Voters will have to re-write Parliamentary history reaching back nearly 140 years to change the political colour of Horsham in next month’s General Election. Conservatives have held the seat in a true-blue grip for 137 years, since Henry Fletcher, later knighted, won it in 1880 from the Liberals. This time around there will be some familiar names candidates for the Horsham constituency. Nominations officially closed on Thursday of last week and several feature people who stood in 2015. They are Morwen Millson, James Smith and Jeremy Quin, Roger Arthur and Jim Duggan Confirmed candidates in alphabetical order are Roger Arthur UKIP, Susannah Brady Labour,

Jim Duggan Peace Party, Morwen Millson Liberal Democrat, Quin Jeremy Conservative , Catherine Ross Green Party, and James Smith Something New. Mr Quin was sitting MP until Prime Minister Theresa May called the election earlier this year. He had a clear majority at the 2015 election, recording nearly 60 per cent of all votes cast. In that year UKIP came second through Roger Arthur. Some people living in the south of Horsham District will elect an MP for the Arundel and South Downs constituency, held for the Conservatives by Nick Herbert before the latest election was called. Apart from Mr Herbert the only other candidate this year who stood two years ago is Liberal Democrat Shweta Kapadia. The Arundel and South Downs candidates, in alphabetical order, are Caroline Fife Labour, Nick Herbert Conservative, Shweta Kapadia Liberal Democrat, Jo Prior Green Party and John Wallace UKIP. Voting takes place on June 8.

£1,000 Up For Grabs For Horsham’s Most Deserving Youth Sports Team A company is searching for local deserving youth sports teams to receive a surprise visit and £1,000 donation towards their club. The Worcester Bosch Group has launched the search, and to kick off the campaign, ex-England footballer and ‘I’m a Celebrity’ contestant Wayne Bridge and exEngland rugby star and ‘Dancing on Ice’ winner Kyran Bracken returned to their grass roots to surprise players and spectators on the sidelines. As well as joining the young aspiring players on the pitch for a pep talk and coaching session, the sporting legends had an extra treat for parents, as they helped keep them warm on the sidelines with hot drinks, bacon sandwiches and blankets during the game. The heating supplier is now calling for locals in Horsham to nominate a deserving youth

team for the chance to receive a special visit and £1,000 donation when the season kicks off again in September. Burglar sought This man is believed to be connected to two burglaries in Horsham. Police have appealed for information from people who might recognise him. A house was broken into on Shottermill between April 28 and May 10, when a gold chain was stolen. On May 8 at about 9.30pm the occupant of house in Burn Close, Horsham heard a noise coming from his spare room. He got up and found a man trying to get in through the window. On coming face to face with the occupant, the suspect jumped into the garden and ran away. Detective Constable Chris Merryfield-Day said: “The occupant describes the suspect as white, 30 to 35, slim, around 5’ 8” with ginger or fair balding hair with a short beard. He is believed to have driven away in a blue Ford Focus starting with a V registration number. “We believe this man may also be connected to the burglary in Shottermill. Do you

An ex-care worker at a special school near Horsham has been sentenced to a total of nine years imprisonment for a series of sexual offences against young boys in his care, after a Sussex Police investigation. Robin Carter, 70, now unemployed, of Lewes Road, Westmeston, East Sussex, was sentenced when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court having been found guilty in March after a 20-day trial, of ten offences of indecent assault against three boys aged between 10 and 12, in the mid1990s. He was sentenced to six years, each sentence to run concurrently, for each of three offences, and was given three years for each of a further seven offences, each to run concurrently to each other but to run consecutively to the six year sentence. He was found not guilty of one offence of indecent assault on one of the boys. He will also be a registered sex offender for life and was given by the court a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) severely restricting his access to young boys. Between 1984 and 2000 Carter had been a residential child care officer or house parent, at Ditton Place in Staplefield, West Sussex, which was part of nearby Brantridge School, a residential special school catering for boys with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Sussex Police were made

aware of the incidents in 2014 when another former pupil contacted the School saying he had seen Carter behaving inappropriately with a pupil. Detective Constable Gilly Sadler said: “Over 18 months Carter had used his status with vulnerable young boys, all with various problems, to groom and systemically sexually abuse him. “The victims bravely gave evidence against Carter at the trial and this case once again shows that we will always take seriously all such reports, and will investigate wherever possible, to seek justice and support for victims no matter how long ago the events occurred.” Police emphasise that the events happened more than 20 years ago and have no connection with current management or current or recent pupils at Brantridge School. Ditton Place closed in 2002.

