A 100-year-old war hero and Britain’s oldest surviving Olympian has been awarded a top

civic honour. Ex bomber pilot Bill Lucas, who lives in Cowfold, has been awarded a West Sussex Certiﬁcate of Achievement, an honour presented only a handful of times each year. Bill ﬂew 81 life-threatening missions during World War II as

a wartime pilot of heavy bombers and a path ﬁnder and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his coolness and courage. He also represented Great Britain at the 1948 Olympics in London competing in the 5,000 metres and has the honour of being the country’s oldest Olym-

pian. Bill has been President of the Belgrave Harriers three times, after spending many years developing future athletes. Bill said: “I’m quite honoured really. It’s unexpected.” He was given the Certiﬁcate of Achievement on Friday of last

week by Susan Pyper, LordLieutenant of West Sussex, and Pat Arculus, Chairman of West Sussex County Council. They were joined by Lionel Barnard, County Councillor for Henﬁeld and Vice Chairman of the County Council, who nominated Bill for the award. Cont pg 5

The number of apprentices in Horsham has grown almost ﬁve times faster than the national average. The news came as young people, including some from Horsham district, gathered for this week’s West Sussex Apprenticeship Graduation ceremony at Chichester. In Horsham district the number of apprentices has risen 9.4 per cent from 659 to 721 in a year. The national average is only 1.9

per cent. The year-on-year growth of new apprenticeships in the Coast to Capital area, which takes in West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and other parts of Surrey and East Sussex, is 8.7 percent compared to a national average of 1.9. Schools have paid attention to highlighting the possibility of apprenticeships for those not wanting to pursue University and a lot of 16-18-year-olds have taken the opportunity to earn

while they learn. All of the regions have seen a rise except in Worthing where there were 50 fewer new apprentices in 2015/16. Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “We have a hugely talented population in West Sussex so it is signiﬁcant to see more and more people and using apprenticeships to enhance these skills and turn them into a profession. “We will be looking more closely at Worthing over the next year to make more people aware of the number of opportunities which are already available in their area. We will also continue to promote apprenticeships in other regions alongside the district and borough councils.” One of the areas of growth was people starting apprenticeships at the age of 25 or above as this increased by 15 percent from 5,079 to 5,847. The biggest area of apprenticeships continues to be in Health, Public Services and Care which had 3,694 new apprenticeships in 2015/16. But there has also been a substantial increase in the Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies with a 45 percent increase from 1,301 in 2014/15 to 1,884 in 2015/16.

Investigation after gas explosion An investigation is under way after a gas explosion at Horsham market led to two people being taken to hospital. One man suffered suspected flash burns to his face and neck and was treated at East Surrey Hospital but no members of the public were injured. Experts are investigating the cause of the explosion, which happened about 11am. Ambulance crews attended the scene. A spokeswoman for Horsham District Council said: “The council can confirm that there was a gas explosion at the Olly’s Fish Shack market stall in Horsham’s Carfax on the morning of Thursday 2 March. “Emergency services attended the incident and the owner and one employee were taken to hospital. Horsham District Council’s first response was to ensure the area was safe. The council’s Environmental Health team, who were at the scene, engaged a gas engineer to secure the site. The council is continuing its investigations. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.” The market is run by Food Rocks, which stipulates in its conditions strict rules on safety of equipment used by traders and insists on at least £5million public liability insurance from them.

RMV Productions Create Lyric Videos For Ed Sheeran

Horsham-based creative team RMV Productions have been commissioned to produce three lyric videos for one of the world’s most successful singer/ songwriters. Lyric videos are oﬃcially ‘a thing’. For those of you who are not au-fait with the genre, they are animated music videos with the lyrics of the song incorporated in to, or acting as, the graphi-

When you get that all important email from Warner Music conﬁrming that you’ve got the job, it’s quite exciting cal element to illustrate the song. Usually used as a placeholder of sorts, until the ‘real’ video is produced, the lyric video has grown over recent years into its own art form, with big pop stars investing a lot of time and money in highly stylised animation. Lyric videos are no longer the sole domain of teenagers, busily making fan-based videos in tribute to their favourite artists - although they do still exist. Professionally produced lyric videos, like the ones created by RMV Productions, are serious artistic contenders, and now even command their own category at all the major international music awards shows. These illustrations were then animated with painted backgrounds and an animated ‘chalk’ font one of our designers created herself. Because we had to move quickly, we intended to use similar visuals across all three videos, but once our creative juices got flowing we actually ended up making three unique animations, which still match the overall creative style. Magic moment in time for school pupils Pupils from Christ’s Hospital in Horsham have a photograph of a cherished moment in time after they saw Professor Stephen Hawking receive the Honorary Freedom of the City of London at Guildhall. After the ceremony on Monday, a group of the school’s pupils were privileged to be introduced to Professor Hawking and be photographed with him, the only school group to be afforded the honour. Pupil Jack Inch, 16, said: “I am very proud that we had the opportunity of being photographed with the professor, a kind gesture made possible by the Lord Mayor. “During the ceremony, the Alderman and members of the council paid tribute to Professor Hawking’s contribution to the fields of theoretical physics and cosmology. “It was great to see that Professor Hawking possesses such a good sense of humour, sharing memories about his early school life and his life in London. “After the ceremony, the professor answered questions on artificial intelligence, extraterritorial life and time travel.

“It was not only a pleasure to meet Professor Hawking but also to be introduced to Professor Fay Dowker from Imperial College London, who was a PhD student under Professor Stephen Hawking. “We discussed a variety of topics ranging from physics to philosophy including the colonisation of mars and new political systems, quantum electrodynamics, free will and, again, time travel. “On behalf of all the pupils involved, I would like to thank the Lord Mayor for extending an invitation to our school to attend such important ceremony which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and will be remembered for the rest our lives.” The pupils had been invited by the Lord Mayor of London, Andrew Oarmley. The school has historical links with the city. To receive the Honorary Freedom of the City of London is rare. This has been awarded to Professor Hawking for his outstanding contribution to theoretical physics and cosmology. Only those who are truly exceptional have received this award, such as Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandala and Tim Berners-Lee.

