Council congratulates West Sussex pupils on GCSE results

Pupils from Tanbridge House School

West Sussex County Council congratulated the county’s pupils as they received their GCSE results last Thursday (24 August). For the first time, students in England sat the new style, tougher, English Literature, English Language and Maths GCSEs. These new style GCSEs use a numerical grade system, from 9-1, with 9 being the highest.

Under the new system, grades 7-9 are equivalent to an A or A*, whilst grades 4 and above are considered a pass and 5 plus, a ‘strong pass’. Students have, therefore, received a mixture of number and letter grades this year. The majority of subjects will adopt the number reporting by 2019. According to early reports

provided by West Sussex schools where results can be compared, they are similar to last year’s, despite the changes. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Richard Burrett, said: “The county’s GCSE results are testament to the hard work of pupils and staff, and I would like to congratulate everyone on their achievements.

“With last week’s strong A Level results, there is certainly a lot for schools to celebrate this summer. “As a council, we remain committed to ensuring pupils in West Sussex receive the best possible education and we look forward to continuing to work closely with schools in the future.” Students who do not get the grades they hoped for should

Gallery this month. These eleven posters have an air of mystery about them. They don’t date from the same time, they span nearly two years of advertising campaigns – so they were deliberately collected. They must have come from America, but were found abandoned in a roof space in a small village on the Sussex Surrey boarder in a cardboard tube – edges frayed, with the odd tear. Fortunately, the new owner of the Rudgwick house donated them for

conservation and display in this commemorative exhibition at the museum. From the dark and sinister tones of John Norton and Walter H. Everett’s designs, to the bright and patriotic images of Howard Chandler Christy and Gerrit A. Beneker’s work, see the amazing variety of posters produced as part of the war effort and Liberty Loan campaign. With eye-catching illustrations, bold graphic design and gallant statements, these posters truly capture a snapshot of the collective effort of American citizens throughout the Great War, and are complimentary to Horsham Museum’s collection of British war time posters, which reveal the collective strength and energy of those on the Home Front supporting the war effort. View striking government appeals for volunteers for the army, an order to extinguish lights and even an appeal for blankets for soldiers and an unusual poster warning against conscription. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the propaganda campaign that enthralled public life, both in the United States and Great Britain! Exhibition open between Saturday 9 September and Saturday 14 October 2017. Free Admission. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Farlington students jump for joy Farlington School pupils were left jumping for joy on results day last week. Ms Louise Higson, Farlington School’s Headmistress, commented on the School’s GCSE results: “Congratulations to the Year 11 girls at Farlington on their excellent GCSE examination results! We are delighted with their performance; these brilliant results are no

less than the girls deserve and are a reflection of their hard work and desire to succeed. “My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers; their passion and commitment are key in providing the excellent teaching and support which enables the girls to achieve outstanding results across a broad range of subjects.”

Christ’s Hospital School has announced that it is “absolutely delighted with the 2017 (I)GCSE exam results that reflect over 86.7% of all grades at A*-B”. This is an improvement on last year’s impressive results (85.6%). 30.4% of this year’s grades awarded were at A*, with 63.1% at A grade or above and in the core subjects of Maths, English and the Sciences. These strong results saw 25 pupils gain 10 A grades or better and some brilliant individual per-

formances: Marley Bell achieved an amazing 11A*s and 1A; Luke Watts achieved an impressive 10A*s and 1A; Maria Howard achieved 9A*s and 4As; Eugene Ting achieved 9A*s and 2As; Flora Thwaites 9A*s, 1A and 1B; Helena Walsh and Edith Thompson both achieved 9A*s and 1B; Lydia Thornhill, Freya O’Brien and Dara Kuteyi achieved 8A*s and 2As. In Maths, Music and Latin, over 80% of grades were at A* or A and the three Sciences averaged 70% A* or A grades.

