Family of six Loses home in House fire A family of six was made homeless when fire severley damaged their house.

Damage to the end of terrace house in The Alders, Billingshurst, was so severe that earlier this week investigators were unable to examine the area where they think the blaze might have started.

The family rents the house from the Horsham-based Saxon Weald Housing Association: A spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of the fire on the evening it occurred and liaised with Horsham District Council to secure emergency accommodation for the family. They currently remain in temporary housing. The property next door, which was also damaged by the fire, was empty at the time. The damage to number 55 is extensive but we are just very grateful that nobody was hurt.”

A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service told the Post on Wednesday: “Because of the structural

damage they cannot access safely the seat of the fire.

At the moment they cannot safely investigate.”

The blaze wrecked the roof

It took them three hours to get the fire under control and first floor and severely damaged the ground floor.

Crews from Horsham, Worthing, Storrington, Partridge Green, Crawley and Arundel responded after the first alert at 4.46 pm. It took them three hours to get the fire under control, and relief crews followed up their work, returning on Tuesday for more checks.

but firefighters managed to prevent more serious damage to the row of houses in the street.

The fire crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets, two hose reels, foam jets and two extension ladders as they fought the blaze. The fire was first reported to have started in the upper part of the house , and that is one area investigators will examine when it is safe to do so.

The fierce blaze attracted attention from local people and drew much sympathy as the scale of the damage caused by the flames and smoke became apparent.

Part of the area was sealed off as a safety measure as the crews fought the blaze, and later re-opened after fire crews were satisfied the blaze had been completely extinquished.

The blaze was one of the worst of its kind to happen the village in recent years.

Bumper crowds at second Super student remembers where it all started for her Loxwood Joust weekend Big crowds supported the second weekend of the Loxwood Joust.

Thousands watched the mediaeval mayhem on Saturday and Sunday to wrap the annual event.

Spectators got a glimpse of the passion and hardships of life in 1455 with full combat battles, breath- taking Jousting displays, tales of punishment and torture from the Mediaeval Executioner, fun and antics from Launcelot the Bald and timeless and beguiling music from the Mediaeval Baebes.

With a several events happening every half hour from 10am to 6pm, some of the previous weekend’s visitors, keen to see the shows, demonstrations and displays they did not get to on the first weekend, were seen to return again for the second weekend.

Spectator Julia Byrne, from Old Coulsdon said: “It was excellent. Fantastic. Children can find out about so many things and my daughter loved throwing the sponges at her dad in the stocks” Once again the Jousting Knights, Armoured Battles and Falconry Displays drew large audiences in the main arenas with both young and old enjoying the shows in the Children’s Kingdom with the Jester Devilstick Peat.

Launcelot the Bald was seen to juggle large knives whilst standing on a tight rope held in place tug-of- war style by unwitting volunteers and the witches looking for a third witch to complete their numbers, asked all lady visitors to ‘cackle’ to test their suitability for the role, with mixed success.

A “super-student” of social work has put her prize to good use.

Elaine Hall of Horsham won an award for ‘Outstanding Achievement’ on her BA Social Work degree course at the University of Sussex.

Instead of treating herself she has given the £100 award money she received to charity HomeStart CHAMS, where her journey to becoming a social worker began.

Home-Start CHAMS is a local family support charity that helps hundreds of vulnerable children each year. They work throughout Horsham, Crawley and Mid-Sussex, supporting families that are facing issues such as issues such as isolation, financial hardship, illness, or multiple births from the Crawley centre.

Elaine said her experience working for the charity helped her pursue a long held ambition.

She said: “My time at Home-Start really was a launch-pad for me.

I had worked with children and families for several years in a voluntary capacity before, but it was working as a HomeStart Co-ordinator that allowed me to build up my professional

and personal knowledge of working with young families.

That gave me the confidence to follow my dream of becoming a social worker.”

Specialising in working with children and families within her studies allowed Elaine to make the most of her Home-Start experience. “Some of the families I’d worked with at the charity were very vulnerable, some just needed an advocate and friend”, Elaine continued. “The range of issues I’d dealt with at HomeStart gave me an understanding of family dynamics and how circumstances can change so quickly. I’m sure that made a huge difference to how things went for me on the course.” The charity says it was delighted to be presented with the cheque when Elaine recently visited their offices. Elaine said: “Three years down the line, I am a qualified social worker and about to start work. “I will always be grateful to all the families I worked with through Home-Start, who taught me so much.”

Horsham’s Pokemon GO Tour It would have been hard to escape the hype surrounding the launch of Pokemon GO, but do you know what it is all about?

The game is a sensation and has swept the globe. Using a mobile phone app, together with GPS and an augmented reality function, players - or ‘trainers’ - search for, and capture, Pokemon characters.

These characters are then trained and evolved, and players come together at ‘gyms’ to battle one another’s monsters, to see who has the best, and gain the honour of owning the gym – that is, until another competitor beats them!

HACKHORSHAM has partnered with Horsham District Council, Visit Horsham and the Horsham PokemonGo Group, to take the game to a new level. Together, they have devised a free trail, to bring people together by playing the game whilst exploring Horsham town. To attract extra Pokemon characters and allow players to progress, HACKHORSHAM will place in game lures at selected ‘Pokestops’ around the town, at timed intervals from 11:00am this Saturday (August 20), culminating with a battle royale at one of the

town gyms.

Whether you are a Pokemon master or newbie, you are invited to take part. Simply come along to the Info Stall in the market, where a special map will indicate the

next Pokestop to get a lure. You can dip in and out of the trail and spend as long as you like doing it.

So make your way to the market, find out where to go, be part of the spectacle and join in the fun!

Knife robbery victim warns passers-by Early morning walkers might hold the key to a knifepoint robbery in Horsham Park.

The shocked victim remained aware enough to warn people not to approach his attacker.

And police are hoping that someone in the area might come forward to help their inquiries.

A suspect awaits further questioning on the reported incident after initially being interviewed by police.

Police have been told the 53-year-old victim was walking through the park about 8.45am when he was approached by a man who produced a knife and demanded money. The threatened man handed over some money and the robber then made him throw away his mobile phones and also put his watch on the ground.

Sussex Police has issue a public appeal for help in investigating the incident.

Detectives would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the robbery on Tuesday of last week and in particular anyone who spoke to the victim, who warned them not to go in the suspect’s direction as he left the park.

