Impressive A levels as next generation steps up phil dennett News Editor
As the next generation of A level students picked up crucial GCSE results yesterday, the outgoing one prepared for the next stage in life after collecting impressive A level results last week. On Thursday of last week hundreds of youngsters across the district collected A level results with the annual mix of hugs, celebration and calls home from mobile phones, as well as a few shrugs of the shoulders and tears at disappointing results. For most there was some reason to party or a sigh with relief, while their schools and colleges across the district reported delight at their efforts. Christ’s Hospital reported 70 per cent of passes at A*-B, Collyer’s had an A2 pass rate of 99 per cent, Steyning Grammar celebrated a 99 per cent overall pass rate, and Farlington reported outstanding results. The optimism was reflected by West Sussex County Council, which said early reports provided by school sixth forms showed that young people in West Sussex
continue to perform well at A2 , the full A Level that most students take at the age of 18 at the end of a two year course. They also did well at AS Level, which is taken by most students at age 17 after one year or as an addition to A2 at age 18. The A2 grades for A*-E in West Sussex this year are above national and an improvement on last year. The proportion of passes at A*-B were also slightly up this year. At AS the percentage of passes at Grades A and B show an improvement on last year. Good results have also been achieved by young people obtaining BTEC Certificates. Christine Field, acting Cabinet Member for Education and Skills congratulated all West Sussex students studying in Local Authority maintained schools, academies and colleges on their achievements. She said: “I am absolutely delighted with the work ethic shown by students in order to achieve their personal goals. “I would like to acknowledge the on-going hard work of our teachers in helping young people to achieve these goals, and the tremendous contribution of parents and carers in offering support to youngsters at what I know can be a very stressful time.”

Residents are being invited to help shape a proposed new community service that will particularly help people in more rural locations. They are being asked for views on a five year project that will tackle increasing challenges of cold homes and costly energy bills, lack of digital skills and services and difficulty in accessing debt and financial advice. Horsham District Council is making a bid to the Reaching Communities Big Lottery Fund for £500,000 for the scheme. The proposed improvements would provide a mobile service across the district to give enhanced support and advice to residents. The council would also work with other organisations to help deliver this service. As part of its bid to the lottery fund the council would like to include the views of as many residents as possible living in the Horsham district on the type of support that people need and how current services could be improved. The feedback from the survey
will not only help shape the services the council hopes to build but also help support the funding bid. Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers is inviting local people to share their views in a resident’s survey. She said: “We would be grateful if you could spend a few minutes completing the survey which focusses on questions about the three key areas that the bid aims to address. “Our resident’s views are very important to us and we are committed to improving services. “The survey can be found in the autumn edition of Horsham District News which will be landing on doormats at the end of August. Alternatively the survey can be completed online at www. horsham.gov.uk.” Completed entries can be entered into a draw for a prize of £100 high street voucher. Residents should return the survey by September 23. Anyone with a query may contact the council via e mail at helen.peacock@horsham. gov.uk or call 01403 215513.

Firefighters phenomenal effort helps charities Two die minute in sweltering conditions, raising a lot of money for charity along the way. “Although, the team may not have set any official records, they smashed the target they set themselves. Phenomenal firefighters
Although, the team may not have set any official records, they smashed the target they set themselves
Three charities were the winners when a team of trainee firefighters from West Sussex staged a world record attempt in Horsham. Although the attempt in searing heat did not succeed it raised more than £1,200 to be split between The Fire Fighters Charity, the Golden Lion Children’s Trust and the Keep Connor Active appeal. The 12 recruits, who are nearing the end of an intensive 14week training course to become
wholetime community firefighters in West Sussex, took on the challenge to set a record for the furthest vertical distance travelled up a ladder and down a firefighter’s pole in one hour to raise money for charity. A tower with a 5.6-metre pole was specially erected for the event outside the Carfax in Horsham by Worth Scaffolding. Despite soaring temperatures, the fledgling firefighters managed to climb and slide a combined total 9,020 metres in 60 minutes.
With donations still coming in, the team’s lung-busting efforts have so far raised an impressive £1230 for The Fire Fighters Charity, the Golden Lion Children’s Trust and the Keep Connor Active appeal. Training Delivery Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Keith Parvin said: “This was a phenomenal effort by our trainees and we’re incredibly proud of them. They gave it 100% effort from the first minute of the challenge to the last
cheer us on and all those who have donated. Knowing how much support we had spurred us on when it got really tough. We’ll be keeping the fundraising page open and we’d love people to keep donating to help us raise even more money for three great causes.” People can still support the recruits and their fundraising efforts by donating via https:// crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ WSFRSworldrecord where all the donations will go directly to the charities.

