Summer decision in war of words over incinerator phil dennett News Editor
Opponents and supporters of a waste incinerator scheme in the north of Horsham will have their war of words decided by councillors in the summer or perhaps even later. A spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council told the Post: “It is anticipated that the planning application will go to Planning Committee in the summer at the earliest. The exact date will be determined in due course. “To date we have received around 1,300 representations from third parties and statutory consultees. They are currently being analysed to determine the number and reasons set out for and against the proposal.” The No Incinerator 4 Horsham group has handed a petition opposing the application to West Sussex County Council in Chichester on the final day for submission of comments.
The reasons for objection include non-compliance with West Sussex County Council’s Waste Local Plan, visual impact of the development day and night being above the natural tree canopy, noise intrusion and night light pollution, and the environmental arguments. Objections have been has been sent collectively from Rusper, Warnham, Colgate and Capel Parish Councils, and also Forest Neighbourhood Councils. Leigh Parish Council has also added its name to the same comments. Their main reasons are it does not comply with the West Sussex County Council Waste Local Plan, it would have a huge negative visual impact in a rural area, noise intrusion, the effect of emissions and air pollution on residents and wildlife and increased Heavy Goods Vehicle movements around the local, and often rural, roads. Applicant Britaniacrest Recycling says the new facility is urgently needed to dispose of waste left over that cannot be recycled. It says the industrial brownfield site is designated as suitable in the West Sussex Waste Local Plan,

the facility will be in an unobtrusive and appropriate setting. It says the scheme is a responsible answer to the waste problem and will be environmentally safe. The company says it has permission to process 230,000
number of vehicles. It said: “Evidence shows these plants work well, do not cause a problem and just become part of the landscape. We feel that what we are proposing is a sensible answer to the waste problem.”
