Thousands gather at Horsham’s Big Gig The crowds swarmed into the grounds of Horsham Sports Club last Saturday afternoon for a fantastic day celebrating live music at The Big Gig ‘17 music festival. Over 2,400 music fans of all ages gathered together with family and friends and the atmosphere was electric. Horsham was ready to party and did us proud with such a happy community spirit and enthusiasm. Spoilt for choice with the array of talented musicians and bands, there was something to suit all tastes. Local lads JOE90 kicked off the line up with a flawless set of Brit-pop and rock classics followed by the renowned ‘No Jacket Required’ Phil Collins tribute band, who got everyone up on the dance floor with classics such as ‘Easy Lover’ and ‘Two Hearts’. Things started hotting up when the Take That Experience whipped Horsham into a frenzy with hands in the air, sing-along classics and energetic dance routines. Locally famous favourites The Blunter Brothers, a sensational eleven piece funk, soul and motown band with a six strong brass section, delivered a seamless set including Stevie Wonder classics, James Brown and a crowd jumping Bruno Mars medley. The night rose to a lively crescendo with the arrival of headliners Swede Dreamz, the amazingly accurate ABBA

Glitter and sparkle filled the afternoon with fabulously festive face painting from Beauty and the Rest. Deliciously tempting street food ran all day and into the night supplied by some of Horsham market favourites, Ginger Rookes, Steak Expectations, and the gorgeous Khao with her delicious Thai creations, plus many more. Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC) is delighted to announce that registration to the Arundel to Brighton (A2B) walk is now officially open, and is calling for people to get involved. The Charity aims to raise £30,000 from the event, which is now in its fifth year, in order to launch a new Outreach Service to provide support to those families who are unable to attend sessions or need extra help at home. This service will include home visits as well as leveraging digital audio visual technology to allow families to participate virtually in sessions and benefit from online video tutorials. This will also enable the Charity’s staff to go in to its children’s next schools to meet with teachers and to support their transition as well as helping their new teachers to understand how they might be able to better support children. The fundraising walk begins at 7.30am on Saturday 16 September at Arundel Castle and follows the South Downs to Devil’s Dyke, Brighton, over a 35k undulating course of beautiful scenic countryside. The walk brings together people of all abilities and ends with a celebratory meal at the finish line. For those who want to raise money, but participate over a shorter distance, there’s also a 12km route which ends at Ki-
thurst Hill. Pilar Cloud, Executive Manager of DVLCC, said: “This event is very special to us as it brings people together, including some of our families, to enjoy the beautiful South Downs and raise vital money for the Charity. This year also marks our Founder – Dame Vera Lynn’s – 100th birthday. “The work of the Charity has helped more than 500 families with children under five years old who have cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties. The Charity gives these children an amazing start by offering an innovative and essential early intervention service to help the whole family, and if we can raise the target of £30,000 we will be able to bring our services directly into the homes of those who need it.” Registration for the A2B walk costs £36 per adult and £11 per child and all proceeds will go directly to the charity. For teams of three adults there’s a special rate of £100 per team. All walkers are asked to aim to raise a minimum of £100, or £400 collectively as a team of three. For more information on the A2B walk or to register to participate, please visit https://dvlcc.org.uk/events/ a2bwalk-event. Bonding trip to Blackland Farm for Farlington Yr 8s Farlington School’s Year 8 girls enjoyed a three-day bonding trip at Blackland Farm, in East Grinstead, as part of the Key Stage 3 Physical Education curriculum and to develop peer group relationships. The camp is run every year, for the 12 and 13 year-olds, and develops and enhances their team building skills, initiative, independence and self-confidence. The girls have to work outside their usual friendship sets, as they are divided into different groups for outdoor activities, doing chores and sleeping in tents. The outdoor challenges included low ropes, an assault course, tunnels, orienteering, rock climbing, kayaking, abseiling, bungee jumping and crate challenge. These activities were in addition to the worthwhile, and for some, first, experience of camping: having to pitch a tent, cook on an open fire, wash up for themselves and sleep under canvas! “Our favourite activity was abseiling, where we had to walk, or jump, down a wall whilst wearing a harness
(fortunately)! Those of us who were too scared to abseil were soon motivated to do it by a little singsong (to the theme tune of SpongeBob) and we all managed to jump our way down independently,” said Hannah C, Year 8, “We also enjoyed tunnelling, memorising our way to each different numbered exit, even though it smelt like a cow was living in there, permanently, and it felt like we were crawling through the Thames at some points. Most of us got out with only wet arms; however, some of us got out with t-shirts that had turned from white to brown and had mud in their hair, but that didn’t ruin our fun!” The teachers were ably assisted by Sixth Formers in the process of doing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, who were excellent and gained great leadership experience. Sara Whittaker, Farlington’s Director of PE and Games, who organised and led the trip said: “This trip is an invaluable experience before the girls enter Year 9: it builds relationships and co-operation across the year group”

