Morwen celebrates, Tories dominate, UKIP vanishes phil dennett News Editor
Delighted Morwen Millson is heading towards a 30th anniversary of service for Horsham as the newly-elected West Sussex County Council meets for the first time on May 16. The district and the county is an indelible deeper shade of Tory blue after the Conservatives tightened their stranglehold at County Hall, Chichester. But Morwen won her seat in Horsham Riverside for the Liberal Democrats to head into her 28th year as a county councillor for Horsham. First elected in 1989, she was one of only two Liberal Democrats across the district to win a seat; the other ten within Horsham district went to Conservatives. Morwen told the District Post: “I am delighted to have been reelected as councillor for the new Riverside Division. I look forward to completing 30 years of service to the residents of Riverside. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me, and the many people who helped with my campaign. I will work hard for all residents and will do my best to ensure their voices are heard at County Hall.”
The Conservatives, with 56 seats, now hold an increased and overwhelming overall majority of 42 on the county council after last Thursday’s voting. The Liberal Democrats returned to being the main opposition party as UKIP lost all of its 10 seats. The new constitution of the 70-member council is Conservatives 56 seats, Liberal Democrats 9 seats and Labour 5 seats. Before the elections the Conservatives had 43 seats, UKIP 10, Liberal Democrats 7, Labour 6, Independent 3, with 2 vacant seats. The size of the County Council has decreased from 71 to 70 seats because of changes approved by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. Morwen said of the Liberal Democrat improvement: ““Last week’s results show a significant improvement in support for the Liberal Democrats across the District. Our share of the vote has risen, and we are now first or second in every seat. Support for UKIP has virtually disappeared, whilst Labour have shown again that they can’t win seats in Horsham District. The Liberal Democrats are the only alternative to the Conservatives here, under a ‘first past the post’ electoral system. We are once again the main opposition party, as we were for many years before the rise of UKIP four years ago.”

Children from St Peters School at Cowfold beat the Tokyo Olympics to the punch for recycling. They took part in a world first for recycling during the regional finals of the ESFA Danone Nations Cup at Sporting Thamesmead when they recycled their water bottles on the spot to turn them into medals. By taking part in this initiative, St Peters beat the Tokyo Olympics to the punch, as the Games’ committee announced last month that their 2020 medals will be made from old mobile phones. The recycling activity is being launched at the English leg of the world’s biggest football tournament for 10-12 year-olds, the Danone Nations Cup. The recycling process consisted of recycling water bottles, crushing them and heating the small pieces of plastic to create a viscous, formable mass. A tailormade mould was then used to form the medals that were given to the children for taking part. Marie Wendling, PR and events manager at Danone, said: “Not only did we celebrate the best footballing talent from the South East, but St Peters Cowfold
School also took part in a world first for recycling. We hope this will inspire the children, teach them about the importance of recycling, and help bring about a change in behaviour when they next throw away their plastic bottles.” 2.5million children worldwide take part in the competition each year, with 3,000 schools competing in the English leg run by the English Schools’ Football Association. The ESFA Danone Nations Cup is a unique FIFA-approved tournament, which has been given the Government’s ‘Inspired by 2012’ seal of approval. It is an annual highlight in Danone’s ongoing programme of support for healthy lifestyles through education, fun, and fair play, which includes its ‘Eat Like A Champ’ healthy eating initiative. The ESFA Danone Nations Cup is the world’s biggest international football tournament for 10 to 12-year olds. From England to Indonesia, China to Mexico, 32 countries participate each year in making the dreams of some 2.5 million boys and girls come true through a unique and unforgettable experience.

Young innovators win national award Winners
Children from a Horsham school were judged top innovators in a national competition. The youngsters from years four to six at St Mary’s School took the Primary School winners award in the final of PA Consulting Group’s annual coding competition. Nine teams of finalists presented their inventions to an expert judging panel including Emma Payne, head of IT delivery at John Lewis and Rory Cellan-Jones, the BBC technology correspondent. The competition challenged participants to use a Raspberry Pi to produce innovations that could improve the lives of people who have conditions that limit their ability to do things the rest of us
take for granted. The St Mary’s team devised what judges described as an ingenious door entry system, paired with a wearable device that helps deaf and blind people identify visitors to their residence. Their project demonstrates how communication is performed by the sense of touch using “wearables.” Judges said the team won because it got to grips with the project and had great communication skills which made it so simple for the judges to understand. The team had learnt coding skills such as python and used a lot of sensors in its project which impressed the judges. Members showed creativity and team spirit and even show-
cased new ideas of how they can develop their project even further. The judges were Rob Elsey, Executive Director for Technology and CIO at the Bank of England, Emma Payne, Head of IT Delivery at John Lewis, Adam Jezard, Commissioning Editor at Financial Times Special Reports, Rory Cellan-Jones, Technology Correspondent for the BBC,Sarah Wilkinson, Chief Digital, Data and Technology Officer at the Home Office, Olly Stephens, Lead Architect of the Technology Services Group ARM and Tom Hartley, a student at Imperial College London and an ex-PA Raspberry Pi winner. Pupils make sweet music to judges
Waiting list to join scouts Scouts on parade
Sweet music
Pupils at The Towers Convent School have helped staff win a national award for music making. The school at Upper Beeding has been awarded a gold certificate by the Incorporated Society of Musicians. This award puts the school in the top 76 schools in England for its achievement in music. Headmistress Clare Trelfa said: “We are very proud of our talented pupils and the excellent standard of music within the school. Our music teacher, Mrs Gray, inspires all pupils to excel and achieve the very best results year on year.” Deborah Annetts, Chief Executive of the IS, the professional body for musicians, congratu-
lated the school, and said: “We are delighted to recognise The Towers’ achievement in music and celebrate the commitment to music education shown by the school in their high uptake and high achievement of pupils. “Music is a valuable subject; it brings value in itself to pupils as well as supporting achievement in other subjects. Music also opens doors and generates educational opportunities for pupils from all backgrounds. We are delighted that The Towers values music within their school curriculum and as the professional body for musicians and a subject association for music education, we are delighted to recognise this high level of achievement with this certificate.”
A boom in scout membership means youngsters in Horsham are having to wait to join. The local scouts report a record number of 420 volunteers but waiting lists are at an all-time high as more youngsters seek real action instead of computer games. Scouts in Horsham reported the highest number of adult volunteers on record in the latest annual membership figures, not more are needed to cope with demand. Scouting now has more volunteers than at any point in its history. With the nature of volunteering in the UK changing and more adults offering their time flexibly, more people are needed to run scouting than ever before. This includes youth workers, as well as charity trustees and skills instructors. This year is the first time that The Scout Association has fully

