Horsham District Council buys The Forum for £15m May pearson
Reporter
On Tuesday (August 1) it was announced that The Forum, Horsham Town Centre, had been bought by Horsham District Council. This gives the council control of a key strategic site in the town centre, directly between Sainsbury’s food store and West Street. The £15m investment is in a total of 76,625 sq ft of accommodation currently let to four tenants: Dunelm, TK Maxx, Blacks and Benson for Beds. As part of the deal, the council will also acquire ownership of the 472 space Blackhorse Way car park, for which it currently pays rent. The Forum investment will be added to the council’s existing commercial property portfolio, which has over the years helped fund council services and currently includes assets that generate £3.1m of income per year. It is expected that the new purchase will further boost that income to support the cost of providing services, such as waste and recycling, which alone costs just under £3 million a year to provide.
It also helps ensure that money will continue to be available for other services the district council provides, such as housing, parks & countryside, planning, environmental services and leisure activities, including swimming pools and leisure centres. Councillors gave the go-ahead to purchase the site, from clients of Aviva Investors at a Council meeting on 5 July, but the matter could not be made public for commercial confidentiality reasons until legal completion on Monday 31 July, 2017. The purchase will: provide a longer term strategic opportunity to improve the link between Sainsbury’s car park and West Street and to develop the Forum Piazza; unlock a disadvantageous lease on the car park, and give the council freedom to change or redevelop the car park in the future if necessary, and deliver an additional annual income stream of £780,000. A supplementary capital budget of £15m has been approved by Council, which will be funded through a range of sources including cash and borrowing. Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets, Brian Donnelly, said: “As funding for councils from central Government entirely disappears, this is both about investing to

make money – money to increase future income to support our council services – and about supporting our long held policy of council investment within our district. This acquisition gives us control over a major strategic site, one that is a big part of the council’s vision for the town centre.” Leader of the Council, Ray Dawe, said: “This is one of the most exciting property acquisitions,
that the council has made, in that it opens up strategic opportunities for Horsham town. This acquisition will increase our income stream significantly, whilst allowing us to benefit from any potential capital growth in the future. “Retail is strong in Horsham, and we benefit from having one of the lowest levels of empty shops in the country. ers are investing in the town, which is great news as Horsham continues to grow and as we see an increased population using the town centre shops. West Sussex County Councillor Peter Catchpole has taken the decision to step down from his position as Lead Cabinet Member for Health and Deputy Leader. The decision was taken for personal reasons. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “I am immensely sorry to lose Peter in both roles. Since joining the Cabinet under the previous leader in 2009, Peter has been an exceptional Cabinet Member and, through his stewardship, the service has gone from strength to strength. He has my thanks for how he steered the service through the implementation of the Social Care Act, particularly support for carers, and his determination to ensure that Meals on Wheels remained available for our elderly and vulnerable in West Sussex. He leaves an excellent legacy.” Future arrangements will be announced in due course. Mr Catchpole remains as local county councillor for Holbrook.

What to do if your child has a head injury? NHS issues new advice for looking after children and young people with head injuries Updated advice has been issued for parents and carers of children and young people who sustain a head injury. NHS Crawley and NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), working in partnership with West Sussex County Council, have published updated information, following a national review of guidance for head injuries by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence). Dr Patience Okorie, local GP and NHS Crawley CCG clinical lead for children and young people working in partnership with Horsham and Mid Sussex leads for children’s services in the town, said: “The leaflet advises parents and other carers on how best to care for a child who has a bump or injury to the head. It divides the advice in three easy sections, ranging from green to red, depending on the severity of the injury and symptoms. Most children can be managed according to the ‘green’ guidance, especially if they are alert and interacting with you. We hope this guidance leaflet will help children to get the best care possible
and support carers to do the right thing - whether that is caring for the child at home or after discharge from hospital. “The new advice gives guidance on when a child may need to go to their GP, or seek urgent care. But it also highlights when patients can been seen closer to home at the Minor Injuries Units in Horsham or East Grinstead (at Queen Victoria Hospital) or the Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre - and gives a full list of local NHS services and contact details. We want to ensure children get the best care after an injury – however slight or severe – but we also know how important it is to support parents and carers so they know the right steps to take in an emergency, but also know when not to worry unduly.” To view the updated advice, please visit: http://www.horshamandmidsussexccg.nhs. uk/your-health/childrenshealth/ , http://www.crawleyccg.nhs.uk/your-health/childrens-health/ or hard copies can be obtained by emailing: HMSCCG.Contactus-horshamandmidsussexccg@nhs.net / CCCG.Contactus-crawleyccg@ nhs.net or phoning the CCG on: 01293 600300 ext 4255

