Enchanted Horsham is here!

Start the Summer holidays with this fantastic family festival Anyone walking through Horsham Park this week cannot have failed to miss the hive of activity that is creating Horsham’s new Summer Festival. With a vintage funfair and circus tent clearly visible, The District Post were granted a preview of the event and are here to share our findings with you! Trust me, on the 27th, 28th and 29th July, Enchanted Horsham is going to bring Horsham Park to life as never before! Drawing its inspiration from Horsham’s mystical history and folklore, be prepared for an experience that is full of full of magic, wonder and stunningly beautiful illuminated creatures. And in addition there will be an eclectic mix of live music, street theatre, a vintage funfair, circus performances, dance and five spectacular illuminated gardens, plus a boutique market , street food, pop up bars, homewares, art and fashion. You can meet wonderful life size puppets as they roam, entertain and tell their unique tale. You must explore Professor Octavia’s Magical Menagerie to meet the rare and beautiful creatures she has captured on her travels and you will marvel at the street performers, belly dancers and fortune tellers. The vintage fun fair will bring laughter from times gone by and

don’t forget to try your hand in the circus workshops, as the eclectic mix of reggae, acoustic, jazz, swing, samba and salsa provides the festivals music mix on the main stage. Strike your pose in the fashion tent as you strut down the catwalk in support of St Catherine’s Hospice, shop in the market for a myriad of craft, lifestyle, toys and curiosities and feast on a sensational range of global street food stalls and pop up restaurants which nestle alongside beer, cider, gin, cocktail, champagne and wine bars. Then as daylight turns to dusk, five illuminated gardens will reveal themselves and magically bring to life unicorns, dragons eggs and mystical tales with beautiful illuminations, stunning projections, light shows, performances and music. See the glow of the magical dragon’s eggs in the Dragons Egg Hatchery, glimpse the fire dragon as she burns brightly in the centre of the Dragons Maze, and hear the mermaid sing her tale of pirates and their bounty as illuminated smugglers ships bob gently in the breeze. Spot the water dragon hidden beneath the calm waters surface and relax as lit woodland creatures emerge from the dark, and the light shows enthrall you in the surrounding fairylike setting. Residents and visitors alike are being urged to explore Horsham Town centre whilst it is in full bloom with some stunning summer floral displays, courtesy of Horsham District Council’s Parks and Countryside team. Head to the historic Carfax market and take a stroll through West Street to the Bishopric, where the waterfall has been re-instated. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “It’s fantastic to see Horsham

bursting with colour this summer, with more planters and hanging baskets than ever before in the town centre. “Providing colour and attractive surroundings for our residents and visitors to enjoy is a key priority for the Council’s Parks and Countryside team, it improves the overall visitor experience to the town, which in turn is good for the local economy. “If you are in the area, do come and enjoy the displays, which are

Four young musicians competed to become Sussex Young Musician of the Year 2018 on Saturday 14 July at St Andrew’s Church in Burgess Hill. At the end of the evening, the winner was announced as Rebecca Leggett – a mezzo singer originally from Haywards Heath – who received £1000 from Neil Peskett, of Traditional Oak and Timber, to help with her musical studies. Organised by Sussex choir Coro Nuovo, the event showcased the talents of four young musicians from Sussex, who had been selected as finalists from over 31

talented entrants. After listening to a 10-minute performance from each contestant, the judges (Gareth Hancock, Director of Opera, Royal Academy of Music; Jeff Lloyd-Roberts, International Opera Singer; and Kate Kent, Chair of the Choir) had the unenviable task of selecting a winner. On the night, Rebecca’s overall performance captivated the panel. Rebecca has been studying at Trinity Laban in London for a Bachelor of Music degree. In September, she will be taking a postgraduate MA course at the world-famous Royal College of Music. Already

a prize winner (having won the TL Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Competition in 2016), Rebecca was also a member of the prestigious Genesis Sixteen, a programme specially designed to nurture the next generation of talented singers. The runners up were announced as: George Robinson (classical guitar), Andrew Martin (flute), and Claire Ward (soprano). On winning the competition, Rebecca commented: “I am over the moon to have won Coro Nuovo’s Young Musician of the Year! It means a great deal to win a competition that supports young musicians from Sussex. I have lived here all my life and this county is very special to me. There are very few music competitions and bursaries like this in Sussex, and Coro Nuovo has shown that you can run a wonderful choir, and support local music students at the same time.” Kate Kent, the Chair of Coro Nuovo, said: “Once again, we have been amazed by the quality of the Sussex Young Musician applications we received this year. It has been an incredibly hard job selecting the winner. We are also grateful to local company Traditional Oak and Timber who again were the main sponsors of the competition.” For more information on the work of the choir ,, pleas visit: https://coronuovo.org.uk/

