Pudsey and pals due to vist Town Centre this half term As part of this year’s Horsham half term festivities, Pudsey and many of his pals will visit the Town Centre to celebrate Children In Need. Between 10am and 4pm in the Carfax on October 27, there will be three Song and Dance shows for the whole family on the Bandstand (11am, 12.15pm and 14.30pm) starring TV’s Dave Benson Phillips with Pudsey and a load of his mascot pals. Between the shows, the cast will be roaming around the area bringing joy and happiness... and a little bit of mayhem, thanks to Horsham’s Howie the Hornet and some of the other little rascals. It is hoped that the residents and businesses of Horsham will create a bumper collection for the charity this year, led by Horsham Rotary Club, who are a national ‘Children In Need’ Partner, and Horsham District Council. The town collectively donated nearly £5000 in 2014 - a figure organisers hope to beat. Individual donations can be made in a bucket collection in the Town on Thursday, or by visiting the Rotary Club of Horsham’s Just Giving web page and donating to the Children In Need Campaign. A Rotary Club spokesperson stated: “Businesses and other organisations can donate and join
in the fun and promote themselves, by organising ‘Pounds for Pudsey’ collections amongst staff, clients and friends. The results of these collections can be handed to Pudsey in person, in the Carfax, on October 27 between 13.30pm and 14.00pm or between 15.30pm and 16.00pm. The ’handover‘ will be photographed and recorded in social and print media and will

Businesses and other organisations can donate and join in the fun and promote themselves involve a ‘giant cheque‘ being produced with the name of the donating organisation and the amount donated. “Naturally the donors may dress for the handover ceremony however they think fit and there will be a prize of a Giant Pudsey to the best-dressed organisation. We would ask all organisations that will be raising ‘Pounds for Pudsey’ to let us know asap by emailing horshamrotary@btconnect.com so that we can mention you in the publicity. Lists of participating organisations will be published each day/week.”

Child crime continues encouraging fall Geek Week Fewer children are being arrested for juvenile crime across Sussex. The figures for arrests of children aged 17 and under have fallen every year since 2010 and according to Sussex Police the latest figure continues this trend. The number of children arrested in Sussex has dropped from 3,220 in 2014 to 2,679 in 2015. Assistant Chief Constable Laurence Taylor said: “We have seen almost a 50 per cent reduction in the last four years of children being arrested, but we are not complacent and want to improve on this. “We have been working hard as an organisation to emphasise to officers that all children and young people should be treated as children first. Under our Operation Stepping Stone initiative we are looking at how we, as an organisation, reduce the criminalisation of children and young people. It is vitally important that vulnerability is identified and as far as possible a full understanding of their circumstances is sought before decisions which affect their future are made.” Officers across Sussex have been asked to find alternatives, like community resolution, to avoid arresting young people. The
force has voluntary attendance suites in police stations across Sussex where interviews can be conducted without any form of detention. Custody officers are being asked to reinforce this when authorising detention, directing officers to alternatives methods when necessary. The force are working with partner agencies to ensure a joined up
approach for children in care who are a particularly vulnerable group of young people. Working practices are in place to ensure that we consult with colleagues from youth offending teams and children’s services when considering what happens to young people. Intervention by police is not always necessary

and often partners can offer better support to help to change the young person’s behaviour. ACC Taylor said: “We work closely with the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Youth Commission and consult with them about the policing of children and young people in Sussex. Recent discussion points have been around cybercrime, CSE, healthy relationships and radicalisation. Members also sit on the Youth Independent Advisory Group.” “Our wish is to maintain and enhance the relationship and engagement we have with young people in Sussex. We already have an excellent liaison with local school communities but are looking to develop other ways of working to ensure we keep young people safe and stop them becoming victims or offenders of crime.” Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “I am pleased that Sussex Youth Commission members have been advising the police and giving officers valuable insights into the issues facing young people in our county today. They have been particularly helpful in improving officers’ understanding of the relationship between the police and young people. This is exactly what I had in mind when I asked young people from Sussex to take part in this ground-breaking initiative. “The Sussex Youth Commission enables young people to become part of the solution to tackling crime in their area, rather than being seen as part of the problem.”

Caring Jason up for national award Jason said: “To be nominated by the County Council was a huge compliment because we have so many brilliant social workers who work for our organisation. Then to find out that I’ve been shortlisted is completely overwhelming. “Like many practitioners, I entered the profession to do something of real value and because I love working with people. Since starting with West Sussex I’ve received excellent training, supervision and support. I’m also very grateful to have social work colleagues who are so encouraging and always bring out the best
Jason Barnes
Next month could be a big one for a social worker from West Sussex recognised nationally for his outstanding work with children and their families. Jason Barnes, a child protection social worker in the south of the county, has been selected as a finalist in the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2016. The results will be announced in November in London. The award, which is supported by Barnardo’s, is for a qualified social worker who has made a difference through his or her outstanding work with children and families. Wendy Hill, Principal Social Worker at West Sussex County Council, who nominated Jason, said: “This is a huge honour as I know that they had a very high
number of applications this year and this is the most competitive category. “Jason is a social worker who is becoming nationally recognised as an ambassador for the social work profession as he has written a series of inspiring articles for The Guardian and Community Care magazine.” Jason was also instrumental in initiating and co-ordinating the regional Social Work Development Group which is a new cross-county project run by social workers, for social workers to assist with their Continuing Professional Development. This group has also been a new opportunity for qualified practitioners from across Sussex to learn, share knowledge and challenge methods and values.

The awards were judged by leading influencers including the Chief Social Workers Isabelle Trowler and Lyn Romeo and Maris Stratulis, who is England Manager, British Association of Social Workers. Javed Khan, Chief Executive of award sponsor Barnardo’s, said: “This award recognises the very
best work in children’s social care and someone who consistently goes above and beyond to make a positive difference to the lives of the children and families they support. To reach the final of the Social Worker of the Year Awards is an outstanding achievement and something to be very proud of.” For more information about the Social Worker of the Year Awards, please see www.socialworkawards.com. new fun run format
A Santas versus Elves contest will bring a new look to the St Catherine’s Hospice festive fun run next month. It will be held on November 27 in Horsham Park and the new format has been launched as part of Hospice Care Week, a national week that raises awareness of hospice care across the UK. Sponsored by Gatwick Airport, Santas v Elves is one of four 3km - 5km runs happening across Sussex and Surrey. This year, for the first time, people can choose a team when signing up. Taking part and raising just £48 will allow a patient to have an hour’s visit by our Practical Care Team, giving them expert care in the comfort of their own home, and allowing them to stay in familiar surroundings and make special memories at what might be their last Christmas. Paul Teasdale from Crawley was the top fun run fundraiser
in 2015. He said: “In 2014, I ran in memory of my father-in- law. My mother-in- law was thrilled that I raised so much in his memory. Sadly a year later, I ran in her memory. I’d encourage everyone, whatever your age, to take part in Santa’s versus Elves. You can’t beat the atmosphere or sense of achievement as you cross the finish line and it’s amazing to know that I’ve helped families enjoy their Christmas together. So why not kick-start your Christmas by registering for Santas v Elves?” To register visit:www.stch.org. uk/SantasvsElves. It costs £25 an adult, £15 for children under 16 and £60 for a family of four (two adults, two children). Alternatively you can register for nothing as long as you commit to raising a minimum of £50 per adult and £25 per child (under 16). Schools sugar success is sweet John Figgins and Alison Thomson
A push to lessen the exposure of children in Horsham and the rest of West Sussex to sugar is taking its next stage after its first scheme won a national award. The sugar content fell by more than 40% in primary school meals. As a result West Sussex County Council sugar reduction programme was judged to be in the top three of 300 entries at this year’s annual Public Health England Conference. Because of the programme West Sussex primary school meals now have over one kilo less sugar per child, over an average school year. In total, 30,000 children a day benefit

