Tip-off leads police to cannabis nursery phil dennett News Editor
A member of the public tipped off police about a cannabis nursery. Officers seized about 130 cannabis plants in various stages of growth from a stable yard just off the A272 between Wisborough Green and Petworth. Illegal producers of suppliers of cannabis can face maximum jail sentences of up to 14 years. Police went to the property at about 6pm last Saturday in response to anonymous information from a member of the public. At the stable yard they found the plants in two metal shipping containers on the site. A 35-year-old local person will be interviewed under caution at a police station later this month as police enquiries continue. Police have not disclosed whether the person to be interviewed is a man or a woman at this stage of the investigation. They have appealed for anyone who might be able to help them with more information to come forward. PC Paul Quinnell of Sussex Police said: “We welcome any information about illegal drugs and will always take positive action to disrupt criminality. “Anyone able to pass on details of suspicious activity or people can do so by emailing 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or phoning 101. Alternatively, they can
contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” People can also report online at https://sussex.police.uk/contactus/report-online/report-a-crime/ According to information supplied by the Government, under the law people can get a fine or prison sentence for taking, carrying, making or selling drugs or psychoactive substances. Sixth formers at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham have been celebrating news of their university offers. On average 98 per cent of the school’s pupils achieve a place at university. Despite a predicted national fall of about 5 per cent in full-time under-graduate applications, Christ’s Hospital says the aspiration of its pupils to go to university remains strong. The school says lots of hard work still lies ahead of students to achieve their grades, but they are now fully motivated to secure their places on first choice courses at some of the best universities in the country and overseas.
Their applications have resulted in offers to read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, Italian and Linguistics at Oxford, Biological Sciences at Imperial, Civil Engineering at Bristol, Geography at UCL, Mathematics at Oxford, Economics at Exeter, Politics and World Philosophies at SOAS, Philosophy at UCL, History at Durham, English at Oxford, and many others. Last year, as reported in the Post, five of the school’s students went on to study medicine at university. Peter Callas, Senior Grecian or Head Pupil at Christ’s Hospital is hoping to follow in their footsteps by studying neuroscience at Bristol University this September.

Thief sets fire to car Police are appealing for witnesses after a car was stolen from outside a house in Bramber and found burnt out in Rustington. The Land Rover was parked in a driveway just off Annington Road and is believed to have been taken some time between 1am and 2am on Saturday. It was found soon after 3am in Goodwood Close, Rustington after a call from a member of the public who reported a vehicle fire. PC Chris Finch said: “The keys to the car were kept inside the house and were also reported missing. We believe the property was broken into shortly before the Land Rover was taken. “If you were in the area and saw anything suspicious, or perhaps saw a green Discovery being driven in the area, then please get in touch.” Witnesses can email 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting reference 234 of 26/02. Alternatively you can report online (https://sussex.police.uk/contact-us/ response-to-appeal/) or call 101.

Caring Carrie heads for Westminster An environmental campaigner from Horsham district had a date at the Palace of Westminster in London this week. Carrie Cort, who lives in the hamlet of Coneyhurst, near Billingshurst, is one of 18 shortlisted entries for the World Wildlife Fund Earth Hour Heroes national competition. Category winners receive a £1,000 prize to reward their Earth Hour Hero initiatives. The competition, run in conjunction with People’s Postcode Lottery, invites people to nominate themselves, or others, if their actions are helping to save the planet. Carrie is one of six finalists in the Community Hero category, for her inspirational work in West Sussex campaigning for the environment. As a mother, wife and carer to a menagerie of animals, Carrie says she is fiercely committed to motivating those all around her to pursue a green lifestyle. She gave up a high powered corporate job running a video communications business to set up the environmental education and awareness initiative Sussex Green Living, and has trained with Keep Britain Tidy as an Eco School assessor. Carrie is dedicated to encouraging general environmental awareness and inspiring change to Sussex residents of all ages, including delivering educational
The Earth Hour Heroes competition is all about finding unsung heroes from across the UK who help protect our brilliant planet lessons to primary school aged children, and running ‘Green Clubs’ after school in the local area. In recent times Carrie has not only set up a community ecofashion show project, and is currently campaigning with Sussex MP’s and Councillors to raise awareness about climate change and need to build a more sustainable Horsham District and West Sussex. Naomi Hicks of World Wildlife Fund-UK, said: “The Earth Hour Heroes competition is all about finding unsung heroes from across the UK who help protect our brilliant planet - and Carrie certainly does just that.” To find out more about the fund’s work visit: wwf.org uk/ earthhourheroes

Learning out of classroom Sixth Form geography students left the classroom at Horsham for the beach to further their studies. They took a field trip to Newhaven and Seaford. The purpose of the trip was to give them the opportunity to gain some vital data collection skills in preparation for their independent investigation, which accounts for 20% of their final A level grade. The girls, from Farlington School in Horsham, were given support and advice from the staff from Juniper Hall Field Study Centre in Dorking. Pupil Victoria Jones said: “After measuring the beach profile and pebble sizes on Newhaven beach for several hours, we all really appreciated having a hot chocolate to warm up”. Olivia Bell said: “I feel much more prepared for the individual investigation now. It has given me lots of ideas for my project”. Yolanda Yang, who recently
joined the school from Kunming in China said, “It was an interesting day and was exciting to see the pebbles along the beach as we don’t have many of these in my region of China. It was great to learn outside of the classroom – this is a very different way of learning for me.” John Dwyer, Head of Geography at Farlington, said: “Our Sixth Form students gained a great deal from the day. We have studied coastal processes in school and to actually see the landforms created by erosion, transportation and deposition in the field was really helpful. “The students gained a useful case study of coastal protection strategies in Seaford and upon our return to school we worked on some statistical techniques based on the data we collected. It was not only an enjoyable day out of school, but it was of tremendous benefit for the forthcoming A level Geography examinations.”

