Two attackers hunted after Horsham stabbing phil dennett News Editor

Two men are being hunted by police after another man was stabbed and hit on the head in a Horsham street. Detectives are investigating the circumstances and possible motive for the attack, and believe all three men are known to each other. They have appealed for help from the public help two

The police officers found a 31-year old local man who had sustained several stab wounds to a leg and a buttock men they believe are responsible for the assault. Sussex Police said that at 7.40pm on Monday officers were called to reports of a fight in Park Terrace East, Horsham,

near the car park in adjacent Burnham Place. The police officers found a 31-year old local man who had sustained several stab wounds to a leg and a buttock, as well as a head wound from a blunt instrument. An air ambulance crew was called to the scene but instead the injured man was taken by road by an ambulance crew to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton. The attacked man was treated for his injuries where he was treated and he was discharged from hospital later the same evening. Police said earlier this week that arrests had yet been made but enquiries were continuing to trace two men suspected of having been involved. Sussex Police said: “We believe that all three men are known to each other.” Anyone who saw what happened or has any information is asked to contact Sussex Police via 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 1400 of 19/09. One in three mums miss Founders celebrate whooping cough vaccine Golden Anniversary One in three pregnant women in Sussex and Surrey are missing out on whooping cough vaccine designed to protect babies. They could it from the 20th week of their pregnancy. But NHS statistics show that 30% of pregnant woman across Surrey and Sussex are missing out on the opportunity to protect their unborn babies from this highly infectious disease, which can be very serious in children under a year old. NHS bosses are asking for more women to consider having the vaccine. Instances of whooping cough are increasing amongst babies and young children and getting vaccinated while pregnant is a very effective way of protecting babies from developing the disease in the first few weeks of their life. Pregnant women can get the vaccine at their GP practice and ideally should have it from 20 weeks. The women who receive the vaccine produce antibodies to whooping cough which are passed through the placenta to their baby. The baby then has good protection against whooping cough when he or she is born. To maintain protection, babies should have their routine whooping cough vaccine from 8 weeks of age Dr Max Kammerling, Head of the Public Health Screening and Immunisation team for Surrey and Sussex, said: “Whooping cough can be very dangerous in babies under three months old. They are at greater risk of compli-

cations if they catch the infection before they are routinely immunised and while their immune system is developing. “There’s no evidence to suggest that the whooping cough vaccine is unsafe for pregnant women or their unborn babies. I would encourage all pregnant women to have the vaccine as it is the only way to help protect babies from getting whooping cough in the first few weeks of their life.” Find out more on the NHS Choices website and search for ‘whooping cough’. Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection of the lungs and airways. It causes repeated coughing bouts that can last for two to three months or more and can make babies and young children in particular very ill.

Centre of picture Rosa Searles (orange top) and Mo Barker (dark cardigan) with today’s group. Two women who started a preschool group will help celebrate its 50th anniversary tomorrow. Rosa Searles and her good friend Maureen ‘Mo’ Barker started Partridge Green preschool in the days of the Beatles and the Sixties social revolution, when they saw a need in the community. Since moving away from the village they had both lost touch for 30 years, but were delighted to discover each other again recently through some ‘Google’ detective work. After a reunion at the Pre-School last year Rosa also got in touch with Flick Gregory who shared fond memories of running the group with her best friend Mary Long. Supervisor Rachel Tagg said: “The preschool are looking to trace former staff and committee in order to honour them on our ‘Wall of Stars’ at the event. Long serving staff including Janet Bird, Rita Moore and Angela Lauder made an enormous contribution over the years, sustaining high quality play and learning at unrivalled value. We have good records dating back to 1988 so we are particularly interested in the period before this”. The Preschool has flourished since its early days and this year it has raised more than £5600 in external grants, in addition

to a normal calendar of popular fundraising events such as children’s parties. Chairperson Emma Greenland said: “Whilst our internal fundraising is used for new equipment and resources for the children, the external fundraising has been spent on outdoor improvement works including new wetpour safety flooring, a climbing frame, shed and garage. We are also pleased to announce, due to popular demand, the launch of a fun new ‘stay and play’ session for 0-5 year olds, hosted by our professional staff, every Wednesday from 1.30-3pm from September 21. “It costs £2 a family. If you have photos, contacts or memories to share, please get in touch at info@partridgegreenpreschool.co.uk or join our new facebook page ‘friends of partridge green pre-school’.” The Golden Anniversary Fun Day & Celebration is free and runs from 1-4pm at Partridge Green Village Hall on Saturday. Tickets for tomorrow’s dance featuring the Saviours of Soul ten-piece band for the evening event held at the village hall are selling out fast and can be purchased from The Partridge pub in Partridge Green 01403 710391. Tickets are £15 which includes a fish supper, a glass of “fizz” and a pudding.

New school plan for Horsham Organisers say plans to open a new school in Horsham are quickly gathering local support. Called The Horsham School it would be an all-through school catering for children from 4-16 years old, offering an alternative to the existing schools in Horsham and meeting the demand for additional school places in the town. According to Government figures, there are currently 147 all-through schools in England including two in West Sussex. One such school, The Gatwick School, is behind the plans to open another all-through school in Horsham. All-through schools allow children to stay at school from reception class right through until they do their GCSEs and, in some cases, their A-levels. This model of education is common in the independent school sector. One key benefit of an allthrough school is allowing younger children access to specialist teachers at an early age. Staying on at the same school after the age of 11 also counteracts the disruption of moving schools. Paul Reilly, Executive Head of The Gatwick School said :“At The Gatwick School we have seen first-hand the benefit of educating primary and secondary pupils in one school setting.

The Horsham School would be an all-through school catering for children from 4-16 years pupils.” Mark Roessler, head of The Gatwick School, joined from an all-through school in London which was judged “Outstanding” by Ofsted in 2013. He is excited at the opportunities all-through schools offer. He said : “Working in an all-through school provides many professional opportunities for staff who traditionally may not have had a chance to work with pupils in different age groups. By sharing expertise we can ensure that our pupils have access

to the best teaching practices. We are also able to track pupil progress more effectively”. The Gatwick School says it has proved popular with parents since opening in September 2014 and now has nearly 350 pupils. Many families have been attracted by the all-through nature of the school. Heather McLean who is a parent governor at The Gatwick School said: “As an all-through school, The Gatwick School has inspired my 5-yearold daughter and encouraged her to explore ideas in science, literature, art, music, and technology in a way no other local school could have at reception age. She loves to learn and is excited to go in each day, and regularly attends after school clubs at her request to satisfy her hunger for more”. The Gatwick School is asking the Horsham community to support the application for a new school by expressing interest in the project at www.thehorshamschool.org. The Gatwick School is part of a group of five schools across East and West Sussex. The Gatwick School opened in 2014 and now has approximately 350 pupils. It is partnered with Pansophic Learning, an international education company with schools in the US, Switzerland, Uganda and the UAE.