Daily sugar consumption has reduced from 16g to 9g, and over the school year, the amount of sugar now removed from primary school meals across the county is equal to three double decker London buses. John Figgins, County Catering Service Manager, said: “We were one of only three winners from 300 entries, from public health professionals across the country, so this is an excellent result for the work on our school meal sugar reduction programme. “We have reduced the sugar over a 20 month period so that changes have been less noticeable and indeed our customer feedback and meal uptake has remained very
positive.” Christine Field, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “The team can feel very proud of the impact this work has had on children’s lives, as the amount of sugar reduced is of a not insignificant amount. “The work they have done in making meals healthier for children has also received fantastic feedback from other local authorities, Public Health England, and international delegates. “Our team will continue to work hard to make our children’s lives healthier and we are all very proud of them.” The scheme will continue and moves into its next phase that is based around awareness with Chartwells, the school meals partner, commencing a programme of school activities around healthy eating and lifestyles. County Catering Service Manager, John Figgins, and Public Health Project Officer, Alison Thomson, accepted the award for the programme, which was judged in the top three of 300 entries at the annual Public Health England Conference 2016. Alison, and Sue Carmichael, Public Health Lead for Healthy Lifestyles, also gave a presentation on the programme highlighting sugar reduction initiatives across the county, from workplace catering to school meals, as part of the whole system approach to obesity.
Thanks to dedicated volunteers Police volunteers from Southwater and Billinghurst Police Front Office have been recognised for their outstanding contribution. They were congratulated at an awards ceremony and celebration at Southwater Police Station to celebrate its opening 20 years ago. A dedicated team of 20 volunteers runs the office, liaising between the public and the police. Certificates were awarded by Chief Constable Giles York and a number of volunteers also received long service awards for the years they have dedicated to helping the public and supporting the Neighbourhood Policing Teams. Chief inspector Howard Hodges, District Commander for Adur, Worthing and Horsham, said: “Police Support Volunteers are important to us, they enhance the service that our officers and staff provide by sharing their unique skills and experience. “I am very proud to have such a group of people willing to give up their own time to help and support not only the police but their community. “The office is a hub of activity that those local to Southwater rely on. I cannot thank the volunteers enough for
what they do and the time they give.” One of the Southwater volunteers said: “I’ve volunteered for a year now and love what I do. Volunteering with Sussex Police has given me great experience and in the future I’d like to be a detective. “I volunteer as police staff as I want to help the public and it’s a great way to understand the way policing works and to give something back to the community.” Sussex Police is always looking for more volunteers for a number of roles. If you would like to know more please email david.scott.01@sussex.pnn. police.uk or visit http://www. sussex.police.uk/jobs/volunteers/.

More help for hard of hearing People living with hearing loss could get more help from next month with Big Lottery money coming to West Sussex. Vital information support services run by charity Action on Hearing Loss that enable isolated older people to better manage their hearing loss will be expanded across three areas of the UK including the South East of England in a bid to tackle social isolation. More than 150,000 are living with hearing loss in West Sussex .The vast majority of these are aged over 50, with the condition more likely to occur the older people get. Those who leave the condition unmanaged face barriers to communication, making it more likely that they withdraw from social situations and become isolated. To challenge these issues the charity has received £972,681 from the Big Lottery Fund to expand its Hear to Inform and Connect project in three areas across the UK, including the South East of England. This will be delivered by specialist staff and trained volunteers working within local communities in West Sussex, particularly focusing on the hardest to reach groups including those living in rural areas, older black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, and those living in care homes. The service will provide invaluable face-to-face support to empower and increase the number of older people who take action

to manage their hearing loss. Through a mixture of information stands and talks offering advice on all aspects of hearing loss from getting hearing aids to learning how to lip-read, the project will help people be better informed and keep them connected to family, friends and the world around them. Research also shows that hearing loss is closely linked to mental health is-
sues, doubling the risk of developing depression and increasing the risk of anxiety. The charity will help organisations in West Sussex, such as community clubs and voluntary groups, to become more accessible and ensure that they increase their ability to support those living with deafness, tinnitus and hearing loss more effectively. Crystal Rolfe, Head of London and South East services at charity Action on Hearing Loss said: “We are delighted that the Big Lottery Fund have awarded us this money to help us to reach the 169,000 people living with hearing loss in West Sussex who may be feeling isolated due to their hearing loss. Through our existing face-toface work across the country, we have seen many peoples’ quality of life greatly improved with our
support, whether this is through giving guidance on specialist equipment, learning to lip-read or simply having a chat about their individual needs. “We look forward to speaking to residents across West Sussex and we would call on anyone interested in getting involved as a volunteer for delivery of the project to get in touch so that we can begin to reach as many people who may be affected by hearing loss as possible.” Joe Ferns, UK Knowledge and Portfolio Director at the Big Lottery Fund said: “This project is equipping older people who may face barriers to accessing services with vital information and tools to help manage their hearing loss. Those living with the condition can feel socially isolated and this project tackles this head on by breaking down communication barriers and enabling older people to talk through their issues with trained staff and volunteers.” The project is due to launch in November with funding running for three years. Pupils take to the water for studies The theme was storms and shipwrecks as young schoolchildren headed on to the water for their studies. Year 4 girls at Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding set sail on the ocean waves. As part of their topic on Storms and Shipwrecks, based on the Michael Morpurgo’s book, “Kensuke’s Kingdom”, they headed off to Chichester Harbour to experience life at sea.

On the lookout for wildlife, we were lucky enough to see a rare osprey perched on a post, but were unable to spot any of the seals that apparently reside in the harbour. The school says the girls had a “super” trip and really took to sea life, although none looked too keen to follow Michael Morpurgo’s character’s example of travelling around the world on a yacht.

