No summer of love for some pets Phil Dennett News Editor
Pet owners are more likely to heartlessly dump them in the summer months, says the Horsham-based Royal Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Statistics suggest it will be anything but a summer of love for hundreds of poor creatures, with one pet being abandoned every hour on average. The numbers recorded by the charity soar from a relative low of 599 rejected in May to 1087 dumped in July, with June at 830, August 834 and September 891. Every year nationally the charity is called out to rescue hundreds of animals across England and Wales after their owners abandon them and in many cases leave them for dead. In 2015 a total of 2,751 animals were rescued by the animal welfare charity with a peak in admissions in July. Now the society is bracing itself for another summertime influx of dumped animals
this year too, with some victims in Sussex. It is thought one contributing factor of people dumping their animals in the summer months is down to some owners heading off on holiday and not finding anyone to look after their pet while they are away. The charity’s Supt Simon Osborne said: “People often think that Christmas is the time we see the most abandoned animals - but it is actually the summer. “In the summer months the number of dumped animals we rescue spikes up in number - with one animal being collected every hour on average**. “Every day our inspectors face cases where animals have been left abandoned in fields, dumped in boxes, left for dead at the side of roads and even left outside our animal centres and hospitals. It is just heartbreaking. These poor animals are often just dumped without a care for their welfare or what might happen to them. “We will never know why these animals are just discarded like rubbish. It could be for any number of reasons. Whether it is the fact that more pets are abandoned in the summer because the nov-

elty of their Christmas present pet has worn off by the summer, they don’t want the responsibility of finding someone to look after their pet while they are away on holiday or whether more pets are found dumped because of the longer daylight hours we will never know. It could be any number of reasons. “All we know is that there is a real peak in the number of abandonments in the summer months - July in particular - and it is animal welfare charities like us at the RSPCA that are left to pick up the pieces. There is a huge strain on our resources at this time of year because of this. “Many abandoned animals that are rescued by the RSPCA are very badly neglected and poorly so need urgent vet care and often hospital treatment.” Some of the more disturbing cases the charity has seen so far this year include Bertie the Yorkshire terrier who was dumped with matted fur in a wheelie bin, Maverick the Staffordshire Bull Terrier abandoned at London Victoria coach station when his owners could not take him on holiday with them and Peanut the lurcher puppy that was left for dead under a bush.

Tennis players will see a makeover of the Horsham Park Courts. They will have to pay a reintroduced court fee of £6 an hour, but council leisures bosses say this will ensure courts are maintained well and also ensure players can have guaranteed use of courts at a chosen time, if noone has booked. Horsham District Council in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association, says the improvements include new fencing, new surfacing and remarking and a Clubspark gate entry system which will allow players to book and pay using their smartphone. It is intended that all four courts will be specifically for tennis during the summer months, however during the winter, the nets will be removed from two of the courts allowing football to take place. The new gate and booking system will be operational from Monday, with the main surfacing and fencing works being done later in the year to minimise disruption during the busy summer period. Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Cabinet Member for Community and Culture said: “I am delighted that by working together with LTA we have the opportunity of upgrading and increasing the use of our tennis courts. Following the loss of the tennis facilities at the Novartis site we have secured developer contributions which are enabling us to carry out significant improvements to the Horsham Park courts”. The Lawn Tennis Association is the national governing body of tennis in Great Britain. It said: “Horsham District Council is committed to encouraging more

tennis across the whole sector of the local community, and by working in partnership we are able to offer them our expertise on upgrading the courts, access to many coaching opportunities and guidance on encouraging more local tennis. “ We will also be assisting with the setting of a Local Tennis League which will be open to players of all ages and skill levels and will put local players in touch with each other.” More information on how the Local Tennis League will operate can be found at http://localtennisleagues.com and Horsham Park will be joining this League once the new gates are operational – keep an eye on the League website for updates. For several years the council has been unable to identify cost effective arrangements for the management of the courts with several approaches being adopted and aborted. The partnership arrangement with the LTA has enabled the council to work with them to adopt a well proved technological solution. The council has committed to the LTA that the income received will support ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the courts. The £6.00 per hour fee aligns with costs charged at other public courts, the LTA recommendation and the index-linked fee previously charged for Horsham Park tennis court hire. As charging has not yet commenced, it is difficult to accurately forecast annual income. The new charging arrangements will however ensure that our town can provide high quality yet affordable public tennis courts on a sustainable basis into the future.

Slinfold School Designs Flags for the Loxwood Joust Festival Year 4 and 5 pupils at Slinfold Primary School have created mediaeval style flags based on heraldry to be hung in the Field of Flags at the entrance to the Loxwood Joust Mediaeval Festival. Using the project as part of their curriculum work on fabric and royal crest designs, Adur class worked in groups to create the eye catching flags that will remain hung in the field of flags for the duration of the event. Mrs Hamer, Adur’s class teacher commented that “It was great to see the children having so much fun and we were delighted that the Loxwood Joust gave us the opportunity to take part in this creative project. The class worked hard to produce their flags with each pupil designing their own individual part of a flag. The children were encouraged to make up their own image that had meaning for them and this is shown in the wide vari-
ety of designs.” Using heraldry design features, the class learnt that different colours, objects and animals depicted different things, such as the colour red for military strength and bravery, gold for generosity, a dragon depicts a most valiant defender of treasure and eagles signify men of action. Rowan Joy, aged 9 said” Making our flags was an exciting thing to do and my group really enjoyed creating ours. Working out what my design would be was the best bit.” Classmate Monty Pitts age 9 said “I am really looking forward to seeing my flag up at the Joust. I went last year with my family and it was amazing” The Loxwood Joust takes place on the 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th August and is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood with ample Free Parking.