Does your child love stories about animals? Inspired by the recent BBC 500 Word children’s story competition, Horsham District Council has launched its own children’s writing competition. Why not have some fun this summer holiday and get your children to write a short story about The Townies and The Parkies’ adventures in Horsham Town Centre or Horsham Park? Based on the Albion Way subway original murals illustrated by local artist Katie Wells, the delightful animal characters featured on the murals have already become known to local children through a number of recent town and park trails. Children in two age groups, 5-9 years and 10-13 years, are invited to submit stories (of no more than 501 words) via an online form, with the help of a parent or guardian, at www.towniesandparkies.info. With limited numbers of judges available, entries are limited to the first 100 received in each age category. Entries will be closed online from this point. Winners will be announced on a live Facebook stream on Tuesday 18 September at 6pm and contacted directly thereafter. One winner and four runners up will be chosen in each age group. It is planned that the winning two stories will be made into a small book to be illustrated by Katie Wells and sold this Christmas though partners, with profits going to local children’s charities - Chestnut Tree House, Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity and The Springboard Project. Commenting on the competition, Cabinet Member for Culture

and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “The Townies and Parkies trails have been a great success and I would encourage children across the District to take part in the next instalment of our summer activity programme. “Get your children to use their free time over the school summer holidays to fire up their creativity to write some amazing stories. “Getting children excited about reading and story writing has to be a good thing, and it would be amazing for them to get their stories made into a book for such good local causes.” Each winner will also receive a framed original illustration from their story in the book. Winners and runners up will receive signed copies of the book and Waterstones gift vouchers. This activity promoting Horsham Town Centre and Horsham Park is organised by Horsham District Council, with Horsham town’s branch of Waterstones, Maverick Publishing, and West Sussex Library Service. Other judging partners include local authors, Gobsmack Comics, My Fair Kind Child, Cocoa Loco, and Katie Wells Illustration. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: “I am so pleased to hear Horsham library is involved in this competition. “It is a brilliant way of encouraging children’s creativity and I look forward to seeing some of the stories as they come in.” Full details, including online entry form and full terms and conditions, are all available from www.towniesand[parkies.info

Forest school walks 1000 miles to fight cancer

On Monday July 23, the penultimate day of term before the summer break, all the pupils and staff of The Forest School walked at least 1 mile to raise money for Cancer Research UK. They were joined at the end of the day by parents, grandparents and friends. “We’re walking today because a member of staff, Julian Platten, who has just come back to work following successful treatment for cancer, asked the school to get involved with Cancer Research UK’s “Relay for Life,” said Siobhan Den-

ning, Headteacher, “We’ve given it a bit of a Forest twist and, instead of walking for 24 hours in a relay, every single pupil and member of staff is walking at least a mile. We’re all paying a minimum of £1 to wear “mufti” and the majority of people have made sure they’re wearing something purple – Cancer Research UK’s “survivor” colour. “We’re also asking people to visit our website and donate to our Just Giving page for the Forest Strollers – we’re aiming to raise at least £1000.” Julian was delighted with the

school’s response: “I’m not the only member of Forest staff who has successfully fought off cancer this year. Andrea Conroy and Rochelle Abrahams are fellowsurvivors and I know of least two others who are facing treatment in the near future. The sad fact is that cancer touches 1 in 2 people these days – the good news is that the great work of Cancer Research UK means that the survival rate is going up all the time.” The Headteacher’s PA, Andrea, was overwhelmed by the response: “I’m also delighted that our local Tesco has donated 800 bottles of water, to keep everyone cool during the day.”’ Matt Parsons, Head of PE, mapped out a mile-long route for the school to do around the perimeter of the school field and Gareth Good, Senior Assistant Headteacher, worked with pupils to create a Celebration Arch of purple balloons, to mark the end of the route. Siobhan added: “I’m out walking with the pupils and my colleagues, and it’s wonderful to see the whole school out walking and wearing their purple with pride. A great way to finish the term!” If you wish to contribute to this cause, please visit: http://relay. cancerresearchuk.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/General?px=1251142&pg =personal&fr_id=1794

Breach of newly adopted Public Space Protection Order the Council is serious about tackling anti-social behaviour and we will continue to work actively with the Police to enforce all aspects of the PSPO we introduced earlier in the year.

