Fond farewell to beloved Head May pearson
Reporter
Schools across Horsham District have marked the start of the Summer holidays by holding celebrations, but for one school, in Broadbridge Heath, this year’s celebration was bitter sweet. On Tuesday, staff, pupils (past and present) and parents gathered at The Shelley Arms, Broadbridge Heath, to bid a fond farewell to David Bird, beloved Head Teacher at Shelley Primary School. Mr Bird taught at Warnham County School and St. Wilfrid’s, Haywards Heath, before taking up his first head post at Shelley School, 14 years ago. In a final message that was sent to parents, he reflected on a 37 year teaching career that saw immense changes in education: “It is amazing to look back and consider that, when I started, there was no National Curriculum, no formal testing in primary schools and no Ofsted!” Colleagues expressed great sadness over Mr Bird’s decision to leave and, although looking forward to meeting the newly appointed head, admitted he has left big boots to fill. Senior Teacher, Stuart Coupe, said: “David’s leadership has been characterised by relentless hard work and a commitment to ensuring that all
children in his care receive the best possible education. All concerned with Shelley have benefited from his intelligent, thoughtful approach, his fair-mindedness and his delightful sense of humour. He has created a school where care and compassion are palpable aspects and as a consequence, the local community have always been keen to send their children to his school.” Mr Bird has left a remarkable impression on both pupils and parents. Marina Human, who has two daughters at the school, Mariana and Angelika (pictured with Mr Bird), told The District Post: “Mr Bird is one of the reasons why we chose Shelley Primary school for our two children. Without a doubt, he is one of the most approachable and inspirational head teachers you’d ever come across. My daughter has told me on many occasions about Mr.Bird’s motivational and educational speeches at the school assemblies. All kids simply adore him. “I was very surprised how he could remember every child’s name and he knew all the parents as well. Mr.Bird made all the parents feel very welcome at school and he was always there for us, ready to listen and help resolve any issues. He will surely be missed by many people. Wishing him a very happy retirement and lots of new adventures ahead.”

The District Post’s own Managing Director, Davey Pearson, faced ‘The Rack’ this week in response to an error that was made in last week’s issue. In the article, titled ‘The Nectar of The Gods’ which refers to the eagerly anticipated annual event The Loxwood Joust, it was written that the sweet alcoholic mediaeval beverage ‘Mead’ dated back to persian times. This, of course, as we all know, is incorrect. Mead dates all the way back to Babylonian times... And in true mediaeval fashion, the punishment for such an error was ‘The Rack’. Here are some true facts about mediaeval punishment: If you were found guilty as a man, you were hung, drawn and quartered; as a woman, you were burnt at the stake - as per the statue of treasons 1351. You could be accused of treason for several reasons, including forging currency or killing your husband. Only the king could remit the sentence, as an act or parliament. He would occasionally do this as a favour, if you had been loyal to him, were of noble birth or were a friend. This would then allow you to be beheaded instead. A ‘guilty’ plea was required for execution, but often those accused of treason would refuse to admit their guilt. If found guilty and of noble blood (perhaps a duke or similar) when you were executed,
your property would be claimed for the crown, leaving your family destitute. Torture would be used to get a plea of guilt, hence the use of the rack. There were many ways to torture a person in mediaeval England, but the most common was the rack. You could only be tortured by permission of the king or by someone with the king’s authority, such as the Lord Chancellor. The rack was vicious. As the wheels were turned slowly, so every part of your body was stretched and all of the joints and muscles were ripped apart. Rarely could anyone withstand the pain and it was common for those, that had been on the rack, to then be carried to be executed in a chair, as they were unable to walk or stand. It is a historical fact that there was a rack in the Tower of London. Pieces of the Rack were found in Georgian times and drawings of each piece were made. This has enabled them to re-create it and it is now on show at The Tower. Gilbert Savage, the Executioner, said: “This mediaeval character shows people in living detail the reality of the true history. The roles of Torturer and Executioner are ones that most people shy away from, but it was very much part of everyday life. A Torturer was sometimes known as a Tormentor instead.”
If you’re looking for a quintessential Village Fete, then head to Wisborough Green on Bank Holiday Monday, 28 August. The popular annual event, in the centre of this pretty village, attracts visitors from a wide area and is jam packed with fantastic games and activities for the whole family. The Fun Dog Show is always a hugely popular event, with classes ranging from the Best Veteran to Best Junior Handler. The show will be judged for the second year running by professional show judge and dog breeder, Sue Garner. For keen gardeners, the horticultural show tent is a must. A glorious celebration of the hard work, ingenuity (and competitiveness!) of enthusiastic local gardeners and cooks alike. There’s an opportunity for the whole family to join in traditional games and races; new this year, the ancient art of Wellie Wanging
has arrived in the village, so time to test your skills in this competitive, addictive fun game. Younger visitors can enjoy the delights of hook a duck, traditional swingboat rides, bouncy castles and face painting. After browsing the lovely stalls in the fete market, viewing the vintage vehicles or the ferret racing, try your luck at the tombola or high striker, and there’s no better way to relax than to grab some refreshments and listen to the perennially popular Worthing Silver Band, or tuneful newcomer, Dutch street organ, Matilda. Apart from being a wonderful, traditional family day out, the Wisborough Green fete has, over the last ten years, raised almost £30,000 for local charities and organisations. Event takes place on Monday 28 August, from 1pm at Wisborough Green.

