The Sussex Wildlife Trust Nature Tots are back for more muddy fun and games across the county this September. Children aged 3-5 can connect with nature in the trust’s weekly sessions from 10am-noon as they explore the woodland with a range of hands-on bushcrafts including sawing, den building and making mud monsters in the trees. Childled achievable activities such as bridge building are designed to boost confidence, physical development and creativity. From squishing blackberries to autumn leaf collages and hedgehog hibernation, each week is themed around wildlife and the changing seasons, providing a
wonderful opportunity to learn from nature and perhaps develop a life-long love of the outdoors. Meeting regularly every week also provides an opportunity for Tots and their parents to make new friends. All children must be accompanied by an adult. For further information on dates and costs, and to book with your local group at Woods Mill, Henfield; Stanmer Park, Brighton; Chesworth Farm, Horsham, Tilgate Park, Crawley, Seven Sisters Country Park, Eastbourne, or on the beach at Pett Level in Rye bay, please visit: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/ naturetots

Henfield under threat says campaign group Henfield’s carefully prepared Neighbourhood Plan is under threat, say the Hands Off Henfield campaigners. The group says the builders looking to engulf the Sandgate Nursery site in houses have forced a judicial review of Henfield’s Neighbourhood Plan and the review is scheduled to be held on the 4th October. The group said: “Should the judgement be in favour of the developer this opens the real risk of many more inappropriate developments not just on the Sandgate Nursery site but on other greenfield sites around

A peep into Horsham’s home history Horsham’s Through the Keyhole exhibition will open the door on some of its most fascinating homes. One shop had more than a mile of cloth and another shop was Horsham’s first café and the owner had shares in a ship. Another building had geometric designed painted walls, whilst others have prehistoric seashore stuck on their roofs. Horsham Museum said: “Horsham’s homes have a rich and fascinating story and the new temporary exhibition Through the Keyhole opens the door onto the world of buildings and those who lived there. The exhibition celebrates the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking book by Dr Hughes Horsham Houses and also her new publication, Horsham Houses Revisited, published by the Friends of Horsham Museum. Although we have evidence of Mesolithic man, about 7000 years ago, living in the area and making flint tools, it is not until the Roman era, 200 AD, that we have firm evidence of actual buildings. Extensive pottery finds were found at Hills and, a hypocaust tile-making factory for Roman underfloor heating was discovered at Itchingfield. The exhibition will display some of these discoveries along with a rare medieval carpenter’s axe found in London, but
typical of those used to shape the wood. Archaeology might be seen as a study of things buried, but archaeologists can also look at standing buildings and work out their complex history. It is thanks to such work that Dr Hughes has discovered so many interesting aspects of Horsham’s houses which now feature in her new book. The exhibition will include portraits of Horsham houses, just as some had portraits of loved ones done, or of the beloved fat cow or plump pig - although homeowners may have had their homes painted out of pride, their beautiful homes may also have simply inspired artists to paint them. Along with these portraits, the museum will be displaying some of their 800 sale particulars dating back over 200 years together with photographs that span the decades. Thanks to the support of Rooney and Co estate agents, the museum also has some up-todate photographic views of the historic houses to complement the earlier portraits. The museum is grateful to Rooney and Co for supporting this exhibition and the new publication, Horsham Houses Revisited, which will become the book for the next generation of ‘Horshamites’. For some it will be the paraphernalia of houses that will prove fascinating, such as medieval keys and locks, early
18th century wallpaper, and from domestic water filters to mousetraps for dealing with infestations. Other items on display will be dead animals found behind brickwork, sometimes due to accidental death, but often purposefully put there for superstitious or spiritual purposes. One item remains a mystery: when Glayshers in Middle Street was removed to Weald and Downland museum a doll was found ‘buried’ under the floor boards along with other ‘toy’ items. This hairless doll ,which dates to around 1750, will feature in the display along with builders’ tools. Through the Keyhole is a month-long celebration of Horsham houses and the amazing work by Horsham resident Dr Annabel Hughes, who has spent over 30 years finding out about the hidden stories behind the façades. The new publication Horsham Houses Revisited explores the stories in far more depth than is possible in an exhibition - and what a story she reveals.” Dr Hughes will be signing copies of her book at Horsham Museum on Saturday 11 September 10am12pm. The exhibition opens on 10 September and runs until 8 October 2016. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Free admission. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org.
Lower speed limit call after horse accident A horse rider has appealed for speed limits to be lowered after a horse and rider were involved in an accident with a car. Carley Schooling believes some drivers might be driving too fast for the conditions in Faygate Lane, Rusper, and unable to avoid riders and horses. Carley and companion Kelly Simpson were riding in the lane last week wearing high visability jackets. But despite that precaution a car hit five-yearold cob Donny, which was being ridden by Carley’s companion. Carley, a dog groomer from Broadbridge Heath, said Kelly suffered has a chipped bone in her right foot and had jarred her back badly where she was hit. She said: “Donny’s x-rays came clear with no bone, ligament or tendon damage. He’s very sore and his pelvis area would have taken allot of the impact so he is being treated by a physio for that.” Carley said of the incident:
“We were about five minutes from home on the Faygate Lane and we were just approaching a small bridge where the road narrowed from two lanes into one, the road we were on was a long straight so cars approaching both ways could easily see us and we were both wearing Hi-Viz. The car struck Donny on his right hind and spun them both around in the impact which we believe saved them from much worse injury.’ The driver did stop and details were exchanged. Carley said: “We want drivers to be aware of the dangers in driving too fast around horses and stop treating Faygate Lane as a race track and have the limit lowered from 40mph to 30mph. “We have called West Sussex highways to ask for more Horse and Rider signs to be put up and also to discuss the speed of traffic that goes down that road as it’s used as a rat run. It’s a country lane and something needs to be done about it.”