Early Years Achievement recognised at Collyer’s
Collyer’s students who have been studying EYE (Early Years Education) at level 2 and 3 have enjoyed a graduation ceremony at the college, recognising their significant achievements over the past year. Hosted by EYE Subject Leader Debbie Mollart, the students received certificates from Collyer’s Vice Principal, Melanie Russell, and afterwards enjoyed some delicious cake baked by the ‘Juby Lee Bakes’ company. Early Years teacher, Rebecca
Adams, said: “The EYE graduation is great opportunity to celebrate success. I’m really proud of all of our students, as they have achieved so much this year – they are superstars!” Head of Early Years, and Head of Hurst House, Debbie Mollart, added: “Congratulations to all of these talented and hard-working young people. Many of these students are continuing to EYE level 3 here at Collyer’s, moving straight into child care careers or taking places
on Higher Education courses. I wish them all the very best of luck and I can speak for all of their teachers when I say that the students leaving will be sorely missed by us all.” Collyer’s Vice Principal, Melanie Russell was extremely proud: “These are incredibly tough courses to pass, as they test academic skills and the ability to be effective in the workplace. We are lucky to have an outstanding department for Early Years Education and these talented students and their teachers have worked really hard to be successful over the past year. “Congratulations everyone, and that includes the Juby Lee cakes company, whose creations were ludicrously tasty and enjoyed by all at the graduation ceremony!” Early Years Level 3 graduates and their teachers (left to right) Back row: Debbie Mollart, Saydee Redman, Lily Parsons; Carol Stalley, Emma Webb, Brooke Harrod; Jay Hooper, Katie Bonner, Lilly Stamp, Michelle Thorpe and Rebecca Adams; Middle row: Holly Armstrong, Melanie Russell, Emily Ede, Serena Armstrong and Georgia Brummel; Front row: Anya Brant, Emma Baker, Livvy Tidd; Chloe Lawrance, Rebecca Imrie and Leanne Penn.

Smartphone asthmatics invited to take part in new digital health pilot People with asthma are being invited to take part in a pilot scheme for a new digital health project aimed at reducing their risk of having an asthma attack. During the last academic year, pupils in Year 10 at Millais School in Horsham have been running their own Young Enterprise company, Bonsai, and chose to support their local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House. After initial discussions, Bonsai decided to produce and sell a range of hand-decorated mugs and other items. In addition to producing a business plan, deciding on the product range and selling within the school and to the public, the pupils had to complete a final company report and accounts in order to compete in the Area Finals against other schools for the Best Area Com-
pany Award. The participants described it as “a challenging experience, with deadlines and targets to meet, just as real companies have to achieve.” The final task was to organise an Annual General Meeting, where share capital and a dividend was returned to shareholders, who agreed to donate 50% of their dividend to Chestnut Tree House – the children’s hospice for East Sussex, West Sussex, Brighton and Hove and South East Hampshire, who care for and support local children and young people with life-shortening conditions. The total donation to the charity was £103. Jayne Todd, Community

Fundraiser at Chestnut Tree House, said: “We would like to congratulate Bonsai for doing such a good job and overcoming the problems they encountered, along the way, to achieve a return for their shareholders. “It’s always great to see young people engage with charities, and it was very generous of the Millais School pupils and shareholders to donate half of their dividend to Chestnut Tree House. The money they raised will enable three children to experience a magical hour in our multisensory room with a speciallytrained member of staff. Thank you to everyone involved.”

Talent shines through at golden ceremony
A special celebration has been held to applaud the select few
West Sussex young people awarded The Duke of Edin-
burgh’s Gold Award in 2017. More than 10,000 young people in West Sussex currently take part in the award scheme and just one percent of these achieved the prestigious Gold Award this year. Rose Cumber was one of the 70 award recipients who gathered, at Worth Abbey last month, to receive her certificate from Lady Emma Barnard, High Sherriff of West Sussex. The 19-year-old from Farlington School, Horsham, said: “I attended the West Sussex Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s awards ceremony and I was also honoured to give a short presentation on my time volunteering in Africa. “It was great to see old school friends and collect our awards together and reminisce on our time
and experiences during the gold expeditions. It was such a lovely afternoon in a beautiful setting.” Supported by West Sussex County Council’s Young People’s Service, there are more than 60 centres delivering The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) in West Sussex including schools, colleges, special schools, Open Award Centres and independent organisations. Stephen Hillier, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “To achieve the DofE Gold Award, each individual has had to go through a series of complex challenges, aimed at developing skills which will assist with whichever career path they end up choosing. These sections include volunteering, physical, skills and

