Volunteers sought for special role A hospice is seeking people with a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. St Catherine’s Patient and Family Support Team is looking for volunteers to join them to give emotional support to terminally ill people and their families. This could be anything from providing companionship to a patient, to helping a family after a bereavement. Working alongside the hospice’s Patient and Family Support Team, they will be at the heart of the hospice, helping a wide range of people who are receiving St Catherine’s expert end of life care. Ann Pearson volunteers with St Catherine’s as a support visitor. She said: “I’m there to offer a listening ear and shoulder to cry on, if it’s needed. Sometimes speaking to a stranger is easier than sharing with family or friends, people speak more honestly when they don’t have to put on a brave face. I find it very
rewarding to be part of the team and I love talking to different people. “ It’s nice to know you’ve helped someone, even in a small way. One lady, who sadly lost her husband of many years, felt very alone, struggled with self-confidence, and found it difficult to go out. “I encouraged her to join one of our bereavement groups once our one to one sessions ended. There she made friends and even planned holidays with them. It was wonderful to see her grow in confidence.” St Catherine’s will provide full support and training but says volunteers would need to show emotional resilience and work within what it calls clear boundaries. Anyone interested can visit St Catherine’s website - www.stch.org.uk/volunteer/ or call the Volunteering Team for an application form on 01293 447351. The closing date for those interested is Tuesday.

Well worth the effort
Cheque handed over A visit to a hospice showed halfmarathon organisers why it was so worthwhile to support the charity. Once again St Catherine’s Hospice is to be the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k runs. The 2017 event will take place on September 24 and it will be the 35th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the second year of the new 10 kilometre race. The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee says it developed a
very good relationship with St Catherine’s Hospice and decided unanimously to once again support what it called an outstanding local charity. Seven members of the Half Marathon committee recently visited the hospice in Crawley along with representatives of the Reigate Half Marathon to learn more about how it operates. The visitors said it provided real insight and showed the passion and total dedication of the staff and volunteers that provide an
essential local service. Both races supported the charity and it was announced that a total of £17,000 had been raised by the Barns Green and Reigate races in 2016. Commenting on this year’s charity, Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director Vernon Jennings said: “Our visit to St Catherine’s Hospice showed us just what a valuable charity this is and we are delighted to be extending our association with them for another year. In addition to raising money for charity, we are also able to make significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help us with the staging of the race”. The Half Marathon and 10k races follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. The Christ’s Hospital School marching band will once again be playing while all the runners go through the grounds of the school during the race. Barns Green committee has presented a £7,500 cheque to the hospice. For further details on how to take part in the race just visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website at barnsgreen-half.org.uk

Sea cadets seek more crew members On the lookout
The Horsham Sea Cadets group is on the lookout for more members. It is based in Broadbridge Heath, and its activities include some on land as well as at sea. Alison Martin, chairman of Horsham Sea Cadets said: “We are very fortunate to have a wide range of training venues in the region including a decommissioned
naval destroyer in Portsmouth which provides accommodation for courses. In Weymouth we have the use of fantastic water sports facilities. Locally we have an outdoor activity centre and use of a large lake for rowing practise. “Our cadets have the opportunity to gain and achieve many qualifications including Duke of Edinburgh Awards, RYA yachting
and dinghy certificates, BTECs in Citizenship and Leadership, first aid, climbing, powerboating and canoeing. These qualifications are greatly valued by our cadets, colleges and future employers. Even more valued though is the boost in self-esteem and sense of involvement that the cadets gain.” The meetings are open to both males and females and the uniforms are provided free and courses are subsidised with additional bursaries and grants available if they are required. Juniors, age 10-12 meet 7-9pm on Mondays and seniors, age 12-18, meet 7-9pm Mondays and Thursdays 50 weeks of the year. Meetings are held at Broadbridge Heath Village Centre. Adult volunteers are also sought. Alison said: “No previous Sea Cadet experience is needed as energy and enthusiasm are the qualities Everyone will have a skill, attribute or ability that they can pass on to our young people. One of the best things about volunteering however is the chance to learn new skills for which you will be offered training. Adults have many opportunities to gain nationally accredited qualifications.” Anyone interested in being a cadet or adult volunteer may e-mail kevin.milligan1@virginmedia.com or telephone 01403 273956.
Police officer threatened in thief chase A thief threatened an off-duty police officer with a screwdriver in a chase in Horsham. Police are appealing for witnesses after a burglary at ‘GAME’ in West Street, Horsham on Thursday afternoon last week. Three men were seen to walk into the store at about 3.45pm before leaving with about £1500 worth of video games. There were no reported injuries. An off duty officer, who was in the store at the time, chased one of the suspects before being threatened with what was believed to be a screwdriver but he was not hurt. Uniformed police officers arrested a 24 year-old man shortly afterwards on suspicion of aggravated burglary and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He was taken into custody while
enquiries continued. Two other men are thought to have got into a Ford Fiesta before driving off. Detective Sergeant Vicki Tomlinson said: “One of the suspects has been described as white, around 6’3” with brown hair shaved at the sides. He was wearing a dark jumper and jeans with an ear bar in his left ear. “The other suspect is described as being much smaller, wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. If you were in the town centre on Thursday afternoon and saw anything suspicious then please get in touch.” Witnesses can report information online (https:// sussex.police.uk/contact-us/ response-to-appeal/) quoting reference 837 of 16/02. Time Travellers Café opening for dementia patients People living with dementia have a new drop-in venue to meet in. The Time Travellers Café will run at The Hub, Church Lane, Upper Beeding from March 2 , and after that will be open every first Thursday of each month. Organisers say that the concept is to provide a safe, relaxing, fun place for people with dementia or age related memory issues, together with their families and carers, to share experiences, have access to information and to meet others in the same situation. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
ted with some on the day, free of charge. The bikes that failed the check had more complex faults that needed to be rectified with replacement parts. Once again, as many repairs as possible were made on the day, so students had a safer journey home, and the students, the parents and the school were made aware of any unsafe bikes so that remedial action could be taken. To accompany the checks, the Partnership also plans to talk at a future assembly at the shool, to highlight the importance of safety and visibility on the roads. Greg Charman, Community Safety Manager at Horsham Dis-
defines dementia as a group of symptoms caused by disorders that affect the brain. It is not a specific disease. It says people with dementia may not be able to think well enough to do normal activities, such as getting dressed or eating . They might lose their ability to solve problems or control their emotions. Their personalities may change and they might become agitated or see things that are not there. Worldwide nearly 50 million people are believed to have dementia and the number is forecasted to double every 20 years.
trict Council, said: “It was great to work in partnership with Forest school on this initiative. They were very quick to take us up on the offer to do the cycle checks and we appreciated this forward thinking approach.” Forest Assistant Headteacher, Ian Tomkins, added: “It was a fantastic morning for all, with the students fully engaged in the process. Our thanks goes out to the volunteers who made it such a smooth process, but most importantly, for placing our students’ safety first.” The Community Safety Partnership hopes to roll out the checks to all secondary schools in the district over the next 12 months. Members of the Horsham District Community Safety Partnership recently attended Forest School in Horsham to undertake a safety check of the students’ bikes, in order to promote safer use of this healthier method of transport to and from school. In total, 46 bikes were tested against a check list based on the ROSPA form (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), 32 of which passed. There were a total of 29 checks on the bikes and further checks on the helmet and visibility of clothing. Minor issues were rectified on the day by the Community Safety Partnership and a qualified cycle mechanic. Every bike without lights was fit-