Gift gives Samaritans a lift School sets record The presentation
The Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley will complete a project to improve facilities a little quicker after a generous gesture. The Plaisterers Lodge has given them £3,500, and they presented the cheque at the charity’s annual general meeting. Mr Peter Neal, Master of the Lodge from 2015 to 2016, said he and his members were very pleased to support such a worthwhile charity and Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley had been his personal choice for his year as Master. Paul Sherar, outgoing Chairman of the Samaritans branch
said how much it meant to them as they have to raise all their own running costs including training of volunteers, telephones and building maintenance. Paul said: “Indeed”, said Paul, “we are currently faced with the need to re-organise our listening room to take account of recent changes in the national Samaritans telephone operation and we are immensely grateful to The Plaisterers’ Lodge as their very generous donation which, together with other grants we have received, will enable us to
carry out the work in full sooner rather than later.” Anyone interested in volunteering with Samaritans as a listener should email: horshamsams@googlemail. com or call in to 21 Denne Road, Horsham RH12 1JE. You can contact Samaritans by: Phone 116 123 free of charge from landlines, mobiles and phone boxes from anywhere in the UK or locally on 01403 276276 (local charges apply); Text 07725 909090 and email jo@samaritans.org
When school staff totalled up their latest fund-raising effort they discovered they had broken a record. They recently supported the Macmillan Biggest Coffee Morning. The successful session run by the refectory team at Collyer’s raised a record £214 by selling homemade cakes, including victoria sandwich, scones with jamand cream, lemon cake, apple crumble cake, shortbread and chocolate muffins. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate was also on tap. Jackie Dalal, the school’s Catering Manager, said: “We have been running a coffee morning to support Macmillan for a few years now and we are absolutely thrilled to break the £200 barrier – which this is a new record.” “It was a great team effort from the refectory team and everyone
seemed to really enjoy the morning”. Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “The coffee morning was fantastic and it was great to see the Collyer’s community really coming together to support the outstanding work of the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.” Student Chloe Chamberlain said: “The refectory staff are loved at Collyer’s and the Macmillan charity is a really worthwhile cause. We were all really keen to support the event.” Deputy Principal Steve Nicholls said: “Huge thanks to Jackie Dalal and our superb refectory team. The food is fantastic on a daily basis, so it was no surprise that the cakes were so ludicrously delicious. I know students and staff at Collyer’s were delighted to support such a wonderful charity.”

Be scary but safe this Hallowe’en
Parents and carers are being advised to let their kids be ‘scary but safe’ with the spooky Hallowe’en costumes they wear this year. Experts say costumes should only be bought from reputable sources, particularly when buying on-line, and that consumers should check that the product bears a CE mark. West Sussex Trading Standards and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service traditionally test a selection of cheap children’s outfits, to check they comply with the law, and do not catch fire easily and spread too rapidly when set alight. There were several failures two years ago, but none last year. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Hallowe’en is a fantastic festival, which is great fun for both children and adults, but the message to everyone must be clear: Be scary, but safe; Don’t
let the evening end in horror”. Peter Aston, Trading Standards Manager, added: “Careful shopping is only one element of staying safe. Keeping the costumes away from naked flames is the only sure way to prevent a tragic incident.” Residents are also advised not dress up as clowns during Hallowe’en following a recent trend. David added: “Dressing up during Hallowe’en is exciting and fun, but the recent clown craze can be seen by some residents, particularly more vulnerable residents, as extremely intimidating.” If buyers find any children’s costumes that don’t have a CE mark, they can let Trading Standards know online at www. westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport or via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506. Anyone who feels threatened or intimidated on Hallowe’en can contact Sussex Police on 101.

Award for super carers Two West Sussex foster carers have been given national awards by the UK’s leading fostering charity for their outstanding work. Tracy Doyle received the Outstanding Contribution by a Foster Carer award and Deborah Waygood received the Fostering Community Supporter award at The Fostering Network’s Fostering Excellence Awards. Tracy, who fosters for West Sussex, has provided respite care for children with disabilities since 2008. One child she cared for had such a poor immune system he was rarely able to go outside, except to visit hospital or Tracy’s house. Tracy went to extreme lengths to meet his complex health needs and was vigilant of exposure to infections. She constantly kept her home and car clinically clean - not just for the 16 hours a week he was in her care. Tracy was able to open up his world and give his parents their first respite in years before he sadly passed away 18 months later. Tracy’s supervising social worker Janet Butterworth said: “I cannot put into words the awe that I feel for what she has achieved, and I know that his parents cannot thank her enough
for what she has done.” Deborah became a foster carer two years ago as a result of seeing a poster on the back of a bus and has since turned her passion for horse riding into a fundraising activity on behalf of The Fostering Network. Deborah runs a livery yard for horses and for the past five years she has organised a sponsored horse ride on Ashdown Forest. For the last two years, the chosen charity has been The Fostering Network as it is a cause close to her and her partner Mark Jackson’s hearts. This year 160 riders took part in the event raising almost £3,000. Deborah said: “To be able to offer a secure, loving home to a child or young person who has had a difficult start in life is hugely rewarding. “We immediately set out to see how we could raise money doing something we love – horse riding – to support The Fostering Network. I’m aiming to make the ride even bigger year on year and raise even more money for The Fostering Network!” Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network, said: “It takes enormous heart and a gentle spirit to devote your life to caring for children with
life limiting conditions. Tracy personifies kindness and we’re delighted to be presenting her with this award. “Deborah engages so many in her activities, not only by providing something amazing and fun for them to do, but also by spreading awareness of foster care and how it can change the lives of children and young people. Our work can only continue if we have the backing of the fostering, and wider, community. We’re proud to have supporters like Deborah and her fiancé Mark.” There are currently around 650 children in West Sussex in foster care. Stephen Hillier, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children - Start of Life said: “It is thanks to foster carers like Deborah and Tracy that children are given new opportunities and it can be life-changing. “We are always looking for new foster carers to offer children a loving home and, with our support, provide someone with a much happier childhood and a better chance of a better adulthood.” For more information, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering or call 0330 222 7775.

