The rink will be a whopping 30x20m real ice skating rink, giving Guildford’s permanent Spectrum centre a run for their money. Fully enclosed inside a weatherproof building and with a separate warm break-out area, skaters can enjoy the fun whatever the weather. Utilising the free space of Camping World’s massive tent display area which normally sits empty in the winter months, Horsham Outdoor Events have successfully bid for grant funding from West Sussex County Council’s Coast to Capital business growth funding to help with initial capital expenditure, allowing them to buy the rink and building outright. Tickets are available from www.horshamicerink.co.uk Early bookings have already been taken for birthday parties and corporate events. Kids and adults can take part in learn-to-skate lessons and parents can enjoy hot and cold drinks from the fully licensed bar on site.

Memory of four lost friends powers on John John in the saddle
phil dennett News Editor
A Horsham teacher was powered on by the memory of four lost friends as he rode 1000 miles for charity. John Dwyer hit the saddle in a gruelling cycle challenge from Barcelona and over the Pyrenees to West Sussex to help raise more than £20,000. And after he finished John
said: ““We rode the 1000 miles in memory of our friends Rob Gauntlett and James Atkinson, who both died in a climbing accident in the Alps in 2009, aged just 21. They both went to Christ’s Hospital School and Rob was the youngest Brit to climb Everest, aged just 19. We also rode to remember Vaughan Holme and Jack Hutton- Potts, who also sadly passed away whilst climbing in Wales in 2013.” John Dwyer was raising money with 40 other cyclists for the One Mile Closer

Charity. So Far he has personally raised over £900 from this venture. The charity, which was founded by the friends and families of Rob Gauntlett and James Atkinson, raises money for the Nalango Secondary School in Uganda. John said: “All of the money raised from this challenge - in excess of £20,000 - will go to Nalango School in Uganda. It will be spent on a dorm room for students, four teachers’ houses, forty bunk beds, ten laptops, sports and music equipment and
textbooks. We hope to make the world of difference to the lives of the students there.” Nalango School in Uganda was built in Rob Gauntlett’s s memory. Its inspirational Headteacher Paul Kasadha began by teaching students from beneath a mango tree, but now has more than 600 pupils and has transformed many lives. In a recent visit to Farlington School Horsham,, where John is head of geography, Paul explained that each class has 80 students sitting on long benches, they walk miles to

The annual Fresher’s Fair took place at Collyer’s in Horsham. “Fresher’s” is designed to help welcome new and returning students to the college and comprised a new record of 35 different stalls and events. The college welcomed a selection of organisations, societies, clubs and services. Sarah Hawen, Tutorial and Enrichment Manager, co-ordinated the event. She said: “Fresher’s is a really important event in the college calendar, as it showcases how the college extends its excellent curriculum programme to all students, with the added opportunity to find groups, societies, clubs and events which will enhance their time at Collyer’s. There really is something for everyone and it’s a great opportunity to enable students to meet other like-minded people.” The Fresher’s Fair gives all students the opportunity to become involved in college life and enhance their learning experience whilst at Collyer’s and gain further employability skills, beyond their academic studies and courses. The event ties into
the launch of “Collyer’s Extra”, the extra-curricular clubs, societies and groups) and “Collyer’s Active”, sport for all events and classes which are run weekly throughout the year. Organisations included Community Policing, Young Driver’s Awareness, Horsham Fire Brigade, the ‘Find It Out’ centre for young people and the Snack Wagon. Additional support services within Collyer’s also ran stalls, together with the Library staff and sport teams at Collyer’s. Jackie Fry, supporting the Collyer’s Amnesty International group, said: “There has been a great buzz as students checked out all the activities on offer. It has been a very successful two days, especially working with students on the Amnesty International stall”. There has been an extremely positive reaction to setting up an Amnesty Youth Group at Collyer’s and I’m looking forward to helping the students develop skills and acquire experience, which will prepare them for university entrance and the job market”.
do it without our fantastic stall holders and performers, our generous sponsors Domino’s Pizza, Mayo Wynne Baxter, LMC Auto Services, Harwoods, Comyn & James and Pulborough Medical Group, our volunteers and of course the local people who come along on the day.“ The fair is organised on behalf of the Pulborough Community Partnership and all monies raised go towards community charities. Organisation of the 2017 fair to be held on September 23 is already underway. So, if you are a potential stall holder or sponsor that would like to be added to the mailing list, or a volunteer interested in joining the small team of organisers, please email pulboroughharvestfair@yahoo.co.uk. David and Daniel among honoured firefighters Firefighters from Horsham and Steyning were among those honoured for their work. Crew members from West Sussex were honoured at a medal service held at Arundel Castle. Among those who received Long Service and Good Conduct Medals was David Griffin, from Horsham, who works at Crawley, and Daniel Flynn from Steyning. Others were Crawley-based John Convey and Christine Diver based at Bognor, Lee Newman, from Midhurst. Philip Pierpoint based at Haywards Heath, Neil Pocock based at Burgess Hill and Jason Ward, from Worthing. David joined Surrey Fire & Rescue Service in March 1995 then transferred to West Sussex in May 2002. He was briefly posted to Horley before transferring to Horsham, where he served for ten years before moving to Crawley. Danny has been with Steyning Fire Station since 1995, working
his way up through the ranks to become Watch Manager in 2009. He has taken on an extra role within the Service working as part of the TACT team, offering support to colleagues after dealing with traumatic incidents. This year Danny received the Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation Certificate for his involvement in the Shoreham Air Show tragedy. Two firefighters were presented with Meritorious Service Medals, awarded for 40 years of dedicated service, while ten of their colleagues were recognised for 20 years of long service and good conduct. The awards were made by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, at a special ceremony held in the historic Barons Hall in front of an invited audience of proud family and friends. Long Service and Good Conduct Medals are awarded nationally, on behalf of the Queen, to wholetime
and retained firefighters who have completed two decades of outstanding service to their community. The ceremony was opened by Acting Executive Director for Communities and Public Protection and Chief Fire Officer Lee Neale, who thanked the firefighters for their dedication and commitment to the Service and their local communities. He also paid tribute to the firefighters’ families for their invaluable and long standing support. Meritorious Service Medals were presented to: Watch Manager Nigel Gamblen, from Midhurst, and John Stone, from Chichester. A Long Service Certificate was presented to Annelise Sadler, from Waterlooville, who worked at the old West Sussex Control Centre, then for the Resilience and Emergencies Team, both based in Chichester.

