First West Sussex free music festival hailed a great success The first West Sussex free music festival, for 16-25 year olds with additional needs, has been hailed a success despite the downpours.

Summerfest 2017 took place on Wednesday 9 August and featured live music, entertainment and a BBQ at Lodge Hill, near Pulborough.

One mother and carer from Billingshurst said she arrived with a highly anxious daughter and left with a really happy and excited young adult, who had been treated as such.

Jenny Heredge, whose 23-yearold daughter, Immy, has autism, social communication disorder and extreme anxiety disorder, said: “Did it rain? Not sure anyone noticed, we were all too busy having fun.

“Summerfest was the most brilliant experience, not just for Immy, but for so many young adults who simply aren’t normally given the opportunity to experience anything like this.

“It gave these young people a real experience of a music festival in a safe yet exciting environment. The music was loud enough to create the right atmosphere, yet sensitive to the fact that extreme volume might have increased anxiety in some.

“It was a truly memorable experience for so many. When asked Immy’s opinion of the evening,

she said she loved it and asked ‘can we go again tomorrow?’”

SummerFest 2017 was a collaboration between Lodge Hill, West Sussex County Council and Amaze.

The event featured a mix of disabled and non-disabled performers, including two DJs, a Crawley-based five piece band, a beatboxer and a six piece funk soul combo, and also temporary tattoos, juggling, bubblepop, a photo booth, face painting, a stilt walker, giant Jenga, Connect 4, a covered marquee, mocktails and last minute emergency waterproof ponchos for everyone.

Lucy Keeffe, mother of Joshua Keeffe-Magan, an 18-year-old from Littlehampton with Down’s Syndrome, said: “It was great for Josh to meet his three mates and dance and party without feeling like he was being ‘stalked’ by his mum.”

Stephen Hillier, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Summerfest 2017 gave parents and carers the chance to get some well-deserved respite, whilst the young people were able to let their hair down and be themselves.

“Despite the downpours, Summerfest 2017 was still a huge success and that is a credit to everyone involved in the event.”

Elderly and vulnerable residents fed up with unwanted phone calls are reminded that technology is available to sift out potential con callers.

West Sussex Trading Standards have prevented 99.7% of 15,572 nuisance and scam calls after the first call blocker devices were installed last year.

Eighty devices have so far been installed since February 2016 with a further 20 ready to loan to qualifying residents.

Following their installation, one call blocker recipient said: “As my brother and I live abroad, I wanted to thank you (Trading Standards) for everything you’re doing to support my parents in their home.”

Another resident added: “Thanks very much for fitting the call blocking system for my mum, it has given her peace of mind.”

Residents are urged to be cautious of suspicious calls from phone scammers posing

as trusted authoritative figures requesting personal data or financial information.

West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, Debbie Kennard, said: “I can’t stress enough how invaluable call blockers have proved to be in protecting our residents this past year, the number of reported suspect calls is alarming.

“Not only do they prevent our most vulnerable residents from high-end scams worth thousands of pounds, but the call blockers’ sheer presence takes away their worry when answering the phone.”

To be considered for one of the limited remaining number of call blockers, West Sussex residents must be able to prove they receive unwanted calls on a regular basis and have care or support needs.

Relatives, carers and friends can also apply on behalf of people who meet the criteria.

Think before you throw On average, a fifth of our local household rubbish bins are filled with recycling. And the cost is huge. Over one year, throwing away all that recycling is costing us £3 million a year that we don’t need to be spending.

West Sussex County Council has recently launched its ‘Think Before You Throw’ campaign to help residents make some quick wins and ultimately save the County Council money to put back into core services.

So what items are getting missed? Aerosols, tin foil, trigger sprays (e.g kitchen and bathroom cleaners), glass jars, food containers (e.g plastic fruit/vegetable trays, yoghurt and ice-cream tubs), squeezy bottles (e.g. tomato ketchup), plastic pill packets (e.g. headache/hay fever tablets)...

The County Council went through thousands and thousands of bags of rubbish to see exactly what ended up in people’s bins. The fifth that gets thrown away, which is recyclable, adds up to 32,000 tonnes

a year - a mountain of waste which could be avoided.

