Horsham Park hosts 4th Race for Life fundraiser in aid of Cancer Research UK On Sunday 4 June, 775 participants gathered to take part in Horsham’s Race for Life fundraiser, in aid of Cancer Research UK. The total raised for the charity is said to be around £58,000. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of women-only events raising money for research into all 200 types of cancer. In 2015/2016, the charity put £404m into funding research projects. Race for Life is one of many fundraiser initiatives. Others include, charity walks and challenges, such as dryathlons, and special events. Organiser, Helen Curtis, said: “It was a beautiful sunny day and the atmosphere was amazing. Such a good spirit of togetherness in Horsham and a lovely location. “We’re grateful to everyone who took part. Every step and every penny will count towards helping our scientists beat all cancers sooner. “What we need now is for everyone to return the money they raised as soon as possible.” Scola Dondo youtube star and Horsham resident said: “The 5k event was so much fun. The atmosphere was so inspiring and hearing some of the stories reminded me why I’m doing all these races. Cancer is such a scary thing and it’s possible to do something about it. I want to do my part in helping to stop what ruins so many lives.”

Terry remembers and looks for more help St Catherine’s Hospice is looking for dynamic individuals to help guide its future direction and govern the organisation by joining its voluntary Board of Trustees. The hospice provides expert end of life care to local people at its hospice buildings, and more often, in the comfort of people’s own homes across Sussex and Surrey. Now, with an ever increasing need for its care and a new hospice building on the horizon, the local charity is looking for energetic individuals who can help lead them through the exciting challenges ahead. Terry O’Leary is St Catherine’s Chair of Trustees and recently retired from his job in global banking to dedicate more time to the hospice. Here, he explains why it’s so important to him, that he, alongside a strong Board of Trustees, who are central to the leadership of the charity, are there to guide St Catherine’s. Terry said: “Three years ago, my wife Jenny died in the care of St Catherine’s, having been diagnosed with terminal cancer some 10 months earlier. It was my experience then that inspired me to volunteer as Chair of Trustees. I think about Jenny all the time but she was very much in my

mind when I joined hospice colleagues for something called a Schwartz Round recently, a therapeutic process which allows hospice staff to safely and confidentially share difficult experiences and emotions with one another. At this session, a doctor and senior nurse spoke candidly and I remember someone saying ‘’People think we’re saints, but really, we’re only human.’’ Actually, I still think they’re saints! As I listened, my mind went back to March 2014 when I spent a final week with Jenny at the hospice, and we directly experienced the care and compassion St Catherine’s provides. People think of St Catherine’s as a place where people die, and of course it is. But it’s as much, if not more, about living than it is about death. It’s about enabling people with a terminal illness to make the best of the months or weeks they have and then when death is inevitable, to as far as possible, be without pain and discomfort. Death is always distressing, it doesn’t have to be undignified. That is what St Catherine’s gave Jenny and myself, and perversely, in many ways, our final months together were some of the best of our 45 years. We both thought

when she received her diagnosis that we’d just sit around until she died. Far from it. With St Catherine’s help and encouragement, we enjoyed Jenny’s final months much more than we ever thought possible. Death, of course, eventually came, as peaceful and dignified as it could have been, but still greatly distressing for me and Jenny’s family and friends. Dealing with the distress of death is something we all have to face, but our colleagues at St Catherine’s deal with the distress of someone’s death every day, of every week, of every year. I consider myself privileged to contribute to St Catherine’s as Chair of Trustees. I’m also somewhat overwhelmed when I think of my predecessors, especially those who had the vision and the courage to found the hospice in the 1970s. And when I look to the future I know that we’ll need similar vision and courage. So if you have the kind of vision and courage St Catherine’s needs, I urge

Horsham in Bloom’s Summer Competition Season is here and we’re inviting all you keen, local gardeners to get involved! Whether you’re just doing your bit to keep Horsham looking beautiful for the wider community, or you’ve a grand front garden and impressive hanging baskets; a small plot with some handsome gnomes; allotment, or no garden at all, we’ve got a competition category for you. The big news this summer is we’ve introduced a new award; Growing Without Gardens is designed to recognise anyone who enjoys growing without the use of a conventional garden space. Tribute to incredible volunteers