Horsham District Council has successfully prosecuted a Maidstone man for breaching its Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which deals with the racing of horse-drawn vehicles on dual carriageways in Horsham District. This is the first conviction by the Council for the failure to comply with the Public Space Protection Order which was introduced in the Horsham District in April 2018. The offence was firstly dealt with by way of a fixed penalty notice, which was issued at the scene of incident on the A24. The case was heard at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 13 July 2018. Tom King was fined £440, with a victim surcharge of £44, and the Council’s costs of £450. He did not attend the hearing, so the court heard the evidence and found him guilty in his absence. Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “This conviction shows that

“We will continue to work with the police to address anti-social behaviour in problem areas; this includes taking action where necessary, but also signposting vulnerable individuals to

support services that are available in the District.” The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), was introduced in Horsham District in April 2018, and sits amongst a broad range of powers and tools to help tackle antisocial behaviour locally. PSPOs are aimed at ensuring public spaces can be enjoyed by everyone free from anti-social behaviour. The other prohibitions addressed by the PSPO include: Consumption of Alcohol in a Public Place Anti-social use of Vehicles Anti-social use of Horse Drawn Vehicles. Dog Fouling and control of dogs Parkour in Horsham Town Centre If you witness or are a victim of anti-social behaviour in Horsham District, please contact Sussex Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, you can report online using the Sussex Police website: www.sussex.police.uk.

Parting is such sweet sorrow for Howard of Horsham’s Candy Box Photo supplied by Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery

traditional tobacconists, recently having added vaping materials to its range of sweets, papers, magazines and takeaway sandwiches – and there is even richsmelling, loose pipe tobacco in jars

I’ve had five and a half great years here and have thoroughly enjoyed every day of it so I’m very sad to be going,

Howard Bayliss is very sad to be selling up at Horsham’s Candy Box, the iconic newsagent, confectioner and tobacconists adjacent to the bandstand in the Carfax – a sentiment echoed by his loyal customers. Howard, born and bred in Horsham, tells the District Post: “I’ve had five and a half great years here and have thoroughly enjoyed every day of it so I’m very sad to be going, especially as the Candy Box is in such a superb location, right in

the heart of the town and has been going really well in such a lively place. And, I’m sure that when Piries Place re-opens the footfall will be even better. It’s been my life, so I don’t really want to leave, it’s just that I want to spend a little more time with the family.” Howard and his friendly team have specialised in giving customers what they want – good, friendly old-fashioned service with a wide range of products – and have got to know their many regulars on

first named terms, Howard saying: “We get plenty of visitors calling in, too and it was great when the space became available outside the shop, enabling us to serve soft drinks, tea, coffee and ice creams for there, allowing people to rest awhile and watch more hurried others rush by. It’s wonderful to see them enjoying the sunshine.” The Candy Box is one of Horsham’s very best known shops, one of the last remaining independent traders in the town and arguably the last

on the shelf. Entering the Candy Box – a proper bijou, welcoming shop – transports customers into a comfortable, reassuring world, and as its centenary approaches we can reflect on what the building has witnessed – the transformation from horses drawn vehicles, Christmas festivities, remembrance parades, pancake races, weekly markets, and people coming and going from the Theatre Royal, where Sir Michael Caine had his first walk on professional part. It has seen Spitfires and enemy aircraft overhead, fair rides,