Horsham biologist calls for ‘unified approach to island conservation’ The UK government must provide increased leadership and a strong, unified approach to island conservation. This is according to Joshua Powell, who has recently returned from travelling for eight weeks in New Zealand, Fiji and Australia, investigating best practice in the conservation of species diversity on island systems. Joshua’s travels were enabled by a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travelling Fellowship Award. Joshua, a Conservation Biologist and Geographer from Horsham, wanted to use his Fellowship to observe some of the world’s best examples of island conservation. In New Zealand, an entire government department is dedicated to conservation, and the issue ofSuzanne conservation Travers is prominent among the public. Joshua Marketing Manager argues that it is critical for the UK, as an island nation, to learn from countries such as New Zealand, particularly with regards to the UK’s offshore islands. During his Fellowship, Joshua met with a range of practitioners and policymakers, from members of ministerial offices to local field staff, in order to build a full picture of the state of island conserva-

I wish them all the very best for their future endeavours.” Patrick Burgess OBE, Deputy Lieutenant and Chairman of the West Sussex DofE County Committee, said: “The High Sheriff was genuinely delighted, and so was I. More importantly, so were the award winners and their families.” For information on how to get involved in DofE in West Sussex, please contact: d.of.e.award. youth@westsussex.gov.uk or visit the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award website: www.dofe.org.
tion in each location he visited. He involved himself in many of the most topical conservation conversations in the region, including Tasmania’s bold plan to save the Tasmanian Devil through a program of eradication of diseased individuals and translocation of healthy individuals, and Fiji’s presidency of the UN Oceans Conference. “My Fellowship has opened a new window for me into the work of our partners in the South Pacific – and what tremendous work they are doing at that! The level of ambition for island conservation in the region, particularly in New Zealand, is exemplary and there are crucial lessons there for the UK” said Joshua. Now back in the UK, Joshua has begun writing a report on the learning from his Fellowship, which will be entitled Island Conservation for an Island Nation. He will also be speaking to the RSPB’s Overseas Territories team about his findings. In October, he will be setting off for the South Atlantic to meet with conservationists on the British Overseas Territories there, where he will learn about the conservation challenges they face and share insights from his time in New Zealand, Fiji and Australia.

The School is in excellent shape for Simon Reid, when he begins his headship in the new academic year.” During John’s leadership, the School has remained predominantly a boarding school for children from a diverse range of backgrounds, however, the need to embrace the local community was recognised and day pupils are now welcome. The number of boarders has also increased and the School has taken a step into the international arena, widening the cultural diversity of the pupil population. The campus is also buzzing during the holidays with international schools, providing a welcome boost to the School’s income and the local economy. John Franklin will be retiring this summer, following ten years as Head Master of Christ’s Hospital. Events to mark John’s final year included a royal farewell lunch with the President of Christ’s Hospital, HRH The Duke of Gloucester. John said: “We are always delighted to welcome HRH The Duke of Gloucester to Christ’s Hospital and I feel particularly privileged that HRH was able to visit the School during my final term.” Having seen tough economic times, John has taken steps to ensure he leaves the School on a strong financial footing, continuing to lead the way in independent education by providing substantial bursaries to three-quarters of its pupils. Both John and his wife, Kim, have made their mark on the School and, as Guy Perricone, Treasurer of CH commented: “CH has, in every respect, made
Hospital’s endowment and the cost of running the School, supporting pupils who would not otherwise have the benefit of a life-changing educational opportunity. John Franklin has overseen substantial improvements to the Grade II* listed buildings and ensured high quality teaching resources, particularly for science, languages, design and technology, careers and sports training. Exciting development plans are underway for a new catering block to replace the kitchen. He has also been responsible for introducing the highly successful IB Diploma, alongside the A level course, for sixth form pupils and for upholding a strong pattern of excellent examination results. Additionally, co-curricular and pastoral initiatives have been implemented, including the introduction of a new tutorial programme. John Franklin commented: “It has been a real privilege for Kim and I to be members of the CH community for the past decade and to play a modest part in its positive transformation. On Thursday 13 July, 700 students, proud parents and esteemed guests from the community, gathered to celebrate another outstanding year at The Weald School’s annual Gold Awards ceremony. Students at The Weald excel in a wide range of skills throughout the year and this annual event recognises exceptional successes for effort, progress, and wider contribution to the school - something the recipients should feel very proud of. Guests were welcomed by buskers and student helpers in front reception, who then directed them to the reception in the School Hall. During the recep-
tion, guests could mingle, enjoy refreshments and observe art work produced by talented Weald students, while equally talented students provided live musical entertainment. Guest speaker, Joe Cummiskey, added a motivational and energetic address, which echoed the school’s ethos of positive commitment and engagement. It was clear that Joe made a difference to all in the room. A large number of students left inspired, not only by their magnificent achievements, but by Joe’s infectious ‘can-do, believe in yourself’ attitude. Joe Cummiskey is the Founder/ Director of the organisation ‘Uganda Hands for Hope’, which
supports vulnerable children and their families living in Uganda. Joe and his team provide support to over 350 children and their families in education, health and social care. Their mission is to alleviate extreme poverty and facilitate lasting change in the lives of the most vulnerable children and families living in urban slums in Uganda. Joe inspired Weald students during his speech by saying: ‘you are only given one life, so follow the path that makes you happy’, and then went on to congratulate students on their achievements. All who attended left the evening on a high and felt proud to be part of The Weald community.

