Customers hit a staggering £1million to protect animals phil dennett News Editor

Customers at a Horsham-based firm have helped it reach a £1million milestone for an animal charity. Pet insurer MORE TH>N announced that it had made what it called a “staggering” £1million in donations to the RSPCA, based at the village of Southwater. This amount has been reached primarily through the firm giving 50p for every pet insurance policy bought by its customers since the insurer started partnering with the charity three years ago. It is the equivalent of paying the total running costs of two re-homing centre for a year. MORE TH>N also donates six weeks of free pet insurance cover for every dog and cat rescued from an RSPCA centre and an additional £20 if the policy is taken up and when it renews. The money donated will go towards the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of the UK’s unwanted pets. Some of the various

uses for donations include £48,000 pays to train a RSPCA inspector which will help fight animal cruelty on the front line; £58,000 pays to keep a RSPCA inspector on the road for a year; £22,000 trains five veterinary nurses; £2,000 pays for a dog’s food for a whole year in one of the charity’s centres; £68,000 pays the annual bills for one of the RSPCA’s animal hospitals, while £475,000 pays to run one of the charity’s re-homing centres for an entire year. The full £1million donation is enough money estimated to pay for the RSPCA to rescue, care for and re-home 1,500 dogs from puppy farms. Chris Bainbridge, pet product manager at MORE TH>N, said: “We always try to encourage responsible pet ownership through our campaigns so having the RSPCA as our charity partner is a great fit. Hitting this significant milestone is something our customers and staff are really proud of and we will continue to raise as much money as we can for this fantastic, worthwhile cause.” Sam Gaines, leading pet specialist at the RSPCA, said: “It’s amazing that MORE TH>N has raised £1 million for the vital work

On Sunday 7th May, as part of Horsham’s English Festival, The Loxwood Joust is pre-viewing some of the activities, entertainment and food that will be found at its two weekends of mediaeval mayhem in August. Throughout the day, in the demonstration area, situated in the Market Square outside Bills café and restaurant, four fully armoured knights will provide displays of weaponry and combat. In addition there will be talks on the weapons, showing how and what they were used for and always eager to answer questions, or provide information on their characters, these fine ‘battle ready’ knights will also be available to pose for any photos that may require ‘a knight in shining armour’! In addition, a mediaeval leather worker will be demonstrating the skills of his trade and The Green Man catering company will be tempting visitors with ‘saucy trollops sausages’ to alleviate any

‘battle weary’ hunger pangs. However, no mediaeval event would be complete without the traditional bottle of Mead and The Loxwood Joust’s own meads, Traditional, Tournament and Christmas blends, will be available for purchase from the information stand, along with a selection of floral circlets and children’s toy armour and weaponry. Now in its sixth year, The Loxwood Joust will be again stepping back in time on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th August to portray the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at these unique, fun and educational days out for all the family. Located at the enchanted Loxwood Meadow, The Loxwood Joust is the most spectacular mediaeval festival in the Realm and hosts an unrivalled programme of mediaeval mayhem. Charity Golf Day a Huge Hit 17-year-old died in

Lower Beeding crash

Rookwood Golf Course and Warnham Barn played host to a charity golf day on Saturday 29 April, raising in excess of £4,000 for the Liver Intensive Therapy Unit at King’s College Hospital, London. The 17th Century Warnham Barn, with its spectacular oak beams and high ceilings, made the perfect backdrop, lending itself to the versatiliy required for such an event. Golfers were able to meet for a pre-round drink, before heading out to the course to tee off on the 1st - just a short stroll from the barn clubhouse. After a round, the players regrouped at the Barn to enjoy a delicious barbeque and prize giving,

Jogger might help in rape investigation A jogger might be able to help in a sexual assault enquiry. Police believe she spoke to a girl who later reported an alleged rape to police. The woman was running along a path alongside Steyning Cricket Ground at about 4pm on April 7. She stopped and spoke to a teenage girl who was stuck on a bush as she attempted to get back to the path. The woman was running towards the Downs and had a small dog with her. She was wearing running clothes. Detective Constable Andy Roe said: “The girl was leaving the area where she was assaulted at the time she spoke to the jogger. She could hold important information to be able to help us.” A 17-year-old boy from Billingshurst has been arrested on suspicion of rape and has been released under investigation. followed by a generously supported raffle. The Barn was later transformed, to host a disco, with the bar open late into the night, and much dancing. Organiser, and Food and Beverage Manager at The Warnham Barn, Kathryn Botting, said: “I am delighted with the support the event has gathered, and wish to thank all of the players, sponsors and supporters of the event for their generosity and for making this day so memorble. “We’ve had people ask us if this will turn into an annual event, and we very much hope that will be the case.” Rookwood prides itself on being

“full of character and charm”, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Since opening in 1997, the course and the barn have gone from strength to strength, hosting countless golf days, fabulous weddings and special events. The beautiful par 72 course measures 6,200 yards and is open access golf for all ages and abilities, with a mix of gently undulating parkland and mature woodland. A 17-year-old youth from Lower Beeding was one of the victims of a double fatal crash near the village, it has been confirmed. The names of two people who died in the crash at Lower Beeding on the Horsham road have been released by police after they were formally identified. They were Lewis James Gardner-Smith, 17, of Sandygate Lane, Lower Beeding and Ricarda Chapman, 25, of Covert Mead, Handcross, near Horsham. They died on April 18 when their car left the A281 near Lower Beeding, north of Cowfold, and crashed into a garden. The crash happened at around 10.45pm and involved a black Vauxhall Meriva. It

crashed about 200 metres north of the A281’s junction with Picts Lane. Police say no other vehicle was involved. Police officers investigating a possible reason for the crash are still keen to talk to anyone who saw what happened or who may have noticed the car being driven shortly beforehand. They are asked to report details online at https://sussex.police.uk/contact-us/ response-to-appeal/ , by emailing collision.appeal@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or by phoning 101, quoting Operation Waddington. Evidence will be gathered about the circumstances of the crash and a report later submitted to the West Sussex Coroner for an inquest to be opened, as is routine for such fatalities.

Youngsters act on Globe stage Students from a Horsham school got up close to the Great Bard in a trip to London. Farlington School’s Prep 6 girls were lucky to have the opportunity to act a few lines on the Globe Theatre’s stage when they went to London recently. As they were studying Mac-

beth in class, they took part in a drama workshop at the theatre and learned lots about the Bard of Stratford from the neighbouring exhibition. The school said all the pupils were enthusiastic about the day and say they would like to see a real production at The Globe.

