Duchess of Cornwall to visit South of England Show phil dennett News Editor
Horse lover The Duchess of Cornwall will have plenty to entertain her and the crowd when she attends the South of England Show next week. The huge event at Ardingly features a comprehensive programme of competitions for horse riders and carriage drivers. The Duchess will attend the first day of the three-day countryside showcase on Thursday. The South of England Agricultural Society is celebrating the charity’s 50th year of supporting agriculture and the countryside, since it was established in 1967. Charlie Burgoyne, Chairman of the Society said:“We are honoured to welcome our President, The Duchess of Cornwall to our 50th South of England Show, which will showcase the best of British agriculture, horticulture, forestry, equestrianism, rural crafts and skills as well as delicious, local food and drink on June 8, 9 and 10 . “It’s an extremely special year for the Society and we hope that Her Royal Highness will enjoy some of the spectacular displays that will be featured across the showground. During her visit she will meet some of the farmers and their livestock,
talk to local school children and students from the region’s landbased colleges, as well as officially unveil an exciting permanent record of the Society’s achievements during the last 50 years.” This will be The Duchess’s first official visit to the show and the 25th Royal visit the Society has hosted during the last 50 years. Her Majesty The Queen has been Patron to the charity since her first visit to the show in 1974. The Duchess is committed to supporting local food producers and encouraging children to learn more about where food comes from and to eat healthily. She grew up in the countryside in the village of Plumpton, East Sussex and, at a young age, learned to ride a pony by joining her local Pony Club camps. She continues to have an enduring affection for horses and ponies and has chosen the international animal welfare charity Brooke to be the Society’s chosen charity for the year. The Society will be showcasing its own charitable work and continued support for the next generation throughout the three days of the show with hundreds of students from schools and colleges across the region involved in competitions, exhibits and demonstrations including the prestigious Young Craftsman of the Year exhibition. There will be new entertainment in the main ring this year with The

Schools from Horsham district were among those represented by 11 students who graduated at a Pass Out parade at Crawley. The young people, between the ages of 12-14, are selected from their school to take part in a FireBreak course. They can be selected for a variety of reasons, including to boost their self-esteem and to help them become positive role models within their local communities. Throughout the week they have participated in a variety of activities, such as ladder and hose

drills, wearing breathing apparatus and getting a qualification in HeartStart first aid training. Sean Ruth, Chief Fire Officer, attended the Pass Out and presented the students with awards of achievement. During his speech he said: “It’s brilliant to see everyone here today, we have witnessed some fantastic drills. The students not only had to practise and finesse these skills but they’ve also managed to fit in learning about first aid, a session on consequences and classes on home fire safety.
“I saw a real bond between the instructors and the students, which has been built in just five days. I would like to thank all of the instructors and support teams for the many weeks of hard work it takes to organise a FireBreak course.” Richard Poole, FireBreak Lead Instructor, said: “We gave our students slightly unusual homework this week, and asked them all to help out at home to demonstrate the discipline and teamwork that they’ve learnt throughout the week. FireBreak isn’t just about running out hoses or learning to climb a ladder, it teaches our young people skills and qualities that can be transferred into their school and home lives.” A special mention went to Daniel Tippett, who received an award for ‘Outstanding Individual Achievement’.The FireBreak students represented the following schools: •Oriel High School •Millais School •The Forest School •Hazelwick School •Ifield Community College •The Weald Community School •Thomas Bennett Community College

Summer wine notes Cheers for English quality England is well known for making superb sparkling wines, and it has been showing off its best during English Wine Week. And one of them is a most recent local release, the superb Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine from the highly–rated Albourne Estate. It really is a classic example of the high quality that the English can produce. The estate is pretty excited about this wine and not without reason. For the few who might not know Blanc de Blancs means basically white wine from only white grapes, in this case the classic Chardonnay. The Chardonnay gives this seductive wine a tender touch, without the extra weight from the traditional other two grapes in the classic mix, the red Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This is a fantastic summer sipper, with the balance of a ballet dancer and matching refreshing acidity and seductive elegance. English wines make a great surprise for guests, and they often compete for quality with France, notably RidgeView and Nyetimber in West Sussex but there are many others. Albourne is up there in quality and has another unusual string to its bow. Try the estate’s White
Pinot Noir, an unusual wine in that the skins of the red wine grape are pressed very delicately so that just a hint of pale pink emerges. It is just perfect well chilled on a picnic table. The English are not afraid to tackle something more complex, and Albourne has an enticing Estate Selection blending Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Bacchus. Don’t be deceived by the pale look of the estate’s solo Bacchus. It has great structure but retains a delicacy that marks it as a very attractive wine. With this quartet Albourne is showing just how far English wines have come. Phil Dennett