Horror crash rescuers warn mobile phone users wide campaign, It Can Wait, to stress the importance of focussing on driving without answering, checking or using a mobile phone. Intervention and Prevention Deputy Manager Adrian Carter said: “Firefighters regularly see the terrifying consequences of road traffic collisions and as a service we fully support these tougher penalties on all drivers caught using a phone. We are warning new drivers to take heed of these changes especially, as picking up a phone for even a moment could result in an immediate loss of their newly gained licence. “We are calling on members of the public to support this campaign. Get involved by sharing our social media posts, encouraging friends and family to put their phones away, turn them off or onto silent when driving. Staﬀ help hospice win national award

Karen Norman at House of Lords Staff at St Catherine’s Hospice helped it win national recognition for an important aspect of its work. The hospice developed a programme used by hundreds of people to help managers of firms deal with supporting colleagues who were suffering from the loss of a loved one. The scheme won the hospice the runner- up award for the Bereavement Project of the Year award at the National Council for Palliative Care Awards. Karen Norman, Lead for Patient

and Family Support Services at Crawley-based St Catherine’s collected the runner up award at a prestigious awards ceremony, held as part of the National Council for Palliative Care’s 25th anniversary, at the House of Lords. The programme was developed in partnership with employee beneﬁts specialists Unum. The hospice said that for many people, going back to, and coping with work after bereavement can be an enormous challenge, but many employers did not feel conﬁdent providing people with the

vital support that’s needed. St Catherine’s and Unum’s “digital toolkit” aims to help employers by giving information and advice on the eﬀects of grief and bereavement, how it can impact people’s work and practical things employers can do to help people create a sense of normality, structure and focus which can help their recovery. Since its launch in May 2016, the toolkit has been used by more than 400 people. Karen said: “It’s fantastic to be nationally recognised for the work we’ve been doing around helping employers manage bereavement. For many of us, the workplace is where we spend most of our time so when you’re bereaved it’s important that your colleagues and managers feel able to support you. We hope lots of businesses will make use of the toolkit, either independently or as part of wider training, to make a positive difference to the support people get when they return to work after a bereavement. Firefighters in West Sussex who see the horrific human cost of crashes are warning new drivers to take note of tougher penalties on using mobile phones. From last week motorists caught using mobile phones while driving will now receive a £200 fine and six penalty points on their licence. Receiving six points on a licence that has been held for less than two years will result in it being immediately revoked. The increase in penalties, which have doubled from the original consequences of £100 and three points, is the result of a government consultation with the public which demonstrated the social unacceptability and widespread intolerance of using a mobile phone while behind the wheel. It has been illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving, unless calling 999 in an emergency, since 2003, but thousands of drivers ignore the law. Fireﬁghters car wash under way Little Sarah remembered in Teresa’s challenge

Firefighters are showing off their sponge skills at charity car wash events. Crews from Horsham, Billingshurst and Bognor have pledged to add an extra sparkle to the cars of local residents in exchange for a donation. All proceeds from the events will go to The Fire Fighters Charity. The next one is at Billingshurst Fire Station on March 18 from 10am-4pm, and after that at Bognor Fire Station on April 1 from 10am-3pm. Owners with cars needing some “TLC” can take them along to the stations, relax with a cup of tea while firefighters get it looking as good as new. Horsham firefighters have also taken the opportunity to give the community an insight on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator, now that one of

these devices is located outside Horsham fire station. An Automated External Defibrillator is a device that is able to detect whether a person, who has had a heart attack or is suffering from life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms, requires a lifesaving shock from a defibrillator, the device then guides the user through simple steps to administer a shock if it is required. More of these devices are getting installed around the county. Horsham held its car clean day last weekend. An inspiring memory will be on the shoulder of a Horsham woman as she steps out for a charity. Teresa Stonestreet lost a cherished great-niece, who died at the age of only seven to cancer. But Teresa eased the pain of losing little Sarah Watkin two years ago by starting something positive to remember her. And this month Teresa is, in her words, ‘walking all over cancer’ to raise money for Cancer Research UK. She will be walking a minimum of 10,000 steps every day, the equivalent of 150 miles. During her lunch break and after school, she is walking around Farlington School’s grounds to ensure she reaches her daily target. Last year she exceeded her fundraising target of £1000 with a similar eﬀort and hopes to do the same this year. Teresa, who works at the school, said: “It is a lovely time of year to get outside to walk

after the winter months. I work in beautiful countryside which makes my walks very enjoyable and at weekends I go to the beach. They have and continue to be an absolute inspiration, as was Sarah. Personally, I felt so helpless as the distance meant that there was little we could do physically to help so this challenge is one small thing that I can do to raise money in her memory. My only focus at the moment is to raise as much money as I can.”

Changes should make A24 safer Motorists will experience a safer drive along part of the A24 in future, say road bosses. West Sussex Highways is making a series of improvements costing about £28,000 to assist motorists at the A24 Shiremark Bends, south of Shiremark Farm. During work a diversion route follows A24 Horsham Road, A24 Dorking Road, A24 Horsham bypass, A24 Slip to A264 Broadbridge Heath bypass, A281 Billingshurst Road, A281 Broadbridge Heath bypass, A281

Guildford Road, A29 Bognor Road, across county boundary on A29 to re-join A24 Dorking Road. The work, which was scheduled to be done at night between 8pm and 6am, started on Monday and was due to ﬁnish by the end of this week, weather permitting. The work includes new chevrons and signs to highlight bends in the road, new verge markers and cutting back vegetation to make it easier to see. An overnight northbound lane

closure will be in place throughout the works to keep the public and workforce safe. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Bob Lanzer, said: “Putting in these improvements will highlight the shape of the road to motorists more clearly. “It will make road users feel safer on this stretch of road. “We ask anyone travelling overnight here to bear in mind the diversion route before setting out on their journey.”

Age UK Horsham District is running its 1940’s-50’s style Tea Dance ‘Strictly Vintage’ in the Drill Hall in Horsham during the afternoon. The event is being organised by Age UK Horsham District’s Fundraising Team and their volunteers and supported by Dark Star Brewery of Partridge Green. Over the last three years the

Adventurous Amy launches a cracker – meet the Horsham author!

