Designs on a career for gifted duo Two gifted designers had their work shown off at a fashion show. The 2016 Bath Spa Graduate Fashion Show starred two talented ex-Collyer’s students, Ella Mash and Lucy Bryant. Both completed their A levels in Art and Textiles at the Horsham sixth form college and went on to Bath Spa, one of the top institutions in its field, to study Fashion Design. Both students have performed brilliantly at the next level and graduate this summer. Ella said:“After leaving college with 3 A levels in Art and an AS in Life Drawing I felt confident to enter the realms of university to study Fashion Design at Bath Spa. “My time and tuition at Collyer’s gave me the drive and ambition to succeed.” Assistant Principal Melanie Russell said: “Well done to Ella and Lucy, who are hugely talented ex-students. I’m delighted that they plan to join our new alumni site and post some images from their successful fashion show.”
Ella has just been given the exciting news that she was successful at interview with Beyond Creative Ltd and will start work in its London offices in the design department. Ella said: “Following the completion of my three year degree and exhibition at London graduate fashion week I am looking forward to starting my career with Beyond Creative. I am so grateful to Collyer’s for all that they have done to support my journey into the working world and will of course return as Alumni. In doing so I hope to pass on my experiences to future students to continue to help inspire learners and facilitate the passion at Collyer’s for Art and design at A Level. Vice Principal Steve Nicholls said: “We have an outstanding reputation on the national stage for art and we were thrilled to hear about Ella and Lucy’s success story. “Collyer’s and Horsham should be very proud of them indeed. “ Pictured are Ella and Lucy and one of the creations.

Youngsters beat personal challenges to win Duke award Super heroes come to town Award winners
Young people with learning difficulties have overcome personal challenges to achieve Duke of Edinburgh awards. They were presented with their certificates at a special ceremony at The Horsham Youth Hub, in Hurst Road. All of the young people are members of M8s, which is a Horshambased group for young people with
learning difficulties or additional needs. To achieve their award they each completed different sections of the programme which include volunteering, physical, skills and expedition. One of the award winners, Andy Fuller, 21, from Southwater, has just completed a supported internship at Brinsbury College and
Rop es, Sw ings and C lim bin g Thi ngs
believes the awards scheme has helped him gain part-time work as a tree surgeon. Andy said: “I’ve met different people and built friendships through the award plus different skills for the future, like communication and team work.” The option of taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme is just one of the activities on offer at M8s. The group currently gathers weekly to socialise and take part in cooking, arts and crafts, computer games and sports. The award is an opportunity for members to gain a national accreditation, recognised within higher education and by employers. The group focused on employment and life skills, including digital lifestyle, problem solving and current affairs. Award recipient Jennie, 16, from Southwater, said: “I completed Bronze at school but Duke of Edinburgh award at M8s is more relaxed as you’re with friends in a youth centre. I’ve met lots of new friendly people here.” Jennie’s carer Andrew Barker has also noticed an increase in her confidence. He said: “She’s more independent and goes out on her own now.” Supported by the Young People’s Service, there are 58 centres in West Sussex which are delivering the award to 9,271 participants.
These are from schools, colleges, special schools, Open Award Centres and independent organisations. The award is open to all young people in West Sussex aged 13 to 25. Patrick Burgess OBE, Deputy Lieutenant and Chairman of the West Sussex DofE County Committee, who presented the awards, said: “The momentum here is incredible. We are all uplifted by the energy. They are all amazing as individuals and together as a group.” Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “Taking part in the scheme takes a lot of dedication and determination as the challenges push young people to develop new skills. “These 20 young people are quite inspirational as they have had to overcome more than most. “Team work, co-operation, awareness of others and selfawareness have all played an important role in their achievement and I look forward to hearing from them in the future as the scheme gives them the push to do bigger and more challenging things.” To find out more about taking part in West Sussex, email d.of.e.award.youth@westsussex. gov.uk, or contact a school, college, youth group or one of the five Open Centres in the county.
Continued from front page Horsham’s super heroes came to town with a mission to raise money to help families who struggle. The charity fun runners took on 500 metre or 1.5 kilometre distances at Horsham Park in a colourful variety of costumes and characters, some jogging, others walking and the smallest toddling along with parents. Medals and certificates were awarded to those taking part in Saturday’s two and a half hour sponsored event, which raised money for the HomeStart charity in the Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex area. The event, which drew a good crowd, was supported by the Horsham Park Run group, Super Hero Parties, Gobsmack Comics and TaylorMade Uniforms. Home-Start Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex , known as CHAMS, offers friendship and support to local families with a child under five. It is an independent registered charity that supports families in dealing with issues such as isolation, neglect, financial hardship, illness, disability, bereavement or multiple births.

Fletcher’s low-sugar logo brings sweet success Fletcher receives his prizes from Christine Field and Peter Holman, Chartwells Head of Operations for the South Coast.
“At home the whole family have now cut down on the amount of puddings we eat and we are eating more fresh fruits instead. It really made us think and I hope other families might do the same when they see the logo.” The youngster beat off competition from more than 70 other entries across the county. At home the whole family have now cut down on the amount of puddings we eat and we are eating more fresh fruits instead
Fletcher Newell, nine, is the proud winner of a county-wide contest to combat the threat of excessive sugar. The message that Fletcher portrayed was hammered home in his eye-catching winning logo in a primary schools competition. Fletcher, a pupil at Storrington First School, featured a handdrawn chef and the message ‘Chef says eat less sugar’. West Sussex County Council’s Public Health and County Catering
teams ran the competition and the winning logo will now be used in West Sussex County Council’s sugar reduction campaigns and awareness raising messages. Fletcher said: “It was good fun taking part and it was really good to win. I started with four ideas and tried them all. My mum thought this was the best one as it had a chef on it and was asking people to eat less sugar in a way that was not frightening them but still made them listen.
Right Stay Bright’ workshop for his school, provided by the school meals provider Chartwells. Christine Field, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, who presented Fletcher with his prize, said: “Congratulations Fletcher. The winning design is simple but really effective. We hope it will help in promoting sugar reduction to both young people and adults.” West Sussex is a sugar reduction champion. This work has included cutting the amount of sugar in primary school meals by half a kilo over the course of a year.