Mike set to tackle new career Older people urged to The new recruits
Rugby player Mike Hartley will soon be tackling blazes and other incidents. Mike is one of 12 full-time firefighters welcomed into the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service after they successfully completed an intensive 14-week residential training course. Mike lives in Billingshurst and will be based at Worthing. Before joining the Fire Service he ran his own property maintenance business. He is also a member of our Retained Duty Section based at Billingshurst and plays rugby for Pulborough. The newly qualified community firefighters performed fire and
rescue drills at a pass out ceremony attended by their family, friends and dignitaries including the Chief Fire Officer of West Sussex and leading members of West Sussex County Council. Each recruit, who beat off competition from more than 700 applicants for their role, was presented with a certificate to mark the successful completion of their training course. There was also a special award for firefighter Mollie Bennett, who was presented with a silver axe for her outstanding performance throughout the course. The training is the first to be carried out in-house within West
Sussex and was largely based at a new state-of-the-art residential training centre at Horley Fire Station. The recruits learned all of the skills they need to begin their careers as firefighters, including core skills, technical and water rescue and breathing apparatus training. They are also the first in the county to successfully complete the new SEACamb Immediate Emergency Care Responder course. During their training they also took on an ambitious ladder climb and pole drop, raising more than £1,300 for the Fire Fighters Charity, The Golden Lion Children’s Trust and the Keep Connor Active appeal. They now enter the development phase of their careers on stations across West Sussex. Addressing the new recruits and their families West Sussex Chief Fire Officer Lee Neale said: “This is a really proud and important day for us. It is the first time West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has recruited full time firefighters for eight years and the first time we have ever trained them in-house. “I welcome you all to the Fire and Rescue family. I know you will all have fantastic careers – it is still the best job in the world so grasp it and enjoy it. You are the future of our service and I believe the service is in good hands.”
have shingles vaccine People in their 70s in Sussex and Surrey are being urged to protect themselves against shingles with a free vaccine. Local GP practices are writing to eligible patients to offer them the vaccination as part of the NHS shingles immunisation campaign for 2016-17which began this month. By the end of June 2016, just over half of all eligible older patients in Surrey and Sussex hadbeen vaccinated against shingles but the NHS is encouraging everyone who is offered the vaccine to take it up. Dr Max Kammerling, Head of the Public Health Screening and Immunisation team for Surrey and Sussex said: “As people get older their immune system naturally weakens which is why those aged 70 and over are more likely to get shingles. This can be very painful and debilitating and lead to long term health problems long after the initial rash caused by the condition has disappeared. It can also be fatal for around 1 in 1,000 over-70s who develop it. “I would encourage all eligible patients take up the offer from their GP surgery and
get vaccinated against the virus.” Shingles is a very itchy, painful, burning group of blisters caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox (varicellazoster) virus. The rash commonly affects one area of the body, often the chest, and can last up to four weeks. However for some people, pain can persist for several months, or even years, after the rash has disappeared (this is known as post herpetic neuralgia or PHN). The shingles vaccine will be routinely offered to patients aged 70 years and patients aged 78 years. In addition, patients who were eligible for immunisation in the first three years of the Programme, which began in September 2013, but have not yet been vaccinated against shingles remain eligible until their 80th birthday. These are patients aged 71 to 73 on September 1 2016 and patients aged 79 on September 1 2016. Those patients eligible for the vaccine should receive a letter from their GP surgery. The NHS encourages eligible patients to speak to their GP practice to arrange to be vaccinated.

Greg captures the stories behind the pictures How are they seen by others? And who are they really? Greg Turner explores these concepts in this small but fascinating photographic exhibition, where portraits of individuals are supplemented with their captivating backstories – for instance, the photograph of the man with the
alternative for cyclists and equestrians. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport John O’Brien said: “The path warranted much needed attention and Slinfold’s residents can be rest assured that the repairs will safeguard the route’s long-term resistance to heavy rainfall.” Improvements to the drainage system have already been made to reduce the chances of future flooding. Contractors will also deliver pothole repairs alongside the nearby caravan park. The contract has been funded by local developers’ contributions.

The stories behind the faces feature in an exhibition at Horsham. Street Portraits highlights the work of photographer Greg Turner at Horsham Museum. The museum said: “In this new world of social media and the ‘selfie’, sometimes it’s hard to know what we are looking at. When we see a photograph of a person, we often make immediate assumptions about the indi-
vidual that are sometimes right, but frequently wrong. Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum is pleased to host Street Portraits, a small exhibition by photographer Greg Turner. “A formal portrait of a stranger, approached in the street and persuaded to pose in a short moment, raises some interesting questions. How do they see themselves? How do they choose to present themselves?

Detours as £200,000 work starts on bridge New Stopham Bridge near Pulborough
Drivers face detours while £200,000 repairs are done to a busy bridge. They face detours while essential maintenance is done on the A283 New Stopham Bridge near Pulborough by West Sussex County Council. The council says that the bridge, which takes the A283 across the River Arun between Pulborough and Petworth, has started to deteriorate. Engineers decided that work needed to be done to waterproof the bridge. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport John O’Brien said: “We are replacing worn out components to preserve