Founders Mo Barker and Rosa Searles with Sue Allen A book just launched is highlighting local attractions for children. ‘Bob Bear’s Big Year’ book was launched at Partridge Green Preschool’s Golden Anniversary to a wide audience of former and existing preschool children and parents and prominent local business sponsors. Also in attendance was founder Rosa Searles with her daughter Sue Allen, who was the first child to attend the playgroup 50 years ago. The book was conceived by the PreSchool Committee and Staff and aims to raise awareness of the many local attractions for children and encourage them to get more involved in the area, whilst raising funds for the Preschool, which has just commemorated its 50th year. The book’s narrative is inspired by the adventures of ‘Bob’ the preschool bear, who the children take turns to look after and who has been taken along to hundreds of local attractions over the years. Bob follows the Southern Transit Route 3, and in one story he recounts when he was lucky enough to visit Shoreham Airport and take a flight on the plane, and visit the cockpit whilst taking some aerial photos. To find out more about Bob’s journey, and to purchase a book for just £5 please visit the website: www.partridgegreenpreschool.co.uk

The students were a real tribute to their school
Students became lecturers for the next generation of teachers. A group of Steyning Grammar School Year 11 students visited Brighton University to give a lecture to 160 trainee teachers on the theme ‘Great Teacher, Great Lesson’. It was part of the Brighton University Postgraduate Certificate of Education programme for trainee teachers, preparing them for working with students across Sussex and further afield. This is the third time that this session has been arranged with this year’s event being held in the Asa Briggs Lecture Theatre at the Falmer

Site Campus. Year 11 Steyning students Adwah Perez-Taylor, Millie Fraser, James Adeosun, Hannah Wadey and Leo Ghorishi represented the school. The school said: “This year’s students showed great courage in presenting in front of so many prospective teachers, speaking openly and honestly about their experience in education. We hope that this experience will have inspired them to value their education and to aim higher for further education themselves. The students taking part were buzzing with enthusiasm after the event and all gained a lot of confidence
front of 160 trainee teachers. They were a credit to the school and a credit to the reputation of teenagers everywhere.” Tom Newlands, Postgraduate Secondary Programme Leader commented: “The students were a real tribute to their school. Our trainees found this to be one of the best sessions yet in their Education Studies programme. It was a great opportunity to hear student voice and listen to what they understood by great teaching. Our trainees were impressed by how articulate your students were and so well prepared for their presentations. Their ability to reflect on learning and to answer questions was impressive. Out trainees are now even more excited about getting into the classroom and inspiring young people.”
Stop clowning around Sussex Police have, this week, issued a simple statement on their Facebook page: “We are advising people not to dress up as a clown and frighten strangers in a Halloween trend which is causing distress and alarm”, in a bid to curb the growing trend in the UK. The statement was immediately flooded with comments, mainly from genuinely concerned Sussex residents. Sussex Police, when asked if this was happening ‘all over, or in one place?’ by a mother of children, who walk home from school on their own, replied: “we have reports of it happening in Bexhill, Eastbourne and Crawley”. This conversation took place on October 10 and, since then, reports from other areas have come in. For some, the clown trend
is merely an annoyance, but there are a few people who take great offense to the idea and have suggested that, should they happen to come face to face with one such prankster, they would be willing to administer punishment. One Facebook commenter announced: “Should set up a non-police force that go round teaching these clowns a lesson!” The comment was immediately responded to: “That’s not a good idea” by Sussex Police. This negative sentiment has already led to an incident at an underground carpark, at the Dockside Outlet Centre in Chatham, Kent. The Metro reported that clown prankster, Ashley Symes, 23, was attempting to film his fright conquests for a YouTube video, when he was headbutted by one of his victims.

We are incredibly proud of them and their outstanding achievements this year!” Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley was extremely proud: “These are incredibly tough courses to pass as they test academic skills and the ability to be effective in the workplace. We have an excellent department for Early Years Education and these talented students and their teachers have worked really hard to be successful over the past year.” Two groups of graduates are pictured.

Penelope provides highlight of 200th anniversary Dame Penelope Keith provided the highlight of a busy weekend to celebrate the Wey and Arun Canal’s 200th anniversary. Dame Penelope opened the new Compasses Bridge on the summit level at Alfold as part of the two-day celebration attended by hundreds of fans. The memorable events ranged from a bicentennial baton relay along the route of the waterway to the champagne-drenched naming of a member’s new narrow boat. There were special boat excursions on the fully restored section at Loxwood – with the crews, canal centre volunteers and trust officers turned out in outfits typical of the early 1800s. The finale was a cream tea for members and guests at Dapdune
Wharf in Guildford, the location of a sumptuous meal staged for canal company directors and shareholders on the day the canal was officially opened in 1816. Trust chairman Sally Schupke said: “We were absolutely delighted with the way our weekend went, after months of planning. “There was an awful lot of detail to go into, with several people each taking on aspects of the celebrations, but everything went smoothly from start to finish. “There was a good turnout of members and guests at Compasses Bridge, which is important to the trust, as it’s our first major restoration project in Surrey.” Pictured are scenes from the event.