Fly tippers fear as dumps reduce opening hours
Concern by residents about an increase in fly tipping has prompted the appointment of extra staff to combat the problem. Some household waste recycling centres will cut opening hours in changes approved to West Sussex’s 11 sites from October 1. Among them, The Hop Oast site at Horsham will close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the Billingshurst site on Thursdays and Fridays. Residents in the county said they feared the changes could prompt people to illegally fly tip rubbish. The changes are to be made following feedback from 4,899 residents who took part in a four week public consultation, the comments of the Inter Authority Waste Group, district and
borough and parish councils and the Environmental and Community Services Select Committee. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Our Household Waste Recycling Sites will continue to be extremely well run and will still provide an effective, but more efficient, service. “Following concerns about these changes to fly-tipping levels, we are creating an enforcement team of two extra officers to support the work currently done by our partners in district and borough councils. We will also work with the Farmers Union and private landowners to ensure fly-tipping is prevented as much as possible. “Fly-tipping remains an illegal activity and we will support, advise and provide a clear direction for reporting any incidents of fly-tipping.” The changes are • Opening at all sites 10am to 7pm five days a week in summer and 10am to 5pm in winter • the number of days eight of the Household Waste Recycling Sites open each week , but all will be open weekends, excluding three sites, Crawley, Burgess Hill and Westhampnett that are required to operate alongside Waste Transfer Stations which remain open 7 days a week. • Midhurst open Sundays, subject to planning permission) • Charges for the disposal of non-household waste i.e. soil, hard-core, DIY, plasterboard of £4 a bag/sheet (a standard rubble sack of 45l /20-25 kg) • Charges of £4 for car and vans tyres. • Refusal to accept LGV, tractor and mobile plant tyres. • Make changes to the Mobile Household Waste Recycling Service – most of the Chichester District Council mobile HWRSs will close, but Selsey and The Witterings will offer waste and recycling services on a fortnightly basis Mr Barling said: “As a council we have to make savings, due to a shortfall in Government funding, and this decision is the best option we have to make the £2 million a year savings needed. “We are not closing any sites and are keeping them open at weekends, which our public consultation shows West Sussex residents wanted.”

Warm welcome for visitors
Lip biter gets four and half years jail A man who bit off the lip of another man in a late night fight has been jailed for four and a half years. Patrick Doran, 25, unemployed, of West Chiltington Lane, Billingshurst, was involved in a fight between two groups of people near the junction of New Steine and Marine Parade in Brighton at about 12.15am on August 30 last year, police reported. A court heard that during the incident, Doran was seen to be holding his 45-year-old victim’s head with both hands and biting his bottom lip. The man later required surgery at Eastbourne District General Hospital for his injuries. Doran has appeared at Chichester Crown Court for sentencing, where he received six years’ imprisonment, reduced to four-and-a-half years for an early guilty plea to the

Waging war on weeds Weed wars
of riverbanks. Elaine Wain, a volunteer from UK Power Networks, said: “It grows quickly on the woodland floor and takes over so other plants can’t grow. It can be difficult to spot and we went through nettles to find it, but it’s easy to pull the roots out. We left it in piles to rot away. It was good fun and there was great teamwork spending time with people I don’t normally work with. It’s a lovely spot which is ideal for pond dipping and bird
spotting so it was satisfying to work on a conservation project in my local community, as I live near there.” UK Power Networks delivers electricity supplies across the South East and encourages all its employees to spend two paid days annually volunteering in their local community. As a result, last year, staff spent nearly 5,000 volunteering hours working with local charities and conservation groups, making 2015 the firm’s biggest year of volunteering. The group teamed up with regular conservation volunteers from Horsham Green Gym for the challenge at Gorringes Brook. Ryan Allison, volunteer support at Horsham District Council, said: “It’s always great to have groups out working in the countryside with us. The more helping hands we get the more projects we can undertake to improve the habitats around Horsham. I think it’s important for people to spend time caring for and enjoying their local countryside.” Horsham Green Gym meets from 10am to 1pm each Tuesday and Thursday for conservation work at sites around Horsham. To get involved visit www.horshamgreengym.org.uk. Anyone interested in volunteering outside of these times can contact Ryan via parks@ horsham.gov.uk.
BHS staff get August 3 closure date
All 27 staff at British Homes Stores in Horsham will lose their jobs with the company when the store closes on Wednesday. The company’s receivers have confirmed the August 3 closure date, which also applies to its Crawley shop that employs 37 people. Moves are being made to see if there are any local shop or store vacancies for staff losing their BHS jobs. In total throughout all the firm’s stores about 11,000 jobs will be lost. The announcement comes after the firm went into administration in April. The company had already begun the process of shutting
some stores after attempts to find a buyer came to nothing. The company said earlier this week it would close all its 163 shops. The Smithfield Group, which is handles the public relations for receivers Duff and Phelps, confirmed the August 3 closure dates of the two local stores to the Post. A spokesman said: “The staff are under consultation, and no redundancy notices have been issued at this point. We are going to liaise with the local Jobcentre to see if we can find any local retail vacancies. There is activity to help BHS staff find jobs.” The Horsham store employs 27 staff and Crawley 37..