The council will then close New Stopham Bridge for five consecutive weekends over the following dates: 8pm September 16 to 5am September 19; 8pm September 23 to 5am September 26; 8pm September 30 to 5am October 3; 8pm, October 7 to 5am October 10 and 8pm October 14 to 5am October 17. The bridge will re-open to traffic as normal in between each weekend. A signed diversion route via the A29 London Road and B2139 Tripp Hill will be in place during the weekend closures only. Two-way traffic lights on the A283 are required for five days after the final weekend closure. Work is expected to be completed by late October, subject to the weather. John added: “We have reduced disruption as far as possible by limiting the closures to weekends only. “We will manually control the 24-hour traffic lights operating before and after the weekend closures at peak times to speed up traffic. “The diversion route is also the shortest we could make it to minimise disruption.” Pedestrians will be able to cross the river using the adjacent Old Stopham bridge. A slice of history on offer
The public get a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the country’s most distinctive schools. They can also learn about the history of one of Britain’s oldest boarding schools in the country, Christ’s Hospital, by joining a Verrio tour. The tours provide an opportunity to see artwork, architecture and treasures that are not normally on view to the public. Tours are conducted by expert senior pupils wearing their distinctive Tudor uniform and visitors will also get to watch the Band Parade, one of the most remarkable of the school’s traditions. Verrio tours are named after the huge 26.5m long painting by Antonio Verrio which dominates the dining hall and depicts the foundation of the Royal Mathematical School by King Charles II in 1673. At the start of the tour, your attention will be drawn to the 19th Century red brick water tower that is seen from miles around. The points contribute to each employer’s overall score, shown on a national league table. National Cycle to Work Day is next Wednesday. The aim is to encourage over one million UK citizens to regularly cycle to work by 2021. Figures from the last census show 741,000 do this already. To take part, visit www.cy-
cletoworkday.org and pledge to cycle to work on September 14. New bikes, cycling accessories, a spa experience, and a hot air balloon ride for two are among prizes up for grabs. The West Sussex Cycle Journey Planner is also available to help cyclists plan their journeys. The online tool calculates routes for journeys by car, bus, rail, bike and foot. It displays expected journey times, carbon savings, and the number of calories burned. Visit www.travelwestsussex. co.uk

Knepp will host big day for fund raisers Knepp
Historic Knepp Castle will host an event to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. The New Horizons Appeal, run in aid of the Crawley-based hospice, is organising the annual Autumn Gift Fair. Once again the fair, which is sponsored by developers Crest Nicholson, will be held in the stunning grounds of Knepp, and will be launched with an exclusive preview evening on September 21 before an all-day fair on September 22. The boutique style preview evening offers ticket holders an exclusive opportunity to browse
beautiful and unique stalls ahead of the main fair, whilst
Each stall provides a percentage of their takings as a donation to the hospice enjoying a glass of bubbly and canapés. Preview ticket holders can also return to the fair free the following day. With more than 70 carefully selected, high quality stalls, or-
ganisers say the Autumn Gift Fair offers visitors an unrivalled shopping experience. It will offer everything from fashion wear, gifts, home wares, children’s items, and local produce at reasonable prices, for all ages under one roof. To date, the Appeal has raised more than £2.5 million for the local charity. Suzanne Connor, New Horizon’s Appeal Co-ordinator at St Catherine’s, said: “We are really looking forward to this year’s Autumn Gift Fair. “Each stall provides a percentage of their takings as a donation to the hospice, so why not come along to enjoy a fabulous lunch with friends and purchase some exclusive goods whilst raising money for a fantastic cause? There’s no better reason to shop.” Tickets for the preview evening, which takes place from 6.30pm 9pm cost £15. Tickets for the main fair day, which is open from 9.30am - 4pm cost £5. Tickets can be purchased online at: www.stch.org.uk/NewHorizons and will also be available on the day. Knepp Castle is nowadays the name used for the mansion built in the early 1800s by Sir Charles Burrell, but it is also the name of a former medieval castle that had mostly been destroyed by the early 1700s, although there are some remains.

Animal sanctuary appeals for more sponsors

cheryl@abcanimalsanctuary. co.uk for more details. The ABC Animal Sanctuary is run solely on fund raising and donations, please help if you can. Thank you.” Some of the residents’ table manners, or lack of them, are shown on this page.

Local Halifax gives extra The Staff at Halifax in Horsham has shown their involvement within the community by supporting the “Springboard Project” The Springboard Project is a centre that’s experienced a funding cut, yet so many local children still use its facilities. With specially adapted rooms for children with learning difficulties and disabilities, it’s an ideal place for children, of all ages, to learn, play and develop their social skills. Karen Grimes, Halifax Assistant Manager, decided to work in partnership with the centre, which was in need of a makeover in some areas. Great negotiating skills of Mandy Kasalo (one of Karen’s staff members) ensured the project received a massive discount from ‘Brewers’, who supplied the paint for the team. Organisers said: “With 10

members of staff attending on Sunday the 21st (of August), we managed to decorate the inside of the lift, paint and add transfers to the downstairs WC, paint the railings outside in bright colours, paint some benches in the garden and most importantly painted the landing through to the dark room in Star Wars transfers. “Steve Spikesman, a local painter and decorator, offered his free services to contribute in making the day a success. It was a day well spent in team building for us and feeling the sense of pride in making a difference to so many young children.” In a message to Karen, the manager at Springboard said: “What can I say!!? I have just arrived at springboard and I LOVE everything sooo much! It’s amazing!! Especially the personalised yoda sign!!! I can’t thank you enough!!!!”
Hearing Health in Horsham
Your third annual Hear-Here! Information Day Do you have trouble hearing the television? Listening to music? Do you find people mumble? Do you work in a noisy environment? A unique opportunity to learn more about your hearing and the help available is being organised in Horsham on the 15th September. It is designed to raise awareness on all hearing related health issues and emphasise the need for hearing preservation, hearing loss prevention and hearing correction. Including best methods for wax removal and how to look after your ears by not poking anything in them! According to the Action for Hearing Loss, around 9 million people are hearing impaired in the UK and this figure is likely to rise. However, many people are
reluctant to wear hearing aids due to not wanting to draw attention to a problem often associated with ageing. As a result less than 2.5 million people wear a hearing aid and enjoy the benefits of better hearing. That is why South East Hearing Care Centres, your local independent hearing healthcare experts are hosting the first ever Hear-Here! Information day on the 15th September at Park Barn, North Street, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 1RL. (near the band stand) Our chosen charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People will also have a stand so you will be able to meet one of these highly trained hearing dogs and their owner. As there will be four of the world’s leading hearing aid manufacturers present, what you can expect on the day are demonstrations of the latest technology, video-otoscopy, where a tiny

