Thousands enjoy a Weekend of Mediaeval Mayhem at Loxwood Thousands flocked to The Loxwood Joust at the weekend to experience the fun, laughter and mediaeval revelry in the Loxwood Meadow.

Once again the mediaeval festival had added even more excitement and entertainment to the festival for 2017, with Henry the Heartless swallowing swords, Lullaby Leesa and her amazing puppet show with a giant crocodile, Oddesy Blacksmiths demonstrating the skills of a blacksmith and Gilbert Savage, aka the executioner demonstrating his new ‘toy’ - the mediaeval torture rack.

In addition a third witch provided even more magical mystique to the witches’ wood and HAODS were strolling, entertaining and getting the audience to participate in maypole dancing and sketches.

The sound of thunderous hooves filled the jousting arena as the four daring and dashing Jousting Knights ran the tilt with speed and accuracy. Battling it out for victory, both in the saddle and on the ground with skilful sword fights, the crowds cheered the good and bad alike. With Sir Hector of Horsham and Sir Kenneth showing shameful displays of cheating and

breaking all the rules of chivalry, Sir Thomas of Loxwood and Sir Luke captivated the crowds with their talent and fair play. All four very talented Jousting Knights displayed breath taking horsemanship and quick witted banter as the crowds cheered, laughed, booed and hissed as Sir Hector of Horsham won the tournament in the blazing sunshine.

With the weather on Saturday providing a couple of quick smatterings of raindrops and one swift downpour , the crowds and mediaeval characters however were not deterred and the 120 fully armoured battling knights continued to fight for victory through the rain.

Rose from Crawley in West Sussex said “Having come to the event for the first time last year, my daughter and family have flown over from Vienna especially for this year’s Joust. There is just something for everyone. It is educational, as well as fun and my grandsons aged 8 and 10 have just spoken to an archer, who has talked and explained all about Cross Bows to them. Their comment was Awesome!”

A record number of runners have registered for this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races.

With just a few weeks to go until race day, over 1100 runners have registered for the two races, two thirds of whom are female - a 50% increase on the figures at the same time last year. Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings, commented: “We are delighted to have so many runners registered for our two races with still just over two months to go. We are particularly excited about the interest in the 10km race, which is being run for just the second time.

The new race has attracted a lot of interest from runners who don’t

want to run a half marathon, but want to experience the competition and excitement of taking part in a professionally organised event with prizes and medals for every competitor.

“Our race is organised completely by volunteers and it is important that we can attract as many runners as possible, to help us keep the event developing and flourishing”.

The 2017 event will take place on Sunday 24 September and will be the 35th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the second year of the new 10 kilometer race, which was introduced for the first time last year. The event, which is run entirely by volunteers,

raises much for charity and also makes significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs, in and around the village, who help with the staging of the race. This year’s official charity for the event is St Catherine’s Hospice and already £1500 has been pledged by runners.

There will be a unique double this year, as Horsham MP, Jeremy Quin, will start both the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. Of course there is a twist. Jeremy will be on a podium with a claxon, to act as the official starter for the Barns Green Half Marathon (approximately 10am), after which he will get into his running gear and take part in the 10km event, which starts a few minutes later at 10.20am. Horsham Joggers legend, John Booker, will be marking this, his 35th entry into the Barns Green Half Marathon, by wearing the vest number 35.

Last year, almost 1800 runners registered for the Half Marathon and 10k races, which follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater, through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. This year, once again, a number of bands and groups will be performing, at different points on the race routes, to help keep all the runners motivated.

New Cabinet Member at West Sussex County Council

A change has been announced to the Cabinet at West Sussex County Council.

Amanda Jupp has been appointed as the Cabinet Member for Adults and Health. Her portfolio includes: adult social care; adult safeguarding; health and wellbeing; public health (in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Children and Young People for relevant business).

The role will also involve working in liaison with the County Council Leader on health partnership liaison.

Mrs Jupp’s appointment follows Peter Catchpole’s decision last week to step down as the Cabinet Member for Health and Deputy Leader. The change took effect from Wednesday 2 August.

The Loxwood Joust prepares for The realities of children’s second weekend of festivities bedtime routines revealed

Photos by John Lines The Sunday then proved to be glorious all day. Visitors and participants all enjoyed the sunshine and the Zulu, the yellow billed kite took the time to soak up the sun on the Out on a Wing falconry stand!