West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Deborah Urquhart, said: “This is so simple. We know, in West Sussex, there are huge numbers of residents who are doing a great job recycling. It’s just people don’t realise the extra items you can put in your recycling.

“So empty aerosols, tin foil, trigger sprays, glass jars, drink containers, squeezy ketchup bottles, empty packets of Nurofen, they can all go in.

If they need washing, all you need to do is rinse them out.

They don’t need to be spotless.

“Then put them in the recycling bin, loose - not in plastic bags, and help save millions of pounds as well.”

Lions commemorate 100 years

To commemorate the 100th year of Lions Clubs International, Horsham Lions Club have just embarked on its 55th year of service and combined with Horsham District Council to provide a Hide at the Warnham Nature Reserve.

Immediate Past President Lion, Tom Osborne, said: “Horsham Lions Club have just embarked on its 55th year of service to the Horsham Community and marking the Centennial of Lions Clubs International by having a project that would help and support our local community.”

The wheels for the project had

been set in motion in 2015, after the hide was suggested by a fairly new member at the time, Mr Aston Trelford. Lion Aston was also a “hard working volunteer” at the Warnham Nature Reserve and knew that the reserve had plans to rennovate, but lacked sufficient funds. The club found the decision to fund the project an easy one to make. Mr Osborne explained: “members learnt that some 20,000 people visit the Warnham Nature Reserve each year, including many school children from local schools and youth based organisations, to learn about wild life and ecology issues. Horsham

Lions Club Members felt that this proposal ticked all the boxes for their “Centennial Project.” then he went on to say: “Sadly, before the construction of the hide could start the news of Aston Trelford’s passing, after a short illness came through. At this time club members were trying to decide on the name for the new hide; Up to this point all the hides had been named after birds. A suggestion was put forward that the hide should be named after Aston Trelford, in the light of his long association with Warnham Nature Reserve.”

Mr Osborne then introduced the Chairman of The Friends of Warnham Nature Reserve. He first thanked The Horsham District Council and Horsham Lions for the additional opportunity offered to visitors to view a new vista, The naming of the hide to the memory of Aston Trelford was deemed fitting: “he had been one of the original members of the Friends and largely instrumental in obtaining lottery money for the development of the Reserve.”

Jenny Boyce, who had been Aston’s partner, was invited to cut the ribbon to the hide and expressed her pleasure in doing so and at the recognition given to Aston.

The assembled company, accompanied by the Horsham MP, Jeremy Quinn, then entered and inspected the Hide.

“Thousands of homes have already been protected from potential surface water or groundwater flooding and other flood related issues, thanks to Operation Watershed over the years, and there will be plenty more to benefit this year.

“The first five schemes all met our criteria for help, and clearly demonstrate how communities want to help themselves and take responsibility for flood risk in their areas.”

West Sussex County Council has approved its first batch of Operation Watershed applications over the summer.

The County Council has made £500,000 available for 2017/18 to help communities protect themselves against flooding. Parish and town councils and community groups are welcome to apply now to the Operation Watershed Active Community Fund for help.

Bob Lanzer, WSCC’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Highways, said: “Operation Watershed is up and running, once again, for those community projects that protect people and properties from the risks of surface water and ground water flooding.

Holiday Intensive Courses Available

First five ‘Operation Watershed’ flooding projects aided by County Council this summer of improvements. This includes unblocking culverts and clearing ditches in the Sandhills Road/ Plumtree Lane area; drainage work to stop the footpath flooding in Smugglers Lane; replacing pipes and culverts in Trout Lane; and drainage improvements to the south side of Fulfords Hill.

Community groups, volunteer groups, town and parish councils within West Sussex are all eligible to apply.

As before, all applications need support from the local elected County Councillor. In previous years the Operation Watershed Active Communities Fund was oversubscribed, so WSCC has stated: “The earlier you submit a bid, the more likely you are for it to be successful.”

Top 6 Tips for students on A Level exam results day

You’ve done the study, sat the exams and now it’s results day!

Kim Clifford, from the Association of Colleges, is on hand with some top tips to help you make sense of your results and get one step closer to that bright future that is waiting for you.

1 - You have your results in hand - what next? Confirm your place: You’ve received your results, now log onto UCAS track! If your firm offer has been confirmed - make sure you contact the college or university to confirm your place.