Volunteers like Sandra welcome A hospice has been paying tribute to its “incredible” volunteers this week as part of national event. St Catherine’s Hospice is shining a light on the significant achievements of its incredible volunteers during national Volunteers Week, which has been running this week. Each year, more than 800 volunteers help St Catherine’s deliver their expert end of life care and support. Coming from across Sussex and Surrey, volunteers take on 42 varied roles from; gardeners and charity shop assistants, to complementary therapists, caterers, and even a caricature artist! Between them, they volunteer more than 47,000 hours a year and in 20162017 alone provided comfort and

care by: Making 114,400 cups of tea Painting 130 sets of patient’s nails Giving 144 meditation sessions to help patients’ manage their illness Driving patients to and from St Catherine’s on 110 minibus journeys Processing more than 32,000 sales in the hospice’s 16 charity shops, helping raise vital funds so St Catherine’s can be there for people when life comes full circle. Sandra Cramp is just one of the hospice’s many volunteers. She joined St Catherine’s as a volunteer Hospice Host just over a year ago, and alongside other volunteering colleagues, has helped welcome 8,734 relatives to St Catherine’s across the last year. Sandra said:

“I thoroughly enjoy working at the hospice and have met some very inspiring and friendly people. There’s always people to guide and support us and I feel privileged to belong to such an outstanding local charity.” To thank volunteers for their incredible contributions, St Catherine’s is hosting a volunteers award evening at Tilgate Golf Club on Wednesday 7 June to recognise volunteers who have reached five, 10, 15 or 20 years voluntary service with the local charity. This project is something I have been working on for a while, and I really want to see it progress.’ William Harrington Lewin, an IT student behind William’s Register App, said: “I loved it. The project was very different from the standard lessons. It was lot of work to put together, especially the figures for the cash flow, but I learned a lot from it. It was amazing.” Judge Nigel Clibbens, Chief Financial Officer, Risk and Asset Finance, at The Car Finance Company said: “I was extremely impressed by the amount of effort and passion that went into all the ideas and presentations from the students. It was very hard to choose the winners from among them.”

All of the student entrepreneurs faced challenging questions from the panel, which they fielded with knowledge and confidence. The judges also gave constructive feedback on how best to achieve their business goals. Before awarding the prizes, returning judge Andrew Woodhouse congratulated all the students on their pitches, stressing that the judges “were very impressed by the quality and passion all of the entries, and that everyone was to be congrat-

Students at Central Sussex College in Crawley were given the opportunity recently to pitch their own new business plans to a panel of local business leaders at the College’s Dragons’ Den event. Following the format of the popular BBC TV programme, selected students developed fullyscoped business plans to present to experienced business leaders for their feedback, questions and investment. The event was the final stage of Central Sussex College’s 3E initiative to promote Enterprise, Employment and Entrepreneurship, which entailed a series of Enterprise activities including workshops and mentoring. This year the judges were Andrew Woodhouse of Hitachi Capital, Robert Cordwell and Mark Hitchings from Lombard, Nigel Clibbens of The Car Finance Company, and Richard Deighton from Inspiration Enterprise. Students from across the college were nominated by their respective lecturers to take part in the competition. Candidates were given a timescale to prepare their pitches, and then were selected in a semi-final by Lombard’s Credit Management Team and Anahita Henry, Programme Manager for Enterprise at the College. The ten finalists presented their new business ideas to the judges in front of fellow students and staff in the college’s Corporate Suite. Vice Principal, Dean Wynter, opened the event saying, ‘I’m delighted to see so many people here today. The Dragons’ Den event gets bigger every year, and this year we have more finalists than ever. The college has always recognised the importance of Enterprise, Employment and Entrepreneurship. It is wonderful to see so many future business leaders here today to pitch to our Dragons.’ Students presented a broad range of ideas, from a high tech green engine to a new fantasy roleplay game. Several teams focussed on businesses that would support those with disabilities, with

Queen recognises life-saving group Volunteers who help save lives with vital runs of blood supplies have been recognised by the Queen. SERV Sussex, which runs across West and East Sussex, said: “We are proud to announce that we have been selected to receive The Queens Award for Voluntary Service by Her Majesty the Queen. “This award is ranked as the equivalent to an MBE for our group and is recognition of the dedication and devotion that all our members display in all our activities. SERV is a registered charity that provides free out of hours transportation services for the NHS

Hospitals across Sussex between 19.00 and 06.00, 365 days of the year with 24 hour cover during Bank Holidays. Mike Mara, the group’s chairman said: “Our volunteers give freely of their time in all weathers, without seeking any recompense, to assist the NHS with the free delivery of blood products, time critical samples and human donor milk at no cost to the NHS. This award is recognition that their efforts are valued at the highest level and I am proud to be associated with them”. SERV transports blood products and other urgent consignments allowing hospitals to utilise their

resources elsewhere. St Barnabas shop in Henfield celebrates 10th birthday Manager Kylie Yates was a familiar face when staff, volunteers and supporters at St Barnabas House charity shop in Henfield celebrated the shop’s 10th birthday with a party. Kylie has been there since its opening day and for the celebration helped volunteers decorate the shop with a floral theme, and there was a beautiful hand-made St Barnabas birthday cake. Among the guests was a local resident, Lily Stubbs, who has been a regular customer at the shop since it first opened. Lily cut the cake with Hugh Lowson, CEO of St Barnabas, to mark the occasion. Hugh Lowson presented some of the dedicated shop volunteers with their five and 10 year long service badges, to thank them for their support and hard work. He also presented Kylie, with her 10 year long service badge, as she has been running the shop since it first opened in May 2007.

