Horsham’s Henfield Hire helping at Grenfell Tower fire tragedy martin read
Reporter
Many have watched the harrowing television pictures of the devastating fire at the Grenfell Tower high rise block of flats in London’s Notting Hill with a feeling of helplessness – wanting to help, but not really knowing what to do. But, Henfield Hire’s Operations Manager Darren Sawyers grabbed the initiative and telephoned the local council – Kensington & Chelsea – to see what assistance Henfield Hire might be able to give. After initially drawing a blank but committed to help, the company persisted, contacting the Methodist Church in Lancaster Road, near to the tower, not far from London’s iconic Portobello Road market. The church are holding nightly vigils at 8pm and, with so much needing to be done to support the victims of the tragedy, are providing a raft of practical help - and a Henfield van was soon on its way. Darren told the District Post: “The tower was a ghostly figure, still burning when we arrived, the smell was awful, taking our breath away. It was really frightening but we were lifted by the huge community spirit at the church. We met Miranda there – she is a teacher at a school attended by children from the tower and so is badly affected, like
so many in the district. Although everyone was very upset, a human chain soon formed to bring things up from the basement to load into our van for us to deliver to the response centres.” Dan Britton of Horsham’s Nightingale Road’s Henfield Hire also made the trip, saying: “In addition to cars we have many vans and trucks available and felt that we should be able to do something useful. But, it was very difficult to look at the tower, and a very emotional, surreal experience just to be near the site, but the heart-warming generosity that we found was so encouraging, almost over-whelming and we’re hoping to make another run up there.” The Notting Hill area of West London around the tower is very mixed and diverse, one of the original Caribbean communities emerging in the late 1940s among the large pleasant houses occupied by affluent families. The 24 storey Grenfell Tower – named after nearby Grenfell Road – was erected in the early 70s, just a few years after the first Notting Hill Carnival. Darren Sawyers summed up, telling us: “Linford Christie – Jamaican born - visited and donated some things for fund raising, along with Adele. Everyone is rallying round: we’ve got another van loaded with food and supplies and are ready to go again as soon as we get the call.”

Farlington’s Prep 2 girls treated their fathers to a fun-packed afternoon of Forest School activities on Friday 16 June. The fathers were welcomed to Farlington by their six-and seven-year-olds, Mrs Willis and Mrs Hunting. They were then led to the Forest School area where they were given a safety talk by their daughters. The fathers and daughters spent the afternoon working together in Farlington’s beautiful
grounds – sparking a fire, denmaking, tree-hugging, tightrope walking and map reading. The afternoon ended with refreshments and delicious Rocky Roads made by the girls. The girls loved spending quality time with their fathers and working with them in the Forest School area, while the fathers gained a real insight into the girls’ outdoor learning. All involved agreed that it was a great way to celebrate Father’s Day.
Award winning scriptwriters and authors, Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler, called in to St Mary’s School, Pulborough, on Tuesday 13 June to entertain and inspire children in Years 5 & 6 with their new book, Defender of the Realm: Dark Age. Huckerby & Ostler are an Emmy-winning and BAFTAnominated writing partnership behind the incredibly popular TV shows of Dangermouse, Thunderbirds Are Go, Peter Rabbit, Shaun the Sheep and many others. The authors have just released their second novel which follows on from their first fantasy adventure book, Defender of the Realm, published earlier this year. They are already in the process of creating the third book in the
series. Mark and Nick entertained the children of St Mary’s with teaser trailer film, dressed up as Vikings to teach them a few Norse words, and more seriously talked about what it’s like to be a writer and showing the children photos of the writing rooms at the BBC and at their homes. Sam Copus, deputy head teacher at St Mary’s Pulborough, said, “It was a great afternoon full of laughter and the children also listened intently to the tips and advice from Mark and Nick for more than an hour. Their amazing talent for writing such entertaining stories and scripts will hopefully be inspiring many of our children to follow their lead when it comes to their own story-telling.”

bled pupils at Woodlands Meed, a special needs school in Burgess Hill, following a community project led by a team of volunteers from gas distribution company SGN. An uneven pathway around the school grounds made it difficult, for pupils in wheelchairs, to get out into the fresh air at break times. When they heard about this, an eight-strong team from SGN’s Sus-
sex depot enlisted the help of four volunteers from their contractor, Cappagh, to lay a new pathway. The volunteers also rolled up their sleeves to tidy the school grounds, clearing 30 giant rubbish bags full of leaves, brambles and bracken – enough to fill an extra large skip. The idea for helping out at the school came from Steve Hands, a Connections Team Manager at SGN’s Sussex depot in Horsham, whose son is a pupil there. Steve
Business Performance Manager, Kristina Brown, was one of those who accompanied Steve on the day. She said: “We had a great day and the weather was kind to us. After clearing at least thirty huge bags of leaves, we were all worn out. It was such a great team effort.” David Anning, Business Manager for Woodlands Meed School, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the new path. It means that wheelchair access is much easier for big and small wheels alike, and our disabled pupils are already reaping the benefits of being able to get out in the fresh air during their break times.”