Racers are being recruited for this year’s 15th St Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival. The charity is seeking local businesses to sign up for the annual challenge on September 10 from 10am to 4pm at Tilgate Park, Crawley. The colourful festival is one of the local hospice’s biggest and most exhilarating fundraisers. Every year, it attracts thousands of spectators to cheer on racing teams, but this year the hospice is hoping more take to the water. Organisers say the festival is a great branding, team building, and networking day out but more importantly it is fun. Many businesses return year on year to compete with other local businesses in adrenaline-fuelled races

in 40ft Chinese Dragon Boats. Darren Buche was captain of last year’s winning team, Beemer, who represented Vines Gatwick. He said: “Last year was the third year we’d taken part in St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival and we were thrilled to take the trophy. It was a fantastic day and I’d encourage any business to take part this year- although we’ll be racing hard to keep up with the competition!” As well as being a fantastic chance for businesses to support their local hospice, the Dragon Boat Festival is a family day out with activities, entertainment and delicious food and drink. Since the festival began, it has raised more than half a million pounds, and made a huge difference to local

terminally ill people and their family and friends. Laura Kelly, Corporate Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said: “Our Dragon Boat Festival is an oarsome corporate challenge and we can’t wait to welcome local businesses to the water. Our teams always tell us how much they enjoy being able to bring family and friends to cheer them on too, and it’s lovely to host an event that gives colleagues and their wider family and friends a chance to come together while helping our hospice.” Any firm interested in taking part may contact Laura Kelly or Suzanne Davis in St Catherine’s Corporate Team on 01293 447333, or visit: www.stch.org.uk and search Dragon Boat Festival.

Top award for Sussex justice success Three arrested in drugs raids of the social outcomes, ranging from victims to homeowners to whole community regeneration.” The judges praised the Sussex Restorative Justice Partnership’s results, saying: “We were impressed by the diversity of the social outcomes, ranging from victims to homeowners to whole community regeneration.”

Celebrating success

We were impressed by the diversity of the social outcomes, ranging from victims to homeowners to whole community regeneration Putting victims and offenders together in Sussex has won a pioneering scheme a national award. The idea is that thieves and people who commit frauds and assaults can try to understand the misery they cause. For its work the Sussex Restorative Justice Partnership has won the Investment Strategy of the Year award at the inaugural Public Finance Innovation Awards. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “The awards celebrate achievements within public finance and governance and I am so proud that the partnership was recognised for its innovative use of Ministry

of Justice funding over the past two-and-a-half years. “Before our partnership was formed in September 2014, restorative justice was inconsistent across Sussex. Now we have a dedicated group of practitioners, criminal justice agencies and voluntary organisations from across the spectrum of criminal justice, including the National Probation Service, Her Majesty’s Prison Service, Sussex Police and Victim Support, working together to ensure both victims and offenders are offered the chance to access a restorative service. The judges praised the partnership’s results, commenting: “We were impressed by the diversity

Mrs Bourne has also raised with the Chief Constable of Sussex the issue of road safety in Sussex. She said the main risks on our roads were people not wearing seatbelts, driving too fast, drinkdriving and drug-driving, and distractions while driving. Sussex roads are particularly popular with motorcyclists in the summer months and the Chief Constable outlined a number of measures to improve their safety including better signage, education campaigns through the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and also the BikeSafe initiative.

Three people were arrested as police executed drugs warrants in Horsham. It was part of a tough police crackdown on drugs in West and East Sussex. Officers swooped on a property in Honeysuckle Walk about lunchtime last Friday, discovering a quantity of Class A drugs inside. A 26-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class A - crack cocaine and obstructing a police officer. A 45-year-old woman from Horsham was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class A – other. Police also arrested a 46-year-old man of no fixed address on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class A , namely crack

cocaine. All three were taken into custody. Inspector Steve Chalcraft of the Horsham neighbourhood policing team said: “We are targeting drug dealers who come into the county to exploit vulnerable people. “Our action will send a strong message that these criminal activities will not go unchecked. Drug misuse can have devastating effects on the local community as well as the person taking the drugs, so I would encourage people to report suspicious activity and tell us if someone they know might be being targeted by drug dealers.” If you have information, you can report online to https:// report.police.uk/ or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).

Children will see Paddington Bear wave off walkers off at the start of Horsham’s Annual Riverside Walk. This year, organisers, Horsham Town Community Partnership, are asking those taking part on July 15 to collect cash for the local children’s charity Action Medical Research, based in Horsham. Paddington has been at the heart of its fundraising since 1976. The charity is currently funding research into conditions including prematurity, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer. For the summer walk, joggers and walkers will leave the Rugby Club car park in Hammerpond Road at 10 am and, in a new attraction this year, children under the age of eight years can take part in a ‘Treasure Hunt’ by spotting clues along the way. Chesworth Farm, Warnham Nature Reserve and New House Farm will be the refreshment points on the 13-mile route which is being taken clockwise. Paddington will pose for photographs and visitors

can enter a photograph competition. Organisers say there were many good entries last year and, as before, prizes will be presented to the best. The Walk Leader is assisted by experienced Marshalls and a First Responder will be on hand for anyone who requires medical assistance. A map will be available on the day but it can be downloaded from the website www.horsham. community where more information can be seen. Many participants of the Walk complete the circular route while others enjoy a shorter trek as it is handy for bus routes and access to the town. A popular feature of previous Walks is the free minibus service to take tired walkers back to their cars at the Rugby Club and this will again be available. Registration beforehand helps organisers know the likely numbers taking part for catering purposes. Please register by email on horshamriversidewalk@gmail.comor phone 07780 701184