Volunteers have waged war on an invasive weed plaguing woods and rivers in Warnham. A group of 14 staff from UK Power Networks’ income management team donned “wellies” and waders for a day pulling out Himalayan balsam at Warnham Nature Reserve. The weed grows fast and can reach over 6ft-tall in a few months, shading out native plants. Experts say this damages the biodiversity of rivers and causes rapid erosion

Policing team gets new car Horsham’s Neighbourhood Policing Team has a new Ford Fiesta thanks to a link-up between Swan Walk shopping Centre and Lifestyle Ford. The red car has been provided for the team to use in the Horsham district, with sponsorship agreed for the next three years. Sergeant Martin Drabble from the Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Being able to access the communities within our district is vital and the partnership we have with Swan Walk and Lifestyle Ford enables us to do this.” Swan Walk manager Gill Buchanan said: “Working locally with Sussex Police has always been a priority for us all at Swan
Walk and to be able to have just agreed another three-year car sponsorship is really exciting. “Our partnership with Lifestyle Ford shows the value of businesses working together and we know how much having a funded car means to the Neighbourhood Policing team.” James Maciejewski, sales manager at Lifestyle Ford in Horsham, said: “I am delighted to be able to continue supporting the Horsham Neighbourhood Policing Team in partnership with Swan Walk Shopping Centre. “I’m sure the Ford Fiesta will prove to be of value when assisting the team with its day-today duties.”

Fancy a challenge to help kids? Do you fancy a challenge? Do you want to make a difference? Then the Arundel to Brighton Walk is for you. It has raised more than £37,000 over three years and helped more than 500 families providing a specialist service for children with Cerebral Palsy and other motor learning difficulties. This year, the charity is looking for more walkers to make it bigger and better than ever and join the charity in celebrating Dame Vera Lynn’s centenary year. Known as the original forces sweetheart, she turns 100 years young on the 20th March 2017. Starting from the beautiful Arundel Castle on September 17 , with two walk distances available of 12km , taking two to three hours or 35km, taking eight to nine hours, you can choose what would be suitable for you and still enjoy the views and scenery. Catherine Bristow, Events Fundraiser commented “It is such an amazing atmosphere on the day, everyone is invited to take part, regardless of ability. Many people use the event as a team building exercise. This year, we have a fantastic group of people from Stay Safe Driving School already signed up. “Stay Safe encourages earlier development of better driving skills and attitudes for tomorrow’s
drivers and Steve Lintott the owner is really behind the charity. Steve is also a fire fighter so every day he puts his own life on the line and yet still manages to run a business to help children of the next generation and be very much involved in raising money for our charity. He truly is an inspiration.” Pied A Terre Adventures is help-
ing to organise the event. There will be regular refreshment stops, plenty of encouragement along the way and a hot meal for all on completion of the 35k. To sign up (£35 for adults and £10 for under 16’s accompanied by an adult), please visit www.dvlcc. org.uk or call Catherine Bristow, Events Fundraiser on 01403 780444

Verdict awaited after youngsters Appeal after Henfield highlight Storrington in Bloom man reported missing As Storrington awaits the results of its South East in Bloom entry it can reflect on the communal effort put in by people of all ages. This month has been judging time after public-spirited volunteers have been busy all year sprucing up the village, including “clean-ups”. Heralding the arrival of judges have been flags designed by the students at Rydon Community College, the brightly coloured mural
celebrating the Queen’s 90 th birthday painted by children at Storrington First School and the 10 ‘bright and beautiful’ themed wheelbarrows prepared and planted by local youth groups. Organisers say they are looking forward to announcing the winners at an awards ceremony in September. Pictured are the efforts of the youngsters.
David Payne- reported missing
Concern about the welfare of a missing man from Henfield led to a public appeal for information. At the time the police statement was released last week David Payne, 57 had last been seen by his sister on July 15 but he was not reported missing to police until July 20. He was described as white, 5’9”, of medium to stocky build, clean shaven and with receding straight white hair. It was thought he might be wearing a blue shirt bearing a BikeMend logo, reflecting his job as a cycle repairer, together
with dark blue combat-style trousers. His silver Ford Fusion car had been located in the Eastbourne area but his yellow Nomad bicycle had not. Mr Payne was said to be a keen cyclist and used to long-distance rides. Anyone who had seen David or had any knowledge about his whereabouts was asked to e mail 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 1883 of 20/07. At the time of the District Post going to press no further reports of his whereabouts had been received.

Just Capitol as kids give great show Superheroes sought to
drop in for charity
A collage of the action Year 6 children from The Southwater Junior Academy at Southwater and their parents have some great memories as their summer break continues. They once again took over the Capitol Theatre for a production, this time to perform the pantomime ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella.’
Performing to a packed house on each night, the children had the audience clapping along to catchy songs, laughing out loud at a host of rollicking jokes, and of course, booing and hissing at the baddies. With an abundance of sparkle and shine, every child was a star, performing as they all did with energy and enthusiasm.

