Horsham schools pick up awards at Rock Challenge phil dennett News Editor

Students from three Horsham schools collected a clutch of awards as they competed before 700 spectators in the Rock Challenge.

I thought it was totally electric. I’m proud to see that the young people have put so much hard work and thought into their performances for concept, drama, soundtrack, costuming character, visual enhancement, entertainment, lighting, strage crews, and video performance.

In a different session Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, portrayed the fight by women to achieve voting status.

Queen Elizabeth School won awards for choreography, concept, soundtrack, set design and

function, costuming character, enhancement , lighting, entertainment, stage crews, Spirit of Rock Challenge, and performers choice.

Tanbridge House School, performed a piece called “Wrong Will Be Right”. Tanbridge collected awards for student leadership, stage use, soundtrack, entertainment, lighting, stage crews and video performance.

The event at the Hawth, Crawley, was supported by the Pauline Quirke Academy, West Sussex County Council –Think Family, Sussex Police, Anti-Bullying Works, Ansvar Insurance, CEOP and YPO. Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Raj Sharma, first place prize presenter to Millais School said: “I thought it was totally electric. I’m proud to see that the young people have put so much hard work and thought into their performances.”

Leader of West Sussex County Council, Councillor Louise Goldsmith said: “It was a really inspiring evening to see the talent of the young children but also to see the thought they have put in. Some of them dealt with some really important issues and I think that it is amazing that they were aware of that and wanted to express that in the drama. Truly fantastic.”

A trip to see maths at the top level left girls inspired.

They hope that more students will help prompt a jump in the numbers of girls tackling the subject.

A group from Years 9-11 from Christ’s Hospital at Horsham visited the University of Oxford where the Mathematical Institute and Department of Statistics hosted ‘It All Adds up’ to inspire girls to continue to study Maths, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, known as STEM subjects, at a higher level.

Whilst the numbers of girls participating in Mathematics and

Further Mathematics in the UK has grown substantially in recent years, the proportion of A level Mathematics students that are girls is 39% and for A level Further Mathematics the figure is 28%.

Universities and employers are keen to recruit even more female students into STEM subjects and also to a wide range of other degree courses and careers requiring quantitative skills, such as Psychology, Social Sciences, Economics and Geography.

One of the pupils, Lottie Field, 15, who attended the conference, wrote an account of her day in Oxford and how it has strength-

ened her ambitions to continue Maths into A level. She hopes her experience will encourage other girls to look at Maths and STEM subjects when choosing their sixth form course.

Lottie said: “It gave us the opportunity not only to experience the atmosphere and environment at one of the top and most renowned universities in the world, but to meet women successfully working with Maths and on STEM subjects.”

The first was the Suffragette Movement. The second was the first World War. Our dance highlights these events, and also the continuing fight for equality for women.”

Date set for Horsham Post Office move

Workers aim to ease plight of homeless Staff at a building society in Horsham are raising money to ease the plight of homeless people.

Workers at Yorkshire Building Society are holding their first action fortnight from Monday, in support of its new three year charity partnership with End Youth Homelessness.

The charity brings together local charities as a national movement to end homelessness among 16-25 year-olds in the UK. Staff at Yorkshire Building Society branches aim to raise £750,000 over the course of the partnership to support over 700 homeless young people into their own rented homes.

An estimated 83,000 young people in the UK are homeless and, according to latest figures, 19 young people in Horsham received some homelessness support from their local authority in 2015/16.

Colleagues at the Yorkshire’s agency, at Carfax, will be raising funds for the charity by selling its trolley coin key rings and holding a “give our bear a home” competi-

Driver could help Horsham kidnap investigation A Good Samaritan might hold the key to a kidnap investigation.

Police are appealing for the mystery helper to come forward after assisting a woman in distress on Wednesday of last week in Horsham.

A 18-year-old woman was picked up about 7.30pm on Rushams Road after she got out of another car. The good Samaritan drove the woman to another location in Horsham and dropped her off.

Detective Sergeant Sian Harding said: “We believe the woman got out of another car and was kindly picked up in a car and we are keen to trace this driver as they may be able to help with our investigation. We believe the woman was with someone she knew before getting the lift. We have spoken to her and are working with her to establish what happened.

We have arrested one man and believe there is another man involved.”

A 36-year-old man from Crawley has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and has been bailed until April 5 while investigations continue. Police have not disclosed the gender of the driver who helped.

Residents at a care home in Horsham took part in spotting birds.

Pupils from Holbrook Primary School joined them in this year’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Big Garden Birdwatch.

Residents from Care UK’s Skylark House on St Marks Lane had a busy weekend observing the many feathered friends visiting the garden as they took part in the world’s largest wildlife survey.

Holbrook, residents created a number of tasty treats to attract birds to the care home’s garden for the birdwatch.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch encourages people throughout the UK to take a closer look at the nature on their doorsteps by counting the different birds, as well as recording any non-bird species such as badgers and hedgehogs, which visit their garden in any one hour.

Images released in bogus cop hunt Police have released an “efit” image of two men they would like to speak to in connection with a burglary in Steyning towards the end of January.

It was reported that two men called at an address in Penlands Vale at about 9pm on January 25 claiming to be police officers.

They presented an A4 sheet of paper which they said was a court order allowing them to search the house for drugs and money.

The victims were suspicious and said they would call 999 but the men said they would be handcuffed and arrested if they did.

While the couple sat in the lounge, the two men went upstairs and conducted an untidy search before leaving with a total

of about £1400 cash.