Charities feel benefit from Horsham’s big day
Charities are counting the benefit of one of Horsham’s most popular outdoor attractions as it looks forward to its 10th anniversary in 2018. Organisers of last week’s pancake races in the Carfax have confirmed the amounts received by charities. Each of three charities receives £300. The money award to the most nominated charity went to Chestnut Tree House, St Catherine’s Hospice was nominated by
the winning team and Action Medical Research won its cash award as the winning charity team. Chestnut Tree House is a children’s hospice for West and East Sussex, Brighton and South East Hampshire. It cares for about 300 children and young adults up to the age of 19 with progressive lifeshortening conditions at Arundel. St Catherines Hospice at Crawley provides end of life care for people in Horsham, Crawley and other areas, and demand for its services
is so high that it is planning a new centre at nearby Pease Pottage. Action Medical Research for children is based at Vincent House in Horsham and for more than 60 years has been saving and changing lives through medical research, spending more than £110 million so far. Results and pictures of the pancake races were carried in last week’s Post. The DJ was Andy Lake and the compere was Dave Benson Phillips. Eleven mascots created mayhem led by Horsham FC’s Howie the Hornet and a new addition to the mascot line up in Buster the Search Dog, who won the Mascots Race at his first attempt, defeating creatures such as Nando’s Chicken and Horsham Council’s Ringo the Dragon in the process. This year 22 teams took part. The event was organised as usual by the Horsham Rotary Club, with support from main sponsor Ringwayand and Horsham District Council’s Event Team. The Rotary Club says it would welcome suggestions for any new events at the races next year. recent stint in the Jungle and Perri Kiely, who currently features on Celebs Go Dating, took 58 Fi Steps students through a warm up before teaching them two routines. This was followed by individual
photos with the stars, and a fun question and answer session which saw a vast range of topics covered, from jungle horrors to favourite footwear. The routines will be performed
in the annual Fi Steps show, Fierce, at the Hawth in September. Fi Steps is based at Tilgate, with weekly classes at Millais School in Horsham, where the workshop took place.
Residents are dismayed after a tractor tore down trees along the road which runs through their village. Villagers at Rowhook, near Horsham, have been told it was not a council decision. But who was responsible for the cutting remains a mystery to them. The work was carried out over two days last week, apparently to allow more room for the passage of larger vehicles along the route. Local resident Robert Jolly said: “It has always been such a scenic route but now it is more of a scene of devastation.” A local man who wishes to remain unnamed, said, “Lorries come along the road all the time and damage their wing mirrors so someone must have paid the man to remove the trees.” Another resident mentioned that heavy motor vehicles were not even meant to use the Rowhook Road but instead a longer and presumably a much more suitable route. Villagers report that the day after the incident there was a car crash along the same stretch of road where the tree chopping had taken place. Mr Jolly said: ““In all the 20 odd years I’ve lived here not once has there been a car accident. Now the day after this tractor tears apart our village there’s an accident – this whole debacle has brought nothing but negativity.” The locals are hoping the trees will be replaced and that beauty will be restored to the village, and have contacted police. Thanks for the chat
Thanks for chat Residents living alone got a double benefit of some company when firefighters spent a day on safety advice in the Holbrook area of Horsham. About one in three of those visited said they would have had no-one else to talk to that day. The experts were offering free home safety advice and support for those in their later years or living alone. They gave local residents home safety guidance, as well as providing advice on how to reduce the impact of social isolation and loneliness. Members of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were joined by Age UK, Horsham District Council’s Community Link and
Horsham Wellbeing teams, and West Sussex County Council’s Community Safety and Wellbeing team. Before the event 300 flyers were delivered to local residents with information on home safety visits, social isolation and Age UK’s help at home. On the day, the event reached more than 100 local residents and information about services, activities and other sources of support in the local area was offered to all. About 30 of the people that visited the event mentioned they would not have chatted to anyone else that day. The fire service conducted six home safety visits and fitted smoke alarms to nine homes
on the day, all as a direct result of discussions at the event that highlighted potential fire safety concerns. In addition, seven referrals were taken for future home safety visits. Firefighter Shaun Challis from the fire service Crewing Optimisation Group, who helped organise the event, said: “Many of the most vulnerable members of society are often the hardest to reach, so our event took our message directly to them, outside a local parade of shops. “This gave us the opportunity to talk to many residents, and identify a number of fire safety and social isolation concerns.”

Chance to meet a star at Riverside Walk A famous film star will be present when the fourth annual Riverside Walk at Horsham is held. Paddington Bear, Action Medical Research’s mascot, has been engaged to attend and pose for photos on July 15. His successful debut on the wide screen is to be followed in November this year with another film featuring the loveable little rascal. Walk organiser Horsham Town Community Partnership is asking those taking part to help support the charity, whose head office has been in Horsham since 1971. UK-wide children’s charity Action Medical Research celebrated 40 years with Paddington BearTM as its official mascot in 2016. The charity is currently funding research into conditions including prematurity, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions. Jane Apostolou, chair of the charity, said: “Paddington was a favourite of my children when we read his stories. I am sure he will be popular on July 15. Starting from the Rugby Club car park in Hammerpond Road, walkers and joggers will have the chance to complete the circular 13-mile route or enjoy just a part
of it. A free minibus will be waiting at selected points to take tired walkers back to their cars. A clockwise route will be followed with the first refreshment and toilet stop at Chesworth Farm before walking alongside the River Arun and Boldings Brook to reach Warnham Nature Reserve in time for lunch. A small band will entertain there. The next leg follows part of Chennells Brook and finishes at New House Farm in time for a short rest with tea and a slice of cake. Certificates will be presented to all finishers back at the Rugby Club and Paddington Bear™ will be on hand to help.

Dolly’s hits help fund raising team Katy welcomes move to give children more protection
The presentation
Katy Bourne
Dolly Parton’s greatest hits helped staff and residents at a care home raise money for a hospice. Croft Meadow in Steyning raised £540 for St Barnabas House in Worthing through holding various fundraising events including a Dolly Parton impersonator, bake sales, Halloween and Christmas fetes. Croft Meadow staff members Claire King and Rachael Dumbrill organised the events and presented a cheque to St Barnabas fundraising officer Mary Bye as she explained more about the work of the hospice. Croft Meadow manager Sharalee Thrumble said: “It’s been
great fun raising money over the past twelve months. We’ve had everything from a Dolly Parton impersonator and dancing, cake sales, sweet sales, a Halloween extravaganza, Christmas fete, an open day, Burns Night, at every event in the home we’ve had our St Barnabas buckets at the ready. We’re very much a community here at Croft Meadow and we love the opportunity to give something back to our local community. We are now asking our residents and Staff to vote on which Charity they would like to support this year.” Mary Bye community fundraising officer for St Barnabas said: “We are delighted that the resi-
dents and staff at Croft Meadow chose to fundraise for St Barnabas House throughout 2016. They raised a total of £540 from their activities, which is more than enough to pay for three whole nights of Hospice at Home care for a patient, allowing their carer to benefit from a good night’s sleep. Thank you from everyone at St Barnabas House.” Shaw healthcare, which runs Croft Meadow, provides services from comprehensive care packages through to low level support in the community for older people and adults with physical, sensory or mental health support needs. For more information about Shaw visit www.shaw.co.uk.
Children are to benefit from a £40 million Government package of measures to protect them from sexual abuse and trafficking. And the news has been welcomed by Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, who launched her own move two years ago to combat the problem in Sussex. Mrs Bourne said: “Child sexual abuse, exploitation and trafficking have a devastating impact on the lives of our children. These are crimes that are notoriously complex to prevent and prosecute so it’s right that more money is being directed into bringing offenders to justice, targeting online exploitation and protecting vulnerable children at risk of trafficking. “I am particularly pleased that £7.5 million is being spent on a ‘centre of expertise’ that will offer guidance and support to frontline professionals because intelligence is key to improving our response. “In 2015 I funded a Child
Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Analyst who takes an intelligence-led approach to identifying the immediate risks and what the emerging CSE challenges are. “This dedicated role is working directly with partners agencies to build a ‘rich picture’ of intelligence and identify where the greatest and most immediate risks might lie. “The analyst’s work is vital in helping Sussex Police target their resources in the right areas where disruption and prevention is most needed. Most importantly, it helps to keep our children safe.”