incorporated trustees into its total number of volunteers. Despite such high numbers of volunteers, the waiting list for young people who want to join scouts in Horsham continues to increase and is the highest figure in Scouting’s history. The desire to join scouts continues to grow among young people but more adult volunteers are needed to make this a reality. The most popular section in Horsham Scouting is Cub Scouts (8–10 years) with 454 members increasing by 7% in the last 12 months. The greatest demand for adults however is for the Beaver Scout section (6 – 8 years). There are waiting lists to join and only with more adult volunteers will those children be able to start on their adventure of Scouting. In total, there are now nearly
1500 young people involved in Scouting in Horsham. The trend of growth has continued including adult volunteers and since 2003 total membership has increased by 31% at 1910. Scouting continues to be the largest co-educational youth movement in the UK with twelve consecutive years of growth in its youth membership. Peter Scofield Local Scouting Manager, said: “In Horsham Scouts we understand the demands placed on adults today. Balancing home, work and leisure time is challenge for everyone. We understand that giving time to volunteer can be difficult but we know working with young people is rewarding and great fun. We know that adults today need more flexibility in the use their time so they can fit volunteering around their busy lives. Most adults who sign up with Scouts have limited time to donate to us, which means we need more volunteers as a whole in order to meet the growing demand for scouting among young people.” “I’m therefore calling on adults who want to make a difference to the lives of young people across the Horsham area to give scouting a go. We know that not having enough time is the main barrier to volunteering among adults, which is why we are striving to make it easier by offering flexibility in a range of roles from scout group leaders to administrative and trustee positions.”

Big show curtain-raiser draws 14,000 Alf up for super challenge Enjoying the show
More than 14,000 thousand visitors enjoyed the Spring Garden and Leisure Show, as the 2017 show season got underway at the South of England Showground. It proved a lively and colourful appetiser for the biggest show of the year, the South of England Show on June 8-10. A wide range of new outdoor pursuits and interactive entertainment proved a great success with families visiting the show, whilst green fingered enthusiasts enjoyed top gardening
tips and some fantastic retail therapy. New this year was the UK’s first interactive mobile caving system, the only one of its kind in the country and probably the most realistic artificial caving experience there is above ground. Bank holiday family fun was spread across the weekend with the opportunity to reconnect with the outdoors and take part in adventure pursuits, including, tent pitching, a mobile shooting range, rope workshop, model
aircraft demonstrations, craftwork and a campfire experience. Gardening guru Jean Griffin of BBC Sussex, Surrey and Kent returned for the weekend, chairing another exciting programme of question and answer sessions with a panel of gardening experts in the popular Gardening Theatre. Entries for the floral display competition in both the Beginners and Intermediate/Advanced classes were exhibited and visitors were treated to an inspiring plant and nursery area with thousands of plants to choose from and an extensive range of gardening equipment to buy. There was colouring fun with a new giant colouring cube specially created by artist Scott Walker, a fabulous circus skills workshop with queues out the door to try their hand at juggling, ball walking and unicycling. There was also the opportunity to try blacksmithing; and a caravan manoeuvring course run by The Caravan and Motorhome Club. Visitors received a warm welcome from entertaining stiltwalking characters Jerry the Gerbera, Bob the Butterfly and the Praying Mantas. The muchloved ‘Mini Sheep Show’ also entertained the crowds as well as a Scout marching band.
Lanzarote training
At the age of 61 Alf Crossman, from Rudgwick, has decided to take part in a 139 mile ‘super challenge’ in aid of The Veterans Charity. He will be tackling The Forces March 2017, one of the UK’s toughest challenge events which was created to unite civilians with personnel from the military and emergency services to raise vital funds for the care and support of UK armed forces heroes and forces families. The Forces March retraces the route taken by men of the newly formed 6th Airborne Division on a now legendary training march
from Devon to Wiltshire in 1942. Walking, Alf will cover an average of 27.8 miles a day on five consecutive days starting from the seafront Ilfracombe, North Devon on Wednesday 24th May progress through Exford, Crowcombe, Somerton and Maiden Bradley finishing in Bulford, Wiltshire on May 28. Entry details and additional information can be found at www.forcesmarch.org.uk Alf served as a gunner in the Royal Navy in the late-1970d and early 1980s. Alf said: “As an ex-member of the armed forces and a volunteer, I’ve seen firsthand the hardships that many ex-servicemen and women face. The age-range of the people I deal with spans the 20s right up to those in their 80s. The great thing about The Veterans Charity is the speed at which they provide help to people in need. What they do is really important and that’s why I decided to take part in the March. I know it’s going to be a tough five days, but I’m going to do my best. It’s not a race and I want to make sure that I earn the sponsorship I’ve raised.” Anyone who wishes to sponsor Alf can do so at https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/AlfCrossman3 or by text message, simply text: ARGO56 and the amount you wish to donate to 70070.

