Leonardslee Gardens reopening after 7 year closure martin read

Reporter

Local garden lovers, and those from much further afield are thrilled to hear that Leonardslee will be reopening. The gardens closed in 2010, much to the disappointment of an estimated 50,000 visitors a year, including many regulars from the district among others arriving in coaches from distant parts. The ten miles of tranquil paths and walks, string of seven man-made lakes (created to provide water for the local iron industry), stunning rock garden, constructed in 1890, and superb displays of rhododendrons, fragrant azaleas, prize-winning camellias and magnolias - the acid soil being ideally suited to the Himalayan species – thriving in the magnificent 240 acre setting. The bluebell woods amid the steep, sheltered valleys on the estate and a wonderful array of trees are equally breathtaking. From the early daffodils, hundreds of varieties of spring flowering shrubs, through to the summer hydrangeas and wild flowers and the dramatic colours of the indigenous and imported trees in autumn, Leonardslee

fully merits its Grade 1 listing on the register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Closure of the gardens followed the purchase by a mystery buyer, but the estate has recently been sold by receivers to Penny Streeter, owner of the nearby 400 acre Mannings Heath Golf Club and its recently launched 38,000 vine winery. The substantial, stunning Benguela Cove residential wine and sporting complex on South Africa’s Western Cape and four restaurants and a hotel are also in her property portfolio. Before the 19th century Lower Beeding was a largely unoccupied and lawless, the forest reputed to be a meeting place for smugglers. But, it became much more respectable when prosperous families moved into the area allured by the pleasant scenery and captivating views of the South Downs. The Beauclerk family built the first house at Leonardslee in 1803, around which time the gardens were thought to have been laid out. Rebuilt on its present site 80 years later, the Grade 2 Italianate house with spectacular interiors came into the ownership of Sir Edward Loder in 1889, when the estate, including Eastlands Farm in Warninglid Lane was, along with South Lodge, a principal employer in the area.

Leonardslee set to re-open Continued from front page. The Loder family retained ownership for over 100 years. Leonardslee’s abundant wildlife, notably deer, wallabies – including albinos – wildfowl and enormous carp is another major draw, as has been the Dolls House Exhibition (valued at £425,000). New owner Penny Streeter was made an OBE “for services to enterprise” in the 2006 New Year honours, not long after the CBI crowned her as Entrepreneur of the Year. A qualified beauty therapist, she is MD of a group supplying medical staff to the NHS. Although she is now one of Britain’s richest women, Ms Streeter – born in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe – left school early, enduring very impoverished times before eventually starting up her highly successful business with her mother. About Leonardslee, Penny Streeter says: “We will restore the gardens to their former glory and create new facilities on site, including tea rooms and dining facilities, as a major local attraction for families, wedding groups and others. It complements our golf and entertainment facilities at Mannings Heath, where we are developing a wine destination, bringing in our wines from South Africa and cultivating a 35-acre vineyard for English sparkling wine.”

Work needs to be done before the iconic Leonardslee is able to reopen but it is hoped that it will not be too long before the very popular gardens are restored to eager enthusiasts’ must visit lists, and will once again provide a valued source of employment at the stunning location. A near neighbour summed up local feeling by telling the District Post: “It was so sad when the gardens closed and I’m delighted that they will be reopening – its such a wonderful place!”

Horsham group invites MP Jeremy Quinn to Speak Up about climate change

Local volunteers for the aid agency CAFOD planted seeds and held a session, where they discussed positive solutions to climate change, as part of a national campaign. On Friday 7 July, parishioners at St John’s Church, Horsham, gathered to plant seeds and begin a discussion about climate change and how they can act. During the day, the group thought about how they could make changes in their everyday lives and signed cards to send to local MP, Jeremy Quinn, asking him to take action on tackling climate change. The local representative for CAFOD in Horsham, Martin Brown, helped to organise the event. He said: “We started with a cup of tea and sharing our thoughts about climate change. We then planted ourselves a seed or two in a pot of the most ethical compost that could be found and took them home. “There were some great conversations held about CAFOD and how we work, and our sensitivity and knowledge of local culture. We also took the chance to take part in CAFOD’s new campaign, Power to Be, and discussed how powerful a little bit

of energy can be in lifting people out of poverty.” This event is part of the Climate Coalition’s Speak Up week of action, which saw thousands of local people meeting their MPs across the country in the week of 1-9 July. CAFOD is part of The Climate Coalition, a collection of over 100 organisations, ranging from the Women’s Institute to Unison, who represent more than 11 million people, across the UK, dedicated to action on climate change and limiting its impact on the world’s poorest communities. The campaigners hope that by lobbying their local government representative, they will make sure the concerns of the world’s poorest people, who are most affected by climate change, are on the MP’s agenda just a few weeks after they have been elected. Martin Brown finished by saying: “Our thanks go to St John’s parish for hosting us and for those that came to raise their voice on behalf of those in poverty.” Find out more about the week of action at: cafod.org.uk/ SpeakUp or weekofaction.org.uk

Horsham Code Club Festival a great success!