Horsham school children compete for National Title
Southwater Junior Academy team takes part in the ESFA Danone Nations Cup finals A team of Horsham primary schoolchildren competed against the best young talent in the country in the National Finals of the Danone Nations Cup, the England leg of the world’s biggest football tournament for 10-12 year olds. Having triumphed earlier in the year, in the county knockout rounds and the resulting South East regional final, the Southwater Junior Academy team competed at Stoke City FC Stadium in the Schools’ Cup at the ESFA Danone Nations Cup National Finals on
Saturday 20 May. Southwater began the day looking to put in a strong early showing and book their place in the knockout rounds. But despite some fantastic team displays, Southwater’s remarkable run was to go no further. Paul Showell, PE instructor from Southwater Junior Academy, said: “We’re so very proud of our team, they’ve worked so hard for many years to get to this level, and the National Finals are the icing on the cake as they approach the end of their time at Southwater Junior Academy. This team have played together since Year 3, and it was
fantastic to see them playing on such a huge stage. “It was an incredible experience for the team to play at a Premier League-stadium at Stoke City FC. Being part of the National Finals as one of the top eight teams in England is such a fantastic achievement, which goes to show how far we’ve come, not only as a team, but as a whole school. It’s been a roller-coaster of a final year for the team and their supporters, with three penalty shoot-outs and lots of amazing memories to take away! We may not have played as well as we can on the day, but we remain fantastically proud of each and every one of them. Not many people can say they have scored from the half-way line at a Premier league ground, but Frankie Mills can say he has, twice!” Marie Wendling, PR and events manager at Danone, commented: “Congratulations to the Southwater Junior Academy, who had a sensational tournament. They played extremely well throughout the numerous rounds and have been an absolute credit to Horsham. The local community really got behind the team and the support paid off, I have no doubt that this is not the last we’ll see of them.” Former Tottenham, Liverpool and England centre back John
Scales, ambassador of the tournament added: “Hats off to the team for an outstanding performance at the National Finals. I watched several of their games and was taken aback by just how well they represented the values that this tournament is all about. They were an absolute privilege to watch and I hope to see them again! “I am proud to have so closely supported the Danone Nations Cup for more than 10 years now. It’s a truly remarkable project that brings joy to thousands of kids nationally. Being active, eating well, having fun and working hard as part of a team are fundamental pillars of influencing the many that participate and these were all on show at this year’s finals.” 2.5m children worldwide take part in the competition each year, with 3,000 schools competing in the English leg run by the English Schools’ Football Association. The Danone Nations Cup is a unique FIFA approved tournament, which has been given the Government’s ‘Inspired by 2012’ seal of approval. It is an annual highlight in Danone’s ongoing programme of support for healthy lifestyles through education, fun and fairplay, which includes its ‘Eat Like A Champ’ healthy eating initiative.
Builders ‘bringing home the bacon’ at free demo day The South East may have been enjoying a heatwave, but builders visiting DW Nye on Monday were getting ready for winter, by finding out about the latest products on offer, including an innovative new waterproofing system that can be applied to roofs in as low as -5 degrees celcius. In the first of a series of demo days being hosted in 2017, the builders merchant, which is located on the A24 in Kingsfold, gave away free bacon butties and hot drinks to all visitors. A selection of key suppliers was on hand to provide advice and showcase their new products. One of the demonstrations being displayed during the day was EasyTrim’s revolutionary new liquid waterproofing membrane, which has been formulated to produce a fast curing, seamless, tough and elastic system that can be used on flat and pitched roofs. The innovative waterproofing system negates the need for primer and will cure in less than 30 minutes. Rex Nye, owner and Managing Director at DW Nye, said: “Thanks to all our suppliers who took part in our demo day and to everyone who attended. The bacon butties certainly went down well, despite it being one of the hottest days of the year! DW Nye’s next Demo Day will be in September. Find out more at www.dwnye.co.uk.

Think of others during the heat ‘Look out for your vulnerable friends and neighbours’, is the message being shared with residents as hot weather hits the county. The Met Office’s three-month contingency planner is predicting above-average temperatures until the start of September and a Level Two heat-health alert (indicating that residents need to be alert and ready) had, last week, been declared. People are being encouraged to keep an eye out for anyone who might need help maintaining their health and wellbeing, or struggle to cope in the hot weather. High temperatures - especially those early on in the summer catching people out - can be dangerous, particularly for the very young, elderly, or those with serious health conditions. Very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Stronger, Safer Communities, said: “To most of us, the summer weather means barbeques and beaches, but there are others who we need to help and protect during heatwaves. The health effects of intense heat can come on very quickly, so think about your neighbours, friends and family – help them to keep cool. “A well-known tip is to drink lots of cold drinks, but other useful advice is taking a cool shower, sprinkling water over the skin or
clothing, or keeping a damp cloth on the back of your neck. Stay safe and enjoy the summer.” Advice for hot weather: • Keep out of the sun between 11.00am and 3.00pm • If you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat and light scarf • Avoid extreme physical exertion • Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes. • Keep your living space cool • Keep windows that are exposed to the sun closed during the day, and open windows at night when the temperature has dropped • Close curtains that receive morning or afternoon sun • Keep indoor plants and bowls of water in the house as evaporation helps cool the air Anyone worried about their health during hot weather or a heatwave, especially if taking medication, feeling unwell or having any unusual symptoms, such as cramp in arms, legs or stomach, weaknesses or problems sleeping, should contact their doctor, speak to a pharmacist, or call NHS 111 or visit the website at: www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. Alternatively, get a neighbour or friend to help you get help. For more information about hot weather and health, please visit: http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ livig/emergency_services/preparing_and_dealing_with/severe_ weather/heatwave.aspx.