Family link for hospice Trustees chair The handover

A man whose wife was cared for at St Catherine’s Hospice has become its new Chair of Trustees. Terry O’Leary took over as chairman from Simon Turpitt, who helped the hospice achieve “outstanding” status. Terry lives in Horsham and has first-hand experience of St Catherine’s care, after his wife Jenny died in 2014. He works in global finance and has previously been involved in the charity’s Voices of Experiences forum, where patients and carers give vital insight and feedback on all aspects of the hospice. Terry said: “I’m delighted and honoured to become Chair of the

I was literally amazed that people at St Catherine’s could spend their working lives helping people like us 2013 through my wife, Jenny, who was diagnosed with lung cancer. We both knew about St Cath-

erine’s through reputation and friends who’d been cared for. “We, of course, never expected to need their care ourselves, and if I’m honest we were very apprehensive, expecting something sombre. Nothing could have been further from the reality we experienced, helping us to make the most of Jenny’s time and to care for her up to her death in March 2014. “I was literally amazed that people at St Catherine’s could spend their working lives helping people like us, strangers, to make the best of the most difficult time of our lives. I’m delighted to join the St Catherine’s team”. Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive of Crawley-based St Catherine’s, said: “I’d like to thank Simon for all his hard work and leadership over the last three years and welcome Terry to the St Catherine’s team. Under Simon’s leadership we received an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission; the highest rating available. “We look forward to working with Terry to ensure we build a sustainable future for the hospice underpinned by a commitment to excellence in all that we do.” St Catherine’s trustees are unpaid volunteers who oversee how the local hospice is governed. Coming from a range of professional backgrounds, the hospice benefits from the wealth of varied skills they bring.

Young at heart Valerie Wilson, 67, reeled back the years when a squad of Harley Davidson motor bikers entertained people at a hospice. Valerie, from Upper Beeding, has always loved the bikes and in her youth was keen on the bike and rock scene. She had not been on a Harley for about 30 years and was delighted to put on a helmet again to relive some of her most exciting moments. Valerie said: “It was absolutely brilliant. I haven’t been on one for over 30 years and I was originally a rocker so this was really, really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it.” Valerie has been attending the Day Hospice at the St Barnabas Hospice at Worthing since December 2015. For her, the Harley Davidsons visit brought

back fond memories of her younger years. Riders from the Hogsback Chapter Harley Owners Group travelled to Worthing from Guildford on Thursday 8 October, arriving at the hospice to the sound of roaring engines. On arrival they were greeted by those attending the Day Hospice, as well as some of the patients from the hospice’s In-patient Unit, members of staff and volunteers. The people being cared for by St Barnabas have all been diagnosed with advanced progressive lifelimiting conditions. Paul Taylor, Hogsback Chapter Road Marshal and lead rider for the day, said: “It excites people when they see the bikes and hear the noise. The ones that can come out it’s

Action Medical Research has spent more than £115 million since it was founded in 1952, helping support some amazing medical breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Tyler’s fund raising tribute to mother A 14-year old boy is undertaking an abseil in memory of his mother. Tyler Saward O’Sullivan is gearing up for the challenge to thank St Catherine’s Hospice for it gave his mum Nicola, and he is hoping others from the Horsham and Crawley area will be inspired to join him. Tyler remembers the way the hospice helped while his mum was staying there and said: “We were allowed to come and go when we wanted, to sleep there, and when mum died, the nurses were there to sit with my sister.”The hospice also continued to support him after his mum died by providing counselling at school. Tyler has not decided what Superhero costume he will wear,

but it could be Captain America. To his father Darren he is already a real life Superhero. Darren said: “Tyler’s a top lad. He does so much to help me, I’m on oxygen and he’s my young carer. For 14 years old and everything he’s been through, he is just amazing. “My wife stayed on St Catherine’s Inpatient Unit for two weeks. While she was there, the hospice helped her manage her illness so we could get married at a local registry office. It was a really special day. After the wedding, we went straight back to the hospice. Not many people can say they spent their honeymoon at St Catherine’s but I did. They were amazing; they put petals on the bed and made us a cake. The hospice became a second home for me, we will do all we can to

support them.” This year isn’t the first time that Tyler, from Northgate, Crawley has gone over the edge for St Catherine. Last year, he took part in the same 100ft Superhero abseil challenge alongside his Dad and older sister Ashlee, raising more than £2,000 and being crowned 2015’s top abseil fundraisers. St Catherine’s Superhero abseil takes place on October 8 at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Crawley. To take part, people need to commit to raising a minimum £150 sponsorship. Registration is £25. To sign up please visit: www.stch.org.uk/abseil or contact St Catherine’ s Events Team on 01293 447355 or e-mail events@stch.org.uk.

Masterclasses at Horsham Museum

Family on Darren and Nicola’s wedding day in 2014.

Leading water colour artist Gordon Rushmer stages the first of two masterclasses at Horsham Museum tomorrow. With works owned by The Tate, the House of Lords, the Royal Collection at home and numerous collections aboard, as well as being recipient of the prestigious Rowland Hilder Award from the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, Gordon is a leading watercolourist of today. Now for two days only, Gordon is willing to reveal his secrets in two masterclasses as part of Horsham’s Festival of the Watercolour, run by Horsham District Council’s

Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. These two events are an opportunity for the public to find out what makes for a great watercolour, and importantly, how can they achieve similar results. In the first session In Conversation, Gordon will share his teachings from 50 years’ experience on subjects like the materials minefield, choice of subject, knowing when to stop and being your own fiercest critic. The second masterclass With Brush in Hand, Gordon will be demonstrating a range of traditional techniques using a variety of brushes and materials. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and pose problems as this will not be a rehearsed entertainment, but a series of demonstrated exercises to improve your painting technique. To get the most out of the event and to enable real conversations to take place, the number of places is limited to maximum of 15 per event. Gordon has agreed to hold these masterclasses to help fundraise for the Friends of Horsham Museum watercolour fund. Pre-booking is essential for both events. In Conversation takes place on the September 24 , 10.30am to 12 noon with donations towards the Fund and With Brush in Hand takes place on October 15 , 1.30pm to 5pm. north, and improve drainage. Surface improvements will be made to the route from Botolphs Bridge to the cement works in Shoreham. The first phase of works was completed north of the Shoreham flyover in January. The route has been closed on weekdays since September 12.