Collyer’s and business experts up for the challenge! Can Horsham District help make this
“challenge team” (left to right): Smita Warren (RSA), Neil Bennett (John Lewis), Dominic Wakefield (Wakefileds), Steve Summers (Outreach International); Ann Donoghue (Collyer’s Governor and Senior International HR Professional); Steve Spurling (HSBC), Jenni Dance (South Lodge, an Executive Hotel), Mark Goodson (Accenture) and Kim Sim (Assurity Consulting). Collyer’s have been meeting with industry experts to plan the Challenge of Management 2017. The popular and successful event forms part of the Ofsted outstanding college’s much admired progression work and gives students a taste of the real world of business management. The event, which will take place at the stunning South Lodge Hotel on 10 July, will enable teams of ten students, each led by a top representative from the business community, to compete throughout the day in a number of business games and team building exercises. Collyer’s Senior Tutor, Ian McAlister, said: “Big thanks to
Lucy Hargreaves for her sterling work organising and chairing the session. Planning for this popular day is complex and the success of the experience for the students rests on the forward thinking, and expertise, of our advisers and the progression team here at Collyer’s. The meeting, held in the stunning surroundings of the world renowned South Lodge Hotel, was a resounding success, allowing us to discuss new and improved tasks.” Collyer’s Employability Coordinator, Lucy Hargreaves, explained: “An incredible amount of work goes into planning the Challenge of Management, but it will all be worth it on the big day!
We are grateful to all the business advisors who will lead the teams and took part in today’s planning session at South Lodge.” Business representatives supporting the event include: Smita Warren (RSA), Neil Bennett (John Lewis), Dominic Wakefield (Wakefield’s), Steve Summers (Outreach International); Ann Donoghue (Collyer’s Governor and Senior International HR Professional); Steve Spurling (HSBC), Jenni Dance (South Lodge, an Executive Hotel), Mark Goodson (Accenture) Kim Sim and Ian Robinson (Assurity Consulting); Sarah Ediss and Jack Fosberry (Kreston Reeves) and Nicola Thurston (Talenterprize). Ian McAlister added: “The Challenge event has been so successful over the years, that many of its elements are being used by local businesses as examples of team and assessment centre tasks. As we approach the day, the excitement mounts at college with the event now fully booked – the Challenge of Management 2017 is certainly the summer’s hot ticket!” Collyer’s Vice Principal Steve Martell said: “The event has certainly moved with the times over the years and we are very proud of its continued success. At the end of the day, what could be better? A chance to shine, prove yourself, network with talented regional business leaders and enjoy a free lunch at one of the top 5 star hotels in the country!”
the biggest ever Big Knit for Age UK? Horsham District has been knitting up a storm for the past few months and thanks to knitters’ incredible handiwork Age UK is just a few stitches away from hitting their tremendous two million target for this year’s Big Knit. Age UK and innocent are urging people to click their needles one last time and get their creations handed into the local Age UK by 31 July. The miniature hats will then make their way to stores across the country and be paired with innocent smoothie bottles, which will go on sale in October and carry a 25p donation towards Age UK’s vital work to help support older people across the country. Sonia Mangan, Chief Executive Officer of Age UK Horsham District, said: “We’re overwhelmed with how much support this year’s Big Knit has received – the hats are getting more and more impressive and they are coming in thick and fast, which is great. “We need to hit our huge two million hat target though, so we’re asking all those out there, who want to help make a difference to the lives of older people in the Horsham District, to pick up your needles for one final knit. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a dab hand and can knock a miniature hat up in ten minutes or whether you’ve never knitted a row in your life, we want everybody to get behind the Big Knit and help us smash this incredible target. Come on Horsham District we’re counting on you!”
Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every seven minutes because of the cold. Every hat donated to Age UK Horsham District will help keep older people warm and well, by funding local services, such as their Information and Advice service, which can help with income maximisation. Extra income could mean that local older people do not have to choose between eating well or popping the heating on to keep warm this winter. Sim Viney, innocent drinks, said: “We have had such great support for the Big Knit over the years. We are positive knitters across the country will take the challenge to make this year’s event the biggest ever. Even if you’ve never knitted a stich, creating a little hat is a great way to start and won’t take long. We’re massively grateful to everyone who joins in and helps make this year’s campaign a huge success.” For more information on the Big Knit, contact Age UK Horsham District on: 01403 260560 or log onto: www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org. uk Please send completed hats to: Age UK Horsham District at Lavinia House, Dukes Square, Horsham, RH12 1GZ. Local MP supports ‘Great Get Together’ Horsham care home has fun in
On Sunday 18 June, local MP Jeremy Quin joined members and guests for service and lunch at Horsham’s Unitarian Church to support the national ‘Great Get
Together’ programme. With events at over 110,000 religious and secular locations throughout the UK the ‘Great Get Together’ programme aimed to
remember and to celebrate the principles of tolerance, compassion and inclusiveness embraced and promoted by Jo Cox, the MP for Batley and Spen who was murdered for her ideals on 16 June 2015 by Nazi sympathiser Thomas Mair. Under the slogan “We have more in common than that which divides us” the day of remembrance and celebration was promoted by the Jo Cox Foundation, established with the support of Jo’s husband, Brendan Cox, to advance the causes and values she had espoused and to highlight the issues she cared about so deeply – from the plight of innocent civilians in Syria to the despair caused by loneliness and social isolation in the UK. the sun for Care Home Open Day
A care home in Horsham welcomed the local community for a fun-filled afternoon of entertainment to celebrate Care Home Open Day. Skylark House on St Marks Lane was one of thousands of care homes across the UK to take part in the annual initiative aimed at challenging perceptions of care homes, connecting residents with people in their community, and developing relationships across the generations. The team at Skylark House had organised a special garden party to celebrate the open day. Guests were able to enjoy the summer weather in the home’s garden and enjoyed delicious refreshments and a cream tea prepared by the home’s chefs. Throughout the afternoon there was live entertainment from local guitarist, Tommy Parsons. Visitors also had the chance to make some new furry and reptilian friends with a special visit from the animals at Wild Science.
Devendra Lallchand, home manager at Skylark House, said: “We were delighted to welcome so many members of the local community for the home’s very first Care Home Open Day, which is all about connecting people and enriching the lives of residents through lasting relationships. “Both the residents and guests loved the host of entertainment that was on offer throughout the afternoon, and everyone commented how much they enjoyed the celebration. I hope this Community Project gives lots of local people a lot of pleasure to unveil a new defibrillator, which has been placed on site, in a joint venture between the two organisations to service the local community. He explained: “We are thrilled and grateful that the Lions Club have been willing to invest with us in this vital piece of equipment. In the past, tragically, there have been fatalities at this site or close by. By installing this defibrillator, we will be able to ensure the very best health and safety standards possible and it shows clearly that everyone in the local community
is driving this Shipley Community Project together.” A refreshing lunch was served at the launch event and there were beautiful examples of woodwork on display, which have been produced by men attending the workshop sessions. The Shipley Community Project hosted an official launch of the Workshop and unveiled the new community defibrillator on Tuesday 20 June. The grounds of TD Shipley FC were bathed in sunshine, as the regular Petanque and Hills Farm Lane Walking Football teams braved the heat to put on sporting displays, for those who came along to celebrate the event. Philip Gibbs, Chairman of the Shipley Community Project, was delighted with the turnout:
at the heart of our activity here in Shipley, but to remain viable, football clubs need to diversify and reflect the changes in society, especially as many older people are still highly active well into their 70s and even 80s. Therefore, we must endeavour to create a sporting and activity hub for all ages, where everyone is welcome.” Greg Charman, Community Safety and Health and Wellbeing Manager for Horsham District Council, was fittingly presented with a Stanley knife to cut the twine across the Workshop doorway. Horsham District Councillor for Billingshurst and Shipley, Kate Rowbottom, was also in attendance and has been a consistent supporter of the Project. “It’s a privilege to be asked to open the Community workshop,” said Greg at the event, “What has been achieved already is marvellous and it’s clear to see what a team effort it has been.” Greg recalled his early years, when he grew up in the local area, and the site was overgrown with abandoned vehicles occasionally littering the rough ground. He praised the construction of the brand new junior football pitch, built by Hills Farm Lane FC and TD Shipley FC as