Record numbers seek help in rows Record caseload
Families in dispute are seeking mediation help in record numbers to settle their arguments. Horsham-based West Sussex Mediation Service reports that it has set another record for mediation referrals made over a twelve-month period. During the current financial year, which does not end until March 31, the charity has already handled 316 referrals from local residents in need of conflict resolution for a variety of family and community based disputes.
The group says the number could rise to as many as 350 when March ends, which would mean a 20% increase on the previous record, set in 2013-14. The organisation says that this year’s additional numbers further demonstrates the steadily growing awareness of the worth of mediation and the demand in the community for the charity’s services and expertise. The charity, based at Park House in North Street, Horsham, offers a wide range of mediation
services for individuals, groups and organisations. All of the charity’s mediators are trained volunteers who give their time and experience freely to help local people through, what are often, difficult and stressful situations. Nick Handley, WSMS Service Coordinator, said: “The rise in referrals shows that more people are becoming aware of the benefits of mediation. As well as our perennial community disputes around noise nuisance and antisocial behaviour, we are seeing a sharp upturn in enquiries from divorcing or separating couples with issues over finances or children. Our mediators are a fantastic group of selfless individuals who work tirelessly to help improve the lives of local residents and to work towards lasting resolutions to the issues presented.” “We are still able to provide our community mediation to West Sussex residents free of charge at the point of deliver, by putting great effort into our annual fundraising”, says Nick. The group is currently seeking to recruit a new treasurer for the start of the new financial year. Please call 01403 258900 or email info@wsms.org.uk today for further details.

Residents pay more tax for social care Residents of West Sussex will pay 2 per cent more in taxes to help maintain social care. It is part of a total rise of 3.95 per cent in the West Sussex County Council portion of council tax that will cost the average householder nearly £1 a week extra in 2017-18. The Tory-run council is at odds with the Tory Government over insufficient central taxation funding , along with many other local councils. The county budget accounts for the biggest part of council tax bills, which also include different charges for district and parish councils. The county budget from April will include an extra 2 per cent on council tax to help social care. There will also be a general council tax increase of 1.95 per cent, making a total of 3.95 per cent in council tax rises. The 3.95 increases is the equivalent of an extra 92 pence per week for the average Band D household. Measures to close a budget gap of £41.6m have been agreed including £16.8m in efficiencies and savings across a number of services, and the use
of £9.4m of reserves West Sussex Cabinet Member for Finance Jeremy Hunt said: “The demand on our services is increasingly going up, but unfortunately the money we are receiving from central government is going down. “Increases in council tax are now built into the government’s expectation of how services are funded so as well as our continuing drive for efficiencies, savings, and new
Increases in council tax are now built into the government’s expectation of how services are funded ... ways of working, we had little choice but to increase council tax in order to protect frontline services. “But we have kept the increase as low as possible for our residents and I believe this budget provides excellent value for money.”

Moving talk from Hell on Earth survivor Survivor Stephen tells his tale

camps. Mr Frank recounted his wartime under the Nazis in the Netherlands, how his father was tortured and died at Auschwitz, and how he was incarcerated and sent to Terezín concentration camp, which he somehow managed to
survive. Farlington School’s Year 10 historians heard his talk when they attended an Amnesty International Workshop at Chichester Cathedral. Farlington’s head of history Daniel Cronin said: “His story is an incredible testament to his attitude to survive in life. He tells his story for other generations to understand and to help avoid the atrocities inflicted on so many. The girls were very moved and felt privileged to have heard his story first-hand. The workshop was a valuable experience and the girls gained a greater understanding of Amnesty International and its work safeguarding human rights throughout the world.” During the workshop, the girls discussed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with students from other schools in the region. The students learnt a great deal about our expected rights and charted some of the areas of the world where those rights are being denied. The girls looked at source material and discussed the implications of the 30-point My Rights Passport with recent political events in mind. They also took a tour of Chichester Cathedral, noticing ‘decadent’ artworks on display that would have been banned in Nazi Germany from artists Feibusch and Brandenburger.
Danced for good cause Stepping into it
Villagers took steps to support a cancer charity in its work. Organisers say it was another successful night for the Billingshurst Macmillan group when it held its latest Barn Dance at Billingshurst Village Hall. A total of £415 was raised by the 80-plus people who attended through ticket sales and the raffle.
A spokesperson for the group said: “The music and calling was provided by the excellent ‘Stock Brokers Belt’ who needed plenty of patience ensuing all the right steps were covered in the right order. It was a real fun evening and there are plans to repeat the night later this year. Thank you to all who attended for making it such a fun and successful event.”