Are you a good listener?
Local charity, West Sussex Mediation Service, has announced dates for a new training course for volunteer community mediators. The charity is keen to hear from individuals who are good listeners and communicators, and have some free volunteering time available for the good of their local communities. The proposed dates fall in October/November 2017. This training is provided free, in return for a commitment to volunteer. Mediators are independent third parties who help indi-

The training course will be interesting and fun and will involve a lot of role play, to practise the various types of scenarios the volunteers will be dealing with. Candidates will complete a portfolio to gain accreditation through the Open College Network. Ongoing training and supervision will be provided. Existing mediators with the charity, who always work in pairs, find the work very rewarding and many of them have been volunteering for many years. The charity’s longest serving mediator has volunteered there for 16 years. The skills acquired through this training can also be used at work and at home. One mediator commented after her training: “In the course of my work, I frequently take part in meetings and discussions about issues that can be contentious. My mediation training has given me the confidence to use my mediation skills to de-escalate situations and to encourage parties to come to mutually acceptable decisions”. Nick Handley, the Service Coordinator for the charity, said: “We are experiencing record numbers of referrals at present and to keep up with the workload, and service the whole of West Sussex, we need more good people, from various backgrounds, to help us function. Without our dedicated volunteers, we would not exist and West Sussex would be a poorer place as a result.” Further information can be obtained by contacting Nick Handley: 0300 200 0025 or by emailing: info@wsms.org.uk
Former air force sergeant celebrates 100th birthday
A Sussex woman, who worked in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War Two, has celebrated her 100th birthday at a Horsham care home. Margaret Waller was joined by staff and residents at Mill River Lodge care home, in celebration of her centenary, where she was given a cake and they sang songs
together. Her two sons, David and Keith, were also in attendance and organised for her to receive a telegram from the Queen. Born in the village of Hassocks, Margaret joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in 1939. During this time she met her husband, Alec, who was in the RAF. They both served during the war and
worked up to sergeant level. Alec later worked at the foreign office, and Margaret would regularly join him on his travels to countries such as Japan, Burma, Palestine and Italy. Even into her 80s, Margaret remained active with swimming, diving and visiting the gym. She moved into Mill River Lodge seven years ago, where she enjoys listening to music from her youth, with staff and other residents. Nadine Kearney, home manager at Mill River Lodge, which is operated by Shaw healthcare, said: “We had a great time marking Margaret’s birthday with her two sons and our other residents, who were happy to join in with the celebrations. “I don’t think anyone in our home is surprised that Margaret has reached this milestone, and it’s a testament to her positive and determined outlook on life. Despite her age she continues to keep us on our toes!” Shaw healthcare provides care for individuals in nursing and residential homes, hospitals, supported living environments and domiciliary care schemes. Its services range from comprehensive care packages through to low level support in the community, for older people and adults with physical, sensory or mental health support needs.

Sir Colin Davis Music Students celebrate Access Success! Scholarship Award Max Rosen, 14, has been awarded the Sir Colin Davis Music Scholarship at Christ’s Hospital. Ed Jones, Head of Academic Music at the School said: “Max, being a talented and committed musician who, like Colin Davis was at Christ’s Hospital, is a clarinettist. It will be exciting to watch Max’s progress over the next four years.” Max has shown huge commitment to his music since joining the School at age 11. He also plays the piano and has achieved grade 7 with distinction. He is a promising jazz pianist and is in the Chapel Choir, the marching Band and Big Band, as well as studying Music for GCSE. This prestigious scholarship was set up in memory of Colin Da-
vis, who was educated at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham, West Sussex and went on to gain a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. He became the president and longest serving principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Like so many former pupils who have experienced a lifechanging educational opportunity at the School, Colin Davis went on to inspire so many. The School’s scholarship programme recognises high achieving and talented individuals who excel in specific fields, for example, academic work, music, sport, art or drama, and who would benefit from financial assistance towards a first class education.
Successful Access students enjoyed their graduation at Collyer’s recently, receiving their certificates from Deputy Principal Steve Nicholls. Many of this year’s students are now moving on to degree courses, having achieved the qualification. The event follows hot on the heels of former student Annemieke Mumford’s success at the National Laser Access Awards, where she won the prize for Outstanding Commitment to Study, presented by Nic Dakin, MP. Collyer’s Access Coordinator and Tutor, Sally Kent, was thrilled: “We are delighted that Annemieke has been awarded this prize, which is thoroughly
deserved. She is just finishing her first year at Surrey, which is going really well, and she was kind enough to say that the Access course at Collyer’s had been fantastic preparation for university! “The statement for the prize focussed on Annemieke’s inspirational determination to overcome all obstacles to progress to a degree in mental Health Nursing. It added that she had been an inspiration to her tutors and fellow students. Annemieke will be an incredible nurse!” Access courses provide the necessary qualifications for entry to university degrees, and the college offers courses including Nursing and Healthcare Profes-
sions (including midwifery) and Health and Social Care Professions. After presenting the certificates at the Access Graduation, Deputy Principal Steve Nicholls, said: “In addition to their friends and families, all at Collyer’s are extremely proud of these students. They have demonstrated significant ability, juggled study with other significant commitments and worked really hard. Huge thanks to Sally Kent and the team for another excellent year!” Sally Kent added: “Well done to these talented students. I’m confident that they will all be a credit to any degree programme in the future.”