It’s a real boost to the club to have such a famous and talented boxer visit us Horsham Boxing Club had a special visitor this week in the shape of former WBC Cruiserweight World Champion and recent conqueror of David Haye - Tony ‘Bomber’ Bellew. Bellew was in Sussex filming for the popular fishing programme The Big Fish Off and, thanks to longstanding trainer John Essex, Horsham was chosen as a local boxing club to film the introductions to the episodes cast. Alongside Bellew, were Dean Macy, former Olympic athlete and Dave Coldwell, Bellew’s trainer. After a few hours of filming in

the club, Bellew spent time meeting some of Horsham’s young boxers, including Max Cole, who is competing this Saturday in Portsmouth, ahead of a potential National Minors Quarter Final the following week. Other boxers competing soon, who were lucky enough to meet Bellew, were Hamish Millar, in action in Crawley on Friday May 12, and Tom Tennant and Harvey Divall, both travelling to Whitstable today. Horsham also has 11 youngsters, aged 7-12, on a skills show in Crawley on Sunday, making up a busy weekend. Josh Mercer competed in the

famous and talented boxer visit us, and provides inspiration to all the young boxers and the seniors too” Dan Purchase, club secretary and trainer, said: “ I have already had a number of enquiries about joining the gym, just a day after we posted pictures of Bellew on Social Media. As a lifelong Everton fan, I was particularly happy to meet Tony, and my 9 year old son, Louie, hasn’t stopped talking about having his picture taken alongside his hero. A huge thanks must go to John, for arranging this, and it can only do the club’s exposure benefit”

A young first-aider who put into practise what he was taught has won official praise. Max Ray, 12, went to help a badly bleeding boy in a park, and remembered what to do. As a result the boy was given immediate first aid treatment before paramedics arrived . Terry Vaughan, St John Ambulance’s Area President for Horsham, was so proud of Max that he contacted the District Post. He said: “I’m very proud when I hear about our volunteer first aiders helping someone in our community. “None more so when one of those volunteers is a Cadet, aged just 12. Some time ago Max , along with other pupils at St Mary’s School, heard a talk from the

charity’s first aid trainer Andrew Edwards. Max was so impressed he asked his parents if he could volunteer with St John Ambulance Cadets. Since joining the Horsham Unit around a year ago he has learnt many life skills, including first aid. “So, when one his friends fell and cut his knee while playing in the park, Max knew exactly what to do. The knee was cut badly, needing an ambulance and stitches, but thanks to his first aid training Max kept calm and could help his friend. Max is a wonderful example of how first aid knowledge can give you the confidence to do the right thing, and you’re never too young, or too old, to learn these life saving skills. “

At engineering session working lunch

An engineer from the firm that designed Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club a stadium fit for Premiership football was among those who advised students busy preparing for life after college. In widely varying sessions, the Collyer’s youngsters attended a working lunch, a UCAS exhibition, an Oxbridge Conference and an engineering session. Students and staff welcomed Alan Taylor, a Civil Engineer from the Hove based consulting engineering company, Hemsley Orrell Partnership. The firm was responsible for the design of the AMEX stadium in Brighton, which next season will stage Premier-

ship football for the first time in the Falmer-based club’s history. In another session Ian Robinson, Business Support and HR Manager, April Tilson, former Collyer’s student and current Business Admininstration apprentice and Lara Batley, former Collyer’s student now Marketing Co-ordinator, from Assurity Consulting visited Collyer’s to host a two hour ‘working lunch’ for 25 Collyer’s students. Assurity currently has two former Collyer’s students as apprentices and is keen to recruit two more each year, as a key part of growing its business. Gardeners help hospice meet growing demand Last year’s last year’s Fair.

Gardening fans will be helping a hospice raise money for its work. The New Horizons Appeal, in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice, is inviting people to get their garden ready for the season with their annual Garden and Local Produce Fair. Returning to the exclusive grounds of Cuckfield Park on May 18 organisers say the prestigious fair has become known as West Sussex’s mini Chelsea. Bringing together a range of established traders to sell quality products including specialist plants, gardening products and locally produced food, the event is a favourite in many people’s calendars, with many traders returning year on year. As well as gifts to buy, homemade cakes and lunches will also be available, and if you really fancy indulging there’s chance to buy

advance tickets for a bubbly breakfast, which also gives you a sneak preview of stalls ahead of general public entrance. Run by St Catherine’s voluntary New Horizons Appeal Committee, last year the fair attracted more than 800 visitors and raised more than £6,000 for the hospice. St Catherines has approval for a new centre at Pease Pottage to meeting increased demand for its services. Since 1989, the New Horizons Appeal has raised more than £2 million for St Catherine’s with the support of local people who attend their events, which also include a lunch club, charity golf day and Autumn Gift Fair. Liz Kitchen, New Horizons Chairperson, said: “By supporting our Garden and Local Produce Fair, you’re helping St Catherine’s

be there to provide expert end of life care to local people when life comes full circle. We’re really looking forward to welcoming people to the fair and would like to thank Strutt and Parker and Thakeham for their support in helping us host this fantastic, spring day out.” Advance tickets for the Garden and Local Produce Fair’s special bubbly breakfast and stall preview, from 9am are £12.50. General public entry will be £5 per person with the fair open from 10.30am to 3.30pm. For more details and to book bubbly breakfast tickets please visit: www.stch.org.uk/newhorizons, contact Suzanne Connor, New Horizons Appeal Co-ordinator on: 01293 447367 or email newhorizons@stch.org.uk

Remembering Ian as solicitors back hospice The late Ian McKenzie

Solicitors in Horsham are among those taking part in a scheme to help hospice patients. They are offering free session making a will in return for a donation to St Catherine’s Hospice during its Make A Will Fortnight which starts on Monday. From May 8 to 19 some solicitors across Sussex and Surrey, including Coole Bevis LLP, Mancini Legal, and Rawlinson Butler LLP, in Horsham have set aside a limited number of appointments to help people make or update a

will in exchange for a donation to St Catherine’s. Suggested donations are £100 for a single will and £150 for joint wills, but the hospice says please consider the value of the professional advice and time given by a solicitor when making a donation. Chris and Neil Mackenzie both chose to leave St Catherine’s a gift in their will as a thank you for the care the hospice gave their son, Ian. They said: “We made our wills during a previous Make a Will Fortnight, and were

able to include gifts to family and friends, and to St Catherine’s. It was much easier than we thought and we don’t know why we didn’t do it sooner. By including gifts to the hospice in our wills, it’s our one final opportunity to do some good, and help local people. We positively encourage others to do the same.” Experts say making a will is the only way to make sure that when you die, those you care about will benefit in the way you’d like. Diane Lane, Solicitor in the Wills and Probate Department at Goodhand and Forsyth said: “A will clearly expresses your wishes about your estate making it easier for your loved ones once you pass away. With St Catherine’s Make A Will Fortnight, you can support an excellent cause while protecting your family and assets too.” The hospice also receives a valuable contribution to its funds from legacies. It says: “The care the hospice provides to one in four people is funded by gifts in wills. For those people, you could leave no greater gift. “ For a full list of solicitors taking part in St Catherine’s Make A Will Fortnight, please visit www.stch.org.uk, contact Andy Perry on: 01293 447369, or email:andyperry@stch.org.uk.