‘Lost gardens of Bramber’ open for National Garden Scheme
Since the remarkable discovery of the ‘Lost Gardens of Bramber’ in 1997, Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton, of St Mary’s House in Bramber, were able to rescue them back after fifty years of neglect. At that time, the gardens were a picture of dereliction, overgrown with an impenetrable jungle of brambles, nettles and saplings. Today and tomorrow (Sat 24 June), visitors to St Mary’s will be able to view, in support of the National Gardens Scheme, the amazing
transformation which has taken place over the last twenty years, thanks to curator Roger Linton’s ingenious designs and the hard work of his enthusiastic team of volunteer gardeners. These days, visitors feel as though they have entered another world – not a jungle after all, but a riot of colour in the magnificent Rose Garden, planted for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee; a colourful ‘terracotta’ garden; the rare pineapple pits with the restored stove-house; and the magnificent 140 foot (43m) Victorian brick fruit wall. The Victorian potting shed now houses a Rural Museum of horticultural implements. The former circular orchard has been transformed into a tranquil Poetry Garden, with a bust of Byron as its central focus. Another recent development is the Landscape Water Garden, complete with an island and waterfall, in its beautiful and tranquil semiwoodland setting. The universal excitement at the discovery of these ‘lost gardens’ can hardly be imagined. Originally laid out in the 1890s as three and a half acres of kitchen and pleasure gardens, the exciting programme of restoration has brought the Lost Gardens of Bramber back to life. The recently-restored glasshouse, which was opened last year by Lady Egremont of Petworth House, is the
only survivor out of five original 19th-century glasshouses. This wiill be open for plant sales. Visitors can also enjoy the great charm of the formal gardens surrounding the fine medieval timberframed house. There are a number of amusing topiary subjects: a large topiary snail reminds drivers to take care as they enter the car-park. Beyond the parterres, visitors are surprised by a spirited topiary bull with flying tail, a bobtailed hare in box and a bulbouseyed frog (or hippopotamus!) on a lily-pad. In front of the house is a riot of hollyhocks, looking resplendent in their summer colours. There is also a magnificent example of the prehistoric ‘living fossil tree’, ginkgo biloba, and colourful herbaceous borders. Visitors can enjoy tea and cake in the charming cottage-style tea room. The gardens will be open for the National Gardens Scheme between 2pm and 5.30pm. Entrance: £5.50 (children free). The house and gardens are also open to the end of September on Sundays, Thursdays and Bank Holiday Mondays, plus Wednesdays in August, 2pm to 6 pm (last entry 5pm). A full programme of concerts and events is available; for more information, telephone: 01903 816205, or visit the website: www. stmarysbramber.co.uk.

The Cake Tasting Club is turning One... Cake All Round!
The Cake Tasting Club is an online subscription business run by two busy Horsham Mamas, Dom and Vikki. The pair started the business last year, in order to make work fit around family life whilst doing something they love. The business had a great first year, quickly gaining over 6000 followers on social media, which saw Dom and Vikki move on, from cooking at home, to find new premises, where they could operate 6 ovens simultaneously, to keep up with demand.
With the rise in popularity of subscription businesses, Vikki and Dom saw an opportunity and came together to set up The Cake Tasting Club. They post fresh handmade cakes, throughout the UK once a month, to both members and as gifts. They designed their product to be both letterbox friendly and feel like a real treat, taking care to wrap everything beautifully and include complimentary handwritten gift notes. The ladies celebrated their first birthday with an amazing pho-
toshoot at fellow local business Openhaus Kitchens, Pease Pottage. The stunning kitchens at Openhaus were the perfect backdrop to showcase their delicious bakes. Dom and Vikki first started the business with just one product – The Classic box. This letterbox friendly parcel contains a different selection every month of cake, brownies and biscuits. Over the last year they have used social media to connect with their customers. Vikki commented: “As a small business we can continue to develop our products with our customers’ help. Dom’s legendary brownies are so popular that we decided to launch a Brownie Box”. Alongside the Classic box, the range now includes a Brownie box, a Cake for One Box and a weekly Salted caramel brownie box. The Brownie box contains 6 portions of brownie of three different flavours and the Cake for One box contains 2 bakes – a combination of either cake, brownie or biscuits. A Vegan box and a gluten free range are currently being developed. Due to customer requests for more brownies their latest offering is a Salted Caramel Brownie Box, which can be ordered weekly. This is an ideal top up between the monthly boxes! Instagram has played a key role in helping Dom and Vikki grow their business. Vikki explained: “Instagram has put us in touch with other small businesses and
bloggers, which has helped us grow our business. We are a stockist for Don’t Buy Her Flowers, run by entrepreneur Steph Douglas. Steph has been a huge help and inspiration to us this past year and has also put us in touch with many contacts.” Vikki and Dom have built a community of Cake loving customers who receive their boxes every month: “What a year it’s been, we are so so thankful to all our lovely subscribers and customers and feel so lucky with each and every order we receive.” said Dom, “This little business allows us to balance working life, fulfilling our passion creating cakey joy, with being parents.” The pair receive great feedback from their customers: “I received my first brownie box and WOW! Never have I tasted brownies like the ones in the lovely packaged box.” Hayley Booth via Facebook. To celebrate their birthday, and because The Cake Tasting Club love Horsham and bringing joy to people through cake, you can get your first Classic box on subscription for only £8 (RRP £15) with the code HORSHAM. This offer expires on the 31 July 2017. Working with such a dynamic group has been highly invigorating for all the staff in the Art department, and the ambition and skill level of this cohort has shown maturity and dexterity beyond their years and experience, combining to make a highly memorable exhibition and setting an excellent example for future years.”