Sussex Police said in a statement : “A 21-year-old man from Horsham was arrested on suspicion of robbery and has been bailed until September 16.”

Although attacks in the park are relatively rare, there have been several serious incidents.

In January a foreign exchange student of 17 from Honk Kong was attacked and robbed by a gang of five people. Last August a young woman was raped in the park but managed to telephone for help.

Other incidents have included a racist attack on a 13-year-old British Asian and the jailing in

2012 of three men from Horsham for assault on a 29-year-old man who was stabbed with a bottle and kicked. That incident was seen live on CCTV by an operator.

Red car driver could hold clues to crash The driver of a red car might hold clues to a crash in which three people were seriously injured.

Police want to talk to the driver of a red car using the A264 Dorking Road at Horsham when a crash happened there last Friday evening.

The impact left a 21-yearold woman critically injured and two other people seriously hurt.

Police were called to the scene, about 800 metres east of the Great Daux roundabout and the A264 junction with the A24, at 6.51pm.

All the people involved in the crash came from addresses in Horsham.

Police said that a purple Ford Fiesta and a black Audi TT travelling west collided and the Fiesta was then also in collision with an eastbound white Fiat 500.

A passenger in the Fiesta, a 21-year-old woman, sustained serious injuries.

She was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance where earlier this week she remained in a critical condition.

The Fiesta driver, a man aged

24, sustained chest and shoulder injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

A 55-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Fiat, suffered injuries to her right foot, chest and abdomen and was also taken to the Brighton hospital.

The Audi driver, a man aged 34, and the Fiat driver, a man aged 60, both sustained slight injuries for which they were treated at the Royal Sussex.

Road policing officer Sergeant Alan Spicer said: “I’d like to appeal for anyone who saw the crash, or who noticed any of the cars just beforehand.

“And in particular we’re keen to trace the driver of a red car travelling west towards Great Daux who we believe could be an important witness.”

The A264 was closed to traffic until 2.45am while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Focus on photographers at museum

Independent photographers have their work on display at Horsham Museum.

The display of Independent Photographers South East runs until September 16. This year the group celebrates its 25th anniversary, and it will be showing photographs that it considers thought-provoking, interesting and original.

The photographers run both residential and day workshops led by eminent photographers such as, most recently, Simon Norfolk, and they put on exhibitions every

two years. They describe themselves as a mixed bunch, several with MAs in photography and others with no formal qualifications.

But they all share a passion for the art and craft of photography in its many genres, ranging from pinhole images and cyanotypes, to surreal, contemporary and abstract images. One member has published an Arts Council sponsored book, ‘Downscapes’ of graphic aerial views of the South Downs, another was exhibited alongside Cindy Sherman at The

The show is curated by Mick Williamson, who is Head of Photography at the London Metropolitan University, Sir Hugh Cass Dept. of Art and Design. He is currently running an academic research programme there as well as the admissions to the School of Fine Art. No zone but better air quality Technical problems have ruled out a low emission zone requested by Storrington residents.

But experts say that air quality there is improving despite lack of the zone and are looking at other possible improvements.

A trial in the village has ended with the conclusion that a low emission zone will not be possible in this rural location.

A low emission zone was one of the measures identified in the Storrington Air Quality Action Plan to address the poor air quality in parts of the village. This was the favoured option following a public consultation on the action plan measures.

The low emission zone trial was undertaken in partnership with Siemens UK using their Greenzone low emission zone solution and was started in March 2014. The system uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) to identify the age, type and “Euro” class of vehicles. This was an innovative approach to tackling the air quality problem in the rural setting of Storrington, as such solutions have previously only been tried in urban centres.

Unfortunately the trial experienced a series of data problems that could not be resolved relating to mobile phone signal problems and also because of limitations in the ANPR technology meaning that data could not be adequately captured.

Horsham District Council says it continues to monitor air quality throughout the Storrington air quality management area and the good news is that the levels of nitrogen dioxide have shown an overall downward trend for the majority of the monitoring sites in Storrington.

Other air quality improvement schemes are being explored by the Storrington Air Quality Action Plan Steering Group. The air pollution in Storrington is predominantly traffic related so it has been important for Horsham District Council to work in partnership with West Sussex County Council as they are the highway authority. Both organisations together with Storrington and Sullington Parish Council have representatives on the Steering Group.

The action plan includes a range of measures, both district wide and Storrington specific, many of which were presented at a public consultation event held in Mill Square in February 2013 at which some 1500 people attended. It has been necessary to consider action plan measures in the context of their likely impact on air quality, their deliverability and their value for money.

The Steering Group is continuing to explore solutions to reduce traffic related pollution. The chairman of the Steering Group, Philip Circus, who is both a district and county councillor, said : “There has been much work put in to finding a solution to this very challenging problem and we have been pressing the Government to address this at a national level, particularly with improvements to the A27.

“We are currently assessing the feasibility of other traffic improvement measures to improve traffic flows and therefore reduce pollution in Storrington.”

A leading amateur athlete from Pulborough crippled by osteoarthritis won a sprint triathlon only 12 weeks after having hip replacement surgery.

Michael Rix thought his competitive running career was over when he developed the bone disease in his left hip at 40.

But an implant developed by British company JRI Orthopaedics has helped ensure he is back competing at the highest level as a Team GB athlete, including winning a silver medal in the 2015 World Duathlon Championships.

Michael confesses he was overweight and very unfit when he got a place in the 2004 London Marathon and Triathlon. He said: “I was five stone heavier than I am now with high blood pressure and I couldn’t even get up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath.” But his marathon training gave Michael the fitness bug and, within three years of joining a running club, he was a UK Championship marathon runner and triathlete and competed regularly in half and full Iron Man events. Mike said : “I was running 100 to 120 miles a week at one point and felt like I was invincible, but then one day I got out of bed and found I could not put my sock on.”

Tubby Andrew Turner from Horsham transformed himself into a slim line skateboarder and showed that men need to improve their health as much as women.

Andrews’s efforts to shed a challenging 13st 5lbs got him to the semi-final of a national competition, one of three West Sussex successes.

And his determination to keep to a sensible diet won him praise from the woman who encouraged him on his challenge.

Dion, now presenting daytime TV show Homes under the Hammer, said: “Health and fitness formed a huge part of my career as a footballer, so I know how much effort and dedication it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They’ve taken a really big and important step – a step which a lot of men would find too daunting – I think many people would be guilty of thinking that going to a slimming club isn’t very macho. It takes a lot to recognise that you have a weight problem and then be brave enough to do something about it.”