In a bid to raise funds for Help for Heroes, which supports those with injuries & illnesses sustained while serving in the British Armed Forces, Michelle Butt, Adam Clarkson, Dave Haigh, Matt Harris, Barry Horne, Vicky Horton, Paul Kendall and Paul Morris put their fitness, stamina and organisational skills to the test, by climbing the UK’s three highest peaks - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snow-

don - in just 24 hours. A total of 11,180 ft was ascended and 42km walked, scrambled and climbed. West Sussex based business, Parkers Car and Truck Rental, generously provided a vehicle for use on the challenge. Barry Horne, from Horsham, explained: “They gave it to us for free when they found out who we were and that we were doing it for Help for Heroes. “Overall, it was a challenging day for a worthy cause. Some of the hardest parts were probably the driving in between, as all you wanted to do was eat some proper food and sleep. Standing at the bottom of Snowdon at 3am, cold, tired, hungry, armed with a head torch, was probably the other low, but well worth it being at the summit for the sun rise”. Phoebe is pure gold in Oympiad Talented Phoebe Thornhill led the way with gold as Christ’s Hospital’s sixth form pupils starred in this year’s British Biology Olympiad competition. The youngsters carried away five medals, including gold, and four highly commended certificates. Phoebe’s win puts her in the top 6% of the 7500 students who sat the Biology Olympiad nationally. Elspeth Muir, Crispin Leung and Max Day, all achieved a silver medal and Mercy Adeyemi who achieved a bronze. Phoebe, from Midhurst, is studying for her International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and has received an offer from Oxford University to read Biology in the autumn. She said: “I wanted to do the best I could and I am delighted to have improved on my last year’s performance.” All medal winners will be attending an awards ceremony at the Institute for Engineering and Technology in July. The British Biology Olympiad is a national competition for A level and IB pupils run by the Royal Society of Biology. The British Biology Olympiad challenges and stimulates students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents.

Horsham care home publishes guide to help overwhelmed carers

It is hoped that competing in the Olympiad will encourage students already interested in this valuable, wide-ranging and rewarding subject to continue their study beyond the sixth form.

A care home in Horsham is providing support for people caring for a loved one after finding 55 per cent feel ‘overwhelmed’ by their caring responsibilities. Skylark House on St Marks Lane has launched A helping hand, a guide packed with practical and emotional advice and support, after surveying 1,000 people who care for, or have responsibility for, someone over the age of 55. The easy-to-follow guide has been designed to support those who care, and pools the expertise

of Care UK’s care colleagues and fellow carers. The study found that 66 per cent of carers in the South East said they never or don’t often ask for help with caring responsibility. A further 43 per cent admitted that they weren’t aware that there was government support available. The guide provides information on the rights of carers and the help they are entitled to, as well as offering ways for them to continue delivering great care for their loved one while keeping

themselves happy and healthy. Carers are also offered information on what to consider and how to proceed should they wish to explore respite or permanent residential care for their loved one. Popular television presenter, Ruth Langsford, welcomes the publication of Skylark House’s A helping hand guide. She said: “It is sad but not surprising to hear about the pressure family carers put on themselves when looking after a loved one. My mum looked after my dad for ten years as his primary carer before we sought help and a guide such as A helping hand would have provided some help and comfort for us at a difficult time.” The study also revealed that 36 per cent of respondents in the South East admitted that they neglect their own wellbeing due to time being taken up by caring responsibilities. A further 28 per cent also said that they neglect their relationship with their partner, and 13 per cent even added their relationship with their children was negatively impacted. Organ magic helps charity Super heroes sought The presentation

A 1950s fairground organ called Bellpee used by a Horsham man has helped a children’s charity to the tune of £4,543.57p. The money was raised over four years thanks to owner Brian Parkinson taking the mobile instrument to steam rallies at show grounds across Sussex and playing music to the crowds in return for a donation to the NSPCC. Mr Parkinson said: “I’ve been using the organ to raise money for various charities for the last 20 years but since 2014 I’ve been raising money exclusively for the NSPCC. It’s a fantastic cause and one I’m proud to support. “People are very generous and

are only too happy to put a few coins, or notes in the boxes which are next to the organ, hung from the front flap and even placed round the neck of a teddy bear and monkey puppet.” The 67-year-old’s fundraising efforts started off as a one man show but for the last three years Robert Taylor has been attending the events with him. Mr Taylor, who is also 67-yearsold and lives in Horsham, said: “I was at a steam rally at Laughton Show Ground when I saw the organ. I thought it looked interesting so I went over and got chatting to Brian and he asked me to give him a hand.

