Appeal after motorcyclist dies in crash phil dennett News Editor
Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal crash near Horsham. A motorcyclist died in the accident on the Bognor Road northwest of Horsham which claimed the life of a motorcyclist. The crash happened at the

A29’s junction with Marches Road, west of Kingsfold, at about 1.10pm on Sunday and involved a black Honda CBR600 motorcycle and a silver Iveco-Ford horsebox lorry.
Despite the efforts of a doctor and paramedics to save him the motorcyclist died at the scene. He has since been named as Darren Arnell, aged 42, from Bognor Regis. The lorry driver, a 43-yearold woman from Warnham, was unhurt. Two horses in the vehicle were unloaded at a nearby farm, both having been left in a distressed state by the collision. The A29 was closed for about four-and-a-half hours while emergency services, including the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance, dealt with the aftermath of the crash. Sgt Tony Crisp, of the Sussex and Surrey road policing unit, said: “We’d like to hear from anyone who saw the collision or who noticed either vehicle being driven shortly beforehand. “They are asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police. uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Riverstown.” He added: “Because of the need to impose road closures, we’d also like to thank people whose journeys were disrupted for their patience and understanding.”

Shoppers saw plenty of poppy appeal when three attractive singers entertained them at Swan Walk on Remembrance Sunday. The colourful dresses of the Spinettes group at the Retroesque were adorned with a bright poppy pattern to mark the day. The trio entertained the crowds in Sawn Walk with nos-
talgic songs, prompting some people to dance. The session was arranged as a light-hearted tribute to the fallen. More serious ceremonies saw hundreds of people attend the Armistice Day and Remembrance Day services in the town centre. Among them children from St Mary’s CE Primary School and Arunside Primary

New ambulance service providers People needing non-emergency ambulance transport have new operators after a firm’s contract was ended. South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust will be running the Sussex Patient Transport Service in full from next April. The takeover is being phased in until then to minimise disruption. The Trust is taking over from Coperforma, which only started running the service in April and agreed to stand down after complaints about the poor quality of its service. The Trust said of the Coperforma contract: “The start of the new contract saw unacceptable levels of performance, both in making bookings and with the transport itself. Patients and health professionals had difficulty getting through on the phone lines and many patients were collected late or not at all. “Performance has improved, although the improvements are not consistent across the whole of Sussex and some patients continue to experience problems. Recently, there have been a number of issues between Coperforma and some of its subcontractors, which have raised concerns about the sustainability of the service. In September,
the Clinical Commissioning Groups stepped in to pay staff of Dockland Medical Services after the company stopped providing the patient transport service for Sussex patients. “Now Coperforma has agreed to step down from the contract. “ The trust has 40 years’ experience, and currently provides the patient transport service across the whole of the South Central region, including Hampshire and the Thames Valley area of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. James Underhay, Deputy Chief Executive of the trust, said: “SCAS is under no illusion that taking on delivery of this service will be challenging and that we need to stabilise the service before we can begin to make significant improvements to it. We fully recognise that this is a difficult period for the patients who rely on the service and the staff who provide it. I want to reassure Sussex patients that we at SCAS are fully committed to providing the service that they expect and deserve from the NHS, and to reassure the staff who will be joining us that we will provide them with the support and tools that they need to deliver a great service.”