The final phase of works is expected to take four weeks to complete. During this period no alternative routes will be available via the public rights of way network. However the route will remain open for public use on weekends. The work coincides with West Sussex County Council’s Beautiful Outdoors programme –a wider project designed to upgrade access to the South Downs National Park in West Sussex. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, John O’Brien, said: “The latest resurfacing works will upgrade the Downs Link southern route connecting Steyning and Shoreham. “Users will find the path easier to access and the improved drainage will prevent puddles forming.”

All set for tennis in Horsham

Tennis in Horsham is being changed to get more local people to play. Horsham Lawn Tennis Club has been selected as Horsham District Council’s priority coaching provider at the Horsham Park courts for an initial period of three years. The council says this is with a view to encouraging more local people to play tennis across the whole sector of the local community. Casual player access to the courts will remain an important feature but the council, in partnership with Horsham Tennis Club and the Lawn Tennis Association, says it is set to drive more formal opportunities to play tennis. For adults the initial programmes will include Tennis Tuesdays for ladies, 60+ social tennis, general social tennis sessions and lunchtime tennis targeting local employees. Most programmes will be pay-as-yougo and not require pre-booking.

For juniors there will also be an extensive initial programme with a progressive line-up of red, orange, green and yellow ball sessions, consistent with the LTA’s recommended player development model. Existing Sunday morning junior sessions run by

The stronger, broad new range of tennis programmes will greatly improve our community based tennis offer in the town Marlow Sports on the courts will continue. There are also plans to introduce a social tennis league sys-

tem, school competitions, family sessions and tennis-based fitness sessions. The Horsham Park courts are undergoing an extensive makeover. The improvements include new fencing and re-surfacing and the introduction of flood lighting which will increase the capacity of the facility to accommodate all the new programmes. A new access gate system has already been installed, linked to the LTA recommended Clubspark facility management system. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “This is further good news for tennis in Horsham. Walkers offered digital routes Steyning is one of the areas featured in ten new specially mapped digital walks this autumn. Developed by iFootpath, a digital walking guide business, the 10 walks are mapped via GPS and are available on the West Sussex Weekends website at www.westsussex-weekends.com. Taking in coast and countryside across the county, each walk can be followed in real time by downloading the iFootpath app, or as a PDF. To make it more personal, each of the walks has its own storyteller who gives a personal insight into the route and their experience of it. It is the second batch of walks produced by iFootpath and really gives a flavour of all that West Sussex has to offer, meaning there are now 20 available to choose from on the West Sussex

Weekends website. Leader of West Sussex County Council Louise Goldsmith said: “Although the school term has just begun many families are already looking at what to do for half-term. These 10 walks are well worth a look. They are of different lengths and there’s something for all level of walker, not to mention a great day out in West Sussex. “And best of all, walking in our wonderful West Sussex coast and countryside is free to do! We’re blessed with some of the most beautiful landscapes, all on our doorstep but how many of us take the time to explore it all? With these walks you’re taken on a step-by-step route.” The walks cover many parts of West Sussex including West Chiltington and Nutbourne, Balcombe and Ardingly Reservoir, Steyning and Chanctonbury. They also show places to stop

off and enjoy refreshments enroute, many of them using local produce. Walkers can print the maps as a PDF for free or download the iFootpath App, for Apple and Android devices, for a one-off price of £1.49. The West Sussex Weekends website was launched last year as part of the Beautiful Outdoors campaign, to help boost tourism in West Sussex and to support the local economy. As well as the walks, the website offers ways to plan your visit, activities and food and drink. The walk relating to Steyning can be found at http://www.westsussex-weekends.com/marktakes-a-stroll-back-in-time The Balcombe walk can be found at http://www.westsussex-weekends.com/a-bit-ofeverything-

Turner comes to Horsham For the first time in its history Horsham is to exhibit a painting by the famous artist Turner. It will feature in the new art exhibition called In Pursuit of the Watercolour at Horsham Museum, running from tomorrow until October 15. The month-long celebration will showcase the medium of watercolour, which is said to be radical and difficult to do well yet attempted by millions every year in Britain and beyond. Along with the early work by Turner, which shows how precocious his talent was, will be works by other greats in the pantheon of well-known British watercolour artists from Rowlandson, Varley, De Wint, through to John Piper,

and right up to modern day award winning artists, Gordon Rushmer (see story on this page)and Roxby Bott. Starting with late medieval colouring, through to the 17th century map and on to the Golden Age, this exhibition, which was only possible through the generous support of Washington-based Toovey’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers , is a never to be repeated opportunity. More than 40 watercolours from four private collectors and also Worthing Borough Council’s Worthing Museum and Art Gallery feature in the exhibition. Alison Smith, a leading authority on watercolours from Tate Britain , will open the exhibition.

Hundreds seek work at Jobs and Skills Fair

Managing Director Davey Pearson

More than 600 jobseekers made tracks for Horsham’s second Jobs and Skills Fair, of which the District Post was one of the sponsors. They were able to talk to nearly 40 potential employers at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham. A total of 650 people from Horsham and beyond discussed job vacancies, apprenticeships and voluntary opportunities, and amongst the employers taking part was Horsham based engineering firm Trend Control Systems, who offer an exceptional apprenticeship scheme for young

engineers. Dunelm, the soft furnishings store which is moving into Horsham Town Centre before Christmas, was looking to fill up to 60 vacancies said that at least half of that number were likely to have been filled as a direct result of the Jobs Fair. Horsham District Council’s Economic Development team organised the event in partnership with Horsham Jobcentre Plus, the District Post newspaper and Collyer’s College. Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr. Gordon Lindsay opened the event saying that

Horsham District Council wanted to encourage its local businesses to grow and helping them find the right staff was a key way of doing that. He said: “There appear to be plenty of jobs and apprenticeship vacancies around and the aim of the Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair is to bring local people together with employers to fill those vacancies. “We are pleased that the event has been a brilliant success and that many of these vacancies will be filled and more people will be in work as a result’. District Post Managing Direc-

tor Davey Pearson said: “ There was great response from people seeking work and also firms offering opportunities. The whole session was extremely positive and the Post was delighted to support such a constructive event.” For more information about the employers present at this year’s Jobs and Skills Fair and about Employment and Skills at Horsham District Council in general visit https://www.horsham.gov.uk/jobs-and-careers or contact Leigh Chambers at the council by email at leigh.chambers@horsham.gov.uk