Bells will ring for Henry Burstow The 100th anniversary of the death of Horsham character Henry Burstow will be marked in style next weekend at a church he knew well, from ringing its bells. Horsham Bell Ringers will herald the event on October 22 in St Mary’s Church in Horsham’s Causeway. Singers from Horsham Folk Club will reflect Burstow’s passion for folk songs by singing a selection of the songs listed by Burstow in his Reminiscences of Horsham. To compliment those songs the Broadwood Morris men will perform in the church to music Burstow would have known. Whilst Burstow may have
been a local folk and bell ringing celebrity, thanks to the visit to Horsham by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1904 Burstow is known on the wider musical stage. Later taking inspiration from folk songs William’s helped to transform British classical music. He went on to create one of the outstanding British works of the 20th century Lark Ascending which will be performed by Andrew Bernardi on the 1696 Stradivarius together with his critically acclaimed Music Group, String Academy and Christs’ Hospital Director of music in Andrew Cleary. Lark Ascending was the
Crime victims priority under Sussex Police shake-up Crime victims suffering most harm and vulnerability and are to be given priority in changes in Sussex Police. Persistent crime offenders will also targeted by the new Investigations Framework. Sussex Police says it is modernising the way it investigates crime to speed up investigations, direct people to the right services to meet their needs and give earlier resolution. With more than 94,000 crimes reported a year in Sussex, investigators are now using an Investigations Framework to help them prioritise crimes that cause the greatest harm to victims and communities. Assistant Chief Constable Laurence Taylor, who is overseeing the implementation of a new policing model, said: “As demands on our service increase and we become a smaller organisation, it’s vital that our officers and staff have the tools to help them prioritise their workload. “With so many reports received each year it is unrealistic to think we can investigate everything. By better defining our priorities and focusing our resources accordingly, we aim to conduct better investigations of crimes against the vulnerable, crimes involving serial offenders and crimes that cause the greatest harm. “We won’t be ruling out investigating any crimes types. We will certainly not provide criminals with safe areas to move into or crime types that people will no longer report.” The Investigations Frame-
work aims to improve the quality of decision making about what should and should not be investigated and focus on victims’ wishes and the most vulnerable. It will increase the proportion of investigations of crimes that cause the most harm, affect the most vulnerable and are committed by persistent offenders. Detective Sergeant Laurence Cartwright said: “The framework enables us to quickly identify and support the most vulnerable victims, allowing more time and effort to be put into investigations where the risks to the victim are highest.” ACC Taylor said: “We will work together with victims of crime to understand their views and make sure their wishes are central to the decision making process. Evidence collected from a number of other police forces has shown that forces which investigate fewer crimes, solve more and get better outcomes for victims because they focus on the right things. The framework therefore also aims to reduce the overall number of investigations conducted.” The Investigations Framework is a part of many wider changes taking place within Sussex Police. New Investigations Teams, formed from Criminal Investigations Departments and Response Investigations Teams, will have a mix of detectives, uniformed officers and police staff investigators working together to better manage demand and provide a better service to victims.

Knepp Castle, near Horsham to support a charity. Bargain hunters headed for the New Horizon Appeal’s s Autumn Gift Fair in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. Eager shoppers, who attended a preview evening before the main fair day, enjoyed a sneak peek at more than 70 stalls selling home ware, clothing and local produce while drinking sparkling wine and eating canapés. Visitors to the main fair made the most of getting in some early Christmas gift shopping at stalls that provided something for all ages. Sarah Bray, Volunteer Organiser of the Autumn Gift Fair, and Vice Chair Person of the New Horizons Appeal Committee said: “The Autumn Gift Fair was another brilliant event. We’d like to thank Crest Nicholson for sponsoring this unique shopping experience and our enthusiastic
shoppers for coming along to enjoy our exclusive stalls while supporting St Catherine’s.” Suzanne Connor, New Horizons Appeal Co-ordinator at St Catherine’s, said: “It was fantastic to see so many people visit our Autumn Gift Fair, and take the chance to browse some lovely gifts at reasonable prices. We are really grateful to the New Horizons Appeal Committee for their continued support of our hospice and would like to thank them for all the effort they put into hosting this year’s gift fair. The Autumn Gift Fair is just one of the New Horizons Appeal high profile events, which the group holds to raise money for their local hospice. Their other successful events include a Garden and Local Produce Fair, Charity Golf Day and Lunch Club, which invites people to enjoy lunch at unusual locations, whilst raising money to help St Catherine’s.
The Stoptober Challenge has returned for another year – with support and advice available for people to give up the habit. Roughly 1,400 West Sussex residents die each year from smoking but evidence shows that with support smokers are four times more likely to quit. Smokefree West Sussex will be holding events across the county throughout Stoptober to give advice, help and information on quitting the habit. Events across the county include October 15 County Mall Crawley and October 29 at Montague Place Worthing. Rebecca Johnston, a successful Stoptober participant, said: “For anyone who is struggling and tempted to have just the one, I know how you feel and I know how hard it is. “It is probably one of the most difficult things I have ever done,

ber-framed buildings and their backstories continues unabated, and we are pleased to announce that as a result, Horsham Houses Revisited has been born! Dr Annabelle Hughes’ off-the beaten-track approach to her research means that she continues to scramble through roof spaces on her hands and knees with as much enthusiasm as ever to discover the lost secrets of Horsham buildings. Exciting new research includes amongst other things, more about an 8-bay building in East Street, some tantalising new evidence of dates and appearance of the Red Lion, and more evidence of the range along Colletts Alley. Now you too can meet the history detective, as Annabelle has agreed to sign her new book at the museum - as well as see the new month long temporary exhibition Through the Keyhole, inspired by Dr Hughes’ new book. The new publication contains a wealth of old photographs, some wonderful images of paintings which reveal how Horsham’s building landscape has changed or remained, together with some