News Martin Read - Reporter Local girl excels! Former Heron Way and Millais student Amy Baker is a writer, an amusing writer, and she has just written her ﬁrst book - an absolute cracker. Despite well meaning advice from nearest and dearest, colleagues and boss Amy decided to leave her secure job and head oﬀ to the other side of the world, often travelling on her own. Fortunately she documented her experiences in her highly entertaining book, aptly entitled Miss Adventures – a tale of ignoring life advice while back-

packing around South America. And the good news is that on Thursday (March 16) Amy will be at Waterstones, Horsham from 18.30 to 20.00 for an evening of readings and signing with refreshments. She is no stranger to spreading her wings, telling the District Post: “I’d previously backpacked around Australia, Europe and Asia and was looking for an exciting challenge. South America sounded like the place. Friends had been there, I’d been wanting to see it for myself and it was an opportunity to improve my Spanish!” Although Amy tried to break the news of her intentions gently she was bombarded with guidance, some was diplomatic but her boss

pulled no punches: “You’re going to leave this job to go to South America to be a travel writer? This is utterly absurd! This is not a sensible move for you!” if he has read the book he’ll be having second thoughts. Others questioned whether it might not be better to settle down and have a family, and is it wise for a woman to travel alone? Amy says: “These weren’t easy discussions but I’m stubborn and was determined to go, so I did! I was fed up with being sensible.” Amy had studied law and criminology at university, lived in London, is sociable and open minded and relishes meeting friends and making new ones. But, she was fully

tested. She learned plenty about South America and as much about herself, her decision making, resourcefulness and endurance levels - and she shares that with readers, without holding back. First stop was Buenos Aires, changing money ad hoc, discovering who to trust, before heading to colourful Caminito Street and then La Bombanera (the Chocolate Box) football stadium of Maradona’s Boca Juniors, only to be chased by marauding hooligans. Next came Bolivia, breathless La Paz, 3650 metres above sea level with cholitas – indigenous women - in thick pleated skirts and tiny bowler hats. A trip up the Amazon to the exhausting boiler room heat of the insect-laden, slithery rain forest followed, with its amazing, dangerous wild life and stunning guide Arturo, whose entertainment included wrestling with a massive boa constrictor. Further raptures came with handsome, but strange, Daniel, a Portuguese numerologist - light relief ahead of mountain climbing in the dark to avoid daytime avalanches, culminating in the mental and physical challenge of Amy dragging herself up a windswept, sheer ice wall. In Ecuador there was the exhilarating swing at Banos, then on to Colombia, a particularly beautiful and captivating favourite, two friends ﬂying out from London to participate in the enjoyment of the Caribbean coast. There was sickness in Peru, some perilous swimming, one or two unsavoury characters, far more kindred

spirits and many bizarre happenings along the way. They are all delighted to see her return unscathed and proud of her achievement! Just as well because Amy is not about to shred her passport, telling the District Post: “Next time I want to go east – India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Central America, too. My boyfriend and I are thinking of trying to circumnavigate the globe without flying, which is exciting!” And, with the benefit of her experience is there any advice that Amy would offer? “Just go for it, remain vigilant, plan ahead, make sound decisions – and love it!” The most reassuring send off Amy had was from her father, Horsham’s Paul Baker – “Remember, if you don’t like it you can always come home.” There will be more trips – and hopefully a series of books from Amy. Praise for community at Henﬁeld Haven

“Bienvenido” on television for students Spanish television captured the warm welcome for students from Horsham during an education trip. A group of 13 A Level Spanish students journeyed to the beautiful town of Hellin near Alicante, as part of an exchange link between Collyer’s and the Instituto Cristobal Lozano. The visit generated so much interest that Spanish television and radio broadcast the Mayor of Hellin’s welcome. The school said that the mayor was delighted to personally receive the English visitors and invited Collyer’s teachers and students

Volunteers and staff at a community centre won praise from a VIP visitor. Leader of West Sussex Council Louise Goldsmith called on Henfield Haven about 15 months after the community took over its running. Cllr Goldsmith said: Louise said: “I was delighted to visit the Haven just over a year on from its opening. It is such a warm welcoming centre and provides much need help and support for those living with dementia, as well as being a community hub for residents. “What shone through was the commitment and enthusiasm from the volunteers and staff to provide something very special for the community in and around

Henfield. “This was a very special project for us all and it is great to see how it is developing and to learn of the future plans. This is another fine example of West Sussex County Council working with the community for the community. I am looking forward to my return visit.” Mrs Goldsmith met staff, volunteers and centre users after being welcomed by Tony Jackson, a Director of Henfield Social Enterprise Community Initiative Company, which runs the centre. Mrs Goldsmith saw the facilities and heard about what had been achieved since being taken on by the local community.The County Council transferred the former Henfield Day Centre to the com-

munity in November 2015 under a long term lease. Tony paid thanks to the County Council for putting its trust in this community led venture and for its ongoing support. Princess Royal asks for quicker restoration justice Katy Bourne with the Princess Royal.

Victims of crime should have quicker opportunities to face their attackers, the Princess Royal said in a visit to see how a scheme in West and East Sussex is succeeding. The Princess discussed with Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne at her oﬃce the Sussex Restorative Justice Partnership, which runs the scheme as an addition to the usual criminal punishment process. After speaking to the Princess Mrs Bourne said: “The Princess Royal talked about the importance of restorative justice and called for the time between conviction and victims being oﬀered restorative justice to be shortened

Rosalyn, a survivor of a serious sexual assault in 1999 had her life devastated by prolonged and extreme violence. She eventually met her attacker 15 years later and, through telling him the harm and the suffering he had caused her, was finally able to regain control and get on with her life.

The Consecration of St Mark’s Holbrook On Thursday 23 February, the Bishop of Chichester, the Rt Revd Dr Martin Warner, consecrated St. Mark’s, in the newly established Parish of Holbrook in north Horsham. Church members of St Mark’s, and clergy from neighbouring parishes, packed out the church to witness this ‘rare’ event in the life of the diocese. Consecration services of this type are exceptionally uncommon within the Church of England, and this was the ﬁrst such service Bishop Martin has been privileged to conduct. Students bring power to the people Students at Tanbridge House School hit the saddle a bid to raise enough money to power a local hospice for a day. As part of the St Catherine’s Hospice Five-0 Project, six Tanbridge students organised a sponsored stationary cycle. They hope that eventually they will have raised enough money to power the St Catherine’s premises in Crawley for one day, which costs about £700. The bike ride is just one of a number of challenges and fundraisers that are taking place as part of the Five-0 Project. This sees students trying to raise as much money as possible from an initial £50 investment. Other events for the Five-0 Project at Tanbridge include a Fitness Festival, a Bake-Oﬀ, and a Dodge-