Ruth fights back to win award People in Care Awards to celebrate the achievements of West Sussex’s young people. Ruth was chosen for her constant bravery and determination in the face of many knockbacks and difficulties related to both her health and other factors. Ruth said: “I feel very happy and honoured. This year’s awards really showcased the amazing young people that we have in West Sussex “It’s taken away my whole life”. The words of Ruth Catchpole, 20, seem bleak as she talks about the illness that she has to learn to live with. But there is a more positive side to the story. and all of our effort. “I suffer with a rare genetic connective tissue disorder and it’s taken away my whole life but I’ve been working with the care leaver’s team and we’re getting me back on track and life is working out.” Hundreds of youngsters and their loved ones from across West Sussex attended the ceremony at Butlins, Bognor to celebrate the achievement of children and young people
looked after such as those in foster care and care homes. A total of 209 young people nominated from different services and organisations throughout West Sussex. Nominations were also made by schools, carers and the Children in Care Council. Young people from the Children in Care Council were involved in the organisation of the awards, supported by West Sussex County Council’s Young People’s Service. The other winners apart from Ruth were: achieving award Oliver Bailey Crocker, 12,; supporting award Melissa Tallon, 23; overcoming award Aland Dana, 14 and the Chris Lindfield Award Chloe Carr, 14. Stephen Hillier, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children - Start of Life, said at the awards: “This year’s awards really showcased the amazing young people that we have in West Sussex and illustrated that with hard work, tenacity and a supportive environment they can truly achieve anything they set their minds too. “The event also stands testament to the families who foster and adopt children, to those who work in our care homes and to our social workers. Because of them, our young people in care have had the opportunity to develop and grow into the fantastic young people I have seen here today.”
Vain burglars captured on camera The sign on the door says ‘Smile - You’re on Camera’. So that is what this gang of young burglars did. CCTV captured them breaking into a building at West Chiltington Golf Club. PC Grant Hebblewhite of Sussex Police said: “While nothing was taken from the disused building, they did cause damage gaining access and while inside. Aside from the actual break in, I am
concerned about one of the youths who appears to be carrying a large sword. “If you recognise them or have any information about the incident, please email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 628 of 04/07.” The incident happened at 8pm on July 2 and as a followup police have issued an appeal for witnesses.

Sponge-wielding staff win award Lee Neale presents award to Ian Sinfield
Squeezing sponges won bighearted fire station staff a regional award. Crews from Horsham, Storrington and Billingshurst were among those from across West
Sussex part in the national Fire Fighters Charity Car Wash, held in September and March. It was an opportunity for West Sussex residents to head down with their cars to their local fire
station to help raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity, which relies entirely on the generosity of local residents and the firefighting community. The efforts of the local firefighters helped the county’s service to raise a total of £4,173.40 for the charity, more than any other fire service in the South East. It won them a regional award for the hard work and dedication of raising money for such a good cause. Acting Chief Fire Officer Lee Neale (pictured) presented the regional trophy on behalf of the Fire Fighters Charity to service coordinator Ian Sinfield after West Sussex’s car washes raised the most money for the charity in our region. Ian said: “This is a massive achievement, but we couldn’t have done it without the people who came along and had their car washed! “We know as a fire service how much vital work the Fire Fighters Charity carries out - so well done to all crews and members of the public who took part” Lee said: “This is fantastic news for everyone involved. The Fire Fighters Charity exists for the benefit of fire services and our families and I would like encourage everyone to get involved whenever they can to allow the charity to continue doing its amazing work.” To find out events check out www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire For more information about the Fire Fighters Charity http://www. firefighterscharity.org.uk/

Celebrating New wardens will ease concerns about lack of local policing in a village, says a parish council chairman. Storrington now has two new neighbourhood wardens, Vanessa Green and Carol Boniface, paid by Horsham District and Pulborough Parish councils. Chairman of the parish council Ray Quested said: “The lack of uniformed presence which has been brought about by cutbacks in policing has not been well received. The introduction of neighbourhood wardens to our village will go a long way to ease our residents’ concerns in the community.” Residents will be able to contact the wardens from August 4, when they will have completed their
training. The numbers are 07584 337475/07584 337476 or at pulborough.wardens@horsham.gov.uk. on e mail. This is the first expansion of the district council’s Neighbourhood Warden Scheme in over a decade and will see the two wardens working alongside the parish council, emergency services and community groups for the benefit of the people of Pulborough. Organisers say that Neighbourhood Wardens provide a highly visible and reassuring patrolling presence that aims to help people feel safe. Based at Pulborough Police Station they have a broad remit that includes tackling environmental issues such as littering and dog fouling, through to working with
young people and the elderly. As an integral part of the Community Safety Unit, the Neighbourhood Wardens work with all sections of the community from elderly and/or vulnerable people through to young people and businesses to find solutions to problems whilst promoting community cohesion and resilience. Although dealing with low-level anti-social behaviour is part of their role, they are not a replacement for police officers or Police CommunitySupport Officers, but offer a complimentary service to address those issues of greatest concern to the local community. Cllr Kate Rowbottom, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing said: “I am delighted that, together with Pulborough Parish Council, we are able to employ two new Neighbourhood Wardens for Pulborough. The warden scheme already works well in Ashington, Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding and I am sure this service will benefit Pulborough’s residents over the coming years.” The wardens will work a shift pattern covering 30 hours a week. Further information on the Neighbourhood Wardens can be found at: www.horsham.gov.uk/ communitysafety/communitysafety/neighbourhood-watch Both wardens are pictured.

Horsham volunteers win regional award
Horsham fund-raisers for a charity that helps protect children were among those who won regional awards for their efforts. The North Sussex branch, which includes Horsham, won the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Branch of the Year title for the London and South East region. The branch raises about £50,000 a year and hosts a lot of events to generate income and raise the profile of the charity. The group won the award in the charity’s first ever Childhood Champion Awards, which put a spotlight on the charity’s unsung heroes who support its work. Re-