Talk turns to Turner at museum Farewell and good luck Exhibit
Nicola Moorby (pic by Richard Eaton)
Brenda of Bristol became a media sensation when, hearing of the election on 8 June, she exclaimed ‘not another one!’ But what do you do to escape in the hours leading to the polls closing? Twiddle your fingers, make small talk… or maybe you ought to listen to one of the world’s leading experts on Britain’s greatest watercolour painter Turner. Thanks to the generous support of Toovey’s Auctioneers, the Friends of Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are hosting a brilliant talk by Nicola Moorby; formerly from the Tate Britain, Nicola is a renowned researcher and speaker on Turner. In her hour-long extensively illustrated talk As if by Magic: The Secrets of Turner’s Watercolour Techniques, Nicola uses all of her years of research to explain and explore how Turner created his exceptional effects. She also reveals the tools he uses to paint. If you thought the History of the World in 100 Objects was fascinating, then you will love this talk, as it tells the story behind Turner’s tools and materials. Before the talk starts, enjoy a glass of wine amongst convivial conversation - after the raucous barracking of electioneering, it is a perfect civilised antidote. After all the election pledges (that you may or may not believe), what is even better is that all the money raised through the ticket sales will go towards the Friends of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery Watercolour Fund – thanks to the support of Toovey’s of Washington. Started last year, the Fund has been used to acquire great works of watercolour art by some of Turner’s contemporaries and later artists. Unfortunately Brenda from Bristol probably lives too far away for an evening talk - but locals
have no excuse. Nicola Moorby’s As if by Magic is a great way to spend 8 June from 7-9pm. Tickets are £10 each, including wine – please note that there are limited places at The Capitol, Horsham so do book now to avoid disappointment! The Friends of Horsham Museum
Students said a fun-packed farewell to their school. The Weald school staff at Billingshurst said goodbye to their year 13 students. Students celebrated their time at The Weald by enjoying a fun afternoon on the field. They started off their day with an emotional leaving assembly where they had the chance to reminisce about their experiences and fond memories of the school and sixth form. Students and staff dressed up in imaginative fancy dress costumes to celebrate, some including 80s disco outfits, Mexicans and Greek gods. The afternoon included an inflatable assault course, a
gladiator ring and ice creams. The weather did not dampen their spirits; students were extremely enthusiastic throughout the afternoon and got “stuck in”. Both staff and students felt emotional but happy by the end of the day. The school said “We had a fantastic day with our leaving year 13 students and it was a day full of memories and laughter. The annual tradition of students and staff dressing up was upheld with some absolutely brilliant costumes. Despite the unreliable weather, we had great fun on the inflatables. We now wish all our year 13 students the very best in their exams.”

Fascinating lecture on visual culture Farlington School was delighted to welcome Dr Jorella Andrews, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, to deliver a Vive Lecture and her talk really did not disappoint. Dr Andrews began with some very topical images from the recent media, familiar to many. These involved snapshots of people, linked by some tenuous thread to the dreadful events on Westminster Bridge last month. She demonstrated the difference that a couple of seconds can make to a captured expression and the subsequent narrative that is formed and sometimes, justly or not, goes viral. Whilst we read expressions and situations visually, all the time, we can easily be misled if we fail to bring our intellect to bear in their interpretations. Dr Andrews challenged our notions of contemporary art. She talked about how homo sapiens - the wise man - is replaced by homo imago: since the 1960s there has been a radical shift in how humans should be understood as images of self. In an age where we are surrounded by digital culture, there are definite challenges in existing with endless visual data to process. Our eyes can receive immeasurably more than our brains can deal
with. Learning to understand and appreciate the visual culture of our times will bring us to a better understanding of inter-relationships - cultures, genders, politics and much more. We were encouraged to look back at some of Andy Warhol’s work: namely ‘The screen tests’. Made in his Manhattan studio, he filmed a whole series of sitters who had no props, no script and no encouragement. The unease evident was greater for those viewing the screen tests later: referencing the whole notion of the distressed image. Often, when we watch otherwise silent excerpts on YouTube, music has to be added to make viewing more palatable. We know that historical paintings give us a viewpoint chosen by the artist or their patron and yet, somehow, when it comes to digital imagery we can unwittingly fall into the trap that seeing is believing. Surrounded by images that misrepresent, one frieze-frame out of context may completely skew what we think is going on. We are immersed in an image war. Art history helps us learn better how to think about images. As a school, Farlington definitely values the importance of acquiring strong visual literacy.

