Man jailed for eight-year abuse of vulnerable girl phil dennett News Editor

A Horsham man has been given a 24-year sentence for the systematic abuse of a vulnerable young girl. The judge said it was the worst case of its kind he had ever heard. It involved seduction, rape and physical violence on the girl from the age of 13 until she was 21. Richard Koch, 41, a handyman, of Canberra Place, Horsham, was sentenced when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday of last week. He had previously been found guilty of 23 offences, including rape, sexual assault, assault, and incitement to engage in sexual activity. Koch pleaded guilty to three offences of possession of indecent images of children, none of which were of the victim of the abuse, and was found not guilty of one sexual assault on her. He was given a total of 24 years, the first 19 of which will be served in custody, and he will not be able even to apply for parole until he has served 16 years. Even when he is eventually released, the further five years will be spent on licence.

Koch will also be a registered sex offender for life and was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to last indefinitely, severely restricting any access to young girls. The victim was subjected to an eight-year series of horrific sexual offences and physical abuse, from the age of 13. This included hitting her with paddles, tying her up and half-strangling her, at addresses

This is the worst case of single sex abuse I have ever had to sit through in Horsham. In sentencing Koch, Judge Paul Tain said: “This is the worst case of single sex abuse I have ever had to sit through”. Detective Constable Dan Richardson of West Sussex Investigations said: “Koch met this girl when she was just 13, seduced her and dominated her life for eight years. He regularly subjected her to sexual assault including rape, sustained physical violence and other personal humiliations.

“So dominated did she become that only in 2012 when she was 21 did she feel able to break off contact and start to lead her own life. Two years later we became aware of her experiences through a third-party in whom she had confided, and with the agreement of both parties we were able to carefully develop a full picture of what had happened to her. “This has now culminated in Koch being given a very long term of imprisonment and other measures to help prevent him re-offending. The victim is still receiving support and counselling. “This shows that we will always investigate every case wherever possible, no matter how long ago they may have occurred, to seek justice and support for the victims. Nobody should have to suffer abuse - if you find yourself in such a situation, call us on 101 and arrange to talk in confidence to experienced investigators.” Sources of further advice are also available at https://sussex. police.uk/advice/protect-yourself-and-others/advice-for-children-and-young-people/. The victim has made it clear through police that she does not wish to comment or speak to media about the case.

Injury and missing key players did not stop young netballers winning medals in a county competition. Collyer’s netball team celebrated winning silver medals at the final of the Sussex under-18 Schools Cup. Having defeated Burgess Hill School for Girls, Brighton College and Hurst College second team in earlier rounds, Collyer’s lost the final to Hurstpierpoint by 23-53. After a tight first half, a Collyer’s team hampered by injury was eventually defeated by an excellent Hurst side. Collyer’s captain Mae Holmes said: “I want to say a massive thank you to all of our travelling support for coming to watch and getting behind us for our final. I speak on behalf of all the whole team when I say the encouragement made a huge difference and we really appreciated it. “I feel our performance wasn’t reflected in the final score, but considering we were missing a couple of key players, we did so well to come out and compete in the way we did. I’m so proud of the girls. And what a beautiful day it was to play the final!” Head Coach Michelle Peckham

Vigilante sparks child grooming investigation in Horsham A vigilante led police in Horsham to the source of alleged child sex grooming. The self-styled paedophile hunter, whose name has not been made public, tipped off Sussex Police about the suspicious activities of a man involving a young girl . As a result police have questioned a man about the allegation and investigations continue. Sussex Police told the Post: “A 52-year-old man was arrested at an address in Horsham on Saturday evening, April 22, on suspicion of attempting to incite a girl under the age of 16 to engage in sexual activity following grooming. He has been interviewed and released under investigation . Information came from a selfstyled ‘paedophile vigilante’ hunter who we are not naming at this time.”

his own personality on the world. Tragically Simon died at only 22 from a heart problem. By then he had found a love for playing rugby and on May 21 at Barns

Green Sports and Social Club players will join other supporters in a charity tournament to honour him. His step-mother Karen Viney said: “Simon unfortunately passed away at the young age of 22 from a degenerative heart condition. He was a young man who suffered from learning difficulties but he didn’t let this hold him back in any way or anything he did. It wasn’t until the age of 20 that he discovered his love and passion for rugby. This in turn had delighted his father who was a regular player for Barns Green Rugby Club and for the last 2 years of Simon’s life they enjoyed playing on the same pitch on numerous occasions and their love of rugby together.” This will be eighth annual rugby tag tournament staged by the rugby club. The previous tournaments have raised a total of about £45,000 for various charities in the Horsham area. These include The Wooden Spoon, which helps physically and mentally disabled children with sports facilities, St Barnabas Hospice, The Springboard Project for children with learning, mental and physical disabilities and Clic Sargent for cancer treatment for young children suffering with the disease and St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley. This year’s charities are The Wooden Spoon, Canine Partners who partner specially trained assistance dogs with people who have physical disabilities and Barns Green Rugby Club to help with their fund raising to help fund their own pitch and facilities.

Life-risking rail trespass soars

Cases of people risking lives on rail lines have soared by nearly 20 per cent in the Horsham and surrounding area. In the past five years up to 2016 the numbers jumped from 128 to 153 incidents in the British Transport Police local area of Brighton, with most being younger people. It is the third highest of the BTP regions. The total number of cases across the South East is up 17 per cent to 1118 say BTP and Network Rail figures. The data, which looks at trends over the last five years, shows trespass incidents are at all-time high in the region, while nationally one person trespasses and dices with death every hour. Research also shows young people are more likely to take a risk on the tracks, with seasonal peaks in incidents coinciding with the spring and summer school

holidays. In response to the seasonal surge in incidents and to tackle the problem of youth trespass, Network Rail has launched a schools engagement programme, which aims to teach children in trespass hotspots about railway safety. The ‘Tackling Track Safety’ programme will be rolledout to more than 100 schools across Britain, using sport to educate children about the dangers across the network. Nicola Dooris, Community Safety Manager, from Network Rail said: “Every April we see a huge rise in the number of people taking a risk on the rail network and it’s worrying that these numbers seem to be going up. The dangers may not always be obvious but the electricity on the railway is always on and trains can travel up to 125 miles per hour, so even if they see you, they can’t stop in time.”