Horsham’s Mancini Legal – celebrates their move with a special discount! Business Martin Read - Sports Reporter Approaching the fifth anniversary of the opening of the business, Mancini Legal are fulfilling their aim of growing with the Horsham district community by expanding their services with the opening of an extensive new flagship office in Horsham’s West Street, boosted by new experts joining the team - making it even stronger. Born and bred in Horsham, CEO Alessandro Mancini attended Greenway School and Collyers, leading to his legal training, telling the District Post: “Horsham is a vibrant town and it’s brilliant to participate and contribute to the growth of the district – our extensive local knowledge puts
us in a great position to do that and our new office will enable us to further develop the already extensive services that we are providing. And, we want to share our success by giving a 15% discount off all new conveyancing contracts entered into by the end on March!” In the last few months the practice has welcomed two new Directors - Patrick Kilby to head up the Real Estate and Commercial Department, and Simon Lipscombe as Head of Dispute Resolution, while former barrister Wesley Goh’s deep knowledge of Immigration and Crime makes him an outstanding addition to the dispute team. Alessandro continues: “Our specially appointed bespoke professionals enable us to deliver a truly all round legal service from residential and matrimonial matters, including probate and wills, through to civil litigation and disputes, personal injury difficulties, employee, commercial and foreign law and even debt recovery. We pride ourselves in the
resolution of seemingly intractable contentious issues, which is enormously satisfying – we love new challenges! It’s invigorating to be working with the Horsham community. We’re getting great support and are developing positively after some really good clients have put their faith in us by using our range of services.” Mancini Legal also has offices in Chancery Lane and has opened a New York bureau to look after expatriate clients in that city. But, although this is a thriving international business operating from multiple locations, Mancini Legal sees Horsham as the heart of its operation, with a welcoming personal service with a family touch, Alessandro’s wife and father being key members of the team. Dynamic 35 year old Alessandro confirms that while Mancini Legal’s bespoke services routinely take on a variety of legal problems with great success, as witnessed by the glowing testimonials on their website, conveyancing, fully utilising their substantial district knowledge for the benefit
of clients, is a particularly strong feature. The Mancini Legal mantra is to be open, approachable and affordable while promoting life long relationships by giving the best possible client care. Alessandro Mancini sums up his dedicated company approach by saying: “There is no shut down in our business – we provide round the clock support and attention, continuing via e mail outside normal office hours. We want to continue growing in the local community that we know and appreciate so well, so we thank our past and present contacts and very much look forward to welcoming new clients to assist them with their requirements. Our website hosts a 24/7 chat service which enables existing clients and newcomers with enquiries to get answers and assistance at any time. We will shortly be having an open evening to celebrate the launch of our new office, when it will be
great to enjoy some relaxed time with both established, new and prospective clients.” Mancini Legal, 1st & 2nd Floors, 23 West Street Horsham, RH12 1PB (access via Black Horse Way) – www. mancinilegal. com – (01403) 337337 horsham@ manicinilegal.com