2 - Didn’t get the grades you wanted? First off, don’t panic you have options and there are lots of out there. Have you considered higher apprenticeships or the clearing system? You may be able to re-sit exams or find a different higher education course.

3 - Be clear about clearing: If you’re going through clearing,

make sure you have: a clearing guide (such as the UCAS website); access to a phone; a notebook; a pen. You’ll need them for calling universities and colleges to find out what is on offer, depending on your grades. If you have a grade above your firm offer, you can use UCAS adjustment to trade up to another course, university or college.

4 - Know your options: If you’ve changed your mind or don’t want to take the academic university route, investigate your local college. They offer technical and professional qualifications such as BTECs at Level 3, advanced apprenticeships and also Foundation Degrees or Higher National Diplomas. These qualifications often include working directly with employers on placements so it can be an excellent experience.

5 - Explore apprenticeships: If you want a degree without

university tuition fees and at the same time get a paid job, it may be possible to find a higher apprenticeship. Many local and national companies now offer apprenticeships. Colleges can help find the right one for you. Alternatively, search for apprenticeships at www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship 6 - And finally, be proud of yourself: You’ve got this far!

Whether you have received the grades you wanted or not, there is something out there that is right for you. The key thing is to know your options, do your research and get advice from reliable sources such as careers advisers.

There’s also the option of taking a gap year and maybe getting some work experience before going on to further study.

Kim Clifford is Associate Director for Sixth Form Colleges at the Association of Colleges (AoC), which is the membership organisation for colleges in England. She explained: “This may seem like a really scary time, as you are moving on to something new and unfamiliar. But stay calm and think carefully about what you want to do. Make sure you have access to information about all the options available, so that you’ll be able to make the best decision for your future. If you’re not sure, speak to your local college, which can advise you on all the options available.”

Westlake House opens doors to lonely older people Westlake House in Horsham have recently launched a way to tackle loneliness in the community, by inviting anyone (who would usually dine alone) to join them on Wednesdays.

It is hoped that the weekly offer of a free meal, in good company, will help reduce the feeling of isolation that some older people in Horsham are sadly facing on a daily basis.

Diners will be treated to a tasty lunch in the home’s recently refurbished dining room and will have the chance to chat to the home’s staff and residents while enjoying their food.

The home’s Head Chef is highly trained in cooking up dishes for individuals with a range of dietary needs and preferences so, if diners are unable to eat what’s on the Menu for the day, or simply don’t like it, the kitchen staff are on hand to provide tasty alternatives.

The ‘Don’t Dine Alone’ initiative was launched by care provider

Barchester Healthcare as a way to reach out to isolated or vulnerable members of their local communities.

General Manager Elizabeth Higson at Westlake House said: “This year, my team decided that they wanted to do more to help those who feel lonely or cut off from the rest of the community, especially older people, who we know from experience find themselves feeling this way all too often. We really hope that by inviting people to join us for lunch on Wednesdays, we can help people to meet new friends and enjoy good conversation in a warm, homely environment.”

Vintage & Steam Show 2017 at the Weald & Downland Living Museum The public is invited to take a step back in time with the nostalgic sights and sounds of the era when steam powered the country.

Visitors to the Weald & Downland Living Museum in Singleton, near Chichester, can enjoy all the bustle of a traditional steam festival this weekend (19 and 20 August), with full-size and model steam engines on display at the Museum’s 40-acre site in the South Downs National Park.

The museum will host a wide range of exhibits, including commercial vehicles, military vehicles, miniature steam engines, a narrow gauge railway, model boats, Sussex Gauge One Group

display, and classic cars.

On Saturday, members of The Morgan Sports Car Club, Solent Group of the MG Car Club, Totally T-Type, 2 MG Club, plus keen vintage car enthusiasts, will display their vehicles for visitors to view.

On Sunday, the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Portsmouth Region, will hold its annual club event at the show.

A popular attraction at the event is the gallopers, which is at the centre of a traditional fairground (small charges apply).

Visitors to the show can also take a ride on the narrow gauge steam railway and enjoy a programme of displays in the arena. With a vintage themed tea tent, local crafts

Groups work together to give village a lifeline

A defibrillator, supplied by Horsham Community Responders from money raised at a recent quiz night, has been installed on the wall outside Mannings Heath Village Hall.