support for research to help children like Tom who are affected by cerebral palsy. Tom and his twin sister Iris were born two months early after their s developed the ThingMaria ingmum limb serious pregnancy complication pre-eclampsia. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy shortly before his first

birthday. Doctors say that Tom’s cerebral palsy was caused by a type of brain injury called periventricular leukomalacia. This most often occurs when parts of the brain are starved of blood and oxygen. The exact cause of this injury is not known. Maria, who lives in West Sussex, said Tom was a happy boy despite his challenges but said: “Both sides of his brain are affected, governing control of all four limbs and his torso – a severe physical disability.” Action Medical Research recently awarded a grant of more than £150,000 to a team based at the One Small Step Gait Laboratory which is part of Evelina London Children’s Hospital. They aim to develop a portable 3D ultrasound system for scanning the hip joints of children with cerebral palsy. This could eventually replace the use of repeated X-rays for monitoring these children, providing a safer and more accurate way of assessing their hip development. Since ultrasound scans could give more detailed pictures, it may also make it easier to predict early on which children are at greatest risk of full hip dislocation, meaning they can be treated sooner.

Rachel asks for more patience Burglary haul recovered Rachel Moxen

Teenager Rachel Moxen hopes more people will learn to understand the challenges of autism. The19-year-old from Southwater lives with autism and says she wants to encourage people to show more patience with others like her. Rachel contacted the District Post as part of the National Autistic Society’s Too Much Information campaign, which she wants

to promote. She said: “As more than 1 in 100 people are autistic, many autistic people live in Horsham. But they’re not getting the understanding they need. Only 16% of autistic people feel the public understands them. In particular, 77% say that people don’t understand that autistic people can need more time to process questions or instructions. This can

make simple things like going to the shops or using public transport extra daunting. “My connection to autism is that I have an older brother who is 27 years old he was diagnosed at about three or four years of age. I myself was diagnosed in 2009 when I was 12, and now I am nearly 20 years old. “I was diagnosed right in the middle of year eight and nine of secondary school which is a hard time to be diagnosed. My parents knew I had it when I was eight years old, but the teacher did not believe them, which held the diagnosis back a few years. “ Recent research from The National Autistic Society found that 80% of the general public would be happy to change their behaviour to give autistic people more time to process information, if only they knew they needed it. Rachel said: “Giving people more time, using clear language and being more patient can make the world of difference to the lives of many autistic people. So I’m asking people in Horsham to join me as part of The National Autistic Society’s Too Much Information campaign to make these small changes to make our community more autism-friendly. “ Anyone who wants to learn more can find out more top tips for autism-friendly behaviour at www.autism.org.uk/tmi.

Recovered items

People in the Steyning area who lost jewellery and antiques could get them back after suspected burglars were arrested. Sussex Police officers have recovered items they believed to have been stolen during a number of burglaries across Sussex, including Steyning and surrounding areas. The haul, which includes various items of jewellery and antiques, was discovered by police when they stopped three men in March. Investigating Officer Ellie Mannan said: “Properties broken into extend from Lancing in West Sussex, through Steyning, Shoreham, Hove and Rottingdean, to Crowborough in East Sussex. We are also looking into a number of burglaries in Surrey to see if they are also linked. The thefts all took

place between the beginning of January and middle of March. As well as personal items, a number of victims also reported that money was taken during the break-ins and has left them feeling unsettled.” Anyone who recognises any of the items, in particular the past time jewellery boxes and money bag with Australian coins in and ‘Australia’ written on it, should contact Sussex Police online via https://sussex.police.uk/contactus/response-to-appeal/ or call 101 quoting serial 1141 of 16/02. Police said a 35-year-old man from Brighton, a 31-year-old man from Southwick and a 31-year-old man from Shoreham have all been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and have been released under investigation.

ing 100, simply have a healthy lifestyle, keep active, also get outside and do some gardening.” Cecilia was born in Waterford, Ireland and moved near Slough with her family when she was a teenager. She now has one son, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Although she spent most of her days as a housewife, during World War Two Cecilia worked in an ammunition factory. Son Donald couldn’t thank Croft Meadow staff enough for their help in preparing and setting up Cecilia’s centenary celebrations. He said, “The staff at Croft Meadow really helped to make this celebration special for Cecilia. The staff prepared a separate room for the party and laid on food and bubbly. We gathered family members at Croft Meadow to celebrate with Cecilia, it was a fantastic afternoon!” Shaw healthcare provides a spectrum of services from comprehensive care packages through to low level support in the community for older people and adults with physical, sensory or mental health support needs.

I wouldn’t say there was a secret to reaching 100, simply have a healthy lifestyle, keep active, also get outside and do some gardening ing a specialist service including rehabilitation, physical disability and challenging behaviour on a daily basis. Munitions workers played a vital behind the scenes role in both World War 2 and World War 1. They were often in danger because the Germans would target buildings they believed to be munitions factory to hamper the Allied war effort. In the early days women and girls were alo at risk from the chemicals used in the production.

Youngsters from Horsham keen on dance got a double treat at a session. The students of Fi Steps, which has branches Horsham and Crawley were visited by Jeffrey Felicisimo, a member of the dance company Flawless, and Isaac Baptiste also known as Turbo, a professional dance entertainer. They ran a six hour workshop last as part of their M.A.D (Music And Dance) Tour. Jeffrey is also a head judge for the United Dance Organisation, the cofounder of the London based dance crew Animaineaux and has a peared on stage with Rita Ora, Little Mix, JLS and Chery Cole and in the film Street Dance Isaac was a Got To Dance finalist and has worked with Whitney Houston, Madonna and had his own TV show called Turbo Boost. Both Jeffrey and Isaac are currently working with Aston Merrygold , formerly a member of the

band JLS, and taught the students some of the dances that the duo will be performing during Aston Merrygold’s tour. The students will perform these routines in their annual school show Fierce at The Hawth, Crawley in September. The students were taught four routines which contained fast footwork and new complicated movements but quickly rose to the challenge. A question and answer session was held at the end, where more advice about performance wa given, and the day finished with a photography session. A spokeswoman for Fi Steps said: “The happy but tired students agreed that this was one of the best workshops they had attended. They learned a great deal, the workshop was very beneficial, challenging and rewarding but above all it was a lot of fun.”