Enjoying a session
Children of all ages with different disabilities are back enjoying Friday nights cycling together in Broadbridge Heath. About 30 children regularly venture onto the athletics track at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, where they enjoy riding a range of the latest adapted cycles. The club, called Horsham Wheels for All, is running every Friday from 4.30pm to 6pm throughout the summer. Organisers West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council want even more children, parents and carers to come down and enjoy the fun. West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure
and Highways, Bob Lanzer, said: “This is a fantastic event every Friday which helps children with disabilities to grow in confidence using adapted bikes. “The great thing is we have plenty more bikes for more children to come down with their parents or carers to have a go. “Children come from far and wide already to take part. It would be fabulous to see some more.” A team of trained instructors are always on hand to organise the rides and help children get to grips with the different bikes. There are four different adapted bicycles to choose from. They are Wheelchair bikes where you sit in the wheelchair on the front with
someone doing the pedalling behind, Recumbent bikes where you sit back and pedal with your legs, tandem bikes with someone on front and you sat pedalling behind and hand pedal bikes, where you sit back and pedal with your hands. Also there are plenty of mountain bikes and hybrid bikes available to ride around on. All you have to do is pick a bike and set off around the track. Helmets are all provided. Sessions cost £5 every Friday, or £4 if you have a Horsham Leisure Access Card or Compass Card. Horsham District Council’s Community Recreation Officer, Paul Taylor, said: “It is a sociable event. “Parents and carers can come and talk and it is a chance to have some fun. “You don’t have to book, you can just turn up on the day.” He added: “Some of our cyclists start on four wheels, but have now progressed on to a two-wheeled bike. “One of the people that came along was 14 years-old, and had never been on a bike before. “He first came to us in September. “His mum bought him a threewheel trike, and now together they cycle to Tesco to do the weekly shop and back again. “So the change he has made by learning to be able to ride the bike is fantastic.”
Royal award for firm A Pulborough computer firm named Britain’s best rural business in a prestigious awards ceremony has now been awarded a Royal Warrant by Her Majesty The Queen. Landmark Systems Ltd, was informed by Buckingham Palace that it had received the Royal seal of approval. The award has come hot on the heels of Landmark’s victory at the CLA and Amazon-backed Rural Business Awards, where it was crowned overall Champion of Champions at a glittering ceremony in 2016. Landmark provides accounting and property management software, including the KEYPrime brand, to farms and estates to help them run their businesses effectively. The company has been a supplier to Royal farms and estates for ten years. Landmark’s managing director Nigel Parsons said staff at the company were “hugely honoured” to have been given the warrant, which is in place for the next five years. He said: “I am proud of the public recognition it conveys on our team made up of sales, administration, training, support and development staff who are the company. They work hard to deliver a quality product and service either at Pulborough, in West Sussex, where we are based, or out on farms and estates all over the UK. It is a very special accolade for us as software is not easily assessed and has to be
judged on what it delivers over time in a business sense, and not on what it tastes of or looks like! “As an SME, to be appointed to the family of Royal Warrant holders is an unparalleled seal of approval. It comes in Landmark’s thirtieth year of trading and in a year in which we are also the CLA Rural Business Award Champion of Champions we could not ask for a better way to celebrate.”

It is so rewarding.” Another comments: “The amount of times I hear people say that and it really kind of upsets me.” Answering the myth ‘It’s all about working with old people’ one person says “Some of the people that I care for are considerably younger than myself.” Another responds: “You