Sue Jay, Head of Creative Arts at the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee school in Horsham, was surprised and delighted to be awarded a prestigious Silver Pearson Teaching Award on Friday 16 June. The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, created to recognize the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach. Friday 16 June was “Thank a Teacher Day” and the awards were presented nationwide to coincide with the day.
Sue is one of just 56 winners from schools and colleges across England, Ireland and Wales. All silver award winners are invited to the Pearson Teaching Awards to be held in central London in October. At the awards, Sue will discover if she has also gone on to win one of just 11 Gold Plato Awards, which are considered the UK’s “Oscars for Teachers.” A special assembly was staged as a surprise for Sue, although she admitted: “I did get a little suspicious about what was going on when my husband turned up at school for assembly!”
Sue has been a teacher for 40 years and in her role as Head of Creative Arts at QEII she has taught, and directed, hundreds of young people with severe learning difficulties, leading them to success in national events, such as the Rock Challenge dance competition and the Shakespeare Schools Festival. This has included being invited to perform adaptations of Shakespeare in London, at the Lyric Theatre, and a dance performance at the O2. QEII’s headteacher, Lesley Dyer, said: “Sue is a truly amazing teacher and the impact she has on our students, through her creative arts work, is life changing. I am thrilled that she is a silver award winner and wish her every success in the finals in October.” The assembly was attended by the whole school and also former students of Sue’s, as well as Horsham MP Jonathan Quinn and representatives from West Sussex County Council. Sue was delighted to have received the Teaching Award: “Recognition of my work at QEII means so much, and it was overwhelming on Friday to be supported by so many students, parents and staff, both past and present” Picture: Sue Jay (holding her award) with past and present QEII students

and the Sussex North branch for more than three decades. Michael Ward, RSPCA interim Chief Executive Officer, said: “Julian has worked for us as a case vet on a number of occasions and has treated thousands of animals rescued by the charity, no matter the time of day. “He turns up at any time, day or night, for the RSPCA and often takes in the most poorly victims of cruelty to tend to them personally. “His work for the RSPCA and animal welfare has been, and continues to be, invaluable, outstanding and tireless. His compassion and kindness for the animals he treats is immense and incredible.” Julian has also gone on to adopt animals from some of the RSPCA’s worst cases, including

