Horsham revelled in three days of Italian-themed attractions

over the Easter break.

Thousands threw themselves into the spirit of the 10th Piazza Italia festival held on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday and organised by Horsham District Council.

Gleaming Italian cars with legendary names like Maserati

Nightingale Road, Horsham

La Piazzetta

and Ferrari fascinated the motor fans that flocked to the Carfax and other areas of the town.

Cooking fans relished the demonstrations by experts and also enjoyed the huge range of produce and food on sale during the continental showcase.

But , as Horsham Museum reminds us,in April 1879, it was foot power that dominated Good Friday.

Today it is state-of-the-art cars, their wealthy owners in designer fashion; then it was some characters of Horsham in homemade clothing. Then it was a sketch artist capturing the moment; thisyear, it is stunning photography. The museum said: “Thanks to the art of Tom Charman and Henry Burstow’s Reminiscences, we have a fascinating account of the Good Friday Race of April 1879.

This they once did on Good Friday afternoon, about 1879, when they ran a race, arranged by a few sportive individuals, from the “Hurst Arms” Inn to Thornton’s Beer Shop (now known as “The Stout house”), on the Carfax, for a gallon of stout. ”

The race

A candidate from Horsham will hoping to complete 30 years in the council chamber as more than 300 people contest seats in the West Sussex County Council elections next month.

Among the most experienced sitting councillors up for election is Morwen Millson, a Liberal Democrat, who was first elected in 1989 and faces four rivals in Riverside. Winning would take Cllr Millson nearer a 30-year anniversary on the county council in 2019 should she serve the new term of office.

Among the candidates out of the mainstream are James Smith, who is contesting the Holbrook seat under the banner “Something New” and Jim Duggan , contesting Horsham Riverside under the banner “Peace Party - Nonviolence, Justice, Environment.”

Jennifer Casey called in a bee keeper after becoming concerned about a swarm of thousands of honey bees at her home in Billingshurst.

After hearing about Jennifer’s forthcoming wedding this summer to electrician Adam Spice, 28, the bee expert Daisy Day, from Slinfold, decided to name a new hive after them to add to the romance of their August wedding.

Now Jennifer and Adam plan to give guests a honey-themed treat at their reception.

And the bees, all females, have been christened the Spice Girls.

Jennifer, 28, a primary school teacher, told the Post: “It’s a great little extra to our wedding day.

We told Daisy about the wedding date and she said the bees would be making honey by then. Maybe we will do some honey-related favours for the tables or possibly have some with a Pavlova. Because Adam’s surname, and my married name, is Spice Daisy decided to call the bees the Spice Girls. They are all girls, which apparently is unusual.

“We called Daisy up and she was down here in 20 minutes and gathered them up in a special basket.

I guessed there were a couple of hundred but I think there were in fact about 4,000. Because they were so densely packed they were difficult to count.”

Jennifer’s concern was heightened by the knowledge that the bee population is struggling, and she did not want harm to come to them. She said: “They were swarming about our front garden. I wasn’t too sure what they were at first but I understand that bees are the only things that swarm. I think Adam knew what they were, because he said they were not aggressive.”

BilliBiz-The Show 2017 will be staged on May 5 at the Billingshurst Conference and Convention Centre. This is the fifth edition of the successful business-to business “expo” that attracts companies from across the district.

Hot on the heels of Collyer’s netball silver success at the final of the Sussex under-18s Schools Cup, the college welcomed an international player and coaches from national basketball and netball sides to Horsham.

Tania Hoffman, Director of Netball for England Netball Super League’s Surrey Storm, and New Zealand and Surrey Storm shooter Megan Craig were joined by ‘Coach D’, a Development Coach from British Basketball League’s Surrey Scorchers. Megan, Tania and ‘Coach D’ ran highly technical and energetic coaching sessions for the Collyer’s basketball and netball academy squads.

Ian McAlister from the Collyer’s Progression Directorate said: “Both clubs are also heavily linked with Surrey University, and with many of our players starting to make decisions about higher education, this again provided a great opportunity to help them plan for their future.”

It will be case of goodbye, hello when the top fire and rescue officer for West Sussex retires in flaming June.

Sean Ruth will be retiring from his Chief Fire Officer role for West Sussex Fire Rescue Service on June 12.

But he will remain with the same authority as West Sussex County Council’s Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director for Communities and Public Protection, subject to a final approval by Members.

The fire service is under the control of West Sussex County Council, and a process to appoint a new permanent Chief Fire Officer is due to start soon.

Sean joined West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service more than seven years ago. After a year out of uniform, carrying out wider county council responsibilities, he returned to his substantive position in February when Lee Neale retired.

West Sussex County Council Chief Executive Nathan Elvery said: “Sean has played a key role within the county council’s leadership team and I’m delighted he has agreed to continue to work with us as Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director for Communities and Public Protection. This role has increased responsibilities and will be key to delivering Members’ ambitions for supporting our communities.

“The permanent appointment of a new Chief Fire Officer clearly demonstrates a service under new leadership.”