Photographs sought for wildlife calendar Sunbathing duck by Phil Dennett

Talented photographers could have their work on next year’s Sussex Wildlife Trust calendar.

The Henfield-based charity is looking for 12 beautiful and aweinspiring wildlife and landscape photographs to grace the pages.

The subject matter follows the theme ‘Wild Sussex” and the kind of subjects covered include ladybirds in garden, migrating wildfowl, macro spiders, flowers carpeting a woodland floor, colourful fungi, clouds of downland butterflies and sleeping hedgehog in the park.

The trust said: “Show us the wild places that are special to you.

It could be high on the Downs, deep in the woods or your favourite nature spot in a town or on the coast.”

The first prize is £100 cash and the runner-up will receive a Mark Greco designed mug and tea towel set featuring a common tern or oystercatcher.

Pictures taken by the 12 finalists will appear in the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s 2017 online calendar, and the overall winning image will feature in their members’ magazine, monthly news and on their

website and other social media.

Once selected the 12 finalists will be voted for by the public, to choose the overall winner and the runner-up.

Up to three images may be entered and they must all be in a landscape format and a minimum of 2MB in size. All images must be digital – no slides or prints can be considered. The judges are professional wildlife photographer David Plummer and the editor of Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife magazine, Amanda Reeves.

Shoppers and staff help medical research funding Customers and staff at Marks and Spencer in Horsham have raised more than £1,400 for the Action Medical Research charity based in the town.

Those visiting and working at the store in Swan Walk raised the sum over the past year through donations for bag packing, a raffle and a countertop collection.

Staff, who pledged to support the charity for another 12 months, also volunteered for the children’s charity at Sparks in the Park and helped to pack its popular cream-teas-in-abox last summer.

Action Medical Research, which has its main offices in North Parade, Horsham, has spent more than £110 million since it was founded in 1952, helping support what it calls some amazing medical breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more.

Some of the work it previously supported is now commonplace in medical care, such as the vaccines for polio and rubella, the use of ultrasound scanning in pregnancy and the importance of taking folic acid before and during

pregnancy to prevent spina bifida.

It is currently supporting research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Store staff members Christine Beet and Laura Nias have been spearheading the support and plans for further fundraising include bag packing and a fun day.

Tufail Ahmed, the store manager, said: “Action Medical Research is a hugely important charity to us as its research helps so many young people around the UK. At the store we are really passionate about playing our part, raising vital funds to help ensure the charity can continue its important work for the community.

Holby City actor Marc Elliott becomes a real life hero Actor, Marc Elliott, known for his role as Syed on East Enders and now Issac Mayfield, the charming and confident Doctor in Holby City, is replicating his on screen persona, by helping others in real life.

Marc has decided to take on the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity Arundel to Brighton 35k challenge walk. Starting in the grounds of Arundel Castle at 7.30am and walking across the South Downs, Marc will be raising funds to support children that cannot walk themselves, or without aid, as 1 in 3 children with Cerebral Palsy are affected this way. Marc is taking a step for those children who live with this struggle, to help the charity to continue its work. For 15 years, the charity has been supporting families of young children with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties and in March 2017 Dame Vera will be 100 years old and is extremely passionate about the charity.

Supporter of the charity, Marc, explained: “Nearly three years ago, Sebastian Wenn was born to doting parents (and my dear friends) Ann and Byron. When Sebbie was developing, it became very apparent that, despite his mischievous twinkle and wicked sense of humour, he was making less progress, with speech and movement, than other children of his age.

“After being officially diagnosed with spastic quadriplegia, the most severe form of cerebral palsy, it has become only too clear that the ongoing challenges and difficulties, faced by both Sebbie and his parents, are huge. Having witnessed this first hand through my courageous friend, I feel I can say, with some surety, how physically demanding, emotionally exhausting and, at some times, deeply isolating caring for a child with cerebral palsy can be.

“The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity is so important to parents like Ann and Byron, and invaluable to children like Sebbie, because it provides sessions to help with education and development. Best “behiveiour” as 30,000 lodgers evicted On best “beehiveior

A vet practice in Horsham has carried out a gentle eviction of about 30,000 lodgers after a threat to its patients.

Farthing Vets on Guildford Road has sent a nest of honeybees, which was occupying one of their chimneys, to start a new life

in man-made hives in a field in Ewhurst.

The vets had experienced recurring problems with bees nesting in one of its chimneys for several years.

But this summer their numbers had increased greatly and the in-

sects were finding their way into the kennels, causing staff to have to evacuate them to ensure the safety of their patients.

Given concerns about dwindling bee populations, the practice wanted to remove them safely rather than have them destroyed so contracted local firm PGH Pest Control and Prevention to remove them and take them to start a new life away from the centre of Horsham.

The honeycomb and accompanying bees, estimated to number 30,000, were removed safely from the chimney.

Farthings’ Practice Manager, Angela Batchelor, said: “The bees seem very attracted to our chimneys and we were concerned at the potential risk to our patients.

Having said that, it was important to us that they were removed and not simply destroyed because we understand just how important bees are to our ecosystem and didn’t want to add to the problem of their falling numbers.

“PGH was the only company we contacted which would actually remove them alive. It was amazing watching them bring out the honeycomb and, once they’d completed this delicate operation, they also adapted our chimneys to make them less attractive to bees in the future. We hope the bees will be very happy in their new home!” Farthing Veterinary Group’s also has a branch in Billingshurst.

Horsham staff back national cake contest Staff at a Horsham shop are taking part in a cake competition to help disadvantaged children.

The Big Barnardo’s Bake Off Competition, a cake decorating competition, will feature at “in-toto Kitchens “at Medwin Walk between 1 – 4pm on October 16.

Steyning gears up taste buds for big festival

Traders in Steyning are being given food for thought as the village prepares for its Food and Drink Festival next month.

The festival will be staged from September 3 to October 2 by the Steyning and District Community Partnership Visitors and Tourism Group, under the umbrella of the Horsham Food and Drink Festival, which has been organised

by Horsham District Council for many years.

During the final week of the Festival, from September 26, there will be a Best Food Theme Shop Window competition, with

The festival’s 2016 charity is “Know Dementia” and during the four weeks different venues in the area will hold breakfast and lunch events for this cause. A three-day beer festival will be held at Steyning Cricket Club, sponsored by the Sussex Produce Company and organised

by Adur Brewery.

