Village campaigns for better bus services phil dennett News Editor
Bus users have launched a campaign for a better service for their village. Their petition calls for an evening bus service in Broadbridge Heath, near Horsham and a better Sunday service. Residents have signed up for the petition to Metrobus Ltd, Arriva Kent and Surrey Ltd and Compass Travel (Sussex) Ltd. The campaigners said in a statement of their aims : “Broadbridge Heath is an area served by three bus services during the day, but none in the evening. With a growing population due to new housing developments, an evening service is becoming increasingly necessary. “Broadbridge Heath is a long walk from the town centre, not something you want to do after working all day. Some people are unable to walk such a distance. “An evening service in Broadbridge Heath may also benefit other areas it passes through and possibly provide evening links with other towns. “We request an hourly service, running until 0000.(midnight) All journeys should serve Horsham Bus Station and Horsham Railway Station. Journeys could connect with fast trains from London Victoria. “To provide the greatest benefit, Wickhurst Green should be served.
“Out of the three routes that run during the week, only one runs on a Sunday. “The first Sunday service journey serves Broadbridge Heath at 1047 and the last journey back is at 1702. It only runs every two hours. “We request an earlier service at 0847 and a later service at 1902. An hourly service would be useful. Wickhurst Green should be served by all journeys. It would also be useful to serve Horsham Railway Station throughout the day. Jour-

George follows famous on career path A pupil at Christ’s Hospital school at Horsham is following the footsteps of Sir Winston Churchill, James Blunt, Prince William and Prince Harry at one of the world’s famous military centres. George Boyle, 17, has been awarded a Full Main Board Pass and a guaranteed place at The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. The school says the selection process for the scholarship entry to Sandhurst is highly competitive and demanding. It involves interviews, a scrutiny board, a medical and time in the field through a generic army insight course but out of hundreds of applicants, George was one of a handful of fortunate students awarded a Full Main Board Pass. George, who is taking A Level Maths, Chemistry and Economics and this year will be heading up the army section of the school’s Combined Cadet Force said: “I’m not only thrilled to have been awarded a guaranteed place at Sandhurst, but also because it has been achieved
through such a difficult and competitive process. “From a young age I have always been interested in a military career. My enthusiasm was fired up by the sheer range and scope of careers available within The Armed Forces. “There is the possibility and opportunity of a university bursary, which I will try for in due course. The Board Pass also means that I have the option of applying for any type of commission, including a gap year, short service or regular commission. “I received lots of help, useful advice and practical experience from several helpful sources at school, not only from the cadet force in the form of both internal and external leadership training but also from positions of responsibility in my boarding house as deputy head of house, and through playing team and individual sports. “I can now focus on and enjoy my other school commitments, whilst working hard to get the best possible A Level results next year.”

Dementia club hopes for district People with dementia might get a second club of their own in Horsham district by the end of the year. A new club opened last month in Southwater and meets every Wednesday between 10am -3pm at Southwater Leisure Centre in Pevensey Road.
We are delighted to be opening a Club for people with dementia in Southwater Now organisers Age UK Horsham District hope to run another session in the district. Mandy Jones, the charity’s dementia services manager, said: “We work in partnership with West Sussex Carers Support and are looking to open a further club for people with dementia in the Horsham District before the end of the year. I am keen to hear from those who would benefit from a dementia club in their area. “We are delighted to be opening a Club for people with dementia in Southwater. The local leisure centre is a great venue in the heart of thecommunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming new members and arecommitted to ensuring that everyone enjoys their time with us.” During the day members will enjoy a wide range of dementia
friendly activitieswhich are arranged with individual’s interests and abilities in mind. All activities, snacks and a hot two course lunch are included in the fee. The experienced club team of staff and volunteers will work with up to 12people who have a diagnosis of dementia and are cared for by a family member or friend. This is the newest club for people with dementia to be launched byAge UK Horsham District and supported by West Sussex County Council. Mandy said: “We aim to provide local clubs for people with dementia across the whole of the Horsham District, we currently run clubs inHorsham on Mondays, Storrington on Tuesdays and Fridays, and now Southwater on Wednesdays. It is important that we are able to offer clubs in different locations and close to where people live. We offer the support on different days of the week as it offers carers a choice of which day suits them best. One of the most important aspects of our clubs are the ability to offer a much needed day of respite to those looking after a loved one living with dementia. We are able to do this by offering support, information and occasional carers meetings.” Anyone interested in booking a free trial day at any club or just want to know about the charity’s work they may contact 01403 751327. It is interested in hearing from potential volunteers.

They also met Springboard Chief Executive Nigel ScottDickeson, trustees, staff , parents and children. Those invited included the Short Breaks groups and family members for the end of summer disco. Big night for group
Dancers from Horsham will cap a successful anniversary with a charity show at a theatre. Organisers say it has been a spectacular 25th year for Fi Steps dance school, based in Horsham and Crawley. After being presented with the Crawley Community award for Performing Arts the group is now going to perform at the Hawth Theatre tonight and tomorrow in celebration of what it says is a momentous year. The show will be filled with tributes to musicals, street dance, contemporary dances, with music from all eras, old and new, being performed by more than 140 local dancers aged 4-25 years. Fi Steps was started in 1991 by Fiona Whyte to create opportunities for youngsters to perform in a safe, fun, and non-competitive environment and was established with just 16 members. As a school they have made more than 800 performances. Highlights include 28 school show productions, more than 50 West End Performances at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Theatre Royal in Drury Lane and The London Palladium. There have also been seven European Performances at Disneyland Paris, Port Aventura and MSC Mediterranean Cruises, many professional dance workshops as well as local charity shows, fetes, festivals, flashmobs other local productions, including Forward Motion, Chance to Dance. Many students have gone on to the UK’s best Performing Arts colleges and carved themselves a career in entertainment. Nina Burke, 14 said: “I have been with Fi Steps for almost eight years and ever since I joined I have loved it. Working with our Fi Steps family inspires me to be the best dancer I can be. Every show has been better than the last and I can’t wait for future ones. We do so much more than just the annual Hawth Theatre show; for instance I have dance in the pre-parade at Disneyland Paris, performed at the Albert Hall and at The Capitol Theatre in Horsh-

