Councillors approve homes for more than 6,000 people phil dennett News Editor
A huge estate of homes for more than 6,000 people on the edge of Horsham has been approved by councillors. The scheme is now before Horsham District Council’s Director of Planning, Economic Development and Property awaiting formal delegated approval when certain conditions are met. Kent-based Liberty Property Trust won approval for up to 2, 750 homes on a site known as “land north of Horsham” from the full district council this week. Councillors delegated the application for approval to the Director of Planning, Economic Development and Property, in consultation with the Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen of the Planning Committee North and the Planning Committee South and the Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, subject to a legal agreement on details and conditions. About 900 of the houses are expected to lower-priced homes, known in planning circles as “affordable”. The firm’s planning application was first submitted last July and a
decision was delayed because of the importance of the scheme. On April 28 the Planning Committee North refused to decide the scheme because of its importance and instead referred it to Monday’s special full council session. Liberty is also awaiting confirmation in the same plan for a business park under what is known as “mixed use development.” Despite delay at the Planning Committee North the company always had a good chance of success in planning policy terms, because the site is one allocated in the council’s local plan, Horsham District Planning Framework, to help achieve the target set by the Government for the district of building 800 homes per year over a twenty year period, along with a requirement for more economic development. The Local Plan was approved by a government inspector in September 2015. It was then adopted by Horsham District Council in November 2015. The shortage of homes and the struggle of young people to afford them have regularly been highlighted nationally. Liberty plans a new business park of 46,000 square metres to boost economic development by bringing in new companies and jobs, two primary schools, land and financial contributions towards a new secondary school, a multi-use community centre, health facili-

Liberty’s scheme is said to meet housing needs for people looking to rent or buy. The homes would include a broad mix of housing types and range from one-bedroom
apartments to five-bedroom houses. The council said: “The decision gives everyone certainty as regards shaping the future of our district in terms of new homes, jobs and infrastructure, within a sound strategic framework. “Above all, this key go-ahead gives the assurance that the council can continue to resist speculative

A former dancer who lost a leg had one of the treats of her lifetime thanks to her daughter. Nominated by her daughter Tracey King, pensioner and former dancer Shirley King, from Billingshurst, was chosen to receive a very special trip to see Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House In celebration of its year-long charity partnership with 52 Lives, GalaBingo.com asked people across the UK to nominate a friend, relative, neighbour or colleague who was in need of a helping hand. Open to anyone with a GalaBingo.com account, hundreds of heartfelt nominations flooded in – covering everything from pleas for much-needed car repairs, to family days out. The team at GalaBingo.com along with Jaime Thurston, Founder of 52 Lives, spent hours carefully considering each and every request, but a decision had to be made. Jaime Thurston said: “Shirley was a former dancer who has sadly lost her leg. Despite the loss, Shirley is still an avid fan of dancing, in particular ballet. “Shirley loves to watch DVDs of ballet, and her daughter nominated her to receive some more DVDs so that she can continue to enjoy her passion. “Thanks to support from GalaBingo.com, we were able to surprise Shirley and her two daughters with tickets to see Swan Lake at the Royal Opera House in July, as well as travel, accommodation, and
meals for the weekend. “ After finding out that her nomination had been successful Tracey said: “ I nominated my mum as I believe she deserved something special due to everything she has been through over the last five years. She has never moaned or complained and always carried on fighting! When I told mum that she had been chosen she was so overwhelmed and couldn’t believe it. “It’s emotional to see her so humbled by this generosity. I can’t describe what this means to us. For the first time in the last three years I have a little bit of my mum back again! I can’t thank 52 Lives and GalaBingo.com enough.” Alison Digges, Managing Director of Gaming Brands at Ladbrokes Coral, said: “We know that it can be hard to see someone we care about go without something – it is one of the reasons we have been proudly supporting 52 Lives with weekly donations, and ensuring they can go on changing lives and helping those who really need it. “52 Lives is a fantastic charity that changes someone’s life every week of the year, posting a story about someone every week on their website and social media channels, and working with supporters to give that person the help they require. For us, giving to those who are in need, and spreading kindness and happiness is so important. “We were delighted to arrange this special treat for Shirley and her daughters. Her story really resonated with us, and, although it was an incredibly tough decision to make, we felt she was especially deserving.” Duncan James, musician, actor and GalaBingo.com celebrity friend said: “I was proud to be involved in helping to spread the word about this partnership and nomination campaign back in December. Seeing the journey progress right through to the gift-giving stage has been a real pleasure. “I hope that Shirley and her daughters thoroughly enjoy their weekend at the ballet.”

Indigo is national champion Indigo with trophy
Talented Indigo Douglas is the national Poetry by Heart champion for 2017. She could be heard reciting ‘Your Attention Please’ by Peter Porter on BBC Radio’s Poetry Please on http://www.bbc.co.uk/ programmes/b08q3lcg Poetry By Heart - the brainchild of former poet laureate, Andrew Motion – is a recitation competition in which school students must learn and perform two challenging poems from the Poetry By Heart anthology. Indigo, a year 13 student, had won the school competition ,held on Valentine’s Day , and then the all-Sussex contest. This qualified her for a finals weekend at the British Library in London, along with 40 other county winners from all over the country. The format meant Indigo had first to see off her opponents in a tough South-East regional final before advancing to the grand final. Competition was punctuated by various poetry readings and events, including recording for BBC Radio’s Poetry Please. Fiona MacKenzie, the school library director, said: “First we had outstanding competitions which
produced eight regional winners plus one wildcard finalist. Then, in the final, Indigo absolutely excelled, captivating audience and judges with her renditions of Pope and Porter.” After a nail-biting wait Indigo was named overall winner by the distinguished panel of judges. Ms McKenzie added: “It was great to see her win, and she was an exemplary representative of the school over the two days of heats and finals.” Indigo came to Christ’s Hospital for sixth form in 2015 after attending a local school. She is in now in the second year of the challenging IB Diploma programme, and hopes to go on to study English and Creative Writing at Warwick University. She said: “The poems I picked intrigued me from the start, and now they will be with me forever.” For the school, Indigo’s victory means the Library will receive a lavish supply of books and subscriptions. Indigo also won some sparkling prizes, but enjoying them will have to wait because she is now in the midst of her final IB exams.