The quiz was organised by the Millennium Group, who put on charitable and social events throughout the year in the village, and it attracted well over 100 quizzers on the night. Marc Harrold, team leader of Horsham Community Responders, sug-

gested that it would be wonderful to supply a defibrillator for the village hall in Mannings Heath, as that was where the funds were raised. The committee that run the Village Hall has had the vital lifesaving piece of equipment fitted and will take responsibility for its maintenance. The defibrillator is fully registered with the ambulance service and, upon dialling 999, the code to the cabinet will immediately be issued to the caller.

Village Hall Committee Chairperson, Barbara Scarborough, said: “With the increasing use of the hall facilities, and regular activity on the village green, the defibrillator will be a vital asset for this very busy part of the village, to the hall users and village residents alike”.

Chairman of the Millennium, Group Roger Cato, added: “Following a good fun evening, where a lot of money was raised through the participation of villagers, it is great that Horsham Responders have put the money back into the village and that this vital device is situated here at the Village Hall”.

Mannings Heath Village Hall is used by a variety of local groups on a daily basis and is a popular local venue. In addition, the adjacent Village Green is home to Nuthurst Cricket Club and is a focal point for families and dog walkers.

Mannings Heath resident and Horsham Community Responder, Ali Harmer, said: “Responders are now looking to hold a short course in the village hall on CPR and defibrillator use as soon as possible for those who are interested”.

Grab your golf clubs for hospice golf challenge Grab your golf bag and head to the first tee for New Horizons Appeal and Rusper Golf Club’s Charity Golf Challenge in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Taking place on Thursday 7 September 2017 at Rusper Golf Club, Rusper Road, Newdigate, keen golfers are invited to get together in teams of four to play for Linda’s Trophy, named after Linda Catlow, who was cared for

by St Catherine’s. For the last six years, Linda’s family have run golf events in her memory and raised more than £35,000 for the local hospice.

This year’s charity golf challenge starts with a Shotgun start at 9.30am and includes coffee on arrival and a buffet lunch. The Texas Scramble format, will allow golfers of all abilities to try their luck on the golf course. The challenge is a great chance to show off your golfing skills and socialise with others who enjoy golf, whilst supporting a local hospice.

Suzanne Connor, New Horizons Appeal Co-ordinator, said: “By supporting this charity golf day, you’ll be helping St Catherine’s

continue to be there to provide expert end of life care and support to people living with a terminal illness when life comes full circle.

Charles Chipperfield Circus comes to town Chipperfield’s Circus will be coming to Horsham park from Tuesday 22nd August until Monday 28th August.

The Chipperfield Circus is a long-running English family show based on the 300-year-old Chipperfield dynasty.

Chipperfield’s Circus started with James Chipperfield with his performing animals at the Thames Frost Fair of 1684.

Through the 19th century, the circus toured the all of England, with a menagerie of animals, teams of acrobats and clowns. After World War II, under the management of Jimmy Chipperfield, the show became one of the biggest circuses in Europe, with a tent that could hold 6000 people. Jimmy Chipperfield then diversified into safari parks and fairgrounds supplies, and since his death in 1990,

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Hawth auditions for Juvenile Ensemble The Hawth, in partnership with Evolution Pantomimes, are on a search for local, talented girls to be part of the Juvenile Ensemble for their spectacular pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which runs at The Hawth from Friday 8 December 2017 – Sunday 7 January 2018.

Chosen girls will star alongside Stephen Mulhern in what promises to be a fantastic Christmas

show.

Auditionees must be between 9-15 years inclusive on 1 Sept 2017 and no taller than 5’2”.

The auditions will take place at The Hawth on Sunday 3 September. There is no need to preregister, registration will begin at 2pm and the auditions usually last about two hours.

There are chaperones to look after the children, so parents

needn’t stay after registration.

Children should bring water, wear comfortable clothing (and soft/ dance shoes) and be ready to learn a routine on the day.

Successful dancers will be required to commit fully to the pantomime for the duration of the pantomime run, including the two weeks prior to opening.

Top travelling tips for holidaying with your dog

It’s summer and for many that means it’s time for a holiday – the chance to spend quality time together with loved ones in the sunshine and recharge those batteries.