Entrepreneurial spirit on the up Remembered as firm celebrates double gold janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk
This month our Award Winning Business expert and author, Janette Whitney asks – Are you a budding entrepreneur? Britons are becoming increasingly driven toward starting up, as a new poll shows growing numbers of young people say they would like to run their own business. Research from Norwich Union for Your Business reveals that just over eight in ten people between the ages of 19 and 30 say they would or have considered starting their own business. Young people are keener to set up a fashion or events business, the survey found, followed by starting and running a bar, which is the dream of a third of all 22-45 year olds surveyed. The internet is overwhelmingly the place of choice to do business among older workers. Half of all respondents between 31 and 50 said they would like to become an internet entrepreneur. Despite the failure of many high profile dotcom firms following the 1990’s boom, respondents said they are now better informed as to what it takes to make a business successful. Among successful entrepreneurs, Body shop founder Anita Roddick came out on top as the most inspiring to Women, Whilst Richard Branson was most admired among men. Roddick surprisingly, came last among men, trailing behind ice cream entrepreneurs Ben & Jerry, Easy Jet’s Stelios Haji-Ioannou and broadcaster Chris Evans!
Starting up on your own has always required courage, knowledge and of course some luck. However, this research shows that the appeal of being your own boss and having greater control over your life seems to be increasingly outweighing the challenges associated with setting up your own business. In contrast to this, further research, this time by Barclays showed that nearly 40% of people come up with ideas for a business, yet a lack of confidence and the fear of losing the security of a regular income deters three quarters from turning their ideas into a venture. The survey revealed that a quarter of such ideas are spurred on by life events such as having children or an illness, while a fifth find theirs whilst on holiday. Wherever the idea comes from, over a third of respondents said they are driven to start up their own business because they are tired of working for the benefit of other people. Do you want to start your own business? Then let Janette show you how. Call her on 01403 733671 or visit www.whitneyassocs.co.uk for more information. A personal memory prompted a charity gesture when a firm near Horsham scooped double gold in a national contest. The Home Counties Pools and Hot Tubs firm’s two wins came at the prestige Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association national awards held at The Ricoh Centre in Coventry . And the firm gave £500 awarded as part of its success to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund charity in memory of a well-loved family member after boss Craig Trusson and his wife Gill collected their trophies. Managing director Craig told the Post: “My wife lost her mother to pancreatic cancer. The awards were the most significant things to us and we thought the charity could use the money better than us.” The judges in the awards rec-
ognised the best designs, installations and service provided by members of the U.K. pool and spa industries trade association. The firm is based at the Hillier Garden Centre in Brighton Road, just outside Horsham. The company’s first award was the association’s most prestigious one, The Peter Geekie Trophy for Retail Excellence. This is awarded to the business the association recognises as giving the best all round retail customer experience in the U.K. Peter Geekie was a pioneer in the residential pool trade and help Craig prepare for his success in the business. Craig said: “We were delighted to win. We have been runner-up four times I think in the Peter Geekie category since we have been here. We have a very beautiful trophy.”
The second gold award to the firm was for the winner of the “Residential Wellness Pool” category for an Original Endless Pool Installation. The business was established in 1983 and has been based at the Hillier Garden Centre since that time. The business specialises in the installation and maintenance of domestic swimming pools and retails Hot Tubs and pool and spa accessories from its award winning show centre. It has previously won eight gold medals in different categories in the SPATA awards as well as other awards in the past. Craig and Gill are pictured receiving the Peter Geekie award from Neil Murray chairman of Certikin and president of SPATA Alex Kemsley.

Politics, power and how we lost the plot The former special adviser to Ed Miliband and Harriet Harman, Ayesha Hazarika, MBE, is now considered to be one of the wittiest acts on the comedy circuit. Definitely one to watch for a bit of plitical comedy, she will be performing her State of the Nation Tour at Horsham’s Capitol in May. Since leaving front line politics, Hazarika has become a much sought after commentator, writing for the Financial Times, Guardian, Evening Standard, New Statesman and Grazia. Returning to her stand-up roots, and now delivering her one-woman show, State of The Nation, she is in huge demand on TV and radio, recently starring as a guest on Matt Forde’s Unspun for Dave. Further credits include regular appearances on Good Morning Britain (ITV), Sky Papers (Sky News), The Andrew Marr Show (BBC1), Newsnight (BBC2), The Agenda (ITV) and The Today Programme (BBC Radio4). Ayesha Hazarika lifts the lid on what life’s really like behind the scenes at Westminster, with brutal honesty and humour, and asks what’s next for British politics. Performance: Friday 12 May, 7.45pm, The Studio, Capitol Theatre. Tickets: £13, available by calling The Box Office: 01403 750220 or by visiting: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Last Friday saw the third installment of Slinfold Golf and Country Club’s gourmet evenings. To coincinde with Valentine’s Day, Chef, Mark Young, prepared a fine feast of 4 courses. The event was held, as before,
I’m planning on producing a Heston Blumenthal style menu in the near future at the club’s member’s lounge, which had been transformed for the evening to fit the mood, with balloons, heart-shaped confetti and candles. The first of the four courses was Seared King Scallops, caramelised endive, orange puree and orange foam. A Scotch Egg, wtih a twist, was served next, consisting of black pudding, quail egg and freshly made salad cream. The third course was succulent Masala Lamb, served with smoked aubergine puree,
coriander and jus. Dessert came in the form of a Crema Catalan Tart, with citrus and cinnamon custard, blood orange jelly and pink grapefruit sorbet. A complimentary box of Monty Bojangles Truffles was presented to each table, after coffee and petit fours. As always all 4 courses were well presented and bursting with flavour, a particular triumph being the scotch egg. Mark, again proves his worth
as a very accomplished chef being inspired by others “I’m always looking at ways to develop my dishes” he says “studying and learning from some of the greats, I’m planning on producing a Heston Blumenthal style menu in the near future” Slinfold Golf and Country Club’s events are open to both members and non members, to find out more got to www.slinfoldclub.co.uk