With something for young and old alike, the 15th Century was again brought to life and families were captivated by the fast-paced, full programme of mediaeval pageant. Depicting a time where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate, the living history village and authentic recreation of a mediaeval battle which was steeped in local history, captivated the imagination.

With mediaeval weapon demonstrations, cannon fire, archery battles, falconry displays, traders and hawkers in the Mediaeval Market Place and talks from a mediaeval cook, housewife and the executioner, there was a full day of activities to experience. In addition visitors to the event were also wowed by the soothing voices of the Emmy nominated Mediaeval Baebes.

Maurice Bacon, the event’s organiser said “We have had an amazing first weekend. Both the participants and visitors young and old have really had fun. It is good to see so many adults and children getting in to the spirit of this mediaeval world and asking the characters so many questions to find out more about mediaeval life.

He continued “The Loxwood Joust always adds different experiences each year and the feedback for this year has been amazing. We have had a real mix of new and return visitors and our reputation for being one of the most, if not the most authentic mediaeval event for all the family

is clearly spreading. We love to see and hear the visitors really enjoying themselves in the Loxwood Meadows and we are really looking forward to next weekend’s festival on the 12th and 13th August.”

For 40% of UK parents: stressful bedtime routines result in moods, tantrums and tears Light evenings and school holidays can make bedtime a challenge, but for 40% of parents, the mere mention of the words ‘time for bed’ results in mood swings, tantrums and tears according to a new survey from online parenting resource Families Online (www.familiesonline.co.uk). Some parents said their children also get angry at bedtime and some admitted their child gets scared at the prospect of going to bed which can present further challenges in getting children to sleep.

Hours spent getting children to sleep…

Almost 1,800 parents across the UK (with children up to the age of eight years) were polled on their child’s bedtime routine. The results also showed that parents are spending a considerable amount of time each night on bedtime routines with a quarter of parents admitting that they spend over an hour every evening getting their child into bed and a further 52% (more than half) spend 30 to 45 minutes.

What time is bedtime?

When it comes to deciding what time is ‘bedtime’ most parents (57%) will aim to have their children in bed between 7pm-7.30pm each evening (meaning for many, that the bedtime process has to start around an hour earlier than this). For 25% of parents, 8-8.30pm is deemed to be bedtime and is more likely to be reflective of parents with older children in the category. Only 1% of parents said their child has no set bedtime suggesting that UK parents are sticklers for a regular bedtime routine.

Parents were also quizzed on their rules around eating at bedtime with a firm 60% saying they do not allow their child to have any kind of snack at bedtime.

Almost a quarter of parents (24%) say they will allow a healthy snack at bedtime (such as a piece of fruit). Interestingly, even though most parents are aware that too much sugar can have an impact on a child’s ability to sleep, 16% of parents still say they will offer their child biscuits and sweet treats at bedtime too, in a bid to get them to settle.

Staying up on a school night?

On the topic of staying up later than 10pm on a school night, a resounding 74% of parents say they would not allow this. Just under a quarter of parents (23%) said they would allow it but only on a special occasion. A final 3% said they regularly allow their child to stay up beyond 10pm on a school night.

Bedtime routines were also found to involve a whole host of elements from singing songs to brushing teeth and leaving lights on.

Parish Council pledges support to Dementia Action Alliance and Tree Charter

North Horsham Parish Council has pledged its support to Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) and to the Tree Charter over the last couple of months.

By joining the DAA, the council has agreed to work towards achieving 7 outcomes. In brief, these are: Personal choice and control of influence over personal decisions; Services that are designed to support the needs of those with dementia; Support to promote independent living; Being informed of where to get information; Living in an enabling and supportive environment where those with dementia feel valued and understood; Having a sense of belonging and being valued as part of family, community and civic life; To recognize that research is delivering changes in how the disease can be managed and providing hope for the future.

North Horsham Parish Council has agreed an Action Plan to support the outcomes within the National Dementia Declaration as follows: Some staff and Council-

lors have been trained as Dementia Friends and they are encouraged to share their knowledge and techniques with others and lead by example; To recognize that those using the services and facilities provided by North Horsham Parish Council have diverse needs and to allow users the opportunity to take their time to communicate their needs; To provide clear user instructions/ directions; To take into consideration ways in which using the buildings could be made easier to use for those with dementia and/ or other needs when undertaking any necessary work to the buildings; To work with other organisations to promote information that would be of use to those with dementia and other needs; To use a variety of ways of engaging with the community to ensure that as many residents as possible can become involved.