Head of Retail, Jan Harper said: “We’d like to thank everyone in the local community for supporting us with their generous donations and custom over the last 10 years. We’d also like to thank everyone who came along to the party to help make it such an enjoyable event.” Last year alone, the Henfield shop team processed and sold over 20,000 items, raising enough funds to support over 80 full days of care for a patient at the Hospice. The shop sells an excellent range of ‘boutique’ clothes and accessories and we are always looking for good quality donations. Celebrating 25 years with 30 miles

Sussex has some incredibly beautiful countryside and some of the team at GL & Co Estate Agents recently got on their bikes to enjoy 30 miles of this lovely area! GL & Co are celebrating 25 years in business this year and are hoping to raise £2,500 for local charities to mark this milestone, starting off the fundraising with this cycle ride. The intrepid team of 3 comprising of Neil Moore, MD at GL & Co, Callum Wyatt from the Storrington Office and Alex Travell, Pulborough office Assistance Manager completed the 30 mile route – not without some pain and a lot of aching limbs afterwards, combined with plenty of ‘why are we do-

ing this’? during the ride! Great questions but as Callum Wyatt aptly said, ‘you don’t ask people to donate and then not achieve your goal’. This resonated with the team several times through the event. Starting at 8am on Sunday 5th June (possibly one of the warmest days of the year so far!), the GL & Co team set off for the first 2 miles of the 30 mile cycle ride over the South Downs. Fontwell race course was a busy starting point with about 600 cyclists all organised by UK cycle events. The first 2 miles were easy on the road and then when they hit a dirt track the team faced a 500 ft ascent over a 2 mile period. This was the first climb of a total of 2723ft over

the course! The hard climbs were the long ones; the highest being about 750ft in one ascent. The team said ‘you knew going up that you had to come down again which you could do at speed, but we all knew a few joyful fast minutes led to the awful pain of another climb just around the corner!’ After 19 miles the GL & Co team had an 800ft climb which never seemed to come to an end, a few less biscuits at the feed stop might have been wise! Alex waited for Neil on a couple of occasions whilst he had to stop to deal with the worst cramp in his legs he had ever had; Alex showed little sympathy but did hang on (excuse for a rest perhaps)! It was challenging and testing but the three GL & Co cyclists finished in under 5 hours. The team felt very proud they all worked together and drove themselves on to finish the task they set out to do. Neil commented, ‘I am very proud of Callum and Alex who showed there metal and determination for a job well done.’ GL & Co have a target to raise £2500 for local charities including Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabus Hospice to celebrate their 25 year anniversary. Coming up some of the team are doing a 20 mile night walk followed by a 5 km mud challenge. Later in the year they are hosting a quiz – look out for more details if you fancy testing out your general knowledge. Summer blitz on drink and drug drivers Drivers face a blitz on drink and drugs after the start of a summer campaign. Surrey and Sussex Police’s summer drink and drug driving campaign, also known as Operation Dragonfly will run for a month. It will see the counties’ joint Roads Policing Unit carry out dedicated patrols to put the brakes on any motorists who take to the road while under the influence of intoxicating substances. The initiative is being supported by the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, DriveSmart in Surrey and the independent charity Crimestoppers. As well as RPU officers a number of Special Constables from Sussex will also be out on roads network to help target drink and drug drivers. About 300 officers across the force are now fully qualified to test motorists for drugs on the roadside. This is in addition to the hundreds more already able to test suspected drink drivers, making it even harder for motorists to get away with offences. Superintendent Chris Moon, Head of Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: “In the summer months when the weather tends to be nicer people will often stay out drinking later into the evening. There are some who find the temptation of driving home after a few drinks all too appealing and we want to share the message that this is not acceptable and drink or drug driving of any kind won’t be tolerated in Surrey or Sussex. Our advice is simple – go cold turkey or do not drive.