A vet from Horsham has been presented with an RSPCA Honour for decades of support to the charity. The Arthur Broome Bronze Award went to Julian Peters for his outstanding contribution to animal welfare, his invaluable support to the RSPCA’s inspectors and unwavering dedication to suffering animals 24 hours a day. Mr Peters, who was presented with his award at a ceremony in central London on Saturday (17 June), said: “I’m honoured and humbled by this award and it wouldn’t be possible to do what we do, without the support of the vets and nurses in the practice and the ladies of the local branch.” The vet, who works from the Arthur Lodge surgery in Horsham, has supported RSPCA inspectors
a spaniel who’d been used as a breeding machine in a puppy farm but is now always by his side. And he has also been a committed supporter of the RSPCA’s Sussex North branch - covering Crawley, Haywards Heath and Horsham - by offering one of his surgeries as a private boarding facility for cats. For more than 100 years, the RSPCA Honours have been given to recognise people and organisations who’ve helped in the charity’s goal to end cruelty, protect animals from abuse and further gain knowledge of animal welfare. Tony Pritchard, RSPCA chief inspector standards & policy, added: “Julian has helped me on many occasions, day and night, to alleviate the suffering of animals, including being called out after midnight to a sheep suffering from fly-strike, over an hour from his surgery when he wasn’t even on call. His dedication to animal welfare is second to none and without his help many animals would have continued to suffer unnecessarily, not only in Sussex but all across the South of England.” This year 30 winners, including six RSPCA officers, who have gone the extra mile for animals, were awarded with RSPCA Honours, including: Celebrity chef and campaigner, Jamie Oliver, for work to improve chicken welfare, RSPCA rescue dog Teddy who has been credited with helping his owner come out of a coma, a grieving brother and sister who raised money for the RSPCA and a former firefighter who has pioneered large animal rescue techniques. The RSPCA Honours ceremony was held on Saturday 17 June at The Law Society in London.

CH Pupil Achieves Art History Scholarship Award
Poet and essayist, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who was educated at Christ’s Hospital, would have been proud that a pupil from his school, Beatrice Chantler-Hicks, has been awarded the prestigious Sir Trenchard Cox scholarship 2017 for her art history essay work. Beatrice, 18, was tasked with writing two essays: ‘the first of a building, painting, sculpture or work of decorative art which she
truly enjoys; the second of a building, painting, sculpture or work of decorative art which she loathed’. On winning the award, the judges of Art History Abroad declared that: “Beatrice wrote eloquently and with passion on Marat and the Shard.” Beatrice commented: “I enjoy the painting ‘Death of Marat’ and could write passionately about it. However, my description of the Shard was not so complimentary, because I feel its glass structure lacks respect of its context. I am thrilled to have been awarded the scholarship and it will be a huge privilege to be able to explore Florence, Venice and Rome, to attend seminars at the museums and galleries to further my interest in Renaissance art.” Beatrice found out about the Sir Trenchard Cox scholarship when searching for gap year opportunities. This excellent scholarship opportunity offers the winner an art history course, led by tutors who will bring the art of the Renaissance and the culture of Italy to life. Beatrice hopes to study art history and Italian at Leeds following her gap year.
Christ’s Hospital has a literary heritage it is proud of, with Leigh Hunt, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Charles Lamb, and is proud to keep this alive with a broad spectrum of tuition and mentoring for aspiring writers. Recent examples include a visit to the School by T S Eliot prize-winning poet, Sarah Howe, and two pupils represented Christ’s Hospital at the Charles Lamb celebration luncheon and lecture in London.

Crash survivor from Horsham reunited with life-saving ambulance crews
A Sussex man who suffered lifethreatening injuries and spent six months in hospital after a serious car accident, has been reunited with the ambulance team who helped save his life. Drew Monckton, aged 36, from Horsham, was travelling in his car on the A24 between Horsham and Dorking, when his vehicle left the road, shortly after 6am on 9 September 2016.
Luckily for mechanic and father Drew, a member of SECAmb control room staff, dispatcher Kate Nebbett, spotted his car in trees down an embankment on her way to work. Kate stopped to help, alerted her clinical colleagues and stayed to assist the medical team. Kate’s actions for going above and beyond the call of duty were recognised at the Trust’s annual staff awards earlier this year.
The first clinicians to arrive at the scene were Paramedic, Rebekah Vonk, and Associate Practitioner, Heidi Gaskins, after details had been gathered and support provided by Emergency Medical Advisor Laura Staplehurst. Rebekah and Heidi were backed by paramedics, Julie Marchant and Johnathan Harrold, before air ambulance team, Mike Rose and Mark Salmon, attended the scene by road. The crews worked together to provide emergency care to Drew, before he was taken to St George’s Hospital in London. The prognosis for Drew was uncertain and he was kept in an induced coma for a month. Things weren’t any more certain, when he failed to gain consciousness when attempts were made to wake him from the induced coma. However, over time, and with expert hospital treatment, he made improvements and, following a six-month hospital stay with intense rehab, he was able to return home. Drew, who has had to teach himself to walk again due to a brain injury which affects his short term memory, was full of praise for eve-
ryone who helped him: “I’m just so grateful to everyone for everything they did. You don’t realise, when you’re out and about, quite how much the NHS does. It’s been a real eye opener. I’m really pleased to have been able to meet everyone face-to-face to say thank you.” Drew’s dad, Colin, a retired police officer, who now who works for SECAmb as an equipment officer at Banstead, said: “As a former police officer, I know how nice it is to have people let you know how thankful they are. I wanted to say a massive thank you from all of us. Everyone, from Kate who initially
stopped and helped, to the guys in the control room, from the crews who attended the scene, to all the hospital teams - they all did a brilliant job.” Paramedic, Rebekah Vonk, responded: “On behalf of the whole team, it’s been a real pleasure to meet Drew and Colin. It’s essential in incidents such as this, that everyone works together as a team and that’s exactly what we did. We all wish Drew and his family all the very best for the future and for his continued recovery.”