After 30 years detailed research and hundreds of hours delving in to attics and basements, tucked in corners and undertaking contortions, the new book Horsham Houses Revisited is now out. Horsham Museum says that anyone interested in Horsham will want this essential guide to the ancient market town. The museum said: “Published in 1986, the book Horsham Houses revealed the fascinating stories behind some of the buildings of Horsham – their glory, their transformations great and small, and in some sad cases, their demise. Now, 30 years on, Dr Annabelle Hughes has written a revised version which includes a wealth of new information that she has discovered since. Being a long-time supporter and advocate for Horsham Museum, Dr Annabelle Hughes has often popped in to share fascinating titbits of new research. When asked if she would be willing to re-write her original text to include fresh research, to help raise funds for the museum, Dr Hughes was delighted. her unquenchable enthusiasm for Horsham’s tim-

Participants can see cost savings of more than £2,000 per year as well as improved health prospects for smokers and their families. Rebecca added: “Never give up on giving up!” To receive help during Stoptober contact the West Sussex Stop Smoking Service on 0300 100 1823 or text QUIT to 66777. Horsham Cricket and Sports Club Fireworks Night, which will take place on October 29, is set to be their biggest, at their annual fundraising event to date. The fireworks will be organised by Aurora, this year’s finalists in the national fireworks championships in Plymouth. The company will be using the same fireworks used in Disney Theme Parks and include effects, used during their finals UK performance, never seen before at Horsham, in the Horsham Panoramic Finale. The event will include a traditional fairground, with rides supplied by local fairground operator, Harris Brothers from Ashington, and Colin’s Amusements. There will be food market stalls, supply-
ing gourmet burgers, hog roast, pizza, fish and chips, crepes and a pick and mix sweet stall. Hepworth Brewers will be supplying their local Ales in the Beer Tent. The evening will conclude with an ‘80’s tribute by local band, Cinnamon Street, in the clubroom. The event has grown in reputation over the last few years, resulting in sold out ticket sales for the last two years, as ground capacity is limited. Tickets for this year’s event are on sale from today and the first 1000 early bird tickets are priced at £4 each, and once these are sold, tickets are £6.00, before the event, and £9.00 on the gate. Children under 5 have free access.

Horsham Artists Contemporary Art Fair 2016 Horsham artists are getting ready for this year’s HAOS Art fair, at County Hall North, on the weekend of 22 - 23 October. The event is proudly sponsored by Brewers and Sussex Lighting. Over forty artists will be exhibiting, and a wide variety of art will be represented; paintings, woodwork, glass work, jewellery, upcycled items, textiles, sculptures, abstract and realistic, for decorative or practical purposes. The event will be an excellent opportunity to chat to the artists or to buy a present or two - Christmas is galloping along! In addition, there will be exciting workshops; an introduction to a variety of art. Find out about fabric sculptures, learn about wet-in-wet oil paints, how to make a silver wrap-around ring and more. Amongst the 40+ artists displaying their work, is Collyer’s A-level student Esther Downton. She works with acrylics, mixed media and, more recently, has started experimenting with watercolour. Currently, Esther is exploring coastal environments, being drawn by the ever-changing landscape of colours and textures that make up the coast. Keeping it in the family is Esther’s mum, glass-bead maker Sarah Downton, who combines modern glass with techniques that go back thousands of years. The beads are lampworked by melting coloured glass rods and
winding the molten glass onto a steel mandrel. Colour and pattern is built up by successive layers, until the desired design is achieved, before annealing them in a kiln for durability. A series of events led Sarah to this unusual occupation: seeing beautiful beads at a craft fair, spotting a book on the topic, and being mesmerised by a glass blower on holiday. Kevin Meeten describes himself as an accidental artist, discovering painting as a relaxing focus, while recovering from a serious illness. His passion for sci-fi cinema, literature and TV, inspires him to create stylised portraits of iconic characters and original landscapes. Using mixed media and unusual colour combinations, he produces successful 2D and 3D works of art. Meet these artists and many others at the HAOS Contemporary Art Fair on Saturday 22 Oct, 10am - 5pm and Sunday 23 Oct, 10am - 4pm, at County Hall North, Chart Way, RH12 1RL. Free parking for visitors to the exhibition. Entry fee £2, or look out for the Free Entry passes widely available. For details on the venues and facilities, please visit: http://www.horshamartistsopenstudios.co.uk, https://www.facebook.com/ HorshamArtistsOpenStudios , or pick up a folder from the library, Horsham Museum, The Capitol, or various Horsham locations.