We will rock you with Supreme Queen

Supreme Queen have been paying homage to the world’s most theatrical and dramatic rock band since 1995. Front man, Scott Maley, plays an uncannily realistic ‘Freddy’ with just the right look, stage persona and,

most importantly of all, the most incredibly powerful voice! Featuring an enormously talented band, including Nathan Mathers, who brings all the electric guitar virtuosity required to play a very convincing Brian May,

their attention to detail is truly impressive. Scott’s natural resemblance to Freddie, coupled with his amazing voice, lifts the show onto another level. As the frontman of the band, Scott has always had an ambition to perform a complete Queen show. Their ethos was to recreate the Queen ‘live experience’ by making shows as authentic as possible, using accurate costumes, instruments and by performing live concert versions of the songs. The band has gone from strength to strength and is now regarded by many as the UK’s Number One Queen Tribute Band. They have progressed to performing and topping the bill at many prestigious venues, including major theatres, concert halls and festivals throughout the UK, Europe and Asia. “I got the fright of my life when I saw Freddie, backstage, he looked just like the real thing. He went on stage and he gave a blistering performance, winding the crowd up song by song. Nice one.” Janice Long – BBC Radio 2 Don’t miss your opportunity to see them appear in Horsham on September 23 at 7.30pm! PETs POST Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

Pet owners’ thoughts turn to Bonfire night abbi moon RSPCA

As November glimmers on the horizon my thoughts are turning to Bonfire night. My daughter, husband and I love attending the public displays that Horsham has to offer. We also live in a neighbourhood where many people choose to have firework displays in their gardens. As a new bunny owner, I’m conscious that all these flashes and bangs can be extremely stressful for animals many of whom must feel like the world is coming to an end as the sky quakes and lights burn bright in the night. Now is the time that we need to start making preparations for our pets to be able to cope a little better with the stress of fireworks season. For animals housed outside, consider if you have an indoor space you can bring the animals safely into your house, a shed or garage.

You could play a radio (no louder than conversational level) to help mask the noise of the fireworks and leave a light on to disguise the flashes. If you are unable to bring your animals inside, can you move the hutch to face a patio window? Place the hutch as close to the window as possible, leave the curtains open and lights on the sight of you may give your pets some comfort. Windows on shedstyle housing and mesh fronts on traditional hutches can be covered to shut out the sight of the flashes. Runs could be draped with an old duvet, piece of carpet or tarpaulin to block the light from the fireworks. For small animals housed inside or outside, a small cardboard box with an entrance hole and stuffed with hay is an ideal retreat to hide away from scary nights. Cardboard tunnels and pipes can also provide a bolt hole for them. Provide lots of extra bedding so they can burrow into it if they need to. For dogs, if you haven’t already, now is the time to start using sound therapy, like ‘Sounds Scary’ and speak to your vet about phero-

mone therapy like Adaptil. If your dog has extreme reactions to fireworks, then speak to your vet about what other interventions may be suitable. Now is also the time to start to think about making subtle changes to your dog’s routine walking them before it is dark or at least earlier in the evening when fireworks are less likely. Cats can also be affected by fireworks. Try to keep them in the house once it’s dusk. Keep a radio or TV on (not too loud, just at normal conversational level), curtains drawn and lights on. Give them plenty of hiding places and don’t be tempted to try to tempt them out of their hiding places as this could make them more stressed. Make sure you are aware when organised displays are on so you can be extra prepared on those evenings. If you are of thinking of having fireworks in your own garden this year, spare a thought for animals both pets and wildlife. Why not attend one of your local public displays instead. The fireworks are bound to better and less stressful for you too

Bake-Off inspires Barking Mad search for Top Dog Chef

The humans at Barking Mad Gatwick, a local service provider of 5* rated dog care, are avid viewers of television programmes featuring edible content and confess a certain weakness for home-baked delicacies. As dog lovers though, they feel that it is very unfair that their canine friends are missing out on all the action, because home-baked produce isn’t just for people! The rise in popularity of televi-

sion cookery contests, in recent years, has been meteoric. A staggering 13.4 million viewers tuned in to last year’s Great British Bake Off final, according to BARB figures, with shows, such as Master Chef, also proving immensely popular. Many of us enjoy baking delicious cakes, scones and puddings at home, but when it comes to our pets though, how many of us reach for a pack of ready made treats without even considering

what we could make as an alternative? The dog holiday specialists have decided to introduce a fun challenge to find the best recipes for homemade, healthy dog treats. The recipes will be tried and tested, before being presented to a very selective canine judging panel! Barking Mad Gatwick are inviting customers, host families and visitors to their website: https:// www.barkingmad.uk.com/franchisees/gatwick/ and Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ BarkingMadDogCareGatwick/ to submit details of their canine, culinary masterpieces, with photos or even video footage. Using the hashtag #BarkingMadBakeOff for a chance to be awarded the honour of becoming their top dog chef! The leading pet sitting company hopes that dog lovers will be inspired to don their chef’s hat, bring out their baking bowl and have fun making tasty, healthy snacks for their favourite dog. You don’t have to be an expert baker, it’s all about trying new recipes and enjoying treating your dog!

Mike is RSPCA Superstar at Animal Hero Awards Hero Mike

An RSPCA officer from the Horsham area continued to catch animal abusers during his own cancer battle. Mike Butcher’s dedication as an undercover RSPCA officer spending 30 years of his life catching dog fighters and badger baiters has won him RSPCA Superstar of the Year at this year’s Animal Hero Awards. Chief inspector Mike is recognised as being the man who revealed Britain’s dog fighting shame after the bloodsport gained increasing popularity three decades ago, before leading countless successful investigations into some of the most serious cases the RSPCA has ever handled. He was presented with the prestigious RSPCA Superstar of the Year award at the Animal Hero Awards, hosted by the Daily Mirror and RSPCA at Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The panel of judges, which included McFly’s Tom Fletcher and radio presenter Nicky Campbell, praised Mike for his dedication, which saw him continue to investigate some of the most serious crimes against animals while fighting, and winning, his own battle with cancer. Mike, the RSPCA’s longest serving frontline office with more than 44 years service, said he was overwhelmed to have been given the award. He said: “I feel humbled because there were some amazing nominations in the

same category. I get paid to do my job, but some of the other nominees don’t, they’re volunteers. “The dog fighting scene is a very dangerous and very violent scene. We’ve had some pretty scary moments over the years. “I’ve had my nose broken in a one-to-one with a dog fighter in his prison cell, I’ve been threatened by Irish terrorist groups and there was a contract put out on my life by a London gangster. “People were coming up to me saying they were shocked by what they’d heard about and didn’t realise that crimes like dog fighting and badger baiting continue to happen to this day. “Even now RSPCA inspectors from the Special Operations Unit will be out there trying to catch the people involved. “I’ve had a fantastic 44 years, but hopefully there will be many more still to come.” Mike, who lives near the RSPCA’s headquarters in Southwater, joined the charity in 1973 and was originally posted to York and then Alnwick as a uniformed inspector. He then joined the Special Operations Unit, which is dedicated to investigating organised animal crime, in 1980. He is now recognised as the UK’s leading expert on dog fighting. Mike was presented with his award by TV personality and Animal Hero Awards judge Lucy Watson.