‘Time flies whether you’re having fun or not - the choice is yours’ Michelle Betts One of my favourite quotes is ‘time flies whether you’re having fun or not - the choice is yours.’ Time seems to pass ever quicker these days but if you live in Horsham you can have fun whilst the time files as there is so much to do! I’m writing this having seen a tank in Horsham Carfax this morning. Not because the town is under seige but because it’s Armed Forces Day. I spotted this event on Facebook and popped
along for a great morning looking at the vehicles and listening to the bands. If you follow the Horsham Time Well Spent page on Facebook you’ll see there is a whole list of events lined up for the remainder of the year. The page gives you full details of what’s on where together with timings and what you can see and do at each event. One which caught my eye was the new ‘Horsham AmeriCARna’ event on 24th September, bringing American cars and bikes, food and drink together with 1950s & 1960s music to town. If that’s a little too far ahead to plan then the Horsham Festival Facebook page has details of their events from 8th July through to 16th July. This festival brings you expression of the arts by local groups through music, drama,
visual arts, digital media and literature. Full details of what’s on where can be found on their page. July is jam packed with things to do as ‘Funday Sunday’ has just popped up in my Facebook feed this replaces the popular Sparks in the Park event. It’s being organised by the Rotary Club of Horsham with the Horsham Festival and has some fantastic local sponsors too. It’s billed as a family day out with the Rotary Charity Market and other activities in the Carfax and more children’s activities, music, theatre and the fun fair in Horsham Park. One not to be missed if you have children! If you have children then I’d recommend joining the Horsham Parents group on Facebook. This is a great community page of over

These are skills that a robot simply can’t much. A marketing manager, a creative director, or a CEO. You’ll be okay – for now. However, for those of you in jobs where the same process is performed over and over again, and requires little mental input; you may want to start looking for a new career in the few years. Loxwood’s Hidden Sculptor! Heather joy
JoyStars
I first met Graeme Lougher whilst he was perfecting the last bits on the new witch’s cauldron at The Loxwood Joust. Graeme is a talented gem with a fun filled creative past and an enthusiastic imagination. He is a sculptor, a prop maker and he also casts with fibreglass and resin materials. He developed his skills in prop and mould making at Shepperton Studios where, he worked on films such as Harry Potter, helping create realistic looking background scenery, before working on some of the many props for Father Ted. It is here, I learn, that he created one of his most unusual props, the bicycle that the prop hamster Reynaldo, rode across Father Ted’s living room floor. Graeme started his business in Esher, before moving to Loxwood in 2007 and launching GrayZ Creations in 2015. He is clearly a gifted and imaginative sculpture. From pictures, his imagination or smaller maquettes, he creates horses, animals, life size figures and iconic characters such as his set of Jack Frost Statues. His favourite to date is a set of life size female figures,
which are cast in iron with an aged ‘rusted’ look. Graeme’s work can be seen both locally and worldwide with his Jack Frost sculptures being permanently on display at Beaulieu and others being located in the United States and Europe. He is proud to say that one of his mermaids was commissioned by Uri Geller to reside by his pond and a current project, a pack of life size wolves, will be located in a private forest in Austria when completed. Graeme also reproduces his client’s sculptures for them in a variety of different metals mixed with resin and fibreglass, which is called cold casting. Going further into his workshop, you find the props! Here you discover the Witches Cauldron and Dragon he created for the Loxwood Joust, along with a variety of other pieces. Graeme regularly supplies props for exhibitions and events and his raven’s heads are proudly adorning the Yeoman Guards Clubhouse at the Tower of London. The most recent addition is a Mediaeval Torture Rack that will take pride of place in the Torture Zone at the Loxwood Joust. When asked about his projects Graeme explained “I get carried away when talking about my work and people think I am either crazy, or weird when I am excited about building skulls or menacing figures etc. However my strangest looks
have got to have been when I say that I’m building a body for the torture rack!” The Rack comes high on his list of unusual props and was a challenge as it encompasses a large range of materials such as metal, fibreglass, wood, rope and several others. However, it is the fact that it has been built to resemble the rack currently in the Tower of London and it that actually works that clearly gives him the most pleasure. But surprisingly, Graeme’s passion is Halloween and his main projects currently in progress are props for Halloween and Santa’s Grotto’s. This I now realise is the reason for a number of skulls, cloaked creepy monks and rusty cages with skeletons scattered around the workroom! Graeme has a small team of creative staff, mostly from the local area, which varies in number depending on the projects. He said “Finding the right creative staff is always a challenge. The team here are all people who want to do something different with their art and creative abilities. I get great satisfaction in helping them to bring out their unknown creative skills and am always interested to hear from people who want to try something different. “ Graeme will be exhibiting his own sculptures at Wisley Gardens
from 19th August - 24th September at their sculpture event and should you wish to get in contact please