Time to enjoy one final summer of golf at Gatton Manor....
Over the past 50 years, since it’s opening in the 1960’s, Gatton has built a reputation as a well-respected club, whose members and staff offer a warm welcome to visitors, societies and golf break guests.
“ The whole team at Gatton Manor are committed to making this final season, one to remember. The course was fantastically maintained last year and we will ensure this continues throughout 2017.
However, time moves on and there are big changes afoot at Gatton, with the current owners having recently applied for planning permission to transform the club into state-of-the-art Medispa and wellness resort, making full use of the picturesque setting that the club enjoys.
The greens and fairways are in tip-top condition, and our a tree-clearing programme has allowed more light and air movement onto the course, which in turn has speed up the pace of play”.
As such, the club has announced its plan to close the course in October 2017. While this news is sure to sadden many golf lovers, it does however mean there is one final summer of golf to enjoy, and General Manager Jason Froggatt is determined to go out a high.
Showing no signs of slowing down the club are actively promoting their unique summer membership, as well as a variety of pay and play options including the excellent value weekday and weekend multi-play passes.

Nifty pancake racers tried to master the art of running and flipping with a frying pan as Horsham’s Charity Pancake Race brought fun to the Carfax. Horsham businesses, charities and other organisations threw down the gauntlet and sometimes dropped the pancake as crowds watched on in admiration and laughter. This year the event was held on Tuesday in school half-term week instead of the on the traditional Shrove Tuesday. Winners: Sainsbury’s Trophy - Harris Lord, runners up Sainsburys; The Horsham Rotary Charity Shield -Action Medical Research; Non-Stop Party Shop Best Team Fancy Dress Prize - Action Medical Research; Waitrose Trophy Over-40’s Team - Rotary Club of Horsham; Rawlison Butler Best Pancake Flipper Trophy - Leo Joseph of Harris Lord; Mascot- Buster the Search Dogs Mascot. Benefitting Charities will be Chestnut Tree House Hospice, Action Medical Research, and St Catherine’s Hospice, supported by
the winners Harris Lord. Horsham Rotary Club, in partnership with Horsham District Council, organised the races to raise money for local charities. Mascots added a splash of colour to the competition. Competitors dashed in teams of four in the 80-metre relay race, using their own frying pan

Horsham Rotary Club, in partnership with Horsham District Council, organised the races to raise money for local charities and non- slip shoes on a course demanding a controlled mix of skill and speed. Cups and prizes were awarded to winners on the day including team fancy dress. Local road maintenance company Ringway was the main sponsor and organised the race course and signage, as well as sponsoring mascot race prizes. The Sainsbury’s store supplied pancakes and sponsored the main trophy, with other trophies being sponsored by Waitrose, the NonStop Party Shop, Rawlison Butler, South East Hearing Centres and Horsham Rotary Club.

Killer second half sinks Horsham London 2 South East Dartfordians 53 - 17 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham scored first and were still very much in the game at halftime but faded after the break to lose by a disappointingly wide margin. Games against Dartfordians have been memorable affairs and a closer scoreline was anticipated, but after defeat the previous week the hosts seemed determined to get back to winning ways and victory moved them up one place to third.
But, Horsham’s Richard Tredgett opened the scoring with a try under the posts, converted by Will Bell. A favourable bounce enabled the Darts to get across the line, but they failed to maximise before a wide Rob Grant try restored Horsham’s lead. Then, a Darts penalty reduced the deficit before another penalty, at close range, led to a converted try to leave Horsham shaded 15-12 at the interval. On resumption Dartfordians were even more positive and soon went wide for another try, kicked over to put them 22-12 ahead until additional pressure produced two more tries. With Horsham un-

able to break through impressive defence a long home run enabled Darts to go further ahead, boosted by a kick, then two more converted tries gave them 53 points. Josh Steggles notched up a consolation try for Horsham in the 79th minute but the result had long since been a formality. Horsham, still sixth, next take the field - in a home game against eighth in the table Old Alleynians on Saturday, March 4. In November Horsham bested the visitors 37-32 on Dulwich Common and last week OAs were humbled 41-19 by bottom club Crowborough.

South League – Premier – Division 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 - 2 London Edwardians Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Before the game, Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “London Edwardians are a solid side and they play men’s hockey, so we’ll have to do the same!” And that is just what Horsham did, earning praise from the opposition goalkeeper, who said: “When Horsham play like that I just can’t believe where they are in the league.” Horsham are tenth, one point behind London Wayfarers who they play at Battersea Park tomorrow (Saturday). Against London Edwardians Horsham conceded a soft goal in the fifth minute when the visitors were allowed too much space in the box, but a strong Joey Humphreys run through and pass to John Burroughs culminated in a short corner, beautifully con-