Care home summer party helps Connor Saunders Foundation Saunders, who tragically died in 2012 on a night out with friends. After his death, Connor saved the lives of five other people, through organ donation, and the Foundation strives to continue his legacy of life-saving, by promoting organ donation and providing first aid training and heart defibrillators to schools and football clubs. The charity also aims to provide qualified football coaching for people with physical or learning disabilities. Connor’s mother, Darran Saunders, his Nana and his uncle attended the event, to join in the celebrations and see Helen complete her challenge in aid of their Foundation. All money raised from the raffle at the event was also donated to the Connor Saunders Foundation. This helped to raise more than £500. On completion of her challenge, Helen On Saturday 22, July staff and residents at Westlake House Care Home in Horsham were joined by others from the community for their summer party and charity fundraiser, which saw more than £500 raised for the Connor Saunders Foundation. The event was great fun and guests enjoyed live musical entertainment, as well as delicious
home-cooked food served up by the home’s talented Head Chef. For many, the highlight of the afternoon was when a brave member of staff, Clinical Development Nurse, Helen Rooke, shaved her head in a bid to gain donations for the Connor Saunders Foundation. The Connor Saunders Foundation is a small charity set up in memory of 19 year old Connor
Slinfold Primary School Creates Heraldry Flags for Loxwood Joust Pupils in years 5 and 6 at Slinfold Primary School had great fun researching and creating Heraldry Flags to be hung at the Loxwood Joust’s Field of Flags. Working from some great information supplied by the Joust’s organisers, they really enjoyed seeing how the different charges represented different meanings, before spending time designing their flags so that they were personal to them. In mediaeval times common charges were depictions of common well known objects and the choice of these charges would often be related to a person’s occupation, position, family history, family belief or character. Mrs Salter Head of Year 6 said “The children worked really well in teams to create each flag. It was especially good to see them so excited and interested in the heraldry symbols and eager to investigate further, so as to ensure that each flag reflected the
subjects they wished to portray. This has been a great end of term activity for them and one that they have so enjoyed doing, we would certainly do it again next year” Animals were some of the most used symbols with snakes depicting wisdom, dragons showing as a defender of treasure and lions representing courage, whilst other symbols such as a boat was used to show travel or expeditions by sea. The Loxwood Joust takes place from 10am to 6pm on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th August. It is the UK’s premiere mediaeval fun day out, taking place at the enchanted Loxwood Meadow. So step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family! commented: “I decided to do a head shave after talking to my hairdresser about all the amazing work the Connor Saunders Foundation does in memory of Connor. I’m delighted we were able to raise so much money for this fantastic cause. Thank you so much to everyone who donated.” Liz Higson, General Manager at Westlake House, said: “Everyone always looks forward to Westlake’s summer party and this year was extra special. Thank you to Connor Saunders’ wonderful family, who joined us for the day, and all our guests who came along to enjoy the day’s entertainment and support Helen as she shaved most of her hair off!” Westlake House Care Home is run by Barchester Healthcare and provides nursing and residential care services.

A team from Billingshurst marketing agency, PMW Communications, recently drove 1,800 miles across Europe, as part of the Keyline Rally, and raised over £2,500 for Prostate Cancer UK. PMW’s Managing Director, Peter Sutton, and Finance Director, Peter Burton, completed the rally