The challenges to delivering these outcomes are resources (especially time) and making people aware of the Parish Council’s commitment to being as inclusive as

possible to all residents.

The Charter for Trees, Woods and People is due to be launched later this year, when it will set out a series of guidelines and principles on how our communities and trees can best benefit one another. Originally an initiative of the Woodland Trust, the development of the charter is a grassroots project which has gathered input and knowledge from the public and partner organisations as it has grown. The eventual principles of the Charter will be accessible in an online format and be engraved on Legacy Poles across the country.

North Horsham Parish has a wealth of trees and woodland, which the council recognises as important economic, cultural and community assets. Local trees serve as a rich habitat for the country’s wildlife and studies have shown that they improve feelings of wellbeing. The tree charter aims to reconnect people with their local environment and act to prevent losing trees and woodland.

The public are encouraged to support the project, by giving their full name* to say that they believe in the Tree Charter Principles: Thriving habitats for diverse species; Planting for the future, 3.

Celebrating the cultural impact of trees; A thriving forestry sector that delivers for the UK; Better protection for important trees and woods; Enhancing new developments with trees; Understanding and using the health benefits of trees; Access to trees for everyone; Addressing threats to woods and trees through good management; Strengthening landscapes with woods and trees. *For every name collected a tree will be planted.

Horsham Nursery in with a chance of winning a £500 grant

Horsham Nursery School has been nominated multiple times in the Sudocrem Play More campagn.

The competition works by asking the general public to nominate nurseries that go above and beyond to get children outside and playing.

The 15 most deserving nursuries will receive either a £500 grant, a toy shed or a mural.

A survey carried out by family skincare brand, Sudocrem, on children between the ages of 6 and 11, suggests that British children believe they’re wrapped in cotton wool by their parents and would like more freedom to play outside.

Almost 3 in 5 children (57%) said their parents worried too much about their safety and almost twothirds of those aged 8 – 11 (64%) thought they should be able to go to the park with their friends, unaccompanied by an adult.

The study also revealed a generation of children who recognise they don’t play out in the fresh air often enough, with 52% of those questioned admitting they spend too much time on games consoles and a further 60% saying there should be more games to encourage kids to play outside, like Pokemon Go. Other sources suggest that

children spend as little as 5 hours outside each week, as opposed to 45.5 hours in front of a television.

Organisers have expressed the hope that, by improving nursery playgrounds, young children will be encouraged to make the most of the outside, while at the same time working to encourage parents to be “more dareful and less careful”.

Sudocrem’s Brand Manager, Georgina Fotopoulou said, “Children love outdoor play but they’re bound to scrape their knees. This is all part of the learning process.

“The parent felt that the £500 could go towards next year’s cohort learning about nature. The nursery would love to spend the money on seeds, containers and compost in preparation.”

Though enjoying a well earned Summer break, this year’s secondary school leavers will, no doubt, have spent a moment or two anxiously thinking about the dreaded results day in just a few

weeks’ time. Soon after, many will embark on a new adventure - college.

Collyer’s students Amy Knight and Mae Holmes supported their last event, last month, as College Ambassadors. The Post 16 Fair at Millais was their final presentation, after a successful 2 years being part of a team of student ambassadors who have travelled to post 16 option events, across the region, to help the next generation of students with their options.

The students kindly volunteered to give up their spare time to help pupils to make informed choices.

Collyer’s student Amy Knight, who having completed her A-levels is now set to pursue a career in teaching, said: “Being a Collyer’s Ambassador has been really rewarding. It has given me a fantastic opportunity to speak to pupils and parents, to give them the full flavour of Collyer’s life from a student perspective!”

Mae Holmes, who after working for a year is set to study at Loughborough University in 2018, said: “Collyer’s has been brilliant for me and it’s been a privilege to talk to pupils and parents about the opportunities I’ve had. This was my chance to give something back!”

The Collyer’s Ambassadors share a passion to help the next generation to understand the road into further education at the Ofsted Outstanding sixth form college and are studying subjects right across

the broad range of academic and vocational subjects and levels offered at Collyer’s.

Amy: “It was fitting that Mae and I finish our time as ambassadors back at Millais, which is an excellent school where we both enjoyed good times as pupils.” Mae added: “I wish Chloe Gardiner and Mollie Higgins, first year Collyer’s Ambassadors who also supported today’s event, every success with the rest of the team next year!

Amy and I will certainly miss it!”

Vice Principal Steve Martell said: “The aim of supporting Post 16 options events is to help pupils begin the smooth transition from school to Collyer’s. Amy and Mae and our whole team of Collyer’s Ambassadors genuinely care about the next generation and we are incredibly proud of them.”