verted - hard on the deck by Ellis Woolley to level the score. With Horsham keeper, Captain Andy Isaacs, busy in goal three Edwardians short corners were neutralised and two Horsham set pieces also came to nought, despite Cirdec Atkinson strikes. With the scores still level, one apiece, after the break Horsham immediately attacked, but Edwardians subsequently broke away, catching the defence unaccustomedly open to regain the lead. Horsham though were coming more and more into the game, pressure creating four short corners, Woolley superbly crashing the first into the top right of the net for the teams to share the points – an equitable result, although a win would not have flattered Horsham. Al Campbell summed up saying: “Our discipline is much better, we’re getting fewer cards and I’m delighted that we keep taking points from top of the table teams – we’ve proved that we can do well against them and now we need to do the same against the lower teams!”
U16 Brighton Cougars 59 – 88 U16 Horsham Hawks Hawks U16’s produced their best overall team display of the season with an excellent 88-59 win away to Brighton Cougars. Baskets from Ash Beech, Kieran Lee and Josh Raby saw the Hawks narrowly ahead 21-20 going into Q2. Beech again was on the scoresheet in this quarter and was joined by James Maclean, Ollie Hutt, George Jeremy and Jamie Miller to see Hawks ahead 40-34 at the break. In the second half Hawks came out in attacking mood with Tommy Strange getting on the score sheet before again Raby and Beech found the basket for a 63-47 lead going into the final quarter. Cougars struggled to break through some fine Hawks defence while Jeremy, Morgan Hamilton and Miller inflicted further damage. Hamilton sank a long range 3 before Hutt scored the final
bucket of the evening to close the game U14 Haywards Heath Eagles 82 – 71 U14 Horsham Hawks Despite taking an early 8-4 lead Hawks found themselves behind 21-14 after the first quarter. A strong start to the second quarter from Harry Rose, Josh Tavolieri and Josh Lea-Clayton put Horsham up 22-21 before both teams traded baskets. Then some poor Hawks defending allowed Eagles to go into the break 43-32 up. Back to back three-pointers from Lea-Clayton and scores from Tavolieri, Rose and Brooker resulted in the third quarter finishing 23-23, with Eagles still 11 points ahead. Despite baskets from Miguel Venturini, Rose and another three-pointer from Lea-Clayton, Eagles finished the stronger to seal the 81-71 win. Horsham’s head coach David Clayton commented, “To win games like this we must get to the free throw line and then make our free throws. Missing fourteen free throws tonight really hurt us.”

Gymnastics Dave Snith - Sports Editor Last weekend 100 young gymnasts from all over the South East came to Horsham Gymnastics Centre, based in Pavilions in the Park, to take part in a Beth Tweddle Gymnastics Camp. Beth chose Horsham Gymnastics Centre as one of only three clubs in the South of England to run one her prestigious camps, showing how highly rated Horsham Gymnastics are as a club.
Beth has twice been the World Champion on Bars and was a World Champion on Floor. She also won the Bronze medal on Bars at the London 2012 Olympics; making her Britain’s most successful female gymnast of all time. The camps are an inspiration for young gymnasts who have the opportunity to train with Beth and learn from her vast experience. It was a particular privilege for Horsham’s own club gymnasts to have her come to their home gym to
train them. Head Coach at HGC, Maxine Woodward, said, “It was an easy decision to accept Beth’s offer to use our facility for one of her camps. I knew it would be a great opportunity for our gymnasts and I could see that all the children left the session with inspiration. Beth is a fantastic role model in our sport, she is very hard working and down to earth and demonstrates to the children that she was once just a little girl with a dream, and with the desire to work hard you can achieve amazing things.”

Another defeat for Lacklustre Horsham Horsham were well beaten at Whyteleafe
New addition, Ashley-Paul-Robinson
Ryman League South Division Whyteleafe 3 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham will be glad that they had such a good run of results through December and January which allowed them to put together a points total that should be enough to maintain Ryman League status for another season. If they had not, and with this alarming dip in form that has seen them lose their last four, conceding 13 goals and scoring just 2, both penalties, then they would be certainly looking very nervously at those relegation places. This was another poor performance from the Hornets that lacked the confident flowing football that was displayed so well little more than a month ago. In fairness, Dom Di Paola has injury problems and in the last week has brought in three new additions to his squad. To highlight just how short of attacking options Di Paola is one of those new recruits, midfielder Liam Wright, was thrown straight into the starting line-up as the main striker.
From the start, Whyteleafe looked the better side with Hornets ‘keeper Josh Pelling having to save superbly to prevent Sam Clayton giving his side the lead in the opening minutes. Tony Nwachukwu had an effort saved by the legs of home ‘keeper Ben Bridle-Card when perhaps the Horsham man could have done better but Whyteleafe then went straight up the other end and Horsham had a stroke of luck as Daniel Ajakaiye’s shot rattled the post with Pelling beaten. Horsham were not creating anything and looked likely to concede with every Whyteleafe attack. Pelling was again forced into a save to deny Ajakaiye opening the score and then Shawn Clement-Peter blasted a shot into the side netting with the goal begging. The periods of play that Horsham did manage to put together all fell apart as soon as the ball reached the opposition’s area. the lack of a someone who can hold up the ball is not only limiting their scoring opportunities but putting an overworked defence under added pressure. As the half came to an end Clement-Peter again was given far too much space but he hit his shot straight at Pelling and Horsham trudged off at half-time still in the game
thanks to some poor finishing and decent saves from Pelling. The second 45 resumed in the same vein as the first with Clayton again hitting a post and Horsham with it all to do. It did not take long however for that to all change as Scott Harris was dispossessed allowing ClementPeter to run 50 yards unchallenged before slotting the ball past Pelling for the lead. After dominating the game for so long without a goal, Whyteleafe then doubled their lead within 2 minutes; a static Horsham defence watched a free kick find the head of Scott Day and the unmarked substitute headed past Pelling. Given Horsham’s lack of goals at 2-0 that was probably it as a contest, however, Horsham were given a way back into the game with 65 minutes played. After Bridle-Card had saved Nwachukwu’s shot he then brought down Steve Metcalf who had reacted quickest to the rebound. From the spot, Scott Kirkwood gave the guilty ‘keeper no chance and when on the balance of play they should have been a number of goals behind, they were back in it. Instead of lifting Horsham the penalty did the opposite and if possible Whyteleafe took an even greater control of the game. The third goal was not long in coming and it was a result of an awful error from one of Horsham’s better performers over recent weeks, Josh Pelling. The Hornets keeper allowed a poor corner kick to escape from his hands and then fumbled the ball into his own net. In the dying minutes, Pelling redeemed his error and prevented a fourth goal with a good save from ClementPeter. He could not, however, prevent a fourth consecutive defeat for a team that lacks firepower and are quickly losing confidence.