Help catch fake cops Residents are being asked to help catch fraudsters who pretend to be police officers. Sussex Police is warning people to be alert after a number have fallen victim to the con. Between May 9 and May 16 police received six reports which are being linking together. The victims received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer, saying that they are carrying out an investigation into bank clerks at local branches. The caller goes on to instruct the victim to go to the bank and withdraw money, and then to return home where a Police Officer will stop-by to collect the money for forensic investigations. Two of those contacted did not hand over any cash, realising this was fraud but four of the victims unfortunately did. An 83-year-old woman gave £5,890, an 83-year-old man handed over £7,500, a third man aged 85 handed over £4,500 and an 87-year-old man gave the suspects £5,000. After an operation officers in Brighton and Hove arrested an 18-year-old man from London on suspicion of fraud by false representation. These offences follow on from another incident that
took place in Chichester earlier in the month during which an 85-year-old woman handed over £12,500 to scammers using exactly the same methods. Detective Inspector Andy Wolstenholme said: “The police would never contact people and ask them to withdraw or hand over cash to officers. The people carrying out these frauds are deliberately targeting those they think are vulnerable, so please do look out for your friends, family and anyone you feel may be at risk by passing out this message, to help prevent further people falling victim to this type of fraud. “If ever you doubt a telephone caller is genuine, simply hang up the phone. If speaking to callers at the door, always ask for ID and satisfy yourself that it is genuine before dealing with that person. “We want to hear from you if you have received similar calls to these mentioned above or have any information which could help our investigation. Descriptions of those who have attended to collect money differ. You can contact police by calling us on 101 or email 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Signature.”

Dancers share limelight with Pasha
Dancers from Horsham were among those who appeared with a Strictly Come Dancing Star. Local dance school ‘Fi Steps’, from Horsham and Crawley, supported Pasha Kovalev in his current tour called “Let’s Dance the Night Away” at the Capital Theatre, Horsham. The 22 strong Fi Steps team of dancers, aged between 5-20 years, performed two routines. During
one they were joined on stage by Pasha and his dance partner Anya Garnis, who performed the “Gangnam Style” dance with the young performers. The Fi Step dancers had the amazing opportunity to run a rehearsal with Pasha, have photos taken with him, with the finale of dancing with him on stage, with the full encouragement of the audience behind them. It was a fabulous
evening enjoyed by all. Fi Steps dancers are now preparing for their next performance where they will be appearing on the Indigo stage at the O2 in June. For further details about Fi Steps school of Dance, and to find out more about their yearly school show performed in September, please visit the website www. fisteps.com .

Register now for Charity’s South Downs fundraising walk 2017
Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC) is delighted to announce that registration to the Arundel to Brighton (A2B) walk is now officially open, and is calling for people to get involved. The Charity aims to raise £30,000 from the event, which is now in its fifth year, in order to launch a new Outreach Service to provide support to those families who are unable to attend sessions or need extra help at home. This service will include home visits, as well as leveraging digital audio visual technology to allow families to participate virtually in sessions and benefit from online
video tutorials. This will also enable the Charity’s staff to go in to its children’s next schools to meet with teachers and to support their transition, as well as helping their new teachers to understand how they might be able to better support children. The fundraising walk begins at 7.30am on Saturday 16 September at Arundel Castle and follows the South Downs to Devil’s Dyke, Brighton, over a 35k undulating course of beautiful scenic countryside. The walk brings together people of all abilities and ends with a celebratory meal at the finish line. For those who want to raise
money, but participate over a shorter distance, there’s also a 12km route which ends at Kithurst Hill. Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager of DVLCC, said: “This event is very special to us as it brings people together, including some of our families, to enjoy the beautiful South Downs and raise vital money for the Charity. This year also marks our Founder – Dame Vera Lynn’s – 100th birthday. “The work of the Charity has helped more than 500 families with children under five years old who have cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties. The Charity gives these children an amazing start, by offering an innovative and essential early intervention service to help the whole family, and if we can raise the target of £30,000, we will be able to bring our services directly into the homes of those who need it.” Registration for the A2B walk costs £36 per adult and £11 per child, and all proceeds will go directly to the charity. For teams of three adults, there’s a special rate of £100 per team. All walkers are asked to aim to raise a minimum of £100, or £400 collectively as a team of three. For more information on the A2B walk, or to register to participate, please visit: https://dvlcc.org.uk/events/ a2bwalk-event. Citizens Advice thanks local volunteers for making a difference to people’s lives Central and South Sussex Citizens Advice, which operates the Citizens Advice service from various locations in West Sussex - including its centre in Horsham, is celebrating the inspirational volunteers who dedicate their time to solving people’s problems and making a difference to their lives. To mark Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June), the charity is shining a spotlight on the remarkable contribution of its team of 274 volunteers, who give up upwards of 1,900 hours each week to help people find a way forward - a resource worth more than £1.25 million. In the last year, Central and South Sussex Citizens Advice has helped more than 23,000 people with nearly 44,000 problems. The charity’s volunteers have played a crucial role in ensuring people get the advice and support they need to enable them to get on with their lives. They have helped to stop families becoming homeless and supported people to challenge unfair benefit decisions. They have made more than £521,000 for clients and helped to get almost £70,000 in debts written off. This kind of help can relieve huge amounts of stress and really change lives. Locally, Citizens Advice offers a wide range of voluntary roles, including advisers, campaigners, receptionists, administrators,
trustees and marketers. One of the charity’s volunteers, Marcia, has been an adviser in a local Citizens Advice team for twelve years, having previously been the head of a primary school. She said: “I get a huge amount of personal satisfaction from volunteering here. I like talking to people and being useful. It’s a way challenging the brain, of being involved in what’s going on in the world, and of using my time to help someone else.” Kevin, a student who volunteers for Citizens Advice as part of the University of Sussex Law School’s Access to Justice programme, said that he gets “immense satisfaction” from volunteering for the organisation, as well as pride from “showing empathy and understanding, calming an agitated client or just giving dignity to someone who feels they may not otherwise get it”. Julie Martin, CEO at Central and South Sussex Citizens Advice, explained: “It’s thanks to our amazing volunteers that we’re able to continue making such a huge difference to people’s lives. Our volunteers are extremely committed. They give up time for free to help people who may be going through problems to get back on their feet, as well as providing a valuable contribution to the shaping of the service. “Volunteering also brings its own rewards and is a great way to
meet new people and learn new skills. If you can spare a few hours each week, we’d love to hear from you.” Nationally, Citizens Advice relies on 23,000 volunteers, who help provide support in 2,900 locations across England and Wales - helping 2.7 million people every year. Thanks to the contribution the charity’s volunteers play within local Citizens Advice, two out of every three clients have their problem solved and four out of five say the advice they were given improved their lives. To find out more about volunteering at Citizens Advice Horsham or any of the charity’s other centres in West Sussex, contact volunteer@westsussexcab.org.uk.