Purple carpet on way as 12,000 bulbs planted Horsham will enjoy a carpet of purple crocus colour in the spring after 12,000 bulbs were planted in only two and half hours. Green Gym’s bulb planting was part of a revamp of the World War 1 remembrance flowerbed near Park House at Horsham Park. In the spring there should be a show of purple crocus, followed by red
It’s always nice to get a group of people outside working to a common purpose and having a chat with people you wouldn’t otherwise talk to poppies, grasses and wildflowers. Horsham Rotary Club gave the bulbs to raise awareness of its international Purple4Polio Campaign. Rotarian William Harmsworth said: “Each child recipient of the oral vaccine in countries where polio is still a real danger is marked by dipping one finger in an indelible purple dye. A purple finger indicates that a dose has been received, so those who have
not been given a dose that day are recognisable by the lack of a ‘purple pinkie’. Also, there is no possibility of a child ‘going round again’ to get more than one dose. “Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative nearly 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to 26 confirmed so far in 2016. Ryan Allison, of Horsham District Council Parks and Countryside Services said: “We had a brilliant turn out on the day, with many of our regular volunteer members and a few people who had popped out of local offices to help, 27 in all. “It’s always nice to get a group of people outside working to a common purpose and having a chat with people you wouldn’t otherwise talk to. A bit of team spirit, friendly competition and knowing it was for a good cause meant we rattled through this job.” Horsham Green Gym meets at various locations on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10.0 am and 1.0 pm. Snowflake appeal melting hearts Farewell Freddie as band Supporter Old Sweet Shoppe
Horsham businesses are supporting a charity appeal that aims to create a brighter future for local children facing hardship or tragedy at the start of their lives. Home-Start CHAMS, whose area includes Horsham, supports young children and their families who are struggling with issues such as poverty, mental health
problems, or domestic abuse. The Snowflake Appeal will raise much needed funds to make sure it can help vulnerable children in our area who need help in the future. Jacquie Thomas, Fundraising Manager at the charity explained, “Our support for vulnerable children and their families helps to get them
through tough times or cope with problems they’re experiencing. We help hundreds of vulnerable children each year, but there are lots more who we have to turn away because of lack of funds.” Businesses in the town are involved in different ways; raising money for the Appeal by offering their customers charity Christmas cards or Snowflake pin badges, and local insurer More Than is sponsoring the ‘Strictly Snowflake’ dance evening being held later this month as one of the Appeal fundraising events and the Olde Sweeet Shoppe in West Street Horsham is backing it. Jacquie said: “Our Snowflake Appeal aims to raise £5,000 in the run up to the New Year. “That’s a big target for us, so we’re really pleased to have local businesses involved who can spread the word and help us reach our goal. Now we’re asking other organisations and individuals in the local community to join in too and help give young children the best possible start in life.” If you would like get involved in the Snowflake Appeal to help vulnerable local children, find out more at www.homestartchams.org.uk/snowflake , or phone Home-Start CHAMS on 01293 416327
Young artists shine in Billifest
Ten talented young artists from Billingshurst Primary School won prizes in this year’s BilliFest Family Fun Day Christmas Fayre Poster Competition. The standard was so high that the judges made nine awards in addition to the winner. John Griffin, vice chair of the Billingshurst Community Partnership, organizer of BilliFest, said: “The poster entries from our local children were really outstanding so we announced three runners up, plus six special award winners. Each child won a prize from the Partnership with the top four receiving gift tokens”. The annual fayre takes place
in the heart of Billingshurst on December 3 from 10am to 3pm. The winning illustration is featured on the BilliFest poster and the front of the event programme. The entries were judged by local artist and potter Terry Griffin and all the works will be on display at BilliFest. More than 2,000 flyers will be delivered and handed out in the village before then, and posters will be put in shop windows. It is the community’s major winter event and attracts more than 1,500 people. There will be lots to do at BilliFest. In the Find the Names of the
Gnomes Competition, children have to find 25 gnomes in Billingshurst shop windows from December 3-16 and write the names on an entry available from December 3 at The library and at Santa’s Grotto on the day. Prizes include family tickets for ‘Aladdin’ at The Capitol in Horsham, and for ‘Adventures of Peter Pan’ at The Pavilion Theatre, Worthing. There is also a family day ticket to Drucilla Zoo Park. Mr Griffin said: “The entertainment will be nonstop and Radio Weald, which is run by Weald School students, will again be handling our music and public address. Entertainment includes George on Sax, Lifestyle Fitness ‘join in’ sessions, the Billingshurst Choral Society, the Billingshurst Ukulele Band, Cotillion Sussex folk group, Horsham Boom Tribe Samba Band, Horsham Magog Dancers, Stephen Foster a David Bowie tribute, Rob Nichols swings, and Punch and Judy. Santa’s grotto will be located in Henry Adams’ historic High Street office. And don’t forget that the BilliFest Santa’s grotto is always free, and every visiting child receives a gift from Santa Claus. Pictured are John Griffin, vice chair of Billingshurst Community Partnership, organizer of BilliFest, with the ten brilliant young BilliFest Poster Competition artists from Billingshurst Primary School. They all won a prize.
plays Lord Mayor’s Show
For one pupil it was an extra special occasion as the Christ’s Hospital Band made its 35th appearance at the Lord Mayor’s Show in London. Band Captain Freddie Norris was making his final appearance. In pouring rain the band’s signature piece ’Sussex by the Sea’ was captured by the BBC during their live coverage of the show. Freddie said: “This was my fourth Lord Mayor’s Show in the CH Band and I still felt as

excited as I did the first time. This year was very special to me as not only is it my last year in the School band, I also have the added privilege of leading it as Captain. I felt so honoured when I found out that I was going to be Band Captain and it fills me with pride every time we march out, whether it is a special event like the Lord Mayor’s Show or just the everyday tradition of band parade at Christ’s Hospital.”

Thank you Horsham, as fallen are remembered Armistice Day
Remembrance Day
Horsham did the town proud as the victims of war were remembered in two services. There was good support from the public at the Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday ceremonies at the Carfax, and worshippers also paid their respects at St Marys Church. There were similar ceremonies across the district, where people of all generations paid tribute to servicemen and women, including many youth organisations.
Local dignitaries and organisations joined veterans in laying wreaths, and local school children paid their own tribute with crosses at the memorial. District Post managing director Davey Pearson said: “As usual the people of Horsham and other communities did those who served us so well in the past proud with their support for the ceremonies. The Post pictures just a few of the scenes of both services.

Police tax rise consultation goes live Residents of Horsham district and the rest of Sussex can now take part in a survey to see if they want to pay about £5 a year extra to provide more police officers. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne’s consultation for the Sussex Police Precept 2017/2018 proposes to increase the police element of council tax rise by about £5 per household to fund over 100 new police officers and specialist staff. The web address for comments is https://www.sussex-pcc.gov.uk/ priorities/budget/ Mrs Bourne said: “We need the right people, with the right skills in the right place to protect you and fight crime. “That’s why I want to invest in 100 new officers and staff in spe-
cialist teams to strengthen local policing and keep our communities safe.” “I am responsible for setting
I am responsible for setting the policing element of council tax in Sussex the policing element of council tax in Sussex. I would like to ask households if they would be prepared to pay – on average - an additional £5.00 which would create an extra £3m for policing each year. When that is added to the
£2m savings already identified, it allows Sussex Police to invest in over 100 police officers and specialist staff.” The four areas of extra staff include community Priority Crime Teams to investigate local crime problems, dismantle organised gangs and remove repeat offenders and provide a reassuring community presence. Expert Youth Teams target and support those younger people most at risk of committing crimes or becoming a victim of crime. Specialist Firearms Officers deal with counter terrorism deterrence and response. Public Protection Investigators provide appropriate response and more capacity to deal with the increased reports of sexual offences and child protection cases.