Well it’s been a blinding summer alright, and the hot weather has been a joy to behold; long may it continue. However, now it’s a time for getting the kids back to school and returning from the world of summer dreams... hot weather or not! As ever, at this time of year, Barnstormers Comedy will be on hand to counter the inevitable feelings of comedown, as they progress towards the mellow fruitfulness of the autumn. And there’s a great line-up in prospect for September’s show at the Capitol for that precise purpose. Once more, three top circuit acts will be gracing the Capitol stage, with freewheeling resident Barnstormers’ host, Kevin Precious, returning to oversee the proceedings. This month’s performances include: the charismatic story telling skills of Jason Patterson, “Absolutely sounds the part... oozes confidence, with a perfectly measured delivery that gives him instant authority.” - Chortle; the rapidly rising star that is Larry Dean ‘’The audience lap up his cheeky-chappie shtick... here’s to a generation
of new Billy Connollys’’ - The Guardian; and the one-liners and interactive style of Kevin McCarthy, ‘’The Ad-Lib Expert’’ - The Stage. Jason Patterson is an Award Winning Comedian who started out in comedy in 2006. In 2010, Jason Starred in a new comedy sketch show for Brown Eyed Boy which aired on BBC3. Jason was also a runner up in the CDN/Channel 4 Stand Up Search 2010. Also in 2010, Jason won the Loaded Laftas Rising Star Comedy Award. 2012 brought more TV credits for Jason with several scenes in Channel 5’s Interview of a Lifetime. He regularly performs at: Jongleurs, The Comedy Store, Amused Moose, Hackney Empire, The Astoria (West End) and Laughter Fest at the Camden Centre (alongside 9 other acts including Richard Blackwood, Quincy and Robbie Gee). Since being crowned Scottish Comedian Of The Year at just 23, Larry Dean’s star has continued to rise and rise, with his debut Edinburgh Fringe show Out Now! receiving widespread critical and
audience acclaim, as well as a Fosters Comedy Award nomination for Best Newcomer. Following his success in Edinburgh, Larry brought the show to London in January 2016, for a series of packed out performances at The Soho Theatre, and then on to the Melbourne Comedy Festival, where he was one of the standout performers on the Allstars Supershow Opening Night Gala. He returned to Edinburgh this year with his eagerly awaited new show, Farcissist. 2016 has seen Larry star on Live From The BBC on BBC2, having already appeared twice on BBC Presents: Best Of The Edinburgh Festival. He’s also performed alongside some of the biggest names in UK comedy, having supported the likes of Eddie Izzard on tour and performed twice at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, in 2014 and 2015. “The audience lap up his cheeky-chappie shtick...here’s to a generation of new Billy Connollys” - The Guardian “Dean is Unmissable” - Edinburgh Festivals Magazine “A Total Triumph of a Show” Fringemonkey “Sharp and unexpected Lines... an irresistable chutzpah” Chortle “Fascinatingly funny” - Evening Standard “The amiable Glaswegian is such a natural storyteller and entertainer” – one4review “One of the best shows I have seen this year” - Mumble Comedy Kevin McCarthy has been a comedian a long while, all his life infact. But only in the late eighties did he make it his career. He started purely by accident, getting on stage as an open spot at the infamous “Tunnel Club” in
South East London, purely to win a dare. A truck driver at the time with his own business, comedy became a hobby until the trucking had to go and he became a full time comedian. His career to date has covered the full gambit of the comedy world, indeed the world at large, working in such far flung places as South America, North America, the Caribbean, Europe, The Middle East, even Afghanistan. He has entertained all-comers kids, troops, Hells Angels, audiences from 10 to 45,000. He not only performs on, but also writes for television, having been involved recently in writing “The Sketch Show”, the BAFTA award winning ITV comedy, and has appeared on many television productions as a comedian, a comic actor, and indeed as a straight actor. His involvement with T.V. includes warm-up duties on such shows as “The Lottery”, and “Later, with Jools Holland”. He writes speeches for the management of such corporate giants as Coca Cola and provides corporate comedy work-shops for institutions such as them; even teaching prisoners in Winchester prison, from novice to performer, in organised courses in prison. Kevin’s reputation as a funny and importantly reliable act, is acknowledged throughout the business both as a stand up comedy set performer and, perhaps more highly still, as a compere/ M.C. His experience and ability to connect to any audience is almost legendary. When it comes to any aspect of the comedy business he delivers, and delivers to an exceptionally high level. Foot-Stomping folk from De Temps Antan It takes a special blend of musical flair to create memorable songs of yesteryear! Songs with a hint of contemporary - dosed with uncontrolled laughter, deep-rooted couplets and sudden, impromptu shifts that speak to familiar rhythms of the past - you can see the fantastic folk group De Temps Antan at The Capitol on September 14 at 7.30pm. Formed at a time when all three were members of La Bottine Souriante, Éric Beaudry, André Brunet and Pierre-Luc Dupuis have been exploring and performing time-honoured melodies from the stomping grounds of Quebec’s musical past, since 2003. Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica, guitar, bouzouki and a number of other instruments, these three virtuosos blend boundless energy with the unmissable ‘joie de vivre’ found only in traditional Quebec music. Éric Beaudry was raised by a family entrenched in music and began singing and playing guitar at the age of 10. In 1992, he unleashed his musical ambitions on local audiences by founding La Galvaude, followed-up later by Ni Sarpe Ni Branche and Norouet. Éric’s passion for music
also helped foster an interest in song, which led to several awards, including a 2002 Prix Mnémo for his role in producing the album Musique gaspésienne, featuring violinist Édouard Richard. In 2003, hot on the heels of this success, Éric became a member of La Bottine Souriante. Éric’s love of music also spurred a passion for enlightening others and, following the completion of a Bachelor of Arts in pop guitar and jazz, Éric began teaching traditional music at Joliette’s CEGEP régional de Lanaudière in 2002. Wherever he performs, Éric’s rich vocal range and unquestionable talent on stringed instruments - guitar, mandolin and bouzouki - guarantee a rousing performance for all. André Brunet was also drawn to music at a very young age. It was his parents who first noticed his keen interest in music and encouraged him to follow his passion. André’s first love was for the violin and, at the age of nine, he began taking lessons. Along with his brother Réjean, he created Les Frères Brunet and went on to record several albums and perform at various concerts around the world. In 1997, André’s unwavering energy and refined style
earned him a spot with La Bottine Souriante, with whom he toured more than 15 countries over the course of 10 years. Although his journey with La Bottine Souriante came to an end in 2006, André remained immersed in traditional music. Also, André participated in the Opening Ceremony of the XXIe Olympic Winter Games 2010 Vancouver British Columbia in Canada. Although Pierre-Luc Dupuis began singing with his family at a very young age, he was somewhat of a late musical bloomer, taking up the accordion at 18! But what he lacked in experience, he made up for in determination. At 19, he founded Les Langues Fourchures, with whom he recorded his first album in 2001. For the next 4 years, he helped the band pay its dues and make its mark throughout Quebec and, in 2003, he joined La Bottine Souriante, one of the province’s best-known music groups. Since then, he’s wowed audiences from Dublin to Porto and Budapest to Melbourne with his unique humour and warmhearted charisma. Tickets: £10, are available from The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 or on-line: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