Dark tale shines at Rock Challenge final Arrests for Youngsters from a Horsham school shone as they won five awards before more than 1400 people and judges at a final. The group from Millais School competed in the Rock Challenge Southern final at Portsmouth
It was an absolutely incredible evening, showcasing the best of young peoples’ talents and skills Guildhall against teams from Hampshire, West Sussex and Hertfordshire. The school picked up individual awards from the quality of its video, lighting, soundtrack and drama, as well as being the top choice of all the performers. The cast’s dance was a dark take on a classical fairy-tale. Snow White, the beautiful princess, was pulled into a life of vanity, temptation and greed. The cast told the story of heartwarming and fearless friends travelling together on a twisted journey facing the powers of both good and evil. Although Millais did not feature in the overall prize winners their performance impressed the
judges. Be Your Best Foundation Director, Glyn Wright, the first place prize presenter: said: “It was an absolutely incredible evening, showcasing the best of young peoples’ talents and skills. The parents and teachers must be so proud, the children have been amazing. Every school has shone tonight.” The winner, with automatic qualification to the 2018 JRock final, was Calmore Junior School in Southhampton, with the wartime tale of Ann Frank. From West Sussex County Council, Jo Millward, second place prize presenter said: “I am really proud that West Sussex County Council, can sponsor such a brilliant event, and really proud of everything the young people have achieved.” The sponsors were Ansvar Insurance, Association of Chief Police Officers Criminal Records Office, Razzamataz, Zeamu Music, Ian Wright Consulting, West Sussex County Council – Think Family, CEOP, YPO, Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team. Scenes from the award-winning Millais performance are pictured by Nick Scott Photography.

St John Stanley, Watch Manager for Horley Fire Station, who is also the parent of one of the cadets, said: “This is the first time we have invited cadets onto the unit, I was really impressed with the interest and discipline the cadets demonstrated throughout the day. It’s great to see how the skills and qualities these cadets are learning are similar to the Fire Service.” Cadet Sergeant Harry StanleyJones said: “This was a good experience and gave me an insight into a potential career. It also allowed me to use my leaderships skills that I have learned with the Air Cadets.”
Education Visits are one of many activities offered by Horsham Air Cadets, they also have the chance to do many activities including visits to RAF Stations, Adventure Training and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Horsham Air Cadets group is recruiting, if you are interested in joining and are aged between 13 and 18, you can contact the group on 1015@aircadets.org.uk. The group also welcomes applications for adult volunteers, who can use the same address. Hewitt, the co-chairs of the Governing Body have expressed their support and thanks to Jon Gilbert and the team for their work in achieving this result: “We are very proud to be part of this process. In the short length of time Jon Gilbert has been Headteacher, he and his new team of Teachers, Teaching Assistants and office staff have been able to bring this beautiful village school set in the South Downs National Park to the judgement by Ofsted as ‘Good’. We look forward to helping the team continue to shape the learning environment with its wide range of facilities and clubs for an exciting future.” The School has recently received a substantial sum of money from a Legacy bequeathed from a local resident. The full report, along with more information about Coldwaltham C.E. Primary School and its facilities, is available on the school website at www.st-jamescoldwaltham.w-sussex.

The group from Horsham Air Cadets found itself high on a practice tower and then abseiling after being invited to the home of the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s Technical Rescue Unit. The unit has been sent to several humanitarian efforts and scenes of natural disasters including Nepal, Haiti, Indonesia and New Zealand. The cadets started the day with a tour at the Horley centre, followed by a confined space course. They crawled in pitch black darkness through various obstacles to prepare them for operations. After some rescue abseiling, the cadets rounded off the day by
Governors have praised a new head teacher for improving the fortunes of a school that was told “could do better”. Ofsted inspectors gave Coldwaltham Church of England Primary School a welcome “good” rating after a visit in March. This came only two years after a report in 2015 which had indicated that there was room for improvement. At that time, the then new head teacher, Jon Gilbert, was settling in to his role as Executive Head at both Coldwaltham and Amberley Schools. Since the 2015 inspection, the team of staff and governors have worked hard to address the required areas for improvement. The School is very pleased to have now been judged as “Good” in its overall effectiveness, with the quality of teaching, the personal development of pupils, the achievements of pupils and the school leadership now all being judged to be “Good”. Fantastique as Horsham music wins French fans Saturday gig
Young musicians from Horsham took their music across the Channel for their first performance outside the UK. Horsham-based community record label, United Records, took a group of young people they are working with to perform in Douai, just outside Lille in northern
France. A group of thirteen people made the trip. As soon as the team arrived in France they had the chance to speak to a group of local young people about channelling their creativity and energies into positive things. The local youth workers told the team that many of the
young people were from troubled backgrounds. The team performed for a joint Saturday night event between local youth groups. This performance contained all original songs from the artists, and organisers said it was great to see the songs which the young people had written in Horsham being played in France and being very well received. The United Records label is a Horsham based collective of youth workers and musicians who work alongside local young people to give them the opportunity to write and record their own music. Having already digitally released one album via their YouTube channel last summer, they are now focussing on providing performance opportunities for the young people they are working with. If you’re interested in keeping up to date with everything that is going on with the United Records Team you can follow their weekly video blog on YouTube: www. youtube.com/BeTheMove

Farlington school enjoy a busy few weeks Farlington school at Horsham has been busy in recent weeks with a series of events. Here we present pictures of several of those that have taken place. Geography students from Year 9 took a field trip to Brighton beach and Ditchling Beacon in the South Downs National Park to carry out an investigation on ‘Tourism’. Students explored the contrasting appeal of the two locations and considered whether visitors are managed sustainably. Year 11 and Sixth Form students have completed a 10-week climbing course at the K2 High Sports Centre in Crawley. The school said the girls thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to widen their experience of different sports and acquire some new skills. Melissa Adam, who coached
the girls, said, “I enjoyed teaching the Farlington girls, the group was full of character and had great fun.” Children from nursery and reception classes have been enjoying their Forest School sessions in the spring sunshine. These classes were recently praised in the Independent Schools Inspectorate report where it commented that Early Years Foundation Stage “children develop good skills in all areas, and excellent speaking and listening, creative and imaginative development. These skills are nurtured, in particular, through outdoor learning, which enables children to take risks and have adventures whilst learning to keep themselves safe in a secure environment.”