Katy Bourne
Mrs Bourne said: “Sussex Police is modernising its services to meet the local policing and security needs of the 21st century. This new way of working has been acknowledged as ambitious and positive by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary. “ “Whilst that transformation is under way across all areas of policing and will take time, I want to make sure Sussex residents can see local policing being strengthened now.” The consultation will include public engagements across Sussex and closes in January. Mrs Bourne will then present her recommendations on whether to propose a rise in the precept to the Police and Crime Panel in January.

With local people
Up at 5am and in class at 5.30 unsupervised. That tough daily regime of Ugandan pupils was an education for a group of Year 11 Weald School students who visited Namilyango College just outside Kampala in Uganda. The inaugural trip involving students followed visits of staff from both schools in the last four years as a result of a twinning programme from the London 2012 Olympics called International Inspirations. The aim of the trip was to allow students to gain an insight into the lives of young Ugandans. Some of the week was spent at school in lessons, but also
Santa’s Grotto at Horsham Fantasia
involved visits to local primary schools, working as sports leaders and working with ‘Hands For Hope’, a charity, in the Namuwongu slums. The students also had the opportunity to visit local sights. Student Hannah Evans, said: “It was an incredible experience. We really got an insight into life for a young Ugandan. Some secondary schools are boarding, as was Namilyango. Students got up at 5.00 am and were in class by 5.30 am working unsupervised. Some of the classes were as big as 80 students. We couldn’t believe how long and hard they worked. In the evening they were in classrooms unsupervised from 7.30 to
10.00 pm doing homework”. Another student, TomWeller, said: “In the evenings we had the opportunity to give talks to various classes and students so that Ugandans got an understanding of what life was like for us as English students. I also got the opportunity to play rugby on a number of occasions with the Ugandans who were really good. One of the highlights was visiting the charity “Hands for Hope” in Kampala which works with the most deprived children in one of the slums there. It made a huge impact on all of us”.The Weald is hoping to host a return trip from the Ugandan school in 2017.

by using a ‘walk-through’ facility, or by using the stunning dollshouse view that allows viewers to ‘parachute’ into a specific gallery and with amazing clarity, gaze into the cases’ contents - or even read the Southdown bus timetable that is on the wall! This technological breakthrough is a great boon for those who cannot physically visit the museum or for those unable to climb the 18th century wooden staircase, whilst providing a torrent of images to whet the appetite of any visitor. As well being a superlative technological advance for those with mobility issues, this technology is an amazing promotional tool. For over a century the world’s tourist spots have been photographed to encourage the visitor to ‘see the image’, now go and see the real thing! From the Sistine Chapel to the Great Pyramids of Egypt, people have been excited by what they have seen in the book, or on film, and go to experience it in the real world: the image inspires, excites and stimulates. Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are delighted that Take One Productions has produced this incredible 3D Virtual Tour for the museum and know that online visitors will be amazed by the building described as ‘like a Tardis’, just as its 90,000 visitors love exploring its many amazing spaces in person every year. Horsham youngsters enjoy benefit of donation Mild winter helps this time around Last year’s mild winter made lighter work when salt bins around the county were topped up for the coming season. The Henfield-based Sussex Wildlife Trust says a generous donation has helped it develop its work with youngsters in Horsham and wider afield. It received £3,000 from Southern Co-operative’s ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ campaign, and used the money to improve the Nature Tots programme of muddy fun for under-fives taking places at six different places in Sussex. Its Youth Ranger groups have given volunteers aged 16-25 years the opportunity to learn new skills and enhance their career prospects. At Nature Tots the charity has bought kettles for the campfire, buckets and trowels for the mud café, and bowsaws for making wooden medallions and miniature tractor wheels. It said: “Having extra equipment means the Tots don’t need to queue for their turn; and we all
know how patient a three-year old can be when waiting to get their hands on something new and exciting. “Our new groups in Horsham and and Horsham have had extra tools and equipment to help them get off the ground, and we’ve been able to splash out on healthy fruit kebab snacks, which have gone down well with the Tots and their parents. “ Youth Rangers groups in Crawley and Brighton have been busy working to improve local green spaces for wildlife including hedge planting and creating butterfly banks planted with nectar-rich native wild flowers. At Tilgate Park, Crawley, they have built a hibernaculum for slow worms and grass snakes, providing a safe haven to spend the winter in. The Brighton group has held a beach clean and made a rain garden in nearby Ports-
lade to help reduce flooding by holding back storm water while providing a valuable habitat for wildlife. They have also encouraged local children to take part in a guided bat walk. Thanks to the funding, they have been able to buy new bowsaw blades, loppers, and spades to carry out their work. The charity’s My Wild Neighbourhood campaign is supported by proceeds from the 5p carrier bag levy collected by the Southern Co-operative and distributed to Sussex Wildlife Trust and other Wildlife Trusts in the South East. Two activities are pictured.

year’s winter was so mild. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “Parishes have been preparing for winter since April. “They have been checking salt levels in their bins and keeping track of how much they have got for their communities this winter. “We are just topping up to make sure they have enough salt.”