While we look forward to getting away often this excitement can be overshadowed by the thought of leaving behind our pet dogs. But you needn’t think going abroad means you can’t take your furry canine family member with you. It’s easier than you think to take your dog abroad, meaning they don’t have to miss out on the family fun.

There are a few important things to remember to ensure you and your four legged traveller have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Siobhan Griffin, Veterinary Nurse and Learning and Development Executive and from Lintbells, manufacturers of premium natural pet supplements, has put together a list of top tips to make sure your holidays goes without a hitch: Do your research Although you can now take your dog to many countries with ease it is still important to check out the country you’re visiting as rules and requirements can vary from place to place. Don’t leave it until

the last minute to pick your destination, do your research within plenty of time and consult your vet to make sure you and your pooch have everything required to safely enter the country. It’s also important to research your accommodation to make sure they will accept dogs, whether it be a hotel, apartment or caravan.

Plan ahead Planning your transport is another must, check the company you are travelling with will accept pets for travel and how many, if you are planning to take more than one. Some companies may also require proof that your canine companion is fit and healthy for travel, either in the form of a letter from your vet or their pet passport.

Pet passports A passport for your pooch is one of the most important things you will need to organise before your trip. To go in and out of the UK you will need an EU Pet Passport, this needs to be sourced from a government-authorised vet known as a Local Veterinary Inspector (LVI). Sections I-V of the passport needs to be filled in by your vet detailing your pet’s vaccination records and evidence of their microchip.

Microchip For identification purposes your dog must be microchipped before your holiday, this is also now a legal requirement in the UK, this can be done by your vet. This must be done before they get a rabies vaccination, and you will need to record this microchip number in your pet passport.

Vaccinations You must ensure your four legged friend has a rabies vaccination before any travel, along with a tapeworm treatment before coming back into the UK. Tick treatments also need to be up to date, as they can pass on dangerous diseases to your dog and this risk can be much higher when travelling. Depending on where you are travelling to you may also want to research mosquito and fly protection for your pooch. It’s important to consult your vet before any travel, to make sure your dog is fully protected, as different countries will have different requirements.

Get an authorised pet travel carrier Once everything is sorted and you are ready to begin your big adventure there are a few things to remember whilst you are travelling. Make sure you have an authorised pet travel carrier so your pet is safe and secure during your journey. If you are travelling by car your pet will either need to be in a crate or have a car harness or dog seat belt attached.

Watch the temperature Keep an eye on the temperature; never leave your dog your dog in a hot car. When you reach your destination country it may be much warmer than your dog is used to so remember to make sure your dog is cool enough, and take regular breaks to ensure they can have a drink and go to the toilet.

Keep calm and carry on If your dog is prone to sickness or anxiety during travel you can speak to your vet before you go who can advise on the best treatments to combat this. You can prepare your dog for a trip by taking a calming supplement such as YuCALM, by Lintbells, at least three weeks in advance. This can help your pooch to become a happier and calmer traveller. A fast acting digestive supplement such as YuDIGEST PLUS can also be a benefit to your pooch, as it can support any digestive upsets that may be caused by the stress of a new environment and/or different foods.

Why not hold a purr-fect picnic this summer and help raise money for the RSPCA. This Summer, roll out the picnic blanket to help animals in need by holding your own RSPCA Great Big Picnic.

Whether you are a baking enthusiast, or can just about make an edible sandwich, the picnic is all about getting family, friends and furry companions together for some fun in the sun.

Katie Sutcliffe, RSPCA events manager, said: “While school’s out, it’s the perfect time to get the picnic blankets out and spend quality time with the kids enjoying your favourite treats.

“The RSPCA can help plan the perfect picnic to raise money for animals in need and while you enjoy your sandwiches in the sun, you’ll be helping us continue with our work to improve the lives of animals everywhere.”

The RSPCA relies entirely on donations to do its vital work rescuing rehabilitating and rehoming animals.

Across the centres in June there were 3,260 dogs and 9,832 cats taken into care, more than 1,000 rabbits and nearly 500 horses. The RSPCA 24-hour cruelty hotline has received more than 500,000 this year so far.

