Jeremy Quin has been elected for Horsham Constituency, with a total of 36,906 votes - 23,484 votes more than his closest rival. The result reflects an overall increase in the number of registered voters across the UK. Shortly after the result, Quin posted his response on facebook: “It is a huge privilege to be reelected as the MP for Horsham and I was delighted to see an increase of around 15 per cent in the Conservative vote to 36,906 and (at 59 per cent) to secure a higher proportion of the votes cast than in 2015. It is a huge pleasure to be getting back to work on behalf of constituents, whatever their political views.” In the lead up to last week’s general election, record numbers of people registered to vote, in the last 24 hours before the deadline, and 68.7% of the electorate turned up June 8 to cast their vote. This runs in line with the trend of a steady increase in voter turn-out, since 2001, in which registration
numbers (less than 60%) reached a record low. The 2015 elections brought out 66.1% of the electorate. The results of last week’s election have been published by Horsham District Council and are as follows: QUIN, Jeremy Mark - The Conservative Party Candidate - 36,906 (Elected) BRADY, Susannah Mary - Labour Party - 13,422 MILLSON, Morwen Elizabeth Liberal Democrats - 7,644

Local party leaders cosign open letter to Quin James Smith (Something New), Morwen Millson (Liberal Democrats) and Catherine Ross (Green Party) co-signed an open letter to Jeremy Quin MP. The letter asks him to oppose the Conservative Government’s deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and vote to protect hard-won rights on equality issues, abortion and the environment in any debates or votes that might come up as a result of the deal. The trio, who all stood as candidates in the general election last week handed the letter over at Gough House, Horsham’s Conservative Party HQ on Tuesday 13 June. The letter: Dear Jeremy Quin, Congratulations on your re-election as the MP for Horsham. The campaign was a good opportunity for all of us to reach out to our supporters and find out what they think and how they want their elected representatives to behave. As fellow representatives of your constituents, we felt compelled to write to you and urge you to ensure you represent the whole constituency in your actions in Westminster. We are deeply concerned that the Conservative Party is using an agreement with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in order to form a government. The DUP is a deeply regressive party, and such a deal could be incredibly destabilising for the peace in Northern Ireland, in place since the Good Friday Agreement. Some experts are even suggesting that a deal would be illegal under the terms of the Agreement. We would ask you, in the first instance, to stand up and oppose any coalition or alliance between your party and the DUP. If such
an alliance is unavoidable, we will expect you to defend our values from your coalition partners; to speak up to defend LGBTQIA+ rights, women’s abortion rights, and the urgency of dealing with climate change. If you don’t feel able to oppose the alliance in principle, there are several areas in which we think it’s essential that you safeguard the values the people of Britain and the people of Horsham hold dear in votes and debates in the House: Equality. We urge you to ensure LGBTQIA+ rights are not impacted by any deal your party seeks to make with the ultra-conservative DUP - a party that is openly homophobic. Northern Ireland is the only remaining part of the UK where same-sex marriage is not legal, due to the DUP’s use of a veto to block legislative changes. The party considers it a “red line” issue for power sharing, so is unlikely to let it relax its position in government. Women’s rights. The DUP has consistently restricted abortion rights in Northern Ireland, forcing women to put their health and even their lives at risk. Our abortion laws have been hard won and protect the rights and health of women. Environment. Although opposing climate change legislation is not party policy, the DUP previously appointed a climate change denier as environment minister. Climate change is the biggest threat to humanity, something that needs to be reflected in the UK Government’s commitment to deal with it. Please assure us and the people of Horsham that you will stand up on these important issues, against your party, if necessary. We look forward to your response.

Horsham Twinning Association visits Lage, our twin town
Horsham Twinning Association is a voluntary and self-funded association which arranges visits between Horsham and its twin towns, Lage in Germany and St. Maixent in France. The idea is to promote friendship and an understanding of each other’s cultures. In many cases, the visitors stay as guests of families, in our twin towns, and members of the association repay the favour, by putting up our twin visitors when they visit Horsham. Lage is a delightful town, of a similar size to Horsham, in the north-west of Germany. It is not far from Minden, where many British soldiers were stationed during the Cold War. The high point of the recent visit to Lage was a rousing concert given by Horsham’s Pleasure Singers and children from Kingslea Primary School and Ehrentrup Grundschule. The party from Horsham were welcomed by Lage’s mayor, Herr Christian Liebrecht, and by Moritz Freiherr von Eckartstein, the chairman of Lage’s partnership association. Both men praised the moving performances of the singers and, in
particular, the English and German children who sang together, even in each other’s languages, as if they had been rehearsing together for weeks. A total of 28 children and 43 adults made the trip from Horsham to Germany. During the visit, organised by Kingslea School and Horsham Twinning Association, the children were also able to enjoy visits to a bird of prey centre, an open air museum and other local attractions, as well as getting to know their German class mates, while the adults enjoyed visits to the Dr Oetker’s cake mix factory, shopping at a nearby spa town, and a boat trip along the river Weser. During his speech of thanks, James Prentice, Chairman of Horsham Twinning Association, paid tribute to the spirit of friendship and partnership that existed between the two towns and invited the Lage partnership association to visit Horsham in 2019. Horsham Twinning Association is open to all and welcomes new members. For further information, please contact James Prentice at jprent@btinternet.com

Star supporters step out for St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk The streets of Horsham were aglow with a sea of orange and neon, as more than 900 women, men and children stepped out under the stars, as part of St Catherine’s Hospice’s 10th anniversary Midnight Walk on Saturday (10 June), sponsored by Gatwick Airport. Broadbridge Heath, the starting point for the walk, was buzzing, as people came together to raise money for the charity, which cares for local people facing death and bereavement. Walkers were treated to goody bags, an energising warm-up by Alex Duffy, a musical performance from the Horsham Rock Choir, and rousing speeches from Head of Community Engagement at Gatwick Airport, Alison Addy, and St Catherine’s Chief Executive, Giles Tomsett, before being sent out to pound the pavements. With glow sticks to help light their way, walkers enjoyed one of three, brand new, 7, 13 and 20 mile walking loops through the streets of Horsham, including stop-offs at The Holbrook Club, for refreshments, and St Mary’s Church, where people lit a candle in memory of someone special. Wendy Buckingham, from Surrey, took part in this year’s walk for the first time, with a team of 12 family and friends, in memory of her husband, Ken who was cared for by St Catherine’s. After the group completed their seven mile walk, Wendy said: “The best part was the camaraderie. All the people I walked with have supported the girls and I since we lost Ken. The marshals and volunteers were amazing; they kept us going and it was lovely to have the beautiful St Mary’s Church open to stop and light a candle. Walking as a family and having my girls take part for their Daddy has