Historic house opens for the season Counting the votes today The house

The Kings Garden

Thousands of people in Horsham district went to the polls on Thursday to choose their county councillors. Results were being counted today, Friday, for the West Sussex County Council elections. Councillors will serve in wards across the county, including Horsham district. Only a history-making shock would shift the controlling Conservatives from power at County Hall, Chichester. The party dominated the seats before the May 4 vote, with the make-up of the council being 43 Conservatives, UKIP 10, Liberal Democrats seven, Labour six with three Independent members and two vacancies. Within Horsham district, voting took place for seats at

Billingshurst, Bramber Castle, Broadbridge, Henfield, Holbrook, Horsham East, Horsham Hurst, Horsham Riverside, Pulborough, St Leonards Forest, Southwater and Nuthurst, and Storrington. Results from within Horsham District will be published in next week’s edition, May 12. Voters will be returning to the polls across the district on June 8 in the General Election called by Prime Minister Theresa May in April. At present Horsham District is served by two Conservative MPs, Jeremy Quin for Horsham constituency and Nick Herbert for Arundel and South Downs constituency, part of which falls within Horsham district.

Historic house and garden lovers are enjoying the start of the new season at St Mary’s in Bramber. That included a traditional May Day Fair with a May Queen, and a range of stalls selling plants, cakes, preserves, jewellery, books, etc. Visitors to St. Mary’s are welcomed to this lived-in home

by owners Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton, who have laboured away for more than 30 years to restore this beautiful place to its original splendour, with the help of a small army of over 40 dedicated volunteers. Their achievement was recognised when St Mary’s won the coveted national Hudson’s Heritage Award for Best Restoration in 2011, and was awarded ‘highly commended’ in the Beautiful South Tourism Awards 2015-16. The owners say that the result is a “magical, timeless place, which is both peaceful and fascinating.” The Painted Room, decorated for the intended visit

of Elizabeth I, is said to particularly breathtaking. Visitors can enjoy afternoon teas in the charming countrystyle tearoom, and the elegant Victorian Music Room makes an ideal venue for concerts, weddings and other events. The opening concert of the season on Saturday will be a Spring Piano Recital by the talented young concert pianist Craig Greene, who will be playing music by Mussorgsky and Dvorak. There are five acres of grounds which include formal gardens with amusing topiary and an exceptional example of the prehistoric tree Ginkgo biloba. The Victorian ‘Secret’ Garden, with its original fruit-wall and pineapple pits, is a haven of tranquility. Visitors can enjoy the Jubilee Rose Garden, the Terracotta Garden, the unusual circular Poetry Garden, the new Landscape Water Garden with island and waterfall, the fully restored Victorian Glasshouse and the Rural Museum. St Mary’s House and Gardens are open to the public on Sundays, Thursdays and Bank Holiday Mondays, from 2 to 6pm. For more information, or to book tickets for the Spring Piano Recital on May 6, visit the website www.stmarysbramber.co.uk or telephone 01903 816205.

More help to combat cyber stalkers

Potential victims of cyber stalking in West and East Sussex will be helped by extra funding to help them avoid serious situations. Sussex Police Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has awarded £5,000 to help tackle the issue. The funding, from the Commissioner’s Safer in Sussex Community Fund, will go to Sussex-based anti-stalking charity Veritas Justice so it can host a series of workshops to help people stay safe online. The announcement of the award coincided with National Stalking Awareness Week, and Mrs Bourne, from West Sussex, said: “Research shows 80 per cent of stalking and harassment crimes involve some form of online cyber-stalking. “Stalking is an appalling crime that can destroy lives. “This year the emphasis of the awareness week has been on helping police

and support workers to recognise the signs of stalking at an early stage and focus on the motives, not just on specific incidents or behaviour. “It’s vital that we encourage victims of stalking to report it and provide the protection they need so that they do not have to live in fear.” Veritas Justice is a community interest company which was set up in 2014 to help local victims of stalking. In July 2015 it was awarded a £10,000 grant by the Office of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner to develop and pilot an innovative advocacy and support service for all victims of stalking. Veritas spokesperson Sam Taylor said: “Our pilot highlighted the significant challenges that victims face when they are pursued by

their stalkers, whilst trying to keep themselves and their families safe. We continue to work tirelessly to raise awareness of the complexities of this devastating crime. “Our findings confirm the desperate need for a local specialist stalking service that works in partnership with other professionals and services to improve outcomes for victims.” Anyone who has been a victim of stalking can report it to Sussex Police by calling 101 or visiting https://sussex.police.uk/contactus/report-online. If in immediate danger, always call 999. To contact Veritas Justice, please visit http://veritas-justice.co.uk. You can also find out how to access local support services at www. safespacesussex.org.uk, even if you haven’t reported a crime to the police.

Bus passengers can use free “wifi” just installed on a company’s fleet. Metrobus has installed the facility on 148 buses, which serve areas of Sussex. The company says it means passengers can get connected on every journey, check their emails or social media and surf the web anytime and anywhere during their journey. In Horsham and surrounding areas Metro runs the 23, 51, 61, 65, 93, 98, 200 and 398 buses. Metrobus Managing Director Martin Harris said: “This initiative is very significant for us as it’s one of the key ways we can encourage people to get out of their cars and onto buses as it al-

lows passengers to use their time productively while travelling. “We’re all so time-poor these days that we can do without losing more of it to commuting. What’s more, travelling by bus means we’re not clogging up the streets and the air with cars and their emissions. “We’ve got to start thinking differently as a society about cars. Travelling by bus will always be a greener way to travel. And congestion is one of the biggest challenges facing our towns and cities. We need to get people out of their cars and onto buses and bikes. I’m delighted this investment will make it more attractive and viable to travel by bus.”