Sean said: “It may be time to hang up my fire boots but I am very pleased to have the opportunity to carry on leading the work of the wider Executive Directorate at the heart of West Sussex County Council.

“In the years ahead, I hope the role of the fire and rescue service continues to broaden and people recognise the important part the Service has to play in keeping our residents safe.

“It has been my privilege to serve as the Chief Fire Officer of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and I want to thank everyone within the Service for their hard work and commitment, which I know will continue under their new Chief.”

DIY refuse charge dropped

Residents are able to dump “do it yourself” refuse free of charge again after a Government announcement to local councils, who had been charging at civic amenity sites.

A statement from Nathan Elvery, Chief Executive at West Sussex

County Council said: “Following the recent statement made by the Rt Hon Andrea Leadsom MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, it is the Government’s intention to review its guidance with regard to the charges that can be made at

local civic amenity sites and the specific reference to the disposal of DIY materials generated by householders.

“In order to avoid any potential confusion for our residents in West Sussex we have decided to suspend all charges for these type of materials with immediate effect until the review by the Government has been concluded.

“Therefore householders visiting any West Sussex amenity site will no longer be charged for the deposit of material which results from the sort of work householders would normally carry out on their homes, what most people would refer to as DIY waste.

“Once the Government’s review has been concluded the County Council will look at the matter again.”

Charges for tyres at household waste recycling sites remain in place.

Big day for work colleagues Sarah Cambridge

Sunday’s London Marathon will be a big day for two workers from the same firm.

Beckie Johnson and colleague Sarah Cambridge will support the NSPCC in the gruelling run.

They will be helping to support services which include the NSPCC’s Speak Out. Stay Safe Schools Service which delivers safeguarding assemblies and workshops to teach children the tools needed to keep them safe from abuse.

Both work for OSCL Project Services IT firm, which has an office at Wisborough Green. Beckie, 23, from Horsham, said: “The NSPCC is a charity that I have always known of and remember raising money for as a nine year old child via a sponsored spelling test at school. I knew that the NSPCC had a phone number for children to call and that abuse is bad, however, although I had the drive to raise money and

help I did not have a deep grasp of the NSPCC’s support.

Sarah, 33, said: “The fact that so many helpless children continue to struggle day by day in the care of the people that are supposed to look after and protect them is distressing.

“I am inspired by every child to raise awareness about the NSPCC and to go some way towards trying to let them know that they are not alone, that there are people out there that do care and show how the NSPCC are trying to ensure they receive the start in life that every person deserves.”

OSCL, which has offices at Wisborough Green, Hove, London, and Cambridge, has chosen the NSPCC for its 2017 charity and aims to raise £25,000 of which anything Beckie and Sarah raise will be a contribution.

Brown Owl Suzy summed up with: “The Brownie Adventure is about trying new things that teach girls aged seven to ten about themselves, their community and the world. This trip certainly helped the girls learn about democracy, parliament and being a citizen. It was an opportunity that I would not have had without volunteering with Girlguiding and more volunteers are always needed.”

Local groups are invited to showcase what they do in a changed format to the annual North Horsham Parish Council parish meeting on Monday.

This time the statutory meeting will be preceded by a Community Evening to which local organisations have been invited to highlight what they do and perhaps recruit new members and volunteers.

The event will take place on April 24 at North Heath Hall, St Marks Lane, Horsham, starting at 7.30 pm.

A cross-section of societies, clubs and charities will be represented as well as other key people and organisations that play an important part in life in our community.

Representatives from Liberty Property Trust will also be present to answer questions about the development North of Horsham.

The evening will conclude with a brief Annual Parish Meeting at 8.45 pm, but parish councillors will be present throughout the evening to meet informally with residents.

North Horsham Parish Council says it would like to extend an open invitation to members of the public to attend this exciting event. Entry is free and light refreshments will be served.

Neither houses were sitting so we were able to stand among the seats – but we weren’t allowed to sit down because we are not MPs or Lords!

Then we went into the iconic Westminster Hall, where the girls were impressed by the stunning atmosphere and amazed to learn of its place at the centre of our history stretching back over 900 years. We were told by our fantastic tour guide that during maintenance of the ceiling they found Tudor tennis balls stuck up in the fantastic hammerbeam vaulting!”

The visit coincided with the funeral cortege from Westminster Cathedral for PC Palmer, Brown Owl saying: “We happened to be there and although it is difficult to witness these events with our Brownies, what we saw really focused our thoughts”.

The Brownie unit then walked to Downing Street where they were met by Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, who welcomed them, asking the

one final summer of golf at Gatton Manor....

Over the past 50 years, since it’s opening in the 1960’s, Gatton has built a reputation as a well-respected club, whose members and staff offer a warm welcome to visitors, societies and golf break guests.

“ The whole team at Gatton Manor are committed to making this final season, one to remember. The course was fantastically maintained last year and we will ensure this continues throughout 2017.

Showing no signs of slowing down the club are actively promoting their unique summer membership, as well as a variety of pay and play options and will be hosting two final open competitions for golfers to enjoy.