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, produced by Evolution Productions, has become Crawley’s Hawth Theatre’s fastest selling pantomime to date. The show has sold over 10,000 tickets and is on track to break all The Hawth’s Box Office records before it opens on 8 December, running until 7 January 2018. Interest in the pantomime is hardly surprising, as it will star one of Britain’s favourite TV personalities, Stephen Mulhern, as Billy. Stephen is no stranger to pantomimes at The Hawth, where he previously appeared as Buttons in Cinderella (2013) and Jangles, the Storyteller, in Sleeping Beauty (2014), when he was famously pranked by Ant and Dec for their Takeaway show. Stephen hosts a string of smash hit television shows, including Catchphrase, Britain’s Got More Talent and Big Star’s Little Star, and can also be heard on Sunday
mornings co-hosting with Emma Willis on Heart Radio. Snow White will also see the welcome return to the Hawth of Michael J Batchelor, who wowed audiences last year as Mrs Smee in Peter Pan and previous to that, as Nurse Nellie in Sleeping Beauty. One of Britain’s premier pantomime dames, Michael is renowned for his wicked sense of humour, slapstick comedy and, not least, his flamboyant costumes - many of which he makes himself. The beautiful and talented Lauren Cocoracchio, who played Sleeping Beauty in 2014, will reunite with Stephen and Michael this year, as The Hawth announces that she is to play the title role of Snow White. Greenway School are local stoolball champions! Friday June 23 - Sussex Premier League Stoolball Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the district’s annual Primary School Stoolball Festival Horsham’s Greenway were crowned champions after winning the exciting final against Meath Green School at Horsham Cricket Club. Ian ford, Horsham District Council’s Sports Development Officer told the District Post: “We teamed up with umpires from lo-
cal stoolball clubs and the newly formed Horsham District Stoolball Association to lay on the event with 10 teams from eight different schools participating, and we were so lucky with the weather! Southwater’s Junior Academy had some excellent ball strikers but suffered at the hands of Horley’s Meath, who participated because they do not have a local tournament in which to play”. In the semis Meath saw off Holbrook A 273-227 and Greenway beat Shelley A by 302-177 with impressive fielding backing up
their dominance with both bat and ball. Greenway amassed 248 in the final amid fears that it might not be sufficient against the qualities of Meath. But, Meath started slowly and needed 44 off the last over – they responded with a brutal 29, but conceded defeat to worthy winners Greenway. Kingslea, Billingshurst, All Saints, Hollbrook B and Shelley B also greatly enjoyed the tournament, Ian Ford summing up with: “Well done to all teachers, players and umpires for contributing to an excellent good-spirited day of stoolball competition.”

Pulborough Steal 4 Points From Storrington in the Brookes Motors League!
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC Pulborough again showed their prowess by winning over Storrington on their home green on Sun 18th June! 2 triples played 18 ends in the Brookes Motors League, with every point being hard-fought. Pulborough managed 1 rink win and the overall points victory 41/27, yielding them a valuable 4 points to keep them top of the table. Top rink for Pulborough went to skip, Ivan Salmon, with Kath Ayling and Steve Meadowcroft in support with a convincing 30/9 scoreline! A friendly away game at Grafham on Tues was a tougher ask for the Pulborough players, with just 1 of the 3 triples winning 15/12, in stark contrast to the 3 rink win for Pulborough on their own green. Skip Alan Jordan, with Jane Gray as lead and Paul Smith as number 2, battled hard for top rink 15/12,
with Grafham definitely holding the home advantage! The final score was a friendly 36/47 to Grafham, after an absence of over a decade from Pulborough’s fixtures. A late booking saw Pulborough host Sutton for a friendly on Weds 21st. Just 2 triples played the full 18 ends in tropical conditions, with the green proving too much of an adjustment for the Sutton players, with a convincing win for Pulborough 44/24. Top rink went jointly to both Pulborough Skips; Malcolm Gray, with Jane Gray and George Lewis 20/10 and Paul Day with Paul Smith and Mick Ralph 24/14. Maltravers in Littlehampton hosted Pulborough BC for the next round of the WSBL on Friday at 6pm. Despite Pulborough’s best attempts to stay in touch, they managed just 2 league points from a possible 10, to add to their tally for the season. Top rink for Pulborough went to Captain, Paul Day, with number 1, Adey Strat-
ton, number 2, Mick Ralph and number 3, Steve Adsett 19/18 - a tight result! Pulborough travelled to Stedham for a friendly on Saturday afternoon in blustery conditions! The green played well, with the home side managing to find their lines a little easier than their visitors, winning on 2 of the 3 rinks and finishing with a friendly result of 38/50 to Stedham. A fantastic spread of food and great conversation made the result insignificant in the scheme of things, afterall, bowls is, above all, a friendly, sociable game with a competitive edge! The week concluded with a local derby against our friends from Pulborough Sports and Social Club. Their side comprised of various levels of experience, from the old-hands to current league players, the combination of which proved too hot to handle for PBC! The scores couldn’t have been closer, with just 1 point in it overall and 2 rink wins from 3 for Pulborough. Top rink went to skip, Steve Meadowcroft, Mike Richards, Martyn Ralph and Jeff Davy 24/19, with the total score as 59/60 to the Sports and Social Club. A friendly afternoon of bowls, followed by a raffle and a game of “roll for the bottle”, which raised a total of £76 for Chestnut Tree House Childrens Hospice, our Captain’s charity for 2017. Pulborough BC host their annual Invitation Ladies Triple event on Tues 27th June from 2pm, followed by an away game against Chichester on Fri 30th, at home to Worthing Pavilion in the WSBL on Sat from 2pm and at home to Southwater on Sunday 2nd July, spectators always welcome.
Recent successes at Cottesmore
Cottesmore’s Division 2 team in the SCLGA Inter Club Competition had a fabulous 6 - 1 win against the Nevill last week, which meant they won their group and now go through to the Quarter Finals on Monday 10th July. Margaret Swatman, Lady Captain 2017, offered her congratulations to their Captain, Viv Lyons, to Christine Knight, who was Captain of the Day on this occasion and to all the ladies who played in the
qualifying matches. Vice-Captain, Margaret Brice, along with Jill Lewis, Pat Johns and Christine Knight put in a great performance to achieve a top ten finish in another county competition, the Kathleen Rider Foursomes last Thursday at Cooden Beach, finishing 8th out of 48 clubs. Getting by far the worst of the draw with the wind increasing through the day, their joint score
of 65 was the best of any club teeing off after 11am and fourth best of the day. The winners were East Sussex National with 70 points and the runners up Crowborough Beacon with 68 and Sedlescombe with 66, all early starters when conditions were calm. Following up the excellent performance in the Kathleen Rider team, Margaret Brice won the Hazel Hooker Trophy with a fantastic 42 points. There was some great scoring all round with Margaret Swatman second on 41 points and Liz Baguley third from Christine Knight on count back, both with 38. Christine’s week was topped with a hole in one on the third when playing socially with Jenny Frei. The first competition this year affected by the weather with everyone needing to come off the course for an hour to allow a short storm to pass through was during the Myra Shipton 4BBB. The 18 hole competition had good scores through the field and was won by Fee Drew and Jan Brice with 43 points, from Margaret Brice and Penny Gaunt with 42 points and Shirley Vance and Linda Adamson in third on 41 points.