Land owners lined up for millionaire cash crop Fields of gold
More land owners stand to become millionaires overnight with pressure being exerted on councillors to release nearly 30 per cent extra space for housing. Some owners who bought agricultural land at about £2,000 an acre years ago ago can expect to sell to developers at about £1million an acre once planning approval is granted. And the likelihood of that happening has increased with a ruling from a planning inspector on land right on Horsham’s borders. Inspector Jonathon Bore has insisted that 28.25 per cent more houses a year than councillors have previously agreed should be provided to solve the problem of
a shortage that has emerged in recent years. While the decision has brought protests from countryside campaigners , land owners could find themselves converting relatively cheap land into fields of gold once planning approval is granted. A farmer near Henfield recently took a stand by refusing to sell to developers, despite the fact it would have made him relatively rich. But other land owners might be tempted. Mid Sussex Council, which borders Horsham district, stated at a planning inquiry that the proposed housing requirement of 800 homes a year up to 2013 would be the point above which the advantages of additional
housing provision would be significantly outweighed by the disadvantages. Mr Bore said the Mid Sussex approach was similar to analysis found sound at Horsham, Crawley, Chichester and Arun but circumstances in the housing market had changed. He said in a preliminary report: “ I consider that Horsham and Crawley are the closest comparators, being in the same Northern West Sussex Housing Market Area as Mid Sussex. But he added : “In the case of Mid Sussex both the long term affordability trend and the recent sharp deterioration point to the necessity for effective action to increase planned supply to improve affordability.” He said in conclusion: “The five year housing land supply will need to be calculated against the minimum housing requirement of 1,026 dpa (dwellings a year) once the site and land identification process has been undertaken.” Michael Brown, Mid Sussex Campaign for the Protection of Rural England representative, said: “Many of those who at parish level embraced the Government’s promise of localism, and put in so much extended effort to develop neighbourhood plans, will find that they need to revise their plans and release more land for development. They will view the recommendations of the Inspector as a real slap in the face.”

Changes for Horsham’s big Midnight Walk All change for Midnight Walkers
Men and children are being invited to take part in Horsham’s charity Midnight Walk for the first time. Organisers St Catherine’s Hospice have introduced changes as the charity prepares for its tenth year of the popular event. Three new walking routes have been brought in and the chance for men and children over 10 to take part for the first time. Taking place in Horsham on June 10, the walk is sponsored by Gatwick Airport and starts at 10pm. It offers a choice of seven, 13 or 20 mile walking routes.
Peter Kersley, 31, daughter, Megan, 13 and his motherin- law, Diane, have already signed up. Peter said: “My wife, Lauren, was cared for by St Catherine’s in our home and at the hospice. “Sadly, it’s not until you need the hospice’s care that you realise how special it is. I Can’t wait to walk alongside hundreds of other people to help raise money so that St Catherine’s can be there to provide its special care for others. By coincidence, this year’s walk falls on mine and Lauren’s wedding anniversary, and I can’t think of a better way to remember my wonderful wife.” Last year nearly 400 women walked overnight to raise an impressive £65,000, but St Catherine’s is hoping even more will pull on walking shoes to help beat that figure. Melanie Wrightson, Community Engagement Manager at Gatwick Airport, said: “We
Sadly, it’s not until you need the hospice’s care that you realise how special it is are really proud to be sponsoring such a special year of St Catherine’s Midnight Walk. We can’t wait to help our local hospice celebrate, and we hope you will join us for what is already shaping up to be a truly fabulous evening.” To sign up online go to :www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk or call St Catherine’s Events Team on 01293 447364. People signing up by April 21 receive a special early bird entry rate of £10. After that it will cost £15. All entry fees include a free T-shirt, finisher’s breakfast and medal.

CAGNE public AGM to air growing Local garage donates over £4,500 to SERV Sussex threats to communities
A current Government consultation on airspace policy seeks to make radical changes that would hand over unprecedented levels of power to those that profit from aviation growth at the expense of communities they over fly, says campaign group CAGNE, Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions. The contentious consultation,
and other key issues relating to Gatwick airspace, will be discussed with representatives of the aviation industry at the CAGNE Annual General Meeting this Friday (3rd March) at Warnham Village Hall, Warnham, RH12 3RH, which is open to all members of the public. Guest speakers are Andy Sinclair from Gatwick Airport and
James Walker of the Civil Aviation Authority. The Government consultation, Airspace Policy Framework, which runs until 25th May, suggests that as long as the sponsor, i.e. Gatwick Airport, consults and gives communities options, they will be permitted to make decisions about airspace changes such as Noise Preferential Routes, which have safeguarded rural communities that have not been over flown for more than 40 years. “The consultation outcome is a potential capitulation. It could give the aviation industry almost total control over the lives of communities they over fly. The Government is suggesting that the only form of appeal would be through launching expensive Judicial Reviews that require funds exceeding £100,000. The appeal process would also appear to have been made even harder due to a proposed CAA tick box consultation process, and by the criteria for an application to the Secretary of State for his/her intervention being raised so high that around Gatwick we would probably have no chance of intervention. These have to be challenged,” said Chair of CAGNE , Sally Pavey. Other topics to be discussed at the AGM will cover the ‘fair and equitable’ distribution of noise from arrivals; the intent to move the final approach closer to communities near to the runway with significant implications at night; an Arrival Review document that would show areas over flown by aircraft as an aid for estate agents even though these areas receive no compensation or are acknowledged by Gatwick as impacted by noise; and continued dissatisfaction at the Gatwick ‘Noise’ web page that discriminates against the elderly, visually impaired and those that do not have access to a computer. A long called for review of departures at Gatwick will also be discussed as a result of Gatwick introducing concentrated flights on all departure routes in May 2014 with seemingly very little consultation. The CAA, using ‘noise averages’ that do not accurately reflect the impact of noise on rural communities, to approve them. “CAGNE appeals to residents to seize the opportunity to attend the AGM. This is a rare chance to speak directly to, and to challenge, senior executives from Gatwick and Government. We cannot be complaisant because Government’s stance on the ‘modernising’ of airspace is full of risks for communities affected by aircraft noise. We must maintain a voice and not just be seen as an inconvenient part of the process for Government and the aviation industry to do what is easier for them, said Sally Pavey. “CAGNE also understands that there are movements backstage in Parliament to bring Gatwick 2 back onto the agenda despite the overwhelming evidence that it would be in no one’s interest except those who would profit financially or benefit personally.”
The team at Horsham’s Station Garage announced that they have raised over £4,500 for their charity of the year ‘SERV Sussex’ - a service run by emergency rider volunteers that provides night time transportation of blood, blood products and other urgent medical items for NHS hospitals across the county. Throughout 2016, the familyrun Skoda dealership undertook a number of fundraising activities to raise money for SERV Sussex. Activities included a £1 donation for every MOT the garage completed, a team bake sale, held at The Forum in Horsham town, and a charity skydive - which saw Paul Garner, Holly Salmon and Colin Leitch jump from 15,000 ft (the highest possible altitude which to parachute from in the UK) - to name but a few. Station Garage is now inviting Sussex residents to nominate any community groups, charities or schools they feel could benefit from fundraising support as
the dealership launches its 2017 Charity of the Year campaign. To nominate a charity or community project, email events@ stationgarage.skoda.co.uk, with details of the charity, your contact name and telephone number and why the charity should be chosen. Any charity/community project can be nominated, as long as they are registered with the charity commission and operate within the local Horsham area. James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage in Horsham, commented: “We’re thrilled with how much we’ve been able to raise for SERV Sussex. The charity provides a vital service in our region and helps save thousands of lives each year. I’m really looking forward to helping another local charity this year and highly encourage as many community groups, schools or charities to put themselves forward. Our team are ready and motivated to help raise vital funds for a deserving cause in 2017.”