Regus to the rescue
Wobblegate: apple of the foodie’s eye
Regus, the global workspace provider, is coming to the aid of businesses and commuters in Horsham, by offering free workspace to workers on train strike days. The company is giving free access to their business lounge at Horsham Worthing Road, offering stranded commuters a professional workspace, Wi-Fi and complimentary refreshments. The latest strikes ran until midnight on Thursday 13 October, and again, between 00.01 Tuesday 18 October to 23:59 Thursday 20 October, with future strikes planned as follows: 00:01 Thursday 3 November to 23:59 Saturday 5 November 00:01 Tuesday 22 November to 23:59 Wednesday 23 November 00:01 Tuesday 6 December to 23:59 Thursday 8 December Richard Morris, UK CEO at Regus, explained: “We simply want to provide a convenient solution for businesses amidst
Mid-Sussex juice company again shortlisted for top food award alongside major names After its victory in last year’s category for Fruit Juices & Smoothies, Mid-Sussex’s familyrun Wobblegate Juices has again been shortlisted for a national Quality Food Award, alongside Asda and Marks & Spencer. Wobblegate’s 2015 winner was Cox & Bramley Apple Juice. This year, it is in the running with itsdelicious Apple & Pear Juice, proving that Wobblegate, based on a farm near Haywards Heath and committed to both artisan values and an entrepreneurial approach, can compete consistently at the highest level. 32-year-old Tom Stephens, founder and managing director of Wobblegate, is delighted that consumers are choosing the products of a smaller, family-run business: “It was a wonderful surprise to win such a big award last year. To be shortlisted again, alongside such major household names, is a testament to the quality of our juices and to the exacting standards we set ourselves.” From small beginnings 7 years ago on the Stephens family’s fruit farm, Wobblegate has built a high-profile national clientèle - including historic Royal Palaces such as Hampton Court and Kensington Palace, Kew Gardens, the National Gallery and the Palace

For many commuters, working from home on these days is not a realistic proposition - perhaps they don’t have the space, or are concerned about technology failures or being interrupted. Our workspaces enable people to arrive, plug-in and get working. “The strikes raise larger questions about the commuting model in today’s age. Businesses may well find that letting their staff work from more convenient and flexible locations, on strike days, could lead them to reassess their attitude towards the fixed workplace in the future.” The Regus workspace is available on a first-come first-served basis. The prizewinners in the 2016 Quality Food Awards will be announced on November 10 at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. The company has recently hit the heights by becoming a supplier to the British Airways i360, the observation tower that opened
in Brighton in August: Its juices can now be enjoyed at an elevation of over 160 metres, along with a magnificent view of the East Sussex coastline. Wobblegate are also again up for Sussex Drinks producer of the Year! Don’t Believe a Word Trick or Treat returns to “I’m a sceptic. But don’t take my word for it. Or indeed anybody’s. For anything....” This is the premise of Mitch Benn’s new critically acclaimed show. It’s sure to make you laugh a lot and think a bit as well, as Mitch debunks myths, exposes nonsense and grapples with the very nature of knowledge itself, extolling the virtues of an evidence-based approach to life ... with amusing consequences and, of course, a few songs along the way. The ‘Now Show’ aside, following on from the success of ‘Mitch Benn Is The 37th Beatle’ last year, a further three specials on music icons, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Elvis, have recently been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 - ‘The Freewheelin’ Mitch Benn’, ‘Mitch Benn Is The Fat Pink Duke’ and ‘Mitch Benn Has Left The Building’. Last year, he also co-pre-
sented, with Harry Shearer, BBC Radio 2’s ‘Anatomy Of A Guitar’ and presented ‘Spank The Plank’ for BBC Radio 4. Mitch is the author of two novels, ‘Terra’ and ‘Terra’s World’, both published by Gollancz and co-author with Jon Holmes of ‘The Twitter History Of The World’, the paperback edition of which was published by Prion Books in September 2015. The show has been described as ‘Britain’s leading musical satirist’ The Times; ‘A truly superb, must see show’ Young Perspective *****; ‘Funny and clever’ The Sunday Herald For more information on Mitch, please visit: www. mitchbenn.com or Contact: Office: 0207 223 7112 Ian: 07850 317749 / imwpuk@ aol.com Ollie: 07876 Performance: Thursday 10 November at 7.45pm, The Capitol Studio, Horsham Tickets: £13, available from The Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 or on-line: www.thecapitolhorsham. com
Horsham Town Centre
As part of Horsham’s Autumn Half Term festivities, Horsham Rotary Club, supported by Horsham District Council, are once again bringing back the old custom of Trick or Treating to the Town Centre, from October 22 until October 30. Accompanied (pre-teenage) children are invited to visit participating shops, where they will draw Halloween Cards, to discover whether they have won
a treat or will have to perform a ‘trick’. Naturally, the tricks are not too nasty or onerous. The event keeps the children occupied for a few hours and, as well as being a lot of fun, will likely reward them with quite a few ‘sweet’ treats. They also have to obtain passwords from the shops, to be entered onto a form, for a chance of winning some great cash prizes. Entry to the competition is free.

Madness and Mayhem in Pantoland
“I remember the year that the Dame had terrible trouble with his bloomers. The elastic had gone, so all during the show they kept falling down and tripping him up. In
Ready, steady, beans on toast! We know that entertaining the children can be tricky during half term, which is why Tomfoolery is back at The Capitol Studio for two dates. On Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October, Tomfoolery will return with his perennially popular Beans on Toast show. Re vamped and re-toasted, it’s better than ever! There are four performances, including a SEND friendly performance on Thursday 27 at 1.30pm, with the other shows at 11am and 1.30pm. The Beans on Toast show has proved to be very popular during its last few tours and regularly sells out. This year’s version will contain just as much fun, games and general goofiness, which you’d expect from the south’s leading children’s entertainer, but for those seasoned theatre goers it’s got plenty of new stuff to entertain too. The SEND friendly performance will contain all the magical ingredients of the Beans on Toast show, just created in a slightly more empathetic way, including lights up throughout, a warning of any loud
noises and plenty of understanding from the audience. There’s even a special video on Tomfoolery’s website, which storyboards the Capitol Theatre experience, giving children the chance to see what the theatre is like, before they arrive. Go to http://partytom. com/send-friendly-shows/for the
video. Tickets are selling fast, so visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com to book, or call the box office on 01403 750220, and whilst you’re there, don’t forget to book tickets for Christmas Foolery - Tomfoolery’s festive show! Attachments area

The curtains swooped on so fast, they wrapped themselves right around the principle boy, who completely disappeared, and poor Snow White was left singing the love duet on her own. “This year, with our fabulous TV cast, including BBCTV`s Really Wild Show presenter, Howie Watkins, BBC Radio`s Allison Ferns and from TV`s Brookside, Allen Mechen, it’s likely that the mayhem will continue. PETs POST Sponsored by
Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Understanding your dog’s behaviour abbi moon RSPCA
This month, we take a look at dog behaviour. It’s important that you provide for your dog’s behavioural needs in order to keep them feeling happy. Some key questions to ask yourself are •Are toys, feeding enrichment and chews available to your dog on a daily basis to prevent them becoming bored? Are they safe
and suitable for your dog? •Does your dog have plenty of opportunities to rest undisturbed when needed? •Does your dog have opportunity to play with other friendly dogs or people? •Does your dog get the daily exercise they need to be fit, active and stimulated? •Does your dog get additional opportunities for toileting? •Do all those who interact with your dog know when he/her behaviour when fit and healthy? Are changes in behaviour monitored, are processes in place if there is a change in behaviour?
•What methods of training are used? Are they all positive reward methods? Are harsh potentially painful or frightening training methods avoided? •Is your dog introduced gradually and positively to things which they might find frightening? Understanding your dog’s behaviour can help you – and your family – to have a happy, healthy relationship for many years. If you are worried about your dog’s behaviour, then speak to your vet for advice, and if necessary referral to a properly accredited behaviourist.