Experts quizzed by the audience included Amy Sprules of RSM, April Tilson of Assurity Consulting, Ali Hainsworth of Grant Thornton, Emillie Corden of Nestle, Laura Emberson of Virgin Holidays and Virgin Atlantic, Prof. Dave Cooper of Chichester University, James Seden Smith of Red RiverChichester University, Domi Wilkinson of the Army, and Tom Charman of Gatwick Airport. The experts explained that students need to be proactive to become credible candidates for employment. It became clear that alternative higher education is not an ‘easy way out’ after A-Levels, but is actually a prestigious and popular pathway. One recurring message of the evening was that the market for alternative higher education is highly competitive, and so the best thing a student can do is compete for these roles. Nestle’s Emillie Cordon said: “I thought the question and answer panel was a clever idea and the work Collyer’s does in this area is the best I’ve seen. Horsham Bluebelles compete in Tillys name

At the weekend, 26 Horsham Bluebelles competed in a charity competition in Burgess Hill to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House in Brighton. This is a cause close to the girls’ hearts, as a very close friend and fellow baton twirler stayed there, on and oﬀ for a year, whilst her little girl, Tilly, fought for her life. Having been born at only 13oz, Tilly was the smallest baby that the Trevor Mann Baby Unit had ever cared for. Although Tilly went home for 6.5 months, on oxygen, and did amazingly well, she picked up a virus and spent

the next 10 months in various high dependency units. Sadly, Tilly lost her ﬁght, after further complications, and passed away at the age of 21 months. A representative of Horsham Bluebelles said: “She will always be remembered by many of her Baton Twirling friends as a happy girl with an infectious smile, even when she was going through extremely difﬁcult times. “The competition, which raised £2000, will help other parents and families stay close to their children whilst in hospital in Brighton.

“Not only did the girls get enjoyment out of raising this fantastic sum but they all did exceeding well. Their hard work paid oﬀ, winning awards in 72 solo events, 7 team events and Maddison Flack winning STAR TWIRLER.” Horsham Bluebelle, Hannah Munden, will also be running her ﬁrst London Marathon in aid of the Rocking Horse Charity, which helps to improve lives of sick children throughout Sussex. Coming soon at grass verge near you The haircut season is under way in West Sussex for grass verges. West Sussex Highways is ﬁring up the lawnmowers for the next few weeks as its grass cutting season gets under way. The council runs two diﬀerent rotas for grass cutting in West Sussex, covering urban and rural areas. In urban areas workers make seven cuts a year between March and November. These are done by teams using lawnmowers and strimmers. The only exceptions are locations where the county council arranges for district and borough councils to cut on its behalf. In the countryside, or where there are no pavements, the council make one overall cut per year. It says it maintains rural verges so pedestrians can avoid walking in the road, with two one-metre wide cuts to stop grass and vegetation overhanging the road. Cuts in rural areas are carried out by teams using a

tractor. County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Bob Lanzer said: “Grass cutting is a major part of our highways maintenance operation and even though it’s still winter, our teams will be out making verges neat and safe. “We cut the grass in urban areas an extra two times a year more than the national standard. “Normally it takes about four to six weeks to cut all grass across the county, so please rest assured if we are not in your area cutting grass next week, we will be soon.” West Sussex Highways does not collect grass cuttings as the cost involved would restrict the number of cuts that could be done. The council said: “We try to blow cuttings back onto the verge. Some will cover or fall into drains but this is unlikely to block them.” Grass cutting in recreational areas such as parks and housing areas is carried out by district or borough councils, or housing authorities. Highways England looks after verges on the A27, M23 and A23.

Nature of Sussex exhibition opens at Horsham Oﬀer to end lonely Sundays for over 75s

The photographs of Roger Wilmshurst feature in his exhibition called the Nature of Sussex at Horsham Museum. The exhibition is now open and

runs until April 29, with free admission.The Museum said: “Planet Earth II brought us the world into our home - the stunning jaw-dropping photography and

filming revealed the diversity and complexity as well as the beauty of the world. It was achieved by spending hours, days and weeks in the field. Now, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are showing just that. However, instead of the world, it is bringing The Nature of Sussex into the Museum. This exhibition showcases the talent and dedication of Sussexborn, Washington resident Roger Wilmshurst, who shows that you don’t have to travel more than 20 miles to be captivated by the stunning and dramatic. Using his many years of experience, sensitivity to nature and deep understanding of his home county, Roger has mastered that rare quality of capturing that image which is The Nature of Sussex - be it landscape, ornithology or intimate scene. The 16 photographs on show span some 30 years of colour photography, and with no Photoshop, just pure skill at using a camera. Though Roger has only ever entered two competitions, his passion is for the photography itself rather than the competitive arena, he won first prize as BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the Bird Behaviour section in 1995. He has also been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society and is currently the President of the Zoological Photographic Club, founded c.1898. This is an exhibition of true talent, revealing that on our doorstep lays the ‘nature of Sussex’ that can compare in its own way with the BBC’s Planet Earth.” Some of Roger’s work is pictured.

Older Horsham residents who are lonely on Sunday are being oﬀered company. People helping pensioners say that the day of the week can be one of the most dispiriting for those living alone and seeing no-one. Charity volunteers are oﬀering to collect over-75s and give them

tea, cakes and chat at their own homes. The scheme is being run by the charity Contact The Elderly. Horsham residents, aged 75 and above, who live alone without the support of family and friends, and are interested in joining the Horsham Contact the Elderly group can contact Julia Rivas, Development Officer, on 01273 805451 or email julia.rivas@contact-theelderly.org.uk. The established group in Horsham says it has space for a number of new guests to join and the charity is keen to raise awareness of these openings among the local community. Contact the Elderly, with the support of thousands of volunteers all across the UK, organises monthly tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would like some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Development Officer Julia Rivas said: “For older people who live alone, Sundays can be particularly long and difficult. These tea parties give people a chance to get together with others, make new friends, eat delicious cakes and enjoy a cup of tea. The monthly events make a real difference to the lives of those in the group and we would encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch.”