concerts, and so much more – the Candy Box is a real slice of Horsham’s history, Howard Bayliss summing up with: “There is such a good atmosphere around the Candy Box, especially when there is music on the bandstand. It’s the people that makes the shop so enjoyable. I’ll be sorry to go, but I hope whoever takes it on will get as much pleasure from it as I have: I’m sure they will!” Long may Horsham’s very special Candy Box continue – a convenient place to pick up a copy of your District Post from the stand by the front door! Prepare to fly away for a theatre experience for all the family as you battle fearsome pirates, encounter troublesome fairies, and stumble into the chaotic world of the Lost Boys as HAODS bring the enchanting adventure, ‘Wendy & Peter Pan’, to The Capitol Horsham this August. A land of magic and wonder await you on this unforgettable Neverland journey as the world of the classic J.M Barrie story comes to life on the Horsham stage... but with a bit of a twist. ‘Wendy & Peter Pan’ is an acclaimed modern re-telling of the childhood fiction you know and

love by Ella Hickson, written for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which tells the story through Wendy Darling’s eyes as the mischievous Peter Pan- the boy who never grows up- tumbles into her life. Join Wendy as she flies off on an enchanting and daring journey to Neverland with her siblings, John and Michael, as they search for their “lost” brother. However, danger awaits in the form of the most evil Pirate in the world- the formidable Capitol Hook, the delightfully dithering Smee, and Hook’s grim, dastardly (and pretty incompetent) crew of Pirates. Will Wendy be able to find her inner strength to unite the many and

varied characters of Neverland, including the Troublesome fairy Tink, the tough-as-nails - Tiger Lily and a whole host of lively Lost Boys, to find her lost brother and kick some “pirate bum”? HAODS are delighted to bring you this timeless and touching story as a whole fantasy world come to life in a play full of laughter, and even a few tears, as Wendy truly learns what it means to grow up. Featuring a talented cast of junior performers, a real-life Pirate Ship, and with an original musical score written especially for this production, ‘Wendy & Peter Pan’ is a magical adventure for all ages- the perfect summer holiday treat! Director Yvonne Chadwell says, “This is a true HAODS collaboration with a set designed by Amy Blaskett (Tiger Lily) and made by the back stage team (including some parents) as we journey to the land beneath the children’s’ beds. The music once again has been created especially for this production by Andrew Donovan (Mr Darling and Hook) and Mrs Darling (Roz Hall) has created some dance sequences as well as helping out with voice coaching. Our talented group has had to learn some stage fighting techniques. As well as having fun on a pirate ship, we have mermaids and a crocodile as well as a sneezing pirate and of course Smee.

Tink (Tess Kennedy) is a feisty colourful fairy who looks to outwit Captain Hook and his team with the girls under Captain Wendy Darling. From a Director’s point of view, working with split teams (our junior cast will be doing alternate performances) is always a challenge however with everyone having a good time, the show also allows younger performers to experience a large stage and hone their acting skills. We look forward to taking you on a journey past the stars to Neverland and hope you enjoy the adventure - Peter Pan is on his way!” ‘Wendy & Peter Pan’ is flying onto The Capitol main stage from Tuesday 14 until Saturday 18 August, with performances Tuesday – Friday evenings at 7:30pm, a Saturday matinee at 2:00pm and Saturday evening at 7:00pm. Don’t miss out on this very big unforgettable Neverland adventure. Book your tickets from The Capitol box office today. Visit www.thecapitolhorsham.com or call 01403 750 220. HAODS (Horsham Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society) have been entertaining the audiences of Horsham for over 60 years. A Centenary Celebration at Amberley Museum

Over the weekend of the 14th & 15th July, Amberley Museum hosted its annual Rail Gala, proudly displaying their locomotives and industrial rail collection. As part of this day they celebrated the 100th birthday of ‘Peter’ their Bagnall steam locomotive. Peter came to the museum back in 1982 after a lengthy restoration project led by Doug Bentley and members of the Amberley rail group, Peter became operational at the museum in 1994. To this day Peter has been a hugely popular attraction for young and old alike, pulling the Santa Express at Christmas, giving mums and dads a once in a lifetime opportunity to drive a steam engine on Mothering Sunday and Father’s Day; as well as running at many of their major events. They celebrated his birthday with a locomotive cavalcade on both days, finishing with three cheers for Peter, the cutting of his birthday cake