am. Fi Steps has given me once in a lifetime opportunities and I am so grateful.” Fiona Whyte said: “The last 25 years have created so many fantastic opportunities beyond anything I ever dreamed of. Whether students have taken up dance or performance as a career, the one thing that everyone has hopefully taken away from Fi Steps are some incredible memories, friendships and performanc-
es in the most amazing places which will be around for many years to come.” Details on https://www.parkwoodtheatres.co.uk/The-Hawth), or visit the Fi Step website for more information and testimonials (http://www.fisteps.com/). people with or without disabilities and their families for play and social opportunities. Mr Mitchell said: “It was fantastic to meet with Nigel and the staff and children with their new Patron, Tom Hunter. “The Springboard Project is one of my chosen three charities and it is now in its 24th year which is a fantastic milestone, but of course the big celebration will be next September, their 25th. “The trustees, staff and volunteers are so dedicated in the time and skills they give which has ensured that Springboard Project’s vitality and success continues.” Pictured are (left to right) Cllr Mitchell, Nigel Scott-Dickeson and Tom Hunter of Tomfoolery with children.

BBQ fans warned about fire risks
Barbecue fans are being warned to be careful about using disposable equipment after a fire at the Horsham Household Waste Recycling Site. A blaze broke out at the recycling site causing a temporary closure on August 26. It is thought that the fire started in a metal container on site because of a disposable barbecue igniting material on a camping chair. After using disposable barbecues, residents are advised to not dispose of the charcoal until it is completely cool. Disposal barbecues have been popular for decades but experts say they can pose danger if not properly put out. David Barling, West Sus-
sex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Thankfully this fire was contained, disruption to normal services was minimal and on this occasion no-one was hurt. “This incident serves as a reminder to take care when using disposable barbecues. Always make sure the charcoal is completely cool before disposing of it, which might take several hours. It is not worth the risk. “If you have any doubts about safely disposing your barbecue you can speak with a member of staff at your local Household Waste Recycling Site.” For more information on the safe disposal of barbecues visit www.recycleforwestsussex.org.

Horsham session will dispel fostering myths Potential foster parents can attend an information evening in Horsham as a council explodes a few myths about the service. West Sussex residents are being urged not to rule themselves out of becoming foster parents because of a number of myths that have been putting people off before they start. West Sussex County Council is highlighting that anyone who has a spare room and the desire to make a difference has the potential to give a child a loving home. The Information session is on Tuesday at County Hall North in Horsham from 6.30pm. One myth the fostering team is keen to dispel is that there is an upper age limit to fostering. In fact, the council says that as long as you are reasonably fit and in relatively good health there could be an opportunity to foster.
Kirsty Hanna, Group Manager for Fostering Recruitment at West Sussex County Council, said: “Retired people quite often say to us that they think they’re too old to foster. In fact, they can be perfect mentors for young people. “Our supported lodgings scheme enables young people to learn life skills in a safe environment and the older generation are excellent at providing this type of support.” Other myths include: • You cannot foster if you work. FALSE. We consider every person’s current commitments and family set up carefully in order to find fostering opportunities that are suitable. • You have to be in a relationship to foster. FALSE. Single, co-habiting, married, and those in same sex relationships are all welcomed. • You can only foster if you own
your own home. FALSE. All we ask is for you to have a stable tenancy and that your landlord is happy for you to foster. Stephen Hillier, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children - Start of Life said: “Many working people would like to give something back to their communities and we find that people who work can do a wonderful job by offering respite to existing foster carers or to birth parents who have a child with disabilities. “We are also keen to find people from a variety of cultural backgrounds as the children who come into our care are from many different backgrounds and we also need to support young asylum seeking children who find themselves alone in this country.” There are currently around 650 children in West Sussex in foster care.

Bake for a good cause The charity Beating Bowel Cancer is looking for budding bakers in West Sussex to help beat the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. The charity wants volunteers to make cakes or biscuits for a bake sale fundraiser at work, home, social club or sports club. The challenge is taking place anytime over the summer. Beating Bowel Cancer aims to raise £10,000 towards its Hidden Heartache appeal, so they can support more patients and families. The money could cover the cost of the charity’s nurse helpline for three months, which could support over 600 bowel cancer patients, families and friends. Each year in the UK more than 41,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and around 16,000 people die of the disease. But despite such alarming statistics, the good news is that bowel cancer can be successfully treated in over 90 per cent of cases if caught early. Sarah Webster Community Fundraiser for the South East says “Let’s make a real difference to people beating Bowel Cancer” Supporters can get started with the Bake It 2 Beat It Challenge by contacting the charity for a fundraising pack which in-
cludes exclusive Beating Bowel Cancer cake toppers, at bakeit@ beatingbowelcancer.org Residents who want to support the Bake it 2 Beat It Challenge, contact Sarah Webster on 07780 000996 or email sarah. webster@beatingbowelcancer. org The charity said people could share their baking creations on Facebook and Twitter and tag @ bowelcancer #BakeIt2BeatIt For more information about bowel cancer, visit beatingbowelcancer.org. Or if you have any questions about bowel cancer, you can call the charity’s Helpline nurses, on 020 8973 0011 or email nurse@beatingbowelcancer.org. Each year around 16,000 people die of bowel cancer and in the UK about 41,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year. Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and about 110 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every day, which is someone every 15 minutes. Bowel cancer affects both men and women. If diagnosed early more than 90% of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully. The majority (95%) of bowel cancer cases occur in people over 50, but it can affect anyone of any age.