One of the suspects is described as white, 5’7” and of stocky build with short dark brown hair. The other is described as black, 5’8” and of skinny build with short black hair. He was wearing round glasses and a black jacket.

Detective Constable Dave Wadley said: “If you recognise either of these two faces then please get in touch. Any information about the burglary could prove really useful to the investigation.”

Drivers of heavy goods vehicles face a blitz against parking offroad.

West Sussex Highways has authorised a crackdown on them parking over verges and footways.

The County Council has advised district and borough councils to issue penalty notices to any HGV driver parked wholly or partly on a footway or verge. This is regardless of whether there are waiting restrictions on the road or not.

HGVs found to park on central reservations will also be affected.

The clampdown is for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes in weight only.

The council says that the change in policy does not include lighter vehicles.

County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “We have seen an increase in reports of HGVs parking on footways in recent months.

“This behaviour causes all sorts of problems for residents.

“It makes it more dangerous for motorists and pedestrians to see when they are on the roads.”

Mr Lanzer added: “HGVs will still be permitted to drop off and unload, but these measures will prevent long term parking on verges and pavements.”

Flower Fairies book

A fan of illustrator and verse writer Cecily Barker would like to see a blue plaque installed in her memory.

Cecily was born in Croydon and grew up to be a beautiful and talented young woman. She moved to Storrington when her parents died.

She began one of her most famous works of illustrated verses called Flower Fairies in Croydon and finished it in Storrington.

Multi-talented, she also illustrated her works, and became hugely popular. Born in June 1895 and never married, she lived in a maisonnete called St Andrews in

Students weave their way to finals Sporting a beanie

A team of would-be business tycoons from Horsham is heading for finals next month after impressing judges.

Farlington School Lower Sixth students answered the challenge to create a dynamic and successful business, developing and using practical business skills through the Young Enterprise Scheme. This year’s company, called ‘Woven’, sells stylish, quality knitwear accessories at affordable prices.

Sixth Formers Nikki Wong and Becky Farman travelled to Irwin Mitchell’s offices in Crawley to present their business plan and give an update on their progress at the Young

Enterprise Sussex Area interim evening.

The girls had to present an update on their business plan, including financial data, and outline their future plans in a five-minute pitch in front of five judges in a Dragons’ Den environment.

The school reports that, sitting in the top floor board room, Nikki and Becky spoke confidently, informing the judges that they had won the best trade stall award at a market in Horsham. They also reported on how well sales have gone to date, with a turnover just short of a thousand pounds.

In development are many new ideas for diversifying, whilst looking for opportunities to sell their popular and fashionable beanies; a Valentine’s beanie was one of the projects mentioned. Their press coverage evidence was also presented.

The girls are working towards the end of the company programme for the area finals in Burgess Hill in March, where they will have to present a final business report to the area judges.

Outdoor sleepers sought for charity Chance to be a councillor

Last year’s Sleep Easy Local heroes are sought to sleep out for charity YMCA Horsham is looking for them to take part in its fundraising sleepout titled Sleep Easy on March 24.

YMCA Horsham, part of YMCA DownsLink Group, is providing safe accommodation and opportunities for young people who have been made, or are at risk of becoming, homeless. Sleep Easy is a national YMCA winter sleepout that raises vital funds and awareness of youth homelessness.

Sleep Easy 2017 will take place at YMCA Horsham Football Club’s ground at Gorings Mead.

YMCA Horsham is asking local people to take part and give up their warm bed for one night under cardboard.

It said: “It won’t be warm or comfortable but Sleep Easy raises thousands of pounds for the work of the YMCA and this is an opportunity to do something remarkable for the local community.”

The charity says there are many young people who, for a range of reasons, find themselves with nowhere to call home. Last year across West Surrey, East and West Sussex YMCA DownsLink Group housed around 550 young people who would otherwise have

been homeless. The YMCA works hard to help these young people rebuild their lives, but funding is a constant challenge. The Sleep Easy event raises significant funds to help.

Judi Cox volunteers as a chaplain at YMCA Horsham Y Centre and slept out last year. She said after last year’s event: “It makes you appreciate your bed and home comforts. I will bring more people next year.” And the charity said: “Tthat is exactly what she is doing.

Residents who might be unhappy with their local councillor have an opportunity to replace them.

West Sussex County Council is hoping to attract more candidates for the May county elections by running a session “lifting the lid” on life as a county councillor with an information meeting.

The event for potential councillors takes place on February 27 from 5.30pm to 8.45pm at County Hall, Chichester.

Places for the event are limited so potential candidates are encouraged to register at http://beacouncillor.co.uk/westsussex.

The council says the event will give people thinking of standing in the elections on 4 May the chance to learn more about the County Council, take part in workshops, understand the election timetable and ask questions.

A new website has also been launched in collaboration with the Local Government Association’s ‘Be a Councillor’ campaign. The website allows people to take an eligibility quiz and watch a new video created with current West Sussex county councillors discussing their roles.

Pat Arculus, Chairman of West Sussex County Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people think-

ing of standing for election to find out more information about the county council, what the role involves and take part in workshops.

“You’ll also be able to watch the new video which includes ten of our current members, including myself, providing a great deal of insight into our responsibilities. I would urge anyone who is considering standing to take some time and watch it.”

To be eligible for the role residents must be a British or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union, at least 18 years old, registered to vote in the area or have lived, worked or owned property there for at least 12 months before an election.

Tim Rides in Memory of Rose Pupils take to the ice Keen rider Tim Mackhew will have extra motivation when mountain bikers take to the hills to raise money for terminally ill children.

