Unclaimed medals

phil dennett News Editor

A set of medals, thought to have been lost about the time of last year’s Remembrance, are still unclaimed at Horsham police station. They are thought to belong to a man who did his country great

service in uniform during and after the Second World War. Police have been trying for months to trace a likely owner or his family, but so far drawn a blank. The medals, which are miniatures, were handed in on November 14 having been found on the ground in the All Saints cemetery in Horsham. They are a 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, 19391945 War Medal, 1962 General Ser-

vice Medal ‘Malaya’ and Regular Army Medal. The 1939-45 Star was a military campaign medal started by the United Kingdom in 1943 to British Commonwealth subjects who saw service in the Second World War and was last awarded in 2013. The Italy Star was for the 19431945 Italian campaign to force the Germans out of Italy and included the savage Monte Cassino battle which claimed the lives of many

troops from the Royal Sussex County Regiment. To qualify for the 1939-45 War Medal a person had to serve full time for at least 28 days from 1939 to 1945. The General Service Medal combined several previous medals from First World War days and was replaced by the Operational Service Medal in 2007. Under its motto “Against Adversity” it was only awarded to those who took

Scrum halves became goal attackers as male rugby players took on female netballers. But it was girls who triumphed in the sports challenge for charity. Collyer’s students at Horsham have been taking part in a series of charity netball matches, to raise funds for the college’s Tanzania Project, which supports health and education projects in the Morogoro region of the country. The campaign ran throughout March and culminates in a fun-run in April. The boys rugby team played

the girls netball team over four matches, with the girls winning three games to one. Although the overall tally went in the girls favour, Business Studies teacher Clare Ruaux, who helped the Student College Council coordinate the event, was full of praise for the boys team. She said: “The boys had obviously practiced incredibly hard all week and were certainly competitive, adapted to the rules quickly, and often kept up with the incredibly fast pace

of the games. The girls ran out overwhelming winners, but a good time was had by all.” The Richard Collyer Union College Council representatives were on hand with their charity buckets, and encouraged the spectator donations to the Tanzania Project. Head of the Sports Academy at Collyer’s John Burroughs said: “It was a great atmosphere and the games were certainly competitive. Well done to everyone for supporting the event.”

Thanks to the many friends who contacted us with support, help or simply ‘good’ wishes Sunday JULY 9 …make a note in your Calendar for Horsham’s Big Family Day The two local charities Horsham Festival and Horsham Rotary Club are delighted to announce that they have saved Horsham’s wonderful July charity and family fun day (previously known as Sparks in the Park) that will take place on Sunday July 9th.

77-year-old interviewed about 70s and 80s sex case A 77-year-old man has been interviewed about a woman’s allegations that she sexually assaulted as a child in the Warnham area. Police said the man, living in Shrewsbury, was interviewed under caution, by appointment at Shrewsbury police station, by Sussex Police officers. They are investigating a report received in October 2016 that in the late 1970s and early 1980s a then 10 to 11-year old girl was sexually assaulted at two locations in Warnham, one of which was Warnham parish church. The man was not arrested and the investigation continues and police have asked for anyone who might be able to help their inquiry to contact them. As some of the alleged offending relates to Warnham parish church, Sussex Police are working closely with the Diocese of Chichester’s Safeguarding Team, who are actively supporting this investigation. Officers emphasise that there are no current safeguarding issues for the church or the local Warnham community in relation to the investigation. Detective Superintendent Jason Tingley of Sussex Police said; “If you have any information that would assist our investigation, including information about any other offences, please contact us via 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call Sussex 101, quoting Operation Adwell, and arrange to talk in confidence to experienced investigators.” You can also report online to https://sussex.police.uk/contactus/response-to-appeal/

More than 300 contest county council seats It will take an unprecedented change of fortune for the Conservatives to lose control of West Sussex County Council in May’s elections. More than 300 candidates will be contesting the elections on May 4 including candidates in Horsham district. But the opposition parties face a daunting task, despite their determination, because of the huge numerical advantage held by the Conservatives at County Hall, Chichester. The current constitution of the council shows the enormity of the challenge facing nonConservative candidates, despite the public’s unease about social care and education funding, which has provoked disagreement between the Tory-dominated county council and the Tory government. At present 43 Conservatives sit at Chichester, while UKIP has 10, the Liberal Democrats seven, Labour six, with three Independent members and two vacancies. The divisions within Horsham district are: BILLINGSHURST , covering the parishes of Billingshurst, Itchingfield and Shipley; BRAMBER CASTLE, covering Ashurst, Bramber, Henfield (Small Dole ward),

MP sees why park farm is magnet for children

Nick Herbert with Trina,Tim and Tom Rollings.

An MP saw why a farm park that is a favourite with children won a national award for its quality. Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert visited Fishers Farm Park in Wisborough Green to highlight the attraction of West Sussex during English Tourism Week. Mr Herbert was met by husband and wife owners Tim and Trina Rollings and their son Tom. Trina gave Mr Herbert a tour of the park and showed him how they have earned a ‘highly

commended’ award for the Best Farm Attraction UK 2017 in the recent National Farm Attractions Network Awards. Opened in 1990, the farm park has developed over the years to provide a vast range of indoor and outdoor activities. At the beginning of this year they opened the doors to three family-sized self-catering cottages on the site. Mr Herbert was also given a special tour of the newest attraction, planned to open next month, an indoor tree-house and

party barn. The popularity of the UK’s farm parks is a big tourism success story as farmers diversify. Nationally there are over 20 million visits annually to farm attractions, which in turn boosts the local economy. Fishers Farm Park employs more than 160 staff. Nigel Smith, Chief Executive at Tourism South East said: “Tourism in the South East of England is worth nearly £12 billion to the economy and supports over 400,000 jobs – it is the most visited region outside London and in terms of value is equivalent to Scotland and Wales combined. In 2016 the region saw increase in day visits and overnight stays from both domestic and overseas visitors – with very favourable exchange rates the expectations for 2017 are equally optimistic”. Nick Herbert said: “It was a pleasure to meet the Rollings family and to see the awardwinning farm park they have created. It is easy to see why it is such a popular destination for families with young children. “West Sussex is a fantastic county to visit with so much to offer. I am pleased to help promote our beautiful county, and the many local businesses which rely on tourism during English Tourism Week.”