Katie continued: “We need your help now as much as ever and getting friends together for some cake and sandwiches is a simple but fun way to help the charity continue this vital work.”

August Bank Holiday is the

ideal time to have a picnic but they can be held anytime and anywhere.

Free posters, bunting, invites, cake flags and recipes ara available to download upon registering your picnic with the RSPCA. The fundraising pack also includes face masks to colour in for children, an RSPCAthemed quiz and lots of fun ideas to do on the day.

Why not hold a competition for the best decorated cake or cupcake, collect donations to guess the weight of the cake or the number of sweets in the jar, or have a game of Tug o’ War or even an egg and spoon race.

Share the memories by posting a picture of your pawsome picnic using the hashtag #RSPCAPicnic All the money raised from donations and games can be paid online through the website and will go straight to helping animals in need.

The donations will help the RSPCA continue to rescue, rehome and rehabilitate animals in desperate need of care.

Raising £60 could help provide enough food, shelter and bedding for a rescued dog for a week.

Raising £120 could help pay for a pet to be microchipped, vaccinated and treated so they’re ready for their new fur-ever home.

The welcome result redressed Horsham’s chequered start to the season when they won four friendly warm ups and lost two, before coming unstuck in their first league match, at Molesey. For the Shoreham game Manager Dom di Paola rang the changes, utilis-

ing Horsham’s strength in depth.

Shoreham – the Musselmen – might have scored in the opening minutes but Horsham keeper Michael Hunter denied them.

Horsham responded with four unrewarded attempts – two Rob O’Toole headers, a Ross Myers shot and a Scott Kirkwood strike. However, a Horsham goal soon followed when Toby House was bundled off the ball allowing Kirkwood to give them the lead from the penalty spot. Horsham were in command and had an opportunity to double their score before the break, only for Shoreham keeper Broadbent to clear Kirkwood’s strike.

The second half opened with further Horsham pressure, but

O’Toole’s shot against his former team went over the bar and a powerful Darren Budd blast went wide. But, Horsham’s second goal soon arrived when House fired in O’Toole’s supply from close range.

Then, midway through the half, Horsham made certain of victory when a clearance found substitute Darren Boswell who clattered a thirty yarder into the back of the goal. Hard-working O’Toole deserved a goal himself but was thwarted when his response to a James Thurgar cross was deflected away for a corner. Although Shoreham kept searching for a consolation they failed to maximise when given the chance, their weak shot presenting little problem.

After exiting the FA Cup at the first stage and being well beaten in the league away to Pagham – shipping in six goals in the process without scoring themselves - YM needed to regroup and by the end of the game against East Preston there was a clear sign that the team was gelling together. Following the visitors’ free kick onto the top netting, Sam Schaff broke through unaccompanied for YM and when a persistent attack was not cleared Dave Brown opened the scoring from close range in the fifth minute. Then a YM corner came to nought before East Preston pressure enabled Jared Rance to equalise half way through the first session. Aaron Jeal in the YM goal had to save with his feet ahead of East Preston blazing over and having their corner negated.

Next, Phil Johnson went on two lone forays for YM but a prone Charlie Cooke header was needed to keep the scores level, three late YM corners going unconverted as the half ended one apiece. Energised YM came out fighting on the

resumption, a Phil Johnson one on one was unrewarded, though, amid repeated home attacks. East Preston were still in the game and Jeal had to grab a high cross and pull off a diving save, but, after YM substitutions Johnson ran through with the keeper stranded to restore the hosts’ lead. He then put the result beyond doubt with another goal late in the half. East Preston hit the woodwork and fired over, but YM were not to be denied, fully deserving their first three points of the season, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “I’ve been toying with different formations in the previous two games but it game together well tonight and we had a great second half. Unfortunately we haven’t got a game on Saturday, but we’ll be training hard before we meet Worthing United in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup at Gorings Mead on Tuesday evening.” Meanwhile, spectators’ Man of the Match Phil Johnson said: “Phew - that was hard work, but we got there in the end!” YM resume league action on Saturday week (26th) with a visit to Lancing.

Rob Andrew, CEO of Sussex County Cricket Club and David Bowden, Chairman of the Sussex Cricket Foundation – the governing body of the game across the county - came to Horsham Cricket Club for an open meeting with local clubs.