Nerve-jangling win moves Roffey up to second Saturday June 24 - Sussex Premier League Middleton 231-9 dec (57.5 overs) Roffey 235-8 (51.5) Roffey won by 2 wickets – Roffey 28 points – Middleton 14 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In 2015 Roffey did the double over Middleton, condemning them to relegation with a home thrashing, despite a cameo from Sussex’s Jofra Archer. But, Middleton bounced back into the Premier League at the first opportunity and are a side to respect, Roffey squeaking home with one ball remaining in last Saturday’s seaside encounter. Put in, Middleton staggered to 38-5, 81-6 and 134-8, but, unaccustomedly, Roffey are sometimes finding it difficult to polish off opponents when they have them on the ropes and Angus Robson – now on Sussex’s books after a successful stint with Leicestershire – went on to a remarkable 150. Robson struck 17 fours and 5 sixes in his 166 ball stay, his last 50 coming in the blink of an eye, allowing Middleton to mount a decent challenge. George Fleming took 3-65 and Rohit Jagota 2-28, Rohit telling the District Post: “There was
a lot of swinging and missing from Robson early on with the ball just going over the stumps, but it was a really good innings.” In pursuit Roffey got to 52-1, then lost a cluster of wickets before recovering to 155-4, including 63 from Jagota. Several batsmen got to double figures, but the only other major contribution came from Usman Khan, with 73 at little more than a run a ball. At 222-8, with Robson’s legbreaks taking 3-26, defeat was a distinct possibility, but George Fleming has pulled the fat out of the fire in similar circumstances and his two fours in the final over saw Roffey home, moving them up to second, just three points behind Cuckfield, Fleming saying: “I was a bit concerned but the 232 target wasn’t a killer at Middleton and we made it – just!” Roffey Coach Simon Fearnley said: “That was a little more difficult than it might have been but it was a good win and with almost half of the matches played we’re in a good place.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Roffey return home to entertain former supremos Preston Nomads, against whom they have a good record – having won the league there in 2014, displacing Nomads who had taken the title six years out of the previous eight.

Horsham hope Chris Nash day inspires Sussex return
Photos by John Lines Wednesday June 21- Chris Nash Testimonial T20 Day at Horsham Match 1 – Chris Nash Invitation XI 142 all out – Sussex 146-2 (13.2 overs) Sussex won by 8 wickets Match 2 – Sussex 187-6 – Chris Nash Invitation XI 165-6 Sussex won by 22 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the hottest day of the year, Horsham Cricket Club’s ground was ringed with contented spectators savouring Sussex’s return to the iconic setting. Two T20 matches celebrated Chris Nash’s testimonial, the popular 34 year old opening bat saying: “I’m extremely proud