In addition to a host of walking, cycling and running events, Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice has added a 5km military-style mud run to its events calendar for 2017. Taking place on Sunday 9 July, at the award-winning Nuts Challenge course at Henfold Lakes near Dorking, Operation: MUD is open to individuals and teams, and perfect for those looking for a slightly different charity challenge this summer. Set on one of the muddiest courses in the UK, the event is packed full of challenges from start to finish, with over 60 man-made and natural obstacles, involving climbing, crawling and a water assault course. One of the first teams to register for Operation: MUD was ‘Team GL’ – made up of six people from
involved in!” Nicky Ifould, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House, said: “We need to raise £6,850 each day to pay for all the specialist care services provided by Chestnut Tree House, so fundraising events like this are invaluable. We’re hoping this new event will appeal to lots of different people, and it has already attracted a number of corporate teams, as well as groups of friends signing up to take part together. I’ve no doubt Operation: MUD will be a tough course, but it should be fun too!” Chestnut Tree House provides care and support to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions, and their families, across East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire. The cost of providing this vital service is over £3.5 million per year, yet the hospice receives less than 7% central government funding, so relies heavily on the support of the local community to continue providing vital care to local children and families. The first 100 entries for Operation: MUD will be offered a reduced early bird rate of £39 (standard price £44). For more details, or to register, please visit: www. chestnuttree-house. org.uk/operationmud/.
Amidst the busy exam season for sixth formers in schools, ambitious artists at Christ’s Hospital were delighted to hear they have been offered unconditional places at well-known art establishments. Eight Year 13 pupils, Isabelle, Scarlett, Joe, Tatiana, Giovanna, India, James and Sol, chose to further their creative education by applying to - and being offered unconditional places on Art Foundation courses at - renowned establishments, including Central St Martin’s, The Prince’s Drawing School, Camberwell School of Art, Kingston University, Ravensbourne and Exeter College. Of these, two students - Joe and Sol - also successfully applied for degree courses at The Slade, University College London and Kingston University for Fine Art and Film Making respectively. to keep yourself and others safe, in and around the water, is important wherever you are. Whether you’re close to home enjoying a scenic spot you know well, or off on holiday to swim in the sun, make sure you read available warning signs and take sensible precautions to keep yourself and your family safe.” Swimming in appropriate locations is still a great way to keep fit and enjoy the summer weather, following these top tips will help to keep swimmers safe: Look out for lifeguards – only swim in lifeguarded locations. Remember it’s probably colder than it looks – cold water can affect your ability to swim and selfrescue. Stay close to the shore – always swim parallel to the shore so that you’re never too far away from it. Be mindful of currents – if you get caught by a current swim with it and call for help. Don’t go alone – others can help if you get into trouble. Water and alcohol don’t mix – don’t go swimming if you’ve been

On June 16, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service released a video (which can be viewed on YouTube), to mark the start of Drowning Prevention Week, reminding everyone of good water safety practices. Water safety is important all year round, but becomes especially pertinent through the summer months when it turns more tempting to go for a swim and the weather allows for days out close to the water. Water safety at home, such as emptying paddling pools once used and ensuring fences seal off pools or ponds in the garden, is vital. But it is often poor water safety practices, when out enjoying the countryside, that pose the most risk. WSFRS’s new safety film offers guidance and advice on enjoying the many scenic locations across our county safely. Marvin Smith, Station Commander and WSFRS Water Safety Lead, commented: “We’re very lucky in West Sussex to have many beautiful waterways and beaches to enjoy, but ensuring you know how

Art Workshop at Christ’s Hospital Swan Walk’s 2017 Donation Station tops £15,000! for Primary School Pupils inspirational. They showed the children how drawings of creatures have been interpreted over time, which helped to stretch their creative thinking. The children then spent the day designing, making and painting their masks, with lunch and afternoon tea in-between. The resources in the art department were incredible. The children used materials they don’t normally have the opportunity to experiment with,
On 13 June, Christ’s Hospital hosted an art workshop for primary school children. The young artists were tasked with creating their own version of a Pokémon mask. They were taught by the School’s three artists-in-residence, Rosanna Catterall, Amelia Phillips and Kit Mead, who came up with the workshop’s theme following a successful project with Christ’s Hospital juniors last summer, in response to the ‘Pokémon Go’ craze. The workshop journey began with a talk on the history of art and how it has evolved over the centuries. The children also looked at artists, including Hi-
eronymus Bosch, whose work is known for its fantastic imagery, Max Ernst, painter and sculptor, and Charles Avery, best known for ‘The Islanders’ project. The children then designed the masks, cut them out of cardboard and painted them. Kit Mead and Rosanna Catterall said: “We were impressed by the children’s creativity and enthusiasm. Overall it was a really fun day.” Four of the children, who took part in the workshop, were from The Oaks Primary School, Crawley. Mrs Helen Gavin, Teaching Assistant at the School, said: “The art teachers were second to none, very supportive and highly