There was a brilliant buzz from start to finish, and we’d like to thank every single person who took part... thank every single person who took part, for giving up sleep to step out under the stars. We’d also like to thank our sponsors, Gatwick Airport, for their help, energy and enthusiasm into the early hours, and all our volunteer marshals, whose fantastic support kept walkers going throughout the night. Historic St Mary’s House and Garden had the honour of welcoming HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent, on Tuesday 30 May, to meet some 45 loyal volunteers who have contributed their time and energies in helping to keep the nationally important Grade I house open to the public. Her Royal Highness was greeted by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs. Susan Pyper, accompanied by Marine cadet, Sgt. Kurt Smith. Mr Tom Crowley, Chief Executive, Horsham District Council, was then presented. Owner-custodians, Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton had the great pleasure of taking the
Princess on a personal tour of the fine historic rooms. The Princess expressed considerable interest in the various family collections and many exhibits, and seemed fascinated by the variety of fine panelling, especially the unique ‘Painted Room’ with its unique trompe l’oeil murals painted for the visit of Queen Elizabeth I. She was both gracious and charming, and her natural manner put everyone at ease, as she spoke to each recipient in turn. The Princess then moved outside to the Jubilee Rose Garden, where she paused to see the appropriately chosen Princess Alexandra of Kent roses and a
special commemorative tree, Acer Palmatum shadeshojo, planted in her honour. By this time, all the remaining volunteers had assembled in the newly-planted ‘King’s Garden’, designed by Roger Linton, Curator of St. Mary’s, to commemorate the escape through Bramber of Charles II on his way to France in 1651. At the centre of the garden is a sapling ‘grandson’ of the original ‘Boscobel’ oak-tree in which the king hid after the Battle of Worcester. The Princess then cut the red ribbon and declared the King’s Garden open, after which she chatted to each of the 45 volunteers in turn. Following a break for family tea in the Drawing Room, HRH Princess Alexandra came out to the South Lawn, where she was applauded by all the volunteers and guests who had gathered there for a group photograph. She was then presented with a posy by 10-year-old Chloe Whitaker, daughter of one of the trustees, and a gift of St Mary’s honey by Mrs Vanessa Timms. Peter and Roger thanked the Princess on everyone’s behalf, for all her encouragement and support. Peter Thorogood said: “we have had many memorable moments during our thirty-two years at St Mary’s, but this Royal visit has been without question the highlight”.
Take care when buying jewellery online for children Parents are being urged to take extra care when ordering jewellery online for children from a retailer they do not know. The warning comes after excessive amounts of heavy metals were uncovered in recent testing of children’s jewellery bought online. This can be harmful to health. West Sussex Trading Standards issued the warning as part of Child Safety Week (5-12 June). One item of children’s jewellery, the team purchased online, was found to contain over 50 times the legal limit of lead levels. This dangerous volume of metal can leach into the child’s skin and enter their bloodstream. Trading Standards examined nine other shop-bought jewellery items. All tested as satisfactory. In conclusion, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, Debbie Kennard, said: “Take your time to do your research before buying any jewellery online, especially for a child. “If in doubt then make sure you buy from a retailer you know and trust. It is even bet-
ter if you can inspect the item first-hand. If you can, buy or bid for new items which are in their original packaging. This also means they don’t carry a hygiene risk.” Also as part of Child Safety Week, Trading Standards is: • warning new parents of the dangers of nappy sacks. It follows a number of babies suffocating on the sacks in recent years. Parents are being urged to keep the sacks out a child’s reach at all times and avoid leaving them in cots, prams or buggies. • advising catering businesses about their legal obligation to inform customers about specific allergens in their meals. Any customers who are refused allergen information should contact Trading Standards on 03454 040506 or visit www. westsussex.gov.uk/TSreport. Child Safety Week is run annually by the Child Accident Prevention Trust. It aims to draw attention to the risks of accidents suffered by children and how to prevent them from happening. Don’t forget Father’s Day: A brief history
Father’s Day originated in the Middle Ages. It was then observed on 19 March, as the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly Nutritor Domini (“Nourisher of the Lord”) in Catholicism and “the putative father of Jesus” in southern European tradition. The modern version of Father’s
Day emerged in the US in the early 1900s. Harry C. Meek, a member of Lions Clubs International, claimed to have first come up with the modern idea for Father’s Day in 1915. Meek rather immodestly chose the third Sunday in June because it was his birthday. On June 19, 1910, a Father’s Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors at her church did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Several local clergy accepted the idea, and on June 19, 1910, the first Father’s Day sermons honouring fathers were given. In the 1930s, Dodd started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the not altogether altruistic help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, including tie
and tobacco pipe manufacturers. By 1938, she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers. In 1966, US President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was finally made a permanent national holiday in the US when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Annual Riverside Walk approaches
As the 15 July date of the Annual Riverside Walk draws closer, plans are in place for the welfare of participants. To provide shelter during the lunch stop at Warnham Nature Reserve, the 1st Roffey Scout Group has once again kindly agreed to loan and erect large tents to give
protection from rain or hot sun. Jane Apostolou, chair of the organisers, Horsham Town Community Partnership (HTCP), said: “The help from the Scouts will be great benefit on the day and contribute to its success. We want to be prepared.” The 1st Roffey Scout Group is one of the oldest Scout groups in Horsham, having been continuously in existence from 1920. Scouting encourages young people and adults to develop and learn, whilst having fun, and offers a range of scouting activities for boys, girls and young adults aged 6-18, through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. The four sections hold regular weekly meetings and try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, taking part in regular camps as well as hiking competitions, competition shooting and water sports. Paddington Bear™: This year,
those taking part on the Walk are being asked to collect cash, perhaps by sponsorship, for the local children’s charity Action Medical Research, whose mascot, Paddington, will be present on the day. Paddington will assist at the start of the Walk, at 10am at Horsham Rugby Club, and will be at Warnham by lunch time. Later, back at the club, he will help by handing out certificates to walk finishers. Please contact Action by phone: 07821 117881 or email: kking@action.org.uk for a sponsorship pack (or donate on the day). Registration: HTCP are asking for registration beforehand, by phone: 07780 701184 or email: horshamriversidewalk@gmail.com, to help to discern likely numbers for catering purposes. Southern’s Go-Learn programme is a hit with 5,000 youngsters Pupils from Horsham’s Northolmes Junior school enjoy a train ride
Over the last year, Southern and Sussex Community Rail Partnership’s (SCRP) Go-Learn railway education programme, focused on teaching school children about safe and independent travel, has been delivered to almost 5,500 children. The programme receives excellent reviews, from both teachers and youngsters and continues to engage youngsters and encourage them to be safe train travellers. Recent evaluation shows that 85% of pupils scored 100% on a quiz taken after the session, rising to 98% of those involved getting all but one of the questions correct. 68% of participants said they felt safer about travelling by rail and more confident to use the train. The programme includes: • Sessions provided by Southern’s Rail Enforcement Officers (REOs), often as part of local authorityled safety events. During these events, the REOs spend time focusing on important principles, such as being aware of fast trains, as well as the dangers of trespassing and the third rail. • SCRP’s Education Officer, Angie Lowen, visits schools as part of the scheme and spends a lesson looking at journey planning and personal safety. She then works with local teams to welcome youngsters into a station environment, turning theory into practice. • Southern staff from across the company who volunteer with youth groups, such as beavers, cubs and scouts, have also worked
together to adapt the material to fit in with the way these groups organise their activities. Southern’s Head of Safety and Environment, Colin Morris, said: “Go-Learn is aimed at helping youngsters to think more about using trains as a sustainable form of transport, whilst ensuring they act in a way which keeps them and others safe. It is truly wonderful to see the impressive results and high numbers we are getting this safety message to. I am really proud of the efforts of our REOs and Angie. It’s great to see more staff getting involved to deliver this important message.” SCRP’s Angie Lowen added: “The whole Go-Learn programme is considered by the teachers to be a very valuable way of teaching important life skills to Year 6 children. The children all enjoy it, many of them engage in a way that doesn’t always happen in other areas of the curriculum. It is a very rewarding job that I do, and I really enjoy it.” Feedback from the classroom sessions has demonstrated an equal enjoyment of each part of the lesson, with the section on “Keeping safe on the railway” enjoyed the most. Feedback from teachers has been positve: “Found this visit incredibly helpful and informative. Very clear and concise information”, “Helpful focus on transition from Year 6 – Year 7. Thank you!”, “Brilliant life skills.”, “It was really interesting to the adults present too.”