The show was directed by Sarah Esser, who managed to bring out the very best in every child. With Rob Cooper adding his talent on the piano and academy staff working tirelessly behind the scenes, this year’s production was called an absolute triumph.
Superheroes are sought for a charity abseil. The fund-raiser for St Catherine’s Hospice is calling on people to make the 100ft descent. After the success of its first abseil last year, St Catherine’s is returning with its breathtaking challenge on the outside of the Sandman Signature hotel in Crawley. The thrilling abseil is taking place across two days on October 7 and 8 and falls during National Hospice Care Week, which aims to raise the profile of and celebrate the work of local hospices across the UK. The October 7 date is primarily a
chance for local businesses to challenge themselves in aid of their local hospice, while the October 8 abseil is open to everyone in the community. The hospice says: “One thing’s for certain though, whether you choose to descend with friends or work colleagues or abseil as a personal challenge, you won’t regret your decision when you reach the top of the Sandman Signature Hotel and see the sensational views.” Last year, Robin Lord, who works as Digital Marketing and Communications Executive at St Catherine’s, took the plunge. He said: “The abseil was an experience I’ll never forget. It was great to take on a personal challenge whilst helping to support terminally ill local people. I’d definitely recommend people take the chance to do something different this October and become a St Catherine’s superhero abseiler!” Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s organises the challenge. She said: “Our superhero abseil is a great chance to complete a personal goal or conquer a fear. Your bravery will help make sure we can continue to be there to care for local people and their family and friends when they need us most.” The registration fee is £20 if registering before August 31and using the discount code ABSEILFLYER. Those registering on behalf of a business use the discount code ABSEILCORPORATE. To take part, people will be asked to commit to raising a minimum sponsorship of £200, which is enough to fund a patient visiting St Catherine’s Day Hospice for a day to benefit from wellbeing activities. People will also be entered into the best dressed superhero competition for free. Stylish romp through the musicals Students ran through the musical song-book in style before a captivated audience. Farlington School students from Year 6 to Upper Sixth entertained friends, family and staff with a selection of scenes from much -loved musicals. The evening was directed by the Horsham school’s Jane and David Thomas, with choreography by Lucy Cooper and Natalie van de Braam and sound by Brian Dallimore. The school said: “Magic is a word that is used far too often to apply to events that are good but not genuinely magical. Farlington’s “Magic of the Musicals” was honestly, truly and quite genuinely, magical. “ The audience was taken on a time-travelling tour through music, song and dance, beginning with the exhilarating tap-dancing beat of “42 nd Street” which opened the show with dazzle, glamour and pathos. Then the younger members of the school charmed with a medley from “The Lion King” before New York and the raw dancing and pow-
erful drama of “West Side Story”. The second half took us to 30’s Berlin, where the beguiling Emcee welcomed us to a pulsating “Cabaret” in his decadent Kit Kat Klub; then it was off to Oxford, where “The Bluestocking” successfully mixed humour with catchy 20’s-style music against a

Museum shortlisted for Family Friendly Award
The Weald & Downland Museum in Singleton, near Chichester, is delighted to have been shortlisted for the Family Friendly Museum Award – the biggest museum award in Britain and the only one
where children and families pick the winners. This year’s shortlist is comprised of ten attractions: Egypt Centre Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (Swansea), Hampton Court Palace
(Greater London), Manchester Art Gallery, National Glass Centre (Sunderland), The Novium Museum (Chichester), River & Rowing Museum (Henley-on-Thames), Towner Art Gallery (Eastbourne),
Weald & Downland Open Air Museum (West Sussex), Wrexham County Borough Museum and York Art Gallery. On Weald & Downland’s shortlisting, Emily Beckwith, Kids in Museums young volunteer and shortlisting panel member, commented: “The organisation came across as forward thinking, trying to find new ways to engage with families and children.” Martin Purslow, Museum CEO, said: “Our team is proud that our museum has been shortlisted for such a fantastic award. We often meet people from across the UK, who remember, with fondness, visiting when they were children and hold the museum as a very special place as a result. We always pride ourselves on being a fun space for families, and our staff and volunteers go above and beyond to give visitors of all ages a wonderful day out. It gives me great pleasure to see families of all kinds enjoying this unique Museum together and it is my hope that their children and grandchildren will, in turn, bring their own families to visit us.” Dan Snow, historian, broadcaster and Kids in Museums Patron, praised museums who work hard to include all ages: “Great to see so many museums, big and small, contemporary galleries and collections of Iron Age artefacts, making a huge effort to welcome and
include children and families. Museums celebrate what we have in common, and help us understand our differences. It couldn’t be more important for young people and communities to be able to access the shared stories and dreams that our best family friendly museums can help tell. When museums get it right for future generations, they get it right for all of us. This award celebrates that.” Dea Birkett, Creative Director of Kids in Museums who run the Award, said: “It’s great to see the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum on the shortlist, for the first time, and so praised and supported by families and children. It’s a very special place that is committed to putting young people and families at its heart, and encouraging new visitors. We wish the museum best of luck when the undercover family judges arrive!” Each shortlisted museum will be road-tested anonymously by families, over the summer, using the Kids in Museums Manifesto as a guide to their family and child friendliness. The Family Friendly Museum Award is kindly supported by Philip Mould Gallery and Association of Leading Visitor Attractions. It wouldn’t happen without them. The winner will be announced at an award ceremony at the Wallace Collection, London, on October 17.