Carol Drinkwater, star of the television hit All Creatures Great and Small, will talk about her new book during a dinner at the Sussex Produce Café. Also on the agenda are farm walks, cream teas, a wine tasting and nibbles evening, cookery workshops, the Ashurst Tasty Walk, South Downs National Park Walk with a ranger, and the Moving Magical Moments Dinner, which is a meal on the move held in four venues.

After the success of the first Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair last year, employers offering jobs, apprenticeships and career opportunities will once again advertise their opportunities at the Drill Hall, Denne Road in Horsham on September 14 from 11am to 5pm.

The fair, organised by Horsham District Council in partnership with The District Post, Horsham Jobcentre Plus and The College of Richard Collyer, will be a useful opportunity for those seeking a job, thinking of changing their existing one or considering on-the-job training through an apprenticeship to meet a wide range of employers eager to recruit and grow their organisations.

This year more than 30 employers will be present including Gatwick Airport, AJW Aviation, Spofforths , Place for People Leisure, British Army and Trend Control Systems.

Paterson has completed his last evening before turning turning 20, the top age for Air Cadet service.

But he will be returning as an adult member of staff.

The group said that since starting in 2009 he had gone on to exceed all expectations and achieve what it described as incredible things.

Andrew’s passion has always been in standard bearing, which is a person carrying an ensign, is used as a formal and visual symbol of a military unit. Andrew has carried Horsham Air Cadet’s ensign on numerous occasions

His previous Commanding Officer of 1015 (Horsham) Air Cadets, Flight Lieutenant Richard Foster said: “Andrew is an excellent example of what can be achieved by young people if they put their minds to it. The Air Cadets is a fantastic organisation that enables young people like Andrew to achieve incredible opportunities to anyone that is willing to go the extra mile. I am glad that Andrew has chosen to stay on adult staff to help future generations of cadets.”

Andrew is an excellent example of what can be achieved by young people if they put their minds to it.

With what the group call Andrew’s” can-do” attitude, in 2013 he successfully competed in the county competition, going on to represent Sussex at the London and South East competition.

This meant he represented the entire Air Cadet organisation at the Festival of Remembrance by parading the Air Cadet Ensign into the Albert Hall in front of Royalty and VIPs. He returned to the competition the next year and went on to win at a National level. He has already carried the Air Cadet Standard at various national events, including getting a chance to meet Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

His final venture in uniform will be to parade the Air Cadet Ensign in front of a huge crowd of dignitaries and VIPs at the Air Cadet 75th Anniversary parade to be held at RAF Cranwell.

The group says that at the squadron Andrew has been very proactive from day one, taking part in charity events that raised money for both the Squadron and other organisations like the Royal Air Force Association. He designed and delivered the Training Programme on the Squadron for many years, despite him being 70 miles away studying for his degree at Southampton University.

Andrew has enjoyed his time so much that he is due to re-join Horsham Air Cadets as an adult member of staff. This will mean that the wealth of his knowledge will be passed to future generations of cadets.

The Young Leader of the Year Award recognises a young person for their ability to make a real difference in their YMCA by bringing about positive change, working with vision and inspiring others. Emily Kemp is a resident at Horsham Y Centre and has become a member of the group’s People’s Board, and well deserves being shortlisted in this category.

Two group projects have also been shortlisted. Its “Positive Placements” project, which matches local volunteer mentors with young people looking for direction in life, is nominated for The Training and Education Project of the Year Award.

Its “Empty Homes” scheme works to refurbish empty properties turning them into safe, affordable housing for young people, and has been shortlisted in The Accommodation Project of the Year category.

Votes cast by the public will be combined with judges’ choices and the top three nominees in each category will be announced in September. These nominees will attend the finals night at the exclusive venue “8 Northumberland Avenue” in central London, where the winners will be announced.

They asked local supporters to vote for its nominated candidates for a prestigious national youth awards ceremony hosted this autumn by TV presenter June Sarpong.

Voting closed on Monday and the members are now awaiting an announcement next month.

Swing boats that bring back memories of centuries past have been lovingly restored for Wisborough Green’s annual Fete on August 29.

They will take pride of place on the village green on Bank Holiday Monday amongst a range of attractions.

About two hundred years ago, swing boats were so common and so popular at travelling fairs or village fetes that once attractions were up and running the shout would go out “The fair is in full swing.”

In the north east the boats were called when first introduced in

Victorian times “shuggy boats” and northerners were often puzzled and amused by the later southern name of swing boat.

From the early models a pair of riders pulled the boats to and fro, providing all the momentum.

A less energetic version arrived with steam power, but it is the human-powered version that charms and entertains crowds most nowadays.

Wisborough’s current set of swingboats first swung into action more than a quarter of a century ago and were in need of a little repairing and refreshing.

Help others with touch of “hospice-tality”

People are being invited to swap a night out for a night in to help a hospice.

St Catherine’s Hospice is asking the local community to bring together their family, friends orwork colleagues for what it calls a “Big Get Together” to support their local hospice this October.

It has teamed up with 11 other hospices across Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Berkshire, to launch aninitiative that asks people to swap a night out for a night in, in exchange for donations fromguests for their “hospice-tality.”

The Crawley-based hospice said: “By staying in, it is not only a chance for you to show that you are the host with the most,

it is also a chance to show your support for St Catherine’s, and to help make sure that the local hospice can continue to provide vital end of life care to people in your local community. “Your Big Get Together can be as simple or sophisticated as you like. Whether you host a family barbeque, cocktails and canapes evening, games night, pamper party, fancy dress or PJ party, anything goes. And even better, whatever you decide to do will make a real difference to terminally ill people in your local community.”

The hospice says that raising just £35 would fund a counselling session for a bereaved relative, £48 would cover the cost of a

patient receiving a visit from St Catherine’s Practical Care Team in the comfort of their own home, £56 would provide an hour’s physiotherapy or occupational therapy, helping a patient to live well and remain independent, while £170 would enable a patient to visit St Catherine’s Day Hospice for an entire day, to meet others in a similar situation and enjoy wellbeing activities as varied as art and music therapy, meditation and exercise classes.

When you sign up to join the Big Get Together Campaign, support provided includes a pack full of fundraising ideas, a Big Get Together money box for your donations and template invitations, posters and bunting to help you publicise your event.

A dedicated website (www.TheBigGetTogether.org.uk) can also help with ideas and inspiration to make the gettogether a night to remember.