Help promised as travel card is axed A travel card is to be axed at the end of the year to help ease a £44 million shortfall in council funding. West Sussex County Council will cease its 3in1 bus travel card on December 31, but has pledged that financial help will continue for low income families. The council says it will discontinue the scheme, run since 2007, in light of changes to national legislation and as part of its savings plan to fill a £44.2m funding shortfall this year. But it stresses that new financial arrangements are being put in place for low income families. Help will be available for pupils aged up to 16 years old who are existing 3in1 Card holders, attending the closest school outside
We are taking steps to mitigate the loss of the 3in1 card for existing users when it expires their catchment area and are not already eligible for free travel to school. The 3in1 Cards are for young people aged from five to 19. Pupils and students pay £50 for the card,
which entitles them to savings on bus travel. The council says only about 6,000 students out of a potential 116,000 school and college goers in West Sussex use the scheme, which costs £1.2m a year. The council will also provide financial support for 16-19 year
olds from low income families, who use bus travel to attend full-time further education. It will continue meeting with bus operators, schools and colleges to consider future travel concessions in absence of the scheme. The council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, John O’Brien, said: “This was a difficult decision to take but we are
all living and working in one of the most financially challenging times local government has ever known. “We are looking at everything we do. 3in1 Cards are a discretionary service used by only 5% of eligible school children and college goers across our county. “We have to look at the cost of running the overall scheme against the number of people who use it and the ever growing pressures on other areas of our work – especially across our children’s and adults’ services.” “We are taking steps to mitigate the loss of the 3in1 card for existing users when it expires. “For families with lower incomes, we are arranging financial help if they attend the nearest school out of catchment and don’t qualify for free travel. “For families with higher incomes, we are doing everything we can with commercial bus operators to come up with appropriate solutions to lessen the impact on current 3in1 card users.” New and renewal cards will be available, at a reduced price, with an expiry date of 31 December 2016. Further information is being sent to card holders and will be available at www.your3in1.co.uk Card holders with a card that runs after 31 December 2016 will get a partial refund, if applicable, in early 2017.

Customers will still be able to transact manual banking (non-barcoded transactions) for Post Office customers and the 99 per cent of UK bank customers who can access their accounts at the Post Office. Also
cheques will continue to be accepted as a method of payment. The new-style branch will be built in line with Post Office specifications to ensure sufficient space for the new style local Post Office to operate alongside the retail offer. The new layout is a more modern way of offering Post Office services, but it in no way compromises the professional service standards that customers rightly expect in all of our branches. Staff are fully aware of the need to respect customer privacy and confidentiality. Customers will also be asked to stand back from the counter when awaiting service. Keith Long, Post Office Area Manager, said: “We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents. “We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs. This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and will secure services for the future.” Partridge Green Post Office will be delighted to welcome customers to the newly refurbished branch. Local residents and small business customers will be able to access a wide range of Post Office and mails services, including Special Delivery, Local Collect, home shopping returns, online banking cash deposits and withdrawals. Other services include Post Office Card Account withdrawals, sending funds abroad using Moneygram, and customers can also pay bills, pre-order travel money, apply for travel insurance and top up mobile phones.

Museum highlights magic of watercolour
builds on Horsham Museum and Art Gallery’s nascent collection. With works by ‘the greats’ on show, it reveals how Horsham can build up a fabulous collection by leading talents of the medium from the 1750s onwards. This exhibition will not only expose why the paintings are so aesthetically pleasing and intrinsically interesting, but also deliver some of the back history to show why they are part of our visual and cultural heritage. The exhibition In Pursuit of the Watercolour includes a large number of works loaned by passionate individuals who are de-
18th century life. As watercolour artists became the ‘brash young guns’ that disrupted the traditional art world (used to oil and historic paintings with classical imagery and messages), they shook up the art world and became revolutionary in approach and technique. The watercolour became democratic:
The exhibition is part of a wider programme of events and activities manuals were published showing how to create your own, not only for men but also for women. In such a world the professional artist had to be on top form, so it is of little surprise that artists such as Varley, Wheatley, De Wint who all feature in this showcase became outstanding practitioners, and are much sought after today. Throughout the 19th century the watercolour grew in popularity, moving out of the album of images into framed mini masterpieces that hung on the wall of the growing number of middle class homes. Amongst those on display are the works of Horsham-born Victorian artist

A festival of the watercolour is being staged at Horsham Museum, beginning with an exhibition called In Pursuit of the Watercolour. The museum said: “The watercolour… quintessentially English, the hardest medium to paint with and a radical art form that has become democratic and enjoyed by millions: it has been much maligned but, as the new festival of the watercolour shows, it is worthy of both serious viewing and enjoyment. The multi-layered festival kicks off with a stunning exhibition, In Pursuit of the Watercolour, which
lighted to show the public why the watercolour should not be overlooked - and in addition, why it is an area that Horsham Museum and Art Gallery could collect, as it moves along with the town in raising a cultural offer worthy of 21st century Horsham. The Museum is delighted that Toovey’s have supported this exhibition, enabling the Museum to host events and fundraise to build the collection. Toovey’s have also donated a stunning watercolour to the museum’s collection: A market boat on the Scheldt, by Frederick Clarkson, painted in 1828 as a study for his oil painting in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The story begins with medieval watercolours, at a time when the medium was used to colour images, along with a 17th century map of Slinfold. In the 18th century, seen by many as the birth pangs of a new art, the watercolour moved away from ‘colouring in’, to a medium that allowed for expressive creativity. Even the topographical views, seen as the mainstay of the watercolour, show a great deal of inventiveness and skill, with artists using 30 or 40 colours in one painting. With work by Sandby, Francis Grosse, Henry Edridge and others, the exhibition will show the influence that watercolours had on antiquarian taste, alongside topographical views which form our mental image of late
Helen Cordelia Coleman, whose exquisite work was praised by The Times in their leader column. The exhibition is part of a wider programme of events and activities - including two masterclasses by award-winning artist Gordon Rushmer, who will reveal techniques and talent built up over 50 years as an artist. Thanks to Seawhites, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are hosting a number of workshops for children to get involved, whilst collectors can ask the experts from Toovey’s for help with identification and valuation. This is the first of what is planned to be a yearly event. Details of the programme can be found on www.horshammuseum. org. The exhibition In Pursuit of the Watercolour is an outstanding opportunity for the people of Horsham district and beyond to engage with art of exceptional quality . It includes loaned masterpieces from Worthing Museum and Art Gallery as well as from private individuals. The exhibition would not have been possible without the support of Toovey’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers who have kindly produced a catalogue of the works on display to help raise funds to build up the watercolour collection for Horsham Museum and Art Gallery.” Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, with free admission.