schools raised money for us, and we’re really grateful for their efforts. I’d like to thank our Five-O teams, their teachers, parents and NatWest mentors for helping us be there to care for local people.” If you are interested in finding out how your school can get involved in next year’s Five-O Project please contact Emily Bradbury and Keely Bicknell in St Catherine’s Community Fundraising Team on: comfun@stch.org.uk, or: 01293 447316.
Penny Jones, Director of Care Services at St Catherine’s said: “We are so grateful for the incredible generosity and support of the work we do at the hospice from Mairead’s family and friends. Mairead was a much loved member of St Catherine’s team, and dedicated five years of her life to caring for others. The money her family and friends have raised will make a real difference to our current patients and their families, and is a fitting tribute to the caring, compassionate lady Mairead was.”

supported St Catherine’s Five-O Project and each year we’re blown away by the dedication and inventiveness of the students involved. Each of them has worked really hard to raise as much money as possible for the hospice, and for us to be able to share our professional knowledge to help them achieve their fundraising goals is a real privilege.” Tom Abbott, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s, said: “It was great to hear the fantastic ways our
Family and friends of much loved nursing assistant Mairead Duggan, have raised £7,000 in her memory. Her colleagues at St Catherine’s Hospice, where Mairead worked for five years and was cared for as a patient, have received a cheque on behalf of the hospice. The generous donation was raised from a comedy night held at the Parsons Pig pub in Crawley just two days after Mairead’s death. About 150 people enjoyed a variety of comedy acts at the event which was arranged by Mairead’s family and Din Ranganathan, the brother of comedian, Romesh Ranganathan. People also tried their luck on a raffle that included once in a lifetime prizes such as; a helicopter ride over London and afternoon tea at South Lodge Hotel. Other donations came from an aerobathon arranged by Mairead’s sister-in-law Alex Duffy, and funeral donations. Ken Duggan, Mairead’s husband said: “We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us and helped raised money in memory of my wonderful wife. We’ve been really touched by the kindness and well wishes we’ve received, and gain comfort in knowing that the money we’ve raised will help St Catherine’s care for more people in future, the way that Mairead herself cared for people and her colleagues cared for her.”

Horsham’s Tanbridge School was among several who raised more than £16,000 between them for terminally ill people as part of St Catherine’s Hospice Five-O Project. The pupil’s achievements were recognised at an awards ceremony at the Holiday Inn, Gatwick where they were thanked, via video, by grateful hospice patients and staff. Watched by parents, teachers and mentors, pupils from Crawley’s Gatwick School, Thomas Bennett Community College and Hazelwick School, and Horsham’s Tanbridge House School presented their fundraising ideas to a judging panel in a bid to win one of four awards. Innovative presentations showcased varied fundraising ideas from a cake-off competition to a dodgeball tournament, and schools scooping an award included: •Hazelwick School - Most money raised •Gatwick School - Most pounds per pupil •Tanbridge House School - Best presentation •Tanbridge House School - Most innovative fundraising idea. Designed to develop students’ business skills, St Catherine’s Five-O Project challenged six students from mixed year groups, to unleash their inner entrepreneurs and organise fundraising events that would raise a minimum of £1,500 for St Catherine’s. Sponsors, NatWest, gave the students £50 as an initial investment, provided 15 business mentors, two business meetings, and a business skills workshop during the 11 week challenge. John Redfern, Head of Corporate Banking (South East) at NatWest, said: “This is the sixth year we’ve

A Simply Smashing Show of Glass
Shoppers reveal dreams At the event
Members of the local community revealed their biggest, lifelong dreams as part of an inspiring stand hosted by St Catherine’s Hospice. St Catherine’s invited shoppers to talk to their local hospice about the “D word” as part of national Dying Matters Awareness Week, which aims to get people talking about death, dying and bereavement. People filled in specially designed “Before I die” cards with a range of wishes from travelling to destinations like Australia, the Maldives, and Ireland to helping St Catherine’s as much as possible. Shoppers at Crawley took the time to read what others’ ambitions were before thinking about
their own, against a backdrop of pictures of hospice patients and staff. A few common themes of what the Crawley community most want to achieve before they die emerged as the day went on, and the most popular ambitions included: •Travelling - Including for specific reasons like to see the Northern Lights or Burning Man Festival •Seeing their own children or grandchildren fulfilled •Learning a new skill or hobby like the piano, a language or salsa dancing. Shoppers also spoke to hospice staff about the expert care that’s provided to terminally ill local people and their family and
friends across Sussex and Surrey. Laura Mitchell, Communications and Marketing Executive at St Catherine’s said: “It was great that so many people engaged with our Before I die board and there were some really moving and interesting ambitions written. It’s not often people take time to reflect on the things they’d most like to achieve before they die, but it’s important they do and we’re proud to lead our community in thinking like this. We’d like to thank County Mall for giving us the chance to start conversations like this, and we hope everyone who took part or read others wishes went away feeling uplifted and inspired.”

Two different attractions for pupils Chick eggs and signing provided widely contrasting events for pupils at the Towers School. The Juniors had a very exciting week with the arrival of the eagerly-awaited eggs, which caused a great stir among staff and pupils alike. The whole community found itself glued to the “chick cam” watching and waiting as each chick hatched and made its first hesitant steps. It has been a perfect opportunity for our boys and girls to learn to about the life cycle of hens and how to rear chicks as well as enhancing their understanding of the miracle of new life. And in a different sphere youngsters enjoyed an evening of music from the movies.
It was an evening of stunning singing, dazzling dance and memorable music. Clare Trelfa , headmistress, said: “From Peter Pan to My Fair Lady, James Bond to Sister Act, Lion King to Aladdin, Toy Story to Phantom of the Opera and more – we were treated to them all. The talent on show was extraordinary and the warm applause from the audience, well deserved. It was wonderful to see so many girls enjoying themselves on stage and their support for each other was heart-warming. A huge thank you goes to all the girls involved but especially to our amazing music teacher, Mrs Gray, for inspiring so many and for putting the whole show together.”