Speech Day at Christ’s Hospital Superheroes needed to Photo by Toby Phillips
The Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Andrew Parmley, and the Sheriffs of the City of London, were guests of honour at Christ’s Hospital’s Speech Day on Saturday, 27 May, along with 800 parents and supporters of the School. A service in the Chapel was a prelude to the March Past by 800 pupils to the accompaniment of the School’s famous Band - who will also be appearing at the Lord Mayor’s Show later on in the year. Luckily, in spite of the predicted showers, the weather stayed fine. The Band’s performance was outstanding and junior pupils, Jessica and Kwame, bravely stepped out to present flowers to the Lady Mayoress and to Mrs Kim Frank-
lin. At the Prize Giving ceremony that followed, senior pupils were presented with awards and prizes, from generous supporters across the UK and overseas, recognising academic achievement, leadership, international relations and outward bound activities. These included grants from livery companies and foundations, individual supporters and the Friends of Christ’s Hospital in the US. The Friends in the US have supported the Transatlantic Exchange programme, which provides CH pupils with the opportunity to spend a month at the Gilman and Bry Mawr Schools in Baltimore, Maryland. The highlight of the ceremony was the 10 minute ora-

tion given by the Senior Grecian (Head Pupil), Peter Callas, 18, to which the Lord Mayor gave an animated response. Head Master of Christ’s Hospital, John Franklin said: “It was a pleasure to welcome The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of London to the School on Speech Day. The day was a great success. The pupils took an obvious pride in marching for their House and it was pleasing to see pupils in their final term at Christ’s Hospital receive their well-deserved prizes and awards.” The day finished with a buffet lunch and an opportunity for visitors to see the Year 13 (Grecians’) Art Exhibition. When Christ’s Hospital was founded in 1552, it was the Lord Mayor of the day, Sir Richard Dobbs, who gathered a committee to raise money following Edward’s VI’s request to set up Christ’s Hospital for the education of boys and girls. Today, the School continues its original mission to provide a life-changing educational opportunity. The Lord Mayor is Vice President of the School. ‘Tri’ new charity challenge Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC) is urging people to team up and take part in the UK’s first and only disability sports series, the Superhero Tri. The Charity has six team places available for the Sprint Superhero Tri event. Anyone can take part, as long as one of the team of three considers themselves to have a disability. The Superhero Tri, which takes place on August 19 at the 2012 Olympic site, Dorney Lake, is a triathlon which brings disabled and non-disabled family and friends together as a team. However, unlike traditional triathlons, the groups can choose to participate in one, or all three disciplines. The idea was the brainchild of British Paralympian, and one of DVLCC’s Patrons, Sophia Warner. Sophia commented: “The idea for the first event being a triathlon came about because swimming, cycling and running are the three most popular disability sports. I also loved the idea of creating a series where people, with all kinds of disabilities, can come together and compete alongside like-minded individuals who face similar daily experiences and challenges. “As someone who has cerebral palsy, I fully understand the issues and complexities this brings and, through hard work and determination, have proved that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it, whatever disadvantages
you have been born with.” Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager of DVLCC, said: “The Superhero Tri is a fantastic way to bring family and friends together and get involved in something inspirational. We would love people to take part in one of our Charity teams to support us and help children under five years old who have cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties.” If you would like to enter a team, or find out further information, please call Nikki Cannon: 01444 473274 or email: nikki. cannon@dvlcc.org.uk Full details of the event can be found at: http://superheroseries. co.uk/ For more information on Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity visit: https://dvlcc.org.uk/.

Collyer’s student wins Public Affairs Award (left to right): Sally Bromley, Gemma Bolton and Noami Lask
Zonta conducts valuable work in over 1200 clubs across 67 countries. Individual clubs across the world select, fund and participate in community projects that address issues such as women’s economic selfsufficiency, legal equity, access to education and healthcare, and eradication of violence.
Gemma Bolton has won the Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs Award for her commitment to, and involvement with, public affairs
Collyer’s student Gemma Bolton has been presented with the prestigious Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs Award for 2017. The prize, awarded by the Zonta Club of Guildford, encourages participation in political, public and community projects. Gemma follows in the footsteps of Antonia Nelson, a brilliant Collyer’s student who won the prize in 2014. Hilde Bartlett, the chair of the Zonta Awards Committee for the Guildford branch, said: “The members of the Zonta Club of Guildford & Surroundings are thrilled to have
a second winner from The College of Richard Collyer. The club’s prestigious leadership award is an annual competition, for girls aged between 16–19, and we look forward to many more applicants from Richard Collyer College in the future. Zonta is a world-wide organisation working to advance the status of women in every sphere.” The name Zonta is a Sioux Indian word which signifies “honest and trustworthy”. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, USA, it is now a global organization with consultative status with the United Nations.
Collyer’s Equality and Diversity Officer, Noami Lask, was delighted: “Gemma Bolton has won the Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs Award for her commitment to, and involvement with, public affairs. Her achievements include setting up the Collyer’s Young Activists Society, and she is heavily involved in the local Labour Party. She is an absolute credit to Collyer’s and a great role model for the next generation.” Gemma Bolton said: “It’s an honour to receive this prize. In the future, I plan to pursue an interest in politics, and have even considered standing as a Member of Parliament!”