Exhibition on school history opens Saturday Millais so close in national final Caption; Rosemarie Cockayne Christ’s Hospital Boy seated in the Theatre, oil pastel, c. 1970’s

An exhibition opening at Christ’s Hospital school tomorrow reflects upon its colourful history. The 20th Century saw dramatic change for Christ’s Hospital as it moved from its cramped London site of some 350 years to its current rural campus at Horsham. This

exhibition, opening on April 29, explores the art, artefacts and stories behind this historic school, reflecting the huge social, economic and cultural changes that went on in this period. The school says that while such a display cannot be considered a de-

finitive guide to Christ’s Hospital in the 20th Century, it serves to highlight a modern take on the collections it holds. While acknowledging the impact on Christ’s Hospital of two World Wars in previous exhibitions, the focus is more on the remarkable historic collections that illustrate the School’s key developments and on-going achievements of its former pupils, Old Blues. What was valued by the staff and pupils at Christ’s Hospital in the 1920’s? How were the School’s main events documented in the 1960’s? Why do we collect a loud hailer and which famous people are associated with Christ’s Hospital in this century? The exhibition celebrates and commemorates the scope and diversity of a unique, and at times quirky, collection that boasts some 40,000 objects. Christ’s Hospital in the 20th Century invites us to consider art works by two of the most significant Modern British artists of that era. Keith Vaughan 1912–77 was a pupil there from 1921-29 and Frank Brangwyn, 1867-1956, was commissioned to paint the Chapel murals 1912-23) beside the work of lesser known artists Donald Towner , 1903-85 and an art teacher at the school during World War Two and Nell Todd ,1909-76, Head of Art at the school from 1950-69). Viewing is by appointment only. Please contact Christ’s Hospital Museum for an appointment to view and more information through e mail chmuseum@ christs-hospital.org.uk or telephone 01403 247444

Pupils from Millais School in Horsham narrowly missed out on a trip to Kenya in a national contest. They joined eight other schools in Slough for the final of African Adventures’ School Geography Challenge to compete for the prize of a trip to Kenya after winning a previous round, as previously reported in the Post. Nearly 200 schools registered to participate in the Challenge. In the final students took part in an all-day activity working in their school teams of four to complete a task focused on sustainable development. The task specifically focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which is to ‘ensure inclusive and quality education for all and to promote lifelong learning’. Students were tasked with creating resources to highlight the impor-

tance of primary education to the families of Nakuru in Kenya, the town in which African Adventures works. The judging panel, made up of African Adventures’ staff and Shelley Monk from the examination board OCR, were really impressed with the outstanding resources produced and an excellent day was had by all. Millais took runners-up spot with Stafford Grammar School named as winners. Rachel Northover, Communications Manager, at African Adventures said: “We were blown away by the standard of work produced but even more so by the motivation and commitment shown by all the students involved. It was wonderful to see them really engaging and increasing their knowledge of development issues in Kenya.”

Mocktails and dream catchers break record

Would-be business tycoons helped smash a record for a school. The products they conjured up as part of an enterprise week helped raise a record-breaking £3,443.43 at Billingshurst Primary School’s Spring fair. In an initiative worthy of BBC’s Dragon’s Den, the pupils enjoyed a week of activities designed to showcase and encourage upand-coming entrepreneurs. Each class received a £10 ‘start up fund’ to support the best creative ideas to maximise their return on investment. The week culminated in the fair, one of the school’s major fundraising events, which is now run by the children. Pupils worked together to select and create goods to be sold on stalls at

the fair, with prizes for the most money raised, best sales people and the most attractive stall. This year’s fair included the widest range of stalls on offer, from a Mocktail bar and pizza stand, to crafts such as forest animals, decorative plant pots and dream catchers. Displaying some promising sales skills were Year six pupils from Japan Class who took the most amount of money on their Mocktails stall. The annual sponsors, Fowlers Estate Agents in Billingshurst High Street, ran a spring poster competition, inviting students to design the artwork to promote the event. As head judge Keith Hutchinson from Fowlers Estate Agents chose a winning entry from each year group. The overall

winners were Maya Pascoe from Reception, George Hunt from Key Stage 1 and Baylie Pody from Key Stage 2. Over 100 entries were received and were put out to decorate the gates of the school. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School, said: “This year we handed the responsibility of running the event to the children and their response has been remarkable. Pupils displayed their practical, creative and mathematical skills at each stage of the process, from concept design to sales, and as a result feel an enormous sense of achievement from the money raised.” Scenes from the fair are pictured on this page.

Road. There are three sites there, named Pond, Stump, and Spider, and all are surrounded by woodland. Hundreds of guides have enjoyed the facilities over the years, which include toilets and showers and huts that can be locked.

(of cycling schemes) across the country, so you need to push your councillors – some of them have been in place for generations and haven’t achieved much!” Ruth Fletcher summed up saying: “Developers have money and will give it to get planning permission, but if we don’t ask then we won’t get it.” She also posed the question: “Should West Sussex have a Cycling Commissioner? Andrew Gilligan did a great job in that role for London.” The WSCC Cycle Strategy, pushed for by HCF, is up for review later in 2017 and there was general agreement at the meeting that safe cycling requirements need to be prioritised to prevent Horsham being surrounded by a ring of motoring steel. Rosemary French closed the meeting commenting that: “West Sussex is far behind Surrey with safe cycling facilities.”