On Sunday 9 July, the world saw its first ever CodeClub Festival, in Horsham, aimed at children between the ages of 9 and 11. The event which was part of the 9 day Horsham Festival, saw 48 children from 10 different Code Clubs (from Sevenoaks, Crawley, Horsham, Southwater, Hurstpierpoint and Brighton), 41 volunteers, over 20 games developed by young codeclubbers for the event, 7 Horsham District Councillors, Horsham’s local MP Jeremy Quin, school teachers and heads, organisations, such as The Met Office, Creative Assembly, HackHorsham, Reduced Hackers, Red River, Visit Horsham, Pi-Top, Code Club, Different Cloth descend onto the Capitol Theatre and then Parkside, for a day of Coding, Robotics and the Internet of Things. Proceedings began with an introduction from Gavin Hewins, founder of the Horsham Code Club Festival, followed by short talks designed to inspire the children and parents. Highlights of the talks included Nik Butler (from HackHorsham) on how creativity, art and technology are not mutually exclusive, and how we are seeing an insurgence of makers; Cat Lamin – a well known figure in education and computing science whose simple, but important, message was “Coding is for Everyone”, and it’s “fun”; Richard Lawrence (from the Met Office) who said that looking after the 11th most powerful computer in the world was “the best job in the world”; Emma Smith (from Horsham-based games developer and BAFTA award-winning studio, Creative Assembly) presented figures demonstrating that “UK game sales in 2016 generated more revenue than either film and music”; and Femi – a remarkable 11 year old recipient of the Diana Award, who took time out to attend the festival shortly before flying off to Bangledesh, to help 100 children from low income families learn digital making &

coding. After the talks, a trail of eager code clubbers and parents moved to the Parkside building for the start of some incredible workshops. First up was Cat Lamin from Pi-Top, using Scratch to control Pi-Stops, traffic lights that can be coded. In parallel to this, 4 eager judges played in great detail, every game submitted by the young coders, for the Top Game award. Parents, meanwhile, took the opportunity to grab a coffee, creating quite the queue! Post lunch saw a rotation of groups working with the MET Office on their Weather API and the Raspberry Pi Sense Hat - a device with a display and a bank of sensors, including a temperature sensor that was used to compare the in-room temperature versus the actual temperature from the MET Office; and Femi running a Crumble Robotics workshop, which saw children build their own robot buggies and then racing them. Around the edge of the main room in parallel, children were invited up to several different stands run by the MET Office; ArcGIS (creating story boards on maps), The Turing machine looking at logic, an old MET Office Super Computer, a Raspberry Pi Cluster, and finally, a table run by Gavin Hewins, the always popular Mad Music Machine using Sonic Pi and a bank of Raspberry Pis, where people are encouraged to alter the coded music, using levers and all other manner of contraptions. For every event that HackHorsham works with, a “take away” must be involved, something that will ensure all visitors use their grey matter, to piece together everything they have learnt during the day that can be taken forward after the event. Each group of 4 code clubbers sat at tables named after retro computers (Commodore 64, Apple II..), came up with an idea that would “improve people’s lives”, based

loosely around what they had learnt from the day, and presented it to the other attendees. The ideas and creativity from 9-11 year olds, when given a chance and put in the right situation, never fail to amaze anyone in the STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) world. This event was no exception, with ideas ranging from robots that could automatically water crops, based on weather data, to alarm clocks that would intelligently wake us up, based on data it had received on the forthcoming day ahead. If this was not enough, the final hour saw everyone return to the Capitol Theatre for an awards ceremony. Each participant was given a certificate, kindly provided by Horsham District Council, before awards in 3 categories were announced, gaining their winners 3D trophies, especially printed for the event by local company, The 3D Print Room. Children from different Code Clubs were awarded prizes from Creative Assembly for their game submissions, a wide variety of incredible gameplay and creativity, with one club coming away with Top Game and an incredible main prize of a tour of Creative Assembly’s studios in Horsham, something that will truly encourage and inspire them! The prize for Top Innovation from the MET Office saw a table of 4 winning a Raspberry Pi Sense Hat and trophy for their table’s idea to improve people’s lives. Finally, HackHorsham gave away 3 Quad Copters, to those makers from their Rebel Makers Club, who had gone above and beyond; Flynn (an inspiring 11 year old from Crawley) taking the main trophy for Top Maker. A spokesperson for the event commentd: “What this event has proven, among many others that are now running in Horsham around STEAM, is that there is a thirst amongst people, from as young as primary school children

to the elderly, to come together and design / make stuff using incredible creativity, the same stuff that one day could go on to solve problems in our communities and make a huge impact to the UK Economy. “Those interested in seeing what occurred on the day, should go to https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=cvuyZFkwK_Q - a short film made by Horsham’s RMV Productions, who kindly filmed

with us for the day. A big thank you to local photography company Dennison Studios Photography for their photos throughout the day and Horsham District Council for providing the venues at Parkside and the Capitol Theatre.” For more information on further STEAM events, including the monthly Rebel Makers Club, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/hackhorsham

they might want to use and to think about alternatives to face to face consultations. Extended access does not mean seeing your own GP every time you access one of these appointments, nor does it mean every GP working until 8.00pm / every weekend, or that every surgery will be open during these hours. It is likely that extended access services will be shared across a local area or town, offering a mixture of pre-bookable and same day appointments. The patient and public survey will provide the CCGs – which plan, buy and monitor local NHS

to your home, a consultation with your community pharmacist, a trip to the local Minor Injury Unit or Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre (open 24/7), or even a telephone call to NHS111.” NHS Crawley CCG lead for primary care and local GP, Dr Ketan Kansagra, said: “We are inviting our 5 Communities - across Burgess Hill, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Horsham and the surrounding villages - to review the options for providing extended access to GP Practice services at evenings and on weekends, and to consider what is best for them, as well as the wider community and the NHS as a whole. “Together we can work smarter as we include the voice of patients, their family and the community.” The online survey can be completed via http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/GPExtendedAccessSurvey . The survey, launched 17 July 2017, will run until 15 September 2017. A summary feedback report of all responses will be published on the websites in due course.