William Stovell releases final home at Waterhouse Mews
Being the potential 5th generation local builder, William Stovell always hoped to follow in his family’s footsteps but to do so with his own identity, incorporating his passion for creativity and design. The outcome is the launch of William Stovell Developments, property developers with design at the forefront of every decision. The combination of Will’s business and design skills and his father’s 40 years’ building experience has resulted in the completion of the company’s
first scheme, four outstanding new homes at Waterhouse Mews, Horsham. “I’ve always wanted to have my own business that incorporates creative elements so that I can utilise my flair for design, but to do so with my family’s practical building experience and to carry on the tradition,” says William. The former Victorian waterworks buildings which date from 1886 were rich with historical features which William Stovell Developments were keen to retain rather than demolish and replace.
The conversions have been sympathetically designed, taking care to incorporate the character of the buildings for future generations to enjoy. “Because Waterhouse Mews was pretty much a blank canvas internally, we looked very carefully at how to get the best out of the buildings, how to make the most of the exposed beams and brickwork and to utilise every inch of space. We’ve also added touches of luxury which you wouldn’t normally see, like televisions in the bathrooms, multi-room audio systems and glass panelled floors. “For us it’s all about creating a lifestyle, not just a home. They are houses to enjoy, socialise and have fun in as well as having practical features throughout. I like to think they have style and substance.” With two of the four properties let and the third already sold in its first viewing, the team are busy finalising the last available two bedroom mews house, No. 4, ready for its sales launch via Henry Adams in Horsham with a guide price of £350,000. For more information on Waterhouse Mews and to register your interest prior to the launch of the final home, get in touch with Alexander Harvey at Henry Adams on 01403 253271 or email alexander.harvey@henryadams. co.uk.

Barry Steele and Friends will be performing at The Hawth, on 15 June, in The Roy Orbison Story, an upbeat and contemporary tribute to the Big “O”. Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading tributes to Roy Orbison and The Traveling Wilburys, Barry has stunned audiences, across the globe, with his uncanny similarity and ability to authentically revive the exquisite toe-tapping sound of this music giant. Barry is backed in this all live multi- media show with not only a fabulous band and musicians, but a big screen, featuring both video and images from the life and times of Roy Orbison, interspersed with facts and information about a man who is considered to be one of the best singers the world has ever known. son Wesley, as well as having performed a duet with Bill Dees, the co-writer of many of Roy’s songs. Barry’s vision is clear, to deliver the songs to Roy Orbison fans in the same manner in which they were originally performed: “Orbison’s songs not only have wonderful melodies and tunes, the lyrics are some of the most sublime ever written. Not only does the music take you back in time, the songs can make you happy, sad and emotive all at the same time. “Orbison is known as a balladeer, but he also recorded and performed rocky and contemporary songs. His songs are quite simply timeless”. Peformance: Thu 15 June, 7.30pm, The Hawth Theatre. Tickets: £22.50, available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth. co.uk