Celebrate summer with your best BBQ yet! June means it’s officially summer, and the prospect of surprisingly brilliant British weather can only mean one thing… it’s time to throw a barbecue with your friends and family! But, before you start warming those coals, spare a thought for those dirty grills which have been languishing in the garden shed since August 2016. Oven Pride has pulled together some top tips, on how to show your barbecue some summer loving, that will not only make your food taste better, but help maintain one of the most loved summer cooking tools around. 1. You wouldn’t cook a steak in a dirty pan, so why put your steak on the barbecue before giving it a good clean? Be sure to start off by cleaning your barbecue grates and, to make your life easier, Oven Pride’s Deep Cleaner is the perfect solution to rid your grills of stubborn burnt on food. All you need to do is put the grates in the plastic bag provided and pour half to ¾ of the cleaning solution over them. Leave these to soak for a minimum of four hours or overnight for the best results, and then rinse thoroughly with hot soapy water. Top Tip: Cooking fresh food before cleaning grates (with old
burnt on grime) will give your food a bitter flavour and could ruin your chances of hosting a perfect BBQ 2. Don’t forget to clean the inside of your barbecue too. Start off by disposing of old ashes from the bottom of the barbecue and then pour the remaining cleaning solution into the tray. Wearing gloves, use a sponge to spread the solution around the whole tray and leave for a minimum of four hours, or overnight for best results. 3. The main cleaning event might be the barbecue, but let’s not forget every barbecue’s best friends… the spatula, skewer and cooking tongs. After all, how will you flip those burgers and turn your sausages? Make sure you give all of these utensils a deep clean in hot soapy water, to rid them of old grease and burnt on food, as over time this can be hazardous and also impact the flavour of your food. 4. And lastly, “How can I maintain this level of cleanliness for the rest of the summer we hear you say?” After each use, wait until the grates are lukewarm and give them a quick clean using a grill brush and hot soapy water, this way any food residue will be easier to remove.

Rugby World Cup winner presents Collyer’s Sport Awards
At the Annual Sports Awards Ceremony, successful Collyer’s students have been rewarded for their 2016/17 achievements at the Ofsted Outstanding college. The Duckering Hall event was attended by students, teachers and other members of the Collyer’s community. Collyer’s were also delighted to welcome Rugby World Cup winner, Becky Essex, who presented the awards at the ceremony. Head of Collyer’s Sport Academy, John Burroughs, said: “It is important that we reward students for outstanding ability as well as application across the year. Today’s prize winners regularly attended training, in addition to demonstrating superb team work and skills in their chosen sport. “It was an honour for us to welcome Becky Essex back to Collyer’s, where she studied in the early 2000s. She went on to win an astonishing 57 caps for England, numerous Grand Slams and the Rugby World Cup in 2014. We are so grateful to her for taking such an interest in Collyer’s sport.” During 2016/17 Collyer’s teams won numerous honours across a range of sports. These included: Surrey Sixth Form U19 League Championship title for the women’s football, a Sussex U19 League Championship title for netball, while the men’s football 1st won the Colleges south east division. The Most Improved Player (MIP) for women’s hockey prize went to Florence Mason, while Jemima Spurr was delighted to pick up Player of the Year (POY) award. In men’s hockey, Dan Casey (POY) and Oli Burke (MIP) came away with the honours, while Basketball’s POY was awarded to Nick Hutchinson, with the MIP prize won by Jeffrey
Wong. Women’s football POY was picked up by Felicity Love, with Juliette Berry winning the MIP prize. It is important that we reward students for outstanding ability as well as application across the year to Jack Thompson and Sam Jewell received the POY prize. The prizes were announced by the team of specialist coaches at Collyer’s, including Dominic Evans (basketball), Brannon O’Neil and Laura Carruthers (football) and Michelle Peckham (netball). Becky Essex was delighted to present the medals and silverware at the awards. She said: “It was a pleasure to honour the sporting successes and to celebrate the students’ achievement and commitment. Collyer’s has changed so much since I was a student; I’m so impressed with the sheer number of teams and sports available.
“Well done to all of the students and their brilliant teachers. I think events like these are really important, as it shows the college really values their students.” The climax of the awards ceremony saw John Burroughs announce the winners for the Team of the Year Award, which went to the outstanding Netball first team, the first time a team has won the prize two years in a row! John Burroughs said: “Massive thanks to our great coaching team and our superb athletes. These students are incredible young men and women and we are hugely proud of them.” Men’s rugby captain Owain Mcloughlin: “It is safe to say that we were all star-struck when Becky arrived. Our students and Vice Principal Steve Martell couldn’t get a photo with her fast enough!” Steve Martell said: “Becky Essex retired a Rugby World Cup Winner and remains a fantastic role model and inspiration for our students. John Burroughs and the coaches and I are of the firm belief that we are at the beginning of a golden generation of athletes, here at Collyer’s, and it was an honour to welcome Becky back to help motivate them to achieve even greater things in the future.” Collyer’s Head of Faculty for Business, Sport and Social Sciences James Gordon said: “These are exciting times for sport at Collyer’s as the first year of our new sports academies, in Basketball, Netball and Rugby, have proved extremely popular. We are certainly attracting elite players from across the region and we owe enormous thanks to John Burroughs for widening participation so wonderfully at Collyer’s.”

Horsham Promises to bloom again this summer Horsham in Bloom’s Summer Competition Season is here and we’re inviting all you keen, local gardeners to get involved! Whether you’re just doing your bit to keep Horsham looking beautiful for the wider community, or you’ve a grand front garden and impressive hanging baskets; a small plot with some handsome gnomes; allotment, or no garden at all, we’ve got a competition category for you. The big news this summer is we’ve introduced a new award; Growing Without Gardens is designed to recognise anyone who enjoys growing without the use of a conventional garden space. Entries must demonstrate imaginative use of limited conditions to produce a horticultural display, whether it’s in containers, baskets, wall space or balconies. Prizes for the lucky winners are Gold £75, Silver £50 and Bronze £25. With this new category in mind we decided to incorporate our Hanging Baskets and Containers Award into Front Gardens, so if you’ve got a front garden with or without hanging baskets, which you think has the Wow! Factor then we’re looking for you. The prizes in this category are worth Gold £150, Silver £100, Bronze £50. As well as that all-important Wow! Factor, Judges will be look-
ing for a good balance of planting, evidence of planning and maintenance and the absence of pests and diseases. Entries must be visible from the road or public access route and entrants do not need to be home for their space to be judged. Next up, it’s The Best Public House Competition. Last year’s winner, The Black Jug, created impressive year round, eyecatching displays and produced alternating summer and winter baskets - who’s up to the challenge? Prizes are worth £150 for Gold, £100 Silver and £50
Bronze. Our Community Services Competition is open to volunteer groups who maintain, what might otherwise be, neglected public spaces. They litter pick, keep rivers running
and ponds clear, and help to create spaces which, as well as being lovely spots for people to visit, are also invaluable environments for wildlife. At the other end of the scale, are people who create displays for sheltered housing schemes that even The
Chelsea Flower Show would be proud of. Prizes of Gold £100, Silver £75, Bronze £50 are awarded to the winners.
Last year’s Best Kept Allotment Award received so many fabulous entries, it took nearly three days to judge them all. If you’ve got beautiful brassicas, cracking courgettes, or a collection of flowers, herbs or vegetables you think will knock our socks off, we want you to enter this competition and have the chance to win prizes worth £100 for Gold, £50 for Silver and £25 for Bronze. Want to know what to do next? Fill in the form on this page and return it to: Horsham in Bloom Competitions, Parks & Countryside, Horsham District Council, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, RH12 1RL. Alternatively, email hibsecretary@gmail.com, requesting the relevant form for you. The closing date for all categories is Friday 30 June. Judging will take place mid-July. Summer competitions season would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, who we sincerely thank. *Prizes will be given in the form of garden centre vouchers only. **Entrants having won Gold in any category three years in a row, will not be considered.