Fire fighters urge electric blanket checks Owners of electric blankets are being urged to get them checked for safety. One in three were dangerous when tested last year and some presented fire hazards. One elderly man in West Sussex died earlier this year in a blaze caused by a faulty blanket. The free checking session in Horsham will be held at Lavinia House at Dukes Square on October 5. It is one of several across West Sussex between October 4 to 27 organised by the county’s fire brigade . The other testing centre in Horsham district is at the Fire Station, School Hill, Storrington on October 6. This year the testing sessions are supported by Dreamland,
which is offering a 25% discount off the recommended retail price
Sadly, in April this year, a man in his 70s from Littlehampton died as a result of a fire started by an electric blanket on their heated blankets presented at the events, to replace electric blankets found to be a potential fire risk. Jackie Boyle, Community Fire Safety Manager for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said:

Get blankets tested say firefighters
“Last year we tested 375 electric blankets and more than a third of them carried a potential fire risk. Such a high proportion really highlights the value of getting them checked regularly. “Sadly, in April this year, a man in his 70s from Littlehampton died as a result of a fire started by an electric blanket. The elderly can be especially vulnerable, which is why we’re urging people to take up the free test.” Booking is by appointment only on a first come first served basis, please call 0845 872 9719 to find your nearest venue. Steyning Grammar scores 99 per cent A level pass rate
Bright futures as head praises Farlington A level students Head of Farlington Louise Higson said of the Horsham school’s A level results: “Another successful year for Farlington. I am delighted that the hard work and commitment of the girls has been so well rewarded; there is much cause for celebration. University destinations include Bristol, York, Exeter and Edinburgh, with girls studying courses ranging from Biochemistry to Law. It
Students at Steyning Grammar Sixth Form College achieved a 99 per cent pass rate at A level, with more than half at A* to B grades. And in 30 subjects the sixth formers achieved a 100 per cent pass rate. Headteacher Nick Wergan said: “We are yet again immensely proud of our fantastic Sixth Form students whose hard work and determination has produced the outstanding outcomes they deserve. “A pass rate 99% at A level from a cohort of 274 students for the fourth consecutive year is a measure of this success, with 24% of our results at the highest A or A* level and 52% at B Grade or higher. Given the national context of fluctuating results, and the changes to linear testing, it is incredibly pleasing to see our high standards again maintained. “In 30 of our A level subjects, the pass rate was 100%. Value added is once again strongly positive, indicating that Steyning Sixth Form College students
make stronger progress than the national average from GCSE to A level.Sixth Form exams are tough qualifications – our students have shown the grit and growth mindsets needed to be successful, guided by excellent teaching and support staff. “It requires a great team effort, from students, home and school, for a Sixth Form of our size to perform with consistent excellence like this, and I am grateful to all for meeting our high expectations. As ever, it is the way our students achieve as well as what they achieve that impresses me and I thank them all for the zest and curiosity they have put into being such fantastic Steyning Grammar role models. “They deserve the exciting destinations in front of them, at University, in work and increasingly in post-18 Apprenticeships and I am hugely confident of their future accomplishments in these pathways. These results have opened the doors for them, and
their strong Learning Characteristics will ensure they continue to be happy and successful”. Five students attained four or more A* and A grades; Rosie Dommett going to University of Sheffield with 1 A* and 4 A grades to read Physics and Astrophysics; Amy Haeffner who will study Medical Sciences at the University of Exeter with 4 A grades and 1 A*; Ben O’ Brien with 4 A* grades has been accepted for Physics with Theoretical Physics at Imperial College, London; Calum White with 3A* and 1 A grade who takes up a place at the University of Oxford to follow a degree course in Physics and Jocelyn Francis with 3 A* and 1 A grade will be studying Psychology at Bristol University. Serious purpose behind fun challenge Fantastico as head
opens outdoor stage
Team takes breather
Players in the Gauntlet Games had a serious purpose as they enjoyed the fun of the challenges. They were raising money for family support charity HomeStart CHAMS, which serves Horsham and other areas. Participants fought with Gladiators along the 5km course, as well as bouncing and sliding their way through all kinds of crazy obstacles.Home-Start had a team taking part in the hilarious challenge, to help raise much needed funds for its work. Leia Austin and friends decided to get involved and Leia said: “It looked like such a fun challenge. It was a personal
goal for me to complete it and all our team wanted to raise money for Home-Start, to help support local children.” The charity reaches hundreds of local children each year through their support of families struggling with issues such as isolation, neglect, illness, bereavement and disability. They work throughout Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex, where in the last year they supported 436 children in 175 families.Home-Start volunteers were also helping out at the Games, taking on a range of different roles, including being Gladiators for the day. Aneliese Whittaker, Event and
Community Fund Raiser, said of the event at Handcross, near Horsham: “The day was great, all of our runners and volunteers enjoyed themselves and really loved the fun factor of the event. Our volunteers were amazing from helping people slide down the ‘Flume of doom’ to handing out finishing medals, they thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.” Thanks to the fundraising effort of Leia and her team, as well as donations made by people who came along to the Games, Home-Start was pleased to announce that a total of just over £1,500 has been raised so far.
It was a case of “fantastico” when a school head opened a new outdoor stage. Head of Farlington School at Horsham Louise Higson spoke in Italian at the ribbon-cutting , and her speech was followed by a variety of amusing sketches and songs in Italian, German, Spanish and French by girls in Years 8 to 10. Farlington’s approach to teaching modern languages incorporates drama at the heart of its learning strategy. In addition to the three classroom stages, a new outdoor performance space has been constructed, thanks to the generous funding of Farlington’s Parent Teacher Associa-
tion. Head of Curriculum and Choices David Walker-Smith said: “We are absolutely delighted with our new outdoor stage. “It’s great to be able to make the most of our beautiful 33 acres of parkland and give the pupils the opportunity to learn in the fresh air in the warm weather.” The performance area has been constructed using the latest eco-friendly, maintenance-free materials, so it is sure to be around for everyone’s enjoyment for many years to come.” Pictures at scenes from the opening.