Create your Mediaeval Flag to be displayed at The Loxwood Joust
News Heather Joy - Joy Stars Each year the Loxwood Joust invites schools, youth clubs and scouting groups to design their flag to be hung in their Field of Flags. From the first moment you walk through the gates and see the sign – ‘You are now entering the 15th Century. Laws of the year 1455 now apply,’ you are
transported back in time and you move forward along an avenue of flags. Every flag is designed in a mediaeval style design based on heraldry. The designs and symbols used often reflect the child’s name or environment, be that a school, group or the local area, or they have just been creative for fun! A ‘thanks’ is then given to each school or group in the Joust’s festival programme and a
sign is placed in the Field of Flags with both the children’s names along with the school’s or club’s name. Maurice Bacon, the Joust’s organiser said “Each year the children make some amazing flags and we love seeing these pennants really setting the scene for the mediaeval fun ahead. We know from the feedback we get that the children love making them and are so proud to see their creations flying at such a great event. ” The Loxwood Joust supplies the fabric material that the design is created on and also provides some suggestions and information on heraldry. Each flag will then be hung in the Field of Flags at the entrance to the Loxwood Joust mediaeval festival at The Loxwood Meadow for the duration of the festival. The Loxwood Joust dates this year are 5th, 6th, 13th and 14th August 2017 If you would like your school or group to participate in this year’s Field of Flags, or would like some more information on the Flags, please contact Maurice Bacon on maurice@loxwoodjoust.co.uk.

Hugh Lowson, Chief Executive of Chestnut Tree House said: “The site on which the hospice is built was donated by our former President, Lady Sarah Clutton, who sadly passed away in June 2015. It is truly an honour that her husband, Nigel Clutton, continues to support the work that we do, and we are always delighted to welcome him to the House. “Since we opened in 2003, the number of children we care for has increased from 30 to over 300, and during this time the children we are caring for have become more complex. We are only able to reach more families and increase our services thanks to the support and generosity of the local community. “I would like to thank Nigel for his ongoing support and for

Guests attended a private event at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice to open an apple orchard, named ‘Sarah’s Orchard’ in memory of the charity’s former President Lady Sarah Clutton, who gave land for the hospice to be built. Chief ExecutiveHugh Lowson, and Linda Perry, Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House, welcomed guests to the orchard, and invited Nigel to cut the ribbon, before hosting a cream tea in the House. Horsham’s Candy Box A very sweet experience
Howard Bayliss Business Martin Read Horsham’s Candy Box, the iconic newsagent, confectioner and tobacconists in the Carfax adjacent to the bandstand has been in business for 97 years and is as well patronised as ever. It is a proper shop, bijou and welcoming – a few steps delivering customers into the comfortable, reassuring world of ice creams, sweets, papers, magazines, soft drinks, takeaway sandwiches and rich smelling, loose pipe tobacco kept in jars on a shelf. Proprietor Howard Bayliss told the District Post: “We’ve got a fantastic location, right in the heart of the town, it’s such a lively place to be. We offer friendly, old fashioned service with a good range of products, we aim to do a bit of everything, and love being on first name terms with our many faithful regulars. And, because of our location, we get plenty of new visitors calling in, too, especially in the summer. It’s the people that make the
shop so enjoyable!” The Candy Box is one of Horsham’s very best known shops, arguably the last traditional tobacconists in town (it also sells vaping materi-

The shop has discovered what customers appreciate and how they wish to be served! by. Howard, born and bred in Horsham, previously had a varied career, but after taking over the Candy Box four years ago, is now in his working heaven, saying: “It was great when the space became available outside the shop, allowing us to start providing drinks and ice creams – its lovely to see people enjoying an al fresco break in the sunshine. It’s an especially vibrant spot when the market comes on Thursdays and Saturdays and I’m very pleased for the town that Piries Place will be refurbished, that will inject even more life into Horsham’s town centre!” The Candy Box starts early – Howard is in situ by 6.45am to sort out the newspapers – and is open six full days a week, and on Sundays and Bank Holidays when special events are on in the Carfax. Long may Horsham’s very special Candy Box continue, and, it is a convenient place to pick up a copy of your weekly District Post from the stand by the front door! Top Scouting award for PMW team member A member of staff from Billingshurst based marketing agency PMW Communications, has been honoured with the highest award in Scouting, the Queen’s Scout Award, which she received during a prestigious ceremony at Windsor Castle on St George’s Day. Lizzie Blount, Account Manager at PMW, Cub Leader at Shipley Scouts and part of the Horsham Scouting Network, was presented with the award badge by the Duke of Kent and congratulated by Chief Scout Bear Grylls. To achieve the award, Lizzie had to undertake a number of activities, which included volunteering in the local community for 12 months, taking up a physical activity and showing improvement, completing 18 nights away with Scouting, and making a presentation to her Cub group to motivate, inspire and encourage them to achieve the Queen’s Scout Award at a later date. Additionally, Lizzie held various evenings with her Cub group, covering topics such as community values, how to help the environment and what it means to be a Scout. Lizzie commented: “I love being part of Shipley Scouts and working with my group to help them grow up with a wide range of skills, a healthy respect for themselves and their community and, of course, a sense of adventure. I’m
extremely honoured and proud to have received the Queen’s Scout Award. It was certainly a day I’ll never forget and I hope I’ve inspired some of my Cubs to go on to achieve the badge themselves.” Peter Sutton, Managing Director at PMW Communications, added: “We’re a proud supporter of our local community and have a long history of helping 1st Shipley Scouts with a number of their projects, so we’re delighted one of our own is an integral part of the group. Phil Lucas Entertainment Barnstormers That’s right folks, we’ve reached the point where we shut up shop for the summer... but not before we’ve delighted the, ever-lovely, Horsham audience with one final hurrah before the hiatus (Back in September, btw). As usual, three top circuit acts will be gracing the Capitol stage with freewheeling resident Barnstormers’ host Kevin Precious (pictured), on hand to oversee the proceedings. This month’s performances include: the splendidly unapologetic northern force-ofnature, Debra-Jane Appleby, ‘’She has true funny bones and oozed laughs from her every line and her every look - one to keep a close eye on in our never ending search for comedy stars of tomorrow’’ Commissioning Editor, Channel 4; the digitally interactive daftness of Phil Lucas, ‘Like Harry Hill with PowerPoint, a stream of silly non-sequiturs coming from his mouth, while extra gags pop up on
Debra-Jane Appleby screen, giving twice the jokes for your money. A daft favourite for me.’ - Chortle; and the wonderfully effervescent Rob Rouse, ‘Rob Rouse is a born clown, a latter day Stan Laurel’ - Time Out. Debra-Jane Appleby Winner of both The Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, and Funny Women Comedy Award in 2005, Debra Jane Appelby is fast becoming one of the most popular comedians on the circuit. Debra has appeared on the BBC’s 28 Acts in 28 Minutes and on Paramount Comedy’s The World Stands Up, as well as having made a number of appearances on BBC Radio 5 Live, and as a guest on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. ‘’Hands down the funniest female comedian I have ever seen. A no-nonsense Yorkshire lass, Debra climbed on to the stage and was blunt and unapologetic in her approach from the offset. I would even go as far to say that Debra, along with Richard Herring, is one of my favourite comedy acts out of those who have climbed the Circle