Wine Notes July 2016 If we ever get round to having a BBQ again in this disappointing summer wines will come to the fore. Rich food such as burgers or roasts meats needs a fairly robust wine to match its textures. Carmenere is grown mostly in Chile, which has an excellent example in the fruity yet soft Vina Ventisquero Root 1 Carmenere from Morrisons. If you have some spicey titbits on offer the Robert Oatley Signature Reisling 2015 from Western Australia, with slight lime overtones, will match them or be a great drink on its own. Same goes for the excellent Villa Maria Private Bin Pinot Noir 2014, from Co-Op and Asda among others, which is a cracker with salmon, red meat, and aged cheese, from Hailsham Cellars. Sous Le Soleil Du Midi has a well-priced (£5.99) Chardonnay 2015 which is neat with summer salads, and a Cabernet Sauvignon
at the same price which would partner BBQ red and white meats well. Cotes du Rhone is a good starting point for budget BBQ reds but I would always go for a Cotes du Rhone Villages for more quality. They will be mostly from the Syrah grape (Shiraz in Australia) but often other lesser noble varieties are blended in such as Carignan and Grenache. For very special occasions the beautiful Taittinger Nocturne Rose City Light non vintage champagne is class in a glass. Rose wines are great fun and Villa Maria Private Bin Rose from New Zealand is sip and chat wine. La Versant Rose has a beautiful pink colour from 100 per cent Grenache Noir and is a great salmon match, from the Wine Cellar Club. The seductive Haut Vol Rose has a bottle elegant enough for a vase. Celebrating successful season
Plenty to talk about A 33 per cent increase in membership is just one of the reasons Horsham Speakers Club has to celebrate at the end of what it describes as an exceptional season. One of the biggest clubs in the national organisation, the Association of Speakers Clubs, the club is known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere and welcomes speakers from the most nervous and lacking in confidence to the most experienced and professional. It says its highlights include: 1.Record membership thanks to eight new members joining, making a total membership of 32 and an average of 20 members attending each meeting. 2.Six members achieving their Interim Certificate of Achievement (Level 5) award and 2 members achieving their Certificate of Achievement (Level 10), both certificates benchmarking the speakers’ improvement and development of certain skills. 3.Four members making progress towards their Advanced Certificate. 4.Hosting the club’s annual speaking competitions, with winning members going on to participate in the Association of Speakers Clubs (ASC) South Area competition, and eventually reaching the national semi-finals. 5.Visits and educational sessions from the ASC National President, William Warren and other expert guests, including sessions on speech construction.
6.A wonderful evening at the HSC Annual Dinner at the Ghyll Manor Hotel, Rusper. 7. Club member and ex-ASC National President, Gwyn Redgers, publishing his book ‘My Speaking Journey’. 8. Welcoming its youngest speaker to date, 10 year-old Greta Pitts. The club says it has some big plans for the 2016/17 season, including a refresh of its website and the organisation of two club social evenings for the summer. As well as the usual busy programme of speeches, impromptu speaking and educational sessions, it is also hosting the ASC 2017 National Conference at the Gatwick Hilton in April 2017. The club will re-convene for its first meeting of the new season on September 13. John Egan, President of Horsham Speakers Club, said: “As the Club continues to go from strength to strength, we look forward to welcoming more visitors and members who love or loathe public speaking and are seeking to improve their skills in a fun and supportive environment. The 2016 / 17 season is set to be our best yet.”. For more information visit www. horshamspeakers.org.uk or email club membership secretary Lucy Pitts at horshamspeakers@gmail. com

Boost to £600,000 church roof repair work Worshippers raising money to urgently repair a church roof have been given a boost from a special fund. St. Mary’s Church at Horsham, the oldest existing building in the town, has been given a grant of £59,300 from the Listed Places of Worship: Roof Repair Fund towards the expected £600,000 cost of carrying out urgent repairs. The grant requires match funding by St. Mary’s to cover the cost of the essential repairs. In recent months it has been necessary to place buckets inside the building to collect water leaking through the roof. Church leaders say the roof repair work must be executed promptly in order to prevent further damage to the fabric of the building. The church said: “St. Mary’s Church is grateful to have been awarded the grant, but is well aware that the money will only cover a proportion of the most urgent repair work to the roof. “A significant roof restoration project, in the region of £600,000, is proposed for major maintenance
and repair work to the fine Horsham Stone roof on this Grade 1 listed building. “The Church roof is beautiful, a treasure created by the artistry and craftsmanship of our forefathers that needs to be preserved for the future generations of the people of

It has been associated with the life and worship of the community and in continuous use for nearly 800 years. A Norman church once stood on the spot of the present church and some remains are in the tower, the west door and the north- west wall. A new church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, was completed in about 1247, when Horsham was a rapidly expanding market town. Over the centuries residents have worked to maintain and enrich the church and the latest project is meant to preserve the church for future generations.

Village show called off £3,000 from the 2015 profits to various village projects. We hope to be able to raise enough interest from Villagers to be able to run a show in 2017. “The Village Show is organised and run by just a few local people . “Last year saw the retirement of eight key members of the team and four the previous year: they had all been involved for many years and were vital to the success of the show. Unfortunately we have not been able to replace them. We have a chairperson but need volunteers for the following roles: Treasurer, Secretary, Grounds Marshall Exhibit co ordinator and MC “Roles can be shared and only require an hour or so each week and a few more on show day. We would also welcome more helpers during the preparation and on the day itself, putting up gazebos, display boards, tables and chairs etc., extra hands and legs are always appreciated. Anyone interested in helping next year may contact Amanda Drennan: 01798 812099 drennanx4@gmail.com or Anne Sugarman: 01798 813 563 alanandanne.t21@btinternet.com
Award for hospice workers Celebrating
Workers at St Catherine’s Hospice have won recognition for their high standards. After the fun of the recent visit by Steve Cram, the hospice has heard it has been awarded the highest rating of “outstanding” following its recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission. A team of inspectors visited the hospice, which is based in Crawley but also serves a wide area beyond the town. They were asked to assess
whether St Catherine’s as an organisation is safe, caring, effective, well-led and responsive to the needs of those who are under its care. Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive of St Catherine’s, said: “This is a fantastic result for St Catherine’s and more importantly, a fantastic result for the people we care for. We’re proud and privileged to provide end of life care to support this community. We receive tremendous support in return. We
couldn’t do our work without local people and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helps make St Catherine’s so special; our volunteers, staff, fellow healthcare professionals and supporters. Each helps us to deliver the outstanding care that the CQC has recognised.” If you would like to find out more about how you can support St Catherine’s please visit www. stch.org.uk or call 01293 447361. A village show started to mark the end of World War 1 will not be run this summer because there are not enough people to run it. The West Chiltington Show began as the West Chilington Fete and Flower Show in 1919 as part of peace celebrations and was later supported by the famous actor the late Norman Wisdom, who lived in the community. While successive generations have kept the show running in various forms the few remaining organisers this year have been unable to find a new generation to step in after losing many long –established helpers. The show was halted by the Second World War but keen villagers revived it to run consistently until this year’s decision to cancel it. But it might not be the end of the show. Villagers hope that enough people might come forward to organise an event next year. A message on the village website says: “With great regret the 2016 Village Show is cancelled; we have been unable to find enough volunteers to assist with the organisation of the show this year, despite distributing

The world’s first and only 100% invisible, 24/7 wearable, sweat-proof, shower-proof* for-months-at-a-time hearing device. *Lyric is water resistant, not waterproof, and should not be completely submerged under water
LYRIC OPEN DAY
Wednesday 27th July 2016 At South East Hearing Care Centres, we are pioneers of the latest hearing technology and are currently offering free of charge trials of the Phonak Lyric hearing aid. As one of the first hearing healthcare practices in the UK to fit this revolutionary product, we are now looking for volunteers with a hearing loss, to come and try this technology with us. Lyric is a breakthrough technology from Swiss hearing healthcare company Phonak. The soft hearing aid is comfortably inserted in the ear canal and
remains in for months at a time, and due to its position in the ear canal, is completely invisible with a natural sound quality. The trial is completely free of charge and without obligation, and you will be helping us to learn and study this unique proposition in our local community. If you are able to help us with this project, please call us and we will arrange an appointment with one of our hearing healthcare professionals.