They will take part in the Hit the Downs MTB on May 7 along the South Downs Way. It will challenge people of all cycling abilities, as they take to their saddles to raise money for Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire.

One of the first people to sign up for the event was 56 year-old Tim, who is cycling in memory of his mother, Rose, who lost her battle with cancer four years ago.

Tim is no novice when it comes to taking part in challenges, having done two triathlons and two 96km hikes, but Hit the Downs MTB will be his first off-road cycling event, and his first fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House.

Tim said: “I have recently returned from Australia, where I completed two 96km hikes to raise money for disadvantaged

children, and feel a real affinity towards causes that support young people. My mother raised me and my four brothers singlehandedly and had an amazing commitment to child welfare. I know that she’d be really proud that I’m fundraising for such a fantastic charity that does so much to help local children and their fami-

lies.”

So far Tim has raised over £1,600, smashing his original £200 target in just one week.

He is spreading the word to friends and family across the globe on social media and is now hoping to raise £2,000.

The event starts from Windlesham House School near Worthing, with either a 20 or 40 mile route covering climbs, descents

and the natural beauty of the South Downs.

Lucy Bone, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House said: “People have a variety of reasons for entering our events, and we feel honoured that Tim Mackew has chosen to fundraise for Chestnut Tree House in memory of his mother, Rose. On the ice

Pupils went ice skating as part of their new topic called Ice Worlds.

The junior pupils at The Towers Convent School at Upper Beeding began the day with the delivery of a strange parcel and a video letter. In the parcel they found some ice eggs and a message from the scien-

tist asking them to solve the mystery of the ice eggs. Soon afterwards pupils began to prepare for a possible expedition to Antarctica by learning the skills to walk safely in a blizzard. To practice and test their newly-acquired skills, they went ice skating to practise skating skills.

Duncan Goodhew said: “For the last 29 years it has been a real joy to see Swimathon develop and mature into the great event it is today. Swimathon really was ahead of its time giving people a chance to get active and do some good at the same time. This year, Swimathon again provides a fantastic opportunity to bring together swimmers of all ages and abilities to raise vital funds for Marie Curie to continue their work caring for and supporting people living with a terminal illness, and their families.”

Plane sailing for engineer Lukasz A student from Horsham helped take a plane to pieces for a special trip.

Lukasz Tomaszewski, 20, was one of a quartet from Horsham who travelled to Redhill Aerodrome with lecturer Zahid Khan to prepare the plane to move to its new home.

Later staff and students at Central Sussex College at Crawley, which Lukasz attends, gathered to watch the arrival of a two-seater aircraft on Thursday.

The four aeronautical students from the college had worked together to remove the wings, empty the petrol tank and ensure it was safe for transportation.

Lukasz said: “It was a great opportunity to be able to prepare the plane for its transportation here and it feels so good to have it at the college”.

Programme area manager Zahid talked about the benefits the plane would have on the Aeronau-

tical Engineering course. He said: “Aeronautical is one of the most diverse industries to work in and provides many different routes towards career progression. With the UK’s Aeronautical industry set to expand significantly in the next decade, I am very excited about having this plane for students to work on. It will be incorporated into their current modules and I am so pleased that we are improving the learner experience at the college as well as delivering courses relevant to current industry practice.”

Now housed in the college’s engineering department, the small plane will immediately become part of the students’ practical element of their course.

It will be also be used alongside their theory studies to develop their aeronautical skills including Aircraft Maintenance, Aircraft Instrument and Indicating Systems and Aerodynamics.

Application key to success

People living in West Sussex who experience anxiety and depression can now make a self-referral online to get support.

They can use the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s Time to Talk service. The service covers Horsham and other areas.

Organisers say Time to Talk is a friendly and approachable service offering talking therapies for people who are struggling with psychological issues such as stress, worry and depression.

It is part of a national initiative to bring psychological therapies closer to where people live.

People wishing to refer themselves can go online at www.sussexcommunity.nhs.uk/ttt. Or they may call their local team, Craw-

ley and Horsham area on 01403 227048 and Mid Sussex area 01444 251084.

People have been able to selfrefer to the service since 2015 by making a phone call to their local Time to Talk team.

However, some people including men, young adults and people from black, ethnic and minority groups, can find it hard to make that initial contact by phone, and have said that they would feel more comfortable communicating to a health professional online.

Ed Brennan, General Manager of Time to Talk, said: “We are passionate about offering treatments for people who may be reluctant to visit their GP or speak to a member of our team to seek advice. We want to make it as easy

as possible for people to self-refer to our Time to Talk service. By offering people the opportunity to now self-refer online, via the service’s website: www.sussexcommunity.nhs.uk/ttt, we hope that may more people will make initial contact with us and get access to the professional support they need. If you are struggling and need our support, we’d urge you to get in touch with our team of therapists so that we can help you move forward with your life as soon as possible.”

Time to Talk offers a range of support including guided selfhelp via the phone, face- to-face and now online. They also offer group courses, cognitive behavioral therapy and counselling.

A Horsham school offered a record number of placings at Oxford and Cambridge took students to a session to help them with applications.

The Collyer’s students attended an evening of presentations and workshops focussed on 2018 Oxbridge applications, held at Godalming Sixth Form College in Surrey. Godalming

and Collyer’s are both part of the “S7” group, a consortium of sixth form colleges from across the south east. The consortium is chaired by Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley.

Senior Tutor Ian McAlister and Martin Nichols accompanied 34 students to the event, where they participated in workshops and heard presentations from Jonathan Padley Churchill College, Cambridge and Hannah Rolley from St Hilda’s College, Oxford.