Visitors come up trumps The party in Washington

Students came up trumps when they visited Washington for an educational visit. During the trip the Politics and Law students and teachers from Collyer’s saw President Donald Trump’s helicopter lift off from the high-security White House. Nearly 50 students enjoyed a week in the U. S capital at one of the most interesting times in recent U.S. political history. A packed week saw students visit key political and legal sites such as the U.S. Capitol, where they were lucky enough to witness the senate in session, and Supreme Court. Subject Leader

for Government and Politics George Lear said: “The students learned a huge amount about the way that the American political and legal systems work and talked to Americans about their views on recent developments.” A highlight for many on the trip was a visit to the Newseum, a museum about the importance of a free media, which seemed particularly relevant in light of some presidential criticism of mainstream media outlets which occurred while the group were in the city. Second year Government and Politics student Emily Ward said: “The time we spent at

the Newseum was so important and very moving.” George Lear said: “A visit to the 9/11 memorial to the victims of terror attack on the Pentagon was particularly poignant and it was aptly followed by a visit to the honour guard at Arlington national cemetery, where students also paid their respects at the Kennedy Graves. “Another memorable sight was the Lincoln Memorial where students stood on the spot where Martin Luther King delivered his ‘I have a dream’ speech. Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Nicholls said: “The trip is extremely beneficial to our students’ A-level studies, as it gives them a valuable insight into the complex American justice system and political landscape. “I gather that on the penultimate day the group enjoyed another surprise, as students saw Donald Trump’s helicopter take off from the White House lawn on the first leg of a weekend trip to Florida. It’s safe to say therefore, that the Washington trip certainly came up trumps!”

Protection against fraudsters The Age UK Horsham District teamed up with Financial Fraud Action UK’s Take Five campaign to help people in Horsham District protect themselves and loved ones from falling victim to financial fraudsters. As part of the activity, Age UK Horsham District hosted Take Five Over Tea involving a range of speakers who provided advice and answer questions on the issue of financial fraud. Take Five is led by FFA UK and brings together all major banks and key financial services providers across the UK. The campaign, launched in September 2016, aims to put consumers and businesses back in control with straight-forward advice to help prevent financial fraud. It focuses on financial frauds directly targeting customers, such as email deception, known as phishing, and phone and textbased scams, sometimes known as vishing and smishing, and is designed to remind people that it pays to stop and think. It also aims to help people protect

themselves from criminals duping them into moving their money into bank accounts controlled by the fraudsters. Speakers at the session on Wednesday included representatives from Horsham District Council, Lloyds Bank in Horsham and West Sussex County Council Trading Standards. There was also the opportunity for people to take advantage of Age UK Horsham District’s ‘Check or Shred’ service, with people encouraged to bring along any emails or post for review that they have received and were unsure about. Sonia Mangan, Chief Executive Officer from Age UK Horsham District said, “We are delighted to have teamed up with the Take Five campaign to host this session. Financial fraud is a very real problem and I am sure many of us know someone who has fallen victim. The three-hour session took place at Age UK Horsham District, Lavinia House, Dukes Square, inHorsham.

Helping those thousands of miles away John

A teacher ran a marathon to raise money for a school thousands of miles away. John Dwyer, Farlington School’s Head of Geography, is still welcoming contributions after running for Nalango School in Uganda. Last summer John cycled from the Pyrenees to Sussex with 40 other cyclists to raise money for the One Mile Closer charity, raising more than £900 from this venture. The charity, which was founded by

the friends and families of Rob Gauntlett and James Atkinson, raises money for the Nalango Secondary School in Uganda, which was built in Rob Gauntlett’s memory. Its inspirational headteacher, Paul Kasadha, began by teaching students from beneath a mango tree, but now has more than 600 pupils and hastransformed many lives. In a visit to Farlington, Paul explained that each class has80 students, the students sit on long benches, that some students walk for miles to get to school and that some students often only have one meal per day and this is provided by the school. The Farlington community has recently raised over £700 for equipment and furniture for the school. Horsham resident John completed the recent Brighton Marathon. He has run the Brighton marathon once before, the first Brighton marathon in 2010. He has also run the London marathon twice and spent the summer of 2011 running from Rome to London, a distance of nearly 1200 miles, completing 45 marathons in 50 days. John said: “I know the money raised will make a real difference to the children’s education in Uganda. I want to thank everyone who has supported me so far and if anyone else would like to contribute, please visit www. justgiving.com/fundraising/johndwyer5.”

The Shipley Community Project has breathed new life into the old grounds of the Shipley football site just south of Horsham on the A272, by creating and developing a range of amazing facilities for the local community. “We believe that age is no barrier to fitness, fun and social interaction,” says Chairman, Philip Gibbs. “We want to welcome people of all ages and abilities to come along and join in the activities which are on offer, including sports, creative woodwork and gardening.” The Shipley Community Project team, in addition to building their own community workshop and petanque pistes, have been renovating their existing fullsize football pitch. They have already created a new mid-size football pitch with lights, which is being used exclusively for the enjoyment of their Walking Football team. A third and much larger junior football pitch is now under construction to meet the growing shortage of facilities in the wider Horsham District. The Walking Football club, essentially derived from veteran’s football, is set up with the purpose of proving that the beautiful game is one to be enjoyed by all ages. It is proving so popular that there is demand to extend the activities to twice a week and invite younger players to join the sessions as well. “We believe that Walking Football is a natural progression for those who are moving on from the physical pressures of the 11-a-side veterans’ game but

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch: Music...Mayhem...Mustard! An all new musical storytelling extravaganza, to celebrate 40 years of Ronda and David Armitage’s The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, will be performed at The Hawth this month. The delightful heartwarming children’s tale has been beautifully adapted and brought to the stage by Pied Piper Theatre Company. For lighthouse keeper, Mr Grinling, lunch is the highlight of the day, but Mr Grinling isn’t the only one who enjoys the delicious food; it seems some greedy seagulls keep stealing it! Can Mrs Grinling come up with an ingenious plan to make sure the lighthouse keeper gets his lunch? Join Mr and Mrs

Grinling and Hamish the cat for an exciting visual delight, inspired by the much loved children’s story. The Pied Piper Theatre Company specialises in new writing for young children and were last seen at the Hawth in December, with their popular adaptation of Burglar Bill. Demelza named as Drusillas Park’s Charity of the Year