The meeting, run by Gary Stanley of the Foundation’s Adult Leagues Group, was to discuss the strategy for county-wide recreational league cricket.

Attendees were provided with suggestions of how the league might be restructured in one pyramid with the Sussex Premier League at its pinnacle. The Horsham consultative meeting was the ninth of ten across Sussex, Gary explaining: “Action needs to be taken to address the poor retention rate of players and to come up with a mutually acceptable format to restrict undue travelling to away games, Sussex being a broad county from east to west. With some 150 clubs fielding around 340 teams, finalising a new structure presents a major challenge, but we are eager to find out what the clubs want so that we can make recommendations to the Sussex Board. Some clubs want a quick introduction of the changes, while others would prefer to take a little more time to consider what will be proposed. This is not a straightforward business, so we are working towards having the recommendations ready to present by next March with the intention of

introducing the new format for the 2019 season – that will give us the opportunity to consider comments and representations from clubs once they have seen firmer proposals.” Rob Andrew said: “Doing nothing is not an option, all sports – not just cricket – are having to get to grips with lifestyle issues affecting player availability. We need to be proactive to manage the pace of change. There is a team sport problem with players dropping out at 16 and cricket is a less sociable game now, with players keen to get away earlier.” Gary Stanley added: “We want to introduce a free flowing approach, with, apart from the Premier League, a format based on the geographical location of clubs. Every county is starting work on this basis and one or two have done something similar already, with customary promotion and relegation in accordance with results achieved. Clearly this is not a simple operation and the placement groups – all with sound knowledge of the county’s cricket leagues - will be sensitive towards consultations on where clubs should fit in within the set up to be mooted at the end of the exercise. The aim is to come up with a flexible format reflecting the appropriate level of each team and we encourage clubs to contribute towards the process. It is probable that it will take a season or two to develop the new structure in the light of how it beds down.”

Although Southwater did not charge away from the starting blocks, they reached 31-1 without hint of impending disaster, but soon crashed to 38-6. There was a partial recovery but once Johann Brouwer was out for 23 it was an uphill struggle with only Morgan Gilmore and James Skett reaching double figures. Phil Marshall

took 4-12 and all-rounder Ben Williams 2-6, while busy fielder Shaka Shambrook – who organised the day – his son Dan Shambrook and Dilshan de Silva snaffled one apiece, a run out accounting for the other victim as Southwater subsided for an inadequate 78. Billingshurst set off in hot pursuit, Adam Goacher treating the sizeable crown to a classic T20 innings, scoring at will with fours and sixes around the ground and hitting the winning runs with a boundary to the town end to finish with an unbeaten 57 off 36 balls The six wicket win in just 10 overs, was Billingshurst’s fourth victory in the competition, which was inaugurated in 1959.

James West said: “I’m more than happy with that – it was a good Horsham wicket, so after winning the toss and electing to bat Southwater would have been looking to post 140 or 150. But,

our opening bowlers did well and it was great to see my brother Dan pouch an excellent catch at short midwicket.” In his previous innings Adam Goacher made 99 and this season he has scored fifties for Horsham’s seconds and thirds and sixties for the club’s Thursday side. A beaming 16 year old Adam said: “I feel in good nick, so I would have batted the same way however many we were chasing.

It was a very flat pitch – I’m glad I kept wicket and didn’t have to bowl on it. It was brilliant to bat on and I was timing everything well from the start.” Presenting the cup, Horsham’s David Horsman, doyen of the competition, thanked Loraine Skett and Sam Frankland for scoring, Tom Hogsflesh and Bob Daisley for umpiring and, especially, Richard Marshall for preparing the ground so well.

Horsham thrash lowly Brighton again Saturday August 12 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 199 All Out (49.4 overs) Brighton & Hove 54 All Out (21.3) Horsham won by 145 runs – Horsham 30 points, Brighton 10 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Brighton have seen enough of Horsham – in April Horsham knocked them out of the Sussex Cup and in June at Cricketfield Road they crushed them in the league after bowling them out for just 123 (and they skittled them for 135 last season, too).

And, last Saturday the seasiders’ batting frailty was even more apparent as they crashed to ignominious defeat again. Put in, minus David Croshaw, who suffered a warm up injury, Horsham

made 199-9 with just two balls of their 50 over allocation unused.