Police appeal in hunt for Horsham criminal Graham Court wanted

Police issued an appeal for help in tracing a man jailed for theft and a knife offence in Horsham. Sussex Police said that Graham Court, 52, was wanted on recall to prison and it was believed that he might be in the Horsham or Worthing areas. He is described as white, 6’, of ‘skinny’ build, with brown, slightly greying hair with a distinctive widow’s peak. Police say he is wanted having failed to adhere to the terms of his

licence following his release from prison in March, where he was serving a six month sentence for theft and possessing a knife blade in a public place. Both happened in Horsham. Anyone who knows of his whereabouts is asked to report online to https://sussex.police.uk/ contact-us/response-to-appeal/ or call 101 quoting serial 938 of 22/03. Lia’s Fish Deli - A great new addition Horsham!

Lucky Horsham has a new Deli – and it is unique! Giovanni Patane has just opened his Lia’s Fish Deli in the inner Carfax, near the bus stand. As well as a comprehensive range of fresh fish, the catch of the day from Newhaven, Giovanni also provides local sausages and meat and there are mouth watering delicacies on offer – including kippers, smoked eel and lump fish roe. Barbecue ready items feature delicious skewers of prawn and tomato, and monk fish and choriza. There are jellied eels, roasted seaweed, the oven ready Sicilian speciality of swordfish rolled in cheese and herbs, even more exotic fare, and, among the many sauces and the pates on display, there

What I really want to do is to contribute in the local community Etna volcano and matured by the sea at Sicily’s iconic Catania Fish Market, honing his skills in the trade there to become, here, a much coveted Member of the Federation of Fishmongers. He continues: “Horsham is a bit different from Sicily - but, I love it! I enjoy selling my fish

in Horsham market on Thursdays and Saturdays and feel very comfortable here. I’m looking forward to developing the business, possibly with some outside catering, but, the main thing is to really establish the shop first and then to progress step by step from there. What I really want to do is to contribute in the local community – we’ve got the big Easter Piazza Italia event coming up and it will be fantastic to be involved with that!” Giovanni is an experienced chef, having earned his spurs at a variety of events across the UK, so apart from expertly gutting and preparing your fish while you wait he is more than happy to give culinary tips and advice. And, Lia’s Fish Deli is a family concern – Lia is Giovanni’s mother – and independent businesses, so much part of Horsham’s heritage, are an endangered species, so customers are enthusiastically welcoming Giovanni’s enticing new venture, which is open six days a week (until 6pm from Tuesdays to Friday). Make sure that it is on your “must visit soon” list – you will want to make it a very regular experience! Lia’s Fish Deli, 52 Carfax, Horsham RH12 1EQ – 01403 588702 – www.liasfish.co.uk

Tres bon and bellisimo for Steyning’s big day Crowds pack town

The spirit of Easter went to the heads of children at a Horsham school. These youngsters used their artistic skills to create colourful bonnets in keeping with the season. Farlington’s Prep School pupils took part in the annual Easter Bonnet Parade in the school’s New Courtyard Hall on the last day of term before starting the Easter break. Frances Mwale, the prep headmistress, was impressed at the creative standard of the

entries and said: “There were

There were some highly original creations and a great deal of effort was on display some highly original creations and a great deal of effort was on display.”Mrs Mwale awarded prizes for the best bonnet in each year group.

Big crowds turned out for Steyning’s mix of a French market and sleek Italian cars. The roar of powerful engines heralded the arrival of the gleaming cars. The parking marshall, Garry Mortimer-Cook, had quite a task on hand, making sure the

cars parked up allowing enough room for the crowds to be able to walk round and inspect the magnificent vehicles. Organisers say it seemed the 45- minute stopover was over all too quickly, and it was time to release the mighty machines

and send them on their way to Henfield, the last port of call for the District Rally. With such a warm continental flavour and great atmosphere it was all a tasty appetiser for Horsham’s Piazza Italia , which takes place this weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Monday.

Youngsters with disabilities are benefitting from a link between a bank and a charity. Their Springboard Project has been chosen as TSB’s new local charity partner in Horsham. TSB Horsham organised a free prize draw to win a 1.25kg Easter egg donated by Cocoa Loco, the local organic chocolate firm, raising £264.33 for the charity. Nigel Scott-Dickeson, chief executive officer at The Springboard Project, said: “It’s fantastic that a high street bank is supporting local charities in this way. “The support that TSB gives us

will be invaluable, helping us to support young people and children with disabilities to lead an active lifestyle.” In total, TSB is supporting nearly 500 local causes from across Britain, chosen from over 25,000 nominations from customers, members of the general public and Partners who work for the Bank. Jason Watson, bank manager at TSB’s Horsham branch, said: “The Springboard Project is a local cause that’s close to people hearts here in Horsham and we are delighted to welcome them as our

community better than the people who live there. That is why each year the bank asks local people to nominate a local cause that they would like them to partner with. TSB’s first Local Charity Partnerships came to an end in June 2016, and the bank and its local communities have already donated more than £1 million to causes across Britain since the programme began. In May 2016, TSB announced a new five year partnership with Pride of Britain and Pride of Sport. The partnership celebrates ordinary people, like those working in local charities, doing extraordinary things in local communities all over the country.