Following the dream
Revealed
Interview with The Executioner As with most things mediaeval, crime and punishment were a grim affair. Murderers were given the same trials as apple thieves and both usually met the same grizzly end. Mediaeval life was a terrifying one. But nothing brings that reality to light, more than the gruesome and frightening apparition that is the Executioner. Dressed in all black, wielding an axe or scythe, this fearsome arbiter of the law was once all that stood between the good folk of the realm and the gallows. Gilbert Savage the Executioner is resplendent in black, and is always equipped with his ‘heading axe’, block, ropes, knives, and the other ‘tools’ of his gruesome trade. During these turbulent times in our nation’s history the nature of crime and punishment included hanging, mutilation, and decapitation! The ‘Executioner’, that very necessary public ‘functionary’ would, at the direction of Court and Crown, brand, flog, hang, disembowel, behead and mutilate offenders, from the low born to the very highest in the land; for their ‘crimes’ – crimes against property, crimes against individuals, and crimes against the very Crown itself, ……….all in the pursuit of justice!
How did you get into being an executioner? The executioner is not a popular person. I would have been drawn from the lower level of society, with the skills of a butcher!
What is the strangest service you have had to provide? The strangest service?.......all the things I do are ‘strange’......I flogg, brand, burn, behead, disembowel .....as is required by the law.......I offer the full range of services!!!
Do you have to be brave to be an executioner? No, you don’t need to be brave, just have a strong stomach and the ability to totally disregard the sufferings of others......and their pleas.
Where do you buy the tools of your trade? All my tools are made by local blacksmiths.
How long does it to take to train as an executioner?
Youngsters from the Horsham area have been busy rehearsing for their Summer School production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Youth Group Production at The Capitol. Retelling the Biblical story of Joseph and the coat of many colours, this magical musical, the UK’s longest running, is full of unforgettable songs including Those Canaan Days, Any Dream with Do and Close Every Door To Me.
There is no formal training......I would have seen lots of executions. And may gave served a form of apprenticeship with a form experienced executioner but really, you learn on the job.
What did you practice on? Practice!......on people!!!.......I could have honed by axe stroke on vegetables.......cutting through a cabbage feels and sounds like a neck!!!
What does the phrase ‘to be kissed by the Devil’ mean? To be branded on the face as a thief, for stealing
What does it mean if you are ‘earmarked’? You would have your ear nailed to the pillory
Nick Mowat, General Manager at The Capitol, said: “We have an important role to play in the future of our local young people and I’m extremely proud of the fact that we not only offer the Summer School each year for this purpose but also the Pantomime at Christmas and Chichester Festival Youth Theatre in between. It is so important that we offer young people opportunities to learn, grow in confidence and develop skills and their personalities in a
friendly and safe environment.” The two weeks of rehearsals culminate in performances on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th August at 2.30pm and 7pm. Tickets costing £14 (concessions £9 / Friends £12) are available from The Capitol Box Office on 01403 750220 or online at www.thecapitolhorsham.com . This amateur youth production is by arrangement with The Really Useful Group Ltd and is supported by the District Post.

Still time to catch the dinosaurs Horshamosaurus by John Sibbick
An exhibition on Dinosaurs of Horsham runs until September 5 at the town’s museum. The museum said: “176 years ago, there was a keen amateur dinosaur hunter who, looking over lumps of stone waiting to be cut to build a new chapel for Horsham, saw a dark mass amongst greyish brown rock. Little did George Bax Holmes realise that this discovery would catapult him in to the world of The Great Exhibition of 1851 and Central Park, New York, or inspire video artist Toby Tatum 170 years later. 30 years ago a keen amateur fossil hunter looked at a mass of grey clay and saw lumps of dark stone. Sylvia Standing rescued the material before it was to be made into bricks. Little did she realise that after 30 years of research the world’s leading dinosaur artist John Sibbick would recreate from those few fragments Horshamosaurus Rudgwickensis , a dinosaur named after her home town and that of George Bax Homes. Both fascinating stories and resultant art work along with fossils remains are told and featured in the new temporary exhibition Dinosaurs of Horsham, providing art, reality and fun. Horsham, a town that has an ancient seabed as its roofing material, is built on dinosaurs, for Horsham stone and clay are rich in fossil remains. For centuries these fossils were thrown away and discarded; however, the dying days of the Georgian period and the early days of Victoria’s reign led to discoveries and understanding of what these lumps of dark stone actually were and in turn led to ‘dino-mania’. In Horsham, respected Quaker George Bax Holmes became interested in such fossils and geology. Around 1837 he seems to have collected his first fossil, then three years later he found further remains amongst the building material for a new chapel in the town: it became known as the Great Horsham Iguanodon. Thanks to the loan by Brighton and Hove City
Council’s Booth museum, Horsham museum will be able to display some of these amazing fossils. The size of them, along with a misunderstanding of scale meant that the remains became the model for a replica that stunned the world: it was unveiled at the world’s first theme park, Crystal Palace, after the Great Exhibition, then later Sydenham Park, where it still stands today. In the early 1980s, Horsham museum volunteer Sylvia Standing led a small group to Rudgwick to rescue some fossils found in brick clay. The remains caught the eye of polymath Dr William Blows, who, in his spare time has spent years researching dinosaurs called Polacanthus. The fossils found at Rudgwick looked similar, but were different, and after further research they were named a new species called Horshamosaurus. In the Victorian era they transformed fossils into 3D sculptures. For Horshamosaurus, the Friends of Horsham Museum have commissioned the world’s leading dinosaur artist, John Sibbick, to re-create the dinosaur so that we can see what it looked like. As well as displaying remains, the exhibition Dinosaurs of Horsham also showcases the work of Reading born video artist Toby Tatum, who has produced a short film Monsters. It features Horsham’s Iguanodon along with the other dinosaur sculptures in the park. Toby has exhibited the film around the world at various film festivals and now thanks to the support of Toovey’s Fine Art Valuers and Auctioneers the Museum is delighted to be able to show it in Horsham. It is the first time that video art has been shown in the museum and adds a different dimension to what will be an amazing multilayered exhibition which tells the story of dinosaur discoveries and artistic interpretations. The museum is also delighted to be able to display Dinographica Britannica, a new work by French artist Adrien Sina who on New Year’s day 2016 visited Sydenham
Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com
Park, and captured the spirit of these amazing Victorian creations including the Great Horsham Iguanodon by skilfully blending these photographic images with those found in Sir Richard Owen’s History of British Fossil reptiles. It adds an amazing views to an exhibition that reflects the Victorian passion for the modern technology looking at the past. A range of dinosaur summer fun sessions will complement the exhibition and a children’s dinosaur themed trail around the museum will help keep the children entertained during the school holidays. Dinosaurs of Horsham - art, reality and fun opens on 9 July and runs until 5 September 2016. The exhibition is multi-layered with elements that will appeal to all those interested in dinosaurs, art, scientific history, Victorian skulduggery and a lot more besides. This amazing exhibition would not have been possible without the support of the Washington based auctioneers and valuers Toovey’s.”Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm. The campaign, which sees the Connells team utilise all their expertise and knowledge of the local housing market, has previously enjoyed huge success, helping many sellers secure a buyer in less than six weeks. “There are many reasons why people want to sell their homes as quickly as possible,” says Adam Heraty, Branch Manager for Connells. “For many, it’s down to personal circumstances such as relocating for work, while some have set their sights on a dream home and need to secure a sale on their current property before putting in an offer. “Whatever the reason, Connells’ ‘Six Week Challenge’ is designed to help these individuals achieve a sale in a short time frame,” adds Adam. “We’ve run this campaign before with much success and this year, it looks better than ever. We have got lots of marketing activity planned to support it, including high profile window and branch displays, emails to registered buyers and mailers to raise awareness. Every property in the campaign will be highlighted on our website and we’ll be holding power phone outs in the branch to promote Six Week Challenge properties, so I would urge anyone wanting to move quickly to contact us at the branch and achieve winning results in just six weeks.” If you are thinking of selling your home and would like to be considered for Connells’ ‘Six Week Challenge’, please contact the local branch on 01403 256331 or email: horsham@connells. co.uk