Gems who keep Duke’s award running celebrated Volunteers from Horsham district were among more than 100 whose work was celebrated at a special event to mark the Diamond Anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Volunteers came from 26 of the West Sussex Duke of Edinburgh Award centres to share memories from the past six decades and were awarded a special commemorative certificate by Mark Spofforth, The High Sheriff of West Sussex. There was also archive footage from 1957 at the volunteer event which was hosted by Patrick Burgess OBE, Deputy Lieutenant and Chairman of the West Sussex County Committee for the award, at Brinsbury College. The award programme is designed to take young people through a challenging and rewarding programme of personal development with three levels of bronze,

silver and gold. One of the speakers was a former volunteer Nikki Hamilton-Street, who met her husband and fellow volunteer on an expedition. Nikki, who also works for the West Sussex County Council’s Young People’s Service and took part in a Round Britain walk for the award’s 30th anniversary, said: “It has played a large role in my life and so many others. The programme wouldn’t run without the volunteers – particularly in West Sussex. “People come from a diverse background to volunteer so you get that real eclectic mix of experience which they bring together to share with young people. They are not there just teaching expedition skills. They are there sharing their life experiences.” Supported by the County Council’s Young People’s Service, 58
centres are delivering the award in West Sussex to 9,571 participants. These are from schools, colleges, special schools, Open Award Centres and independent organisations. Mr Geoff Hurst, Operations Manager for South East Region of the award spoke about the value of the award for employability: “A number of employers will purposely look for DofE on CVs and guarantee interviews to candidates with this experience. Others are using the DofE framework for apprenticeships. So despite being 60, DofE is a still a very relevant experience.” To find out more about taking part in West Sussex, email d.of.e.award.youth@westsussex. gov.uk, or contact a school, college, youth group or one of the five Open Centres in the county.

The three directors of Horsham Coworking are Matt Ide, Roger Johnson and Clive Walker and they run their own businesses from the Carfax office. Also, business people visiting Horsham are finding it useful to come in to use our office after they’ve finished a meeting, and we’ve got a conference room here, too.” Clive, formerly a scientist with Novartis and now a freelance designer and developer of websites for small businesses adds: “We previously worked from different offices in the town but its great to have our own base now in such a fantastic location. We’ve got a really bright
and airy office - it’s a good meeting place and members can even make themselves a lunch in our kitchen! Our members include an interesting variety of businesses and everybody is happy to share their experience, so it’s a very positive atmosphere here and we thank Britweb, Horsham District Council, Hack Horsham and Visit Horsham for their help and support in getting us launched.” What do the members think about Horsham Coworking? Matt Taylor, a self- employed Software Engineer and IT Consultant told us: “Like so many local commuters, I’ve been suffering with the railway strikes so I’m really pleased to be able to improve the quality of my family life by operating from Horsham Coworking’s office. I’ve got two young children so it can be a bit disruptive working from home. Winning Sussex juice company now have ‘Pear’ of top awards!
After its victory in last year’s category for Fruit Juices & Smoothies, Mid-Sussex’s family-run ‘Wobblegate Juices’ has again been victorious, at the national Quality Food Awards, beating major household names, Asda and Marks & Spencer. Wobblegate’s 2015 winner was Cox & Bramley Apple Juice. This year the winning product was their delicious Apple & Pear Juice, proving that Wobblegate, based at their family fruit farm, near Haywards Heath, and committed to both artisan values and an entrepreneurial approach, can compete consistently at the highest level.

32-year-old Tom Stephens, founder and managing director of Wobblegate, is delighted with the award and that consumers and experts are choosing the products of a smaller, family-run business: “It’s a really incredible feeling. We still hadn’t quite gotten over winning at the awards last year and to win again in 2016 is a phenomenal achievement for all of us here at Wobblegate. “Being short-listed was a testament to the quality of drinks we make, but winning this category over the level of competition we had, really gives us a major boost, puts us firmly in line with our growth strategy and helps us
move further into the public eye on a national level.” 28-year-old Chris Blin-Stoyle, brother-in-law of Tom and Director at Wobblegate, commented on the importance for family-run business’ to receive such recognition: “This award is hugely important for us. Not only does it show the quality of the juices we make and will continue to make, but from a brand association perspective, it’s fantastic for us to win in such a tough category that included such renowned brands. “Sussex is a hub for amazing food & drink. To have a Sussex business like us win this level of award, has a direct, positive impact for all Sussex food & drink businesses, by helping to further increase the already magnificent reputation of Sussex food & drink as a whole.” From small beginnings (7 years ago) on the Stephens family’s fruit farm, Wobblegate has built a high-profile national clientèle – including historic Royal Palaces, such as Hampton Court and Kensington Palace, Kew Gardens, the National Gallery and the Palace of Holyrood House – and has won over 20 awards, including Sussex Drinks Producer of the Year, Business Matters Green Company Award, and, of course, the 2015 and now 2016 national Quality Food Award. Wobblegate has recently hit the heights by becoming a supplier to the British Airways i360, the observation tower that opened in Brighton in August: its juices can now be enjoyed at an elevation of over 160 metres, along with a magnificent view of the East Sussex coastline.
Innovation sees sighted and non-sighted sharing the musical experience An exciting innovation backed by local music and arts charity, the Blue Flash Music Trust, is currently receiving growing praise, from musicians and teachers alike, following its launch at the Horsham Festival in July. Though still a work in progress, the Tablet Ocarina Project shows excellent promise for a social enterprise, supplying a broad scope of technological offerings which disabled and able-bodied musicians can share together. The story began when treasurer of the Trust, Robert Mayfield, met eight-yearold James at a party in 1994. James was blind and Robert gave him an ocarina, and has continued to teach James since then. In summer 2015, Robert discovered that the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) had published a Braille Book of ocarina music. The Trust bought the book
for James but realised that sighted people, particularly teachers, were unable to read the music, as it was “like looking at a landscape covered with snow!” Inspiration came at a HackHorsham display in Horsham’s Swan Walk last November, where pieces of fruit produced music, via conductivity. After building a prototype of cardboard and metal brads, James was able to recognise ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ via touch, Robert attended another HackHorsham event to team up with a talented and experienced ‘tech builder’, Jonathan Tyler-Moore, and take things further with the Raspberry Pi. The build was a success and James and Robert now have the technology that allows them to learn music together, as well as the basis to develop the vision further.
Grants available for firms in district
Firms in Horsham District can get help from an £83,000 grant “pot” set up by West Sussex County Council. The county’s economic development team has teamed up with other local authority colleagues across West Sussex to secure £500,000 to set up a grant pot for small businesses. The grant scheme is called the Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Platform and Horsham district’s share of this pot is £83,000. It is aimed at setting up a new business, growing existing small firms,, or taking on an apprentice. For small business grants, people
can apply for up to £2,000 which they will need to match with additional funds. For example, if you want to buy some equipment that costs £1,500, you can apply for £750 from the grant fund, and source the additional £750 needed from your own money, a bank loan etc.If you are a business that wants to take on an apprentice, you can apply for up to £1,500 to match the funding that the Government makes available so that there will be a much reduced cost to your business for taking on an apprentice. The funding is available from December until September 2017 and will be
decided by a grantsappraisal team at the Horsham District Council. Once all the funds have been allocated, applicationswill no longer be accepted. Cllr Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for Local Economy said: “This is a great opportunity for people who have been thinking about starting or growing a small business or taking on an apprentice, but have been worried about securing the funding. “We are hoping that businesses will take advantage of this grant scheme in order to make that important small investment in equipment or people which until now they have not been able to fund.” For more information or to apply for a LEAP grant visit the Council’s website: https://www. horsham.gov.uk/businesspages/ Business-Development/businesssupport-andopportunities/information-forbusinesses Companies must be registered with Companies House, must have less than 20 employees and must be based in the Horsham District. Funding can be used for equipment, marketing, website development etc, but not for salaries, rent or overheads.