“It needs two people to operate it really as you have to keep the music going by feeding the organ books of music which is done manually. I helped out at that show and haven’t looked back since.” To thank the pair for their efforts they were presented with a certificate when they dropped off a cheque for the latest amount they raised - £1,625.25p - which is included in the total figure. Moira Mitchell, Community Fundraising Manager for West Sussex, said: “The amount raised by Brian and Robert is a great achievement and we are extremely grateful to both of them for giving up their spare time to help raise money for the NSPCC. “Every penny donated enables us to continue to provide vital services and support to children and families across the country. “One of the services we provide in the Sussex area is our Speak Out. Stay Safe programme. It involves specially trained volunteers visiting primary schools to talk to children aged five to 11 about the different forms of abuse but in a childfriendly way. At the end, pupils know how to protect themselves and the help available to them including Childline. “In 2015/16 our volunteers visited over 70 schools in West Sussex and spoke to almost 5,193 children. Schools can book a visit via the NSPCC website.”

Super heroes are being sought as Spider-Man is comes on a special mission to help a local charity. He will be leading a children’s Super Hero Fun Run around Tilgate Lake, Crawley on July 22 to raise vital funds for local charity Home-Start CHAMS, which serves, Horsha, Crawley and Mid Sussex. Last year more than 200 little Super Heroes joined Spider-Man, from Super Hero Parties, to take on the challenge which raised more than £3,400 for HomeStart CHAMS. As well as sponsorship for the run, local children came up with a range of ways to raise money, from a Fundraising Day at nursery, to doing chores around the house. Each year Home-Start CHAMS help hundreds of local children in families dealing with issues such as mental health, financial problems, or serious illness. Their trained volunteers work with the families, helping parents to overcome these challenges and give young children the best possible start in life. Aneliese Whittaker, Fundraising and Marketing Co-ordinator at Home-Start said “This event is a fun way for local children to get involved and support other children. We are so grateful to

Super Hero Parties, Crawley Wellbeing and Tilgate Parkrun, who are supporting this event to make it the best Super Hero Fun Run yet.” With a choice of 1.5km or 500m distance, this event is open to all ages and abilities, although under 11s must be accompanied by an adult. Trainee firefighters took on a mountain challenge to raise money for charity. The 11 latest recruits, who are approaching the end of their 14week intensive training course, underwent the challenge to climb the equivalent of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres) in just two hours. A ladder was pitched to the third floor of South Terminal Car Park 1 at Gatwick Airport and the recruits continuously climbed up and descended down the internal staircase. Following a fantastic team effort, they beat expectations and climbed a total of 6,070 metres in less than two hours! The firefighters’ efforts have

raised £1,074 for a cause close to their hearts, The Fire Fighters Charity. The training Course Commander for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Keith Parvin, said: “The effort that our trainees put into this event was outstanding, from the preparation through to their tireless performance on the day; they have done us all very proud. “The commitment and attributes they have shown, not only during the ladder climb but throughout their time in training school, will benefit them tremendously throughout their working career in the fire service.” Trainee Firefighter Seb Estafani said: “All the support that

New cadet detachment planned

Organisers hope to open a new Army Cadet Force group in the Billingshurst area next year. But first they are looking for adult volunteers who can supervise. The Sussex Army Cadet Force is opening a new Detachment in the Billingshurst Area to meet what it calls the ever increasing demand for these development opportunities, as its existing detachments in the local area are fast filling up.

A spokesman said: “We aim to have the new Billingshurst Detachment open in September 2018. However to enable us to meet both existing demands and new staffing demands the proposed new Detachment we urgently need to recruit new Adult Volunteer Instructors. Sussex Army Cadet Force provides challenging experiences and opportunities for young people aged between 12 (Year 8) and 18.

“No previous military experience is required as Sussex ACF will give full training, Adults between 18 and 58 who can spare a few evenings a week and some weekends can apply to join. Photographers feature in a new exhibition that has opened at Horsham museum. Called “Steyning Camera Club: Photography and Digital Imagery” it runs until July 1. The museum said: “With all the mobile phone and camera technology available to us today, capturing a moment in time is easy. But, capturing that moment with an artistic eye to create a final image which combines elements of art, precision and depth of subject takes a sophisticated approach and real skill - as shown by the new exhibition Steyning Camera Club: photography and digital imagery at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, opening on Saturday 6 May. Formed in 1972, Steyning Camera Club will be displaying varied inspirational images of nature, portraits, together with the landscape and built environment. Well done to £100,000-up Julian Julian

Horsham church organiser Julian Martin, who has helped raise thousands of pounds for Christian Aid, was chosen to be presented with an award to acknowledge his outstanding contribution. Julian, whose door-to-door collections for Christian Aid over the past 20 years have raised more than £100,000, had a date to be presented with a Diamond Award at a ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Brighton, by the Bishop of Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner. The Diamond Awards have been created by Christian Aid as it prepares to mark 60 years of its annual fundraising drive, Christian Aid Week, which runs from May 14th-20th this year.