“Money should to be wisely spent – not on inappropriate ideas. And all of the budget needs to be used! But councils say that they can’t afford to do feasibility studies.” The charity Cycling UK has produced a “Space for Cycling” guide for decision makers, clearly setting out examples of good practice across the UK and describing the benefits, but the statistics are damning – in the Netherlands 26% of journeys are completed by bicycle, but in Britain that is less than 2%. Frances Haigh, Liberal Democrat candidate emphasised the discrepancy, saying: “The Dutch spend £28 per person on cycling, we spend £4. We need to get people moving to prevent obesity and reduce diabetes.” Andrew Baldwin, Conservative, said: “We definitely need to take cycling more seriously, we have to be smarter in our approach.” While, James Smith of the Something New Party told the audience, which included other prospective candidates: “With the political will there could be a proper cycling plan, but there needs to be a joined up strategy and leadership in the council.” And, Peter Shaw of the Green Party advised: “Cycling provision is currently seen as a cost rather than an opportunity – we need to be more resolute in the planning stage and look ahead to allow for future growth, that will be cheaper!” Labour candidate David Hide added: “Don’t back inadequate planning proposals! There are plenty of good examples

Wey and Arun Canal Trust is looking for boat crew and skippers to drive boats, prepare them for trips, operate locks and serve refreshments. Ahead of the forthcoming local elections, to debate the provision of safer cycling facilities in the district, Horsham Cycle Forum (HCF) arranged a well attended open meeting entitled Space for Cycling with prospective councillors in attendance at the Horsham District Council’s Chart Way HQ. The meeting was chaired by committed cyclist Rosemary French OBE of the Gatwick Diamond initiative. While there are cycle friendly towns and cities in the UK, Edinburgh being cited as an example, as a country we lag far behind Denmark, with a poster at the meeting proclaiming that Danish levels of safe cycling in the UK would save the NHS by reducing air pollution and injuries. And, if there were separation between cyclists and other road users then more people would be encouraged to cycle. Ruth Fletcher of HCF told the meeting: “The benefits of proper cycle routes are significant cuts in congestion, better health and absence of conflict with other road users. As it is, though, would be cyclists feel unsafe in heavy traffic, yet cycle schemes aren’t expensive or complicated and there is funding available, but this has to be bid for.” The Hop Oast roundabout with its fast moving traffic was mentioned as a dangerous layout for cyclists. The upper stretch of the Worthing Road out of Horsham, the A24 and the poor surfaces in Kings Road and the Carfax are a few of many other examples. Ruth continued:

St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Crawley Road, Roffey, is seeking helpers for its Café to act as baristas, wait on customers and assist in the kitchen on Wednesday and/or Thursday mornings. Cruse Bereavement Care supports people after the death of someone close by delivering support from trained volunteers. The charity is currently looking for a chairperson who would help to ensure high quality and effective service by chairing meetings, liaising with Referral Secretaries, volunteers and administrators. Could you be a Witness Service volunteer at Horsham Magistrates Court? Your role would be to support witnesses and their friends and family when they come to court by giving them practical information about the process, as well as emotional support to help witnesses feel more confident when giving evidence. Safe Haven for Donkeys in the Holy Land is looking for people who can help them mind a stall at the Al Shira’aa Derby Meeting anytime between Thu 22 and Sun 25 June. Horsham District Online Michelle Betts So Spring has well and truly sprung, Piazza Italia has zoomed in and out of Horsham and we’re left thinking what next? With the birds tweeting in the trees, let’s turn to Twitter for some inspiration. At the moment my Twitter feed is full of photos of stunning bluebell walks in Sussex, so much so I’m gong to get out there and explore some of them. Buchan Country Park is close by with plenty of free parking and their Twitter account @ BuchanCP has posted some gorgeous pictures of their bluebells. If you’re looking for something even more rural, a quick Twitter search using #sussex #bluebells will give you plenty of inspiration of where to go for some fresh air and your fill of bluebells! the Bluebell Railway recently. This iconic train visited the railway for a week and stirred up huge excitement amongst fans young and old. It was fantastic to see footage and photos across social media - a search on Twitter using #bluebellrailway #flyingscotsman reveals beautiful photos and some amazing videos. People have commented how long they waited to see this stunning train but said it was worth it to see the train steam by. A truly historic moment for many. There’s certainly plenty happening on Twitter at the moment locally. Horsham Community Responders are volunteers in Horsham trained to attend emergency calls received by the Ambulance Service, and give life-saving care up to when the ambulance arrives. They are currently using social media to support their crowd funding campaign to raise £3,000 to renovate a traditional red phone box (remember them?) for another defibrillator point in Horsham. Follow them on Twitter as @HorshamCFR to find out

how you could help. It all seems to be about keeping Horsham healthy! Whilst @ HorshamCFR are crowding for the defibrillator, Horsham District Council are asking for your views on outdoor gym equipment in Horsham Park. They have an online survey asking for views and you can find this via their @HorshamDC Twitter account if you’d like to have your say. And if being outside to use the gym doesn’t take your fancy I’ve spotted @HorshamHealth tweeting about the grand opening of Men’s Sheds Horsham. They have their own Facebook page, Horsham Men In Sheds, and aim to provide workshops and social centres for Horsham residents. Their grand opening takes place on May 13th - pop over to the Facebook page to register for this event. Anchor Tap wins CAMRA North Sussex Pub of the Year

Duncan Tarrel & Paul Sanders

CAMRA North Sussex branch have chosen the Anchor Tap in Horsham as their Pub of the Year. Dark Star opened the pub in Feb 2016, and it immediately gained a great reputation for the quality and range of both cask and keg beers, and for its lively atmosphere. Horsham already was a great place to visit for real ale, and the Anchor Tap has undoubtedly made it even better. Pictured in the photo above is Duncan Tarrel, Manager of the Anchor Tap, being presented with the Peter King Memorial shield by branch Chair, Paul Sanders. Runners up this year were three excellent pubs; the Brewery Shades on Crawley High Street,

last year’s winner the Malt Shovel in Horsham, and perennial finalist the White Horse at Maplehurst. Voting is already under way for next year’s award, using scores logged by CAMRA members on the www.whatpub.com website throughout the year. The branch run various monthly social events in addition to the Equinox beer festival each spring, which is provisionally booked for March 2nd and 3rd 2018. For details of events, contact us at socialnscamra@ gmail.com, check our website www.northsussex.camra.org. uk, or pick up a copy of CAMRA’s quarterly Sussex Drinker magazine widely available from pubs throughout Sussex.