Student Caitlyn Lyster said: “It was particularly enlightening with regard to developing the content of a personal statement. The presentations were very enjoyable too.”Connie Maskell added: “It was eye opening, but extremely useful.”

This Oxbridge trip is just one of the numerous events that the college manages for students and follows hot on the heels of other hugely successful “Planning Your Future” activities supported by the college’s busy Progression Directorate team.

Ian McAlister said: “Once again our students embraced the opportunity to learn more about their futures. With so many students now aspiring to Oxbridge or Russell group Universities it is deeply encouraging to see them participate so intensely and with such energy at these events.

“With record numbers this year being offered Oxbridge places from Collyer’s we are intent on developing this successful progression route and welcome the opportunity to hear first-hand advice from the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge.”

Dandelion Farewells celebrate 2 years of success and beautiful new premises

invitation to join them for coffee and cake.

The event was to celebrate two years since their launch and the opening of their new premises in Wisborough Green.

The new premises are a far cry from the norm. The warm, light

and welcoming suite of rooms feel more like a private living room, with soft colours, inviting sofas, calming artwork and free access to kitchen facilities. It’s discreetly neutral and includes a care area.

The warm welcome hints at a

funeral director with a difference and Dandelion Farewell advocates a flexible approach to funerals and after life care, which includes making it very personal to the deceased.

In fact, in October last year, Dandelion Farewells and their founder Judith Dandy won a prestigious award for Most Promising New Funeral Director 2016 at the national Good Funeral Awards.

The award was based on their fresh approach.

Explaining the company ethos and vision behind the new premises Judith said, “We start with a blank page and then create a funeral that reflects the person who has died and their loved ones. Popped the question this Valentine’s day? What to consider before your wedding day Valentine’s Day is over for another year. Many individuals in relationships are likely to have received flowers or chocolates.

Some may have used the romantic day as an opportunity to pop the question or may even find that a ring awaits them.

It is easy to get immediately swept up in the excitement of wedding planning, but do make time to look at our top legal tips for things to consider during your engagement.

Think about keeping your finances separate As unromantic as it may seem, you should view your upcoming marriage as a contract you will be entering into. Once you have entered into that contract, in the unfortunate event of divorce, the Court has the power to make various orders in relation to your finances, regardless of whose name the asset is in.

The Court does though distinguish between matrimonial and non-matrimonial assets and you may wish to try to keep your financial assets as separate as possible. Although the Court has the power to make orders in relation to both types of assets, you may have a better chance of protecting any premarital assets that have been kept separate.

Review any inheritance you have received It is particularly important to keep your

finances separate if you wish to protect any inheritance you have received. If once married you use your inheritance towards the family home or place this in a joint bank account, you will struggle to ring fence this in the event of your divorce.

Communicate How much do you really know about your each other’s finances? Now is the time to discuss this. If either of you has any debt then this should be disclosed so you can plan accordingly.

count, you will be jointly and severally liable for any overdrafts on that account. Your credit rating could also be affected if you take out a mortgage together or open a joint bank account. You may want to think twice about doing this if either of you have a particularly bad credit rating.

Protect the bank of mum and dad With property prices at an alltime high, parents are increasingly helping their children get onto the property ladder. If your parents gift you any money, they cannot specify this is to remain with you in the event of your separation. The presumption is the money has been gifted to you both. One way to try to regulate this is by entering into a declaration of trust, although the Court does have the power to override this in the case of spouses. The safest way to protect these sums is for the money to be loaned to the child as opposed to gifted and a loan agreement should be drawn up specifying the terms of repayment.

Think about making a will Once you marry, without a will, your spouse will inherit under the rules of intestacy.

They may not inherit your estate in full, depending on the size of your estate and whether you have any children. Should you wish for your spouse to inherit your estate in full, you will need to make a will.

Similarly, if you have children from a previous relationship for example and would you like them to benefit from your estate on death as opposed to (or as well as) your spouse, it is important to make a will to make provision for them.

It is important to point out that as soon as you marry, your existing will becomes automatically invalid, unless it is made by you in anticipation of your upcoming marriage.

Get a pre-nuptial agreement The safest way to protect your assets and regulate how they would be divided in the event of divorce, is to have a pre-nuptial agreement. Whilst they are not

binding, they will be upheld by the court unless they fall outside the range of solutions that a court would regard as fair. They are therefore very persuasive provided they are drawn up correctly. Make sure though you do not leave things too late. It should be signed by you both 28 days before the wedding. It is also important that you both get independent legal advice and also that you both disclose to each other your finances beforehand.

Business Martin Read - Reporter Horsham resident Chris Aldridge is a familiar calm, authoritative voice on BBC Radio 4, frequently starting the day’s programmes at 5.20am and, just as often, handing over to the World Service at 1am.

Chris came to live in the town with his parents as a toddler and, apart from his university days, has remained in Horsham, telling the District Post: “It’s quiet and healthy - such a total change from London! And, there are many facilities for families, too, much appreciated by my wife and me when the children were growing up.” Chris obtained a maths degree and while a teaching career was contemplated, radio has been his first love since receiving a transistor as a ten year old, vowing to become a BBC radio announcer if a DJ role failed to materialise.

He is now an experienced Senior Announcer, training and managing a team of newsreaders and continuity presenters, scripting links across both Radio 4 and Radio 3.