With the loxwood Joust only 2 weeks away, here are some facts about their favourite tipple, The Loxwood Joust Mead - The ‘Nectar of the Gods’. Mead is known as a golden liqueur of poets, lovers and kings. It is thought by many to be an elixir of health, fertility and longevity. Created from fermented honey, this smooth and sumptuous wine is one of the oldest known alcoholic beverages, dating back to Persian times. It is swathed in myth and legend and is making a comeback thanks to a surge of interest among trendy youngsters, with consumption up 42% in some countries due to the popular Medieval series ‘Game of Thrones.’ In Mediaeval times mead was part of the marriage ritual and after the wedding the bride and groom were given sufficient mead to last one full moon. They would then consume the sweet wine to promote good luck in their marriage. Mead was also believed to have aphrodisiac and fertility properties and from that ritual came the term “honeymoon.” The Loxwood Joust has its own three distinct meads; Traditional Mead, Tournament Mead and Christmas Mead all of which may be purchased and tippled at the new Mead Shack.

Patient and public views are sought on proposals for access to evening and weekend GP Practice services, shared across a local area. Working in partnership, NHS Crawley CCG and NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG have launched a survey to find out how local people might prefer to access GP Practice services outside of the normal weekday hours of 8.00am to 6.30pm. The survey asks people about how likely they would be to access GP services on weekday evenings, between 6.30 and 8.00pm, and at weekends; the kinds of services

services - with important public and patient feedback on how they would prefer to access appointments on weekday evenings and at weekends. This will allow for planning and commission of services, according to local need, as far as possible. Lead GP for NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, Dr Minesh Patel, said: “The NHS is under pressure like never before and we can all agree that services need to change and adapt in response to increasing demand, and as people’s lifestyles change too. We think extending GP Practice services into the evenings and at weekends, across a local area, will go some way to meeting the needs of our local population. “This is just one example of how we seek to improve access to health and care, given the resources available within our community. But while we want to provide patients with a wide range of appointment times to choose from, we must also ensure that we make the best use of every health pound we spend locally and the reality is that our budgets are limited and we have rising GP and nurse vacancies in our practices”. “We must consider other health and care services where patients can go to get the right care, in the right place at the right time, which isn’t always the GP. This could be an out of hours GP visit

Eco Beasts take over Horsham Park

Eco Beast Sculptures migrated from all over West Sussex, and took over a marquee in Horsham Park at ‘Funday Sunday’, on Sunday 9 July. Children from all over the county have been busy making Eco Beast Sculptures out of waste resources. The best sculptures from schools and children’s uniformed groups were brought to the event to form a stunning public exhibition. Carrie Cort, from Sussex Green Living, an environmental awareness and education initiative, Paul Bellringer, founder of Horsham Festival, and Rachel Carruthers, from the WSCC Waste Prevention Team, developed this exciting new competition. Rachel said: “We have been delighted by the enthusiasm of schools and children to participate in this country-wide upcycling competition. The children have demonstrated, beautifully, the value of what many call rubbish. They have shown that cardboard kitchen rolls, boxes, aluminium cans - in fact, any recyclable or non recyclable material - are valuable

art resources”. The judges had a difficult job choosing winners in four age categories. The final say went to Marji Talbot, founder of Sussex Sculpture Studios, an independent teaching studio in Billingshurst; Brett Mcguin, an Environmental Scientist and the Community Liaison Officer for Biffa West Sussex and Katy Newnham, CEO and Founder of Wastebuster. After considerable debate, the following Eco Beast Sculptures were recognised for their imagination, creativity and choice of materials: Age category under 5 years: 1st place Upper Beeding School Age category 5 – 7 year: 1st Warninglid Primary School; 2nd Trafalgar School; Joint 3rd Upper Beeding School, 1st Midhurst Rainbows and Thakeham First School Age category 8 – 11 years: 1st Georgian Gardens School; 2nd William Penn Primary School; 3rd Birdham Primary School Age category 11 – 14 years: 1st William Penn Primary School; 2nd 4th East Grinstead Guides; 3rd St

Andrew’s C of E High School for Boys The Eco Leader from Upper Beeding Primary School was overjoyed to learn her school had won 1st, 2nd and 3rd in three of the age categories: “We are delighted to have taken part in the Eco Beast Competition. All the children at Upper Beeding Primary got behind the event and produced 22 stunning eco models made out of waste resources. “We had to choose the best three and were over the moon to learn that they had all won awards. The children are so pleased and look forward to entering again next year”. The winning schools will be inspired by an assembly by Nicola Peel, a multi award winning environmentalist and solutionologist who works in the Amazon, followed by a Green Art Workshop delivered by Nicola, Carrie and a team of West Sussex County Council trained Waste Prevention Advisors.