How to spot Cushing’s Disease Cushing’s Disease, which is common is dogs, is unfortunately very tricky to diagnose and is often discovered through a mix of symptom assessments and blood tests. There are three types of Cushing’s disease, two of them caused by glandular tumours, which in turn cause the adrenal glands to overproduce the hormone cortisol, which regulates various metabolic processes. Signs are many and varied and include excessive drinking, excessive urination, panting, poor muscle tone, a pot belly, thinning of the skin, and the prevalence of typically minor infections. Hyperadrenocorticism or

Cushing’s disease, also known as Cushing’s syndrome, is a common endocrine disease of middle-aged dogs responsible for a wide variety of symptoms associated with increased secretion of the hormone cortisol from the adrenal glands. With Cushing’s disease, dogs’ adrenal glands will produce too much cortisol either because of a tumour in the pituitary gland (which stimulates the adrenal gland’s cortisol-producing tissue) or, less commonly, a tumour in the adrenal gland itself. A third type of Cushing’s disease is “iatrogenic Cushing’s disease” or “iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism.” This occurs

when dogs or cats have been exposed to quantities of cortisollike steroids over time, therefore eliciting the same symptoms as naturally occurring Cushing’s. As previously mentioned, a wide array of symptoms can be attributed to the excess of cortisol in the body. Excessive drinking, urination, muscle wasting, a pot-bellied appearance, a thinning of the skin, the prevalence of typically minor infections. Unfortunately, most symptoms of Cushing’s are nonspecific. This often makes for an insidious onset, difficult identification, and delayed diagnosis relative to other diseases. Diagnosis is usually made based on screening

tests that suggest the possibility of excess cortisol secretion. Confirmation is achieved through one or two challenge tests that measure the secretion of cortisol once injectable hormones are supplied. Measuring cortisol is not an effective enough approach, given the hormone’s fluctuating presence in the bloodstream. That’s why ACTH stimulation and low-dose Dexamethasone challenge tests are used. These tests may also be used to discriminate between the two types of Cushing’s. Though a direct connection to inheritance has not been established, it’s widely suspected that a genetic predisposition to

Cushing’s disease exists due to the prevalence of the disease in certain breeds. Cushing’s is more prevalent in the Poodle, Dachshund, German Shepherd, and terriers such as Yorkies and Dandie Dinmonts. The Boxer, Boston Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Australian Shepherd, Maltese, and Cocker Spaniel may also be predisposed. Treatment is usually medical although surgical options are available . Medical treatment consists of daily tablets and is usually quite successful. If you dog is showing any of the symptoms associated with this disease then do ask your vet for advice

Dogs take the lead for charity Dog owners and their pets will hit the trail as the The Southwater based RSPCA in north Sussex hosts a sponsored dog walk. The walk, held in partnership with Vitality health and life insurance, will take place in Borde Hill Gardens near Haywards Heath on October 2 at 11.30am, with a choice of a 3k or 5k walk. Dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome and will even get their own bandana to wear on the day. In May, 2,000 dogs and nearly 6,000 people enjoyed four flagship Big Walkies at Alexandra Palace, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Cardiff . Throughout September and October there are 35 regional events taking place which you can sign up to here www.rspca.org.uk/ dogwalk RSPCA branch chair Anita Marsland said: “This is a great opportunity for the community to come together to get behind a

good cause. “We are a nation of animal lovers and this is a great opportunity to make lots of new doggy friends - and human ones too. “We hope that on 2nd October the whole parkland will be filled with calls of ‘Walkies’ and sights of wagging tails.” Some of the RSPCA’s star rescue dogs are taking part in Big Walkies. One of the dogs taking part in Borde Hill Gardens will be Jess who is looking for a new home. To register please visit www. rspca.org.uk/dogwalk and fill out a quick and simple form with a few details. It costs £10 for one dog and £5 for any additional pooches - humans can come along free. Online ticket purchase closes 14 days before the event. Once you’ve registered, you will receive a Big Walkies Participant Pack with everything you need to know about Big Walkies.

Why shouldn’t I throw a stick? Dogs love to carry and chew sticks. However, stick related injuries in dogs are common and very occasionally can be life threatening. Twigs can get wedged in the roof of the mouth or between teeth causing discomfort and ulceration. Throwing sticks for your dog can result in them running at speed to catch the stick, one wrong move, and there is the potential for them to be injured. Common injuries include

penetration of the mouth, throat, chest and tongue. Why should I get my dog checked by a vet? Throwing sticks for your dog can result in serious injury. As a dog runs to pick up a stick at speed injuries can occur if the

stick enters the mouth end on. We see a variety of injuries when this happens often there are tears under the tongue or in the throat and sometimes fragments of stick may be trapped in these pockets. Sometimes these pieces of stick

can migrate further into the body, down the neck or even as far as the chest. Advanced imaging such as CT scans may be required if standard investigations such as x-rays or endoscopy fail to identify the piece of stick.

Depending on the severity of the injury, antibiotics and pain relief may be prescribed for minor injuries but exploratory surgery could be required in severe cases. If your dog likes to chase sticks then alternatives such as the Kong safe stick can be used.

Underlying pain must be considered Underlying muscle pain can be a trigger for aggressiveness in dogs and must be considered in cases of dangerous behaviour, a canine expert has said. Julia Robertson, the founder of the Galen Therapy Centre in Sussex, which treats dogs suffering from musculoskeletal pain, has spoken out about the links between underlying conditions in canines and attacks, in the light of the RSPCA’s report into the Dangerous Dogs Act. In its paper, the animal charity claims the act – introduced in the UK in 1991 – is failing both dogs and the public and is now calling on the Government to overhaul the legislation, and build a better understanding of why dogs bite. Julia says underlying muscle pain in dogs, often suffered in silence, needs to be considered when looking at the legislation, as it could well be a trigger for out of character behaviour and aggression. She said: “Dogs cannot communicate their pain to us clearly, so if they are suffering from a chronic condition, it will often present itself in different ways. A lack of tolerance, avoidance of touch or grooming and aggressive or defensive interactions with other people and dogs are all indicators your pet could be suffering from musculoskeletal pain.” Julia, who has been working with dogs for 14 years, treats canines suffering from chronic pain and arthritis through myotherapy – a specialised ‘hands on’ manual muscle treatment. Her mission is to provide a solution for dogs that may otherwise be facing euthanasia. She added: “Dogs could have been suffering muscle pain that could have contributed to an attack and sadly, in many cases, these beloved pets are put down. Of course, underlying pain is not the cause of aggression in every case, but is certainly a consideration. “At the Galen Therapy Centre, we believe no dog should have to be put down unnecessarily, if it is simply suffering from muscle pain, that may not be solved through traditional medical treatments.” For more information about the RSPCA’s report visit www.rspca. org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/ dogownership/bsl