“It is an elegant reflection of our pupils’ tenacity and their teachers’ professionalism and support that many of our (I)GCSE pupils achieved these results, particularly given that many have faced adversity in their young lives” said Simon Reid, Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital, “I send my warmest congratulations to our Year 11 (GE) pupils, their parents and teachers. I could not be prouder of these achievements.”

The Towers Convent School in Henfield Road, Upper Beeding, are celebrating another successful year of results. Mrs Clare Trelfa, Headmistress, announced a 97% A* to C passrate, with 44% of the grades at A* and A, at a time when there has been great concern across the country regarding a drop in exam results. “The recipe for their success is as follows: hard working pupils working closely with dedicated

staff, who want nothing but the very best for them. This unbeatable combination encourages Towers pupils to think big and follow their dreams” said Mrs Trelfa, “We are immensely proud of each and every one of them but particular mention goes to: Holly Gardner and Charlotte Sutherland, both with 7 subjects at A* and 3 at grade 9 as well as an A in Additional Mathematics and Harriet Francis, who achieved 6 A*s, 1 A and 3 subjects at grade 9 as well

as a B in Additional Mathematics. “Not only have the girls secured some outstanding GCSE results, with a group of keen mathematicians also achieving extremely impressive grades in the Freestanding Additional Maths Level 3 examination, but 13% of the pupils’ grades in English literature, Language and mathematics were grade 9, which is being hailed as superior to an A*. Huge congratulations to our pupils and staff!”

Millais students walk away with impressive results

Last Thursday saw Millais Year 11 students walk away with impressive results. Dr Alison Lodwick, headmistress at the school, gave the following statement: “We are delighted to be celebrating yet another year of exceptional performance at Millais. Despite the greater rigour and challenge of the new GCSEs in English and Mathematics, we have excelled with excellent examination results which reflects the tremendous commitment and hard work of the students and staff. The measurement of progress is a key benchmark at GCSE through

Attainment 8 and Progress 8. At Attainment 8 our students achieved an average of 58.2 which is equivalent to grade B across their 8 best subject results. It is likely that the average Progress 8 result will be 0.49 which means that the cohort achieved half a grade above national expectation in each of their best 8 subjects. In terms of traditional measures, 87% of students achieved a standard pass (grade 4 or above) in both English Language and Mathematics and 70% achieved a strong pass (grade 5 or above) in both. Whilst 54% of our students achieved the English Baccalaureate (strong

passes in English & Mathematics, A*-C in Science, a Modern Language and History or Geography). The remarkable achievement across all subjects is reflected in the 37% of the cohort achieving 5+ A*- A which is tremendous. There are absolutely outstanding individual results too as Ellie Hutchinson, Ella Spilling and Madeline Carey achieved the equivalent of 11A*’s across the board. Regardless of the increase of challenge presented by the new GCSEs in English and Mathematics, 8.4% of our cohort scored a 9 which is more than double the national average. Ella Spilling deserves particular mention as she is amongst only 2,000 students nationally who achieved a 9 in English Language, English Literature and Mathematics. Every year we strive to live up to the reputation we have established for ourselves as one of the highest performing (non-selective) state schools in the country and these results maintain that standard of excellence. This has been an outstanding year of which to be very proud. Students were absolutely thrilled when they collected their well-deserved results as were parents and their teachers that all the hard work had been richly rewarded. Congratulations to each and every one of our Year 11 students who should be proud of their achievements.”

Tanbridge School confirm another year of exam success Tanbridge House School is delighted to confirm another set of excellent GCSE results. The new ’Progress 8’ measure is ‘significantly positive’ (+0.68) and whilst the school must wait to verify it against national data, it is likely that student progress will be deemed ‘outstanding’. 79% of students achieved 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths. Jules White, Headteacher,

said: “I would like to congratulate the students on their hard work and wish them every happiness for the future. The support of their families has also been valued and appreciated. “The commitment, skill and dedication of all my colleagues at Tanbridge House School has paid off again and I remain extremely grateful for the excellence of their work.”