Julian recalls the time he began his vital work for Christian Aid when a vacancy for area coordinator arose: “A small voice inside me compelled me to volunteer…I have loved working with various church coordinators over the years – we are like a family, ready to support each other,” he said. Other local events during Christian Aid Week include collections at Horsham Station on 14th – 20th May and at Swan Walk Centre on 27th May. Every May, thousands of supporters take the streets – for door-to-door collections, bake sales, sponsored walks, abseils, among many other events – to raise money to support people around the world living in poverty.

Christian Aid’s Sussex Regional Coordinator Mark Rodger, said: “Right now Christian Aid is tackling poverty in around 40 countries around the world, including providing support to refugees and food and water to those on the brink of starvation across East Africa where the lives of 16 million people hang in the balance. “It is no exaggeration to say that it is thanks to the dedication and vision of supporters like Julian that we are able to respond and not only reach these people in desperate need but also challenge the causes of poverty at the same time.” Christian Aid was born in the aftermath of the Second World War, when a generation of Christians decided they would not stand by while people suffered

Jack the Ripper in the mix for students

Students followed in the grim footsteps of Jack the Ripper as one of the recent activities of Collyer’s school in Horsham. The group of psychology students took the trip of terror as they also explored psychology related themes at the Science Museum, London Zoo and the National History Museum. In the Jack the Ripper Walk the students deepened their knowledge of the origins of modern day police profiling. In another event The

Collyer’s Robotics Team secured a thrilling third place at the recent annual Student Robotics Competition at Newbury Racecourse, granting them a chance to represent the UK at the inaugural international robotics challenge in Washington DC in July. In the academic world, a record number of 500 students and parents attended two information evenings at Collyer’s, which looked at the world of Higher Education emphasising the

importance of preparation and research when choosing where to study next. Looking at the world of work, Collyer’s recently ran a UK Border Control recruitment event. Border Forces are now recruiting Assistant Officers as Operating Delivery Apprentices, which is an excellent route into a career with the Home Office. Head speaks out over 11-plus Frances

A head teacher of Farlington School has spoken out about the controversial 11-plus tests. Prep Headmistress at Farlington, Frances Mwale, told the Post: “ Friday morning’s Radio 4 Today programme interviewed a researcher from ‘education data lab’ who had been part of a study looking into the ‘Kent Test’ results: essentially their 11+ examination. They had shown that the majority of candidates from the maintained sector and receiving the Pupil Premium (the less well off), who did well in Key Stage 2

tests, did not pass the Kent 11+. The interview essentially argued against the current government policy of creating more, selective schools and that selective grammars are missing out on a large group of very able children, through a lack of accessibility to these tests. They concluded that for these pupils, ‘Taking the 11+ is like rolling a loaded dice’. Having worked in various different schools for quite some time, I have experienced teaching towards both the 11+ and the Key Stage national tests: they are extremely different and require a very different teaching and learning focus. I would indeed concur that a child who has worked for 4 years towards the national tests, then entered for the 11+ possibly with only a few months’ preparation, is likely to be set up for a fall. This week’s Times Educational Supplement’s ‘10 reasons to abolish SATs’, argues that SATs are unable to raise standards, have a negative impact on learning and wellbeing and drive our nation’smpreoccupation with league tables that are ultimately meaningless. At Farlington Prep, we have stuck with the tests once again this year. In part, this is because of our need for scores by which national comparisons can be

made. Pupils also need a summative assessment - rite of passage perhaps -at the end of their time in Prep, before moving on to senior. It is not high stakes for them as they already have their senior school place confirmed, but they nevertheless want to do their best. In the past, SATs data have been useful to affirm the girls’ achievement and to remind the teaching staff what a great job they are doing. However, since the abolition of Levels, the results we receive are less motivational: with 100 being the expected score, we see if girls are above or below this. With small classes, strong parental backup and – most importantly – excellent and dedicated teaching, our girls almost all attain expected or better in all areas of English and mathematics, despite the school being nonselective. But when there were Levels, our high and middle achievers were really spurred on towards gaining Level 6: this incentive no longer exists. In our second year of working towards the new Key Stage 2 tests, our curriculum has inevitably been moulded more, to a more fact-filled one requiring

a great deal of rote learning. This is then regurgitated rapidly, in order to gain the highest marks. Over the past two decades, hasn’t education been about encouraging different ways of thinking? Of developing creativity and originality and not primarily focussed on knowledge retrieval: now easily accessed even through our watches? The new National Curriculum is a retrograde step for us, and we find increasingly that it holds us back from the really exciting parts of mathematical and English learning in which our pupils ought to be engaging. I mean, Roman Numerals are an interesting detail of Classical studies, but why test them on a maths paper? Yet it would be a disservice not to prepare the candidates as fully as we can and so we inevitably teach them how best to jump through the hoops. With a whole range of other standardised testing available out there, we are seriously wondering why we should stick with the Key Stage 2 tests when working towards them is driving our teaching in a direction juxtaposed to our educational philosophy and vision of learning for the school. We are fortunate in the Independent Sector to be able to vote with our feet!”