Spurs were diligently earned, Chris explaining: “While I was at university in London I volunteered for hospital radio at St Mary’s, Paddington, only to be told that, if I was serious, I had to undertake three months of ward visiting before I’d be allowed anywhere near a microphone. Although that was initially disappointing, it proved extremely valuable because I discovered what the audience wanted.” Additional volunteering followed at nearby BBC Radio London, involving research - and some interviewing, Chris musing: “Although I probably

wasn’t sufficiently combative, I learned a great deal. I wasn’t paid but it did allow me to get a foot in the BBC door.” With the practical knowledge gained, after graduating he landed a Studio Manager role, soon finding himself archiving hours of Hitler’s speeches and providing sound effects on his way to Radio 4 announcing after a spell as a Producer with the newly launched Radio 5.

But, the balance is delicate with appropriate gravitas required as Chris found when having to announce and update news of escalating tragic events like the Boxing Day tsunami in Indonesia and the Paris attacks. And, sometimes unplanned things happen during live broadcasts, such as recently when Tomasz Schafernaker spluttered to a halt in mid shipping forecast, obliging Chris to take over seamlessly.

Surveys confirm that the four times daily forecasts are still greatly valued by navigators of vessels large and small, especially those beyond the reach of satellite communication and Chris has enjoyed speaking to local groups about the vagaries of the forecasts. He also relishes occasional forays as a warm-up act for Any Questions.

Travelling conditions, though, can be demanding and leaving for work at 3am and often not returning until around that time can take its toll, but Horsham restores Chris’s sanity with some gentle jogging and dog walking. Church activities and music are also important and he is happy to have been MC at the Horsham Hospital Fete and the Cootes Farm Community Fayre, summing up with: “It’s always nice to be asked to do Horsham things whenever my sporadic pattern of shift work permits.”

Kadia to perform at Horsham Folk Club

Acoustic trio from Bournemouth, Kadia (pronounced kay-dee-ah), will be performing a mix of traditional and contemporary folk songs, strongly rooted in the British folk tradition, at Horsham Folk Club.

The band, who combine cello, fingerstyle guitar, 8-string ukulele and mandolin with three part harmony to create rich and uplifting music, interspersed with history and storytelling, are currently working on an EP of five traditional songs, to be released in April.

Kadia’s debut album ‘East of Alexandria’ made The Telegraph list of top folk albums of 2015, where it was positively received as a record ‘full of unexpected surprises’. It was also nominated for the Fatea Magazine Debut Album of 2015 award, alongside Stick in the Wheel and The Changing Room. The album has received positive reviews from publications, including Shire Folk and Fatea Magazine, who dubbed it ‘an album of promises fulfilled’.

In 2016, Kadia performed on Main Stage 2 at Cambridge Folk Festival, alongside La Vent du Nord, Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys, and Wildwood Kin, adding to an ever increasing list of respected festivals, at which they have played.

The band has had the opportunity to support Jim Moray, Gilmore and Roberts, The Willows, Moulettes, Nizlopi, Jackie Oates, Chris Leslie, Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston, Jess Vincent, and Ninebarrow among others and is also seeing increasing radio play

Gangsta Granny coming to Horsham prior to West End

The Birmingham Stage Company is bringing the world première of David Walliams’ Gansta Granny to The Capitol from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 March.

Walliams, who is one of the judges on the popular Britain’s Got Talent TV show and creator of the ground-breaking comedy series, Little Britain and Big School, is now the best-selling author for children in the country.

David began his publishing career at Harper Collins in early 2008 with his debut novel The Boy in the Dress. Then, after writing two other popular sto-

ries, in 2011, he published Gangsta Granny, which was shortlisted for both The Red House Children’s Book Award and for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize.

In 2013, a televised version of Gangsta Granny was shown at Christmas on BBC One, with an all-star cast, including David Walliams himself. Gangsta Granny went straight to number 1 in the children’s book charts and the books have been translated into no fewer than 30 languages.

On opening night of Gangsta Granny at Birmingham New Alexandra Theatre, chart topper Walliams commented: “What a fantastic show! Superb! And so much better than the book!”

Community Projects & Events Officer (NJC Scale Point 26-28) 30 Hours Per Week The successful candidate will report directly to the Clerk to the Council and be responsible for a range of projects and events. Skills will include the ability to use the Microsoft Office suite of applications. The candidate should be articulate with an excellent command of English as the role will involve a high level of detail and be willing to undertake training as considered necessary for the position.

The candidate should hold or be willing to undertake the Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCA) within a one year from the date of appointment and have attended or be willing to undertake the basic training for Clerks. This training will be provided by the Sussex & Surrey Association of Local Councils.

This position will hold a degree of responsibility and will be required to take the lead within the organisation providing cover for the Clerk in her absence and at Council meetings as and when required.

In addition to the responsibilities of the existing Projects Co-Ordinator & Administrator role there will be additional tasks e.g., managing The Visioning and other Community Projects; management and administration of Section 106 Funding and associated projects, producing reports on the feasibility of individual projects; co-ordination and management of community events. The role will also require the candidate to have the ability to liaise with the Clerk and Members of Council as and when required.

Horsham carpet Staines Charlotte White scored Horsham’s fifth

South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Staines Ladies 0 - 5 Horsham Ladies Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter After scoring nine goals in the cup the previous weekend Horsham Ladies posted their biggest league win of the season with

a five nil demolition of lowly Staines, whom they beat 3-0 at Broadbridge Heath in October.

The ladies travelled with 14 players and all had good time on the pitch, Horsham dominating from the start. After several short corners went begging conversions followed, first by Elle Blakesley and then by Alex Malzer, enabling Horsham to lead 2-0 at the break.