Great turn out for Billingshurst Flower Show Bank holiday bliss at Skylark

Billingshurst Horticultural Society held its Annual Flower Show at the Billingshurst Centre on Saturday 19 August. The Show attracted 57 exhibitors with over 400 entries across 135 classes in horticulture, floral art, cookery, handicrafts, photography and junior sections. Entry numbers in horticulture were less than usual, due to several major exhibitors being unable to attend. However, there were still lots to see in the Main Hall. Karl Sawyer won the John Kingston Memorial Trophy for best Horticultural exhibit in the Show,

a splendid entry of aubergines. Karl had a memorable day, winning the Renton Trophy for man with most points. He also claimed 4 other horticultural awards: The Wally Wicks Trophy, the Open Cup, the Bush Memorial Cup and the Banksian Medal. Sheila Leaney dominated in the floral sections, winning 3 trophies including the Ladies Cup. Sheila was also awarded a Diploma of Merit for a fine vase of cut flowers. Gordon Price excelled in the Floral Art classes winning the Puttock Memorial Cup and a diploma for “Shades of one Colour”. The Men Only class

“Gardeners World” proved exhibitors watched the BBC programme, as Monty Don’s dog, Nigel, featured in the arrangements. Cookery was well represented, with 71 entries. Cake and tea bread classes were particularly popular. The Coronation Cup for most points was won by Ro Jennings. The range and quality of the craftwork was as impressive as ever with 58 entries. The Renton Award for most craft points was retained by Julia Ralph. Paintings, needlework and a varied collection of greeting cards were particularly fine. The photography section is always well supported and the best entry was an action shot by Ray Chick of two racehorses going “Over the Jumps”. Ray went on to win The Photography Cup for most points in Show. The entries from children, though not abundant in numbers, featured some charming exhibits in cookery and craft. A striking floral art depiction of “Over the Rainbow” by Adam Skinner was a worthy winner. The Nursery Class of 5 years and under featured flower designs on paper plates and enticed a two year old to have a go! Adam Skinner, age 12, was the overall winner of the Junior Cup. A memorable feature this year was 4 generations of one family entering, well done Peggy Spiller, daughter Bridget, granddaughter Charlotte and great grandsons Harry and Barty.”

Spot the signs of an asthma attack early

The school summer holiday has sadly come to an end, and now that children are back in school it’s important that parents of children with asthma keep an eye out for the early warning signs of an asthma attack. Children are at a much greater risk of having an asthma attack when they’re back at school, partly due to exposure to triggers, such as cold and flu viruses. In fact, the latest hospital admissions

data showed children were 1.7 times more likely to be rushed to hospital, following an asthma attack, in September than in August. Every 10 seconds someone has a potentially lifethreatening asthma attack in the UK, and three people die from asthma every day, so it’s important for parents to spot the signs of an asthma attack early. You should book an urgent appointment with the GP or asthma nurse if your child is: using their reliever inhaler (usually blue) more than three times a week; coughing or wheezing at night; feeling out of breath and struggling to keep up with their friends. Parents who have any concerns about their child’s asthma can speak to expert nurses by calling the Asthma UK Helpline on 0300 222 5800 (Mon-Fri; 9am-5pm), and can find more information on how to protect their child when they’re back in school this August by visiting https:// www.asthma.org.uk/back-toschool

Young men trek 180km across Sussex in aid of Classrooms for Kenya

On Monday 14 August five friends from Sussex set off on a six-day trek, from Winchester to Eastbourne, in aid of a charity which builds permanent schools for children in Kenya. The 180km trek along the South Downs was the brainchild of former Weald School pupil Alex Hammond, who had been inspired by his school’s sixth form field expedition to Africa in support of the charity, Classrooms for Kenya. “It was an amazing trip” said Alex, “We had some incredible

experiences which inspired me to do more.” Alex was joined on his inspirational charity walk by wingman Sam Lucas, fellow 1st Shipley Scout leaders, Christopher Sutton and Tom Coad, and 1st Shipley Scout Explorer, Richard Hewitt. The intrepid quintet set off together from Winchester with the intention to raise much-needed funds for the worthy cause, while having fun at the same time. The route, although beautiful, is very challenging with undulating terrain along the way. This