Disappointing home defeat for Heath SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Crawley Down Gatwick Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Heath were punished for not putting away their chances by a hard working Crawley Down Gatwick team who have now completed the double over the Bears in their return to the league’s premier division. Heath started well and Dan Attwater almost gave his team the lead in the 5th minute when he headed a Dan Sandell free-kick just wide of the post; a minute later Jake Holmes beat the offside trap but his right-foot effort was brilliantly saved by the Anvils goalkeeper Andy Greaves. The visitor’s first chance came in the 10th minute when Dan Sullivan headed narrowly over the crossbar but just minutes later a Heath counter attack sent Jamal Sultan sprinting down the right wing and his cross fell to Ollie Moore who hammered a right foot shot into the net from 10 yards. It didn’t take long for the Anvils to draw level when Heath failed to clear a corner, the ball was played back into the penalty area where James Day drilled a low shot under Michael Chester. In the 30th min-
ute Ollie Moore was put through on goal but just as he was about to pull the trigger he was bundled over in the penalty area by Blair Cooney, Jake Holmes stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick but rifled his shot against the crossbar, a rare miss by Heath’s top scorer. In the final minutes of the half, a Sultan cross from the right was met by Shaun Findlay but his effort went wide of the post. It was Findlay again with the first chance in the second period when he received the ball from Moore but shot across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. Stuart Chester had a shot from distance that went wide of the mark but despite having the greater possession Heath failed to hit the target. In the 78th minute, Anvils corner from the right was met by the head of Tom Gannon completely free and the former Heath player steered his header wide of Chester for his teams second. In the dying minutes, a Sultan cross from the right to the far post was me by Mitchell Clark and Greaves did really well to block the header and then got up to save from Ollie Moore following up. So disappointment for Heath but a good win for the Anvils whose players certainly do put a shift in, something many teams in the league could learn from.
Uneventful goalless draw sums up the season SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 – 0 Loxwood Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Both Horsham YMCA and Loxwood have had inconsistent seasons that neither team will want to remember. This match summed their seasons up as it lacked excitement, consistency and indeed any purposeful football. The game started as meant to go on with the first 15 minutes producing no goal mouth action with both sets of players seemingly unable to string a pass together. It was, therefore, no surprise that the first piece of action of note came from a mistake when Dan Evans mishit his attempted cross which caught Loxwood ‘keeper Dave Carruthers wrong-footed and Evans’ ‘cross’ hit the far post before being cleared to safety. Another Evans cross, this time a well hit one, was defended by Ross Swaine who jus prevented Dave Brown from getting his foot to the ball. After another spell of nonactivity, Olly Gill shot wide and Caruthers saved well from Sam Schaaf. YM then had a let off when ‘keeper Mark Fox appeared to bring down Eddie French. The Loxwood appeals were vivacious but the referee was not moved and waved away all the Loxwood protesters. If it could possibly be, the second half was probably worse than the first with virtually no action until the last minutes. Schaaf did hit a shot straight at Carruthers and Charlie Pitcher’s tame effort was saved
with ease by Fox, but that was about it. The last 5 minutes then produced more than the previous 85 had, although that was not a difficult task. Phil Johnson’s effort troubled the traffic in the Brighton Road more than it did Carruthers and Alex Gathern seemed to prevent teammate Ash Dugdale’s header crossing the line when he was appearing to try and head it in himself. In the dying seconds, Fox dropped Ed Davies’ shot and the ball fell to Pitcher, but the Loxwood man was adjudged offside. Then right on the whistle, Johnson fired straight at Carruthers when he should have done far better. The final whistle couldn’t come too soon for both sets of players and probably the same could be said for the end of this disappointing season. Both teams will be looking to put this season behind them before regrouping for a challenge at the promotion places next season.

bonus point win leapfrogging Boro back top, four clear of Thanet Wanderers after they had lost to Aylesford Bulls. At St Dunstan’s Lane, Beckenham the teams were level at 14-14 at the break, but Boro were not to be denied, Saunders telling the District Post: “In October we beat Old Dunsts well at home, but this was our first win over there. We just wanted to get a win, so getting the bonus point
was the icing on the cake, especially as Thanet came a cropper. We’ve developed the good habit of winning tough games and the boys are determined to finish off our season in style.” Evergreen Guy Baxter and Will Truscott added further tries and, in the absence of Frazer Oliphant-Hope, George Lee kicked three conversions and a penalty, Captain Simon Burfiend saying: “With the talent in our side we always know we are going to score tries, we just need to remain patient and defend hard to make those opportunities happen, and that is what we are doing”. Clayton Saunders summed up with: “We’re well placed but we’ve got a tough run in – including Thanet, Folkestone (5th) and Lewes – fourth, so we’re certainly not counting our chickens. We’re still keeping a close eye on Haywards Heath, who are third and just one point behind Thanet. It’s in our hands and we just want to maintain the buffer zone that we’ve created.” Boro return to action when they welcome Ashford to Freelands on Saturday, March 4. Ashford are bottom of the table but Boro struggled to beat them by a single point - 25-24 - in Kent in November.

