Storrington and District Museum please contact Stuart Duncan on 01903 740188 or email storringtonmuseum@hotmail.co.uk

The story of the Southdowns and the Somme
The battlefields of the First World War are filled with tragedies and lost lives. This is the story of the worst moment in Sussex’s military history and the day its men died. It is from Wweastsussexww1.org.uk/daysussex-died by Chris Kempshall about the tragic fate of the 11th Battalion Southdowns. The sound of artillery at the outbreak of the Battle of the Somme could be clearly heard on the Sussex coast. The noise of the guns routinely drifted across the channel and could be heard as far in land as London on some days. The sounds of fighting were particularly loud on 1 July 1916 as men rose from trenches to face the single worst day in the history of the British Army. By sunset, 57,470 men had become casualties, of which 19,240 were dead. Sussex’s worst day had, however, taken
place 24 hours earlier. Preparing for Battle The Battle of the Somme was not an isolated event. Whilst the main attack was launched on 1 July, the battle had really begun on 24 June with the opening of the artillery bombardment. The guns were charged with breaking the German wire and destroying the fortifications and morale of the soldiers across No Man’s Land. Bad weather pushed the infantry assault back by 48 hours to 1 July. Hiding such a large scale offensive from the German army was not a simple task but British high command was keen to try and draw away as many of the German defenders as possible by launching diversionary attacks elsewhere along the front. The battle at Ferme du Bois near Richebourg has largely passed out of popular memory. It is not men-
tioned in the Official History of the War for Britain and, coming a day before the infantry attack on the Somme has become heavily overshadowed by the fighting there. The men of the 11th, 12th and 13th Southdowns Battalions that would lead the fighting there were unaware that their assault was a diversionary raid. Their objective was the nearby salient, a bulge in the line, known as ‘The Boar’s Head’ and it was to be ‘bitten out’. Before the attack could even be launched problems were afflicting it. The Southdowns had been taken to a constructed replica of the battlefield from which to train on. This training however lasted only a few days and did not include a hitherto unnoticed wide dyke that flowed through the middle of No Man’s Land. Upon learning of the plans for battle, Colonel Grisewood, com-
mander of the 11th Battalion, famously declared: “I am not sacrificing my men as cannon-fodder”. Grisewood was promptly relieved of his post. Grisewood had already lost one brother during the war to illness. He would lose another at the Boar’s Head. The 12th and 13th Battalions were given the responsibility to lead the attack with the 11th Battalion, having had their role reduced following Grisewood’s dismissal, tasked with providing carrying parties. At 3:05am on 30 June 1916, the Southdowns went over the top. The Germans had known they were coming for several days and, as would be discovered in 24 hours at the Somme, the artillery bombardment at Richebourg had had little effect on the German wire. As a result, the attack was a disaster. The discovery of the hidden dyke meant that crossing this obstacle

made men an easy target for opposing guns. Those men who managed to clear No Man’s Land soon found themselves caught in the smokescreen that was supposed to blind the Germans and were unable to see where they were going. As British soldiers reached the German trenches the fighting descended into brutal pitched hand to hand fighting until the British were eventual driven out. Company Sergeant Major Nelson Carter single-handedly captured a German machine gun post and used the weapon to cover the retreat of his fellows before fleeing German trenches himself. He then repeatedly re-entered No Man’s Land to rescue wounded men and carry them to safety. On his final trip he was shot through the chest and killed. He was posthumously rewarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery. Other awards for the Southdowns included twenty Military Medals, eight Distinguished Conduct Medals, four military crosses and a Distinguished Service Order. These awards were not greeted with much enthusiasm. The war poet Edumnd Blunden, who had volunteered for service with the 11th Battalion, Southdowns at the outbreak of the war, declared that upon hearing of the real reason for the attack that ‘the explanations were almost as infuriating to the troops as the attack itself’. The casualty numbers were tremendous. The 11th Battalion had sustained 116 casualties whilst supporting the attack. The 12th Battalion lost 429 men either killed or wounded. The 13th Battalion, however, had been almost entirely destroyed with over 800 men being killed, wounded or captured. In total, the three Southdowns Battalions suffered 366 killed and over 1000 wounded or taken prisoner. The majority of officers and NonCommissioned Officers in these positions were among the casualties. About 70% of those that died came from Sussex with estimates including up to 12 sets of brothers. The Southdowns Battalions would be rebuilt over time but they would lose much of their Sussex identity with recruits being brought in from across the country. The majority of those Sussex men who were killed are buried at cemeteries near Richebourg. There is no memorial to the Battle of the Boar’s Head in Britain. Imperial War Museums (IWM) is asking members of the public to discover, remember and share the lives of every man who fought in the Battle of the Somme, on the permanent digital memorial Lives of the First World War − www. livesofthefirstworldwar.org A hundred years ago, at 7.30am on 1 July 1916, British troops climbed out of their trenches near the River Somme to advance across no man’s land towards the German lines. The preliminary week-long bombardment saw over 1.5 million shells fired at the German positions in the hope of cutting through the enemy’s barbed wire and destroying their trenches, yet as the night of 1 July drew to a close, over 19,240 British troops lay dead, with many more wounded.