Junior Football Round Up Cranleigh U15 4 – 2 Horsham Sparrows U15 Sparrows played their Division A league match away against Cranleigh in cold and snowy conditions. After a tight and evenly matched opening 20 minutes Sparrows fell behind to a great goal and then conceded a penalty which the hosts converted to give them a 2-0 half time lead.

Sparrows started the second half the better and after running on to a through ball from Joe, Oliver B hit a shot from 25 yards that dipped under the crossbar.

Another shot from distance, this time from Andrew, also beat the Cranleigh keeper to bring Sparrows level. Cranleigh then recaptured their first half form and put Sparrows under constant pressure with Louis in the Sparrows goal being forced into a number of fine

saves. The Cranleigh pressure eventually was rewarded by two late goals allowing them to claim the points in a 4-2 victory. MoM Andrew.

Horsham Sparrows U16 3 – 2 Lingfield U16 The team hosted Lingfield for their last ever league fixture.

After taking the lead 3 times, they managed to hang on for a welldeserved 3-2 win. A fantastic hat trick from man of the match Harry B capped a great team performance.

Oakwood Women 5 – 0 Horsham Sparrows Women After an excellent first half performance on a sticky pitch Sparrows more than matched the runaway league leaders Oakwood leaving the match goalless at the break. The second half started in

The ladies retain their seventh in the table spot, just one point behind Reading – with the aim of a top five finish. They return to action on Saturday February 25 against fourth placed Tulse Hill & Dulwich at Broadbridge Heath.

With Chesworth playing at their best, Nyle Barton scored a brace before Josh Hayes then took to the stage and over the next 15 minutes scored a hat-trick, then added a 4th with a rainbow kick. Henfield pulled one back but their fight was gone and Ben Lovelock slipped home a toe poke to give the defending champions 3 more points and one hand on the league cup.

Heath back to winning ways SCFL Premier Division Arundel 1 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath got back to winning ways with a 2-1 away win at Arundel, a victory that sees the Bears move up to sixth place in the division.

Steve Painter was forced to make 3 changes to his back four due to injuries and unavailability and he welcomed back Martyn Flack for his first appearance of the season and the former Heath captain was partnered at the heart of the defence by Dan Attwater making his first start since early October.

Jake Holmes had the first real chance of the match on 5 minutes when he headed a Scott Weller corner just over the crossbar but for the next 20 minutes it was the home side who created the better chances with the lively Asa Nicholson being denied a goal by Flack who got back to clear off the goal-line.

Heath weren’t so lucky in the 18th minute when an attack broke down on the edge of the Arundel penalty area and the host’s counter attack ended with the ball being played out wide on the left to Harry Russell who drilled a low right foot shot under Chester from 20 yards into the far corner. A few minutes later Russell had a great chance to make it 2-0 but this time he shot straight at Chester. Heath gradually got into the game and on 26

minutes a Rob Godfrey cross from the right came out to Shaun Findlay who tried to lob the ball over the Arundel keeper James Fernandes but the keeper did well to push the ball over the crossbar.

Ollie Moore then came close with a shot that went inches wide of the post and Holmes had an effort cleared off the line. In the final minute of the half the pressure finally paid off when Godfrey played a through ball into the path of Moore who set up Holmes to hammer the ball into the net from 8 yards.

Midway through the second period, Heath were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, Dan Sandell took the kick but an Arundel player raised his hand high above his head to stop the ball and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Holmes stepped up to convert the penalty for his 20th league goal of the season.

Sandell came close to making it 3-1 when he received the ball some 20 yards from goal and dribbled past two defenders before hitting a right foot shot that went narrowly wide of the post. In the closing minutes, Arundel introduced Cian Tilley as a substitute and he almost levelled for the Mullets with a shot from 12 yards that Michael Chester saved brilliantly low to his left and then got up to block the follow up at the near post.

So another 3 points for the Bears but Arundel will be hoping their luck changes soon in their attempts to move away from the relegation places.

Gymnastics Dave Smith - Sports Editor In their first ever competition four Artistic Gymnasts from Horsham Gymnastics Centre all achieved commendable results at a pre-grades competition in Kent.

All four gymnasts competed at grade 6 in age with Horsham’s Lara Tilyard putting in a superb performance to win the overall title. From the other three

Horsham gymnasts, sixth place was achieved by Georgia Stables while Poppy Finn and Anna Flore finished joint seventh.

The high positions from all four girls gave them second place as a team and in addition, Lara capped a very successful day by winning the most artistic beam routine.

The four gymnasts now go to the full grades competition in March where they will be hoping to be well placed.

At Oxford Horsham were without four key players – impressive newcomer Sean Pearcy and Vice-Captain Freddie Campbell (working abroad), depriving the engine room. With fatherhood beckoning, Captain Andy Isaacs was playing for the seconds at home in case his wife got the call and Dom Cohen was also absent.

England U18 squad keeper Matt Upchurch stood in for Isaacs in

goal, doing well on his debut in South League Premier Division 1, three times negating Oxford’s short corner specialist Jack Biggs, whose 23 goals make him the leading scorer. Dan Humphreys took over as captain and Rob Turnbull came up from the seconds, neither looking out of place, but Team Manager Al Campbell said: “It boiled down to them scoring two goals and us failing to do so, as simple as that. We played the better hockey but they took their chances and we didn’t.