and a toast. The time has now come when Peter is in need of boiler repairs and a full service, with costs expecting to reach up to £40,000. The museum has started their Peter restoration fundraising campaign, and already gratefully received donations from Cliffe Hill Quarry and the Narrow Gauge Society. The campaign has been launched within the museum and on their JustGiving page: www. justgiving.com/amberleymuseum. On the Saturday 14th, the museum also took part in a transfer of work plates for the Peckett locos 1315, and 1316 Scaldwell. It was discovered that the plates were being held in the wrong collections as they were previously acquired with a larger acquisition. Scaldwell was transferred from Amberley Museum to the Southwold collection last summer, but the plates to go with the loco were on displayed on loan at Chasewater railway, from part

of the Industrial Railway Society’s collection. The plate at Amberley believed to belong to Scaldwell, was in fact for the Lamport loco (which unfortunately was scrapped many years ago). Having taken over a year to locate all the plates, they were officially exchanged on the Saturday afternoon with the help of Colin Billinghurst from the Industrial Railway Society, and Simon Wilson from the Southwold Railway and John Stanton representing Amberley Museum. Later in the season they will have more narrow gauge action on the railway, with their Petrol Locos event on Sunday 19th August. There will also be a celebration for the 100 years of their petrol powered “Protect” Simplex No.1381, which was one of a hundred of similar locomotives built for use in the World War I trenches. Although the 1381 remained in the UK unused and eventually passed into industrial use before becoming part of the Brockham collection, which later moved to Amberley Museum. The loco returned to service at the museum for use on event days and holidays to help demonstrate the evolution of the industrial narrow gauge locomotive. This year the Museum is celebrating its 40th season, and they are hosting over 50 events in 2018 from children’s activity days to classic vehicle shows. They will be open from the 7th March to 28th October, for more information on their events, or education programme, please see their website for full details www.amberleymuseum.co.uk.

How to choose your Estate Agent Top tips for choosing an estate agent, from NAEA Propertymark

Selecting an estate agent to market your home can be a daunting task, especially with so many to choose from. When trusting someone to sell your biggest asset, it’s essential you know what you’re signing up for in order to get it sold quickly, professionally and achieving the best price possible. NAEA Propertymark have outlined a few things to consider before choosing an agent. Make a shortlist Start by creating a list of possible agents. Reach out to family, friends and neighbours for any recommendations. It’s important you do some research to see if the estate agent not only marketing but is also actually achieving sales on your type of house in your area, as some estate agents specialise in specific types of

te Quo rict Dist n e Th he w t Pos ing book

properties. Consider looking on online sites such as On The Market, Rightmove, or Zoopla and check that the estate agent has taken attractive pictures of all the important features of the houses they are selling. Ask questions and get a valuation Once you have narrowed down a shortlist of possible agents, arrange a visit to their office to meet them face-to-face as this is a good time to determine if they are friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Following this, contact a few different agents to provide a valuation and marketing strategy individually for your property and ask them what their advice is for a successful sale. They should be able to provide some local comparisons and reasons to justify the price

they have come up with. Ask lots of questions and make a mental note of the agent’s punctuality, politeness, knowledge of the process and management of your expectations. What are their fees? You will then need to look carefully at the nitty-gritty of the contract and the agent’s fees. If you are selling your house using a traditional, high-street estate agent, their fee will be based on a percentage of the price paid by the buyer, but as in any contract check what you are paying for and what is not included. In order to avoid unexpected costs, don’t sign anything that you don’t understand and make sure to ask about anything that is not clear. Avoid tying yourself into a long agency period. Check industry credentials Remember the industry is as yet unregulated with little barrier to entry. It’s wise to choose an estate agent that is a member of a trade body, who applies to a strict code of conduct, as this indicates a higher level of professionalism and diligence. NAEA Propertymark Protected agents will give you the assurance that your estate agent follows best practice, meets all requirements of the profession, has voluntarily chosen to be regulated and works to high industry standards. They hold professional indemnity insurance and if they are holding monies are required to be covered by Client Money Protection to give you peace of mind throughout the sale of your house.