UK bungalow shortage being tackled by Rydon Homes
A recent survey found that roughly 2.85 million over 55’s would like to downsize, with half of them identifying bungalows as their property of choice. However, due to the drastic shortage of bungalows, this could continue to be an unachievable aim. Over the past 3 years, the number of bungalows being built each year has tumbled by 90%, and made up just 2% of new homes built last year (a mere 63 in total were classed as bungalows). This is down from a huge 1 in 6 in the

There is a little known but worrying issue of a shortage of bungalows in the UK. Unfortunately, many people are missing out on their desire for singlestorey living because, at the moment, bungalows are few and far between. But housebuilder Rydon Homes are hitting back at the shortage with their Hurstpierpoint scheme, Laytonfields, which will comprise of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, including 3 bungalows.

1980s. Clearly there is demand, and Rydon Homes have put their foot forward to meet it. Laytonfields is their new development based in the village of Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, and nestled next to the South Downs National Park. Accompanying this setting is a welcoming community and a favourable countryside lifestyle. The bungalows themselves are just as impressive, with an exciting use of glass to compliment
the open plan living areas. High vaulted ceilings along with large rooms help to break the common perception that bungalows are short on space. All have 3 bedrooms, triple aspect living/dining rooms, a double garage and parking for ultimate convenience. A launch is being held this September to allow guests to learn more about the what these contemporary bungalows will offer. Sue Fry of Clifford Dan comments, “We are proud to be able to open up opportunities for people with these bungalows. We have received a great deal of interest already, so I urge people to register their interest as soon as possible because these bungalows will be snatched up fast - one has already been reserved!” Rydon Homes are positive that Laytonfields will be happily welcomed into the West Sussex property market thanks to the range of house types and large audience who will be catered for - much needed in the current climate of housing undersupply. The highly sought-after area of West Sussex and the pretty town of Hurstpierpoint will be another draw, with all the local amenities one could need on their doorstep, along with much more. Guide prices for the bungalows are from £715,000. For more information and to register your interest in the upcoming launch in September, contact agents Clifford Dann on 01273 407901.

Reckless Nasr forces Jolyon Palmer to retire Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer and his Renault Sport Formula 1 team experienced another incident strewn race at the Italian Grand Prix; held at the famous Monza circuit. After making up a number of places from his lowly twentieth place on the starting grid, Palmer
was forced to retire from the race on lap 7 after Sauber driver Felipe Nasr made contact with his car on the first lap. Nasr was subsequently penalised for his driving but that was little consolation to the once again unfortunate Southwater driver Palmer. Palmer’s teammate Kevin Magnussen also made up ground and finished in seventeenth position from 21on the grid.

A disappointed Jolyon Palmer said “I had a really good start and made a lot of positions. I was alongside Nasr through turn one with no problem then he decided to run me off the road in turn two. I can’t explain why he did that or imagine what he was thinking. For me I feel I’m driving better than ever and I’m hopeful that will show in Singapore.”