Students at Collyer’s swapped the classroom for the kitchen The college students got their hands on experience with guest chef Javier Asensio and teacher Milagros Herguedas making some delicious paella! Spanish teacher Milagros Herguedas said: “There really is nothing more traditional than a paella, so we decided it would be a good idea to get cooking! Learning Spanish or any foreign language is not only about the language, but learning about the culture and traditions. Paella is certainly a unique Spanish tradition.” Vice Principal Steve Nicholls said: “What a creative way to learn about Spanish culture! I
must make sure I’m invited along if Milagros runs this particular practical exercise next year. Or maybe I could pick up Advanced Spanish as a student in the evenings?!” Milagros said : “It was an extremely fun part of the lesson and I was really pleased with how the students really threw themselves into it. After an excellent team effort, they produced tasty paella, definitely fit to grace any Spanish dinner table!” We had a master lesson on how to cook a traditional paella from our special guest, the talented Javier Asensio, who
kindly shared his mouth-watering family recipe. Javier said: “This particular rice dish was historically made by people from poorer Spanish backgrounds; making the most of what was available to them: rice, rabbit and seasonal vegetables. These days chicken and seafood paellas are popular variations.” Assistant Principal Melanie Russell said: “Huge thanks to Javier and Milagros for cooking up this great opportunity for our students to learn about Spanish culture! This really was a tasty treat for everyone!”

Students met with other top AS physics students from across the UK and get to experience life as a University of Oxford undergraduate student. School headteacher Mr Nick Wergan said: “This comes as no surprise to us. Adam has always impressed us with his zest for Physics. Brides are giving their dresses away in Horsham to help a charity. They have donated outfits to the recently launched bridal section at the St Catherines’s Hospice shop in the Bishopric. The shop has launched an upstairs bridal department where bridal parties can shop in style in an elegantly decorated area complete with a luxurious changing space. Mother of the bride and bridesmaids outfits, including veils and accessories, are available to browse too. Shop manager Teresa Harris said: “We are really excited to launch our exclusive bridal section and hope it will attract local brides to come along and see us. We have received some incredibly generous donations and have some really beautiful dresses on offer. There is a real mix of styles, from plain to ornate, from white to cream and oyster coloured. We have got some 1960s designs and some of our dresses are brand new. We recently had a £150 BHS gown donated with the

Roary drops in for Big Cat Nap
Drivers defy drink-drugs police checks in alarming numbers Too many drivers caught
Roary and friends
Roary the Lion took pride of place as staff from the Horsham-based Born Free Foundation hosted its Big Cat Nap. The Born Free team was joined by the cuddly mascot for tea in the grounds of its office at Broadlands Business Campus, with ‘Sleepy Selfies’ taking over Twitter and cat-themed picnics taking place around the country.
Kuoni staff spent an hour chilling out at their Deepdene Avenue headquarters in Dorking. Inspired by big cats in the wild, who like their domestic cousins, spend a lot of their time asleep, The Big Cat Nap aimed to raise awareness of the many problems they face and also produce funds for Born Free’s big cat projects.

Alarming number of drivers continue to drink alcohol and take drugs before getting behind the wheel despite publicity about roadside police checks. Those who take a chance with their life and those of others include 204 motorists were arrested in Sussex during a summer crackdown on drink and drug-driving. They included the Horsham district. Sussex Police describe the figure as alarming in view of the constant warnings about the dangers and checks. The worrying statistic has been revealed after the conclusion of Operation Dragonfly, the Surrey and Sussex Police campaign, which ran from Monday June 6 to Sunday July 10. Officers acted on intelligence, and carried out dedicated patrols and stop checks, across the county during the 34-day period. In comparison, a total of 203 drink and drug-driving arrests
were made in Sussex in the last committed campaign, which also ran for 34 days and included the whole of December and the first three days of 2016. Sergeant Phil Badman, of the Surrey and Sussex Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “The figures compared to our Christmas campaign demonstrate that no matter what time of year it is, people still continue to take risks by driving under the influence of drink and drugs in Sussex. “In conjunction with the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, we work hard to hit home the message that drink and drug-driving will not be tolerated, and the consequences that such actions could have on our roads. Despite this, a small minority appear to either ignore our advice or simply think they are above the law. “One thing is for sure – if you are caught driving under the influence of drink or drugs, you will be dealt with robustly. This includes a
minimum of a 12-month ban, and can include heavy fines, community sentences and, in some cases, a prison term. It can also affect the cost of your insurance policy and future employment, and the risk really isn’t worth taking.” Some arrests have come as a result of an increasing number of reports from members of the public, and officers are encouraging law-abiding road users to continue to report offenders. Sgt Badman added: “There are a number of ways people can report suspected drink or drug-drivers, whether it be via text, phone, email or our website, and we would urge people to keep the reports coming. “We can’t be everywhere at once, and receiving intelligence from the public helps us to locate, identify and catch criminals, preventing the risk to themselves and others at the earliest opportunity. “It’s also important to add that while we carry out dedicated patrols at Christmas and during summer, we will of course continue to arrest anyone suspected of driving while under the influence in Sussex at any time of the year.” People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org). To keep up to date with officers looking for drink or drug drivers, follow #opdragonfly on Twitter. If you know someone is driving while over the limit or after taking drugs call 999.