Fancy early retirement ? – Think again

Entrepreneurs might go into business with the expectation of an early and profitable retirement – but many find they end up working for far longer than they first anticipated. Twenty-something business owners believe they will be putting their feet up by the time they are 50. But those aged over 40 do not expect to rest until they are between 60 and 78. And now almost 60 per cent of all owner-managers predict they will be working full-time into their sixties and beyond, according to the latest NatWest Small Business Research Trust survey. Poor planning could be at the heart of the stark gap between early expectations and the reality of later years. Unless entrepreneurs have made adequate pension provisions, they must consider selling up or closing down their business to raise cash to fund their retirement. Yet a startling 38 per cent of those polled said they had no firm plans about what to do with their business when they stopped working. A further 34 per cent said they would be forced to close it down. •Owner managers must recog-

nise the importance of planning for retirement early on in their entrepreneurial career. • Discovering that siblings, children or other family members do not want to take over the business in due course could mean that they are forced to sell up or arrange for alternative management – by venture capital investors or existing employees for example – in order to retire. • The vast majority of small firms are not handed down to the next generation: just 18 per cent of those polled said they would pass the company on to a family member. The closer retirement looms, the clearer the dilemma becomes. Less than a fifth of business owners with 2 years or more to run before retirement, believe they will be forced to shut down. But over half of owners who expect to retire within the year, and over a third of those who will step down in 2 years, predict their business will close up. With so many companies failing to survive until the next generation, the need for early succession planning must not be underestimated. Need help with your exit planning? June 2017 will mark 55 years of non-stop touring around the globe by The Searchers and their show at The Capitol on Saturday 6 May. Just ahead of that anniversary, will present the history of the band in music and anecdotes, and feature some of their classic hits including: “Sweets For My Sweet”, “Sugar & Spice”, “Needles & Pins”. “Don`t Throw Your Love Away”, “Someday We`re Gonna Love Again”, “When You Walk On The Room”, “Love Potion Number Nine”, “Goodbye My Love”, “He`s Got No Love”, “Take Me For What I`m Worth”, “Take It Or Leave It”, “Bumble Bee”, “Sweets Nothings”, “Have You Ever Loved Somebody”, “When

I Get Home”, “What Have They Done To The Rain”. When the incredible beat boom of the mid sixties, that saw so many bands riding on the crest of a seemingly unstoppable wave of success, subsided, many simply disbanded. The Searchers, however, stayed firmly in place - a constant unit riding out the bad times. Putting the twilight years of the cabaret clubs (looked on as anathema by some) to good use, as the band diligently honed their stage craft and upgraded the quality of the shows, to please a more mature audience, which had replaced the screaming teenage girls who mobbed them in those years of chart topping glory. stand them in good stead for the momentous nostalgia revival, which was to lift them once again to national and international prominence. With a regular touring schedule of two hundred plus shows a year, The Searchers seem to be both unstoppable and indestructible. Their impressive run of hits in those glory years from 1964 to 1966 was worldwide, enabling them to travel the globe constantly. The band has performed for both The Queen and Princess Margaret; headlined over such Motown luminaries as Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas and The Temptations; entertained British troops in The Falklands, Bosnia and Belfast; toured Australia and New Zealand with The Rolling Stones and strutted their stuff in front of 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium as special guests of Cliff Richard. In 2008, The Searchers found themselves back in the charts, when the compilation album The Very Best Of The Searchers climbed to number eleven. It was only prevented from entering the top ten by Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. As recently as 2014, they appeared in Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world, to great acclaim, and not for the first time. This was their third engagement in ‘Sin City’ but, in fact, the USA has regularly played host to them over the years. And on one special evening in New York, Searchers afficionado Marky Ramone of the legendary punk pioneers, was allowed to sit in on drums for Needles & Pins. As well as The Ramones, the band can count Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, The Byrds, Marshall Crenshaw among others, as musicians who came under their influence. In fact Roger McGuinn was recently quoted as saying that without The Searchers, there would have been no Byrds. The band modestly venture that he was being a tad over generous in such high praise, but there are

many who would underline the truth of the statement. The Searchers was founded by guitarist John McNally (who started the outfit like so many other kids of the day, as a skiffle group in the late fifties) and along with bassist/front man Frank Allen, who left hit-making band Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers, to replace Tony Jackson on August 3, 1964, they still maintain the heritage and reputation of the band, which today is almost regarded as a national treasure. There have, of course, been changes in the line-up; Following Jackson`s 1964 departure, Chris Curtis, the drummer and charismatic showman of the band, was to quit at the end of a tour of Australia in March `66, where they had been co-headlining a tour along with The Rolling Stones, a coupling which Frank Allen has wittily described as putting Mother Theresa with Vlad The Impaler. An odd pairing perhaps, but a hugely successful venture. Curtis, in a mentally fragile state at the time, no longer wished to endure the rigours of touring and could not be persuaded to stay. In fact, the drum stool, currently occupied by Scott Ottaway, has seen the most changes over the years. Scott is the fifth to fill the position, since the band`s professional inception back in 1962, and has, at this point, been a Searcher for over five years. In the vocal department, things have been more constant with Spencer James taking over from Mike Pender in 1986 and still handling the majority of the lead vocals today. Pender`s departure saw them enduring one of the band`s least pleasant episodes in its history, due to the inevitable court case that ensued, when their right to the name was in dispute. McNally and Allen were successful and remain owners of that title in law. The association with the aforementioned Cliff Richard provided The Searchers with their largest audience ever, somewhat late in their career. In the summer of 1989, Britain`s first pop knight requested their presence to help him celebrate his thirty years as a star. The audience numbered 80,000 on both performance days. The band has changed radically over the years. In the first flush of chart success, a ‘top of the bill’ spot consisted of a mere twenty minutes, allowing barely enough time for half a dozen songs. Nowadays, still in their iconic high cut three button black suits, white shirts and black ties, the band occupies the stage for the entire evening, presenting what is essentially a history of the band in music and anecdotes, lasting for a full two hours. The distinctive jangle of the twelve string guitar remains a most important feature of The Searchers’ sound and those rich and vibrant harmonies still embellish the songs that have provided a soundtrack to the lives of many. Performance: Saturday 6 May, 8pm, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office: 01403 750220