People can set their own dates, perhaps during Hospice Care Week from October 3-9, when lots of other Big Get Togethers will be taking place, or there might be another date that is uniquely memorable to someone.

Wilderness Wonder Ball is nature charity’s first The Henfield-based Sussex Wildlife Trust is holding its first charity ball next month.

Called the Wilderness Wonder Ball, it will be staged on September 17 to help raise funds that will protect the beautiful landscapes and wild places of Sussex.

The charity says that by protecting habitats throughout the county, wildlife will thrive and in some cases species with dwindling numbers such as dormice and hedgehogs will be given a new lease of life.

Ball guests will be welcomed to a luxury marquee set in the grounds of Folkington Manor Private Estate, nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park between Lewes and Eastbourne. After a drinks reception on arrival, there will be a three course meal designed to showcase sustainable locally sourced food followed by a raffle and both a live and a silent auction.

A special star act appearance by Bjorn Again will provide the highlight of the evening as

they perform the greatest hits of ABBA to encourage everyone to their feet to dance into the small hours rounding off a spectacular evening.

The Wilderness Wonder Ball is expected to attract more than 400 people from Sussex business, local celebrities and people with a love of all things wild interested in helping to promote the wonderfully rich wildlife found in our towns, countryside and coast.

Runners in the 34th Barns Green Half Marathon will be raising money to help people with cancer and other lifethreatening problems.

Organisers have decided to make St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley the event’s chosen charity this year. The event will also feature for the first time a 10km race.

Organisers say this year’s event promises to be bigger than ever as the organisers have introduceda 10km race to take place alongside the half marathon. Both take place on September 25 , with the half marathon starting at 10am and the 10km race at 10.20am. The 10km race will start at the same

place as the Half Marathon and the finish will be beside the Green in Sandhill Road.

The10km race which will be open to anyone over the age of 16 and like the Half Marathon will take place on closed roads and will follow part of the Half Marathon route. There will be an additional section of the 10km route that will take place in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. There will be the usual medals and prizes for the 10km race and the entrance fee will be £15 for affiliated runners and £17 for unaffiliated.

Mentors ought as career support scheme expands Adult mentors are being sought for an expanded support scheme to help youngsters start a career.

YMCA Positive Placements Horsham is currently recruiting for potential adult volunteers for its Positive Placements scheme.

With support from Horsham District Council and funding from Think Family Neighbourhood, YMCA DownsLink Group has recently expanded its existing mentoring scheme called Positive Placements, which helps young people get onto the career ladder.

The scheme supports young people aged 16 to 25 who are unemployed or not in education or training and young people who are at risk of becoming unemployed or leaving school or college without firm plans for their future.

Volunteer mentors from the local community work with young people to help them overcome low self-esteem and lack of confidence as well as support them with work experience, job search, preparing for interviews and looking for other opportunities.

It is a completely voluntary programme offered to young people from anywhere within the Horsham district and young people can get support for up to a year with their men-

tor.

The district council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing Cllr Kate Rowbottom said: “I fully support this scheme where adult volunteers work alongside our young people to build their confidence, improve their life skills and write CVs to help them move on to education, training or employment. I would urge as many young people as possible to engage with this scheme.”

Positive Placements Coordinator Catherine Pardoe said: “I look forward to hearing from anyone who would be interested in training to become a mentor to help Horsham’s most vulnerable young people move forward on their journey to work. Volunteers need to be able to spare a couple of hours a week. We are looking for people who are good listeners, non- judgemental and empathetic.” Training and ongoing support is offered to all volunteers.

With the UK’s decision now made to leave the EU and economic uncertainty all around, whether your business is large or small an economic downturn can pose a serious threat to your business showing just how vulnerable businesses are to outside influences.

Typical problems associated with an economic downturn are: 1) A decline in sales and/or customer orders 2) A fall in profits 3) An increase in the time it takes for customers to pay 4) A decline in exports 5) And a build up of stock Smaller Businesses can be the most vulnerable, especially young ones which have grown quickly and have a substantial amount of debt.

If your business is to survive a downturn, it is essential that you are prepared. You have to anticipate likely changes, work out how they are going to affect you both in the short-term and the longerterm and prepare a plan of action to address these changes.

Planning should begin before a down turn takes hold i.e. NOW. Take the opportunity to look at your business’ performance before interest rates increase, the cost of supplies increases and customers start cutting costs.

If you are planning to expand your business, consider the effect a downturn may have. Remember to plan for the upturn: - cutting certain costs now may lead to extra costs following the contraction (or recession).

Look back at what happened in previous economic downturns: 1) If your current business was trading during the last recession, then remind yourself of how you managed. Which areas of the business were most vulnerable?

2) If your business hasn’t faced a downturn or recession before, then look at what happened within your particular business sector.

You should be able to identify what similar businesses/ your competitors have done to successfully manage through a recession.

I’m certain that most of us will have seen, or at least heard of, the phenomenal musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.

Based on the story of Joseph, in the Book of Genesis, the tale is one of favouritism, jealousy, deceit, regret and forgiveness.

Though a gripping tale in itself, the magic ingredient, that made this particular Bible story so popular, was the teaming of lyricist Tim Rice (who recently gave a speech, at Christ’s Hospital School, on ‘The importance of failure’) and musician Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Last week, The Capitol Summer School performed Joseph, much to the delight of audiences, and my husband and I were lucky enough to have caught it.

Sets, lighting, music and

high calibre acting, resulted in a sizzling performance that all involved should be proud of. A very convincing Joseph, successfully carried the audience through the highs and lows of the young man’s life; the immensely entertaining pharoah (who arrived in style, on a souped up mobility scooter - turned Roman charriot!) provided laughs galore; the hugely talented narrators sang us from one scene to the next, Jacob and the rest of his sons, taught us a lesson on the dangers of child

favouritism and sibling rivalry, while all other cast members did a brilliant job... the cute factor came from the youngest members, who donned the sweetest animal costumes - my favourite of the lot were the camels, whose legs were the performers’, while tiny fake legs replaced those of the riders!

It was difficult to believe that these youngsters had just 9 days to learn lines, dance moves and directions. Bravo, Capitol Summer School, for graduating in style!

Dramatic Society (HAODS) are bringing one of the world’s bestloved musicals, ‘Annie’, to The Capitol this November and are looking for a lovable canine pal to join them on stage.