Gatwick’s second runway: Will the local housing market soar or nosedive? The long-running debate over airport expansion in the South East – which has pitted Gatwick against Heathrow – is heating up again as a final decision over which hub will get the green light is expected soon. Gatwick bosses have said building a second runway at their site will create 120,000 new jobs and contribute £1.73 billion a year to the local economy – but what will it mean for neighbouring homeowners in Surrey and West Sussex? Campaigners against Gatwick’s expansion have said, if granted, the second runway will have a detrimental economic, social and environmental impact on communities – and have cited increased
noise pollution as a specific factor affecting house prices. Gatwick, meanwhile, has said the inevitable growth in housing that would come with expansion will be a benefit, and new homes would be spread “more evenly” through the region and London. James Britton, partner at Roger Coupe estate agents in Cranleigh – which has served the Surrey/ West Sussex border area for 25 years – feels only time will tell exactly what would happen to the property market in Gatwick’s surrounding areas. He said: “The disruption building work could have, and the concerns about increased noise from extra flights, may impact the market. But equally having a
bigger transport hub on your doorstep could be a massive boost for house prices. “It is difficult to predict what effect a Gatwick expansion could have until more specific details are revealed, which are likely to only come about if it gets the go ahead. But we are lucky to be in a desirable area where house prices have remained steady despite the recent ups and downs of the UK’s economy. “When a decision is finally made it will be months, maybe years, before expansion work begins at either airport. Until then other factors, including Brexit, are likely to have a more immediate effect on the property market.” James, from Ewhurst, who has lived in the area for 20 years, acknowledged there would undoubtedly be change for Surrey
and West Sussex communities if Gatwick was successful. “The fact airport bosses have said planned housing growth would not just focus on already congested areas hints more rural areas could be seen as sites for development,” he added. “It will be important that developments brought about by a Gatwick expansion are shared equally so we can maintain the rural aesthetic that makes this area so special.” The Government delayed its decision at the end of last year. But the discussion is firmly back on the table after Prime Minister Theresa May, speaking at the Conservative Party conference, said the Government would “shortly announce” which airport had been successful.
How to be ‘in the know’ Have you ever wondered how the first homes on a brand new development often seem to be snapped up even before the show home opens? How do those buyers find out about such new homes which are not even on the market yet, often reserving the pick of the crop? Susan Wadsworth, head of new homes at Henry Adams, reveals insider tips for home buyers wanting to get to the front of the queue when it comes to new developments. “The key to finding out about new homes about to come to the market is to be registered with us in advance,” she said. “It only takes a few minutes to register a few details about the type of area and the type of new home you’re looking for, then you can sit back and relax, knowing that you will receive a ‘notification’ once a development which ticks some of those boxes is about to be launched.” Pre-marketing takes place
prior to the latest new developments being released on to the open market. In this way, forward-thinking buyers who are already registered on Henry Adams’ database will be informed about new developments at least 48 hours before the scheme becomes ‘live’ on property portals. Henry Adams New Homes successfully markets a wide range of new homes across the region, acting for reputable national and local housebuilders on sites from single detached homes to large developments which are also creating new communities. If you would like to join the private buyers’ database and be ‘in the know’ when it comes to the next new homes coming to the market, email newhomes@henryadams. co.uk or you can visit www. henryadams.co.uk/newhomes for the full array of developments already available.

Chris Nash thrilled with Sussex testimonial award Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Chris Nash, has been awarded a testimonial year by Sussex, for whom as a right hander he opens the batting, being the county’s leading scorer this season with 1256 runs at an average of 54.6. Popular Chris is clearly delighted to get a testimonial, saying to the District Post; “It’s a huge honour and hopefully we can have a fun year!” Chris scored an unbeaten double century for his Horsham age group side at age 12, went on to
make his debut for Sussex in 2002 and has since played 420 matches in all formats, scoring almost 17,000 runs with 25 hundreds and 88 fifties. His off breaks have taken 167 wickets and he has pouched 171 catches. These excellent statistics led to Chris’s call up for England Lions in 2011 and made him valued in New Zealand for Auckland and Otago during our winters. He went to Horsham’s Heron Way School and Collyers and played for Horsham at Lord’s when they won the National Knock Out Cup in 2005. Chris summed up by telling us: “I
Chris Nash
am incredibly grateful to Sussex for awarding me a testimonial in 2017. I hope it can be a great year both on and off the pitch personally and for Sussex CCC. Having started as a 7 year old on the outfield at Horsham I never could have dreamt that I could have played so many times and with such success for my home county. Although Horsham may not have a county fixture in 2017 I am already planning to bring the Sussex players, maybe with a few past legends included, back to Horsham for a special testimonial match.”