The King is Back & he’s in Crawley

Voted the world’s No. 1 Elvis tribute act, Ben Portsmouth will be appearing at The Hawth, next week, and showing the audience exactly why. A fan of Elvis Presley from an early age, Ben honed his musi-

cal talent and started his journey as an Elvis tribute artist in 2005, when he formed the ‘Taking Care Of Elvis’ band, which quickly rose through the ranks of Elvis tribute bands and was much in demand. Ben not only looks and sounds

like Elvis, he has an on-stage charisma that has audiences believing at times that they are watching the King himself. In 2006, Ben was voted the best Elvis at the prestigious international Elvis festival, the largest competition of its kind in Europe, and subsequently qualified to represent Europe in the final of the ‘Images of the King’ contest, in Memphis 2010, to find the World Champion Elvis Tribute Artist. Though he faced the daunting task of competing against the best Elvis tribute artists, in what is effectively Elvis’s backyard, Ben was up to the task (inspired no doubt by his first visit to Graceland) and was voted ‘World Champion Elvis Tribute Act’ by both the judges and the public. In August 2012, Ben made history when he won the Elvis Presley Enterprises ‘Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest’ which took place in Memphis, crowning Ben as the ‘Worldwide Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist’ - the only artist from outside the USA to ever win this prestigious title. The following year, he was chosen to headline a special Elvis week on the David Letterman show. Ben’s career in Europe has also taken off, where he is playing on the biggest stages to audiences across Europe that are measured in thousands. Despite his huge success, he enjoys staying in touch with his core fan base and makes sure there is always a place for smaller, more intimate, concerts. Performance: Friday 5 May, 7.30pm, The Hawth Theatre. Tickets: £29, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or by visiting: hawth.co.uk

Will Palmer wins at Monza to lead championship Motor Sport Dave Smith - Sports Editor 20-year-old Southwater racer Will Palmer got his 2017 Eurocup season off to a flying start with a victory in the second race at Monza in the Formula Renault 2.0 Championship. Palmer recorded a fourth place in Saturday’s race 1 before storming to a great win on the Sunday in race 2 that has given him the early lead in this seasons Championship. After starting from second on the grid in race 1 Palmer fell afoul of a much interrupted race due to

numerous crashes and incidents that saw the safety car employed on a number of occasions. After Red Bull Junior Neil Verhagen crashed bringing out the red flags the result was decided from the previous lap, with Palmer classified fourth. Starting from the front of the grid in Sunday’s race 2 Palmer got away quickly only to be again interrupted by crashes and incidents and the inevitable safety car. Despite the issues a determined Palmer look comfortable throughout increasing his lead in the final stages and taking the chequered flag over three seconds ahead of

Sacha Fenestraz and Max Defourny. Speaking after the race, Will said: “It’s been a strong opening weekend of the championship for me. The pace has been really good all week so to finish fourth on Saturday was ultimately a bit disappointing so it was great to put that right today. Now I’m looking forward to the next round on home ground where I’m confident we can have a very good weekend.” The next round of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship takes place at Silverstone on May 13/14.

Runners gearing up for Horsham’s 10k Perkins first home for Joggers The start of last year’s Horsham 10k

Athletics Martin Read - Sports Reporter This year’s Horsham 10K Road Race is on Sunday May 21, again starting and finishing at Horsham Rugby Club. Director of the race for the fifth consecutive year, Paul Aylett tells the District Post: “This is a

popular event, entries are going strongly and we’re well on course to hit our 500 limit. It’s a beautiful course - multi-terrain with two laps, mainly on quiet open roads, including country lanes and a woodland bridleway stretch. There is also a traffic free fun run of about 1200 metres, 10.15 start, around the rugby pitch for under

16 year olds.” The main race, in the Sussex Grand Prix Series, sets off at 11am and prizes are awarded to winners in the various categories. Every runner in both events will be chip timed and given a memento marking their achievement. The runs are organised by Horsham Joggers, this year’s sole administrators, and marshalled by around 80 volunteers, with profits donated to local charities. In 2016 Horsham’s Neil Boniface romped home in 34 minutes and 4 seconds, with Sue Fry winning for the ladies in 38.50, but the race is open to and enjoyed by runners of all abilities. Paul Aylett adding: “Come and join us for a great family experience, we’ve got additional attractions for children, excellent refreshments and – for the first time – a drone taking photographs. Enter early - it’s cheaper than enrolling on the day!” Online entries can be made by following the link on www.horshamjoggers. co.uk /horsham-10K.

Junior Football Horsham FC Youth Horsham FC’s youth set up are looking to expand next season by introducing a number of new sides at various age groups. They are hoping to introduce teams into the Arun & Chichester League at U11, U14 and U15 levels for the 2017/18 season with all matches taking place on Sundays. In addition Horsham Amber is stepping up to U13 level next season and will be holding trials on Sunday April 23 at The Holbrook Club from 10 -11am. The clubs U12, U13 Green, and U16 teams will be holding trials in May and June and those interested are asked to log onto the Horsham FC web site where further information on dates and times will be shown in the Youth section of the site. Horsham’s Youth Secretary, Annie Raby, welcomes any further requests for information, or any queries on the proposed new or

existing youth teams, to be emailed to her at ivan.raby@btinternet.com where she will be glad to answer your questions. Horsham YMCA Youth Horsham YMCA are further developing their commitment to youth football and have appointed Dave Jeal as Youth Manager to start up an Under 18 side. Dave told the District Post: “We’re holding U18 trials at YM’s Gorings Mead ground on Spring Bank Holiday Monday – May 1 – from 11am to 1pm, so there’s an open invitation for budding players to come along! YM already have a flourishing U21 team managed by Ryan King – who’ll now be looking after the reserves - and a tie up with the children’s teams at Horsham Sparrows. But the U18 venture is a new initiative and, subject to confirmation by the League, we’re hoping to formalise the set up with a programme of fixtures now that it will be possible to make more use of the ground.” Dave Jeal

says: “For YM’s U18s I’m going to be assisted by Daniel Redman, and Mark Pavlovic from Roffey Cricket Club. We’re really keen to get the U18s off to a flying start and look forward to welcoming a big, enthusiastic group of players at the trials this coming Monday!” Dave Jeal is available on 07881 822026. Broadbridge Heath Youth Broadbridge Heath FC is holding a fun day fundraiser in memory of Billy Lee with the money raised going the clubs youth set up. The Billy Lee Memorial football match will kick off at Broadbridge Heath Village Centre at 11.00am on Saturday May 13 with a BBQ and other fun events taking place between 11am and 1pm. The club asks that families come along for a few hours of fun to help the club show support for a wonderful family who lost a loved one while at the same time help to raise money for the local club that the family care so much about.