Mystery of why rider crashed to death

A motor cyclist from Rudgwick died when his machine crashed on the A272. Investigators are trying to discover what might have made the rider run off the road and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Police say the 53-year-old was killed when his BMW motorcycle left the road and crashed into trees on the A272 while travelling between Billingshurst and Petworth early on Sunday morning. The incident happened about 150 metres east of the main road’s junction with Crimbourne Lane, near Wisborough Green at about 7.20am. The man died from his injuries at the scene. Police closed the

A272 for more than six hours while emergency services dealt with and investigated the crash. No other vehicle was involved. Anyone who saw what happened or who noticed the blue motorcycle being ridden on the A272 before it leaving the road is asked to report details online at https://sussex.police.uk/contact-us/response-to-appeal/, quoting Operation Cassidy. They can also email collision. appeal@sussex.pnn.police or phone 101. A report will be submitted to the West Sussex coroner for an inquest to be opened into the man’s death, and will include police findings into a possible cause.

Youngsters praised after learning with fire crews The latest 12 young people to tackle the FireBreak challenge have successfully graduated. They received awards of achievement from Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Gavin Watts of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Their efforts were recognised at the pass out parade attended by their family and friends. During the parade, the students performed various drills that they have learnt throughout the course. The youngsters spent five consecutive days with fire station workers learning a variety of new skills including ladder and breathing apparatus drills,

HeartStart first aid training and communication skills. Handing over the awards Mr Watts said: “The FireBreak scheme is something we take very seriously in West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service because of the opportunities it gives these young people. Talking to them today they say they’ve learnt teamwork, grown in confidence and some have overcome their fears.” Simon Woodland, Lead FireBreak Instructor said: “This group of students has shown a real aptitude. It’s been a pleasure to see them perform so well during their parade today, and I’m sure their families and friends are just as proud of their achievements as

we are.” Special awards were given to Joe Roberts and Chandler Merritt for their commitment to team objectives. Chandler Merritt, FireBreak graduate said: “The course was really good. My favourite part was using the hose reels to spray water, it was exciting and an experience that not many people my age get to have. “I had not heard about FireBreak courses before, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone.” If you would like to find out more information on FireBreak courses please visit: http://ow.ly/ o00h30aorxv

Youngsters map out success in geography finals Concentrating hard

Pupils from Millais School in Horsham took part in the final of the national African Adventures School Geography Challenge. They were one of nine school teams competing at Weekes Community Centre in Slough to compete for the prize of a trip to Kenya for four students and two teachers. The organisers say it was an amazing achievement for the finalist schools to reach this stage of the competition after nearly 200 schools registered to participate in the challenge.

Students from Millais joined the eight other schools for an all-day activity working in their school teams of four to complete a task focused on sustainable development. The task specifically focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which is to ‘ensure inclusive and quality education for all and to promote lifelong learning’. All schools came to the challenge full of enthusiasm and the judges were very impressed with the students’ efforts with some outstanding submissions being

produced. An excellent day was had all round and the judging panel now have a difficult decision to make on which team has performed on top, all to be announced very soon. Throughout the competition, students have been broadening their knowledge on international development and the challenges faced by emerging countries and in particular, Kenya. The finalist schools now wait in anticipation for the announcement on who has been successful in winning the ultimate prize trip to Kenya. The winning school will then choose four students and two teachers to travel to Kenya to volunteer at one of African Adventures’ partner projects in Kenya. The group will get to see first-hand the challenges the communities in Nakuru, the town in which African Adventures works, face on a daily basis. To find out more about African Adventures and their school volunteer trips to Africa, please contact Joe Pearson, Marketing Manager, at African Adventures on joe@african-adventures.co.uk or phone the African Adventures team on 02381 780957.

The girls, aged ten and eleven, spent the day in Victorian dress and discovered what it was like to be a Victorian school child. They read lessons from a Victorian reading book and they learnt how to sew for their sampler. Lunch consisted of pasties, sandwiches, fruit and biscuits and at break they were able to roll hoops,

Home furnishing exhibition opens at Horsham

Two centuries of home furnishing are dusted off in an exhibition running in Horsham

Museum. Home Sweet Home runs until June 24 and admission is free.

The museum said: “An elephant’s foot pad as a tray, delicate leaf skeletons, and religious embroideries can only sum up one period - whilst white blank walls, hard surfaces and nothing else can only mean another: yet both are homes, although one hundred years apart as the fascinating temporary exhibition Home Sweet Home: 200 years of home furnishings reveals. Drawing on the museum’s extensive collections, this amazing exhibition is a real eye-opener as it encourages the visitor to question their own journey in making a house or room into a home. Why do we buy that particular lamp or cushion, and why do we go for that look - what are we trying to say about ourselves? For over 200 years, manufacturers have been making things that people have bought to create their homes - designs are imagined, sold as an aspiration, and