Swinging start for Annie at The Capitol maY PEARSON
Entertainment Editor
The sell-out opening night of HAODS’ latest production, Annie, ran seemlessly yesterday at The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Set in 1930s New York, at the height of The Great Depression, the show tells the story of Annie, an orphan whose quest, to find her parents, delivers her into the world of billionaire tycoon, Oliver Warbucks. The contrast between the squalor of Annie’s home and the splendour of the Warbucks’
empire is stark, but necessary, to add to the fairytale like theme of this much loved classic tale. Last night’s audience was treated to a show that fully deserved the standing ovation it recieved. The entire HAODS team will, no doubt, be patting themselves on the back for a job well done. The supporting cast was amazing. In true HAODS style, every actor played their part, to perfection, from the endearingly feisty orphans to the staff in The White House - even the very real (and impressively well behaved) ‘Sandy’ the dog! It’s impossible to fault the costumes and set designs, music, lighting, direction,
acting and singing - in particular, Miss Hannigan’s sizzling performance of ‘Little Girls’ and Annie’s beautifully sweet delivery of ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘Maybe’, which had many audience members choking back tears. Photo 1 - Miss Hannigan (Candie Johnson) and Orphans. Photo 2 - Last night’s orphans: Harriet Douglas (Annie), Catalina Pearson (Molly), Anya Bidmead (Pepper), Rebecca Maynard (Duffy), Izabella Whitmore (July), Milly Davis (Tessie), Matilda Whitmore (Kate), also Amelia Dougas, Ameila Edson, Georgie Lunniss, Leah Rogers, Megan Wilson, Orla Edwards and Zoe Nicholson

Boobs and Brass date in Horsham A band called Boobs and Brass will have a serious mission behind the fun when it plays in Horsham. Led by Horsham resident Gill English, the 85-member allwomen brass band, one of three with the same name across the UK, will be raising money for the Breast Cancer Now charity. Putting aside their tongue-incheek name, the band is promising some seriously good music at the Drill Hall in Denne Road on November 26 from 7.30 pm for a cause dear to the hearts of many people. Already more than £250,000 has been raised for the charity in total nationally through the efforts of the musicians in the three bands in playing gigs. The Horsham group has raised about £5,000 from its concerts since it was formed in 2014 to serve the southern area. It rehearses at the Edwin Hall in Horsham once a month. Dennis Wilby will conduct the band for the concert. The programme includes a mix of traditional hymns, a Remembrance theme called In Flanders Fields, and popular music. Tickets are £10 each from Gill English at gillenglish@gmail.com or phone 01403 754663.The original Boobs and Brass Band was formed in 2006, and two others were later formed, including the Horsham group.