Channel 4 Phil Lucas Phil Lucas is a master of highoctane digital tomfoolery. Using PowerPoint, his dodgy PhotoShop, out of date cultural references and barrage of multimedia silliness have made him a trusty pair of hands on stages up and down the country. He offers something completely different to anyone else on the circuit and this has made him a high demand comic, booked time and time again by clubs. A truly unique act. In addition to live work, Phil has written comedy, created projects and generated ideas for all sorts of businesses and institutions. Paid work includes Buzzfeed UK, Avenue Q, Brighton Dome Theatre, Sell a Door Theatre Company, The Poke, Juice Radio 107.2, The Brighton Argus and Wish Studios. He is currently comedy scriptwriting a computer game for a global entertainment brand. Phil is also highly adept at producing online viral material. His creations have appeared in many places, including: BBC News, ITN News, BBC Radio 1,2 and 4, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, The Sun, The Mirror, The Metro, The Guardian, London Evening Standard, LBC Radio, Huffington Post, Daily Express, Yahoo News and The Sunday Sport. ‘Consistently funny...A stupidly nice way to close the show.’

The Scarecrow’s Wedding
Scamp Theatre’s truly heartwarming adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s bestselling book, The Scarecrow’s Wedding, comes to the The Hawth on Sunday 4 June. Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay
are excellent scarecrows (they scare a lot of crows). Harry loves Betty, and Betty loves Harry, so they decide to get married and Harry sets off to search for their wedding day essentials, including a dress of feathers, a bunch of
flowers and a necklace made from shells. However, when the farmer notices he is missing a scarecrow, he replaces Harry with the devilishly smooth but dangerous Reginald Rake. Dashing, daring and ever so cool, can Reginald persuade Betty that he is the scarecrow for her? Will Harry make it back in the nick of time before Reginald ruins their special day? This truly heart-warming show is bursting at the seams with Scamp Theatre’s inimitable style and promises wit, drama, and wedding bells! This epic love story is suitable for all the family Performance: Sun 4 June 3pm, The Hawth Theatre. Tickets, priced £11.50 (Family of four: £40): Available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth.co.uk
The Opera Boys: A Powerhouse of Vocal Harmony
Operatic arias and classical favourites from ‘Nessun Dorma’ to ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ are mixed with showstoppers from ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’ right through to’Jersey
Boys’. The show also features brand new classical arrangements of modern day pop hits, all performed in The Opera Boys inimitable style.
Beautiful vocal arrangements, spectacular close part harmony and a great line in humour. The boys trained at some of the UK’s finest schools including The Royal Academy of Music and have each become highly successful performers in their own right. Between them they have performed lead roles on London’s West End and on Broadway in New York. They have performed as backing vocalists to some of the world’s biggest superstars including Russell Watson, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones and Elton John, and in 2015 one of the boys appeared as part of the Belgian entry for The Eurovision Song Contest, performing to a global audience of 200 million, and placing a very respectable 4th in the competition. A unique show combining beautiful, powerful and emotional music with funny, engaging and light-hearted entertainment!