Remember remember ‘dogs’ on the 5th November! With Halloween and Bonfire Night fast approaching, Wagging Tails Home Dog Boarding reminds dog owners that this can be a traumatic time of year for our four-legged friends. For many of us we enjoy the Halloween fun and the sight, smell and sound of fireworks but what about your dog? How do you keep your dog safe? A big danger at this time of year is dogs being spooked and running away. Walk your dog during daylight hours before fireworks and trick or treaters are likely. Then keep dogs inside, draw the curtains and have a television or radio on to mask the sound. Do not allow dogs access to the front door if trick or treaters in Halloween costumes come calling, shut them safely in another room. There are things that you
can do to help your dog relax through the fireworks such as giving them access to a ‘den’, perhaps under furniture or in a covered crate, where they feel comfortable and safe. Discuss a DAP diffuser with your Vet or calming tablets depending on the severity of your dog’s anxiety. Ideally all dogs will have been acclimatised as pups to as many sights and sounds as possible and if you remain calm and relaxed this will give positive signals. Do stroke or cuddle your dog if this helps them to relax or do let them hide under furniture if they prefer. Make sure your garden is secure and keep collar and ID tag on your dog for their toilet visit to the garden. All of us at Wagging Tails Home Dog Boarding wish you a happy and relaxed Bonfire Night!

Help my dog’s ear has swollen up
There are a number of conditions that could cause sudden swelling of the ear. You should contact your vet as soon as possible for advice to ensure the best treatment is offered for whatever situation your dog is dealing with. Injury to the ear flap (pinna) Dogs’ ears, in particular dogs with droopy or floppy ears, can easily become damaged or injured when subject to a blow or trauma. The ear tissue responds to damage by swelling and becoming painful and these symptoms are usually best checked over by one of our
vets to make sure they will heal properly. Allergy/Insect bite A common cause for swelling (especially for dogs who stick their noses in all sorts of places) is a reaction to a bite or sting from an insect (or even plants such as nettles8 These lumps will generally be round in shape and cause obvious (but short lived) irritation to your dog. If they have been stung but don’t seem to be displaying any severe symptoms, then they probably don’t need veterinary attention. Using a cold compress to soothe the pain may
offer some relief for your pet. If your dog is having a more serious reaction with signs of difficulty breathing, collapse, as well as rapid swelling of the area, call us immediately. Infection Skin infection and infestations (with bacteria, yeasts or mange mites) are another possible cause of inflammation of the ear. If you notice oozing, scabs, pus or redness then this can indicate a possible infection. These can usually be treated quite simply, again contact us for an appointment with a vet. Aural Haematoma Aural haematoma is probably the most common condition you will find refered to when scouring the internet for explanations. What is it? A haematoma is a collection of blood (like a blood-blister) within a tissue, in this case, the ear flap. It generally occurs consequently to another ear related problem such as ear mites or an infection. These ailments irritate your dog causing head shaking and ear scratching. The impact from shaking and scratching can cause blood to leak from damaged and
ruptured vessels in the ear and gather between the skin and cartilage causing swelling within the ear flap. How does it look? The ear flap may be fully swollen or there may just be one part that is particularly enlarged. It may be either soft or hard to touch depending on how full it is. It will more than likely be very sore and distressing for your dog initially. Although aural haematomas will subside on their own after a few weeks it can be uncomfortable for your pet and may leave the ear badly misshapen. Therefore, treatment and immediate care by one of our vets is recommended. Treatment There are several ways to treat a haematoma. Sometimes, using a needle to drain the fluid in the swelling is successful, however it is often necessary to drain it more than once and sometimes three or four times. Injection of steroid medicines into the ear can be tried. In many cases though the best way to treat a haematoma is via surgery. An incision is made into the swollen site under anaesthetic. The blood and fluid
is drained and the inner and outer ear surfaces are sutured together to ensure smooth healing and to close the gap where the blood has been collecting. In some dogs, for example Bassetts, the ear maybe taped up and strapped around the head to keep it from dangling and getting re-damaged. Your dog may also be given a buster collar to prevent them from scratching their ears and causing further damage. Prevention Dogs with low hanging ears are at a higher risk as they are more likely to get harmed by being knocked and scratched. Dogs prone to ear infections and parasites have an increased chance of getting a haematoma as they will be irritated by the symptoms of these problems. If a haematoma is diagnosed it is crucial to treat any other related issues (such as underlying ear infections) to prevent the same thing happening again. If your dog has a swollen ear it is usually best to give us a ring so one of our vets or nurses can advise you on the best way to deal with it.
Bad dog? Underlying pain could be reason Fido won’t fetch As man’s best friend, dogs are always eager to please and do as we ask. And for those four-legged friends who are misbehaving, there is a small army of dog trainers across the country on hand to help bring playful pets to heel. But a canine expert is calling on professionals, in the dog training world, to consider underlying pain when dealing with unruly canines and has launched a new course to help trainers recognise when pets could be suffering. Julia Roberston is the founder of Galen Myotherapy - a unique hands-on remedy used to treat dogs suffering from musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis and compensatory issues brought about from a condition, past trauma or repetitive strain. She has been using Galen Myotherapy for the last 14 years, and in that time has successfully treated hundreds of dogs, and seen her practice adopted by veterinary and canine professionals worldwide. Julia, who has a background in farming and veterinary medicine, is now extending her expertise by launching a new course, specifically for dog trainers, to help them spot the signs of underlying, musculoskeletal pain in canines, which is often suffered in silence. She said: “So many dogs display pain by not doing something coming to heel, sitting when told or allowing themselves to be petted. The owner is then told their dog is being naughty, difficult or something similar. But how often is the question asked ‘can they do it?’ ‘are they too uncomfortable to do it?’.
“Dogs are intrinsically honest and there is usually a reason for them not doing as they are requested - a deep discomfort or pain could so easily be one of the reasons and so often overlooked completely.” Through her Galen Therapy Centre, based in West Sussex, Julia already delivers diplomas in Galen Myotherapy and canine first aid. She is launching her new course, as dog trainers see so many pets within their role and are well placed to spot underlying conditions. Julia added: “The course aims to give trainers a greater understanding of how a dog moves, what areas of the dog can become compromised and give them the skills to pass on techniques to pet owners that they can use at home. “Trainers will be taught exercises, to support dogs in pain, that can be used in their sessions or passed on to owners to be used at home. These exercises will enhance the dog’s flexibility and balance, to ease their pain and discomfort, or highlight an issue that needs further veterinary attention. “All the training we offer at the Galen Therapy Centre helps us build toward our ultimate goal helping to prolong the quality of life for all dogs, no matter their age, breed or need.” The course - How to recognise and help chronic pain issues in dogs for the Professional Dog Trainer - is launching in early 2017. For more information, and to book a place on an upcoming course, call the Galen Therapy Centre on 01444 881027 or email mail@caninetherapy.co.uk.