PETs POST Sponsored by
Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about how to care for your horse. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
What to do if you find a stray cat Many of the cats that are brought into our partnership veterinary practice, Arthur Lodge in Horsham, are healthy cats that have taken a liking to hanging around in someone’s garden or neighbourhood. Maybe you or a neighbour has taken to leaving a titbit out for them or perhaps you have a cat yourself that the stray cat is particularly interested in. Somewhere there is likely to be an owner who is wondering where their cat is, as healthy stray cats tend to be much loved pets who enjoy going for a stroll in the neighbourhood. If you are concerned about a
stray cat, or the cat is causing a nuisance, then the best thing to do is to try to locate the owner. If you can get close enough to the cat, then the most effective method is to put a paper collar on the cat that asks the owner to contact you; you can download a template paper collar by going to www.rspca.org.uk and searching for ‘stray cat.’ If the cat is shy of you, then you could enquire with neighbours or put posters up in your local area appealing for the owner to get in touch. The Horsham Facebook page is another good way of trying to locate an owner. If this fails then your next op-
tion is to take the cat to a veterinary practice to be scanned for a microchip. Sadly many people still do not have their cats microchipped but it’s still worth a try. If the cat isn’t microchipped and the vet thinks the cat is healthy, then they are likely to advise that the cat is put back where you found them so that they can find their way home. The vet may also recommend that the cat is put on a reunification website, like Petslocated.com Taking a healthy stray cat into RSPCA care is an absolute last resort, as most of these cats have owners and the limited space the RSPCA has needs to be prioritised
Dogs like Caspar can be life savers Dog at work
for sick and injured cats who are more likely to not have an owner. The RSPCA Sussex North branch cattery in Roffey, which takes cats in from Haywards Heath, Crawley and Horsham, only has four cat pens so it’s important that these are utilised for the most needy of cats. Of course, if you find a sick or injured cat then we recommend you take the cat to a veterinary practice immediately. The RSPCA inspectors, who are employed by the national RSPCA and not the local branch, cover the whole of East and West Sussex and there
may only be one or two inspectors on duty at any one time. With so many sick and injured animals of all species for them to prioritise, it can be very difficult for them to get to you whilst the cat is still in the area, so it really is quicker if you can assist the animal by getting them to a vets quickly. If you think your cat could have been taken to a vet as a stray, then our advice is to contact veterinary practices in your area and to check on Petslocated.com The RSPCA records all stray animals coming into their care on Petslocated.
Dog lovers wanted: Enjoy the company of a canine guest!
Open your home to a friendly dog for his holiday. Whilst owners are away dogs get the love, exercise and companionship of your loving home. Caspar the “Medical Detection” dog is one of the star turns at a fund-raising event in Horsham. On November 26 local supporters of Medical Detection Dogs will give a presentation at Sedgwick Park House. There will be coffee, cake and crafts for sale. Medical assistance dog Caspar and his owner Sue Surbey will visit to talk about their relationship. All money raised will go to Medical Detection Dogs to support their life-saving work. Medical Detection Dogs is a charity that trains dogs to help people with life- threatening con-
ditions, thereby improving their quality of life, even giving their independence back. With their incredible sense of smell Medical Alert dogs support individuals with illnesses like severe forms of diabetes, warning them of life-threatening episodes and thereby preventing medical emergencies. The dogs save lives on a daily basis. The charity also train dogs to help scientists identify the odour of cancer; they have trained dogs to identify bladder cancer and are now working on prostate and breast cancer studies. In cooperation with linked universities they
hope to identify the volatiles that the dogs recognise with a view to develop an ‘electronic nose’; a simple, reliable and non-invasive early screening method for cancer. Please visit www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk for lots more information. While the internet is informative, meeting such a working dog and owner is even more exciting. There will also be presentation on the extraordinary work that Medical Detection Dogs do. The event runs from 10am to 3pm and there is free entry and parking.

Collision forces Palmer out of Brazilian Grand Prix Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor Raced in atrociously wet conditions the Brazilian Grand Prix proved a disappointment for Jolyon Palmer as he was forced into a retirement after colliding with Russian driver Daniil Kvyat’s Team Toro Rosso car on lap 20. Jolyon started the race in P16 on new wet tyres before stopping on lap 9 for a new set of intermediate tyres and again on lap 17 for a new set of wet tyres. Palmer’s
Renault Sport Formula One team mate Kevin Magnussen made up some ground after starting in P18 he finished the race in fourteenth place. A naturally disappointed Palmer said, “The conditions this afternoon were very difficult and unfortunately we had to retire following contact with Kvyat. In the end the visibility was so bad that I couldn’t even see past my steering wheel. Kvyat in front of me was slower and I hit him. It was really tricky.”
Jolyon Palmer in the wet of Brazil
Palmer was buoyed before the race with the announcement that Renault Sport Formula One Team will retain him for the 2017 season where he will team up with German driver Nico Hülkenberg who has joined Renault from the Sahara Force India Formula 1 to complete the team’s 2017 race driver line-up. A delighted Palmer said “I’m over the moon to be racing with Renault Sport Formula One Team for a second season and I can’t wait to reward the team’s faith in me on track.”

Atlantis now are top of Division One and look forward to their final event on December 10. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – A difficult 20 minutes before half time turned a promising start into a 0-3 deficit as Montpellier’s Spanish player took control. The second half was dominated by Sparrows but as they pushed to get back into the game a quick break enabled the away team to score a 4th and seal the win. Chichester City Youth U18 1 – 7 Roffey U18 Roffey went joint top of the table with a comfortable win against their bottom-of-the league opponents. Roffey’s first half goals came from a George Chantrill free kick, and two Ben Gibbs corners that curled directly into the Chichester net. In less than three seasons Bronwen has risen from being the captain of the Horsham Sparrows U14 team that won the Sussex Girls Challenge Cup to senior international football. Horsham’s goal drought continues South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 - 4 London Wayfarers Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham attacked strongly but were unable to recover from two early London Wayfarers’ goals and remain tenth, one place ahead of Wayfarers. Horsham made the early running, firing wide from a short corner and then being denied because of indecision in front of goal. Then, Wayfarers, against the run of play, smashed a short into the top right of the goal. Disaster followed two minutes later when a penalty was awarded against Horsham for a backstick offence. The ball was totally miss-hit but rolled over the line with keeper Andy Isaacs going the other way. Suddenly, Horsham, with the second lowest goal conversion record in the league and clearly missing the pace and scoring ability of Jack Dean, had a mountain to climb. Chances came and went but Wayfarers were still two up at the break, before John Burroughs twice penetrated the Wayfarers’ defence amid strong