How to make your property more attractive to buyers for under £500
A few quick and simple improvements to a property can do wonders in making it more appealing to prospective buyers and achieving the best possible price when you come to sell. Drawing on more than 30 years’ experience of connecting people with property, local property specialist Leaders offers some practical tips to sellers. Kevin Shaw, national sales director at Leaders, says: “At Leaders, we encourage our sell-
ers to enhance their properties wherever possible to help them attract the best choice of buyers and achieve a quick sale at the best possible price. By following the simple steps below you can make your property significantly more attractive to buyers, all for less than £500.” Pick up a paintbrush Perhaps the simplest job – but still one of the most effective – is to provide a fresh lick of paint, either in certain rooms or throughout the prop-
erty if needed. This is relatively cheap if you can do it yourself but guarantees a clean, fresh impression and can make a property more desirable to prospective buyers. Aim for neutral colours to appeal to most tastes. Finish those DIY jobs Buyers are put off by properties that they perceive need work doing. Make sure any of those maintenance jobs you’ve been putting off have been done before people come to view – fix that fence, fill that crack in the wall, put that door handle back on. A property that appears neglected is a major turn off for buyers. Revamp the bathroom and kitchen You don’t want to spend a lot of money on a home you’re leaving but there are small steps you can take to revamp your kitchen and bathroom to bring it up to buyers’ expectations. Scraping out and renewing the grouting between tiles plus re-sealing around baths and sinks can give your kitchen and bathroom a new lease of life and create a cleaner, crisper finish. Have a good clean Clean your home throughout, from carpets and skirting boards to windows and kitchen units. Make sure it smells as clean as it looks. If the carpets are badly worn or stained, it’s worth
investing in new carpet rather than risk deterring buyers. Presentation There’s only so much you can remove from view when you still live there; you still need clothes, appliances, towels and furniture! It is fine for your home to look lived in as long as it’s tidy! Make that bed, hang the towels up, put that paperwork in a drawer. Do a test viewing Ask a friend, preferably a tidy one, to walk around your home and tell you what leaps out at them as untidy or off-putting. It’s difficult to be objective about your own home and a fresh pair of eyes can be invaluable. Look at the outside Never underestimate the power of first impressions. Taking the time to repaint the front door, tidy up the front garden, clean the driveway or hang a basket of flowers can be all it takes to get that all-important kerb appeal. Getting your property as presentable as you can for viewing always pays dividends. Our experienced staff will be happy to help, with advice tailored specifically to your home and budget. Horse Racing Martin Read - Sports reporter Illustrious top jockey Ryan Moore from the local Cisswood Stables notched up another triumph in a Newmarket Classic – the first Classic of the season, the prestigious 2000 Guineas – last Saturday. 33 year old Moore warmed up with a win on Seventh Heaven in
the preceding Jockey Club Stakes, also for trainer Aiden O’Brien. In the 2000 Guineas Moore was on Churchill, sired by Galileo, giving O’Brien his record eighth win in the race. In 2005 Moore won the 2000 on Gleneagles, again for O’Brien, this time Churchill, last year’s champion two year old, was placed third at the half way stage, when Moore steered to the rails enabling the horse to take off, leaving Barney Roy and Al Wukair
in his wake. Moore described Churchill as having a magnificent mind, saying: “He’s such a lovely horse, everything you want – he travels, has speed and loads of class, always there’s more when you ask him.” O’Brien added: “Ryan gave him a lovely ride. We always thought Churchill was a horse with a lot of speed and he is very relaxed. The owners will decide about the Derby.” Just for good measure Moore bagged a treble at Saturday’s meeting riding Permian home in the Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes. But then he was our Champion Jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009, has won the Ascot Gold Cup, the Coronation Stakes, the Eclipse, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Oaks. Equally well known abroad, Moore has carried off the legendary Melbourne Cup, the Prix de l’Arc de Triumph and Prix du Jockey-Club in Paris, and top races in Ireland, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, United Arab Emirates and United States, too. Racing is in the blood – father Gary trains at Cisswood and jockey brothers Jamie and Joshua and sister Hayley are also no strangers to the winner’s enclosure.
Hawks end season with heads held high
Baketball Horsham Hawks U16’s ended the season losing their play-off semi final to league Champions Crawley Cagers but with heads held high after a terrific campaign which saw 14 wins and an overall 4th place in the Sussex League. Hawks faced a Cagers team containing many of the National League U16 Champions from the previous weekend in Manchester and competed extremely well throughout the contest. Indeed the early stages saw Hawks on top for much of the opening period including scoring the first 4 points of the match from James Maclean with some lovely incisive offensive transition which Cagers struggled to contain. The teams
then traded baskets including a superb 3 pointer from Jamie Miller and Hawks still ahead 14-13 until late in the quarter when Cagers power finally began to show to go ahead 21-14 at the break. Hawks were first to put points on the board at the start of Q2 from a Kieran Lee lay up but Cagers upped their game going on a 10 nil run to open a 15 point gap. The rest of the period was evenly contested with Miller again accurate from distance while Ollie Hutt converted back to back buckets inside the key. Morgan Hamilton’s well executed bucket at the buzzer was a great way to finish the half and showed what Hawks were capable of and still in the game down 46-29. Unfortunately for Hawks,
Cagers Canadian star player was extremely effective early in Q3 as they widened the margin but Hawks dug in with great determination and tenacious defence to restrict the Crawley team to 16 points in the 3rd period. However Hawks couldn’t translate that defensive stability into offensive potency and only produced 10 Q3 points with the margin 62-39 going into the final period. Q4 probably included some of Hawks best basketball of the whole game with any neutral spectators probably unsure of which team had won the league. All the bench players made excellent contributions with scores for Jamie Atkins, Tommy Strange and George Jeremy while Ash Beech’s defensive block on a lay up brought the large traveling support to its feet in appreciation. Hawks narrowly lost an entertaining 4th quarter 20-16 and the match overall 8255 but considering that half the squad had not played competitive Sussex basketball before, it was a highly respectable result. Head Coach Nick Probin reflected on what had been an excellent season commenting “all the team have contributed through a huge amount of hard work and applied themselves in a positive manner with each and every player developing individually and collectively and the fact Hawks were even playing in a match of such significance is a recognition of what they have achieved and the credit they all deserve”.