We are pleased that Scope is able to continue running the School for Parents. “We are now planning for the future of the DVLCC and this includes a new location by January 2017. We want to continue to support families with very young children with cerebral palsy and other motor learning impairments not only with an early intervention service but also with a range of new services, in a sustainable way. We are looking forward to working with our wider community to make this happen.” James Watson-O’Neill, director of services at disability charity Scope, said: “We are disappointed that the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC) is no longer able to fund the School for Parents, based at Ingfield Manor School. “We will take over the cost of running the School for Parents. “All members of staff that DVLCC funded to work at the School for Parents will continue to work for Scope.”

sporting career before taking part in a question and answer session where patients quizzed him about disability sport amongst other things. Steve also took part in exercises, such as weight lifting, with the patients and spoke about the importance of keeping active. Patient, Ken Gurd, said, “I had a chat with Steve about the forthcoming Olympics and previous Olympics. I thought it was excellent he joined in the exercises with us, he was a real team player.” Additionally during his visit, Steve met with a patient staying
on St Catherine’s Inpatient Unit and learnt about the care he has received from the local hospice. Recognised as one of the finest athletes of his generation, retired track and field athlete Steve, is a world, Olympic, European and Commonwealth medallist. Nicknamed “The Jarrow Arrow” he was the first man to run 1500m in under three minutes and 30 seconds. His hospice visit was organised by Clydesdale Bank, a corporate supporter of St Catherine’s, who also selected the hospice as their charity of the year at their annual networking event. Justin Ellis from Clydesdale accompanied Steve on his visit to St Catherine’s. He said, “It was great to arrange for Steve to visit St Catherine’s, which does such vital work caring for terminally ill people and their family and friends in our local community. We hope the patients enjoyed Steve’s visit and look forward to continuing to work with St Catherine’s.” Sarah Achuccaro, Corporate Development Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “We’re really grateful to Steve and Clydesdale Bank for providing such a special visit for our patients’. It was particularly nice to see the smiles on their faces as Steve got stuck in with the exercise class! It’s visits like these that help to lift our patients spirits.”
All day action for children Children are being offered outdoor activity days at the Woods Mill nature reserve near Henfield. At the sessions, run by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, Harry Potter Fans aged 6-11 years can learn how to use wood working tools to whittle their own magic wand to cast spells in the forest and forage for magic potion ingredients. Or they can learn how to build a campfire and practice lighting it using a fire steel. Once the kettle is boiled there will be hot chocolate to share around the fire circle. They can be inspired by birds and insect sounds to make a musical instrument from natural materials. From bug hunting to bushcraft, there will be plenty to keep the children busy. Places are available at Wild Woodies clubs on August 9 and 16 from 9am – 4pm. The trust says that children do not need to be accompanied by an adult as the clubs are fully supervised by trained and experienced staff. But is advises that booking is essential and for further information and costs visit www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/whatson or call 01273 497561.

Team behind £6million Horsham care home celebrates ‘topping out’
One of the UK’s leading independent care home providers, Care UK, has moved a step closer to delivering a new multi-million pound care home in Horsham, West Sussex, with a ‘topping out’ ceremony held on site to mark the latest construction milestone. The Horsham District Councillor for Holbrook East, Councillor Andrew Baldwin, joined with the team from Care UK and representatives from development, and construction partner, Castleoak, to place the final tile on the roof of the care home which is situated just on St Marks Lane. Part way through the 62-week construction programme, the project is on track to create up to 120 jobs, when the care home is fully commissioned and welcomes its first residents in November. Richard Smith, head of care home development for Care UK, said: “As the latest addition to a growing portfolio of residential care homes, this highly impressive new development represents a major investment for Care UK. When complete, the care home will boost the provision of quality residential care for up to 82 older people in Horsham and beyond, as well as creating jobs for local people. “We take a great pride in the build quality, layout and design of each individual care home – not least because these are all very important factors which can greatly impact the everyday experiences of those living in a care environment. “As work continues at pace in Horsham, Care UK’s vision for the home is well on the way to being realised and we wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge progress and celebrate the topping out with our construction partners and other stakeholders.” James Player, construction director at Castleoak, added: “We are proud to have been given the opportunity to build yet another exciting project for Care UK. The fact this is our 16th care home for Care UK, is a glowing endorsement of the relationship we have built with the healthcare provider over the past 10 years. “Together, we are focused on delivering a first class environment for the future residents; and I am confident the dedication and attention to detail, our team and supply

chain have applied to this project, will be demonstrated in the completed care home in Horsham.” Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives while promoting independence, the new care home will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities. The layout of the building will also facilitate the creation of close knit communities and will be configured into a series of individual suites, with a dedicated lounge/dining room. Each bedroom will have an en-suite wet room, together with a flat-screen television, adjustable profile bed, and a 24-hour nurse call system. Markets to be run by new firm Horsham Markets will be run by a new firm from September. Horsham District Council has awarded the next contract to run the Carfax-based markets to Lewes company Food Rocks. Current operators Aldred Associates did not bid for the contract. The existing contract, which ends on September 13, has been successfully run by Aldred Associates since 2011. There will be a transition to the new operators after September’s Horsham Big Nibble Food Festival. Food Rocks is an established food and local produce markets and events company and has been operator of the council’s Little Nibble Children’s Food Festival which has been a feature of the town’s Big Nibble event over the last two years. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “I’d like to express our great appreciation to PJ and Marion and all of the Aldred Associates team and their traders. They have built up our Carfax Markets under the current contract to be multiple award winners and put our markets on the map as an important attraction for Horsham Town centre. I hope that the public and traders alike will continue to support Horsham Markets as we move forward and will welcome Food Rocks who we are looking to build on everything that has been achieved by Aldred Associates.” Simon Teesdale, Director of Food Rocks, said: “Food Rocks are very excited to be taking over the running of Horsham Markets and we would like to thank and congratulate Aldred Associates for handing
over such a thriving, award-winning market. “We hope to continue this success story and contribute to the development and vibrancy of Horsham. Running the market is a wonderful way to show our commitment to supporting the fantastic artisan traders in Horsham and the surrounding areas and an opportunity to set up some exciting local festivals and events.” PJ Aldred, Director of Aldred Associates said: “We have had an exciting and rewarding five years which has seen the Saturday Local Produce market grow four-fold and the introduction of the Thursday market to the Carfax focussing on Street Food. It has also been very challenging running the Mixed Market which has continued to decline as most other towns’ general markets have. Whilst it was a very difficult decision not to re-tender
for the markets, we are looking forward to having more time for our Horsham shop and cafe. We are thrilled Food Rocks will be taking over the operation and we know they will be as committed to the markets and Horsham as we have always been.” The Horsham Markets contract covers the operation and marketing of the Carfax based markets on Thursdays and Saturdays and also specialist Sunday markets and market based events during the year. The council will be supporting discussions between operators, landlords and traders regarding a viable future location for the general market which was moved to Piries Place from Bishopric in 2014 and which has been finding trading difficult since the closure of the previous Waitrose store.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Revealed Mediaeval times were dominated by the feudal system and the role of Mediaeval Knights and their servants. It was the duty of a Mediaeval knight to learn how to fight and serve their liege Lord according to the Code of Chilvery and weapon practice would include enhancing their skills in the two handed sword, battle axe, mace, dagger and lance. A knight would then serve 40 days of each year in combat for his king and in exchange the knight would receive loot from battles, his own estate and a position in the Kings court.
An Interview with Mark of Loxwood, a Mediaeval Knight What is your name and occupation? I am Mark of Loxwood, poor Knight of Sussex. I fight for my Lord of Arundel in bloody battles wherever he sends me. It’s a hard life.
What is your aim in this life? To serve my Lord faithfully, bring misery to the French and one day to afford a manor and some land of my own.
Tell us something about your life that we would not know. When I go into battle, I go wearing a petticoat and a skirt. A petticoat is a small coat worn under my armour, and I wear a skirt of chainmail to protect my groin.
What skills are most important to you?
I must be ferocious in battle and keep my armour and weapons in good condition. As a Knight I must train every day, and know how to bring credit to my Lord.
Horsham audiences got a preview of HAODS’ summer production, William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, last Saturday, at the Horsham Festival in the Human Nature Garden. The audience was allowed a glimpse of the amazing costumes and makeup, plus a segment of the originally composed music and a selection of scenes, which
Is your occupation a solitary one?
I have my Lord, my comrades in arms and of course my Squire, whose job it is to clean my armour and take the rust from my weapons. If he does a good job he might earn a penny a day.
What do you eat and drink on a normal day?
I eat meat every day, with bread, cheese, nuts and fruit. I drink small beer and sometimes wine from France.
What is your most prized possession?
My sword, without it I would be of no use to my Lord.