Stephen gig helps charity Stephen Foster took his brand new show to the Billingshurst Centre in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The show was a tribute to the legendary David Bowie and in the second half featured a glam rock revue where Stephen and his group performed songs by artists such as Queen, T.Rex, Sweet, Slade, Status Quo, Sparks, Alice Cooper and The Glitter band. The show sold well and raised the grand total of £720 for Macmillan. After some great comments and public demand it is hoped that Stephen will be performing a special festive show near Christmas which hopefully may feature some original 70s Glam rockers.

Grease is so slick for students The girls from Farlington School’s Upper School took part in a spectacular production of ‘Grease’, providing one of the highlights of the year for the Senior School students. Farlington was commended for it “highly successful prep and senior school drama productions” in its recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report, and this production was of the usual, exceptional standard. Slick, funny, edgy and bursting with foot-tapping tunes – ‘Grease’ has become the iconic 70’s musical. Farlington School’s production had it all, not least a driving pace and tremendous vitality. Millie Jewry as Danny and Abigail Hart as Sandy would have given the illustrious stars of the stage and film versions a good run for their money, such was the conviction of their acting and the quality of singing. Where they led, a talented cast of twenty wowed the audience with some outstanding character portrayal. The
leather-jacketed T-Birds were totally convincing as the ”tough” gang of high school boys but they more than met their match in their female counterparts, the raunchy “Pink Ladies”. Under the superb direction of Emma Spires, the college stereotypes - the nerds, the headteacher and her staff and, of course, the cheerleaders – were parodied with cleverly-observed mannerisms; and the brash American media image was expertly personified by the show business caricatures. The musical direction of Jane Thomas delivered singing that was soulful where required but – supported by the excellent band and the superbly exciting choreography of Lucy Cooper and Lizzie Booth – it also captured perfectly their vitality and the drive of these American teenagers. In the words of the song… Electrifyin’! report: David Thomas. Scenes from the show are pictured.

Air Cadets climb the heights Bridge builders at work
climbing the heights Air Cadets from various units from all over Sussex came together to run their Mobile Climbing Tower at Plumpton Racecourse’s Families Day. The Mobile Climbing Tower, or MCT for short, allows members of the public to try rock climbing on site. Sussex Air Cadets were there to
fundraise for some fantastic expeditions that are happening next year to mark the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the RAF. Air Cadets will be travelling to NASA in Houston and Machu Pichu in Peru - one of the Seven Wonders of the World. For one Cadet, Lucas Huntley, this was his last event before he
transitions into Adult Service. He said: “I’m glad this is my last event as a Cadet, despite me joining at 17, I have got so much from my Cadet Career and would encourage anyone thinking of joining to do so.” The Cadets also had the privilege of escorting Whinny – Plumpton’s racing horse mascot who was handing out Easter eggs to all the kids at Families Day. Once a harness was found that was big enough to fit him, he couldn’t resist but to climb the wall himself. The Officer in Charge of the event, Flying Officer Richard Foster said: “Plumpton Families Day has become a yearly ritual for us, that we plan our diaries around it. We get lots of support from all the families that attend, and would like to thank the organisers of Plumpton for inviting us back year after year. I know all the Cadets and Staff always have a great time.” This is one of many activities offered by Sussex Air Cadets, they also have the chance to do many activities including visits to RAF Stations, Adventure Training & the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Sussex Air Cadets is recruiting, if you are interested in joining and are aged between 12 and 18, you can contact our Wing Headquarters on 01323 899900 who will put you in touch with your local unit. We also welcome applications for adult volunteers, who can contact us on the same address.
The Year 7 girls at Farlington School proudly displayed the results of their bridge-building challenge. This project fitted into the topic on Forces they have been studying. The teachers gave the girls some different bridge types to think about and discussed different functions, such as crossing a deep valley or a wide, shallow river, carrying heavy traffic or pedestrians. The girls were asked to research at least two different types of bridge before designing and constructing their own. Their bridge had to cross a 30cm span and could be entered into one of three categories: creative design, construction design or strength.
The girls were very enthusiastic and worked hard on both the research element and the actual construction, gaining a real sense of achievement from the project. The final designs were very varied with examples of truss, rope, suspension and arch bridges. Interesting materials this time were chocolate and sweets, horse shoes, and a jute thread platform made using macramé. Lucy Harrison welded her bridge together. The schools also had an Eco Award this year for Millie Lewis, who envisaged the real bridge being made from hempcrete, bamboo, and ferrock, a material made from steel dust that absorbs carbon dioxide.

We are very proud of how hard our pupils have worked in the build-up to this week and the boost provided by Sainsbury’s, The Fat Cow and Coco’s is a wonderful demonstration of the support of the wider community in wishing them success.” Ian Goacher, Sainsbury’s Store Manager, said: “A healthy