Drusillas Park, Alfriston, are proud to be supporting Demelza as their Charity of the Year 2017. Based in the South East of England, Demelza is a children’s hospice charity that provides essential care to families who have children with a life-limiting illness across East Sussex, Kent and South East London. The charity offers expert and compassionate

care for babies, children, young people and their families when they need it the most. At Demelza, families are able to enjoy quality time together in a supportive environment. The invaluable care is free of charge to families and is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Julie Brett, Community Fundraiser at Demelza, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled Drusillas Park chose Demelza to be their charity of the year! It’s a superb partnership for us, as so many children and families visit this fantastic zoo, we’ll really be able to boost awareness of our work in the local community. “We’re just in the process of expanding our services in East Sussex, so this couldn’t have come at a better time for us. We were very impressed at our recent visit to Drusillas and can’t wait to see their new attractions. We’re really keen to work alongside their staff with lots of fun activities throughout the year.” Many events are being planned for the partnership throughout 2017, including a group visit to Drusillas, a ride on the brand new

Safari Express train, as well as a trip around the park’s newest attraction, Go Safari! which opens at the end of May. Demelza will have an ongoing presence at the park, with additional support and fundraising opportunities planned throughout the year. Drusillas’ beautiful serval, Ninja, will also be helping raise funds for the charity. Every time Ninja is adopted, 20% of all the proceeds will be donated to Demelza. Managing Director, Christine Smith, explained why the zoo is thrilled to be working with Demelza in 2017: “As Drusillas Park is enjoyed by so many young families, it is very important to us to support a charity that provides such amazing care for children. We are very proud to be partnering with Demelza and look forward to working closely with them over the course of the year.” Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am. For more information, please telephone: 01323 874100 or visit: www.drusillas.co.uk. For more information on Demelza, please visit: https://www.demelza. org.uk/

Drama students hope for world premier Pupils with Helen

Box Office 01403 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Drama students hoping to perform a world premier got an insight into two styles of production. Christ’s Hospital Year seven, eight and nine pupils attended Curious Theatre’s excellent production of ‘Stan v Bert’ exploring the techniques of famous theatre practitioners Constantin Stanislavski and Berthold Brecht. Year nine pupils also benefited from a two hour workshop run by Helen Blizard after the performance of ‘Stan v Bert’ exploring the theories of Brecht in greater depth to prepare pupils for devising work at GCSE and beyond. Helen is also passionate about

teaching and recently joined the school’s drama department. She has already written a play specifically for the school pupils ‘Only Human’. The pupils had a first ‘reading’ before the end of term and hope to perform what would be the premier of Helen’s play next academic year. Helen has impressive experience as a writer for theatre in the West End and film and has been asked to develop her own high concept TV drama series by Red Planet Production Company, the makers of ‘Ashes to Ashes’ and ‘Life on Mars’. The hour long performance of Stan v Bert presented the ideas

of both approaches in a practical way, ending the performance with an audience vote, with the Christ’s Hospital audience choosing a ‘Brechtian’ approach rather than the more traditional naturalistic style of Stanislavski’s ‘system.’ The school said that actors Terry Morrison and Richard Attlee performed with energy and technical skill. They offered a question and answer session after the performance where drama pupils were able to find out more about the approaches of the performers as well as their understanding of both ‘Stan’ and ‘Bert.’

More disappointment as Palmer retires on first lap Jolyon Palmer in his short run Russian GP

Formula 1 Dave Snith - Sports Editor Jolyon Palmer’s Renault Sport Formula One Team secured its second points scoring finish of

2017 with a eighth place from Palmer’s teammate Nico Hülkenberg in the Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi Autodrom. However, the race proved another disappointment for Palmer

Junior Football Round Up The Horsham District Youth league Mini Soccer Finals were held at Ashington Cougars FC last weekend. The format consisted of a group stage, with the winners & runners up progressing to a knock out cup and the 3rd and 4th placed going into the plate trophy. Each match involved two games so that the whole squad could feature in competitive matches. In the U9 age group 30 teams started out and the knock out

final was contested between Ashington Cougars and Hassocks Hawks which was won by Hawks after a closely fought contest. In the plate competition another tight game between Billingshurst FC and Faygate Falcons finished with a Faygate victory. 32 teams contested the U10 cup competition. In the plate trophy competition East Grinstead Meads AC narrowly beat Dorking wanderers 3-1 over the two games. In the knock out cup Craw-

who was hit on the second bend by Romain Grosjean forcing a very early retirement. Palmer started from 16th on the grid before his race was brought to an end on the first lap with the Southwater driver still looking to secure his first F1 Championship point. Hülkenberg’s top ten finish was achieved from eighth spot on the grid. Palmer commented; “I had a decent-enough start then heading down to Turn Two there was a Sauber on my outside then Romain made a very ambitious move over the kerbs on the inside from behind. There was no space for me to go because of the Sauber, so maybe Romain wasn’t aware of that, but he kept it in, hit me, then we were both out of the race. That was a shame for both of us really. I feel for my crew this weekend as they’ve worked so hard on the car, then we had such a short race. Now it’s reset, reload and look to Barcelona.” ley United Blue took on Crawley Down Gatwick in a local derby that after three games Crawley United just edged to win the cup for the first time. Marc Oratis, HDYFL mini soccer Co ordinator, stated afterwards: “It was a fantastic advert for youth football, the standard was excellent and all participants can hold their heads up high, well done to all the boys that took part” Last weekend also saw Chesworth Rovers U13 crowned Horsham A league Champions and Billinghurst beat Crawley United 1 - 0 to win the U13 John Laker Cup.

Slinfold Ladies defy bad weather at Spring Meeting Golf

It may have been the Spring Meeting, but evidence of the season was lacking with wind and hailstones putting in an unwanted appearance. Nevertheless, 49 Slinfold lady golfers battled with the elements and managed to return some good scores. Lady Captain, Sue Scaife commented: “It was great to see so many ladies turn out for the Spring Meeting. It is one of the major trophies that the ladies compete for in the year and it was pleasing to see a number of them rewarded with some very good scores. It was also a good opportunity for me to give a plug for my chosen charity for the year, The Easter Team. I am pleased to say that even though we are only one-third of the way through the year we have already raised over £500.” Sue Scaife presented

the Spring Crystal Bowl to winner Jenny Wise, who also managed to secure a nice handicap cut. In second place was Lynda Robins, in third Evelyn Rock, followed by Jo Wright in fourth and Chris Hagg in fifth. Nearest the Pin prizes were awarded to Jan Jones and Sue Scaife for the 7th and 16th holes respectively. Jo Wright picked up the nearest the pin in two on the 13th hole, Lynette Tisshaw won the prize for the best cumulative par 3 score across all four par 3 holes, and Mary Benson took the prize for the best score of all the 36 handicappers. The Nip & Tuck Trophy is also included in the Spring Meeting and goes to the competitor with the fewest number of putts over 18 holes. This year Danielle Jones won the Trophy with an impressive 29 putts in total.