in an old Daimler. To fit in with the Sci-Fi theme of the challenge, the car received the PMW creative treatment and was decorated to look like the DeLorean from the Back to the Future films. Setting off from Portsmouth on Tuesday 27 June, the team drove through Santander in Spain, Andorra and the Pyrenees, before
arriving in Le Mans in Northern France on Saturday 1 July. A celebratory fancy dress party then took place, with the two Peters dressed as Back to the Future characters, Marty McFly and Doc Brown. Peter Sutton commented: “There were 18 teams taking part in the challenge and the total amount raised for Prostate Cancer UK will be close to a fantastic £100,000. We had a little bit of trouble with the car, but that just added to the fun of the rally, and everyone that took part really got into the spirit of the event. A huge thank you to everyone that donated. “The rally was organised by Keyline, who are one of our clients, so we were delighted to support them and help raise a fantastic amount of money for Prostate Cancer UK. Next year, the aim is to push through the £1m mark, in a special rally that will visit Monaco, and PMW will definitely be there taking part.” Donations can still be made to the PMW team’s Keyline Rally challenge by visiting: www.justgiving.co.uk/PMWKeylineRally. The money raised will be used to help Prostate Cancer UK continue ground-breaking research into saving lives.

she shows little interest in the resort activities, and instead discovers her own entertainment, when she stumbles across an all-night dance party at the staff quarters. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves and the pounding rhythms, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle, the resort dance instructor. Her life is about to change forever, as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady, both on-stage and off, and two fiercely independent young spirits, from different worlds, come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their
lives. The show also features all the hit songs from the film, ‘Hungry Eyes’, ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the heart stopping ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’. Holiday fun with the Sussex Wildlife Trust in Horsham
The summer holidays are finally here, but there’s still time for children to get involved with some fabulous wildlife themed activities. The Summer Holiday Club
at Chesworth Farm, Horsham, began this week and will run again on Wednesday 9 and Wednesday 23 August, between 10am and 3pm. Tamara Jewell, Community Project Officer at the
Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “I will be running days in Horsham during August, all with different themes. The children will be able to let their imaginations run wild, as they explore the natural world, develop bush craft skills and spend time at the camp site, practising safe fire lighting under the supervision of our trained staff and volunteers. I have noticed that blackberries are ripening fast this year, so these will be perfect for picking and making juicy paints to decorate flags with in our first session.” Summer Holiday Club is suitable for children aged 6-11 years. Parents/carers do not accompany children. Cost per child is £21 per day for non-members (£15 per day for Sussex Wildlife Trust family members). Online booking is essential. EMMY nominated Mediaeval Baebes to perform live at the Loxwood Joust
The Mediaeval Baebes, who have been performing at the Loxwood Joust from its very first year and will be performing there again later this week, have been nominated for two 2017 Emmys. These prestigious Emmy Awards are the American award that recognizes excellence in the television industry, and corresponds to the Oscar for film, the Tony Award for theatre, and the Grammy Award for music. The Mediaeval Baebes provide the theme song for the renowned ITV series Victoria and they will also be shown performing in series 2 which is due to be aired in the Autumn. These coveted nominations were given for the Outstanding Music Composition for a Series and Original Main Title Theme
Music, which was composed by Martin Phipps. The Mediaeval Baebes have always enchanted the audiences at the Loxwood Joust with their unique take on early music, traditional culture and the magic of folklore. Many of their lyrics are from mediaeval texts and they set them to original scores using mediaeval and classical instruments. You can hear them once again as they sing in an impressive array of long forgotten languages and perform at this year’s Loxwood Joust on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th August. And for an additional treat, the Mediaeval Baebes will also be performing on Friday 8th December, at St Mary’s Church Horsham as part of their Christmas Carol Tour.

Neil Moore, MD at GL & Co Estate Agents, suggests a new way of thinking when it comes to selling property. Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, thinks that we overestimate the amount of change which will happen over two years but underestimate the amount of change over ten. This certainly seems to be the case with housing. Our tastes move on hugely over a decade as new materials, technology, design, our experiences of staying in modern hotels and even watching reality home shows on the television increasingly influence us. Public opinion and governmental policy also have their effect. The Grenfell Tower disaster will prove to be another turning point. But underlying all these developments are the changes we see in our own lives; the amount of space we need to occupy, running costs, convenience and the time that could be spent doing other things - sometimes at stages in life like parenthood or retirement when time is increasingly precious. Retirees for example have much to consider. Do they want to continue living in large family houses when there is no large family living there anymore? And the desire to head off to the country or coast, once the dream of many, is being overtaken by the desire to live in an exciting urban environment where there is life, opportunity, convenience and grandchildren. Growing old gracefully is no longer an appealing prospect to many. In the new homes sector this is a big challenge. Few of us live or want to live in the same way we used to. Developers must work out how people will want to live tomorrow and then create
that model today. For some this might seem courageous speculation, but that doesn’t make it wrong. In the pre-owned home sector there are different challenges. We are beginning to see a real trend in adapting dated, multizone living spaces that segregate people within the home into larger more inclusive multifunctional areas. Eating, dining, entertaining and relaxing with family and friends are now desired in one large single-function area where the bi-fold door finally brings nature indoors and makes the garden an integral part of the house. Therefore buying a home has become akin to trading in an old car for a brand new one. When most people buy a new car today they expect plenty of innovative features, not the same outdated ones their old car possessed. A new car is a finely engineered and brilliantly designed machine for driving. Buyers of all ages now think that a home should be a finely engineered and brilliant machine for living. Those who seek to leave their old homes behind and look forward to enjoying all the benefits that the next one should offer might spare a thought for the people they want to sell to. Don’t these buyers crave modern styles and fittings also? Home sellers should remember that and either make their home attractive to the modern buyer or accept that the price will have to reflect essential modernisation works. After all, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. To discuss the current West Sussex property market, please call Neil Moore at GL & Co Estate Agents on 01903 742354 or email neilmoore@glproperty.co.uk