Facing a week of SATS exams, pupils at Billingshurst Primary School are being given the best possible start thanks to their local Sainsbury’s store. For the third year running, the school and Sainsbury’s will be providing all pupils in Year 6 with a boost by providing breakfast before the SATS exams. The initiative has been a huge success over the past three years, emphasising the impact of eating breakfast can have on children’s ability to concentrate during such an important time. At the start of each day, pupils will have the opportunity to relax together over breakfast, culminating in a special treat at the end of a

successful week of ice cream from the Fat Cow on Friday afternoon. Pupils have also been treated to an exclusive ‘SATS pack’ from the Billingshurst branch of Coco’s Hairdressers, containing some essential stationary items to help with their exam preparation. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School said: “Ahead of any exam, there is a natural tendency to skip meals or reach for sugary foods, as such it is so important to teach our children how to eat well, look after themselves and promote good habits at this stage in their school lives. Each year, the pupils tell me
A healthy breakfast plays an important part in helping pupils to achieve their full potential. breakfast plays an important part in helping pupils to achieve their full potential. We wanted to provide a menu that was tasty and brain-boosting, so each pupil has the energy they need to face the challenge. We are delighted to be involved in what we are sure will prove to be a very successful week and wish the children every success both now and in the future.”
Georgia takes a step in career Georgia Howlett from Horsham has been accepted for professional dance training at one of Europe’s premier schools for professional dance training and education, the Central School of Ballet, known as Central, in London. Georgia, aged 17, has been dancing since she was three years old and is close to completing her first year at Central. Selected from 400 applicants, Georgia was one of only 38 pupils to secure a place on this three year degree course, a BA (Hons) in Professional Dance and Performance, accredited by the University of Kent) Central says it is the only dance school in England to offer this ballet-focused qualification. Being accepted by Central School of Ballet is through auditions held between October and March each year in London, Glasgow, Leeds, Italy and Japan. The process involves performing for the school’s teaching staff, all of whom are ex-professional dancers themselves. The main focus of the course is Classical Ballet supported by Contemporary Dance as an additional subject, and also includes tuition in Choreography, Spanish Dance, Pilates, Jazz Dance, Drama, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Singing and Contextual Studies. Before joining Central on the degree course Georgia was a
student at Millais School for Girls in Horsham, where she gained 11 GCSE’s. She studied dance at the Horsham School of Dance and the Royal Ballet School. Georgia said: “I am really enjoying my first year at Central School of Ballet - it’s been hard work but fun too. We train at least six hours a day during the week and take classes on Saturday morning as well. You have to be dedicated to make it to the top of this profession and it’s my dream to be a dancer at one of the world’s leading dance companies when I graduate. The training is very challenging, similar to the training of the best athletes, but we are all motivated by the rewards of performing.” Georgia

They were both keen to be involved and this shows a forward thinking approach. We are now looking to roll out this initiative, to all secondary schools in the district, over the course of the year and I will be contacting them about this soon.”
Many parents find coping with a teenager difficult. But for those who are faced with violent behaviour, verbal abuse, stealing, substance misuse and poor school attendance, life at home can become unbearable, often leaving parents feeling unable to cope. Horsham District Council’s Community Safety team runs a free course called ‘Understanding Teenage Behaviour’, which has been designed to empower parents to think about the behaviour of their teenager and manage it through a range of different strategies. Course content can be adapted to meet the needs of the parents attending. Course facilitator, Denise Campbell (pictured), explained: “The course has been put together by a psychologist and uses a cognitive behaviour approach to help parents understand why their child may be acting in a certain way. We then give parents the tools for improving communication, setting boundaries and putting consequences in place. “We find that parents who access the course benefit a lot from being able to share their stories and experiences. Parents feel that they aren’t alone and gain the confidence to tackle the issues they are facing.”

Horsham District Online Michelle Betts The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg once said ‘People influence people. Nothing influences people more than a recommendation from a trusted friend. A trusted referral influences people more than the best broadcast message.’ You can see just how true this is with the recommendation requests we see each day on Facebook from our friends and colleagues. Scrolling through my Facebook feed just before writing this column I saw friends asking for carpet fitter and solicitor recommendations, resulting in a high number of people commenting with their suggestions and experiences. It’s fantastic to see the amount of support for local independent businesses who always receive a high number of referrals in these recommendation threads. Businesses who are based the area and do a fantastic job so people are happy to tell their friends to use them.
Whilst the social media pages for these businesses support the referrals with great reviews and comments, much communication takes place offline as well. Billibiz earlier this month, hosted by the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce (@BilliChamber) brought together a host of local businesses showcasing their services. What stood out though was the thriving business community we have locally as the businesses met each other as old friends whilst setting up their stands. A look at Twitter shows the networking available locally for business people to make new connections and have an opportunity to meet with those they already know well. Do a search on #horsham #sussex #networking and a plethora of tweets pop up from Exel Networking, BNI, WIB Sussex and more giving details of events to attend. I recently attended the Chestnut Tree House (@ChestnutSussex) networking breakfast purely because it popped up in my Twitter feed and looked interesting. The event was really enjoyable with an inspiring speaker and many local business owners to talk to.
Horsham District Council (@HorshamDC) bought together the local businesses from the LEAP funding scheme this week giving them the opportunity to meet and discuss how the funding had helped them grow and develop their businesses. You can also network online using #horshamhour on Wednesdays 8pm - 9pm and #sussexhour on Thursdays 8.30pm - 9.30pm. These hashtag hours are a great way to build your connections but sometimes it’s good to take that networking offline and meet in person. It’s not just about referrals either, many of the local groups have fantastic speakers at their meetings giving you the opportunity to learn as well. Here at ByJove Media I’m continuing my mix of online and offline networking. Whilst my business focuses on online marketing, as a large company once said, ‘it’s good to talk’ and even in today’s connected world, that needs to be face to face sometimes. My top accounts to follow locally on social media this month are: @ SpringboardP, @silvertipfilms, @ RMVProductions and of course, @ TheDistrictPost and @ByJoveMedia!