Overall though our depleted side performed well against a team much higher up the table and the quality of our replacements augurs well as we approach the business end of the season. At the break, we were just a goal down but their keeper had an outstanding game, stopping a barrage of shots, especially from Ellis Woolley. Their two goals resulted from basic errors, but inexperience breeds that.” With seven games remaining Horsham are currently 9th – one place above the play-off zone – and have earmarked victory in their three forthcoming fixtures with teams nearest to them in the table (two below them and one just above) - to move them out of danger. That is achievable with their strongest side on the pitch playing as impressively as they did recently against teams at the top of the league. Meanwhile, Horsham return home tomorrow – Saturday – to play high-flying London Edwardians, to whom they lost 2-1 in Battersea on Guy Fawkes night.

Atlantis off to a flying start at K2 Swimming Atlantis Swimming Club competed at the County Swimming Championships at the K2 in Crawley.

After a good showing at the county relay and long distance events in the previous weekends the club looked to the individual swimmers to carry their successful start forward.

The 10 and 11 year old boys, Will Weeden, Jamie Smith, Oliver Colombo, Charlie Clarke, Devon Harwin and Bruno Haskell all contributed valuable points with Colombo putting in the best performance by securing a gold medal in the 50m backstroke. Alys Short and Katie Oliver swam well for the young girls.

The 12 year old girls’ category was dominated by Amber Ranson who swept all the competition aside by winning four gold medals. Teammate Tessene Arezki also swam brilliantly throughout the weekend picking up two bronze medals.

13 year old Jacob Davis breezed home with a comfortable gold medal in the 200m breaststroke, whilst training partners Issy Hayes and Olivia Round-Pitman secured gold medals in the 200m fly and 50m free respectively.

The 14 year old girls showed some fantastic swimming with Jess Glassford winning a gold

medal in the 50m free and Millie Weeden and Emma Harrison excelling in the breastroke.

Freya Fulcher took gold in the 200m backstroke and not to be outdone, James Hartley won gold in the 200m breast and Toby Van Der Hut added the Junior Championship title in the 400m free.

Senior girls Zoe Cawsey and Beth Britton both made the finals in the 50m free and 100m free respectively. Bronze medals for Cawsey in both events were the highlights of what was a tough weekend of multiple events for her.

Meanwhile Britton brought home two silver medals in the 200M back and 100M free and the Open Championship title in the 50m free, which makes her the fastest girl in the county.

Aiden Sparling was flying the flag for the senior Atlantis boys making championship finals in every event of the weekend including an impressive silver medal in the 200m freestyle event. Breastroke supremo Lily Davis hardly broke into a sweat with two Open Championship titles in both the 50m and 100m breastroke.

The final weekend of the County Championships takes place at the end of February when once again Atlantis hopes to build upon their medal haul.

Hawks team debuts while established squads win U11 Horsham Hawks made their debut

Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor U14 Horsham Hawks 88 - 65 U14 Worthing D&D The U14 Hawks remain second in the Sussex League with a solid victory over Worthing. Horsham’s Harry Rose opened the scoring which was further extended with seven quick points by Josh Lea-Clayton and Fin Bennett as the Hawks took a commanding 16-4 lead. Ten straight points from Horsham’s Josh Tavolieri saw the home side end the period with a 26-10 advantage. In the second quarter scores from Oliver

Brooker, Andre Gordon, Anaya Wakefield and Charlotte Willcox allowed Hawks to open up a 34-13 lead. However, a 14-2 Worthing run saw the visitor’s back in the game with the lead narrowed down to 46-33 at the half.

Josh Mason-Lovett opened the scoring for the Hawks after the break as both teams traded baskets. A 10-2 Hawks run led

by Lea-Clayton and Tavolieri threatened to blow the game wide open. However, Worthing again responded, this time scoring three straight three pointers and reducing the deficit to 68-57 at the end of the third quarter. In

the final period Horsham held Worthing to just six points over the next nine minutes as they dominated the period. Further scores from Bennett, Rose, LeaClayton, Brooker, Tavolieri and Mason-Lovett sealed a convincing 88-65 Hawks victory.

U11 Horsham Hawks 20 – 40 U11 Shoreham Spartans Twelve excited U11 Horsham Hawks had their first taste of competitive basketball in a friendly game against the Shoreham Spartans.

The newest Hawks team got off to a quick start with Theo Ramage opening the scoring followed by a further two baskets by Harry Filson. The shots stopped dropping but that didn’t stifle the young Hawks enthusiasm to keep going. Harry Filson, Tyler Moyo and James Tavolieri added six more points to the score with the Hawks narrowly trailing 12 – 19 at the half.

Going into the second half good play was transferred into scores for Horsham’s Kieran O’Connell, Tyler Moyo, Charla Flint and Theo Ramage. With the Spartans ahead by twelve points at the end of the third period, the Horsham players kept battling hard. In an energetic and enjoyable game it was first blood to the Spartans, 40-20, with the Hawks looking forward to a rematch next month.

The Hawks are arranging more friendly matches for the U11s this

season with the aim of putting a squad together to compete in the Sussex league for the 2017-18 season.

U16 Horsham Hawks 76 – 69 U16 Worthing D&D Horsham Hawks began a triple dose of away games with a good win at Worthing D&D Dazzlers to move to third in the Sussex league. Dazzlers were a much improved team from the reverse encounter earlier in the season and made Hawks work hard from the first whistle. The opening quarter ebbed and flowed with George Makin and Jamie Atkins shining for Hawks but Dazzlers took a 11-9 lead before Hawks went on a 7 nil run to close the quarter 16-11 ahead. The early stages of Q2 saw Hawks struggle to penetrate Dazzlers defence allowing the hosts to come within 2

points with 4 minutes remaining.

Hawks then rallied with Kieran Lee and Josh Raby scoring to open a 7 point gap before Dazzlers closed the score once again with the quarter finishing with Hawks narrowly ahead 34-32.