Curtain raised at Collyer’s Art Class Exhibition

“Stunning work” on show at CAPITOL GALLERY An exhibition of work by talented students from Collyer’s Adult Education (The Art Class) has been creating a huge amount of interest across the Horsham district. The theme for 2017 was based around theatre and began with designing props for a college production of ‘Into the Woods’. Collyer’s Tutor, Helen Bolger, said: “A range of exciting pieces were created and influenced by initial skeletal drawings. Exploration continued on this theme throughout the year with collaborative pieces in filmstrips, ceramics, mixed media collages and largescale portraits of film stars.” The Students embraced each new media and continued to improve each year, both in ideas and intuitive use of media. The range of beautiful paintings, collage, ceramics and more were on display until July 2 at The Capitol Gallery in

Horsham. Helen added: “It was a pleasure to teach such a warm, friendly group of students. The work is of stunning quality and the group have proved to be very hard working and talented. All of us at Collyer’s are extremely proud of them.” Work has been exhibited by: Sam Martin, Judith Heywood, Carole Duffy, Eve Richings; Sue Stooks, Nancy Garner, Paul Garner, Jana Bowhill; Alessia Taboga, Lisa Jacques, Fiona Morrison and Faye Lewis. This year, Collyer’s Art Class student, Nancy Garner, has offered all proceeds of her work to go to a “Verity’s Heart Tumour” fundraising campaign - A 2 year old child with a rare cardiac tumour known as a Fibroma. Over 150 people got muddy for Chestnut Tree House

Men and women, aged from 16 to 60, navigated the muddy obstacle course – climbing walls, clambering through tunnels and under nets, swinging on ropes and jumping into muddy bogs – all to raise money for Chestnut Tree House. Participants ranged from individuals and groups of friends, to clubs and corporate teams. Everyone set off at 11am and Steve

now 18 and they’ve supported us absolutely brilliantly through all that time. I’m part of a bootcamp group called The Outdoor Addicts and they’ve got behind me wholeheartedly to support Chestnut Tree House today. We’ve raised over £1,000 already, with more to come, and we’re looking forward to getting really muddy!” Hugh Lowson, CEO of Chestnut Tree House, was at the start line, and spoke about the work the charity does and the importance of events like Operation: MUD to raise both funds and awareness in the local community. Once everyone set off, Hugh – armed with a super-soaker – headed out on the course to cheer people on at various muddy obstacles. Kerry O’Neill, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House, said: “This is the first time we have put on Operation: MUD and we were delighted with the turn out. Over 150 people signed up for the event to raise money for us, and we also got some sign-ups on the day. Sponsorship money is still coming in, but we hope to raise around £20,000, which will cover three

days of all care services provided by Chestnut Tree House. “We would like to thank everyone who took part in our first ever Operation: MUD, as well as the supporters and volunteers who helped out. We are also extremely grateful to our digital and design sponsors, Collider and Ingenious, who really captured the spirit of the event for us. “It was an exciting day, and everyone we spoke to said they enjoyed it. It was obviously a tough and very muddy course, but lots of people have already asked us if we’re running the event again. Watch this space!” Chestnut Tree House provides care and support to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions and their families across East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire. The cost of providing this vital service is over £3.5 million per year, yet the hospice receives less than 7% central government funding so relies heavily on the support of the local community to continue providing vital care to local children and families.

On Sunday 9 July, over 150 people headed just north of the SussexSurrey border to take on a brand new challenge, for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, Operation: MUD. Set on one of the muddiest assault courses in the UK, the 5km route at Henfold Lakes was packed full of challenges, from start to finish, with over 60 man-made and natural obstacles.

O’Rourke was the first to pass the finish line, after just 49 minutes. Steve, a Team Leader at Paxton Access Ltd, signed up for the event to support Chestnut Tree House, which is his company’s Charity of the Year. Theo’s Allstars took on the muddy challenge as a team of 9 in memory of Theo Strudwick. Team member and Theo’s mum, Chantelle Strudwick, said: “We were a bit scared about taking on Operation: MUD, but excited about the challenge! Our little boy was cared for by Chestnut Tree House about three years ago and they did an amazing job, allowing us to be a family and do lots of things together before his time came to an end. We want to support them as they gave us a special time with our little star.” Nicky Torricelli and her team, The Outdoor Addicts, signed up for the event to raise money for the charity, which currently supports her and her family. Speaking just before joining the start line, Nicky Torricelli said: “My daughter has been going to Chestnut Tree House since it opened almost 15 years ago. She’s

Sir Stephen of Loxwood Visits Students

With only a couple of weeks to go until the LOXWOOD JOUST on the 6th, 7th , 13th & 14th August, Mediaeval Knight, Sir Stephen of Loxwood paid a visit to Billingshurst Primary School to collect the pennants they had created for the Field of Flags. The students have created 4 flags of a mediaeval style that are based on heraldry. The flags are made using designs and symbols that reflect the child’s name or environment, school or local area, with several children’s designs being placed on each flag. These

flags will now be hung in the Field of Flags at the entrance to the Loxwood Joust at The Loxwood Meadow for the duration of the festival. Armed with authentic mediaeval weapons, Sir Stephen – Stephen Payne – then demonstrated what it was like to be a Knight and explained some of the gruesome roles that children had on the battlefield. The pupils were enthralled by the demonstrations and display of mediaeval weaponry and were eager to get involved in the session. Learning what war hammers, morning star’s, maces, mercy daggers and