Horsham RFC eager to savour their exceptional new facilities Horsham Rugby news Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Major improvements at Horsham Rugby Club are reaching fruition with outstanding innovations off the field. The new, extensive changing room complex is about to be opened and an Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) – the first in Sussex – is being installed under the auspices of the RFU alongside the existing First XV playing area. The AGP will provide an enduring, consistently excellent surface for playing rugby, training and development of the game, supplementing the excellent existing arrangements. State of the art AGPs, developed following extensive research, comprise a long pile tufted carpet with rubber infill providing a cushioned surface. New AGPs fully meet all of the exacting requirements and standards of the RFU and
replicate the very best quality natural turf pitches. Horsham Rugby Club’s Richard Ordidge told the District Post: “Our new facilities will soon be the envy of the league and we’re looking forward to a very exciting year ahead – no visiting team will relish the thought of playing us on our AGP in front of our home crowd!” Last season was a transitional

one for Horsham with some very talented young players finding their feet in the tough London 2 South East League, culminating in late May with the 1st XV winning the Bob Rogers Cup for the fourth consecutive year. A preview of the new season – which starts on September 9, when Horsham entertain their old Sussex rival Haywards Heath – will appear in your District Post. Meanwhile, Richard Ordidge says: “We’ve got two mid season friendlies, away to Reading on August 19 and then at home to Old Reigatians on September 2, where, on the same day, our Lions open their Sussex Cup campaign against Uckfield. We’re always looking forward to welcoming new players to the fold, no matter what the level, so we’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to share in the enjoyment of what we have to offer.”
Billingshurst Bowls Roundup Bowls K Barraclough - Billingshurst BC
Friendly match between Billingshurst and Graffham played at Graffham BC on Thursday 27 July 2017 Result: Billingshurst - 31 Graffham - 56 Billingshurst travelled to Graffham for an evening friendly intent on revenge for losing the home fixture earlier in the season. The hosts had other ideas and keen to do the “double” set about the visitors with gusto.
As a consequence ‘Hurst found themselves 10 adrift after 9 of the allotted 18 ends. The second half brought no relief for the visitors with Billingshurst eventually losing by 25 shots and on all rinks. Marion Clark, Barry Gilbert & Alan Knight Lost: 10-19 Roger Moore, Robert Dakyn & Anita Colliety Lost: 13-18 Ken Peters, Chris Laker & Alan Readshaw Lost: 8-19 Annual Challenge Match - Billingshurst Captain (Barry Gilbert) versus Vice-Captain (Alan Knight) played at Billingshurst
BC on Sunday 30 July 2017. Result: Captain’s Team - 58 Vice-Captain’s - 62 Friendly rivalry was the order of the day for this annual challenge match. Alan’s team raced ahead and, aided by a 6 and pairs of 5’s & 4’s, were 16 shots ahead at the half way stage. The second half saw the Captains team fight back with a “Hot Shot” count of 9 plus a 6 and a 5. Unfortunately for them the deficit could not be erased completely thus enabling the Vice-Captain’s team to claim victory by 4 shots.
Pulborough Flying High At The Top of The BML League!
Bowls Jane Gray - Pulborough BC
A positive week for Pulborough began with the first of 2 West Sussex Bowls League fixtures, away at Worthing Pavilion on Monday afternoon. With close scores on 3 out of the 4 rinks, Pulborough did well to add to their points tally by a valuable