“Driving with drink or drugs in your system impairs your judgement and ability to drive safely. Not only can you cause injury or death to others, being caught drink or drug driving can also have other consequences such as a criminal record, a heavy fine, losing your job and licence and an increase in insurance premiums. It’s also worth remembering that it’s not just about planning your journey home, you may still be over the limit the following morning. “Passengers should not accept lifts from drivers who they know have drunk alcohol or taken drugs. We also ask that you refrain from offering an alcoholic drink or drugs to someone you know is planning to drive.” Anyone caught drink or drug-driving will be dealt with robustly – offenders face a minimum 12-month disqualification, up to six months imprisonment and a fine of up to £5000. If a death is caused through dangerous driving while over the limit, a sentence of up to 14 years behind bars can result. Members of the public are also being asked to play their part by reporting anyone they suspect to be driving under the influence. A new twist on the story of Robin Robin Hood with a twist was presented by youngsters. Junior pupils travelled back in time to 1172 and transformed The Towers School at Upper Beeding into Sherwood Forest and Nottingham Castle. This was “Robin Hood” with a twist. A band of actors looking for their next gig, mistakenly hired by the feisty Maid Marion, as a group of outlaws who can save Nottingham

from the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and dastardly King John. Headmistress Clare Trelfa said: “Against the backdrop of a superb stage lighting and sound, amazing costumes and props, Year six upils brought the story alive with their “Oswald” (AKA Oscar) worthy acting, ably supported from Reception to Year five with their singing and dancing.”

Students from Collyer’s college in Horsham have enjoyed a record year at the annual British Biology Olympiad 2017. Beating off stiff competition from thousands of contestants across the UK, the Collyer’s students won three gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. In addition, 13 Collyer’s students received Society of Biology commendations, with seven of those being highly commended. Dr Mike Price, Subject Leader for Biology at Collyer’s said: “The competition was incredibly demanding this year and really tested in-depth biological knowledge at the highest level. I’m thrilled that Collyer’s students have been deservedly recognised as amongst some of the very best in the coun-

try!” Gold medals were awarded to Thalia Ballinger, Sean Hutchinson and Jennifer Inglis-Taylor, with Sam Dallas and Emily Hayes achieving silver. Bronze medals were awarded to: Sonny Alwin, Rohan McGuinness, Angharad Moore, Ellie Clarke, Israel Harding; Liu Qing Hao and Patrick Slazak. Jenny Inglis-Taylor, who previously attended Millais School in Horsham, was delighted to win her gold medal and said: “It is great that Collyer’s is able to compete with and beat many of the top private schools and sixth form colleges from around the country. Terry’s Trekkers will step out from Brighton to Storrington on the Terry Bedford Foundation Trust sponsored strollthrough the South Downs to help build the link between good mental health and good physical health. Terry Bedford, from Storrington, was left disabled and suffering post traumatic stress after being crushed by a HGV lorry in an accident. Former long distance lorry driver Terry Bedford has been described as a “true inspiration” for the way he has fought back from severe nerve damage that left him with no feeling down most of his right side. He also suffers severe anxiety as a result of post traumatic stress following the incident that took place in July 2015. It has changed the life of the 51 year old and that of his wife Angela forever. Last year he did a 36 hour treadmill walk to raise money for the Terry Bedford Foundation Trust and Impulse Leisure, the charity which runs leisure facilities in West Sussex. Registration for the Terry Trekkers walk has opened and the charity is hoping many peoplewill join in the three-day event starting on July 21. Each day is finished with a fun event completing on Sunday at the trust’s main site in Storrington The walk which starts from BBC

Sussex in Brighton passes along the seafront to Worthing then heads up through the beautiful South Downs across three days. Walkers can start at any of points and for any or all three days. A free minibus will take walkers to and from the trust’s base in Storrington to the walk’s start each morning and home at the end of the day. Walkers can sign up online on the trusts website or collect a form from its hub in Storrington. Those joining can either sign up as individuals or as a group and with no registration fee a minimum sponsorship of £50 would be greatly appreciated. Participants receive a welcome pack with sponsor forms, a route map and a certificate at the end of the walk. This year’s top fundraiser will receive a limited edition TBFT Rugby Top. The top child fundraiser will receive a TBFT logo soft toy. A raffle will also be held with a variety of prizes. The Terry Bedford Foundation Trust hopes to raise £5000 from the walk to help fund its programmes of providing relief across Sussex and help sufferers with mental &amp; physical support. Rose theme for garden’s 21st anniversary This month marks the 21st anniversary of Jay Robin’s Rose Garden at Borde Hill, which will be celebrated with a week of ‘Rose’ themed activities. Those looking to discover the secrets of gardening successfully can attend a talk on the June 29 by award-winning journalist, lecturer and organic gardener Val Bourne as she shares insights on some of her favourite perennials, including Foxgloves. Designed by RHS gold medallist Robin Williams and initially planted with 450 David Austin Old English roses, Jay Robin’s Rose Garden now boasts more than 750. It has long been a tradition of the Stephenson Clarke Family, who have lived at Borde Hill, Haywards Heath, for four generations, to name part of the garden after a family member. The Rose Garden was named after the current Stephenson Clarke’s daughter Jay Robin. The week of celebrations from June 19-25 to mark the 21st anniversary of Jay Robin’s Rose Garden will include guided tours with Head Gardener Andy Stevens, and several rose-themed artworks being displayed as part of the 2017