Hornets bring their poor run to an end Ryman League South Division Faversham Town 1 – 1 Horsham Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham ended their run of defeats on Tuesday night in the most unlikely of places, Kent. The Garden of England is not usually a happy hunting ground for the Hornets and given the awful run of form they are currently in, the expectations were not high, but they got off to a good start with an early goal and then played in a confident fashion not seen from Dom Di Paola’s men for a while. With just 2 minutes played Horsham went ahead through a well struck free kick from newcomer Liam Wright that gave Town’s ‘keeper William Godman no chance after Alfie Rogers had been fouled on the edge of the area. Horsham nearly made it 2-0 when a good ball from another new boy Ashley-Paul Robinson just evaded Rogers’ outstretched foot, then minutes later the lively Rogers was denied by Godman who was quickly out to dive at the Horsham man’s feet. The hosts struggled to put any meaningful moves together and in the opening half hour, they were limited to one long range effort that was high and wide of Josh Pelling’s goal. With 10 minutes of the half remaining the home side started to get more of the ball and the balance of play
turned their way. Pelling pulled off a point blank save and Alex Duncan cleared off the line to keep the lead intact. However 2 minutes into first half stoppage time the home side grabbed an equaliser. A quickly taken free kick was latched onto by Josh Stanford who calmly side-footed the ball past Pelling. The second half saw Faversham in the ascendancy and Horsham’s defence came under increasing pressure. Two excellent saves from Pelling sandwiched an effort from Tom Lawley at the other end that was blocked and cleared. The Horsham ‘keeper, keen to show that the error the previous Saturday was a one off, was in the form that won him the Ryman League’s best goalkeeper award in January, pulling off a number of first class saves to keep the scores level. Horsham, playing on the break, had chances themselves and Rogers and Wright continued to look a threat. As the game became niggly the constant sound of the referees’ whistle to signal needless fouls broke up the play and the game fizzled out to end with what was a well-earned and much-needed point for Horsham.. Horsham host CorinthianCasuals on Saturday, February 25, who are currently sixth with 18 points more than the Hornets. Di Paola will, however, be looking to build on things now the run of defeats has come to an end.

A glance at the score line – YM’s second goal-less draw in four days - might suggest a dull game, but it was a lively, entertaining enough encounter with both sides creating chances, albeit unfulfilled. The teams have met four times this season – Eastbourne won 2-1 at home in the league before YM dumped them out of three successive cup competitions: the Sussex Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup, the Peter Bentley League Challenge Cup (both after extra time) and the Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup. So, at Gorings Mead the visitors were looking to redress the balance in this rearranged fixture following January’s weather induced abandonment. In the match three early speculative Eastbourne crosses fizzled out ahead of a potentially dangerous YM foray and corner. Eastbourne then wasted two free kicks and a corner before YM missed from similar openings, their corner being scrambled away, the first half ending with two Eastbourne attempts thwarted on the line. After the interval there were saves at both ends with the ever enterprising Phil Johnson and Sam Schaff in action for YM. Three YM corners threatened, but
to no avail and in the dying stages Eastbourne had close and long range free kicks but neither side could find the net, points sharing being an equitable outcome. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “As we’ve had an injury crisis and have shipped too many goals for my liking I’ve decided to change the format, shutting the back door, prevent losing and aiming to nick the game. The boys worked hard tonight, we’re rebuilding confi-
dence and it was good to give a chance to Callum Jeal to come on as sub – he’s one of four or five good lads that we’re developing in the U21s.” This Saturday YM travel to bottom club Hailsham, whom they beat 4-1 at home in September. With 25 goals scored and 117 conceded – by far the worst record in the league – Hailsham have just one win and a draw from their 27 games and is 18 points behind penultimate club Arundel.

Speed dating helped youngsters on to a potential career that they might love. More than 260 Year nine students at The Weald School at Billingshurst took part in ‘Careers Speed Dating’. They had the opportunity to meet employer representatives from business areas such as the armed forces, fundraising, manufacturing, airline pilot, media, community policing, engineering, catering, building and construction. As part of the morning’s activities students worked in small groups with several business volunteers. The students had five minutes to quiz an employer on
any aspect of their job such as qualifications and skills, different entry routes, working hours, income and training and development opportunities. Volunteer James Bleach, a STEM Ambassador, said: “Many years ago someone came to my school and talked about a job similar to that which I now do. £200,000 work to end rat runs Drivers are to be steered away from using country roads as a “rat run”route at a cost of £200,000. West Sussex Highways department is making changes in Warnham to stop narrow country lanes being used as a short cut. Engineers will build out the junction of Strood Lane and A281 Guildford Road. The changes will stop motorists from turning right out of Strood Lane and left into Strood Lane. At the same time, West Sussex Highways will clear vegetation, refresh road markings, resurface the junction and complete drainage improvements. Work is due to last for three weeks, subject to weather and carried out during daylight hours from Monday to Friday. Strood Lane will close during the work and a signed diversion route put in place for road users. Once completed, work then starts on Byfleets Lane in Warnham. West Sussex Highways is also installing a series of laybys and passing places along it, between Strood Lane and
the Field Place Estate. The roadside verge will be repaired and reinforced. Work starts on this on February 27 and is expected to last for nine weeks. Byfleets Lane will close during the work, with access provided to local businesses and residents. A diversion route will be in place for road users. Work will be during daylight hours between Monday and Friday. The total cost of the two schemes is about £200,000. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “We are making these improvements in response to the feelings of the local community in Warnham. “They are concerned about the high levels of traffic using the country roads here. “The changes to Strood Lane will encourage motorists to use more appropriate routes. “Residents and businesses who use Byfleets Lane will also feel much safer once all the laybys and passing places are made more formal.”