Ricki the great survivor says thanks Then and now

A cancer survivor saved by a stem cell transplant is running the Virgin Money London Marathon this weekend to raise money for the charity that saved his life.

Ricki Watson, 27, was diagnosed with two strains of leukaemia in October 2013. The only cure was a stem cell transplant. With the help of blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan a donor was found for Ricki, and the transplant took place in January 2014.

plant may be their best chance of survival. Doctors will give new, healthy stem cells to the patient via their bloodstream, where they begin to grow and create healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Although Ricki has two brothers and two sisters, none of them were a suitable match for him.

Anthony Nolan searched the worldwide donor register and found a woman from Germany who matched his tissue type.

Although Ricki has not spoken to her directly, the pair have exchanged anonymous cards and

letters.

Ricki, who co-owns a scaffolding business, is now determined to raise money for the charity and help others who are going through the same experience.

Ricki said: “When I was in hospital I was the most positive I could be.

“I nearly died from allergic reactions four times, and was put on a ventilator when my lungs gave up, but I always stayed strong.”

Ricki, from Horsham, has made a dramatic recovery, which he credits to eating healthily and exercising since he left hospital.

He said: “Two years ago I couldn’t even walk up the stairs. I had to give up my house and live with my mum in Crawley. I had to stop halfway up climbing the stairs to have a breather.

“I was determined that I wasn’t just going to get better, I was going to be even stronger than I used to be. As soon as I got out of hospital I was back in the gym. Eight months later I climbed Ben Nevis.’

At his lowest point, Ricki weighed just seven stone and had to be tube-fed. He made a promise to himself in hospital that he would run the London Marathon in memory of two friends he made on the ward, Tanyel and Dan, who sadly passed away.

Ricki has already beaten his £5,000 fundraising goal, and is determined to raise as much money as possible for future cancer patients like him.

Wine notes for April

For wine enthusiasts it is good to come across a lesser known grape that produces a great drink.

One of them is the lesser spotted Fiano, usually a native of southern Italy. But one I came across was from the famous McLaren Vale vineyard in South Australia. It is without doubt the best match I have had for one of my favourite dishes, salmon carbonarra, but would be fine with chicken dishes too.

Its citrus and cashew overtones make it distinct from other better known whites such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. You can get a bottle in some supermarkets for about £7 but I was fortunately treated to a stunning Hancock and Hancock 2016 that costs £14.55 (stockists include Ann et Vin and Warren Wines. ) The tonque twisting Gewurtztraminer Villa Maria Private Bin 2016 from New Zealand provided a wonderful match with my Chinese takeway, its own highly unusual tones blending well with the sweet and sour aspects of the food. This wine displays all the classic varietal aromas of rose petal, lychee and spice. The light elegant and peachy Maison Kuentz-Bas Muscat D’Alsace 2014 (wine Society £11.50) is racked in accordance with the moon’s cycles under the biodynamic system used in some part of France.

Narince is a grape used in Turkey , and the delightful white Kayra Narince from Anatolia (Strictly Wine £12.70) is brilliant with seafood or on its own.

Earth Day is April 22 and it is a good time to remember wines where producers pay particular attention to the environment. JeanLuc Colombo Cotes du Rhone Les Abeilles Rouge 2014 (RRP £12.15 Wine Rack, Luvians, John Lewis, Kingsgate Wines) reflects his green philosophy, and the wine is a wonderful match for rich meat dishes, its Grenache grape dominance displaying fruits and spice to spare while being fairly smooth. It is named in honour of the important role that bees play in pollinating their vineyards. It is reminder too that whatever the skills of winemakers, it is nature that is at the heart of our favourite wines.

Students visit Iceland to help their studies An indoor swim in the snow and seeing the Northern Lights were two of the highlights of a trip to Iceland for students.

30 second year geography and geology students and their teachers from Collyer’s in Horsham too in visits to Reykjavik, Thingevellir National Park, waterfalls, geysers, glaciers, volcanoes, black sand beaches and geothermal centres.

The group was even able to enjoy an outdoor swim in the snow at a geothermal lagoon.

Geography teacher Noami Lask Lask said: “Students study tectonic hazards, so the trip enabled them to see the infamous Eyjafjallajokull and learn all about the 2010 eruption. They also had the chance to visit the Thingvellir National Park and walk through the rift between the tectonic plates.

“Perhaps the most exciting part was seeing the Northern Lights on the first night. It was incredible.”

Vice Principal Melanie Russell said: “Massive thanks to Noami, our Head of Geography Kate Walters, and our very own Head of Geology Dr Ian Carr, for organising and accompanying our students on this absolutely incredible educational opportunity. Pupils acted as models to create a new public sculpture being created in Billingshurst to commemorate a school’s 350-year milestone.

Christ’s Hospital, now at Horsham, was in the City of London from 1552-1902.

Sculptor Andrew Brown is using photographs of pupils posing for the maquette, or small scale model, and then again for the final piece, working at his Billingshurst studio.