gave members a flavour of what to expect if they purchased a tickets to the main show. Shakespeare’s best loved comedy tells the story of four runaway lovers, who find themselves right in the middle of an argument between the King and Queen of the fairies! At the same time, a troupe of not so professional actors are trying to rehearse a play to honour King
Theseus’ Wedding...and between the groups struts a mischievous fairy henchman, carrying a love potion capable of making anyone fall in love with the first person they see. Vintage & Steam at The Weald and Downland Step back in time and experience the nostalgic sights and sounds of an era when steam powered the country Visitors to the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum in Singleton, near Chichester, can enjoy all the bustle and excitement of a traditional Steam festival on the weekend of August 20 and 21, with full-size and model steam engines on display, and working around the Museum’s 40-acre site, which is set in the South Downs National Park. In addition to an extensive selection of full-size steam engines, there will also be a wide range of exhibits including: commercial vehicles, military vehicles, miniature steam engines, narrow gauge railways, model boats, and classic cars. On August 21, The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Portsmouth Region, will hold its annual club event at the show. A popular attraction at the event is the gallopers ride, powered by a Fowler Showman’s steam engine, which is at the centre of a small
traditional vintage fairground (small charges apply). Visitors to the show can also take a ride on the narrow gauge steam railway and enjoy displays in the Events Field arena, which will include the popular “steer a steam engine”. With vintage music and a themed tea tent, local crafts and traditional demonstrations, plus arena displays throughout the weekend, this is an event for all the family to enjoy. Brexit? It’s Business As Usual for Relocation Agent Network Members It would appear that amongst Relocation Agent Network members, the result of June’s EU Referendum has (so far) had little impact on the UK housing market. One week after the EU Referendum, Relocation Agent Network surveyed a group of its members to see what trends they were experiencing in each of their local housing markets. The results found that – on the whole – trends were relatively unchanged. When discussing the direct impact that the Referendum has had so far on the property market, over 90% stated that they had seen no housing transactions fall through as a direct consequence. 75% also noted that buyer enquiries have stayed the same since the result was announced. When asked whether survey respondents thought residential sales prices will rise over the next 18 months, 83% indicated they will stay the same. Similarly, 75% indicated that transactions in the sales market for the same period, will also stay the same. it would appear that survey respondents foresee a similar picture for the UK rental market. 66% reported that over the next 18 months, both rental rates and buy-to-let transactions will stay the same. The survey also asked respondents how long they thought any uncertainty in the UK property market would last. More than 66% think it will be six months, with an additional quarter suggesting 12 months. Peter Maskell, Director of Brock Taylor, the member of Relocation Agent Network in Horsham said, “So far we have seen Brexit make very little impact on Horsham’s local property market. Of course, the long term impact it will have is uncertain, but the summer months are traditionally a popular time to enter the housing market and 2016 is no different. If you have a property to sell, contact us today on 01403 272022 or visit our website www.brocktaylor.co.uk. We’re Relocation Agent Network’s appointed Local Expert for Horsham which means we have access to out of town buyers moving into the area.” ENDS About Relocation Agent Network. Flitecrew Trampoline Club excelled at National Championships

All the competitors - from Level 1 up to the highest Level 8 - had to qualify through a number of qualification scores recorded at previous competitions, and then had to be ranked in the top 8 in the country at each level / age to be able to compete. Flitecrew were thrilled to have 7 performers make it all the way through to the National Championships but then the results achieved from their gymnasts exceeded all expectations. At Level 2 Jessica Robinson won
Silver in the 9/10 yrs and Emma Redfern took Bronze in the 11/12 years. Morgan Purnell won a Bronze medal at Level 4 in the 9/10 years age group, while at Level 5 in the 13/14 years Corinna Towler took the Gold medal to become the National Champion. At Level 6 Verity Bashford achieved Silver in the age 15/16, while Ellie Clark matched Verity by taking Silver at Level 7 15/16 years of age. Head Coach Laurel Kennedy said, “I am thrilled at the results, the club has worked hard this year and it’s paid off, we are now looking forward to planning for 2017.”