cott to win the accolade at the ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Harry Tumber, Head of Collections, commented: “To have been selected as best in class by a judging panel of industry leaders, against the highest calibre of competition, speaks volumes about the experience and capability of our team, and our commitment to achieving the highest standard of collections conduct.” Adding: “During 2016 we deployed new strategies aimed at providing customers more infor-
mation about the process, earlier, instead of taking the traditionally abrupt approach of simply serving a Letter before Action. This has resulted in increased contact rates which helped to achieve a 19% increase in collections performance on behalf of our clients.” This is the second piece of good news for the firm, they have been announced as finalists for ‘Best Law Firm’ at the upcoming 2017 Car Finance Awards which take place in Nottingham on June 8th, coming off the back of the firm being the first law firm to achieve Approved status with the Finance and Leasing Association’s Specialist Automotive Finance (SAF) Training. Harry Tumber, commented: “To be named as Finalists at the Car Finance Awards recognises our focus, experience and successful results achieved for clients in this space. To support this, our SAF Approved status reinforces our knowledge of the sales process and provides our car finance clients with confidence that we are best equipped to deal with their legal collections and recovery matters.” For more information contact Harry Tumber on 01293 596905 or email harry.tumber@stevensdrake.com

Spark Energy acquires Horsham based broadband company On May 16, Spark Energy, the specialist energy supplier to the UK lettings sector, announced that it had acquired Home Telecom, the Horsham, West Sussex, based broadband company, in a deal described as “a perfect fit”. Spark’s acquisition of Home Telecom, a supplier of fixed telephony, broadband and entertainment packages to the tenanted market, is the company’s first since a management buyout (MBO) was completed in August 2016. Creating the first multi-utility company built around the needs of the growing rental sector, the deal builds out from Spark’s successful core gas and electricity products, which offer better service, lower costs and less hassle for large scale property managers, social housing bodies, government contracts and their tenants. Keen to build strong foundations through continued growth and improvement of core products and services, Chris stated that the company would bring more products and services to current and future customers. He explained: “We believe we can do more to help our partners improve their service and reduce their costs and to offer better experience for the millions of people renting in the UK. “With this acquisition, we are
strengthening our offering, creating more reasons for customers to join and stay with Spark and adding further value to our letting agent, social housing and property aggregator clients. Spark will continue to work with Global 4 Communications, also based in Horsham, which has been providing customer service and technical support to Home Telecom. Global 4 is a nationwide company which specialises in the delivery of tailored telecoms solutions to the non-domestic market. Global 4 CEO, and former shareholder of Home Telecom, Nigel Barnett, said “This deal is exciting to say the least. I’ve worked with Chris and his team for the last five years, and seeing first-hand how Spark has grown into a major player in the energy industry means this acquisition was the right decision for us. The ongoing support of my company, Global 4, means that customers will enjoy the same great service and competitive packages from day one and that Home Telecom will grow even faster.” Spark will now be able to offer all its customers and agents broadband and unique Sky deals, in a tenant-focused package, which can be from as little as six months in length with no exit penalties.

Geoff Norcott: Conswervative Geoff Norcott is possibly Britain’s only openly Conservative, leave-voting comedian and will be at The Hawth to explain some of his views on Friday 16 June. He’s the son of a trade unionist, who grew up on a council estate. As a result, Geoff often wonders how on earth he ended up leaning to the right. However, in the last 12 months, defending his light blue sympathies has become the least of Geoff’s problems. From having to justify his Leave vote to distancing himself from the rise of the sinister ‘alt-right’, Geoff is fire-fighting by turning his satirical eye on the hysteria and hypocrisies of the British liberal left. In his show ‘Conswervative’,
Geoff comes to terms with being a class traitor, while also taking uncompromising stances on issues ranging from depression, benefit fraud and the maudlin British obsession with the NHS. Geoff’s show includes a ‘heckle amnesty’ that allows people to take up any issues they have with the show or, indeed, him. For this section, audiences are also encouraged to bring their ideas to save the National Health Service. Geoff: “Would it do any harm if a doctor’s white coat was sponsored in the same way as a Formula 1 racing driver’s jacket?!” Performance: Fri 16 June 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio. Tickets, priced £13.50. available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or by visiting hawth.co.uk

Horsham Battle of the Bands 2017 There’s still time to enter this year’s Horsham Battle of the Bands! Head over to www.horshambotb.co.uk and choose from three categories - ORIGINALS, COVERS or ACOUSTIC ORIGINALS – to be in with a chance of playing the BotB Festival Weekend stage in the Human Nature Garden, Horsham Park on 19th & 20th August. The covers competition will take place on the Saturday afternoon with the final of the originals competition taking place in the evening. The event will then come to a close on the Sunday afternoon with the acoustic competition. Last year’s three winners THE FARMBOYS, FLYING LOW and HOLLIE ROGERS will each perform headline sets while the judges deliberate in each competition. All ORIGINALS bands that enter must also be available to take part in heats at Horsham Sports Club on the weekend of 7th & 8th July. Closing date for entries is the 1st July so you’ll need to be quick! Prizes to be won include a professional music video and photo-shoot, studio time, a single release package and more.
This year, the Festival Weekend will once again have a circus theme with workshops for kids, themed food and drink vendors and professional circus performers on site. Once closed for entries, the Horsham BotB website will also once again host an online People’s Choice poll where fans can get involved, check out the bands that have entered and vote for their favourites. A Little Jazz: 24 June, The Barn, Causeway, Horsham, 7.30pm The Chamber Choir’s next concert is a delightful fusion of the English choral tradition and jazz, with the music of our main composers being amongst the best of this style. John Rutter is perhaps best known for his carol arrangements and compositions, but has also written large scale choral works, such as Magnificat, which we performed in 2010. In our June concert, we sing some of his most popular anthems, including All things bright and beautiful, For the beauty of the earth, Look at the world and The Lord bless you and keep you. Bob Chilcott was a member of the King’s Singers for many years, during which time he worked with great figures from the jazz world, such as Johnny Dankworth, Richard Rodney Bennett and George Shearing. His A Little Jazz Mass has jazzy piano accompaniment, which can be supplemented with double bass (as we are doing, with Thomas Holder leaving our vocal bass section to play his instrumental bass). Each movement has its own character, featuring a relaxed bossa nova, energetic swing, jazz lullaby and blues. The combining of two very different

traditions - the Latin Mass and the jazz style - works completely naturally in the skilful hands of Chilcott and we are all (traditionalists included!) enjoying singing this! We are also performing his beautiful arrangement of ‘O Danny Boy’. George Shearing is the only one of our composers not alive – he died in 2011. Born congenitally blind, he first earned his daily bread playing piano in a pub, but went on to spend most of his life in America and enjoyed an international career as a pianist, arranger and composer, being equally at home on the concert stage as in jazz clubs. The first performance of Songs and Sonnets, in 1999, featured George Shearing himself at the piano with guest conductor John Rutter. The style of the music is unashamedly jazzy, with lots of rich harmony, and a variety of moods, but there are also plenty of references to madrigals of an earlier age too. Thomas Holder again joins the choir’s wonderful accompanist, Elizabeth Burtenshaw, on his bass. We are very lucky to have the composing talent of Mark Browse
in our choir bass section and are singing his setting of Walter de la Mare’s poem Music. Mark says of his piece: ‘ In 2011 the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus ran a composition competition to mark their centenary. Looking for a suitable text to set, I had the idea of finding a poem from the same time as the Chorus was founded. Walter de la Mare’s poem Music was in fact written in 1914, when the BSC was already two years old, but its subject matter—the transforming power of music— was so apt that it was immediately clear to me that this was the perfect choice. I’m pleased to say I won third prize and the BSC gave the first performance of Music in 2012’. We are also singing an anthem by Mark: Holy, heavenly love. The concert is in the Barn, Causeway, on Saturday 24 June starting at 7.30pm The bar will be open and the evening will definitely go with a swing. Tickets, £13 (under18s £6) available from members of the Choir, or can be reserved by calling 07730983314, or will be available at the door, subject to space limitations.