Horsham attacks, but to no avail, US international keeper Chris Rae starring. Then, Wayfarers’ pressure earned them four short corners, one of which was well executed, Alex Penny notching up his second outstanding conversion. Worse followed when a breakaway goal left Horsham four adrift, but they responded positively and Dom Male impressively reduced the deficit but, although the scoreline flattered Wayfarers, they were worthy winners, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “Their keeper was exceptional, but we’re simply not scoring enough goals. Despite their lowly position, Wayfarers are a tough experienced side and we showed that we’ve got much to learn.” Leaders Bromley & Beckenham – four points clear of London Edwardians - thrashed bottom club Guilford 6-1 last Saturday. Guildford are still awaiting their first point. With three straight defeats Horsham are looking to return to winning ways tomorrow (Saturday) when they visit Old Cranleighans, who are seventh but just one point ahead, having lost 4-2 to London Edwardians last Saturday.

Battling Horsham unable to convert chances in leaps and bounds and played really well, moving the ball from stick to stick nicely and getting into their circle at least 30 times but we just couldn’t convert.” Louisa Denman’s skilful pass was tapped in by Lauren Burroughs to reduce the deficit and although Suzy Clapp was back from injury Joy How was hit in the face and had to come off just before Wimbledon’s third goal. Horsham remain eighth ahead of Staines and beleaguered Woking, CJ adding: “Given the opportunities that we created I thought that we were the better side, but its points that count!” With just two matches left before the Christmas and New Year break in the ladies’ league fixture programme, tomorrow, Saturday, Horsham have a tough home game against runaway leaders Surbiton, the only unbeaten team in the league. Surbiton have conceded just four goals and their 24 goal tally is head and shoulders above their rivals.

Colts come out on top against Jersey Sussex RFU Youth League Colts Premier Horsham Colts 21 – 12 Jersey Colts Junior Rugby Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham got off to a slow start with a lack of competitiveness and some poor passing being punished when their strong opponents scored in the corner after 5 minutes. The early score jerked Horsham into life and they started to get their game together which culminated in a well worked try by the excellent James Purbrick; the try being converted by Joe Blake. Some poor Horsham defending allowed Jersey to run in a try from 60 yards that went unconverted before Max Patterson scored an individual try kicking forward a loose ball and colliding with the post pad as he dived over the try line while
being tackled by the Jersey defender. The try was again converted by Joe Blake which made the score 14-12 at half time. Early in the second half Jersey hit the cross bar from a penalty in front of the posts which if it had gone over could have changed the course of the well balanced contest. Alfie Burchfield, Ollie Lewis and Max Patterson were all involved in some superb Horsham offensive play without extending the lead but the crucial next try came the way of Horsham through some excellent play. Charlie Best collected a cross field kick by Joe Blake which stretched Jerseys defence and Charlie ran in from 22 yards to score a superb try, converted once again by Joe Blake for 21-12. Jersey put in a frantic attempt to close the gap in the score as the clock ticked away but Horsham held on for a fine victory.

Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 4 – 0 Chatham Town Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham’s good run of league form continued with a commanding win over third bottom Chatham Town with the only sour point being the injuries picked up by the influential pair of Tony Nwachukwu and Alex Duncan. In awful wet and windy conditions the hardy bunch of Hornets followers saw their side breeze past a poor looking Chatham side to consolidate their mid table position and to look a reasonably safe bet to retain Ryman League status. In the absence of injured striker Terry Dodd young Ollie Gill
Manager Di Paola & assistant Westwood oversee the win started up front and played well, especially in the first 45 minutes, setting Horsham on their way with the opening goal. Gill, and the lively Liam MacDevitt, caused problems in the visitors defence from the start and even when Nwachukwu had to depart with what appeared to be a hamstring injury the pair looked a constant threat. After a number of efforts on Town ‘keeper James Dunn’s goal the breakthrough finally came with a half hour played; good work from Lewis Hyde set up Gill who showed good ball control before planting the ball past Dunn high into the net. Adam Yussuf gave the Hornets a scare when he hit a post on a rare foray into Horsham territory but minutes later MacDevitt gave his side a two goal lead when he pounced onto a poor back pass and fired his shot into the net.
Perhaps the goal just before the break led to a bit of Horsham complacency as they were nearly punished early on when Hyde’s poor clearance allowed Yusuff a shot at goal that Josh Pelling saved. A collision with the advertising boards saw the end of Duncan’s match as her suffered a deep cut to the leg to be replaced by Charlie Farmer. With 15 minutes remaining any slim chance the visitors had of getting something from the match was snubbed out when Tom Lawley’s free-kick found Branford whose cross was smashed into the net by Hyde for his debut goal for Horsham. The excellent MacDevitt played a major part in the final goal when his control and excellent cross was met by substitute Darren Boswell whose angled shot found the far corner of Dunn’s goal.