Sussex Social Netwalking is launching with a free walk at 9.30am on 23 March at Buchan Country Park, near Crawley. If you’d like to try out this new way of networking, you need to register on www.patadventures.com. All you will need is your business cards, walking boots/sturdy shoes and a bottle of water or hot flask. They will provide the route and a snack and will local experts in their field joining them on walks so you can learn and walk too. After the launch on 23 March the walks will be twice monthly

Horsham company working to reduce drink driving offences in Sussex On average, 3,000 people have been killed or seriously injured in drink drive collisions, in the last five years in the UK, and over 613,090 people were charged with drink driving related offences. On the back of these shocking statistics, local Skoda dealership, Station Garage, has teamed up with AlcoDigital in an attempt to help make Sussex’s roads safer. Official government statistics reported that more than half a million breath tests are carried out each year and, on average, one in five are found to be positive. Recent data released by the Department for Transport revealed that there were 1,780 road deaths in 2014/2015, an increase of 3% compared to figures for 2013/2014. Whilst these cannot all be directly linked to drink driving, 3,100 arrests were made for the specific offence in West Sussex alone, over a six-month period. In fact, statistics prove that you are three times more likely to be involved in a traffic related accident even after just one drink.” James Thorpe, Dealer Principal at Station Garage, added: “These figures show the significant harm done, both in terms of deaths and injuries, by drink drivers in the UK. It is worrying that the number of drink drive deaths has continued to increase, particularly when we know exactly what we need to do in order to reduce the number of fatalities. “Our new breathalyser initiative is a small step in helping Sussex drivers stay safer on the roads and highly encourage them to pop into our dealership and pick up their free potentially lifesaving device.”

Horsham Sports Club is proud to announce its very own oneday live music festival The Big Gig: Horsham Tribute Music Festival, this summer on Sat 24 th June 2017 It’s time to get excited Horsham! Some of the best musicians in the area are coming together to provide a fun packed day of top class live music, festival activities, street food, drinks and dancing. Five fantastically talented bands playing music that you know are the line-up for the day, covering the likes of, ABBA, Take That, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Oasis, Blur and much more! in 1791, at the age of just 35. Although Mozart had ﬁnished a number of movements, the work was incomplete and it was Mozart’s student cum assistant Süssmayr who ﬁnished it. There are a few mysteries surrounding the work, one of which is whom it was for; Mozart, in ill health, may have thought he was

composing his own requiem. Not surprising then that he was in no rush to finish the work. Nor is it totally clear who commissioned it; probably Count Franz von Walsegg; his wife Anna who had just died at the tragically young age of 20. The Count had the reputation of passing off music as his own work and there are suspicions that he would have claimed credit for the Requiem, too. The last music Mozart ever composed is the first eight bars of the well-known, beautiful ‘Lacrimosa’; Christ’s Hospital Theatre invites an audience to enjoy this piece and the rest of the Requiem Mass. ‘He was facing a life of pain’ How pet puppy Fergus bounced back from injury to become Extraordinary Dog A beloved pet puppy who was facing a life of pain after suﬀering a mystery injury has made a remarkable recovery – and is now set to be honoured at the world’s biggest dog show. Fergus, a larger than life Leonberger, was just a few weeks old when his owners noticed he was having diﬃculty walking and

struggling to stand from a sit. He was refusing food and slept much more than a puppy should. But after undergoing a course of specialist canine muscle therapy he is bouncing back and displaying all the usual behaviour of a puppy. And his remarkable turnaround is set to be celebrated at Crufts where he will be named

‘extraordinary dog of the year’ by the canine therapist who helped get him back on his feet. do not know what we would have done if we had not found Galen Myotherapy and Julia. He could have been looking at a life of operations and pain, but she has given Fergus a great future. “Julia has a special way with dogs and seemed to understand straight away what was causing him problems. She undoubtedly gave Fergus a new lease of life and having him named as Galen’s Extraordinary Dog of the Year award is just the icing on the cake.” Fergus’ problems started when he was just eight weeks old – the cause for which remain a mystery to his owner and breeder. He was finding it difficult to walk, struggled to stand from sitting so was bottom shuffling instead, and wanted to sleep all the time – only staying awake for 1-2 hours a day. He was also picky with his food. Vanessa sought advice and was told his behaviour was probably normal for a growing puppy of his size, but her concerns only grew as his unusual character quirks continued, and after talking to Fergus’ breeder she got in touch with Julia. Julia’s treatment, Galen Myotherapy, is derived in-part from massage and helps dogs suffer-

ing from musculoskeletal pain, arthritis and underlying issues. It was hoped a course of myotherapy would improve Fergus’ mobility and it went on to have instant results. After just one session Vanessa noticed an improvement in his behaviour - he was able to stand more easily, walked happily and climbed on the furniture like any cheeky puppy. Julia, a former veterinary nurse, said: “Fergus’ transformation from a slow-moving, fatigued bottom-shuﬄer to a bouncy puppy that’s full of energy has been incredible and wonderful to see. “He has been a joy to work with and his remarkable turnaround made him ﬁrst choice for Galen’s Extraordinary Dog Award.” Fergus will be presented with his award at Galen’s stand at Crufts at 12pm on Saturday, March 11. The Galen team will be in Hall 3 Stand 28A for the Crufts weekend, where they will be demonstrating myotherapy and discussing the domestic dangers our homes can present to dogs. Property market ‘phenomenal’ according to leading agent A slowdown in the housing market has been widely reported across the UK. But one leading estate agent says his area is bucking the trend having enjoyed a “phenomenal” start to 2017. James Britton is partner at Roger Coupe estate agents, which has served the Surrey/ Sussex border area for more than 25 years, and says he has seen a surge in sales since January, with some homes going for above the asking price. This is despite a recent survey that revealed asking prices had risen at the slowest annual rate in nearly four years. Figures released by Rightmove showed annual price growth fell from 3.2% in January to 2.3% in February – the worst since April 2013. Roger Coupe’s 2017 success, which started immediately after the new year festivities, has continued throughout January and February. “The start of the year can often start slowly but this year instead we saw a spike. Three homes we had on the market at Christmas that had interest but failed to sell were all snapped up within the first two weeks of the year – with one going for over the asking price,” James said. “The changes to stamp duty and second home rates, as well as Brexit, may well have played their part in the slowdown but the EU Referendum result in particular could also have

something to do with the surge we’ve seen, with people keen to complete before Article 50 is triggered.” James explained people being pushed out of the London housing bubble is undoubtedly playing a part in the area’s popularity with ever-increasing price rises in the capital pointing towards a resurgence for many commuter towns across the South East. Another recent survey showed Dartford in Kent to be the fastest selling location in the UK, while Clacton-on-Sea in Essex was enjoying the biggest drop in the number of days it takes to sell*. Less traditional commuter towns are also enjoying a rise in house prices. Luton saw the biggest increase in house prices over the last year jumping by 19.4% from £214,934 to £256,636, while neighbouring Dunstable saw its average leap by 17.9%**. James said: “UK-wide figures have revealed a slowdown but there are plenty of places that seem to be going against the norm with continued strong sales, and the Surrey/Sussex border area is certainly one of them. “The market has been phenomenal for us since the start of January and with spring on the horizon – the traditional boom period for house buying – we’re hopeful this trend will continue.”