Ryan Maskell’s 38 enabled Horsham to get to 72-1, skipper Michael Thornely following up with 66, including 5 fours and 4 sixes, but Liam Ward (28) and Michael Munday (10 not out) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures. However, their 43 run last wicket stand allowed Horsham to set a demanding target. Replying, depleted Brighton started badly and then got worse, Mika Ekstrom bowled both openers and then took two further wickets, finishing with 4-16, and there was to be no recovery from 29-6. Guy Williamson top-scored with 11, extras on 9 being the joint second highest contribution as Michael Munday finished Brighton off for a miserable 54, with 2-3 in 21 balls. Horsham’s overseas player Ekstrom told the District Post:

“We got off to a steady start but then lost wickets before Thorns picked us up. The wicket was slow and there was movement, so we thought around 170 was par and were pretty happy between the innings. I just pitched it up and bowled straight, which worked fine, and we fielded well, Tom Clark pulling off a great run out from backward point.” Brighton are eighth on 211 points, ahead of relegation candidates Ansty (138) and Bexhill, 124, Ansty leapfrogging Bexhill after beating them at the Polegrove last Saturday, their first league win. Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham, now third with 292 points, return home for the penultimate time this season - to welcome beleaguered Bexhill - whom they beat by 2 wickets in a low scoring game at the coast in June, Michael Munday taking 8-38.

After three abandonments, Roffey finally completed a game - with a resounding win, in a 50 over game - against fourth- placed Cuckfield, the only team to have beaten them in the league this season.

Roffey prefer chasing but, inserted, they laid a sound platform with Rohit Jagota going well and coach Simon Fearnley saying: “If we can get to 250 we’ll be able to put them under pressure.” The score had doubled after 20 overs, but then slowed when batsmen departed after promising starts and, at 182-5 with 10 overs remaining, both sides were very much in the game. Jagota, though, was batting serenely with a century beckoning - until he was adjudged LBW for a highly impressive 90, containing 12 languid boundaries. Usman Khan then picked up the momentum with 25 accompanying Josh Fleming, who made a rapid 36, featuring Roffey’s sole maximum. During another exceptional Roffey tea, Jagota said: “It isn’t easy out there – the wicket has a greenish tinge and the ball is coming

through at varying heights, so if they can get 238 then fair play to them.” Cuckfield coach Chris Waller added: “It depends how we bat! We’ve got a great pair of openers (New Zealand test batsman Jeet Raval and former Horsham player Joe Ludlow), but they haven’t been doing so well lately.” Ludlow soon departed LBW to Leigh Harrison, commenting: “I missed a straight one, so I can’t complain” - other dismissed batsmen were less content. After 20 overs Cuckfield were 85-3, including, crucially the wicket of the rampant Raval, for an excellent 56, but then Roffey did what they do so well – bottle up the opposition with tight bowling and fielding.

There was a 53 run stand for the sixth wicket but progress was slow and when Abdul Khan came on the urgent need for runs saw him bowl four batsmen, the end coming quickly with Cuckfield falling well short. Roffey skipper Matt Davies told us: “Everyone chipped in and Abdul finished them off – he’s got a tricky action to pick up. We’ve just got to keep on winning and hope that we can overtake Grinstead.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Roffey travel to Hastings (sixth), whom they thrashed at home in June, bowling them out for 100, while after also winning last Saturday, Grinstead (who have had kinder weather of late and, with 364 points, lead Roffey by 19) go to doomed Ansty.

Horsham Ladies appoint impressive new coach Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies have appointed a new coach with impeccable credentials – Chris Bowen, current Hockey Performance Director at Reigate Grammar School.

Chris represented South Africa at U16, U18 and U21 level before earning 48 caps for the Welsh National Team. He was voted Player of the Year at both Holcombe and Hammersmith & Westminster and has played for Surbiton Men’s 1st XI in the National League Premier Division and European Hockey League. Coaching a number of junior championship winning teams as Hockey Development Officer at Whitgift School is also on his CV, prior to being Head of Hockey at Epsom College. Chris has an MSc in Sports Pyschology, a qualification he uses on a consultancy basis, and is a member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science in addition to the British Psychological Society.