Hundreds of Super Heroes descend on Tilgate Park
Spider-Man, and his friends visited Tilgate Park on Saturday 22 July for local charity HomeStart CHAMS’ Super Hero Fun Run, on a special mission to be ‘Super Heroes to vulnerable local children’. At the event, Spider-man entertained the crowd and led a special Super Hero warm up, before setting off the 1.5km, or 500m Fun Run. More than 300 local heroes
joined him to race around the lake, as part of their mission to raise sponsorship for Home-Start CHAMS. Crawley Wellbeing, Tesco and Aldi were pleased to be able to support the event by sponsoring the goody bags for all the participants, which included fresh fruit and water to further encourage healthy living within the local community.
Each year, Home-Start CHAMS help hundreds of local children in families dealing with issues such as mental health, financial problems, or serious illness. Their trained volunteers work with families, helping parents to overcome these challenges and to give young children the best possible start in life. Aneliese Whittaker, Fundraising and Marketing Co-ordinator at Home-Start, said: “The event was a great success. We were so pleased to see all our local super heroes come out to support the event, despite the rain, and help us raise vital funds. Special thanks to all of our runners, volunteers and supporters- Spider-Man from Super Hero Parties, Tilgate Park, Crawley Wellbeing, Tilgate Parkrun, Aldi Crawley, Tesco Three Bridges, Whizzfit, GoApe Tilgate, Dave Kelly Carpentry, and Squirrel Girl. Without them, none of this would have been possible”. Following the run, children and families enjoyed the event village, which included bouncy castles, Spider-Man meet and greet, Glitter Tattoos, crepes and craft stalls. Children’s charity local appeal
A children’s charity is appealing to people across West Sussex to help them provide support to disabled children and young people. Barnardo’s is looking for people who have time, energy, patience and a love of children, who can help to provide specialist foster care and short break placements in West Sussex. The short breaks can be anything from occasional overnight stays, through to shared care and full time fostering. Children can be new born up to aged 18. Lisa Giles, Barnardo’s Children’s Services Manager said: “People cannot underestimate what a difference their help and support can make to these families. Children see it as a mini holiday and their parents have a much needed rest and opportunity to focus on siblings or other things. We are appealing to anyone who would like to find out more to get in touch.” Helen, originally from Shoreham, has been a short breaks
carer for 25 years. She said: “It makes me very happy to see how much enjoyment my young person gets from coming to stay with me. I have learnt what he likes and doesn’t like to do and make sure that fun and enjoyment are a top priority. It is also lovely to see the pleasure his parents get from see-

Magical transformation at the Springboard Project by Assurity Consulting!
Assurity Consulting, an independent workplace compliance consultancy based in Horsham, held a volunteer day at The Springboard Project on Monday 17 July. The company has always had a strong ethos in its corporate responsibility and supports a number of local charities - The Springboard Project being its longest standing charity partner, with an 11 year relationship. The Springboard Project is a community based charity that provides inclusive play and leisure opportunities, for families with young children, and fun short breaks for children and teenagers with disabilities. The most anticipated event is the annual volunteer day where, each year, a group of volunteers tidies the garden and outside areas, as well as designs and paints artwork inside or outside the centre. Children who visit Springboard House are said to “absolutely love their
outdoor space and garden.” “In 2007, Assurity Consulting created a ‘Springboard Junction’ mural on the garden walls near the railway play area; 10 years later, it was long overdue a refresh!” said a spokesperson: “The children are obsessed with Harry Potter and the charity had a dream to transform the outside area into the magical platform 9 and ¾.” On Monday 17 July, with a plan in place, a group of seven volunteers, from Assurity Consulting, worked tirelessly throughout the day gardening and painting artwork onto the outside walls. At the end of the day, the garden and play areas looked perfectly tamed and tidy, with their maze wonderfully shaped, after some persistent hedge trimming! The finished artwork looked “amazing”. The bold new colours made a great change to the original murals. Vickie Harvey, Service Deliv-
ery Manager at Springboard, was thrilled with the outcome. She commented: “I just wanted to say a massive thank you to all the Assurity Consulting team. The changes you have made to our centre are amazing and it means so much to have your support. I am very thankful that Assurity Consulting pick our charity every year for a volunteering day, especially as the artwork and much needed garden tidy ups are such a great standard. From everyone at Springboard, thanks again and we hope to see you at our 25th celebration.” After yet another thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, Assurity Consulting look forward to 2018 and their next challenge at this amazing charity! issues, from low mood and anxiety feelings to anger, confidence and relationship difficulties. The YES team currently sees around 200 new young people every month and, on average, less than 3% go on to require a referral to CAMHS. A 17-year-old from West Sussex said: “YES has changed the way I think and feel about things and helped me control my anxieties.” Dr Patience Okorie, NHS Crawley CCG Clinical Lead for children, families and young people, working in partnership with NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, said: “This service has really improved access to mental health and emotional wellbeing services for young people in our communities. Previously, there was a gap for those (who needed help now) with feelings like stress, anxiety or depression, but weren’t at the stage where they needed a referral to mental health services. YES is ideal for this.” Another new service, launched in July 2016, has seen more than 100 children and young people (aged 2 to 18 years old) access therapeutic support for sexual abuse. Provided