Horsham Park’s all day competitions well supported Bowls Dave Snith - Sports Editor Cranleigh BC 61 - 93 Horsham Park BC Horsham Park had another successful evening when they played and won away against Cranleigh Bowls Club. Park won all 4 rinks and by 32 shots; the final score was Park 93 to Cranleigh’s 61. The Cranleigh green played well enabling some very competitive bowling. Park’s top rink went to David Peters with Kamran Nadim and Ros Medland who won by 11 shots, 23 to 12. Harry Smith’s team had another good game winning by 10 shots, 22 to12. This was closely followed by Skip Bryony Wood who won by 9 shots, 27 to 18. David James team had a much closer game but they fought well and took 5 shots over the last 3 ends to win by 2 shots, 21 to 19. Horsham Park Bowls Club held their Drawn Triples Competition which was an all
day event run on a round robin format. The morning sessions was interrupted by rain several times but after the lunch break the weather improved and the afternoon session was played in pleasant conditions. All players completed a total of 32 ends during the day with the winners and runners up being determined by shots scored and ends won. The winners were Robin Peters, Paul English and John Pickersgill with David James, Roger Leicester and Dawn Howarth being runners-up. In the Australian Pairs Competition, which was another all day event again run on a round robin format, the pairs were split into two divisions. Each pair played four games of six ends in their division with the winners of each division playing each other in the final. The winning pair was Robin Peters and John Pickersgill with David Spurr and Helen Stepney the runners-up.
Two wins for Pulborough Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Another competitive week for Pulborough Bowls Club began with the first of two fixtures in the Brookes Motors League, away against Crablands. The weather was less than kind, so both teams agreed to finish at halfway, meaning that Pulborough took the spoils, with 1 rink win and overall victory giving them 4 valuable points. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Chris Etherington, lead, July Day and number 2, Mick Ayling, 14/3. Next up was another league game this time against the Littlehampton based Norfolk Bowls Club. Pulborough won 1 of the 2 rinks, giving them 2 more league points against a tough team. Top rink was again Chris, July and Mick with a 6 shot lead, 21/15. A friendly local derby against Fittleworth was a new venue for
some of the Pulborough players. A unique green led to some interesting play on all 3 rinks, with tight scores across the board. At halfway Fittleworth had a 4 shot advantage, but this was gradually eroded, until the teams finished level after 18 ends. Top rink for Pulborough went to John Brown, Mick Ralph and Chris Etherington 18/14. This Sunday, July 24, is the second annual Family Fun Day at Pulborough Bowls Club where everyone is welcome with the gates opening at 2pm until 9pm. target bowls, skittles and junior bowls will all be available, alongside coaching for new players and competitions for those with more experience. Bowls will be provided, visitors are asked to wear flat shoes. The bar will be open throughout and bacon rolls will be available for just £1. A raffle will be held later in the day, with music and fun so the club invite all to come along and give bowls a try.

sponsible for its worldwide growth, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, who attended Horsham Park for Horsham’s 100th parkrun with his wife Jo. Slinfold Ladies getting into the swing ladies Golf Dave Snith - Sports Editor Played over two days and involving 36 holes of competition the Ladies Club Championship was held amid sunshine and showers at Slinfold Golf and Country Club. There were two trophies to be won - the Club Champion and Handicap Champion Plate – and both produced close high quality competitions. After a close fought battle Danielle Jones became the Club Champion for 2016, narrowly edging out Melanie Wedgbury who finished a close runner up. In an even closer competition, Cathy Downey just beat Sue Puttock on countback to win the Handicap Champion Plate. Lady Captain, Jill Meek, awarded the trophies and said: “Well done to all the Ladies who turned out
over the weekend and congratulations to Danielle and Cathy for their great achievements”. Slinfold Ladies have also won through to the Quarter-Finals of the Inter-Club Division Championship. Organised by the Sussex County Ladies Golf Association, the Championship is split into Divisions according to handicap with the winner of each division going through to the knockout stage. Slinfold Ladies won their Groups in Divisions 2 and 3 and so now enter the Knockout stage. Lady Captain, Jill Meek, commented: “I am delighted that our Ladies have qualified for the Quarter-Finals of Divisions 2 and 3, and special thanks go to Sue Puttock and Sue Thompson for captaining the teams. I should like to wish Slinfold Ladies all the best in their forthcoming matches”.

Roffey retain the Mirfield Cup in style Roffey continued their record of success in the Mirfield Cup
Hawks represent Sussex in South East Regional Tournament Basketball Dave Snith - Sports Editor
Mirfield Cup Final - Roffey v AJW Aviation AJW 96-6 (15 overs) Roffey 98-1 (11.5 overs) Roffey won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter This game was reduced to fifteen 6 ball overs because of concerns about the late evening light and Roffey inserted the Slinfold aviation company AJW, who were in the final after triumphing in a rain induced bowl out against Slinfold in their semi. There was an air of Roffey Old Boys about AJW with three former Roffey players in their ranks – Chris Plaister, Mike Norris and Dan Smith - and they set off well, Smith
opening the batting very positively, making a rapid 28. Plaister made 33 but wickets were falling too regularly and when Norris, batting down the order, was run out for 2 the possibility of posting a really challenging score evaporated, the 97 run target being disappointing after AJW’s promising start, Ollie Rivers and Tom Barnes each taking two wickets. Replying, after 10 overs Roffey had reached 71-1, only the clatter of wickets could change the course of the game but that was not to be, Roffey cruising home with 25 balls to spare, Chris Webb scoring 42 and Josh Fleming 39, both unbeaten. This was Roffey’s third appearance in the final in four years and in the 57 year history of the competition – named after a former
Horsham Cricket Club President – Roffey have carried off the trophy a record 16 times in addition to runners up spots. Roffey skipper Alex Collins told the District Post: “We really wanted to win this and it was great to notch up another cup victory in my first season of captaining our Mirfield side!”
Presenting the trophy Mirfield organiser David Horsman said: “We managed to beat the weather and then Roffey pulled off a good win – two victories and many thanks to Bob Daisley and Horsham President Barry Peay for their invaluable umpiring.” The evening Gullick Cup Final at Horsham Cricket Club has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, July 26
This year’s annual South East Regional Basketball Tournament took place at Surrey Sports Park in Guilford and featured teams from Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Wales. Six Horsham Hawk’s players were selected to play for Sussex with Meghan Stevens, Millie Lea-Clayton, Teagan Holden and Amber Hutchinson representing the U15 girls while Miguel Venturini and Harry Rose were selected for the U13 boys.
Despite narrowly losing to the eventual champions, Hertfordshire in their opening fixture the U15 girls went onto produce dominant displays over Wales and Middlesex before securing a thrilling two point overtime win over Surrey to take second place overall in their age category. Meanwhile, the U13 Boys got off to a very strong start with convincing victories over Kent and Hertfordshire before succumbing to Surrey and the eventual winners in the shape of a very strong Welsh side to take third place in their tournament.