Andrew, a renowned sculptor with many public commissions in his portfolio, was selected following an open competition organised by the City of London Corporation. The sculpture will be moved to a foundry in London in

the summer and is planned to be installed this September.

Christ’s Hospital was founded in the City 465 years ago and moved to Horsham in 1902. The new bronze sculpture, 2.4m long and 1.5m high, will be positioned close to where Christ’s Hospital was originally founded in Newgate Street. Currently, the only permanent acknowledgement of its occupation of the site for such a long period of time is a small blue plaque.

The sculpture will be very visible to the passer-by positioned on the boundary wall of Christchurch Greyfriars Church Garden. The school says the design will give ‘life’ to the essence of Christ’s Hospital and its vision.

This striking sculpture serves as recognition of Christ’s Hospital’s relationship with the City which remains active today modern day school remains true to its original vision of providing education for children of promise regardless of means.

The back of the sculpture facing the garden will feature a copper plate drawing of the Priory buildings before Christ’s Hospital began to occupy the site in 1552, coupled with an extract from a poem by former pupil, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The school said: “This striking sculpture serves as recognition of Christ’s Hospital’s relationship with the City which remains active today. The project has attracted considerable interest.”

Fat Sam, Dandy Dan and Long and winding road for Chloe Knuckles take stage Chloe West and company

Girls took up the invitation to enjoy themselves on stage when Farlington School’s Prep 5 and 6 years staged Bugsy Malone.

Farlington was commended for it “highly successful prep and senior school drama productions” in its recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report, and the school says this production was of the usual and exceptional standard.

The writer of “Bugsy Malone” said that it was his young son who had come up with idea for the show – and that he had promptly “pinched it”.

No surprise, because David Thomas, who provided the words for this report, said: “This is a musical that shouts out for young children to enjoy themselves on stage. A wonderful array of period costumes – not to mention splurge guns – immediately transformed Farlington Prep School pupils into the gangsters, speakeasy girls, policemen, boxers and “characters” of New York, 1920’s-style.

“Amy Crouch as Fat Sam and Amalia Gazala as Dandy Dan showed excellent stage presence as the rival gang leaders, very ably supported by their henchmen, not least the lugubrious Bonnie Hand as Knuckles. Charlotte Mitchell as Blousey Brown and Amelie Holloway as Tallulah contrasted perfectly as the “love interest” and Amelie invested her song “My Name is Tallulah” with glamour and panache. Esme Allford with her deadpan delivery presented Bugsy as a real and convincing character trying to survive in a tough city.

“The musical numbers were sung with gusto – not least the catchy “Fat Sam’s Grand Slam”

– and the clever choreography enabled this talented young cast to show they could act, sing and dance. Another hit for the terrific production team of Lucy Cooper and Brian Dallimore.”

Young Chloe West is on song for Sunday’s London Marathon.

Chloe warned up for her challengeat Osmund Court in Billingshurst, bringing an afternoon of song to the residents, courtesy of Billingshurst Rock Choir.

Chloe, who has worked as a nurse and carer with older people since she left school at the age of 17, has been raising money for the local charity working with older people, Age UK Horsham District.

And this weekend she will take on her biggest challenge for the charity so far, to complete the 26.2 mile London Marathon.

The charity’s Chief Executive Officer, Sonia Mangan, said: “We can’t thank Chloe enough for giving up her time to train so hard

for this race and raise money for our very vital work in the local community. Without fundraisers like Chloe, we wouldn’t be able to support so many older people who need our help to make the most of later life.”

The charity raises money to support many of its free to use services, including home visiting and befriending for lonely and vulnerable older people, and information and advice about a whole host of issues from benefit claims to housing and health.

All money raised by Chloe will go towards helping the charity continue services like these.

Acclaimed French/British cellist Corinne Morris will be performing in The Hawth Studio on Saturday 13 May. Corinne has performed throughout Europe and beyond. She was chosen by Rostropovich to perform at his festival, in Evian, and subsequently invited to the Verbier Academy in Switzerland. She has made several recordings for the BBC, France Musique, Bayerischer.

Corinne obtained an ARCM with honours (Royal College of Music, London) before continuing at the prestigious Conservatoire in Paris, where she graduated in both cello and chamber-music.

Corinne’s programme will include Bach’s Suite Nos 1 and 3, Hindemith’s Sonata Op 25 No3 and Borenstein ‘Soliloquy’ Op 59. She will also be performing two works from British composers David Wilde and John Tavener.

She has given highly successful London recitals at St Martin in the Fields, Fairfield Halls and Blackheath Halls and is looking forward to playing at The Hawth.

Postscript Summer Shakespeare workshop to begin in Chichester The highly successful ‘Postscript’ drama classes for adults will begin again on Thursday 27 April for nine weeks, ending on 29 June (no class at half term). Newcomers are welcome.

It has been announced that the highly successful ‘Postscript’ drama classes for adults will begin again next week, to run for a consecutive (barr half term) 9 week period. The practical classes, which began at the Chichester Festival Theatre seven years ago, moved to the Jubilee Hall, in 2016. The sessions (each two hours long) cover a wide variety of drama activities: voice and movement, characterisation, collaboration, improvisation, devising and work on scripts.