Daring life of plant Focus on Charlotte’s photo talent hunters revealed Talented Charlotte
Bold plant hunters who endured tough treks for botanical science will feature in a talk at a popular garden. Gardener’s Question Time regular Matthew Biggs will host a talk entitled ‘In the Footsteps of the Plant Hunters’, about the extraordinary adventures of the great Victorian plant hunters who worked for nurseries and private collectors, including Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke, the current owner’s great grandfather. Their discoveries, often made under extreme hardship in primitive con-
ditions, transformed British gardening and many varieties still survive at Borde Hill, which will be pointed out during a guided walk and talk by Matthew. Borde Hill Garden, just outside Haywards Heath, is English Heritage Listed Grade II*, and was created in the 1890s by the current owner’s great grandfather and plant expedition sponsor, Colonel Stephenson R Clarke. This impressive estate boasts a botanically rich and nationally important collection of trees and shrubs and is regarded as one of England’s great gardens.

A student from Horsham has celebrated the completion of her BA (Hons) Photography degree by showcasing her work to the public. Horsham-based Charlotte Scally, 21, created a series of self-portraits in a personal exploration of the South Downs. The project, entitled ‘Sussex Born’, portrays Charlotte’s deep connection to where she was raised, as well as the insignificance of humankind in comparison with vast landscapes. “My project was heavily inspired by the poem ‘The Run of the Downs’ by Rudyard Kipling

My project was heavily inspired by the poem ‘The Run of the Downs’ by Rudyard Kipling am,” she says. “The final line of the poem ‘You be glad you are Sussex born!’ had so much of an influ-
ence on my project that I decided to title it as a homage to Kipling himself.” Charlotte has shown her work in a group exhibition called ‘Up the Downs’, held in the South Downs Heritage Centre in Hassocks, West Sussex.” Course leader Mandy Jandrell, of Solent University at Southampton, where Charlotte studied, said: “Our talented photography students have worked very hard over their time here, using our fantastic resources, to develop and refine their completely unique ways of working. This exhibition is a testament to how their individual creativity has been developed to a highly professional standard. We’re all very proud of what they have achieved and we’ll no doubt be seeing more of their unique work in future.” Charlotte said of her time at university: “I’ve really enjoyed being able to develop my skills in such a supportive environment - all of my tutors have continuously motivated me throughout my three years at Solent. “Working as an assistant editor on the third edition of Penta Prism and helping to raise money towards our degree show has also been a highlight. “The students on my course have been fantastic and the support we’ve given each other as peers has been crucial for us getting to where we are today.”

Students see how skills gap might be closed
Chairman says art exhibition is impressive NEARLY 150 artist are displaying their work at 104th exhibition of Sussex Artists at the Drill Hall in Horsham. The Sussex Association is one of the oldest in the county founded in 1928 by an aspiring artist, Mr J.T. McGaw and others living in the Horsham area. The final day of the exhibition is tomorrow. The association, now in its 88th year, has enjoyed an almost uninterrupted run of exhibitions since its inception, apart from two years during the Second World War. The Chairman of Horsham
Students from Horsham were among those who attended the Central Sussex College celebration of the launch of its new Information Technology Academy at its Crawley campus. The college believes the new centre will help solve the shortage of skills in some areas of industry. The celebration was a “handson” event for local employers, organisations and students with opportunities to try out equipment. The event marked the completion of a project that transformed the ground floor of an existing college building into a modern,
interactive learning environment complete with cutting-edge technology and software. VIPs and guests were invited to explore the range of opportunities that the IT Academy offers, from the development of digital and technological skills to meet local employer needs, through to the enhancement of specialist skills granting local students entry to employment, university and further study. Deputy CEO at the College Kim Morton, said: “The IT Academy and the Advanced Technology Centre are the beginning of our STEM vision and strategy for
the College in line with industry requirements. Using various partnerships we will endeavour to continue to deliver further developments such as these that will enable us to provide critical solutions to skills gaps seen within the local community and nationally”. Applications are still open for full time and part computing, IT and media courses at Central Sussex College’s Crawley campus. For more information and to apply, visit www.centralsussex.ac.uk/ apply or call 01293 442206. Scenes from the event are pictured.
District Council Cllr Christian Mitchell and Vice Chairman Cllr Roger Clark attended the opening of the exhibition. Mr Mitchell said: “Nearly 150 artists and crafts people have come together to show their work in a beautiful exhibition. The depth and variety of artistic skill is truly impressive.” The Exhibition hours are 10:30am -5:00pm. Pictured are left to right: Penny Clarke, Cllr Roger Clarke; Cllr Christian Mitchell and John Davies President of the Association of Sussex Artists with its chairman Derek Golledge.