Team Atlantis rule the pool Joggers led home Atlantis dominated in the Arena League
Swimming Dave Snith - Sports Editor Forty of Atlantis Swimming Club’s top swimmers competed in the first event of the Arena
Swimming League, Division One, at Bexley Leisure Centre. The competition involves the top southern swimming clubs competing in a series of events over the next three months.
Junior Football Round Up Horsham Sparrows U10 – Sparrows met Billingshurst Reds in 2 exciting matches. In the first match Daniel S went close on several occasions but Billingshurst scored just before the break and despite some pressure from Horsham Billingshurst were victors. In the second game Sparrows were more of a threat with goals coming from a Cameron D hat-trick, Daniel S and Jethro. Horsham Sparrows U12 – Sparrows edged out Partridge Green 3-2 in a closely contested game Horsham Sparrows U13 – Sparrows went top of the table with a 0 – 4 win away to Hurst Colts. Horsham Sparrows U16 – Sparrows secured their first win of the season with a home win against Lower Beeding. Despite being behind 3 times Sparrows fought back to win 4-3 with goals from Harry B, Luke M, Sam P and Harry M. MoM: Jordan M. Horsham Sparrows U11 Girls – Sparrows travelled to East Grinstead Meads narrowly losing 4-3 after a good game. 2 goals from Briony and one from Gemma rounded
off a match played in excellent and sporting spirit. GoG: Gemma. Horsham Sparrows U15 Girls – The under 15 girls earned their first point of the season with a 3-3 draw against Cuckfield. Charley equalised an early Cuckfield goal before the visitors took the lead again. Then Becca scored her first of the season before Alice gave Sparrows the lead. Cuckfield then made it 3-3 from a corner. GoG: Becca. Horsham Sparrows Women – Sparrows had a good 5-0 win with Imy D opening the scoring before Lucy M made it 2-0 a minute later. Lucy scored her second goal, Georgina B curled in the fourth and Hannah D rounded off the win. Horsham Youth Horsham Youth had a mixed bag of results with the U12 Green comfortable winners over Worthing Town White 5-3. Horsham U12 Amber started their league campaign after their cup triumph last week, honours finished even with a 2-2 draw against Felpham Colts. Horsham U11 travelled to Lancing Utd Colts and in a thriller lost 4-3. Chichester City Colts U18 1 - 4 Roffey U18 Roffey went top of Division A with a second successive away win. Atlantis was up against teams from Sevenoaks, East Grinstead, Erith, Beacon and Black Lion swimming clubs and was drawn in lane 4 for the entire event; a good draw for the Atlantis swimmers. From the start Atlantis recorded win after win but after 10 of the 50 events were – due to a few unfortunate disqualifications – in second place. The team rallied well and by the half way point were in the lead. The second half of the event saw Atlantis step up a gear to finish with a resounding victory with a total of 234 points, over 40 ahead of the second place team. Coach Andy Lobley praised the great team spirit saying, “It’s no surprise we win when we support each other and swim as a team. Bring on the next round and congratulations to all!”
early chances and their lead was only 1 – 0 at half-time thanks to David Wood’s low shot. After the break Roffey increased their lead through Dominic Glossop before Colt’s pulled one back. Further goals from Matt Knowles and Nick Cranston put the result beyond doubt. Chesworth Rovers U16 6 - 0 Copthorne U16 Chesworth overcame a resilient Copthorne side at the Holbrook Club to go second in the league table. Chesworth dominated possession but couldn’t break through until Archie Talbot volleyed home a Ben Harrison cross after half an hour. Rovers consolidated their lead with three goals early in the second half before Talbot scored a second and Ben Peppercorn came off the bench to register a hattrick, with Jamie Maunder also getting on the scoresheet. Chesworth Rovers U13 6 - 1 East Grinstead Meads U13 Hat-trick hero Josh Hayes helped seal a great team victory for the Rovers in a league clash with East Grinstead Meads. Nyle Barton started the scoring from a Toby Shepheard cross, 5 minutes later Barton hit a double. Meads pulled a goal back before Josh Hayes and Harry Sutton scored before the break. The Hayes hat-trick was completed in the second half a leaping header and half volley.

Storming win confirms Horsham’s potential South League – Premier – Division 1 Guildford 1 - 4 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “This was a good game for us and we’re continuing to play very well.” Last season Guildford were in the National League, but following their relegation players have moved on and Horsham took full advantage with substantially the same team before their promotion but boosted by the addition of some key, experienced players. Al Campbell continuing: “This was probably the strongest team that we’ve ever been able to put out and we’ve got some good players knocking on the door for selection, too. Newcomer Russell Self starred for the 2s last week and quickly confirmed his senior side status with a reverse stick goal.” Guildford though went on the attack, drawing excellent saves from new Team Captain Andy Isaacs, but Horsham were unfazed, Player Coach Dom Male celebrat-
ing his return to the side by collecting a Freddie Campbell pass threaded through the defence and then nonchalantly skirting the Guildford keeper to put Horsham two ahead with the interval beckoning. In the second half Horsham carried on where they had left off, with the defence and midfield holding secure, first new signing Ellis Woolley increased the lead before regular stalwart Cirdec Atkinson put the result beyond all possible doubt. With such a commanding lead it was perhaps unsurprising that Horsham relaxed – a soft goal resulted but that was to be Guildford’s only moment of glory. On Saturday (October 15) Horsham return to Broadbridge Heath to take on Havant with a 13.30 push back in another stern test, Al Campbell summing up with: “They narrowly missed out on promotion from our new league last season so it’ll be a tough nut for us to crack but we’re playing with confidence – so bring it on!” A treat is in store for hockey fans - Tomas Santiago Argentine Gold Medallist from the Rio Olympics keeps goal for Havant!

Lauren Burroughs scored twice in Horsham’s win South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham 3 - 0 Staines Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter An excellent confidence boosting clean sheet win moved Horsham up to eighth, just one point behind fourth in the table Barnes. Horsham went ahead in the fifth minute with a Lauren Burroughs goal. Further chances were created with good build ups, Horsham dominating possession as sustained pressure earned two