ARLA offers advice for students when looking to rent a student property With the university term in full flow, many students will be looking ahead to secure their rental property for next year over the coming weeks. Most students won’t have dealt with a letting agent before, and although universities usually offer services to help students with their property search, there are
several things to consider which can help with the process of finding a suitable home. Students looking to privately rent a property at university should follow the below tips from The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) Finding the right property for you
As a starting point, it is important you choose the correct letting agent for your search. One way to ensure peace-of-mind is to register your search with an ARLA agent – all of whom adhere to a strict code of conduct. When you find an agent, you should not feel pressured into handing over money straight away and remember that rents are negotiable. If possible, you should speak to the current tenants about their experience of living in the property. Costs and fees Where is your deposit going? Before you move in you will be required to pay a security deposit, which is usually around six weeks rent – although it can be slightly more or less. Your deposit must be protected in one of the three government-authorised tenancy deposit protection schemes legally, so make sure your letting agent shows you evidence of this. If you do not receive the full details, ask your letting agent for them as soon as possible. Don’t forget about the bills Don’t forget to factor in additional bills on top of your weekly or monthly rental cost when working out your budget. Unless your contract states water, gas and electricity costs are included in the rent, tenants are jointly responsible for paying this separately to the providers. You should take meter readings at the start of the tenancy and regularly throughout the year to ensure you’re only paying for what you use. While students aren’t required to pay council tax, if you live with any non-students they will be responsible for paying it (discounts may be given in this situation) so ensure this is addressed properly. The TV licence is also an important cost to factor in. Paying
a monthly amount is an easy way to make your payments more manageable and avoid the annual lump sum. Moving in… Inventory It is important to make sure your letting agent or landlord organises a comprehensive inventory before you move in. This should state exactly what condition the property is in. It will also list all the fixtures and furniture that come with the property, so it’s clear what belongs to the landlord and what is your property. A good inventory will help you avoid disputes at the end of your tenancy. Keep it clean Cleaning your property regularly and maintaining the garden will help to avoid bills when your tenancy comes to an end. Don’t be scared of reporting any repair issues, if something breaks in the property, tell your agent. It’ll make your life easier and more comfortable if things are back in order quickly – an agent can’t fix a problem if they don’t know it exists. Moving out… The condition of the property You have to return the property in the same condition as it was at the start of the tenancy. Nothing should be left that wasn’t there when you arrived – and this means both inside and outside areas. Properties left in a poor state of cleanliness and unkempt gardens are the main causes of disputes over deposits. Your deposit should be returned promptly with any deductions for broken furniture, damage, or bills for cleaning. If your landlord challenges it, remember you can always take advantage of the free and impartial dispute resolution procedures provided by the scheme your deposit was protected through.

New look Hawks off to a winning start Basketball Dave Snith - Sports Editor A much changed Horsham Hawks U16’s opened their season with an excellent 67-43 home win against Crawley Crusaders at Collyer’s College. The squad featured five debutants who had not previously played league basketball and despite conceding the opening bucket the front five of Hawks soon had the visitors under pressure, building up a 14-4 lead with good baskets from Kieran Lee and Jamie Atkins. Crusaders mounted a spir-
ited reply clawing the deficit to just 3 before Lee drove inside to close the quarter with Hawks up 16-11. The second period opened in blistering fashion for the home team going on an 11 zip run with Lee dominating up front and with outstanding defence ensuring Crusaders found it difficult to get into any sort of offensive rhythm. Despite closing 3’s from the visitors just before the half, Hawks held a comfortable 33-22 lead going into the 3rd quarter. Early Q3 scores included Jamie Miller and Atkins while James Maclean hit back to back mid-range

jumpers. The points continued to flow while defensively Hawks were in control with Ollie Hutt in particular being dominant and the period drew to a close with Hawks up 48-33. Q4 started well for Crusaders narrowing the deficit to 11 before a 3 from Josh Raby settled any nerves. Hawks relaxed into the closing stages playing some exquisite basketball including an outstanding fast break with George Makin converting and the final score of the game from debutant David Farr concluding an excellent 67-43 win.

Junior Football Round Up Horsham Sparrows U13 – Sparrows had a disappointing result in the Plate competition away to Brockham Badgers Whites. Sparrows rode their luck in the first half but held on to go in 0 – 0 at the break. Brockham continued to dominate the game and ran out as eventual 3 – 0 winners. MoM Daniel. Horsham Sparrows U14 – In an away game at Hassocks, the team played very well scored early then played some very exciting football. Goals were scored at regular intervals with Brad getting 6, Charlie 1, Sean1 Ashley 2, Lewis1, Luke 1 and Jack1. Horsham Sparrows U16 – A close game away to Greenway saw the team’s level at the final whistle. No goals in extra time meant penalties with Greenway edging it 4-3 to progress in the Plate. MoM Tom D. Horsham Sparrows U11 girls – Sparrows played away to an experienced Cuckfield Cosmos team and despite losing, played some great football with Issy scoring the goal of the match. GoG Grace H. Horsham Sparrows Under 15 Girls – The girls started well in this cup match against Worthing, Alice scoring a great goal after 20 minutes and then Charley making it 2-0 before half-time. Second half was tighter but some good defending allowed Sparrows to increase their lead with Charley getting her second goal of the game. Worthing got a late consolation but Sparrows secured their first win of the season. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – Sparrows ladies started in dominant style against Montpellier leading 1-0 with
an early strike from Lucy M. The Montpellier keeper made a string of saves in a one-sided first half but a mistake by the defence on the stroke of half time let in an equaliser. The second half saw a resurgent Montpellier with the game sealed for the visitors with a deflected effort that left the Sparrows ladies bitterly disappointed. Cranleigh Youth U16 2 – 1 Chesworth Rovers U16 Chesworth crashed out of the Edwin Hill Cup at the hands of last season’s champions Cranleigh Youth. The match, between two very closely matched sides, was always on a knife edge with Cranleigh shading a goalless first half. Below-par Rovers conceded two soft goals early in the second period and only then began to play their usual free-flowing football, with Archie Talbot pulling a goal back but Cranleigh held on for a victory. Steyning Town U13 2 - 3 Chesworth Rovers U13 Cup action this weekend in the John Laker memorial cup U13’s Steyning Town hosted Chesworth Rovers in the John Laker memorial cup. This fixture is historically close and this match was no different. Tom Miller opened the scoring for Chesworth before Josh Hayes continued his scoring efforts and left Steyning stunned with a superb volley. Just before the break Steyning struck one back. Chesworth were pegged back when Steyning scored soon after the restart, but Toby Shepheard hit the winner to secure Chesworth a place in round 3.
Horsham gymnasts perform well at south east competition Some of the Horsham squad
Athletics Mark Furth was first home in the second running of the Heron Way 10k trail run, smashing his own course record by over 2.5 minutes in the process with a time of exactly 38.00. Horsham Joggers’ Lucinda Potten followed up her first place at the Alf Shrub 5k by being first female home in a course record of 43mins and 19 seconds. Almost 200 people took on the undulating course that leads through St Leonard’s Forest, starting and finishing at Heron Way Primary School. The race received enthu-
siastic support from the pupils of the school; many of them had taken part in the earlier fun run, which saw over 100 children take on the 1 mile course around the school grounds. In the ‘parents’ race Michael Dargue, in 42:32, won the men’s race and Marisa Morley won the women’s race in 46:43. Michael Dargue has noticed a difference at the school since the event began, saying, “Having the run organised by the PTA has definitely helped with the fitness of the whole school! You see a lot more parents out running. It has shown a lot of people who didn’t
run, that running 10k is something that almost anyone can do if they put their mind to it. It’s great for the kids too, seeing their mums and dads exercising and keeping fit.” Organiser Amanda Hannan is already planning next year’s event. “We want to become a real fixture in the local running calendar and are lucky to already have support from local companies such as Redwood Financial, RSA, Yazoo, Up & Running and Britweb. It has been quite an effort to get the event organised but the fantastic feedback we have had has made it all worth it”
Artistic Gymnastics Dave Smith - Sports Editor
The 5 and 8 hour artistic squad gymnasts at Horsham Gymnastics Centre have been competing in the South East Floor and Vault competition over the last few weekends. In the 8 hour Silver category Darcey was placed 6th, Ellie 7th and finally in the 8 hour girls gold category Sophie was 3rd. Both Horsham coaches Amy and Katie are very proud of what their gymnasts have achieved at such a big competition.