A £12,500 grant from West Sussex County Council has assisted with the funding of a new changing room block that is currently being built at Horsham Rugby Club. Completion of the build is set for August 2017 and to commemorate the grant Councillor Brad Watson OBE handed over a plaque to Richard Ordidge, Vice Chairman and Commercial Manager of Horsham Rugby Club. Brad Watson, a distinguished West Sussex County Councillor and Chairman of the Horsham Conservative Association, has after 32 years as an elected member, decided not to seek

re-election in the upcoming West Sussex County Council elections next month. He, therefore, has automatically stood down from his role as chairman of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, and Chairman of the North Horsham County Local Committee. Richard Ordidge said: “We are delighted to receive this funding support. It will help as part of a continued drive to improve our facilities and maintain our position as the premier rugby club in north Sussex. The investment will improve the quality of the rugby experience and encourage more players to enjoy the game. Furthermore it provides a resource for use by the local community.”

Last gasp YM winner keeps Uckfield in danger zone SCFL Premier Division AFC Uckfield 2 – 3 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor After a season where stringing results together has been an issue, Peter Buckland will be buoyed by this victory over relegation threatened Uckfield, his team’s third win on the trot. It was not all plain sailing for YM however who saw Uckfield take an early lead, had Tom Gilbert sent off, escaped when the hosts missed a penalty, and then hit a late winner to grab the 3 points. Uckfield went at YM from the kick off and were rewarded when after six minutes debutant Michael O’Callaghan played in Shaun Loft, who calmly slotted past YM ‘keeper Mark Fox. The goal woke YM from their early slumbers and Sam Schaaf and Nick Sullivan both came close to an equaliser. At the other end Uckfield – desperate for a win – had Bailo Camara and Loft both forcing Fox into some good stops. The last 2 minutes of the first half contained the defining moments of the game when YM defender Tom Gilbert handled in the area, earning him a red card and presenting Uckfield with an opportunity to go two up. However, in one of those

moments that can decide a season for a team Andrew Dalhouse’s penalty kick was saved by Fox to keep the score at 1-0. If the miss was not bad enough for Uckfield within a minute Schaaf hit a cross towards Sullivan that was intercepted by defender Nick Parsons who diverted the ball into his own net. With the home side still in shock YM then took the lead within two minutes of the restart when Sullivan sneaked in to score what was his 100th goal for the club. To their credit the home side rallied and had the better of the play and were slightly unlucky when a decent shout for another penalty was waved away by referee Walker. Their positive play was rewarded in the 81st minute when substitute Matt Holland hit an unstoppable drive that gave Fox no chance. Then with over 4 minutes of the 5 added played Dean Carden broke away and crossed into the box where Phil Johnson leapt to head past home ‘keeper Ellis Cormack to seal all three points. Peter Buckland expects his side to be up for the visit of Haywards Heath Town in the final game of the season tomorrow (Saturday 29) with Town needing a win to guarantee them being crowned champions.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The principal raison d’etre of Horsham Cricket Club’s Junior Section is to produce players for the senior teams and the conveyor belt of talent has delivered outstanding cricketers to the county side with Robin Martin-Jenkins, Chris Nash and Will Beer being but recent examples.

There is also a commitment to provide healthy, safe enjoyment, with teams playing in the IDentilam Colts Cricket League and the North & Mid Sussex Junior League from U9 to U16. But, Horsham Cricket Juniors Co-ordinator Graham Charlton tells the District Post: “Traditionally we’ve been very strong but we’ve looked at our set up and asked ourselves how we can do it even better. We’ve

appointed Alan Smith as our Head Coach for the juniors – he’s got experience of working with Sussex age group squads, is very enthusiastic and will be overseeing our summer training plans with the team of other coaches. There are training nights for boys and girls on Wednesdays for U14-U16 and Fridays for U9-U13, both sessions running from 6-7.30 pm. It all starts next week, so come on kids give it a try with two free taster sessions!” This coincides with the ECB launching their youth cricket countrywide “All Stars” programme. Horsham CC, along with other local clubs, is a centre for this programme. The purpose of “All Stars” is to inspire boys and girls from 5 to 8 years old to take up cricket. Parents can sign them up for eight fun-filled one hour sessions - on Fridays 4.30 – 5.30 pm - from experienced ECB qualified coaches at a total cost of £40 and every child will receive a personalised T-shirt, bat, backpack and various other goodies!” All Stars will start at Horsham CC on Friday, May 19. Graham continues: “For parents that cannot commit to an 8 week programme, there is also mini cricket at Horsham Cricket Club from 4.30 to 5.45 pm, again on Fridays, for boys and girls from the same age group - 5 to 8 – at a cost of £3 per session with no registration necessary.” The Short Legs sessions start on Friday, May 5. Graham Charlton – whose son Nick was a colt at Horsham and now plays for the senior sides - sums up with: “Our coaching has always been pretty good, but we’re now looking to really take it up a level. Junior cricket must be enjoyable and our aim is for the children to have fun while learning cricket skills.”

Christ’s Hospital pupil Lennox selected for England Junior Rugby

Following in the footsteps of former Christs Hospital pupil Joe Launchbury, current Year 11 pupil Lennox Anyanwu has been selected in the starting XV to represent England against Wales this Sunday, April 30. Over the Easter holidays Lennox Anyanwu and fellow Christs Hospital pupil Matthew Attalah represented Harlequins in the RFU Academies U16 festival at Wellington College. These matches are used as a final selection for the England U16 team. Both boys performed very well with Matthew scoring a spectacular try against Wasps. Lennox impressed throughout the week and has just received the news that he has been selected to represent England. Lennox was over the moon when he received a message from Joe Launchbury to wish him luck for this Sunday’s match that read: “Lennox, good luck for this weekend’s game against Wales.