Extra specialist support, early preventative help and innovative new projects are all being used in West Sussex to assist children and young people with emotional wellbeing and mental health issues. An annual report, into commissioning for children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing, outlines a range of work being done to support all children and young people in the county. The Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Commissioners look after the specialist child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and also develop a wide range of other services on behalf of West Sussex County Council and three NHS clinical commissioning groups - Coastal West Sussex, Crawley and Horsham and Mid Sussex. The report, ‘Making progress, making a difference’, highlights that more than 2,250 young people (aged 11 to under 18) receive emotional support via the Youth Emotional Support Service (YES), which helps tackle emotional wellbeing
by Lifecentre, the service offers pre-trial therapy, face-to-face counselling for young people and their families and play therapy for younger children, supported by telephone and text helplines. Stephen Hillier, County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We know that poor self-esteem and confidence in childhood years often leads to poor health and wellbeing issues throughout adult life, which is why it is very reassuring to see such a range of support services on offer, from early support to enhanced access to innovative therapies. “I have a particular passion for the work done by Free Your Mind – an action group of 11-18 year olds who tackle the stigma around mental health. They have become a vital voice for all young people accessing services in West Sussex. I have also heard first-hand from users of YES and was so pleased when they explained how it had changed their lives.” Another success is in schools, as there is now an established network of named emotional wellbeing leads in every secondary school in the county and there are plans to expand this into primary schools. Dr Sue Torry, GP and Clinical Lead for mental health at NHS Coastal West Sussex CCG, said: “The YES service is a fantastic support for children and young people in West Sussex. “Before YES was launched, there was only limited help and support for young people with emotional needs who didn’t meet the criteria for mental health services, but now they can receive personalised support tailored to help them.” Young people who have questions about emotional wellbeing and mental health are encouraged to visit www.yourspacewestsussex.co.uk.
Local girl creates Wonderland at Borde Hill
Gabriella FitzGerald A Sussex based schoolgirl has added to the scene of fun and adventure for children at Borde Hill this Summer, by creating an Alice in Wonderland Trail. Sixteen year old Gabriella FitzGerald, who lives near Borde Hill, devised the Trail around the stunning Garden and wrote the riddles to be solved, as part of her work towards a silver level Duke of Edinburgh Award. Children can also enjoy spotting the artworks, dotted around the Garden as part
of the 2017 Sculpture Trail, such as Floating Feathers, A Herd of Deer, The Flute Player and Charismatic Owl, to give them the sense that they really are in Wonderland! Andrew John Stephenson Clarke, the fourth generation of Stephenson Clarkes to have lived at Borde Hill, said: “We are delighted by Gabriella’s hard work and the charming riddles and clues that she’s come up with, which we hope many others will enjoy.” The Alice in Wonderland Trail, which commenced on Saturday 22 July and will run throughout August, complements some of the other more specific activities on offer, such as a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Friday 11 August! Other activities include face painting on Monday 31 July, comedy and games on Tuesday 15 August and Tomfoolery on Wednesday 23 August. In addition, there are outdoor games on the lawn, to play with every day, including Giant Jenga and Badminton, and an Adven-
ture Playground featuring a zip wire, balance beams, swings and climbing frames. Dogs are welcome on leads, and visitors are welcome to bring a picnic, enjoy an ice cream from the shop, and visit Little Ritz Vintage Tea, who will be on hand throughout to serve refreshments. All activities and garden games are Free of charge (normal admission applies). Friends of Borde Hill come for Free. For more information please visit: www. bordehilll. co.uk/ events/

If they had a “best with beef” contest for wines the Gamay grape would win my personal vote. In a world awash with Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (all fine grapes) The Gamay seems a little harder to love. Maybe it is because of its bubblegum flavour association with gluggy Beaujolais Nouveau, but Gamay never seems to be taken seriously, if at all. Yet the grape can produce some great wines in what are known as the Beaujolais Crus range of wines. If you ever get the chance of visiting the rolling hills and small wine villages of Beaujolais please take it. It is a beautiful spot covering only about 15miles, north of Lyon. The Gamay is a cross between the famous Pinot Noir
that makes the stunning red Burgundies and the much lesser known white grape Gouais. The crossing makes it easier to grow than the notoriously difficult Pinot Noir. Almost all the wines in Beaujolais are red, and are from the Gamay grape. Amongst the Cru wines are some delightful names, such as the romantic St Amour and Moulin a Vent, the second being one of my favourite wines and named after its windmill. What unites the Beaujolais crus are lower tannins, though this does not mean that they cannot be substantial wines in their own right. And beef, being a more delicate meat than is generally recognised, is an excellent partner. I recently enjoyed a Moulin a Vent with “spag bol” but it also goes meltingly marvellously with rich casseroles and traditional roast boast and potatoes. The Beaujolais Crus vary in character, so you can get to try them all over the years. The terrific ten are St Amour, Moulin a Vent, Julienas, Chiroubles, Cote de Brouilly, Chénas, Fleurie, Morgon, Regnie, and Chenas. They are worth getting to know and a good producer to start with is Chateau Des Jacques or Louis Jadot. PJD