Eco-friendly hut and garden opens in Henfield

A new eco-friendly garden has been created at Woods Mill nature reserve in Henfield to inspire visitors to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles.

The Sussex Wildlife Trust garden is complete with an eco-hut, made possible thanks to a £10,000 grant from UK Power Networks. The project was built by the trust from scratch, with the help of dozens of volunteers from the electricity company’s offices in Crawley.

Barry Hatton, the company’s director of asset management, joined staff and volunteers from Sussex Wildlife Trust to open the new garden and eco-hut on July 28, with Emma House, one of the volunteers who worked on the project. Jenny Mark-Bell, editor of Sussex Life, cut the ribbon to declare the garden and eco-hut officially open.

Barry said: “Our employees

thoroughly enjoyed working on this new garden and they should be proud of what they have created with the experts at Sussex Wildlife Trust. It is a living classroom, where people can pick up ideas to support the environment in their own homes and gardens. We hope people will enjoy visiting the garden for years to come.”

Pete Crawford, Head of People and Wildlife at Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “The eco-hut is a great educational resource and the wildlife garden integrates native species and familiar garden plants as a showcase of pollinator-friendly planting.”

An information board explains what is in the garden and simple ways to recreate it at home.

The timber eco-hut has a living roof, planted with droughtresistant plants to attract insects.

Drainpipes connect the roof to water butts to show rainwater harvesting in action. A solar panel on the roof powers a variety of lightbulbs inside the hut, from old energy-hungry varieties to energy efficient types and ultra-efficient LED lightbulbs.

One side of the hut is insulated with different materials, such as sheep wool and recycled paper, with transparent peep holes to see the different types of insulation. The other side of the hut has no insulation, allowing visitors to compare temperatures on each side of the structure.

In the garden area there is a mini-meadow with wild flowers for bees, butterflies and hoverflies, log piles for mini-beasts, a hedge for birds and insects and a pond for amphibians. There is also a minivegetable plot to encourage people to grow their own and reduce food miles.

Three volunteers groups from UK Power Networks offices in Hazelwick Avenue, Three Bridges, have worked on the project over the last year. Volunteer, Emma House, said: “It was really nice working on this project. It was good to see everyone come together and work on something lasting. I look forward to seeing how the garden turned out.”

UK Power Networks has a partnership with the nine Wildlife Trusts across the areas it serves in the South East, London and East of England. All staff have two days’ paid leave each year, to volunteer or fundraise in the community, and many work on the Wildlife Trust’s projects.

News Horsham & District Radiation Issues group call for members A new independent group called the ‘Horsham & District Radiation Issues’ has been formed and is looking for new members. It meets once a month and its objective is to discuss, advise and hold public events to bring attention to the likely harmful health effects of continual exposure to smart meters, cordless phones, mobiles, wireless routers and cell towers.

PMW finalists in prestigious Third Sector Awards 2017

Billingshurst based full-service marketing agency PMW Communications has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Third Sector Awards 2017.

The awards recognise and celebrate those who work to give something back to their community. PMW is a finalist in the Communications Agency Campaign of the Year category for the work it undertook, free of charge, to fundraise on behalf of the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC) and to also mark the great lady’s 100th birthday earlier in the year.

PMW launched the #VERA100 campaign, which saw the agency heavily promote and produce all the marketing collateral for a variety show, which took place at the London Palladium, in honour of the Forces’ Sweetheart.

In addition, it organised a surprise spectacle to take place on the White Cliffs of Dover on Dame Vera’s birthday. Huge replica bluebirds were placed on top of the cliffs, a Spitfire flyover took place and WWII veterans performed a military

salute.

With an aim of generating a minimum of £10,000 to enable DVLCC to purchase a ‘magic carpet’ to help the children it supports, the campaign was a huge success and over £60,000 was raised.

Peter Sutton, Managing Director of PMW Communications, commented: “At PMW we have been big supporters of the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity for a number of years and we were delighted to be involved with the celebrations to mark Dame Vera’s 100th birthday and raise money for her charity.

Drusillas Park, Alfriston, has been running a competition to rename their sloth Consuela.

Last week, the zoo discovered that their lovely lady was keeping something extra tucked safely away… Consuela, it turns out, is actually a male. Now that the results are in, Drusillas is proud to announce that the winning name is Gordon.