Horsham Tri Club launch GoTri 2017 Triathlon

Following the success they achieved last year, Horsham Tri Club will be again be running their GoTri events with the aim of promoting and make accessible to all the sport of triathlon. This year’s GoTri open events will be held at the Pavilions and Horsham Park on the following Saturday’s: April 15, May 13, June 10, July 8, August 12, Sept 9 & Oct 7. These events are aimed at beginners and there is no minimum ﬁtness level that needs to

be met. The adult events consist of a 200m pool swim and either a 3.4km or 5km run, for the juniors (11-14yrs) there is a 100m pool swim followed by a 1.6km run. Horsham Tri Club Chairman John Birkens, talking about the growth of the club, highlights the major increase in membership during 2016, the number of those members who now are on the point of achieving GB age group status, and of course those who did represent their country. He also puts last year’s Go Tri events as one of the success stories and

instrumental in the growth of the club. He however believes the main success of the club since its formation in 2011 comes from the members themselves and the support that they oﬀer each other throughout the club. Premier Division 1, Horsham duly delivered with a determined win against higher in the table Old Cranleighans, avenging November’s 3-0 defeat against the same opponents. A Barney Knights Johnson strike was pushed out but no Horsham team mate could latch onto it. Then an opposition short corner was well saved by Andy Isaacs, who had another outstanding game, before John Burroughs was unable to convert a golden opportunity, ahead of another of his trade mark long runs being aborted. Following a further OC short Sean Pearcy shot wide, the goal-less ﬁrst half ending with OC pressing, but their free kick and three more shorts were either parried or oﬀ target. Early in the second half a Dan Humphreys backhander sailed over and an excellent Freddie Campbell/Joey Humphreys/Burroughs build up came to nought until, in the 15th minute, a Pearcy shot rebounded for Knights Johnson to whack in. The tight game continued with Horsham defend-

ing feverishly, Dom Cohen twice clearing close range attempts and Isaacs blocking smashes with every part of his body, saying: “They followed through a bit!” Crucially, he dived full-length to save a penalty and OC frustration in the frantic last 10 minutes resulted in a sending off. Their seventh short corner was saved just before the whistle. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We had our best 16 out and played with passion. Our defence was fantastic and so was our discipline – it’s difficult to win if we don’t keep players on the pitch!” German U21 international Nik Reiger debuted in mid field for Horsham, holding the ball up well and telling us: “I hadn’t played for a while, so it was great to get an important three points on my first outing.” Tomorrow (Saturday 11) Horsham travel to Earlsfield, to take on 6th placed Spencer, who lost 0-2 against London Wayfarers last Saturday, but beat Horsham 4-1 at Broadbridge Heath in November.

He told us that he couldn’t coach us if we can’t pass the ball to one another! Fortunately, but inexplicably, Oxford changed their tactics in the second half, perhaps they thought that two goals was a sufficient cushion for them to win and stopped pressing. Atlantis Swimming Club has just finished the final weekend of the County Swimming Championships with a flurry of medals and county titles. For the senior girls Beth Britton took the Sussex County Championship Open titles in the 200m freestyle and 50m freestyle which has now seen her being selected for the ESSA South East Regional team. Zoe Cawsey achieved three bronze medals while Lily Davis added silver to her collection and Freya Fulcher won two silver medals in the 16 year old 50m and 100m backstroke. Senior Club Captain, Aiden Sparling was outstanding earning a silver

rewarded with a short corner, White hitting Sam Stares’ injection across for Elle Blakesley to reduce the deﬁcit. Then in the 25th minute White cracked another short corner onto the top of the backboard to level, with the same scoreline as when the two teams met at home in October. Horsham are back at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (Saturday) to welcome Woking, who describes themselves as one of the largest clubs in the country. But, with just 13 goals and one win from 15 starts Woking are cut adrift at the bottom of the table. Horsham beat them 2-0 in Surrey on Guy Fawkes Night. Meanwhile, last Sunday, Horsham mixed team beat their London Wayfarers opposite numbers 5-1 in the cup with two goals from Joey Humphreys and one apiece from Ollie Spiers, Sean Pearcy and Louisa Denman – and, a special guest appearance from Hockey Club Chairman Nick Evans in goal, reliving his former glory days for the ﬁrst team. Horsham mixed XI now await news of their opponents in the next round on April 9.

Amelia Wright achieved the title of Junior County Champion in winning gold in the 200m breaststroke, Toby Van Der Hut added the 200m backstroke Junior Championship title to the medal haul and Matt Boyes took an impressive win in the 17 year old Men’s 200m backstroke. In the 12 year old girls age group category Amber Ranson continued to win gold after gold, taking 10 in total. Issy Hayes added a further two golds in the 50m and 100m fly to give her a hat-trick of golds in the fly events whilst Jacob Davis continued his breastroke domination by adding the 50m

breaststroke gold medal to his collection. Youngster Charlie Clarke won a fantastic gold medal in the 200m individual medley. Oliver Colombo also looked in superb form with the highlight of his competition being gold in the 11 year old 50m freestyle. Head Coach Andy Lobley was delighted with the team’s performance “It has been a great County Championships for Atlantis as a whole and I am really pleased with all the results that everyone has achieved, not just our medal winners.” Atlantis now concentrates on the South East Regional competition in May as the next target for many of the club’s top swimmers.

The club would also like to congratulate a number of younger boxers - all at the tender ages of 8 – 10 - who represented the club with pride at The Cralwey B.C. Gym Show. Zach Rhioui, Miley Wilson, Len Smith, Nathan Doe, Louie Purchase and Romarco Fatehnia all contested cracking skills bouts where no winners are declared with the aim being to introduce young boxers to the ring. The junior boxers will be joined by seniors Simon Bayliss, Phil Willis, Ryan Thorpe and an anticipated return for Tom Tennant on the next Horsham show at the Holbrook Club on Saturday the April 1. After victory in Crawley in February, Horsham Boxing Clubs’ Zach Hurry was back on his travels again, securing a unanimous points victory over an extremely slick and tough opponent. After making the long journey to High Wycombe after school on Friday evening, Zach and his coach were met with a hostile home crowd and an unbeaten fighter, who was brimming with confidence. Zach tried to dominate the first round but was dazzled by some flash footwork and quick punches. After a talking to from his corner, Hurry came out strongly in the second round, setting a blistering pace and landing some heavy combinations. The third round was much of the same with Zach dominating using strength, skill and determination. Coach Sam Knight said “We knew this was going to be Zach’s toughest test so far but he really rose to the occasion and boxed perfectly to instruction. He should be very proud to come to such a good club and win so convincingly”. Horsham hope to have Hurry out again this weekend in Southampton, along with bouts for Tom Creasey and young Max Cole. Cole, at 11 years old, is likely to be entered into the National Minors Competition off the back of this Saturday’s Horsham’s Zach Hurry secured a good win bout.