Business Martin Read - Reporter Horsham’s Anchor Tap pub in East Street has just celebrated its first anniversary. Dark Star Brewery Director James Cuthbertson telling the District Post: “It’s been a fantastic first year, really good, so we’re delighted!” Pubs are closing across the country with some familiar Horsham watering holes disappearing, so what is the Anchor Tap’s secret of success? James says: “We wanted to add something a bit different to East Street and took great pains to restore the character of our Victorian building with attractive windows and a stunning
floor. Our research suggested that customers would welcome pleasant surroundings and real ale is also much appreciated. We’ve just tried to create a better place to enjoy a drink and some food, with sensible prices in a nice atmosphere.” The Anchor Tap was first licensed in the 1890s, when it was part of Market Square’s Anchor Hotel and was subsequently run by local brewers King & Barnes as The Anchor. After its demise as a pub it became a soft drinks bar and youth information centre and then a café, before Partridge Green’s Dark Star Brewery reinstated the premises as the Anchor Tap. rural businesses grow West Sussex County Council has announced that there’s still funding available for small rural businesses and community groups to apply for with the LEADER grants scheme. Farmers, foresters and communities, based in rural areas of West Sussex, Lewes district and Hayling Island can benefit from the grant funding, totalling around £2.6 million, until September 2018, and possibly beyond. Grants are available for capital investments for projects that will create jobs and grow the rural economy. West Sussex County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “The LEADER fund is an important source of grants available to our many rural communities. It’s there to benefit and boost businesses and community groups. “We know from the previous LEADER programme that this funding has been so very helpful for people developing their businesses and has been much appreciated. “If you think you’d benefit from a grant, maybe you want to recruit new staff or grow your business, then I would encourage you to apply. Who knows where that extra bit of funding could take you and your business?”
Under the current scheme, a total of £380,000 has so far been awarded to 13 projects in this region, creating 25 full time jobs over the next three years. One such project is local wine producer Tinwood Wine Estate, near Chichester, who invested their grant in the construction of three vineyard lodges - giving visitors the choice of an overnight stay and a five star view of the vines. Estate owner Art Tukker said: “We first saw the concept in Australia and New Zealand and thought it would be wonderful to bring back here. Without the funding, our business plan would never have been able to get off the ground.” The owners of Holmbush Farm, near Crawley, were another successful applicant who used their grant to purchase a forestry harvester head with an on-board computer, plus hardstanding at their wood-yard. The project has increased the volume of woodchip and green waste able to be processed and created an additional full-time job. For more information and for details on how to apply, visit the Business West Sussex website at www.businesswestsussex.co.uk or call the LEADER team on 0330 22 28001.

The 4th hugely enjoyable and successful Equinox Beer and Cider festival took place at the Drill Hall in Horsham over the last weekend of February, organised by the North Sussex branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. Starting the festival on the Friday evening for the first time was a highly popular change, with a great crowd in, while the Saturday afternoon session continued to be the most popular and again sold out. Saturday evening was also well attended, and featured a quality performance by local stars Small Town Kids, rounding off the event superbly. The event featured all the local brewers and cider makers, plus a number of the new brewers that have opened in recent years, plus some sourced from further afield
by our main Festival sponsor, Dark Star and their Horsham pub, the Anchor Tap. Voting for Beer and Cider of the festival was as close as ever, with 48 of the 53 beers getting votes, which is a true testament to the high quality of the beer and cider that is essential in today’s vibrant market. This year all three winners repeated successes from previous years, and we will only have short journeys to present their awards. Light Beer of the Festival went to Panzific, the latest excellent new beer from Top Notch who brew in Haywards Heath. Kissingate, from Lower Beeding, are always a big festival favourite and reclaimed the Dark Beer of the Festival crown with another gorgeous new beer, Blackeyed Susan, following up their wins in

2015 and runner up position in 2016. Wobblegate, from Bolney, dominated the Cider of the Festival votes, taking first and second places with its Pink and Summer Breeze, reclaiming the award from Turner’s Hill based Village Green that pipped it last year. Our festival charity this year was the Samaritans Horsham and Crawley branch, and we are delighted that donations of money, beer tokens and unwanted glasses raised £645, a new record for the event. Their presence and support was greatly appreciated. Huge thank you to all the volunteers, musicians and sponsors, and particularly to Gareth of Beer Essentials, Sam at the Malt Shovel and Duncan at the Anchor Tap for their invaluable support with ticket sales, and to Rob at the Drill Hall for his help over the weekend. The Manfreds will be performing on stage on Saturday 11 March at 7.30pm, as a part of this years ‘Makin’ Tracks’ Tour. The ‘60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands of the era. Their numerous hits were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - an unusual, but winning combination of playing style and substance.
As a result, the group’s records have a timeless quality and, some 55 years on, The Manfreds, with original front man, Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of Jazz and Blues covers from their new album
the day? With special guest stars Butch and Ramsbottom. Expect magic, music and mayhem with buckets full of audience participation. A spectacular treat for Sooty fans old and new – plus a chance to meet Richard and Sooty after the show! “Works like a dream – your children will love it” – The Guardian “Absolutely Brilliant” – netmums Tickets are available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