pole axes were used for, along with the benefits, or disadvantages, of each weapon, they saw and really felt what life was like in this brutal age. The children learnt that mediaeval children started training at 7 or 8 years old, and that football had at one point been banned in the middle ages, as it was seen to interfere with archery practice! They also heard that the most dangerous weapon was the bow and arrow and at the Battle of Agincourt, 4.5 million arrows were let loose in 20 minutes, with a good archer being able to release and have in flight up to six arrows at any one time. Stephen Payne, Sir Stephen of Loxwood said ‘What a great group of polite and interested children. It was a delight to do this talk as they were curious, asked some really interesting questions and were very keen to participate and contribute in any way they could.’ The Loxwood Joust is the UK’s premiere mediaeval fun day out, taking place at the enchanted Loxwood Meadow. Step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family! Mrs Doran, representing Key Stage 1, became the Wipeout Champion in the much-anticipated teacher Wipeout Challenge. The school choir and country dancers also performed for visitors in the display ring. The 100ft assault course, Gruffalo bouncy castle and glitter tattoo stall proved to be the most popular attractions on the day. The event also featured many local businesses, from vegetarian food by So India, in Pulborough, to delicious ice-cream from the Fat Cow in Billingshurst High Street. Billingshurst Primary School’s pupils, staff and their families continued their record-breaking fundraising efforts last Saturday, at the annual Summer Fun Day. The grand total from the day smashed the previous year’s record by more than £1,800, raising a remarkable £10,002.33 for the school. Assisted by the summer sunshine and a packed programme of sporting contests, the event drew record crowds and offered more activities than ever before. As the school’s biggest fundraising initiative, the event provides vital funds at a time when school budgets are under pressure. Many family favourites returned for another year, including the Deputy/Head Teacher Bungee Run Challenge, between Miss Nicholls

Andy Murray and Coco’s Hairdressers spent the day braiding hair for hundreds of children. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School commented: “Each year we are overwhelmed by the results of our Summer Fun Day, and thanks to the generosity of our friends and families we’ve set another new high. The day went so well and it was lovely seeing so many children, and adults, having a lot of fun. “The event is organised by an outstanding team of people from the Billingshurst Primary School Community Association, and without their hard work and ingenuity the school would not be able to provide the essential extras that really matter - music lessons, equipment, trips and events for the children to enjoy. Schools are communities first and foremost so I am very privileged to work with such a strong community of people and businesses.”

@Home does it again with another prestigious award

Paul Davies @Home Estate and Letting Agency has won the British Property Awards for Horsham 2017. It’s a prestigious award which is only awarded to estate agents who have demonstrated outstanding customer service and who have been shown to always go that extra mile. The vigorous vetting and judging process for the awards

included mystery shopping and 25 different criteria against which local estate agents were judged. Having won, @Home have now also been shortlisted for a number of national awards. It’s not the first time @Home have been in the spotlight. They’ve already won estate agent of the year 2016 for both Southwater and the RH13 area and Director Paul Davies has himself won Person of the Year in Estate Agency for RH13, awarded by All Agents, the UK’s leading independent estate agent review site. Last year they were also nominated for the Business Matters’ awards for business start-up of the year, innovation and best customer experience. So, what’s their secret? “I suppose my secret is, that right from the start, I wanted @ Home to be a different kind of estate agency. My mission and driving force is to take the pain and stress out of buying or selling a house whilst still getting the best possible deal. That means thinking about things a little differently. We financially vet potential

buyers, we produce fantastic marketing materials, we’re really considerate when it comes to viewings and we are always there, when a client needs us.” Explains Paul Davies, Sales and Marketing Director. “I’ve also made sure that my team feel as passionately about customer service as I do and we do our best to support our local community. I’m thrilled with this award as it shows all our hard work is paying off and customers really do, love what we do” Having launched in 2015, @ Home have produced some impressive results. Over the last year, Rightmove and Zoopla have both announced that @Home had achieved the highest click through rate of all estate agents in the RH12 and RH13 areas and of the properties that @Home have sold, they have achieved over 100% of the advertised sale price. This latest award shows they have no intention of giving up their position as a leading force in estate agency in this area. Absenteeism high in South East workforce Absenteeism costs the UK economy £18 billion per year Women absent for 2.8 million more days than men in past three months Data taken from more than 180,000 employees Employees in the South East accounted for a whopping 590 days of absenteeism per 1,000 employees in the past three months alone. But it’s not all bad news when compared to the rest of the UK; only London has a better absenteeism rate out of all regions. This is just one of the statistics revealed following the launch of a report, the “Absence Management Barometer”, by workplace absence management specialists, FirstCare. The data is gathered from the UK’s first, most complete and accurate source of information drawn up from monitoring more than 13 million days of absence across more than 180,000 employees. It revealed that in March, April and May of this year, 0.59 days were lost per employee (DLPE) in the South East. The North East were the worst offenders with 0.92 DLPE. The North West and then the West Midlands closely followed Wales in second place. London had the lowest rates of absenteeism with almost half the amount of days lost as people in the North East at 0.5 DLPE. The biggest cause for absenteeism in the South East was mental health issues, with 117 days lost per 1,000 days across the region for May alone. The second being musculoskeletal issues. These

two conditions dominate the top two places across the whole of the country. This report follows the launch of the ‘Change at Work’ report in March where it was revealed some £18 billion is lost to the UK economy every year due to absenteeism, and it exposes some very interesting trends. David Hope, CEO for FirstCare, said: “The high rates of absenteeism in the South East will of course be the topic of many conversations and assumptions will be made, but what is crucial to remember is that this is a serious report, updated quarterly and vetted by professionals. “There may be key underlying differences in demographic, climate and industry sector that impacts upon these results. “The data must be used by employers to recognise where improvements can be made and how to effectively manage staff wellbeing, particularly when being introduced back into the workplace, and how pathways for work-life balance can be built as a two-way conversation.” On a wider scale, the report discovered women are more likely to be absent from work than men - with women contributing an additional 2.8 million days of absenteeism than men in the past three months alone. In addition, the man flu myth has been exposed because the time taken off for colds, coughs and flu-like symptoms between the sexes is identical and equates to 0.36 DLPE. But it’s not all bad news for women. Over the past five years, DLPE for men have been on the increase while the reverse is true