808 bags of good quality clothes, homewares, books, DVD’s and CD’s were donated, by Swan Walk Shopping Centre customers, during the 2017 Cancer Research UK Donation Station, which was held in the centre from 1 to 21 May. The value of these donations to Cancer Research UK is an amazing £15,200. Customers were invited to collect a bag from the centre, fill it at home and return it when they were next shopping in the town, and the response was fantastic. “The Donation Station continues to be an important part of our community engagement activities as well as being the ultimate way to
recycle.” said Gill Buchanan, Swan Walk Centre Manager, “This year’s result is another great success and, over the years, we have now raised well in excess of £150,000 for Cancer Research UK, through the sale of all our customers’ donations in the Horsham Cancer Research stores. “Once again, I cannot thank our customers enough as, without their loyal support over the years, none of this would have been possible. I am also, as ever, very grateful to the East Street Cancer Research UK team, who do all the hard work setting up the event, collecting the bags from us and all the sorting.“

We hope to return to Christ’s Hospital for another workshop in the future.” The art workshop was part of Christ’s Hospital’s series of workshops organised for primary school children. Horsham Promises to bloom again this summer Horsham in Bloom’s Summer Competition Season is here and we’re inviting all you keen, local gardeners to get involved! Whether you’re just doing your bit to keep Horsham looking beautiful for the wider community, or you’ve a grand front garden and impressive hanging baskets; a small plot with some handsome gnomes; allotment, or no garden at all, we’ve got a competition category for you. The big news this summer is we’ve introduced a new award; Growing Without Gardens is designed to recognise anyone who enjoys growing without the use of a conventional garden space. Entries must demonstrate imaginative use of limited conditions to produce a horticultural display, whether it’s in containers, baskets, wall space or balconies. Prizes for the lucky winners are Gold £75, Silver £50 and Bronze £25. With this new category in mind we decided to incorporate our Hanging Baskets and Containers Award into Front Gardens, so if you’ve got a front garden with or without hanging baskets, which you think has the Wow! Factor then we’re looking for you. The prizes in this category are worth Gold £150, Silver £100, Bronze £50. As well as that all-important Wow! Factor, Judges will be look-
ing for a good balance of planting, evidence of planning and maintenance and the absence of pests and diseases. Entries must be visible from the road or public access route and entrants do not need to be home for their space to be judged. Next up, it’s The Best Public House Competition. Last year’s winner, The Black Jug, created impressive year round, eyecatching displays and produced alternating summer and winter baskets - who’s up to the challenge? Prizes are worth £150 for Gold, £100 Silver and £50
Bronze. Our Community Services Competition is open to volunteer groups who maintain, what might otherwise be, neglected public spaces. They litter pick, keep rivers running
and ponds clear, and help to create spaces which, as well as being lovely spots for people to visit, are also invaluable environments for wildlife. At the other end of the scale, are people who create displays for sheltered housing schemes that even The
Chelsea Flower Show would be proud of. Prizes of Gold £100, Silver £75, Bronze £50 are awarded to the winners.
Last year’s Best Kept Allotment Award received so many fabulous entries, it took nearly three days to judge them all. If you’ve got beautiful brassicas, cracking courgettes, or a collection of flowers, herbs or vegetables you think will knock our socks off, we want you to enter this competition and have the chance to win prizes worth £100 for Gold, £50 for Silver and £25 for Bronze. Want to know what to do next? Fill in the form on this page and return it to: Horsham in Bloom Competitions, Parks & Countryside, Horsham District Council, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, RH12 1RL. Alternatively, email hibsecretary@gmail.com, requesting the relevant form for you. The closing date for all categories is Friday 30 June. Judging will take place mid-July. Summer competitions season would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, who we sincerely thank. *Prizes will be given in the form of garden centre vouchers only. **Entrants having won Gold in any category three years in a row, will not be considered.

Best friends launch new detective business worthy of examination
A former police inspector and a primary school teacher from Horsham have joined forces to launch a new business, The Detective Project Mid Downs, offering children and adults the opportunity to try their hand at crime scene investigations, through a range of exciting and fun detectivethemed events. Best friends, Cath Reed and Mary Wood, met fourteen years ago when their children were in nursery school. Now, the pair are employing their policing and teaching skills to deliver detective parties, school and educational workshops and corporate team-building days, across an area stretching from Reigate to Burgess Hill and Dorking to Haywards Heath. Their new roles see Mary sharing her expertise of scene of crime analysis and Cath using her teaching skills, to encourage participants to don their SOCO suits and join in hands-on challenges, involving skeletons, finger-printing kits, crime scene materials and story boards, in the science-based events. All of the activities are based on real investigation techniques, demonstrating how crime is investigated in the 21st century, using cutting-edge forensic science