There was an overwhelming response to the Park’s call for help, with over 2,000 people submitting suggestions. There were some impressive entries, and names, such as ‘David Hasslesloth’, ‘John Slow’, ‘Nigel’ and ‘Sid’, ranked among the best.

The winning entry came from Lorna French-Gietzen, from Eastbourne, who carefully picked out ‘Gordon’ to compliment the name of Drusillas’ other resident sloth, Flash.

Lorna commented: “This is amazing; my girls will be so excited! We will come and see you very soon Gordon! I never thought we would win!”

It’s very hard to determine the gender of a sloth, as there is virtually no difference between males and females. In fact, it is so hard to tell their sex, it’s actually quicker to send a fur sample off for DNA testing than it is for zoo keepers to try and work it out for themselves.

Dreamboats and Petticoats The hit musical Dreamboats and Petticoats will make a welcome return to The Hawth, Crawley, next month, celebrating golden hits from the rock ‘n’ roll era.

Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, the writers behind TV classics ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’, ‘Birds of a Feather’, ‘The New Statesmen’ and ‘Shine On Harvey Moon’, are behind the show that features classic tracks from Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Eddie Cochran, Billy Fury, and many more.

Set in 1961, emotions are running high as young musicians Norman and Bobby compete to win a national songwriting competition – and more importantly, the attention of the gorgeous Sue! But when Bobby discovers that shy Laura is no slouch on the piano, love and rock ‘n’ roll fame

Echium Isles Numskull The heats will take place on 13th & 18th August at Horsham Sports Club (aka: the Cricket Club) from 7pm. Three bands from each heat will go through to the Originals Bands final during the ‘Festival Weekend’ in the Human Nature Garden, Horsham Park on 19th

& 20th August. Entries are now closed in all three competitions.

Entry to the heats is free, while tickets for the weekend are on sale now at www.horshambotb. co.uk or can be purchased on the gate. Horsham BotB is a nonprofit event that relies entirely on weekend door sales and sponsorship from its chief sponsor QM Studios for it to take place. Entry is £5 for the Saturday, £4 for the Sunday or £7 for the weekend (under 12’s go free).

The weekend will kick off with the Covers competition on the Saturday afternoon from 12pm with the final of the Originals Bands competition taking place in the evening from 5pm. The event will then come to a close on the Sunday afternoon with the Acoustic Originals competition from 12:30pm.

As a special treat, last year’s three winners THE FARMBOYS, FLYING LOW and HOLLIE ROGERS will each perform headline sets while the expert judges deliberate

in each competition.

The weekend will once again have a circus theme with professional circus performers on site, circus workshops for kids and face painting. Hot food will be supplied courtesy of Apple & Cor and popular Horsham market traders DJ’s Spot. Hepworth’s bar will once again provide the beverages and will have an extensive wine selection as well as the usual beers and ciders. People are welcome to bring their own picnic style food but camping stoves, bbq’s and alcohol are prohibited and will be confiscated at the gate, so don’t bring them!

In the run up to the weekend, the BotB website will also once again host an online People’s Choice poll where fans can get involved, check out the bands that have entered and vote for their favourites.

Something exciting has been happening at The Capitol over the past fortnight – you may have spotted the troupe of 80 Summer School students who have been rehearsing!

The culmination of their hard work will be seen this weekend, when they stage a full-scale production of Bugsy Malone, complete with live band and authentic splurge guns!

Director, Timothy J Howe, explained: “This phenomenal young company has achieved a great deal in the days we have been rehearsing this project…

Just over 2 weeks ago we met on this stage for the first time, with not a single note sung, a dance move memorised or a staging note taken. And yet here they are, singing their hearts out, moving like their lives depended upon it

and interacting with each other as if it were second nature. What they have achieved here should not be underestimated. They have handled it as seamlessly as if this were a professional company of actors. I hope they are justifiably proud of themselves for all they have accomplished.”

As the creative hub for Horsham, The Capitol are keen to promote the performing arts to young people from all backgrounds, giving them opportunities to learn, grow in confidence and develop skills and their personalities in a friendly, safe environment.

Producer and General Manager of The Capitol, Nick Mowat, said: “Over the past four years, The Capitol Summer School has developed into a major part of our programme and we have been able

to offer a large number of young people something interesting to participate in during the school holidays. We know it’s hard work – learning a fully staged show in just 2 weeks is a big ask, but with the support of the creative team and our technical department, the young people involved produce a show of a consistently high standard.”