I’m now really looking forward to seeing my ‘new’ teeth in a few weeks’ time. The brighter look will mean I can smile with confidence in my new teaching role overseas!” Dr. Arvin Mirzadeh, Dental Surgeon and Practice Principal of Vitality, commented: “We had a really good response to the social media competition to find the new ‘Face of Vitality’. Kate has a lovely smile already and her teeth whitening prize will make it dazzle. The treatment will take about four weeks and, after that, we’ll be taking some professional photos of Kate and her new smile for our website, social media and marketing material. What are the possible consequences of divorce? In the first of a series of articles, RB’s Family Law Team looks at the impact of divorce upon children, a family’s finances and in this article, Nigel Winter focuses on what it means for the individuals concerned. One of the biggest problems of a relationship breakdown can be who to talk to. Frequently the parties rely upon friends or associates who have been through the same experience, However this can sometimes be one of the most misleading sources. Some family lawyers have noticed that groups of friends who have couples going through such difficulties are often affected by this. It is also clear that considerable thought should be given before taking the significant step of divorce or separation, as the impact continues far longer than people often realise. One thing that research does show is that stable relationships are beneficial. Whatever the short term benefits of leaving a relationship that is perceived not to be working, the parties can experience social isolation and irregular contact with their children. Although a separation may be seen as the panacea to all of the relationships problems, in the “sober light of morning” parties often indicate that they remain deeply attached to their partners even when the legal ties have been broken. Some people are better able to handle separation and divorce than others. Those that emerge happier are often those who come from high conflict or even violent relationships. Furthermore those that embrace the significant changes in their lives and work on maintaining old friendships or establishing new ones fare much better. People considering separation
will naturally look to how friends who are going through the same experience are managing. Those friends may indicate that they are happier, but that may be because of other factors such as their own unique financial position. For many people, divorce leads to dividing the family’s assets to meet their needs. Inevitably there is frequently an overall fall in their standard of living as one household is divided into two. Additional pressure can be added to a difficult situation when one considers that two parties to a marriage/relationship are shouldering the burden of family life together and upon breakdown those responsibilities can be doubled. Furthermore modest resources which are divided between two people often leave lower income families with insufficient to meet even their most basic needs. It therefore appears that divorce, like marriage or relationships does depend upon each individual family and their own particular circumstances. However, when people receive informal advice they often don’t factor in the subtle differences in situations between the person giving the advice and the person receiving it. Therefore, there is a very real danger that in a social setting an individual contemplating separation could receive the wrong advice. Despite what anyone tells you, when you separate you do not go back to leading the carefree easy life! Day to day activities of home, work and childcare are more difficult to carry out alone. Support networks change, sometimes because it is perceived that you will be requiring more from the network than you can possibly contribute yourself. Furthermore divorced individuals often find they have less in common with their married
friends and some have reported that they are even a threat to the stability of their married friends’ relationships. In relationships where there are children there have been great changes in recent years. Research tells us that the proportion of single fathers raising their own children has tripled in a generation. And parents who were able to manage a work/life balance in a relationship can find it difficult after separation to be successful at home and work, even without even considering the prospect of a social life. One fact that is startling and unforeseen is the degree of dependency upon ex-partners or ex-spouses. Many concede privately that they remain emotionally dependent upon the other even when a divorce or separation is concluded. Research is showing that whilst a Court can divide up property and other responsibilities such as child care, it cannot decree an emotional clean break. Few of these factors are easy to convey in a social setting. However it is better that they are properly considered before making a final decision, rather than having to reflect upon the consequences in solitude. Help is on Hand When that decision is being contemplated, it is wise to seek ‘without obligation’ legal advice. RB has run a Family Law clinic for many years for people who are precisely at that point. By using this service you remain very much ‘in control’. Many people are concerned that on seeing a solicitor, events will spiral out of control. They will not – the service is completely confidential. You are also receiving the right advice at the right time. For further information telephone on 01403 252492.