PETs POST Sponsored by
Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.
Dogs at work Is it a good idea?
Friday 23 June is national Bring Your Dog To Work Day - founded and organised by natural pet product manufacturer HOWND. Businesses from across the UK (including pet product businesses, marketing agencies, a private jet company, a housing association and even a regional police force) will welcome their dog loving employees into the workplace along with their loyal (and wellbehaved!) four-legged companions. The award-winning event, which has the support of celebrities, including Ricky Gervais and Rachel Riley, raises money for two official charities for 2017: All Dogs Matter, which rescues and rehomes hundreds of dogs each year in the UK, and Animals Asia, a charity foundation that saves dogs and cats from the corrupt meat trade in China and Vietnam. With just a week to go, Britain’s favourite day at the office is raising an interesting question: Do dogs belong in the workplace? Since its conception four years ago, Bring Your Dog To Work Day has become a regular staple in the national calendar. Recent figures support this thinking, with employment website Reed.co.uk estimating that 8% of employees in Britain have permission to bring their dogs to work. An American study, published in 2012, summarised that dogs at work may make a positive difference, by reducing stress levels in staff and increasing their levels of job satisfaction. This a view shared by the company BorrowMyDoggy, which regularly welcomes numerous canines into its headquarters in London. Instead of causing distraction in the workplace, the company believe a dog-friendly environment leads to happy staff. “There are so many studies that show the benefits of having dogs
in the workplace and we have definitely experienced those benefits first hand,” said Lynn Unick from BorrowMyDoggy, “They make us laugh, they make us smile and their contribution to the overall atmosphere in the office is wonderful. I would absolutely encourage other companies to introduce a pet friendly policy. It’s fantastic for company morale and brings so much happiness into the working day.” It was a ‘no dogs allowed’ work policy - coupled with the benefits of dogs in the workplace - that led to the creation of Bring Your Dog To Work Day by Mark Hirschel and Jo Amit, the co-founders of pet product company HOWND. Jo explained: “We have always brought our dogs, Roxy and Laila, to work with us, but when we moved into new offices back in 2014, we discovered that they weren’t allowed in the premises. This inspired us to create an event that publicised why dogs can make a positive difference in safe work environments, in an attempt to encourage companies across the UK to adopt dog friendly policies.” Ahead of this year’s event, HOWND has published ‘7 HR Guidelines’ after being asked for advice from a number of officebased organisations: Written consent should be obtained from every office employee ahead of Bring Your Dog to Work Day; An accurate record of all dogs in the workplace should be kept; Each dog coming to the workplace should be kept on a leash while walking in the building as well as outside, and should have an identity tag with the owner’s contact details; Dogs must be clean and well-groomed ahead of their day at work; Dogs should be well socialised i.e. good natured and comfortable around dogs and people; Each participating employee should bring a ‘Dog Packed Lunch’ - in-
cluding treats, toys, a lead, water bowl, and food; Each participating employee should also bring appropriate bedding for their dog, i.e. dog basket, mat or rug, to enure the working day is as comfortable as possible! “We’re overwhelmed with how successful Bring Your Dog To Work Day has become. It’s been amazing to see how many people have posted their dogs at work across all social media in 2014, 2015 and 2016,” added Jo “Most importantly, it’s fantastic to raise money for All Dogs Matter and Animals Asia. We’re hopeful that this year will prove even more popular, building on the momentum of 2016.” One interesting dynamic of dogs at work is the way they can help establish routines and work roles. PetsPyjamas is a company that has experienced this first hand. As advocates of dogs in the workplace, PetsPyjamas has a comprehensive four-legged workforce, put to task with roles such as product-testng from the 10,000 pet accessories listed to their online marketplace, as well as inspecting some of the 2,000+ truly pet-welcoming hotels, cottages, country houses and B&Bs around the UK and Europe. Gracia Amico, CEO of PetsPyjamas, said: “We’re thrilled to be part of Bring Your Dog To Work Day. As true advocates for dogs at work and champions of all dog lifestyle, we hope to spread awareness of this fantastic initiative to raise money for animal charities.” But the benefits of dogs in the workplace extend beyond employee wellbeing. According to jet hire company, PrivateFly, their office labradoodle, Tex, has proven to be an effective tool for winning new business and communicating with colleagues. “You can meet some great contacts on a dog walk. It’s a natural icebreaker and you can find yourself striking up conversations with strangers in a park, that would simply not happen otherwise. I met a new private jet client recently while on a run,” explained Adam Twidell from PrivateFly “Tex gets me – or someone else in the team – out of the office, even on the busiest days. I’ve had some of my best meetings with colleagues when walking to the park, getting a breath of fresh air. You can’t be chained to your desk when your dog needs a walk.” For further information about Bring Your Dog To Work Day please visit the official website, or email hello@bringyourdogtoworkday.co.uk.
Top vet dog-tired of pug health problems, highlights BBC Radio 4 Today “Celebrities, advertisers and the public must stop normalising flat-faced dogs’ health problems for the sake of animal welfare”, said British Veterinary Association (BVA) President, Gudrun Ravetz, on BBC Radio 4’s Today. Talking on the programme about the health and welfare issues faced by flat-faced or brachycephalic dogs, such as Pugs, French bulldogs and British bulldogs, the BVA President made it clear that what is seen as “normal” and cute for these dogs, such as snorting and snuffling, is in reality a result of debilitating respiratory problems due to the squashed faces that have made them the dogs du jour. The problems are so severe that many of these dogs suffer breathing difficulties even when doing day-to-day activities like walking or eating. Today also outlined a recent Kennel Club report showed that all flat-faced breeds have experienced a huge boom in popularity recently, with the French
bulldog soon set to be the most popular breed in the UK. They also highlighted that media, advertising and celebrity owners have helped drive the appeal of, and increase the demand for these breeds. Following the interview, Gudrun said: “We shouldn’t be buying and breeding dogs on the way we want them to look - it should always be about prioritising welfare above appearance. These are breeds that can suffer just by walking around or eating, which is why we’re calling on the media and advertisers to stop using them in their adverts. It is also difficult to turn on the TV, check Instagram or see a celebrity photo without also seeing a brachycephalic breed, so it’s not surprising that demand for these dogs is rising. “And we would also encourage anyone considering getting a brachycephalic breed to speak to their local vet and think about choosing a healthier breed or crossbreed instead.”