theory and practice. Cath, who has always lived in Horsham, has taught in primary schools in Crawley, Horsham and East Grinstead for 27 years, whilst raising her daughter, now 19 and son, now 17. Mary joined the Metropolitan Police Service in 1981 and worked as a police constable and community officer, before being made a Sergeant in 1996 and an Inspector in 2004. Her career has included working on murder and other serious crime teams, earning her 2 medals and five commendations. It was whilst pregnant and working in police training that Mary discovered a love of imparting knowledge and making learning interesting. Mary said: “I’m delighted with our new business, especially as I didn’t think for a minute that my extensive knowledge of murder and death was a transferable skill! It’s a dream come true to work alongside my best friend - years of doing everything together means we naturally know which of us is best at something and when to let the other one do it! “I’ve always been fascinated by what happened, how and why. I think there is something in all of us that wants to be a detective, to solve the crime and right the
wrongs.” she continued, “That’s the gift The Detective Project brings to children and adults - the opportunity to solve a mystery using exciting real-life techniques. “Our skills and experience complement each other perfectly.” explained Cath, “Mary is a natural leader, loves talking and brings detecting skills to the business, whilst I specialise in teaching and presenting to children and organising and running engaging activities. “I see the Detective Project as a unique opportunity to use my teaching skills in a new way and love the hands-on practical activities and problem-solving that’s involved. “Having managed many children’s parties - from princess to pirate - in my time, I am finding crime and detection the most exciting theme of them all. I only wish this had been an option when I had my own children!” Mid Downs is the latest franchised operation of The Detective Project, which was launched in 2010 by Jenny Williams, a former career detective with the Metropolitan and Avon and Somerset police forces. Jenny combined her experience and knowledge of scenes of crime methodology with her experience as a Mum to launch the event business, which now has five operations across the UK and has won several prestigious business awards. Jenny is thrilled to have Cath and Mary on Board: “The Detective Project couldn’t be better suited to their passions, experience and skills. The team’s enthusiasm, for engaging children and adults alike, is infectious and I think the Mid Downs is set for some memorable events!” To contact or find out more about The Detective Project Mid Downs, please call: 01403 610016, email: middowns@thedetectiveproject.co.uk or visit: www. thedetectiveproject.co.uk

The world premiere performance will be recorded by the BBC for broadcast on Radio 3.

Top high street agents ‘significantly outperform online rivals’
Top high street estate agents achieve far greater results for their customers than online-only rivals, new research has found. A study by the HomeOwners’ Alliance reveals the best 1,000 high street agents successfully sell
82.42 per cent of the properties they list compared with just 51.98 per cent of those marketed by online firms. In addition, a high street agent needs an average of only 21 days to sell a property, while an
online company takes 43. A highperforming estate agent typically achieved 100.35 per cent of the asking price, while somebody selling with an online-only company will have to settle for 95.85 per cent. Kevin Shaw, national sales director at property specialist Leaders, says: “These figures show the importance of not only choosing the best estate agent to sell your home, but also the benefits of picking a traditional agent over a newer online provider. “The best high street agents achieve an extra 4.5 per cent of the asking price when agreeing a sale, which can be worth tens of thousands of pounds to sellers, far outweighing the slightly greater fee attached to using a traditional firm. “Most sellers need to ask themselves whether they can afford to overlook a quality estate agent who will get the best possible price for their home. It’s
also worth remembering that if a high street agent does not sell a property they do not usually command a fee, whereas the majority of online agents require upfront fees that are paid regardless of any success.” The results also show a difference in the results achieved by the top 1,000 high street agents and lower-ranked companies, underlining the importance of choosing the best agents in the industry. Sellers should consider factors such as experience, reputation, local knowledge and a proven track record of success. Kevin adds: “Of course, everybody has different priorities, but to get the best price and achieve the quickest sale a top high street agent will always be the best choice.” For more information on selling a property and how to realise your ambitions in the market contact your local Leaders branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

Horsham boxing club makes history
Horsham boxing club made history this weekend having two boxers box in the Harringey cup. Club captain Simon Bayliss and
Tom Tennant both represented the club in the biggest boxing tournament in Europe. Bayliss fought with much determination against Ricky Pryor
from Jersery liones. It was an all action fight and the rounds were close in what made for a great bout. Bayliss was very unfortunate to come away with a loss. Tom Tennant was up next against the very awkward Aston Ryan from the well known Repton club.It was a cracking bout with Tom sticking to his boxing and landing well when in range. Ryan was quick on his feet when he felt tennants power and walked away with the win. Coach Danny Essex said I’m pleased with each of this lads performances both were boxing in the semi finals with top level boxers. Bayliss as always gave 110% with Pryor admitting after the bout he got hit with a left hook which made him see stars! Simon may have a break now and take his coaching course on his well deserved break. He went on to say Tom Tennant after two years out on his third bout back showed massive improvement. He stuck to his boxing rather then brawling and looked very good doing so, this event has made him even more hungry for the new season and looks forward to boxing in the novice championships later this year.