and privileged to be able to bring Sussex cricket back to Horsham, showcasing it once again as a first class venue. The Cricket Club was where I spent most of my time – I first joined at the age of 7 and it always feels like I’m at home when I get the chance to play or watch at Cricketfield Road.” Sussex - keen for serious preparation for their forthcoming T20 campaign - brought their full squad, including international players, and Chris invited some of the best local cricketers to take them on, including Horsham’s Mika Ekstrom and Michael Munday. The crowd enjoyed enterprising batting and superbly athletic fielding, Sussex triumphing in both matches either side of the sell out corporate lunch in the
boundary-edge marquee, during which Tanbridge House School practised their cricket skills, while the food and beverage outlets did brisk business, including Horsham Ladies’ tea tent, raising £500 for junior cricket facilities at the club. In the first game Sussex’s Luke Wright bludgeoned an unbeaten 100 from 40 balls with 7 sixes and 8 fours, securing victory despite Harry Finch’s quickfire 58 for the Invitation XI. In the second match Sussex wicketkeeper Ben Brown, coming back from injury, made 72, backed by 42 from Delray Rawlins. The Invitation XI responded positively with fifties from Kirk Edwards and Philip Salt, but was unable to overhaul Sussex. Horsham President Barry Peay said: “It is especially pleasing having Sussex CCC back, renewing the bond between the two clubs. I have known Chris since he was a junior here and I’d like to think that the support the club gave him helped him achieve his aim of being a first class cricketer. However, to reach that goal, ability, dedication and enthusiasm is needed and we have watched “Nashy” strive very hard to become the very good player that he now is. Chris very much deserves all of the accolades he has received and Horsham CC is thoroughly proud to say that he is ‘one of us’”. Horsham Chairman, Richard Marshall told the District Post: “The ground looks great, the pitch played well and we’ve had a good crowd enjoying themselves, so we’ve reminded Sussex what we can do!” While Chris Nash commented: “This has been a dream day for me and my family – thank you so much to Colin Mitcham for organising everything - and to all those at the club who’ve helped him.” Luke Wright summed up with: “Its disappointing that we don’t play here any more. I hope we’ll be back – we always seemed to do well here.” Everyone echoed Luke’s sentiments, many staying on to relax with music from local Tom Bradley, playing on the outfield in front of the pavilion steps.
Roffey suffer cruel National Cup exit Sunday June 26- England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship – Regional Final East Grinstead 196-6 (45 overs) Roffey 196 all out (45 overs) Equal runs scored but East Grinstead won after losing less wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey prefer chasing and inserted East Grinstead, Rohit Jagota taking an early wicket, but at 90-1 with former Sussex batsmen Will Adkin and Fynn Hudson-Prentice going well a substantial score beckoned. Both, though, were dismissed in their fifties, Roffey again showing their ability to claw back opponents, and 115-5 suggested an inadequate target on the high scoring Crawley Road ground. But, while not posting too demanding a total, East Grinstead’s 196-8 proved defendable, but only just, an unbeaten 36 from Lewis Hatchett, including, crucially as it transpired, six off his side’s final ball. Jagota, Leigh Harrison and Luke Barnard each took two wickets and at tea Roffey were reasonably happy. And, at 73-1 their confidence did not seem misplaced. However, East Grinstead’s young team contains more than useful all-rounders, several with county credentials
and when four wickets tumbled for 18 runs, especially including Jagota’s scalp for 57, brows started to furrow. Jibran Khan and Chris Webb got to double figures and Roffey skipper Matt Davies reached 49 before picking out Adkin, the only man on the field tall enough to pull off a spectacular overhead catch. The stage was set for another match winning George Fleming cameo, but the script writers got it wrong this time and it was left to bowlers Harrison and Barnard to get five from the last available over. Run scoring was difficult and although the final ball was hit to the boundary edge it yielded only a two, threes being hard to come by at Roffey, Barnard’s run out leaving the scores level, East Grinstead scrambling home by dint of losing marginally fewer wickets. The two teams were well matched and the post mortem featured several “ifs and buts” – East Grinstead’s death bowling being mentioned. Roffey captain Matt Davies said: “We bowled and fielded well and we should have been able to chase that down, but our batting didn’t quite show up.” This Sunday, eager to add silverware to their league trophies, Roffey meet East Grinstead again (at their Saint Hill ground) in the Quarter Final of the Sussex Cup.

Horsham’s Michaels see off league leaders Saturday June 24 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 172 all out (52.1 overs) - East Grinstead 113 all out (39.4 overs) Horsham won by 59 runs – Horsham 30 points – East Grinstead 5 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Missing key players, both sides were on 92-7, but Horsham recovered better thanks to an outstanding century from Captain Michael Thornely, followed by another bowling masterclass
from Michael Munday, dragging visitors East Grinstead down from top to third, shading Horsham by just two points. Horsham were put in and after a delayed start were soon 16-3 with former Sussex players Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Lewis Hatchett taking wickets. Will Beer (20) and Thornely steadied the ship but after Beer was out wickets fell cheaply - HudsonPrentice finishing with 4-37 and Hatchett 4-49 – until a 63 run stand between Thornely and David Croshaw provided some respectability. East Grinstead let Horsham off the hook, putting
the field back and Thornely outthought them, declining singles and farming the strike over after over. Croshaw’s stay at the crease proved invaluable, he only made five but enabled Thornely to get to an excellent 153 ball hundred, including 10 fours and 3 sixes. Replying, East Grinstead were on 57-2, until the introduction of Michael Munday, bowling in tandem with fellow leg spinner Beer (228) changed the game. By drinks - 24 overs – the visitors had slumped to 74-6 and could muster no real resistance to Munday’s inventive probing. He finished with 6-32, telling the District Post:
“The wicket was hard and dry and our 170 was well below par. Michael Thornely showed all his experience: considering the circumstances his 100 was the best I’ve seen in the league. We’re still unbeaten at home and the win brings us back into contention.” Skipper Thornely said: “I’ve never played an innings like that and although David (Croshaw) didn’t get many he played brilliantly, allowing us to post some sort of challenge and it was a real pleasure to win from there.” Former Sussex bowler Hatchett told us: “On paper we’ve got the best
team in the league but we need to be consistent. There was a bit of spin out there, which suited Horsham’s attack.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit league newcomers Ansty - cut adrift at the bottom of the table 22 points below fellow relegation candidate Bexhill - and looking totally out of place after losing all eight of their games to date. On Sunday, Horsham have a home Sussex Cup T20 Quarter Final, defending their title against Cuckfield - 3.30 start following the 2nd XI game (1.00pm) v Billingshurst