Bowls Round Up Billingshurst’s John Bennett and Captain Barry Gilbert confer during Holbrook Final
Horsham Men’s Champion Graham Duvergier (left) & runner up Doug Whetstone Pulborough BC The final Brookes Motors League game for Pulborough took place
against Southbourne where a win would see them as champions of division 1. Pulborough claimed all 6 points and the title with wins from Skip Paul Day and team 19/17 and John Brown and team who won 25/17. Organised by Club President, Malcolm Gray and Secretary, Jane Gray the annual President’s Day game where 6 teams compete for the trophy was won by Steve Adsett, Paul Day and Pauline Adsett with a total score of 27 shots after 20 ends. In other matches Pulborough beat the Sussex Vice President’s 117/106 and in a friendly against Worthing Beech House they won 69/55. Before next week’s club finals weekend the annual President Vs Captain challenge match took place with the President’s side coming out winners, 60/47. Billingshurst BC The Final of the Holbrook Cup
saw holders Billingshurst against Fishbourne. ‘Hurst got off to a flying start and after just 5 ends they were 15 shots in the lead. The next 5 ends swung towards Fishbourne who narrowed the gap to 5. The pendulum continued to swing in favour of ‘Bourne and Billingshurst could not catch Fishbourne who won by 21 shots, 37/58, denying Billingshurst their 11th Holbrook Cup victory. Billingshurst found the green difficult when visiting Southwick. Even after tea the visitors could do little to correct things and a Billingshurst whitewash was prevented by way of Eddie Stevenson, Beryl Barraclough and Alan Readshaw salvaging a 15-15 draw in an overall score of 47/80. Horsham Park BC Horsham Park kept up their winning run by beating Crawley Town 68 to 59. Park won 2 rinks, drew 1 and lost 1. Park’s top rink went to skip David James with Angela Spurr and Beryl Noble who won by 14 shots. Park’s other winning rink skipped by Bryony Wood with Robin Peters and John Leadbeater won by 4 shots, 14 to 10. Brenda Thompson’s team had a nail biting conclusion to their game coming from 10 shots to 19 down to eventually draw 20 shots all. Horsham BC Horsham held their finals weekend with the two main trophies, the Ladies and Mens Singles going to Lesley Grogan who beat Fran Baillie 21 – 19 and Graham Duvergier who beat Doug Whetstone 21 – 14 respectively. Ali Hilton Childs and Barbara Meyer won the Ladies Pairs and Ray Knight and Barry Baillie won the men’s. Other winners over the weekend were: Lesley Grogan, Robbie Calder, Stuart King, Robbie Calder & Kelly McCartney, Doug Whetstone and Neil Potter.

Billingshurst finish with sad defeat Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 117 All Out (31.1 overs) Preston Nomads 1212 (22.0 overs) Preston Nomads won by 8 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Already relegated Billingshurst’s difficult second season in the Premier League ended with a heavy home defeat against former league powerhouse and six time winners of the league between 2006 and 2013, Preston Nomads. Despite their frailty with the bat Billingshurst took the positive decision to take first knock after winning the toss but soon found themselves 10-2. Things improved with Stuart Barber making 26 and Scott Stratton 19, and at 76-3 there was hope that a challenging total would be set. Jay Hartard subsequently topscored with 33 and Sussex’s Abidene Sakande got to double figures along with Awais Malik, but wickets fell all too regularly, Kashim Ibrahim
returning a devastating 5-8 in 11 overs with six maidens. Billingshurst’s 117 gave their useful bowling attack and resolute fielders nothing to defend, Nomads winning in just 22 overs courtesy of an unbeaten 53 by Stuart Faith. Last season Billingshurst won seven matches, but this year only three, all at home. But, they have excellent facilities, pleasant members and officials and the nucleus of a decent side and, having worked hard to get into the Premier League, will be looking to bounce straight back next season. To do that they will need to re-sign their Sri Lankan star all-rounder Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi and bolster the batting. If that happens then, if they can retain their main players with consistent availability, and obtain help and support from Sussex – who have said that they want Billingshurst to be in the top echelon – then Premier League cricket could well make a welcome return to Jubilee Fields. Meanwhile, Billingshurst 2nd XI finished as champions of their league.
Horsham win however finish fourth after promising better Sussex Premier League East Grinstead 198-6 declared (30 overs) Horsham 200-8 (29.4 overs) Horsham won by 2 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s mercurial season ended with a win against visitors East Grinstead after the captains reached a gentlemen’s agreement to play a 30 over game to produce a positive result before the forecast rain. After Grinstead won the toss and elected to bat Jamie Thornely (2-48) promptly removed former Sussex player Will Adkin but, despite opening bowling partner Sam Bell’s 3-26, a challenging 198-6 was reached thanks to

an unbeaten century from Toby Margetts, 43 from wicket keeper Timothy Cummins
and 30 from Benjamin Davies. In reply Horsham created a sound platform with a first wicket 49 and at 126-2 were well placed to win the game – played in the best spirit which they did with two balls and two wickets to spare, riding out a mid innings wobble, Adkin taking 3-9 in his two overs. Will Beer made 44 but again the batting prize went to former captain Craig Gallagher, whose 86 took his seasonal league tally to 603 runs, Craig telling the District Post: “I’ve enjoyed a good season, although it wasn’t quite up to my 2010 standard! I’ve had a bit of a quiet spell recently, so it was good to finish on a high despite being slightly disappointed not to notch up a ton!” Leading league wicket taker Michael Munday, with 62 victims, was unable to play after sustaining a hand injury fielding in the Roffey game, but, promisingly, fellow leg spinner 16 year old Sam Bushby made his first team debut. Horsham won the Sussex T20 Cup for a record 13th time but will be disappointed with another frustrating league season having been top of the table for nine consecutive weeks, at one stage 45 points clear, only to finish fourth following debacles against both Brighton & Hove and Roffey.

And, local derby, there is no doubting Tom’s player incourage – on his home juries debut for Horsham he made 50 as a 15 year old against Preston Nomads facing unrelenting Sussex quick James Anyon. Sussex debutant, Horsham’s Tom Haines Tom’s medium paced bowling
was also called upon in the Kent game and speaking to the District Post at Hove he said: “The wicket was doing a bit and I was told I was opening the innings. I was a bit nervous on the first day, but it was good batting with Chris Nash in our second innings, he helped me a lot. It was a brilliant experience so even if I don’t play in Sussex’s remaining games this season it won’t matter.” Tom goes to South Africa with the Sussex Academy in November, and, having played for England at U17 level, possibly to Dubai with England U19s. He follows a long line of Horsham players playing for Sussex, Nash, Robin Martin-Jenkins and Will Beer being recent examples. Horsham Cricket Club Chairman Richard Marshall told us: “I’m absolutely delighted for Tom – very best of luck to him! He comes from a proper cricket family: his dad Mark captains our thirds and Tom’s brothers Harry, Ollie and Alfie are keen cricketers too.”
YM made to work hard by rock bottom Hailsham SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 4 – 1 Hailsham Town Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor After losing the last two matches YM needed a result and with the visit of rock bottom and pointless Hailsham Town the opportunity was there to be taken and Peter Buckland’s team did not disappoint, finishing with a comfortable 4-1 victory. Looking to take advantage of their lowly opponents YM attacked from the kick off and after 8 minutes of constant pressure Brad Curtis gave them the lead. Then on 17 minutes, and against the run of play, some poor defensive work from YM resulted in a shock equaliser, scored by Rhys Anderson. The goal seemed to blunt YM somewhat and it was not until