Christ’s Hospital’s Lennox Anyanwu

It is just reward for all your hard work and talent. It’s a fantastic opportunity for you to play with and against the best players of your age group and test yourself. I’m sure I speak on behalf of all Old Blues when I say I wish you all the best for the game and hope it’s the first of many. Make

sure you enjoy it.” Dave Messenger, Director of Sport at CH commented: Without doubt Lennox is a role model for other CH pupils and it is fitting that as the first recipient of the Christ’s Hospital Joe Launchbury rugby scholarship, he, like Joe, will be representing his country.”

Ryman League Division One South Horsham 0 – 1 Hythe Town Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Horsham’s eight years of calling Gorings Mead home came to an end last weekend with their final league game of the season. The match ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat that summed up a season in which the Hornets have put in some excellent performances, often against higher placed teams, while losing points to sides they should have beaten. The lack of an out and out striker since the loss of Terry Dodd

through long term injury has played a big part in some of those narrow defeats and has certainly reduced the points they could have amassed. All in all however a safe sixteenth place with 61 points represents a good season and a good platform for manager Dom Di Paola to build on. After the visitor’s Dean Grant had hit an early shot straight at ‘keeper Josh Pelling, Town’s Ben Wilson headed Tom Lawley’s effort off the line with visiting ‘keeper Joe Mant well beaten. Horsham were having the better of the early play and Mant was forced into a fine save to deny Steve Metcalf but eventually Town came more into it and created

Ashley Jones, 100 Horsham appearances & Josh Pelling Players Player of the Year chances at the other end, all of which failed to worry Pelling. The first half came to a close with another scare for Horsham as Mulrooney-Skinney had his goal bound attempt superbly blocked by Alex Duncan. The start of the second half was signalled by the referee’s whistle but the players seemed to have already hung up their boots for the summer as a long period of uninspiring stalemate ensued. Things did pick up with half chances falling to Darren Boswell, Tom Lawley and Scott Kirkwood but it then became Towns turn to take the lion’s share of the possession and chances with Campbell, Dave Cook and Sam Adams

all coming close to scoring. Still in the ascendancy and with 73 minutes played the visitors scored what proved to be the only goal of the game. Campbell neatly played a through ball to Grant who side footed past Pelling and with Horsham’s lack of fire power up front one goal was enough to see Hythe Town through to the final whistle. Being critical, the final league position should have been much better having thrown away points in a number of games. Being realistic, a comfortable return to the Ryman League and the securing of a new permanent home for the club amounts to an excellent season for Horsham FC … and all concerned will take that.

Horsham men retain the Sussex Cup Horsham have won the Sussex Cup

Sussex Knockout Cup Final Horsham Mens 1st XI 4 - 3 Worthing Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their final match of the

season, at Lewes Horsham’s men hung on to the Sussex Cup, having won the title for the first time last year, but the result was not a foregone conclusion. Considering that Worthing play in two leagues below Horsham, perhaps an easier ride might

have been anticipated, Horsham though, almost paid the penalty for over-confidence. In a busy weekend for Horsham Hockey Club, including four other games, three of which were finals, players were in demand and several of the men’s cup team found themselves involved in an earlier lost cause. The danger of under-rating Worthing almost ended in calamity with Horsham having to fight hard to pull off their last ditch win. Horsham led after quarter of an hour thanks to an Ellis Woolley trademark short corner drag flick. However, Worthing was up for a shock and equalised before cake-walking through Horsham’s defence to lead 2-1 at the break. A second half change in tactics saw Horsham coach Dom Male bang the ball into the D for John Burroughs to gather from the fracas and finalise and although Horsham subsequently held sway, it was Worthing who scored next. Horsham had two players carded off, until Woolley levelled from

another short corner. In the dying minutes Joey Humphreys then demonstrated his prowess at running through, earning a short calmly slotted home for a hat trick by Horsham’s leading scorer Woolley, averting the risks of a shootout. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “We won by the skin of our teeth, but almost took victory too much for granted. Fortunately our short corner supremo saw us home and in the end the gulf between the two sides’ leagues told in our favour. Hats off to Worthing they pushed us all the way, providing great entertainment for the sizeable crowd.” Horsham 2s, the U21s and U14 all came unstuck in their finals, good experience for younger players against more seasoned, bigger opposition. Horsham Ladies 1s meet East Grinstead in their Sussex Cup final on May 6 and the club’s Presidents Day is on Sunday May 14.

Broadbridge Heath completed their season at the Leisure Centre with a 1-0 win over a much improved Hassocks side that have just one defeat in their last five matches. Heath had the first shot at goal on 4 minutes when Alex Parsons’ free kick went narrowly over the crossbar. The visitor’s responded well and created several chances with ‘keeper Michael Chester having a few worrying moments as a few attempts went wide of his goal. With 10 minutes of the half remaining Shaun Findlay received the ball wide on the left and went on to beat three Hassocks defenders before hitting a left foot shot across the face of goal that missed the far post by the narrowest of margins. Minutes later Findlay was again in action with a shot from 20 yards that ‘keeper Chester blocked at the near post before the ball came out to Jamie Robinson whose effort was deflected off the goal line for a corner. In first half added time Jamal Sultan drilled a low right foot shot at goal but he too was denied by a defender and somehow the score remained 0-0 at the break. Heath started the second half as they had ended the first, on the ascendency, and the Hassocks keeper James Broadbent was quick to react and deny Findlay a goal attempt. The deadlock was finally broken in the 60th minute, Parson’s advanced down the right and picked out Dean Wright and the Heath striker took a quick snap shot at goal which Broadbent blocked but the ball came straight back to Wright who placed his shot wide of the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. Heath continued pushing forward and Sultan was unlucky with a shot that crashed against the underside of the bar, Findlay had another effort just wide of the target and George Cousins hit a right foot shot wide. Despite the chances no further goals were scored and Bears took a welldeserved win. Heath Manager Steve Painter said “I’m pleased with the win, there were some good performances out their today, a special mention to my back four with an average age of just 19, keeping a clean sheet at this level is quite impressive.” Heath end their season away at fifth placed Eastbourne Town tomorrow (Saturday 29).