Sculpture Exhibition. Art societies have been invited to record the beauty of the Rose Garden on canvas, and there will be daily guided tours of the Elizabethan mansion house for individuals and groups. The house is home to the Stephenson Clarke family, and rarely open to the public. Entry to the Jay Robin’s Rose Garden 21st anniversary celebrations is included in the normal price of a Garden entry ticket but House and Garden tours cost an extra £3.50 per person per tour and advance booking is required. The Rose Garden is one of the great attractions at Borde Hill, adding to the rare collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and Champion Trees. In Val Bourne’s ‘First-rate Perennials’ talk, she will share some of the best performing plants for your garden, and share insights on some of her favourite perennials, including Foxgloves. Young Entrepreneurs rise to Fiver challenge

Budding entrepreneurs in Years five and six at Towers School Upper Beeding have had the opportunity to get involved in new after school club this term. The girls are taking part in The Fiver Challenge organised by the Young Enterprise Scheme under the watchful eyes of Mary Thain, Junior School Administrator and Amanda Spells, one of its “mumpreneurs”. The Fiver Challenge runs throughout June and provides an interactive, fun way of introducing financial literacy, resilience and teamwork to primary students. School reflects on bus It has been a very busy and recording breaking year for the Performing Arts at Collyer’s. As the college approaches July’s Welcome Days, where new students begin their Collyer’s journey, it is only right that the college has been celebrating the achievements of the past year. Record audiences have attended numerous shows including: ‘Into the Woods’, ‘TWENTY’ (the 20th anniversary celebrations of the college’s NEW GROUND student dance company), the ‘Movember Gigs’, ‘Bedlam Years’ and ‘Act for Change’. In January the college presented Steven Sondheim’s challenging musical ‘Into the Woods’. The talented cast and crew included students from across the college and the fantastic set and props were designed and created by members of ‘The Art Class’, which forms part of Collyer’s 4As adult education provision. The production received rave reviews from staff, students and parents with standout performances from Darcy Davies as the Witch, Orla Ridpath as Red Riding Hood and Heather Bailey as Jack. The Collyer’s annual dance show this year was entitled TWENTY, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of NEW GROUND, the college’s student company. Each

year approximately 15 dancers are selected by audition to join the company. The dancers rehearse weekly to create work for public performance and represent the college at open evenings, community events and of course, the annual dance show. Over 300 students have taken part in NEW GROUND since its formation in 1997. Many of those students have gone on to study and train at professional level and now work as choreographers, teachers and performers within dance companies, musical theatre, TV and the music industry. Head of Dance, Andrea Martin said, “It has been a great privilege to direct the company since 1999 and this year it has been exciting to celebrate with old faces, as well as to welcome Hayley Ovens to the department and the company. Hayley teaches part-time at Collyer’s and spends the rest of her week working as a dancer and education manager at Ceyda Tanc Dance in Brighton, so she brings a wealth of professional experience to benefit the students”. The music departments’ live performances have raised nearly £1000 for charity so far this year at large scale events including the ‘Movember Gig’, Christmas Concert and Battle of the Bands. Collyer’s boasts some outstand-

ing musicians including: Lizzie Britton – winner of the Outstanding Contribution to Collyer’s Extracurricular Music award at the Prizegiving event as the choir leader and band leader; Nick Hoad – an exceptional composer; Jacqueline Lowe – an outstanding harpist and stalwart student bands The Fables, The 109s, A Million Hippos and Wave Floor. In September students performed the musical ‘Bedlam Years’ about British values & voices from the 1700s. Following on from the success of Bedlam Years, Drama student Clare Packham, produced and directed the show ‘Act for Change’ in November. Clare said, “I decided to direct and produce this show, not only to develop my directorial skills but to support the charity ‘Act for Change’. The project is about increasing diversity in the arts, a cause close to me as an aspiring artist. I selected a range of scenes, speeches and songs and used non-traditional casting to prove your talent is not determined by your race, sexual orientation, class, gender or other factors.” Vice Principal Steve Martell said: “Collyer’s has enjoyed a stunning, record breaking year in performing arts. It is no wonder that we are now attracting young performers from across the south

show in Sussex sy year for performers Biggest spins into second day

The South of England Show spins into its second day today (Friday). Many Royal family fans were looking forward to the scheduled visit of the Duchess of Cornwall to the showground at Ardingly yesterday as the show opened. But there is plenty more to enjoy as the countryside showcase really gets into its stride for its final two days, closing on Saturday evening. The South of England Agricultural Society is celebrating the charity’s 50th year of supporting agriculture and the countryside, since it was established in 1967. It is showing off the best of British agriculture, horticulture, forestry, equestrianism, rural crafts and skills as well as delicious food. Cattle, goats, pigs and sheep are among the livestock on show.