the customer buys it and in turn, the dream of the stylish interior. To help with that, modern retailers such as Dunelm have created a desirable ‘look’, a selfcontained off-the-shelf package. Yet as the exhibition shows, 100 years ago Horsham had its own Victorian designer who created a ‘look’. Thomas Honywood - who used the then marvel of photography - created fabrics, wallpaper, picture frames and even tiles with his unique exquisite fern images, and sold a powerful image to nature-loving Victorians. The exhibition uses the often neglected probate lists - legal documents drawn up on the death of an individual listing out contents of each room. In the early 18th century there was quite simply less ‘stuff’ in the home. But thanks to growing wealth, manufacturing and fashion, the lists grew longer and longer - and by the early Edwardian period they are almost book-length, describing in fascinating detail the home furnishings of local houses. Home Sweet Home reveals the ingenuity and diversity of items that people bought to create a home, a space they had control over and could call their own. The exhibition looks at how chairs have changed both shape and materials, from a gothic-style hall chair to the wicker plastic twotone 1960s chair. As technology changed,

it shows how homes were lit, how we spent leisure time with polyphones to record players to radios, or soft furnishings from table cloths hand embroidered to quilts, to curtains and drapes the exhibition will feature them all. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery are delighted to announce that Dunelm, who have recently opened in Horsham, are sponsoring the exhibition Home Sweet Home: 200 years of home furnishings. As Dunelm’s upto-date catalogue shows, colour and objects are now flooding back in to the home, continuing a 200 year old tradition where people want to be surrounded by items (compared to that recent blip of minimalism): Home Sweet Home reflects how what might be considered as ‘stuff’ becomes that magical ingredient that makes a house a home.” Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 105pm, admission is free. Scenes from the exhibition are pictured.

Volunteering Opportunities through Horsham and Mid Sussex Voluntary Action Horsham Girlguides are seeking helpers to act as an extra pair of hands at evening sessions for Rainbows (girls from five to seven years of age) from 4pm onwards, and for Brownies (girls from seven to ten years of age) after 5pm. Required commitment would be for about one and a half hours a week, term time only. Phoenix Stroke Club in Comptons Lane, Horsham is hoping to find an Activities and Communication Helper to socialise with club members, plan and lead activities, make tea and coffee or cook lunch. The club meets from Monday to Thursday, and as much or as little time that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy is searching for volunteers who could distribute, collect and keep an electronic record of donation boxes in shops and other organisations and

also for someone to distribute leaflets to GP surgeries, hospitals, Child & Family Centres, nurseries, libraries, garden centres and leisure centres. East Clayton Farm in Washington exists to support people in need and to help them overcome difficult issues. The charity is looking for a Farm Helper who could undertake practical tasks such as tree planting, digging, fencing, painting and other DIY tasks. They would love someone who is able to work unsupervised, has practical DIY experience and enjoys carpentry and gardening. Experience of working with vulnerable people would be desirable. For more information and other volunteering opportunities, please contact Horsham and Mid Sussex Voluntary Action by phone: 01444 258102; email: volunteercentre@hamsva.org.uk, or visit: www.hamsva.org.uk

45 years ago. And they came within one match of copying s a famous Aring Thing limb senal FC team that went through the season 2003-4 unbeaten and earned the nickname The Invincibles. This was itself a reference to the all-conquering Preston

team of 1888-89, which won the first organised Football League and also the FA Cup unbeaten in a total of 27 matches. In contrast Arsenal played 38 matches to win their league title. The modern-day Christ’s Hospital team, captained by Sean Thomson, played a stylish brand of attacking football built on wellorganised defending, becoming Champions of the Sussex and Kent Independent Schools League. Their record was played 14, Won 11, Drawn 3, Lost 1. Paul Deller, Head of Football at Christ’s Hospital, said: “ Scoring 45 goals and only conceding 12 highlighted their ability to win over the opposition with flair, as well as close them out with clinical ruthlessness. In doing so, Sam Winsbury also set a new first eleven goal scoring record, with 20 goals from centre midfield. There were no weak links and each and every player was multi-talented and we always had options to play each of them in a range of positions. We have encouraged them to play with ‘class’ and, in doing so, they have set a standard for future Christ’s Hospital teams of all ages to aspire to.”

the-job training through an apprenticeship to meet a wide range of employers eager to recruit and grow their organisations. Once again there will be bitesize workshops designed to help people improve their employability skills and job prospects. Additionally employers will have the opportunity to sit down with prospective employees in the café (with cake!) to discuss opportunities. filled as a result of the day, with over 1000 local people attending. Seven New Horsham Businesses Get Set for Success! On Saturday March 25th a group of seven newly launched businesses in Horsham met for a day of learning and sharing of experiences at the “Business Launchpad Workshop.” The businesses ranged from childcare provision to boiler installation! But they were united in their desire to learn, implement and succeed! The Business Launchpad workshop is run by three local business owners who have seen a gap in the provision of help and advice for local small businesses in recent years. The Business Launchpad is designed to fill this gap by delivering the information they need and by providing a support network. Local MP Jeremy Quin has a special interest in boosting local business and he popped in to talk with the attendees and to find out more about the small business scene in Horsham. Overlooking a very sunny and busy Carfax the workshop exuded a really positive vibe as attendees learned about Business Basics, Managing their Money, Getting and Keeping Customers and Planning for the Growth of their business in a resilient and profitable way. All the business owners who attended felt that the day had been extremely useful and

enjoyable. Not least in the opportunity it gave them to meet with other local entrepreneurs and share their experiences. Running your own business can be an emotional rollercoaster and it was good to talk with other small business owners in a relaxed and supportive environment. The workshop is organised and presented by local business owners, Chris Cooper of Seofon Business Services, Marie Allen of Web Clarity and Jenny Edwards of Jenny Edwards Business Coaching. All three are passionate about helping local small businesses succeed! The event was held at the newly opened Horsham Coworking space in the Carfax where business owners can rent a desk for a day or longer. Getting away from the many distractions of working from home and benefitting from interaction with other business owners. More information on the Business Launchpad workshops can be found on our Facebook page horshambusinesslaunchpad. You can also email us at info@seofon.co.uk or call us on 01403 259208. More information on Horsham Coworking can be found at the Horsham Coworking website or email hello@horshamcoworking.co.uk

Westlake House Nursing Home celebrates start of a new era

Westlake House in Pondtail Road, Horsham, held an Open Day on April 1 to celebrate the start of a new era, following significant investment in the home. Many visitors, including local MP Jeremy Quin, were welcomed

to view the home’s stylish new interior and take a tour of Westlake. The home’s hospitality team provided complimentary refreshments and a tasty spread of snacks and freshly baked cakes.