Smart, Clean and Safe for Lazy Summer Days with Pressure Washing Professionals
Heather joy JoyStars
Summer is definitely on its way and many of us are now getting our gardens ready for those long hot lazy days. However, many of us still have some work to complete to get the gardens looking good and back into shape before then. Oliver Hulme from Pressure Washing professionals commented “We mow the lawn, cut the hedges and weed the flower beds, but what about the patios, paths, driveways and our decking. In many homes these are the most used areas of the garden and yet little time is usually given to how respectable they look and more importantly whether they are safe.” And so, Pressure Washing Professionals was launched in 2016 with an aim to make the drives, patios and other external surfaces cleaner and more importantly safer, in and around the Horsham area and throughout West Sussex. Starting his career in Australia where he was professionally trained to clean shipping containers to a quarantine level, Oliver Hulme started Pressure Washing Professionals upon his return to the UK. “It was one of those ‘Lightbulb’ moments” said Oliver “My niece slipped on decking overlooking a lake at a family home and almost fell into the water. The insight in to how frightening the consequences could have been made me realise that I could easily make it safe by pressure washing it.” He continued “So I did and not only did it then become safe to walk on again, but it also looked so much smarter too.” Pressure Washing Professionals use specialised equipment and two procedures to remove the unsightly and dangerous leaves, algae, dirt and grime that builds up over time, especially in any overgrown areas. The first is pressure washing. Blasting water at high pressure
removes the built up dirt and algae and it is the recommended solution to cleaning a surface that has been neglected or not washed for several years or more. The second option is called ‘soft washing’. This is a less aggressive cleaning method using a chemical mix to remove algae other organisms growing on your patios and driveways. It also removes up to 95% of Lichens (the black spots) and kills weeds for longer lasting results, whilst being safe for plants when applied professionally. We have numerous reasons to have our properties cleaned, the most common being aesthetics. People invest heavily in fitting a
driveway, block paving, patios and even decking on their property and with the correct maintenance this investment can be protected and the lifespan prolonged. In addition, if you are looking to sell, having a clean image hugely increases the ‘curb appeal’ and likewise if you are looking to rent your property, it will be more attractive to potential tenants if it looks loved and looked after. However a more important reason is safety. Paths and patios become exceedingly slippery when wet should algae, grime and mud be allowed to build up, the worst offender being wooden decking. And for commercial ventures, a clean clear pathway is always
essential for the safety of your visitors. But cleaning a drive or patio yourself is a dirty, messy job. Clothes get soaked, mud goes everywhere and it is time consuming, especially when doing it with a household pressure washer. Professional pressure washing however allows a surface to be cleaned quickly and therefore uses less energy and water than other techniques, including manual cleaning techniques. When cleaning a patio with a pressure washer, usually up to 75 percent less water is used when compared to doing the same job with a garden hose. A good saving if you are on a water meter, or if we are
heading for a drought! So Pressure Washing Professionals save people the time and mess, the process is more efficient and the results stand out more. Summing up Oliver said “I love my job. “The look on people’s faces when they see that their patios and drives can look almost as good as when they were laid really makes my day. Many clients do not realise what the impact of a clean smart drive or patio will have on the look and feel of a garden and their surprise is just so great to see.” For Further information on having your drive or patio cleaned, please contact Oliver Hulme on 07432 788468 or info@p-w-p.co.uk

With her career spanning theatre, television, film and radio productions, Maria made her critically acclaimed Broadway debut in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White, winning her the award for best debut performer on Broadway. The heart of Maria’s career has been centred around the love and work of her dear friend Stephen Sondheim and in
May 2010, she was honoured to sing for Stephen at his 80th birthday celebrations in New York and Washington. Currently also directing ‘Stepping Out’ (playing in the West End right now) and with a new musical play, ‘Dusty’ soon to open, Maria is also known for her superb masterclasses and espousal of telling stories through song and dialogue. The show’s 3-week residency at ‘Live at Zedels’ in London received superb reviews: “Friedman and the superbly talented Jason Carr (a Tony nominee in his own right) are terrific together so go and have a wonderful night “On The Town!” Alan Fitter, London Theatre1.com “An illuminating and intimate evening in which Maria Friedman pays tribute to two great composers” Mark Shenton, The Stage “An undiluted pleasure” - Jeremy Chapman. “It is 22nd December 1987 and Dr Mortimore is having a bad day. He is supposed to be reaching the pinnacle of his career: giving a lecture to an international audience of his peers, making the leap to head physician at St. Andrew’s Hospital, bagging himself a knighthood into the bargain. Unfortunately for Dr Mortimore, today is just not going his way. It runs in the family is a frenetic, hectic and madcap play from the pen of critically acclaimed master of farce, Ray Cooney. Mr Cooney is a well-known, award-winning playwright, and his script is perfect fodder for a Manor Theatre extravaganza. The audience of
this effervescent production will witness the ever more fantastic attempts of Dr Mortimore to stop his career, life and reputation from spiralling out of control. Working on this play has been a real labour of love for the cast and crew. First time cast member, Chris Jones (playing the Sergeant), said he felt “very accepted” by Manor, and described the whole process as “fabulous”; while returning member Debra Thurley (who plays Dr Mortimore’s old flame, Jane) said “I’ve absolutely loved it”. Many of the cast are playing outside their own age bracket and channelling their inner child (or parent!). Anna Bird is playing Dr
Bonney’s elderly mother and she explained the challenge “I love it. I think of my mother and there I am”. Meanwhile, Craig Bunce is grappling with his inner teenager to play Dr Mortimore’s illegitimate son, Leslie. Craig explains how he has been “trying to understand an unbalanced punk...what attitudes he has, his emotional state”. Craig has found playing Leslie “a challenge” but says it is “very rewarding” and “a lot of fun” to do. Of course, as a farce, there is a lot of physical comedy to enjoy. Helen White, who plays Matron, has relished getting to grips with this aspect of the role, “it’s the only time I can imagine falling
from a window and walking away afterwards”. Laine Watson, playing Dr Mortimore’s social-climbing wife, Rosemary, has also thoroughly enjoyed discovering her character; describing playing such a single-minded lady as “very free”, adding “I get to thrust my bosom in people’s faces”. This brings us back to one of the key aspects of any farce, comedy. It runs in the family is, above all, extremely funny. Side-splittingly so. The audience watches in mirthful disbelief as Dr Mortimore finds himself trying to hide from his boss, his wife and, most terrifying of all, the St. Andrew’s Boxing Day pantomime!”