See what kind of service is offered Don’t be afraid of asking lots of questions about the service offered. This includes finding out how easy it will be to get hold of your agent, and how often they will update you on their progress. As a seller, you need to be fully involved and informed at all times. You also need to trust that the agent is batting for you, not the buyer. Find an agent you can trust Finally, as a homeowner, having an estate agent that you believe in is a must. Whether through local word of mouth, testimonial or Internet reviews, start off on a good foot with an estate agent that you feel confident in, and with whom you have empathy. Mark Hayward, Chief Executive, NAEA Propertymark comments: “Choosing the right estate agent is crucial to the successful sale of your property. Working with a professional agent who has an in-depth understanding and appreciation for the local and regional market place will ensure your property is marketed effectively to the right buyers. Contrary to common thinking, not all agents are the same and some will be more effective than others so it’s important that you do your research. Picking the right estate agent to market your home can make the whole process run smoother but can also make a difference to the general experience – which should be a very positive one.”

Chapeau launches Horsham Cyclists on Tour trip apron for a brewer’s one. We named the brewery Chapeau as it is a cycling term meaning ‘hats off to you’. We are happy to sponsor the group’s cycling jerseys because this ambitious cycling adventure perfectly encapsulates what Chapeau Brewing loves and we’re very proud to be involved, hopefully encouraging more people to get out an their bikes in Horsham. Michael and I may be pretty average cyclists, but we know what we want to be drinking at the end of a ride - we’ve developed our beers based on what we like to drink

Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Thursday a group of intrepid cyclists – Horsham Cycling Companions – supported by Horsham brewery Chapeau, departed from Horsham en route for Noirmoutier-en-l’lle, just off the coast in the Pays de Loire region in western France. Taking part in the opening stages of the Tour de France, Chris Holmes told the District Post: “After the train to Portsmouth and ferry to St Malo our party of six are pedalling around 150 miles in two days to watch the Tour, staying in gites and B&Bs along the way. We’re tak-

ing some of Chapeau’s trademark Tour beers with us, especially their Summer Flamme Rouge, which we’re particularly looking forward to seeing next to the Flamme Rouge itself!” Katherine at Chapeau says: “The brewery has grown out of a love of beer and an obsession with cycling. Having lived and worked in Alpe d’Huez for several years it was impossible for the cycling bug not to creep under our skin, and to be able to combine this with beer, seemed only natural for our brewery. Michael, has spent 20 years working as a chef and brings an excellent understanding of flavour to his brewing and relishes swapping his chef’s

The brewery has grown out of a love of beer and an obsession with cycling ourselves and hope you’ll enjoy drinking them too!” British racing cyclist Chris Froome is one of the most successful riders in the history of the Tour de France and will be looking to add another win to his four previous victories. The progress of the Horsham Cycling Companions trip can be followed via @chapeaubrewing on Facebook and on Twitter and Instagram, too. Chapeau will be celebrating the group’s return at their Redkiln Close taproom, which is open to the public on Friday’s from noon-8pm and on Saturdays from 10am to noon.

Roffey Barnstorm through to the Sussex Cup Final Sunday July 22 - Sussex GrayNicholls T20 Cup – Semi Final Hastings & St Leonards Priory 125 all out (20 overs) Roffey 131-2 (16 overs) Roffey won by 7 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter It took Roffey just 55 minutes to overtake Hastings’ modest total to secure a place in the Sussex Cup Final at the county’s Hove HQ (on Sunday September 9, when they will defend the title that they won for the first time last year, beating Preston Nomads with overs to spare). After winning the toss at Horntye Park Roffey inserted Hastings, and drew blood off the fourth ball of the match when Jibran Khan ran out Jason Pooley and it soon got even better, when, off 16 year old Jamie Atkins, Ben Manenti pulled off an outstanding catch running away from the wicket, leaving Hastings on 7-2 in the fourth over. Hastings, though, began a recovery with a 40 run third wicket stand – until Manenti pouched another catch – from Rohit Jagota’s bowling. But, Hastings were scoring at almost eight an over and still had the possibility to post a demanding target - until their hopes of an appearance in the final were shattered when Luke Barnard came on to bowl. Barnard’s five wickets – a rarity from a T20 four over allocation – condemned Hastings to a crash from 50-3 to 95-8, from where no meaningful challenge could be mounted. Backed by sound catching – especially an awkward low grab by Max Rivers, Barnard wrenched the heart out of Hastings’ middle order with 5-30, including two wickets off consecutive balls, before George Fleming nipped in with