Southwater Leisure Centre is looking to appoint two part time Duty Managers/ Gym Instructors to Level 2 plus a Gym Instructor to Level 2. These positions will be subject to an initial six month temporary contract.

Reporting to the Assistant Leisure Centre Manager, you will be responsible for the provision of conducting member inductions in a thorough and engaging way and teaching fitness related classes and a range of sports classes.

The successful candidates will also be expected to build upon existing sports/fitness activities and develop new ones. Candidates will desirably hold some basic sports coaching and gym qualifications to Level 2. A requirement will be to continue to enhance their professional development by obtaining additional qualifications as and when required. The gym instructor will be required to undertake all duties within the gym and carry out customer inductions and other related tasks.

The successful candidate will be a good communicator and be able to motivate members & staff to achieve their goals.

A win for the East by one run

Stoolball Richard Emsley Stoolball England’s West of England Over 50s versus East of England Over 50s match took place at Billingshurst Cricket Club on Sunday 29th July.

West of England Over 50s won the toss and elected to put East of England Over 50s into bat.

West of England Over 50s were represented by Caroline Gorman, Sue Targett, Rachael Bartlett,

Val Lindsay, Sarah Reeves and Lindsey Parris from the Loxwood club and Sally Booker from Broadbridge Heath.

East of England Over 50s were put in to bat and duly scored 163 for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs. The highlight of the innings was a score of 60 not out

by Anne Hardwick from Langton Green. Caroline Gorman and Val Lindsay taking 3 and 2 wickets each.

In reply, West of England Over

50s started briskly with Caroline Gorman scoring 57 and Sue Targett scoring 62, but a batting colapse saw them reduced from 139 for 3 to 162 all out with Paula Peters from Barcombe taking 5 wickets.

Pulborough’s Penny Rhoder Cup Raises Valuable Funds For Macmillan!

With a rain cancellation against the RAFA in the Brookes Motors League on Weds, netting another 3 league points for Pulborough BC, hopes were high for some actual match-play for the rest of the week!

A home friendly against Chichester on Fri evening, proved a valuable opportunity to seek revenge for the all-rink defeat on the Chichester green at the end of June! 4 triples played 18 ends of highly competitive bowls, but the Pulborough players lead from the start across the board. The closest game was on rink 2, with Alan Jordan, Mike Richards and George Lewis, who had to fight for their 15/13 win. Malcolm Gray and team managed 20/15, despite dropping a 5 on the 10th end! Pulborough’s 2 newest players; Jim Humpheys and John Walsh, showed fantastic potential by being in the top 2 scoring triples of the day, with top rink going to skip, Paul Day, with Jane Gray as lead and Jim Humphreys as 2, 31 shots to 7, winning 12 of the 18 ends! The final score was 86/46 to Pulborough.

Saturday the 5th Aug heralded the 3rd Annual Penny Rhoder Cup at Pulborough BC. Regular players mixed with Penney’s family and friends to play a game of triples under blue skies for the most part, until the heavens opened halfway through and the players had to run for cover from the torrential rain

and hail, that put pay to play for the rest of the day! The result was generated from the scores after 8 ends, with second place going to Alan Jordan, Hugh Hubbard and Amy Parker with Birthday boy George Lewis, Linda Meadowcroft and Martyn Ralph winning the Penny Rhoder Cup! The sponsors of the day; Duncan Reeds of Billingshurst, Lee Davy and Martyn Ralph, helped to ensure that in excess of £550 was raised for Macmillan in memory of Penny and hopes are high to top that amount in 2018!

The final fixture of the week was away against our friends at Steyning BC on Sunday afternoon.

1 win, a draw and 2 losses, allowed Steyning to sneak victory by a mere 4 shots, with top rink for Pulborough going to skip, Paul Day, with Jane Gray as lead and Mick Ayling as number 2, 20/14. A few drinks at the bar and a stream of banter throughout the game made for a fantastic afternoon of bowls in great company!

Pulborough next play at home in the WSBL against Arundel on Weds 9th from 5.30pm, a club day with the Rotary Club of Pulborough and Storrington on Thurs from 6pm, at home to the Witterings in the WSBL on Sat from 2pm and the heats of the internal pairs competition take place on Sunday from Midday or 2pm, time TBC. Spectators always welcome.

£300 raised at 70th anniversary tournament

Horsham Bridge Club raised £300 for the Friends of Ingfield Manor during their 70th anniversary tournament at the Five Oaks special school on July 30.