120th anniversary of historic school match
Autumn show on the horizon
Lineup for cricket
Pupils at the pump late 18th century
Press cutting In 1896 a cricket match that took place at Warnham was widely reported in the Sussex and London press. It was unusual because Harry Harben, the owner of Warnham Lodge and a Governor of Christ’s Hospital, organised a cricket match between eleven local boys and Christ’s Hospital pupils but the whole school accompanied the cricket team and were all entertained in style. It was reported as being a beautiful day and it could have been Mr Harben’s attempt to help familiarise the pupils with what was to be their new home in the countryside of Sussex. The journey began from London Bridge Station (the School was then situated in Newgate Street in the City of London where it was originally founded). A special train carried 525 boys and 50 adults, including the Head Master, Rev Richard Lee, to Warnham Station. The party was met by a number of vehicles “of all colours, shapes and sizes, drawn from Horsham, Reigate, Dorking and places from some distance around” to transport them to the private cricket ground at the Lodge which was a mile from the station. The first part of the school’s outing was a cricket match between eleven boys from Christ’s Hospital and eleven arranged by Mr Harben. The team from CH won by 20 runs on the first innings. Lunch was served in a large marque and the group were then photographed by local photographer, Mrs Aubrey of West Street, Horsham. During the afternoon, the pupils were able to explore the countryside around the Lodge and were also entertained by a ventriloquist and conjuror with his assistant “thought-reader”
and a Punch and Judy show. In the meantime, staff were taken to see the new site for the school. The visitors left Warnham that evening to catch the train back to London Bridge but did not leave without enthusiastically cheering Mr Harben and his family for their kind hospitality. Henry Harben was a Governor
of Christ’s Hospital from 1887 and an Almoner from 1893. He was the first President of the Prudential Assurance Company and he was knighted in 1897. The school moved out of the City to its purpose-built campus near Horsham in 1902. Research courtesy of Christ’s Hospital Museum.

It’s our first time and we have had had loads of fun raising money for the hospice.
This year’s Dragon Boat festival is on target to raise about £50,000 after 28 company teams battled it out on Tilgate Lake. Crawley mayor Raj Sharma officially opened the event as free entertainment that included traditional stalls and a Metrobus activity bus drew crowds. Angie Burton, Senior Contract

Astrid Frank, European Vice President at Thermo Fisher Scientific, based in Horsham, said: “We’ve been proud sponsors of St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival for several years and we are always pleased to be part of such a fun and vibrant event.”

Autumn is slowing stealing up on us after some gloriously sunny days in August and early September. But before it arrives in its hues of gold and red garden lovers have been enjoying a splash of late summer colour at their favourite spors such
nearby Wakehurst and Nymans gardens, while the water lilies are always popular at Sheffield Park Gardens, renowned for its fantastic Autumn colours. The Post captured a small sample of the colour that has been on show and the pictures are presented on this page.

Ditch the clutter for good drainage Owners of ditches are being reminded to clear them in good time for winter. West Sussex County Council is keen for what are called riparian owners, responsible for the upkeep of their ditches, to make the most of the warmer weather and clear them out. Ditches are watercourses designed to drain the surrounding area or hold water. Those ditches only draining roads are usually the responsibility of the local county council. But others where the ditch drains both land and road are usually the responsibility of what are called riparian owners. Councils say removing vegetation, grass, weeds, shrubs or any other debris helps water run freely and prevents flooding. When the weather is dry, it is easier to stand inside a ditch to cut it back. The council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport John O’Brien, said: “If you are a riparian ditch owner responsible for keeping your ditch clear, it makes sense to do it when it’s dry. “If your ditch holds water in winter, you are going to have problems getting into it to clear later in the year when it’s wet. “The more clogged up it is, the more likely it will fail to
protect from floods.” Mr O’Brien added: “The cost of maintaining a watercourse is minor compared to the costs that can arise from flood damage, not to mention the distress and inconvenience caused if your property is flooded. “And if a flood occurs because a landowner has not carried out their responsibility to properly maintain their watercourses, that landowner could be liable for compensating any damage that occurs.” If your ditch needs heavy clearance work, the County Council’s Operation Watershed fund can offer help. For more information email: operation. watershed@westsussex.gov.uk Owners are asked by the council to note it is an offence to disturb birds and their nests during the nesting season between March and August. If birds are nesting in your ditch, please delay any clearance work until later in the year.