simpler, Horsham soon got into their stride. With 10 minutes played, Tony Nwachukwu’s run was ended with a cynical foul and from James Thurgar’s free kick Alfie Rogers ghosted in to head past ‘keeper Alex Hyde. Then 8 minutes later, and against the run of play, the hosts equalised when after a poor clearance from Ash Jones, Ade Batula had the time and space to beat Pelling. Horsham continued to have the lion’s share of the ball and from a corner kick they regained the lead that their play deserved. Thurgar was again the provider and Rogers again the grateful recipient as his close range effort went past Hyde. A Charlie Farmer mistake nearly gifted Chatham a shock equaliser but Horsham could have gone further ahead when Hyde saved well from Nwachukwu and then grasped Farmer’s tame header. The Hornets came out looking even more determined and soon had Chatham on the back foot and two goals down from a bizarre own goal. Chatham defender Freeman Rogers ensured all four Horsham goals would be scored by a player named Rogers when he wildly sliced a cross into his own net. Chatham to their credit tried to get back into it and had a few half chances, but in truth they lacked quality and urgency and look certain to be relegated. With eight minutes remaining Rogers completed his hat-trick when after another fine run and cross from Nwachukwu he met the ball first time to guide it past Hyde. The frustrations started to get the better of the home side and an awful tackle from Ricky Freeman on Darren Boswell was punished by a straight red card and Chatham Coach Simon Halsey was sent from the dugout for abusive language. Seemingly, with the bad run of form now behind them and the Kentish curse broken, Horsham will be facing another Kent side, Herne Bay, when they visit Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday 11).

Joggers spring into the marathon season Athletics Phil Liberman - Horsham Joggers Huge challenges and big personal bests were the order as Horsham Joggers athletes continued their build ups to the spring marathons. The very hilly and muddy Steyning Stinger half and full marathon’s were tackled by Steve Wigmore who claimed a brilliant top 20 ﬁnish in 1.45.36. Also running in the half marathon were: Kate Short 2.23.25, Richard Bourne 2.30.11, Marian Bourne 2.30.12, Charley Crocker 2.35.26, Viv Underhill 2.47.31, Fiona Clifton 2.47.35 and Elizabeth Scott 2.59.37. And in the full marathon; Allan Clarke 3.33.53, Helen Woods 5.20.25, Graham Clarke 6.48.29 and Gemma Berrill 6.48.52 all ran well.

At Leith Hill another hilly half marathon was tackled by Chris Yeomans 2.39.43, Amanda Avery 3.25.18 and Linda Morris 2.35.18. In windy conditions at Eastbourne’s hills half marathon Rob Crocker was first Jogger home in 1.38.36 followed by Brian Frost 1.43.46, Alan Pettitt 1.46.03, Paul Yokom 1.52.57 and Caroline Bransden 2.20.07. Further along the coast the Selsey 10K was attended by Penny Barron 50.43, Margaret Wadman 55.49, Richard Barron 64.30, Jo Hughes 74.02 and Sharon Gibson 86.00. Finally in the build up to her first London Marathon Kirsty Anstee Brown ran the Cambridge Half Marathon, smashing her personal best to set a mark of 1.50.30 in the process. Her husband, Matthew, also had an excellent run finishing in 1.18.27.

Weakened Heath beaten ahead of a busy week SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 3 Chichester City Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath have had a diﬃcult period in recent weeks having lost to division leaders Shoreham and then to 2nd placed Haywards Heath and on Saturday it was the turn of 3rd place Chichester City to take on the Bears at the Leisure Centre. Heath were without Moore, Holmes and Howard all injured and Attwater, Weller and Godfrey all unavailable. The visitors have only lost two league games all season and started quickly with Dan Heggarty forcing an early save from Michael Chester. The visitor’s continued to press and scored their opening goal in the 12th minute when John Horncastle found space to steer a header wide of Chester. Heath gradually got into the game and on 20 minutes Jamal Sultan had a shot cleared oﬀ the goal line before

minutes later Tim Martin fired into the side netting; the score however remained 0-1 at the break. The visitor’s second goal was scored 20 minutes into the restart, Dan Sandell gave away a free kick 22 yards from goal and Lorrenzo Dolcetti stepped up to hit a perfect left foot curler that went round the wall and into the top left hand corner. The game was killed off 5 minutes later when Omar Barry found space in the penalty area and hit a shot across the face of goal that came off Harry Balfour for an unfortunate own goal. In the final minutes Heath grabbed a consolation goal when George Cousins played a through ball into the path of Dean Wright who went on to chip the keeper. The next few games are no easier for the Bears as after the Peter Bentley Cup semifinal at Steyning on Tuesday against in-form Haywards Heath they then travel to 5th place Eastbourne United, tomorrow (Saturday 11).

YM coast past Lancing in bad tempered encounter SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3 – 1 Lancing Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA extended their unbeaten run to four games with a home victory over Lancing; the three points lifting them up to mid-table tenth in the league. Things could have turned out differently however when with just six minutes played the visitors were awarded a penalty. The opportunity for Lancing was fortunately for YM squandered as the penalty kick was blasted high over Mark Fox’s crossbar. The let off for YM was soon punished as within minutes they had taken the lead. Seconds after loud and persistent appeals from YM for a goal were turned away by the referee, after the ball seemed to cross the goal line, Phil Johnson reacted quicker than ‘keeper Michael Platt to turn the ball into the net. For the remainder of the first half the match developed into a tough tackling gritty affair that saw no further goals but bookings for both Johnson and Alex Gathern.