Warning about refund fraudsters

Police are warning residents in Sussex not to be taken in by cold callers or text messages suggesting they are due a DVLA vehicle tax refund. One such unsuccessful attempt was made in Worthing late last month and police are aware that that there have been some similar reports elsewhere in the county recently, although there are no reports of the attempts being successful. The Worthing resident had a text message which claimed he was owed a DVLA vehicle tax refund. The bogus link site was tax-disc. gov.uk.dvla.mal.pw, which takes you to an equally bogus UK Gov looking site. This site asks for your bank details so they can refund your money direct in to that bank account. The man is very capable and astute but even he only just managed to stop himself pressing Send with all his bank details. A Sussex Police spokesperson said; “This is a recent variation on a well-established type of fraud across the country in which the criminals phone or text using a variety of ruses to try to make you supply bank details or withdraw cash. New Virtual Tour shows Event Centre’s versatility

With a new online virtual tour, launched this month at www. southofenglandeventcentre. co.uk, and nearly £50,000 of new business already booked for 2017, the South of England Event Centre, at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, is looking forward to an exciting year ahead. Chairman of the Event Centre Board of Directors, Tony Roestenburg, said: “We are really excited about the launch of the new virtual tour, made by Google, which gives a fantastic 360 degree view of the facilities of the Event Centre. “This unique venue offers huge

versatility to professional event organisers, corporate business and private individuals, with adaptable spaces for a wide variety of large and small indoor and outdoor events. Being able to direct new clients to the virtual tour, to see how the Event Centre can work for their particular event, will be a terrific asset in attracting more business.” The Event Centre will welcome some big brand events in 2017, including the Gatwick Diamond Charity Challenge in May; the Emily Ash Trust; International Paintball in July, hosted by the Millennium European Paintball

London Marathon runner raises funds for Sussex charity Matt Pickering made dreams come true last month as he participated in the London Marathon, raising more than £1,200 for a Sussex charity. The 42-year-old from St Leonards, Hastings, competed the 26.2 world-famous race in 4 hours, 11 minutes, and 50 seconds – all in aid of the Oliver Curd Trust. Based in Hastings, the Oliver Curd Trust provides holiday accommodation to families of children suffering cancer and other life threatening illnesses. Founded by Richard and Sarah Curd in memory of their son Oliver, who died of a rare bone cancer in 2007 aged nine, the charity has helped dozens of families. Matt, said: “I heard about the charity through my trainer Chris Hawkes (of Born Ready Fitness) and I was keen to push my body to the limits to support them. “So far, thanks to donations from family and friends I have raised more than £1,200 for the charity, with more money still coming in. Sussex Police, South Downs National Park and the RSPB are joining together to help dog walkers find out more about the county’s environment. The events are being organised by West Sussex County Council

and include topics from local nesting birds and the meaning behind the red flags to sheep worrying and the entertaining ‘Take the Lead’ campaign. Sheep worrying is currently one of the biggest rural crimes taking place in West Sussex. It is hoped that the events will give dog owners the chance to find out more about the law and

Hawks Championship Season Comes to an End Basketball U14 Horsham Hawks 59 - 92 Crawley Cagers The U14 Horsham Hawks dream of winning back to back county cups came to an end at the hands of the Crawley Cagers in a rematch of last year’s cup final. In a contest featuring a combined nineteen national league players and six national champions it was a relentless Crawley who dominated early on while Horsham struggled to find

the bottom of the net. With Horsham down by a seemingly insurmountable thirty points at the half the Hawks were forced to dig deep. Showing tremendous grit and determination, a resilient Hawks team responded by winning the third quarter 23-16. With just three points separating the teams in the second half the Hawks battled to finish the season on a positive note against the newly crowned Sussex League Champions.

Head Coach Dave Clayton commented, “After a frustrating first half the team were determined to play with pride and passion after the break and can hold their heads up high for the way they responded. Yes it’s disappointing not to be able to defend our title in the County Cup final but on this occasion we gave ourselves too much to do in the second half and came up against a deep and strong Crawley team who thoroughly deserved to go through.”