Aurora Fireworks Very Proud To Win Plymouth Prize Air-conditioned The Aurora Team
Rob Byles, founder of Wisborough Green’s Aurora Fireworks is delighted at his company being a prize winner at the prestigious British Fireworks Championship in Plymouth. At their first entry in any competition– a remarkable achievement against very stiff
competition from fellow professionals exhibiting their skills in front of their peers and an estimated 200,000 crowd. Just to be selected to participate is in itself a major accolade, Rob telling the District Post: “To get second prize is amazing – beyond my wildest dreams when I started
off the company in 1985. There was an enormous buzz with many firework companies watching, so I’m proud as proud! The British Championship is our biggest and best competition and is universally recognised. For Aurora this was a team event, including my wife Paula, sons Steve and Jason and
Money, divorce and reality In the third and final article in the series, RB’s Family Law Team considers the cost of divorce and critically how to control your costs. Ultimately every client has it within their power to dramatically limit the financial impact and cost of a divorce. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of going through a divorce – here’s how to do it. Above all, don’t fall foul of the understandable temptation to be less than candid about what you are worth. The lawyers will get to the bottom of it and it will charge you to do this. In the ‘real world’, beyond TV Court room dramas, the question in dispute is not always about how the assets should be split. It is frequently about what those assets actually are. For the vast majority of people, they can forget arguments about who made the greater contribution to the marriage. The Court will expect it all to ‘go in the pot’. In the vast majority of cases, if both parties fully and frankly disclose their respective finances the costs of their divorces would plummet. How so? Whilst the Judge has a great deal of discretion, the reality is that there is a ‘starting point of a yardstick of equality’ in most divorce cases. The Courts will only depart from that said ‘yardstick’ if there is good reason to do so ie there are children preventing one party from working full-time. You do not pay a lawyer simply to tell you that you divide your assets 50/50. If only it were as simple as that. It is ensuring that there has been full and frank disclosure that costs. Only the parties can avoid that cost by being honest at the outset. It is simply a question of whether you want
to get to where you need to be for say £1,000 or for £10,000 and possibly more. Only the parties to divorce themselves can decide. What to do? The Courts have devised a very searching document that deals with disclosure known as ‘Form E’. However as both parties can fill this out themselves (with the help of their lawyers) they are presented with the prospect of completing this process for minimal cost. This then has to be compiled along with documentation in support which again, is a job solely for the client and therefore not an expense. If the above is not searching enough, then each party to a divorce has the right to raise questionnaires in respect of the Form E and the disclosed documentation. Typically either party can be compelled to explain every single transfer in their bank accounts of £500 or more. They are then required to confirm what this expenditure went towards and to provide documentary evidence in support. The same applies for assets that have been disposed of and the valuation of homes, investments, cars and personal possessions etc. By the time this process is concluded, the Courts will be able to work out to the nearest £5 what the parties are worth. How important is this rule about full and frank disclosure? Frankly – vital. Before any settlement is reached, you sign to state that you have filled out your Form E and the contents are true and wholly accurate. To knowingly make a false statement is a contempt of Court which ultimately carries the sanction of imprisonment. Some people are prepared to run such a risk – but your lawyer would advise against
it. Less dramatically, people who discover that their former spouse has lied about their wealth will be able to re-open those settlements at any point in the future. Thus, if you are ‘full and frank’ in your disclosure at the outset you could save yourself a considerable amount of legal cost. If it is as simple as that why don’t more people do it? Good question. Perhaps they don’t read articles like this? Or because the reality is that divorce itself is an inherently sensitive and unpleasant process. Human emotion is not meant to be rational and where a formerly loving relationship goes from being influenced by the tide of emotion to being dictated by ‘black letter law’ (literally Acts of Parliament), it may be unrealistic for people to suddenly be so regimented in their approach. Furthermore the old-fashioned approach to divorce was framed in the language of antagonism. Remember the Dustin Hoffman movie Kramer –v- Kramer (maybe not – it was 1979), but right at the outset it was him –v- her. Or was it her –v- him? It doesn’t matter, it was the language of conflict. Happily since then, if the Kramers were going through a divorce today they might choose Mediation or Collaborative Law and ‘work together’. Is it really possible to ‘work together’ when you are in reality ‘against each other’? Yes – if you adopt the right process. Just remove all the language of conflict and bear in mind that in many cases it is possible to emerge as friends. It is also vitally important where there are children and you will always be the parents of those children. Mediation and Collaborative Law
our terrific colleagues – everyone put in a huge effort, so a very big thank you to everybody involved.” This is the 21st year of the British Firework Championships and the event is staged on Plymouth Hoe, a natural amphitheatre affording spectators a variety of vantage points around the harbour and the Sound, the UK’s premier displays being accompanied by a fun fair, a music stage and a range of catering facilities. There is no question of Aurora resting on their laurels: immediately after the Plymouth show in addition to a local event they had displays in Berkshire, Essex, Kent and Wales ahead of firing at a music concert in London. And, they are already preparing some 60 displays on and either side of November 5, including, notably, return appearances at the County Cricket Ground, at Hove, in Billingshurst and at Horsham Cricket Club (where part of the Plymouth competition piece will be repeated). Will Aurora be entering the British Championships again? Rob says: “Yes – at some stage, but, right now we’re cracking on with our very busy programme of displays!”
are increasingly replacing the Court-based process that Meryl Streep dragged Dustin Hoffmann through, in the iconic movie. It simply doesn’t have to be like that anymore. For a guide on how to approach the possiblilty of divorce in a constructive and collabrotive way - see the on-line video at The