Exclusive development in centre of the little village of Cowfold
This small, exclusive development, sits in the centre of the little village of Cowfold but within a few steps of an impressive array of nearby facilities. Each exceptional property will appeal to a number of different types of buyer and naturally boasts well designed kitchens with quality integrated appliances, beautiful bathrooms and
wood floors amongst a list of many other features. Families will love the space on offer in Viscount House; as you might expect it offers a variety of period characteristics. These, however, have been cleverly and sympathetically married to the more contemporary features one comes to expect in a house that is suited to a modern lifestyle. Each of the new properties has
a striking half weather-boarded front as well as differing design styles and features. The Stables is built in an L shape that surrounds its courtyard garden. It will certainly suit a small family but could well be of interest to the down-sizer keen to retain good room size in a smaller property with the benefit of an integral garage. Huntscroft, on the other hand, is designed with a slightly more conventional layout in mind
and comes with the benefit of a kitchen/dining area opening on to a terrace as well as a garden to the rear. A superb opportunity then to buy a beautifully designed house in the centre of this attractive and conveniently located West Sussex village. Call Cubitt & West, Horsham on 01403 269268 for more information about this unique development.

Tennis is a star attraction Tennis An open day held at Billingshurst Tennis Club on Sunday 14 May attracted many visitors including some who signed up to become members on the day. The sunny Sunday afternoon attracted some 70 people to the event including families with all four courts seeing play throughout the event. The men’s team captain, Rob Falkner, and Emily Quin, one of the club’s team coaches was on courts 1-3, providing structured group coaching to the adults while Mark Snelgrove, the 3rd team captain,
ably assisted by some junior helpers, offered encouragement and advice to the many children who turned up to play on the three mini-courts which had been set up for them on Court 4. Refreshments were available in the clubhouse including a vast selection of cakes and treats for refuelling between sessions. “It was a very successful family event for the club and we hope all our visitors enjoyed having a go on court,” said club chairperson, Jo Chambers. “It’s a relaxed way for people to check out the club and find out we’re actually a very friendly group - although pretty
competitive when we get on court! We’re very much looking forward to welcoming our new members and those who join in the following days and weeks ahead.” Billingshurst Tennis Club is situated in Lower Station Road and has three floodlit, all-weather courts, with a fourth court available for booking by the public. There are a number of active groups from ‘drop in’ sessions for children and coaching for all abilities to adult competitions and the ever-popular ‘rusty rackets’ sessions for those who want to enjoy a friendly game or brush up their skills.

Max and Natalie win Horsham’s 10K race Athletics Martin read - Sports Reporter In perfect conditions – pleasantly warm and, off road, soft underfoot after the recent heavy rain, Horsham’s Max Dumbrell led home a strong field in the 10km race, starting and finishing at Horsham Rugby Club. First time winner Max, appropriately wearing Number 1 – adding to his Barns Green Half Marathon win last year - completed in 32 minutes 57 seconds, saying: “This was my first race here and it’s quite a challenging course. I took it fairly steadily because I did a 50 mile bike ride yesterday!” Andrew McCaskill of Lancing took the early lead but came in second while Alex Smith of Horsham Triathlon improved on his time from last year finishing third.” Natalie McCreath from Eastbourne was the fastest lady in 42.19, telling the District Post: “I’ve run here before but this was the first time that I’ve won any race. The Horsham 10K is so well organised! The course was a bit muddy in places but there was a lovely atmosphere with people outside their houses cheering us on.” The outstanding multi-terrain course has two laps, mainly on quiet open roads, including country lanes and a woodland bridleway stretch. Ahead of the main event there was a 1200 metre run around the rugby field for under 16 year olds, won by ten year old Ryan Routhe from Horsham, a long way clear. It was a family show for the Routhes: Ryan’s sister Rylee was first past the post for the Under 9 age group and mother, Miranda, competed in the 10K race. The first girl home in the junior race was 13 year old Amy Mills, making her debut
in the Horsham 10K, but accustomed to running in other Sussex venues. Paul Aylett, Race Director for the fifth time, told us: “As well as our local runners we’ve got entrants from quite far afield and, much as we hate doing so, we’ve had to turn away some people hoping to enter on the day because we’re obliged to stick to our legal limit of 500, it’s proving to be a popular event! We had around 100 juniors competing in their section and about as many marshalls, who’ve all been tremendous – I can’t thank them enough.” Competitors in both the junior race and the 10K benefited from warm ups with Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre’s Maria Colenso and every runner received a race memento, with prizes awarded in the various categories, and all were chip-timed. This year the pacemakers carried flags and ran with those wishing to run in a specific time. Each flag displayed a set number of minutes and runners wishing to complete in that time just had to stay with the pacemaker carrying the appropriately numbered flag. Followers were then shepherded to the finish in their desired time. Post
I took it fairly steadily because I did a 50 mile bike ride yesterday! race the runners celebrated their achievements with refreshments in Horsham Rugby’s Clubhouse, many undauntedly stating their eagerness to return with the intention of bettering their time.