Pulborough BC’s Winning Streak Continues! Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC After 3 rounds of the Brookes Motors League, Pulborough Bowls Club are again topping the table in Division 1, after winning the league in 2016! Game 4 saw the Crablands team visit Pulborough for a 2pm start. With strong results for both the home triples, skip Paul Day, with lead, Pauline Adsett and Alan Jordan as number 2, stole the show, after winning 12/18 ends and producing an impressive 20/9 scoreline! The full 6 points see Pulborough heading to Storrington on Sunday with confidence high! Just 2 triples made the journey to Ewhurst for the Thurs fixture, but the welcome was worth the trip! A stunning green, impressive facilities and warm/sunny weather added to buoyant atmosphere as the 2 teams went head to head over 18 ends, with a break for tea and home-made cakes at halfway. After a slow start and a disastrous 10th end, Alan Jordan and team managed to pull back a 5 shot deficit, to finish 18/16. Len Adsett, with Pauline Adsett and Mike Richards in support, had a more strait-forward game, leading from the 3rd end to win 20/14 and snatch top rink! The final score was 38/30 to Pulborough.
Sat 17th saw Pulborough head to Tarring for the next round of the West Sussex Bowls League, Div 2. 4 rinks played 21 ends of competitive bowls. Ivan Salmon and team, fought hard to finish with a draw 19/19, Alan Jordan, with Mike Richards, Hugh Hubbard and Malcolm Gray as support, started strongly to build a 13 shot lead, only to have a wobble and allow their opponents to pull back, finishing with a narrow win 23/19! Top rink of the day went to skip, Len Adsett, with Melvin Green as lead, Mick Ayling as number 2 and Steve Meadowcroft as number 3. Strong scoring from the start and winning 16 of the 21 ends created the perfect storm, resulting in a 31/11 scoreline and 7/10 league points for Pulborough in the WSBL! Congratulations go to Melvin Green for making it through to the next round of the County Singles Unbadged, good luck in the next round. Pulborough next play on Sun 18th against Storrington in the BML, Tues away against Grafham, at home to Sutton on Weds from 6pm, away at Maltravers in the WSBL on Fri 23rd from 6pm and away at Stedham on Sat from 2.30pm, spectators always welcome!
Primary Schools Tennis Leagues The final week of the Horsham Primary Schools Tennis Leagues finished on Friday with individual tournaments week and there was plenty of great play to celebrate finally getting on the newly re-furbished Horsham Park tennis courts. Southwater Junior Academy had certain key players away on an activities week but after sealing both age group team competitions two weeks ago they still managed to come, see and conquer in two of the three events on offer, although Josh Stephens from Kingslea did manage to punctuate their dominance with success in the third of them. The Years 3 and 4 competition was contested by 14 players. Matches in the first round were all fairly conclusive but things tightened up in the second, Connor Swain beating Kingslea schoolmate Isaac Jacques 20-18 and Southwater’s Rhys Thomnas squeezing past Kingslea’s Elysia 14-12. Dan Peskett (Southwater) reversed Connor Swain’s tightrope walking fortunes by pushing him off 21-18 at semi-final stage whilst Callum Power won the all Southwater battle in the other semi by an even slender margin 14-13. There was no let up in the excitement in the final as Webb beat Peskett 19-18 to win the title, whilst Connor Swain kept the Kingslea flag flying by taking third spot with a good performance against Tydd. The Years 5 and 6 age cat-
egory was split into separate A and B events due to the higher number of players involved. Holbrook School’s trio in the A event all performed strongly to get to the semi-final stage before Morgan Harvey bowed out to favourite Zack Bull from Southwater 14-5 and Joe Carter was able to hold off the tough challenge of schoolmate Ranjuo |Tomblin 9-7. The Bull-Carter final did not disappoint as some excellent rallies ensured. However Bull’s power and experience saw him through against the venemously loaded forehand topspins of Carter. Tomblin prevailed against Harvey to come out on toip of the third place play-off whilst Jayan Miah headed up the enthusiastic Kingslea posse coming in fifth. Kingslea was the dominant force in the B event with Southwater having to be content with the lower placings for achange. Jamie Standish and Dan Baldock both did well by winning through some close encounters. Josh Stephens had to be wedged into the format after the organiser unintentionally omitted to include his name in the first round. However once he did finally join the fray there was no stopping him and by the end he’d more than justified having a crack at Baldock, the winner of the event by conventional means. He won this one 9-5 so was declared the winner of the competition.

Munday’s eight rows Bexhill out Michael Munday
Saturday June 17 - Sussex Premier League Bexhill 155 all out (40 overs) Horsham 156-8 (45.3 overs) Horsham won by 2 wickets – Horsham 30 points – Bexhill 8 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham were missing several senior players, but came away from Bexhill’s Polegrove ground with a gritty win, cementing their fourth in the table spot.
Captain Michael Thornely saying: “Bexhill won the toss and elected to bat, so we did well to bowl them out for 155, especially as the outfield was so quick – thanks to a brilliant eight wicket spell from Michael Munday. His cluster of early wickets really put them under pressure. It was closer than necessary but second XI skipper Paul Williams (31) and John Aston put on a crucial partnership, digging us out of trouble from 119-7. I’m not a great watcher, so it was a bit
nerve-wracking!.” At 90-1 Bexhill were cruising with few cares, but, when Munday dismissed the two well-set batsmen, four wickets went down for 14 runs. A partial recovery was staged but there was no real answer to Munday’s wiles as he snaffled all but one of the last 9 wickets, finishing with 8-38 from 15 tormenting overs, in his best Premier League return. In reply Horsham, too, had few initial concerns, and at 89-2 appeared to have victory well within their sights, until, Thornely’s departure for 52 precipitated a slide only arrested by Williams and Aston. Master spinner Munday told the District Post: “The pitch was dry with some grass left on and there was spin and bounce for both sides – their spinners bowled well on it and on another day Nick Oxley might have got three or four wickets for us. Craig (Gallagher) held three different catches in the slips off me and it was good to enjoy a longer bowl after the restrictions in the 50 over league matches. Initially we were aiming to keep Bexhill down to around 200, and so it was unexpected when they got less than that after such a good start. Collapses have cost us a couple of games so it was a bit of a relief to get over the line!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham return home to take on muchfancied leaders East Grinstead, Thornely telling us: “They’re a good young side so I’m surprised they haven’t won the league in the last few years, but we should be back to full strength, we’re unbeaten at home and we turned over second placed Cuckfield, so we’ll be giving it our best shot!”
Slinfold Lady Captain’s Day
Golf Despite the blustery conditions, 38 ladies turned out for the Slinfold Lady Captain’s Day. The theme for the day was Wimbledon with colours of green, purple and white very much in evidence. Even if the golf wasn’t quite up to scratch there was an opportunity to be