then culminates in the final stage over the Seven Sisters into Eastbourne. Alex explained: “I think it is fair to say the walk was probably more challenging than we had expected. By the end of day two some of the team were suffering from severe blisters, and had to get them fixed before they could re-join the adventure. “With the aid of a small amount of rest and countless blister plasters, the team spirit never faltered and everyone who started in Winchester finished with me on the pier on Saturday. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who took part.” The team enjoyed a celebratory fish and chip supper on Eastbourne Pier on Saturday, to mark six amazing days of fun and adventure. Alex, who is very keen to raise as much money as he can for the charity, plans to revisit Kenya next year to help build new classrooms. Anyone wishing to support this incredible cause can donate on Alex’s fundraising page at Virgin Money Giving: http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ southdownshikeclassrooms4kenya For more details, please visit: www.classroomsforkenya.org.uk

Age UK Horsham District calls out for votes to bag a share of bag fund Age UK Horsham District is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - being awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Age UK Horsham District is one of the groups on the shortlist. The aim of their project ‘helping local, lonely older people’ is to reduce severe loneliness and isolation amongst older people living in Horsham District. According to the charity: “Statistics show that over half a million people over 60 in the UK usually spend every day alone. A further half a million go at least 5 days every week without seeing or speaking to anyone. It is estimated that around 1,675 older people in Horsham District are lonely. Loneliness among older people is often due to the loss of a partner, becoming housebound or lack of access to services, such as transport.

Voting is open in all Tesco stores throughout September and October. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop. You can vote for Age UK Horsham District at the following stores: Tesco Extra Broadbridge Heath, Tesco Esso Express Redkiln Way Horsham and Tesco Express Brighton Road Horsham. Want to know the secret of a successful business? This month our Award Winning business expert Janette Whitney shares the best kept secret of business success Many People will have heard the terms Business Consultant or Management consultant, but few fully understand what they are, much less what they can potentially do for a small or growing business. It is assumed by many small business owners that Business Consultants are the things of big businesses or major corporations, but recruiting the right Business Consultant can help a small business gain experience, knowledge, contacts and ideas as well as constructive criticism- all of which cannot fail to be of value to a company regardless of its size. So what are the benefits? Been there, done it! An experienced business consultant can fill a gap in a small business owners experience or can add industry knowledge of a specific sector the business is targeting. A good Business Consultant will be an experienced business person with a respected background who has probably helped a number of businesses find their feet, grow or survive tough times. Think outside of the box:

Business

got a story? email us at newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk

A business consultant does not work with a business full-time and won’t be concerned with day to day issues, but will instead look at the bigger picture. What is the direction of the business? Are targets being met? What environmental changes might affect the business? Which competitors to watch out for and what are the plans to keep ahead? Impartiality: A business consultant does not work with the business day to day, does not engage in office politics and retains their independence. In addition the consultant will have witnessed changes sweep over the business sector in the past, which means they are able to advise with confidence and recommend unbiased decisions in the interests of the business. Connections: A successful business is a connected one, usually through networking. However for a small business it can be time consuming and can often prove difficult to build a trusted network of contacts. A business consultant can usually offer an address book of relevant contacts to go along with their own experience. This could be a supplier, distributor or potential customer to help boost business or a potential partner to add a new dimension to your business. In summary the benefits of working with an experience Business Consultant are:

-Provides business expertise that can far outweigh the costs -Adds credibility and strengthens the management team (especially helpful to gain funding) -Will be a sounding board for the MD or CEO -Assists with growth and raising the company profile -Brings years of experience to bear when looking at proposed business plans -Can provide crucial guidance at critical stages of a business -Fill particular skills gaps which the owners of a young company may have. Madama Butterfly and Tosca at The Hawth