Thanks for the memories Students have had plenty of reasons to dress up and celebrate at schools and colleges across the district as the term winds down to the summer break. For some the proms, balls, and prize givings have a bitter-sweet edge as students leave schools where they received their secondary education and formed friendships, before heading into further studies or the world of work. To send them on their way they have memories of beautifully dressed young women and smart young men enjoying themselves. For some parties students arrived in all manner of transport from long limousines and classy cars to a bus and a tractor. Sixth form leavers at Steyning Grammar School’s Sixth Form College Leavers’ Dinner and Prize Giving were described as inspirational by their head teacher.Nick Wergan summed up the occasion by saying:” I was incredibly proud of our Sixth Form leavers, a talented and inspirational group of young people destined for great success. They are wonderful ambassadors for Steyning Grammar School, and I thank them, and their teachers, for their hard work and commitment. “ The dinner was held at Avisford Park Hotel, near Arundel and was attended by 220 sixth formers, with teach mentors, teachers, boarding staff, members of the school management team and governors. At the Millais girls school and Forest boys school in Horsham the girls and the boys celebrated at a mixed party for 440 students and 66 staff at Copthorne Effingham Park, as the class of 2016 celebrated
the end of their exams in style. A horse drawn chariot was among the transport. Pupils from Farlington School in Horsham displayed plenty of glitz and glamour at the annual Sixth Form Ball. Year 11 Weald School students danced the night away on a boat on the River Thames at their annual leavers prom, with some turning up for their London-bound coach in a camper van. The event Farlington’s school upper and lower sixth form pupils, staff, and parents enjoyed a three-course meal and dancing at Wildwood Golf and Country Club for their Sixth Form Ball. On the last night of the school year and to mark the end of the exam season at Christ’s Hospital, the leaving Grecians , Year 13 pupils. celebrated in style with the school’s customary leavers’ ball. The theme this year was Arabian Nights. The Tanbridge House School celebration at The Felbridge Hotel, East Grinstead, was also a sendoff for teacher Mrs Pinington, who retires this year after 37 years there She said: “This year’s Prom was the perfect finale to Year 11’s time at THS. They have all worked so hard, particularly over the past year. It was lovely to spend an evening together in recognition and celebration of that. “For me, after 37 years at Tanbridge House, it was the perfect farewell. Many staff thought it was the best Prom ever. The students were an absolute delight and I will miss them alI. I wish them all the best of luck in whatever they decide to do next.”

Heats announced for Horsham Battle of the Bands Festival 2016
Revealed An Interview with Sir Thomas deClare, a Mediaeval Jousting Knight. Most people associate jousting with the idea of chivalric knights and their adoring maidens, but the use of heavy cavalry - armored warriors on horseback - had become the primary battlefield weapons in mediaeval times and the feudal system in place required rich landowners and nobles to provide knights to fight for their king during war. Jousting provided these knights with practical, hands-on preparation in horsemanship, accuracy and combat simulations and kept them in fighting shape between battles. But, what was initially intended purely as military training quickly became a form of popular entertainment. It was common for successful jousters to become immensely popular and medieval heralds promoted the events through poems and songs and helped spread the jousters’ fame. However, the knights did not just joust for pride and glory; there was more on the line. The most successful jousters could receive gifts of money, land and titles from a grateful liege.

The Sensational ‘60s Experience: The tour that never ends
Interview with A Jousting Knight What is your name and occupation? I am Sir Thomas deClare, I am a champion of the tourney and travel this land and beyond to fight for glory, make my name and win my fortune. Sometimes I may go weeks without winning a pouch of gold. It’s a hard life.
What is your aim in this life?
To win fame, riches and glory, so that my name shall never die. I also hope to buy a great estate, perhaps a castle and fill it with the finest treasures.
Is your occupation a solitary one?
I am rarely without company. The men of the land wish to be me, and the ladies all wish to be with me. I also have my servants to look after my horses and equipment. If they do not do a good job, I will have them beaten.
What do you eat and drink on a normal day?
Tell us something about your life that we would not know. Upon the top of my helmet sits a golden decoration that my opponent may try to knock off. This is called a crest, and if it is broken it means I am defeated, and I will be ‘crestfallen’.
Only the finest of what is in season. For my meat I eat veal, pork, lark and swan, and also fruits and sweetmeats and all good things. Because of my fame I am often the guest of great Lords who provide exotic spices and sometimes even that rare treat, sugar. I drink honeyed wines from France and mead from the north.
What skills are most important to you?
What is your most prized possession?
I must be an excellent horseman, a man of honour and never miss the chance to tell everyone of my prowess in the jousting lists.
My horses, each one takes years to train and costs what a common man might earn in a lifetime.