Family fun day is a great success Pulborough’s fun day was a success
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC A quieter week for Pulborough Bowls Club began with a Brookes Motors League fixture at home to Chichester. Two triples played 18 ends of largely one sided bowls, with Pulborough pulling ahead
from half way. Skip, Alan Jordan, had a close game that could have gone either way, but 11 shots in the last 8 ends were enough to stop the opposition in its tracks to finish 21/14. Top rink went to John Brown, with lead, Julie Day and number 2, Chris Etherington, who again found
their stride on end 13 to finish with a flourish, 22 shots to 8 for an overall victory and 2 rink wins giving Pulborough the full 6 points. Worthing based Grasshoppers’ team of ex-police visited Pulborough for a 5 triples friendly. Three of the five games went Pulborough’s way, with top rink going to skip, Paul Day, with lead, Julie Day and Chris Etherington as number 2, the match finished as a 93/75 win for Pulborough. The second Family Fun Day at PBC took place last weekend with residents from all areas of the village and beyond invited to come along and try the game of bowls in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, with help from the members and coaching as required. Children were welcomed onto the green to play skittles, target bowls and junior bowls, with trophies being awarded to the most accomplished of the youngsters. Bacon rolls, nibbles and drinks were on offer to encourage everyone to spend their afternoon in good company out on the green and an extensive, local retailer sponsored raffle raised over £200 towards the roof for the new sun-room that will be constructed at the club in the autumn.

Ken Peters, Anita Colliety & Alan Readshaw won 19 - 12 Marion Clark, Ray Sutton & Geoff Weller won 22 - 16 Stan Morgan, Betty Weller & Alan Knight lost 15 - 20 Beryl Barraclough, Roy

Joggers race against the tide at Worthing Cottesmore member Geoff wins at Charity Open The Worthing Beat the Tide 10k
Golf Dave Snith - Sports Editor
On what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far, Cottesmore Veterans hosted their annual charity open competition with over 60 golfers taking part, half of which coming from other clubs across the south east. The club raised over £1,500 for their captain’s chosen charities, Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance and St Catherine’s Hospice, with the help of a number of prominent sponsors. There were a number of prizes awarded at the event with the Open Champion Trophy going to a Cottesmore member, Geoff Mitchell, with 40 stableford points. He was followed by the leading Cottesmore Veteran, Bob
Sparks, and the leading visitor, Alan Jobson from Broke Hill Golf Club. The event organisers, Alan Rengger and Paddy Dowzer (President), thanked all the sponsors and helpers for their assistance
The club raised over £1,500 for their captain’s chosen charities in making this one of the main events of the year. The Cottesmore Veterans Golf Society meets every Tuesday and this was one of a selection of competitions throughout the season.

Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers Horsham Joggers competed in two very contrasting races during mid-week. While eight runners took part in the Worthing Beat the Tide 10k run on the foreshore of the beach ten runners took place on an 8k in the splendid surroundings of Wakehurst Place. Fast improving Palmer unfortunate in his ‘best ever’ drive A good drive from Jolyon Palmer, but still no luck
Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer’ s luck once again failed him as he just missed out on his first ever Formula 1 points due to an unfortunate spin at the Hungarian Grand Prix while well positioned in tenth with all his scheduled pit stops taken. Even before the race Palmer was dogged with misfortune when on the Friday practice sessions his car was out of use most of the day due to a fuel pressure issue. In addition, Saturday’s qualifying was interrupted throughout the day by a number of huge heavy downpours.
Sport
got a story? email us at sport@thedistrictpost.co.uk
In what Palmer described as the ‘best drive of his career’ he started from position 17 on the grid, two places up from his team mate Kevin Magnussen, and rapidly moved up the order looking comfortable and in control. The unfortunate spin came as Palmer was looking to make inroads into the nine drivers in front of him but although he was able to rescue the spin he could not make up the lost position, eventually finishing twelfth. His team mate Magnussen also had a good race, finishing three places behind him after starting from nineteenth on the grid to complete what was the best all-round performance
from the Renault Sport Team. After the race Palmer said, “I’m gutted as my first points in Formula 1 were there for the taking. The car was good and I was driving well within myself in P10. I turned in the same as normal at turn four - I wasn’t hanging everything out and I was looking after the tyres - but for some reason I lost the car in a massive snap. I need to look at everything with my engineers to see if there is anything we could have done to prevent it. I was running tenth, we had completed all our pit stops, we had good pace relative to those ahead and behind so it looks like we’ve made a real step forward this weekend. It was the best drive of my career today and just one small spin took away those points. I’m gutted today but I’ll be fighting to get in the same position or better in Hockenheim.” Renault Sport Team Principal Fred Vasseur commented, “That was a strong race for us and illustrates the progress being made. Both drivers did a very good job, but Jolyon’s performance was particularly notable after missing most of Friday’s running.” Southwater based Palmer will be hoping that a bit of luck comes his way at this weekend’s German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring and he can grab a first elusive F1 point or two.

Slinfold Ladies reach the semi-finals Golf Dave Snith - Sports Editor Slinfold Ladies have reached the semi-finals of the InterClub Division Championship, a scratch matchplay competition organised by the Sussex County Ladies Golf Association. Slinfold’s Division 3 team – seven players each with handicaps of 21 and above – beat Haywards Heath in the quarterfinals played at Sweetwoods
Park Golf Club. The Slinfold division 3 team will now play against Crowborough Beacon in the semi-finals. Slinfold’s Division 2 team – seven players each with handicaps of 14 and above – followed suit and beat Bognor Regis at West Hove Golf Club and will now meet Brighton & Hove in the semi-finals. Both the semi-finals are to be played at Lewes Golf Club on August 5.
The Slinfold Ladies Division 2 team
Roffey eliminated in semi final upset Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Semi Final Roffey 158-7 (20 overs) Middleton 162-2 (18.1 overs) Middleton won by 8 wickets On paper a successful Premier League team would be expected to beat one of last year’s relegated sides but T20 cricket can be unpredictable and a top game from one good player can enable a lower side to overcome the odds. Roffey’s visit to Middleton – last year’s runner up in the competition - was potentially tricky as the hosts punch above their weight. They knocked out East Grinstead in the Quarter Final, are currently top of Division 1 pressing for promotion straight back into the Premier League, and their leading player, Sean Heather - formerly on Sussex’s books - is renowned for consistent quality performances. Put in to bat Roffey found it difficult to fully recover from 12-3 although Theo Rivers made 34 and Chris Webb got the highest score of
the match, his unbeaten 73 coming off 56 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes enabling Roffey to post a challenging 158. Heather had bowled frugally, taking 1-22 and much hinged on whether Roffey could dismiss him sufficiently early. Middleton replied briskly and was 90-2 after 10 overs with Roffey needing wickets urgently, but, further success eluded them. Patrick Colvin scored 38 and Ben Ferbache 35 not out, but it was opener Sean Heather who shepherded Middleton home with an unbeaten 67, victory coming with 11 balls unused. Roffey had hoped to play against Horsham in the final but are now left to concentrate on their push for a hat trick of Premier League titles, skipper Matt Davies telling the District Post: “We got off to slow starts with both bat and ball and so were chasing the game a bit. But, after Webby batted very well and others chipped in we posted a defendable score but when they pulled away we couldn’t quite rein them in. Fair play to Middleton, they’re a Premier League side really. Now we’ve got some huge league games coming up!”
Chris Webb’s 73 not out was not enough for a Roffey victory Horse Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter So prolific is local jockey Ryan Moore that every year is a good one but even by his exceptionally high standards, 2016 is of special vintage. Adding to the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, Moore has just triumphed again - at Ascot, in the prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a race he previously won on Conduit in 2009. Moore romped home on 13-8 favourite Highland Reel – after previously winning the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the same venue, little
wonder that Moore has been champion jockey three times. In the King George Moore quickly made his intentions clear, taking a prominent lead down the back straight and although the pack narrowed the gap Highland Reel stormed through to win by a length and a quarter ahead of Wings of Desire. Like Moore, Highland Reel is no stranger to winning major races abroad. Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien, himself a onetime amateur champion jockey, has had four King George triumphs and a long list of group 1 winners, Moore saying: “Highland Reel is very good – he’s very strong and knows how to race and won in America and Hong
Kong. It’s a marvellous achievement from Aiden to get him back in shape to win this sort of race.” O’Brien adding: “The horse has pace and has been progressing all the time – he travels the world and he’s getting better and Ryan gave him a beautiful ride.” Other plaudits for 32 year old Brighton born Moore included “a front running master class”, “commanding” and “perfection.” Ryan Moore’s racing pedigree is impeccable – his father Gary (whose own father was a trainer) trains at Cisswood Stables and Ryan’s brothers Jamie and Joshua are jump jockeys, while his sister Hayley is a top amateur rider.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham booked their day at the Sussex T20 Cup Final after clinching a thrilling victory when all
had seemed lost despite Brighton having to chase down a very demanding 174. Horsham won the toss and showed positive intent by batting first, openers Craig Gallagher making 38 and Tom Johnson 37. When they were parted 82 was on the board at the half way stage of the innings, Michael Thornely going on to score a 36 ball 51 before Tom Haines and James Johnson helped Horsham to post 173-4. When Brighton replied Michael Thornely and David Croshaw each took two wickets and at 50-4 the run rate had risen beyond ten an over, and subsequently exceeded 14 with Horsham seemingly cruising to an inevitable win. Brighton, though pressed on, Alasdair Wilson’s 56 keeping them in contention along with Curtis Ford, former Assistant Groundsman at Horsham, and, especially Simon Hetherton, whose 10 ball 30, included 4 maximums, so nearly snatching victory from Horsham’s grasp. But in a dramatic last over a run out and three Jonny Whiting wickets, culminating with a Michael Munday catch sealed Horsham’s win when three runs had been required from the final ball. After finishing with 4-31 Whiting told the District Post: “Hetherton had hit me for 3 sixes in a row in my previous over and I thought we’d blown it, so it was great to run out winners!” In the 34 year history of the cup Horsham have won it on a record 12 occasions (lastly in 2013) – seven times more than their nearest contender. The final is at the county ground Hove on Sunday August 21 when Horsham meet Middleton, last year’s runner up.