Jon, McDevitt, one of the regular entertainers at the home, who is very popular with all, provided music. All enjoyed his performance, singing along to some favourite tunes and accompanied by his guitar. Staff, including the home’s General Manager, were on hand to answer questions to do with finding the right home, as well as the services that Westlake House has to offer. Elizabeth Higson, General Manager at Westlake, who has been at the home for nearly 20 years, said: “The home is looking better than ever, after the recent investment, and it was a pleasure to showcase the elegant new interior at the open day and welcome so many new faces. We also had some friends to the home who had parents with us previously come in and have a look at the new look. “My door is always open and anyone who couldn’t make the Open Day is very welcome to drop by for a cup of tea and a look around on any other day instead.”

At the 30 minute weekly themed sessions, children are encouraged to get creative, develop a love for music, make new friends, move more and sing as loud as they can - allowing their imaginations to run wild, as they go on a voyage of discovery, learning about the World around them and colours of the rainbow. Tom Fotheringham, General Manager at Pavilions In The Park, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this exciting new programme

to encourage more children to move more and help them to become more active, more often, whilst enjoying plenty of active fun. Parents and guardians are also invited to join in on the fun during the sessions, so that they too can be a part of the experience.” Glen Staiteloveridge, Places for People Leisure’s Young Person and Physical Literacy Manager, said: “Wiggle and Jiggle has been designed to encourage young children to move more and take part in imaginary play. “At Places for People Leisure, we recognise the importance of play, as it not only improves physical activity, it also helps children to learn through working with others, building friendships and confidence.”

Triple bill comedy at The Capitol

The much-loved and acclaimed Baroque Theatre Company will soon embark on their forthcoming summer tour, which will see them perform a Comedy Triple Bill in a staggering 28 venues across England, and it stops off in Horsham next month. The Comedy Triple Bill features three short plays in one hilarious evening of fast-paced performances from an all female cast. Audiences can expect an evening of laughs of West End quality, as they follow the characters’ journey through each play. The performance starts with Last Tango in Little Grimley, written by David Tristram, one of the UK’s most popular and respected playwrights. Membership of the local amateur dramatic society has dwindled to four and the audiences aren’t much bigger. If they don’t come up with some rent money soon, they’re going to be thrown out. Time for dramatic action. “There’s only one thing that sells tickets these days” argues the Chairwoman. “Sex!”

But how will the locals react to the promise of a sizzling sex comedy? All is revealed and thus begins the chaotic build-up to an evening of extraordinary home-grown drama - an evening the locals would never forget. The second play, A Jolly Sinister Jape, by writer Elliot Strange, is a pastiche 1920’s thriller with a plot that almost defies description. This is Famous Five fun for adults, as Stubby, Ophelia, Biffy and Fatty find themselves trapped in a mysterious house during a thunderstorm. Fast and furious with a liberal sprinkling of hilarious period slang, along with mystery and thrills - Is this someone’s idea of a jape, or is something far more sinister going on? The evening ends with David Tristram’s Last Panto in Little Grimley. This sequel to Last Tango in Little Grimley, features the same incompetent characters and sees the society members tackle the Christmas Pantomime with predictable riotous results. The cast features Baroque

Theatre Company founder and actress Claire Bibby from Kent, Plymouth born Patricia Derrick, Talitha Willsea from Norwich and Hampshire born Sally Blouet who makes her Baroque Theatre Company debut. Claire Bibby commented: “We’re so looking forward to taking these hilarious plays to some really exciting venues reaching audiences across England. This is Baroque Theatre Company’s 16th tour and I’m particularly excited this year that the playwright David Tristram has given permission for Adam Morley, our Artistic Director, to adapt the dialogue for the all female cast.” Adam Morley, Artistic Director added: “After 7 years of audience and company growth, and 16 UK tours, Baroque Theatre Company and I are delighted to return to

We’re so looking forward to taking these hilarious plays to some really exciting venues reaching audiences across England our comedy roots. I’m especially honoured to revive this hugely successful Comedy Triple Bill bringing to the stage a show in the mould of a classic British sitcom and a homage to the greats of UK comedy, including Fawlty Towers, The Vicar of Dibley, Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses. Sit back and enjoy.” Performance: Friday 19 May at 7.45pm, Tha Capitol Studio, Horsham. Tickets available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

The Hawth celebrates the music of the great David Bowie

The Hawth will be celebrating the music of the great David Bowie on Friday 28 April, with the appearance of the UK’s number one Bowie tribute act, Jean Genie. Performing a dazzling array of hits from 1979 through to the present day, including the Ziggy Stardust era to the Thin White