All Grown Up in a Flash
Flash, the hand reared baby sloth at Drusillas Park, has taken a big step towards independence, by sleeping overnight at the zoo for the first time on her own. For the last 11 months, Head Keeper, Mark Kenward, and Zoo Keeper, Gemma Romanis, have been sharing Flash’s around the clock care after her mother sadly passed away shortly after she was born. The pair even took turns to
take the orphaned infant home with them; two-toed sloths are a nocturnal species so require interaction and regular feeds during the night. However, Gemma and Mark decided the time had come to cut the apron strings. After settling Flash into her new off-show activity pen, over the last few weeks, and slowly reducing the amount of contact, Flash finally
stayed at the zoo overnight for the first time on her own. Gemma commented: “It was a bit nerve-racking to say the least but she coped brilliantly and I don’t think either of us predicted it would go quite so smoothly. For the first five nights. Mark and I visited her to see how she was getting on and although she was pleased to see us, it was clear she was quite calm and comfortable. “Although I do really miss her, I am so proud to see her confidence growing and her adapting so well. It means we have achieved, successfully, what we set out to do and although it’s been an incredibly tough year, it’s also been an enormous privilege to have been part of and to work alongside Mark. I’m very proud of this achievement and it is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life both personally and professionally” By the end of February, the team hope to have introduced a new friend to Flash. A female sloth is to arrive from Amersfoort Zoo in Holland and the pair will share an enclosure. Gemma explained that she hopes that Flash will learn more about being a sloth: “All being well, Flash and the new female will settle well and are expected to be on-show to the public by Easter.” Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am. Joggers tested in crazy car park challenge Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers
The strangest event possible saw three ‘crazy’ Joggers run the Multi Story Marathon in Worthing; a race which involves running up and down a car park 71 times. With ascents equal to Ben Nevis, Peter Thirkettle, Graham Clarke and Gemma Baker completed it in 4.15.20, 4.39.02 and 5.22.21 respectively. In the slightly more unusual surroundings of Thorpe Park,
Emma Comber continued her fine form finishing in 1.39.06, along with Will Green 1.45.21 Helen Varcoe 1.51.11 Kirsty Anstee Brown 1.54.47 Sharon Burchett 1.56.30 Sarah Bargman 1.59.03 Julie Hill 1.59.03 Fiona Clifton 2.11.18 Fiona Lear 2.22.11 Lisa Bowler 2.27.22 Steph Charman 2.35.00 Edna Clark 2.36.45 and Linda Morris 2.41.59. Soft goals and outstanding keeping deny Horsham
Horsham’s goalscoring touch failed them South League – Premier – Division 1 London Wayfarers 2 - 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their bid for survival in South League Premier Division 1, Horsham missed out on the opportunity to steal a march on the team just above them, soft goals again heralding their downfall. To make things worse, the two
goals were conceded early, giving Horsham a steep hill to climb to grab the much needed three points, but that would have been entirely possible if the gods had smiled. Horsham were without player-coach Dom Male, getting to grips with newly delivered fatherhood, but the defence and midfield were otherwise intact, yet caught napping. With Horsham subsequently in the ascendancy, this season’s signing Ellis Woolley reduced the deficit to 2-1 at the break with his 12th
goal in club colours. And, on resumption, Horsham came out strongly and had the lion’s share of possession, only to be thwarted by the home goalkeeper, a Sean Pearcy screamer being spectacularly denied before a jinking John Burroughs attempt was also nullified. Then Cirdec Atkinson was narrowly unable to connect with a Freddie Campbell supply ahead of Joey Humphreys’ inputs that would have been converted on most occasions. Frustrated Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “Their keeper has got it in for us – we bring out the very best in him! In addition to earlier top saves, he pulled off another miracle to deny a Woolley rocket destined for the top left corner. It’s puzzling – he’s been letting in three goals a game, but we’ve only got past him twice in two encounters this season!” Fortunately, results elsewhere were favourable, but Horsham remain tenth, with, like most of their nearest rivals in the table, a game in hand. With five games to play, three of which are against teams also uncertain of staying in the division, Horsham return home tomorrow (Saturday) to play seventh-placed Old Cranleighans, who lost 3-0 to London Edwardians last Saturday but beat Horsham by the same score at Battersea Park in November.
Battling Horsham upset by high scoring Londoners South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham Ladies 1 - 3 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham conceded an early goal but fought back well, only to be thwarted in the second half. A short corner in the early stages gave the south London visitors the lead, followed by substantial possession during which further goals might have materialised in the absence of resolute defending, Horsham doing well to keep them out. But, Horsham clawed themselves back into the game, a close range free kick going well wide – as did an earlier short corner – before Charlotte “CJ” White converted a similar set-piece to level the score. Then, Horsham Captain, goalkeeper Hannah Simpson dived full length to nullify a Tulse Hill attack to keep honours even at the break.
Horsham resumed in fighting mode, quickly earning a short corner, although in the fifthminute action returned to the other end, Simpson saving two shots, the second of which was not cleared, allowing the ball to be banged home with the keeper on the ground. Alex Malzer immediately retaliated but her shot was negated, ahead of fast on the break Tulse Hill backhanding high over the bar. Horsham were competing hard, with the whole team running and running, but two free hits came to nought, as did two short corners. Another Horsham corner was knocked away until Tulse Hill twisted the knife with their third goal. Horsham made further inroads and never gave up but it was not their day, Tulse Hill maintaining their record as the league’s highest scorer. Jane Denman, Horsham Team Manager said: “We didn’t quite get going today and they were so well drilled.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham
visit Oxford to take on the University ladies, with whom they drew 2-2 at Broadbridge Heath in October. Horsham remain seventh in the table, one place above Oxford, who drew with bottom club Woking last Saturday.

Junior Football Round Up Roffey U18 2 - 1 Barnham Trojans U18 Goals from David Wood and Alex Barker ensured that Roffey U18 are still on course for a league and cup double. Barker reacted quickest to a loose ball in the Barnham penalty area and found the back of the empty net, Wood then scored from a well-placed direct free kick from just outside the box to double the lead. Barnham created very few scoring chances and keeper Sam Chantrill was rarely troubled. However he was unable to stop Barnham’s only shot which bobbled awkwardly past him. Manager Andy Chantrill said, “It was an outstanding performance with every player at 9 out of 10”. Horsham Sparrows U15 Girls – Sparrows suffered heartbreak in the cup semi-final, going out to local rivals Oakwood on penalties 3-2. The girls tried a different formation and started well with Charley going close before Tyla gave them a deserved lead just before half-time with a curling long-range following a cleared corner. The second half was tight and the girls had a couple more
chances before Oakwood equalised following a controversial free-kick. It remained 1-1 through a tense extra-time and despite a good start on penalties our final effort was saved meaning Sparrows lost 3-2. There were strong performances from Emily and Bella in central defence, Melissa in midfield, Abigail in goal and a good contribution from Alessia from the bench. Girl of the game was Tyla. Horsham Sparrows Women’s Team – League champions Oakwood started strongly and took the lead in the first five minutes with a well struck shot from 25 yards The rest of the half was an entertaining well tussle with both sides having chances and strong tackles from each side The second half saw an excellent midfield battle with few chances until Oakwood scored a second midway through the period. Sparrows knuckled down and played some beautiful football leading to Imy scoring a terrific goal with five minutes left. Despite constant pressure, in the last few minutes, Oakwood hung on to secure the win.
Palmer prepares for the new F1 season Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor Southwater based driver Jolyon Palmer’s F1 team, Renault Sport, have started testing ahead of the new F1 season that has its opening race on March 26 at the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s GP Circuit. Renault’s new car for the season, the R.S.17, has no carry over parts from last season’s car and is being put through its paces at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Palmer has a new race partner this year having been joined at Renault by German driver Nico Hülkenberg, who replaces the departed Kevin Magnussen.
After the seasons opener in Melbourne, the teams compete in Shanghai two weeks later before the long 20 race F1 season finally ends in November at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; the British Grand Prix at Silverstone is scheduled for around midseason on July 16. After his initial test of the new car, in which his best lap time was 1min 24.139secs, Palmer commented, “I’ve really enjoyed driving the car today. The downforce is a massive change; it’s completely different from last year. It takes a little bit of getting used to but it’s actually a lot more enjoyable to drive.”