for women. A study of May’s statistics highlight a 19 per cent increase in absenteeism in men since 2012 while absenteeism in women has decreased by 17 per cent. The FirstCare service is designed to provide health and wellbeing advice from day one to help speed up recovery and return to work. It brings together three elements that are key to improving productivity through reduced absence: nurse-led wellbeing care, simple admin for everyone in an organisation and real-time data and reporting. Updated quarterly, the Absence Management Barometer utilises information from the nurse-led absence system, with the data then used as a benchmarking tool for UK businesses to help them reduce absenteeism and their corporate health costs. It tracks absence through a variety of parameters, including sector, industry, job role, medical condition, gender, age group, region, service length and employment status. The average organisation loses approximately £1,000 per employee each year due to absence. Updated daily, all stats can be viewed live on the FirstCare website while the report can be downloaded each quarter on the day it is published. Not only does it give an account of the previous quarter’s trends on absenteeism, it also predicts absenteeism rates for the following quarter to help employers plan and manage staff wellbeing. This is based upon data from previous years where trends tend to align with seasonal adjustments and major, annual events.

Fun, some sun and a great weekend of music! The Horsham Garden Music Festival team are proud to report (and boast) a fantastic first weekend at the 2017 event. The Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park was buzzing on both Saturday and Sunday, when record breaking numbers attended. Families and friends from the local community and visitors from afar were treated to two days of FREE music in the themes: Musical Mayhem! which took place on Saturday and Sunday offering Jazz, Swing and Blues. The talent was young and old and the audience mirrored the same everyone was catered for. Visitors enjoyed bubbly and beer, hotdogs, burgers and healthy offerings, along with candy for the kiddies of Horsham too. Saturday’s line up included the energetic and wonderful Horsham based Gospel choir, Singergy, and

the crowd pleasing Okee Dokee band with their eccentric instruments and marvellous sounds. Emilee Lucia and Lucy Francis wowed and delighted young audiences with Disney classics and Anabel Mather returned to perform amazing covers (on acoustic guitar) by Lady Gaga and Birdie, among others. The day closed when an enormous ensemble of Rock Choir delivered a flawless performance, raising the audience to their feet in an encore. The audience packed and left the gardens on day one smiling - a memorable day! The Royal British Legion band kicked off Sunday with a medley of tunes, looking dashing as always. They were followed by the smooth sounds of Mr G and The Bluebeats, who had a huge following in the crowd. Next in line was swing band, The Hucksters, who

had the audience up and jiving along. Anabel Mather delivered another flawless performance and the weekend ended with the glamorous ladies from Angel Delights. This year the event team were pleased to bring interactive and inclusive play to the children, who attended with the skills of Springboard and Circus Wurx. Free face painting was also available all weekend... for the adults too. This weekend promises to be another fantastic line up that is not to be missed, with Saturday taking us back in time to the 80s and the final day (23 July) will be Rocking 2017’s festival to a close. The weather looks promising and the line-up even more so - So stock up on the sunscreen, keep the bottled water on ice and join in the fun at Horsham Park this weekend.

The Capitol Summer School presents BUGSY MALONE Friday 11 & Saturday 12 August

No Finer Life: Play to be shown at Cowfold Village Hall

The Horsham Food and Drink Festival comes to Cowfold Village Hall, on Sunday 24 September, with a play telling the true life story of an inspirational farming fam-

ily, written by BBC’s Archers agricultural writer, Graham Harvey. One of two London-born brothers, George wrote The Farming Ladder in 1944, telling their story of a dream that had come true. In 1924, even though they had no experience, the brothers had scraped together enough cash to pay for a small rented Cotswold farm, just as farming was entering the deepest of recessions. Yet their methods turned it into one of the most productive farms in all of England. By the time of World War Two, when embattled Britain faced starvation, farmers, by the bus-load, visited the little farm to see for themselves

how farming might be done at a time of crisis. This is Elizabeth’s story... What inspires a young Somerset land girl to set off in search of a best selling author in the darkest days of war? The story moves between the 1940s and the current day, reflecting that the love of the countryside and the need to protect it are timeless. Graham Harvey, for twenty years the Agricultural Story Editor of The Archers, will be at the show for a Q&A session after the play at Cowfold Village Hall. Tickets (£10) include a bottle of Silly Moo Cider and are available from Union Jack Farm Shop Cowfold or online: www.nofinerlife.co.uk

Heron Way and Southwater win school sports prizes

Primary School District Sports Martin Read - Sports Reporter At the District Sports tournament for larger schools, held at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, Heron Way and Southwater Junior Academy were crowned champions. For years 3+4 the event was based on the Quadkids format with every child participating in four disciplines, which Heron Way won amid stiff competition from 19 other teams. Then, in the afternoon, year 5+6 children engaged in a wider range of ac-

tivities with Southwater emerging triumphant. Harry Long (Year 4) from Greenway top-scored for the boys with 235 points, 17 ahead of Joe Bovan (Kingslea) and Matthew Moss from Leechpool, while Sam Abrehart from Southwater notched up 204 to lead the Y3 boys. For the girls, Southwater Y4’s Maddie Wilders headed the individual standings from Heron Way’s Emily Sturt and Maisie Ayling, again from Southwater. Ruby Marr was the leading Y3 girl, amassing 166 points. In the individual contests Harry Long