Southern construction firms must win the war for A-level talent, says RICS
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has stated that construction firms in the South of England must develop more training-based employment programmes for young people, if they are to attract the brightest A-level achievers – and help alleviate the skills epidemic in the industry. It has been predicted that the UK construction industry will create around 190,000 new jobs by the end of 2018, but there is a growing fear that there will not be the talent to fill them. Lynn Robinson, RICS Regional Director, South said: “We have to make it easier for young people to find

an appropriate route into the industry, whether that is through apprenticeships or degree-level qualifications. “Our research shows that if the skills epidemic doesn’t improve in the next three years, 27,000 planned buildings are at risk of not being built. If we’re to overcome this, we need to reduce the dropout rate from apprenticeships and other training courses by better linking them to the nature of the jobs that are likely to be available, along with relevant qualifications.” RICS – which sets standards in the land, property and construction sectors – is working
with a number of South East and South West firms, including BAM Construct, CBRE, Carillion, DTZ and Balfour Beatty, to develop a range of Trailblazer apprenticeships which will see apprentices (upon successful completion) gain vocational and academic qualifications. Sweett Group – a professional services provider for the construction and management of building and infrastructure projects – has won awards for its quantity surveying apprenticeship scheme, which has brought a young and diverse group of individuals into the business. James Grinnell, Group HR Director at Sweett Group, said: “Our quantity surveying apprenticeship programme enables us to work with local colleges and promote our industry to young people from all backgrounds. We currently have 25 apprentices, with a recruitment strategy aimed at accurately reflecting the diversity of the areas in which we operate.” When each apprentice joins Sweett Group, they work in a six month rotation in four of its five largest departments – including Commercial, Infrastructure and Public Sector. If you’re an employer interested in delivering a Trailblazer apprenticeship find out more at: www. apprenticeships.org.uk/standards

Horsham District Council launches the new 2016/17 Local Food and Drink Guide announcing the 14th annual Food and Drink Festival Marking the start of the 2016 Food and Drink Festival, the 2016/17 Local Food and Drink Guide is now available to residents, visitors and local businesses. Organised by Horsham District Council, the 14th annual Food and Drink festival launches this year on Saturday 3 September, with the
Big Nibble food celebration weekend, and will run for the whole month, throughout the district, until Sunday 2 October. Horsham district is abundant with fantastic locally produced food and drink and each year, since 2003, the council, working with many of our best food and drink businesses, celebrates this with its annual Food and Drink Guide and month long festival. The 2016/17 Local Food and Drink Guide is available now and promises to offer an abundance of opportunities for you to enjoy fantastic local produce, with details of local restaurants, pubs, local produce markets, farms and farm shops, producers and retailers, as well as the many events contributing to a month of festival flavours and gourmet delights. Your Local Food and Drink
Guide 2016/17 acts as a directory for food related businesses and should be kept close to hand throughout the year, as a helpful reference. The guide also features a whole host of special offers, discounts and events to tempt you into trying the district’s food delights. As a first this year, Henfield is hosting its own food festival called HenFood. Their festival will take place on Saturday 10 September and will involve a whole day of entertainment, markets and street food. Once again, this year the Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival runs in tandem with the wider district festival and you can find out more about this at www. steyningdistrictfooddrinkfestival. co.uk For further details about the

Mannings Heath and District Horticultural Society do it again at the Summer Show
Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com
DE TEMPS ANTAN Wednesday 14 September 7.30pm
The 2016 Summer Show, which took place at Mannings Heath Village Hall, last weekend, was a great success. Entries in all categories were up to 480 this year; the best ever and organisers were pleased to have new people entering in all sections, which they believe is encouraging for the future. After this year’s entries were displayed in their particular glory, the hall brimmed with colourful and exciting exhibits. Rumour has it that organisers had to work hard the night before, to make places for all the entries, but, eventually, everything fitted in well. The vegetable section entrants brought an excellent display of produce. Winner, Gordon Cooper, walked away with both cups in that category. The display of flowers and foliage was well presented and the cup winner in this category, was Dave Hilliam. The floral arrangements, which this year, experienced an increase in entries, were spectacular and represented the titles so well, with imaginative results. Nancy Hubbard took the prize. The men’s entry ‘flowers in a tankard’ also proved a popular choice. Handicrafts put on a good show of beautiful exhibits, with Jane Gregory and Jean Holder each winning a cup. This year, the Children’s section excelled with their painted pebbles, the best one winning the shield for Henry Perrodow. Other exhibits included colouring, models (made from recycling material) and deliciously decorated cakes. Every entry received a prize, as a reward for their efforts. As always, the photography section was well represented, with superb photos depicting the various titles, both fun and serious. Best photo went to Toni Bradnum for her exhibit in the “Nature up Close” category. The produce and cooking section was, as usual, full of mouthwatering food, from bread, savouries and cakes. Home made preserves are always popular and this year was no exception, with tasty marmalades, jams and chut-
ney. Delia Cooper took the prizes for both cookery and preserves. An ever popular class was the ‘Men only’ cookery class, which this year saw 11 entries for the Tea Bread. The winning title went to Chris Duffy. The prestigious Banksian Medal, for most prize money in the Horticultural Classes, went to Marion Neden. Best in show went to Delia Cooper, for her fantastic standard fuchsia. Judges commented on how professional and amazingly good the show was. Show Secretary, Dave Hilliam, said: “This was our best show ever, with so many
visitors enjoying the displays and the tea and cakes afterwards. A huge thank you goes to my hard working Committee and also to all those who exhibited and came to visit. Without you, our show would not have been the same. Let’s go for 500 exhibits next year!” The next talk by the Society will be on September 15 at 7.30pm, when John Negus is welcomed back to talk about ‘Wild about Flowers’. Jim Buttress will be visiting on November 10, to talk about his times in Central London’s Royal Parks. All are welcome to these events.