The second half began with Dazzlers going ahead 43-41 after 6 minutes. However an 11 nil run for Hawks put them back in control with scores from Lee, Raby and James Maclean to open a 9 point gap. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the period with Hawks leading 60-51. In Q4 Dazzlers closed the gap to 4 points with 3 minutes left in the game but Hawks then showed their quality with a flurry of scoring in a 10-2 blitz with important scores from Maclean and Raby to calm any nerves ensuring an excellent victory 76-69.

being the only Horsham goal in the three defeats - they are now letting in plenty with ‘keeper Josh Pelling seeing the ball hit his net 10 times in those three games.

The incentive that gave local school children and their families from Greenway, Kingslea, St John’s, Sir Robert Southwell and Southwater Junior School free entrance to the game boosted the attendance on what was a bitterly cold and miserable day. They

formed part of a crowd of over 400 who created a superb atmosphere that unfortunately the home side could not live up to on the pitch by producing a positive display and result. With Horsham almost certain to remain in the Ryman League it is events off the field that will matter more in the coming months with the planning application for a new ground set to be heard by Horsham District Council in March.

London 2 South East Horsham 10 - 3 Crowborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter The game started in a semiblizzard and then conditions got even colder, but Horsham’s workmanlike win warmed the spirits.

On Saturday’s showing, it was difficult to see why the Crows are marooned at the bottom of the table with just two wins from 16 starts and by far the worst statistics in the league - especially as

they walloped Hove the previous week. Inability to capitalise on opportunities is the key: they made the early running but missed a penalty and then had an attack thwarted on the line.

Horsham also had chances – an outstanding tackle at close quarters and then a knock on denying them, but they gradually came more into the game, rewarded by blindside flanker Dan Crook’s try in the 26th minute. Although the long range kick failed, Horsham now had possession, until a collision-induced serious-looking injury led to Johnny Ordidge

being rushed to East Surrey Hospital for an urgent investigation.

Soft tissue damage was diagnosed, requiring a few weeks of recuperation. After the lengthy stoppage, Richard Tredgett gave Horsham a ten nil lead with an unconverted try.

At the start of the second half, Crowborough kicked a penalty, followed by incessant pressure trapping Horsham back, unable to clear. The Horsham defence, though, held secure before, incredibly, Crowborough missed a short range penalty in front of the posts, a real let off. Eventually, near the end, Horsham launched a sole attack, Richard Tredgett battering through, but to no avail, the game ending 10-3 in Horsham’s favour. Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We defended brilliantly in the second half. Despite their position Crowborough aren’t that easy to beat – they kept attacking and pushed us hard.” Horsham Captain Tom Johnson added: “We didn’t have a game last week and although we trained we weren’t quite match aware and just couldn’t get any possession going in the second half. But, it was a useful win and we’ll take that!”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham, looking to avenge a 27-35 home defeat at the end of October, visit fourth placed Dartfordians.

The match started slowly, perhaps the players found it hard to get going in the biting cold wind, but very little happened until the 10th minute when Park’s Dan Moody had a half-hearted shot at goal which was followed by an equally soft header from the usually deadly striker Kieran Lavery.

Then, in typical fashion for Horsham of late, George Gaskin when having a clear sight of goal fired his shot straight at visiting ‘keeper Callum Thomas. South Park were now in the ascendancy however and Pelling had to be alert to save from Ben King and then Lavery.

The pressure and better play from the visitors had Horsham on the back foot and again Lavery tested Pelling before Moody shot wide when he should have at least made the Horsham ‘keeper work.

Although nearly all the meaningful efforts on goal came from South Park the large and enthusiastic crowd were kept hopeful as the score remained goalless upon the referee’s half time whistle.

From the restart, the match continued in the same vein with Nathan Ayling forcing a save out of Pelling. It was, however, a short-

lived let off as with 55 minutes gone South Park took a lead that nobody could deny they deserved.

Some awful Horsham defending allowed Lavery to score with a free header from Moody’s corner kick and the deadlock was broken.

Given Horsham’s lack of attacking threat at 1-0 the match was probably already over but to be safe South Park doubled their lead with 15 minutes left on the clock. Moody had been a thorn in Horsham’s side all game and it was from his perfectly placed lob over the defence that Chris Smith hit a spectacular volley into the net.

Two further good chances came South Park’s way, before Horsham’s best effort, nearly their only effort, came deep in stoppage time when Charlie Farmer headed against the crossbar. This was a game to forget for Horsham although the hope is it was memorable for the many youngsters in the crowd and that they are keen to return, despite Horsham’s poor showing.

Horsham will be hoping to bring the poor run of results to an end, and score a goal, tomorrow (Saturday 18) when they travel to play Whyteleafe.

Big Boro win draws them level with leaders London 3 South East Pulborough 34 - 0 Eastbourne Rugby Martin Read - Sports Report Pulborough’s convincing clean sheet win put them back on level points (65) with Thanet Wanderers at the top of the table after Thanet were beaten in West Sussex by third-placed Haywards Heath.

Boro and Thanet have remarkably similar records – both have played 16 games, winning 13 and losing three, but Thanet have scored a handful more points and conceded 28 fewer. Boro were defeated

We travel to Beckenham tomorrow (Saturday) to take on Old Dunstonians. We beat them 41-21 at home in October but have never won over there. They may be ninth but they saw off Gillingham Anchorians last week and we’re at that stage of the season when we’ve got a few injuries – former captain Richard Nicholls is out for the remainder and Frazer will probably be available for just two of our last six matches.”