Children staying safe on social media Michelle Betts So the school holidays are upon us. A whole six weeks without school runs, homework, uniform washing and packed lunches. Inevitably, children will spend time on electronic devices over the holidays, with time on the internet recently becoming the top pastime for kids, overtaking TV for the first time. 4 out of 5 parents believe technology and gadgets are good for children but do you know what your kids are doing on their devices? The NSPCC have reported more than half of parents are unaware of the age limits for social media accounts and 1 in 5 parents don’t
know there are age limits in place for social media accounts. It’s believed over three quarters of all children under 13 have at least 1 social media account. A thought provoking statistic when the minimum age for Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Google+ and Pinterest is 13. Interestingly, the minimum age for WhatsApp is higher than this at age 16 and this app shares data with Facebook which now owns the app. You have to be 18 (or 13 with parental permission) to use Youtube. So how much are children posting on these social media apps? Well, kids between 11 and 16 post on platforms an average of 26 times a day (not much less than some professional Social Media Managers!). It’s important to ensure children are staying safe on these
networks. With location sharing, information passing between apps, apps accessing device’s microphones, cameras and photos, it is ever more vital to keep kids safe online. You hold their hand crossing the road, you make sure they put their seatbelt on in the car and safety on the internet is just another part of ensuring they are looked after properly. If you are at all concerned about social media networks or other internet issues, www.internetmatters.org is an invaluable resource. There’s advice on setting up children’s devices safely, how to talk about online safety and issues and dealing with cyberbullying. If you have kids asking you if they download or use particular apps then www.commonsensemedia. org allows you to enter the name of the app and gives an overview
together with age restrictions and reviews from children and adults. How much time are we spending on our screens? 70% of kids believe their parents spend too much on devices, whilst 6 out of 10 parents are worrying that children are glued to devices. Interestingly, Apple’s Steve Jobs didn’t let his children play on iPads. He was asked what his kids thought about the iPad and said “They haven’t used it. We limit how much technology our kids use at home.” Many leaders in the technology industry do the same, Chris Anderson, former editor of Wired magazine and co-founder of drone manufacturer 3D Robotics, applies strict rules to his children over devices and said: “That’s because we have seen the dangers of technology firsthand. I’ve seen it in myself, I don’t want to see that happen to my kids.” So how much screen time should children be allowed? Rather scarily, one Doctor who has studied this believes by the age of 7 the average child has had screen time for what amounts to watching continuously for a year. The American Academy of Paediatrics has said screens should be avoided for children under 18 months. From the ages 18 - 24 months any screen watching should be done with an adult present watching and discussing the content with them. Then for ages 2 - 5 years, just one hour watching good quality content should be allowed. If you are concerned about screen time and want to manage this with your kids, there is a
fantastic online planner you can complete with them to agree how screens will be used in your home. The planner is age sensitive and allows you to set up a contract agreeing no screen areas, times or curfews for screens and even looks at where screens will be charged or left overnight. You can access the interactive planner using this link: https://www.healthychildren. org/English/media/Pages/default. aspx#home There are also apps available to help you manage the amount of time children spend using their screens. You could try ScreenLimit, OurPact or ScreenTime as some examples but there are a number available and it’s a case of finding one that works for you and your kids. It’s also important to remember the blue light emitted by most screens can impact sleep, especially in children. Try to encourage them to stop using screens at least an hour before they go to bed and to turn the brightness down on devices in the evenings. The iPhone for example has a ‘night mode’ which reduces the blue light for this very purpose. Screens should also be removed from bedrooms at night to help relaxation and sleep, for adults as well as children! My top follows this month are based on keeping children safe online so please follow @NSPCC, @CommonSense, @IM_org (Internet Matters), @UK_SIC (UK Safer Internet), @childnet, @PBSKIDS and of course, @ByJoveMedia and @TheDistrictPost.

Dandelion Farewells hosts a really great British Brekkie
Business Lucy Pitts - Strood Copy Last week local funeral directors Dandelion Farewells handed over £477 to Horsham charity Winston’s Wish. The money was raised at a Great British Brekkie charity event on July 12th at the Milk Churn in Rudgwick and at various events throughout the last few months. Winston’s Wish is a nationwide charity with a Horsham branch that ‘Provides specialist child bereavement support services.’ The Great British Brekkie is part of a year long initiative by Winston’s Wish to help raise much needed funds. “Winston’s Wish provided incredible support to my daughter after she lost her Dad suddenly last year. We are so grateful to them for their care and support at such
a difficult time, it was important for us to support this event.” explained Kate, one of the event’s supporters. For their Great British Brekkie, Dandelion Farewells teamed up with The Milk Churn in their new parlour conservatory. They produced a fabulous breakfast including the Milk Churn’s signature dish, Sussex Charmer cheese on toast. Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses including Firebird Brewery and The Three Crowns pub in Wisborough Green, and flowers were donated by Lady Lissy Floristry. Dandelion Farewells is an award winning, independent funeral director, based in Wisborough Green. Winston’s Wish is their chosen charity. Over the last few months Dandelion Farewells have also been collecting for the
Horsham branch of the charity at a series of free My Wishes My Way community events. These events were designed to shed light on the different options you have after death and also the importance of planning your end of life. The breakfast event was attended by dozens of locals and last week Judith Dandy and Jo Parsons from visited Winston’s Wish to hand over a cheque for £477. On receiving the cheque, Gemma

Thursday 15th
The Hawth in Crawley will host a Family Open Day on August 5. Go behind the scenes on a backstage tour and discover parts of the theatre not usually open to the public. See the dressing rooms where the stars get ready for their shows and learn what it takes to put a show together. You may even have the chance to tread the boards yourself. There is an opportunity to sample some of the creative classes, which run throughout the year; try your hand at making a greeting card with Natalie O’Shea or create some artwork with Rachel Cowell from Ginger Moo. For something more energetic, you can have a go at some of the dance and exercise classes. Whether it is gentle Pilates or energetic Street Dance, there are classes to suit all abilities. It wouldn’t be The Hawth without having lots of entertainment. There’ll be performances from The Hawth Youth Theatre and Perform Classes, as well as Ballet, Tap and Street Dance demonstrations. There’s even a sneak preview of the summer youth production of Beauty and the Beast. Plenty of live music will be performed throughout the afternoon in the foyer, by a host of special guests and local talent, bringing a great mix of music, from pop to folk, jazz to blues, as
well as rock and roll. For the children, there will be fairground rides, story and singing sessions, led by Whirly Wiggles, and Baby Boogie sessions, with Busylizzy, guaranteeing bags of fun for even the youngest children. There will be celebrities to meet on the day: Actress and author, Susan Jameson, will be popping in to read from her bestselling book, Pony Tails, including a question and answer session, and Lauren Cocoracchio, who stars as Snow White in this year’s pantomime, will be on hand to say hello. Learn how to become a DJ (in the DJ Workshops) and mix some music, or how to become an expert filmmaker and learn about screenwriting, directing and camerawork. There really is something for everyone. Why not complete the day by purchasing tickets to see one of three productions? For families Big Wow Small Wonder will be in the Studio at 11am, The Emperor’s New Clothes in the Amphitheatre at 7pm or The Johnny Cash Roadshow in the Theatre at 7.30pm. Admission to the The Hawth Open Day is absolutely free. Tickets for performances are available from the Box Office on 01293 553636 or online hawth.co.uk