Lancing continued to have slightly the better of the play in the second half and they grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 70th minute when Alex Fair’s fierce long range gave Fox no chance. The physical and underlying niggly nature of the match increased as both sides went for a second goal that eventually came the way of YM after both sides had wasted chances to score. Following a frantic goal mouth scramble Sam Schaaf bundled the ball over the line after it had come back out to him off the post, and YM had the lead. YM were then reduced to 10 men when substitute Brad Curtis was first booked for dissent and then shown a second yellow a few minutes later for a poor tackle. Dave Brown of YM and George Fenton of Lancing were also shown yellow as the match threatened to get out of hand. With a player short YM came under increased pressure from Lancing with the visitors again guilty of fluffing their chances in front of goal which was once again punished in the last minute when Phil Johnson scored his second with a breakaway goal to finally secure the three points.

beaten on Dulwich Common earlier in the season. Skipper Tom Johnson opened the scoring with a try. Josh Steggles and Andy Carvell also got across the line and in addition to Johnson’s two conversions, Will Bell kicked a long range penalty and although OA took advantage

of some mistakes, Horsham led 22-12 at the break. On resumption the visitors had a close range attack thwarted, Johnson kicking clear after poor handling in front of the posts and four Horsham tackles averted the danger. Horsham then attacked strongly only to have a try disallowed because of a knock on, but Giles Barber did soon manage to get over, Johnson adding the extras. Again OA dropped the ball when favourably placed before Steggles completed a good running try, maximised by Johnson. An unconverted OA try in the corner rounded off the scoring but this was of little consequence, Horsham running out worthy 36-17 winners. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker told the District Post: “We had some team changes and played better than we have done for a while. Our set pieces worked well, so I’m very pleased!” With four more games to play this season, Horsham, still sixth, are in East Sussex tomorrow (Saturday 11), playing tenth in the table Heathfield & Waldron, whom they beat 17-3 at home in November. Heathfiield were walloped 55-10 by Dartfordians last Saturday.

The changed Boro side opened

the scoring when evergreen prop Guy Baxter gathered skipper Simon Burfiend’s kick to score left of the posts. Then Ollie Paige intercepted a kick to touch down. Ashford retaliated, eventually bundling over and securing the first conversion of the game, before powerhouse Henry Lee battered his way through for Boro’s third try and a 15-7 half time lead. With the benefit of the slope and wind Boro steamed ahead, George Lee getting over and converting

ahead of Man of the Match Ollie Paige jinking through, Lee again kicking over. Matt Goring then notched up his debut try for the 1st XV, Lee maximising before Ashford caught the Boro defence napping and, although they converted, Boro were 36-14 in front. Boro kept up the pressure, Burfiend’s dive over booted home by Lee, who subsequently did the same when Ben Sadler produced his first try for the seniors. Dan Paige then sprinted under the posts for Lee to add the extras, Boro storming home 57-14. Simon Burfiend told the District Post: “Ashford haven’t won away from home but they’re stronger than their position suggests and never gave up. It was a good workout for us and enabled us to try out some moves before our all-important four remaining matches, three of which are against leading teams. Tomorrow (Saturday 11) is a big day for us when, we make the long trip to Thanet Wanderers, we’ve been gearing up for this match since Christmas!” The two clubs have alternated at the top of the table throughout the season. In November a weakened Boro side lost 13-19 in the home encounter.

YMCA out-gunned by lively Arundel SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 - 4 Arundel Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YM had won their two previous games, netting nine times, while Arundel were struggling, but the visitors ran out comprehensive winners - yet, YM kept Arundel at bay for most of the first half, until two late goals left them trailing 3-0 at the break. An early Arundel corner was headed away and YM crosses came to nought, Dave Brown having an attempt blocked before kicking over. Both sides had unfulfilled opportunities, until, in the 27th minute, Arundel’s Dave Herbert drove into an empty goal. A YM corner then soared over before an innocuous looking Arundel foray created defensive hesitation for Herbert to score again. Then, right on half time, after abortive YM attempts, Dion Jarvis found clear space to put the visitors three ahead. On resumption a YM attack was punched clear and a rebound shot kicked off the line. An Arundel surge was then bundled away and, with the referee

under assessment, yellow cards abounded amid two YM corners, a free kick and errant shots. With YM pressing hard, they were reduced to ten men when Dean Carden was sent off for dissent just ahead of a trip in the box gifting Arundel a penalty. But, Rory Biggs’ strike was spectacularly saved at full stretch by Mark Fox, first with his hands and then his feet and two rebound volleys were denied until the ball was finally fired over. Following Brown’s close range shot and a YM corner evading the target, the ball went out of play, unspotted - allowing Arundel to break down the right, Biggs crashing home just before the final whistle. Disappointed YM Manager Peter Buckland said: “We had to change our line-up when three players, including top scorer Phil Johnson, were delayed and couldn’t start, the enforced format didn’t suit and we just imploded. We battered Arundel in the second half when Johnson did come on, but they defended well and we just couldn’t score.” On Saturday (March 11) YM travel to The Beacon to take on mid table Hassocks.

Battling Heath miss out on cup final Peter Bentley Cup semi-final Broadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Haywards Heath Town Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Having lost 4-0 to promotion hopefuls Haywards Heath in the league only 10 days earlier the teams met again on Tuesday night on the 3G at Steyning in the Peter Bentley Cup semi-final. With Assistant Manager Steve Whiting in charge of the Bears, Haywards Heath started better and had long periods of possession but were mainly restricted to shots from distance which was comfortably dealt with by ‘keeper Michael Chester. Despite the pressure the first real chances of the game came to the Bears through Ollie Moore, Jake Holmes and Tim Martin who all narrowly missed the target. Haywards Heath’s big defenders were a constant threat at set pieces and just before the break they almost took the lead when a powerful goal bound header was cleared by Mitchell Clark. 5 minutes into the restart Bears were awarded a free kick some 30 yards from goal. In the absence of a wall, Moore stepped up and hammered a right for shot that sent the keeper the wrong way and it flew past him into the net.

Haywards Heath continued to have the majority of possession but on the counter attack Moore looked dangerous and was again twice on target but both efforts were dealt with by ‘keeper James Shaw. With 16 minutes remaining the pressure finally told and predictably the goal came from a corner which was deflected out to Callum Saunders who rifled the ball into the roof of the net. Heath defended desperately to keep the Blues at bay and the referee suddenly decided to go card crazy, showing yellow cards left right and centre to Heath players for what seemed minor offences. Heath started extra without their two main goals threats, Jake Holmes and Ollie Moore who had limped out of the game and Bears hopes were further dashed after 12 minutes of extra time when Shaun Findlay was shown a second yellow and Heath were down to 10. A difficult task became even more daunting when the Blues scored their 2nd goal 2 minutes into the second half of extra-time. In the closing minutes Dan Sandell was shown his second yellow and the Bears finished the match with 9 players. Haywards Heath Town now meet Pagham in the final but the Bears can be proud of putting up a strong performance against all the odds.