2 league points, keeping them second in Division 2, with Pavilion holding the top spot by just 6 points. Top rink of the day went to skip, John Brown, with Steve Adsett as lead, Mick Ralph as number 2 and Chris Etherington as number 3, 20 shots to 18. The only artificial green on Pulborough’s BML circuit faced them
on Weds at Southbourne. 2 triples played some intense, but good natured bowls, with Pulborough managing to steel a hard-fought 2 league points, where many others have failed! Pulborough top the Brookes Motors League table in division 1, after winning the entire league in 2016! The final result was 35/39 to Pulborough and a top rink to Alan Jordan, Kath Ayling and Paul Smith, 24/19. The Worthing based Grasshoppers visited Pulborough on Thurs, for a game of 5 triples over 18 ends, in warm conditions. The team of x-police and invited guests struggled to adapt to Pulborough’s green and found themselves behind on all 5 rinks by half way. The trend continued until the end, with Pulborough just edging ahead on the 5th rink by just 2 points! Top rink, by a country mile, was skip Paul Day, with Julie Day and Mick Ralph in support, 31/5! The final result was a convincing 99/47 to Pulborough. The final game of the week was a home game in the West Sussex Bowls League against Tarring Priory on Friday from 2pm.
Horsham appoint high scoring Titch Hanspal as new coach
Titch Hanspal Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pre season planning is well under way at Horsham Hockey Club and the men’s first team are delighted to announce that, in a major coup for the club, they have signed Sevenoaks’ goal scoring machine Tenjinder Hanspal as coach for the 201718 campaign. Team Manager Al Campbell says: “Our player coach Dom Male has piloted us through two promotions in five seasons but last term he went through a lot of pain with various niggles and injuries and now wants to spend a bit more time with his young family. He feels that he’s taken the side as far as he could so it’s a good time to introduce Tenjinder - who is affectionally known throught the hockey community as Titch. Meanwhile, the club will be forever grateful to Dom and his spectacular achievements and we hope to
be able to call on his services as a player.” Al continued: “Titch is one of the all time top scorers in the National League and last season he helped Sevenoaks win promotion to the Premiership. He’s 39 and for the time being he’ll remain as a player for the Kent club who play on Sundays, enabling him to devote his Saturdays to us, run mid week coaching and plan overall strategy starting with pre season fixtures.” Sevenoaks are the reigning English Hockey Club of the year and also European Hockey Club of the Year, Horsham skipper Andrew Isaacs telling us: “We’re delighted to have Titch on board – it took me a long time to get him, but it has been very much worth the chase. Last season we had one of the best defences in the league, but scored the second lowest number of goals, so we hope that having a mentor of Titch’s calibre will galvanise our front line and the goals will start to flow.” Hanspal formerly played for Indian Gymkana and is well respected in hockey circles for his outstanding striking ability – Fareham Performance Director Ben Barnes ruefully recalling: “We were shell shocked when he played against us! He scored a hatrick in a 5-0 thrashing, repeating his treble when our teams met earlier in the season.” Horsham men’s campaign starts on September 30, Al Campbell saying: “A couple of stalwarts have retired and we’re hoping to announce a few new signings.” A preview of the new season will appear in the District Post.
Horsham humbled in the National T20 Cup Sunday July 30 – ECB National Club Twenty20 Area Final Horsham 92-9 (20 overs) Tunbridge Wells 94-0 (8 overs) Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Scorecards do not always tell the whole story, but this time the facts do not lie – Horsham suffered a resounding defeat in the Area Final of the ECB National Club Twenty20 competition, for which they qualified as last year’s Sussex Cup winners. Tunbridge Wells, hovering just seven points clear of the penultimate club, are in danger of relegation from the Kent Premier League. And, in May Roffey eliminated them from the ECB National Club Championship, but they made surprisingly short work of Horsham at the HSBC ground near New Beckenham station. The outcome of T20 matches can hinge on a few game changing overs, as proved to be the case when, following a delayed start because of heavy overnight rain, Horsham batted first after winning the toss. They
soon rattled up 30 for the loss of one wicket, but then came a rapid deterioration. Ryan Maskell made 17, but Horsham’s other big guns – Tom Haines, Michael Thornely, Nick Oxley and Tom Johnson only batted for a total of 26 balls as the score slumped to 35-5 and then 436. Second XI Captain Paul Williams top scored with 18, extras making the same contribution, as the last three wickets more than doubled the score. But, a target of 93 was never likely to be too troubling for the Kent side, who blazed away to finish the game in only eight overs with 10 fours and 3 sixes – compared with just two boundaries and one maximum in the Horsham innings, all struck by Maskell. Tunbridge Wells Captain Chris Williams bludgeoned 60 from 28 balls and Christian Davis – who, a year ago hit the record score for Sussex 2nd XI, an unbeaten 258 (against Glamorgan) – made 24 from 20 deliveries. Horsham’s bowling analyses are best left unexamined and they will be keen to expunge this result from their memory as they enter the business end of the season.