Maddie Hinch’s heroics Pulborough hit the help GB to gold in Rio top in BML League Maddie Hinch gave a superb display of top class goalkeeping
Olympic Hockey Dave Snith - Sports Editor West Chiltington’s Maddie Hinch put in a match winning performance in goal for the GB women’s hockey team as they overcame the world champions
Holland in a thrilling Olympic Final. Hinch’s attention to detail and preparation – she famously has a black book detailing the opposition’s penalty tactics - paid off as she saved four Dutch penalties before teammate Hollie
Webb scored the winning GB penalty to spark joyous celebrations from the team and the British supporters. Hinch is ranked as one of the top women’s hockey goalkeepers in the world and her class showed long before the penalty shootout as she pulled off save after save during the match to keep the dominant Dutch side at bay. Thanks to her display the Dutch were limited to three goals which were equalled by the GB team who twice came from behind with some good play on the break. With the match level at 3-3 it went down to penalties to decide the destination of the gold and silver medals and as Hinch saved four Dutch penalties teammates Helen RichardsonWalsh and Hollie Webb beat her Dutch counterpart to win the shootout 2-0. Hinch has played club hockey for Exmouth, Leicester and Holcombe and she clocked up her 100th international appearance while in Rio. Ironically she will now play for Dutch club SCHC in the 2016/17 season. Other Sussex interest in the gold medal winning team came from East Grinstead Hockey Club players, Sophie Bray and Laura Unsworth.

International Rugby Joe Launchbury has been appointed Wasps captain ahead of the 2016/17 season. The England lock, who is closing in on a century of appearances for Wasps, is entering his seventh season at Wasps, having joined from Worthing as
a 19-year-old, in 2009. He has gone on to win 35 caps for his country, in addition to the 91 appearances for his club. Wasps’ Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “Joe is a natural leader around the place and I think he has grown with the responsibility of being a leader and an international over the
been named captain and something I am very excited about. Wasps is a club I’ve been at for a number of years now and I’ve played under some great captains during that time, so I’ve learnt a lot from them, particularly most recently from Matt Mullan and James Haskell who have been two great captains for us. I know they will be a massive help to me over the next 12 months and it’s a role I’m really excited about. We have a squad packed full of talent so it’s now important we hit the season running.”
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC
With only Southbourne left to play in the Brookes Motors League, Pulborough now sit top of Division 1, with high hopes of remaining in the top spot after their home game on August 31. Just 1 point separates the 2 teams, but Pulborough will have the home advantage of playing on grass in the league decider. After promotion to the second division of the West Sussex Bowls League at the end of last season, Pulborough now look set to step up again in one of the two top spots on offer, alongside East Preston who still have
2 games to play. Of the 4 friendlies planned for this week, just 1 was played, due to lack of numbers at the rival clubs with the one game being Pulborough hosting Horsham Park for a game of 4 triples. Pulborough found themselves ahead by 21 shots by tea, despite the efforts of a good humoured Horsham side. With full stomachs, the Pulborough team set about maintaining their advantage, with the opposition closing on their heels. Pulborough finished with an impressive 83/54 clean sweep. With next year’s fixtures already settled, Pulborough will play Horsham Park in June and Aug 2017.
Spitfires fly high in Friday night league Bowls Keith Barraclough - Billingshurst BC Billingshurst 50 – 42 Pagham Continuing their defence of the Holbrook Cup, Billingshurst were drawn at home against Pagham. The hosts scored steadily and after 9 ends were leading by 13 shots. The visitors fought back but Billingshurst held on to claim victory, and a place in the final, by 8 shots. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Stan Morgan, Anita Colliety & Alan Readshaw (+6). The final at Stedham BC, on Saturday September 3
will pitch Billingshurst against Fishbourne. Ray Neal, Alan Knight & Betty Weller drew 15-15 Marion Clark, Barry Gilbert & John Bennett won 18-16 Stan Morgan, Anita Colliety & Alan Readshaw won 17-11 The final games in the internal Friday Night League took place with the winners this year being the “Spitfires” (Barry Gilbert, Roger Moore, Brian Richards, Gwen Delahaye and Ray Neal), who literally took off to beat “Lancasters”, “Hurricanes” and “Vulcans”.