Football Martin read - Sports Reporter Horsham Sparrows celebrated their golden anniversary in sunny style with a comprehensive prgramme of activities at Tanbridge House School. Sparrows Day is an annual event, but this year it was a really special opportunity to bring together members old and new – and the wider football community - to mark the club’s achievements from very humble beginnings 50 years ago. Sparrows Secretary Simon King told the District Post: “We started with around 20 enthusiastic boys as a founder member of the fledgling Mini Minor League, and now we’ve got 18 Sparrows’ squads – boys and girls - with over 300 of our players here today! Usually on Sparrows Day our teams play one another, but this year each squad has invited guest opposition, with a fantastic take up and we’re delighted to welcome all the visiting teams joining us to enjoy our special day! From the Horsham area we’ve got Ambassadors, Tigers, Heron Olympic and Roffey Robins, Faygate and Southwater, and Cuckfield Cosmos, Forest Row, Oakwood, Rustington and Worthing have travelled in, too!” The school’s

fields were a hive of continuous football fun on six pitches, all officiated and watched by parents and grandparents with reunions aplenty. Spectator Mel Leddy, a coach in the 70s, saying: “This is a terrific family club – my son Steve played, he’s refereeing today in his daughter Emily’s match, so we’ve got three generations here!” Mel was with his friend Robin Gilley, another coach from the early days, his son David played too. Nearby Ashley Benn, a girls U14 player told us: “My dad, Darren, played for the Sparrows and now I love

The beer tent and food van were accompanied by music and announcements, while at the penalty shoot-out game, 10 year old Oscar Meinertzhagen said: “Sparrows’ home matches for my team are played at Greenway School and its very exciting to be here today!” Sparrows boys’ teams in the Horsham & District Youth Football League range from the Under 8s through to U16s, while the girls’ youngest team is the U11s, the senior girl’s team being the U18s, which, with the women’s squad competes in the Sussex County Women’s and Girls’ Football League. And, the Sparrows spot talent early with Little Kickers’ football for 4-6 year olds and the Sparrows Wildcats, the newest squad, backed by the FA to get girls aged 5-11 involved in the game. Simon King summed up with: “We’re entirely run by our fantastic team of over 40 volunteers, coaches and managers. Many thanks to all those working tirelessly to make our big day such a success – it was great to see them and all of the players together at our awards ceremony.”

A Trio Of Wins See Pulborough BC On Top Form!

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Sunday 7th May saw Pulborough BC play away at Henfield. Of the 4 rinks, 3 came away with a positive result against tough opposition! Ivan Salmon and team had a tough start, but pulled level with a 5 on the 7th end to finish just 3 shots ahead at 19/16. Skip, Steve Adsett, with Pauline, Mick Ayling and Mick Ralph were ahead from halfway, resulting in a convincing 24/17 scoreline. Top rink of the day belonged to Melvin Green, with Paul Smith as lead, Douli as 2 and Mick Ralph as 3 with 10 shots in hand, 26/16. The final result was 84/65 to Pulborough.

On Tues 9th over 20 members of 3 Pulborough Churches came together to have a fun evening out on the green, with Pulborough players to show them the ropes. A fantastic time was had by all, followed by an extensive spread of food and obviously, a few drinks at the bar! Thanks go out to all those that made the evening the best yet! Everybody prayed for some dry weather on Thursday, as the first fixture in the West Sussex Bowls League loomed large! But it wasn’t to be, with the heavens opening 3/4 of the way through and players reaching for their macs! Storrington BC seemed unphased by the heavy conditions and went on to steal 4 points out of

a possible 6, but Pulborough can claim victory with 2 rink wins and overall victory by 5 shots. Top rink went jointly to skips John Brown and Alan Jordan, each with plus 8 shots. Friday 12th saw the second fixture of the season against Marine Gardens, this time at home. Play started at 2pm with 4 triples from each side taking to the green. Conditions seemed to suit the home side, with all the Pulborough triples ahead at half-way tea. With the injection of sugar from some tasty treats, Marine Gardens tried to pull back, but it wasn’t to be! A draw on one rink was as positive as it got for the away side, with Pulborough almost doubling their score at 105/52! Joint top rink went to John Brown and Melvin Green with plus 18 shots! The first of 2 Open Days in 2017 took place on Sun 14th, with a fantastic turnout of over 40 people! The green was busy with Pulborough players helping new and novice players with technique to enhance their bowling experience. Surprisingly, the weather was glorious which topped off a positive day for the club. Pulborough next play Fittleworth on Weds from 6pm, Petworth away on Thurs from 6pm, Pagham away in the WSBL on Sat 20th and Steyning at home on Sunday from 2pm. Spectators and new members very welcome.