Bronze medal for Horsham pair at British Tournament Amy Tolhurst & Maddie Kent during their bronze medal routine
Horsham’s pair with their British Gold Medals Gymnastics Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham Gymnastics Centre’s Sports Acrobatic squad had fifteen gymnasts competing at the prestigious British Tournament with all finishing highly placed, especially the Women’s Pair of Amy Tolhurst and Maddie Kent, who earned a superb bronze medal. The competition - held at Stoke-on-Trent’s Fenton Manor Sports Centre - attracted over
200 of the very best acrobatic gymnasts in the UK from 24 of the top clubs, with Horsham having one of the largest squads at the competition. After competing in the 13-19 years Women’s Pairs on Saturday afternoon, and then again on Sunday morning, Amy Tolhurst and Maddie Kent were placed third in Sunday afternoon’s final to earn them the bronze medal. This was a tremendous achievement by the pair on such a big stage, with a large crowd in

attendance, and up against very highly ranked competition. Horsham Gymnastics Centre is one of the top clubs in the country and its reputation was further enhanced with sixth-placed finishes from both Ben Ratcliffe and Natalie O’Hara in the 12-18 years Mixed Pairs competition and Zoe Shubert and Zoe Gaudiano in the 12-18 years Women’s Pairs. Just outside a top-six finish were Ella Dronfield, Myla Kettel and Alexis O’Hara who finished seventh in the 12-18 Women’s
Group. Francesca Clark, Matilda Tester and Pheobe Rochead who came tenth in the 11-16 Women’s Group and Georgia Brock,, Ella Nelson and Lily Garrard, who were also competing in the 11-16 Women’s Group, finished eleventh. Horsham’s Head Acro Gymnastics coach Ali Harmer said, “I am so proud of all the gymnasts, they conducted themselves superbly well in a tiring and high-pressure competition. It was great to see Amy and Maddie on the winners rostrum after competing with the best in the country and I hope that this is just the start of a number of medals at national level for the whole squad. I would like to recognise the huge contribution my fellow Horsham coach Ellie Stewart-Croker has made to all our gymnasts and I also thank club directors Steve and Mary Barritt for their support. As ever, none of the success would be possible without the continuing commitment shown by our gymnasts’ parents who bring their children to and from training many times a week as well as travelling the country with them for our competitions.” This was another big competition in which Horsham showed that they are not far off taking medals consistently at the large national events. The Horsham Acro Squad will now be heading back to Stoke for the NDP Finals in May before travelling to the Echo Arena in Liverpool for the British Championship Series in July and then, once again, to Stoke for the prestigious Pat Wade Classic later in the year.
Young Hornets crowned champions in debut season
U15 Hornets are Champions Arun & Chichester League C Division Shoreham & Adur U15 0 – 10 Horsham Youth U15 Junior Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Horsham Youth U15s have wrapped up the Arun & Chichester Division C League title with a resounding victory away at Shoreham & Adur. The young Hornets boast a 100% league record from their 12 matches, giving them an 8 point
advantage over their nearest rivals, Selsey. In this their first season, the team has excelled under the management duo of Adam Hartley and Paul Brown by dominating their matches, scoring 75 goals scored and conceding a meagre 10, and this match was to be no dif-
ferent. The first half gave no indication of what the final outcome would be with Horsham understandably looking a bit nervous and shaky; this despite a very early lead from a Louis Hartley goal. Playing against the strong wind Horsham dominated the play but could not convert the pressure into goals. Kieran Bonner gave the scoreline a better resemblance of the balance of play when he doubled the lead just before the break. Horsham were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and with the wind at their backs, Jake Relleen scored two quick goals for a 4-0 lead that secured the league title with much of the half remaining. In the strong blustery wind, Max Laker’s free kick floated fortuitously over the Shoreham ‘keeper and into the net for Horsham’s fifth. Kieran Bonner then put the game totally out of reach of a Shoreham come back when he hit 3 goals in a matter of minutes; taking his tally for the day to 4 goals and his team to 8-0. Josh Hall and Jamie Boniface completed the rout and the Hornets youngsters were left to celebrate as league champions.
Bears well beaten at leaders Haywards Heath SCFL Premier Division Haywards Heath Town 4 - 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Earlier in the season, Broadbridge Heath became the first team to defeat the highflying Haywards Heath Town when Tiago Andrade was on target for the only goal of the game. Since then Town have continued to impress at the top of the division, with just 3 defeats, while Andrade has left and after a short spell at Horsham has moved into the opposition dugout. On a cold blustery afternoon, the home side made a perfect start taking the lead with only 2 minutes played when the Bears defence failed to clear their lines and Callum Saunders hammered the ball past Michael Chester. The Bears gradually got into the game and should have drawn level midway through the half when the ball was played in from the left to Jake Holmes but his effort went just wide of the woodwork. Despite Town having the majority of possession, the score remained 1-0 at the break. The second half started even quicker than the first with regards to goals when Trevor McCreadie beat Chester with a header into the corner of the net within a minute of the restart. Chester then made a double save but despite his efforts, the ball came out to Jamie Weston who hammered it into the roof of the net for his teams 3rd in the 54th minute. Town were rampant at this stage and added a 4th goal in the 60th minute and it was Weston again 15 yards out who volleyed the ball into the bottom corner. The Bears were unlucky not to pull a goal back in the 68th minute when Holmes got up well but his header came off the crossbar and minutes later Dean Wright dragged a shot wide when well positioned. With time running out Town showed their desire to keep a clean sheet as Niam Rouane made a block on the line before a combination of James Shaw and George Hayward managed to block out the follow-up. The teams meet again on the March 7 in the semifinal of the Peter Bentley Cup at Steyning while tomorrow (Saturday 4) Heath host Chichester City at the Leisure Centre.