Billingshurst set off like a train and posted by far their highest total of the campaign only for Rohit Jagota to capitalise on one of groundsman Drew Smallwood’s belting pitches, enabling Roffey to leapfrog Horsham and Cuckfield into top spot. Stuart Barber, free of the cares of captaincy, compiled an excellent 87, putting on 77 for the first wicket with Tom Haynes
(27), then Thivanka Rataratne bludgeoned a typically forthright 54 and on 169-1, barely past the half way point of their allocation, a Billingshurst total in excess of 300 beckoned. But, Roffey then did what they so often do – applied the brakes, only wicket keeper Mike Burroughs making much further impact with an unbeaten 44 run cameo, Luke Barnard taking 3-72 and George Fleming and Jagota two wickets each. Although the 265 run target in 52 overs was competitive, especially in the face of Billingshurst’s opening attack of Andy Barr and Abidine Sakande (who recently played for Sussex against Pakistan), Roffey’s

Horsham edged from top spot after gritty draw Sussex Premier League Cuckfield 250-8 declared (57.1 overs) Horsham 195-8 (52 overs) Match drawn Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham toughed out a battling draw in this top of the table clash after Cuckfield had posted a demanding 250-8 on a turning wicket. On the previous Saturday Cuckfield’s overseas Aussie, 24 year old Jordan Silk scored 174 against Brighton & Hove and in the Horsham match he ran up 126 (one fewer than his highest first class score for Tasmania). Silk’s outstanding innings at little more than a run a ball was the major difference between the two sides, the next highest Cuckfield contribution being 28, Michael Munday taking 4-74 from 21.1 overs and Tom Johnson 3-34, assisted by David Croshaw’s excellent boundary catch. Horsham responded brightly with a 77 run opening stand, Joe Ludlow going on to
make 76 and Craig Gallagher 47, but determined rearguard action was required to keep Cuckfield at bay after the middle and lower order ebbed away leaving Horsham on a potentially perilous 163-7. Tom Johnson was stumped in the last over but his 32 off 35 balls saved the day in the face of Josh Hayward’s 4-60 after his 5 wickets the week before. Horsham Captain James Johnson told the District Post: “Silk is an exceptional bat, enabling Cuckfield to set a challenging score on a Bunsen burner (real turner), especially as they had two spinners to our one.” Prior to the Cuckfield game Horsham were top with 251 points, Cuckfield second with 236 and Roffey third on 233, but now Roffey, with a game in hand, have sneaked into the lead with 261, one ahead of Horsham and 11 more than Cuckfield. Tomorrow (Saturday July 30) Horsham return home to take on sixth placed Bexhill, whom they beat comprehensively on the coast in May after bowling them out for a paltry 93.

strong batting line up ensured that a positive challenge would be mounted. However at 84-3, including 40 from Theo Rivers, much still needed to be done and two more quick wickets might well have altered the course of the game, but Usman Khan and Jagota had other ideas, setting about the bowling with gusto. Usman’s 57 included 5 sixes and on his departure Josh Fleming provided the perfect foil to Jagota’s trademark belligerence. Needing a maximum to complete his 74 ball hundred, Rohit duly obliged finishing off the match in style with six wickets and 8.5 overs to spare. 533 runs were scored in the afternoon with 54 fours and,
involving much ball hunting, 22 sixes - Billingshurst skipper Ben Williams saying: “After our good start we should have got more runs but we felt we’d got a par score.” Rohit Jagota told us: “The pitch was absolutely superb and both sides batted very well. Usman set up the win with me and then Josh (Fleming) provided great support!” Roffey move one point ahead of Horsham with a game in hand. Tomorrow (Saturday July 30) Roffey, keen to reverse heavy defeats on their last two encounters, visit fourth placed East Grinstead, while Billingshurst second from bottom host Brighton & Hove (whom they trail by 27 points) in a must win game.