Ingfield Manor caters for pupils, aged 3-19, with neurological motor impairments. Manager Alan Setchell, himself a member of Horsham Bridge Club, said: “We are very grateful for all the support the club gives. We were touched that some winners added their prizes to the club’s donation.

We will put the money to very good use.”

David and Andrea Galpin won the 40-pair main competition; Sylvia Drury and Jane House were the top lower-ranked pair; Stan Ball and Kevin Wilmot won the 10-pair welcome event. All enjoyed the Bridge Birthday Cakes made by Gini Phillips.

Atlantis at National Championships

While the World Swimming Championships were taking place in Budapest swimmers from Atlantis travelled to the glamourous town of Sheffield and the home of National Swimming for two weeks of competition.

The event is seperated into British Championships in the first week and Home Nations Championships in the second.

First to swim in week one was the experienced Lily Davis in the 50M breaststroke. Qualifying comfortably for the final in a fantastic PB (personal best) of 33.00 seconds Lily was in good form.

The final was a really close race with Lily touching in 4th Place in 33.06. Although the team were gutted to just miss a medal it was a fantastic performance from Lily who after a tough 12 months was rewarded for her hard work.

Next to swim was rookie Amelia Wright in the 200 Breast. Having

qualified for the event at South East regionals with a staggering 7 sec Pb it was a big ask for Amelia to produce her previous form so soon after. Amelia however is one that doesn’t shy away from a challenge and produced an amazing 1.13 PB to finish as reserve finalist.

Following Amelia also competing at British Nationals for the first time was Zoe Cawsey. A blistering 30.25 and a new Sussex County Record saw Zoe qualify for the final at her first attempt.

After a fantastic start in the final Zoe couldn’t quite hang on till the finish and finished in 9th Place but with a new PB and County Record the team were estatic with her result.

Finishing up the first week was Senior Club Captain in the 50 Free.

Despite qualify ing several times before this was the first time Beth had raced at the competition.

against some extremely formidable swimmers Beth carried on her good form to reach the final in 7th Place. Like Amelia after such a massive swim at Regionals where she was crowned champion Beth couldn’t quite reproduce her form but despite that she and her coach were more than happy with her achievements in week 1.

The second week started with the 100 Breast and saw both Lily and Amelia back in action. Lily comfortabley qualified for the final in the fastest lane with Amelia qualifying in 4th place. The final was a faboulousy close race with Lily finishing second by a meer .01 of a second but a Silver Medal was her reward for a great swim.

Amelia produced another amazing PB in the final to finish in a very satisfying 4th place. Despite being on 15 her mature attitude to racing promises much for the future.

Next to race was debutant Amber Ranson. Swimming in a tough age group and depite being on 12 years of age Amber managed to take the last spot in the final and produced a dazzling PB. 32.25 to finish in 8th Place for her first experience of racing at the highest level.

On the final day Jacob Davis younger brother of Lily and Beth Britton were in action in the 50 Breast and 100 Free respectively.

Again in his first appearance Jacob kept up the Davis tradition of qualifying for the final in first place and with a most awesome PB of 32.88 Jacob like his sister picked up a Silver Medal.

Equally in the 100 Free Beth qualified in second place for the final and in her last race before going to University next year was more than up for the challenge.

To Beth’s surprise she swam her heart out and with a PB of 58.49 picked up a Bronze Medal as her reward.

put in to bat, posting 60 off the first six overs, openers Ben Manenti and Matt Davies making 34 and 44 respectively, Davies hitting 5 huge sixes. Usman Khan contributed a typically lively 27 and Rohit Jagota plundered 31, but the scoring rate dropped significantly on the reintroduction of the perpetual scourge of Roffey, Michael Munday, who took 5-14 in his four over allocation. But, Roffey posted 166, a useful, rather than killer, score. Munday snared an LBW with a front of the hand slider, before bowling four batsmen – three in Roffey’s final over, saying: “I wasn’t too worried about bowling the last over after Rohit was out – he’s such a good player of spin. Now we’ll need to bat well.” Replying, Horsham had 36 on the board after 4 overs, but once Ryan Maskell departed for 44, smartly stumped

by Davies, and Captain Michael Thornely for 31, only Nick Oxley and Mika Ekstrom reached double figures. Ben Manenti pouched a superb running overhead catch and Abdul Khan – Usman’s brother - bowling admirably straight from the town end, took 5-21 in three overs, Horsham being

bowled out 41 runs adrift. Roffey skipper Davies told us: “I thought we were about 15 short, but if we bowled well I knew we could win and Abdul treated us to a class display.” Abdul added: “It was just a case of bowling tightly, so I kept it simple and pitched it up.”