The Potted Garden – Roses - June 2017
Having a perfumed garden in an excellent way of improving well-being and making your outside space feel even more special. Not often thought of as a container plant, but an excellent option for small gardens, is the ever popular scented rose. Roses are easy to grow and will thrive in most pots providing there is good drainage and they are watered regularly. All you need is a sunny location and enough room for a large container and you can transform a patio, terrace or balcony into a floral retreat full of colour and fragrance. Choosing the right rose is
important – compact varieties with a long flowering season grow well in containers – they just need a sturdy, good sized pot to live in full of good quality potting compost. Roses need regular feeding which will increase the amount of blooms they produce and will also improve their resistance to pests, although some roses will require spraying to combat aphids and mildew Pruning is essential as it shapes the plant and helps control insects and disease and it’s also important to remove dead heads as this improves flowering over a longer period of time.
You should re-pot every two to three years to refresh the soil and if your rose isn’t flower as much as it used to then transplant it to a larger container. If you are replacing old roses with new ones, ensure that all the old soil is removed and replaced with fresh. The Royal Horticultural Society’s top five roses for containers are … Laura Ford – a patio climber that has lots of small, double, deep yellow flowers and grows up to 3m high Magic Carpet – a groundcover variety that has pretty, wide, semi-double flowers in mauve, lilac and lavender with a light spicy scent. Nice Day – a patio climbing rose with gorgeously scented coral-pink flowers that bloom repeatedly throughout the summer and autumn and grows to 2m high Robin Redbreast – a miniature rose with dark green foliage and bright red, single flowers with yellow centres that produces good rosehips in the autumn. Sweet Dream – a past Rose of the Year short, standard bushy rose that has apricot-peach flowers with masses of petals For an instant rose garden that you can enjoy throughout the summer buy a selection of different sized pots, plant them with a varieties of roses and then place them together in a group. Simple but stunning.

League success for Pulborough see them flying high Pulborough hosted Norfolk BC for the latest round of the mixed BML league on Tues 23rd May. Play started at 2pm, with 2 league triples and a friendly taking to a very lush green under blue skies. It became evident, after just a couple of ends, that the home advantage was going to play out, with Pulborough pulling ahead from the outset on the 2 league rinks. The friendly rink, skipped by Melvin Green, looked to be holding their own until half way, when their opposition got a feel for the green to finish 6 shots ahead. Skip, Chris Etherington, with Julie Day as lead and Steve Meadowcroft as 2, scored a 5 on end 6 and didn’t look back, finishing with an impressive 24/13 scoreline. Top rink of the day went to Paul Day, with Jane Gray as lead and Alan Jordan as 2. An impressive 7 on end 9 was the final nail in the coffin of the Norfolk side, after not scoring on the first 4 ends they finished 17 shots behind, with 14 shots to Pulborough’s 31! The final score was the full 6 league points to Pulborough and 55/27 scoreline.
With a couple of cancellations, the next game was away at Bognor in the West Sussex Bowls League on Saturday afternoon. With the wind whipping across the exposed green, Pulborough made a slow start with just 9 shots in hand at half way. By full time, 3 of the 4 rinks managed to finish in front of the Bognor players. Ivan Salmon and team had a tough game but managed 16/13, Len Adsett, with George Lewis, Hugh Hubbard and Melvin Green, had a 10 shot lead on end 10, only to struggle in the second half, finishing just 5 shots ahead. Top rink of the day went to Vice Captain, Paul Day, with Mick Ralph as lead, Paul Smith as 2 and Steve Adsett as 3, 29/17. With 3 rink wins, Pulborough can claim 8/10 league points for this round in the competition. The Cawston Tourists return to Pulborough on Bank Holiday Monday from 2pm, followed by a home game against Hotham on Weds, another WSBL game at Arundel on Sat 3rd and a friendly at home against Horsham on Sunday from 2pm, spectators and new members welcome.
Horsham Bowling Club weekly report
Collyer’s students and staff who organised and took part in charity badminton and table tennis tournaments have raised over £50 for the college’s Tanzania Project, which supports health and education projects in the Morogoro region of the country. Collyer’s Head of Sports Academy, John Burroughs explained: “The idea of the charity badminton and table tennis competitions was to raise some money for the college’s Tanzania project, while also promoting healthy, active sport at Collyer’s. “The tournaments were a huge success. Massively competitive at times, but also great fun. Everyone had a terrific time!” The Table tennis winners were Linus Li and Matt Ward, with the Badminton prize going to Oscar Lui and Sam Dallas. Clare Ruaux, who helps students to manage the RCU (college’s student council) was de-
lighted: “Massive thanks to Laura Hemsley and maths teacher Peter Mattock, who, with help from John Burroughs and maths’ James Waller, worked so hard to make