She believes it is never too late to take a new challenge and said: “I found passion for horse riding when I was 50 and I then rode for 15 years” Although she never had a job, during World War Two Kathleen was drafted to the Women’s Voluntary Service because her daughter Valerie was over six years old. Valerie is now in her eighties. Kathleen took up

Make Billingshurst pretty invitation Businesses are being invited to make Billingshurst a prettier and more colourful place this summer. The Parish Council is offering local businesses the opportunity to sponsor planters lining the High Street. The council says attractive signs either side will enable firms to promote their names to a wide audience at the same time as showing their support for the community. Funds from the scheme will be used to provide more attractive planting schemes in the troughs,
which help bring colour to the main thoroughfare throughout the spring and summer. The Council’s Property Committee backed the suggestion enthusiastically at a recent meeting. Parish Council Clerk Greg Burt said: “This is a great way for the council to work with local businesses to make the village centre even more attractive for residents and visitors alike.” Anyone needing details on availability and sponsorship rates may contact Liz Berry on 01403 782555 or liz@billingshurst.gov. uk

New crop of nature tots spring up Having fun
As the weather hopefully warms up and days are getting longer, the Henfield-based Sussex Wildlife Trust is welcoming a new crop of Nature Tots aged 3-5 for outdoor family fun and games at Chesworth Farm, Horsham. Group Leader Tamara Jewell fills her Monday morning sessions with activities themed around local wildlife and the changing seasons. There is plenty of art and craft using natural materials, stories, games and a very popular mud café. Children will learn bushcraft skills from den building to campfire cooking, and woodcraft including whittling, sawing and drilling to create a bird feeder or insect home. Tamara said: “By exploring the different habitats, learning ID and tracking skills, pond dipping, and mini beast hunting, the children will get to know their local wildlife and find out how to help it thrive. I hope this club will spark a lifelong love of the natural world.
“Some children take a little longer to join in and learn new skills, and that’s where the sessions can really help with building self-esteem, physical co-ordination and social skills through child-led achievable challenges. Parents are often amazed at how resourceful and capable their children can become.” Sessions are held on Mondays from 10am until noon and restart this spring. Children must be accompanied by an adult and booking is essential. To book online visit: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/ naturetots For further information email Tamara: tamarajewell@ sussexwt.org.uk

All the romance of ballet
A cast of 60 girls aged four to 17 provided romance, drama and fantasy in a colourful and engaging ballet at a Horsham school. The Farlington School audience enjoyed Tchaikovsky’s memorable score and Natalie van de Braam’s mesmerising and original choreography. The ballet pits evil, embodied by the sinister Carabossa,
against good, and the acrobatic, frenetic dancing of mischievous fairies provided a clear dramatic and visual contrast to the graceful elegance of the courtiers, christening guests, pages and friends. The named fairies – of love, joy, playfulness, song and beauty – all had individual character as well as charm and gave a wonderful exam-
ple to the youngest dancers, quite enchanting as the good fairies. The costumes, make-up and effects were of the highest standard, not least in the representation of wild nature, conveyed through the abandoned dancing of the woodland fairies. The school reported that the love story was portrayed with great
sensitivity by Leah Constantine as Princess Aurora and Thalia Ballinger as the dashing prince in the de Braam Academy production. Their fluent and professional dancing was faultlessly complemented by the poise of Abbie Mellor and Tara Williams as the Queen and the Lilac Fairy. Some scenes are pictured.

Helping special friends far away A head teacher has thanked children, parents and friends who helped sponsor two special pupils thousands of miles away. The Towers Junior School at Upper Beeding has been sponsoring two children, Momadou and Fatou, to attend Medina Mannen School in The Gambia for the last two years. It has also been collecting Sainsburys’ vouchers and sending equipment to support the school. Last year it equipped the nursery with lots of toys and games with the vouchers collected. A former teacher has delivered letters to the Gambia. Head Clare Trelfa said: “To help raise money for next year’s sponsorship we are planning a fabulous finish to our Ice Worlds topic at the end of term. Without the generosity of our children, parents and friends we would not have been able to support this fantastic project, thank you.”

Rotarians joined with Gruffalo to bring a late but great Xmas present for a children’s hospice. They have now handed a cheque for £4,800 to Chestnut Tree children’s hospice. The Billingshurst and District Rotary Club raised the money by organising Santa’s Grotto at New-
Billingshurst Rotary President Durwin Banks said: “We must give our heartfelt thanks to Steve, Rhona and the team at Newbridge Nurseries for providing the beautiful Gruffalo themed grotto. Father Christmas met over 1500 excited children during the run up to Christmas. Inside the grotto, children were able to tell Father Christmas what was top of their list for presents, and whether they had been well behaved this year. They also received a present from the man himself. There was also a chance to meet the Gruffalo, who was often to be found around the garden centre.” Jayne Todd, Community Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree said: “Thank you so much to all the wonderful staff at Newbridge Nurseries and everyone at Billingshurst Rotary Club for the many months of organisation and effort that went into this event. The total amount that was raised is staggering and will help us to ensure we can continue to provide care to the children and families in our local community who need it. What an amazing achievement.” For further information about Chestnut Tree and to find out how you could help please visit www. chestnut-tree-house.org.uk Chestnut Tree House provides specialist palliative care services to 300 children and young people aged up to 19 with life-shortening conditions in East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire.