Horsham sitting pretty after demolishing Nomads Horsham’s Michael Munday’s terrific run of form continues
Sussex Premier League Preston Nomads 132 All Out (46.1 overs) Horsham 135-1 (25.2 overs) Horsham won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham were without seven top players but brushed aside Preston Nomads (league champions six times since 2006), the game finishing before 5.15 with 37.4 overs to spare, Horsham cementing top spot with a 15 point lead over Cuckfield. Nomads elected to bat and on 35-1 there was no hint of what was to come, but once leg spinner Michael Munday was introduced the innings subsided for a totally inadequate 132. Tom Haines started the rot with an excellent catch before demonstrating his all-round capability with 3-24. Jonny Whiting again bowled well, but without reward and David Croshaw picked up a wicket in a useful opening spell, but once again Munday stole the show, his 18 over 6-40, including three LBWs and an Ollie Cross stumping, raising Michael’s league tally to 45, head and shoulders beyond any other contender. The ball
that bowled Carl Simon through the gate landed close to the cut strip and turned profusely to hit leg stump. Horsham needed to score at little more than two an over but Craig Gallagher and Tom Haines batted as if they had pressing appointments elsewhere – Craig’s 81 not out containing 10 fours and 3 sixes and Tom’s 33, also unbeaten, coming off 31 balls, Horsham romping home, evergreen Antiguan Simon bowling off a short run because of a hamstring injury, unusually going wicketless. Horsham Captain James Johnson said: “We restricted them by keeping it tight and taking regular wickets – Michael is in such a rich vein of form!” Former captain Craig Gallagher added: “It was a slow turner but there was no reason why they only got 132 – apart from Michael, he got a wicket in his first over and then bowled brilliantly again.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit current runners up Cuckfield and then on Sunday have a home tie in the Semi Final of the GrayNicholls Sussex T20 Cup against Brighton & Hove, 3pm start.

Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 181 All Out (40.1 overs) Worthing 102 All Out (30.5 overs) Billingshurst won by 79 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After facing seemingly certain defeat Billingshurst pulled off a remarkable, much-needed victory at Jubilee Fields. The final score suggests a comfortable Billing-
shurst win – it was easy enough in the end, but only after some erratic fluctuations during which the game could have gone either way. Billingshurst won the toss but soon doubted the wisdom of the decision when they crashed to 28-6 courtesy of poor shot selection and two excellent diving catches. Then, in a do or die attack, overseas player Thivanka Rataratne in company with number eight batsman Rob Woodman set about
the Worthing bowling in T20 mode, Rataratne hitting 10 fours and a six in his 59 and Woodman eight boundaries in his 52. Useful tail end contributions from Shane West and Ben Williams then gave themselves and the other bowlers something to defend, the 182 run target testing Worthing’s fragile batting which has failed to pass 100 on several occasions this season. After tea Andy Barr (4-26), bowling well with limited success so far this campaign, put Worthing on the rack by quickly dismissing their top four batsmen. Then Shane West (3-15) stepped in with two quick wickets, 9-4 stuttering to 27-6. Martyn Swift – after earlier taking 5-47 – attempted an unlikely recovery with an unbeaten 33 and although late order runs were added, Ben Williams chipped in with 2-16 as Worthing sank to another heavy defeat. Williams has resumed the captaincy saying: “Andy Barr bowled brilliantly, ripping through their top order and Shane complimented him perfectly at the other end.” Barr adding: “Conditions were against us because it was a good wicket but we fielded well, especially Tom Haynes – he’s got the safest hands.” At the foot of the table Billingshurst have increased their lead over Worthing to 19 points but are 33 behind Brighton ahead of their must win home clash with the seasiders on July 30. Meanwhile, tomorrow (Saturday) Billingshurst have a tough away trip to Roffey.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK We really wanted to win this and it was great to notch up another cup victory Alex Collins
Roffey romp home with a strong win at Hastings Sussex Premier League Hastings & St Leonards Priory 206-6 (58 overs) Roffey 207-1 (31.2 overs) Roffey won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sixth placed Hastings will be glad not to have to play Roffey again this season. In the league Roffey beat them at home in May and then eliminated them in the Quarter Final of the Gray Nicholls Sussex T20 Cup. Last Saturday’s result was no different: after Hastings were put in Leigh Harrison and George Fleming took early wickets, reducing the hosts to 15-2. Former Sussex 2nd XI player Elliot Hooper reached 100 not out and Finnegan Hulbert made 52 but their support batsman were less impressive and progress was slow, Luke Barnard taking 3-76 in a marathon spell. When Roffey batted Hastings needed to make regular inroads if they were to have any realistic chance of defending their modest total but the six bowlers used made little or
no impact. Hastings were undone by a clinical trademark batting display by Rohit Jagota, whose 77 ball 105 included 12 fours and 5 sixes. Theo Rivers with 84 not out completed the chase accompanied by Usman Khan, Roffey’s 9 wicket 22 point win coming with more than 20 overs unused. Cuckfield sneak back into second place after a maximum point win, heading Roffey by 3 points - Roffey with a game in hand are now 18 behind leaders Horsham. Roffey Captain Matt Davies told the District Post: “At half time we didn’t really know how good a score 206 might be but Rohit took their bowlers to task and Theo batted well again, too, so Hastings didn’t get nearly enough runs!” In form Theo Rivers added: “They didn’t bowl very well and I’m in good nick at the moment. It was really great to bat with Rohit today, but after a couple of decent scores I need to get a hundred!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Roffey return home to play Billingshurst, before on Sunday they travel to Middleton for the Semi Final of the Gray-Nicholls Sussex T20 Cup, 3pm start.

Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor The Ryman League 2016/17 fixtures have been released giving Horsham an opening day – Saturday August 13 - home match against Carshalton Athletic. Dom Di Paola’s side will be further tested three days later with a Tuesday evening trip to South East London to take on one of the preseason favourites, Greenwich Borough. Over the Christmas and New Year period Horsham are home to Godalming on Boxing Day and away to Molesey on New Year’s Eve before travelling to Lewes for the first game of 2017 on January 2. Supporters will have to wait until April 8 for the attractive trip to Guernsey before finishing, what will hope to have been a successful season, at home to Hythe Town on April 22. The draws for the FA Cup and FA Trophy have not been as kind as they could have been for Horsham with a difficult away fixture at either Sevenoaks Town or Sporting Club Thamesmead on Saturday August 20. In the FA Trophy the Hornets have been given a long away trip to Potters Bar Town; this will be played on