HAODS has been entertaining Horsham for over 60 years, but this is the first time they’ve done ‘Annie’. Their version of this sunny musical will be performed by two, all-singing all-dancing, casts of children, plus a talented adult cast, to give us a heartwarming show about optimistic orphan Annie’s adventures to find her parents.

Youngsters of Horsham are being invited to get active, with a range of fun and inspiring activities, this Saturday (August 20).

Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre are showcasing their under 5’s programme, where the young visitors can try one, or all, of the activities on offer, which include jumping in muddy puddles and the Peppa Steppa dance routine, at Move with Peppa; climbing, balancing and crawling around the Dinomites circuit; following sporty cat and the krew at FUNdamentals gymnastics, or just keeping the Little Jumping Juniors

entertained on the bouncy castle and trampoline.

Jenny Richardson, Junior Activities Manager from Broadbridge Heath, said: “Following on from our last taster day in April, we are offering the youngsters a chance to try our session again. The day was so popular and it was a pleasure to see the children enjoying themselves so much. Being active has never been so important and it’s crucial to develop these healthy habits from a young age.

In addition to keeping children active, all of our sessions work on

key motor skills, including balance, co-ordination and agility, as well as providing the opportunity for children to interact with each other and develop social skills. But most of all, we’re here to make sure everyone has fun!”

Rise in firstInterest rate cut is good news for West Sussex housing market time buyers The Bank of England’s decision to cut interest rates for the first time in seven years spells good news for West Sussex propertywatchers.

The recent decision by the bank of England means that the base rate now stands at a record low of 0.25 per cent, and anthe latest nouncement last week conhas firmed this that cut will be passed on to buyers home ger to easecure a

cheaper mortgage rate.

This interest rate cut is in addition to the already reduced rates and increased flexibility from some mortgage providers, leading to an increase in confidence and affordability for West Sussex house hunters, be it first-time buyers, downsizers or anyone in between.

propertymarketA number of factors - including cheaper mortgages, a rise in first-time buyers and more choice - have combined to create a positive outlook for the property market.

The Bank of England’s recent decision to lower the base rate to 0.25 per cent has encouraged eight of the UK’s ten largest mortgage lenders to lower their standard variable rates, while figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders show 68,200 loans were taken out by first-time buyers in June, an increase of 26 per cent on May and eight per cent on June 2015.

A rise in supply is also helping buyers, with Rightmove reporting the average estate agents had 61 properties for sale on its books in July, up from 60 in June and 59 in May. Kevin Shaw, national sales director at property specialist Leaders, says there has been a notable uplift in the property market in recent weeks, with many buyers and sellers enjoying a renewed sense of confidence following the result of the EU referendum.

“A reduction in mortgage rates and more loans for first-time buyers is great news that will help to get Britain moving,” Kevin explains.

“It is clear that people are using the summer as an opportunity to make their next move. With Rightmove figures showing a rise in available stock and our own statistics revealing an increase in the number of new properties brought to the market, buyers are benefiting from more choice.”

“While the precise impact of Brexit is still unknown, it has not yet had an effect and it is business as usual for the property market.

After all, people still need to take their next step, find a home for their family or buy for the first time, so we expect activity to remain strong.”

The latest findings also mean more first-time buyers are getting on the property ladder and doing so is becoming simpler for young people.

Kevin adds: “Supporting firsttime buyers is key to creating a healthy market. By allowing people to buy their first property, others are able to quickly sell their homes and take their next step up to a property that meets their needs.

“It is encouraging to see that first-time buyers are able to more easily access mortgages and repayments are now more affordable due to the fall in rates.”

Pulborough keep promotion hopes alive Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC The climax of both the men’s West Sussex Bowls League and the mixed Brookes Motors League are fast approaching.

Pulborough played at home to Goring Manor Spitfires in the WSBL where 4 rinks played 21 ends of close bowls, with Pulborough scoring points for 2 rink wins and overall victory, 72/67 putting them in second place in the league behind East Preston.

Sussex Premier League Horsham 295 – 2 declared (55 overs) Worthing 158 All Out (40.4 overs) Horsham won by 137 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham completely outplayed Worthing, notching up a 137 run 30 point win. Yet, after winning the toss Horsham were promptly 6-1 and then 49-2, but that was as good as it got for Worthing as the first class cricket experience

of Michael Thornely and Will Beer shone through.

Their unbroken, chanceless 246 run third wicket stand had supporters racking their brains to recall a bigger Horsham partnership. Thornely’s 151 included 7 sixes, the last 50 runs coming off just 20 balls. It was a good weekend at the crease for the Thornelys, Michael’s brother Jamie getting 87 not out for Horsham seconds. Given Worthing’s track record this season, the likelihood of them overtaking Horsham’s 295 was remote. They did, though,

go down fighting with a ninth wicket stand of 52, but after opening bowlers Jonny Whiting and David Croshaw took two wickets each Worthing had no real answer to Michael Munday and Beer, who ended with 3 wickets scalps apiece. Horsham Chairman Richard Marshall said: “Michael and Will showed the others how to bat – they were never in any hurry and just took everything as it came – until Michael got his hundred and then he cut loose!

Understandably they were quite happy with the wicket, and so were Worthing, despite their defeat. The plan was for Horsham to declare to give themselves a bit more time to bowl out Worthing and that worked out nicely although we won with plenty of overs to spare.”

With three games remaining and a maximum 90 points available, Horsham are now fourth on 300, behind Roffey (359), Cuckfield (340) and Bexhill (315). Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham travel to relegation threatened Billingshurst, whom they beat by 9 wickets at Cricketfield Road in June. Then on the following Saturday, August 27 they have an always hard fought local derby, away to Roffey, before concluding the season at Cricketfield Road against East Grinstead on September 3.

For all money Billingshurst had Hastings dead and buried but somehow contrived to lose a game that was surely theirs for the taking.

Hastings won the toss, elected to bat and soon found themselves 19-3, wicket keeper Rob Woodman taking three catches off the bowling of Sussex second XI’s Abidine Sakande. Efforts at rebuilding faltered as Hastings stuttered to 39-5, until Elliot Hooper (46) and Finnegan Hulbert (16) staged a partial recovery. But, once they were out subsequent contributions were inadequate and the innings closed on 114, Sakande finishing with 4-33 and Tom Haynes 3-18, Captain Ben Williams and Andy Barr sharing the remaining spoils. Hovering over the relegation precipice and in dire need of a maximum 30 point win, Billingshurst were by far the happier team at the break and at 42-2 were well placed to secure victory, only to fold meekly. Thivanka Ratarante’s 19, the only double figure score by a Billingshurst batsman, lacked support, Jed O’Brien and Hooper taking 8-26 between them in just 12.2 overs as the hosts crashed to 64-7, the end following swiftly

in a very disappointing display, just when a much needed win was firmly signalled.