Obstacles claim as big festival cancelled
The Big Kahuna Festival at Horsham has been cancelled amid claims by organisers that “insurmountable obstacles” had been put in their way. But a council says the organisers failed to satisfy safety conditions. Festival bosses say they have have contacted all those who have purchased tickets, and also announced the news via their website and social media. The new, three-day familyfriendly music festival was due to take place on August Bank Holiday weekend at Holmbush Forest in Horsham, Sussex. The event was granted a licence in April. The organisers said in a statement: “ “It is with great regret and disappointment that we have to deliver the news that for reasons beyond our control The Big Kahuna Festival 2016 will no longer be going ahead. “Following the granting of our licence in April and after extensive meetings with the council, it has become apparent that a small but vocal opposition to the event has meant that insurmountable hurdles have been put in place. “As a result the continued promoting of the event would be irresponsible to our suppliers and
ticket holders. Those who have purchased tickets have been sent an e-mail regarding refunds. “Obviously we are bitterly disappointed to be bringing you this news, after months of hard work to bring what we believe would have been an outstanding event to the area. I am very proud of the team and what they achieved and would like to thank everyone who has supported this event.” For further information please see: www.bigkahunafestival.co.uk <http://www.bigkahunafestival. co.uk> https://www.facebook.com/bigkahunafest/ Ticketholders should direct any questions to: info@bigkahunafestival.co.uk <mailto:info@bigkahunafestival.co.uk> Horsham District Council said: “A meeting of the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) including Sussex Police, Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Area Ambulance Service and officers from Horsham District Council’s Emergency Planning and Environmental Health and Licensing teams met with organisers of The Big Kahuna Festival, Fire and Ice Productions Ltd on 5 July regarding safety measures. “It was explained to the festival

organisers that the Safety Advisory Group were not in a position to sign off the required Event Management Plan (EMP) in time for the proposed event dates (27,28.29 August) to go ahead. “Numerous health and safety concerns which were raised by the SAG over several months had not been addressed by the event organisers and, as these were conditions required to successfully complete the premises licence application process, it was agreed that the event, planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend, could not go ahead at this time. “The event organisers have been given ongoing support from members of the SAG for several months since the beginning of 2016 in order to help them comply with the conditions of their premises licence application. As the event date drew closer, it became clear that there were too many outstanding actions to be delivered upon to satisfy the regulations to ensure the safety of customers, staff and neighbouring residents of the event. “The council’s Environmental Health and Licensing team will keep the premises licence application open and look forward to supporting the event in the future when the various safety conditions have been met.”

The Impact Of Brexit On The UK Property Market The decision to leave the EU has been made. Who implements Article 50 and the process there is yet to be clarified, but we can assume that the process of removing ourselves from the EU is underway. This will have a significant impact here in the UK and Globally. Initially the Pound has dropped in value, the stock market has also fallen, especially the FTSE 250. Exporters and Financial services firms have been hit the hardest. Housebuilders have also seen significant drops in their share prices. Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank Of England has expressed that they will act swiftly to take any measures required to maintain economic stability. The monetary Policy Committee are meeting in July and an interest rate cut of 25 basis points is not unlikely. Depending upon what
direction the economy heads in we may also see quantitative eas-
ing back on the cards to stimulate investment. A short term fall in asset prices is not unlikely. However, this
combined with the fall in value of Sterling will draw in overseas
investors especially as the UK has a long track record of achieving strong economic growth. The fall in value of the Pound is likely to
cause inflation to return and we feel as though investors are likely to focus on growth assets towards the end of the year as a result. According to a report by Knight Frank they expect: “asset prices for the more robust sectors could be back to roughly where they were prereferendum by summer 2017” The overall impact on the market will be most significantly determined by the outcome of negotiations on the UK exiting.
The UK remains a great investment opportunity with very strong fundamentals. Property investment should always be looked at as a long-term investment, and the long term demand that exists in the UK, combined with the current shortage of housing makes a very strong case for buy-to-let. Overseas Buyers Snap Up UK Property As Pound Drops With the plunge in the value of sterling in the wake of the Brexit vote, overseas buyers have been taking the opportunity to snap up UK property and make a saving of around 12%. Agent Matthew Lavin of Benoit Properties International says there has been a surge in interest in buy-to-let property from investors in the Middle East, Hong Kong and other countries with currencies pegged to the dollar. Over the past seven days, the value of the pound has fluctuated wildly, reaching $1.5 the day before the referendum and falling as low as $1.31 afterwards – representing a 31-year low against the dollar. “UK property is now more than 10% cheaper in dollar terms than it was on Thursday night and for clients buying for the long term this presents huge opportunity,” says Matthew. “Over the weekend we sold six apartments in The Exchange Building in Liverpool to a group of buyers from Saudi Arabia who had seen the news about the falling pound and seized the opportunity. They saved around $130,000 collectively compared to what they would have spent on Thursday night. “It is also a huge bonus to our existing overseas buyers. One North African client who secured 10 student properties in Leeds with us in May saved $121,000 due to the exchange rate falling from $1.44 when he agreed the deal to $1.32 when he completed. “While the market may not be as favourable for domestic buyers, and clearly there is a lot of uncertainty for business, the fundamentals of the property sector remain strong and demand will continue to outstrip supply. “Our investors are typically looking five to ten years ahead. They see UK property market as a secure place to park capital for long-term income and growth. The added value presented by a weak GBP is an added bonus and presents an unmissable opportunity.“