Emma Claydon, Gatwick Flyers were in the medals
Emily Sturt and Sophie Pearce all competing for the first time - took team silver in the women’s under 13 I grade event. Gatwick Flyers’ Head Coach, Jacqui Gevaux, praised their performances saying, “Most of our gymnasts were experiencing their first taste of competition today and they should be very proud of their performances and the part they played in representing the club.”

YM rout sets up Buckland against Buckland
YM hit 7 goals against Lancing F.A. Vase 2nd Round Lancing 1 – 7 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Having lost in the league on Lancing’s 3G surface in early September big odds would have been available to anyone who had predicted the final score in this FA Vase second round tie.
Seven separate goal scorers found the net at regular intervals for YM in this wet and windy rout that has set up a third round home tie against manager Peter Buckland’s namesakes, Buckland Athletic FC, who will make the long trip up to Horsham from Newton Abbot in Devon on Saturday December 3. The match was just 4 minutes old when Matt Crane powerfully
headed a corner into the home goal to set YM on their way. With the play all one way YM continued to pound the Lancing goal and goal number two came in the 25th minute when Matt Simpson latched onto a loose ball to score. Five minutes later and it was three as Ashley Dugdale buried Dean Carden’s cross for a comfortable half time lead. Four goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second 45 blew away Lancing and ended any hope of a revival as Sam Schaaf, Max Howell, Nick Sullivan and Dave Brown all found the back of net. With the game well and truly dead as a contest YM eased off which allowed a succession of long range efforts from the home side that finally resulted in a scrambled consolation goal for Lancing’s Nana Baah. A delighted YM manager Peter Buckland said, “It’s hard to pick a man of the match as there were so many great performances in every area of the pitch but Ash Dugdale was immense as part of an excellent midfield engine room.”
Injury hit Hornets blown away by leaders Wanderers Photos by John Lines
Lively Liam MacDevitt’s efforts failed to lift Horsham
Injury hit Horsham did not trouble leaders Dorking Ryman League Division One South Dorking Wanderers 7 - 1 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham have been scoring for fun of late, 13 goals coming from the last three matches, but that all came to halt on Tuesday as they suffered a bad night at league leaders Dorking Wanderers. Wanderers, even at this early stage, are looking the likely champions, although Tooting & Mitcham are hanging on 6 points behind them, so it was no surprise that the Hornets failed to take anything from the game. The size of the defeat however would have been something manager Dom Di Paola would have been keen to avoid but given Wanderers form
this season and Horsham’s growing injury list, a thrashing was always going to be a possibility. The manager was without the services of Tony Nwachukwu, Alex Duncan, Adam Hunt, Mark Knee and Terry Dodd; all missing through injury with Nwachukwu likely to be out for a lengthy spell. Horsham managed to keep their hosts at bay for nearly 25 minutes but Ben Dyett gave Wanderers the lead with a close range effort and the home side then went on a goal scoring spree. 5 minutes later Matt Briggs made it 2-0 with an excellent solo effort. Then Horsham handed two goals to Wanderers the first from a needless penalty, put away by the prolific striker Tom Tolfrey and then minutes before the break when Ashley Jones was caught napping by James McShane who rounded Josh Pelling to score at ease.
Only 4 minutes had lapsed of the second half when James McShane tapped in number five. Then after a quite spell free of the ball hitting the net, Horsham broke away and pulled a goal back through George Branford. As if annoyed by conceding what was only ever going to be a consolation goal Wanderers scored immediately from the restart through Matt Price and went on to add number seven in the last minute from a Tolfrey header. With a difficult match on Saturday (November 19) away to Corinthian Casuals, Di Paola and his team will want to put this hammering out of their minds. However the Horsham injury list is not likely to show any major improvement before the weekend so another very difficult 90 minutes might be facing the Hornets this weekend.

Heath bow out of Senior Cup in extra time SCFA Senior Cup – Round 2 Broadbridge Heath 0 – 1 Lewes Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Broadbridge Heath suffered a heart breaking extra time home defeat in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday night when their visitors Lewes grabbed the very late winner. Lewes have been on a tremendous run of league form but
despite them coming into the match as favourites Heath battled throughout, keeper Chester in particular pulled off a number of quality saves, and the Heath front line came close to scoring on a number of occasions. The match was decided in extra time when Ronnie Conlon’s effort took a wicked deflection and rolled into the net. Heath return to league action Tomorrow (November 19) with a trip down to Worthing United
Disappointed Boro exit cup in second round RFU Senior Vase - Round 2 Pulborough 14 - 22 Battersea Ironsides Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough have won all eight of their league games and had high hopes of a good cup run, but it was not to be. Battersea Ironsides, based in Earlsfield, south west London, are in an equivalent league to Boro but are thought to be Britain’s biggest junior rugby club with a reputation for producing top players, including Harlequin props Kyle Sinkler – in England colours when they beat South Africa – and Darryl Marfo. Although it was a close game, full back Frazer Oliphant-Hope told the District Post: “They were strong and brought the game to us and seemed to want it more than we did. We had wingers
missing and some colts playing but we were still good enough to win – we’ve got some great young players coming through. We’re disappointed with the result – we had designs on the silverware but we had to make so many tackles and unfortunately we missed a few of them and then we lost our captain, Simon (Burfiend), when he had to go off injured.” Boro’s two tries came from their highly promising 17 year olds – Henry Lee and Owain McLoughlin, both converted by Frazer, but two penalties went begging as Battersea Ironsides pushed through to the next round. On Saturday (tomorrow) table topping Pulborough return to league action with a challenging home game against current runners up Thanet Wanderers, who have won six of their eight games and have 32 points, six behind Boro.