Duke years, organisers promise the audience a night to remember, featuring Bowie hits, such as Space Oddity, Starman, Jean Genie, Let’s Dance, Modern Love, Ashes to Ashes and many more. Jean Genie is fronted by John Mainwaring, a recording artist in his own right, who, having been signed by numerous record com-

panies throughout his career, has also worked with Bowie’s producer, Tony Visconti. John was invited by David Bowie’s most famous band of the 1970s, ‘The Spiders from Mars’ and was asked by them if he’d front the band and tour with them. His answer was an obvious ‘Yes’ and John remains one of only a few tribute artists to tour and perform with an original artist’s band. Having toured extensively around the world (playing the character of Ziggy Stardust for over 5 years), these days, John prides himself on the quality of his singing voice, mannerisms and overall style of David Bowie. Performance: Fri 28 April 7.30pm, The Hawth Theatre. Tickets priced £22 are available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: hawth.co.uk

Bowlers to hold open days Bowls Billingshurst Bowling Club opens for the 2017 season on Saturday April 22 at 2.00 pm when the club invites anyone interested to come along and have a try, no experience necessary. Alternatively, the invite extends for the open evenings starting on Friday April 28 and from then on all Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays in May from 6.00 - 7.30pm; all equipment will be supplied. The club is situated behind the Station Road Gardens with access through the Leisure Centre Car Park, then via south end of swim-

ming pool; the club has a large visible sign. Further information can be obtained from Club Captain Barry on 01403 780330, Vice-Captain Alan 01798 875737 or Club Chairman Keith 01403 784599 or visit the club website at www.billingshurstbowlingclub.co.uk. Storrington Bowls Club are also inviting anyone wishing to take up the game of bowls to come along on either Saturday April 29, Sunday April 30, Saturday May 6 or Sunday May 7, at 10 a.m. when all that is required is a flat pair of soft shoes. In preparation for the opening of their outdoor season Storrington

arranged a friendly indoor match against Shoreham, who had played indoor bowls regularly throughout the winter, compared with Storrington’s spasmodic games. Two of the four Storrington teams soon realised the effort required as Stuart McGeachie’s team lagged 7 -14 and Peter Smith’s team lagged 2 – 14 by the tea-break at the end of the 10th end. Peter Newman’s team, however, was leading 8-7 and Geoff Page, last year’s captain, and his team were in contention at 8-10. Despite a strong finish by Storrington they finally went down 114 – 49 however some good preseason practice was had by all.

Hawks teams reach Sussex play-offs Hawks U16 team

Basketball Horsham Hawks U16 61 – 59 SRWA Bears U16 Hawks U16s concluded their season with 2 games in 5 days needing to win both to make the play-offs. The first game was against SRWA Bears who featured an England Junior International in their team. Hawks got off to a sensational start that never allowed Bears to settle and finished the first quarter 25-9 in the lead. The second quarter was much more even and low scoring although good play from Kieran Lee and George Makin ensured Hawks maintained a healthy lead finishing the second quarter 40 – 23 to the good.

Bears turned the tables in the third quarter and dominated the play reducing Hawks lead to a single point going into the final quarter. Bears took the lead for the first time in the match but Hawks replied before the match score fluctuated between the two sides until a last second basket from Ollie Hutt kept the play-off hopes alive with a 61 – 59 victory. D&D Dunkers U16 69 – 74 Horsham Hawks U16 In the second of the matches Hawks faced D&D Dunkers away in Worthing. Again Hawks opened brightly with Josh Raby excellent at both ends of the court but Dunkers responded to leave the score a tight 20-18 to Hawks at the end

of Q1. The second quarter was a tight contest finishing 17-17 which kept Hawks slender 2 point lead intact at 37-35. Q3 saw a good Hawks with Makin and Raby both on the scoresheet but Dunkers again rallied although at the end of the quarter the Hawks lead had increased to 5 points at 55-50. The final Quarter was an epic battle with both teams trading baskets but as the match came to a close Lee scored 4 unanswered points to put Hawks up by 5. Hawks were than able to run down the clock to win an absorbing contest 74-69 and seal a place in the play-offs. Horsham Hawks U14 63-93 Eastbourne Lions U14 The U14 Horsham Hawks fell short in their final league fixture of the season to the Eastbourne Lions 93-63. Q1 saw a slow start from Hawks that allowed Lions to go into Q2 27-17 ahead. During an eight minute spell in the second quarter the Hawks put together a 23-11 run to take the lead 40-38. In the second half however Hawks were unable to sustain this level of intensity and Lions went on to a big win allowing them to pull level on points with Horsham in the Sussex league table. Horsham will now wait on the outcome of other remaining fixtures to determine whether they will face Crawley or Haywards Heath in the County Cup semifinal.

Horsham’s away day adventure brings home a win Hornets’ away day supporters celebrate with Tom Lawley after he had equalised

Steve Metcalfe and keeper Josh Pelling make a goal line clearance

Photos byJohn Lines Ryman League Division One South Guernsey 2 – 3 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham overcame relegation threatened Guernsey in the sunshine of the Channel Islands with goals from Tom Lawley, Darren Boswell and Steve Metcalf. In what is one of Horsham’s most eagerly awaited fixtures of the season, once again a large number of Hornets supporters made the flight ‘across the water’ to vivaciously cheer on the team;

the positive result adding to the wonderful day out. After a lively opening from Horsham in which Steve Metcalf shot just wide and home ‘keeper Leroi Riley saved well from Scott Kirkwood the Islanders went ahead with only their second attack. A pinpoint cross from Craig Young to the back post was met by Dom Heaume who, unchallenged, headed into the net from close range with 12 minutes played. Horsham battled to get back into the match but were not creating much in the way of chances. The better of the chances fell to the home side and opening