short corners, but strong shots were directed at the Staines keeper. After leading one nil at the break Horsham had a shot saved soon after the resumption, followed by two more short corners, Lauren’s twin sister Elle Blakesley increasing Horsham’s lead off the second. End to end play ensued with the visitors awarded two unconverted shorts and a Horsham breakaway culminating in a shot being pushed wide. Horsham then had a goal disallowed, the set piece shot deemed to have been above the back board, but
they kept pressing until the sister act delivered again, Lauren’s second goal being promptly followed by the final whistle, securing the well-deserved 3-0 win. Captain Hannah Simpson, Horsham keeper, told the District Post: “We’ve been playing well up to now, but haven’t quite gelled until today. That was a good win and will take us forward.” Tomorrow (Saturday) the ladies visit third placed Tulse Hill & Dulwich – the highest scoring team in the league - who beat Oxford University 4-1 last weekend.
YM and Pagham finish goalless at Gorings Mead
Heath started strongly against an AFC Uckfield side that have themselves made a steady start to their league season. However, Steve Painters Heath side have stepped up another level this season and went on to dominate the match after the hosts went down to 10 men. Minutes after Ollie Moore had hit a right foot shot from 25 yards that flew inches over the crossbar striker Tiago Andrade turned on a sixpence to fire in a right foot shot that Uckfield keeper Matt Dann did well to save. Followng a series of free kicks were conceded by the home side the frustration came to a head in the 17th minute when Uckfield’s Matt Mclean was shown a straight red for a challenge on Andrade; although clearly a foul it was a bit harsh on the Uckfield player. With the extra man Heath continued to dominate play and finally broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when a Piers McDermott free-kick was met by Andrade to fire his team into
the lead. Two minutes later Dean Wright crossed the ball and Jake Holmes met it with a perfect right foot volley that flew past Dann into the net. Heath was denied a third goal on numerous occasions by Uckfield’s ‘Man of the Match’ Dann who made superb saves from Moore, Andrade and Wright. Heath eventually did add a third five minutes before the break when Holmes played the ball into the path of Shaun Findlay who coolly slotted past Dann. Heath started the second period the way they had ended the first and were 4-0 up within 2 minutes of the restart. Moore played a ball to Holmes and the Heath striker smashed it past Dann. Minutes later Dann twice denied Moore, one a volley from 30 yards and then by getting down low to save a shot on the goal line. Despite some quality balls into the Heath penalty area Michael Chester was never really tested earning himself a fourth clean sheet this season. So a comfortable win for Heath against the ten-men of AFC Uckfield but they have it all to do again on Tuesday evening as the teams meet again in the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup.
YM battled out a 0-0 draw
Hornets victory earns a home draw against Romford FA Trophy Preliminary Round Potters Bar 0 – 2 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor
SCFL Premier League Horsham YMCA 0 – 0 Pagham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Both teams came into the match without playing out a draw in any of their league games this season and with YM having scored 22 goals and Pagham 25, a goalless
draw was not a likely result. But that is how it turned out. A bore draw it was not though and for much of the match both sides played lively passing football that become even quicker on a pitch made slicker by a midmatch downpour. Equally both sides had chances to score but all came to nothing and both teams could be happy with a fair point
apiece. YM now sit in seventh place in the league with 19 points from their 11 games, 11 behind leaders Shoreham. YM will be looking to put a winning run together to keep the leading pack in reach, starting tomorrow (Saturday 15) with a home match against lowly Arundel.
Heath’s cup run continues Peter Bentley Cup – Round 3 AFC Uckfield Town 0 – 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Heath made the familiar journey to Uckfield on Tuesday evening – having earned a 0-3 win there on
the Saturday before – and again came away as winners, this time extending their Peter Bentley Cup run. As expected the home side gave Heath a much sterner test than that experienced a few days before and until a very late goal it seemed things would end goalless. However with just 3 min-
utes of the 90 remaining Jahobi Maher popped up to send his side through in what was an entertaining match. A tough match now faces manager Steve Painter and his side as the host league leaders Shoreham at the Leisure Centre tomorrow (Saturday 15).
In form Potters Bar, with a giant killing cup victory over National League team Bath City in the bag, looked a daunting prospect for Horsham in this FA Trophy Preliminary Round tie. The Hornets however took advantage of their opponents extra time exertions against Bath City 3 days earlier to record a superb away victory in Hertfordshire. The game itself was not a classic but the Hornets would have been more than happy with the way they held onto the early lead without any of the defensive mishaps that have plagued them in so many games this season. A minute after Danny Hart had slammed a ninth minute shot into the side netting with ‘keeper Josh Pelling beaten Horsham went up the other end and took the lead. Scott Kirkwood’s free kick was well met by Charlie Farmer whose header beat Ravan Constable in the Town goal. For the remainder of the half - and without either side looking fluent both teams were well organised and solid looking at the back. Town’s Michael Murray was thwarted by Lewis Hyde and
when Terry Dodd put Liam MacDevitt through the home defence dealt with the threat. Much the same as the first half the second never really got going as a match despite an early scare for Horsham with Lamar Simpson hitting a post within minutes of the restart. Midway through the half Pelling kept Horsham’s lead intact by diving full length to push Murray’s goal-bound effort around the post for a corner. New signing, defender Steve Metcalf – a midweek arrival from Worthing – came on for his debut to replace limping goal scorer Farmer as Dom Di Paola looked to see his side over the line for a memorable cup win. With two minutes remaining and through some good play by MacDevitt the game was finally settled. The Horsham forward broke away, running three quarters of the pitch, before being hacked down by Town defender Billy Baird in the area from which the referee pointed to the spot and showed the home defender his second yellow. Scott Kirkwood stepped up and blasted the penalty past Constable, high into the net. Horsham will now play Ryman League Division One North side Romford in the next round of the FA Trophy at Gorings Mead on Sunday October 30, with a 3pm kick-off.