The Russian State Opera present two of Puccini’s best loved operas Madama Butterfly and Tosca at The Hawth this month. Madama Butterfly, one of Giacomo Puccini’s most popular operas, will be staged on Tuesday 12 September. Set in Japan at the turn

of the century, Madame Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic of all operas, telling the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride, whose selfsacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy. The compelling tale of Madama Butterfly contains some of the most beautiful arias written, One Fine Day and Love Duet, as well as the Humming Chorus have been popular with opera-goers for over a century. On Wednesday 13 September, the company present a beautiful production of the greatest opera classic, Tosca. Originally set in Rome in 1800s, this melodrama, where love and politics collide, and murder takes place at the highest level, tells the story of two idealis-

tic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi. Their trust is set to be tested by Scarpia, the ruthless police officer who has no boundaries. Scarpia has sentenced Cavaradossi to death. The officer is prepared to let Cavaradossi go if Tosca is willing to spend the night with him… Two of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time, both Madama Butterfly and Tosca feature a live orchestra, with over 30 musicians, and are sung in Italian with English Surtitles. Performance: Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 September. Tickets: £34 (Discounts £32.50) or book to see both operas for £59, available from the Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: hawth.co.uk

The resilience of the property market has once again been highlighted by new figures that show asking prices are continuing to rise. Rightmove’s latest House Price Index reveals the average price of a property coming to the market this month is 3.1 per cent higher than in August 2016. It comes after statistics for July noted a 2.8 per cent annual hike in asking prices. The index highlights a number of regional variations, with several counties identified as currently enjoying an annual hike in house prices of more than double the national average. The three most prosperous markets are named as Northamptonshire (a 9.1 per cent increase in the last year), Derbyshire (7.9 per cent) and Norfolk (7.4 per cent). Kevin Shaw, national sales director at estate agents Leaders, says: “These figures, which are backed up by our own findings, clearly demonstrate the resilience of the housing market after last year’s historic Brexit vote. “With the London market now well beyond the reach of many buyers, we have seen a definite ripple effect to the more affordable regions that have good transport links to either the capital or other large cities and towns. Rightmove noted August is a typically slow month for the property market, with buyers and sellers often having holiday distractions, but the average asking price now stands at a healthy £313,663. For more information or advice on putting your home on the market contact your local Leaders branch or visit leaders.co.uk.

Inside the property the potential purchaser is likely to be surprised by the light and space while being pleased with the refitted bathroom suite and kitchen. In addition, the lease is large and was extended to 999 years in September 2002. This

property is being sold with no ongoing chain and would provide an ideal opportunity for both investors and first time buyers alike. An internal viewing is highly recommended to appreciate the size and location of this property. Contact Chesworths Estates on 01403 255420

Lively YMCA win comfortably at Lancing forced onto the defensive, Lewis Finney reduced the deficit to 3-2 before the break. As the hot afternoon took its toll, the fast and furious pace of the first half reduced, bringing fewer goal scoring chances and YM made substitutions – Luke Gedling being replaced by Joe Shelley and Ollie Gill taking over from Schaaf, who suffered a nasty looking injury. Gill soon made his presence felt when he fired home in the 69th minute. The two goal cushion gave YM licence to

Saturday August 26 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Lancing 2 4 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter With the game being filmed by Latest TV for their local station, YMCA notched up an impressive win, continuing in the same productive vein as the previous Tuesday when they put five goals past Worthing in the second round of the Peter Bentley Cup.

On the 3G pitch at Lancing’s Culver Road ground YM had two goals in the net within the first ten minutes – first, Dave Brown opened the scoring after taking advantage of the static opposition defence, then, Sam Schaaf repeated the dose. But, five minutes later, Lancing responded with a Luke Donaldson goal. YM, though, were keen to restore their two goal lead and, with pressure creating opportunities, Sam Schaaf scored again mid way through the first half. However, Lancing were clearly up for the fight and, with YM

I’m delighted with our dominant start and our convincing second half attack, but, despite their best efforts, they were unable to add to their score. Commenting on YM’s comfortable 4-2 win, Manager Peter Buckland said: “I’m delighted with our dominant start – and our convincing second half, when we controlled the game for long periods. Sam Schaaf’s injury is a concern, though – as we saw today, his excellent two goal contribution was key to our success and he’ll be a big loss if we have to be without him.”