Former Hornets player Billy Dunn showed all from his old club that he has not forgotten his goal scoring touch with two decisive first half goals. Although Terry Dodd pulled a goal back in the second half the sending off of defender Matt Whitehead with 15 minutes to go put paid to Horsham building on their previous first win of the season against Lewes. The early exchanges were even with both sides having chances to break the deadlock. As the match progressed it was the home team who took a firmer grip on things and after a spell of sustained pres-

Horsham defender unceremoniously dragged Hoban to the ground to earn a yellow card. For Horsham it was last year’s top scorer Terry Dodd who looked the most likely to get his team back into the match with the striker having two decent attempts on home ‘keeper Matt Pierson’s goal. With 20 minutes remaining Dodd eventually got the goal that he had been threatening when he took advantage of Pierson’s poor positioning to find the net from over 30 yards out. Any hope of a comeback was snuffed out 5 minutes later when again Whitehead was outpaced by Hoban and the Horsham man’s late lunge resulted in a second yellow and the Hornets were forced into a 10 man reshuffle to see out the rest of the match. The win put Tooting & Mitcham to top spot in the table while Horsham will be looking to quickly build on the 4 points they have collected so far.
3 minutes before the break that they scored again, Dave Brown getting on the end of a Dan Evans cross. It still took a double save from YM ‘keeper Lewis Blaney on the stroke of half time to prevent Town once again drawing level. The second half saw both sides struggling to create anything worthwhile and it was not until the 77th minute that a piece of individual skill from substitute Phil Johnson gave YM a 2 goal buffer. Six minutes later Max Howell wrapped things up with the fourth goal to give YM a comfortable but laboured victory that was summed up by manager Buckland’s comment of “an average day at the office from us, if I’m honest. I thought we made quite hard work of the win. I was never in doubt that we were going to pick up the three points, but we made hard work of it.”
Heath defeat league favourites Haywards Heath SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 0 Haywards Heath Town Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Manager Steve Painter was looking for an immediate response to the defeat at Crawley Down Gatwick and his players didn’t disappoint him as they took all 3 points from early pacesetters and favourites for the league title, Haywards Heath Town. The visitors arrived at the Leisure Centre with an impressive 100%, 14 goals for and 1 against record in their first 4 games. ‘Keeper Michael Chester returned from injury but through injuries Painter was without Ollie Moore, Jake Holmes, Tim Martin and Scott Weller. After a quick start from Heath Marlon Maxwell had a header saved by visiting ‘keeper Nick Taylor but the inform Town soon came back into the game playing some good possession football without troubling Chester. Heath had a good shout for a penalty turned away before breaking the deadlock 6 minutes before the break. A long Piers McDermott throw was cleared out to Liam Hunter who smashed a left foot shot through a crowded penalty area that fell to Tiago Andrade. The Heath striker, despite being closely marked, lifted the ball over everyone including ‘keeper Taylor to give Heath a 1-0 lead at half time. Straight from the restart Town’s Naim Rouane had a header superbly saved by Chester but from then on the game resumed the pattern of the first half with the visitors having a lot of the possession but failing to worry Chester. Late chances for Heath fell to Jamal Sultan, Shaun Findlay and Jamie Liddell but at the final whistle Andrade’s solitary goal proved decisive. Heath’s good start to the season sees them up to fourth place with 4 wins from their 5 games.