Youngsters who visited older people were amazing
Celebrating the visit. Teenagers who visited older people in Horsham were described afterwards as amazing. For five days a group of young adults participating in a local National Citizen Service scheme came to visit older people at Age UK Horsham District. One group interviewed some of the older people who use the Day Services at Lavinia House, and then created a short film about how a day at Age UK Horsham District focusses around the five ways to well-being – simple things that we can all do in our day-to-day lives to improve our well-being. This group also held a mini Olympics and a tea party for older people at the end of the week. The other group, under the instruction of Age UK Horsham
District’s volunteer Head Gardener, spent the week working with volunteer gardeners varnishing, painting, cleaning equipment and gardening as required. Mandy Jones, Age UK Horsham District’s Clubs and Dementia Services Manager, said: “They are an amazing bunch of 16 and 17 year olds who were a delight to have with us. They spent their first day interviewing our members and discovering their life stories for the short film they created for us. They were amazed by some of the stories!’ The short film that the group put together will be shown at Age UK Horsham District’s ‘Full of Life’ event on October 3 2016, a day where everyone is welcome to visit their fully accessible Lavinia House venue and try something
new such as sushi making, Yoga, gentle armchair exercise or have their blood pressure taken and talk to experts about how to raise their heart rate safely. National Citizen Service is a Government backed opportunity for 15 to 17 years-old to embark on exhilarating challenges, make their mark and build skills for work and life. More than 200,000 young people have already taken part. For more information about the range of services the team at Age UK Horsham District provide to local older people please visit their website - www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk – or social media pages; www.facebook. com/AgeUKHorshamDistrict or @ AgeUKHorshamD on Twitter.

H2Only challenge together. Just a like an RNLI lifeboat crew, they’ll be able to rely on each other for support when the going gets tough and they hit choppy waters during the challenge. I’d encourage all H2Only participants to stay on the water to help the RNLI stay on the water.” The H2Only drive has even spawned a temporary “pop-up”
bar in south-east London. The bar, named The Bottle, will offer 10 different regional varieties of seawater including “Sussex Sea”, which was bottled at Brighton Beach, in a bid to educate people about the potential dangers of sea water. Obviously the water won’t be sold for consumption; instead the bottles carry stark warnings on the label about the specific risks of the coastlines they were sourced from. In 2015, RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews across the UK and Ireland rescued 7,973 people, saving 348 lives, while the charity’s lifeguards helped 18,181 people and saved 94 lives. People in Horsham district are being invited to drink only water to help a charity that stops people being killed by it. Lifeboat crews save about 8,000 lives each year. This month the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is challenging people across Sussex to give up all drinks except water for 10 days to raise vital funds for the lifesaving charity. No tea or coffee. No fizzy drinks. No orange juice. And definitely no wine or beer. Just water for 10 tough days. The sponsored H2Only challenge runs from 5pm on September 13 to 5pm on September 23 , with participants giving up the drinks they love for 10 long days and drinking nothing but water throughout the challenge. Jade Cohen, volunteer lifeboat crew member at Brighton RNLI Lifeboat Station, said: “The H2Only challenge is extremely tough. We know that going 10 days without a morning cuppa, a pint after work or a can of fizzy drink will be really hard for everyone taking part. “Every pound raised is so important to the RNLI. As a charity, we rely on the support and generosity of the public so that we can continue to save lives at sea. All the money raised by people taking on the H2Only challenge

“So far our investigations into this fraud have led to two West Sussex butchers receiving cautions and a meat supplier to the catering industry receiving a warning letter.” David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Our Trading Standards team have done a fantastic job acting on a consumer complaint. “Not only were consumers misled by this dishonest act but so were the local businesses involved, who purchased the meat in good faith. “This sentencing serves as a reminder to those that are involved in falsely advertising and selling produce that we will find out and we will make sure enforcement action is taken against you.” Investigations are continuing to ensure all businesses involved no longer sell falsely described meat. To report a case of suspected meat substitution contact Trading Standards via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506 or online at www.westsussex.gov. uk/tsreport.

Shoppers in West Sussex got sheep meat instead of goat after wholesalers duped butchers. Forge Farm Meats , based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, has been ordered to pay more than £8,000 in fines and costs after goat meat they supplied to two West Sussex butchers was found to be sheep. The company pleaded guilty to two offences under the Food Safety Act for supplying misrepresented goat legs to the two butchers, whose names have not been released. After a customer complaint Trading Standards officers from West Sussex Council covertly purchased 11 goat samples from West Sussex butchers and restaurants. Eight of these were found to be sheep meat. Peter Aston, West Sussex Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “Traceability and correct labelling is vital as once butchered goat meat is very difficult to tell apart from mutton or lamb. “Some of the sources of the meat tested traced back to a Spanish cutting plant, so as a result we are sharing information from our investigation with the Food Standards Agency and Spanish authorities.

New Venture Helps Small Businesses in Horsham A Horsham man has launched a new venture aimed at helping small businesses in the area to connect online. After more than 30 years of working with businesses in the construction industry, John Wright has set up website design company, ‘it’seeze Horsham’. He explained: “I know as well as anyone, how tough the marketplace can be for