YM thrashed as Town claim title in style SCFL Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 – 7 Haywards Heath Town Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor A big bank holiday weekend crowd of just fewer than 400 turned out at Gorings Mead for the final league match of the season; with the travelling support hoping to see their team claim the league title. And claim it they did by putting YM to the sword and in the process showed why they are very worthy champions. Heath came straight out of the blocks and dominated from the start getting their reward of the opening goal with 13 minutes played after YM ‘keeper Mark Fox had saved Melford Simpson’s header the ball ran to Joel Daly who shot Heath into the lead. After Phil Johnson had forced a good save out of visiting ‘keeper Josh James Heath doubled their lead, with Daly again the scorer. It was all Heath and 2 minutes before the break the match was over as a contest when Kane Louis fired past Fox for 3-0. The visitors started the sec-

New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site

ond half as they left off the first; Nathan Cooper hitting the post and Fox saving well from Callum Saunders. Then totally against the run of play Phil Johnson rose highest from a corner to pull a goal back for YM. The goal spurred on Heath far more than it did YM and the chances and attempts all came in the home penalty area. With 76 minutes played substitute Jamie Weston made it four when he hit a fierce drive into the bottom corner. YM had looked on their summer break from the kick off but now 4-1 down they totally gave up the cause and Heath pilled forward. The fifth came on 80 minutes with a good turn and shot from Trevor McCreadie followed minutes later by the sixth scored this time by George Hayward. Just on the final whistle the rout was completed when after Fox had palmed out a shot Melford Simpson smashed the ball back into the net from close range. Manager Peter Buckland will be disappointed with his teams’ final day capitulation but probably not surprised given Heath’s incentive of the title against YM’s nothing to play for mid table place.

Heath progress further Joggers buoyed by marathon run with highest ever finish Joggers at the Mid Sussex 10k

SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne Town 2 - 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath completed their seasons fixtures with a narrow defeat at Eastbourne Town but despite the result Steve Painter’s side ended the campaign in 8th place, their highest ever finish and with the Reserves winning their league it’s been a very good year for the Bears. A fairly even start to the game saw the hosts Jason Taylor go close with a right foot shot from 25 yards that went across the face of goal and just past the left upright while for Heath Jahobi Maher had a shot from distance that went high over the bar. Former Horsham striker Evan Archibald broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when he received the ball wide on the left and ran through to lob Michael Chester from the edge of the penalty area. Heath replied almost immediately when Stuart Chester got on the end of a Kyle Sim long throw but his right foot flick was deflected wide of the post. The hosts ended the half well with Chris Cumming-Bart shooting just over the crossbar and in the final minutes Dave Smart got on the end of a long free kick to power a header

straight at Chester on the post. Ethan Strevett should have added a second for his team minutes into the restart but screwed his shot badly and it sailed well wide of target. Shaun Findlay forced Eastbourne keeper Greg Nessling into his first real save of the match when he rifled Jamal Sultans right wing cross goal-wards only to be denied by Nessling on the goal line but the Heath supporters didn’t have to wait too long for the equaliser when Scott Weller tried his luck with a wonder strike from fully 35 yards that crashed against the inside of Nessling’s right hand post into the net, a “goal of the season” strike by the Heath midfield player. Minutes later Archibald had a great chance to restore his teams lead when he had a free header which he somehow steered wide of Chester’s right hand post but Smart made up for that in the 71st minute when he headed home a left corner at the near post to give his team the victory. After the game Painter said “We had a really young side out today, it’s funny when you think of Stuart Chester being the old man in the back four when he’s only 21 himself but we had two 17 year olds and a 20 year old alongside him and they were up against some very experienced senior players, I feel really proud with the way they all performed”.

Pulborough start season on south coast Pulborough Bowls Club

Roger Lusted and Club Captain Barry Gilbert Bowls The recent Billingshurst Open Day went very well with around 40 members, guests and visitors in attendance. The Guest of Honour Roger Lusted opened the new season by bowling the first bowl with one of his grandfather Frederick Lusted’s original lignum vitae bowls; Roger’s grandfather was a founder member of Billingshurst Bowls Club in 1932. Billingshurst 43 – 102 The Downsman.

Disaster struck Billingshurst in their opening game of the season away to The Downsman at Crawley. The visitors went in for tea 19 shots in arrears, never looked like recovering on resumption, and lost overall by a rather large margin failing to win on any rink. Bill Spence, Anita Colliety & Geoff Weller lost 6 - 38 Ray Sutton, Barry Gilbert & Betty Weller lost 11 - 27 Roger Moore, Marion Clark & Alan Knight lost 13 - 20 Hazel Sandford, Ray Neil & Alan Readshaw lost 13 – 17

Bowls The first week of competitive bowls for Pulborough Bowls Club took them away to the coast for their first 3 games. Weds 26th saw players dust off their whites and try to perfect their bowling stance enough to put on a show against a tough team at Beech House Park in Worthing. 3 triples played 18 ends of quality bowls, with

Worthing just getting the better of Pulborough 64/43. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Melvin Green, with Mick Ayling as lead and Alan Jordan as number 2, 19 shots to 14. The following day, Pulborough returned to Worthing, this time against Marine Gardens. The chilly conditions meant far too many layers of clothing to bowl comfortably, but Pulborough pulled out all the

stops to erase the previous days result. Skip, Melvin Green, with Mick Ayling and Malcolm Gray, looked to be heading for a heavy defeat, until a 7 on end 16 reversed their fortunes and gave them momentum to finish 19/17 ahead! John Brown and team struggled to make their break until end 12, when a 5 edged them ahead enough to pull away and finish 19/12. Top rink went to Alan Jordan, Kath Ayling and Jane Gray, who kept their opponents on 0 for the first 7 ends, only allowing them to win 6 ends overall to finish 22/8 to Pulborough. The final score was 60/37 to Pulborough. The third and final game of the week was played on a very gusty green at Bognor against Hotham BC. Just being able to stand against the wind at the start of the game was a challenge, followed by rain at halfway, but the will to see the full 18 ends to their conclusion. The difference at halfway was just 1 shot, with Pulborough fighting for every point to finish with just 3 shots in hand 48/45. Top rink went to Melvin Green for the second time in 5 days, supported by Adey Stratton as number 2 and Jane Gray as lead 19/9.