Football club wins approval for artificial pitch Football Neighbours wanting better community facilities helped Steyning Town Football Club win approval for a new £435,000 3G pitch at the ground. They sent nearly 100 letters to Horsham District Council supporting the club’s application, which councillors have approved. The neighbours said the “third generational artificial grass” pitch at the Shooting Field would bring improved community facilities to the area and improve access.
Some neighbours were less keen, with more than 10 writing to the council to list six objections. They cited increased intensity of activity, increased noise and light pollution, out of character with the area, increased traffic and parking, draining concerns, and loss of privacy to neighbouring properties. The club told the council that it supports 19 teams, with six using the site as their home ground. It said the new pitch would provide an improved playing surface and allow all of the scheduled matches to be played at the site.
Steyning Town FC will lay a new 3G pitch
A report to councillors from the planning department of the district council said that the pitch would enhance the existing ground. Special Development Management Committee (South) councillors approved the recommendation to give the pitch the go-ahead at their meeting last week. The club said on its website that funding was in place and it hoped work could start in the next few weeks once other details had been agreed.

Horsham and Crawley unite for National Finals Two local derbies bring two
defeats for Billingshurst
The winning SE England team
Bowls Keith Barraclough - Billingshurst Billingshurst, playing a “local derby” away against Southwater, soon found themselves in trouble with the hosts scoring consistently. Resuming after the refreshment break 14 in arrears ‘Hurst managed to arrest their decline but found the deficit too great with Southwater claiming victory by 17 shots, 62 45. Best rink for Billingshurst went to rookie bowler Linda Stevenson, Alan Readshaw + Geoff Weller who
won 22-14. The second game of the week for Billingshurst was another “Local Derby”, this time against Pulborough at home. The visitors found the green to their liking and were ahead by 12 shots after 9 of the allotted 18 end. ‘Hurst fought but could only gain 2 shots thus giving Pulborough a 12 shot win, 61 – 49. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Gwen Delahaye, Marion Clark & John Bennet (+4) who just edged out Paul Clegg, Stan Morgan & Alan Readshaw (also +4) on “shots scored”.