Rain or Shine – The Show Goes on – Horsham Garden Music Festival
Wet weather did not hinder the audience from turning out, for a superb weekend of entertainment, at the Horsham Garden Music Festival in the Human Nature Gardens of Horsham Park at the weekend. The community arrived on both days, showing true resilience, yielding ponchos, wellies, bivvies and brollies in every colour to dance and sing in the rain to the feel good music. Hepworths and B52’s provided the refreshments and Cafe Duvan nourished the thousands who attended over the 4 afternoons of music. The wonderful warm and cold offerings were welcomed by many. Saturday (22 July) took the audience back to the ‘80s, delivering a range of covers by David Bowie, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys and Guns n Roses - to name but a few. The nostalgic disco tunes had the audience up on their feet

dancing and swaying to the music. Stephen Foster started Saturday. Thereafter, Wesley Lucas, followed by the young talent of Christelle Lamb and Coda, a local six piece student band. The day ended on a high note with Back to School reminding the audience of a tremendous era of music. Rock was the theme for Sunday (23 July) and although it rained on-and-off throughout the afternoon, this did not dampen the spirits of those who attended and enjoyed the festival offerings. The day kicked off with locals, Squibs, who were followed by a young up and coming band, Man Alive, who performed covers and originals. Quo Caine and Full House returned and, once again, wowed the audience with their exceptional skills. The event closed with up and coming ICHIRO, who pleased crowds with flawless Rock covers and amazing originals get-
ting them singing, dancing and screaming for more. The oragisiners this year announced they were dlighted to be able to deliver opportunities for aspiring performers and local business alike, whilst involving the efforts of those facing challenges. A spokesperson commented: “Although the weather provided drama, the festival ran smoothly and sensationally and audience surveys proved the all round success of the event. “The team will very soon be planning another free festival for the summer of 2018, which also promises to be bursting with local talented musicians and performers. The promise is: diverse local and inclusive entertainment for the entire family. Watch the press and be sure to follow Horsham Garden Music Festival on Facebook to ensure you don’t miss future event postings!”

HAODS set to Perform at The Loxwood Joust G IN ! LL T SE FAS
ALAN PARKER’S
Play by Alan Parker Words and Music by Paul Williams
The Capitol Summer School presents BUGSY MALONE Friday 11 & Saturday 12 August 2.30pm & 7pm
The Loxwood Joust is delighted to announce that Horsham Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (HAODS) will be providing even more interest, entertainment and excitement to the mediaeval mayhem at this year’s festival with their band of strolling players. HAODS have been performing in Horsham for over 60 years and on the 5th, 6th and 12th and 13th August, they will for the first time be moving around the Loxwood Meadows. Carrying on the Loxwood Joust’s family focus, there will be something for all ages including extracts from Shakespeare, Chaucer and a little bit of Robin Hood. Keen for all to participate, HAODS will be inspiring and encourag-
ing Joust visitors to take part in a show, or maybe sing along to a bawdy drinking song. So if your talent has been hidden away, be ready to join in the fun! Maurice Bacon, Organiser of the Loxwood Joust said “We always do everything we can to include and work with local businesses. Having seen HAODS perform on several occasions, it was a natural fit to ask if they would like to provide some family fun and interaction at this year’s Joust and we are really looking forward to seeing another great performance.” The HOADS activities will take place at different points around the Loxwood Meadows and will include excerpts from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Canterbury Tales and Pyramus
and Thisbe, which will include assistance from passers-by! For the children there will be some Robin Hood and a performance from Dream, including a Maypole dance, which will all take place in the Children’s area. In addition, some pieces from Shakespeare’s various ‘Kings’ plays will also be performed here and there as they stroll around the Loxwood Meadows. So step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family! The Loxwood Joust is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood and has ample Free Parking.