Pulborough Pull Out the Stops Against Steyning BC!
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC With 3 games cancelled due to rain, play was hard to come by until the second half of the week. Friday 19th saw Ivan Salmon play his first round in the Club Champion of Champions, against an opponent from Norfolk BC in Littlehampton. The game was tight from the first end, but Ivan managed to pull ahead on the last 2 ends to snatch his first round win. Saturday 2oth saw Pulborough’s second game in the West Sussex
Bowls League, away against newly relegated Pagham BC. Tipped to do well in the league this season, Pagham kept Pulborough honest from start to finish, with the scores level at halfway! Ivan Salmon and team battled their way to a 13 all draw, whilst skip and Captain, John Brown, with lead, Melvin Green, number 2, Mike Richards and number 3 , Len Adsett, seemed to wake up in the second half of their game, scoring 15 of their 20 points after end 10, to finish 20/15 and snatch top rink for Pulborough. The overall result was a hard-fought 4 points
in the league for Pulborough and level score accross the 4 rinks! In stark contrast to the rest of the week, Steyning BC arrived at the Pulborough green in glorious sunshine on Sunday 21st! 4 triples played 18 ends of fantastic banter and skill on the green, with the home advantage firmly with Pulborough from start to finish. Captain for the day, Malcolm Gray, with Kath Ayling and Paul Smith, had the tightest game, with the break for tea halfway doing them no favours! after being stuck on 15 shots for 6 ends, they finished 16/16. Alan Jordan and team lead from the front to finish with a respectable 22/16 win, whilst Melvin Green and team stepped up the pressure with 25/13. Top rink of the day went to Ivan Salmon, with Hugh Hubbard as lead and George Lewis as number 2, after winning 13 of the 18 ends and white-washing their opponents with a 29/7 final result! The overall score was a convincing 40 shots in Pulboroughs favour. Pulborough next play at home against Norfolk in the BML league on Tues, followed by Pagham at home on Weds, Billingshurst at home from 6pm on Thursday 25th and away against Bognor in the WSBL on Sat 27th from 2pm, spectators very welcome.
What a difference a day makes!
The second League match this season was a washout for Storrringon B. C, in more ways than one. The rain started at the opening of the match and continued unabated, as did the pressure from Arundel B.C. Stuart McGeachie’s team only managed to get the odd winning shot and finished 9 -27 down, although Howard White’s team did not fare much better, with only two ends with multiple
shots, finishing down 14 – 24. Harry Kendall’s foursome tried to save the day, with a 7 shot second end, but could not maintain the impetus and finished 18 – 21 down. This left Peter Newman’s team of Geoff Page, Richard Pettet and Gerry Newman trying to save something for Storrington, but this aim looked as black as the weather with a score of 4 – 15 after 12 ends. A gallant effort from all, over the last 9 ends, limited J. Rose’s Arundel team to 3 shots
while Storrington pulled back 14 shots to end with a draw at 18 = 18. The final score was therefore Storrington 59 shots and 1 League point; Arundel 90 shots and 9 League points. What a difference a day makes! – well two actually! when Storrington played a friendly at home against Chichester B.C. in fine , sunny weather. Paul Leatherbarrow’s team just won end after end, leaving a demoralised opposition with a final score of 32 -2, while Peter Newman’ team behaved in a similar buccaneering manner, winning by the same margin, even if they did allow the opposition to win 4 more shots, the final score being 36 – 6. Howard White’s team appeared to pull effortlessly ahead to finish winning at 24 -6, while Gerry Newman’s team played in a similar manner to finish 17 - 11. The fifth, and final, team, Stuart Mc Geachie’s, obviously did not like the outer rink and had no answer to Chichester’s performance, to lose 10 – 19. This gave a match result of Storrington 119; Chichester 44., and a hope that this is a sign of performance to come.

Mixed match away for Horsham Horsham Bowling Club’s week started with a mixed match away against Homefield Park, played on Monday last week, over 4 rinks. Horsham won 73-59 winning on two rinks, drawing on one rink and losing on one rink. Horsham played their Mens match at home against Horsham Park on Thursday afternoon, a week before the ladies match. A contest that is always competitive, it poured with rain throughout the afternoon and all got thoroughly soaked!! The players foreshortened the match to 18 ends and the result was that Horsham won 85-50, winning on three rinks and losing on one rink. Top rink went to Norman Porter, Denis Tribe, Alan Robertson and Keith Dellard, winning 32-9. On Sunday, by contrast, the home match against Burgess
Hill was played in wonderful sunny conditions. Horsham came out on top winning 8053. They won on three rinks and lost narrowly (17-18) on the fourth rink. Top rink went to Martin Gardner, Jan Barnes and Simon Felton winning 26-8. It has been more than two years since Horsham made the big move from their previous home in Bishopric, now occupied by John Lewis at Home and Waitrose, to Pondtail Road, next to Holbrook Tythe Barn. The club is celebrating with an Open Day on Saturday 3rd June, so all are welcome to come along to see what is on offer, and if you would like to know more about bowls. The competition was started by Dan Mulholland in 1983, when the Cottesmore Veterans were originally formed, and has been played annually as a medal competition. The winner was Tom George with a net 69 followed by Ron Vance and Graham Sinclair. The winner is shown receiving the 34 year old trophy from
New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site
the captain, Alex Henderson. During this competition a hole in one was achieved by Ken Brightwell who was congratulated by the captain after paying his bar bill that was enjoyed by all the Veterans. There was also a parallel competition on the Pheonix 9 hole course that was won by John Oswin followed by Peter Swann and Sam Billcliff. The Cottesmore Veterans Golf Society meets every Tuesday and this was one of a selection of competitions throughout the season.

Hastings won the toss and elected to bat, but soon regretted it, Horsham winning with ease before 4.30, despite the start being delayed by an hour following heavy early morning rain. Horsham’s overseas signing Mika Ekstrom took the first three wickets (for 22) before Will Beer’s 7.4 overs yielded 3-11 as batsmen came and went without making sufficient impact. Elliot Hooper top-scored with 14, only two other batsmen and extras reaching double figures as Hastings remorselessly slid from 48-5 to a paltry 87 all out. Hastings has been a happy hunting ground for Michael Munday and he maintained the trend with 2-15, Manrai Kalsi and Nick Oxley taking a wicket each. Responding, Horsham put on a 31 run opening stand, a sound platform on their way to the comfortable maximum (30) point victory. Ryan Maskell ledthe way with 30, useful contributions coming from Craig Gallagher, Horsham Captain Michael Thornely and Beer. Thornely told the District Post: “The game started in damp conditions and it wasn’t clear what a good score might be, so I wasn’t too upset to lose the toss. We bowled tightly and held our
chances, Tom Johnson taking a good catch. Nobody got going for Hastings and we kept them under pressure. There was plenty of turn for our spinners and not much in the wicket for our seamers, but everyone bowled well.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham return home to face Middleton, whom they beat in the Sussex Cup final last year. Three games into the new season, after bowling out hapless newcomers Ansty for 95 last Saturday and winning with nearly 30 overs to spare, Middleton top the table. But, just five points separate the top six sides. Meanwhile, Roffey’s ground failed to recover from late week deluges causing the abandonment of their clash with East Grinstead, both sides having to be content with 10 points, moving them down the table from their joint leaders’ position. Frustratingly, all of the other four Premier League games produced a winner. This Saturday Roffey travel to Ansty, whom they comprehensively eliminated from the Sussex Cup at the end of April. Ansty have lost all three of their league games to date.