Battling YMCA shaded by Three Bridges in close call Tuesday August 29 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Div Horsham YMCA 1 2 Three Bridges Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After impressive league wins against East Preston and Lancing and a eliminating Worthing with a strong cup win, YM were in good, confident form when they welcomed Three Bridges back to Gorings Mead, only for Bridges to run out winners again, as they had done in the FA Cup earlier in August. YM, were,

We did enough to get something from this game and there are good things to take from it though, unlucky not to at least share the points. The end to end start saw both keepers in action, Aaron Jeal running out to catch and clear a Bridges attack before Dave Brown tested Martin Grant in the Bridges goal. With both defences under pressure, Bridges broke away for Bradley Peters to put them ahead from close

range in the 30th minute after evading the YM back line. But, seven minutes later, after Jeal had saved another Nathan Crabb strike, Ollie Gill maintained his goal scoring run, equalising for YM after opening up the Bridges defence. Resuming on one apiece Gill immediately latched onto a loose ball, but to no avail, then Bridges had a corner before both Joe Shelley and Phil Johnson shots went unrewarded. Jeal negated a low drive ahead of a Bridges defensive header almost gifting an own goal to put YM ahead. Corners came at either end with defences under the cosh and both keepers earning their corn – until Hilaire ran down the

right to enable Bridges substitute Mitch Castleman to crash in the decider ten minutes from time. Although Bridges continued to create chances, YM also had opportunities –Dan Evans being unable to beat the keeper from a corner and Dave Brown seeing his run down the left blocked. YM worked hard and played well, Ryan King telling the District Post: “We did enough to get something from this game and there are good things to take from it, but in the end Bridges’ experience saw them home.” YMCA are at Gorings Mead again in the league tomorrow (Saturday) when they entertain Eastbourne Town.

Horsham mugged by Thamesmead but then beat Guernsey The Bostik League – South Division Saturday August 26 – Thamesmead Town 5 0 Horsham Monday August 28 – Horsham 2 Guernsey 1 Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham will not have happy memories of their visit to Princes Park, Dartford, where they endured a drubbing at the hands of Thamesmead Town, but, to their credit, they bounced back with a win at their temporary Lancing home against Guernsey. Against Thamesmead the Hornets created the first opportunity but Darren Boswell was unable to convert Rob O’Toole’s supply. But, within two minutes from the off, the hosts went ahead through Alex Teniola, the striker promptly doubling the pain with his second goal. Mead’s Scott Finch then headed a third with just 12 minutes on the clock. A fourth goal was added, courtesy of a crashing Bode Anidugbe volley. O’Toole and Boswell’s efforts were negated before the first half ended with the Hornets trail-

ing 4 nil. Attempts to improve matters on the resumption went begging as Teniola broke through to complete his hat trick. Although they were more positive in the second half, the Hornets were well beaten, as the scoreline suggests. Things were different back at Lancing on Bank Holiday Monday when the Hornets returned to winning ways - against Guernsey. After chances at either end O’Toole and Boswell tested the Channel Islanders’ goal before Toby House ran through to beat keeper Callum Stanton. The score remained 1 nil in Hornets’ favour at the break, both sides unable to convert chances. Guernsey challenges were averted on the resumption ahead of House being denied by Stanton, only for Guernsey to soon equalise when De La Mare slotted home. In search of the decider opportunities came and went as the Hornets matched Guernsey’s endeavours, then, just before the final whistle, O’Toole crashed home to give the Hornets three valuable points – a welcome boost ahead of their FA Cup tie against Ashford United at Lancing this Saturday.