a start-up business, so I wanted to do something that I would enjoy, as well as something that could benefit the local community.” John’s new business venture was founded as a result of the research he did with small businesses in the local area: “I was staggered to learn that a high number of companies don’t have a website. And the majority of those that do have one are either unhappy with the service, or they experience ongoing problems with their site.” The research also revealed that, on the whole, small businesses simply
don’t know how to source an effective website. The world of technology, and the ever changing internet, can be a frightening prospect for small business owners when looking to have web presence. John, who works with a team of expert web designers and developers, added: “Our websites are easy to use and enable small businesses to have a professionally designed website at an affordable price. “I hope to be able to use my previous business experience to help local businesses overcome their challenges or fears about websites and I promise to only speak a language they understand. . . after all, that’s why the business is called ‘it’seeze’ pronounced as ‘it’s easy”. Autumn 2016 marks the beginning of a UK wide tour and the release of a brand new single from the inimitable Nell Bryden, and you can see her perform live at The Capitol this weekend. A firm favourite on the BBC Radio 2 playlist, Bryden’s work has been fiercely championed by the likes of Bob Harris, Chris Evans, Jools Holland, Janice Long, Gary Barlow and the late
Sir Terry Wogan. Following the release of her new single, the talented singer/ songwriter will embark on a tour, of the UK, that is sure to confirm her already recognised gifts as a superb live performer. The tour takes in a fantastic and diverse range of concert halls, clubs and auditoriums throughout the nation, both intimate and vast. It will be a special opportunity to hear brand new material for the
Bryden’s work has been fiercely championed by the likes of Bob Harris, Chris Evans, Jools Holland, Janice Long, Gary Barlow and the late Sir Terry Wogan who fell in love with the song and covered it on her 2013 album ‘Closer To The Truth’. While the immediacy of Bryden’s music arises from her arresting and expressive voice, it is her outstanding talent as a songwriter that leaves a last-
ing impression. Her new single, entitled ‘What Is It You Want’, is a deeply emotional and heartfelt track which delves into the strains of an intense relationship. Showcasing soaring melodies that highlight the full range and power of her voice, alongside signature soul-stirring lyrics, all woven together with a unique songwriting style, ‘What Is It You Want’ represents some of Bryden’s very best work to date. Her eclectic ear has also propelled Bryden to unexpected success as a radio presenter. In 2014, she hosted a Radio 2 special of transatlantic hits, ‘Nell Bryden’s New York Hour’, while January 2016 saw her host an acclaimed four part series, ‘Nell’s Angels’, in which she celebrated great female artists across a number of genres: gospel and soul, folk, country and blues, and jazz. ‘What Is It You Want’ is the debut single, taken from Nell Bryden’s forthcoming album ‘Bloom’, due to be released in early 2017. Bryden’s talent is as fresh as it is timeless. Her forthcoming UK tour will be a perfect celebration of a life devoted to music. Performance: Saturday 17 September at 7.30pm. Review Nicci Hopson - Theatre Director John O Sullivan , AKA ‘Newsagent Provocateur’ returned to the Capitol, Horsham last week! A seasoned , very local contemporary comedian has the ability of bringing an eclectic evening of entertainment to Sussex like no other. How John O Sullivan can knit together such diversity in one evening is incredible , from the infamous Blobbie William , ‘TakeThat’ tribute artist, Tony James, to the star from the Office Ewen Macintosh chatting comfortably on his sofa, having the ability to show their personality plus bringing in hysterical moments of live telephone chats, just superb and natural. The evening was a combination of Miss Merton joins Jonathan Ross, a very comfortable watch, beautifully complemented by his ever silent side kick Denise ! The whole evening was beautifully dispersed
with Horsham natural talent , Adele wanna be, Lauren Bayross Payne , who was cut off far too short , to follow the unique vocal excellence of Immy Chalk . Any performer that can perform a marriage on stage of two strangers and have the ability of making it funny and ironic
needs a medal. The evening was a rich combi-

nation of very talented , yet not massively well known artists, joining a talented comedian , who has the ability of bringing laughs out of every edge of every conversation, in a kind and generous way. To complement the evening and the whole positive vibe , it was for an inspirational charity , St Catherine’s Hospice. If you missed it , don’t again , as I hope this sort of variety of performance will return to Horsham Photo by Toby Phillips again soon.

Cottesmore Ladies finish runners up Golf Cottesmore’s Morrice Fours team finished as runners up in the SCLGA finals at Goodwood’s Park Course. The team of Iona McKean and Irene Matheson, Pat Johns and Brenda Williams, Penny Gaunt and Christine Knight, and Heather Skinner and Jill Lewis were drawn against West Sussex in the semifinals and achieved a convincing victory, winning two matches 4:3
and 6:4 to play The Nevill in the final. The final was very closely fought with each team securing one win each meaning that the drawn match had to go to ‘sudden death’. As the rain became torrential and the greens began to flood the match was finally decided on the 22nd hole with the victory going to the Nevill. The achievement by Cottesmore of finishing second is on the back of their third place in last year’s competition and leaves

the team looking to go one step further in 2017 and win the competition. Lady Captain, Ruth Leatherbarrow, said, “I am very proud to be Captain of such a great bunch of players and supporters. For the final to be all square after 18 holes and to lose on the 22nd hole after such a tight match in what turned into appalling conditions is a great achievement though obviously disappointing.”

son, John Leadbeater and Pauline Topper who won by 10 shots, 24 – 14. This result just turned the game in Park’s favour. Billingshurst BC In the Victor Ludorum Cup, entrants were drawn into 2 “round robin” groups with each game comprising 6 ends. The final between group winners Geoff Weller and Hazel Sandford resulted in a win for Geoff by 9 shots to 8. Group runners-up were Alan Knight (after a playoff with Hazel) & John Bennett. The result meant that the Victor Ludorum Cup for the best overall performance in this year’s internal competitions was won by Alan Readshaw with Paul Clegg as runner-up. Pulborough BC Finals

On the Sunday the Singles Handicap was won by Ivan Salmon who overcame a 2 shot handicap against Colin Pardy. The Drawn Pairs saw father and son Mick and Martyn Ralph defeat Steve Adsett and Clare Stevens and in the 3,2,1 Diggle Cup Chris Etherington beat Colin Pardy to take the trophy. The Men’s Championship brought Pulborough’s season to a close and resulted in a win for Ivan Salmon over Adey Stratton in a tight hard fought final.

Over 100 people from local clubs and societies will be helping with the preparations and then beavering away on the day. Every half marathon runner receives a goody bag and a medal with prize money of £250 for both male and female winners and additional awards for places, the best team, record breakers and the fancy dress competition. The event benefits local community organisations and this year the chosen charity is St Catherine’s Hospice, dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers, the organisers saying: “They do such great work and I hope everyone will give generously!” There will be food stalls, a jazz band and a guaranteed great atmosphere. Participants and spectators are advised to arrive early! For more information on the famously well organised event see http://www.barnsgreen-half.org. uk and be sure to pick up a copy of the District Post September 30 edition, which will showcase both runs with full results and stunning photographs.