Horsham sail through to cup second round

Horsham’s Craig Gallagher hit a quick 46 Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup – Round 1 Brighton & Hove 148-8 (20 0vers) Horsham 152-1 (15.3 overs) Horsham won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Hosts Brighton & Hove won the toss, elected to bat and posted a promising 47 run opening stand. But, once Sussex’s dangerous

Phillip Salt was out, for 17, only Liam Smith with 75 looked likely to get his side to a large enough total, Horsham going on to win at a canter. Brighton wickets fell too regularly for their liking and from 111-6 they could only set a moderate 149 run target, well within cup holders Horsham’s capability. Mika Ekstrom, Horsham’s 19 year old overseas signing from South Africa, took 1-36, John Aston 2-25,

Jonny Whiting, David Croshaw and Michael Munday ending with one apiece, two run outs adding to Brighton’s misery. Horsham responded with a 109 run opening stand, evergreen Craig Gallagher making 46 off just 25 balls on the way to a confident win with four and a half overs unused and wicket keeper Ryan Maskell on 78 not out, including 7 fours and 5 sixes. Maskell joined Horsham from Bognor during the winter and scored a century in his first match for the club in last Saturday’s friendly against Worthing. Horsham’s new Captain, Michael Thornely, told us: “We dropped Salt but got away with it! Ryan hit an early six, which set the tone of our run chase and we won quite comfortably, really. He looks like an excellent replacement for Joe Ludlow (returned to Cuckfield). We’ll now be concentrating on the league – we’ve got a potentially tricky opening sequence of games and will need to be at our best.” On Sunday, June 11, Horsham travel to Burgess Hill in round 2. Tomorrow (Saturday 6) Horsham begin their Sussex Premier League campaign with a visit to Preston Nomads, following which they have a home game against strongly tipped Cuckfield before a trip to Hastings. Then, after Middleton at home Horsham go to Roffey - always a strongly contested fixture. The opening matches of the league season will be on the new 50 format.

Horsham’s Georgia Adams thrilled with Sussex captaincy New Sussex Captain Georgia Adams

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Former Horsham Captain Georgia Adams has been appointed SussexWomen’s Captain for 2017 – in both the Royal London One-Day Cup and the NatWest T20 compe-

tition. In what will be a busy World Cup season, Georgia picks up the reins from Georgia Elwiss, who is expected to be on international duty. 23 year old Georgia Adams has an impeccable pedigree, following in her father Chris’s footsteps – Chris

was county Captain at a particularly successful time for Sussex. Georgia has already captained Sussex when previous skippers have been called up for England, notably scoring a maiden century for the county when skippering her first game. She has been in the England Academy squad and has coached some of Sussex’s emerging players, too, so she knows her charges well, saying: “I am honoured, privileged and proud to be given the opportunity to captain Sussex. With an exciting season ahead, we have a great chance to showcase our young, talented side. We have most certainly put in the hard yards this winter as a squad under the guidance of our new coach James Anyon and I believe we have every chance of lifting some silverware this season.” Retired Sussex bowler Anyon echoes Georgia Adams’ optimism, adding: “I am looking forward to seeing the girls get the season underway and showing what the side is capable of.” On Sunday July 2 Sussex Women will play a NatWest T20 game against Kent at Billingshurst Cricket Club.

Roffey cruise through in Sussex Cup Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup – Round 1 Ansty 86-8 (20 0vers) Roffey 90-1 (13.2 overs) Roffey won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Deaks Lane, Roffey won the toss and dominated the game from start to finish after inserting their Ansty hosts. Rohit Jagota struck with the third ball of the match, Premier League newcomers Ansty soon finding themselves 3-2. Wickets fell regularly and although there was a late flurry from Jake Wilson and skipper Jack Palser there was no real answer to tight bowling and fielding, Theo Rivers pouching a fine running catch and preventing fours, Jagota engineering a slick run out and Leigh Harrison taking two smart catches in the course of one over. Stuart Whittingham, fresh from Sussex duty at Trent Bridge was a handful with 2-15, Jagota and George Fleming also taking two wickets apiece and Harrison one, while Alex Collins was the most economical bowler, but without reward. A target of 87 was never likely to be nearly enough unless Ansty

could put Roffey under pressure with a clutch of early wickets. Roffey, though, had put on 60 when Ansty made their sole breakthrough – in the tenth over - Usman Khan’s 31 paving the way for a clinical Roffey win. Fellow opener, Matt Davies, finished unbeaten on 27 and Jagota on 25, victory coming with 40 balls to spare, two sixes from Jagota seeing Roffey home at 3.20pm. Roffey Captain Matt Davies told the District Post: “No disrespect to Ansty, but we came here for a convincing win and that’s what we got! We executed what we needed to do – be efficient in the field and with the bat.” In Round 2 on Sunday June 11 Roffey face a sterner challenge at Fulking against Preston Nomads, who overwhelmed Portslade. Meanwhile, tomorrow (Saturday 6) reigning champions Roffey entertain Brighton & Hove in the first round of matches in the Sussex Premier League. In the opening week of the season the visitors were eliminated from both the National knockout cup and the Sussex cup, suffering heavy defeats. This season, for the first time, Premier League matches at the beginning and end of the campaign are on a 50 over win basis.

Gold for Atlantis’ Beth and Amelia Swimming Senior swimmers from Atlantis represented their club at the South East Regional Championships and after months of very hard training the rewards came thick and fast for the swimmers. Beth Britton led the way with a fabulous 50 Free 26.60 swim to win Gold, closely followed by Amelia Wright who also won Gold in the Girls 200 Breast stroke with a storming 2.43 PB. Silver Medals were also on the cards for Lily Davis in the 50 Breast and Britton again in the 100 Free. With two Golds and Silvers, two bronzes were added to the collection by Lily Davis and

Amelia Wright in the 100 Breaststroke. Head Coach Andy Lobley was jubilant at the end of a long three days competition saying, “I cannot express my satisfaction at our swims this weekend, we have already mentioned our medal winners but for the rest of my team, Zoe Cawsey and Freya Fulcher making finals and Aiden Sparling and Toby Van der Hut putting in really solid performances this was by far our best Championships to date. I am now really looking forward to seeing how our younger swimmers perform towards the end of the month at the Age Group South East Championships”.