won the sprint, just shading Jack Tyler from Billingshurst and, for the girls, Greenway’s Imogen Cochrane crossed the line two tenths of a second ahead of Maisie Ayling. Holbrook produced the best two performances in the standing long jump, Ben Groarke and Freddie Dennyson keeping Sam Abrehart at bay. Y4 girls longest jumper was Maisie Ayling, with Molly Jones of Kingslea not far behind. The middle distance running category was won by Heron Way Y3’s Ted Jacobs, leading home Joe Bovan and Oliver Thorn from Kingslea, Jamie Tait from Heron Way and Zach Langford (Arunside). Nicole Claustres was fasted girl, pipping Emily Sturt. And, Harry Long added to his other successes by winning the howler throwing from Greenway team mate Carter Ayley, Maddie Wilders threw furthest among the girls’ 99 contestants, Eve Knight from Greenway coming second. Ian Ford, Horsham District Council’s Sports Development Officer told the District Post: “Heron Way’s consistency earned them the Y 3+4 championship with 2816 overall points, ahead of Southwater’s 2788 with Greenway third on 2745.” While Paul Showell, organiser of the Y 5+6 event summed up saying: “Everything went brilliantly with a high standard of competition. Madeline Way of Shelley and Ruby Howard of Southwater won three gold medals each with outstanding performances.” Southwater topped the Y 5+6 table 10 points ahead of Greenway.

Touchtennis and Junior Summer Camps at Horsham Lawn Tennis Club Tennis Horsham Lawn Tennis Club have just held their first Touchtennis Family Fun day to encourage more families to participate in tennis and come along to the family friendly Club. A BBQ followed with the Men’s final of Wimbledon on the screens in the bar. Head coach Glyn Jukes said: “Touch tennis is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon with the whole family. In a similar concept to 5 a side football Touchtennis is played on a smaller court, with 21inch rackets and foam balls, it can take place on any flat space, indoors or outside. The specifically designed ball and unique rules creates a level playing field whereby different abilities can enjoy playing together.” Jukes added: “The equipment and rules are a real leveller and we saw some fantastic rallies with some of the team players hitting with some of the children and social players. Our emphasis is really to get more families having the opportunity to try something new together”. The Cricketfield Road club hope to make Touchtennis

a regular in their timetable to complement an already busy schedule with coaching for Adults and Juniors, social tennis and regular club nights. The coaching team are also planning the extremely popular Junior summer camps which run for 4 weeks starting on July 31. The camps are open to juniors of all ages and abilities and are run by LTA Licensed Coach Glyn Jukes and assistants. Each camp runs for either 3 hours daily, 9am 12pm, or from 1pm to 4pm – or participants can enjoy the full 7 hour session with lunch in the club house at 12 noon. The camps are divided into ability levels with activities ranging from mini tennis to advanced juniors, the main focus being on developing tennis skills, covering everything from basic strokes for beginners to match tactics and techniques for the more advanced. Places are available for morning and afternoon sessions and the full all day camps - for more information on the camps or Horsham Lawn Tennis Club in general contact Glyn on 07789 725333 or email glynjukes4@hotmail.com.

Determined Horsham hold Nomads to a draw

Saturday July 15 - Sussex Premier League Preston Nomads 292-7 (56 overs) Horsham 179-6 (54 overs) Match drawn – Horsham 6 points Preston Nomads 10 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter A minute’s silence before the match marked the untimely

passing of West Chiltington’s popular, well known all-rounder Tim Munday who died during his club’s game against Middleton the week before. Horsham’s Shaka Shambrook saying: “Tim was a tough cookie on the pitch and a gent off it. Snatched too early he will be sorely missed in local cricketing circles and our thoughts are with his family and all at West Chiltington & Thakeham CC.” In the first game of the season at Fulking Preston Nomads scored 289-5, beating Horsham convincingly. Last Saturday, put in, they made 292-7, but, employing baffling tactics, were unable to overcome Horsham who batted out for a reasonably comfortable draw. For Nomads, Dan Phillips’ century followed his 150 against Brighton & Hove the previous Saturday and at Cricketfield Road it took a sharp close catch to dismiss him, Phillips saying: “It’s a lovely track here and I wouldn’t mind playing on it every week! There’s something in it for the bowlers, its a great cricket wicket.” In mid innings a Nomads’ score in excess of 300 looked likely until Michael Munday (3-81) and Mika Ekstrom (2-61) pegged them back by hollowing out the middle order, but, skipper Jeremy Green (62) and

Stuart Faith (42 not out) ensured a demanding total. Replying, Horsham were soon 13-2, South African Craig Alexander - with over 100 first class games under his belt – accounting for both openers. Will Collard, on Sussex’s radar, took four wickets but Horsham Captain Michael Thornely (43) and Nick Oxley, with an unbeaten 64, assisted by brothers Tom and James Johnson, secured the draw. Nomads thought Horsham should have gone for the runs, but with five wickets down and barely half way to the target a Horsham win was unlikely unless Nomads kept them in the game by dangling a carrot, encouraging shot playing against attacking fields. It was up to Nomads to bowl Horsham out, but with men pushed back on the boundary, Horsham rightly chose not to gift away the game with rash shots. On Saturday (tomorrow) Horsham, now fourth, are at home again, against seventh placed Hastings, whom they beat easily in May, skittling them for 87. On Sunday Horsham host two Sussex Cup semi finals – at noon the Second XI take on Three Bridges in an appetiser for cupholders Horsham 1s, versus Roffey, a proper local derby, at 3.30.