goal scorer Heaume should have double his and his teams tally when once again in loads of space he headed over from a few yards out. The failure to convert one of their chances was punished just before the break when Guernsey lost possession deep in the Horsham half from where Tony Nwachukwu and Boswell broke away before the ball was played to Tom Lawley who slotted past Riley to equalise. The late first half goal buoyed the Hornets and they came out looking the better side from the restart. A desperate clearance from Jacob Fallaize prevented Kirkwood from giving Horsham the lead, but the reprieve was short lived. A Horsham free kick was tapped to Boswell who hit a low effort that inexplicably the whole defence watched fly past them before going in off the post. Desperate for the win that would ensure safety from relegation Guernsey picked up the pace and as they pushed forward Craig Young was denied by a superb double save from Horsham ‘keeper Josh Pelling. The hosts ascendancy was brought to a sharp stop however when on 53 minutes Metcalf collected the ball 25 yards out and bent a vicious drive past Riley and into the top corner giving Horsham a two goal buffer. The Hornets dominated the play following the third goal and had chances to add to their total with substitute James Thurgar denied by Riley, Lawley smashing a shot against the post and Riley again saving well, this time from Kirkwood. A ray of hope for Guernsey came with 4 minutes remaining when the Hornets defence were again hesitant in the air allowing Fallaize to nod down to substitute Ross Allen who poked the ball into the net. There was still time for Guernsey’s Sam Cochrane to pick up a second yellow card which effectively put an end to any hopes of an equaliser. With three matches of the season remaining Horsham host Sittingbourne at Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday 15).

Rock bottom Hailsham give Heath a scare SCFL Premier Division Hailsham Town 2 - 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Heath had to fight back from 2-0 down at half-time to come away with a point from their trip to bottom of the table Hailsham but this was really a case of two points dropped as the Bears failed to capitalize on numerous chances. After an early attempt by Marcus Goldsmith was pushed over the bar by Michael Chester Heath then dominated the play for the next half hour. Without the heroics from home ‘keeper Sheldon Levett Heath would have killed the match off early. He closed down Jamal Sultan forcing him to shoot wide before saving Chris Copestake’s 25 yard pile-driver and 10 minutes before the break the keeper dived to push away Jake Holmes’ effort after the Heath player had been put through by Jermaine Beer.

Then totally against the run of play Hailsham striker Connor Townsend collected the ball 30 yards out and with his back to goal, turned and hammered an unstoppable drive past Chester for a shock lead. Marlon Maxwell was then guilty of failing to grab an equaliser when he headed past the post. The miss was immediately punished by the lively Townsend whose scuffed shot deceived Chester before rolling into the corner of the net. On the stroke of half time Heath again should have scored when somehow top scorer Holmes put the ball over the bar when it was easier to score. That was Holmes’ last piece of action as the striker did not appear for the second half due to injury; Stuart Chester moved from centre-half to centreforward to fill the strikers role. Chester settled straight in and fired narrowly over as Heath continued to dominate possession in the second period but all without hitting the net. The constant pressure paid off eventually when

after 55 minutes Maxwell bundled Dan Sandell’s cross over the line after a scramble. The goal however did not open the floodgates and while dominating possession Heath failed to convert the chances they kept creating as Levett continued to have an excellent game between the posts. With 10 minutes remaining Heath were given a lifeline when referee Andrew Senior awarded a dubious penalty when Shaun Findlay went down in the area and Sultan placed the spot kick past Levett for the equaliser. Two further good chances to grab a winner fell the way of Chester and Robinson but at the final whistle Hailsham had taken an unlikely point, only their eighth of the whole campaign. Heath Manager Steve Painter said “Having been 2-0 down at half-time I’m pleased we got something out of it but realistically we had enough chances to have won that game about 8-2, I don’t remember ever having seen a game when we created so many chances”.

Broadbridge Heath Reserves crowned champions Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath Football Club won the Southern Combination Football League Reserve Division in their last league game of the season following a 3-0 home win over Mile Oak. Heath’s goals were scored by Andy Howard, Jack McNab and Jahobi Maher. It has been a long hard season for Heath reserves after being unbeaten in

the league and cruising to the Championship until the New Year when player availability for the first & reserve teams suddenly left the team short of experienced players. A number of the U18s stepped up to the reserves and did themselves and the club proud. With the league season now ended, there is still a possibility of further silverware when the reserves travel to play Haywards Heath Town in the League Cup semi-final.

Palmer’s race disrupted again at Chinese GP Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer and the Renault Sport Formula One Team endured a frustrating Chinese Grand Prix with Southwater’s Palmer finishing 13th, one place and 2 seconds behind his team mate Nico Hülkenberg. The 56 lap race, held at the Shanghai International Circuit, was filled with incidents and interruptions that hindered both Palmer and Hülkenberg. After a decent qualifying performance the day before, an incident on the track early in the race required a virtual safety car which then prevented both the Renault drivers coming in for a scheduled early pit stop for dry tyres.

After starting from position 20 on the grid and making it to 13th despite the issues Palmer said commented: “It was a difficult race. We made the right call to pit at the end of the formation lap but I hit a wet patch when racing a Toro Rosso, then the tyres lost temperature under the virtual safety car, so it was a very difficult first stint. On the plus side, the car ran reliably and I have a race distance under my belt now. Now we reset and head to Bahrain with the objective of a much better weekend.” Palmer does not have long to wait too try to better the Chinese result as they are back in action at the Bahrain International Circuit this weekend with the race taking part on Sunday 16.