A very disappointed Ben Williams told the District Post: “We bowled well and thought we could win – we should have done. The wicket was turning, but it was really poor batting and nothing to do with the pitch”. The bottom two teams will be relegated and Billingshurst with 184 points are 57 ahead of beleaguered Worthing but now 35 behind Brighton & Hove, who surprisingly notched up their second successive win – against Preston Nomads at Fulking.

On Saturday (tomorrow) Billingshurst host Horsham at Jubilee Fields, following which, on August 27, East Grinstead is the venue ahead of the final fixture against Preston Nomads at home on September 3.

League restructuring postponed amid concerns Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

The much-vaunted but contested restructuring of recreational league cricket in Sussex has been postponed.

The long-held intention of the Executive Committee of the Sussex Cricket Premier League is to reorganise cricket across the whole of Sussex – East and West – into feeder leagues in a pyramid structure with the Premier League (in which Horsham, Roffey and Billingshurst’s first XIs currently play) at the apex. However, the process is far from straightforward, with considerable difficulties arising from the integration of existing leagues into the proposed new arrangement and a number of clubs have expressed severe reservations about the likely placement of their sides within the new system. The concept is to foster the development of the whole of Sussex cricket within the new county organisation, but the present leagues have taken some years to evolve and although great

efforts have been made to take into account the wishes of players, to create shorter travelling times, especially in the lower divisions, and to place teams as fairly as possible, concerns over the proposed restructuring remain, particularly regarding promotion and relegation issues. Ansty, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Lindfield are known to oppose the proposals – with the backing of a number of other clubs – and alternative ideas have been suggested and a Special General Meeting mooted. Reluctantly, therefore the Executive Committee have accepted that it will not be possible to introduce their hoped for changes in time for the 2017 season, so the existing leagues and promotion and relegation formats will continue for the time being. Although the restructuring has been shelved for one year while the changes are reconsidered, in view of the level of opposition towards the proposals there must be some doubt as to whether they will be introduced in the foreseeable future.

YM off to a flying start on the south coast Southern Combination Football League Premier Div Peacehaven & Telscombe 3 – 4 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor In a game that saw Horsham YMCA dominate the first half and their hosts dominate the second, YM got their season off to a flying start with a good away win at highly fancied Peacehaven & Telscombe.

After leading 4-0 with just 38 minutes played YM were in the end made to hang on as Peacehaven stormed back with a goal just before the break and 2 further strikes in the second period.

YM were quick out of the blocks with Sam Schaaf getting on the end of a cross in the second minute to give home ‘keeper Alieu Secka no chance. Secka was picking the ball out of his net again 2 minutes later when the lively Phil Johnson made it 2-0. Peacehaven were simply not in the game at this stage and any resemblance of an attack on Mark Fox’s goal was easily snuffed out by the well organised back line. Not surprisingly it was not long before YM extended their lead; this time it was Ashley Dug-

dale with a well taken lob over Secka for 3-0. When Phil Johnson grabbed his second goal and his team’s fourth in the 38th minute the game looked well and truly over as a contest but Peachaven had other ideas.

Hope for Peachaven came two minutes before the break when Dean Carden brought down Cameron Wiltshire in the area and Jack Langford slotted home the penalty.

Whatever was said by the home side’s manager during the break worked wonders as Peacehaven came out looking a different side to that given the run-around in the first half. After dominating the play from the restart Jack Langford scored his second of the match and when Cameron Wiltshire made it 4-3 in the 77th minute it was game on. Despite Peacehaven pushing hard for the equaliser YM saw out the remaining minutes to take all 3 points, prompting Manager Peter Buckland to say, “The first half was as good as the second half was bad. But we did well to win the first game of the season and walk away with three points. The second half was tense towards the end, but we came through and just about did enough”.

Horsham’s return to Ryman League football ended in a disappointing defeat to Carshalton in a game in which they were second best. If Dom Di Paola needed any reminder in the gulf in class between the Ryman and the Southern Combination leagues he certainly got one in the season’s opener.

Although missing a number of players and having to field three who signed in the week – defenders Lewis Hyde and Matt Whitehead and goalkeeper Anthony Elder – Horsham were well beaten by a side that showed the strength, knowhow and speed required to compete at this level.

The new pair of ‘keeper Ender and defender Hyde were in action early as Mickel Miller easily rounded Ender only for Hyde to clear off the line. Former Hornet Jahmahl King nearly gifted his old side a goal when his poor back pass was collected by Terry Dodd who in turn found Darren Boswell who lobbed ‘keeper Alexandros Kozakis but also cleared the bar.

Straight away after Boswell’s miss Carshalton took the lead through the lively Miller who hit a fierce shot that seemed to go under Ender and into the net. Carshalton were having the better of the play and the majority of the chances to score although Boswell should have atoned for his earlier miss but could only shoot weakly at Kozakis. lowed Ricky Korboa to score for a 2-0 half time advantage. Di Paola replaced Scott Harris with Charlie Pitcher as he adopted a more attacking approach to the second period. Carshalton however looked comfortable and content to sit back on their lead and play on the break with Panton and Miller causing Horsham problems. The visitors killed off the game midway through the half when Peter Adeniyi ran through numerous challenges before crossing for Korboa to score. Horsham did grab a late consolation goal through George Branford who cross shot went in off the post.

Realistically, with the vast majority of the Horsham squad having never played at this level, if Di Paola can get his side to consolidate their Ryman League status without getting involved in a season long relegation battle, he will have done well.

From the kick off Heath were on the front foot with Stuart Chester testing Town’s keeper Luke Hutchings in the first minute.

Minutes later however Hutchings could do nothing to prevent Tiago Andrade from giving Heath the lead with a right foot free-kick that flew into the top left corner.

Heath continued to storm forward going close to adding to the lead through Timmy Martin and Jake Holmes. Chester, playing as a wide midfielder, again showed his creativity by getting in behind the defence and squaring for Andrade who rounded the keeper for 2-0 with 31 minutes played. Two minutes later and it was 3-0 when Chester turned from provider to scorer when he glanced Piers McDermott’s long throw past

Hitchings.