Horsham stun much fancied Cuckfield Horsham 230-5 (50 overs) Cuckfield 170 all out (47.5 overs) Horsham won by 60 runs Horsham 30 points, Cuckfield 6 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham kick-started their league campaign with a strong win, posting a useful score after being inserted by Cuckfield and then bowling tightly. The game, though, started badly for Horsham when opener Matt Green was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by Sussex fast bowler Abi Sakande. And, when Ryan Maskell was pouched at cover and Will Beer caught behind they were 35-2. But, Michael Thornely and Nick Oxley (31) steadied the ship with a 90 run partnership, Thornely carrying on to a fine unbeaten 114, including 5 sixes. A late flurry from Tom Johnson, whose 11 ball 27 featured four maximums, three coming from consecutive balls, took Horsham to 230 from their 50 overs. Between innings Horsham were fairly confident – the wicket was dusty, but with a wet patch from leaking covers. Much depended on Cuckfield’s New Zealand test opening bat
Jeet Raval who scored 149 in the league last week and made 88 against South Africa in his last test. Raval started brightly with four boundaries but was run out for 21 by Oxley, who also pulled off two excellent catches in the deep, one tumbling back by the sightscreen. Former Horsham batsman Joe Ludlow had two lives before departing for 44, the only other Cuckfield innings of note, as they fell further and further behind the run rate. Beer took two wickets, Jonny Whiting and Oxley one each, but it was Horsham’s sixth bowler, newcomer John Aston, formerly with Finchampstead, who caught the eye with 5-22. Horsham skipper Michael Thornely told the District Post: “The wicket was very dry and slow, getting harder and harder to bat on. The turning point was running out Laval, but I couldn’t understand Cuckfield’s tactics – they knew we’ve got two quality spinners in Beer and Munday (who bowled 17.5 overs between them for 2-56), so I was surprised that they didn’t try to score more quickly off our other bowlers.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham travel to Hastings, who, have, thus far, also played two league matches, winning one.
Nuthurst CC v Preston Park Match Report
Gymnasts from Gatwick Flyers Trampoline Club, Billingshurst travelled to Dorking on Saturday 20 May for the annual Club Competition. The event included gymnasts from all of the clubs’ venues. Molly and Lucy Barker were first to compete in the I grade competition, both earning themselves well deserved gold medals in their respective age groups. Molly went on to claim gold overall for topping the scores across all age groups.
William Mansfield and Emma Claydon were up next both performing great routines in the NDP grade 2 to take Silver and Bronze respectively in their respective age groups. With a tough act to follow, up next was Molly McMillan in the NDP 3 grade, 11-12 age group. Molly performed an outstanding routine to not only claim gold in her age group, but gold across all age groups. Sam Claydon, although last
to compete performed another great routine to claim yet another gold in the NDP 4 age 13+. Head Coach, Jacqui Gevaux commented, “We are so proud of all our gymnasts today, they’ve all worked extremely hard, have shown great drive and determination and performed some amazing routines today.” For further information please contact Jacqui Gevaux on tel: 0794 111 7852 or visit www.gatwickflyers.co.uk
Preston Park probably wished that they hadn’t had a Prior engagement last Sunday, as Graham Prior took 5 of their wickets to tear out the top order with a top-notch performance of swing bowling. (11-0-36-5). Put into bat by the Nuthurst Skipper, Bob Samways, The Visitors set out their stall early. There was no holding back, as each batsman in turn swooshed and swatted at Prior and Singh’s opening spells. They soon found themselves on 37-7. Prior bowled Mohsin, trapped Cal LBW and a slow motion diving catch from Stu ‘The Cat’ Catterall saw the demise of Umair for just 2. Ben was caught Keeper, Charlie South as just reward for Raggi (8-1-17-1) , then he turned catcher, as Greenwood snaffled the wicket of Hassan for 5. In came dangerman Khan, who on previous visits to The Nutters had wreaked havoc on the bowlers. He creamed the first delivery that he faced to poor unsuspecting Ollie Prior. Ollie’s hands are probably still stinging two days later, but he was unable to hang on to the searing drive. Weston’s first delivery saw Khan attempt a leg glance, which was gratefully snapped up by South. Khan gone for 1 and a collective sigh of relief from the home side. The only ray of hope was Kashif, who managed a fine 61,
enjoying a partnership with Abdul (27) before being bowled by Prior on his return to the attack. Weston (5-0-22-2) bowled Saeed for 1 and Jonty Greenwood (7-0-22-2) finally bowled Abdul. Graham Prior celebrated his 5 for, by bowling Rahim for 9. Salinger was 3 not out and the innings closed on 141. A very good recovery considering their earlier predicament. The players could have been forgiven for not bothering to come out for the Nuthurst Innings to pay homage to the Tea provided by Ben Hewson. The fruit displays would not have looked out of place on a cruise ship, or Carmen Miranda’s hat. Ok, back to the cricket eventually and it was Jonny Willis and Bob Samways sent out to face some decent pace bowling from Umair and Khan (15-1-601). Both openers looked comfortable, with Samways nurdling his way to 26 in an opening stand of 98. Willis made a dashing 70 before Khan rattled his stumps. Samways was out LBW to Saeed. Raggi Singh batted at number 3, enjoying a battle with Khan, which saw the batsman get the upper hand. Joined by Stu Catterall (9 N.O) the pair saw The Nutters home to victory with 5 overs to spare. Will Morris and David Butcher were the remaining Nuthurst players, who must wait there turn with the bat until next week.