Horsham sixth after visitors grab late win A Horsham try against Charlton Park

Photo by Richard Harman London 2 South East Horsham 27 - 34 Charlton Park Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Four out of five of Horsham’s games to date, including this one against Charlton Park, have been close run things. Horsham have won two of those encounters, but not this bruising affair, despite leading at half time. Horsham Captain Tom Johnson was again kicking well, converting tries by Joe Wilde and Jordan Bell and adding a penalty to give Horsham a 17-13 lead at the break
after Bell had run right through Charlton’s defence to score under the posts at the end of the half. The visitors enjoyed much possession in the second session and snatched a maximised try to take the lead by three points, but Johnson latched onto a breakaway to cross the line and then convert. That triggered an ugly incident when the opposition winger charged in from some distance off the ball with fists flailing, provocation that went unpunished. Horsham defence was then cut through, together with a successful kick, switching the lead in Charlton’s favour, only for John-
son, nursing a rib injury, to level the score 27-27 with a penalty for a trip tackle disputed by the vociferous opposition. With the game in the balance, Charlton’s speedy but errant winger then out-paced Horsham’s defence to get under the posts from the half way line, the conversion sealing Charlton’s theft of the game. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham go to Hurlingham Park, Putney to take on high scoring London NW 2 side Hammersmith & Fulham in the cup. The hosts are currently fifth in their league with three wins from five starts, featuring their thrashing of bottom club
Another good drive from Palmer at the Japanese Grand Prix Another good drive from Jolyon Palmer
Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor
After scoring his first ever Formula One point the week before with a tenth place in Malaysia, Jolyon Palmer just missed out on the points at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka after finishing in twelfth place. Although he came away with no points this could be considered a better drive than the one he
find us on facebook horsham.news
achieved in Malaysia as in Japan all the drivers completed the race. The Renault Sport Formula One Team adopted a one stop tyre strategy for both Palmer and his team mate Kevin Magnussen with Palmer starting from 16th place on the grid with medium tyres before stopping on lap 25 for a new set of hard tyres. Palmer fought hard in the middle of the pack to move up four
places from his start for an excellent 12th place. After the race a delighted Palmer said, “Tenth last week, twelfth this week, but this week everyone finished the race! We had a lot of luck last week and I think today was actually a stronger performance. We beat everyone that we could this afternoon. I’m pleased with how we went, the strategy, the pace, the performance… Everything was good.”
Depleted Pulborough trailed at half time but fought back strongly to pull off an important win, enabling them to leapfrog Thanet Wanderers to top the table by two points after Wanderers had surprisingly lost to Lewes. In the absence of regular kicker Frazer Oliphant-Hope, skipper Simon Burfiend – almost returned to full fitness – stepped up to slot home two first half penalties but Sheppey scored three unconverted tries to lead 15-6 at the break. But, although Sheppey added a penalty, Boro, despite
missing players in their front row and needing to field colts and second XV players, won the last 20 minutes with three tries and two conversions. Charlie Denman, Brad Game and Ewen Calloway crossed the line and Burfiend obliged with the extras. Pulborough Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “Their big forwards kept bombing us, enabling Sheppey to boss much of the game but they eventually tired and that’s when we grabbed our chance!” Boro have a home game in the RFU Senior Vase Cup on Saturday (October 15) – in, by a quirk in the fixture list, a re-match against Sheppey, who will be pushing hard to revenge their league revers
Nwachukwu’s class shows in another fine away victory y Ryman League Division One South East Grinstead Town 0 – 3 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham secured another three vital points on Tuesday evening in their quest to consolidate their Ryman League status after last season’s promotion. The win moves the Hornets up to a comfortable mid-table twelfth place and with Three Bridges and Godalming Town already looking adrift at the bottom – even at this early stage – Ryman consolidation looks a very good possibility. Much like the last away match Horsham were involved in, away to Potters Bar, this was not a great game, but like the last game, it was all about the win, and another clean sheet. A very uneventful first half – apart from an unfortunate injury to Town’s Travis Gregory who was stretchered off with what looked like an ankle injury - saw the sides go in at the break goalless which was a good reflection on the lack of quality and excitement the first 45 minutes served up to the watching faithful. The first 10 minutes of the restart continued the trend but then a series of events
changed the game. Three very good chances fell to the home side, Josh Pelling superbly saved the first, the second was bundled off the line and the third saw Jack Howlett’s fierce drive canon off the crossbar. Those near misses were big moments but the next event, the introduction of Tony Nwachukwu in place of Liam MacDevitt, totally changed the match. The skill, pace and goal threat of Nwachukwu is proven and his part in this game was immense. Minutes after coming on Nwachukwu scored a wonderful goal; hitting a volley from distance to give the home ‘keeper Chris Haigh no chance. He then followed that up with a second, more fortunate, goal that came from a deflection off Haigh before the Horsham livewire bundled the ball over the line. The now deflated home side conceded a third in the last minute when Scott Kirkwood shot low across the goal and into the far side of the net. All in all the 3-0 score line was a bit harsh on Town but Dom Di Paulo and his team will care not about that as back to back wins were secured. Fellow mid-table side Whyteleafe visit Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday 15) when Horsham will be aiming to make it three wins on the bounce.
CHRISTMAS
Fantasia
Alongside the ice rink, on 26 November a Christmas Fantasia event will open, offering families the chance to experience a Christmas market in Horsham. With the ice rink as the centrepiece attraction, visitors will be able to ride traditional fairground rides, enjoy mulled cider and wine along with various hot food offerings, wander a magical market and visit Father Christmas in a fantastic grotto experience. The Christmas fantasia is a free entry event, with visitors paying for attractions through a tokens system. Father Christmas will be able to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.