Previous classes have covered: Stanislavski, choral speaking, poetry, Forum Theatre, mask, and have shared our work with family and friends.

This summer the

group will explore King Lear and use the play to launch a range of drama activities – all based on ideas and themes within the play.

Kim Hope, workshop tutor, explained that newcomers are welcome: “No experience is needed - just an open mind, and a willingness to join in.

So whether you love or loathe Shakespeare, come along and join this friendly and welcoming group.”

Canine expert’s Indian street dog study hopes to help domestic pups A canine health expert from Sussex is hoping to shed new light on dog behaviour relating to chronic muscle pain when she travels to India next month to undertake a unique study.

ing workshops for pet owners to give them a better understanding of their pup’s anatomy.

The team will also be conducting a study of street dogs, measuring their postures and taking note of their behaviour in a ‘natural’ environment. They will then be comparing their results with that of dogs living in a domestic environment.

Julia, who has a background in farming and veterinary nursing, said: “My mission, through Galen Myotherapy, is to help as many dogs as possible tormented by underlying pain, arthritis and repetitive strain injuries (RSI) – all of which can be suffered in silence.

“I treat hundreds of dogs every year with such conditions, all of whom live in a domestic environment. I hope that by studying street dogs in a natural pack environment the team and I can further our understanding of canine posture and behaviour.

“If these street dogs tend to suffer less from conditions such as arthritis and RSI, for example, we can look into these traits further to see how they might benefit our beloved pets at home.”

Julia established the Galen

Therapy Centre, based in Bolney, in 2002 and since then has built up a network of myotherapists who work across the UK and abroad. She has also become an in-demand speaker at canine events across the globe.

The India trip will be the biggest project she and the team have ever undertaken and will bring Galen Myotherapy to new audience. Julia and her colleagues are providing all training and workshops in India for free and have been fundraising to help cover their travel costs and expenses.

The team are on course to hit their £2,700 target but are still appealing for donations.

“We are all very much looking forward to travelling to India, which will be a first for many of us, and meeting many new dogs and their owners,” Julia added.

“Our supporters have been wonderful in helping us with our fundraising but any other contributions will be gratefully received.”

County and national success for Horsham Hawks Basketball Five members of the Horsham Hawks have been selected for county basketball squads.

Charla Flint and Ruby LeaClayton of Shelley School will represent the girls U11 age category while Anaya Wakefield of Tanbridge House and Charlotte Willox of the Weald were selected for the girls U15 squad. Joining

them will be Josh Lea-Clayton of Tanbridge House who made the boys U15 squad. The County teams will compete in the South East Regional Tournament to be held at Surrey Sports Park in May. Josh Lea-Clayton also featured in the U14 Worthing Thunder team that defeated the Sheffield Sharks 86-64 in their National Cup quarter final. The victory

sets up a semi-final clash against the Northern Premier division winners, City of Birmingham.

The semi-finals and final will be held in Manchester at Belle Vue - the new National Basketball Development Centre - to determine who will be crowned National Champions. The second semi-final will feature Lewisham Thunder and Manchester Magic.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Local cricket beckons, Horsham Chairman Richard Marshall saying: “We won the Sussex Cup last season, and led the Premier League until fortunes faded.

This year we’ve new Captain Michael Thornely with county experience, and new Groundsman Jon Buddington from Tunbridge Wells - and we’ve signed Ryan Maskell, wicket keeper batsman from Bognor, and Sussex 2s’ Nick Oxley.

So, we’re optimistic!” Oxley scored 150 in a county U17 match last summer. This season, however, there are two significant changes, introducing unquantifiable: league games at either end of the season will be 50 over matches, and, there are tighter overseas player regulations. Four in a row has never been done, and would be even better!” Captain Matt Davies, just back from a prolific winter cricketing in Australia, said: “50/50 cricket is a leveller, but we back ourselves because recently we’ve got further in the National KO Cup than anyone else in Sussex. We’ve underachieved in cups, though, and we’d like to put

that right.” Stalwart all- rounder George Fleming added: “Our strength is our settled side, most of us have grown up playing together – and we like to win!” Groundsman Drew Smallwood says: “The winter has been kind this time, much drier, and the square and ground are in good nick.” With both local sides considering overseas player possibilities, this Sunday Horsham welcomes Ashstead in the National KO Cup, while Roffey entertain Bromley. The following Saturday (April 29) in the Sussex Cup Horsham travel to Brighton & Hove and Roffey to Premier League newcomers Ansty. The league programme begins on Saturday May 6, Horsham having a demanding visit to Preston Nomads, while Roffey host Brighton & Hove. Shock YM victory knocks Shoreham off the top SCFL Premier Division Shoreham 1 – 2 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor If any match summed up Horsham YMCA’s inconsistent season this was it as against the form book they travelled to the south coast and took all three points from high flying Shoreham.