Gas safety ‘a serious issue’ for landlords

Landlords across the UK have been given an annual reminder of their responsibilities when it comes to ensuring the gas safety of tenanted properties. Gas Safety Week, which is running from 19th to 25th September, aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of having gas appliances

checked and maintained by a qualified engineer. More than 6,500 organisations have teamed up with the Gas Safe Register to highlight the importance of annually checking all gas appliances, with the intention of protecting tenants from the threat posed

by poorly maintained gas appliances. Carole Charge, technical and compliance director at property specialist Leaders, says: “Gas safety is a serious issue and failure to tackle it appropriately can lead to disastrous consequences, so we support valuable initiatives such as Gas Safety Week that aim to raise awareness and keep homes safe. “The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 state it is the responsibility of the landlord to protect their tenants when it comes to ensuring gas appliances, fittings and chimneys or flues are safe. “It is not all about simply maintaining gas supplies and appliances and carrying out repairs when required. Landlords must also have an annual gas safety inspection carried out in their properties and provide a record of all gas safety checks to their tenants within 28 days, or to new tenants upon the start of

a tenancy.” Individual appliances should be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance, while it is also crucial that all work in a rental property is carried out by a certified Gas Saferegistered engineer. Carole adds: “One way for landlords to take the weight off their shoulders when it comes to dealing with gas safety is to work with a reputable and professional letting agents. “At Leaders, we take care of gas safety in every property we manage, ensuring homes are safe for tenants and that our landlords comply with all relevant legislation. We only use Gas Safe-registered engineers and ensure comprehensive records of all work are kept.” For more information on gas safety or to find out how Leaders can help to manage an investment property, contact your local branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

Love where you live? Community-focused video competition deadline extended LoveLivingIn2016Amateur filmmakers with a passion for where they live have been given an extra two weeks to create a short video showing the best of their hometown and potentially win a £1,000 top prize. National estate agents Leaders is currently running its Love living in competition and, due to popular demand, is extending its deadline for videos to Monday 3rd October. Allison Thompson, managing director at Leaders, says: “We have received some fantastic entries so far showing the best of lots of different cities, towns, villages across the UK, but there are many more locations we would love people to share with us as part of Love living in. Due to the high level of interest we have seen in the closing weeks of the competition we have extended the deadline by two weeks so there is still time to get your video to us.” The winner of the competition will receive a £1,000 top prize in addition to a further £1,000 for a charity or community group* of their choice. There will also be prizes of £500 plus £500 for a charity or community group for the winners of the People’s Choice, which is decided by social media shares, and Best Film by a Young Person categories. Allison explains: “All videos must be no longer than three minutes, so it only takes a few minutes and the use of a smartphone or tablet to capture footage of the things you love most about your hometown. “There is still time to secure our fabulous prize and entering Love living in could not be easier!” All videos must now be received by Monday 3rd October and the three prize winners will be notified by Monday 17th October. For more information on Love living in, to view previous entries or to submit your video, visit lovelivingin.co.uk. *Community groups include schools, colleges, universities, sports and recreation clubs, charities and voluntary groups

Jolyon Palmer suffers misfortune once again Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer again suffered from issues with his car and as with so many times this season it resulted in him being unable to make a serious challenge and to get into the points at last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix. Palmer had to make an early pit stop due to picking up a slow

puncture after running over debris on the track at the start of the race, the Southwater driver then ran the remainder of the race out of sequence, eventually finishing in fifteenth place. Palmer’s Renault Sport team mate Kevin Magnussen however recorded the team’s second highest finish of the season with tenth position. “That was a tough race and we

didn’t have any breaks come our way. I lost out with the shenanigans at the start and probably collected some debris as I had an early slow puncture too. The positive from today is we’ve seen that there’s still scope to get points if everything goes your way; that’s what I’m gunning for in Sepang.” Palmer’s next race will be at the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit on October 2.

Young Horsham in tough Barnes battle Louisa Denman and her Horsham midfield teammates had a tiring match

South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Barnes Ladies 3 - 0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter A young, new look Horsham side battled hard against strong, well drilled opposition at Barnes, especially in the second half. Horsham fought right to the end

but finished on the losing side, the host’s experience providing too daunting a challenge. Despite Barnes being two nil up at the break Horsham exhibited some impressive moves, created goal scoring opportunities and kept Barnes at bay, only conceding a single goal in the second half, Elle Blakesley telling the District Post : “We’ve got quite a different team this year includ-

ing some great young players very keen to step up to the firsts. We have real potential as a team, but it will probably take us a little time to gel as a unit. We are making progress, however, and demonstrated that with some good play throughout the match, but Barnes are a useful team and were the stronger side on the day. It was very pleasing to see us holding off a lot of pressure, our Captain Hannah Simpson had a good game in goal, making some crucial saves and special mention should be made of some great young players coming through on debut - Gee Humphreys, Lea Pritchard, Bella Little and Gemma Murphy, playing alongside seasoned regulars like Lauren Burroughs who directed a forward line including Alicia Remfry. Our midfield was more experienced: Suzy Clapp, Louisa Denman and myself doing plenty of running! And defenders CJ White, Gemma Gee, Joy How and Heidi Menniss frustrated many Barnes forays.” Tomorrow (Saturday) the ladies are at Broadbridge Heath for a 1.30 start in their first home game of the new season - against Maidenhead, who are yet to open their campaign.

London 2 South East Hove 17 - 24 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last May Horsham beat Hove 26-20 in the tightly contested Bob Rogers Sussex Cup Final at Lewes and in last Saturday’s league game the result was the same, despite an early scare. Horsham Captain Tom Johnson told us: “Hove are one of the fittest sides in the league and came at us really hard. After 10 minutes we were 12 nil down and really had to step up after that. We opened them up in mid-field and it was a credit to our tenacity that we were 14-12 up at half time and went on to win.” Head Coach Nick Stocker was equally pleased, saying: “We had a couple of enforced changes and it was great to see our team spirit and togetherness pulling us through. After the shock early setbacks we slowly but surely exerted authority as the forwards took control. Hove are looking for a top three finish, so it was highly commendable for us to beat them on their own cabbage patch.” For Horsham James Layzell, Jonny Whiting and Arun Thompson scored tries, all converted by Will Bell, who also succeeded with a penalty. Tomorrow, Saturday, Horsham return home to take on Bromley. The Kent side have lost both of their games in the new season.