The Society is showcasing its own charitable work and continued support for the next generation throughout the show with hundreds of students from schools and colleges across the region involved in competitions, exhibits and demonstrations including the prestigious Young Craftsman of the Year exhibition. There is new entertainment in the main ring this year with The Devil’s Horsemen, Britain’s top equestrian stunt and trick team, who are performing breathtaking displays to music, dressed as Cossacks. Traditional precision marching and musical arrangements from the City of Coventry Corps of Drums impress audiences and other highlights include the high-energy, micro-sized Shetland Pony Grand National; hound parades; and the famous livestock display with hundreds of beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs and goats in the main arena. More than 1,500 horses and ponies are taking take part in the equestrian showcase that forms an enormous part of the three-day extravaganza, featuring dozens of classes from impressive heavy horse turnouts to the fast paced inter-hunt relay, spectacular show jumping to beautiful hackneys.

Our annual open-air Model Show returns for a fifth year with: Displays exhibiting Boats both static and on the beautiful Ribbon Lake with a pyrotechnic display each day. Scale Planes and Helicopter displays across the top field and Bettyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lake as well as Quadcopters and Drones racing all day. Exciting electric and petrol powered RC Cars racing all day around a purpose built track complete with pit area. Brilliant Tank and Military displays, impressive electric and steam Train displays, amazing novelty Kites and much more. Have-a-go areas, model traders, bring and buy, food and drink plus other activities too. In 2016 the event helped to raise over ÂŁ1000 for charity and good causes.

The charity, which provides unique immediate and flexible respite care for families with disabled children, has made the decision to leave Swan Walk Shopping Centre, this week, to focus on finding a permanent home with outdoor space. The Horsham Care in High Street premises was the second of its kind and, following its success, Hop, Skip & Jump have now gone on to open a further centre in Liverpool, to add to their 4 others. In the charity’s time at Swan Walk, the dedicated team of both staff

and volunteers have provided support to hundreds of families across the county. Highlighted in the research was the over-reliance on voicemail when returning or making phone calls, having to wait for people to call back before you get the answer you require. Similarly, a delay caused by having to wait for emails to be answered with relevant information was another area that increased time wastage each day. 2 hours, 10 minutes was the amount that people wasted each day at work on average, of which 1 hour 38 minutes was due to communication technologies not being used to good effect. Men are the biggest timewasters when it comes to non-work activities. When asked to admit what they were really doing while they were working, the key findings were ( men first, women second): Emailing with friends: 39 percent compared to 36 percent Following sport online: 19 percent compared to 4 percent Arranging social life: 29 percent compared to 21 percent Online shopping: 21 percent com-

pared to 14 percent Out of 1468 people questioned, the average time spent each day waiting for or chasing responses to urgent emails and on unnecessary emails was 42 minutes. An average of 27 minutes was wasted responding to voicemails or managing phone calls and 12 minutes was lost trying to locate colleagues. According to the study, the other average times wasted each day were: Travel not including to and from work: 14 minutes Chasing responses to urgent emails: 42 minutes Responding to voicemails or managing phone calls: 27 minutes Trying to locate colleagues: 12 minutes Meetings that are unnecessarily long: 12 minutes Asking others for files or documents (e.g. version control): 9 minutes Scheduling and re-scheduling meetings: 8 minutes Conference calls that could be far shorter: 6 minutes So, on average the misuse of office technology adds more than 2 hours to the working day per employee – How much is that costing your business?? The centre near Alfriston has kept up with the times about the changing tastes of children and the unending demand for new adventures. But the essential core of having fun remains at its heart. I noticed the attention to detail on safety on the dazzling new rides, the Hippopotobus and the whirling Flying Cheetahs, as well as others. Looking Good For Team Atlantis Horsham Joggers race over three counties

Swimming Team Atlantis prepare the for final round of the Sussex league with another comprehensive home win. Once again both Atlantis A and B teams competed in the Sussex league on Saturday evening with Atlantis A’s hosting Hailsham and Littlehampton at Pavillions and the B squad travelled to Eastbourne. The A team got off to an unaccustomed slow start, but this

might of been just the motivation the swimmers needed to focus on the task in hand which was another win to keep their 100 percent win record. The 57 races were closely contested with Atlantis and Hailsham neck and neck at the halfway stage. Some strong words of encouragement from the coaches and vocal support from the swimmers and crowd saw Atlantis step up another gear and eventually win the event with a score of 407 points 50 clear of second place.

The B team had a tough evening of competition, but the spirit and determination of the swimmers delighted coach Becky Harrison and they eventually secured second place on the night. The final evening of the Sussex swimming league takes place on June 24th. The A team travel to Burgess Hill where they face Mid Sussex Marlins and local rivals Crawley where the winners will be crowed Sussex Champions. Whilst the B team play hosts at Pavillions Horsham. Good luck to Team Atlantis.