Misfortune again hit Jolyon Palmer

Jubilant Pulborough promoted as champions Pulborough beat Lewis to become champions

Champions Pulborough celebrate their success

Photos by Di Game London 3 South East Pulborough 19 - 10 Lewes Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Not content with promotion, Boro won the league, but it was mighty close. Boro beat Lewes fair and square, yet drawing the previous Saturday meant Haywards Heath could steal the league title. And, Heath were playing lowly Gillingham Anchorians. Boro needed a bonus point win to be uncatchable, Lewes, though, prevented that. An early Boro penalty sank in the tricky cross wind, then

a ball bounced away on the line, but Boro were rewarded after 15 minutes when Dan Bullock completed a pushover try converted by Frazer Oliphant-Hope. Then, Will Scrase broke away to score under the posts, again Frazer obliging. Boro defended a series of scrums, until Lewes ran down the right for a try, the conversion and a subsequent Lewes penalty going begging, Boro leading 14-5 at the break. Heath were 13-5 up at the end of their first half. With Boro’s title looking vulnerable a long run stopped short, until Scrase grabbed the ball to score in the left corner, the kick failing. Boro threatened

but Lewes blocked before notching up an unconverted try against the run of play. A Frazer fly kick was not gathered and a close quarter Boro scrum evaporated, the game finishing in a 19-10 home win. Gliders soared overhead as if in a fly past, but had Boro done enough? The large crowd milled around nervously with technology unable to discover Heath’s score. Then, after 20 minutes, up went the shout: “We’ve done it!” Heath had won, but without the vital bonus point. Boro took the league by the narrowest of margins, but with 18 wins from 22 starts and 113 more points than Heath they were

Dolcetti hat-trick sends YM to defeat

A hat-trick from Lorenzo Dolcetti defeated YM SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 - 3 Chichester City Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor The disappointing season that Horsham YMCA has suffered is now coming to an end, and it probably cannot come too soon for manager Peter Buckland and his team. The four matches now remaining have no importance other than pride for YM but with a visit to

league leaders Shoreham tomorrow (Saturday 15) and second placed Haywards Heath Town visiting Gorings Mead on the final day (Saturday 29) the last few results will have a bearing elsewhere. The difference between the sides in this match came in front of goal as although the chances were reasonably proportioned between the two teams City had a striker in Lorenzo Dolcetti who finished the opportunities that came his way, with Dolcetti grabbing a hat-trick. Dolcetti got things underway as soon as the 6th minute when

he pounced after some chaotic defending from YM gave the striker time and space to put his team into the lead. The play then swept from end to end with opportunities for YM falling to Sam Schaaf, Phil Johnson and Dan Evans while Ben Pashley went close for City and Dolcetti was a constant threat. Then on 33 minutes referee Homewood awarded YM a heavily disputed penalty that ended up with City’s Ellis Martin being shown a red card for dissent. Dan Evans stepped up to convert the penalty kick past City ‘keeper Dave Hook and YM were back on level terms. Against the 10 men YM pressed for the lead but despite a good chance for Schaaf the teams went in at the break at 1-1. Chichester’s 10 men came out looking the more determined and went on to have the better of the second half despite being a man down, showing just why they sit third in the table. The visitors retook the lead in the 65th minute when Dolcetti clinically finished off a good flowing City move and then the striker completed his hat-trick, and a comfortable win for his well-organised team, with 10 minutes remaining.

worthy winners. Boro President Alex Steele told the District Post: “It’s been a rollercoaster! First we got up into this league and then we dropped out but bounced straight back up and now this! Fantastic! With the spirit and talent we’ve got, we’re on the right track. Now it’s celebration time!” Head Coach Clayton Saunders said: “We won our first nine games that really got us going. We’ve a good squad and just need to work on one or two things.” Boro Captain Simon Burfiend added: “It was so tense and frustrating at the end of this game, but we did it! Next season in London SE2 we’ll really

concentrate on winning our home games and build from there.” Club Captain Guy Baxter told us: “Pre-season we targeted progression to third – one better than last time. After last week’s draw I thought we’d let the league slip through our fingers – the outcome is beyond our wildest dreams. Delightful!” Frazer OliphantHope summed up with: “It’s been a really long hard season but we’ve had tremendous support and it’s been brilliant.” Next season Pulborough join Horsham in London SE2 league. Eastbourne and Ashford are relegated.

Horsham seventh in league with a cup final to come London 2 South East Beckenham 36 - 21 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham hoped to round off their league campaign with a win, especially as they had pushed Beckenham very close at home in September, but it was not to be. They kept in touch for most of the game – after 50 minutes they were just a single point adrift – until they faded again in the latter stages. The hosts kicked an early penalty, but by seven minutes Horsham were four points ahead after Joe Wilde’s try and Captain Tom Johnson’s conversion. Beckenham, though, soon restored their lead, by 22-7, following three tries, two converted. Will Bell got over the line for Horsham, again Johnson doing the necessary, but Horsham trailed 22-14 at the break. However, Beckenham were kept at bay before Rob Grantham-Hill got Horsham’s third try, Johnson’s kick almost levelling the score, until the Kent side added 14 more points, two converted tries sealing Horsham’s fate.

With a number of players moving on pre-season, Horsham even feared the possibility of relegation, so to finish seventh is no disgrace, Head Coach Nick Stocker telling the District Post: “We’ve got a great conveyor belt of talent coming through – in two or three years’ time the young lads that we’ve had to blood in the first team will be really strong players. And, next season we’re expecting to have one or two experienced hands returning to our ranks, which will really boost our fire power”. Horsham’s league season is over, but they still have an important game to play, albeit after a long wait - on Saturday May 27 they travel to East Grinstead for their fourth consecutive Bob Rogers Cup final, having won the last three – against Lewes, Crowborough and Hove. Horsham meet Hove again in the May final, having beaten them at the seaside in September’s league game but subsequently losing to them at home, Hove finishing sixth. Runaway leaders Medway are promoted with Old Colfeians, while Bromley and Crowborough are relegated.