Storrington Bowling Club’s opening outdoor friendly

The opening outdoor match for Storrington Bowling Club was a friendly, on artificial turf, away at Petworth. Alan Head’s team pulled away for 4 ends to lead 3 – 1 but Murrray’s opposition team showed their metal to finally win 29 -12. Brian Bona’s team did not even have the comfort of leading at any stage and finished with a loss of

13 – 20. These two losses were, however, made up by Paul Leatherbarrow’s team winning 22 – 10, and Stuart McGeachie’s 29 – 8. This gave Storrington an overall win by 76 - 67 A few day’s later saw Storrington playing their first “real” lawn outdoor League ( Division 1 ) match , away at their Western neighbour’s ground at

Pulborough. Howard White’s team pulled away from the start, finishing with a well-defined win of 23 – 17; Mike O’Brian’s team kept in touch with P. Day’s team, with the score 11- 11 after 16 ends, but managed to win 5 of the 6 remaining ends to finish 19 – 14. However both of the other teams obviously needed more practice, both losing by 8 shots, resulting in a lost game of 65 – 70 A sunny day at the week=end had Storrington’s Eastern neighbours, Steyning, visiting them. 5 teams achieved 2 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw, with an overall score of 73 – 69 in Storrrington’s favour. The best win was Harry Kendall’s with a run-a-way score of 18 – 8. After 15 ends Geoff. Page’s team was lagging 13 – 16, but managed to hold their nerve to win 18 -16. Now 16 seemed to be a favourite score for Steyning as their two winning teams finished 16 – 10 . and 16 – 14, leaving Stuart McGeachie’s Storrington team with a 13 – 13 draw. This left Storrington with a 73 – 69 win.

Atlantis u15 regional championships Atlantis squad members competed in the first weekend of the Regional U/15 Championships this weekend and set a club record for both the number of qualifiers and the number of podium places achieved with another two days of competition still to come. Breaststroke ace Jacob Davis was crowned 13yrs 100m Champion and also collected the Bronze in his 200m event. Allrounder Amber Ranson scooped 4 podium places with 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes in her Back,Free & IM events with some dynamic performances Olivia Round Pitman was our unluckiest finalist being fingernailed out of a silver by 2/100th & the bronze by 1/100th of a second in her 50m free However she showed great determination to come back next day and record super PBs in the heat and final of the

13yrs 100m butterfly. The Atlantis swimmers now have a weekend off before the finale of the Regional Championships at the end of May where they hope to build upon their success.

Bexhill made a partial recovery from their shaky 25-4 start with a 67 run partnership, but slumped to 119-8 before limping remorselessly to an insufficient 146 all out. Rohit Jagota, returning from injury, was the most successful bowler with 4-26. Although some subsequent wickets fell cheaply, a typically breezey 33 from Usman Khan at under a run a ball, saw Roffey home with more than 16 overs left in the bank. Roffey Captain Matt Davies told us: “This was a pretty comfortable win for us putting us at the top of the table with East Grinstead. We’ve got them at home tomorrow (Saturday) – a big match for both teams!” Well-regarded East Grinstead have a strong young side and have bowled Roffey out cheaply in each of the last two seasons, acting as a spur for Roffey to go on to win the league. The visitors are boosted by former Sussex fast bowler Lewis Hatchett, who took 7-28 against Hastings in the first week of the season when the seasiders made just 62 in 18.2 overs, losing by 216 runs.

to win it but folded when victory appeared certain, Reigate snatching the initiative in the crucial final stages and when it mattered earlier in the game. At 146-1 with just 18 required off balls aplenty and Ryan Maskell and Michael Thornely going well all bets were off. But, when they were both out in quick succession – Maskell for 52 to an outstanding catch and Thornely for 76 – rigidity and terror took over, combined with batsmen suddenly being

unable to pick the line of the ball, three of the last six being bowled and the remainder LBW, Reigate bowling commendably straight. Although Nick Oxley made 12, the remaining seven batsmen could only muster three runs between them, off 35 deliveries, run scoring suddenly becoming impossible. Even though five wickets had just fallen, at 161-6 only three more were needed, but the task proved too daunting. Earlier, after Reigate had elected to bat, Horsham had them on the rack at 22-4, including the scalp of former Horsham player Ben Shoare. The visitors recovered somewhat – to 81-5, only to stagger to 104-8, Jonny Whiting taking 4-19, before a 40 run last wicket partnership, benefiting from a dropped catch, disappointingly took them to 163, but raised little concern because, it was surely inadequate considering that Horsham had 45 overs at their disposal. At 27, extras, including 19 wides, was the third highest contributor. James Brehaut and Michael Munday took two wickets apiece, Thornely and Oxley sharing the other spoils. Replying, a run out soon left Horsham on 6-1 but during Maskell and Thornely’s 140 run second wicket stand an assured win was merely a stroll - until the cricket gods issued a reminder that they must never be taken for granted. Incredulous Reigate Priory were naturally cock-ahoop to win with 34 balls unused, meanwhile, shell-shocked Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall told the District Post: “Unbelievable. The Kent Premiership side won the toss and batted first and after losing an early wicket recovered to 80-1 with opener Chris Williams batting well. They were, though, kept in check, until, with plenty of overs in hand an assault was threatened. But, Roffey’s Alex Collins ruined the visitors’ chances of posting a challenging score just when they were looking to capitalise from 142-4. Alex, delivering fast and straight from the pavilion end, bowled five batsmen, including Williams for