Little known local runner Shrubb was a major force in international athletics in the early 1900’s and this annual race - and another one in his adopted later life country of Canada – looks to promote his achievements.
Each year the Alf Shrubb Memorial race is run over a 5 mile cross country course in Slinfold, starting and finishing at Slinfold Cricket Club. The organisers invite those wishing to enter this year’s race on Sunday October 2, 11.00am start - to pick up an entry form from Up and Running Sports Shop in Queens Street, Horsham, or to download one from the events section of the Sussex Races website. www. sussexraces.co.uk. Horsham denied by last gasp try Horsham’s Tom Johnson
London 2 South East Horsham 15 - 16 Beckenham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Well supported Horsham started their new league campaign with a frustrating defeat after being ahead for almost the entire
game, right up to the dying moments. Yet, with both defences holding up well, it was a game in which neither side was a clear winner. A strong feature was positive, accurate kicking by new captain Tom Johnson. His penalty put Horsham ahead after 5 minutes, to which Beckenham responded
but missed a kicking opportunity in front of the post. Next came a controversial incident, which proved to be telling, when the visitors were awarded a disputed try, fortunately unconverted. But Johnson restored Horsham’s advantage with a penalty from just short of the half way line. Two more Horsham penalties were secured before Beckenham also got over the posts, followed by a Johnson drop goal falling short and another penalty to give Horsham a 15-8 lead at the break. In the second half Horsham lost possession and Beckenham reduced the deficit with another place kick with the benefit of the wind, which caused Horsham to miss one. Finally, after two scrums came to nought on the Horsham line, a long run down the left enabled Beckenham to cross for an unconverted try in the corner at the death, depriving Horsham by a single point. Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “Quite a few players have moved on since last season so we had a number of men in unfamiliar positions, but it was silly mistakes that cost us dear,” while Tom Johnson summed up by saying: “It was obviously disappointing, but the driving rain made consistent handling very difficult. We won’t win or lose the league in the first game of the season and we’ve got a good squad, are working hard, and know what we have to do”. Tomorrow (Saturday, September 17) Horsham visit Hove, who beat Deal & Betteshanger 18-6 at home last week.
Big win at Lewes thrills Pulborough London 3 South East Lewes 5 - 33 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough opened their new league season with an encouragingly strong win at Lewes, courtesy of a Nick Haynes hat trick of tries and superlative kicking by Captain Frazer Oliphant-Hope. Winning away from home has not always been Boro’s strongest suit, but there was never a doubt as to which side would win at the Stanley Turner Ground. Former rugby powerhouse Lewes dominated the Sussex League last season, earning them promotion back into London SE3 League, but their step up proved to be too daunting a task against determined Boro. Using the slippery conditions skilfully Boro increased possession while the defence held secure at the back, enabling them to open the scoring in the 11th minute with a converted try under the posts following an attack from the half way line. Then, after some neutralised play, Boro broke through the open Lewes defence for another maximised try, until the half time lead was increased to 21 nil when the opposition were sanctioned to 14 men because of a dangerous tackle. Soon after the resumption Boro were handed their fourth – bonus point – but,

unconverted, try when a Lewes dropped ball provided the chance for a 50 yard dash. Two Boro players were then yellowcarded, the hosts grabbing the opportunity to get over the line in their one scoring move. But, Boro overcame their numerical disadvantage with another breakaway try, converted for them to run out 33-5 winners. In addition to the Haynes hat trick Brad
We didn’t really know what to expect because Lewes have a massive pack Game also scored a try, Frazer converting four from five. Delighted Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “We didn’t really know what to expect because Lewes have a massive pack and had won pre-season friendlies against higher league opposition, but our back line was better and we defended as though our lives depended on it. Also, our fitness training really paid dividends!” Tomorrow (Saturday, September 17) Boro welcome Haywards Heath, who last week beat Gillingham Anchorians 25-0 at home.

The torrential rain did not dampen the Hornets as they fought back for their second win of the season with an injury time George Branford goal. Chipstead started the livelier and had the best of the opening exchanges with Hornets ‘keeper Josh Pelling forced into early action to keep parity. However after 29 minutes, and against the run of play, Horsham took the
lead. A long deep cross from Alex Duncan looked easy pickings for Chipstead ‘keeper Sheikh Ceesay but somehow he managed to drop the ball at Darren Boswell’s feet for him to stab the ball just over the line after confirmation from the linesman. The goal lifted Horsham who came more into the match. A Terry Dodd ‘goal’ was disallowed and a few decent efforts were thwarted but, at the referee’s half time whistle, neither side had managed to add to Boswell’s opener. The second half saw both sides coming out looking for the next vital goal and chances were
aplenty at both ends but without success. Again, like against Molesey in their last match, missed chances looked to have been costly when the visitors eventually equalised on 70 minutes. Horsham allowed Erivaldo Felix a free run on goal from where the visiting defender hammered the ball past Pelling. Then with 6 minutes remaining – and after Chipstead’s Mario Quiassaca was sent off - things got a whole lot worse for Horsham. After a poor Lee Carney’s free-kick Chipstead’s Raheem Sterling-Parker raced away and gave Pelling no chance with a fierce angled shot
into the top corner. This time however the Hornets found some resolve and helped with the pace of the returning substitute Tony Nwachukwu they took only 4 minutes to level the score when Charlie Farmer jumped above all to flick a header into the net for what looked like a late point saver. Then with 4 of the allotted 5 minutes of stoppage time played, and after some good play from Boswell and Nwachukwu, George Branford was left to tap over the line from close range to dramatically seal all 3 very valuable points and a second Horsham victory of the season.
Tuesday night’s local derby pitched Broadbridge Heath, who have had a decent start to the season, against Horsham YMCA, who have had a stuttering start, making Heath as the home side favourites to take all 3 points. As it turned out Heath never recovered from going behind in the first minute; YM’s Brad Curtis giving his team the early advantage. From then on it was a close fought tight match with both sides having chances to add to the score line. YM finally ended the match as a contest with 15 minutes remaining when referee Carl Smith awarded them a penalty that Dean Carden dispatched past Heath ‘keeper Jamie Craven. The win sees YM leapfrog Heath in the table on goal difference with both teams on 12 points from their 7 games and in seventh and eighth places respectively. Tomorrow (Saturday 17) YM host Worthing United at Gorings Mead while Heath visit Newhaven.