Youth Basketball Four basketball players from the Horsham Hawks and Crawley Cagers who were selected to represent U13 South East England at the National Finals in Sheffield are officially National Champions. After competing against each other in this year’s Sussex Cup Final, Horsham’s Josh Tavolieiri and Josh Lea-Clayton joined forces with Crawley’s Will Hipperson and Tony Assogba to compete on the national stage against the other nine regions of England in front of the England selectors. The South East got off to the perfect start on the first day of the tournament with convincing victories over Yorkshire and the North East before grinding out a
much tougher result over the East Midlands. The final game of the pool stages was against the North West with the South East securing a fourth consecutive win to top Pool B setting up a semi-final the following day against London. The other semi-final featured Pool A winners, the East, who would play the East Midlands. In a see-saw game against London it was the South East who kept their composure to gain a late one point victory in the fourth quarter and cement their place in the final. Meanwhile in the other semi-final the East were convincing winners over the East Midlands. In the Final the East got off to the stronger start pulling significantly ahead early on using their size and strength to dominate in-
side while the South East struggled to score. In the second quarter the South East responded by tightening up defensively and raising their intensity as they slowly clawed their way back into the game. As the second half developed the South East began to take control and edged ahead in the fourth quarter to secure the victory and a National Championship in front of a jubilant arena. As part of their selection all four boys have also been invited to join the South East Regional Performance Centre for 2016-17 which focuses on individual player development and forms part of Basketball England’s performance pathway programme.
Pulborough remain top despite a busy week Pulborough’s Malcolm Gray, Adey Stratton and Fred Bushby with the Stratton cup
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC The first of two friendly matches for Pulborough was at home to the Littlehampton Norfolk side where 4 triples played 18 ends with Pulborough getting the upper hand. Skip, Chris Etherington and team pulled out all the stops to win 12 points in the space of the
last 3 ends, finishing the top rink, 28/8. The final score was 94/40 to Pulborough. The away game against Billingshurst BC proved to be a tougher draw, with close results on all but 1 of the 4 rinks. John Brown and team struggled to find the run of the green before halfway but they managed to win 7 of the remaining 8 ends to win with a narrow margin, 14/10. Paul Dayand team
found themselves just 1 point ahead before the break, only to get a further 15 points in the second half to snatch top rink by quite a margin, 23/7. The final result was a 62/49 win for Pulborough. Pulborough – needing a win to hold on to top spot in the league travelled to the Witterings in the WSBL. Malcolm Gray and team couldn’t match their oppositions pace but the other 3 teams fared better, with skip Ivan Salmon and team scoring a 5 on the final end to achieve top rink 23/13. Pulborough exceeded their own expectations by leaving the Witterings with another 8 league points from a 79/71 victory. In the annual Stratton Cup eight drawn pairs competed over 3 rounds of 6 ends all resulting in Malcolm Gray and Fred Bushby playing against Joyce Woods and Mick Ayling, with the former taking the win by 3 points. At the Storrington Open Paul Day, Chris Etherington and John Brown worked their way through to the final round to beat a team from Brighton and take the prize money and trophy, a fantastic achievement against tough opponents. Finally, Steve Adsett has made it through to the semi finals of the County Singles Unbadged competition
Park’s Frank Thomas through in Champion of Champions Bowls David Spurr - Horsham Park BC Horsham Park enjoyed another successful afternoon when they beat Hawth Bowls Club by 13 shots, 69 shots to 56. Park won well on 2 rinks and closely lost the other 2 rinks. Park’s top rink, skipped by Harry Smith, dominated most of their game winning by 9 shots, 17 to 8. Park’s other winning rink was skipped by Ian Holmes team who played consistently throughout and won by 8 shots, 22 to 14. Park’s 2 losing rinks skipped by Ray King and Shirley Stone, both lost by 2 shots. Both Park teams were well ahead at tea but in the second half the Hawth players staged a fighting comeback to finally win in closely fought battles. Horsham Park lost their away game at Newdigate Bowls Club
by 17 shots, 63 to 80 with Park only winning on one of the four rinks. Park’s top only winning rink was skipped by David Peters with Bryony Wood and John Howberry-Gale who led for most of the game and finally won by 7 shots, 20 to 13. Ian Holmes’ rink was 15 shots to 9 up on end 14 but lost the next 4 ends and eventually lost by 2 shots, 15 to 17. David James’ rink had a close game throughout and was up by 1 shot on end 14 but struggled to recover when Newdigate took 8 shots on end 16. Horsham Park’s Frank Thomas is through to the quarter finals of the Mid-Sussex Champion of Champions where the top bowlers from all the Mid-Sussex clubs compete to be declared the Champion of Champions. Thomas defeated Barry Torode of Downsman by 7 shots, 21 to 14.

return to the misfortune that has plagued much of his and his teams season with both cars forced into retirement. At his home Grand Prix at Silverstone Palmer retired on lap 38 due
to gear box problems after starting from 18th on the grid. Palmer’s team mate Kevin Magnussen made it to lap 50 before he too was forced to retire but the mixed track conditions presented scant opportunity for either driver to advance from their grid starting positions, with both Palmer and Magnussen caught in traffic before their retirements. A frustrated Jolyon Palmer summed up his teams disappointment in saying, “Today wasn’t the result I wanted for my home race. It was going reasonably well on the wet tyres at the beginning of the race and then we did a good stop for the intermediate tyres. Things were looking up: I got ahead of Kevin and I was catching Romain Grosjean. We retired the car as there was a strange feeling with the gearbox, more as a precaution as at that stage we were two laps down”.

Billingshurst escape the basement despite defeat Sussex Premier League Bexhill 253-8 declared (53 overs) Billingshurst 197 all out (46.1 overs) Bexhill won by 56 runs
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Following frustrating abandonments on the previous two Saturdays, former Horsham captain Scott Stratton made Billingshurst’s highest individual total of the season – 98 – but his side were denied victory because of an outstanding all round per-
formance by Bexhill’s evergreen Aussie Sam Roberts. Billingshurst were missing Abidine Sakande, playing for Sussex against Pakistan, but Tom Haynes bowled well, taking 5-45. Roberts, though, scored 115 opening for Bexhill, enabling a declaration giving the hosts five extra overs to bowl out Billingshurst. Daniel Doran took two wickets and Ben Williams another but the 254 run victory target demanded a sound platform on which to build. However, Billingshurst made life difficult for themselves when early wickets tumbled as they stuttered
to 57-6. Joe Cox, previously assistant groundsman at Horsham,