Roffey stay top with another big win Saturday July 15 Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 144 all out (55.4 overs) Roffey 146-4 (32.5 overs) Roffey won by 6 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Brighton & Hove 4 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Another strong performance keeps Roffey top, one point clear of East Grinstead, who also won. Roffey Captain Matt Davies won the toss again – his ninth success in ten games – and, put in, Brighton reached 29-1, but the introduction of Alex Collins, bowling from the pavilion end, soon reduced them to 38-3, including the wicket of opener Liam Smith, a Sussex 2nd XI player. Brighton skipper Chris Grammer made 30 but progress was slow and meaningful partnerships absent, Rohit Jagota sweeping away the tail, the hosts subsiding to 144 all out - Collins taking 4-22 off 10 overs and Jagota 4-39. Theo Rivers, whose 52 included 8 fours, and Jagota (26) put on 63 for Roffey’s first wicket, from where it was relatively plain sailing, an unbroken stand of 44 between Captain Matt Davies and Usman Khan seeing them home with more than 20 overs unused. With Chris Atherton serving a disciplinary ban Brighton used just three bowlers, Simon Hetherton, operating unchanged, taking all four

wickets (for 77), Roffey, though underlined their supremacy with 31 boundaries. Alex Collins told the District Post: “The wicket was really slow and the ball seamed around enabling me to get four of them knicking off caught. I was a bit disappointed not to get a 5 for but it was great to get a good bowl for the firsts.” In 7 of their 10 games Roffey have bowled out the opposition for less than 150. In a massive weekend for the club, tomorrow (Saturday), Roffey have a demanding away game – the possible title-defining clash - with star-studded strong contenders East Grinstead, whom they eliminated from the Sussex Cup earlier this month after suffering league reverses in recent seasons. And, on Sunday, they have another testing challenge when they go to Horsham, taking on their near neighbours in the semi final of the Sussex Cup, the winner having a big day at Hove next month, which Roffey are yet to savour. Roffey were eliminated in the semi final last year, whereas in the previous 35 year history of the competition Horsham have won it a record 13 times. Roffey, though, knocked Horsham out of the National Cup last year and bowled them out cheaply in the league in both 2016 and this year, all three victories coming at home. Roffey wins at Cricketfield Road are less frequent, so a competitive game beckons.

Positive Pulborough Bank Yet More League Points! Billingshurst Bowls Round Up

Bowls Jane gray - Pulborough BC Another busy week saw Pulborough play 3 league games away and a friendly at home on Sunday. One of the longest trips of the season to Crablands in Selsey, proved to be worth every mile, despite the torrential rain that greeted them! Pulborough topped the table in the Brookes Motors League in 2016 and hopes are high for another strong performance this year. 2 triples played in soggy conditions, with the friendly rink alongside calling it a day after just the trial ends! Alan Jordan and team managed a tight win, after the game was cut short by the rain after 11 ends. They finished 12/10. Top rink went to skip, Paul

Day, with Julie Day as lead and Mick Ralph as number 2, who won 9 of their 11 ends to finish with a fantastic score of 24/4. With the game being played to half way, full points were given and Pulborough netted themselves a maximum 6 points. A trip to Norfolk in Littlehampton helped to dry out the bowls kit from the previous day, but the result was unfortunately reversed, despite the best efforts of the Pulborough side to carry on their previous home performance, where they scored 6 points on the 23rd of May. A friendly in September will give PBC a chance to exact revenge before the season closes! 4 rinks played in the West Sussex Bowls League against local rivals, Storrington, on Saturday

from 2pm. With 2 rink wins and a draw, Pulborough put on a strong performance with a quality side of players. Ivan Salmon and team, brought home a 1 point draw on rink 2, whist John Brown, Melvin Green, Mick Ayling and Steve Meadowcroft won over half of their ends to win by 3 shots 18/15. Top rink went to Captain and skip, Paul Day, with Adey Stratton as lead, Mick Ralph as 2 and Steve Adsett as 3, beating some familiar names on the opposing team, to bring home 2 points and a 21/16 win. A haul of 5 valuable league points will help towards Pulborough’s march towards the top of div2. After playing Stedham away a matter of weeks ago, it was nice to catch up and continue the banter out on the green! Cloudy skies on Sunday left question marks over the weather, but it stayed dry for the duration, allowing for close games and tight scores. 1 win, 1 draw and a close second place, meant that Pulborough came out on top with a score of 59/42, with top rink going again to Paul Day and Steve & Linda Meadowcroft, 29 shots to 10. A busy week next week, sees Pulborough away at Worthing Pavilion in the WSBL on Monday, away at Southbourne in the BML on Weds, At home to the Grasshoppers on Thurs 20th from 6pm, at home to Tarring Priory in the WSBL on Fri 21st from 6pm and holding their annual Family Fun Day on Sunday 23rd from 2pm, everyone welcome!

The visitors raced away to a comfortable 21 shot lead after 9 ends. The hosts managed to put the brakes on ‘Hurst but could not overtake them with the visitors eventually claiming victory by 33 shots. The visitors were most likely very pleased when the tea break beckoned as ‘Hurst had strode away to lead by 29 shots. St Francis came back after the intermission hopeful that “it would all change after tea”, unfortunately for them it was not to be with Billingshurst running out winners by 44 shots to claim their third win in 3 consecutive days.