Atlantis Here There And Everywhere
The bank holiday weekend was not a weekend off for the Atlantis swimming team with many of the clubs swimmers travelling near and far to compete in a range of competitions. Destinations for the busy period were Crawley, Bognor, Portsmouth, London, Plymouth and Cardiff! K2 Crawley saw the final weekend of this years South East Regional Championships with some of the clubs elite under 15 year olds competing against the best swimmers in the South of England representing 80 different swimming clubs. This year Atlantis had a record number of swimmers qualify with some outstanding performances. Amber Ranson continued to brush away her opposition and brought home six medals. She showed particular dominance in the
freestyle and backstroke events a particular highlight being her time of 32.52 seconds in the 50m backstroke final. Jacob Davis completed a full compliment of medals in the breaststroke events achieving bronze, silver and gold medals and setting himself up nicely for inclusion in the National Swimming Championships later this year. Olivia Round Pitman and Issy Hayes also pitched in with solid performances both making multiple final appearances and just missing out on medals. Ryan Gant, Millie Weeden,Emma Harrison and Becs Barber also represented well in the breaststroke events. Popular squad member Ethel Whyman showed real guts and swam commendably despite suffering an on going injury. Regional Squad Coach Bill
Penny was delighted with the teams performance, being one of the most successful Regional Championships for Atlantis Swimming Club and showing some real promise for future success from his swimmers. Away from Regionals and off to Wales with Aiden Sparling and Beth Britton performing well in multiple freestyle events. A great 50 metre swim of 24.46 earned Sparling a well deserved silver medal. Being the clubs only representative at the London Aquatic Centre didn’t deter Zoe Cawsey who swam a breathtaking 50m backstroke in a time of 30.67 giving her a new Sussex county record! Training partner Lily Davis was busy in Plymouth winning a silver medal in the 50m breaststroke and moving her up four places in the national rankings. While Portsmouth saw some good swimming from Freya Fulcher, Toby Van Der Hut and Amelia Wright who won the 200m breast. The clubs younger swimmers did themselves proud with lots of personal bests at the Bognor Regis Gala, we look forward to seeing their progress in the future. ‘Dedication and hard work rewards’,is a sentiment that is clearly demonstrated by the Atlantis Team. Hours of hard work training and sacrifices made by swimmers, coaches, volunteers and parents for well deserved successes throughout the club and a promising future for all at Atlantis Horsham.
Triple success sees Pulborough fying high
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC The first of 2 league games of the week saw Pulborough BC travel to Bognor to face the RAFA club in the Brookes Motors League at 6pm. 2 triples played a competitive 18 ends, with both games going Pulborough’s way! Skip, Len Adsett, with Pauline Adsett and Mick Ayling in support, had a strong game, with a 5 on end 12 catapulting them ahead to finish 18/10! Top rink by a country mile, went to skip and Captain, Paul Day, with Julie Day as lead and Chris Etherington as number 2, only allowing their opponents 4
winning ends and pinning them on just 6 shots to Pulborough’s 31! The full 6 points go to Pulborough, who came top of the league in 2016. Pulborough played Maltravers at home in the WSBL on Thurs at 6pm. 4 rinks of men played, with a mixed result of 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, giving 7 points from a possible 10, a fantastic result against tough opponents! Top rink for Pulborough went to Paul Day, Adey Stratton, Mick Ralph and Steve Adsett with a 29/10 result! The final score was 99/65 to Pulborough! A club day on Sat heralded the return of the game of killer and a competitive streak in some of the
players not witnessed outside of league fixtures! Just 12 members took to the green, but the banter was something to behold! Of the 4 players that made it to the finals, Jane Gray and Mick Ayling had the final 2 shots, with Mick coming out on top. A long-awaited fixture returned to the calendar on Sunday 11th, when Grafham returned to the Pulborough green after an absence of over a decade! It was fantastic to see a high percentage of lady members on the Grafham side, with Captain Wendy giving the Pulborough Captain, Paul, a run for his money! The scores were tied until the 12th end, when Adey, Jane and Paul finally got the better of the green to pull ahead and win 16/12. Malcolm Gray and team managed 20/14, after some heavy scoring pulled them ahead from the 8th end so it really does “ all change after tea”! Top rink went to skip, Ivan Salmon, with George Lewis as lead and Mick Ayling as number 2, 20/9. The final result was a friendly 56/35 to Pulborough and quite a few drinks at the bar! Pulborough next play at home to Crablands in the BML on Weds, away against Tarring Priory in the WSBL on Sat from 2pm and away against Storrington in the BML on Sun from 2pm, spectators always welcome!

Roffey slump to unaccustomed defeat Saturday June 11 – Sussex Premier League Cuckfield 215-9 (58 overs) Roffey 143 all out (46.1 overs) Cuckfield won by 72 runs – Cuckfield 30 points, Roffey 9 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last season Roffey had two tight games against more than useful Cuckfield, but this time there was a one-sided result - in Cuckfield’s favour. Roffey won the toss and, as they often do, inserted the opposition. Destructive New Zealand test opener Jeet Raval was a key wicket and Rohit Jagota had him caught behind for 13. But, fellow opener, former Horsham player Joe Ludlow, proved to be the only real difference between the two sides. Wickets fell, leaving Cuckfield on a precarious 94-6 with another Roffey win surely beckoning - Ludlow, though, built his innings well, going on to post an unbeaten 117, piloting his team to a target of 216 with assistance from Sussex’s Abidine Sakande (33) and 22 from Harry Clark. Luke Barnard and George Fleming each took three wickets, while Jagota
had two and Ben Manenti one. In response Roffey were soon 12-2. Although they staged a partial recovery, wickets continued to fall despite 33 from Manenti and 31 from Jibran Khan, Roffey slipping to unaccustomed defeat, Sakande taking 4-28 and Nick Patterson 4-41. Roffey skipper Matt Davies said: “Joe Ludlow is a good bat, but we let them off the hook – their last four wickets put on 121
Joe Ludlow is a good bat, but we let them off the hook and our batting never really got going. That defeat moves us down from top to third, one point behind Cuckfield, but its early days yet!” Roffey return home tomorrow (Saturday) to welcome Hastings, the East Sussex side hovering one place above basement teams Bexhill and Ansty.