All proceeds from the game are divided equally between the club’s chosen charities; Park’s charities being Sussex Air Ambulance and St Catherine’s Hospice and Horsham’s being RNLI and Macmillan Cancer Support. In some closely fought games Park were able to overcome last year’s defeat winning both at home and away. The combined home and
away final score was Park 178 to Horsham’s 134, a good 44 shot win. Park’s home teams were able to win on all 4 rinks and by 30 shots, 87 to 57. The home top rink honours were shared, both rinks winning by 11 shots. YM hit Selsey for six to progress in cup YM hit Selsey for six to progress in cup Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup Round 2 Horsham YMCA 6 – 1 Selsey Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA put division one side Selsey to the sword at Gorings Mead on Tuesday evening to progress to the third round of the Peter Bentley Cup with ease. The scene was set when YM took the lead virtually straight from the kick off with Max Howell scoring with under a minute of play on the clock. When Dean Wright made it 2-0 in the 7th minute a possible rugby score was on the cards however YM, despite having most of the possession,
could not add to their early goals and it was in fact Selsey who next found the net as Joe Manners pulled a goal back in the last minute of the first half. The Selsey goal seemed to jerk YM into a more ruthless second half approach and the goals came as a result of it. Howell scored his second of the match 5 minutes after the restart and Brad Curtis made it 4-1 on the hour mark. Two late goals – Nick Sullivan in the 81st minute and another goal from Curtis in the last minute ensured a comfortable win and progression to the next round. It’s back to league action on Saturday (August 27) for YM who travel to the coast to play Eastbourne United AFC who, like YM, have won both of their league games.

Horsham beat relegation threatened Billingshurst
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Heavy morning rain left the bowlers run ups very wet, reducing the game to a T20 contest, Billingshurst Chairman Jim Burroughs saying: “This has been such a difficult season for every club – it was so wet early on and so hot of late. Wickets are very dry on top, but with the high water table it’s wet below, producing some interesting tracks.” Horsham inserted Billingshurst and quickly dismissed the promising Tom Haynes, but after recovering to 71-2 a challenging total was suggested – until run outs accounted for both Thivanka Ratarante (26) and Andy Barr (38). Michael Thornely took 2-18 and Jonny Whiting, Michael Munday and Will Beer one each, Mike Burroughs making a rapid 23 not out. But,
Billingshurst’s 129 was unlikely to embarrass Horsham unless major inroads were quickly made. Billingshurst did take an early wicket, but Will Beer batted through for 54 and all of the other batsmen made useful contributions as Horsham eased home with 20 balls to spare, despite Tom Haynes’ 2-15 and Andy Barr and Max Hollander taking one apiece. For Horsham Jofra Archer hit 21, including 3 sixes in an eight ball cameo, telling the District Post: “The wicket was slow and turning, so I was happy not to bowl, but it was good to get a bat ahead of Horsham’s T20 final and my trip to Cardiff with Sussex.” Horsham, still fourth, tomorrow (Saturday) visit Roffey for an always hard fought local derby, while Billingshurst remain in the relegation zone with 184 points, 47 behind Brighton & Hove with just two games to play – tomorrow at East Grinstead before hosting Preston Nomads on the last Saturday of the season. Worthing (127) are already down.

Horsham’s miserable start to the season continued as they were well and truly beaten by Sevenoaks Town ending their involvement in the FA Cup for another season. Only two very late goals from Terry Dodd and Charlie Farmer gave some respectability to the score after the Hornets went in at half time 3-0 down which became 4-0 in the second period. Again it was defensive errors at the root of things when after 11 minutes Scott Harris played a poor pass which Joe Bingham ran onto easily outpacing the Horsham defence before opening the scoring. After gifting the early goal Horsham rallied and chances came, and went, for Terry Dodd, Lee Carney and Joe Shelley how-
ever the jittery looking Horsham defence was breached again on 41 minutes. Minutes after escaping some poor defending of a free kick Horsham failed to learn the lesson and were caught napping again, this time leaving Adam Marsh totally unmarked to head in at the far post . Another piece of erratic defending followed, this time from returning ‘keeper Josh Pelling, who recklessly raced off his line and bundled over Byron Walker. However Pelling made up for his carelessness by saving Edwards penalty. The relief for Horsham was short lived as inexplicably just a minute later Pelling had another rush of blood to the head and rushed out once again to bring down Walker in a repetition of his previous error. The referee showed some leniency with Pelling and spared him a second yellow but unlike last time Bingham gave him no chance from the spot. With the game effectively over
Horsham have another Kent trip this Saturday (August 20) as they travel to Hythe for a Ryman League fixture. The Garden of England is usually a fruitless venture for Horsham and with their defence as error strewn as it is, there is little hope for change.

the second half was a pretty tame affair and not even the strong wind at the Hornets backs could push them towards making inroads into the three goal deficit. Darren Boswell did hit a post but it was the home side who hit the net again when Harrison Carnegie followed up his own lob off the bar to find Yacine Gnahore, who simply made it 4-0. As the minutes ticked away another penalty was awarded, this time to Horsham, and Dodd stepped up for his first of the season. In injury time Farmer nodded in Dodds corner for a second Horsham goal, but it was all too little too late.
Broadbridge Heath eased through to the last 16 of the Peter Bentley Cup with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over fellow Premier Division side Wick. With the usual hectic schedule of games Heath manager Steve Painter chose to rest a
few players for the match which meant first starts of the season for Jamie Craven, Liam Hunter and Jamie Liddell with the latter grasping the opportunity with an impressive display. It was no surprise that it was Liddell who opened the scoring when he got on the end of a Jamie Robinson through ball on 16 minutes, took it around the fullback and drilled it into the top left corner from 25 yards. Heath doubled their lead 3 minutes later when a hand ball
in the penalty area allowed Tim Martin to step up to score from the spot. Heath were well on top and Andrade had a great chance to make it three when he was put through on goal by Piers McDermott but the Heath striker shot narrowly wide. The visitors were finding chances few and far between but should have pulled a goal back 10 minutes before the break when Andrew Weir blasted high over the bar from close range. Wick’s task became tougher when Charlie Williamson was shown a second yellow card followed immediately by a red after an altercation with Liddell. The match was over immediately from the restart when straight from the kick off Robinson advanced down the left before crossing into the path of Andrade who hit his first time shot over the advancing keeper into the net. Heath with the extra player and three goal lead controlled the remainder of the game and had most of the possession but the visitors did create some good chances on the break and forced debutant keeper Jamie Craven into a few good saves. Heath will now play AFC Uckfield in Round 3 after their 2-1 win at Hassocks.