another scalp and occasional bowler Jibran Khan was entrusted with the ball at the death when Hastings were throwing the bat. Khan produced two economical overs, taking the final wicket as Hastings subsided to an inadequate 125 all out. Roffey opened with the enterprising Manenti and Matt Davies and, surviving a scare apiece, they had 33 runs on the board off the first four overs. When they were both out the score was 54-2 in the ninth over, whereupon Usman Khan, striking the ball hard and cleanly, and Jagota accelerated to victory with 11 fours and 3 sixes between them to get Roffey over the line with four overs unused, Khan finishing with 37 and Jagota 45, both unbeaten. Luke Barnard told the District Post: “I was very pleased to take five wickets to help set up a great win – we fielded so much better than yesterday!” Roffey Captain Matt Davies said: “It was good to bounce back after yesterday’s disappointment in the league. I gave Jibran a bowl to break their batsmen’s rhythm – it was a bit of a gamble, but it paid off! Then we followed that up with the excellent unbroken 87 run partnership to end the game, which Rohit clinched with another trademark six.” Coach Simon Fearnley added: “Its fantastic to be in contention to pick another trophy.” It was a bad weekend for Hastings, in addition to their 1st & 2nd XIs both losing on Saturday, the 2nd XI were also eliminated from their Sussex Cup semi on Sunday. Roffey will play East Grinstead in the final – Grinstead crushed Middleton in their semi, courtesy of a stunning 138 from Fynn Hudson-Prentice, while, after narrowly defeating Ifield, Grinstead’s 2s will play Preston Nomads 2s in the curtain raiser on finals day.

Premier League round up Saturday July 21 - Sussex Premier League Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Horsham and Roffey games are reported on elsewhere in the sports Section of your District Post this week – in the other matches, Brighton & Hove, without Phil Salt and Luke Wells on Sussex duty and Matt Machan unavailable, went to the top of the table by beating lowly Hastings by 20 runs at Brighton’s Nevill Sports Ground. Brighton were 119-2 but subsided to 181 all out because of Elliot Hooper’s 8-50, but Simon Hetherton and Steven Crosby’s fifties just enabled them to overcome Middleton, who were bowled out for 161 despite Jake Woolley’s 52, Felix Sheppard taking 4-25. At Saint Hill hosts East Grinstead scored 228-9 from their

58 over allocation, Darryl Rebbetts making 81 and Matthew Reynolds taking 4-80, but in the absence of the Hatchett brothers, reigning champions East Grinstead were unable to bowl out struggling Middleton, mainly due to another not out innings by Mahesh Rawat, who scored 56 and shepherded the tail, including the match-saving 24 run last wicket partnership to secure the draw. While on their excellent batting surface at the Saffrons, Eastbourne posted the highest score of the day, declaring on 331-5, Alastair Orr batting at 7 scoring an unbeaten 104 in an unbroken 145 run sixth wicket stand after Eastbourne had been 186-5. Eastbourne went on to win by 87 runs, whipping boys Ifield being bowled out for 244 with just three balls of the match remaining. Akshay Ramani made 53, but Sussex’s Delray Rawlins starred with the ball, taking 5-45.

Saturday July 21 - Sussex Premier League Cuckfield 276-5 (58 overs) Horsham 170 all out (49.3 overs) Cuckfield won by 106 runs – Cuckfield 30 points Horsham 6 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After winning the toss Cuckfield were 0-1 when Mika Ekstrom trapped former Horsham player Joe Ludlow, but Sam Whiteman

went on to score an unbeated 153 to set Horsham a very challenging 277 run target. Five other Cuckfield batsmen got to double figures, but Whiteman was the only real difference between the two sides – Ben Caidan was second highest scorer with 32 not out, while extras contributed 31 as Captain of the day Tom Haines took 2-57 and Nick Oxley 2-62. 26 year old left hander Sam Whiteman was born in Doncaster but was taken to Australia at an early age and now

plays for Western Australia and has been in the Australia A side and figured in the Big Bash in his adopted country. Against Horsham in May he scored 130 off 113 balls with 15 fours and 3 sixes, last Saturday his 153 came off 177 balls with 15 fours and a six. He is familiar with English conditions, having won an Adam Gilchrist Cricket Development Scholarship and played for Weybridge and Surrey 2nd XI in 2010. In the absence of Michael Thornely and Craig Gallagher, getting 277 was

a stiff ask for Horsham, yet with Tom Clark batting impressively, they got off to a reasonable start, but when Haines, coming back from a concussion injury, went for 12, wickets began to fall regularly and at 110-6 there was only likely to be one winner. Mika Ekstrom and wicket keeper Michael Harms both scored 24, Ekstrom having limbered up with both a recent 80 and a 90 for the Horsham Thursday XI, but when Jonny Whiting was run out it was all over with