4 Wins for Pulborough Against Tough Opposition!

The weekend saw Horsham Joggers competing in races over three counties. A very early 4am start on Saturday for 12 of our runners who formed male and female teams to compete in the annual 100 mile South Downs Way Relay from Beachy Head to Winchester. An exhausting made easier by the stunning scenery on a beautiful summer day. Sunday saw a large contingent of Joggers at the Worthing 10K. Paul Oakley was the first jogger

home in 37.25 swiftly followed by Pete O’Connell in 38.01 with Rebecca Gattinessi the first female in 48.39. Other results from Worthing included Paul Adams 40.03, Mike O’Grady 41.25, Colin Ashby 42.24, Keith Valentine 45.33, Lorraine Treadwell 49.25 Four joggers raced the the Dorking 10 mile with Matt Mason first home in 1.06.57 followed by Stuart Carruthers in 1.08.18. Wendy and Tony Mason followed in 1.24.41 and 1.41.10 respectively.

A tight League match for Storrington Bowling Club A home League match against Bognor Regis “B” proved to be a tense affair with both clubs winning 2 games each. Howard White’s team played a real nail-biter and was 21- 22 down at start of the last end. A score of 2 shots however gave them a 23 -22 shot win. Harry Kendall’s team’s performance was less nerve wracking as they pulled systematically ahead to win 21=15. Peter Newman’s game was another up and down perfor-

Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC The week began with an annual fixture betwean Pulborough and the Cawston Tourists from Norfolk. 5 rinks made the trip to Sussex and the banter flew as soon as their coach doors opened! The Pulborough side was bolstered out by a rink from Fittleworth, who relished the challenge of playing the Tourists, that were determined to put on a good show, both on and off the green. Skips Steve and Len Adsett both had strong games, winning 29/14 and 21/16 respectively, but top rink of the day went to the Fittleworth side of Dave, Monica, David and Bernard, with an outstanding

score of 32/6! Weds 31st saw Pulborough host Hotham from 6pm. 3 triples played 18 ends of competitive bowls, with top rink going to skip, Chris Etherington, number 1, Shaun Jupp and number 2, Melvin Green, 22/9. The final result was 57/37 to Pulborough. Pulborough BC travelled to Arundel on Sat 3rd June, for their next round in the West Sussex Bowls League. 4 rinks of men played 21 ends, with 1 loss, a draw and 2 wins for Pulborough yielding 7 points from a possible 10! A fantastic result considering they were white-washed in the same fixture last year! Top rink went to Paul Day, with Adey Stratton, Martyn Ralf and Steve Adsett in support, 30/11. The overall score

was 88/65 to Pulborough. The final friendly of the week was at home to Horsham on Sun 4th. A good-natured game turned into an embarrassingly good result for Pulborough, with wins on all 4 rinks and an overall figure of 82/49! Top rink went to Paul Day, with Kath Ayling as lead and Len Adsett as 2, 23/8. County success came from Ivan Salmon, who got through to the next round of the singles and Adey Stratton and Paul Day, who beat another team from Pulborough to make the next round of the pairs, well done to all! Next week, Pulborough face RAFA on Tues in the BML, Maltravers on Thurs in the WSBL and have a club event on Sat 10th, spectators always welcome.

Sussex cricket returns to Roffey waltz through to Horsham–free ground entry! R4 of the National Cup

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sussex’s Chris Nash is delighted to welcome the county back to Horsham Cricket Club for two top T20 matches on Wednesday June 21 - his celebratory testimonial day. The county will be bringing their full T20 squad, including their international players, Chris telling the District Post: “Our T20 campaign gets underway in early July and we’re very keen to get some

serious preparation. So, we’ve invited two strong teams to take us on and give us a proper contest. Up against us there’ll be a mix of overseas players like New Zealand test match opening bat Jeet Raval and South African fast bowler Craig Alexander – and some of the best of the Sussex Premier League players, including Horsham’s Michael Munday and Mika Ekstrom. The first game starts at around 11am, then, after the corporate lunch in the hospitality marquee, at which there are just one or two tables left,