Heath’s relentless momentum was halted in the 38th minute when after uncharacteristically dropping a cross allowing Town’s Marshall Ball to score a simple goal, Heath ‘keeper Michael Chester sustained what turned out to be a fractured finger and with no ‘keeper on the bench Andy Howard pulled on the gloves.

In the reshuffle Stuart Chester dropped into the centre of defence putting an end to his creative spell our wide. Despite the changes Heath extended their lead when Martin found Jake Holmes who drilled a shot in the bottom corner for 4-1at the break.

Within 3 minutes of the restart the visitors pulled a goal back when Ross McKay steered the ball though a crowded goalmouth into the net. Heath still looked a threat and could have scored again through Andrade; his free kick smashing against the post. In the 68th minute the Heath supporters were given reason to get a bit worried when Alexander Kew reduced the deficit further with a fierce shot from distance for 4-3.

Instead of letting the nerves get to them Heath responded well and finished the game the much stronger and again should have added to the score with both Jamie Liddell and Holmes seeing efforts crash against the bar.

At Bexhill’s Polegrove ground Roffey won the toss, put the hosts in, bowled them out for 143 (five less than they were dismissed for in the home fixture) and won by five wickets before 5.30. If that sounds routine, it really was.

Three Bexhill batsmen got into the twenties but progress was cautious and stuttering in the face of sustained Roffey control and only skipper Jonathan Haffenden passed 30. George Fleming bowled unchanged, sending down 26 overs for 4-59, including the prized scalp of prolific Aussie all rounder Sam Roberts, castled through the gate. Roffey captain, wicket keeper Matt Davies, took three catches standing up, Leigh Harrison, Rohit Jagota and Luke Barnard each taking two wickets.

The highlight for Roffey in the outfield was Alex Southon’s stunning one-handed catch at deep fine leg when he dived full length, seemingly trying to save a four but dramatically clinging onto the

ball just before it hit the turf.

Roffey lost two early wickets, but thirties from Theo Rivers and Usman Khan and a cultured 45 not out from Jagota saw them home with almost 25 overs to spare.

Roffey remain top, still 19 ahead of Cuckfield who also pulled off a 30 point win, Matt Davies telling the District Post: “That was a good win, we fielded well – Alex’s catch was ridiculous! And, we hit 20 fours and 5 sixes, putting away the bad balls, which they didn’t, we had to bat well, though – on that very dry wicket getting 180 might not have been too easy.

With three games left we’re in a useful position but we’re certainly not taking anything for granted.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Worthing, doomed for relegation bar a miracle, are Roffey’s opponents back at home, then Roffey’s last two games are against Horsham also at home - on August 27, and Brighton & Hove away on September 3.

YM breeze past Wick to remain unbeaten Southern Combination Football League Premier Div Horsham YMCA 5 - 3 Littlehampton Town Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA maintained their winning start to the season with a convincing win over Wick on Tuesday night at Gorings Mead.

Despite going 1-0 down to Rob Hutchings’ 17th minute penalty YM got the better of a goal fest of a second half to take their second maximum points in 4 days.

Hutchings penalty was quickly equalised when Sam Schaaf scored just before the half hour. A fairly cagey remainder of the half saw

no more goals and showed little indication of what the second period would bring.

Wick again took the lead when Joe Matthews scored in the 53rd minute only for the prolific Sam Schaaf to level things again 6 minutes later. Within a matter of minutes Phil Johnson took YM into the lead and then he made it 4-2 with 10 minutes to go.

Still Wick would not lie down and Morgan Forry pulled a goal back before Martin Smith wrapped the game up in the last minute.

YM are next in action in the Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup next Tuesday (August 23) at home to Selsey.

Holmes hat-trick gives high scoring Heath victory Southern Combination Football League Premier Div Lancing 2 - 5 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor A second half Jake Holmes hat-trick went a long way to giving Broadbridge Heath another good win as they came away from Lancing’s Culver Road 3G playing surface with another 3 points and another hat full of goals.

Heath have now scored 9 in their opening two fixture, the only concern for manager Steve Painter may be that they have also conceded 5 in those two games.

Heath led at the break 1-0

through a Tim Martin goal in the 28th minute but swamped Lancing in the second period.

Jake Holmes grabbed the first of his three 3 minutes after the restart to double Heath’s advantage only for Lancing’s Jake Mills to pull one back almost immediately. Shaun Findlay restored Heath’s two goal buffer on 53 minutes before Holmes took over by completing his hat-trick in the 69th and 72nd minutes; taking his side into a 5-1 lead. Harry Heath did pull a goal back for the home side with 8 minutes remaining but Heath saw out the game for another fine victory.

Heath will entertain Wick at the Leisure Centre in the cup on Saturday (August 20).

Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Greenwich Borough 4 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Kent has never been a happy hunting ground for Horsham and Tuesday night’s trip up to the DGS Marine Stadium continued the trend; although calling Eltham part of Kent may be

stretching things slightly.

It was a match of Ryman League new boys as like Horsham Borough had won their division last season to claim their place at the higher level. However on this showing they seem far more prepared for the step up in class than Horsham.

Horsham started well and had the best of the opening 15 minutes with the lively looking Darren Boswell putting Terry Dodd through for a chance and having a shot saved by home ‘keeper Craig

Holloway. Borough were given a way back into the game on the half hour when Scott Harris hit a poor pass that Jake Britnell pounced on to score. Horsham were still well in the game and just before the break Joe Shelley headed a fraction wide following a long free kick.

Horsham went 2-0 down 5 minutes into the restart when Robert Denness nipped in to beat the static Anthony Ender in goal. Horsham’s best player on the night, Darren Boswell, was

replaced by Charlie Pitcher on the hour due to an injury and things went downhill fast. Borough were now the far better side and Britnell had a simple task to score his second and his team’s third in the 67th minute as once again the Hornets defence lacked urgency. The fourth goal for Borough summed up Horsham and the first two games of this season when a long range punt at goal from Britnell went past Ender low to his right. Like the previous Saturday

Horsham did manage to get a late consolation goal as Charlie Pitcher drilled a shot past Holloway in injury time.

This Saturday (August 20) the Hornets get a break from league action as they travel to Sevenoaks Town in the FA Cup Preliminary round. Sevenoaks, who unlike Greenwich Borough are undoubtedly a Kent side, play in the Southern Counties East Premier Division and will be another tough test for Horsham.