Roffey slip to second after disappointing draw Saturday July 21 – Sussex Premier League Preston Nomads 219 all out (58 overs) - Roffey 189-9 (52 overs) Match drawn – Roffey 13 points – Preston Nomads 12 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was an entertaining, competitive game, but Roffey conceded more runs than they had wished and were then obliged to hold out for a nervy draw in a match that they had hoped to win. Nomads won the toss, elected to bat and soon lost their prolific opener Dan Phillips, Stuart Whittingham going on to take three more wickets to finish with 4-58, including the dismissal of three of the first five batsmen. With Nomads on 94-5, Roffey were in the driving seat, until a partnership of 100 for the sixth wicket changed the context of the game, Hugo Shephard making 52 and evergreen Kashif Ibrahim top- scoring with 61 after almost losing his wicket first ball. Roffey’s fielding is normally safe and secure, but on this occasion it let them down, dropped catches and other lapses adding around 40 to the score. Nevertheless, after Alex Collins had wrapped up Nomads’ innings with three quick wickets, and Luke Barnard and George Flem-

ing had shared the other three, 220 did not appear too daunting in the excellent batting conditions, especially considering the exceptionally fast outfield. When Roffey replied, Ben Manenti soon departed, picking out the fielder behind square, but Theo Rivers and Jibran Khan got off to good starts, until both were out when well set, Rivers posting Roffey’s highest score (33) and Khan dancing down the wicket to get stumped for 23. Yet, at 115-3 Roffey were still well placed and Rohit Jagota and Captain Matt Davies were not greatly troubled until they both departed in their 20s, when, with 12 overs remaining to get 78 and the cream of Roffey’s batting back in the pavilion, victory suddenly looked unlikely, the problematic Will Collard finishing with 6-60. When Roffey number 11 Barnard joined Alex Collins 34 balls remained and 55 runs were required. Opening paceman Blair Tickner was brought back, but, despite his First Class experience in New Zealand he began with two juicy half volleys outside off stump, which Barnard, who had not batted for a year, drove impeccably to the boundary. The next ball sailed over his head and the last three balls of the over were all well off target, the old fashioned idea of bowling yorkers to tail enders having been abandoned. And, with the field

spread far and wide, the tactics were even more mystifying as Roffey had no realistic chance of getting the runs. With Nomads possessing the only opportunity to grab victory, fielders did eventually crowd the bat but, to their subsequent frustration, it was too late – Collins and Barnard successfully holding out for a draw after both sides had had winning windows, Matt Davies telling the District Post: “We fielded poorly and our shot selection wasn’t good, so we didn’t deserve to win.” Coach Simon Fearnley added: “We got out to soft dismissals and were unable to construct a partnership, allowing their leg spinner to bowl unchanged,” while Alex Collins said: “That was only the second time that I’ve batted this season – the first time was against Jofra Archer, which was even more of a test!” With just one win from their last five games, Roffey forfeit top spot to Brighton, who go four points clear with six games to play. On Saturday Roffey travel to seventh placed Cuckfield, then, on Sunday at Horsham Cricket Club in the ECB National Club Twenty20 Cup Area Finals, they play Surrey Cup holders Guildford at noon, followed by the winner taking on either Alton or Lordswood (Champions of Hampshire and Kent respectively) for a place in the Regional Finals

get out, Ludlow went LBW early on, but Whiteman was the glue of their innings – he just knocked it around and we paid the penalty for dropping him when he was on 92. It was a good run-scoring wicket as Tom Clark showed. We were heavily reliant on our top batsmen, but it didn’t work out for them today. Cuckfield had two good bowlers – Sussex’s Abi Sakande (2-59) and Josh Hayward (4-38), but the others weren’t as threatening, so it was a disappointing day for us.” On Saturday Horsham travel to beleaguered Ifield, currently bottom with 107 points, 19 behind Hastings. Horsham are now fifth on 224.