Roffey Champions again – three in a row! Roffey celebrate with a well-deserved beer
Photo by Natalie Jagota Saturday September 3 - Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 92 All Out (38.3 overs) Roffey 93-7 (29.1 overs) Roffey won by 7 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey went to Brighton needing eight points to retain the Premier League championship and by 1.25pm they had the job done, without even having to bat. Another clinical bowling and fielding display clinched Roffey’s hat trick of titles – a feat only equalled twice in the 46 year history of the league (Chichester doing it in the 90s and Preston Nomads more recently). Teams promoted into the Premier League often go straight back down never to reappear, making Roffey’s outstanding success all the more remarkable – they came into the league in 2011, quickly establishing and consolidating themselves before surprising better known teams with the 2014 title. That was dismissed as a one off, but then they did it again last year by an even bigger margin, and now the hat trick. Beaming Roffey President Mick Webb told the District Post: “An amazing achievement! Doing it once just three years after coming into the league was brilliant, so I’m a very happy President!” Chairman Mark Hamilton said: “Fantastic – I’m pinching myself to believe it! But,
we deserve it – we’ve won more games than anyone else – again!” At Brighton the home team elected to bat, pleasing Roffey because they prefer to contain the opposition and then knock off the runs and their winning formula worked again. Brighton got to 34-1 but then had no answer to Luke Barnard. Supported by outstanding catching, he extracted lift and turn from the much used dry and cracked
An amazing achievement! Doing it once just three years after coming into the league was brilliant wicket to finish with 5-16 from 13 overs and a seasonal aggregate of 51 wickets, the third highest league haul. Elsewhere, Cuckfield, the only team able to overhaul Roffey, were skittling hapless Worthing but that mattered not as Brighton capitulated to 92 all out. There was an understandably cavalier feel to Roffey’s reply until they steadied the ship before the Fleming brothers came together
with another of their match winning partnerships. Along the way there were close games, which Roffey fought hard to win. They lost just twice all season, their consistency, regular availability of players, committed practice, camaraderie and exceptional support - home and away – was the recipe for success. All of the players have contributed, but special mention is due for George Fleming’s nagging medium pace accuracy, producing 45 wickets, Rohit Jagota’s 808 runs, averaging over 80 with three hundreds and four 50s – and his 21 wickets, Theo Rivers’ 572 runs, Leigh Harrison’s tight bowling and 14 catches, mostly one handed diving spectaculars, and Usman Khan’s exhilarating batting cameos. Roffey won the Mirfield Cup for a record 16th time, got to the semi-final of the Sussex T20 Cup and were again the last Sussex team left in the National KO Cup. Players comments on the season - Rohit Jagota: “In mid-June we were 54 points behind leaders Horsham, so to win it from there was very special”, Theo Rivers: “It’s been a pleasure to play in this team – our team spirit has got us through some tight situations”, Luke Barnard: “The last season I played for Roffey was when we won promotion, so to come back and win the league is really great”, Liam Gibson: “Coming here from Sydney as the overseas to play with these guys has been a great experience and winning the league is the icing on the cake!” Speaking for the supporters, Rohit’s wife Natalie commented: “Absolutely thrilling – wonderful to see the players coming up through the ranks to win the league again!” Captain Matt Davies summed up with: “I was apprehensive taking over after we’d won two titles but I knew we’d have a similar squad and this is a great club to captain, we’re all good mates and everyone wants us to do well. We’ve had loads of good moments but walloping Horsham at home in front of a big crowd was a highlight.” Middleton returns to the Premier League next season along with newcomers Ansty. Billingshurst and Worthing are relegated.
Horsham foiled by missed chances Ryman Football League South Division Horsham 1 - 3 Molesey Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter If ever there was a game of two halves it was this one. At the break Horsham were ahead but Molesey came out fighting in the second half and snatched the game, giving the Hornets an object lesson in finishing. Ten years ago Horsham won promotion into the Ryman Premier League when they won at Molesey by the same scoreline and in their last game the Moles were thrashed 6-0 by Dorking Wanderers but at Gorings Mead these stats counted for nought, where in a fast first half both sides had

opportunities with both keepers keeping busy. But after 20 minutes the Hornets were rewarded when Dan Sackman opened his account for the club with a header at the car park end. Horsham could have gone to the break further ahead after Liam McDevitt latched onto a Terry Dodd supply only to shoot straight at the keeper. Then Tom Lawley’s free kick found the box but went begging. Soon after the resumption McDevitt was again in action but shot wide before Russell headed in a corner for the Moles. Darren Boswell was then denied by the Moles’ keeper Allen until a corner at the other end enabled Nwoko to give Molesey the lead with blast from a seemingly impossible angle. Dodd might have equalised
for the Hornets but was thwarted by the keeper before being yellow carded along with a Moles counterpart. Some promising Hornet build- ups fizzled out before Chalke sealed Horsham’s fate from close range at the death after the defence had been scythed through. At the whistle Horsham Manager Dom Di Paola’s expression spoke volumes, Life President Frank King summing up with: “I was hopeful at half time and thought we could get three points, but we seemed to go to sleep in the second half.” Horsham’s next game is at home to 15th placed Chipstead tomorrow (Saturday), 3.00pm kick off, then, on Tuesday, 13th they travel to Burgess Hill in the cup.
Heath surrender a two goal lead to lose at Chichester SCFL Premier Division Chichester City 4 – 3 Broadbridge Heath
Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor After leading by two goals at half time Heath looked set to continue their excellent start to the season but a second half collapse saw them lose 4-3 to a late goal from Chichester City’s Joshua Case. A much changed Heath side from the one that defeated league favourites Haywards Heath Town 3 days before was forced upon manager Steve Painter; not for the first time in these early stages of the season. Andy Howard gave Heath the lead as early as the 5th minute and when Shaun Findlay
made it a two goal advantage just short of the half hour mark Painter’s side looked set for their fifth win from six league matches this season. City had other ideas however and two quick goals after the break pulled them level. Jimmy Wild pounced for the home side in the 52nd minute and Scott Jones hit the equaliser 3 minutes later. The turnaround was completed on the hour when Harry Williams gave City the lead for the first time in the match. Hope of a possible come back by Heath was on the cards when Heath striker Tiago Andrade equalised on 77 minutes but Chichester were not finished and with 6 minutes remaining Case scored the winner for his side; something that at half time seemed a very unlikely result.
Disappointing run of form continues for YM SCFL Premier Division Lancing 1 – 0 Horsham YMCA
Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA’s usually happy hunting ground of Lancing’s Culver Road ground with its synthetic surface - that as a norm suits YM’s passing game – saw another defeat on Tuesday evening to add to YM’s indifferent start to the season. Manager Peter Buckland said after the 4-1 home victory last weekend that if Ash Dugdale and Alex Gathern recovered from their injuries sustained in the win then he was confident that his side would grab 3 points from this match; how-
ever it was not to be. An early long stoppage for an injury to match referee David Philp - who was replaced by the linesman with a volunteer linesman taking the flag – disrupted what was a slick match that the home side had the better of. After a period of sustained pressure on YM ‘keeper Lewis Blaney’s goal, Lancing forward Lewis Finney grabbed the first and what turned out to be the only goal of the match with 38 minutes played. The high tempo of the first half continued into the second period but despite their best attempts YM was unable to breach the home defence and the final whistle signalled the third defeat in six for YM in what has been stuttering start to the season.