HC riders won the overall team prize in March’s Oakwood Hill Open Time Trial, and, in April, 21 members savoured fantastic weather on the Winchester weekend, with an all day ride in the New Forest and an overnight stay in Sparsholt Agricultural College. In June there was a post ride lunch at Rookwood Golf Club ahead of July’s Dunwich Dynamo, when a party of serious HC cyclists joined around 2,000 others riding through the night from Hackney to Suffolk, HC
Chairman John Chaplin telling the District Post: “This is a big event, a 115 mile ride! A van ferried our group and their bikes up to east London, bringing us back from Dunwich the following day. Along the route people put out refreshment stalls and we arrived in time for a well-earned breakfast on the beach.” Also in July HC’s calendar includes the perennial Downhill Challenge at Dial Post, which, like the “have a go” time trial in May, (where participants try different bikes, from tandems to choppers), is a fun event for a variety of members. Racers revel in regular Time Trials, seeking to post a Personal Best, especially in September’s inter-club competition with both Dorking and Cranleigh Cycling Clubs and, later in that month, there is the Isle of Wight weekend when around 25 members, some of whom cycle there and back and have enjoyed all 12 of the previous visits, delight in three days of riding in outstanding settings. Then, in October there is HC’s Hill Climb contest, preceded earlier in the month by the weekend in Belgium’s Mouscron, where HC members go on trips with the local club. HC also stage Reliability Tri-
als, inviting nearby clubs to join members in tackling rides of differing lengths and time options. And, there are evening pub get-togethers throughout the year and a Christmas lunch when awards are presented. John Chaplin is again organising long monthly runs, this season’s theme being historic buildings, a recent ride taking him and a group on quieter roads to Windsor with a coffee break in Virginia Water and lunch after a ride in Windsor Great Park, John describing it as: “A day in the saddle without pressure.” He sums up HC saying: “What we’re really good at is running our range of Sunday rides for all cycling abilities. And, members now also arrange “pop up rides” – informal midweek or evening rides announced on Facebook, some are social rides including a pub stop, others are for more intense training!” Hard copies of HC’s own magazine – Chainline – can be found at Horsham’s Cycle Room shop, from where HC’s newly designed club kit can be obtained. Horsham Cycling welcomes new members and full details of activities can be found on the website – www.horshamcycling.co.uk
Southwater Junior Academy triumph in school cricket
Photos by Ian Ford Cricket – Horsham District Primary School Tournament Martin Read - Sports Reporter
The Horsham District Primary School Cricket Tournament was hosted by Kingslea School, where round robin matches were
played on two specially prepared pitches. And, Southwater’s Junior Academy sailed through the group stage, winning all of their matches through impressive batting and tight bowling. Greenway won two matches, but Kingslea A got the biggest score of the day – 162. In the final, consistent Southwater posted 148, Greenway just falling short after a promising start. Kingslea A took third place after overcoming the school’s B team. Horsham District Council Sports Development Officer Ian Ford told the District Post: “The tournament was designed for non-club players who had not represented their schools in other Sussex Cricket Foundation competitions. The matches were hard fought and, fittingly, the final was the match of the day, when Greenway pushed Southwater all the way, but couldn’t quite get the 13 required off the final over.”
“Horsham Sparrows u13 girls entered the RMA tournament on Saturday and with teams that included Crystal Palace, they knew they had to perform right from the first whistle. The girls first competitive game in over 2 months showed no signs of rustiness and resulted in a 2-0 win to Sparrows. This was followed by 3 draws and an unfortunate defeat to Palace that on another day could have brought a popular victory. For the last group game Sparrows just needed to
avoid defeat and a nervous draw ensured progress into the semi finals on goal difference by just 1 goal. The semi-final was another tough test against Rustington, finishing 2-2 after extra time. Sparrows came out the victors after it took 7 penalties to decide the finalist. The final proved one game too far for our girls with Billingshurst lifting the trophy but all the Sparrows players should be proud of their brilliant individual and team performances”.
Southwater storm through to another Gullick Cup win Tuesday July 25 – Gullick Cup Final Southwater 119-6 (20 overs) Nuthurst 61 All Out Southwater won by 58 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Returning to the Gullick Cup Final for the second year running Southwater pulled off a resounding victory, reprising their 1986 and 1987 triumphs and reversing their heavy defeat at the hands of Sussex Oak last year. On a beautiful evening following un-cricket-like weather on previous days, 1977 Gullick winners Nuthurst won the toss and elected to field. Southwater’s progress was steady rather than spectacular, Dan Humphries retiring under the competition rules with 32 not out and Paul Osborne clocking up 29 before being run out, but a run a ball target of 120 proved more than sufficient, although Southwater skipper Peter Osborne told the District Post: “We were hoping for 150, so we thought we were a
little short, but the outfield was damp, so our score was really worth around 135.” Replying, Nuthurst were soon in trouble and 29-6 off 6 overs deteriorated to 49-7 at the half way stage. There were hints of a revival, but that flattered to deceive as Nuthurst succumbed with just 61 on the board, their Captain Nick Scherliker saying: “We missed a couple of run outs, but we thought we could chase that down – they bowled well, though!” Peter Osborne adding: “In the field we got off to a dream start with a wicket off our first ball and then we held some great catches.” The well-supported, convivial Gullick Cup competition – which began in 1972 - is designed to give the opportunity to some non-regular cricketers to participate, and is played in that spirit. Presenting the cup, Horsham President Barry Peay paid tribute to Gullick organiser David Horsman and umpires Tom Hogsflesh and Hema Kumar along with praise for scorer Neil Chartres – and, especially, to Richard Marshall for another good pitch.