YMCA beat Horsham in competitive pre season work out
Photos by John Lines
Tuesday August 1 – Pre season Friendly Horsham YMCA 3 Horsham 2 Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The sizeable crowd were entertained to a competitive game on an immaculate pitch in pleasant summer evening weather, YMCA running out winners against their former tenants Horsham. The main objective was to try out the squads - especially new
signings - in different formations to clarify options for forthcoming cup and league fixtures, with players taking the opportunity to stake their claim. An early Hornets corner came to nought before YM blazed over, but a goal soon followed when Brad Curtis put YM ahead from close range. The lead was quickly extinguished when Scott Kirkwood found the top right of the net. A subsequent corner and a ballooning shot proved fruitless for YM, who were then denied by a scrambled
clearance, but the Hornets were testing, too, only for an attack to be blocked and a free kick to go begging before the rather scrappy first half finished one apiece. Aaron Jeal in the YM goal made saves early on the resumption, then, in a one to one, Phil Johnson got past returning Hornets’ keeper Michael Hunter, ahead of new signing Joe Shelley giving YM a 3-1 advantage. Amid substitutions aplenty, a breakaway YM foray was unfulfilled, along with two more strikes, but the Hornets
were also challenging, hitting the crossbar with an overhead, until, in the dying minutes, former Worthing Captain Steve Metcalfe reduced the deficit after a prone Mark Fox, by then in goal for YM, had been unable to save with his feet. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “After winning three warm up games we deliberately arranged a couple of tough friendlies – against Dorking Wanderers and Horsham – and they’ve given us a good physical workout, which will hopefully
stand us in good stead for our FA Cup tie against Three Bridges at Gorings Mead this Saturday.” While Horsham Manager Dom Di Paola said: “We’re working hard in training, and it was very useful to give our squad some more minutes on the pitch. We won four of our previous five warm up games and I’m very pleased with the players’ commitment to take into our first league game (away to Molesey on Aug 12), before we entertain Shoreham at Lancing, our new home venue, on the 15th.
Roffey remain top after rain ruins every game Saturday July 29 - Sussex Premier League round up Cricket News Roundup Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sadly the weather forecasters got it right and rain swept across the county from west to east – not heavy drenching rain, but sufficiently persistent bouts of it to prevent any chance of finishing matches, all of which got under way only to succumb to the inevitable. Roffey were hoping to garner the maximum 30 points from winless Ansty, but only five overs were completed before the umpires were obliged to aban-
don the game. Brighton began well against current runners up East Grinstead before slipping to 128-6 from 45.4 overs when rain prevented any further play. At Middleton, Horsham had reached 61-1 when their game was called off, while at Fulking, Preston Nomads had posted 150-5 against relegation threatened Bexhill when the same fate terminated their game. With all sides awarded ten points each, the pecking order remains unchanged with Roffey top on 305 points, one more than East Grinstead. Cuckfield are third on 263 and Horsham fourth with 252. Ansty are bottom with 96 points, Bexhill occupying the penultimate berth, 78 points behind
Hastings (190). Meanwhile, two local cricketers have done well in mid week representative cricket – Horsham’s Nick Oxley made 122 when captaining Sussex U17s at Blackstone and Roffey’s Ben Manenti took wickets and held catches as a trialist playing in T20s and a championship match for Kent 2nd XI. Ben enthused: “I’ve played cricket in Australia with Kent and England batsman Joe Denly and he got me the introduction – it was a great experience.” And, former Horsham Captain and Horsham rugby player James Johnson has landed a plum job – as Assistant Trainer at Ed Dunlop’s prestigious Newmarket La Grange Stables.
Dunlop, a big name in international racing, has 95 horses in training and has seen his charges win the Ascot Gold Cup, The Oaks and other major races around the world, producing as many as 50 winners in a season. Clearly delighted with his appointment, James said: “It’s a great opportunity for me – my goal is to become a bloodstock agent and this is a big step towards that.” With five matches to play, this Saturday Horsham are back at Cricketfield Road for a local derby with Roffey, keen to avenge the mauling they suffered at the Crawley Road ground in June. Former first class umpire and top flight football referee Martin Boddenham will
New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site
officiate in that game. In the other key fixture East Grinstead entertain Bexhill. After this Saturday the last four matches of the season will be played on a 50 over win format. Meanwhile, news is awaited regarding rearrangement details for the rained off Sussex Cup Semi Final between Horsham and Roffey, the originally proposed alternative dates appearing to be unsuitable. The final is at Hove on the late summer Bank Holiday, Monday August 28, where the winner of the Horsham v Roffey tie expect to meet Preston Nomads who went through in a bowl out against Hastings after their semi final was rained off.