Horsham Bowling Clubs latest news Horsham Bowling Club sent four men’s teams to Leatherhead on Tuesday. Their players struggled to read the green, and were soon behind on points. Their top winning rink comprised Robbie Calder, Dave Casagli, Dennis Tribe and skip Mick Norris, but lost elsewhere and went down fairly heavily to a strong Leatherhead side. Wednesday saw better fortunes, when four mixed triple teams took the short journey north to Newdigate, always a popular and enjoyable contest in a lovely village setting. Weather conditions were perfect and a close match saw rinks halved 2 all. However, with the top rink of Anna Bishop, Marree Stanley and skip Dave Marden scoring 27-11, Horsham came away victors overall 66-54. Horsham welcomed five mixed triple teams from Hurstpierpoint on a very breezy but bright day.

Another one of those ‘game of two halves’ ensued, as the home team was down by some 17 points at the halfway stage, underscoring on three of five rinks. But by the end, Horsham had dramatically improved to win on all but one rink, with a total 82-74 victory. Their top rink comprised Fran Baillie, John Meyer and skip Dave Marden, 22-9. The annual Town Challenge match between Horsham and Horsham Town Bowling clubs was played on both greens, each with 4 rinks. It was the closest of matches ending 147-146 in favour of Horsham Bowling Club who won back the trophy from Horsham Town. The picture shows Club captain Malcolm Ryan accept the shield from the captain of Horsham Park, David Spurr. Top rink went to Anna Bishop, Mike Pearson, John Meyer and Allan Robertson with a score of 28-14.

Roffey win the Sussex Cup!

Horsham succumb to the new league champions Saturday August 26 - Sussex Premier League East Grinstead 209 all out (47 overs) – Horsham 105 all out (35.3 overs) East Grinstead won by 104 runs – East Grinstead 28 points Horsham 10 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Monday August 28 - Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Final Preston Nomads 134-8 (20 0vers) Roffey 137-3 (18.1 overs) Roffey won by 7 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Pre season Roffey coach Simon Fearnley said: “Our aim this season is to win one of the cups we enter – we’ve got a good side, so now is the time to do it” – and Roffey duly carried off the Sussex Gray-Nicholls Final in style. Preston Nomads won the toss and were soon in trouble, Ollie Gatting departing in the second over before Matt Davies pulled off a spectacular run out to leave Nomads 19-2. Dan Phillips and Dominic Shepheard looked as if they might steady the ship but Luke Barnard (3-29) and Leigh Harrison (2-32) were taking wickets and with nearly half of their allocation gone Nomads were 51-5. Tim Moses then top-scored with an entertaining 45 off 33 balls until he was run out – one of three batsmen perishing that way in a desperate attempt to post a demanding total, sound catching also paying dividends. On a good wicket, fast outfield and shortish boundary on one side a target of 135 was at least 20 runs light and Roffey were confident at the break, but they suffered an immediate set back when Usman Khan was run out in a first ball

mix up. 11 runs, though, came off the first over and even when Davies was bowled by Moses, Roffey kept pushing on with 33 from Jibran Khan and a match winning unbeaten fourth wicket partnership of 47 from Theo Rivers (34) and Rohit Jagota (48), Jagota completing the victory with a towering six onto a roof at the sea end with 11 balls unused. Roffey skipper Matt Davies told the District Post: “It was great to come to play at Sussex’s Hove HQ in our new strip sponsored by Privilege Asset Finance and The Cellar - Jibran Khan’s off license. The players were also boosted by our excellent travelling support. We did well with both bat and ball and had plenty left in the tank at the end.” Simon Fearnley said: “This was a big occasion for the club and an opportunity for us to showcase what we can do. The players have been working very hard three evenings a week in preparation for this and I thought we looked a class act under pressure.” Beaming Roffey Chairman Mark Hamilton added: “Another great season for the club – runners up in the league and our first victory in the Sussex Cup!”