Have Breakfast with Rob Andrew – and the Lions !
Oxley and Clark propel Horsham into Quarter Final Saturday June 11 - Sussex GrayNicholls T20 Cup – Round 2 Horsham 147-6 (20 overs) – Three Bridges 114 all out (18.4 overs) Horsham won by 33 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket & Sports Club have pulled off a major coup and are delighted to give local sports fans the unique opportunity to have breakfast with Rob Andrew - One of the giants of British sport – and to watch the second Lions Test live on the big screen from New Zealand’s Wellington “Caketin” Stadium. The breakfast is on Saturday July 1 at Horsham Cricket Club – and it will be a feast, on the plate and on the screen, with the opportunity to quiz Rob Andrew in the Q & A session at half time. Rob Andrew‘s sporting credentials put him at the very pinnacle of British achievement. His CV almost reads like a Roy of the Rovers story – captain of rugby at school, where he played with
another superstar – Rory Underwood – before playing more than 70 games for England as fly half, ace kicker and defender in the Will Carling era. Andrew’s stellar career included two games as Captain, plus Lions’ matches, notching up over 400 points on the international stage. Andrew played in three World Cups and skippered the Lions against France. He also had long and outstanding rugby stints with Nottingham, Wasps, Toulouse and Newcastle before going on to be a senior administrator at the RFU. And, not content with his rugby exploits, Rob also played first class cricket when he was at Cambridge University, including appearances for Combined Universities, a century against Lancashire and bowling out future England cricket captain Michael Atherton for a duck, before going
on to play for Yorkshire 2nd XI, Sussex’s Chris Nash telling the District Post: “Rob’s an absolute cricket nut!” Horsham Cricket Club’s Shaka Shambrook says: “This is a major fund raiser for the Sussex Cricket Foundation and we’ve got Rob Andrew, plus top rugby, a full English breakfast and Bucks Fizz. An absolute snip at £20! But, be quick because we’ve only got 120 tickets and they’re going like hot cakes – or hot breakfasts! Jenny Wise, our catering supremo is doing a fantastic job, so the Rob Andrew breakfast is not to be missed!” For the breakfast Horsham Cricket Club will be open at 7.45am and there will be three sittings – 8am, 8.45 and 9.30 with tickets available from the club office and bar. Horsham thrash Brighton with 53 overs to spare Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Saturday June 10 - Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 123 All Out (41.4 overs) Horsham 127-2 (15.1 overs) Horsham won by 8 wickets – Horsham 30 points, Brighton none Cricket
As we were recently reminded, a week is a long time in politics. The same is true of cricket – a week before the Brighton & Hove game Horsham suffered a nightmare defeat, but they regrouped, crushing the seasiders without mercy. Brighton were soon in trouble, Mika Ekstrom taking three quick wickets in a devastating opening spell from the railway end. The visitors recovered from 27-3 with a 55 run stand while Ekstrom was rested, but when he returned, bowling in tandem with Michael Munday, Brighton’s innings evaporated. Last year at Horsham Brighton were bowled out for 135, Horsham winning by 8 wickets. This year they could only muster 123, and the result was the same, the game ending at 4.05. Last year Munday took 6-10 (and later 8-64 at Brighton), this year he took 5-33, including the crucial scalp of Sussex’s Philip Salt, who top-scored with 41 but dawdled off shaking his head saying: “He’s a good bowler! He did me LBW with a googly - I’m not the first batsman he’s done that too, and I won’t be the last!” Only four other batsmen made double figures, Ek-
strom, finishing with 5-21, telling the District Post: “After playing on the harder wickets in South Africa I’ve learned that I need to bowl a fuller length here, so I did that!” Two other LBWs were among Munday’s victims, including a trademark dismissal when a batsman boosted by a big hit promptly succumbed next ball. Brighton then found themselves leather hunting as Ryan Maskell and Craig Gallagher traded sixes – four each, the momentum not slowing when Maskell left for 36, sixteen year old Tom Clark on his seasonal debut taking over with 4 fours. But it was Gallagher who stole the batting show, his unbeaten vintage 39 ball 70 featuring eight boundaries in addition to his sixes. Horsham move up to fourth in the table, Captain Michael Thornely saying: “I’m surprised that Brighton chose to bat first, the wicket was a bit damp and therefore an unknown quantity. It was great to bounce back with a big win – once we got Salt out that was it, really.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham make the long trip to strugglers Bexhill, in the relegation zone despite beating bottom club Ansty (who have lost all of their six matches to date).
Cup holders Horsham won easily enough in the end after surviving a mid innings wobble and a Three Bridges charge, two teenagers – Tom Clark and Nick Oxley – turning in outstanding performances. Former Sussex Premier League side Three Bridges won the toss, inserted Horsham and were immediately assaulted by Craig Gallagher with 3 fours and a six in the first over. But, after three wickets went down, including Will Beer’s, Captain Michael Thornely (29) had to steady the ship with Nick Oxley, who made 24 before Tom Johnson top-scored with 31 - including 4 fours and a six. A target of 148 was useful rather Nick Oxley
than daunting and, although they lost early wickets, Three Bridges recovered well, causing some concern in the Horsham ranks. But, two Sussex Academy players – 16 year old Tom Clark and 17 year old Oxley snaffled four wickets each – the last eight of the innings - both conceding just 18 runs as Three Bridges subsided from a promising position to a bigger than anticipated defeat. Nick Oxley told the District Post: “We weren’t quite sure about the wicket – initially we thought 180 or 190 might be a par score, but, the way Craig set off we wondered if we could better that. Yet, when I went in we were in a bit of trouble so Michael Thornely and I had to rebuild to make sure that we posted a decent challenge. They were well placed just needing 50 off 39 balls and were whacking it, so it was good to get among the wickets!” In the Quarter Final on Sunday July 2, Horsham have a potentially tough visit to East Grinstead.
Tom Clark
Thunderous Davies ton launches Roffey into QF Saturday June 11 - Sussex GrayNicholls T20 Cup – Round 2 Roffey 239-2 (20 overs) – Three Bridges 116-7 (20 overs) Roffey won by 123 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst were unfortunate to encounter Roffey in particularly brutal mode. Roffey do not often lose at home and, during this game there was never any probability that the trend would be reversed. Roffey won the toss, Ben Manenti clubbing 9 fours and 5 sixes in his 16 ball 41, and even when he was caught in the deep and another wicket fell, the onslaught continued. Rohit Jagota came in at number 4 and the race was on to see whether he or opener Matt Davies would reach 50 first. Jagota finished unbeaten on 61 from 26 balls with 4 languid sixes, but skipper Davies went into overdrive, completing a stunning hundred, launching balls into surrounding gardens, creating fear around the neighbourhood. The Roffey innings contained 21 fours and 16 sixes, reaching
an alarming crescendo when a big hit landed on a car in Bostock Avenue, setting off sporadic screeching, followed by a Billingshurst player rushing from the field to quell his noisy vehicle. Billingshurst’s bowling figures are best not dwelt upon. Any opposition would find a 12 an over target very demanding, but Billingshurst got off to a good start, putting on 49 for the first wicket, Stuart Barber and Captain Tom Haynes getting twenties, followed by 19 from Edward Verrall, but that was as good as it got. With the run rate escalating, wickets tumbled – Manenti grabbing 3-13, George Fleming 2-14 and Tom Barnes and Theo Rivers one each, Billingshurst fading from 97-4 to 116-7 at the close. Matt Davies modestly played down his first century for the senior team, merely telling us: “It was OK, but Billingshurst didn’t have their full side out.” But, hats off to Billingshurst for honouring the fixture at a time when, having entered a tournament, clubs are pulling out, as did Middleton in this round, giving East Grinstead a walkover. Roffey entertain Worthing in the Quarter Final on Sunday July 2.