Premier league Hillians knock Hornets out Horsham Skipper Ashley Jones gets in a header

Photo by John Lines Alan Turvey Trophy Burgess Hill Town 2 – 0 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham went out of the Alan Turvey Trophy after losing 2-0 to Premier League Burgess Hill Town on Tuesday night. However, if the Hornets had not gone down to 10 men at 1-0, when starting to get back into it, then things may have turned out differently. Horsham started with two ex
Hillians in the side, Scott Kirkwood and George Branford, and were put under pressure from the kick off by their higher league opposition. Josh Pelling was called into action in the early stages saving well from Curtis Gayler and Dan Thompson as Town pushed forward. At the other end on a rare attack Terry Dodd had a header well saved by Josh James in the Hillians goal. The inevitable, and deserved, opening goal for the hosts came in the 23rd minute when after some indifferent Hornets defending Tadley Brom-

age connected with Thompson’s low cross to beat Pelling. For the remainder of the half Town continued to boss the play however James was forced into a couple of stops from deflected Horsham efforts and Branford fired wide when he should have at least hit the target. Town’s manager Ian Chapman must have not been happy with the slender lead as his side came out and laid siege to the Horsham goal straight from the restart. As the half went on and the hosts had not increased their Rovers and Robins fought out a typically full-blooded draw to open the season. Chesworth started stronger but Roffey came back and had most of the possession in the first half-hour with Alfie Barnes putting the visitors ahead from the penalty spot. An even second half came to life when Archie Talbot – like Ewan Rennison and Tim Bennett, starting his 10th season for Rovers - slotted home an equaliser with 22 minutes to go. It ended a fair result for two excellent sides, with Pat Gibbs (Roffey) and Jack Woolgar-Leith (Chesworth) outstanding. Chesworth Rovers U13 7 - 3 Rudgwick U13 Chesworth Rovers started the season in style with a home win against Rudgwick in their first ever 11 aside match. The match saw Harry Sutton grab an impressive double, Toby Shepheard made it 3 - 0 after some great team play, Nyle Barton netted 2 and Josh Hayes struck home from outside the area. Rudgwick fought back and brought the score to 6 - 3 before Josh hit his second. Roffey U18 4 - 0 Chichester City U18 Roffey made a flying start to their season with this 4-0 victory over Chichester City Colts. After a goalless first half Alex Barker hit a second half hat-trick and George Chantrill’s powerful freekick rebounded off the unfortunate City keeper into the net. Roffey keeper Samuel Chantrill had a quiet time, but did pull off a fine save to deny City a consolation goal.
lead Horsham sensed that there was something to be had from the match and stated to pose more of a threat and have more of the ball. In an attempt to get an equaliser Dom Di Paola sent on midfielder Lewis Hyde for defender Alex Duncan but the move backfired when after being on the pitch for only a few minutes Hyde was shown a straight red card for denying Lee Harding a clear goal scoring opportunity. After that it was a bridge too far for Horsham and Town again took control of the game, wrapping things up
with 4 minutes remaining when Curtis Gayler took advantage of more hesitant defending before curling a shot past Pelling. The priority for Horsham is undoubtedly to consolidate their Ryman League status so this defeat will not cause manager Di Paola too many worries. On a big positive point Tony Nwachukwu again came on as a substitute and again showed what an asset he is. Nwachukwu will, when fully fit, be a big part in Horsham achieving the target of keeping their Ryman League status.
Crowborough knock Heath out of FA Vase Buildbase FA Vase, First Qualifying Round Broadbridge Heath 2 - 4 Crowborough Athletic Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Heath welcomed Crowborough Athletic to the Leisure Centre for a Buildbase FA Vase tie but although Heath beat the Southern Counties East, Premier Division side last season in the Sussex Senior Cup, it was the Crows who came out on top. The visitors started brightly and took the lead on 6 minutes when Zak Attwood hit a shot across the face of goal that flew off the wet surface and under the body of Heath ‘keeper Paul Taylor. 6 minutes later, a quick Heath throw-in went to Tiago Andrade who played the ball cross-field to Jamal Sultan who hit a right foot shot past the Crows keeper Dan Ellis to equalise. The visitor’s continued to press and regained the lead on 17 minutes when Henry Muggeridge’s deflected shot from 20 yards beat ‘keeper Taylor. Just before the break Heath
pulled the score level when Andy Howard chipped to the far post where his fellow centre-half Stuart Chester bundled the ball over the line. Straight from the restart Andy Howard upended Crows Sam Carrington for a penalty that was taken by Attwood and superbly saved by Tay-
Crows Ibrahim Olutade took advantage breaking away to make it 4-2 lor. Crows did take the lead again just before the hour and in controversial fashion when Attwood appeared to pull Chester out of the way before shooting past Taylor. As manager Painter went for broke by playing 3 at the back and an extra striker Crows Ibrahim Olutade took advantage breaking away to make it 4-2 and earn the Crows a home match against Gravesham Borough in the next round.