fun. “I really appreciate all the help and support for from members of staff and students who supported this event. A special thank you to Peter, John and James for their help!” Maths teacher Peter Mattock said: “Laura organised the event brilliantly, she has been an absolute superstar, not just in co-ordinating this, but also in co-ordinating the badminton club which runs in the enrichment slot every week. “In addition to all of the students who took part, several members of staff also competed. We were all particularly impressed by Sue Tye’s badminton prowess.”” Vice Principal Melanie Russell said: “Big thanks to Laura, Peter, John and James. What a great way to raise money for such a worthwhile charity! Well done everyone!”
On Tuesday, Horsham Bowling Club ladies played their game against Horsham Park ladies, although only able to field two triples, not three. They won on both rinks.... Fran Baillie, Irene Gettins and Jan Barnes with a score of 29 -7 and Anna Bishop, Barbara Meyer and Sheila Fenton won 26 -14. Horsham is attracting key County matches to its new ground now and two more were held during the week, in fine weather. One of the most enjoyed contests of the year is the men’s away match at Worthing Pavilion, who hosted 6 full rinks for us on Friday, the first leg of the Friendship Cup. Such a large match needed to draw upon many members and meant introducing several new members. Despite this, they all played gallantly and lost by
only 14 points, 127 - 113. The top rink was Ray Coburn, Frank Hall, Tony Bacot and skip Doug Whetstone, scoring 24-11. A fine effort to take into the second leg at home on Sunday, 16 July! On Sunday 28 May , we played the return mixed match away at local rivals, Horsham Park. We dodged the downpour half way through the match and came through slightly damp! We came away with a win 101 - 83, winning on three rinks and losing on two. Top rink went to Anna Bishop, Mike Pearson, Allan Robertson and skip Darren Reynolds with a score of 29 - 10. Don’t forget all are welcome to the grounds on Pondtail Road for the Horsham Bowling Club Open Day, on Saturday 3rd June. See www.horsham-bowling-club.co.uk or call 01403 265730.