90 run opening stand. Middleton were narrowly beaten in last year’s final and, barring unforeseen misfortune, will be promoted back into the Premier League after just one year at the lower level. And, they had eliminated East Grinstead in the Quarter Final and Roffey in the semi, so they are a force to be reckoned with. But, they had no answer to Horsham’s opening salvos with both bat and ball. Horsham won the toss and Man
Photo by Kevin Whiting of the Match Tom Johnson blasted a typically boisterous 32 ball 62, including 6 fours and 4 sixes and although Will Beer (26) was out without addition to the score and two further wickets fell, suddenly reducing them to 96-4 after a 200 total seemed likely, they recovered to set a demanding 162 run target thanks to a quick-fire 47 not out from Michael Thornely, taking his tally in the competition to 361, including an unbeaten century and a 98. At the half
way stage Sussex’s Chris Nash, former Horsham skipper, and presenter of the awards at the final told us: “Horsham have got plenty – they’re going to win this, I’m totally confident!” When Middleton replied much depended on their captain Sean Heather – previously on Sussex’s books – the day before he had taken 3-13 and scored 88 not out in a league T20 match, but after he was bowled by George Garton
for 1 the score crept to 23-3. Four players got double figure starts but, with the run rate soaring no serious challenge was mounted, Middleton finishing 53 adrift when the overs ran out. Jonny Whiting with 3-21 and Michael Munday (2-17) were Horsham’s most successful bowlers. Sean Heather said: “It was a tough ask but I thought we could do it – until Horsham bowled and fielded so well!” This is the 35th year of the competition and Horsham have now won it a record 13 times, knocking out Ifield, Bognor, Preston Nomads and Brighton & Hove on their way to this year’s final, Horsham Captain James Johnson – who had earlier held a spectacular one-handed catch - saying: “The wicket wasn’t as easy as Tom (Johnson) made it look and I thought we scored about 20 more than par. I’m so proud to have captained such a strong Horsham team: Jofra Archer and Tom Haines are great prospects for Sussex.” Brother Tom added: “T20 is my sort of game – I just love it. Batting with Will Beer helped me to concentrate - they bowled too straight and they had to go!”

Heavy rain had left standing water on Roffey’s ground but hard working groundsman Drew Smallwood and a dedicated team of helpers enabled a T20 contest. Put in, Worthing reached 50-2, Captain Matthew
Green going on to make 41, but only two other batsmen made double figures, George Fleming taking 3-17 and Liam Gibson 2-10 as the innings petered out at 101-8. dump Heath out of cup
Division 1 Mile Oak dump Heath out of cup SCFA RUR Cup Round 2 Broadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Mile Oak Football Andrew Crisp - BBH FCFootball Heath have done very well in this competition in recent years reaching the semi-final three times in the last four years but this season won’t be one of them after a home defeat to division one side Mile Oak. The visitors started the game well, showed a lot of pace going forward and tested Heath keeper Pawel Szelemey early on when Jack Stenning rifled a shot into the keeper’s midriff from 20 yards. Minutes later Jamie McKenzie advanced down the right flank got behind the Heath defence and crossed the ball into the path of Jack Arnold who powered a header from 8 yards into the net. Heath equalised from a Shaun Findlay corner in the 19th minute, 3 players went up for the ball at the far post but it was a Mile Oak defender who got the final touch steering it past his own keeper Aaron Stenning into the net. Just before the break Tiago Andrade broke away and picked out Liam
Hunter but the Heath midfielder’s first time shot lacked power and was gathered comfortably by Stenning. The visitors regained their lead 5 minutes into the restart when the impressive Remi Coates ran with the ball at his feet to the heart of the Heath defence and was brought down in the penalty area and got up to convert the resulting penalty. Midway through the half Szelemey was forced to make an excellent point blank save to deny the Oaks a third. In the last 10 minutes Heath got their act together Piers McDermott and Scott Weller both had shots from distance saved by Stenning and in injury time Jamal Sultan had a shot deflected into the side netting, Heath had two penalty appeals waved away and Stuart Chester fired just over. Painter was naturally disappointed with the result but said his team didn’t deserve to go through because they hadn’t created enough and their keeper did not have to make a save until the final minutes. Heath host Arundel at the Leisure Centre on Saturday (August 27) in a league fixture. Arundel have taken just one point from their opening two matches while Heath boasts a 100% record.