new member and first female was Michelle Garratt (55.53). The rest of the teams results were: Paul Yokom 52.44, Derek Buckman 56.54, Dave Dawson 57.54, Finbarr Cotter 59.09, Natasha Heasman 61.20, Richard Barron 62.12, Nicky Paton 63.09, Viv Underhill 64.09, Paul Arnold 65.33, Caroline Bransden 66.13, Nici Eyre 67.35, Fiona Clifton 68.28, Stephanie Charman 70.22, Diane Berry 71.06, Fiona Lear 71.23, Sally Arnold 71.28, Edna Clark 73.21, Paul Chandler 74.33, Christine Verlande 85.09, Jenny Boyd 87.03, Victoria Saunders 88.55.
Horsham’s 21 year old overseas player Jofra Archer was delighted to make his debut for Sussex in the county’s match against Pakistan at Hove, the tourists’ last warm up match ahead of the Lord’s test. As a regular player for Sussex 2nd XI Jofra had been very much on Sussex’s radar and said: “After the Sussex seconds game against Essex at Horsham the coach told me that I’d be playing against Pakistan at Hove.” Right-arm fast medium bowler Jofra has demonstrated his ability to extract pace from an unconducive wicket and can also hit a long ball, as proved at Roffey last year playing for Middleton when his massive six cleared the boundary trees and a garden before crashing through an upstairs bedroom window. Jofra played for the West Indies U19 side and is a friend of Sussex and England’s Chris Jordan, a fellow
Scott Stratton, batting mid order, introduced stability and a hint of victory in partnership with Tim Weston (24), but in a lengthy spell Roberts took 7-69, Billingshurst falling short despite late resistance from Jay Hatard and Shane West. Scott Stratton told the District Post: “We didn’t knuckle down early in our innings and couldn’t recover from that. It was a wicket for spin and their left armer Roberts flighted it well - I was disappointed to walk past one and get stumped. We’ve struggled to put out a consistent side but have been showing signs of playing
Barbadian, adding: “CJ encouraged me to return to England to pursue whatever options might be available to me!” Last Friday other Sussex players had arrived home in the early hours from a floodlit T20 match in Cardiff, but Jofra, declaring himself fully fit from a recent imjury was bright eyed and bushy tailed and soon impressed spectators at Hove, finishing day one with 4-49 in a fully committed spell of nippy seam bowling. Unfortunately drizzle prevented any play on the final, third, day, but, in batting friendly conditions, Jofra came away with five wickets, three more than any other bowler. He also received a special round of applause when he clambered up onto the pavilion roof to retrieve the ball after a six was struck off a team mate’s bowling. Billingshurst’s Abidine Sakande also played for Sussex, a dropped catch preventing him from taking a wicket. And, Horsham’s 19 year old left arm pace bowler George Garton steps up from England’s U19s to selection for the England Lion’s squad for the tri series against Pakistan A and Sri Lanka A starting at Cheltenham on July 18, national selector James Whitaker saying: “We feel the new faces will benefit from the experience of exposure to Lions cricket, Head Coach Andy Flower adding: “We’ve had quite a large transition from last winter’s lions squad to the national side, which makes this a challenging series against some experienced cricketers from Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but it will provide a great opportunity for our young players to test themselves.”
better in recent weeks, so we’re still positive and our next game is a big one for us.” Billingshurst’s 11 points from the Bexhill encounter move them off the bottom of the table, three ahead of Worthing, but 55 behind Brighton & Hove. Billingshurst entertain Worthing at Jubilee Fields tomorrow (Saturday 16), looking to avenge their defeat in a low-scoring affair at the Manor Sports Ground in May, when Worthing notched up their sole win of the season. Last week Worthing were bowled out for under 100 again - in a heavy defeat by Hastings.