Battling Horsham confirm promise Horsham Captain Charlotte (CJ) White
South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Ladies 2 - 0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter A Horsham team depleted by
injuries and unavailability played better as the game went on but were unable to claw back the hosts’ two goal half time lead. Horsham began well, winning good tackles, but ball retention and possession was an early problem before Tulse Hill went ahead from a deflection from a short corner injection and then followed
up with an open play tap in. The second half was a different story, with a more positive approach Horsham attacks created opportunities but table leaders Tulse Hill kept them at bay. The high scoring Londoners have won four of their five games, but Horsham gave a good account of themselves, keeping the margin tighter than other combatants to date. Ladies’ Club Captain CJ White told the District Post: “Tulse Hill are a strong, successful side and we did very well to contain them and give ourselves chances in the nil, nil second half. We’ve got heaps of potential and we’ve got the skill, but not the experience. All of our other ladies’ sides won today, so the future is bright. Meanwhile, the first team are playing better as a unit, but we’re not the finished article yet” The eighth-placed ladies return home tomorrow (Saturday) to entertain their Oxford University counterparts at Broadbridge Heath. The University side are sixth in the table after beating bottom club Woking 1-0 last week.

Frustrated Horsham bow out of the cup Will Bell’s early penalty was Horsham’s only score
RFU Intermediate Cup Round 1 Hammersmith & Fulham 36 - 3 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham began brightly against Hammersmith and Fulham at Hurlingham Park, controlling the start of the game and taking the lead from a Will Bell penalty in the opening minutes, but they trailed 21-3 at the break. With the wind in their favour in the second half a Horsham victory was by no means impossible against moderate opposition from the London NW Division 2 league, Horsham’s equivalent level. But, the game ended in frustration for well beaten Horsham, Head coach Nick Stocker telling the District Post: “We were missing some key senior players and I think Hammersmith were more or less at full strength, but we had the beating of them. We were unquestionably the better side in the opening
set pieces but our attacking was suspect and we gave away far too many needless penalties, making life very difficult for ourselves. We won’t win games when we do that. On another day one or two things might have gone in our favour but we have no complaints - as the game went on we played as individuals rather than a team and they were better organised. It was simply a bad day at the office for us.” Tomorrow (Saturday) sixth placed Horsham travel to Crowborough for a league fixture. Crowborough are bottom with five defeats from five starts and have scored fewer points and conceded more than any other team in the league, but Nick Stocker is taking nothing for granted, saying: “This is the sort of game we definitely need to win but we’ll still have regular first teamers on holiday so it’ll be a challenge for us to make sure that we bring home the points.”
Boro’s cup runneth over Photo by John Lines Ryman League Division 1 South Horsham 1 – 1 Whyteleafe Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham’s good run of form continued as they took a point from an entertaining match against Whyteleafe to consolidate their mid-table position. Dom Di Paola was without the influential Tony Nwachukwu, Tom Lawley and Lee Carney so was grateful for the return of Darren Boswell to the starting line-up after a number of weeks out. The Hornets got off to a great start by grabbing a sixth minute opening goal. After Terry Dodd’s free kick rebounded off the defensive wall the Horsham striker collected the ball himself and crossed into the area where Dan Sackman glanced a header past visiting ‘keeper Luke Colquhourn.
At this stage Horsham were the better side with Boswell not showing any signs of being not match fit as his pace and skill on the ball caused a number of scares at the back for Whyteleafe. Boswell’s impact however was short lived as he was suddenly taken ill and was replaced by Matt Whitehead after 35 minutes. Liam MacDevitt picked up the creative mantle from Boswell as Horsham continued to have the better of the play but the threat was always there and Josh Pelling was twice called upon to deny the opposition an equaliser. As a number of half chances and near misses came and went for Horsham they were made to pay the price in first half added time. The Achilles’ heel for Horsham this season has been their ability to loose concentration at the back, and it was again as a totally unmarked Andrew Mensah headed past Pelling
for an equaliser seconds before the break. Both teams continued to play entertaining football after the restart with Whyteleafe having slightly the better of the second 45 minutes. Mensah, buoyed by his goal, grew in confidence as the game progressed and was a constant threat to Pelling’s goal. It was from a Mensah effort that the game’s most controversial incident came when with 75 minutes played the Whyteleafe striker hit a goal bound shot that came off Steve Metcalf’s arm only for the referee to wave away the vociferous Whyteleafe penalty appeals. The final 15 minutes saw the same end to end play witnessed in the previous 75 but neither team were able to turn their efforts into a winning goal and a point each at the final whistle was a fair result.
RFU Senior Vase - Round 1 Pulborough 89 - 9 Sheppey Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter After a competitive league match against Sheppey in Kent the week before Pulborough were expecting a challenge in the return cup fixture - only to face a second XV side, to which they administered a resounding thrashing. At the interval the score was 34-9, a commanding if not certain lead, but the second session was all Boro, by a 55-nil margin, despite the game being terminated ten minutes early by mutual agreement, relieving Sheppey of further embarrassing punishment. In total Boro got over the line 15 times with Will Scrase and Ollie Burnett scoring five tries each, Captain Simon Burfiend two and Alfie Allingham, Harry Scrase and Harry Bullock, one apiece.
There were seven conversions, mostly by fly half George Lee, stepping up from the colts. Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “Because of a charity function at their club Sheppey brought a much weaker side than the one we encountered in Kent recently. We’re playing well and the result will give us a further confidence boost. We wait to discover who we’ll be drawn against in the next round on November 12. Meanwhile, tomorrow (Saturday) we’re at sixth placed Eastbourne in the league. We lost last time we went there so we want to put that right! It’s great to see us executing our game plans and to be top after winning all five of our league matches this season, but that increases the pressure on ourselves to maintain that, and of course every team likes to topple the league leaders, so we need to stay focussed.”