Hawks’ Lea-Clayton Nets National Championship Baketball Joshua Lea-Clayton (number 5) of the Horsham Hawks is celebrating a national title as U14 southern premier league side, Worthing Thunder emerged as National Champions in Manchester at the Junior National Basketball League Playoff Finals. After securing second seed in the south to London Lewisham, with a record of 16 wins and 4 defeats, the best teams from the northern and southern leagues faced each other in the knock out stages of the competition. First up for Worthing was a home tie against Milton Keynes Trojans which Worthing comfortably won 99-72 setting up a national quarter-final fixture against the Sheffield Junior Sharks. After a close first half it was Worthing who prevailed 86-64 to reach the prestigious National Basketball League ‘Final Four’s’ which are held in Manchester over a weekend at the Basketball England National Performance Centre. It was a familiar story in both semi-finals as the top two teams from the northern and southern premier leagues emerged from the early rounds of the playoffs to face off in the semi-finals. Joining Worthing in their semi-final were the northern premier champions, City of Birmingham who had only registered a single defeat all season. The other semi-final featured southern premier winners, London Lewisham Thunder and the Manchester Magic. A talented Worthing Thunder
team exploded out of the blocks in their playoff semi-final to take a 99-72 victory over the City of Birmingham. Meanwhile London Lewisham Thunder beat Manchester Magic 75-61 setting up an all-southern conference final. As one of the few sides that have beaten Lewisham this season, Worthing Thunder were relishing a rematch in the National Championship game. In front of a packed house and despite a tight first half it was Worthing who dominated the second half securing an 87-72 victory to become national champions. Josh Lea-Clayton said, “This has been an incredible experience and I have learned so much as well as made some strong friendships along the way. The standard is really high which pushes me to want to keep improving as a basketball player. To win a national championship is amazing.” Worthing Thunder coach Daniel Hildreth commented, “It feels absolutely fantastic to have achieved our goal of winning a national championship, these kids have worked hard all year and it was a total team effort. It was a team win today and I’m just so pleased for – and proud of – them.” Playoff Results: Round 2: Worthing Thunder 99-72 Milton Keynes Trojans. Quarter-Final: Worthing Thunder 86-64 Sheffield Junior Sharks. Semi-Final: Worthing Thunder 99-72 City of Birmingham. Playoff Final: Worthing Thunder 87-72 London Lewisham Thunder.

B’s up against Lewes and Marlins B in division 2. The A team swimmers got off to an amazing start with win after win dominating each section of the gala. The opposition was literally left in the wake of Atlantis who showed formidable strength, technique and power cruising to an emphatic win with a points total of 449 well over 100 points ahead of the second place team Brighton. The B team swimmers also stepped up to the mark with some determined swimming securing a commendable second place on the night. A special mention must go out to Matt ‘The Mackerel’ Cumber who served up one last splash coming out of retirement to compete in the men’s open division and treated the crowd to to a now rare glimpse of magic in the pool! Cumber who is also a highly regarded coach at Atlantis arguably took his life in his own hands competing against competitors 30 years younger than himself showing that an old fish can still swim with the best. Head coach Andy Lobley commented” I don’t think we can ask any more from our swimmers. Two really great performances from two great teams that both perform at such a great level is really rewarding”
May day Bank Holiday heralded the return of the Ron and Eileen Branch Shield at Pulborough Bowls Club. 8 drawn pairs played 2 sessions of 8 ends, after which, the top 2 teams on shot difference, played a final of 5 ends to decide the overall winners. Jane and Malcolm Gray played against Ivan Salmon and Paul Smith, with the latter being the victors by just 1 shot! The shield was kindly presented by John Woolgar, Eileen Branch’s brother. Tues 2nd May saw the Pulborough bowlers head to Marine Gardens in Worthing to play the Grasshoppers, (a team of ex-police men and women). As soon as the players pulled into the carpark, the heavens opened and it looked like the game would be called off, but as luck would have it, Marine Gardens have 2 large, indoor bowls
carpets that happened to be free, so the match was moved indoors. 16 ends of interesting bowls followed, with some of the players struggling to adjust to the faster carpet and others enjoying the unexpected challenge! Of the 5 matches, 3 went to the Grasshoppers and 2 to Pulborough, with the final score being 74/109 to the Worthing side. Top rink for Pulborough went to Skip, Paul Day, with Jeff Davy as lead and Roger Jupp playing number 2, 16/12. The weather cleared on Thursday, in time for Pulborough’s first match of the season in the Brookes Motors League, or BML as it is otherwise called. The green was still playing a little heavy for the Storrington side, but this gave the home advantage to Pulborough, who used the jack length to play to their strengths. Malcolm Gray, Kath Ayling and Alan Jordan found themselves up against a similarly skilled triple, who kept the scores tight, despite loosing a 4 on end 9
and having to fight back point by point until a draw was reached at 18 shots a piece at 18 ends! Skip, Paul Day, with Julie Day and Mick Ralph in support, stayed ahead of the Storrington side from the second end, to finish with a top rink of 18 shots to 10. Pulborough stole a well deserved 5 out of 6 points from Storrington, to kick-start their 2017 BML campaign! Saturday the 6th saw some fun in the sun on the outdoor carpet at Southbourne. A new favourite with some of the Pulborough players, the surface was quick, with plenty of swing on the woods, making for an interesting friendly over 18 ends. This time, the home advantage went to Southbourne, with wins on 2 out of 3 rinks. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Mick Ralph, with Steve Adsett as lead and Roger Jupp as number 2, 17/16. The final score was 62/45 to Southbourne, but a fantastic afternoon was had by all! Pulborough BC visit Henfield on Sunday 7th, followed by a friendly roll-up with members of the Pulborough Church community on Tues, their first game in the West Sussex Bowls League, at home on Thursday against Storrington, from 6pm and a home game against Marine Gardens on Friday from 2pm. On Sunday 14th May, Pulborough Bowls Club will be holding an Open Day for members of the public to come and try the game for free, in a relaxed, no pressure environment. Refreshments will be available and experienced players will be onhand to coach and play alongside anyone that would like to have a go, all ages are welcome and practice bowls will be available to use, just wear some flat shoes! Gates open at 2pm, hope to see you there!