Dramatic win catapults Roffey to second George Fleming hit Roffey’s winning runs
Sussex Premier League Cuckfield 249-9 (58 overs) Roffey 251-8 (51.5 overs) Roffey won by 2 wickets
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey pulled off a pulsating win from the penultimate ball of the final over, the match having almost as many twists and turns as Spaghetti Junction. After Cuckfield had crashed to
25-4 with their 24 year old Aussie Jordan Silk, with extensive first class experience for Tasmania, back in the hutch after trying to sweep a straight ball from George Fleming, it appeared that Roffey’s legendary tea would be taken early before the hosts coasted to a straightforward victory. However, Cuckfield, who had begun the match second in the table, fought back hard during marathon economical spells from Leigh Harrison and George Fleming (4-68 from 24 overs). A series of productive stands, notably featuring Thomas Weston (64), Harry Clark, 53 not out and Chris Mole, 48, enabled Cuckfield to set a testing 250 run target, 85 runs coming from the last ten overs, despite Luke Barnard’s four scalps. Although Roffey suffered an early loss, they reached 93 before the next wicket fell and on 192-2 victory was a routine stroll. Even when Theo Rivers went for an excellent 90, including 14 fours and 2 sixes, there was no cause for concern because Usman Khan was going well with great support. But, after Usman’s departure for 63, Roffey slumped to 217-6, in the
doldrums with 33 still needed. Nick Patterson took four wickets but had to be carried off, injured during Matt Davies’s dismissal. Matt then sportingly took the field as a substitute only to catch Josh Fleming. With six men on the boundary fours were hard to come by and when Chris Webb was run out three runs were needed off as many balls with only Luke Barnard to come. George Fleming allowed himself a one ball sighter before calmly threading through the winning four at 8pm with the luxury of a delivery to spare. The win enabled Roffey to leapfrog Cuckfield into second place, ten points behind Horsham with a game in hand, Matt Davies telling the District Post: “One of the best games up here for a long while! That was a good deck, we’ve got a long batting line up and having such a settled side week after week gives us a great advantage!” Cuckfield’s coach, former Sussex and Surrey spinner Chris Waller summed up with: “That was just a great game of cricket!” Roffey have an away trip to seventh placed Hastings tomorrow (Saturday 16).

Horsham stay top despite disappointing defeat Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 199 All Out (56.1 overs) Horsham 150 All Out (43.3) Brighton & Hove won by 49 runs
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham took the field with a severely depleted side and came away defeated despite a brilliant bowling performance from leg spinner Michael Munday. With Will Beer and Jofra Archer playing for Sussex against the Pakistan tourists (with Brighton’s captain, Philip Salt), George Garton injured and Craig Gallagher, Joe Ludlow and Jamie Thornely all unavailable, Sussex relented and released Tom Haines. But, the danger of Horsham slipping on a banana skin at the Nevill Sports Ground was real, much depending on Horsham’s senior players. Horsham inserted Brighton, who got off to a good start, reaching 50-1 before the introduction of Munday. At Horsham in the first match of the season Michael took 6-10 against Brighton. In the return fixture he was even more productive, with 8-64 from 22.1 overs and he also ran out Chris Atherton. But, with seven batsmen making
useful contributions the 200 run target was unlikely to be straightforward. Replying, Horsham soon found themselves in trouble at 5-2, following which Tom Haines made 39 and Michael Thornely 32, but once they were out only Sam Cushing with a well constructed 44 was able to stay long enough to pose a serious threat and there was to be no recovery from 95-7. As a county pro in 2007 Michael Munday took 8-55 for Somerset against Nottinghamshire but his eight wicket haul against Brighton was his first for Horsham and he told the District Post: “It wasn’t a great batting wicket and there was some help for me, but perhaps they got a few too many runs. It was great that Jofra got his opportunity for Sussex and that gave someone else the chance to play for us. Brighton fielded very well – JJ (Horsham captain James Johnson), Michael Thornely and Tom Haines all went to good catches and that broke the back of our innings; a very disappointing outcome!” With 12 points from the game Horsham remain top on 221 and tomorrow (Saturday 16) return home for a testing encounter against Preston Nomads, to whom they lost at Fulking early in the season.
Gold medallists Ben Ratcliffe and Zoe Gaudiano performing in Turin
Sports Acro Gymnastics Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham Gymnastics Centre’s Sports Acro squad have returned from the prestigious Turin International Acro Gymnastics competition with all 10 gymnasts reaching the finals and with Aimee Tolhurst and Madeline Kent taking Silver, missing out on Gold by a mere 0.1 of a mark, and Benjamin Ratcliffe and Zoe Gaudiano securing Gold by over three full marks. The huge competition - held over three days in hot humid conditions in the Italian city of Turin – had teams from Switzerland, Hungary,
Italy, Russia, Poland, Austria, South Africa, Germany, and Uzbekistan as well as a number of British clubs taking part. All of the Horsham gymnasts exceeded expectations with those not in the medals finishing well within the top ten ahead of many gymnasts who regularly represent their country at International level. As well as Horsham’s medal winners Emily Steere, Zoe Schubert and Natalie O’Hara finished in 5th and Georgia Brock, Ella Nelson and Phoebe Rochead in 7th - all achieved in competition with a large number of competitors. Head coach Ali Goss said, “I am thrilled with what we achieved
and proud of them all. The whole trip was a fantastic adventure for them and I was impressed, but not surprised, by how determined and disciplined the whole squad were. My thanks go to fellow coach Ellie Stewart-Croker, Directors of Horsham Gymnastics Centre Steve and Mary Barritt, all the parents, and of course the skill and effort of our gymnasts for making it all possible.” In what has been a busy time for the squad attentions now turn to the British Championships on July 28 to 31 at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, where Horsham will be well represented.