At Cricketfield Road in June Horsham inflicted East Grinstead’s only league defeat, courtesy of two outstanding performances – a century from Michael Thornely and 6-32 from Michael Munday - but Horsham, now fourth, were unable to repeat the dose last Saturday, when East Grinstead took their revenge at Saint Hill, being crowned as Sussex Premier League champions in the process. East Grinstead batted first and reached 117-1 until the introduction of Munday saw them falter to 149-5, only for a 30 run stand to bring about a partial recovery. Seven Grinstead batsmen reached double figures, their Captain former Sussex pro Will Adkin and Bradley Hatchett getting thirties, but 43 extras, including 31 wides was the major contributor - harsher 50 over regulations taking their toll. Munday finished with 5-33 – not easy to accomplish off a ten over allocation – Grinstead setting Horsham a 210 target. Replying, Horsham lost a wicket before a run was on the board,

but Tom Clark and Thornely added 31, but only Mika Ekstrom and Ross Whyte subsequently made any impact, wickets falling all too regularly as Horsham subsided to 105 all out, just half of what was needed. Michael Munday told the District Post: “Between the innings we felt that their score was slightly below par and that we could win. Naturally I was pleased because it is always great to take wickets against a top side. However, as bowling is their greatest strength we knew that we had to get off to a good start, but, unfortunately we didn’t!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham return home for their final game of the season, against already relegated Ansty, who surprisingly beat Preston Nomads last Saturday. Ansty’s win was only their second of the season – by one wicket with two balls to spare after requiring a further 46 runs when the eighth wicket fell. Bexhill also go down, whereas Ifield come up to the Premier League for the first time, with a further promotion place still to be decided. Horsham 2nd XI have been relegated from Division 4. Meanwhile, at Brighton last Saturday, there was drama when the hosts collapsed spectacularly from 61-2 to 66 all out, losing heavily to Hastings after Jed O’Brien took 5-2 in four overs.

Roffey win, finish second in the league Saturday August 26 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 241-8 (50 overs) Middleton 192 all out (45.2 overs) Roffey won by 49 runs – Roffey 30 points – Middleton 11 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey’s last home game of the season saw them complete a double against Middleton, ensuring a second place finish after winning the league for the last three years. East Grinstead were crowned champions with a comprehensive win against Horsham at Saint Hill. At the Innes Memorial Ground Roffey elected to bat and got off to a good start, the openers posting 62, but then slumped to 107-5 after wickets had been gifted away. However, Rohit Jagota was batting serenely on his way to an excellent 104, finding good allies

in the Fleming brothers – Josh making 23 and George 44 – a rapid 51 run eighth wicket partnership, including an unbeaten 18 from Leigh Harrison setting a testing 242 run target. Roffey were the happier of the two teams as they demolished the final one of Suzanne and Anne’s legendary teas in this year’s campaign. Jagota’s hundred arrived at just over a run a ball with 12 fours and two sixes, Roffey coach Simon Fearnley saying: “Another superb Rohit innings – anything over 225 will be difficult on that wicket, it’s a little slow for too much shot making.” Middleton were without Sussex’s Angus Robson, so, much rested on the batting of their Captain, Sean Heather. Both openers reached the twenties but then departed and when the visitors wobbled to 119-6, the game appeared to be Roffey’s for the taking. Yet, as Middleton rebuilt they kept the asking rate at around eight until

Roffey reined them in, boosting the visitors’ requirement to ten an over. Then wickets suddenly fell in the quest for quick runs – two Matt Davies stumpings in a Luke Barnard over followed by a suicidal run out before Heather’s departure for 59 sealed Middleton’s fate – caught in the deep by Theo Rivers. Roffey skipper Davies told the District Post: “We didn’t bowl too well at first but then we bottled them up, polishing them off quickly in the end. Congratulations to East Grinstead winning the league, they’ve played good cricket. The weather went for them but, like us, they’re very consistent and we’re the top two teams – we’ve only lost two games (last week’s by two runs) and we’ll be back”. In their last game of the season (tomorrow, Saturday) Roffey go to Fulking to play Preston Nomads, whom they beat in the Sussex Cup final last Monday.