While Horsham Captain Michael Thornely said: “It was gettable but they bowled well and we didn’t hit as many sixes as they did.”

In the previous 35 year history of the competition Horsham have won it a record 13 times, but, after being beaten in last year’s semi, this year’s final is Roffey’s first - against Preston Nomads at Hove on the late August Bank Holiday, Monday 28. The penultimate stage of the competition was controversial after both semi finals were originally washed out.

Nomads qualified after a bowl out was insisted upon against Hastings, whereas the League allowed Horsham and Roffey to rearrange their semi, albeit - despite the final being more than three weeks hence - mandating that it had to be played last Sunday on the same day that Roffey were already committed to another important game.

East Grinstead stole a march on Roffey, leap-frogging them to top the table after bowling out Bexhill for a paltry 95 and then knocking off the runs in 17 overs in the only completed game in last Saturday’s Premier League.

At Horsham there was a delayed start, following which Roffey began brightly until rain interrupted twice more, the second stoppage proving terminal when a prolonged heavy downpour left patches of standing water. With eight fours and two sixes, Rohit Jagota’s fifty ball 61 saw the game intriguingly placed on 162-4 from 29.1 overs when it was called off. After five weeks in the lead Roffey drop to second, 19 points behind fortunate East Grinstead, Roffey coach Simon Fearnely telling the District Post: “It was frustrating we couldn’t get a result when East Grinstead were able to complete, but there’s nothing we can do about that so we just need to win all of our four remaining games to put them under pressure.”

Elsewhere, beleaguered Ansty scored 39-2 against Brighton, Cuckfield got to 105-4 against Middleton, and Preston Nomads made 145-2 at Hastings,

but all to no avail. Despite the rain there was time for notable performances from two outstanding local cricketers – on the John Drew Ground at Horsham’s Cricketfield Road, 16 year old opening bat Adam Goacher struck 52 with 8 fours and a six in seven overs of fireworks for a Horsham feeder XI versus Belgrave Adelaide, and at Worthing former Billingshurst Captain Ben “Muralitharan” Wiiliams grabbed 7-30 to skittle the hosts after they looked certain to overtake Billi’s 160. Adam told us: “The forecast was bad so I decided to get some quick runs on the board to put us in a winning position if the rain relented”, while Ben said: “We’d only set a modest target so somebody needed to do something special and it was my day.” There are four rounds of matches left to play in the Premier League – Roffey return home tomorrow (Saturday) to take on third placed Cuckfield, the only team to beat them this season.

Horsham travel to Brighton and East Grinstead host Preston Nomads. Then, in the following three weeks of the season’s title race, Roffey visit Hastings, then return home to play Middleton before finishing against Preston Nomads at Fulking, while East Grinstead go to bottom club Ansty before hosting Horsham and travelling to Cuckfield.

Mirfield Cup Finals Day at Horsham this Sunday!

The district’s Mirfield Cup Finals Day will be at Horsham Cricket Club this Sunday (August 13) when Barns Green, Billingshurst, Horsham and Southwater will compete in two semi finals starting at 11, with the final following at 2.30.

Matches will be played under T20 conditions, a formula introduced when the Mirfield – named after Frank Mirfield, an early President of Horsham CC – began in 1959, long before the format’s adoption by the professional game worldwide.

The well attended Mirfield final - always accompanied by plenty of banter among the friendly rivals - has long been an outstanding event at Horsham Cricket Club and this year’s re-launch, switching it from a midweek evening basis onto the Sunday finals day tournament will give it an even more distinctive and exceptional showcase.

President Barry Peay said: “We’ve changed the format to reflect the modern era”, organiser David Horsman told the District Post: “In this year’s Mirfield we’re staging the competition on a single Sunday to provide a really memorable day of matches and we’ve invited previously successful participants to provide the entertainment!”

Horsham’s Shaka Shambrook added: “Its great to keep the tradition and spirit of the Mirfield going in our new and exciting finals day competition, culminating in presentation of the cup to a local club and we look forward to welcoming the players, officials and supporters of the teams and all local cricket followers to join in our celebration on this special day”. For the record, the four competing clubs have won the Mirfield Cup 14 times between them – Barns Green took it in 1961 and 1975, Billingshurst in 2006, 2007 and 2012, Southwater in 2011 and 2013, while Horsham have carried off the silverware on seven occasions, lastly in 1993.