Rain plays havoc – but maintains the status quo Saturday July 22 - Sussex Premier League round up Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Rain ruined last Saturday’s Sussex Premier League programme, when only one of the five matches was completed (at Bexhill, where rain spreading from the west of the county did not arrive that far east in time to prevent Bexhill suffering another defeat, Brighton’s win moving them 79 points above their beleaguered opponent). The game at Horsham against Hastings was the only fixture to be abandoned without a ball bowled. The match of the day – top of the table Roffey against the current runners up at East Grinstead - was tantalisingly rained off when finely poised with the hosts on 127-3 off 35.2 overs - frustratingly, the home game between Roffey and East Grinstead in May was also abandoned. Middleton were 95-2 when rain prevented further play at Ansty and Preston Nomads looked unlucky to be cut off after they had travelled

to Cuckfield to reduce them to 96-7. The eight clubs involved in the abandoned games all received 10 points, so the leading placings are unchanged, Roffey remaining top a single point ahead of East Grinstead, with Cuckfield third and Horsham fourth, while Ansty are cut adrift at the bottom, 16 points behind fellow relegation candidate Bexhill. Tomorrow (Saturday) Roffey return home to entertain stricken Ansty whom they eliminated from the Sussex Cup and thrashed at their ground in the league. Ansty came into the Sussex Premier League for the first time this season and are yet to win a game having endured a series of heavy defeats. East Grinstead travel to seventh in the table Brighton, while Horsham go to Middleton (sixth). In May at Cricketfield Road Horsham chased down 289 to overcome Middleton in a 50 over league game, Will Beer making an unbeaten 142 and Mika Ekstrom taking 6-71. Horsham beat Middleton in the final of the Sussex Cup last season when they took the title at Hove.
Cottesmore’s Division 2 team through to semi-finals
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter With two Sussex Cup T20 semi finals scheduled, giving Horsham’s first team another opportunity to play in the final at Hove, potentially along with their second team, on Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August – or for Roffey to appear there for
the first time - conditions were difficult at Horsham Cricket Club last Sunday. Club Chairman Richard Marshall was at the ground at 7am to mop up after deluges the previous day, and with further rain threatened, an early start was made to the 2nd XI game, Horsham putting in Three Bridges. The visitors got off to a cracking start with a
century opening stand and looked likely to post a daunting target – until both well established batsmen were dismissed in quick succession, heralding a collapse, featuring four runs outs, John Aston taking 2-12 and Omkar Khot 2-17. Needing 149 for victory, Horsham reached 44-1, but then slumped to 68-7 before twenties from Sam Bell and Max McAteer raised hopes, only for Horsham to fall 33 runs short. In the much vaunted first XI semi final Roffey were asked to bat first and after the loss of an early wicket reached 98-3 off 12 overs, including major contributions from Matt Davies and Rohit Jagota. But, despite the best efforts of Richard Marshall and volunteers, prolonged heavy rain eventually resulted in abandonment of the game, which will be replayed either on Friday August 4 at 5.30pm or Sunday August 6 at 11.30, depending on the outcome of Horsham’s NatWest Club T20 area final appearance (see below). Horsham entertain Roffey in the Sussex Premier League on Saturday August 5, so a double header on consecutive days between the competitive near neighbours beckons. Meanwhile, as last season’s Sussex Cup winners, Horsham represent the county in the Area Final of the national NatWest Club T20 competition at Beckenham this Sunday, July 30, when they will play a Kent Cricket League XI, the winner taking on either the Surrey Championship XI or Hampshire’s Havant. In the event of bad weather, the reserve day is Sunday August 6. The eight winners from the 32 sides competing in the different Area Finals progress through to the four Regional Finals on Sunday August 13, the victors from which will qualify for National Finals Day at Derbyshire CCC HQ on Monday September 11.
Roffey’s Stuart Whittingham dismisses England’s Trescothick
In a great performance, Cottesmore’s Division 2 team, captained by Viv Lyons, beat Copthorne in the Sussex County Inter Club Quarterfinals at Ifield last week. The team of Linda Adamson, Irene Matheson, Christine Knight, Brenda Williams, Jill Lewis, Linda Atkins and Angela Whittington won the necessary 4 matches to take the tie with two matches called in. The matches were closely followed by a number of supporters from the club and all are now looking forward to the Semi Finals on 9th August at Seaford (Blatchington) where they will play Royal Ashdown Forest. In other club news, in the July Medal, the Silver Division honours went to Irene Matheson with a net 76 and Bronze to Catherine Malins with a net 78. A closely contested 9-hole qualifier (Summer Aggregate) went to Sheila Aldridge on count back from Karen Stafford, both with 17 points. The Rosina Smith Trophy produced some good scoring but on count back, Lady Captain, Margaret
Swatman, just nosed ahead of Liz Baguley to take the trophy, both scoring 41 points. Liz received a well-deserved handicap cut from 35 to 33. On July 12th, the Ladies’ Section hosted a successful Ladies’ Open Competition with thirteen teams of ladies from clubs across Sussex, Surrey and beyond taking part. Fortunately, heavy overnight rain had stopped and although blustery, all the visitors enjoyed the course, the halfway house supplied by the Ladies’ Section and a buffet lunch. The competition was won by ladies from Slinfold and General Manager, Johnny Porter, kindly presented the prizes complimenting the Section on the event. Lady Captain, Margaret Swatman, remarked, ‘It takes the hard work and support of many people to run such a day and my thanks go to all who helped with the planning, with baking or on the day. The ladies playing also donated £165 to my charity, Canine Partners, through the ball sweep and sale of merchandise.’

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In last week’s Sussex 2nd match versus Somerset at Horsham, Roffey fast bowler Stuart Whittingham, a Sussex contracted player, opened the attack for the county against the legendary Marcus Trescothick.
Still a major batsman for Somerset after over 200 matches for England in all formats, Trescothick did not disappoint at Horsham, scoring 89 out of 173 in Somerset’s first innings and 162 out of their 294-8 in the second. However, Stuart, who has also played for Horsham – and first represented Sussex at U10 level –
was delighted to grab the prized scalp of Trescothick in Somerset’s first dig amid an excellent 6-66 return, and then caught the maestro in their second knock. In some 830 county and international appearances spanning 25 seasons Trescothick has amassed around 40,000 runs.