95, in three devastating overs for just 10 runs, the visitors capitulating for 164 with eleven and a half overs wasted. Apart from Williams only two other batsmen reached double figures, 17 extras being the second highest contribution. Luke Barnard took 3-27 and Rohit Jagota and George Fleming a wicket each, but unquestionably Alex Collins stole the show, modestly telling us: “I just bowled at the stumps and they kept missing, one or two kept low!” By contrast Roffey’s batting was far more consistent, opener Jagota making 41 before Usman Khan top scored with 45, and Jibran Khan weighed in with 33, getting Roffey home for the loss of just four wickets with more than 13 overs in hand. Roffey Captain Matt Davies said: “After Collo’s master class with the ball the result was never in doubt – he just came on and went through them! It was a comfortable win for us and we’ve got another top Kent side – Blackheath - the 2015 winners of the National Cup, at home in Round 3 on Sunday June 4. It’s been a massive weekend for us – going top of the league on Saturday and getting through in the cup today!”

Vettesse Gives Rusedski the Runaround at The Weald Tennis Festival

Sam Vettesse was the toast of Loxwood School at the Weald Primary Schools Tennis Festival yesterday. Given the opportunity to play a point against Greg Rusedski, former world ranked No 4 player and US Open finalist, he proceeded to go toe-to-

toe with him in a long rally and actually ended up winning it. ‘Vettesse’s Victory’ as it will come to be immortalised was just one highlight in a fun-packed afternoon of tennis that saw 80 children aged 7-9 years participate. They came in ten by

ten from eight different schools – Barns Green, Billingshurst, Loxwood, Plaistow and Kirdford, Rudgwick, Shipley, St Mary’s Pulborough, Wisborough Green – making venue Billingshurst Tennis Club, a smashing four court facility, a bit of a tennis Noah’s Ark for the day. Shipley’s headteacher, Jen Harvey, was delighted with the progress of her pupils, “They all were super engaged, made rapid improvement and it was wonderful to see how well they mixed in with other children.” St Mary’s girl Ria Joy was also commended by her teacher for exhibiting strong powers of concentration. Whilst the Shipley crew were relatively new to the game there were a number of ‘seasoned’ club players also on show. Luca Vorster from Billingshurst Primary was one such standout individual displaying the hand-eye coordination of a natural and the shot control of a child that knew his way round a tennis court. However just as importantly his teacher was delighted with the way he adapted his play to support the

less experienced youngsters around him. Wisborough Green’s Pippa Sheasby also provided a bit of class to the proceedings. Technical skills absorbed it was time to have a break and take in Greg Rusedski’s unexpected visit as part of the mid-afternoon break. Rusedski’s an experienced tennis commentator these days and he used his presentational nouse to hold everyone’s attention to the full. He started with some exhibition play against Billingshurst LTC’s Head Coach, Nigel Matthews, before progressing to some rally and drill based activities that involved children selected from the audience, although Vettesse as one of the invitees clearly didn’t read the script. Wisborough girl Brooke Meurer and Plaistow and Kirdford’s Sophia Wright are two more that will remember the day they had a hit with Greg Rusedski. He then proceeded to answer questions from the floor before finishing up at the centre of group photos. He certainly did the event proud. Back on court the second half the

activity offer involved employing the skills learned in matches and as coaches put a host of formats into operation the competitive juices flowed. However it was comforting to observe that despite some real desire to win that arguments were kept to a minimum and that the spirit was excellent. Things were kept more Henman than McEnroe. All the children were rewarded with some tennis trinkets and a certificate of participation for their efforts and as everyone departed some nice pieces of feedback were imparted. Mrs Harvey from Barns Green School commented, “It was lovely to see our children inspired today and for tennis to present itself as a really accessible sporting option.” Daisy Price, Loxwood’s PE Coordinator summed up her thoughts, “Thank you so much for such a fantastic event. We brought a range of children, who were all engaged and challenged throughout. What a great way to inspire and motivate the children”.