Bowls Round Up Billingshurst’s Geoff Weller

Billingshurst Maltravers 97 – 77 Billingshurst A disappointing start by Billingshurst at Maltravers was one that the visitors could not recover from. 23 adrift at half-time ‘Hurst managed to arrest their decline in the second half but eventually lost by 20 shots. Top rink for Billingshurst went to guest player Doreen, Roy Lawrence & Alan Readshaw (+11). Crawley Town 42 – 51 Billingshurst Billingshurst visiting Crawley Town took an early lead helped by a pair of 4’s and broke for refreshments 8 shots ahead. Crawley Town piled on the pressure after tea but ‘Hurst grabbed another shot to win by 9. Top rink for Billingshurst went to June Bennett, Hazel Sandford & Geoff Weller (+16) Burgess Hill 58 – 81 Billingshurst Billingshurst, playing away at Burgess Hill for their penultimate game of the season, started cautiously and just edged ahead by 4 shots at tea. On resumption ‘Hurst drove away at speed and with the help of a 6, a 5 and trio of 4’s boosted their winning margin to 23. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Ken Peters, Anita Colliety & John Bennett (+20).

Horsham Bowling Club Horsham are coming near the end of the season but there are still some good friendly games to play. A home mixed triples match took place over 5 rinks against Ewhurst. Horsham seemed to struggle against some good players and finally went down 73 - 87, with only one winning rink and one drawn. Horsham then travelled to Henfield with success on 3 of 5 rinks, winning 99 - 88 in a closely fought contest. Top rink for Horsham was Kris Sanger, Ken Geary, Tony Male and skip Mick Norris. The week ended in defeat as Horsham were beaten 56 - 87 by a mixed team from St Frances. Horsham Park Horsham Park 78 – 73 Ewhurst Playing at home against Ewhurst, Park enjoyed a narrow win by 5 shots. Park won well on 2 of the 5 rinks but marginally lost the other 3. Park’s top rink was skipped by David Peters with Angela Spurr and Martin Bryant who won by 17 shots, 24 to 7. Horsham Park 53 – 68 Felbridge Park lost their home game against Felbridge by 15 shots and were only able to win on 1 of the 4 rinks, losing by various margins on the other 3. Park’s top and only winning rink, skipped by Brenda Thompson with Kamran Nadim and Pauline Topper, won by 4 shots, 15 – 11. Southgate Park 72 – 71 Horsham Park Playing away at Southgate, Park lost by 1 shot, but the game could have gone either way with Park winning on 2 and losing 2 of the 4 rinks. Both teams had 1 rink that ran away and won by large margins. One of Park’s newer bowlers, Kamran Nadim, playing as skip for the first time, had a great win. Nadim with Marie Davies and Norma Covey dominated their game winning by 31 shots to Southgate’s 9.

Pulborough impress with another robust win London 3 South East Pulborough 14 - 10 Haywards Heath Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough delighted their home supporters with a strong win against Haywards Heath, who had seen off Gillingham Anchorians 25 nil the week before. Boro President Alex Steele said: “We’re not reading too much into early season results - realistically we’re looking for a top four finish with some steady improvement but are very pleased to have opened our season so well, especially as the youngsters that we’ve

blooded have really stepped up to the mark.” For Boro Nick Haynes and Sam Aviss scored tries with Frazer OliphantHope obliging with the conversions. Heath responded with a maximised try and a penalty, Head Coach Clayton Saunders telling the District Post: “We had a great first half up the hill, but weren’t quite so good with the wind behind us after the break, when we gave away too many penalties. We’ve got areas to work on but winning both of our first two games is a dream start. We go to Kent tomorrow (Saturday) to take on Aylesford Bulls – they’ve lost both of their games so far, so we’re hoping to make it three from three!”

Golf Cottesmore Veterans played two competitions in one round on one of the hottest days of the year. Over 45 golfers took part in the Scratch Trophy and the Dave Roberts Handicap Trophy. The Scratch Trophy started in 1986 and has been played annually since then with the Dave Roberts taking the same results to identify the

handicapped results. The Scratch Trophy was won by Bob Sparks with a gross score of 89 strokes and with handicaps applied the Dave Roberts Trophy was won by Ron Vance with 93 strokes minus his 23 handicap to give a net score of 70. The Cottesmore Veterans Golf Society meets every Tuesday and this was one of a selection of competitions throughout the season.

Much is made of Horsham’s record in Kent with a series of poor results suffered there over a number of years. However this season’s bad habits of losing the lead and of hesitancy in defence will cause the Hornets problems irrespective of the county they are playing in unless they resolve the issues quickly. The small travelling support would have been pleased to see Tony Nwachukwu in the starting line-up but a quick purposeful start from the home side would also have given them cause for concern. Early pressure from Sittingbourne resulted in chances for both Tom Brunt and Miles Cornwell; both players will know they should have scored. At the other end Scott Kirkwood had a speculative effort easily saved by

home ‘keeper Ben Bridle-Card but with all the play in the Horsham half more clear cut chances went begging as the unmarked Dan Tanner headed wide and Miles Cornwell fired over when in acres of space. It was totally against the run of play when on 27 minutes Terry Dodd pulled the ball back for Lee Carney who found the net to give the Hornets a surprise lead. As is common this season however Horsham failed to keep the advantage and it took just 60 seconds for the host’s to equalise as Cornwell played in Stefan Wright who shot through Josh Pelling’s legs to quickly level the score. Just 4 minutes had passed when Horsham conceded a second, again hesitant defending was at the root of it. With Horsham inexplicably backing off the advancing Wright the Sittingbourne midfielder was allowed to reach the by-line and cross for Cornwell to volley the ball past Pelling for 2-1. It could have been a lot worse for Horsham given the early missed chances and then once again Sittingbourne let the

Hornets off the hook just before the break when Jordan Gallagher headed a simple chance wide. Despite this and within 2 minutes of the restart Tony Nwachukwu forced a fine save from ‘keeper Brindle-Card but at the other end skipper Ashley Jones blocked a certain goal on the line. Sittingbourne continued to have the better of the play before half chances fell to both sides; but it was a fluke goal that gave Horsham the leveller. A Terry Dodd corner was caught in the strong wind, deceiving everyone, before hitting the post and crossing the line, giving the Hornets a fortunate equaliser. The joy was short lived for Horsham as again they allowed the opposition back in – parity lasting for just 5 minutes as some more poor defending allowed Cornwell to score his second of the match from close range. A badly timed tackle in the dying minutes from Dodd earned the Horsham striker a second yellow card to complete a miserable day in North Kent.