rewarded for hat decorating skills, with a number of ladies demonstrating considerable talent. Lady Captain, Sue Scaife commented: “It was quite a big day for me and lovely to see everyone enter into the spirit of the occasion. Conditions out on the course were tough and I was pleased to see such a good turn
out. “As always I was keen to promote my chosen charity for the year, Crawley-based The Easter Team. To date we have raised £600, but with another six months to go I am sure we will be able to boost that amount. The charity offers shelter, hot meals, showers and much more to the homeless and those in hardship in the area and I am pleased that we are able to help”. The day was rounded off with a carvery lunch followed by strawberries and cream, in keeping with the theme of the day, and the presentation of prizes by Lady Captain, Sue Scaife. In first place was Irene Arch, followed by the Lady Captain herself in second. Evelyn Rock came in third, with Jan Northcott in fourth and Heather Culshaw in fifth. Nearest the Pin prizes went to Sylvia Darnell and Mavis Lane for the 2nd and 16th holes respectively.
Ruthless Roffey hammer hapless Hastings
Rohit Jagota Saturday June 17 - Sussex Premier League Hastings & St Leonards Priory 100 All Out (43.5 overs) Roffey 103-0 (18.3 overs) Roffey won by 10 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Hastings none Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In a word association game “Hastings” would elicit “battle”, but this was barely a game, never a match and certainly not a battle for Roffey. Last season Roffey beat Hastings three times – a tight home league game followed by a thrashing at Horntye Park, interspersed with elimination from the Sussex Cup. Yet, at the end of this May Hastings beat current runners up Cuckfield – who now shade Roffey by one point - but either side of that they have been bowled out cheaply three times out of their other five matches – they could only muster 62 against East Grinstead, 87 against Horsham and 127 versus Middleton.
And, after unaccustomed defeat the previous week Roffey held a council of war and came out determined to get back on the winning trail. Hastings won the toss at Roffey and in a triumph of hope over experience elected to bat first, promptly losing two wickets. To post anything like a challenging score, Hastings needed to occupy the crease but wickets kept tumbling as Roffey turned the screw. Going along at little more than two an over the urgent need for runs forced Hastings to play some expansive shots, hastening their downfall, Roffey pouching every chance offered. Only four batsmen reached double figures, the highest wicket stand producing just18 runs, George Fleming taking 4-32. Rohit Jagota and Leigh Harrison each took two wickets and Luke Barnard and Ben Manenti one apiece. Roffey won shortly after 4pm, without losing a wicket, Jagota’s 58 including 13 fours, Theo Rivers finishing on 29. Man of the Match Jagota told us: “A par score was 250 or 270, so they had nothing too defend”, George Fleming adding: “We did what we do – tight discipline and strict control in the field, creating pressure!” Hastings have some useful players but are clearly low in confidence at the moment. This weekend is a big one for Roffey – on Saturday they travel to Middleton in the league - restored to the Premiership this season, Middleton have flirted with the top of the table and, last year, knocked Roffey out of the Sussex Cup in the Semi Final. Then, on Sunday, Roffey host league leaders East Grinstead – against whom they have suffered setbacks in recent seasons - in the Regional Final of the National Knock Out Cup.
Barns Green six-a-side tournament a great success Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Anyone who has witnessed the annual half marathon at Barns Green will know that the whole village really supports its community events, so it was no surprise to see a big turn out at the six-a-side cricket day. Club Captain Chris Bailey told the District Post: “We’ve organised the tournament to bring players in the club closer and to have a bit of fun. All six teams wear coloured IPL kit, and we use a white ball, have coloured stumps and walkout music, too. This is the second time we have run it, but the plan is for it to be an annual event.” The six teams – with names such as Blacktower Thunder Catchers and DA Clark Daredevils included a mix of players from the club’s three league teams with colts playing alongside adults, ages ranging from single figures to over 60. The day started early with an auction determining the composition of each team, the non-playing “owners” sponsored the day and
used a nominal budget to bid for players, modestly - and not so modestly - described in the programme, the skill being to retain enough money to build a strong team! Players chose their own walk on music, from I’ve got the Power to Don’t Stop me Now, Big for your Boots and My Way, which, together with bursts heralding boundaries and wickets provided a rousing background. The first round of matches got under way at 10.15 before a buffet lunch during the Mascots game, enjoyed by James Dye, who said: “I’m in Barns Green’s Under 10s – I prefer to bat and its great fun today!” After tea the finals round was followed by the presentation ceremony at 19.30, the long day being organised by a substantial team of volunteers. Matt Barrett, Barns Green President was the busy announcer, taking time out to tell us: “This is a great village, everyone gets behind the sport and all the players are locals.” Matt’s brothers were nearby and grandfather Jack Dendy helped lay the square when the club moved to its present, third, home in 1947.