The defeat was a major bow to Shoreham as it resulted in them surrendering top spot to Haywards Heath Town with 3 games to play.

Although Shoreham had the better of the first half YM gave as good as they got and the game flowed from end to end with ‘keepers Mark Fox and Josh Heyburn equally as busy. However with Shoreham having the greater possession it took

some fine defending from Harry Shipton, Tom Gilbert and Guy Harding to keep the title chasing Musclemen at bay and to take both sides in at the break goalless.

The hosts would have felt confident of all 3 points when within 2 minutes of the restart Alex Laing’s cross shot went in off the foot of the post. Instead of the home side pushing on it was YM who responded the better creating a number of chances with the lively Sam Schaaf coming very close on a couple of occasions. It was Schaaf who pulled YM back into the match when on the hour mark he burst into the box before placing a well struck shot past Heyburn for the equaliser. As Shoreham

went in from both sides resulting in a flurry of yellow cards from referee Darren Eaton that saw Joseph Dryer collecting 2 of them to reduce his side to 10 men.

Then the title chasers were dealt a massive blow 3 minutes into stoppage time when after picking up a stray clearance Schaaf run from the halfway line before planting the ball into the Shoreham net for an unlikely winner. There was still time for the home sides frustrations to boil over once again as they saw out the final minute of added time with 9 players following Jamie Craddock’s late dismissal. So a sickening result for Shoreham and a positive one for YM in their roller coaster of a season.

Horsham Artistic Gymnastics squad competed at the South East Regional Grades competition at the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Spectrum and recorded some superb results.

Morgan Millar was the first from Horsham to compete and started things off well for the squad by achieving consistently high scores that saw her finish 2nd overall.

Next up in round 2 were Phoebe Light, Charley Bargman and Isabella Carr all competing at national grade 3 and all three passed the grade with commendation. In the same round, but at national grade 2, Millie Craven also passed with commendation and finished 6 overall which earned her a place as the non-travelling reserve for the South East team at the National Finals.

In the third round Horsham’s

Elisha Venturini, Brooke Stocker and Tabitha Lees all passed the compulsory grade 4 with ease with Elisha placed 11th, Brooke 6th and Tabitha 6th, with Tabatha named as the travelling reserve for the South East team at the National Finals.

In the final round of the competition Scarlett Tidy competed at national grade 1 and finished 2nd overall earning her a place in the south east team member at the National Finals. Finally, competing at National grade 4, Lola McNaughton was crowned the overall champion and will also go on to compete at the National Finals as a member of the south east team.

Over the two weekends of grades competitions out of the 18 Horsham gymnasts that competed the squad achieved one gold medal, three silver medals, one bronze medal, and a further eight gymnasts recording top ten finishes.

With many runners either resting up from their exertions at the previous weeks Brighton Marathon, or taking it easy before next week’s London Marathon, Val Purnell put in a tremendous performance at the British Masters 10K Championship at the Gravesend Cyclopark.

She finished an amazing 2nd overall and first in the Southern Veterans category taking a silver and gold medal respectively in a time of 48.55.

Closer to home, Neil Boniface broke the Global parkrun best time for a Veteran 40 at Horsham parkrun by clocking 15.21 on the same day as Horsham parkrun broke its own attendance record with a massive field of 501 runners.

Photos by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 0 – 1 Sittingbourne Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Given the victory over table topping Tooting & Mitcham and the fine win in Guernsey on their last outing hopes were of another Horsham victory in this mid-table clash; however a single second half goal from Sittingbourne condemned the Hornets to a somewhat surprise defeat.

The result mattered not of course although manager Dom Di Paola will have no doubt noted this failure – and that of previous ones this season - to take all 3 points when there for the taking as he looks ahead to next season Horsham started brightly with Darren Boswell and Alfie Rogers having early efforts before at the other end defender Jono Richardson headed straight into Josh Pellings arms. The opportunity of the half then fell to Boswell who after collecting a pass from Tony

Nwachukwu smashed a curling shot against the bar with visiting ‘keeper Simon Overland well beaten. If that had gone in then the game could have gone the way of Horsham but it was Sittingbourne who responded the better and Jake Embery would have given his side the lead if not for a superb goal line clearance from Ashely Jones. Horsham then suffered a blow when after having a decent cross shot the influential Nwachukwu had to leave the field through injury and was replaced by George Branford.

Just before the break Horsham missed another good chance and once again showed Di Paola what is needed next season when, with the goal gaping before him, Steve Metcalf blasted over from close range.

The best player of the first half, Boswell, continued to be a threat in the second 45 hitting a shot inches wide of the goal before having a fierce drive go directly at Overland. Sittingbourne always looked a threat and gave as good as they got and Pelling had to be at his very best to save Embery’s

shot that was heading into the top corner. Pelling was beaten not long after however when after some neat play from Embery and Kane Phillip the ball was played to the far post where Gil Carvalho poked the ball into the net. After that it became a total stalemate as both teams seemed to accept that it was always going to be a one goal match and that on this occasion it was the Kent side’s one goal that took the points and earned them the double of Horsham.

SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 4 Pagham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Steve Painter’s Broadbridge Heath have struggled with player availability in recent weeks and for the visit of Pagham there were only three players who played in the reverse fixture back in September.

However, the biggest blow for Painter was that he was without a recognised goalkeeper with first choice Michael Chester away, reserve keeper Paul Williams unavailable and U18 keeper Tom Gandy injured; so reserve team midfielder and novice goalkeeper Josh Maher stood in.

The visitors took the lead with their first attack in the 3rd minute as George Cody got behind debutant fullback Dan Longo and whipped in a ball that was bundled into the net by Callum Overton. After Jamal Sultan hit a right foot shot narrowly over the bar, on 10 minutes it was 2-0 when Matt Ryan beat the offside trap and placed a shot wide of Maher into the bottom right hand corner. The game was over as a contest when three minutes later Josh Maher came off his line

quickly in an attempt to win the ball but instead crashed straight into a Pagham player to concede a penalty which Ryan converted with ease and that’s how it remained until half-time.

Heath made a double-substitution for the start of the second period bringing on Jamie Liddell and Callum Nash and the change had an immediate impact with Nash receiving the ball in midfield and played it to Liddell who crossed for Jahobi Maher to score.

Any chance of a comeback ended in the 60th minute when the ball came off ‘keeper Maher straight into the path of Overton who completed his hat-trick.

Painter wasn’t too downhearted after the game, saying, “If we had Michael in goal today the game would have been completely different. All you can do is look at the positives; we had three 17 year olds in our starting line-up Dan Longo, Kyle Sim and Curtis Grffin and I thought they all did well and this experience is just what they need to improve their game.

It was also good to have Liddell back in the dressing room, he’s not match fit but we’ll probably need him in our remaining games because Jake Holmes is out for the rest of the season along with Tim M

Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor As the local football season comes to an end Horsham, Horsham YMCA and Broadbridge Heath are not involved at the top or the bottom of their respective divisions.

However, mid-table security gives all three a platform to build on next season although YM will no doubt feel the most disappointment in failing to put in a promotion challenge.

Tomorrow, Saturday 22, Horsham play their final league game of the season when they host seventh placed Hythe Town. The match has little importance to either side other than a win for Horsham could result in them climbing a few plac-

es in the table while a defeat for Hythe Town could drop them a few.

The match has more significance in that it will be Horsham’s final home game at Gorings Mead before they spend next season at Culver Road, Lancing, and then hopefully onto the new ground at Hop Oast for the 2018/19 season. Horsham have adapted fairly well to life back in the Ryman League and although manager Dom Di Paola would have liked better maintaining the teams Ryman status was always number one priority, so it’s a job well done.

YM visit AFC Uckfield Town tomorrow before wrapping up the season at home to title chasing Haywards Heath Town on Saturday 29. Peter Buckland’s side has suffered inconsistency all season and

have never really got going after started out as one of the teams likely to be in the mix for promotion come this stage of the season.

The team has been hit by injuries to key players throughout the campaign and that has contributed immensely to YM’s roller coaster season. The ever competitive and determined Buckland will be disappointed however with what will be a middle of the division finish. Next season - with a bit of luck with injuries - YM should pose a bigger threat to the higher places of the Premier.

Like Buckland, Broadbridge Heath’s manager Steve Painter has also suffered more than his fair share of injuries while also losing a few players during the season to other clubs. Hassocks visit the Leisure Centre tomorrow and then Heath finish up away at Eastbourne Town on April 29. Although a top six place is probably beyond them Heath are likely to finish eighth or ninth which, given the injuries and the club being at this level for only a few seasons, can be classed as a decent season. With a new ground also on the horizon the club will be hoping to improve again next term.

But for now it’s nearly time to put the array of multi-coloured boots away for the summer; well at least until July when the customary series of pre-season friendlies kick things off once again.

Ryman League Division One South Godalming Town 1 – 2 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor This was a match that Horsham should have won at ease after they wasted numerous chances and were the victims of some strange decisions from the match officials.

In the end it was a last minute George Branford winner that gave Horsham the points and all but destroyed Godalming’s hopes of escaping relegation.

This was Horsham’s last away match of the season and was played on a surface that more resembled a farmer’s field than a football pitch.

As what was a thoroughly forgettable half entered its final stages two bits of action injected a bit of life into the match. James Thurgar chased a through ball into the box and was unceremoniously brought down by defender Chris Wales giving referee Blake no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Scott Kirk-

wood stepped up to take the kick and somehow managed to fire the penalty high over the bar. Horsham despite the wild finishing were the better side and on the stroke of half time they took the lead when Darren Boswell superbly controlled a long ball before hitting a half volley past ‘keeper Oneal Garnes. There was still time for another Horsham glaring miss as Boswell spurned the chance to hit his and his team’s second goal when he shot well wide.

After an early Chris Musgrove header just missed Pelling’s goal the game again slipped into a contest of little quality and urgency.