Horsham win the cup again – four on the trot! attacking, Liam Brady adding a try, but they were unable to break through again until they were lifted by evergreen hooker Matt Stone coming on in the 54th minute for his final first team performance, 20 years after his first appearance. Horsham win the cup again – four on the trot! Saturday May 27 – Bob Rogers Cup Final Horsham 57 Hove 3 Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Hove scored first, in the open-
ing minutes at East Grinstead, but that was their only success, Horsham completing an overwhelming win at a canter. And, remarkably, Horsham’s fine victory confirms the town’s hold on four Sussex cups – both the Men’s and Ladies’ hockey cups, the cricket cup, picked up by Horsham at Hove, and now,
again, the rugby trophy. In the rugby final both sides had senior players missing so the game started with uncertainty as to the outcome, especially as there had been a seven week gap since the end of the league season. Horsham, though, quickly responded to Hove’s early penalty with a Canice Gonzague try, converted by
Horsham’s Ekstrom, Beer and Oxley silence Middleton est Premier League score of the day - despite late wickets from Horsham’s overseas player Mika Ekstrom. But, Horsham pulled off a memorable win thanks to a superb unbeaten fourth wicket stand between Sussex’s Will Beer and 17 year old Nick Oxley. Horsham took a prized wicket in the first over when Oxley caught Angus Robson high overhead in the gulley, the former Leicestershire
Our plan was to get to 160 needed off the last 20 overs and that worked out well! Saturday May 27 - Sussex Premier League Middleton 288-9 (50 overs) Horsham 289-3 (49 overs) Horsham won by 7 wickets Horsham 28 points, Middleton 11 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After being put in to bat Middleton posted 288-9 - the high-
player slashing wildly. Middleton, though, carried on undeterred, their next five batsmen making useful contributions, evergreen Captain Sean Heather notching up an impressive 88. Ekstrom returned 6-71 from his 10 over allocation, John Aston taking 2-33 and Michael Munday 1-49. Horsham were missing Tom Johnson and Jonny Whiting, both playing in the Sussex Rugby Cup Final and George Garton in the
England Lions squad and soon found themselves 28-2. And at 63-3 with not too much batting to come the pavilion pundits feared the worst, especially when a further 191 runs were still needed at the half way stage of Horsham’s innings. However, seven Middleton bowlers were unable to make further inroads as Beer and Oxley calmly eroded the demanding asking rate with an exceptional unbroken 226 run partnership, Beer’s 142 and Oxley’s 78, getting them home with an over to spare. Ebullient Horsham Captain Michael Thornely told the District Post: “50 overs is a long time and the wicket was good but that was a lot to chase down - Beero masterminded our excellent win! That’s the best I’ve seen him play and Nick Oxley batted with great maturity, too.” Beer said: “I got an unbeaten 99 for Sussex seconds during the week and felt in good nick. Our plan was to get to 160 needed off the last 20 overs and that worked out well!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit Roffey for an always closely fought derby for bragging rights in the town’s cricket circles. Horsham are eager to reverse the drubbing they suffered on their last trip to the Crawley Road ground.
skipper Tom Johnson, followed by a try from the combined persistence of Jonny Whiting and Richard Tredgett before Gonzague’s speed got him over the line again. By half time Horsham had further increased their lead – to 26-3 – after Gonzague notched up his hat trick, maximised by Johnson. On resumption Horsham continued
line three times in the last quarter of an hour, Joe Wilde, Jeff Carvell and then Johnson all getting over, Horsham’s nine tries boosted by six Johnson conversions underlining their supremacy. Understandably delighted, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “A very pleasing performance, we played at a tempo that suited us, creating many opportunities, some of which were missed, but the effort and work rate was particularly pleasing throughout – our very young back three – Gonzague, Palmer and Jordan Bell were a constant threat with mature performances.” Horsham now take a well earned break before commencing training ahead of their return to league action in September.
Roffey thrash Ansty to go top Saturday May 27 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 270-8 (50 overs) Ansty 102 all out (36.4 overs) Roffey won by 168 runs – Roffey 30 points - Ansty 8 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey completed a comprehensive win on their return to Ansty after eliminating the struggling Premier League newcomers from the Sussex Cup in the first week of the season. Winning the toss and unusually batting first, Roffey reached 66-1 before slumping to 111-5 but the strength of their batting line up again paid dividends, enabling them to post a substantial target. Jibran Kahn’s 63 contained 7 fours, five other batsmen chipping in with double figure scores before skipper Matt Davies, batting at seven, top scored with an unbeaten 78, including the only six of the game. Getting 271 runs was always likely to be too demanding for Ansty - they were dismissed cheaply in their two previous games, and soon subsided to 37-6. Roffey were without recent Scotland debutant Stuart Whittingham but Leigh Harrison and George Fleming made early inroads. A partial recovery was
staged when Jake Wilson and William Wright each made 26 but Ansty had no answer to Roffey’s accuracy, eight maiden overs reining them in as they stuttered to 102 all out with more than 13 overs unused. Harrison and Fleming finished with three wickets apiece, Luke Barnard and Ben Manenti, following his outstanding 2015 season, returning from Australia as Roffey’s overseas player, taking two each. Matt Davies told us: “We took first use of the wicket because we didn’t relish chasing too many on it and although we had a mid innings wobble the feeling was that 160 – 170 would probably prove sufficient.” Roffey now top the table with 98 points, two clear of East Grinstead and Horsham. Elsewhere, much fancied Cuckfield were beaten by Hastings, Preston Nomads overcame Bexhill and East Grinstead saw off Brighton & Hove. Bexhill and Ansty are the bottom two clubs. This weekend is a big home event for Roffey – on Saturday they play Horsham in what is certain to be a strongly contested league game and on Sunday they welcome top Kent side Blackheath in Round 3 of the National KO Cup. Blackheath won the competition in 2015 when Horsham Captain Michael Thornely was in their ranks.