Horsham storm through to Roffey start with another great cup final win pulsating last gasp Photo by Nick Evans
Saturday May 6 Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 270-8 (50 overs) Roffey 270-6 (50 overs) Roffey won by 4 wickets – Roffey 28 points – Brighton & Hove 13 Cricket Martin Read - Sports reporter
Saturday May 6 Sussex Cup Final – Horsham Ladies 5 2 East Grinstead Hockey Martin Read - Sports reporter At Lewes Horsham Ladies romped home with another cup final win - since the 2001-2 season they have appeared in twelve finals, winning ten. So, Horsham did what they do best, but they had to fight back from conceding the first goal and being on level pegging – 2-2 – at the break. Victories against East Grinstead are never gifts. CJ White opened Horsham’s account only for East Grinstead to retake the lead, until Sam Stares equalised
with a rebound off a short corner. The second half, though unquestionably belonged to Horsham. First, Issy Malzer deflected the ball into the net, then Emily Smith increased the lead before her hit from the right enabled Sam Stares to put in Horsham’s fifth goal. Ladies’ Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “East Grinstead were a good team but Horsham were in great form and could have scored even more. Our forwards applied a lot of pressure, earning 12 short corners - Lea Prichard, Louisa Denman, Emily Smith, Alicia Remfrey and Issy Malzer were all outstanding as was Alex Malzer with Sam Stares in the centre. All in all
a great team performance!” Ladies’ Club Captain Charlotte “CJ” While added: “That was some of the best hockey that we’ve played this season! We really benefited from the coaching of Julie Ferrett and Gill Adams and, as ever, great help from Jane Denman”. Horsham Hockey Chairman Nick Evans summed up with: “This was a fantastic result - for the first time in our history we hold both the ladies’ and men’s 1st XI Sussex Cups. Neither side were at their very strongest but we thoroughly deserved to win. We are expecting to retain most of our squad for next season, which will give what is an exciting young team a chance to develop further.”
Depleted Horsham undone by impressive Nomads Saturday May 6 - Sussex Premier League Preston Nomads 289-5 (50 overs) Horsham 218 all out Preston Nomads won by 71 runs – Nomads 30 points, Horsham 8 Cricket Martin Read - Sports reporter At Fulking a weakened Horsham side were on target half way through their reply to Preston Nomad’s challenging 289-5, but slipped to defeat following Michael Thornely and Ryan Maskell’s dismissals. Electing to bat, Nomads lost an early wicket, but recovered to 100 before Phillips was out for 51. Then, their skipper Jeremy Green put on 101 for the third wicket with 19 year old Sussex signing Jonty Jenner from the Channel
Isles. After Green went Jenner plundered the attack for his maiden Premier League century – his unbeaten 105 coming from 81 balls, including 11 fours and 5 sixes. Michael Munday was the most economical bowler with 2-49, David Croshaw also taking two wickets and Mika Ekstrom one. In reply Horsham suffered an early setback but Ryan Maskell (51) and Michael Thornely (64) took the score to 150, but once they were out only Nick Oxley and newcomer Liam Ward reached double figures, the last five wickets falling for 27 runs. Jenner mopped up the tail with 3-16, while Nomads’ South African overseas fast bowler Craig Alexander – with 308 first class wickets to his name – took 4-27. Horsham Captain Michael Thornely told us: “I was keen for
us to have a good early test and Nomads are a strong, experienced team, but unfortunately we were without Beer, Gallagher, Haines and Garton, our big guns, and we had six debutants in our ranks. After we’d batted for 20 overs Nomads looked a bit worried because we were well up with the clock and had only lost one wicket, but once our top order were out their big score left us with too much to do.” Tomorrow (Saturday) in their first home game of the season Horsham welcome Cuckfield, last year’s runners up and widely considered strong contenders for this year’s League title. Last week Cuckfield posted 352-7, the highest score of the league, beating Ansty by 116 runs, New Zealand opener Jeet Raval making 149.
With half of the Premier League games on the new 50 over win format, the opening match enhanced Roffey’s reputation for entertaining cricket. Not a game for purists – there were flaws – but, memorable passages, too and a dramatic finale, culminating in Roffey squeaking home off the last available ball. Last year Roffey did the double over Brighton, winning the league there in style, and Brighton flirted with relegation, but they were no pushover, despite being already overwhelmingly eliminated from both the National and Sussex cups. Put in, Brighton started steadily, reaching 107-3 half way through their allocation, but, Roffey kept chipping away, reducing them to 191-8 in the 43rd over. Brighton’s batting frailty hinted at meek demise, but Jack Chopping had other ideas – launching a blistering assault, including 6 towering sixes from his unbeaten 69 out of the last 79 runs. Roffey’s
normally tight bowling and fielding wilted under pressure, although Leigh Harrison, George Fleming and Luke Barnard took two wickets apiece, Alex Collins and Theo Rivers sharing the remainder. The 271 target was demanding, but the wicket was good and the outfield fast, so, from a sound 122-1 platform at the mid point, victory was achievable. However, when Josh Fleming departed for 50 and Jibran Khan for 78, the balance tipped towards Brighton. But, Roffey are fighters, useful contributions coming from Usman Khan, Chris Webb and Matt Davies and, finally an unbroken 39 run partnership between Alex Southern and George Fleming. Seven were needed off the last over, two off the last ball, but the scores finished level, Roffey winning through losing fewer wickets, leaving Brighton with 15 less points, conceding 46 extras, including 35 wides not helping their cause. Relieved Roffey Captain Matt Davies told the District Post: “We didn’t execute our plans in the field and Chopping took advantage, striking the ball cleanly, but we managed to win despite being denied the injured Rohit Jagota’s all round services. We’ve got a big weekend – on Saturday (tomorrow) at Bexhill in the league and on Sunday at home against Tunbridge Wells in the National Cup”