Godalming did have something to play for, their Ryman survival, and after an hour they regained parity with a well struck goal. A Horsham headed clearance dropped out to defender Carl Garstang who hit a superb volley past Pelling into the bottom corner. Then as if to give the crowd some entertainment referee Blake stepped into the spotlight with the first of his strange decisions when he waved away

Horsham’s loud appeals following Town’s Steve Brown’s blatant push on Rogers in the penalty area. Then as both sides decided to have a go for the win Horsham were again denied by referee Blake. With two Godalming players on the goal line Metcalf crossed into the box from where Charlie Farmer slotted the ball past ‘keeper Garnes and the two players on the line into the net.

Somehow the referee and his assistant deemed Farmer offside and again Horsham were denied by poor refereeing.

With the match about to go into added time justice was done when Horsham grabbed the winner. After being awarded a free kick over 30 yards out George Branford stood over the ball and given the match was in its final seconds the Horsham man decided to try his luck and to the delight of the visiting fans his effort beat the diving Garnes to seal the win.

Horsham finish their very satisfactory season tomorrow (Saturday 22) when they host Hythe Town at Gorings Mead.

Pre-match YMCA Manager Peter Buckland said: “It should be a tight game – it usually is when we meet Crawley Down Gatwick, we drew 2-2 over there just after Christmas” and it was tight, but only in the first half.

The second half was all YM as they romped home with their second win in four days. Crawley, though, produced most of the early chances, duly converting in the 22nd minute when Sam Cane fired home, appeals for off side going unheeded. Forays at both ends came to nothing until just before the interval a YM shot was parried out to Phil Johnson who made no mistake with his 21st goal of the season.

YM, still without several long term injury hit regulars, compensated with energy and commitment, which paid off shortly after the break when Sam Schaaf calmly slotted into an empty goal for the lead. It soon got even

better when Johnson’s shot was blocked on the line but came back out to Schaaf to put YM 3-1 in front. YM kept running and creating opportunities - a forceful Dan Evans header was pushed out before Schaaf scythed through, crossing for Nick Sullivan to impressively seal YM’s well deserved 4-1 victory.

Peter Buckley told the District Post: “Wow, I wish it was August!

That certainly didn’t look like a mid-table clash with nothing to play for. Crawley pushed us hard for the first 25 minutes, but we fought our way back in and then the senior players really did their stuff in the second half.”

On Saturday (tomorrow) YM travel to AFC Uckfield Town, having beaten them 3-0 at home in January. Uckfield are hovering just above the relegation zone, but YM’s last game of their long, mercurial season – encompassing 38 league games and five cup competitions – finishes with a tough challenge on the following Saturday (April 29), when they host top of the table Haywards Heath Town, to whom they lost 4-1 away in November.

Formula 1 Dave Smith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer’s Renault Sport Formula One Team scored its first points of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix with Palmer’s teammate Nico Hülkenberg breaking into the point scoring first ten with a ninth place finish.

However both drivers bemoaned the speed obtainable from the Renault and that it contributed greatly to both drivers finishing lower that their grid position with Palmer starting from 10th on the grid and finishing 13th while Hülkenberg’s ninth place came from starting 7th on the grid.

Both drivers used a two stop

strategy during the 57 lap race with palmer coming for tyre changes on lap 13 while the safety car was out and then again on lap 37.

Palmer commented after the race, saying, “It was a tough race; I had a good fight with Alonso and Kvyat after the safety car bunched everyone up, but the couple of touches with Kvyat didn’t help things. I didn’t really have the pace to get further after that and the degradation seemed to be more for us than the cars around. It made for a difficult evening, unfortunately, where we struggled with a lack of pace.”

His teammate Hülkenberg adding, “It’s good to have the first points of the season on the board and I think I had a good race given the pace of the car. I really wrestled with it a lot and two points were the best we could do on the strategy we ran.

The drivers now head to the Sochi Autodrom for the Russian Grand Prix to be held over the weekend of April 28-30.

Scrappy derby ends in narrow Loxwood win SCFL Premier Division Loxwood 2 – 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Going into the match just one place and one point separated these two local rivals in 7th and 8th places in the Premier Division.

When the final whistle blew the positions remained the same but the point gap was up to 4 in Loxwood’s advantage.

This was a typical local derby all huff and puff and little quality that resulted in a scrappy game shaded by the home side with a second half winner. Heath went behind in the 6th minute when Napper’s header put former Bear striker Andrade

in on goal to slot past Chester. The lead only lasted for 10 minutes as Mayer’s cross was met by the head of Sultan who left ‘keeper Carruthers no chance. Both teams had efforts but none of any quality and the score remained 1-1 at the break.

The second half was much more of the same but just after Sultan had forced a save out of Carruthers and Mayer had rattled the bar with Carruthers beaten the home side grabbed the winner. A good break by Wood was complete by a decent ball into the box that Andrade dummied allowing Napper to side foot into the net. A couple of half chances were all the last 30 minutes could produce and a fairly unforgettable local derby ended with a Loxwood victory.