Horsham go third with impressive team win South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 - 1 Havant Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Another outstanding all round performance from Horsham at their highest ever league level moves them up to third. Havant had Argentine gold medallist Tomas Santiago from the Rio Olympics in goal but it was Horsham’s new Captain Andy Isaacs who pulled off the impressive saves, keeping out clusters of short corners - five consecutive set pieces coming in the opening minutes - with heroic upright and prone denials. New signing Ellis Woolley put Horsham ahead from a short in the thirteenth minute, the score remaining 1- 0 at the break. Straight after the resumption Freddie Campbell broke away, only to be thwarted close to goal but Horsham increased their lead soon afterwards, Woolley completing another short. Then a Horsham attack across the goal came to nought until, against the run of play, Havant opened up the home defence for the only time of the match to reduce the deficit. A John Burroughs foray and subsequent short corner were averted before a Horsham breakaway petered out. Havant kept pressing but could not convert four more shorts, Isaacs saving at full stretch against the club he had joined as a 16 year old. At

the death Horsham had the chance to win 3-1 but, with the keeper going the wrong way, Matt Hough’s penalty flick hit the post. Coming into this game I thought we might struggle to get a point but our new players have bonded in really well like - its goals that count!” Former Horsham captain John Burroughs praised Andy Isaacs saying: “He’s really stepped up massively this season. After his storming saves last week he was even better this time!” The skipper modestly summed up with: “That was just a great team performance.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit fifth in the table Banbury, who beat bottom club Guildford 3-1 last week.

Ryman Football League South Division Horsham 1 - 2 Greenwich Borough Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In August Horsham lost 4-1 to high flying Greenwich Borough but this time it was far closer, Horsham being denied a share of the points at the death. Repeated energy from Liam MacDevitt culminated in a
breakaway down the left enabling Matt Whitehead to place the ball into the top right corner to give Horsham the lead in the 34th minute. A Greenwich free kick had sailed over the bar and then a tame shot went wide, but they made amends by drawing level through Robert Denness within a minute of Horsham scoring. Greenwich were yellow carded twice and Horsham attacked with a throw in from the right until, against the run of play, Mohamed Eisa scored to give the visitors the
lead. Horsham enjoyed first half possession but Greenwich had taken their chances for their 2-1 advantage. On resumption Lewis Hyde was sanctioned for Horsham and Greenwich had a corner, a spate of attacks and a dangerous free kick from the right before Horsham shot straight at the keeper. Greenwich fired wide and then hit the post and suddenly Horsham were on the back foot, until they rallied with attacks, but Greenwich were awarded a controversial penalty. Although Josh Pelling’s spectacular full stretch save gave Horsham new heart, a late attack left supporters wondering how Terry Dodd’s shot failed to snatch the draw. Horsham Manager Dom di Paola told the District Post: “Their equaliser immediately after we’d scored was a blow, and we had a quiet 20 minutes in the second half but Greenwich have won ten games – they’re top and will probably win the league, so we did well, especially as we were missing Tom Lawley and Tony Nwachukuw on holiday.” Horsham are in league action again tomorrow, Saturday, at Reigate against eighth placed South Park, who beat Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday.

Lacklustre YM losing ground on leaders SCFL Premier Division Arundel 1 – 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA battled out their second successive draw following the goalless encounter against Pagham a week earlier with this point a piece at lowly Arundel. It was another lacklustre display from YM who should have come away with more than a point from a team that have only 8 points from their 11 games so far. Although of course it’s still early days YM need to get their act together quickly or they will become isolated from the leaders Shoreham, on 33 points, and the pack chasing them; YM now have 20 points. YM set themselves an uphill task early on when after just 6 minutes of play their static
defence watched a harmless cross land at the feet of Asa Nicholson who had plenty of time and space to shoot past Mark Fox. A few half chances then fell to both sides before just before the half hour YM levelled and in doing so completed the only action of note for the remainder of the match. Phil Johnson picked up a loose ball after Sam Schaaf had blocked a clearance and then broke into the area before picking out Max Howell who gave ‘keeper Stuart McDonald no chance with his shot. And that as they say was that. The rest of the half and the following 45 minutes of the second period was a stale and ponderous affair lacking in any quality or excitement that deteriorated along with the weather. The draw was a fair result as neither side deserved all three but it is all three points that YM need to start taking from matches, and quickly.
Photo by Gary Chester SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 0 - 2 Shoreham Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Heath manager Steve Painter was forced to make changes just minutes before the start with Piers McDermott suffering the after effects of a flight back from the USA so a quick shuffle of his pack and a change of game plan was needed before the match got underway. The visitors had the first chance of the game on 9 minutes when Rob O’Toole headed a Scott Packer corner over the bar and on 13 minutes good play by Heath’s
Jake Holmes saw the striker cut inside and hit a shot just wide of the post. The opening goal was scored midway through the half when Niall O’Hagan powered in a near post header from a corner and that’s how it remained at the break with neither side creating too many clear chances and both teams’ defences on top. The visitor’s had the edge after the break and came close to a second goal when Jake Chadwick headed a corner narrowly wide. Heath’s best move of the half saw Shaun Findlay break away and pick out Dean Wright who hit a first time right foot effort just over the crossbar. In the final 10 minutes of the match Michael Chester made a goal-line clear-
ance to deny Shoreham’s George Gaskyn and when the Heath keeper was beaten minutes later Andy Howard was there to clear Gaskyn’s effort off the line. In the final minutes of the match Heath were awarded a free-kick wide on the right of the Shoreham penalty area. They gambled and pushed everyone up front in search of an equaliser but the ball was cleared and on the counter attack Rob O’Toole went through on goal and converted past Chester to make the game safe. Few could argue that the visitors deserved the victory which sees them maintain pole position in the league following their excellent start to the season.