the second match gets underway at 3.30. During the lunch interval 40 children from Tanbridge House School will be playing, and Roger Dakin, the best and busiest MC I know, will be speaking at the lunch – he’s played cricket and golf, was an England hockey international and is in great demand for his amusing sports stories. And, we’ll have an auction, a raffle and a Q and A session, too!” The day will be a homecoming for 33 year old Chris, who started playing at Horsham Cricket Club when he was seven, and was soon on Sussex’s radar. A key member of Sussex’s Championship and trophy winning sides, Chris has so far played well over 400 games for the county, his 17,000 runs including 25 centuries. He has also taken almost 200 wickets and, after Luke Wright relinquished the captaincy, has been called on to lead Sussex. The fund raising will be supporting two of Chris’s favourite charities – Rockinghorse, improving the lives of sick children throughout Sussex, and the Sussex Cricket Foundation encouraging and promoting a wide range of cricketing initiatives across the county. Sunday June 4 England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship – Round 3 Blackheath 221-8 (45 overs) Roffey 224-5 (40 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Perhaps describing Roffey’s win as a waltz was over-egging it slightly – there were some false steps along the way, but not many. Blackheath, 2015 winners of this nationwide competition, were runners up in the Kent Premiership last year and are third with four wins from five starts this season, so they are a decent outfit. Perhaps, though, their credentials got the better of them and they were a little arrogant? They possibly felt that it was a bit beneath them to have to rock up at Roffey, but at 2-2 with both openers gone for ducks they soon realised that they had a game on their hands. And, with Rohit Jagota probing away frugally and other bowlers chipping in, 51-4 deteriorated to 91-7 - despite Dipayan Paul’s adherence. Another of Roffey’s legendary mouth-

watering teas surely beckoned? But, Blackheath’s number 9, Jahid Ahmed, put the refreshments on hold, his run a ball undefeated 61 including 10 fours. The 222 run target was, though, of the moderate variety and although Roffey wobbled to 18-2, consistent contributions from Jibran Khan (58), Jagota (36), Usman Khan (24 not out) and, especially Alex Southon, 73, with 10 fours and four sixes, saw Roffey home with five overs uncashed. Earlier, Jagota had taken 3-25 and Luke Barnard 3-43, Alex Collins and Jibran sharing the other scalps in another concerted team effort. Roffey Captain Matt Davies told the District Post: “Blackheath are clearly a good side, so it was a really good win, a good all round performance – and an awesome weekend for us after walloping Horsham yesterday. We’ve got a big game against East Grinstead at home in the next round on June 25 – they had a walkover against Hastings today.” East Grinstead are breathing down League leaders Roffey’s neck in the Premier League – just two points adrift. Last year and the year before they skittled Roffey in the Crawley Road fixtures, but this season’s game was rained off.

Saturday June 3 Sussex Premier League Horsham 100 all out (35 overs) Roffey 102 -2 (19.3 overs) Roffey won by 8 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Horsham 1 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter This game was destined to be a close contest – Horsham’s side including three players with considerable first class experience and a county second XI player against reigning Premier League Champions Roffey with a county pro in their team. But, despite Horsham’s steady

start, their fallibility on visits to Roffey returned to haunt them, Roffey winning comprehensively by 4.10. Put in, Horsham had lost two wickets by the twelfth over but when Will Beer and Michael Thornely staged a recovery there was no hint of impending calamity. Roffey, though, were doing what they do best, restricting the opposition with tight bowling and clinical fielding. Yet, when Beer was out for 28 at the half way stage of the innings, no alarm bells rang, but the need for acceleration from 89-3 resulting in Horsham’s downfall, with outstanding catching from injudicious shots. All eight catches offered – including two huge skiers - were gleefully accepted. Rohit Jagota’s leaping one hander in the gulley to dismiss Thornely was matched by Ben Manenti’s diving peach off his own bowling. Theo Rivers also pulled off a stunner in the deep as Horsham lost their last eight wickets for 11 runs in 10 overs. A thigh muscle injury had sidelined Stuart Whittingham after bowling just two overs, evergreen groundsman Drew Smallwood gallantly subbing. But, the depth of Roffey’s bowling resources prevailed, Leigh Harrison was rightly Man of the Match for taking four top wickets for 23, but this was a concerted team effort, Manenti finishing with 2-4, Luke Barnard 2-0 off his single over and George

Fleming and Jagota (whose 10 overs cost a miserly 22 runs) one apiece. Horsham’s spectacular collapse deprived them of 15 overs and a target of 101 was never going to inconvenience Roffey. They lost an early wicket, but Jagota’s 59 not out included 6 fours and 4 sixes, Roffey storming home with more than 30 overs to spare. Horsham Captain Michael Thornely told the District Post: “We made it impossible for ourselves by losing so many cheap wickets, we needed around 250. Roffey really know how to bowl here and have the ideal bowlers for their wicket. We’ve just got to put this behind us and re-group for our home fixture against Brighton & Hove (tomorrow, Saturday).” Roffey were naturally happier, skipper Matt Davies telling us: “Our season started with some easier games, so this was our first proper test. We built pressure in the field and winning like that has boosted our confidence. We’re in as good a shape as I can remember, but we’ll need to be at our best at Cuckfield (this Saturday).” Roffey remain top, two points ahead of East Grinstead, while Horsham slip to 6th. Premier League games will now be on the traditional 110 over format until August 12, when they revert to the 50 over basis.