Three points for Hornets as Tony runs riot Tony Nwachukwu grabs the second goal
The energetic Scott Harris had a solid game
Photos by John Lines Ryman League South Division Horsham 2 – 0 CorinthianCasuals Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor
After surviving a number of squandered goalscoring opportunities from the visitors Corinthian-Casuals, Horsham - Tony Nwachukwu in particular
- struck in quick succession to record a much needed 3 points. Second half substitute Nwachukwu scored twice in 3 minutes, on what was the speedy Horsham forward’s 250th appearance for the club, moving the Hornets up two places to fourteenth in the league table. In attempt to stop the slide manager Dom Di Paola had brought in another new recruit in the week, the mutitalented experienced midfielder, Taser Hassan, who went straight into the starting eleven. Casuals are in the running for a play-off place and showed why by quickly settling into their stride. In the opening few minutes Shaun Okojie had an effort on goal blocked and then immediately headed straight at Josh Pelling with the goal gaping. A few minutes later it was the turn of Ben Cheklit to be wayward as he fired a shot way over the crossbar when at the very least he should have made Pelling work. Again a chance fell to Okojie but this time the Casuals’ forwards miss was more to do with some good defending from Ash Jones rather than player error. Horsham’s first effort on goal came from debutant Hassan who after a great run saw his shot saved by visiting keeper Danny Bracken. Casuals, however, were having the better of the play and Pelling had to be at his best to save a header from the unmarked Mu Maan and then just before half time the same pair were involved, again Pelling reacted well to save from Maan. The second 45 started in the
same vein as the first with Casuals on the front foot and Mahrez Bettache was denied an early goal by good defending from Steve Metcalf. With the game leaning heavily in favour of the visitors, Di Paola put on Darren Boswell and Nwachukwu and it proved to be a masterstroke with immediate positive results. Within a minute of being on Nwachukwu came close to scoring from Hassan’s through ball although at the other end from the counter attack Maan produced the miss of the match when with an open goal in front of him he shot wide from a few yards out. The glaring miss was fully punished when a few minutes later Nwachukwu latched onto a mistake from Casual’s Terry Murray before slotting past ‘keeper Bracken. Three minutes later and it was two, and again it was Nwachukwu who did the damage. Tom Lawley finished a fine run down the wing with an equally fine low cross that Nwachukwu controlled first time before firing a fierce shot under Bracken. The double substitution, and subsequent goals, had knocked the stuffing out of Casuals and the game turned the way of Horsham who comfortably controlled the remaining 25 minutes much to the delight of the Lardy Army who had gone a good few weeks without a lot to cheer. Those same supporters will hope that the win will be repeated tomorrow, Saturday 4, when Horsham travel to Kent to play relegation threatened Chatham Town.
Horsham’s Neil Boniface third at Brighton Half Neil Boniface at the Brighton Half Marathon
Athletics Dave Smith - Sports Editor Last weekend saw the 27th annual running of the Brighton Half Marathon, a race in which Horsham Joggers’ stalwart, Neil Boniface, continued his good recent form with a superb third place finish. The Brighton Half has become one of the major races in the South, and one of the most popular in the country, and this year attracted 12500 runners as well as many thousands of cheering spectators. All a far cry from the first event in 1990 that had under 200 runners and went fairly much unnoticed. The race is run by HIV charity The Sussex Beacon and starts at Madeira Drive, taking in the Palace Pier, the Royal Pavilion, the Old Steine, Hove Lagoon and the Peace Statue before finishing back at Madeira Drive. This year, as well as the men’s and ladies
races, there was a wheelchair event, which was won by Rob Smith in 1:14:23. The starting klaxon was sounded by Brighton superstar DJ Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, who then joined the race himself. Neil Boniface’s third place was secured with a finishing time of 1:08:55 which was was narrowly behind second placed Stuart Hawkes in 1:08:43 and the winner, South London’s Jonathan Tipper, who broke the tape in 1:08:37. The winner of the previous four Brighton Half Marathon’s, Paul Matelletti, was unable to run through injury but was at the finish line to applaud the runners home. The womens race was won by Elanor Davis, in a course record 1:14:26; Elanor having made the long trip up from Cornwall to compete. She was followed home by Emily Proto in 1:21:27 and last year’s winner Sarah Hill in 3rd place with 1:21:34.

YM hit six as they look for a strong finish SCFL Premier Division Hailsham Town 0 - 9 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor After two goalless draws in their previous two games, Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland would have been looking to see a goal or two away at the divisions whipping boys Hailsham Town, in the end, it turned out to be six goals and a resounding victory. After a poor run of form and an inconsistent season marred with injuries, YM have in the last few games started to at last look the solid unit of old and although a promotion challenge is beyond them this year manager Buckland will have his sights set on a late push up the table. The increased optimism about the remainder of the season is supported by the recent good form of central defensive pair Charlie Cooke and Guy Harding, who at present are an impressive barrier in front of ‘keeper Mark Fox’s goal. YM took the lead in the 11th minute when Hailsham’s keeper Sheldon Levett could only palm Alex Gathern’s cross to the feet of Phil Johnson who had an open goal to tap the ball into. Just how another 25 minutes passed without a YM goal was a miracle as they peppered the home goal continuously. Finally, the next goal came when Johnson went on a powerful run before finding the unmarked Nick Sullivan, who had a simple tap-in to score. With the floodgates now open the same two players were involved in the third goal, this time after some hesitant goalkeeping Sullivan pulled the ball back for Johnson to score. Then with a minute of the first 45 to play the game was over as a contest when the lively Johnson crossed to the far post for defender Gathern to make it 4-0. The second half started with YM in rampant mood, and due to the lack of action at the other end of the pitch, Gathern had plenty opportunities to get forward. The fifth came courtesy of Schaaf who converted after Johnson’s effort had hit the post and it was the YM striker who with 6 minutes to play hit his second and his team’s sixth when his header dropped into the net. So a far better day for YM, six goals and their third clean sheet running. Yes, there are far better teams than Hailsham, in fact, the league table shows there are no worse however in a stuttering season that promised so much back in August this may be the start of a good run that ends in a higher finishing position for YM than looked likely a month or so ago. YM host Lancing tomorrow (Saturday 4). Lancing sit a place behind YM in the middle of the table with 2 games more played.