Heath, with 3 goals in a 10 minute second half spell, returned to winning ways with a victory at Newhaven. Dan Attwater almost gave Steve Painters side an early lead but despite a dominant start by Heath it was the home team who took the lead on 7 minutes when a free-kick found an unmarked David Altendorff who tapped in from 4 yards. Heath got back into it when Attwater collected the ball in his own half and delivered a long pass for Jake Holmes to run through on goal. The Heath player just beat the outrushing Newhaven ‘keeper Jake Buss to the ball to give the visitors a deserved equaliser. Newhaven, with the strong gusting wind at their backs, started the second half well and Scott Taylor shot just wide of the post. Midway through the half Tiago Andrade, wide on the left, slipped a pass inside to Holmes who turned and hit a left foot shot in one movement which was handled on its way to goal and Holmes coolly converted the resulting penalty. Minutes later it became three when Jamal Sultan burst through the Newhaven defence

and was tripped in the box. The Newhaven bench protested strongly about the decision and after waiting for the fuss to die down Holmes took the penalty to complete his second hat-trick of the season. Heath scored a fourth in the 75th minute when a Piers McDermott free-kick was met by the head of Stuart Chester giving Buss no chance. Newhaven pulled a consolation goal back in the 3rd minute of added time. Heath manager Steve Painter was delighted with his team’s performance, saying, “It’s

It’s never easy coming down to Newhaven who are always a wellorganized side and hard to beat never easy coming down to Newhaven who are always a well-organized side and hard to beat and today I had to change the entire back four with Joe Holvey, Marlon Maxwell, Andy Howard and Jamie Robinson all missing but those who came in did a brilliant job”. He praised Man of the Match Dan Attwater saying, “Dan has been brilliant for us, he came in to help us through our injury crisis and today he was superb”.

Horsham hold out for third win of the season Dodd slams home Horsham’s first from the penalty spot

Terry Dodd rises above the Three Bridges defence to head at goal

Ryman League Division One South Three Bridges 1 – 2 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor After taking a two goal lead early in the second half, only for Three Bridges to pull a goal back and then turn the screw, the fear was that Horsham would again let a decent lead turn into defeat. On Tuesday night however they held firm to come away from their local rivals with all 3 points. The first half finished goalless but it was not for the want of trying, from both sides. The game

was a typical local derby and with

keeper Josh Pelling was also on top form and thwarted a number of attempt’s

Junior Football Round Up Horsham Sparrows U10 team

Crawley Utd U13 0 - 5 Chesworth Rovers U13 Looking to defend their championship title, Chesworth Rovers U13’s took to the road to play Crawley Utd. Zander Thirkettle opened the scoring for Chesworth when he smashed home a free kick. Nyle Barton then scored for a second week in a row with a cracking top draw strike. The second half continued with Chesworth Rovers on top as Harry Sutton forced an own goal from

the Crawley defence, and then in a frantic four minute spell, Fletch Russell and Tom Miller both scored from two terrific crosses from Toby Shepheard. Horsham Sparrows U8 – The team played Chesworth and despite a small squad, every player put in 100% effort, although during the first game they conceded 11 goals with Hugo getting one back late on. The second game was much different and they played with more confidence put-

two ex-Hornets in the home side - Alan Tait and Kieran Thorp and Horsham’s Lee Carney playing against the club he left last season - there was added spice. Tait came close to scoring in the first period while Thorp in goal pulled off a string of saves to deny Dan Sackman, Terry Dodd and Scott Kirkwood. Not to be outshone by his opposite number Horsham ‘keeper Josh Pelling was also on top form and thwarted a number of attempt’s, notably from Tait and Callum Donaghey. Despite the all action end to end first 45 minutes somehow the sides went in with a 0-0 half time stalemate. The second half continued in

ting together some great passing and scored 3 goals through Lucas, Finn and Elliott. Horsham Sparrows U13 – Sparrows were always in control in this away match with Ashington Cougars. They were 0 – 5 up at half-time with the final score being 0 – 8. Goals came from Ollie, four, Gusztav 2, Noah and Louis. MoM: Ollie Horsham Sparrows U16 – A tough away fixture saw the team get a valuable point with a 2-2 draw at Ashington. Despite taking a 2 goal lead, the hosts were unable to contain a strong Sparrows team who secured the draw with goals from Luke and MoM, Martin Horsham Sparrows U11 girls – In their second match day the girls produced two outstanding performances beating Worthing and Rustington in the 3 way matches arranged by the league. Strong performances all round were capped off by some great football which was played in an excellent spirit by all 3 teams. Horsham Sparrows U18 Girls – The U18 girls had a tough first match of the season away to Newhaven. Only able to field nine players, they held their own well in the first half despite an early Newhaven goal. Lucy Hubbard’s second goal for Sparrows brought the score to 3–2 and victory seemed possible. However, on a hot day and against a team with plenty of substitutes in the end they lost 6–2. The defeat belies a valiant and skilful performance.

the same vein as the first with both sides going at each other from the whistle with both ‘keepers again needing to be at their best to keep parity. The first goal when it did come was from a very dubious penalty decision given by referee Read in the53rd minute. Amid a scramble in the area the referee – to the disgust of the home side – saw what he deemed to be a foul and pointed to the spot. Dodd duly stepped up and blasted the penalty kick past Thorp. Three minutes later and Horsham were two up. Tom Lawley hit a great ball into the box from where George Branford’s was saved by Thorpe but the

loose ball fell to Alex Duncan who scored from close range. Now jerked into life and filled with desperation the home side piled forward looking to get back into the game and on 70 minutes they pulled a goal back when Tait stretched to connect with a cross and beat Pelling. The last 20 minutes was one-way traffic as Bridges pounded the Hornets goal, even a generous 5 minutes added time failing to make any difference; unlike of late, Horsham held out for the win. Horsham are in a comfortable 13th place ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday 24) home fixture against Walton Casuals.

YM hit four against Worthing United SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 4 – 1 Worthing United Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor

Worthing came to Gorings Mead with the intention of making full use of their physical size but despite some hefty challenges and an over enthusiastic referee YM’s passing game saw them record a good home win. YM Captain Ashley Dugdale got on the end of some good play from Dave Brown in the 16th minute to head past Frazer Trigwell in the visitors goal and to give his side a deserved lead. Five minutes later and YM had doubled their lead when after some neat build up play Sam Schaaf crossed into the area where the waiting YM striker Phil Johnson gave Trigwell no chance for 2-0. The last 10 minutes of the half saw a desperate Worthing force YM into some resolute defending but

the home side held out and took the two goal advantage into the break. The outstanding Dave Brown had a shot just wide of the post and the same player superbly found substitute Nick Sullivan, who also just missed the target. After a period where Worthing had come back into the match Sullivan finished things as a contest in the 65th minute when he placed a free kick past Trigwell for 3-0. Minutes later Johnson grabbed his second and his team’s fourth goal of the game for a big well deserved win despite United scoring a late consolation in the 80th minute. Manager Peter Buckland comented, “We had control of the game from start to finish, which enabled us to make the changes we wanted such as introducing George Hole for his debut. Tom Gilbert led the back line well, and we would have had another clean sheet as their goal seemed to be offside.”
